Perfect Panda Photos
Posted at 12:34 pm March 12, 2010 by Anastasia HorningBai Yun and Yun Zi are in the next exhibit and are both doing very well. Yun Zi is really exploring his trees in the exhibit, and often you can’t really see him clearly in the trees while he’s sleeping. Bai Yun has been pretty good about eating where our guests can see her; she even gives guests a view of her nursing the cub. We can never tell when the little guy will wake up, or what he’ll do when awake, so having a rare peek at panda motherhood is always a real treat.
Gao Gao is still off exhibit and has been doing very well. Right now he will remain there so Su Lin can stay in the front, close to our soundproof area for the hearing study (see post Panda Care).
Zhen Zhen is in the off-exhibit classroom area and has really adjusted well. She and Gao Gao sometimes communicate with each other, and Zhen Zhen is constantly in the trees trying to see the bear she’s “talking” to. Remember: the two will never have direct access to each other, as they are father and daughter. Even though Zhen Zhen isn’t reproductively mature, we wouldn’t want to breed Gao with his daughter, and we don’t know if there would be any unfriendly behavior on his part.
If you cant visit the San Diego Zoo for your perfect photo opp, do keep an eye on the Panda Cam, as we focus on Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao from time to time!

That picture of Yun Zi was just too adorable. I was wondering, why can’t you breed Gao Gao with Zhen Zhen? Is it because the cub will have genetic defects like human babies or because of another reason?
Thanks
Moderator’s note: We’d much rather have her breed with a suitable male that is not related to her. Fortunately, these days there are lots of “qualified” males to choose from

Oh I love Yun Zi, Zhen Zhen, Su Lin, Bai Yun, and Gao Gao So much!!! ( I also love Mei Sheng and Hua Mei!!) <3 I am just the biggest panda fan there is! If you ask me anything about pandas, I could answer you correctly. I just love pandas so much!!! <3
P. S.
I also think that it is so cute and cool for Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao to talk to each other and that Zhen Zhen climbs her tree to try and see her dad!
I LOVE PANDAS!!
March 12th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
Thanks like always for the info. Is there a howdy gate that Zhennie and dad would be able to see each other through?
My only complaint is that there are no close up camera shots of Mr. Man (Gao), at least I’ve never seen any.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Our perfect photo op is coming up next weekend, as 50 of us with the Panda Convention –50!!!- will descend on the Panda Research station for our fix of our beloved pandas…. we can’t wait. Need I say the excitement is so thick you could cut it? I know we will have plenty of photo ops…. heck, I’ll even take a black and white eye or a black ear, or a little rump…. I’m THAT addicted to these guys!
Anastasia, if Su Lin is in estrus, does that mean that the zoo will attempt to inseminate her or is it too soon in her life for that to happen? Would it be too soon to prepare for something like that right on the heels of Bai Yun giving birth, as it were?
Moderator’s note: We do not have permission from China to artifically inseminate Su Lin this year.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Awww…. I predict Yun Zi is going to be President (of something) some day………he’s always got that “Presidential wave” going in photographs. What a ham!
Thanks for the great update on our favorite bears!
March 12th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
I LOVE PANDAS!!!! xoxoxo <3
March 12th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Now, I’m even more excited for the 20th!!! Thank you!
Bobbie, from the previous post, THEE best in person video I’ve seen of pandas. How did you stand all that cuteness? Your video made me even more excited that the update for the 20th. Thank you, too.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Bobby Wood #53 previous blog – great video of Yun Zi and Momma…wonderful close-ups! Wednesday would have been a perfect day to be at the zoo. the cooler weather makes for active Panda’s!
March 12th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
what kind of communication takes place between ZZ and GG? Is it reproductively oriented, territorial, just saying hello, or something else?
March 12th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
Thanks to Laura #29 in the last blog for the info about the Bai/Hua Mei video.
I’m already jealous of all of you who will be attending the panda convention next week. I’m counting on you for loads of up close and personal pictures and videos. I will be sending virtual hugs and kisses to all the pandas and dreaming of being there too.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:16 pm
I love pandas lol we all love u yun Zi
March 12th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
Awwww! Well, Hello to you, Yun Zi!!!! What a handsome fella!
March 12th, 2010 at 3:41 pm
Its very interesting that Dad and Daughter talk to each other. Like the rest of the lovers of pandas
I love all the pictures taken. Are they made in to post cards? I will be there in later part of June and

That little guy has stolen my heard.

March 12th, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Ohhhh!!! I absoloutely LOVE pandas!!!
What a great post, and the picture is PRECIOUS!!! Its cool how Gao and Su Lin “communicate”!
March 12th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Would it be likely that Gao Gao would become aggressive with ZZ? I mean what happens in the wild when a male panda comes up on a young female like ZZ. I assume that a cub might not be far from mom but ZZ is in that territory where she is still juvenile and hasn’t matured sexually yet so she wouldn’t appeal to a male bear right in that way but would Gao Gao see her as a threat?
You say they are talking and don’t you wonder what they’re saying? I’m sure we could all imagine a conversation between daughter and father but he wouldn’t recognize her as his would he? To him she would be just another panda and female at that.
March 12th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
I love all of the panda photos–especially those of Yun Zi (what a cutie!!!)!! Please keep the photos coming!!
March 12th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
It is nice to hear that ZZ and GaoGao communicate, and I bet it’s awful cute to watch ZZ climb high to try and get a peek at her Daddy.
We are looking soooo forward to our trip in a few months to see the pandas and all the animals at the SDZ and WAP.
This pic of YunZi is precious…then yet again, what pics of him are not!
March 12th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
I will be visiting the zoo and meeting yunior “in person” for the first time in April and am so excited! Very disappointed about Gao Gao though, I have yet to see him in person and he is a favorite in our house, maybe later in the year?
March 12th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
#53 Bobbie Wood from previous blog – Thank you for a wonderful close up of prince fluffy butt! He is the most adorable little guy (although I love all of our pandas). All Yun Zi lovers MUST see this video. It’s a real treat to see him so close to the camera- it feels like I’m there watching myself . And those back paws seem to have minds of their own. I love how they kind of creep up to his mouth all by themselves when he’s eating/playing with food!
I do wonder how Kathy and the rest of the keepers get anything done. I’d be patting him and oohing and aahing for the whole day!
March 12th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
Maybe ZZ is a daddy’s girl!
March 12th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
There was an adorable close-up (panda cam) of Yun Zi in his hammock this afternoon. Guess I should have sent myself that picture. Now I think of it! LOL
March 12th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Not to take away from Yun Zi but while he naps, go check out the polar bears.
They must be getting near breeding because they are now always together.
The new plunge area will be hope at the end of the month. I’ll make another trip to see it all finished.
Good camera work on the bears lately.
Moderator’s note: Read our newest post about our polar bear trio: Polar Bears: Crash, Slurp, and Shadow.

I am so happy that Zhen and Gao are vocalizing with each other. Knowing Zhen, I am certain she peeks at Gao under the crack in the bottom of the wall that separates them as well as from the trees. That is what I observed her doing when her sister, Su Lin, occupied that enclosure during the Gao/Bai breeding season last spring.
March 12th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Hi Anastasia
Thank you so much for yet another wonderful update. I feel like I know personally all of your wonderful pandas and of course I can get up close with our Wang Wang and Funi (who by the way have settled in very well in Adelaide)
Liana #4 – unfortunately I didn’t win the lottery so can’t attend the Panda Convention next weekend – but I wish you all well – have the most marvellous time and of course save me a virtual seat – I will be there in spirit with all 50 of you!
Thank you Doxie and Grammie – you also keep me up to date and entralled – it is so nice to know that we are all Global Pandaholics and Neotenists
Dennis and Lynne – how is everything going – I seem to have lost touch with where things are up to for Lynne – Remember there are lots of thoughts, prayers and hugs coming to you from Australia
Cheers to you all
March 12th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
Fascinating to read that Su Lin & Pappa Gao talk to each other – don’t we wish we could speak pandanese
I’m sure she doesn’t know he’s her daddy – but just another panda to say “hi” to. Wish we had more info about wild pandas & if they “talk” to other adult pandas – so much to learn – which gives us hope that China will extend the loan of all their pandas – every time a panda does something new means another study of their behavior ( I hope)
March 12th, 2010 at 7:00 pm
what a cute picture of Yunior. I’m envious of all you in the “Panda Convention”. Great info on our bears.
March 12th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
#3 MARIE Here are 4 photos somebody shared on this blog or facebook of Gao Gao. There are crisp enough that you can blow them up as wallpaper without loss of focus. They are not extreme closeups, but might help a bit. Also go to Flikr and see photos by Rita Petita for some of the best Panda Photos you might ever see of our group at the zoo. She visits every weekend if she can and her photos go back years and when different Pandas are on close exhibit, so you get the best of all of the family. Be sure to give yourself lots of time to cruise through her area since you could spend a day and not see them all…..Love Grammmie

#4 LIANA With so many people with cameras perhaps you guys can agree to get 6 to 10 of the best photographers, with the best equipment, to take photos and pool them for everybody to choose from what they want. Less noise for the Pandas and maximum photos with the best equipment. Just a thought so you can enjoy seeing them without the distraction of only looking through a lens for a great photo op.
#5 DEE Prince Fluffy-Butt is going to be King…Queen Bai only allowed Gao Gao to be her prince consort, the throne goes to Yunior……..Love Grammmie
March 12th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
That is wild that Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao talk to eachother. I wonder if pandas are more social than it would seem. I wonder if there is any way for them to recognize they are related, by scent. Do people research and try to see if the communication is friendly or territorial? I am so curious to see how pandas would relate to eachother. Since Zhen Zhen is still a cub, would they play, would they fight. I am so curious. I would love to study their communication.
March 12th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
I wonder if pandas are like humans, in the way that we have our own homes and areas of our own. Yet, we get together to socialize on the phone or in person. It is like Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao are talking on the phone. I figure they are saying, “Hey neighbor! How is it going?” Since Zhen Zhen is a cub, I speculate that the communication is friendly like, “You are a panda, I am a panda, it is nice to be around someone of my species.”
March 12th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Oopps – meant to say do family members talk to each other in pandanese ??? if SuLin & Gao are talking, is it possible that that SuLin & ZZ also communicate ( – have read about the studies about how females in estrus communicate when they ready to mate
March 12th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
What a nice blog. The SDZ does a lot of nice blogs. I enjoy reading them a lot. Have a good day with the animal that we all love.
March 12th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Bobbie #53 – previous blog – What a delightful video. I especially enjoyed watching Yun Zi nibbling on the apple slice – he looks so cute. It seems that Bai Yun was trying to get the keeper’s attention and maybe get more treats.
Bai was constantly looking toward the back fence where the keepers were working. I loved your close-ups, especially the one of Yun Zi with a big yawn. – Very sweet.
March 12th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
Anastasia…I guess perfect Pandas make perfect pictures as I always manage to take quite a few when we visit the SDZ…I see a perfect little ham in Yunior that evokes memories of his older brother and father both in CUTENESS factors…..As I said before he went on exhibit he has the Pandarazzi in awe of his OK I’ll strike a pose when I feel like it attitude …..LOL….I see by the videos that he has captivated Kathy and the other keepers with his nonchalant laid back attitude but unlike Lin Lin and ZZ he has learned early to come down for his snacks before mom “Bulldozer” Bai Yun comes in and takes them all…LOL….I only wish that Lynn was out of the Hospital as we would love to be at the SDZ for the Black and White Panda Convention but will attend via the videos and pictures our GPF Family and Friends will post that attend in person and will be Virtual guests at the Convention…..OH well there is always the hope for next year as this seems like it will become a yearly event or perhaps we will be fortunate enough to attend his 1 year Bearthday Celebration……..
Gao Gao and ZZ almost remind me of how Mei Sheng and Su Lin communicated via the tree tops and talked to each other when ZZ was a cub first out on display…… I guess this is a Panda deja vu with different circumstances as father and daughter discover each other…. Now if we only spoke and understood Panda language I wonder what they are talking about ?….LOL……

All is quiet in the Panda Pen at this time. While looking through my “favorites list” I found this link for “Pandas, Pandas, Pandas”, but have no idea how to get it converted to English on my Windows 7. Can any of my Panda Friends help me??? The photos look glorious, but I would sure like to know who is who, where and why. Thank you ….Love Grammmie

When I was at the Zoo Monday I bought so many things of Yun Si and Bai Yun. I’m having fun showing all
my friend how darling he is. I LOVE HIM!!
March 13th, 2010 at 1:00 am
I think it’s lovely that ZZ and her dad have little ‘father and daughter’ chats.
Lu Latimer #13, there are lots of gorgeous postcards and prints in the gift shop. The problem I had was trying to fit everything else I bought in the store in my suitcase without getting arrested at customs for bringing an entire gift shop home with me! And then there was the huge bag I hauled on the plane. I’m surprised we managed to take off.
Bobbie, a lovely video of his cuteness being, well, cute. And DoxieMom, I spent Friday evening catching up on your last 5 videos. Even my one-eyed cat was watching little Yun Zi.
March 13th, 2010 at 1:29 am
So great to hear Bai Yun lets the humans watch her eat and nurse..she is such a lovely bear.
I just want to know if you ever hug and cuddle her like you do with the babies, or is this off limits with an adult bear? I have a picture of her on my wall above my computer, and I just get that uncontrolable feeling of wanting to just pet her head or sqeeze her ears or just stroke her…do the keepers ever show Bai Yun any affection?
Thanks for the blogs I love them
Moderator’s note: Our keepers never go in with adult pandas, but keepers do offer back scratches if a panda presses up against the bars.

OB: Goood Morning, Panda Fans and Friends! Welcome to another episode of the Opera BearFree Show! This morning I have such a special guest. A lady if ever there is one. A candidate for Mommy of the Year, here’s Bai Yun.
(Bai Yun sashays in, waving her paw. She sits down on the bamboo couch next to Opera.)
BY: Thanks for inviting me on your show. I love your couch. I think it would be a great addition to the exhibition area at SDZ.
OB: Congrats on your fifth cubby. He’s..
BY: Yun Zhi is 7 months old.
OB: Tell me, how do you do it? How do you raise 5 cubs and retain that Miss Panda Universe glow? Spill.
BY: *GIGGLES**BLUSH* You are too kind. Well, you have seen photos of me hanging over the edge of my rock structure or platform, right? Or sometimes I drap myself onto a rock. Why? COS it brings a rush of blood to the head and plumps up the cheeks….hee hee, the lines also disappear.
OB: What about those perfect ears?
BY: That is good genes, Papa Pan Pan is the one responsible.
OB: With 2 kids back in China, three growing up beautifully, what else is on the cards for you and Gao Gao.
BY: *BLUSH* I dont know, maybe, maybe, we’ll try for one more. After all we are grandparents already. But I do love my cubbies.
OB: How is Gao Gao?
BY: He is one happy Boo munching machine.
OB: So you think he is OK to have another baby?
BY: *GIGGLE* Oh he is looking forward to Spring 2011, he told me…you know what he means…
OB: Many Panda fans have their favourites, Fu Long, Tai Shan, Mei Sheng, Xi Lan, looks like Yun Zhi is going to mount quite a challenge to win the hearts of Panda fans.
BY: Well, we are blessed that about 50 of them are coming to see us soon. A Panda Convention imagine that. All I hope for Yun Zhi is that he will be respectful and love all the hoomans who have been good to us.
I think he has the ability to be a Panda Ambassador; to bring about peace between Pandas and Hoomans.
Well, that’s is what is in this Mama’s heart.
OB: And what advice do you have for a would be Mama like Mei Lan?
BY: Lun Lun is a great Mommy and has given that dear girl lots of Panda wisdom. My only wish and advice for her is to choose wisely among her suitors. Looks aren’t everything. A sincere gentleman is the best. That would be my advice to Su Lin and Zhennie when their turn comes too.
OB: Is there anything you would love to do?
BY: I would love a holiday with Gao and go visit all the Pandas in USA. I would love to expereince the snow that Tian and Mei Xiang enjoy. Although we are also planning a Pandalympics, but all of us on one place would be pandemonium, hee hee, pun intended.
OB: OK, folks, that’s all we have time for today on our show. Next week, we hope to interview Tai Shan and discover the secret of how to bake Panda Cake. And we will also feature a video update on Princess Lin Ping in Thailand. See you next week.
BY: Have a lovely weekend, Panda Fans and Friends! Bye Bye!
March 13th, 2010 at 5:15 am
Thanks for the update on the Gao family. I am tuned in to Today Weekend where they said they will show Yun Zi in a few minutes. I just saw a special on bears that looked like the bear exhibits at SDZ. It was very interesting and highlighted the physical differences between different bears species.
Glad the crane adventire with Polar Bear Plunge is over so that the camera crews could get in to broadcast the close-ups of Yun Zi’s new home. SDZ has been really busy in the media circuit lately getting the word out about the fabulous animals in their care, and inviting people to Elephant Odyssey and the new Polar Bear Plunge.
March 13th, 2010 at 5:24 am
Great interview with Keeper Kathy Hawk this morning with Bai Yun munching away in the background with Yun Zi asleep above her in his green hammock. Loved the shots of Yun Zi and Bai Yun wrestling, which hopefully they will be doing again in about 3 hours when the zoo opens to their many admirers.
Although still dark at SDZ, the interview did get a great camera angle at the lushness of the exhibit and how beautiful a home mother and son have.
March 13th, 2010 at 5:37 am
Kathy did a great job on the Today show this morning. It’s a good thing they had some video to show of Yun Zi and Bai Yun because Yunnie was having an extra nap this morning. I am sure everyone who saw them was very impressed with the care our wonderful SDZ staff have taken to make sure that all the pandas are happy and comfortable.
I have a wonderful photo of Gao Gao eating (what else would he be doing) I took when we visited SDZ last March. I have it hung up in my office and everyone thinks it is a picture I bought when I was out there. I didn’t know my photo skills were so good. It is a nice reminder of my wonderful trip to CA.
I wish so much that we could come out every year (especially this one to see Yunnie) but that is just not in the budget.
Give all the pandas an extra helping of leaf eater biscuits for me please.
Don’t forget to “spring ahead” tonight!!!

“Hi, my name is Tai shan, nice to meet you”

I just want to tell you, I got up early and watched the Weekend Today Show, of course they kept talking about our precious little bear, but, made us wait. To cut a long story short, at 8am the local station took it off and put their own Good Morning Show on. I was so disappointed needless to say. Did anyone else get to see it?
March 13th, 2010 at 7:21 am
i was actually awake this am to watch the tv show. great job Kathy ! little yunnie was sleeping but i guess it was really early for him. there is some good video of he and his mom bai yun playing. saw zhennie on the cam yesterday, she is my3yr old granddaughter’s favorite., so she was excited to see her, when she was at my house. her mom plans on a trip back to china with her, when she is older, so hopefully they will get to see some pandas. thanks for all the videos and updates. i really liked the video from bobbie on the previous blog
March 13th, 2010 at 8:01 am
I understand why you can’t mate them. But why can’t they be allowed to see one another…through a fence or something? Kind of sad thinking of her straining to see her “friend”.
Moderator’s note: They can climb the trees if they are that interested.
March 13th, 2010 at 8:27 am
I love Yun zi!
There is a good news for wild living pandas:All protection zone in China will be linked by green channels. So they can move from area to area.spread gene to another ethnic group, and also means more flesh boo to find.
cute videos here:

March 13th, 2010 at 9:22 am
I am looking at “My Yuni” sleeping on a Saturday morning. A day to sleep in after a long hard week of working to make people happy. I notice a pretty Cape Honeysuckle, (red orange flowers) there beside the cave shelter. Something familiar that he used to play with when he was little. He is a big boy now of course, but something to make him feel at home from his first yard, to his second yard. You know I cant remember if it was there when Z was rooming there and I have been watching for a long while. Any way back to my boy…………
March 13th, 2010 at 9:24 am
Oh and I feel like it is time to buy him a pair of blue Levi suspender overalls and some tan Doc Martins, to trape around like a “big boy” now.
March 13th, 2010 at 9:57 am
Thank you, Anastasia, this photo is unique. Yun Zi is already showing “royal” qualities. Su Lin, my first ever watched panda has definitely grown up. I am glad to know that there are quite a few suitable males are waiting for her. I bet her cubs will be as lovely as the whole San Diego Zoo panda family, no wonder with such good genes. I have only now time to comment on the previous blogs, sorry. I hope you don’t mind! I was also not familiar with the term “Neoteny” but knew about the fact why pandas appeal to almost everybody. As you explained they never seem to “grow up” but remain as cute as they were as a cub, just “a little” larger. Therefore, it is now surprise that the WWF chose the panda as their logo.
Having always been a real cat lover I find that cats only portray the real baby looks when they are very small kittens. At about six weeks they start to resemble adult cats in a miniature version whereas puppies remain “babies” much longer.
Previous blog, #43 Inge/Vienna isn’t is beautiful that our Fu Long is busy adjusting so well into the new panda group? Tai Shan is his neighbour. So Fu Long is truly a “lucky dragon”!
#58 Marcia in PA, I am sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty but very happy for you that you will “adopt” another kitten. The name panda is more than suitable for a black/white cat. Enjoy your kitty, it will help you to get over the loss faster. Unfortunately I know what I am talking about.
#70 Panda Annie, I am also sorry about the loss of your hamster Chatty. I am afraid hamsters don’t have a very long life span, but nevertheless the loss is the same. At one stage my husband suggested to me to keep large tortoises instead of cats and dogs since they would outlive us by far. Only a joke, but losing a beloved pet is always so heartbreaking. So I am making an effort to enjoy every day with our pets. One never knows for how long this is possible.
Yun Zi is getting cuter by the day. Refering to the growth chart I was surprised that he is not the largest compared with his brothers and sisters.
March 13th, 2010 at 10:04 am
I missed seeing the Weekend Today show… we DVR’ed the wrong time slot… but I found it when I googled Weekend Today Yun Zi…. Kathy did a great job, Bai was munching boo, and Yun Zi was sleeping.. .but they had really cute video clips from previous videos as well…. SDZ have alot to be proud of… 5 cubs, Bai, Gao and a working breeding program… Good job SDZ…

I see that Meerkat Moderator has answered my question about Clyde a few blogs ago (you know who you are) THANKS AND today I actually see him sitting as big as he is. I thought maybe he was to big he had trouble getting around. This wonderful web sight, our San Diego Zoo is like a window of information into everything animal, thanks.

Kathy Hawk – Beautiful job on national TV this morning. You were a really good sport to get up so early to do the show! Yun Zi was also featured on Animal Exploration this morning which also featured other animals at the Wild Animal Park. Great job to everyone.

Conversation with Gao Gao #76
Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
Gao Gao: Oh, hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: Hey, looks like an absorbing letter.
G: Oh, it’s from Tai Shan.
T: So what did he say?
G: He likes his Villa #5.
T: Oh, and I heard he has neighbors.
G: Yeah, Wu Jun and Fu Long are in the adjacent enclosure.
T: Wow! That must be exciting.
G: Yeah, since the press offers them tips on human dating and mating…
T: Huh?
G: He and the 2 consult on procreation matters.
T: Oh, really…
G: And he thought the 2 were naive.
T: Well, they are younger, aren’t they?
G: So he writes with questions.
T: What are some questions?
G: Here’s one: How does one meet a lady?
T: Your answer?
G: Do nothing. The reserve will introduce a lady.
T: And what were their answers?
G: Wu Jun said to raid the panda kindergarten.
T: Huh?
G: And Fu Long offered a plane ticket to Vienna.
T: Okay…
G: Here’s another: How often to lick nipples before feeding baby?
T: And your answer?
G: Do nothing. I never licked my nipples.
T: You mean they thought they fed their own babies?
G: They thought they birthed their own cubs, too.
T: How did they come to think that?
G: They connected the dots somehow.
T: Oh?
G: The press said Tai came home to wed and have cubs, didn’t they?
T: So what’s your general advice for Tai?
G: I just told him to do what he does best.
T: Makes sense.
G: Eat a lot, sleep a lot, roam a lot…
T: Good advice.
G: Visit all the panda reserves, mark every object in sight.
T: Of course.
G: And send all the extra ladies my way.

To see the Video of this mornings TV STAR YUN ZI goi to Pandas Live On March 13, 2010. I was just checking to see if there was anything new and found that….so we can enjoy it in another place. The video is darker than the one I saw, but that may be because the “box” is smaller….Love Grammmie
March 13th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
2015 EST bring back the cameras, chubby cubby(aka Yun Zi) he is awake. To bad he slept through the morning on TV with his back to the camera no less ! Bai Yun new what to do, she looked beautiful on the T.V.
March 13th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
I just noticed some flowers on the left side of the “rock cave”, are they new or did I just see them before now???Love Grammmie
March 13th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
I also saw the today show video. Great job Cathy. Too bad Yunnie was asleep but we did get to see the beautiful Bai Yun awake. I understand why the keepers would not go in with an adult bear but Bai Yun does appear so huggable. I want her to be my mom! Yun Zi is one lucky cubbie. Any word on what his current weight is? Sometimes he looks so big and other times he still looks tiny. I guess it is the camera angles. I love how he can just sit and play with his feet. I have to say that lately Zhen Zhen has been my favorite to watch. She is one active girl. I laugh watching her play with her sack and jumping in the trees. She is wild. It is cute to imagine her and daddy Gao talking to each other.
Thanks SDZ and moderator for the great blogs and camera work.
March 13th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
It seems most nights now when I check in on YunZi and BaiYun, YunZi is sleeping in the hammock (as he is doing now). Does he eventually go inside on his own power to sleep, or does a keeper need to nudge him to go in at night? Perhaps, he is sleeping outside all night now? Just curious………….TYSVM
Moderator’s note: He can stay outside at night if he wants to (and his mother lets him!).
March 13th, 2010 at 6:36 pm
Hi Doxiemom

I was able to comment on your videos, except for ZZ and Su Lin.
TYSVM for that one….. I don’t get to see much of ZZ and SuLin these days and that video made my week.
Our little weeble fluffy butt just get cuter with each passing day…………….it’s called “cuteness overload”…… LOL

How do you pronounce each pandas name? Please answer!

March 13th, 2010 at 10:12 pm
10 p. m. report—I spy a rectangular “doorway” filled with light at the rear of the yard—and I see Bai Yun looking through the fence to the light. I think this is one of the nights that Yunior and Bai have gotten in to the restricted area to use the computers and phones to contact relatives….watch out for those big phone bills to China. It would be Yunior making most of the phone calls because he cannot read and write very much yet. I guess Bai is the look-out in case a stray keeper shows up. If they say they were in there to change the clocks do not believe them, changing the clocks does not take this much time…..besides they are on Bamboo and Milk time, they do not need clocks. I just wanted you guys to know what goes on when you are not watching…Love Grammmie

What a nice article Anastasia, thank you. My friend Lynn recorded the Today Weekend show for me so I could watch the segment on Yun Zi. We were having a gathering at her house when we turned it on to watch it, and all of us ooohed & aaahhd over Yun Zi & Bai wrestling around. It was great!!! Kathy you did a wonderful job. Thank you SDZ for making it possible for all of us to be able to watch such a heartwarming segment.

While searching online I came across Hua Mei’s pictures showing now Grandma Bai Yun and Shi Shi’s perfect little girl at http://www(DOT)liu(DOT)edu/cwis/cwp/library/exhibits/panda/panda(DOT)htm
Simply remove the (DOT) and subsitute a . or a dot / period and you will see mom of the century Bai Yun with Hua Mei……
I am happy to deal with some minor flooding this weekend as rain beats the seven foot plus of snow we would have had if the weather was colder…..Thunder and Lightning in NJ in March wow, what next? LOL…. Did anybody get a link or a chance to post the video to yesterdays Today Show of Yunior as I had to work and forgot to set my DVR ?

Again simply substitue a . for the (DOT)’s in the above link and enjoy…… Yunior , Kathy and Bai Yun are worth repeat viewings……;-)
To my GPF Family and Friends and SDZ Friends, Lynn is still making slow progress in her recovery and I hope to have some time off to either visit her or hopefully pick her up from 15 months in the out of state Hospital soon…Will keep all of you that have been kind with your get well wishes and prayers for her recovery posted as you all have helped us thru a very difficult time and I can’t express my Thanks to You all for simply being there and caring…..Giant Panda Hugs to You All : Dennis

If you log on to Pandas Live On, you can watch the video of the Weekend Today Show. Yun Zhi displayed his fluffy butt. But the video of Yunnie and Mommy is precious.
Keeper Kathy – You are blessed and a blessing to us and the pandas.

Lucy (no 45) – That cute panda cub is Wen Li and if you google ‘Wen Li’s near escape’ there is a simple write up on this feisty girl.

Here is a story.
After the pool party, Mr Gao is quietly eating his bamboo. Mr Gao hears his love Bai Yun yelling “Ahhhh Yun Zi stop scent marking me!!” Mr Gao busts out of his room, climbs the fence. Mr Gao becomes like a hulk. Mr Gao yells “I’ll save you Bai Yun from our little stinker”. Yun Zi hears his dad approaching, BOOM BOOM BOOM Yun Zi quickly scurries up the tree. From the top of the trees Yun Zi says “You can’t get me!!
”
Yun Zi
Bai Yun
Mr. Gao
Bai Yun: (eat eating eating her bamboo) Ahh it is a nice sunny day.

Yun Zi: oh yeah got to do my daily scent marking.
Bai Yun: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Yun Zi stop it now!!!! aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh! Ah Ah
Mr. Gao: Oh Bai i will save you (in his loudest and boldest voice)
Yun Zi: Oh no the hulk is here (runs up the tree)
Mr Gao: don’t you mess with my beautiful Bai Yun
Yun Zi: You can’t get me you can’t get me! hee hee hee
Mr Gao: well back to my bamboo.

It’s Mothers Day today (Sunday) in the UK. My lovely daughter, apart from some lovely goodies, has given me a gorgeous Panda card. It’s a mum and baby panda, about the same age as Yun Zi and he/she is so squishy. It made my day.
Just been watching Hope on the Black Bear cam – she has been on her own in the den exploring while mum had a well deserved break. What a little cutie, but wow, can she yell!
March 14th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
I was watching one of the overseas videos of the Baby Pandas.
The Panda area was a disaster …filled with all sorts of toys and miscellaneous junk.
No space to walk or grow naturally.
It was Bedlam! Very noisy…..
It shows me that the way “Our” Pandas are being nurtured seems the best method by far.
The surroundings at SDZ are more true to nature, ( as well as can be done in captivity) .
You have said that the Pandas are loners…and seemingly quite happy as long as bamboo and water
are provided, for their nutrition and well-being.
Thank you for all of your research et al….
You are certainly doing something that’s most commendable and doing it perfectly.
Right on San Diego Panda Team !

Hi, pandafans! Hope everybody remembered to set your clocks up an hour for daylight savings time today! Was just watching pandacam, and Yuni was just enjoying himself sitting on the rock stump nibbling on the food snackies that he got today. He was sitting up–very good, Yuni! He was also rolling around, laying on his back, just doing all of those normal things that a baby will do. Momma Bai was eating her boo nearby. Yuni’s adorable cuteness factor has gone up to 15 on a scale of 1-10!! Looks like you all have a very nice day today. So did we here in my part of Florida! Kind of cool but the best weather we’ve had in about 2 months! To all of the San Diego pandafans that love to watch basketball, the brackets are set! Both San Diego State men and women basketball teams have made it to their NCAA tourneys! GO AZTECS!!!! Well, back to the pandacam to watch some more of Yuni! FUN!!! Will check back in later on!

Back on pandacam! Yuni has now climbed back up in the tree and in his hammock! Momma Bai is still eating her dinner. I guess Yuni had enough of his snackies for now.

Thanks for the info on where to see the Today show on Yun Zi. I calculated that if the Today Show was at 7:00 am in New York, that would be 4:00 am in California. Wow! Keeper Kathy Hawk would have been there at 4:00 am. That is dedication! No wonder it was dark there, and Yun Zi was sleeping. I am not surprised that Bai Yun was eating. Everybody looked so good on the show.
March 14th, 2010 at 6:40 pm
#75 BRITNEY Well done—I have suspected I was seeing Prince Fluffy-Butt scent marking wherever he darn well pleased, but hoped he spared poor Bai. Those Boys!!!!!!!!!! Love Grammmie
p. s. Thank you to everyone contributing to the blog comments. You give us fun, information, photos, lots of stuff we would see no other way.
March 14th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
#45 Lucy – thank you so much for the link to those wonderful photos – such great close-ups, that little guy fills up the entire picture – I also love the one where he’s got half his body inside the plastic tub! too funny!!
March 14th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
And for your Sunday Night Bear report……Somebody left the light on again tonight. I cannot see either mother or son Panda so perhaps it is them inside catching up with their e-mails and phone calls. Last night one of them was outside watching all of the time, in case stray keepers showed up…but tonight they seem to think they have it made. Let them get away with a Saturday night, can Sunday night be far behind???? Love Grammmie
March 14th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
I cannot remember where I recently read it (in the last few days), I only remember a blog said that the divided areas of China of Panda distribution will be linked by “green corridors” to help the wild Pandas to have a better chance at better breeding. It made me fel good. Early in my Pandaholism this last August I saw a map showing the Prehistoric range, Historic range and current Panda range for Pandas. I just now found the map again. I do not know if it is the same blog, but it is the same map. It is at
http://nationalzoo (dot) si (dot) edu/Animals/GiantPandas/PandaHabitat/default (dot) cfm To use this link remove all spaces and “(dot)” gets a period instead. The map is the lower one on the page, and will change automatically showing Prehistoric first, shrinking as it goes…..Love Grammmie

#53 Bobbie, previous blog, I only got around now watch your video. It is so gorgeous, thank you for sharing it with all of us. And the music was sooo fitting! Since Mozart is my favourite composer the symphony was the cherry on the top. Yun Zi looked adorable and rather tiny from that angle. I had a good giggle when mommie Bai was sitting in the tree exposing her, sorry, big bum. She is such a sweet bear and seems to know by now that even Yuni is not able to outdo her even with his charming attitude.
To everyone else who supplied videos or links or poetry, thank you so much. All your efforts are highly appreciated.
Dennis, I was sorry to hear that it is still not quite clear when Lynn will be discharged from hospital. But I keep thinking of the two of you and wish you both all the best. Panda greetings from Austria

#70 DENNIS Thank you for that short clip. It may be in another language I do not speak, but laughter is the same in any language….and the clip will have you howling. I only saw one escapee until I rewatched it, then I watched it some more just for fun. I even e-mailed the link to a few friends who love hearing about the pandas and have me to read the blogs and tell them the best of the best…..Love Grammmie

I love watching Yun Zi every day he does some funny I am trying to get my husband to come to the zoo again this year in late Spet. or Oct. to see my little boy I was wondering how long he might you might keep her out to see? I understand this is a guess but if I get there and can’t see him it might mean divorce for me. We where there last year and saw Sun Lin and Zhen Zhen but there a sleep. That little boy has kept a bright spot in my day my mother has bin in out of the hospital and nusring home all winter. Thank you for all you do for all the anamails at the zoo.
Moderator’s note: We usually have our young pandas on exhibit through their weaning at 17to 18 months of age, so Yun Zi should be “viewable” through January or February 2011.

#68 MC in Shanghai – thanks so much for the escape panda video. You really have to keep an eye on these guys! Spent 2 weeks in Shanghai last year and if I’d known there were pandas to see, I would have found them.

No howdy gate for Zhen and Gao. There is a door between them, but to open it would mean that Gao Gao would have full access to Zhen Zhen. A lot of people are curious about what Gao Gao would do, but for any bears that first meet we prefer a more controlled environment.
#9 Linda
Some of the communication between the two is saying hello. We did hear some vocalizing one morning from Zhen Zhen, which is something we hear from Bai Yun when she flirts with Gao Gao, but again we don’t want to introduce them. Our observers are watching Zhen Zhen a little more closely to see what vocalizations are taking place, for how long, and the context.
March 15th, 2010 at 11:35 am
I did get to see Yun ZI awake for a brief period while I visited SDV last week. He was climbing all over Bai Yun while she was trying to sleep. He jsut melts your heart when he is sleeping in his hammock with head and a paw hanging over the edge.
Su Lin put on quite a show. After her enclosure was cleaned and fresh bambo layed out, she went bonkers climbing the trees. First it was up to get all the fresh treat put out for her, then she like a child on a “jungle gym” or “monkey bars.” At one point she even fell out of the tree only to climb back up.
I had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go back and visit them again.
March 15th, 2010 at 11:41 am
Hearing the pandas communicate with one another will be a whole new experience when we attend the Panda Convention. We’ve seen so much of the our beloved bears via the panda cam without audio, and just bits and pieces on video. I am so looking forward to the weekend. 4 more days and we’ll be at the SDZ!!!!
Thank you Anastasia! Can’t wait to see “my” bears!!
And thank you Lucilla for the conversation with Bai! I’m happy she knows of the Panda Convention. She can prepare Yun Zi for the Pandaholics!!!!
March 15th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
#90 Danielle and #68 MC: I just watched the video of Tai and Mei..now I’m curious.. where did Tai go? Momma didn’t seem to get concerned until the very end… what happened after that? I watched a video of Tai when he was a baby and doing somersaults.. He really likes to do somersaults even as an adult… very cute..
I can’t wait to read the blogs from the Convention… should be very interesting and fun… please post lots of pictures and videos…
March 15th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
i love every blog you have, you have the most beautiful pictures!!!
P.S. i am coming to the San Diego Zoo over spring break!!! I AM SOOO EXCITED!!!
March 15th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Sounds like Zhen Zhen is quite the chatterbox! Sure wish P.Wong would let us know what all the chit chat’s about!?
March 15th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
#29 GABRIELLE Humans have much mopre expressive ways to communicate than animals, and are able to recognize some similarities between themselves and each other, but unless they know they are related, and tell each other, they would have nothing to alert them. Animal languages are much less complicated, therefore it would be harder for them to conceive of relationships, let alone tell each other.
#30 On the other hand perhaps their chatter is more on the “Hi I’m a Panda………..
#62 LINDA The best way to see why Prince Fluffy-Butt looks tiny one time and bigger the next is to view him 3 ways. Alone, with Bai Yun, and with a Keeper….it never ceases to amaze me how differently he can appear in the same day. With a keeper can be differnt from time to time too….in their arms he looks much bigger than when he is on his Stone Throne awaiting his snacks. If you keep taking photos of him via the postcard sender you could compare how he once fit in the hammock and how much of him now hangs over the edges. Okay SDZ the next thing we need in the enclosures of growing Pandas is and upright log with a growth chart on it.
#63 PAT I watch at night quite a bit, and it seems to me like he spends most nights outside, even if he makes trips inside……I have seen him and Bai have a rolicking good time “fighting” after she has her midnight snack of Bamboo. Lots of nights I do not see Bai, just mostly Yunior either in the hammock or on top of the Stone Throne—but you can only be sure in very dim light when he has his face towards the “visitor” area–you can see his eyes and nose against the white of his face. If he has the other end outward it is hard to distinguish from the curves in the rock.
#68 MC I just realized watching the video of the escaping pandas for the 6th time that the one laying on its’s back is the one laughing at the keeper running to get the one he knows about.
March 15th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
For the GAO GAO fans who want a great photo showing his face close-up, Rita Petita has done it again. While cruising through her wonderful photos I happened upon this one taken within the last 2 months I think. It is a lovely photo and the prospective makes it look like he is looking right at you….Love Grammmie

#90 Danielle NY: Is that really Tai and his mom?? I have seen that video but since I didn’t see any description of it I didn’t know. I did think the room does look like NZ’s exhibit but I wasn’t sure.
That really maks me laugh out loud everytime!! I’ve seen one video where one panda let the other get on top of her/him self to escape during THE earthquake in China. Here I am so happy to find that Mei was happy to help Tai to escapte ( to where??) via that tiny window. I wonder what Tai Shan was thinking and what the keepers there thought of it !! It would be so amuzing to know!
March 15th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
It is 11:00 pm EST and this seems like a busy time for our litle prince. He was active this time last night also. Too bad it is too dark to really see him. I am really missing out lately, every time I put on the cam he is asleeep! He is climbing trees while Lady Bai munches on her boo. I really wish I could get there to see them in person, perhaps someday. Hopefully he will start waking up a bit more during the day so I can check him out. They grow so fast. I am missing the indoor stage where I saw him all the time.
I checked out some of the videos on Den cam of Lily and Hope. She is a precious little bear isn’t she? They have some great video of her. Another little star in the making. She has some powerful lungs on her! I wish we could hear ZZ and the other panda’s at SDZ communicate with each other. What a great field of study. Oh well, if we could only go back and do it all over again! Thanks SDZ!

This is the Monday Night Panda Report, at 9 p. m. Yunior Time. I do not see any action, but the lighting is nice right now. Of course there is no color, and the light is on inside of the non-bear area again. Bai and Prince Fluffy-Butt must really have a great deal of e-mails and phone calls to make—this is 3 nights in a row now. Bad Bears! Oh well when the keepers are not looking bears wil be bears, and especially Pandas. After seeing the video of the two escapee Pandas, and the one from the east coast showing Tai Shan escaping…those guys think fast and CAN move fast if they are of a mind to. Luckily ours do not escape, they just make use of the computers and phones. I hope you all have a great night….see you tomorrow…..Love Grammmie

#88 Anne in NYC :There are more pandas(about 10) to see in Shanghai because of the 2010 world expo. They came from Wolong.
#90 Danielle:OH !Are they Tai shan and his mom in the video?Hahaah, Well done!
As i am living in Shanghai,Youtou is not available here.the first time I saw Yuni in this video:
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTQ0MzA2MTE2.html
After looking this video,he becmeam my favorite one.The post on blog”Looking Down on the World”is awesome!what dream he had there?
# Dianna – Ohio :Tai shan lives in Bifengxia now,and doing well.and The Bifengxia is not that bad like #77Georgie from PA said “No space to walk or grow naturally”.The outside area is about 1000 square meters for Tai shan .The keeps are good there.one keep for one panda cub.and i think all pandas are”ours”.We should focus on these baby pandas too,Maybe a girl baby panda whthin them will be the right one waiting for Yuni .

# 90 Danielle – OMG that was funny! Mei looked stunned. LOL. Gotta love baby Tai!
March 16th, 2010 at 8:07 am
Everyone check out Lani on Pandas Live On website. It looks like she has a beautiful habitat and she was happliy munching her boo. The video with Kohin (?) is good too. What a funny boy…. Maybe he would be a good husband for Su Lin or Zhennie….
March 16th, 2010 at 8:17 am
#94 Dianna, #99 Faye and #105 MC in Shanghai – Yes it was Tai Shan and his mom Mei Xiang. The video was taken by visitors, so keepers were present and I am sure they went to rescue Tai Shan or open the door so he could be reunited with his mom, but that was not on the video… That door is leading to the outside area but there is a small area in between with a metallic fence toward the outside. Tai Shan might have surprised the keepers who could have been outside cleaning or putting out some bamboo. And yes, I dearly love Tai Shan as a baby and as a grown male panda as well. He has such a good character. And I am so happy that he looks so happy and well adjusted to his new home in China. I am looking forward to see how his offsprings will look like and if they will inherit his sense of fun…
March 16th, 2010 at 9:03 am
#99 Faye
Yes that really is Tai Shan and his mom, Mei Xiang.
I am pretty sure that the window he crawled through leads to another indoor habitat.

Yunior sure proves when it is time to sleep, it is time to sleep. He just collaspes where he is. LOL
March 16th, 2010 at 9:59 am
For anyone looking at the cam right now… is Su Lin sleeping upside down? It looks very odd….
March 16th, 2010 at 11:27 am
#108 Dianna – Kohin was moved to Chengdu, the center where Mei Lan just moved to, as the pandas from SDZ will be moved to Bifengxia, or later to Wolong when that center will be rebuild. Before you start dreaming about another pairing, you should know that Kohin and Mei Lan have a common maternal grandfather, Lin Nan. Lin Lan is the father of Meimei, Kohin’s mother and he is also the father of Lun Lun, Mei Lan’s mother.
Meimei is the female panda who was pregnant when she was moved to Japan, she gave birth to Rauhin in September 2000. But Rauhin’s father, Ha Lan, is not the male panda who moved to Japan with Meimei. Eimei is however the father of the six cubs, including two sets of twins, which Meimei had later on. Meimei passed away in October 2008, she was 14 years old. The funny twist to this story, is that Rauhin did stay in Japan and gave birth to a set of twins in September 2008, and the father of the twins is her stepfather, Eimei…

# 105 MC in Shanghai…
I am so happy to learn about the Pandas in Bifengzia.
It pleases me to know that the area where they live is quite large and adequate..
Thank you for sending this information.
The pictures that I saw were on video
and I do not know where they were photographed.
I wish you well, and appreciate any news about your beautiful Pandas!
March 16th, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Finally I saw Yun Zi climbing up in his trees. His brother and sisters took off skywards as soon as they were moved to the front yard but he has been very content to stay low and on his hammock. Of course it is better for his fans to see him but today he tried his climbing legs out when I was watching him. Tentative but still moving. Good for you Yun Zi!

Grammmie–you’ll love Panda Tales–and for anyone else who hasn’t seen it or who came to pandacam recently, you’ll get to see adorable Miss Zhen Zhen and see how different she is from Yun Zi. Bai and Gao make the cutest cubs!!!
March 16th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
I was watching the day Tai used Mommy Mei for his great window escape
There are a couple more funny videos – one of Tai climbing on Mei’s head to get over the tree guard & another of him climbing on her head to climb up the exhibit fencing. Thought I had them saved but no luck finding them – if anyone has rhe links would love to see them again
As we all said if there was trouble Tai could find it
March 16th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
#121 MAUREEN I think there are many of us out here who would want to see the videos that you lost track of….I hope somebody finds them and sends them to the blog so we all can see them. Another way you might find them is to go back to the approximate time you got them from the blog (if that was where), and glance through the comments to try finding them. I am compiling as complete a listing as I can of P Wong’s writings on the blogs, and was helped with an approximate start date….who knows, maybe by P Wong. I am able to move quickly through a blog so that it does not take forever, since the writings are of a distinct style, except when something catches my eye and I start reading……then I might be lost for some time….Love Grammmie
March 16th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
I FORGOT I started writing on a notepad, these blong with #121 MAUREEN…….
#99 FAYE That sounds like another adventure to hear about from our wonderful writers of stories, interviews, conversations, etc. Do I hear keys on everybodies computers clacking?????
#100 LINDA I, too, miss the denning days—-I used to even watch him sleep for hours. Not being able to let go of that has helped me develop the ability to pick out the Pandas in the low light. For most of the evening we can see them in Black and White, then around midnight they turn off more lights making it a lot dimmer—but if they move around I can see them. Good Luck.
March 16th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Maureen, I don’t know about the videos you mentioned but I’ve included the link to my favorite Tai video. If
I did this wrong, go to You Tube and put “Cool Tai and his Hideout” in the search.
Every time Yunior stashes something in his hidey-hole (cubbyhole) I think of this video of 13 month old Tai, especially when Yunior was backing up as he pulled Bai’s Boo up into the “cubbyhole” on the “rock cave throne.”

# 98 Grammmie… AHHH! Gao! I don’t know what it is about that bear, but I have a soft spot for him. I think it’s because he had a hard life early on and is missing part of his ear. Makes me love him more. Thanks for that great pic. Look at his eyes!
March 16th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Danielle, NY, Laurie from Baltimore and Maureen,
First, thank you all for this interesting video and topic.
I really find it fascinating that pandas would help each other to ‘escape’ by climbing on top of another. I wonder what kind of vocalization would be going one when such ’scheme’ is forming in their heads. Or is it just some non-vocal communication that’s passing between them. I can imagine moneys would help each other this way but I don’t think dogs would do that, do they?
Moderator, do you think there is any study or findings about how pandas cooperate with each other? even though they are solitary in the wild? Sorry everyone, as you can see I am really ignorant about animal behavior in general. If you have any info, I would really appreciate it.
Thank you all!
March 16th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
I wish everybody fun at the Panda Convention. Say “hi” to Yun Zi for me.
March 16th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
It is still still light enought to see some color, Prince Fluffy-Butt is just awakening from his nap on the stone throne, and Bai is hanging over the back of it, like she was on her way to wake him and fell asleep herself. I think she is lucky that he awakens so slowly…..I hope everybody has a lovely evening….Love Grammmie
March 16th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
I also noticed Su Lin upside down today…..strange shot…..
March 16th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Tai once hung off the rocks next to the door from exhibit 2 into exhibit 3 and grabbed hold of the window in the door and swung himself through the window. He must have been about 9-12 months old. Mei was beside herself and shoved that mechanical door a good inch. It did not open and they spent the night separated. She was VERY upset for over an hour. Then she went to sleep. Typical panda!!!
March 16th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
#113 Danielle, it surely is an effective way to ship two panda brides — put the future bride “inside” the other panda. LOL!!! No need to ship two pandas in two crates, less energy to lift the crate too. They got a bonus panda bride with good genes too. O what a joy!

#121 Maureen: I would love to see those videos as well… I thought it was just Xi Lan who was so ornery… Xi must have taken lessons from Tai. Wonder if Yunior will do stuff like that to Bai? He just seems so laid back.. maybe that “wild hair” kicks in at a later age?
March 17th, 2010 at 6:36 am
#121 Maureen in Stanwood, MI – Thanks to your remark about more funny videos of Tai Shan, I spend an evening full of laughs reviewing my Tai Shan’s favorites and some… I am not sure I found the videos you meant, but I found some really good one.

Does anyone know what are the ingredients in panda bread? Seems like our recently arrived Chinese bears are chomping it down.
March 17th, 2010 at 7:47 am
#126 Faye – All panda cubs are climbing on their mothers as part of playing, but Tai Shan definitively took it to another level… But sometimes even adult pandas are climbing on each other to try to escape, as seen on this video, in case of emergency:

# 124 – Laura B – Oh my gosh that was so funny and precious! I wish I’d know about US pandas when Tai was born. However, thank God for YouTube and the lovely people who post videos.
March 17th, 2010 at 9:18 am
#133 MC IN SHANGHAI In the USA the zoos try to keep their cubs with their mothers to breast feed until they are 18 months old. Then they are weaned and each then has their own enclosures. It seems that is how long they stay together in the wild. If I were their mother they could stay until they get their teeth….then it might hurt to breast feed them….but then I am not a Panda.
Thank you for sending the video—it is really cute. None of the USA pandas have had to be bottle fed that I have heard of but our crew at San Diego Zoo helped develop the formula for feeding if the cub cannot be nursed by it’s mother. Were the two in the video twins???? We have not been lucky enough to have any twins, even though the last 2 pregnancies that Bai Yun has had she seemed to have twins, but reabsorbed or miscarried 1 before the live births. Her oldest daughter Hau Mei has had 3 sets of twins and one single birth, but missed mating the year of the earthquake. Hau Mei was not the daughter of our Gao Gao, but Shi Shi was her daddy. We are lucky enough to have a pair of natural breeding Pandas in Gao Gao and Bai Yun. I hope the rest of the gang here enjoys the video too……Love Grammmie

#136 ANNE I have heard or read-probably in the blog Pandas Live On (copy and paste those three words to your address bar and it wll take you right there-or just type in the three words just like I wrote them), then you just go back a couple of weeks at the most I think…..to find it is basically a corn bread. Who knew our Pandas could be cowboys—–cowboys love corn bread…..Love Grammmie

From the Pandas Live On site in the entry about Tai Shan dated 2/24/10 (under the last picture for that post)–panda bread is made of soybean, ground bamboo, egg, bread flour, corn, and vitamins and minerals can be added.

Hi! Been busy lately, so apologize for not writing anything lately. I’ve checked out all of the pandacams today! YEA!!! First time in a while I’ve been able to do that! First on the SDZ cam, saw Bai all slumped over the rock stump getting some rest when I checked the cam the first time, then just looked in on the cam a couple of minutes ago, and Yuni was in his hammock all curled up snoozing! NZ pandacams were both showing outside shots. Didn’t see Mei Xiang on cam 1 but did see Tian Tian really going after his boo on cam 2. A very nice, clear, awesome day for them to enjoy after nearly 3 months of really bad cold and snow in DC! Still no news about Mei Xiang’s pregnancy watch from the keepers! I wonder what is going on there? If there is anyone that writes on this blog page from the DC area that can get some news about Mei Xiang, let us know, ok? Pandafans’ inquiring minds really want to know! The AZ cam had one of their pandas on it but couldn’t tell who it was. The panda was eating boo in the indoor dayroom. The latest update about Xi Lan was that he is adjusting to being on his own and getting better at it. Apparently, after enjoying being by himself for a few days, he had some seperation anxiety going on that held him up on the adjustment a little bit. Now as of this week, he’s doing much better, eating his boo and snacks alot more, and has decided that he likes his own space. They did get a weight on him, and Xi the Xman weighs 40.7 kg = 90 lbs! He has done some more growing, you all! On the MZ pandacam, saw one of the pandas leaning against a wall or log structure just resting. I’m still a little bit sad about Ya Ya losing her third panda cub this year! Hopefully, she will get lucky in 2011!
Well, that’s all for now. Gonna get back to the pandacams and do some things around the house, too! Will be back later on!

March 17th, 2010 at 10:56 am
Ok, my eyes are playing tricks on me. It is 11:55 a.m. your time and it looks like THREE panda butts on the rocks. I know that is not possible, but it sure looks that way to me.
March 17th, 2010 at 11:41 am
#136 Anne in NYC – The bread given to pandas in China is called wowotau and is made of soybean, ground bamboo, egg, bread flour and corn. Vitamins and minerals can be added. If I remember correctly I got the recipe from the Pandas Live On website.
#140 Grammmie – Panda cubs develop teeth very early on and get the adult teeth around the time if the weaning. The keepers may have more precise information on that subject.
March 17th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
#144 KAT They sometimes have been seen romping and playing for two hours at a time in the middle of the night….even two or three sessions in the middle of the same night…Pandas do like to party, but it wears them out…he needs the rest.
#145 LISA I know what you mean-the tree helped make an optical illusion so the stone side of the stone throne looked like it was a fluffy-butt too, but when the real big one got there, to the left of Yunior, I could tell much better that it was a rock and a shadow that made it look like two Pandas the same size side by side.
#146 DANIELLE I still would not feed when the first teeth came in—but I am a real wimp…Pandas run around without bras on and chests covered so they get toughened up…..if we did that we might get arrested…even though we were doing it for a good reason…………Love Grammmie
March 17th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
124 – Laura – OMG, I do have Tai’s Cool Hide Out bookmarked & can’t believe how funny he was with that doggone pool –

#135 – Danielle – thanks for finding many of Tai’s funny escapades – he sure had using Momma Mei as a “panda lift” down to a science
140 – Grammmie – ZA’s XiLan had some trouble early on & was bottle fed for a day or so -Seems LunLun had a infection which made nursing painful so the decision was made to bottle feed Xi Lan – you’d never know he had a rocky start but we were all worried sick for a couple of days
March 17th, 2010 at 1:58 pm

#140 Grammie-I know they play and such, and that is very good, however, I can’t stay up that late, so I am sad,
just the same. I miss EVERYTHING! Since I am at work all day, it’s hard to sneak and peek every few minutes to maybe catch them, it’s either them or my job, and right now….I need to work….sadly! I used to keep the cam on all day, but alas….someone snitched!….grrrrrrrrrrrrr
just the same….my heart is with them….always, always.xoxox

Thanks to the SDZ for all the info too about our furry friends.

# 136 Anne in NYC…..I read on a blog from China that Panda Bread is actually a modified corn bread that is steamed rather than baked almost like some English Puddings and the link to read and see Tai Shan is found at :
http://www(DOT)chinapanda(DOT)org(DOT)cn/news/show_art(DOT)php?id=441&hl=en
Simply delete (DOT) and substitute . (a period or dot) and you will see his new digs , as well as read blogs from his keeper…..
To all of the GPF ( Global Panda Fans ) AKA Pandaholics able to attend the upcoming Black and White Celebration remember us please with your pictures , videos , and blogs for all of us only able to attend as virtual guests……. I hope if Lynn does get released soon that maybe we will be able to attend Yuniors First Bearthday Celebration if we have to visit her SoCal Doctors once she builds up some stamina to be able to travel via air ….. Maybe by then the Flood Waters will have gone down in NJ as a lot of major roads are still under water here 3 days after the rain finally stopped …..

#153 Kat Don’t feel sad. When I visited SDV last week, the panda person told us that Yun Zi is sleeping about 16 hours a day. It seems to me that Zhen Zhen was more active. She was always into something and giving Bai a hard time. Wheneber Bai wanted to sleep Zhen Zhen wanted to play.
Yun Zi is the cutest ball of sleeping fluff I have seen.
March 17th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
#153 KAT Well we will just have to plug you in to some of the great videos made by constant watchers like DoxieMom19 on YouTube….to watch some of the things that have gone on. She usually treats us to some every few days, and if you let us know we will try to get you started. There are others who record also, just put Yun Zi in the YouTube search box and you will get a ton of them. Each one you pick will start you on another tributary—so you may be busy for weeks. If you can arrange to get some on your work computer you can watch during breaks……Love Grammmie
March 17th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Except for seeing Bai eat earlier this evening I saw very little action today, but in this very dim light I see them playing together and they seem to be having a good time…..Love Grammmie
March 17th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
#148 Maureen in Stanwood – I remember those anxious first few days of Xi Lan’s life – it was quite alarming when AZ announced that the cub’s condition at that time was “guarded”, meaning everyone was on standby as it was likely touch and go for sweet Xi Lan. The zoo did a wonderful job of looking after him and once Lun Lun was well enough, she was ready to have Xi Lan back with her and it has been clear sailing ever since for the Panda Prince of Atlanta.
Well, 2 more sleeps for those of us coming to the panda convention. I can hardly stand the waiting – I’m so looking forward to the weekend.

Talking about panda bread, I remember about an article from perfectpandas.com some time ago. You can see the recipe and step-by-step process to make it. It’s not the same like wowotou but it is edible for us, human panda lovers. Check this link: perfectpandas(dot)com(slash)2008(slash)01(slash)08(slash)panda-bread/ However, I’m not sure that we can share the bread with our beloved pandas due to some of the ingredients. And the perfect drink should be “panda cappuccino” or “panda pops/juice” (see perfectpandas(dot)com(slash)category(slash)food/beverages/).
There are some other beautiful pictures of panda steamed bun (the black parts made with chocolate dough), panda cookies, etc. I found when googling. But that one has its recipe included. Shall we persuade the keepers or moderators or a San Diegan baker to bake the bread for you for Panda Fans Convention?
The difficult part is only the shaping process. It will be better if you have a cylinder bakeware, that way, you can still enjoy the round-n-chubby look.
March 18th, 2010 at 3:43 am
Lucilla, I would never even think that about you, Bai. In fact, when SDZ published Bai’s measurements I was thinking they were awfully close to mine, so I would never say her butt is big. She is fluffy, like me. Sorry you even thought that.

Good Morning Queen Bai, Prince Fluffy-Butt and all the other Panda lovers out there…..I just tuned in for a few minutes and discovered them having a nice stroll before the Keepers prepare breakfast and set up the fun stuff in the yard. Danielle, NY: How in the world do you know all the Panda lineage? I am so impressed! And thank you for the video clips of Tai. My absolute favorite is Cool Tai and His Hideout. The funniest part was when he had the pool on top of him and he was moving it around… What a silly bear… Is it just the male cubs that are so ornery?
March 18th, 2010 at 8:42 am
# 171 Laurie – YAY! I love FuNi from that one video I saw of her playing with her keeper.
Anyone know when Tai’s cam will be available?
March 18th, 2010 at 9:05 am
#174 Bobbie: Thanks for the video. It seems that Yunior is a very cautious bear when climbing up or down a tree. Is this typical of cubs his age? The other videos I seen, the bears just seem to whip up and down the trees without a care in the world…

To all of you who are convening this weekend, have a blast and give each one of them a special back scratch from all the rest of us. Hope everything goes really well and that the pandas are in good form for you. Keepers, keep a good eye on these panda nuts and hope you enjoy yourselves as well.

Just read on the ZA site that Mei Lan has adjusted to her new digs and is now on public display and is a celebrity Panda in China….. Her mom Lun Lun is now off of exhibit and shares a trait with Lin Lin of redecorating the area she is in by eating all the naturally growing bamboo that used to be in the off exhibit area…. Meanwhile Xi Lan has calmed down after the stress of weaning and has gained weight while Yang Yang like Gao Gao just eats in laid back peace…. The NZ Mei Xiang is now easier to tell apart from Tian Tian due to her belly hair trimming to allow ultrasound of what we all hope is a fruitful AI as it would be nice to have a Tai Shan replacement….Tai is also a big draw to his now Chinese fans and we can’t wait until he moves to his permanent chalet # 1 with a Pandacam so we can watch him again…. Nice camera work today with Princess Lin Lin looking more calm and relaxed again while Yunior and Queen B Bai Yun still played earlier today while sisters and dad ate…..
Still wish that we could join all of the GPF’s about to join in at the SDZ Panda Celebration this weekend but I know I can count on you all for your pictures , videos and stories of what you see and do while we wait for Lynn to be released from the Hospital soon we hope….. Perhaps we will fiinally be able to place faces with many of the SDZ Staff and Fellow Pandaholics…..Enjoy the weekend and keep our virtual seats reserved….. Still hoping to possibly get there for Yuniors First Bearthday…..

#175 Dianna – Ohio – Ever since I started watching the pandas many years ago, I tried to read as much as I could about those beautiful animals. I went on the Meet the Pandas websites from the zoos, on the Pandas Live On website, pandasnews(dot)org website and many more. At one point there was a game on a zoo website about matching pandas to avoid inbreeding, if I remember correctly it was on the Atlanta Zoo website. Since then I got interested in that problem and started making family trees for the pandas living outside China. I just keep that information on hand and answer questions or make remarks about suggested pairing. As I have said before, known inbreeding can be avoided but since pandas kept in the Chinese centers have often been captured in the same area, there is of course the potential of unknown inbreeding, as those captured pandas could be related.

Yippee!!! I have just returned from 3 days in San Diego where my daughter and I went through the SDZ panda line 6 times to see those adorable creatures. Mama Bai is even more beautiful in person, and little Yun Zi is simply darling. My daughter got the cutest picture of him staring right into the camera. The educators were great, too.
March 18th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
Too funny. Bai has fallen asleep with her head on Yunior’s hammock. That was not going to stop him from making room on it to sleep. Amazing that it hasn’t come crashing down LOL or that he hasn’t fallen trying to get into it.
March 18th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
He gave up and is settling on a nap on the rock.
March 18th, 2010 at 1:17 pm
Bruce #178–excellent! I’ll bet someday Yun Zi will want to join the Bamboo Project too.
March 18th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
#127 Gabrielle – will definitely say hi to Yun Zi for you!!
And a huge thank you to everybody with well wishes for this weekend. It will be a dream come true. Bai, Yun Zi, Su Lin, and hopefully a peek at Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao even on our tour. Tomorrow we begin descending on San Diego! #181 Mary in Brooklyn – hello! And oh darn, you’ve alerted the keepers!!!!

TO THE LOCAL SAN DIEGO AREA PANDA LOVERS…….We all may make it to the convention after all. we keep everybody envious of our great weather, they see the sun shining for hours every day while they live in their Igloos and now the pressure is on for a sun filled sky this Saturday. If the sun fails us we alll have to show up with ladders we can perch atop, and two each of the brightest flashlights in the known world. So everybody get lots of rest the next three nights we may have to join the action at a moments notice…..Love Grammmie
March 18th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
To all those attending the Panda Convention — have fun for all of us. Maybe next time. Please give virtual Panda kisses & hugs from me, please.

Loved all the videos today……thanks so much.
When ever I turn on the cam, they are all sleeping….so watching the videos makes for a great day!
Our hot weather is over so be sure to pack a light jacket for the evenings at the Panda Convention! Have fun!
March 18th, 2010 at 4:42 pm
#163 IRENE Great vide—loved it.
#164 MC in SHANGHAI I just try to pass on what others tell/teach me…you are always welcome. I loved the video….showing once again that a Panda Mom is just another piece of playground equipment when the babies do not need them, especially for twins.
#165 MC YOU HAVE DONE IT NOW—–The folks who are curious enough to go see the “ELEPHANT” video will all be howling in laughter on the floor. I almost skipped it, but you have outdone yourself this time. Anyone enjoying it will never be in too big of a hurry to skip one again.
#168 PANDA ANNIE I think they are busy preparing for the first invasion by a group of 50 Pandaholics “in one fell swoop”.
#174 BOBBIE WOOD Hooray….love it, love it, love it….
#178 BRUCE HOORAY for you gettting back to us with more. Will the conventioneers all come dressed as secret agents to this Saturday’s Great Event???
#184 SHIRLEY So glad things were good-we told him to watch for you and your daughter so he could give her that “special” look……..Love Grammmie

Overheard as Bai Yun addresses the Panda Press and a few panda bloggers:
Bai Yun: Ladies and gentlemen and panda bloggers (and you know who you are!)–although I don’t usually respond to comments about myself, preferring to retain my aura of mystery, I must take this opportunity to address you directly!
Ahem!
Ladies–my butt is NOT fluffy! Fluffy is for cubs, and while my cubs have some of the cutest and fluffiest little panda butts in the world, my butt is sleek and toned, honed by years of tree climbing, pandaerobics, and cub wrestling. As a mother of five (so far, anyway) and grandmother of seven–count ‘em, seven!–I feel I must do all I can to stay in shape. I run laps every day to build up an appetite and keep in top trim, and Gao Gao and I have been known to cut a mean rug. Not to say that the rug was mean–no, the San Diego Zoo would never allow anything mean in Panda Canyon–but we really know how to tango in the moonlight, if you know what I mean!
So Ladies (and perhaps a few gentlemen out there), although I thank you for leaping to my defense, I feel that I must say: I wear my panda pounds proudly!
And now, if you will excuse me, I must get back to my bamboo–the milk machine must not go dry! I thank you for your time.
March 18th, 2010 at 5:26 pm
To all our lucky panda fans that will be attending the first (but not last) ” panda convention” – have wonderful time as you meet other pandaholics – please, please take many photos, videos and plan on sharing all with us that are in the “virtual” seats – ENJOY & THANK ALL THE SDZ STAFF FOR ALL THEY DO
March 18th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
I also saw Cathy and one of the other keepers this morning giving our little Prince back scratches and treats. What a spoiled little bear! He did not seem to want them to stop. How cute. Where is Bai while this is happening? Can she see you? I was wondering if she becomes anxious at all. 16 hours of sleep a day! He is like my cat.
I hope all of you panda people have a great weekend. I so wish I could be there with you! I would love to see the Gao family. They are all beautiful!
March 18th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
#126 – Faye – regarding pandas helping each other escape – I think poor Mei Xiang was befuddled everytime Tai used her as a “panda lift” Granted we put human emotions on our pandas but poor Mei sure looked confused when Tai walked all over her to escape – but those pandas helping others during the earthquake looked like they knew what they were doing – we need more panda info & studies
March 18th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
BRUCE IN KC I hope you hear a thousand times, or at least know, what a delight your pictures are, and how much fun it is wandering through your Flikr account. Thank you so much…..Love Grammmie
March 18th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
First time writing, but I’ve been following this wonderful panda family since Hua Mei was born. Hua Mei and Mei Sheng are still my favorite! Don’t get me wrong I love Su Lin, ZZ, and Yun Zi too (YZ may be my #3 fave), but big sister and brother have a special place in my heart. I still have the videotape I purchased 10 years ago at SD zoo of “Hua Mei’s First Year.” I wish I can view it today, but I don’t have a VCR anymore!
I visited Yun Zi and family for my birthday. Seeing Yun Zi in person for the first time totally made my day and still puts a smile to my face thinking about it now. =) First time in line cubbie was asleep in the hammock. Second round cubbie was just getting up. He is absolutely adorable! Even just a little shift in movement made the crowd go awwwwww!! I wanted to stay there all day/night ’till the narrator gave us “the look” and asked us to move along.
Can’t wait to visit again before Yun Zi gets even bigger!
March 19th, 2010 at 2:15 am
Hi DoxieMom: Hope all is well. Haven’t heard from you in a while. I was wondering if you have the video of Yunior trying to get Bai’s head off his hammock (#185 Lucy)? Thanks
March 19th, 2010 at 10:41 am
To all the Panda Conventioneers:
Have a Splendiferous time soaking up every moment.. with the beautiful Pandas!
Just being in San Diego is a plus….visiting Panda Canyon is the very best thing imaginable !!!
I can’t wait to see all the pix of Little Fluffy Butt and his Mama.
Oh…You lucky Ducks…savor the moment!
Maybe next time…. when my Hubby gets stronger..he enjoys the Pandas too…
Almost as much as I do…
Love to all of you Happy Campers!!!
March 19th, 2010 at 10:55 am
I agree with Bai Yun. I think Bai Yun is absolutely beautiful. She always looks so pretty in pictures. Sometimes, I wonder how she does it. Bai Yun looks like she has blush on, her fur is always pristine and beautiful. I think Bai Yun is a full figured gal, and she does wear it well. Bai Yun keeps Mr. Gao interested. I think Bai Yun has got it going on. When I go to the panda cam and see Bai Yun’s full figured derriere laying there on the rock, it makes me happy. It is such a peaceful vision watching Yun Zi, in his hammock, sleeping along side Bai Yun. I get so much joy out of watching Bai Yun eating while Yun Zi is napping. Bai Yun works so hard playing with her cub and eating to take care of her cub.
March 19th, 2010 at 11:01 am
What camera is #30. It is on screen now at 12:01?
Moderator’s note: #30 shows Gao Gao in the off-exhibit area. The Cam numbers are listed at the bottom of the Panda Cam page.
March 19th, 2010 at 11:19 am
To the Moderator: Is there currently something wrong with the Panda Cam?
Moderator’s note: It seems to be working now.
March 19th, 2010 at 11:26 am
CONVENTIONEERS Hopefully you will have a great time this weekend….I too will be just a shadow among you, but hope you enjoy yourselves. Now why are you wasting time reading this…go rest, get ready whatever you have to do for the weekend up so soon…..Love Grammmie
#194 FRANCES Well said….I love it Bai……Will you and Gao be appearring on Dancing With The Stars any time soon?
#199 AW IN LA If you check around with family, friends, co-workers, proffessionals I would bet there is some way to transfer the stuff to a dvd so you can still enjoy it. Do it soon before the tape desintegrates. I know when VHS got so good we knew home movies on the 8mm film would some day be gone, then there were services to copy them on to tapes. Now it is the turn of the VHS. I still have a working model so that if there are ever guests who stay with my son and I that they can watch movies on it because they are not going to get my DVD Player. I have hundereds of movies I copied from TV, mostly on non-commercial tv, and every once in a while I use it to watch something I canot get on DVD…..Love Grammmie
March 19th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
#200 Dianna – Ohio, yikes, it has been awhile, hasn’t it! I’ve been watching daily, but our little guy seems to enjoy sleeping during the day, probably because he’s up in the wee hours playing with Bai Yun!
Here is the video you asked for
Yun Zi was sunbathing in the sunshine in his hammock, and Bai plopped her head in! Besides the opening close ups of Yun Zi, my favorite part is when he has to get creative on his dismount from the hammock since Bai is in the way!
2010-03-18 Yun Zi Shares Hammock with Bai!

To those attending the Panda Convention this weekend, please know I’ll be thinking of you and hope that you provide lots of photos and videos of your get-together for all to enjoy!
March 19th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
#206 DOXIEMOM Ty, ty, ty I was hoping. If you want to see stills…the sixth is the hanging dismount…just scroll up to #191. I was wondering how the sequence happened—since I was getting snaps I did not know how soft his landing was. Thank goodness it was a soft one….Love Grammmie
Dear Bai Yun
We all think you are quite beautiful, that is why we are all obssed with watching you and all of your babies. Panda Fans are all devoted to beauty. May we see some photos of your lovely grandchildren soon???..Love Grammmie
March 19th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
DoxieMom…thanks for the video. Yesterday was our last hot day and it looked like Bai was just looking for a cool breeze in the shade. She was breathing fast.
Glad he didn’t plop off…..
March 19th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
#194 – Frances NYC (aka Bai ) – loved it – can just see Bai at the panda convention addressing the conventioneers
Gao is very proud of is lady love
WE have so many talented bloggers here with wonderful panda imaginations
March 19th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
Thanks DoxieMom!!! It looked like Yunior tried to push Bai’s head a couple times with his own… Poor little fella never had a chance… Especially when Bai’s paw pushed him away..
I think if it had been Tai or Xi, they would have been crawling all over their moms, chewing on any available part they could…
March 19th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
Dear DOXIEMOM: YIPEE!!! Thanks again SO much for the latest video. That was sure a real “ta dah” moment for our little guy.
March 19th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Well this is the big weekend hope everyone is having a good time at the Panda convention. Sure wish I could of been with all of you.
March 20th, 2010 at 8:37 am
As I mentioned in a previous blog, Bao Bao is the male panda living at the Berlin Zoo. He was born in the wild in 1978 and found wounded in 1979. He arrived in Berlin in 1980. I believe he is the oldest giant panda living in captivity. Today I found pictures of him taken in December 2009. http://pandanews (dot) wordpress (dot) com/2010/03/14/berlin-bao-bao/#more-2123
The site is in German, but I managed to get it translated in English through Google, and it comes out quite well.
It is sad that Bao Bao doesn’t have any offsprings as he obviously has very good genes.
If you want to know more about the giant pandas in the Berlin zoo, go to the website www(dot)giantpandazoo(dot)com/home(dot)html and then to the Zoo Berlin page.
Also, on the home page, www(dot)giantpandazoo(dot)com/home(dot)html, you will find all the pandas living outside China listed according to their age.

Helloooo Doxiemom…………:)
Youtube being picky again, can’t get my comments in
2010-03-18 Yun Zi Shares Hammock with Bai!
OMG…just the opening pic of him is cuteness overload “again” DM…:). Awwww, and BaiYun chillin’ w/YunZi on the hammock, (well, she can’t get in it, so chin/head is next best thing, LOL). You know Bai is giggling the whole time….
ADOREABLE!!! (and very very funny) TYSVM Doxiemom….:)
I hope all of you at the SDZoo for the convention have a wonderful time!!!
March 20th, 2010 at 10:27 am
CONVENTIONEERS;
I AM HAPPY TO SEE THAT SAN DIEGO CAME THROUGH WITH SUNSHINE TODAY…I WAS WORRIED ABOUT HAVING TO BRING THE LADDERS AND BIGGEST FLASHLINGHTS KNOWN TO MAN. SO GLAD WE HAVE THE CONVENTION HERE—AND NOBODY HAD TO STAY IN IGLOOS FOR THE WEEKEND. YES YOU CAN ALL MOVE OUT HERE, IF THERE IS HOUSING AVAILABLE FOR YOU. I IMAGINE YOU ALL ARE HAVING A GREAT TIME MEETING AND GREETING EACH OTHER, GETTING TO KNOW NEW FACES, THE ZOO STAFF AND OUR LOVELY BEARS. I HOPE THE PANDA SPEAKERS ENCHANT YOU…..LOVE GRAMMMIE
March 20th, 2010 at 10:32 am
We are having a party tonight in celebration of the Giant Panda Convention.
We see Yun Zi up late fighting with his mom. I need some night vision goggles to watch him at night.
We think he is up late. He is a party boy!
March 20th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Here is a link to an article about the Panda Convention! http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/mar/20/panda-enthusiasts-gather/
It sure was fun to see the pandas and the zoo this morning with this special group. The discussion afterward with Keeper Julie and the moderators was so fun and informative. Thanks to everyone who made this happen!!!
Moderator’s note: Thanks for coming, Lisa, and providing the news link! I’ll preparing a post about the event right now
March 20th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
TYSVM Lisa for the link. I am so happy that you all had a fantastic and very informative day!!!
Have a great time tonight at the party, and look forward to lots of pics and blogs about all the happenings …………
March 20th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
A beautiful picture of Tai Shan on ‘Pandas Live On’. He has climbed a big tree and is looking out over the whole area. Wonder what is on his mind?? Wishing he were back in NZ?? or just enjoying the view?? He does appear to have settled in very well. How long will we have to wait for him to mate and start his wonderful family? Have enjoyed all the pics of Yun Zi lately…I am comparing them with the ones I took in mid January. WOW! How he has grown since then and able to navigate the trees soooo much better. Good luck to our family of pandas all around the world…they are all soooo special.
March 20th, 2010 at 4:32 pm
Baby Panda has been sleeping ALL DAY, hope he does not have the baby panda boo flu….
March 20th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Folks, we still have our Black & White Obsession Banquet tonight – full of photo ops, I’m sure! – and tomorrow is Wild Animal Park. I promise that everyone took tons of pictures, and we’ll share as many as possible.
#217 Lisa, thanks for posting the link right away. I had expected an article tomorrow, but delighted they were right on it.
We are so grateful to the SDZoo for all their help in making this morning’s special tour absolutely magical! We got to see not only Bai and Yunior, but Zhennie as well, and the talks with the keeper Julie and moderators was great!
More soon.
March 20th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
I just remembered it is March 20, and the Panda Fan Convention was today. I am excited for all of you who got to be there in person, and am looking forward to everyone’s reports on the visit. I am sure our favorite Gao Gao panda family were thrilled to have their top fans visiting them in person. I hope it was as gorgeous a day in SD as it was in Richmond, VA. Spring came fast after our very snowy winter.
March 20th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Lucky for those who got to go to the Panda fan convention! I had to stay with my Girl Scout troop, because we were doing camping skills. (I got sunburned, too!) I haven’t been watching for a while (just a wee bit),and yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to see Su Lin! She’s grown since she was a cub. What genders were Hua Mei’s twins? And,if anyone knows their names, what are they? I’ve been eager to know their names and genders since I read both (picture) books about the cubbies at Wolong.
March 20th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
I am so looking forward to hearing and seeing reports and pictures from those of you who got to meet the pandas today–Bai Yun Zi, and Zhennie! Call me triple jealous!
March 20th, 2010 at 8:08 pm

March 20th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
BRUCE IN KC Please check things out with Sooperpana-and his young friend, I could have sworn I just saw two Pandas on the sea floor, in diving helmets, with nets—fishing, in a Sea Food Restaraunt asvertisement on television. I know the Pandas of the world are beautiful, smart, and pretty easy to get along with….but not many are trained for getting into complicated suits, and with helmets on—–it might ruin their mickey mouse ears. Of course our Bai has the most perfect ears I have seen and I know she will not risk them that way, besides she is too busy with babies for the training schedule….but we really need some help on this one. Would you check things out and get back to me???? Love Grammmie
March 20th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
Hi, thanks for the updates on the Panda Convention. I am glad the weather is nice there. It is cold and rainy here. We have had an Andy Griffith and Leave it to Beaver marathon of shows afternoon. (I like the old shows.) Thanks for all the excellent links. Now, you have me thinking about Bao Bao in Germany. By the Grace of God, he will get a mate and have cubs. I liked the news story on being a panda fan. I have always wanted to travel and see the world. Now, I want to travel and see the world in order to see all the pandas. Being a panda fan has become a hobby. Like I have said before, it has opened up a whole new world for us. Now, we are planning on learning Mandarin Chinese as soon as we get the software. I realized that I grew up going to the zoo, and now I take my child to the zoo. What a positive thing. I look forward to videos of Yun Zi and the girls from the Panda Convention.
March 21st, 2010 at 5:10 am
Hi Grammie,
I saw that commercial too, and the pandas in the commercial are none other than Ya Ya and Le Le from the Memphis Zoo! The one that does most of the talking and then disappears at the end is Ya Ya.
March 21st, 2010 at 6:25 am
OMG – what’s baby playing with? Is that a broom on top of his little cave?! Oh, he is so adorable
Hope everyone at the Panda Convention has been having a wonderful time! Give lots of love to the pandas and staff from those of us who couldn’t be there.
March 21st, 2010 at 6:43 am
Yet another photo of the TOP SECRET Project Bamboo – Pandas In Space Program has surfaced. Xi Lan’s official portrait in his orange launch and entry suit was found yesterday. The TOP SECRET photo can be seen at www(dot)flickr(dot)com/photos/45944933@N00/4450879940
Be aware that access to this photo is restricted to Official Panda Use Only!

To all my Pandaholic GPF Family and Friends attending the event we are green with envy wishing we could have been there as Lynn’s recovery has been very slow now starting her 16th. month in the Hospital due to her ongoing battle with Degenerative Bone Joint Disease and its complications including the Blood Clot from ankle to thigh……I can’t wait to see your pictures and videos as well as read your reports on the event at the PandaFandom and SDZ Facebook pages…..
Moderator and Panda Team is the blue item now seen in the Pandacam from hammock to cave top a Panda Firepole for Yunior or a support due to Queen B’s Bai Yun’s recent attraction to using Yunior’s hammock as a pillow ? Either way it will be a great enrichment as we watch Yunior think about what he can do with it….LOL…..
” Panda Peace on Earth , Goodwill to All Living Things……”
March 21st, 2010 at 8:11 am
pandas are sooo cute !!!
March 21st, 2010 at 8:55 am
#229 LINDA I, too, thought this blue thing a broom, rake, or something like that. After careful consideration, and reading your note from over 3 hours ago I decided it must be something else. I am guessing, just guessing, that it is some kind of hanging toy that is fooling our eyes. I will also try to keep and eye on it to find out what it is. The first of us or others to guess correctly wins…….Love Grammmie
#228 and #230 BRUCE IN KC Thank you for clearing up the underwater mystery. I also appreciate you taking the time to find us the Top Secret Stuff—Pandaholics everywhere salute you…..Love Grammmie (yes 3 ms are correct)
March 21st, 2010 at 9:26 am
Spring is in the air at NZ!!!! This morning Tian Tian had access to two outside enclosures and had a plastic pool fill with water in both. I don’t know what the keepers put in the pools but Tian Tian was trying to fish things out of the pools with his paws but never went into the pools as I thought he might… While all that was going on Mei Xiang was sunbathing on top of the rocks, she looked really relax. Later Tian Tian was quite high in a tree getting a bud scratch!!! He had a lot of admirers looking on while he was turning around on the branches to make sure all hitching spots were taken care off. He then came down swinging, upside down, in a fashion that would make Tai Shan proud of his old man!!! And now he is eating a fruitsicle or a cake, not quite sure, but it looks delicious. What else would a panda wants on such a beautiful day?
March 21st, 2010 at 9:47 am
Dear Panda Friends It looks to me like poor Bai Yun and Prince Fluffyy-Butt are worn out ftom yesterday’s convention entertaining. We hope you CONVENTIONEERS found them as beautiful as we do. I could not find them in the early evening so I can only guess that you made them guests at the banquet last night….how wonderful of you……………..Love Grammmie
March 21st, 2010 at 11:03 am
If someone still need a proof that pandas don’t see day and night as we, human, do, you just have to watch the pandas at SDZ sleeping at lunch time, the pandas at the NZ sleeping, it is 3PM but Lin Hui and Lin Ping in Thailand are in the middle of an extensive wrestling match and it is 4AM there…
March 21st, 2010 at 11:21 am
Did any of the CONVENTIONEERS think to check the crowd to see if P Wong or Mr. Tourist were in the group yesterday. It would be nice for us “stay at homes” to know little details like that. I think Mr. Tourist is one of Gao Gao’s favorite visitors, and could have been an interesting addition to the newspaper article. Thank you all so much…………….Love Grammmie
March 21st, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Can’t wait to see the pictures/videos and read the blogs about the 1st Ever Panda Convention. How cool is it that the paper had a write up about it?
I can’t remember who mentioned in a previous blog on Lin Ping and how her playtime is supervised… I was watching a couple nights ago and after she was weighed and carried outdoors in a basket, Lin was climbing around on her structures. Her play area is absolutely beautiful and she did have 2 keepers with her at all times.. It was almost like they were there to assist her and make sure she didn’t fall. It would be interesting to know if this began after she fell. She does seem a bit tentative on her structures. She may also act differently when she’s out with Hui Lin. It’s obvious that she is very much loved and pampered by her keepers but I do wonder about the different approach to the care of Pandas between zoos.
Of course I’m no expert and I’m certainly not criticizing any Panda Care methods but it did raise questions as I was watching Lin Ping who is still a cutie-putootie..

Looks like the Panda Convention visitors wore Bai Yun and Yun Zi out this afternoon. They are both napping happily on top of separate rocks. Bai is on a rock that I didn’t notice on my visit in January.
Some friends just returned from a brief visit to SD last week. Unfortunately they didn’t get to visit either SDZ or WAP. I told them that they didn’t really “see” SD without a visit to one or both places. They know I am an animal “fanatic” so they laughed and said they visited SDZ on a trip about 20 years ago. My friends think I am nuts because of my fascination with all things panda and my love of watching videos of animals in the US zoos. But, my fellow pandaholics on this blog understand. It is nice to know that we are not a minority, but a dedicated majority.

Thanks, Bobbie, #174 for a very cute and funny of the stealth Yun Zi trying to wake up momma for lunch. He decided napping was good too.

I don’t know what else I may have missed today in pandaland, but I’m watching Bai Yun and Yun Zi sprawling all over the “rock” together. Looks like they had an exhausting weekend entertaining the Panda Convention attendees. Nice to see them napping together.

Congratulations to all you conventioneers. I look forward to your photos and blogging about it. Massachusetts was beautiful and sunny this weekend for a change and we all believe that spring has arrived what with the crocuses (crocii?) popped out and daffodills right behind.. I tuned in this am to the pandacam, as I always do, and saw two of the keepers scooping up whatever, hosing the exhibit down. Little Yun Zi was in his hammock, but did seem curious about all the doings. I was hoping that the keeper might give him a little taste of water, but it was all business, and the laying down of treats. All you conventioneers were in my mind this weekend and I wished I could be there too.

Switched over to the polar bear cam……its dark and one has been going forward and backward for hours…never turning around. You can see his legs in upper left corner of screen.
Something tells me that mating is starting over in that exhibit!
He must be worn out with all that walking because I saw him doing it several hours ago.
He hasn’t stopped.
This is just a filler while Yun Zi is sleeping of course……
Moderator’s note: It is indeed breeding season for our polar bears, and keepers say Kalluk had a lot of pent-up energy last night as he waited for Chinook to wake up. He is very focused

Bruce – The photos of the two Astropannas are too cute! Maybe our girls can do some form of undercover work as Secret Panna agents.

While Yun Zi sleeps, I have been checking in with the barn owl cam that a man has nearby in San Marcos, Ca. Molly, the momma just hatched Max. 4 others to hatch over the next few days. McGee brings them their food at nite.
They have a great color camera for the day and a night cam for the night viewing.
Schools are watching all this and the owner come on live at time to answer questions.
He said there are 20 countries watching Molly hatch her owlets.
So I switch back and forth and get not much done around here…..
By the way, Molly’s cam has sound so you can hear the first owlet…..
He should give lessons on great camera quality.
You can go to Ustream and search for the owl box.

Dinner, hugs, sad farewells as our First Annual Panda Convention comes to a close. Some intrepid souls are going back in the morning before their flights depart, in hopes Yun Zi is stirring. He DOES sleep a lot, the young rascal!
We had perfect weather for both the zoo on Saturday and Wild Animal Park today. Our special Panda Convention tshirts and tote bags would get people interested in knowing what this was all about, so of course we would happily tell them. Now there will new faces on the blog after our enthusiastic detailing of how everyone blogs about pandas!
I’ll write up a full report manana, and post it on our Facebook page. Many of the other Convention attendees are planning on adding their descriptions after returning home. All in all, a brilliant success, lots of new friendships, and increased awareness of the panda and its conservation. What more can we ask for?
Moderator’s note: You and your fellow organizers did a great job planning such a special weekend

It may be late on Sunday night but with the bears turned towards the camera…..I can make out Bai Yun and Yun Zi both. She seems to be patiently waiting while he nurses. I keep seeing his head in different positions-he does not intend to leave leftovers at the milk bar, and Bai seems to be fully loaded. Such a peaceful scene in black and white surrounded by differnt shades of gray. It seems Bai want to play now, when Yunior will want to drift off to sleep like a drunken sailor. Here comes the cub toss—perhaps a new game for the Pandalmpics. Will there be a bamboo eating, and/or apple slice finding game there???
I hope we all get to see each other in the morning– probably in a new blog about the convention. I can hardly wait to hear about the goings on….Love Grammmie
