Looking Down on the World
Posted at 1:49 pm March 11, 2010 by Anastasia HorningOur newest cub, Yun Zi, is now seven months old and spends just about all of his time either in his hammock or way up in the trees watching everyone in the queue line. I promise that this is completely normal for our little man! Yun Zi started walking and really becoming mobile later than our previous cubs, but what he lacks in experience, he makes up for in determination.
Early in the mornings he seems to come down from the trees to see what we are up to, and after getting the gist of what we are doing, he proceeds back up the trees. We often get questions about the different perches we put in the trees for the cubs, and Yun Zi has a green hammock! We try to put something in the exhibit for each cub so that they won’t always be so high up in the trees; it works for our guests, and it helps us keep an eye on them.
As Yun Zi gets older, and larger, he will, of course, outgrow his hammock and only be able to sleep on certain branches, but for the time being we love watching him climb in there to settle down for a nap!
Wild giant pandas also climb, and I’ve seen Bai Yun climb up to get a cub or help a cub out of the trees before. Sometimes, when she’s in estrus, she will climb up to see if she can see Gao Gao on the other side of the wall. So the next time you come to visit our bears, don’t be too surprised to see any of our bears climbing!
Anastasia Horning is a panda narrator at the San Diego Zoo.
Note: Yun Zi will be featured the television program Today Weekend (NBC) on Saturday, March 13, between 7 and 9 a.m. A host in New York will do a live interview via satellite at our panda exhibit, focusing on Yun Zi’s new home. The show is airing live on the East Coast; we’ll see the taped version on the West Coast. Be sure to check your local listings, as times may vary!

i will try to watch the show, i might be awake!!!!!!!! 6am is awfully early. i was just on the N.Z. panda cams and one of the cams, think it was 2, was showing the red pandas. they are next to the giant panda exhibit. the other cam showed a sleeping panda. couldnt say if it was tian or mei. mei should be about 2mos 2wks into her pregnancy. bei and yunnie are both sleeping togetther, sooooo cute. i cant believe the pandas dont fall out of the trees when they are sleeping.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
Is that 6AM Eastern time for the live airing?
Looking forward to seeing the bears on the next stop of my perpetual panda tour at the end of this month.
Moderator’s note: Yes.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:22 pm
Thanks, Anastasia, for your observations. Many of us hooman moms have to take deep breathing excercises when the cubs are exploring the tree tops, even knowing they won’t fall.
He is, indeed, a determined little bear. When he sets his mind to do something, he sticks with until he gets it done or wears himself out…whichever comes first. i. e., a tug of war to get a branch of bamboo just where he wanted it. (See DoxieMom’s video of Yun Zi’s Boo-tiful Day.) I will be very glad when I can get to San Diego to see this little guy. Hopefully, I can make it before his first birthday. Don’tcha just love to watch them sleep….with their mouths wide open? teehee! I love to watch them sleep any ol way.
Moderator’s note: Excellent news, Dianne!
At least I just got a clean bill of health from my heart doctor!
March 11th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Thank you for your updates. I really enjoy them and find them informative.
Also, thanks for the “heads up” on the television show on Saturday.
I will record it so I will be sure and not miss it.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:33 pm
Thank you for the fun blogs. I like what was said about Bai Yun looking for Mr. Gao. That is so sweet. One day I noticed Lin Ping and her mom napping. Mom was all stretched out relaxing. I think she noticed that the big male panda was outside their area getting a bath. I think she noticed him watching her. She got up from her relaxation, and started playing and wrestling with Lin Ping. The big male panda did not notice his bath, he was so busy watching mom and baby play. It is funny how much alike girl pandas are to girl humans.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Is that between 6 to 8 am EST?
Moderator’s note: To clairfy, the segment will air live between 6 and 8 a.m. EST and will be shown between 6 and 8 a.m. PST as a taped program.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:51 pm
I am always amazed the the pandas don’t fall out of the trees!
March 11th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
Do the Panda cubs ever forget where they are and roll over and fall out of the tree?
Compared to his siblings at this age, is Yunior more laid back?… perhaps taking after his dad?
Can’t wait for the TV show to see Yunior. Hope Bai has her 15 minutes of fame as well !!!!
March 11th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Must set my DVR to catch Yun Zi on TV!
Thanks, DoxieMom for capturing Zoomie and Su Lin romping yesterday. I would love to see the footage someone mentioned of Bai Yun romping with Hua Mei. It’s so amazing how tiny some of the branches they climb on are.
Oh to be a panda, frolicking in the trees!
March 11th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
I love pandas so much! I’m defiantly going to try a watch that show! I just think it is so cute that our little baby panda Yun Zi loves to climb high in his tree and rest in his hammock! He is the most cute panda bear baby explorer there is! You rock Yun Zi! I love you Yun Zi, Zhen Zhen, Su Lin, Mei Sheng, Hua Mei, Gao Gao, and Bai Yun!!! xoxo <3
P. S.
I also think that it is so cute that Bai Yun sometimes climbs high in a tree to try and see her adorable panda husband Gao Gao!! That is true (and very cute!) panda love!!! <3
March 11th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
I AM THE #1 PANDA FAN!!! I LOVE PANDAS!!!!! <3
March 11th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
THANK YOU for the heads up onthe tv show…..if missed will it reshow???? my sleep patterns change of their own accord all of the time so I never know when I will be awake. If anybody tapes/dvd records it or anything like that will you let me know???? thank you so much….Love Grammmie
March 11th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
And here I was just ready to comment I didn’t think Yun Zi was a “tree panda” but more of a “ground panda” like Pappa Gao – guess that’s because of DoxieMom who manages to catch our little guy exploring his world
March 11th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
#8 DIANNA You are right–Bai deserves her claim to fame along with Gao. I am pretty sure it will be a SMALL SEGMENT of the two hour show, not 2 hours about Yunior, although 2 hours would not seem like enough to Pandaholics.
I have found another way to say Pacific Standard Time–I call it Yunior Time–then I do not have to rememeber if it is Standard, Daylight Savings etc. ……Love Grammmie
March 11th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
i have been to the San Diego Zoo once and that once i visited i thought you guys are sooo clean i saw NO trash and you have a lot of cute animals!!!!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
A few weeks ago when I was at the zoo to see “my” little boy, he was way up in a tree, snoozing away! And of course Bai Yun was munching on boo below the bay, seemingly oblivious. I’ve seen Yun Zi just skedaddle up that tree faster than you can say “boo” and while all the humans are busy gasping, just hunkering down in the tree between limbs that look like they’d break from his weight. But they don’t, and he seems to do just fine. It’s so much fun – albeit it nerve wracking – to watch him!
Hoping we’ll see him be extra bouncy and adventuresome during the Panda Convention! Woo hoo!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:28 pm
Good to know the reason behind the placing of little cloud’s hammock, very good reason for all! Selfish for me,
cause he’s so dang adorable to watch when he decides to climb into it and play for awhile before nappy time. Up close and personal, that’s the view for me!
SDZoo should lower the walls so all can see each other. What would Zhennie do if she could see her mother?
or Gao Gao see his children? I think this would be good for their souls…
Looking forward to the program! Thank you, Anastasia!!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:41 pm
This was a great day–I saw Yunior play with his food, his ball and his mommy, I caught Sweet Su in her “chair”, Gao Gao actually moved during his eating binge—for more food, and ZZ romped, climbed, swung, lept and jumped on branches…..just about everything she could do.
#16 LINDA I hope His Majesty gives you conventioneers a good show. Just in case you might want to pass it along….our local temps have cooled off this week, so bring something warm……the Zoo can get a bit windy and cooler in the canyons, and we want you guys to be comfy. I do not think the keepers will let you get warm by cuddling up with the Pandas….Love Grammmie
March 11th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
Doxiemom….Another great video of Yunior around 1:25PM SDZ Time today as I laughed so hard while watching him live today with the limb butt rub he brought tears to my eyes….. I was glad you caught the video as the camera work was great with his black tip up in the air as he scratched his itch….LOL……This is a must see video for any Yunior fan as he is starting to show the goofiness of his older brother and father with his daily antics….. Neoteny at its finest as I couldn’t stop watching him……LOL….. For those of you that want to see it go to yesterdays post by Doxiemom that went on today or :2010-03-10 Yun Zi’s Simple Pleasures: Treats and Rump Rubs!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6BtzQGFXVM
I also liked the sisters activities as well and can watch them over and over as well : 2010-03-10 Zhen Zhen and Su Lin’s Spring Fling!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxipxMCiQaQ
For all my GPF Family and Friends and SDZ Friends Lynn had a minor set back today but is still on schedule to be released soon,as we talked today via telephone she is hopeful that it will be very soon as 15 months in a Hospital has gotten to her…….. I can’t wait to go to her Doctors in SoCal so that we can see SDZ “Neoteny” Pandas live again as we never get tired of seeing all the animals at the SDZ and spend a large part of each visit at the Panda Research Center and look forward to seeing the new black and white tree frog stare down at us from the treetops and love looking down from the skytram ride to spot the cubby from the air…..LOL…. Moderator any news yet on when the next Panda snow enrichment day might be as I can’t wait to see how Yunior reacts…..LOL……
“Panda Peace on Earth , Goodwill to All Living Things……”
Moderator’s note: No snow forecast on the horizon for pandas
March 11th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Wow, a panda tv star at the age of 7 months. How cool is that. It’s funny trying to picture him climbing up a tree to find a good napping place. Kind of like the 3 bears, where this one is too soft, this one is too hard, but this one is just right. With Yun Zi, they all would be just right.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
I just checked the TV listing and Weekend Today is from 7 to 9 AM EST. Just thought you’d like to know this.
Moderator’s note: Thank you. I’ll make the change.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
DoxiMom: Wanted to let you know that I was able to capture from 12:00 to around 12:30 today while at the SDZ. From when Bai woke up YunZi until Bai finally decided to eat her bamboo
Will put it up tomorrow on You Tube…..However, if you saw anything going on around 12:45 til naptime…you might want to make a video
That little Yun Zi is a DOLL!!! and I think he thinks he is a King
March 11th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
I may have to set my Video recorder to capture the NBC feature on Yun Zi. If I can drag my travel weary body out of bed that early on Saturday I will certainly tune in. He is a cutie for sure. Looking forward to the broadcast. Glad he had not yet started climbing trees when we saw him 4 days after his public debut. He was still investigating things on the ground, especially the pool by the Narrator in the Classroom area.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
How always interesting report thank you.
I am so sadly don`t see the tv-show with Yun Zi and the other Pandas in europe.
Greetings from Austria

Our zoo is very clean but like my yard, with all this rain, I did see a lot of weeds along the roads for the first time at the zoo!
I was watching the current Doxiemom video and I could swear Yun Zi has thumbs.
I don’t understand how he holds that yam and gums it to death. I dont’ think he swallows food yet but likes to chew on it and he does it while holding it very well.
They dont’ have thumbs do they?
Loved the rump scratching too…..clever boy…..
Moderator’s note: They don’t have a thumb but they do have a modified wristbone that can be used like a thumb.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Hi! Love reading articles about Yuni, his climbing skills, and his funny antics. I wonder how much he weighs now? I know that he’s grown some at 7 months old! He’s also still a very cute, adorable, fuzzy, fluffy butt! What else can I say about that?? I just love his adorable cuteness!!
A couple of nites ago between 10 and 11 PM EST, I saw Bai and Yuni having one of their nighttime wrestling matches! That was good seeing them active at nite because I usually will catch them sleeping at that time of nite on the cam. Tonite, I saw them on the cam. Bai was eating her boo while Yuni was napping. What was funny was that Bai was eating with her back to the cam! Who does that remind you all of?? Is Su Lin the one that likes to eat with her back to the cam or is it ZZ? Anybody remember?
Nothing from NZ about Mei Xiang’s progress on her gestation since her AI. They usually have a full pregnancy watch page about Mei Xiang with hormone charts every year, but they haven’t even started with that yet.
Well, gonna go for now! Will check back later on!

#9 Frances in NYC – I may have been the one who referred to a video of Hua Mei’s birth. It is a 60 minute show on Nature, the PBS series. It is called “The Panda Baby” and was produced by WNET13, NY and my son bought it online. It starts with Bai Yun & Shi Shi arriving in SD. They filmed Bai doing forward rolls and running around soon after her arrival at SDZ. It ends with Hua Mei’s first birthday. Hua Mei was the first panda cub born in the US that survived and a collaboration between experts at SDZ and China are credited with that victory. The back jacket says, “Perhaps little Hua Mei will be a key to the puzzle, a bridge to the future. For now, she has become a symbol of hope for the her own species and for all the critically endangered species on the planet.” That’s amazingly prophetic when we know she would go on to be the mother of 7 cubs and SDZ would get Super Dad Gao and he and Hero Mom Bai would go on to have 4 more fabulous cubs.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:56 pm
I love pigs but I also love pandas! YOU ROCK YUN ZI
March 11th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
Grammmie #12 – Don’t worry about missing the highly anticipated TV show starring our little Yun Zi on Saturday, March 13th. The NBC website will probably have it available and it most likely will show up on Youtube. Now, please don’t fret about your changing sleep patterns.
March 11th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
Where can I get the details about the Panda Convention. I have been very busy for the past 2 1/2 months and have not kept up. Is it March 20th? That is what I have on my calendar. That is three days before the end of my class and I have a report due and a final so may not be able to fit the convention in … but sure want to try! Isn’t Yun Zi … just the most beautiful and sweet little bear! Love to watch him!

Thank you for the information. I love the panda’s but what I really love is the staff that gives us all such wonderful information! I have my dvr set for Saturday A.M.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
May Bai Yun and Gao Gao continue producing cute babies!
The most percious animals in the world.
March 12th, 2010 at 2:34 am
Thank you for letting us know about the TV show that will be on. I will be glued to my tv hat’s for sure.
March 12th, 2010 at 3:35 am
Yeah, I’m gonna have to set my DVR since I’ll be busy getting ready to see them LIVE @ the Panda Convention!!! Woo-Hoo!!
The day is finally here!
Has anybody checked out the Polar Bears lately? They’re such characters. They seem to be so happy, romping around together, playing w/their enrichment. Watching them wrestle in the water looks to be exhausting! Sometimes it seems like they go at it for hours! I can’t wait for the re-opening of their new exhibit on 3/26.
March 12th, 2010 at 5:07 am
With an assist by the person with the flashlight a few minutes ago I saw two Fluffy-Butts on the rock sleeping this morning. It was harder to see them until the assistter turned up. This is the first time I have seen light from outside the enclosure at this time in the morning…is this usual??? Thank you…….Love Grammmie
March 12th, 2010 at 5:25 am
I love the thought of Yunior climing down in the mornings to check up on you, and then going back up once he’s got your routine down pat! what a smart little panda
March 12th, 2010 at 5:53 am
Could someone please tell me how to get to the “Mommy Scared Me” video with Xi Lan. I’m not sure I have the name right but I can’t find it anywhere. Well two more doctors appointments to go to right now, so I’ll check when I come back and hope that someone was kind enough to answer me.
Thanks Pandafamily!!
March 12th, 2010 at 6:18 am
Thanks, so much, for telling us about the segment on Today Weekend, I will certainly be watching it. Also, for your new blog, as always, very informative. The last time I was at the Zoo was when Su Lin was a baby, and she was up a tree, so did not get to see much of her. I hope to come again in the fall, before Yun Zi is weaned. My daughter lives out there so I am lucky.
Take care all you wonderful keepers.
March 12th, 2010 at 6:31 am
Eastern Standard Time was known as Tai-Time until his move to Tai-na. SDZ is Yunior Land to me as NZ was Tai-land and Atlanta Mei-Land. I rarely work on Saturday’s only when they are short on volunteers and of all mornings for me to have to work and miss Yuniors TV spot. Hopefully someone will do a You Tube clip.
I once asked Tai’s keeper if she could train him not to go out on the skinny tree branches and bounce as it was too scary to watch and she laughed and said they know exactly what they are doing and its fun for them.
March 12th, 2010 at 6:55 am
It is 6.40 in the morning and Yun Zi climbing very high on the tree, i was nervous but Yun Zi was cool LOL
He is a very adorable Prince and i wish to cuddle him.
Good morning San Diego in Vienna is now afternoon
March 12th, 2010 at 7:03 am
Yun zi is so lucky with his mom and good keepers and all you guys.
March 12th, 2010 at 7:09 am
Article (3/11/2010) from China Panda Wolong site, “Fu Long and Tai Shan are Neighbors,” displays bottom photo which shows Tai Shan on the ground and Fu Long high in the tree. This means if pandas have good distance vision, the 2 can see each other.

Thanks again SDZ for this great update on the pandas. Will be recording the Today show on Saturday. Thanks for that update. I don’t usually watch on the weekends. I’ve called several of my friends to alert them to the event.
It’s so wonderful to read all these updates. Really appreciate all you’ve done and still do.

Pretty early for me but I will get up early to see my little guy “live”. He is much too cute now from the stick of butter back in August. I,too, love all the updates.
Blessings & have a nice weekend,

Thank you for the interesting blog. I liked the part that Bai Yun looks for Gao Gao when in estrus. I will probably miss the news on NBC tomorrow because my dog has a vet appointment for blood work. My vet likes to check him every 6 months because he is on phenobarbital because of seizures. He has not had one since I adopted him.
March 12th, 2010 at 10:24 am
We picked a perfect day…March 11th…to visit the SDZ. Knowing that the pandas were certainly going to be sleeping early in the visit, we chose to visit the Gorillas, Orangatans, Bonobos, and the birds before heading to Panda Canyon. When we arrived at PC around 11:00, the bears were sacked out. We visited the birds of prey and the lesser flamingos, and then returned to the pandas. Still sleeping… We returned got a soft drink at the panda cafe and then returned shortly before noon. Su Lin was awake and By Golly, Bai Yun was waking up….lunch time??? She then woke up little Yun Zi!!!!
After Bai was certain that Yun Zi would remain awake, she left the exhibit so that the keepers could bring in lunch. Yun Zi posed for his fans and delighted in the snacks he received. What a Little Prince
I’ve posted video on You Tube:

Little Zhennie is zoom zoom zooming again… and having a ball with her now-destroyed box and something that looks like a pillow. She’s adorable!
March 12th, 2010 at 10:51 am
Zhennie needs a playmate!!!!!! Pleeeeeeease?????
March 12th, 2010 at 10:52 am
Thank you for the blog. The San Diego Zoo does a really good job of helping the public follow these wonderful creatures. I love the hammock that you constructed for the little guy.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:12 am
No one can accuse Zhennie of not using her imagination playing by herself! Dragging her pillow over to the
pond, ripping her box apart, swinging from the branches, ripping them off and tumbling with them on the ground.
There she is again, reaching way up top of the tree she’s climbed…secretly, I hope she finds a way to jump over to the other side of the wall….and find her little brother to play with! She really has energy today…she knows it’s
FRIDAY!!!
March 12th, 2010 at 11:15 am
Zhen Zhen has a serious case of the zoomies!
March 12th, 2010 at 11:22 am
Hi Panda fans, I am sitting here watching ZZ run, jump, roll, hang from the trees and off she goes. I now understand why she has the nick name ZOOM ZOOM!!!! Holy buckets she is quick and just having a ball entertaining herself, lol. I wish I had half that energy, all would be great. OK, so I was thinking of calling my landscaper and asking him to put a tree thingee in the backyard so I can scratch my back like Yunior, only my back not my rump hehehehe but my neighbors would probably call for the white jackets. Oh well, just a thought. I loved how Yunior kept a biscuit from Mom and had a ball with it. Have you all noticed that Yunior can’t seem to eat unless his leg is up there also, so darn cute.
Bobbie Wood, such a nice video of Yunior and Mom and great close ups!!!
Grammie, how are you doing this fine day.
Well, back to cleaning house, have a great Panda day all and thank you everyone.
March 12th, 2010 at 11:56 am
#53 BOBBIE Great video, and the Mozart with it was enchanting. When I am in the mood for classical Mozart is my favorite. I love that when you treat us to a video it is complete from title to credits…very well done. Thank You….Love Grammmie
March 12th, 2010 at 12:09 pm
#50 TINY I am a twisted, sick soul–I can never watch that clip just once….it is 3 or more times each time I see it including today. Do I have Partners In Crime out there?????
#55 KAT Are you volunteering to join ZZ in her yard to swing from branches, climb, jump, bathe, etc. right along with her….then, when she is in the mood you would get to wrestle with her??? She may even make you do the bamboo stipping at meal time…and I bet you would not get any apples, yams or leaf eaters biscuits. She might make liker her mommy and check your teeth to see if you tried to squirrel some away…..Love Grammmie
March 12th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
#59 Debbie…I am in need of a nap-but otherwise I am okay so far. I never know how a day will play out…it keeps me from being bored. My home is in serious need of cleaning….so if you run out of things around your house……
By the way there are 3 Ms in grammmie…a long story, but it is not used by anybody else so I do not have computer names with numbers after them……Love Grammmie
March 12th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
#53: Bobbie, Perfect music for a perfect video. Thanks SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!!
March 12th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
#50 Tiny
Thank you sooo much Tiny for the reply. I should have known it would be you who would be so kind and take the time. Thanks friend!
March 12th, 2010 at 12:39 pm
Goodness! I peeked into PandaCam and got to see Yunior’s cute little bottom rolling around and the little dot on his tail. Don’t know what he’s doing, but it sure is cute! Can’t believe how fast he is growing.
March 12th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
3:52PM ET… The camera has a close up of Yunior’s sleeping face and it’s just so angelic. Such a delightful picture-perfect moment to end my work day.
March 12th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
Bobbie, that was wonderful! Thank you!
March 12th, 2010 at 2:37 pm
When I read today’s and Monday’s Panda Updates on the Atlanta Zoo website about Lun Lun enjoying the live growing bamboo in the off exhibit yard, it reminded me of a story about Su Lin: “Decorating Diva Strikes Again” http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/blog/2008/09/18/decorating-diva-strikes-again/
It seems that it is not the only thing that Lun Lun and Su Lin have in common, on Sunday Lun Lun had some fun playing in the pool… It seems that girls will be girls wherever they live…
March 12th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
P Wong Says #47: Thanks for the link on that site. Would it be possible for a chat between Tai Shan, Fu Long, and their playmates? That would be fun…..the new city-guy, joining the country boys!
Bobbie Wood #53: Thanks for that video. Ditto what Grammmie #60 said. Mozart goes beautifully with a lazy day in Panda Canyon.

# 53 Bobbie, thanks for that wonderful video! YT is being a pain and won’t let me comment so I’m doing so here. That was a wonderful close up of Yun is all his glory. I heart those lil panda paws! And the ever-so-patient Queen B is looking lovely as always.

#66 MARIE I hope lots of us got some good closeups of our Fluffy-Butt’s face……..I blew it up as a wallpaper for my desktop, and it turned out pretty good. Not ultra sharp but endearing just the same….Love Grammmie
#68 DANIELLE Thank you for the heads up on the old blog item about Su Lin and the Bamboo. It was a fun read….my imagination went wild picturing every word…..Love Grammmie
P WONG—–all conversations you tell us about are great—–have at the City Guy and Country Boys…Love Grammmie

I Spy With My Little Eye……a large Bai Yun eating bamboo and a young Yun Zi doing something on top of the “rock”. The “big light” is aimed at us—not him, so it is hard to see what he is up to….but I will keep watching for when vision clears…..Love Grammmie

Somebody is there reading the blog—the light just went out and I can see much better. Our Fluffy-Butt decided on a nap while his mommy eats….Love Grammmie

Hi, you all! I was on the pandacam tonite, and there was Bai eating her boo, Yuni up in the hammock napping. Then, Bai was done eating and got on the rock stump to take her nap.
I read your newest update about Yuni and the other pandas, and it was real good. The pic of Yuni that you put in with the update is so awefully cute! It looks like he’s waving his paw to say HI to everybody that sees him! I’m gonna repeat myself—I would just LOVE to hug that adorable cuteness of a cub! Yuni just looks so content, happy, and just enjoys everything around him! Did I read a comment right about Yuni starting to eat solid food? That’s another major milestone for him to make at 7 months old! I think that he is getting old enough to start becoming interested in eating some bamboo by now. Hope I’m right about that from what I have read in past updates and articles, moderator!
Read the latest update about Mei Lan from Atlanta. She’s finally back in her normal stride and routine after a rough beginning at Chengdu, China. She also just got released from quarantine and getting into her new enclosure now. She’s also back to eating her normal amount of boo and getting used to the Chinese variety, along with the snacks that her keepers give her everyday. Her transition to her new enclosure should be much easier now that she’s gotten used to everything around her. AZ panda keepers and vets have also done a physical on Yang Yang a few days ago. They gave him a thorough physical exam, blood and lab work, and took some semen from him to be frozen. Yang was anesthetized thru this whole procedure. They also got his weight and measures to update his file: Nose to tail–68 inches; tail length—6 inches; chest—45 inches; abdomen—46 inches; neck—32 inches; weight—289 pounds. Yang is a BIG BOY!! They’ll probably do Lun Lun and Xi Lan’s physicals later. Plus, they are also waiting to see if Lun will come into estrus now that she has totally weaned Xi Lan. Keep your fingers crossed, everybody!
May not get on my computer tomorrow because I’ll be busy at my mom’s, but don’t forget to set your clocks and watches UP ONE HOUR by tomorrow nite (Sat., 3/13). We are going back to Daylight Savings Time again on Sunday, 3/14! YUK!!! My reminder of the day!
Gonna go and check pandacam one more time. Maybe I’ll catch Bai and Yuni wrestling again at nite!

9:10 AM EST Great interview; waited for it quite a while. Looks like it’s just getting light in San Diego. Loved seeing the Pandas we were fortunate to visit last month. Yun Zi loves that hammock! Thanks for letting us know about the interview.

What a great advertisement for the ZOO! An opportunity for any in the world, local and all others to see the cub and Bai Yun! Of course I am assuming there are any people left anywhere who do not watch their antics and the growing cub. I might have missed it, but you all will have it, I hope, as you do the others. They have become paart of my retirement and i watch all of the videos taken by Doxie mom. What a blessing she is to those of us who wait for them, and probably, like me, play them over and over again, from his birth to the present, and also love to see the others, ZZ and Su Line and even Gao Gao, for a flash. Thank you all for the posts explaining their lives. You are our enrichment!

Hi, Saw the the broadcast on NBC this a.m. live here on the east coast and Yun Zi was asleep in his hammock. Turned on my panda cam 2 hrs later and he was still in the same position…sleeping away…what a little lazy bones. But adorable…love him.

#31 ROSE A great big THANK YOU for telling me about how to see something missed on Today Weekend. So far I have watched it twice.
For anybody who missed the segment on YUN ZI, BAI YUN, and STARRING KATHY HAWK AS KEEPER give this link a try.
http://today (dot) msnbc (dot) msn (dot) com/ Remember to take out spaces and (dot) and substitute with a period, like a normal link would appear. If it is not still march 13, 2010 I am not sure if you can reach it by using this method, but it works right now.
Simply scroll down until you see Yunior’s photo under PETS AND ANIMALS and click on it for the video. Perhaps somebody has copied this to YOU TUBE or FLIKR to share with us in the future.

Further to #78 Grammmie – you can also see the interview on the PandasLiveOn site.
Signed on at 11:38 am SD time and saw Su Lin utterly destroying/dismembering a cardboard box – she showed no mercy but had loads of fun, I’m sure. She’s quite active this morning going from one thing to another. Good to see her on the cam.
Well, six more sleeps before we make our way to SD for the giant panda fans’ convention!! I still can’t believe we actually are making this happen. Someone planted the seed of an idea and it grew!! One person really can make a difference!

#53 BOBBIE – TYVVM for the video. Sun, snacks and Mozart in the morning. What a life!
Any chance that SDZ cold post the NBC video for us who have missed it?

#53, Bobbie, thanks for a fabulous video of your visit with Bai Yun and Yun Zi. I am glad that narrator allowed you to stay long enough to get a great video capturing the real personality of Panda Prince Yun Zi to share with his many fans. He is such a ham, and seems to thrive on keeper and fan attention just like his siblings before him did. Looks to me like Keeper Kathy is his main keeper, as each of the pandas seems to have a main keeper, although all the keepers care for all the pandas as well. That way one person can build an extra special bond with each panda and help them through all the necessary husbandry tasks. When the panda cubs go to China, that special person goes with them to help ease them through the transition and the journey. Lisa helped Mei Sheng, and I am not sure who is the one who is working the most with Su Lin.
Yun Zi sure loves his hammock. It looked in the video like it was hard for him to move away from his cozy spot. I am glad it was installed so he has a comfy place to nap, near mom, and visible to visitors. You could see him snoozing away while Bai Yun ate breakfast on the TV live broadcast and interview with Kathy.

My grandson and I just found the panda cam and have been greeting each day while checking in on the pandas. We check in several times a day! We see only one in the enclosure?? Is this the baby or the mom? It’s hard to tell from San Francisco! We love it!! Also love the polar bear cam but they lie around much more…..not nearly as much fun!!
Moderator’s note: Welcome to Panda Cam! If you scroll to the bottom of the Panda Cam page, you’ll see a listing of the Cam numbers and what bear each Cam focuses on. That will help as you learn to recognize each of our pandas.
