Su Lin Redecorates
Posted at 12:25 pm December 17, 2009 by Chris TratnyekWhat a morning we had yesterday! Su Lin was full of energy after a short nap, playing with a burlap bag and carefully sniffing it all over. The keepers had not doused the bag with spices or scent, as they often do, but there was something the panda liked about it. Later on she was extracting slivers of bamboo from the bag and munching away. Done with that, she gave her plastic donut-shaped toy a workout, including inserting her left foreleg through it and walking around wearing it!
Then it was up in the tree, the Chinese elm on the right side of the enclosure. Up and down, hanging by her hips, rubbing and bouncing, she gave a great show. Energy undiminished, she went way out toward the ends of the branches, bouncing some more. She had a look in her eye as she checked out the pine branch extending toward the elm branch, and she went for it. Su Lin grabbed the pine branch and was pulling it toward her. Was she going to transfer herself to the pine? No, as she stretched from the end of the elm branch to the pine, the elm tree started slowly descending toward the ground! Apparently the rain-softened earth let go of the roots, and the tree fell over, resting on the big stump toward the front. Su Lin was smacked by the end of a branch but was uninjured; she began playing in the now-horizontal tree.
Zoo guests were astounded! Open mouthed, we all watched the panda jumping on the newly repositioned branches. What fun! Next, a quick radio call to the keepers and a request for the guests to exit the exhibit. We had to be sure the panda did not have a way to get out of her enclosure. She didn’t. The keepers rattled the treat bucket and called to Su Lin to come into the bedroom. She ignored them, climbing around and hanging on the branches, sniffing and digging at the exposed roots, enjoying her rearranged furniture.
After playing for a bit, the panda became interested in the proffered treats and came over to the fence, got her treat, ignored the keeper’s calls, and explored some more. Finally, she went into the bedroom, and then it was safe for the keepers to enter and examine the damage. In short order the San Diego Zoo’s arborist arrived to assess the situation. Horizontal looked okay to him, and he thought the tree would survive. It was moved a little so it didn’t rest on the stump, and some branches were trimmed so Su Lin could come back in and enjoy her redecorated enclosure.

Chris, what a exciting morning! we will miss Su Lin when she goes to China!
December 17th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Su Lin certainly keeps zoo staff on their toes! I have to admit, my heart is in my throat each time I see a panda bouncing on the branches. I watched Tai Shan fall several times from trees, usually when he’d gone so far out on a limb that it couldn’t support his weight. The branch would bend lower & lower, Tai would slip but catch hold of the branch. He’s usually hang there for a little while, waving his legs & trying to get back on the branch. After a while he’d give up & let go. He also liked to climb a fallen tree near the rocks, then leap into a pine tree–the branches would SLOW his fall, but weren’t strong enough to “bear” his weight. He loved it! RoxandaBear of Flickr has video of it here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/roxandabear/2478444872/
December 17th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Any video of this? I want to see her wearing her donut toy…. DoxieMom – can you help us?
Moderator’s note: I don’t think the Panda Cam was focused on Su Lin at that time…
December 17th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
You mentioned that once Sue Lin was in her bedroom it was safe to enter her exhibit. I thought you were able to interact with all the pandas one on one. Once they are adlults are they dangerous to the keepers?
Moderator’s note: Keepers do go in with the cubs up to a year, and by then a yearling panda can be very rambunctious, and those teeth and claws, even in play mode, could hurt a human.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Oh My Gosh
Oh! to have been at the SDZ!!! Thank you for the great update….the written word created great visions of Miss Decorating Diva re-designing her exhibit!
December 17th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
Never a dull moment! Glad to know that both Su Lin and tree are OK.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Horizontal tree?! How silly!
December 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Oh how funny – I wish I could have seen her in action!!! I’m glad she didn’t get hurt. Typical young lady – needs some CHANGE in her living area!! thanks Chris for the update!!
December 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
P.S. #105 Claudia [previous post], Yes, there is a panda in It’s a Small World. It looks like Bai Yun. (Just too small. But it probably weighs as much as Bai!) I love sitting on that side of the boat. (Panda mermaid princess side.) I think they should add the SD Zoo to Soarin’ Over California!!!!!! (You fly over the pandas, maybe) I am glad Su Lin likes to decorate….she might be a home decorator in her near future. Has Zhen Zhen taken time to decorate? Or is she still up a tree?
December 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
This story is very funny!! I wish I had been there to see Su Lin’s antics!!!!!!
December 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
What a great story! Wish I had been there to see it in person.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Now that sounds like a fun panda day.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
thats our girl!
December 17th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
Well, there is nothing wrong with redecorating as long it is safe. Every woman whether it me human or panda likes to redecorate. In this case it is a female Panda. And she was having fun too. And you should have fun while redecorating and Su Lin was very definitely having fun.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Wished all that activity had been on Panda Cam!!! Sounds like she was having a wonderful time.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Oh I wish I had been there to see that.
I was lucky enough one time to see Mei Sheng go way out on one of his branches and bounce around. He would look at the visitors and then do it some more. He loved having an audience. Did Su Lin react like this? They are clowns at times.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Thanks for the update and interesting info on Su Lin. We are all so entranced and enchanted with the newest cub that we tend to forget that there are other youngsters who are equally charming. Way to go, Su Lin! Keep ‘em guessing!
December 17th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
It sounds like she had a great time. Too bad it was not on Panda Cam. I guess she must of been a very tired panda after her decorating bout.
Good for her !
Shirley
December 17th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Dianna #3, they did not show Su Lin redecorating on PandaCam! I would have loved to have seen her as she always has exhibited such talent!! The SDZ arborist will miss her dearly, as will we all!
But I can help those that missed or would like to see again Yun Zi exploring the Bedroom around 11:15 this morning! And Dianna, you weren’t seeing ghosts, just a very lucky Panda Team member!
19 week old Yun Zi, after sleeping most of the morning, gets out of the den and explores the bedroom ~ the platform/scale, the drinker, the bolt on the wall, the grill in the floor ~ all were fair game for this curious cub today!!
The link for “Yun Zi Explores Outside the Den!” is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eglNqBpD1uA
Please keep in mind that most of my videos are sped up so that I can fit more action into the 10 minute YouTube imposed limit! So Yun Zi really doesn’t walk that fast, or Bai doesn’t really twirl him that quickly!! Thank you!
December 17th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
I watch the panda cam while I play online games. I just move the pages so they both fit on the screen at the same time. I’ve been watching Bai Yun this afternoon and she has been pacing nonstop for quite a long while. Why is she doing it?
December 17th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
I guess Lin Lin listened to Cyndi Lauper “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”…LOL…..I watched her again today doing her bat impression by hanging upside down before she hung by her front legs from one of the branches.. She will be missed by all , but who knows maybe we’ll get one of her future bred babies back into the USA in the future……I also enjoyed watching Yunior explore today as he wasn’t a Night Owl but was all over the place exploring as you can see on DoxieMom’s video…..Mom Bai Yun did her best 1 paw push away while she ate…LOL….He sure is becoming a rambunctious explorer today instead of his usual night owl self….I guess we are nearing the end of the denning phase as he discovers there is more to see then the walls of the den,as he now fills the doorway when he lies down across it….
“Panda Peace on Earth,Goodwill to All Living Things.”
December 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
What a fun time it must’ve been, Chris. Su Lin was in her glory! Thanks for sharing your amazing morning.
Thanks DoxieMom for the Yun Zi Explorations video. He is just too much fun.
I have just become the latest in Yun Zi’s many adoptive aunties!!! I got his adoption package for Christmas. Husband is paying; it was just easier for me to order since I knew exactly where to go! Ohhh, now I feel even closer to the little cubbie.
Have a wonderal day all!
Moderator’s note: Please thank your husband, Diana, for such a wonderful gift!
December 17th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
What fun Susie Q had today, and thank goodness she didn’t get hurt.
December 17th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
I see the den is stripped and cleaned. Are you suggesting to Bai that it is getting time to vacate it? Or just letting her set it up to her personal liking?
December 17th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Thank you Chris for your wonderful narration – Su Lin is such a charmer
Doxiemom19 – another fabulous video – you could almost guess when Bai pushed him away the conversation would have been ” Don’t climb on me Yun Zi – go and explore the room”.
Can this little guy get any cuter?
December 17th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
I can’t believe I was stuck in the office while all this was going on! Bah humbug!
December 17th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
DoxieMom, your videos are priceless. Thank you so much.
Leave it to Su Lin to bring down the tree! What a girl she is.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Doxiemom #19 … I came home after taking my final at school and turned on the panda cam … about 11:00 … today and watched the whole thing … Didn’t it seem like it took him forever to finally decide to go through the opening into another room???? I saw him exploring and watched his mom brush him aside … and I saw that “person” crouching on the floor. The person took me by surprise and the quick switch to Su Lin left me wondering what was happening???? I am so glad you caught it on camera because I wasn’t sure what I saw! Thank you again for the fun videos. I have enjoyed each one. And thank you sdz for the fun report on Su Lin. Wish I could have been there … sigh….
December 17th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Thank you Chris for your article and for keeping us updated on the happenings. I am also glad that Su Lin wasn’t hurt when she fel. I too would have loved to have been there to watch her redecorating day. I’m sure that it was a sight to be seen.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
What a strong willed Panda! I think it is funny that she determined what her priorities were–and I guess the treats did not win out over exploring the newly downed tree! Quite a determined female she is.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
If you saw all this going on, why didn’t you grab a video cam?! It sounds priceless, your description of Su Lin accessorizing w/her donut! OMG!! How cute that must have been! Lets hope some guest captured it all on tape, and will post it on YouTube. How great would that be?! Then again it probably wouldn’t be as good as you’ve made us imagine. Thanks for sharing.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
OMG DoxieMom……………this video is so adorable too……………….I don’t care how slow his progress is, to watch this little man explore like this and the part where he was standing up against the platform and fell straight back, OMG, my sides were hurting from laughing so hard………he’s quite the character and I for one don’t want to see him grow up too fast, but it seems Bai Yun has a difference of opinion. LOL.
I so wish I could have seen SuLin. I do so miss her and ZZ. So glad to hear she is doing well. TY SDZ!!!
December 17th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Awww, thanx for the blow, by blow account of her re-decorating Chris !! I love hearing about her little antics, and redecorating, and running around wild. I’m sure going to miss her when she moves to China. =(
Any way we can get more cam time with Su Lin ? We dont have much time left with her, I know, and some of us cant make it down there anytime soon. Thanx again Chris. Maybe, just maybe Doxiemom has a video of Su Lin’s antics from today.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
#2, DD: we have a term for when Sooperpanna Tai Shan would jump into the pine tree and ride the branches down, it’s “Tree Surfing”! The boy really seems to love doing it, throwing his front paws in the air just like he was riding a rollercoaster!
This is one of the reasons it is so easy to get so attached to “our” pandas, their whimsical behavior!
December 17th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Oh wow…is China prepared for this wild child of a panda? I thought that most pandas are pretty sedate and composed most of the time. Is she exceptional in her behavior and a very free spirit of a bear?.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
What a great story and thankfully no harm came to the lovely Su Lin. I’m with Karen, all girls need to redecorate once in awhile…she’s really a sweet panda and definitely all ‘girl’!
December 17th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
That Sun Lin is one wild and crazy girl. We’re sure going to miss her but they’re going to be in for a lot of fun in China when she shows up.
#2 dd and 19 DoxieMom thanks for the great videos of Tai and Yunior.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
What a character our Susie is! I’ve read several blogs where she’s redecorated her enclosure. I love her and will most certainly miss her. I have some pictures of her from 2007 just before her brother, Mei Sheng, left for China and the twinkle in her eyes was adorable. She’s definitely a mischievous little character! I’m hoping Yun Zi will have the same personality when he’s older…
December 17th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I would like a picture of Su Lin in her donut toy! I have a orange cat named Chunky! He does not get any girlfriends. Here is a story about Yun Zi and Chunky.
Yun Zi
Chunky
Open Scene. Teenage Yun Zi dressed in Blue surf shorts and sunglasses with his friend, an orange tabby named Chunky, at the beach.
Chunky: Dude, how’s it going?
Yun Zi: It’s going good.
Chunky: how’s it going with the girls?
Yun Zi: Going good. I have this laid back approach that the girls just love.
Chunky: That’s not my approach, i scratch them with my paw and chase them around.
Yun Zi: Dude, no wonder you can’t get a girl. This laid back thing works for me, the girls LOVE me.
>:)
December 17th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Doximom #19: Thank You for putting the new video up! Adorable! I was making a DVD for my Mom in KC of one of her Great Grands here in SoCal at the time so without your dedication, I would have missed the entire playtime
I thought the Christmas Pagent I was working on was pretty cute….but then, I got to watch Yun Zi discovering lots of reasons to leave the den.
Moderator: Which tree was the one that fell over….on, as we would view, the right side or the left side of the pool? I went through a bunch of photos I’ve taken of Su and/or Gao in the exhibit. Alas, I have a bunch of close-ups of the Stars, but neglected to photograph the trees.
Moderator’s note: I’ll find out.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Haha!
What a sweetie she is!
December 17th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
What a kick in the pants she is!! Wished I’d been there to see her antics!! Glad all is well.
December 17th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
How about a video of all that????
December 17th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I do not want to read any stories about Sulin, since that would make me even sadder in thought of her leaving for China. I’d rather erase all my memories about her. Sulin is very beautifull, I just cannot image what she would become when she was in China, She will become a breeding machine, like her sister HuaMei, HuaMei was made pregnant at 4 years old in fact, I think it is very harmful to Hua Mei’s health when her body has not developed so maturelly for that as such a young girl.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Thats so cute! She is soo cute and unique
December 17th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
I think I’d rather have Su Lin redecorate my house than Martha Stewart! It’d be a lot of fun watching Susie demolish everything in her path. I’m going to miss her when she goes to China.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
What fun the cub would have if he had another playmate….like they do in China.
I wish I had seen the tree go down……..lots of trees have gone down in the winds and rains we had….but most landed on cars…….didn’t expect a panda to bring one down too!
December 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
oh wow!!!!! lololol. great description! thanks for this. it was the next best thing to being there in person! SU LIN was my first experience watching the cub from birth and being able to help name her. i know all of you at the SDZ hear it all the time but THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LETTING US EXPERIENCE ALL OF THIS WITH YOU!!
December 17th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Thank you for such an endearing update about beautiful Su Lin. She is such a playful girl, an absolute joy to watch. Wish we could have seen her exciting day! Seeing her with the donut is always fun. I guess she decided to accessorize by wearing the donut as a bracelet! What will Su Lin do next? She redecorates! She accessorizes! Su Lin: the fashionista of the panda world!
December 17th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
Thank you, Chris, for a delightful narrative! What a treat to have been able to see all that activity by Su Lin, not to mention a collapsed tree and the need to trim it to prevent an escape! This young lady will be sorely missed when she has to leave for her parents’ homeland. But we’ll still have two cubs to follow, with both Zhen Zhen and Yun Zi entertaining us with their antics.
Thanks to all of you at the San Diego Zoo who care for these beloved animals — and all the other grand creatures at the Zoo and Wild Animal Park. You all do a terrific job and make it look easy, which I know it’s not!
December 17th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Did Su Lin sneak into the den and remove the bamboo for her redecorating?
Great to hear about Su Lin’s adventures. When she was a little cub she seemed pretty reserved and not that mischievous. And I remember some bloggers wondering if she was strong enough, especially because her cousin Tai Shan was always quite a bit larger than her. But Su was one smart cub, and look how strong and determined she is now. Even though I hate to see her leave SDZ, I think that her energetic personality indicates she’s ready for a big adventure in Panda Home.
December 17th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
To DoxieMom….thank for providing the great videos and photos and commentary! Greatly appreciated!
December 17th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
What a great story about Su Lin. I was fortunate enough to see her a few years ago at the zoo. She was a wild child, she tore a branch off a tree and decided to do summersaults and just be very entertaining, I was trying to get my camera ready and realized the batteries were out!! I had to run out and get my husband with his camera and by the time he came in, she was done with her entertaining for the day. What a gorgeous girl and very entertaining. Sad that she has to go to China. Is Miss ZZ paying attention to what older sister is up to??
December 17th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
PandaFan2 Hey I might have a neighbor that loves Disneyland like me, and the ZOO. My own apartment is boring. Now I notice Panda’s everyplace more than I ever did before. My first bear when I was a little girl was a huge Panda. It must have been trashed by my mother, but some of us keep our childhood toys in the cedar chest or in a case, but I will always remember my first stuffed bear, a PANDA !
December 17th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Well I am off to the Big “D” since the block out days are coming, and since I am miles from the Big “SDZ”, I will wait until our baby Chubbie Cubbie can come out, I bet by the way he is like dizzy alot it will be next month.
December 17th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
It’s almost midnight EST and Bai is in th den rolling around and then she brought in Yunior for feet roll LOL. It looks like the den has been cleaned out of all the old bamboo down to the bare floor.
December 17th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
#34, Bruce–Now you’ve done it! It’s time for me to go to bed, but I keep hearing “Surfing USA”!
#37, Pam–RoxandaBear has some great photos & video of Tai–my absolute favorite is Tai catching snowflakes, which is here– http://www.flickr.com/photos/roxandabear/3209498289/. She also has one of Mei Xiang belly-toboggoning down the snowy hill!
I’ve said good night to Yun Zi, Lin Ping, & Tai Shan. They’re all asleep as I should be. Now, if I could just quit humming!
December 17th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Oh, what fun Su Lin and everyone had today! I love the thought of pandas ‘tree surfing’! Thank you, Chris, for sharing this delightful scene!
And DoxieMom….I have been wanting to thank you for a long time for all the wonderful videos you have shared with all of us panda fans. Now that I have been banned at work from watching the SDZ Panda Cam (drat!), I rely on your videos to catch up on the pandas’ daily antics!
SDZ – You guys ROCK!!!! I hope you all know how much joy, smiles, laughter and love you bring to all of us who have followed the lives of this dear, precious panda family.
And thank you to all you panda fans….I have been reading these SDZ panda blogs for a few years now, and I have so enjoyed ‘getting to know’ you all (as only one can do on the internet!)….I so wished I could have been amongst those of you who were fortunate to be there at SDZ for Yun Zi’s naming day. Count me in as a panda fan to the extreme!
December 17th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
It’s almost 2:30 am here on the East Coast and I’m trying to turn the computer off and go to bed, but there are pandas playing, and I can’t stop watching!
December 17th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
Can someone give the websites of other pandas? Are their any in China that have cams?
Thanks….
December 18th, 2009 at 12:18 am
Su Lin was obviously doing her festive tidying up and getting ready for Christmas. Is there any video footage of this pleaseeeeee?????????????????????
December 18th, 2009 at 1:00 am
Su Lin is definitely a little bit of something very cute. Fantastic.
December 18th, 2009 at 2:48 am
My, my! The whole tree? Maybe someone should forewarn China about her redecorating schemes! Must have been a lot of wide-eyed gasps and “oh”s from the visitors. What a gal! I hope they have enough trees for her in China. I’m so glad she was not injured, the little scamp! If there were any visitors with cams recording this, please share with us?
If any Tai Shan fans want a last chance to get Tai Shan souvenirs, you should log on to the FONZ shop at the web site. They are offering ‘all things Tai Shan’, most on sale, as a farewell. I loaded up tonight, as I’m having a bout of insomnia.
Hope everyone has a safe weekend, out there doing your last minute shopping. Got mine finished today!
December 18th, 2009 at 4:53 am
What a great post! Thanks. Those girls!
At about 9pm SDZ time, I saw Bai Yun pawing and pawing at the floor of the den, much as out dogs do when the are trying to make a “nest” to snuggle down on. She gave up and took Yun Zi out of the den. Because there was no bamboo? Is she not bringing more in, or is it being removed, as others asked, to suggest the denning time is over. From what I have read here, it seems the zoo doesn’t ever interfere with her decisions about these things, but are the keepers nudging her a bit?
December 18th, 2009 at 5:24 am
Hi everyone,
I’d like to know if somebody find Su Lin’s redecorating video.
Tks,
December 18th, 2009 at 6:16 am
What a girl!! Sounds like she was having a great time. I would have loved to have seen her walking around with the donut. We will all miss her when she leaves but I am confident she will makes us proud and become a valuable part of the breeding program much like her half sister Hua Mei!
December 18th, 2009 at 6:55 am
I knew she was being very active yesterday. One minute she was walking around and the next, she was up the tree. She has redecorated her enclosure several times now. Once Mei Sheng left, she became my favorite. Now we can all see why
December 18th, 2009 at 8:50 am
I see that the den is bar?? I watched Yun Zi play this morning. Then he did everything he could to wake up mama, crawling on her while she was sleeping, (such a good mom). He looks like he’s going to be quite the entertainer.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Moderator: How long can pandas live for? Do pandas know how to swim?
Moderator’s note: For lifespan questions, visit our Panda Fact Sheet. And from a previous response from our Panda Team (see post Panda Ducklings?): Ancient China, in which the pandas evolved, had a lot less habitat fragmentation than it does today. As a result, the bears roamed into lowlands in the country and had more access to running water. So it remains a possibility that webbing was useful in crossing that water. We would have to look more closely at how pandas swim, and the prevalence of webbing across the whole panda population, in order to understand better. Neither has been done thus far.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:09 am
There must be something in the air. A couple of days ago Mei Lan at ZA was going nuts and acting goofy. The would run and tumble, jump from the logs into the fire house swing and kept going for a long time. Figured she was just acting goofy like her papa Yang, but if Su Lin was up to the same type of antics, who knows. I think China is in for a couple of wild girls and one super tuff boy in 2010.
I am so thankful that China and Zoo Atlanta has given me the opportunity to view a live panda bear and for all of the zoos for their Panda Cams. I can never forget, nor would I want to, these fantastic bears.
May 2010 bring us all some good fortune – especially a few female pandas here in the states – hoping to have a cub in 2010.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:19 am
Hmmm. The den is re-softened with bamboo. I missed the decorating phase, but Yun Zi is snuggled up looking very comfy. It’s probably warm and lovely in San Diego, another reason to wish I were there! Here in NY it’s 25 degrees. And that’s probably warm for some of you other bloggers.
December 18th, 2009 at 9:54 am
DD #2 and #57: Thank You so very much for giving the links to Tai playing in/on/up/under the trees and the catching of the snowflakes!!! What a TREAT!!!
December 18th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Janan #60–look at the pandasliveon Web site–there is a listing and links to other cams.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Goodmorning, thank you Moderator for the link. You gave me the information I was looking for, and a lot to think about. We have a little zoo in our area that takes in wild animals that people have not been able to keep for one reason or another. I might volunteer there in the future and see what it is I would want to do. Maybe I would want to be a veterinrian. Thank you so much for the information. You made my research easy. Thank you.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:37 am
#40 Bobbie
The tree was on the right side of Su Lin’s exhibit near the front. It is on the right relative to the pool, if you are standing in the queue.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:48 am
#57 dd: thanks for the link to Tai… Those are some HUGE snowflakes. Where is the video for Mei Xiang? I’m just starting to get to know the other pandas in the US… I’m a panda newbie…. Bai and Yunior are my “firsts”…Thanks to everyone sharing video links…
December 18th, 2009 at 11:31 am
Thanks for the details on the latest ‘Decorating Diva’ series! Go Su Lin! I’m just wondering if SDZ will be reducing the arborist staff after she leaves? They sure won’t have as much work… unless ZZ steps into big sister’s paws and takes over redecorating! Now that I think about it, Mei Sheng used to give them lots of work too, especially after overnight rains/tree romps! Another family trait?
Has ZZ shown any inclinations to ‘redecorate’? Or is she just working on her humming for the upcoming holiday caroling?

Gosh, the visitors really were Up Close to the action!!!

#71 Page, you got that right. The radio guys made a big deal out of it being “twice as warm as it was yesterday morning” in other words it was 6 instead of 3. Of course that doesn’t take into account the wind. Yesterday we had negative 20 wind chill. Last night in the northern part of Maine (where I live) it got to -30. I though Minnesota was cold!!! My parents used to let us go out to play when the temp reached 0.
I miss the warm. Why oh Why did I ever let my husband convince me to move to his home state of Maine.
Su Lin certainly sounds like she was having a blast. I am sure Zhen Zhen will do what she can to make up for Su Lin’s leaving.

ZA has renogiated it’s “panda lease” & will pay China $570,000 yearly during the next five years, compared to the $1.1 million that it paid annually over the last decade. Also a “cub tax”, in which the zoo paid the Chinese one-time fees of $310,000 upon the birth of Mei Lan and Xi Lan, will no longer be charged if parents Lun Lun and Yang Yang produce additional offspring. So Daddy Yang & Mommy Lun Lun will remain for 5 more years at least
Now we wait for the NZ talks to begin

Want panda cams? Google “Daniel’s Panda Cam.” He has five cams, National Zoo has 2 cams, ZooAtlanta (when it’s on), Memphis, and San Diego, all on one page for you! It’s a great resource.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Based on the Panda Cam, we can see where Su Lin got her decorating flair from as Bai Yun brought in a whole bunch of boo today. Yun Zi is happily rolling around, chomping on them. One time Bai set up some bamboo at such an angle I thought she wanted her own Christmas tree. When she was doing this, there seemed to be a big smile on her face, she is a real lady of the manor.
Another spunky girl is Lin Ping in Chiang Mai Zoo. She will not be denied and has tonnes of energy.
Britney – Maybe Yun Zi’s laid back scheme to get the girls comes for Papa Gao Gao who seems like a mellow fellow.
Moderator – Just a holiday question or two, who looks after the animals when it is a holiday like Christmas? Do the animals get Christmas treats? Does the zoo remain open at Christmas?
And to all Giant Panda Fans, I think it is all of you, Doxie Mom and all, who make this such a vibrant and lively community. I would love for us to really set a date in 2010 or 2011 to rendezvous at the Panda enclosure at SDZ and surprise Yun Zi.
Merry Christmas and a Joyful Panda filled New Year to all Panda Fans and staff at SDZ from sunny Singapore!
Lucilla
Moderator’s note: The Zoo is open every day of the year, including all holidays. That means our wonderful keeper staff is there, too. Perhaps they will provide a holiday treat for their charges.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
I will be very sad to see Su Lin go to China. She is a special gal. But I also want to ask why Yun Zi is still not “out of the den,” so to speak. Actually, I have seen him both leave and crawl back into the den several times on his own, so he is clearly ready for the “big world” out there. Who can forget, thanks to Doxiemom, the flip he did off the raised platform? He is a tough guy. All of the previous cubs were out before Christmas, and with Yun Zi apparently being so healthy and possibly the most fiesty of the five, I am truly puzzled by the decision to keep him so sheltered.
Moderator’s note: Please trust our Panda Team to make the decision that is best for Yun Zi.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I watched the video where Mei Lan was sliding down the snowy Hill, wow she was having fun. Then she had snow all over her eyes. A whille ago Yun Zi was looking like he was dancing. Oh the funny things Yun Zi does. Here is a story about Yun Zi and Bai Yun.
Bai Yun
Yun Zi
Yun Zi: da da dancing hey mom look i am dancing!
Bai Yun: oh yeah that’s lovely. (eating boo)
Yun Zi: la da da hey mom i am singing!
Bai Yun: Yes that fine. Better than you taking my bamboo.
Yun Zi: hey mom i am coming!
Bai Yun:oH i said don’t take my bamboo. Not take my bamboo!
Yun Zi: i am hurrying!! I am going to poke you and take your bamboo!
Bai Yun: (runs and hides) ahhh i got to go!!
Yun Zi: :p yes i finally got to take her bamboo! Yes yes i got your boo! Come back!!
December 18th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Yun Zi is really having fun playing with his reflection in the den. All the cubs have done this, but he seems to be taking it to the next level.
December 18th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Oh our little guy is LAZY. That’s all I’m saying
December 18th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I was thinking of Yun Zi today and thought that if the panda team would put briefly, a fluffy Santa hat on him for next week’s exam……I bet that one photo would go around the world for publicity! He would be adorable if it flopped down near one eye.
I would definitely save that photo and it would set him apart from all the other pandas out there! Anything to capture the news and get more tourists to San Diego!
Would be a superb holiday photo of Mr. Santa Claus!!!
December 18th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Just watched the time lapse and I see he didn’t bother to go out in our great weather.
He just played with bamboo when awake. I can see why it was cleaned out for awhile.
I don’t like it cleaned out….prefer the bamboo flooring.

#60 Janan Huntsberry : One good multiple Pandacam site is Daniel’s if you search dreidel/pandacams/index.html you will find that he has all the US Panda Cams on one page as well as links to other World Panda Cams…..I use this as you are hit with a Pandaholics dream of Pandacam overload at once….Atlanta Zoo is only available M-F 10:00AM until 5:00PM and Memphis has been having outage problems with their cam…..Another good site is Pandas Live On: http://www.pandasliveon.com/
Or Thailand’s New Panda site : http://truemusic.truelife.com/home/player/player_livetv.php?guid=54#
I hope this helps you with your case of Pandaholicism as it is a great addiction to have….
To all of our Friends at the SDZ and GPF Family & Friends,Lynn is still in a Twilight Induced Medical Sleep and I don’t think she will be home for Christmas as she starts her second year in the Hospital as due to having been in bed fo a year she has developed blood clots in her leg from Deep Vein Thrombosis from being bed ridden and is undergoing experimental treatment in Ithaca ,NY about 3 1/2 hours drive away from me….She hasn’t been able to hear all of your get well wishes and prayers or the antics of her adopted family the Gao Gao / Bai Yun Clan at the SDZ including her two favorite sisters Lin Lin and ZZ Top the Humming Panda,as well as Yun Zi ( Yun Yun/ Yunior)Maybe for new years Eve I hope to have better news….

dd, you just provided me a very special smile! Tai, my first baby boy! (Thank you for the links, dd.) He will have a great time in China; don’t get me wrong, my heart is hurting knowing you will go be leaving. But you hve important work to do. You have been here much longer than expected. I, for one, am very grateful for that.
Ms. Su…..my screensaver. How silly you remain. You tug at my heart just being you. You are precious. I voted on your name, I’m proud to say. You will be loved in China, as you are here. My heart hurts for you, too. You will always be my screensaver no matter what great things you accomplish in China. You will always be in my heart.
Thank you for the charming update of our girl.

#85 – panda lover – for some reason Bai is not ready to take Yun Zi completely out of the den – who knows why
Several think this may her last cub & she wants the extra snuggle time-( but with Bai & superstud Gao she may surprise us with another miracle cub in 2011
) On the other hand Bai is sure being rough with her guy & teaching him – the zoos need many more years of study of how & why momma pandas raise their cubs

I have something to say about our pandas going back to China. While it truly hurts my heart to have any of them go to China, I know they will be well taken care of in China. Do you all remember the earthquake? Do you remember the keepers risking their own lives to save the toddlers? Do you remember reading the updates, especially from Pandas International from Susan after she arrived in China? They put the pandas before their own lives. The keepers and everyone there are so dedicated to the pandas. Do remember the memorial for Mao? How his keeper was absolutely torn apart? They love these animals! They are doing everything possible to keep the pandas from becoming extinct. Pandas home land is not the United States…….as Pamela G. has so eloquently stated it in her peoms. Maybe we don’t understand their methods in perserving this precious species, but they are doing their best. Everyone involved with them, love and are dedicated to these animals.
Please excuse any typos…….I do most of my posts without wearing my contacts.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
To all panda lovers and others…just enjoy…”Thank you” to the wonderful SDZ staff…”Thank you” to all the bloggers who share their love, best wishes and concerns for pandas, elephants and other inhabitants of this planet… I hope you all take a little bit of “tis the season” and sprinkle it throughout the rest of the year.
December 18th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
I thought someone told me that the new loan for the pandas included keeping our girls for a longer period of time since the earthquake destroyed their intended home. Is this true or are they going to ship Su Lin out soon?
Moderator’s note: Our renewed loan agreement states we keep Bai Yun and Gao Gao for another five years (four now, since the agreement was signed last December). We are waiting for China to tell us where and when Su Lin will be moving.

#96 Linda I agree with everything you are saying. While we may love the pandas that are here, it is nothing compared to the Chinese. They will do anything for these bears. Just do a search of Wolong on You Tube and see how great they are with the pandas. As much as I may miss the bears, the Chinese will do everything right for Su Lin and Tai. We could never honor the bears here the way the will be honored in China. Thank you SDZ for giving us a chance to see into the animals lives. You have touched each of us. And I, for one, am grateful for any chance I have to continue to learn from these wonderful bears.
December 19th, 2009 at 4:16 am
Keepers…please pack up Yun Zi and send him next day air to Richmond, Va. We have some great enrichment falling from the sky in the form of snow. I promise I will get him back to you safe and sound.
December 19th, 2009 at 4:56 am
Tai, Mei and Tian have lots of snow. I just hope the zoo staff is able to get in safely. Mei and Tian are just like little cubbies in the snow, and Tai like to get his own boo from the boo that gets weighted down over the fence. I bet Susie Q could do a lot of redecorating in 5 inches of snow.
December 19th, 2009 at 5:00 am
YUK!!! Missed Su Lin’s antics! Was out on that day doing some things and didn’t get on the pandacam until later on. Su is a very funny bear to watch; I’ve seen some of her playfulness on the cam before, tho. Hope Doxiemom will be able to get a video up for us to see this!
Snow alert!! Washington, DC is getting a huge snowstorm today! It started late last nite, and they are expected to get almost TWO FEET of snow on the ground before it is all over with according to the Weather Channel! This snowfall will make the one they had 3 weeks ago look very tiny! This is the type of snowstorm that Tai Shan will just love to play in; enough snow on the ground for him to roll in, jump in, slide in, just to play in before he goes to China. He got his wish! The last time Tai Shan played in snow like this was back in 2006 when he was about 5-6 months old! Just checked the DC pandacams, and they are still showing the indoor cams, but I’m sure that they will be switching them to the outdoor cams when they let the pandas out for their snow fun. Will keep checking out those cams during the day. To all of the pandafans that live in New Engl;and states, have fun with this one! This is a huge wallop of a snowstorm! Even NYC will be getting a foot of snow! You guys could have a White Christmas in your areas!! Florida is just getting the cold air from this system!
Just checked the SDZ pandacam, Bai and Yuni are not in the den right now. Will keep checking back to the cam during the day.
Well, gonna go and check on the pandacams! Will be back later on!

Today the east coast is getting hammered with a major nor’easter snow storm…The NZ is showing the Red Pandas in the snow and hopefully we will see the Panda’s released outside to frolic in the 1 foot plus of snow….If you’be never been fortunate enough to see Panda’s Playing in the snow today is the perfect day to watch Yunior at SDZ and both NZ Panda Cams when Tai gets to play in the snow from Daniel’s Multi Panda Cam sute as you won’t be dissapointed as they frolic in the snow! …..

Sat,. 8:30am EST; got back on the NZ pandacams, and the pandas are outdoors, sitting on the snow, eating their breakfast boo. I also saw something on one of the pandacams that the NZ keepers don’t normally show on the pandacams—one of their red pandas wound up being on the cam for a couple of minutes climbing and playing on a snow covered tree! Loved that one! The red panda was a real cutie, too! This shot of the red panda was before they let Tai, Mei and Tian outdoors. Gonna check back on the cams later on to watch what they all do in this snow.

#96 Linda: Well said Linda. I recently watched a video from China on Fu Long – the little Vienna panda that just went home to China. I, like many people was sad to see him go but when I watched the preparations they made for him over there and how sooo many people turned up to welcome him home – you couldn’t help but be awed at how they were treating him – like Panda Royalty. And then they showed us his new area and when the keeper went outside it just took your breath away! It is so green and so lush over there and you could see mountains in the distance and you realized that this is going to be his view every single day – I just realized at that moment that that is where they belong.
The grounds are so large and they will have so much area to roam around in and they will have other pandas to socialize with. We can hardly begrudge them that can we? It’s what we all want for them, to someday be free to roam those mountains and over there – they are one step closer to achieving that!
December 19th, 2009 at 9:18 am
DC has very blizzard like conditions now, the kids were out early this morning but the keepers also brought them in around 11 or so (i’m checking in between shoveling). I think with the zoo closed and conditions so bad they may be in for the rest of the day so the staff can safely get all their work done and head for home early.
December 19th, 2009 at 9:19 am
#96 Linda A…You are so very right! We also can look back to the video of the attempts to return Gao Gao to the wild. You could see the absolute love that Gao’s keeper had for him. I have thought many times how hard it must be for them to say goodbye and let some of their pandas travel to foreign lands (the U.S., etc.) so that we can enjoy seeing them here (and other places in the world). It must have been very hard for them to part with Bai Yun and Shi Shi and later Gao Gao and all of the other pandas that have come here and delighted us. The fact that these pandas are so beloved is evidence that they have excelled at one of their primary roles: to raise awareness of the critical state of wildlife in the world. I’m very sad that we will soon be saying goodbye to three U.S.-born pandas and I had hoped that there would be a way for them to contribute to giant panda conservation here but I know they will have many more opportunities to breed successfully in China, the native land of the giant panda.

After reading all the comments, I’ve decided to go ahead and post the 1st video below to show how active a day YunYun had Thursday! After the exploration of the bedroom, Yun Zi was out in the classroom for a long time…this video condenses 1 hour and 20 minutes into 10 minutes! (Later in the afternoon, he again climbed on the platform/scale and the watercooler before he retreated to his newly refurbished (unfurnished?) den ~ this isn’t in the video.)

This 2nd one is from Saturday morning around 6AM. Yun Zi can’t decide whether to stay in the den and play with bamboo, or venture into the bedroom and see what mommie Bai is up to!

11:15am EST: Anybody seen the pandacam watching Yuni playing with some bamboo?? He looks like he’s trying to eat it, but I know that he’s only 4 months old and still has baby teeth! He’s not ready for the boo just yet! But, he was laying on his back playing with the boo doing what his mom does. He’s been watching her lately and learning from her! Very smart and intelligent little bear! I think he’ll start to eat bamboo at around 6-8 months old, right moderator? Let me know if I have that info correct, ok?
BYE!!!

The DC pandas enjoyed the heavy deep snowfall this morning at NZP. Surprised that they spent the afternoon inside, but since they are getting 2 feet plus they may be short on staff and want to be sure of the pandas safety so they brought them inside. The pandas have not been exposed to snow that deep in recent years. Usually DC only gets up to a foot in the city. Atlanta pandas probably had some too but they don’t like precipitation very much so my guess is they stayed inside. Mei Lan might have been adventurous enough to try it. Don’t know if Xi Lan is like Yang Yang or Lun Lun, but Yang won’t go outside at all if it is raining or snowing. Lun Lun will take some rain while she eats but prefers to be inside where it is nice and dry. It is a great way for Tai Shan and Mei Lan to get exposure to real snow before they get to China early next year and have much more in the Sichuan mountain winter weather. Su Lin is in for a nice surprise in her first winter in Sichuan. She will have even more enrichment opportunities for redecoration. How about a snow panda?
December 19th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
#85 Panda Lover, Bai Yun is the one who decides when Yun Zi is ready to leave the den, not the keepers. Let nature and Bai Yun’s instincts rule in his life as nature intends. Bai knows best. She obviously has reasons for letting him stay in the den as long as he wants and will bring him outside with her when he and she are ready. Humans don’t know everything, and the keepers pay very close attention to the signals Bai Yun gives them with each cub so they know what Bai and her cub’s next steps will be in the natural process of raising a cub. The keepers do NOT force Bai Yun to raise her cubs in an unnatural way. They do everything they can to make her environment as realist and natural as possible so she can do what her instincts to do at each stage of the maturation process. Patience is a must when watching a mother animal raise her young.

Another Saturday video has been posted!
Bai wakes up YunYun, and he goes out to the bedroom. 20 minutes later the camera switches to the bedroom where Yun Zi is playing with a piece of bamboo by the watercooler. While in the bedroom, he encounters mommie Bai a couple of times!

December 19th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Wish they would move the cam…..cub is just to the left of it and looks like he is trying to climb….
momma sure paces a lot..wonder what her issues are.
December 19th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Cub finally came back into view….headed towards sun room door, climbed up better than last week! Sat there and then fell back into the classroom with a bump.
Slowly moved down along the wall, tried to climb up, like he was looking for the opening but it was gone! Never looked to his left to see it was right where he left it…..moved along the base of the wall, snuggled down for another nap and then the cam got switched off to another location…..so guess he is napping now.
At least he can climb up a big step much better this week!

What so many of us forget as we bemoan the pandas returning to China is that we will not be left without pandas. Who’s to say Bai Yun won’t have another adorable baby that will win our hearts as does Yun Zi? We have come to grow and love these wonderful animals, and that doesn’t mean we won’t have others to bring into the panda family as well in the future. Yes, it’s true they won’t be on the panda cams from various zoos and places around the world- the cams we plug into every day. But there will be other pandas to get to know and love. And again, who’s to say that we won’t have the possibility of panda cams from China in the not-to-distant future?
Rather than being continuing to be selfish about what WE are losing, we should consider how much the panda is getting in return. These exchanges are helping tremendously to conserve the panda population, to study their habitats, their behaviors. None of this would be possible without the exchanges. Let’s look at the BIG picture folks, and what we gain from having these magnificent animals still on the planet, rather than extinct.

Dear Moderator,
Why does Zhen Zhen keep sitting and looking by the gate? I think it’s the “howdy gate”.

That is for the folks headed this way over the holiday weekend. Bring a jacket.

#109, Kathy, Canada – thanks for sharing the info about Fu Long in China. He is in Bifengxia, which is where Tai Shan will be going, and possibly Su Lin, unless the Chinese choose to send her to a different breeding facility.
December 19th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
#96 – Linda A. / NorCal – yes, Linda we all know our pandas are worshiped in China
But it doesn’t make it any easier when a US born cub returns to China. We all read about how wonderful Wolong was & how happy Mei Sheng would be there – off he went – then we found he “escaped” from his enclosure & got into a fight with another panda & was moved to another panda reserve. It’s just frustrating when the zoos pay $$millions in panda rental, plus “the cub tax” & other research fees & we end up with the short end of the deal

Hi, again!
Dennis, NJ; I hope that you are staying warm and dry either in your home in New Jersey or in Ithaca, NY with your wife. New Jersey is getting hit with the heavy snow right now. Keep watching the pandacams, ok? Still praying for your wife.
I also checked the Animal Planet website to see who won Hero of the Year. They announced their new 2009 Hero—Scott Lope, Director of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida; my home area! That was a surprise to me that he won, but he deserved it! He’s been in the big cat rescue job for over 10 years with the help of a small staff and volunteers. I was really hoping that Suzanne Braden and Pandas International would be the winners this year. The money would have helped them with the bamboo replanting, panda milk formulas, and other projects that they are doing right now. Maybe next year, Suzanne!
Been looking in on the SDZ pandacam off and on today, and Yuni was either sleeping, playing with boo, or playing with his hind feet! Just checked it a couple of minutes ago, and no one is in the den right now. Mom and son are out and about tonite!
Gonna go for now! Will check back later on!

OK, Panda Family……..I’m going crazy here…….No pandas at SDZ and Lin Ping TV isn’t working properly. AND the regular Thai cam won’t stay up for more than a couple of seconds at a time. I’ve been gone all day, and I need a panda fix.
Dennis, I wish I had some words of wisdom to make you feel better. But prayers will have to do.
I wish everyone would have had the opportunity to watch the three cams from Chengdu before they went black. It was so fun to watch the toddlers. It was heart-warming to watch their keepers taking care of them. Very special treatment for each one of them!
Oh, BBBAAII, and Yun Ziiiiii, come here! I need to see you.
December 19th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
All right, it is Saturday Night, and Yunnie is getting his bath….and a lively wrestle with mommy. What a wonderful. loving relationship. It is a wonderful thing to see. But it is 10:45 here in the Midwest, and it’s time for me to get to sleep. Another day tomorrow to watch the Panda cam….and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all of the Pandaholics…..

Dear Moderator,
I am new to the panda scene and have watched faithfully and been totally amazed at Bia Yun and what a wonderful mother she has been. But lately I have actually been concerned about how rough and unrelenting she seems to be at times with the little guy. Is this normal? Is she trying to stimulate or motivate him or something, or is she frustrated with him? Perhaps I am misreading what I am seeing since I am a new observer. Sorry, just feeling protective of the precious chubby cubby.
I really appreciate all the videos and the blog info. It has been a rewarding learning experience for me.
Moderator’s note: Welcome to the wonderful world of pandas! Bai Yun is behaving just as a panda mother should. Just relax and enjoy the view…

Does Yun Zi know how far he can go? Has his mom ever left him in the tunnel?
Moderator’s note: Yes. Sometimes he doesn’t want to go out to the exhibit, so Bai Yun will leave him there. It’s his choice to join her or return to the bedroom/den area.

hee hee, Moderator, you should add “bark” to that first fun fact! Certain panda cubs know how to bark! (Hint, hint, Yun Zi)
December 19th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Yes a whimper is one thing, but a “bark” so determind as to move his whole head and body is another ! Like his first word ! He said in that exam, Bark (Hey) You, thats my chubbie butt you are squeezin… bark bark Hey You !

Wow…We had a lot of snow in the East Coast the NZ got hammered 2 feet + and I hope the keepers got home safe and get back today to allow a snow play day today for Tai and Family….Daniels Multi Panda cam site will be fun to view today…..We only had 7 inches of snow in NW NJ and due to living in an Apartment Now after selling our house to pay Lynn’s medical Bills it’s a pleasure knowing all I have to do is clean off my car and hopefully finish the sorting and empty out of my garage so i can finally get my car inside for the next storm….Still no updates on Lynn other than last night she called in a lot of pain and discomfort crying that she’s had enough of the pain and wants to come home as she put it even to die in peace…She finally calmed down and went back to sleep as I calmed her down with the fact that she has the GPF Family and Friends sending their wishes and prayers,as well as Yunior to see on video and in person, and a few other noteable people asking about her and are concerned about her well being….I have a few job interviews on Monday and Tuesday, and will go to see her if only for a few minutes on Christmas Day if she is not getting released for the Holidays….
If Bai Yun looks under the weather today Blame it on Yun Zi (Yunior/Yun Yun) as Bai Yun had to use her Chinese Acrobat Skills again getting him up in he air and flipping Yunior around to fend off the attacks…LOL…She got him calmed down and again Yunior started the attack again at 3:45AM SDZ Time and I actually saw Yunior end up with a mouthful of Bai Yun’s Fur—OUCH!!!! Yunior then did his practice summersaults and ended up Ninja Turtle Style on his back and played footsy with himself ,before assuming his Panda Lotus Buddha position to chew on some boo…LOL…

ZZ is having a wonderful snack from her Christmas sack on top of the rocks. She looks just like a little kid who has opened a bag of candy and is tasting every piece. She appears to be beary proud of herself and thoroughly enjoying every bite. She has one piece in left paw and another in the right, and another leaning against her hip ready to be eaten. I sure hope DoxieMom is able to capture this for later viewing by those who didn’t get to see it live. It won’t be the same on the time lapse.
Phyllis, #122, maybe Zhen Zhen heard her sister remodeling and now she wants to see the results?

I personally would like that tree moved, but as long as Su is happy, we just have to live with that.

A 4th Saturday YouTube video has been posted
Saturday afternoon Yun Zi spent over 2 hours in the Classroom, climbing, exploring, and falling! A very active day for our little cubbie! I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a lazy Sunday

Between Yunior’s sounds at his exams and if only we had audio of ZZ Top humming think of the great christmas music that would rival the barking dogs or mewling cat versions of Jungle Bells……LOL…..Might be a good fund raiser for the SDZ as just look how many people have bought the cat and dog versions and would definitly buy the Panda version……If someone is handy out there you could possibly mix in the sound bites from the NZ and have a Holiday Hit on your hands…..LOL…..Loved the NZ Panda Snow games today only wished they stayed outside a little longer….At least we know the snow will be here for sometime now and there’s always tom’w……
I see Yunior just went on an outside expedition a few minutes ago……He is moving quickly when he gets his mind committed to go…..Anybody want to guess when we see him make his first tree climb? He is still the Panda Prince of Cuteness and you almost can get a cavity from watching him as he is so sweet….It’s also nice seeing ZZ Top play and assume the on the back Panda turtle position while eating her boo,she puts on a great ground show for her adoring Viewing Fans today as she hams it up for the Pandarazzi at the SDZ …Yunior is still out and about as shown by the empty den cam……Well he is outside in the sunroom and headed back into the bedroom and den followed by Bai Yun…Now the fountain is fun to climb and play with when mom goes outside as ge attempts to climb the scale again…I guess he is becoming more and more active and starting to give up his Night Owl Ways…..LOL……

Just got on the SDZ pandacam between 2:30 and 3pm EST to check in on Yuni, and I was watching ZZ doing her fast paced walkabout in her yard, and the cam people were trying real hard to keep up with her! Always nice to see ZZ whenever the cam people can catch her doing something interesting besides eating her boo! Also, checked in on the NZ pandacams this morning, and the pandas were out in the snow for awhile. Tai was walking around his yard making his deep snow trails all over the place. No jumping and rolling in the snow today, but this 16″ pile of snow will be around for the whole week thru Christmas. Tai, Mei, and Tian will have plenty of time to have their snow fun. Right now, all 3 bears are back inside eating or napping. NZ is still shut down today; just the keepers and vets are there to take care of the animals. In fact, all of DC is shut down because of the snow!
Well, gonna go and check in on the SDZ pandacam. Got to see what Yuni is up to next!

I just saw spectacular Su Lin retrieve her donut from the tree limb. She couldn’t quite unloop it from the limb so she stood up, grabbed a branch, pulled herself up and steadied her feet. She then knocked the donut from the limb, pulled herself higher so that her back legs and feet were on the branch, and climbed down the tree. What a sight to see! Su is so smart and strong, a panda problem solver in action! That was very neat to see.
I watched Yun Zi exploring earlier, standing against the water drinker. Zhen was pretty zippy motoring around her yard. Now Bai is in the classroom and Yun Zi looks like he’s rollling around in or near Bai’s bamboo.
So many great panda moments! I can’t wait until we can see Gao Gao again. I miss his sweet face! Has a date been set yet for his *7th* Anniversary celebration next month? It will be fun to honor him and see what creation the Forage Warehouse comes up with this year.
Moderator’s note: No date yet, but we’ll let everyone know.

Brenda #133 . about this stage of panda babyhood, MonsterMommie appears. I’ve seen it with all the babies. MonsterMommie gets attacked by baby, sometimes MonsterMommie smacks back a little bit. But rest assured, all good MonsterMommies (and Bai Yun is the BEST) know exactly how and where to land their little smacks. They do not injure the babes, even though it can look scary.

#128 – Maureen in Stanwood, MI, I feel just like you do about our US Pandas being sent to China. Although I know that China owns all of the pandas, it just seems so unfair. I have been thinking about Tai Shan…..He has such a large area to roam and is put inside every night….And precious Su Lin….How she loves to climb trees and is so playful….And Mei Lan…So playful and sweet. And then I think about sweet Zhen Zhen, Xi Lan and Yun Zi will be sent to China before long. These pandas have been such a comfort to me during some very depressing times in my life, and all of this news is even more depressing. I don’t want these beautiful, sweet pandas to become extinct, but it seems that there should be a more caring and thoughtful way to save them. Oh well, now that I’ve said my peace, I will always love these beautiful animals, no matter where they might be. Merry Christmas to all!!!
December 20th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I read where Yun Zi managed to climb up on the table all by himself! What an acomplishment for that chubby little body.
I just love viewing the DoxieMom’s videos…..since when ever I turn it on, he is sleeping.
I am not getting anything done around here….always checking the cub out!

2 Sunday YouTube videos have been posted for your viewing pleasure! It has been a very busy weekend in Panda Canyon
Sunday morning Yun Zi followed Bai everywhere she went! I didn’t see her carry him once, nor did the keepers appear to aid his transfer from one room to the next! I think after watching this, no one can doubt that Yun Zi has made great strides in the past week!!
The link for “Yun Zi’s Sunday Stroll” is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miaAyVd1o-Q
In the afternoon Bai and Yun Zi are in the classroom!! Simply adorable scene with Bai eating bamboo and Yun Zi sitting close by mouthing and playing with bamboo!!! Then they had a play scene that has me wondering how the keepers will be able to handle this ball of energy and teeth during the next exam!!

Wow, Yun Zi has had a great day exploring. Saw him investigating the water fountain outside the den and outside mouthing bamboo right along side of his mom, who was eating bamboo.
December 20th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I think the concern over Yun Zi was the choice of words Suzanne Hall used in her Dec. 14th blog -” And so we wait patiently for the “aha” moment, when Yun Zi decides it is time to tackle his world. Although he has spent some time outside the den, staff is unanimous in the conclusion that this little boy is moving ahead very slowly when compared to his siblings” Sadly, people read that & assumed there was something “wrong” with Yun Zi.
December 20th, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Did I notice that there is now new sod on the ground in the exhibits? Trying to prevent future muddy messes? Don’t the pandas discover it and want to pull it up?
December 20th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Here is a story about Yun Zi and Zhen Zhen and his Bai Yun.
Yun Zi steals his sister’s John Deer mobile, (it is a moterized vechile for kids or cubs)
Off Yun Zi goes over the hills, speeding along. He sees his mom quietly eating her bamboo. All of the sudden Yun Zi speeds towards his mom, going, “Mom look at me”. Bai Yun gets up and starts running as she is going, “Ah, Ah”. Yun Zi chases momma bear around the panda exhibit in Zhen Zhen’s zoom zoom mobile. Bai Yun yells “stop”, Yun Zi laughing doesn’t hear his mom (at least that is his story and he is sticking to it). Around and around they go. Zhen Zhen noticing all the racket chases Yun Zi, chasing momma bear in Zhen Zhen’s zoom zoom mobile. Soon, Su Lin was rolling on the ground laughing at the scene. What a hilarious family Yun Zi has. Dad, Gao Gao, missed all the action, but just wait till dad gets home!
One day, Zhen Zhen is sleeping taking a nap. Yun Zi sneaks over and takes Zhen Zhen’s zoom zoom mobile. (She made the mistake of leaving the keys in the car.)

It is 11:30 ESt and I am watching Bai get in some snuggling time with her baby. It is so cute. She is so patient as he bites her. She is trying to cuddle him and he just bites her. How sweet. She is the best mom and should get mother of the year! I cannot get enough of watching them. She woke him up so now she is paying the price. Does he really nurse up to 18 months? That seems so long. It amazes me with how big he is getting that she just still picks him up and cuddles him.
December 20th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Don’t miss the entry on the NZ under snow on the “Pandas Live On” website as well as pictures and videos of Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and a red panda enjoying the snow on jdbartross’ photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/26471449@N00/ taken on Saturday.
I checked the pandacam many times on Sunday but the pandas were always indoors. The Zoo was closed, with probably minimum staff, due to the snow storm. I hope that Monday there will still be enough snow and that we will see Tai Shan enjoying the snow as well. He better get prepare for what awaited him in China…
December 20th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
It seems that Su Lin heard the keepers saying that Yun Zi was running the show and decided that since she is about to leave for China, she should be the star and is deserving of more attention. Obviously her effort at redecorating her exhibit sends a message to the arborist and other authorities, since new grass can be seen in the exhibits. Way to go Su Lin, take the initiative and let people know that it is time to redecorate!!
December 20th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Since I had looked at the weight of all the US cubs, I decided to look at Lin Ping weight progress since a lot of information about her very frequent check-ups is available. I was really surprised by the results. She wasn’t weight at 132 days but she weight 9.5 kg at 130 days and 10.140 kg at 134 days. Yun Zi weight 8.2 kg at 132 days. Lin Ping weight 16.8 kg at 200 days, which is off chart on the SDZ cubs chart provided by the keepers, it goes only up to 15 kg and Hua Mei, the heaviest cub weight “only” about 12.7 kg at 200 days… I tried to find some information about Lin Ping parents’ weight, without success, but since the father of her mother, Lin Hui, was Pan Pan and he is considered a big panda bear, I suspect that at least her mother is a big momma panda bear. Lin Hui’s mother is Tang Tang. Ling Ping Grandparents on her father’s side, Chuang Chuang, are Grandma Bai Xue and Grandpa Xing Xing. (if the information I found is correct). If anybody knows where to find the weight of Lin Ping parents, I would be grateful if you would let me know. I did not find any “meet the pandas” page on the zoo’s website.

And thanks, Britney, for the story.

4:45AM NZ Time : All the Pandas are out of camera range but I can tell it’s not the night before Christmas as a creature was stirring on camera 18 a mouse (more like a Rat) ….. While Tai’s area has the Alfred Hitchcock Thriller ” The Birds” LOL……Memphis Cam no Pandas,AZ not online for another 5 hours and 15 minutes….Ahhhh…..Bai Yun and Yun Zi were sleeping nose to tail looking like a living Ying Yang Sign when I guess Bai Yun decided to enjoy the Temporary Panda Peace and went out to eat….. Now have “Sleeping Beauty” the Panda Prince dreaming of todays events…….
Lynn finally slept Peacefully and I’m waiting to have a telephone conference call with her Doctor’s as I’m still concerned with how depressed she is over starting year two the day after Christmas in a Hospital Bed , as December 26th. starts year number two of being away from our Mirror Twin Daughters whose jobs have them in Europe and me,3 1/2 hour drive away…..All I want for Christmas is Lynn,Kendall & Tiffany together in one location as I miss the comfort of the three Loves of my life……Maybe I can Convince her Doctors that it would help to move her back to the NJ,NYC Metro area so I can visit every day….At least I still have Daniel’s Multi Panda Cam web site to comfort me and the Get Well Wishes and prayers of the GPF Family and Friends and the SDZ Staff to get thru a lonely Holiday Season…..I also enjoy the popup window of the SDZ PandaCam that I found that allows me to watch Yunior as I type out this blog …..Try searching Pandacam SDZ Swag Popup for information on installing this as it also includes 3 other cams Polar Bear,Elephant , and Ape SDZ Cams….If I can’t sleep at least I have my Black & White Furry Friends to relax me…..Yun Zi (Yunior/Yun Yun) almost looks Angelic with a Halo around him as he dreams of what Deviltry he will try later today….LOL……Ahhhhh,Loving Mom Supreme Bai Yun has returned and is snuggled up with the sleeping Panda Prince………..
A very Happy Holiday Season to all of the SDZ and their Families and the GPF (Global Pandaholic Fans) Family & Friends …Whether you Celebrate Christmas,Hanukkah,Kwanza ,or any other HOLIDAY may it be Healthy and safe and Have a Happy New Year as well…And lets not forget our Troops away from home and Family ,where ever they are located , without their Sacrifices none of our Freedoms would be available to enjoy…..

Ah, early morning and Bai & Yuni are snuggled together asleep in the den. Haven’t seen that for awhile. Bai does ALL the right things, and this little(?) boy feels loved.
December 21st, 2009 at 7:35 am
Jeslyn, some panda fans donated sod for enrichment in the exhibits in the Spring. Maybe Santa brought more as part of the redecorating getting ready for Yun Zi’s appearance in a few weeks.
#143, Melissa, the stories I have heard about Su Lin lately tell me that she was closely observing her big brother Mei Sheng when they spent time up in the trees at the same time in different exhibits. Her antics sound more and more like some of his. I haven’t read anything about Su and Zhen doing any communicating in the tree tops. Since they are no longer encountering each other at the Howdy Gate, other than what one observant fan noted late last week about Zhen looking at the Howdy Gate, they don’t seem to have had any interaction for a couple of months.
December 21st, 2009 at 8:25 am
#151 Love the story. But baby boy is safe and sound now taking a long nap after his big escapade. If he lived in Tai-land we wouldn’t be able to find him with all the snow, and he might just decide to stay in the den til spring. Neither myself nor mommie is anxious for him to abandon the den altogether yet, but I can understand the folks in the area being on pins and needles waiting for his debut.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:06 am
#147 DoxieMom — You are right — Yun Zi’s Sunday Play is simply adorable. He is more than ready for his public debut. And his adoring public is anxiously awaiting that event.
December 21st, 2009 at 9:37 am
#160 Margaret…I wish I could have seen Mei Sheng in action! It was so much fun watching Su Lin yesterday. I found myself smiling as I watched and felt so proud of her! She is a dazzler! I am always amazed when I see a panda grab a branch and pull himself or herself up (like a pull-up), and they make it look so effortless! They really are powerful, strong creatures underneath all of the fluffy fur and “roly-polyness.”
December 21st, 2009 at 10:12 am
I know that this is a little early, but I would like to wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2010 to all the pandas, moderators, staff and bloggers. Also, I would like to invite one and all to see what a beautiful city I live in when the Winter Olympics are here in February.

The British newspaper The Daily Express has digitized its archives. A news story about this included a somewhat startling panda item. It must have been a baby panda. I wonder what happened to it in later life? Search for the story (from May 2, 1939), “Air Liner Pilots Attacked By Giant Panda.”
December 21st, 2009 at 11:32 am
The Daily Express story got me looking for that panda. I haven’t found it, but bloggers might enjoy this story about another Su Lin. It comes from a 1936 issue of Time Magazine. Search for Animals: Su-lin In
The story does not have a very happy ending. Su-Lin was purchased by the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and was the first panda to be exhibited in the US. Evidently, when they named Su-Lin, neither Mrs. Harkness nor the zoo was aware that Su-Lin was actually a boy. According to Time, that fact was not discovered until his autopsy. In 1938, Mrs. Harkness brought the zoo Mei-Mei. They fought and were separated. Shortly thereafter, Su-Lin died from a throat infection (or, in another report, pneumonia) caused by choking on an oak twig, which the zoo had been experimenting with adding to her diet. Maybe bamboo was hard to find? 40,000 people showed up the first day Mei-Mei went on exhibit, some with stepladders. Mei-Mei survived only until 1942. A third panda brought to Chicago from China by Mrs. Harkness, Mei-Lan, lived into the 1950s.
December 21st, 2009 at 11:51 am
Are my eyes deceiving me or is that Yun Zi out and about in the class room all by himself with out mama. Does this mean he’s ready for his big Christmas debut. He seems to be exploring every area of the exhibit.
December 21st, 2009 at 11:54 am
If anyone sees the NZ pandas frolicking in the snow in DC, please post. I can’t see them from work, the pandacam is blocked (but mysteriously I can see all their other webcams). I see they were inside all weekend, probably the best for them & the zoo staff. But I know they would really enjoy the snow, so here’s hoping they get some fun time that we all can enjoy. Also please post any youtube video of snow play, so I can watch later from home. Thanks to all my faithful pandaholics.
It’s balmy here in Texas today, 60° and no coat required. Glad I no longer live in the snow belt. (Just the tornado belt, LOL)
December 21st, 2009 at 12:20 pm
I am enjoying the Yun Zi Show. I was watching Yun Zi climb tree branches. He is so cute hanging off the tree like a monkey. I think Yun Zi is part panda and part monkey- ALL BOY.
December 21st, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Page #165–the article said the panda weighed about 70 lbs. and belonged to a missionary in China. Apparently, it broke out of its box in flight.
All of that goes to show how important the modern preparations for panda transport are. Who knows if the plane was even pressurized in 1939, how big the box was, etc. etc.
Bai and Yun Zi outside playing now–my heart is filled with joy at the sight!
December 21st, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Wow,as I predicted Yunior was off of the ground in a climbing structure….I just got home and saw him up the climbing structure before Mommy Dearest Bai Yun grabbed him down and proceeded with another play bout….He is growing fast and I don’t ever believe he was behind the growth curve but on a different time zone until this weekend when he cut back on his nocturnal activities and decided to go out and explore on his own….LOL….. Now he is sitting on a branch trying to climb it back onto the climbing structure on Camera 27,while SuperMom looks on eating her boo….DoxieMom , I hope you got Yun Zi’s first climb available as it’s now 12:35PM SDZ Time….On Camera 28 Yunior just did an impression of the poster of a kitten hanging from a branch “Hang in There”,what a great poster he would make…..Yunior now is climbing a sapling at 12:46PM SDZ Time just out of Camera view but you see him imitating his big sisters with their tree bounce routine….He will be a real hand full for Kathy and the keepers at his next exam ….LOL

# 168 Sharon in Fort Worth, please read my entry # 153. This morning and early afternoon two pandas were outside but I couldn’t say which pandas it was. I suspect they had reduced personnel as the pandacams were not following the pandas as it is usually the case at the NZ. But the pandas were just walking calmly around in the sort of walking paths created in the snow, not in the deep snow. No snow angels today. I suspect that either Tai Shan was not outside or he was not on the pandacams because none of the pandas were running around or climbing in the trees…

I love Su Lin’s flair for decorating, it’s something we share. I hope she has many places to redesign in her new home and I hope the Chinese are ready for it if the enclosure is not up to her discriminating design sense.
Any news on a date she is going to begin her biggest adventure yet???
Until then, I am thrilled for any news on her. Thanks for sharing!

Just loved all the videos and photos on the blogs…….made me laugh when he tumbled but Momma sure is Miss Piggy…pusing him away from treats he can’t even eat yet.
I am happy that he now has confidence to go out and play and learn what he is missing if he stays in the den.
He moves nicely now and faster. I am sure lots more tumbles are in store for him but he seems to bounce right back now that he knows what is happening.

Zhen Zhen’s yard (Cam #5) looks like it has had new grass/turf put down. Or maybe the result of the rain you had recently. Anyways it looks so nice and green now. Maybe she is hosting the Panda Claws party this year?

Monday Yun Zi You Tube video just posted
Bai Yun and Yun Zi engage in another precious play session out in the Classroom. Most of the footage comes from camera 29 which is black and white. Also, I think I spotted the little black and white hammock hung on the climbing structure! You’ll see this at the beginning of the video!

(In Gao Gao’s yard)
Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
Gao Gao: Hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: Hey, what’s with the catalog again?
G: Yun Zi is ordering a magnifying glass.
T: A magnifying glass?
G: And some night vision lenses.
T: Huh?
G: In order to supplement his eyesight.
T: Huh?
G: He’s into detective work.
T: Detective work?
G: He likes to explore.
T: Oh, that’s right.
G: He already has the innate panda Global Positioning System.
T: Yeah, I understand it’s pretty sharp.
G: And he has this great Flehman action.
T: Yes, great sense of smell.
G: He knows about Hua Mei, Mei Sheng, Su Lin, Zhen Zhen…
T: That’s right, they’ve been nurtured in the den.
G: And he knew about Zhen’s reindeer antlers.
T: He ordered that, too.
G: Yep, for Christmas.
T: That’s neat.
G: And Colombo’s crumpled trench coat.

I disagree with some of the comments about the pandas being returned to China. I feel so privileged to have the pandas in the US. I am grateful to China for being kind to let zoos in the US borrow the pandas. I think money spent is well worth it to have the pandas here. America has its assets and China has its assets. I don’t begrudge the Chinese for having their assets. I think it is good that China and America get along. China, as an ally and a friend is a good thing. It is good for America to have friends in the world. The Chinese are nice people and good friends. Even though I miss Mei Sheng, I think he is happy in his trees whether in the US or in China. He is getting to do what life does, have some Mei Sheng cubs. I am happy for Mei Sheng. I pray for Mei Sheng everyday. I know he is in China being the panda he was born to be. I know Mei Sheng is happy and safe in China.

DoxieMom, Yun Zi is telling you “I’m a big boy, now!” in your last video. Thank you.

#172 Danielle…Tai and Tian were on the cams this morning at 8AM EST. They tend to head straight for their bamboo to eat before they play in the snow, although I don’t know if any of the three NZ pandas did much playing. The cams haven’t been manned much so the pandas are off-camera a lot of the time. NZ was closed Sunday and Monday so there won’t be any photos from the intrepid and dedicated NZ panda photographers to document those two snow days.
I’m very glad that jdbartoss posted photos from Saturday on flickr though!

#176 – Doxie Mom – thanks so much for proving what most of us knew – there is nothing “wrong” with Yun Zi – he is coming right along in his own way –
Yun & Bai decided on his pace for when he would be comfy being on exhibit. And the terror stage (trying to climb & falling, after mom All the time, playing by himself) seems to be right on target

Dear Santa Paws: I have tried to be good, but could you please give any presents that might have my name on them to DoxieMom? With her video wizardry, I can catch up on YunZi and Mommy Bai without having to risk my job! Thanks, Santa.

Hi Panda Family,
I think I did this already but it said I made an error. So just in case, let me take this moment to make sure I wish all of you a Blessed Christmas, wonderful Hanukkah, or beautiful holiday of whatever kind you celebrate. May 2010 be a year of health, wealth, and happy blessings for all of us, our loved ones, and of course all the animals, especially our beautiful pandas!
Love and blessings to all!!!

May I volunteer to come down to SD and be the Meerkat at night so none of us miss a moment of that cute boy?
December 21st, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Another day of progress for the young one, leaving the den to explore outside and even climbing! He still likes to nap in the den, but at this rate it won’t be long till he and his mom are out front.
December 21st, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Thank you, P Wong, for making me laugh out loud as usual!
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:19 am
There is something very peaceful and calming watching Bai (such a good mom) and Prince Charming snuggled up together in the early morning…..

Nonpanda comment: Today is Colo’s birthday at the Columbus Zoo. She is the 1st gorilla born in a zoo and she is 53 today. She is going to have a birthday party with all kinds of goodies…She looks pretty good for being 53!!

Thank you, Chris, for a wonderful story of Su Lin. She was my first panda to watch on the panda cam and will always have a special place in my heart. It hurts to know that she soon will have to depart for China like “my” Fu Long. I am, however, relieved to know that he seems to have adjusted quite well, according to Vienna Zoo.
May I take this opportunity of wishing everybody at SDZ and the “Global Panda Family” a wonderful panda festive season and all the best for 2010, particularly good health! All the best from Ruth

I guess Bai Yun has figured a way out of the constant attacks of Yun Zi (Yunior/Yun Yun) by sleeping in front of the den’s opening…..At least yunior still senses her presence yet ,she can get her rest for as Yunior becomes more and more mobile during daylight hours and gets himself acclimated to the fact that night time is for sleep….LOL…..Can’t wait to watch Yunior do the worm the next time Kathy or another SDZ employee picks him up for his next exam as Yunior becomes a little ankle biter…..
I only hope that the NZ is open again today and Panda Cam operators are available so that we can see more of the Snow Play as they are predicting warmer temperatures and rain towards the end of the week…… Having traveled thru that region in the past for business I realize that snow cripples the region for up to a week as people just abandon their cars on the Highways and Beltways around Washington DC, that have never experienced snow before ,and this can make travel virtually impossible by road until the cars are cleared so that the limited number of snow removal equipment can clear the roads…..
Oh well,I see Yunior is up again at 4:28AM SDZ Time and has attacked Mommy Dearest on the den’s doorway…He is now in the process of trying to climb up and over Bai Yun’s head as all I see is the rear end of Yunior on Bai’s head….LOL….I guess by now Bai Yun is used to taking Cat Naps whenever she can as Yunior picks up his frantic pace of being more and more active…I guess he has gotten his Paws wet with tree climbing as seen on the Panda Cam yesterday and the SDZ Arborists must be planning out their tree shields and guards getting ready for Yuniors Public Debut, which looks very likely to occur before the New Year….Bai Yun had enough of the attacks and is nursing and is now cleaning Yunior at 4:35AM SDZ time, and then as Yunior settled down to rolling and a tumbling left the den again……Bai Yun then realized at 4:41AM SDZ Time ,that she has to back into the den to protect her head from the attacks of Yunior….LOL…..

Momma/Cubbie snuggle/play time going on in the den right now. Just signed on at work and caught f few minutes of it. Bai on her back and Yun Zi on top of her… too cute.
December 22nd, 2009 at 6:36 am
Hope there will be an exam today and a new video ! We all look so forward to those.
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:38 am
Kudos, P Wong! Wonderfully entertaining. I could picture every line.
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:06 am
P. Wong, thanks for another great chuckle! Well done!
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:11 am
I was just looking at the pandas at the DC Zoo good thing they are black and white because you would never find them when they’re outside with all the snow. They have tunnels in the snow now to get around the camera has a hard time finding them with all that white on the ground. lol
Well the big day is near and I sure all the pandas have their socking hung with care as visions of fruiticle dance in their heads as they wait for Old Panda Claus to fill them so full they’ll have roll out the next day for all their fan to view.
Beary Christmas and a Pantastic New Year to All

How wonderful it is that not only the pandas but also the bloggers delight us.
P.Wong – love your conversations.
Pamela’s poems are priceless.
DoxieMom – all your efforts mean so much to us. It was cute to see Bai and Yun playing together yesterday. Then suddenly Yun headed to the branch, and Mom sat calmly eating her boo.
I’ll miss the cams and blogs for a week in early January, but the exciting reason is that I’m traveling from the East Coast to visit SDZ! Some of my friends don’t quite understand my excessive anticipation, but no doubt you all do.

Is the new lawn on exhibits from the Wish List? Looked really nice. I hope it’ll stay for awhile.
Moderator’s note: It was from the Wish List. A big THANK YOU to the donor!
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 am
Will there be another visit from Panda Claws this season? I read the previous poems over and over again at this time of year.
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:25 am
#197 PA pandafan – I totally understand – I wish I was coming with you. I hope you have two-day tickets – you will need it to take in all the wonderful animals. I heard there is a new restaurant at SDZ – would be worth a try; but for sure, you can’t go wrong with Treetops (great food and beautiful location). Enjoy your visit – seeing a real, live giant panda for the first time is an awesome experience. Take lots of photos and tell us all about it when you get back.
Moderator’s note: Our new Sabertooth Grill in Elephant Odyssey is wonderful and provides a view of the elephants while you dine!
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:30 am
Panda fans, the toe/foot tapping appears to be genetic – it’s 10:30 am SDZ time and Su Lin is sitting on a branch, her upper body leaning against another branch, and her left foot is tapping the air!! Too cute!!
December 22nd, 2009 at 10:41 am
Watching our local news here in San Diego last nite and they had great close up and in color coverage of the two of them playing in the classroom. Great coverage! Sure makes a difference over watching them on the computer!
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 am
Just curious with all the views of the Sisters on Camera today does this mean Yunior is getting an examination today? It is great to see them and wish we could see Gao Gao as well…..

Brilliant P Wong. I hope Yun Zi doesn’t get Columbo’s dodgy eye along with his raincoat.

)
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:23 am
OMG! 2:20 pm Michigan time…just catching the cam and lo and behold, Mam and Yunior are in the classroom!!! Oh, I wish we could see better than from up in the “clouds”!! But I’ll take it!! Will there be an exam this week – I would think even tho’ it is christmas the routine still goes on?
On another note…has there been any “Panda Claws” stories this year? I may have missed them…will have to go through some of the recent blogs.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!! Enjoy your first Christmas Yunior!!!
Moderator’s note: An exam is scheduled for today.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:26 am
Oh DoxieMom – I hope you’re catching what’s going on now.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:28 am
Peeked in on Bai and Yun Zi just now (I’m going to get fired!!) GREAT play session going on. (Camera 28?)
At one point it looked like Bai put her paw on Yun Zi’s forhead to “hold” him back because he was doing his best to be a little pest while she was eating her bamboo. And the way she just sits there and looks down at him while he’s chewing on her is hilarious… Makes you wonder what is going through her mind…
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:30 am
Yeah, he did it! He finally decided to explore the classroom. Glad to see the platform on the log that ZZ had trouble climbing at his size. You can see boo moving in the foreground, so Bai Yun is obviously nearby enjoying lunch while little man explores. Glad to see he is awake long enough to explore.
I will be home during the day for the next 10 days, so I am really excited that I will have access to my PC at lunch and snack breaks to watch my beloved pandas all over the country.
I love the grass and hope it lasts long enough for Yun Zi to experience it when he goes on exhibit. I know all the pandas enjoyed it in the Spring the first time around. Gao especially.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 am
It is hilarious to see mini Yun sitting up against the log like mom mouthing his boo. Too cute. I laughed out loud. It is amazing to see him sitting up just like his mom.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:57 am
someone- dont know if it’s Bai or any of the others is outside now in the class room exhibit according to the cam # and keeps falling off the rock they are climbing on and falling all over a wooden looking pedestal!! how funny!
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Wow…I’ve been watching Yun Zi for about an hour now and somebody is going to sleep good tonight.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:09 pm
I want to wish our fabulous Moderator a wonderful holiday season and all the best in 2010.
And to all of the staff at the SDZ who take such good care of our pandas and all the other animals my sincere thanks for a job well done.
And finally a very Merry Christmas to all the pandas. May Yun Zi grow up to be a healthy and strong panda like his siblings and his parents.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:10 pm
What an absolute delight to be able to watch Yun frolick among the trees, climb on the logs, tumble off and get right back up and do it again. No wonder when he sleeps he really sleeps! What a joy to see the little guy living in peace and without a care in the world. Happy Holidays

Just posted a Tuesday YouTube video
Not sure if he had his exam this morning around 8am, but when the camera switched back to him in the den, he was on his way out the den door to investigate the bedroom. Upon returning to the den, he turned around and did some more exploring!!
The link for “Yun Zi: After the Exam?” is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r_wSNcY0bg
I’ll have 1 or maybe 2 more videos later today from their play session out in the classroom around 11:30! Yes, I was watching and recording
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Didn’t see all her antics of course, but the description makes me giggle anyhow. What fun all our pandas have been and will continue to be.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:47 pm
The video of Yun Zi and Momma out at play in the classroom is the cutest thing I have EVER seen. He is beyond adorable now that he’s mobile. Trying to climb a branch is too cute, too.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Moderator (you’re the one I can trust with my questions!
)- Will the pandas/polar bears get snow for Christmas? Or maybe later? Do we have a date for Yunior’s public debut? Thanks SO MUCH for the view of Su Lin right now!!!! Still our little (big) cutie!
Moderator’s note: Our elephants got snow last week (see video), but there are no plans at present for pandas or polars to receive snow. It is very expensive, although I’m sure those living on the East Coast would gladly send us some!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I’ve been watching Su Lin and ZZ………..TYSVM……..I’ve missed those two feisty girls………..
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:20 pm
WOW….Just vied the Video with Anastasia narration of The play yesterday…..Yun Zi defintly is showing that he has caught up and surpassed his sisters at a similar age ….Can’t wait for the exam results and videos to be posted as I bet he was doing the squirming worm for whoever tried to hold him today….LOL…… For those of you that don’t know to hit video button below the pandacam box the play video is at :

Lynn is still in a suspended sleep as the Doctor’s are trying to get rid of the blood clot and her to allow her home hopefully for New Years Eve….Will keep all my SDZ Friends and GPF Family and Friends posted when I hear from the Medical Facility as they were hoping for Christmas to help with her depression but now are shooting for New Years instead……

I’ve been watching Su Lin today. It’s so great to have her on cam, and I sent myself several postcards to store in my SDZ album. I also watched the “Yun Yun Explores” and “Yun and Mom playing” videos. Thank you for posting them. Priceless. Yes, when he finally broke the barrier, he’s becoming quite the charming, playful, and sweet little Panda Cub we’ve been waiting to see.
I was also fortunate to watch Tai Shan exploring through about 16 inches of beautiful snow over the last 2 or 3 days. He does love the snow. He will be so happy in China, even tho it makes me so sad.
I have been very busy this week, and will be even busier the rest of the week and next week. So I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you, wherever you are, and whaterver holiday you celebrate, the most wonderful, loving time with your families. From my world, I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
We love you, SDZ. Please be careful out there, so we will see you again on our GPF blogs.

December 23rd, 2009 at 9:28 pm
P Wong, how I wish I were an artist or cartoonist, because now I very much want to have a pic of Yun Zi wearing Columbo’s trench coat! LOL! All of the talk about Yun Zi exploring every nook and cranny of the exhibit space took me back in time 13 years … my youngest son, who will be 14 years old in January, did exploring behaviors when he was small. Whenever we would go over to my parents’ house, he would methodically investigate every room of the house, seemingly every inch. Always the same route. Even if we had just been there the previous day. My mom suggested perhaps he was checking to make sure everything was still there. Yun Zi frequently reminds me of this son of mine, I think they must be related somehow.

#19 Doxiemom. Thank you for the Dec.17 footage of baby exploring. He seems to be thinking “OK, now what’s that over there!”
So precious.
