A Whirlwind 16th Exam
Posted at 3:18 pm December 15, 2009 by Yadira Galindo
To summarize today’s panda cub exam:
It was another whirlwind Yun Zi checkup. Now that he’s figured out what his legs can do, he seems to be ready to use them during his exams. Once again the little guy only wanted to be on the floor where he could walk around among the giggling Zoo staff. He didn’t seem to care that we were chuckling at his expense…well, not at him, more because of him. His wobbly gait is something to make you smile and, yes, laugh out loud! Dr. PK Robbins (pictured below) pointed out that pandas “move a bit differently,” and that a panda’s “front legs learn quicker than the back legs.”
She wasn’t kidding! His front legs seem strong and much more coordinated than his back legs, which seem low to the ground in a crouch position. Pandas are pigeon toed, which makes Yun Zi’s wobble (it’s not really a walk) look even more comical. He insisted on showing off his newly developed skills, so most of what I could see was his rear end as he tried time and time again to get to the floor for a stroll. When he was in the arms of the keeper or Dr. Robbins, he would attempt to climb them.
Is this a sign he’s ready to start the next phase? I don’t know. What I do know is that Yun Zi was making us all snicker, especially after Dr. Robbins observed “he only turns to the right.” Every time he tried to move in a different direction he seemed to choose to turn right. Could it be because he’s still learning to use his motor skills and doesn’t know how to use his left turn signal? Or, was it simply the choice of a silly boy to make us laugh? I’m stumped. What I do know is that he was on the move so much that the Zoo’s nutritionist gave up on trying to get his measurements because he just couldn’t keep still; she finally sighed, “Not today!”
Today the staff at the Giant Panda Research Station was not in charge. Not today. It was a day when an 18-pound, 2-foot long, black-and-white bundle of fur ran the show.

Marvelous write-up Yadira. It is good to laugh when you can. I’m sure he took no offence to it. Once babies start walking the world is their kingdom and nothing is going to stop them from exploring.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Wonderful!!! I saw him turn left once. Was he chewing Kathy’s jacket sleeve? Cute….
Yadira responds: Yes, he’s teething.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Thank you Yadira
I have been laughing so much I have tears streaming down my face. You guys at SDZ just have the best job – loved the video and thanks for posting it so soon – just magical. Our Yun Zi is just the most wonderful little panda isn’t he. i feel so bleesed to be able to share him with you all.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I laugh out loud too. What a cute boy, maybe he will explore the outside very soon, and then his fans can watch him in person next few weeks.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
I just watched the adoreable video of YunZi’s 16th exam. I have a question?
I thought everybody who handled pandas had to wear plastic gloves on there hands to keep the pandas safe from germs, diseases, etc., from humans???
It didn’t look like the doctor and other assistant were wearing any, why not?
I for one would hate to see YunZi get ill…………………Thank you………..
Yadira responds: Now that he’s had his vaccinations, gloves are not required. However, they still washed their hands before handling the bruiser.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Yun Zi!! I have watched all of his sisters and brother grow up but I have to say he is the cutest thing…I ;ook forward to seeing him and mom on exhibit.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
We know who runs the show, dont we???
December 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Always looking forward to his exams. I love this little Yun fellow!
Question: I’ve been concerned about his eye sight. How are his eyes? Can you do eye exams to see if his eyes are normal panda-vision?
Yadira responds: The vets check his eyes during each exam and have no concerns.
December 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
I think I saw Kathy the Sr. Keeper get a couple extra hugs in!!! Lucky girl!!!
December 15th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Thanks for the great write-ups to keep us informed. I thought he was less active then his sister. I loved watching Yen Yen learning to climb and go up the step to get out of the den. Give him time, and I am sure once Yun Zi gets going there will be no stopping him. Please give us notice when he will go on display so we can see him in person.
December 15th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
He definetly has a mind of his own…precious, cute and sweet.
He’s come a far way from last week. Just the owe wee when he fell…
I was surprised that Bai left him unattended though…..but she gets a one track mind too…when it comes to food.
He is also a ham…….how can I make them laugh…..????? (just being your cute little self.)
I hope I can see him before the 28th because he’ll be 9 or 10 months old after tax season and I so want to see him when he’s this small…..
Where will he be when he can first be viewed…..class room???????
I know it’s up to Bai and Yun….us humans are getting restless!!!!!
Yadira responds: We’ll let everyone know when and where, don’t worry!
December 15th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
After each exam video I ask myself, could he possibly get any cuter? Then lo and behold, the next video comes and by golly, he has!!
December 15th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
I think many of us comparing Yun Zi to Zhen Zhen forget that we considered her “advanced” so by comparison little brother looks slow. I agree with one of the other bloggers in the last blog who said he’s probably just relaxed like Big Daddy Gao Gao.
Saw him feeding and playing with Bai around 5:15-5:30 PT this morning–a great way to start the day.
He is just the cutest little cubmuffin of joy, isn’t he?
December 15th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Dear Bai Baby,
Check out the video on our boy! Woah, he makes the old man proud. He knows his mind and he just showed the human healers how determined he is.
Honey, you’re doing great raising Yunior. Hope you are still telling him those Panda Tales and help him keep connected to our homeland.
How’s the boo? Hope you are getting enough, got to keep the milk going for Yun Yun. He looks almost ready to start climbing.
Although we wont be getting together till 2011, I want you to know you are always in my heart. Can’t wait. Maybe we can try for No. 5 cos you really are one great Momma.
Lots of Love,
Your Boo Boo Baby, Gao
December 15th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Guess who was in charge today – and it wasn’t the staff – it was a baby panda
And some were concerned about this “robust guy” being slow – take note – he is not slow at all
He may march to a different drummer but he sure all “boy panda” & yes boy pandas are somehow different than females – hard to put into words but after watching Tai, SuLin, Lani, Zhen Zhen, XiLan & now this fluffball they are raised a tad differently by their moms.
December 15th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
he is just too CUTE!!! Sure moving around alot more, and still making my favorite noise…the panda squeek!Much love to him and mama as always!
December 15th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
All I can say is what a little doll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
December 15th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
I had to smile at the “only turns to the right” comment while watching the video of the exam. Maybe he was just feeling a bit confused and dazed after waking from his sleep. I am sure that his “left turn signal” works just fine! =)
December 15th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
My Wife kept shoving pics and vids of this cub in my face until I, ahem, I became interested. From all I have seen, Bai Yun seems to be managing his development with amazing precision. Good Moms are like that, yes they are. He performs on cue for the most part and the den phase which should have passed, well? If one watches in the wee hours, the stars on camera appear to enjoy simply cuddling. When it becomes overly confining is when our young cub will probably be ousted for bigger and better things. IMHO, that is? Smiles, and a hearty good job, San Diego!
December 15th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Maybe he’s Republican? Only going to the right? QUICK….turn him around!!! : )
December 15th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
My goodness, he is getting so big. Thanks for the exam and write up. And Kathy, you are so lucky being able to cuddle with him. Although his nails look very sharp to me.
December 15th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Mr Wiggles just doesn’t disappoint, week by week he get’s cuter. SDZ, you all are great with him. (and us, too.)
December 15th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Is it possible to view older videos of Su Lin or Mei Sheng?
Moderator’s note: We do have some older panda videos on our YouTube page: http://www.youtube.com/sdzoo
December 15th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Surprised to see video and blog early in the week…..
I still can’t find “zoom” on my AOL page……would have been handy when he was small.
When I watched him turn to the right on the video, I was wondering if he was just trying to go back thru the door he came in!
What would happen if you just let him go and see what he would check out?
I bet he would have more fun with the keepers than being alone in the den messing with bamboo!
December 15th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Thank you for another sweet video of our little Yun Zi. I wonder if he kept turning right … because he wanted to get back to his den … ??? To me he looked like a fellow on a mission to get somewhere … and right now … ! Perhaps I am just imagining things. Oh, well, loved watching. Think I will watch again.
December 15th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
“Extra robust” must be the secret code words for “fat”! I guess it just wouldn’t look very scientific to write in Yun Zi’s medical log that he’s fat, fat, FAT! But he’s also super cute, cute, CUTE! I just cannot get enough of this darling widdle boy! He makes my day, every day.
December 15th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
this little guy is just too cute for words! he is such a rolly polly ball of fluff. I can’t believe that he has grown this big already. from a stick of butter to prince bruiser! lol……..baby pandas never cease to amaze me and amuse me beyond words!! what fun we all have to look forward to in the coming months!
needless to say, so do the keepers!!! lucky you!!… 18 lbs already and steadily gaining. wow!
December 15th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Yadira ,Many thanks,as I’ve stated in past blogs he is a natural Super Star that loves performing for his adoring fans and the Pandarazzi and red carpet events…..LOL…..Just let him see cameras and he seems to come alive……LOL……Now if we could pmlu get a live showing of his next exam it would be a GPF’s idea of heaven as the exam videos always seem too short for our Night Owl “Yunior”……. At least we can watch them over and over…..
Still hoping that Lynn is brought out of the Twilight Induced Sleep in the Hospital so I can share all my GPF Family and Friends Get Well Wishes and Prayers ,as All I want For Christmas is to have her by my side as we enter her 12th. Month of Hospitalization…..I have many Videos thanks to DoxieMom and the SDZ Staff as well as the Blogs to catch her up on the Gao Gao,Bai Yun Clan and now Adelaide as well….Many Thanks to all as you are all helping us through a difficult year in some ways I can’t wait for it to end….But Thanks to “Yunior” and his calming ways has become a High Light to a Dismal year for us…..
“Panda Peace on Earth,Goodwill to All Living Things.”
December 15th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
This was the most fun video – the smart humans trying to run the show, but no, Yun Zi had another idea. “I’ll run this show. I’m walking now and I want to travel!!” He has been so active that last few days. He has such a personality.
On Friday my students will be getting their “Yun Zi” adoption papers. They will be so excited – they’ve watched since August. Thank you SDZ
Moderator’s note: Please thank your students for adopting Yun Zi and helping us help pandas!
December 15th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
As always .. too cute !! I think he was going to the right on purpose. =)
December 15th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
He is soooooooooooo adorable, i am in love. I am glad he got to wave bye at the end. It is so funny when he was making little squeaks, when he was climbing on them. He was wiggling when they were trying to take his measurements. Here is a song and story about Yun Zi.
Oh Yun Zi, Oh Yun Zi, Will you let me take measurements? Oh Yun Zi will you hug me? Oh Yun Zi, Oh Yun Zi, oh how i love you, oh your big eyes, your sharp teeth, and look at those big feet, and that big belly! Oh Yun Zi , Oh Yun Zi, oh how i love you.
Yun Zi
Vet
Yun Zi: Hey look at me! I think I will show my feetsies off!
Vet: Come on stay still. AHh your claws are so sharp and look at you, your teething! Wow your a robust cubbie.
Yun Zi: yea I am arn’t I? I am a handsome boy. Oh will someone give me a mirror I want to see how I look, I know I look good I just want to see and make sure I am a handsome boy.
Story about Su Lin
Zhen Zhen
Yun Zi
Zhen Zhen: Oh hi, just texting Mom to tell her I am going shopping again! I need hundreds of clothes so, when I am on exhibit, I will look good when I am getting photographed.
Yun Zi: oh cool, well I am going to play and fight with mom, and later take some boo from mom.
Zhen Zhen: well off to shop see ya! (phone rings) hello oh hi mom! Yes I am going shopping oh no time to talk got to shop shop shop!!
December 15th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
He is so cute. I enjoy reading what you write about the exams. You make it funny and fun. I think it is cute that he knows he can get around better and wants to show everyone.
December 15th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Another well written update! Thank you………so our little boy isn’t a Nascar driver….YET. (Drivers only make left hand turns just in case you didn’t know.) I haven’t had a chance to read all the posts from the last topic. Help! I need a summary.
Cutie PooTootie Bear.
December 15th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
My goodness, what an arm full he’s becoming! I just had to laugh watching this video, he’s certainly got loads of personality! And I just love those little back legs – they’re adorable!!! Thank you for posting the video so quickly. He is absolutely darling and oh so huggable!
December 15th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
I melt everytime I watch these videos! He is so adorable and really walking well for someone who still has motor skills to improved. His complaints were quieter and did I hear everyone calling him Yun-Yun? That is a nickname I could easily warm up to! Notice how the past few exams he heads back towards the door. He seems to know his way back to the den! I love him so much!! He looks so tiny on the camera and so big in the videos!!
December 15th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I hear the keepers calling him “Yun Yun…Yun Yun…!” It’s sooooo cute! He is such a sweetheart…every time I see him he gets more adorable. Please don’t laugh – I couldn’t resist petting his round little bum on my monitor………!! Confessions of a dire pandaholic… ><
December 15th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
only turns to the right. hahahahahahahaha. that is high larry us. and ‘rightly’ so. love you so yun zi.
December 15th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Thanks again, and again Yadira. And the video is just amazing. Our little bruser is really on the go, just saying let me get out of here and outside where I can climb a tree. I am so happy to be a part of this great Panda story.
December 15th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I am so proud of Yun Zi. What a beautiful fluffy guy. He is so adorable. I like his noises. He seems comfortable around people, when he is not being measured. I am very proud of him.
December 15th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Yun Zi always turns right, I think becasue he remembers the den is in the right side, see that, whenever he is carried back to the den, the keeper turns right with Yunnie in arm. he does not like to be out, he wants to go back den, so he always turns right. He remembers the door to his den is in the right. Am I right? Dear Moderator?
Moderator’s note: Seems plausible to me.
December 15th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
wow he is sooo big
December 15th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
Yun Zi has it firm in mind that if he turns right , he can get back to his den sooner or later ….so he keeps turning right… One firm believer..
December 15th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
I’d like to thank you for all information and videos with Yun Zi, which you post . It is for me an uniqe and only possibility to observ and learn about pandas live, growing up and theirs habitats. So I can,t wait for the next report to see Yun Zi exploring the world and learning more a nd more. The Video from the 16-th exam is great, espacially Yun Zi!
Take care ! I’m going to the work in a very good mood today! Your fan Aleksandra
December 15th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
So he only turns to the right?! Either his steering wheel is stuck or he’s going to be a very conservative panda when he grows up!
Very nice report on what turned out to be a rather hectic exam, with Yun Zi making a run for it whenever he got the least chance. Thanks for posting both the report and the video so promptly. We Pandamaniacs have to get as much of a daily fix as we can.
DoxieMom: I looked at some of your videos on YouTube last night and was charmed. You do such a tremendous job at those. He didn’t seem too fazed by his little tumble — just righted himself and kept on moving. And the one where he’s noticing his reflection in the metal wall is priceless! Do pandas have self-awareness in a mirror, as apes and elephants do, or are they like most dogs and cats and think it’s another animal they can’t quite reach?
December 15th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
good night YUN ZI. try not to keep momma BAI up too late. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
December 15th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
What ah good little boy….glad the vet doesn’t want to push him, he’s the boss of us all! He still seems so tiny looking down at him from above in the nursery…. I’m so glad, our little baby. kiss, kiss, kiss.
December 15th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Yun Yun …what a cute nickname. He sure does love Kathy
! His eyes are so sweet too. Another great video. Also thanks DoxieMom for your terrific videos too. Great to see him grow.
December 15th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
#24 Jeslyn in San Diego
I remember that the SDZ staff did let Su Lin go by her own in one of her health exams, Su Lin crawled out of the door , Vet Tracy Clippinger went out to check her out and said ” She is behind the door ” !
December 16th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Did Kathy’s jacket have teeth marks in it? How does she carry him by the scruff with such weight?
I know that is the best way, but will you have to do things differently soon…like cradle him?
December 16th, 2009 at 1:05 am
How many cuddles did the staff get in!!! Every chance they got they were stroking him. Good on you! I suppose if he likes to go right that’s fine, at least he’ll always come back to where he started.
#24 Jeslyn, have you got a bar in the bottom right hand corner (above the one with info about your computer’s state of play) which says ‘100%’? It may also have a little magnifying glass picture with a plus sign in it. Hit that and it should give you a choice of how much you want to enlarge your picture.
December 16th, 2009 at 1:18 am
I just watched ZZ exam 2 years ago – about the same age as Yun Zi. She was much quieter and didn’t move as much as he does. She wiggled much less than our boy and stayed near the keepers. Also looked much smaller. Just thought I would write a note about it.
December 16th, 2009 at 3:05 am
Another priceless moment shared by SDZ. You MUST know how much your videos and reports mean to so many of us who are smitten by these special animals. I laugh every time I see Yun Zi tumble around and his interactions with Bai are so special – the pandas always put sunlight in my day! Thanks to all of you who give such outstanding care to all the pandas. Tough job loving a panda, huh?
December 16th, 2009 at 3:28 am
Has anyone noticed: when right before Mommy is getting ready to leave the den she puts her nose up as if she is smelling something, finishing whatever she is doing and leaves the den. I seam to find she does this almost every time! Watch and see if you notice this, maybe I’m just imaging it.
DoxieMom you are so good to spend energy helping us catch up when we miss something special. Thank you!

December 16th, 2009 at 3:43 am
I loved watching the video of Yun Zi and of him trying to do his own thing and everyone trying to keep up with him. He is getting so big and he is just too cute.
December 16th, 2009 at 4:09 am
Yadira, thank you so much for a lovely story and the priceless video. Yun Zi is absolutely adorable with his wobbly gait only wanting to turn to the right. It shows already that he is determined to do just what He fancies, what a boy! #12 Sherie, you are right! I also thought little Yun-Yun (I just love the nick-name!) could not get any cuter. But he sure does! His round bum is too cute for words. He is extra robust or to put it differently “well proportioned”, mind you just a bit of puppy fat. I am sure that will vanish the moment he really starts moving and zooming around. I feel a baby panda just has to look round.
December 16th, 2009 at 5:51 am
I would also love to know if Yun Zi thinks it is another panda in his reflection, but maybe he is the only one who knows. One of our Bichons barked and growled at her reflection when she was a pup. I’m sure she thought it was another dog. Now she’s figured it out, though sometimes she still barks at animals on TV.
I’ve been watching the Lin Ping TV channel. Lin Ping is a bit older than Yun Zi, having been born in May. It loads in short few-second spurts, which is annoying (does anyone have a fix for that?), but the footage is very good. She still lives with her mother and plays with her and nurses. But she also works one-on-one with a human trainer, Mom is not present.
I saw a trainer working in the caged area teaching her to climb on a ladder. After a while, she got off and sat on her big plastic rocking horse. Panda on rocking horse! Priceless! They are very hands-on with the training. They also today were running a composite of her training sessions. The keeper was teaching her to climb up tree branches to a platform.
I think they may have posted the last composite session on You Tube as there is one called “Lin Ping Panda Cub Plays Outside 120809.” Highly recommended for those who get their deep-breathing exercises by going “Ohhhhhh….” at cuteness.
So, a question and a thought: Do the San Diego handlers also work with that way, or do you leave all the training to Bai Yun?
Thought: Might there be Communication Arts or film students at UCSD or San Diego State or another local college who would love to come make little documentary movies (for free as class work) of Yun Zi when he’s out and about and not so protected by Mommy to post on your YouTube channel? If I were teaching that subject, I would allow that as a project in a second.
Moderator’s note: Our keepers let Bai Yun train her cubs as she sees fit, but they do have brief sessions with him to get him used to them. This will come in handy when he gets older and learns how to go on and off exhibit when asked.
December 16th, 2009 at 5:55 am
What a panda!! So adorable … so lovable.
December 16th, 2009 at 6:06 am
Very cute – Yunior is sleeping just inside the den right now while Bai is sleeping right outside with her head next to the pudgy – er, “robust” one!
Thank you moderator, for directing us to the Zoo’s YouTube page – I’ve been watching some old videos of Zhen Zhen – she sure is a cutie and a lot smaller than His Royal “Robustness”, Yun Zi. But I don’t think Yunior is slow at all – He just seems so determined and strong-willed. Substantial in body and in mind! I think he knows exactly what he wants and when he wants it – eating, sleeping, and cuddling with mom! I see him as rather a little hedonist
But seriously, I can just picture him thinking he is “King Panda” as he walks on that carpet, showing off, flirting with all the vets, unaware of how delightful his little waddle is to all of his adoring fans!
December 16th, 2009 at 6:24 am
This is such a wonderful way to start my day….thank you. Quick question which I will phrase delicately….when does he start going potty on his own? I noticed that wasn’t listed on the mile stones page. Thanks so much for the videos and updates.
I’ll forward this question to the Panda Team.
Moderator’s note: I never occurred to me to include that milestone
December 16th, 2009 at 6:58 am
Only turns to the right? I see a future for him as a UPS driver.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:02 am
Little man doesn’t seem to want to go back outside. Mom has taken him out twice this morning and he hurries right back to the den. Is he still tired from his great adventure on Sunday , or do you think something frightened him? Hope not!!
December 16th, 2009 at 7:30 am
I have a question regarding adopting Yun Zi. Is it possible to tell the zoo not to send the plush toy, so that more funds go to the zoo? Can I put that request in the comment section? Thank you.
Adoption Team responds: Yes, you can request an adoption without the plush if you like. Thank you.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:41 am
What a way to start the day. My colleagues were wondering why I was laughing. Yun Zi is such a comical little guy with a mind of his own. The world is yours little panda. I am looking forward to receiving my adoption papers on Yun Zi. My sister thinks I should come back as a panda when I leave this world. But only if I can be at the San Diego Zoo and not in the wilderness. Seems like a good idea.
Moderator’s note: Thank you and enjoy your little adopted cub!
Have fun!
Shirley
December 16th, 2009 at 8:06 am
Yadira, thanks for keeping us pandaholics updated on Yun Zi. He keeps getting cuter every week!!! How is that possible?
Thankyou SDZ for taking such good care of our pandas!!!
December 16th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Lun Lun and Xi Lan are outside right now with Lun Lun eating her bamboo while Xi Lan is nursing. Lun is not missing a beat!! I guess there is not fight over milk between panda mum and cub…
December 16th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Hi all! Whenever I see that little fluffy cottonball rump trying to move around, first I grin from ear to ear and then somewhere in the back of my mind I hear that distinctive rustling noise that disposable diapers make
Little Cloud is just so incredibly precious. He is definitely Momma’s Boy. I saw him sitting (just like a mini-Bai) in his den a few days ago gnawing on some tiny bamboo matchsticks, like he knew what he was doing…hahahahaha!
Keeper Kathy, you have got to be one of the luckiest people in the world! Do you play the Powerball, per chance? Hehehehe!
Thank you SDZ staff for all of the wonderful videos and articles. And especially for the love, care and respect you give all of the animals
December 16th, 2009 at 8:31 am
When I went to babysit my nearly 3-year old grandson the other day, I noticed that he had this lump in his shirt. Upon inquiring, I found out that it’s the plush panda toy that came with the adoption kit I sent to the two boys. So naturally I asked why the panda was “under” his shirt, instead of his carrying it. Turns out he remembered all the videos with Bai holding on to the baby, and so he wanted to have the baby right next to him too.
Then when the older (6-year old) grandson came home from school, we naturally watched the video of the 15th exam. And we watched Doxie’s video of Bai and Yun Zi rolling around. Elliot then took the panda toy and began rolling around on the floor with the little panda, jumping up every now and again to check to make sure he was “doing it right.” He even got the part of rolling ONTO the baby!!! I was trying so hard not to laugh myself silly throughout all of this! And of course, during the exam, Elliot made sure the panda toy did exactly what Yun Zi was doing!
I can’t thank you all enough for the wonderful education this is providing all of us. The grandkids have learned so much about conservation, growth patterns, parenting, care, love – you name it, Bai Yun and Yun Zi provide it all. What life lessons we get just from watching them!!!
And then today I got to see the 16th exam. Like so many others, I just laughed myself into a stupor! This boy is one adorable, cute, scrumptious fat little morsel of cuteness. Watch out world! When he is ready to go on exhibit there will definitely be panda-monium!!!!
Moderator’s note: It sounds like your grandsons rival Yun Zi in the cute department!
December 16th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Thank you updating us! I laughed when the doctor referred to Yun Zi as even fuller figured than before. He’s so cute and round!
If YZ instead only made left turns, he could be a race car driver when he grows up but alas, it is not to be!
He has a white spot on each “heel.” Do Bai Yun, Gao Gao or any of Yun Zi’s siblings have similar white spots?
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I just love watching the exam videos–Yun Zi seems to get bigger and more active with each one! Yesterday (via the panda cam) I noticed that he was doing something with a piece of bamboo (teething?). It was really fun to watch him with it! He’s such a little cutie!!!
December 16th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Moderator, do you know if the keepers will provided an updated cub growth chart? From what I can make from adding yesterday’s weight to last week chart, it seems that Yun Zi is getting ahead of the pack even more than before. I guess that all the sleeping instead of running around is helping putting on the pounds (or kilos for us, the International System of Units users)…
Moderator’s note: I’ll ask.
December 16th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I am very curious how Vets and handlers judge the cub’s emotional and mental development? At what point in time is this observed (i.e. at what week of age), or is it? Is this a measured development? Can a Vet judge/measure mental skills in the cub?
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.
December 16th, 2009 at 9:55 am
It’s 0956 hrs and Yuni looks just like Bai Yun, sitting up in the den noshing (teething) on boo.
December 16th, 2009 at 10:01 am
I had to laugh when I read that Yun Zi wouldn’t let the keepers measure him during his 16th exam… Ever since I saw the picture of him holding his head during the 13th exam, I knew it was because he had seen the measuring tape… Good luck trying to measure him in the future… He knows that cuteness can not be measured in any unit system… LOL
December 16th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Yun Zi sure likes to chew on the bamboo, does he eat it yet?
Hes so cute rolling around in his nest.

I don’t know if it was the camera angle but, he looks like he is more of an arm(s) full. I would have thought that his weight gain would slow down now that he is moving about more.
I just love watching him play with the twigs. Rolling around on his back, hind legs moving about. I don’t know why but I think his little paws are just adorable.
Thanks to all who bring us the blogs, videos and cam!
December 16th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Is little Yun Zi swallowing any of that boo, or is he just teething?
Moderator’s note: He’s just teething.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:38 am
good one #75. i’ll be siinging that while i make gingerbread cookies today. better than getting stuck on ‘it’s a small world la dee da’. oops! sorry everyone.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:42 am
He is moving well I think though he does seem to have a directional problem. I love to hear him bark though. He is a typical toddler wanting what he wants and not liking being restrained. So much fun to watch. Thanks Yadira.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Yun Zi is his Father’s son, part macho man, part coach potato.
December 16th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I look forward to his exam videos….he gets more adorable every day! Thanks for keeping us updated!
December 16th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
I can’t wait until the panda’s Christmas feast! (Is that right?) And I think Yun Zi gets toys. (Right?) I was at Disneyland/ C.A. Adventure these past 2 days, and when I get home…..Surprise! 2 new blogs! (And 1 new video!) I was so happy! We walked a total of 15 miles in 2 days! (Disneyland and C.A. Adventure really wears you out! When we went to the hotel, and kicked off our shoes, we discovered that our feet hurt.) Yun Zi is not in the den, but the cam is very nicely zoomed in. Wish it was like that all the time!
December 16th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
#78, I stood for half an hour in line at It’s a Small World Holiday, and endured the song plenty of times. It was in my head throughout the night! And yes, I will be singing that cute little panda song by #75, too. Yun Zi has all the attributes (and all the attitude) mentioned in the song. Thanks, Tami!
December 16th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Yun Zi is just way too cute! I love his little squeeks and his eyes, when he looks right into the camera, just melt your heart! He is going to be one handsome man when he grows up! You girls look like you are having a blast with the little fella….keep up the good work!
December 16th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Clever little Yun Zi has figured out how to induce a six-handed full-body massage in lieu of being measured–I call that advanced panda cub thinking!
December 16th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I was wondering if the scale/table could be Jerry-Rigged (sp?) with a wooden ramp of some sort…
Until Yun Zi can navigate heights as he grows?
Of course this might impede the workings of the scale for Bai Yun.
Oh well! I thought it was a good idea. Hate for Baby to have a concussion!
It is a joy to see Yun Zi growing so rapidly. I can’t believe that he is 4 1/2 Months old.
Today he was spending a great deal of time munching/teething on bamboo, alone in the den.
He seemed quite content, till he wore himself out…and took a long Winter’s Nap!

The newest growth chart has now been received and posted!
December 16th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
So cute! My crazy theory (after watching the video) is that Yun Zi doesn’t like the carpet. It seemed as though it was his goal to get off the carpet. Does it feel somehow different on his paws? Does it smell funny? I can’t recall if pandas see color, but is blue a color that he’s not comfortable with? No matter, he’s a guy on the move and seems to be on the brink of heading out to his bigger and brighter world.
December 16th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
I wasn’t able to get on the SDZ site at all yesterday. Look what I missed!! lol! Great report, Yadira. And great exam video. Thank you! Had to laugh about only seeing his rear-end. And what an adorable little rear-end! Re: your response to #5 Pat…Yay! someone else, besides me, is calling him “bruiser”.

#20 Telly26…Yes, he’s steering right for now, but I did see him lean to the left a couple times.
Also, Jeslyn. I understand your frustration with AOL. I never could find the key on their task bars, so I switched to yahoo!. There is a zoom key on their bottom task bar. Or maybe it’s the Explorer bar. Maybe you can just visit the SDZ site on yahoo! and “borrow” that function.
Someone mentioned a white spot on the back side of the hind foot. That has to be a family trait from Bai Yun. Don’t remember which ancestor it is, whether from Lun Lun or Yang Yang; Mei Xiang or Tian Tian. That white spot is in the blood line somewhere. Remember all the U. S. pandas (except for Gao Gao) are related.
December 16th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
thanks for all the advice but still can’t find a zoom thingy on my laptop…..and I clicked on things I never clicked on before!
Our boy doesn’t seem active today….guess being out a lot last nite wore him out…..and he wants the comfort and security of his den. He just doesn’t want to grow up and leave the comfort of his home…..
December 16th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
88. Diana,
I think your theory is spot on. I wouldn’t have thought of it myself but your idea makes sense. I wonder if the moderator could pass that on to the Panda People to see if you are right. In watching the video I see that he really does seem to scramble to get off the carpet. I guess that others may say he just is a bonehead bear who wants what he wants when he wants it.
Moderator’s note: I’ll relay the theory to our Panda Team.
December 16th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
#75 Tami: Good one…but now that song is in my head too…
#76 Lisa: I like to watch him too when he’s on his back… it seems his upper body is disconnected to his lower body… front paws going one way, back paws going the other and he always acts so happy when he rediscovers his back paws… Makes you wonder just what he’s thinking in that panda head of his…
December 16th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Well, now Yun Zi has had his first tumble onto his head – he shook himself a couple of times & went off.
I remember Tai’s first tumble – he did a great job of climbing onto their indoor climbing mountain one day while Mom Mei was outside & was maybe 8-12 inches off the ground but couldn’t figure out how to get down – he finally also did the SPLAT on his head. Tai turned out to be a great climber up the mountain but terrible at getting down. One day he got himself stuck at the top & tried & tried to find a way down – he finally called for Mom (the NZ cams have sound) & she came ambling in, climbed up the exhibit & guided him down. And then there was the day mom accidentally knocked Tai off the top of that mountain – we all heard the THUD & our hearts stopped – Momma Mei literally flew down to console her little one -she was frantic who had the wind knocked out of him but after 30 minutes or so of snuggling all was well again
And then we had Lun Lun who loved to drag Lani off the climbing structure & drop her on the ground- we are going to see many, many, funny SPLATS
December 16th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Thanks for posting the latest graph Yep, according to the chart our latest panda is “OH DOGGONE forgot the term” – is it “extra robust”
does this mean chubby panda needs some exercise – he is packing on the pounds & his pappa is a small panda
December 16th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Yun Zi is packing on the Panda Pudge. Bai Yun is funny when she shoves him away when she is eating. She won’t let anything get in the way of eating. Here is a story about Yun Zi and Bai Yun.
Bai Yun
Yun Zi
Bai Yun: (crunch crunch) ahh a day of boo enjoyment. No cub messing with me.
Yun Zi: Hi Mom, i am here!
Bai Yun: Oh no! I guess i can’t have a boo only day. But i guess i can try to get my boo day anyway.
Yun Zi: (Rub poke poke) hey mom mom mom!!
Bai Yun: Oh boy.
Yun Zi: Come on mom, Lets play!! Play with me! Play with me!
Bai Yun: Yes i will play with you after i eat. :O
Yun Zi: No mom play with me now, if you don’t i am going to keep poking you! >)
Bai Yun: Ahh i will have to go some where else then, Oh boy the things i have to do.(leaves to eat somewhere else)
Yun Zi: (climbs on tree stump) ha ha ha i have all her bamboo!! Yeah oh look i can climb this tree stump!! Yea!
December 16th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Yun Zi must be growing up – I noticed that Kathy’s blue gown was gone & she was in regular clothes
December 16th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
# 87 Moderator, thanks very much for the chart. That’s what I thought; he is really getting ahead of the pack as far as weight is concerned. We will see how he develops in the future.
After last week chart was posted, I start looking at the weight of panda cubs to see if there was a connection with their parents weights, and I got confusing results…
Su Lin is listed at 184 lbs for 2009, which is more than Gao Gao 162-174 lbs but less than Bai Yun 201-214 lbs.
Since Tai Shan is nearly the same age as Su Lin, I checked the NZ website. Tai Shan was listed at 168 lbs in December 2009, but at 205 lbs in June 2009. I thought there was a mistake and wrote to the NZ but they confirmed that Tai Shan did go through a summer slump, his bamboo consumption goes from 40 lbs per day in the winter to as little as 13 lbs per day in the summer. So Tai Shan weight in June was getting close to Mei Xiang weight of 237 lbs in the summer 2009, but he still has a way to go to catch up with Tian Tian who weight 276 lbs in the summer 2009.
I decided to check the pandas at the Atlanta Zoo and was quite surprised to read that on November 25, 2009, Mei Lan weight 190 lbs, which is more than Su Lin and Tai Shan even though Mei Lan is one year younger than Su Lin and Tai Shan. Lun Lun normally weight between 231 and 254 lbs, but on November 25, 2009 she weight 218 lbs (Xi Lan’s effect..). Yang Yang weight 275 lbs on November 25, 2009 and Xi Lan 62 lbs.
My conclusion is that we need way more panda cubs in the US to be able to draw any conclusion on the impact of the panda parent’s weight on the offspring’s weight!!! I am sure all of you will agree with my conclusion. LOL
December 16th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I’ve asked for Cliff Notes since I’m so busy with work…….I suspect they would read: Yun Zi is cuter today than yesterday, and Bai is still an incredible mom. Done! I’ve been able to sneak a look now and then at our boy but not for very long. THAT’S WHY, DOXIEMOM, AND PANDA TEAM, INCLUDING OUR DEAR MODERATOR, FOR EVERYTHING.
Page, #56, I too saw Lin Ping’s training session. When I peeked a look on the Thai TV channel today, the sound caught my attention first — she was climbing on the stucture all by herself today. She was having a great time. She is adorable. It is interesting the training she gets — and she gets a lot of inneraction with the keepers. They follow her every step outside, and encourage her to climb the outdoor structure.
I have a question on the den, and if it’s been answered before, I apologize. How many doors are on the den? Is there one always open? Thank you!
Moderator’s note: The one is always open during the denning phase.

pandas are my life i love pandas they are so adorabel i wish i can keep one at my house
December 16th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
i love waching the web cam videos of the pandas i wach them every day after school
December 16th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Isn’t our little boy adorable? I think Bai needs to start giving him lowfat milk! I am just mesmerized by this cute little fur ball. Right now he is playing in the doorway to the den. He seems to really like it there. I think he feels very secure and is not quite ready to go out. Glad Bai drags him out now and then to explore. It is so funny how he sits like a grown up panda and then rolls over since his little bottom is so round, what a weeble…. He is like a turtle on his back. The exam was great, I know the entire staff just wants to hug him, it is all over their faces. Lucky Kathy, I want her job for a day (on an exam day).
Personal note – Dennis and Lynn, I feel for all you are going through and you are in my prayers that all turns out well. I am sure most everyone has had a similar experience and would not want anyone to have to go through that. glad the little prince can make you smile and be a distraction for a little while!
December 16th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
This afternoon at around 3:30 Atlanta time, I was reading the new update describing Xi Lan as being ahead of his sister when it comes to eating “grown-up” foods, bamboo and biscuits, at the same age. It seems that at the same age Mei Lan seemed to still prefer mother’s milk over “grown-up” foods. I then went to watch the pandacam, and Xi Lan had just decided to be as goofy as can be… He was just all over Lun Lun, especially on her head, while she was eating her bamboo. At one point, he was completely covering her head with his four paws hanging in the air, and I still don’t know how she did that, but she continued to eat through the all attack… After a while she had enough and moved a bit, not that it stopped Xi Lan at all. Eventually he stopped attacking her, she stopped eating her bamboo and after walking around for a while, they settled down and Xi Lan decided that his mommy’s milk was not so bad after all. It was the second times I was seeing him nursing today. I guess, once the keepers write one observation, the cubs make sure to prove them wrong…
December 16th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
actually, Yunyun is a good name in Chinese!
He is so adorable!!!
December 16th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
9:00PM SDZ Time it’s dark out and Yun Zi ( Yun Yun /Yunior ) has been out on his Night Owl Prowling for some time now…..Maybe Yunior is on a different Time Zone as he is an active Night Owl….LOL……
I imagine after his Conquering of mount Bai Yun he is getting ready for the trees,as he has been attempting to climb with Bai Yun’s help when outside of the School observation area as shown by DoxieMom’s Videos…..He is his own Panda and from going back and reviewing his siblings growth right on schedule….Just watched the latest exam video again and he did go to the left when he squirmed out of Kathy’s grasp at least once…. Again he will tumble and fall and Mom will even drag him down as he starts his climbing but being flexible he will bounce right back up again as this is a normal part of developing the survival skills he would use if in the wild as Predators can’t get to a young cub out on the thin branches you swear aren’t strong enough to hold, just look at ZZ’s tree limb bounce again captured by DoxieMom….
To all at the SDZ and GPF Family and Friends , Lynn is still out of it in a Medically Induced Sleep while the Clot Buster Medications due their job …..I’m still hoping for a Christmas Miracle of at least being able to be with her hopefully in our Apartment she has never seen,or at a Medical Facility as we start year 2 of her Hospitalization for complications of her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease….Thank-you all as I have a lot to catch her up on the Global Pandaholic Fan’s around the world best wishes and prayers for her recovery…..
PANDAHOLICISM a wonderfull addiction to help you thru bad times as you can’t help but smile or laugh when watching them as Laughter is the best Medicine !!!

OK panda fans, if you went on the small world, you must have indeed noticed the big Panda in the ride??? right??? I have never seen an adult, only Zen Zen and Su Lin, and baby, so I can hardly wait until the adults are out so I can see a real Giant Panda! I will probably cry when I see Gao Gao, or Bai, I feel like I know them. I think its called (can’t spell it) anthromorphisum !
Moderator’s note: It’s as tough to say as it is to spell: anthropomorphism.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
#97 – Thanks for doing all that leg work for comparing other US panda weights with Su Lin. The graphs the SDZ provides with the exam updates recently are wonderful. I hadn’t realized how petite our “Little Bit of Something Cute” really is until seeing those graphs and reading your comments. She looks pretty big when we see her in person these days! But of course, she has been next to Zhen Zhen lately so it is hard to judge. I am anxious to see how big our “little man” Yun Zi turns out to be — those granddaddy Pan Pan genes must be coming out. As I recall from prior posts, Pan Pan was a huge bear.
December 16th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
Oh dear, Jeslyn. The only thing I can think of is that your operating system doesn’t support the zoom feature. I don’t know what system you have, but I’ve only had the zoom thingy for about a month now (it’s fantastic, don’t know how I lived without it before, can get right in close to the pandas and the polar bears). The newest operating systems will have this but you may have an older one. I know that Vista and Windows 7 have it.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:31 am
This morning about 12:15am, Bai Yun was in the den eating bamboo with Yun Zi, who was playing with
the bamboo also. Then she rolled her head and shoulders over onto Yun Zi and he could not get out
from under her. I was frantic because I thought sure she was going to accidentally crush him. About
10 minutes later, Yun Zi came out from under her.
My question is….How often are Bai Yun and Yun Zi monitored during the late night and early morning?
I have asked before if there was an emergency phone number that we late night panda watchers could call if we see something dangerous happening.
Is there such a number ? I know I was ready to call 911 at one point of time this morning.
Thank you, Gloria of Thousand Oaks, CA.
Moderator’s note: Yun Zi is fine. We do have staff at the Zoo all of the time. Unfortunately, these staff members are not usually available to answer phones when the Zoo is closed for the night.
December 17th, 2009 at 2:57 am
#89 Dianne…Yun Zi is related to Tian Tian (uncle) and Tai Shan (cousin). Not sure if they have white spots on their heels. It seems like I’ve heard people mention that the ZA pandas have distinctive markings on their feet or tails but YZ isn’t related to the ZA pandas is he?
I like that there are variations that make each panda distinct. Yun Zi has the white spots on his heels and the black tip on his tail. Some pandas have white tummies while others have a lot of dark shading on their bellies. It’s fun to figure out the little differences that make each panda physically unique!
December 17th, 2009 at 5:01 am
Lots of fuss about Yun Zi being so shy he hasn’t been out in public yet. Zhen Zhen didn’t go out until 20 weeks. After Hua Mei, each cub seems to take a bit longer than the previous one. (I love the chart, as you can see, small sample or not.) Maybe there is a reason for this. Bai Yun likes to keep them to herself longer? Or… well, we who are not animal scientists could all make up a million. Maybe his fast weight gain is part of a sleepier metabolism. Maybe it’s just genetic chance that he’s shy by nature. Maybe he’s just happy with his life as it is. Or maybe he’ll wander out tomorrow and surprise us all.
December 17th, 2009 at 7:05 am
6:40AM SDZ Time ….I laughed as I watched Yunior stare at his reflection in the den, perhaps primping for his next Pandarazzi Photo Shoot…..LOL…….Moderator, did we get a total tooth count with the last exam?
It was good to read in information from the SDZ Panda team that Panda’s do have the Olfactory Sensor’s in the Roof of their mouth which explains Bai Yun having Yunior in a nose to nose open mouth position and then Yunior knew that Bamboo was safe to use for teething pain…I also was surprised to learn that Panda’s share the so called stinky face response of pulling in scents like large cats into the Olfactory Sensor in the roof top of their Mouth…..I guess BearCat is the proper name for Pandas as they are related to their cousins large cats such as Lions or tigers as well as meat eating cousins Black,Grizzly,& Polar Bears….
“Panda Peace on Earth, Goodwill to all Life on Earth!
Yadira responds: He was much too wiggly to risk checking out those teeth!
December 17th, 2009 at 8:28 am
Dear Moderator,
Looking at the panda cub growth chart, it seems that Su Lin didn’t really gain any weight from days 75-85, and then never quite caught up after that. Did anything happend at that time to her or Bai that affected her weight gain/growth? It looks like that period might also be a turning point for panda cub development where individual variation begins to kick in? Prior to day 75, they are all pretty much on the same trajectory. The fact that they all more or less follow a linear growth pattern is certainly reasurring that our little boy isn’t heading for exponential weight gain!
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

Hello GPF’s! Only 8 days before Christmas – yikes!!! I discovered a great animal conservation website that has a very novel approach to their fundraising merchandise. It’s called
www dot eyehelpanimals dot com.
You might guess from the name that they focus on the eyes – yes, eyes of animals that are on the endangered list. 25% of their profits from sales goes to conservation programs. They have t-shirts, tote bags, and, collectible pins showing nothing but an eye or a pair of eyes. I purchased collectible pins that show a close-up of one giant panda eye – it is really neat – looks very much like abstract art!! Have a look! You never know what will catch your eye (pardon the pun)!!
Peeked in on the adorable YunYun just now – he’s zonked out, curled into a ball, and looking cute as can be. Great start to my day!! Have a good one, all!
December 17th, 2009 at 9:48 am
I am not in any hurry for Yun Zi to grow up. I am enjoying his baby stage. Soon enough, he will be out roughhousing with Bai Yun, then having cubs of his own. I am going to savor every second of Yun Zi’s baby stage. I think, Yun Zi is just trying to escape back to his den when he is at his checkup. I think he knows the way back to his den. Also, I noticed him smelling the floor. He is probably interested in exploring the area. SDZ’s website has opened up a whole new world for me. It makes me want to work at a zoo nearby. I wonder what all it takes to work with animals at a zoo. I am going to do some research. By the way, I like Yun Zi’s panda pudginess. He gets more adorable everyday.

Jeslyn #90–in addition to what Susan (UK) #107 said–if you use Firefox, you can get a plugin that allows you to zoom in and out (little magnifier button at the bottom of your screen) and I think Safari has one too–that’s if you have a Mac. Firefox works for PCs too–and it’s a free download. It won’t interfere if you want to continue to use AOL for other sites.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:11 am
# 90 Jeslyn, what operating system is on your laptop? If you have Windows XP or Vista ,and use Internet Explorer you should upgrade for free from Microsoft Windows Explorer 7 or 8 as they both have the magnification upto 400% plus you can open multiple tabs instead of seperate windows for viewing….Just search Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and go to Microsoft for the free upgrade….

I see Yunior is up and about playing near the drinker. I know I’m not the only one who talks to their computers to these babies when we are watching them on the Cams, I talk to all of them even Lin Ping and I know she doesn’t understand English, but I somehow thinks our US babies do hear us at least in my mind they do.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:31 am
Baby Yun Yun just had his sights on drinking from maybe a water spicket on a wall inside Bai’s bedroom. He kept checking it out and then went exploring over to the platform. He was standing up with his arms on it and reaching, you could see his little brain trying to figure out how he was going to get himself up top, he was stretching upward and them boom – tumbled backwards onto his fluffy butt! What a cutie.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Oh! Our tubby boy was having such a time just now exploring – trying to climb back onto the scale – tumbling over – then he discovered something on the floor that looked like some kind of a bag? – and the camera quickly switched away
Why do the panda cam operators seem to censor certain things – is there a liability involved in filming some of the staff while working and/or procedures? I assume there must be a good reason that is for the safety and well-being of the pandas, but I am curious to know!
Moderator’s note: We don’t like to show staff on the cams, as the cams are about the animals.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:32 am
Bless you for going in there and taking care of panda boy. Thank you. You comforted me to see that someone was in there taking care of him when he was trying to climb. Thank you.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Hi Moderator. I was just watching Prince Cuteness walking around Bai’s bedroom. He was trying to climb up on the scale(?) and fell over backwards, then thought he would rather walk around the scale than try to climb it again. When he went around the scale, it appeared there was a person on the floor? The camera switched over to SuLin so I just saw someone(?) very briefly… Am I seeing ghosts? Thanks, Dianna
December 17th, 2009 at 11:39 am
This is my “first cub” experience and I’m wondering at what age do the Vets stop doing weekly exams? Do ZZ or Su Lin still get occasional exams?
Moderator’s note: The pandas at the San Diego Zoo are trained for certain veterinary procedures, but for a more thorough exam or veterinary procedure they would be sedated. This doesn’t happen more often than once a year.
December 17th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Su Lin is such a big girl but, I just saw her go up that tree as if she had wings. God Bless.
I also just saw Yun Zi take quite a tumble. I hope he is okay??
Moderator’s note: He’ll be taking lots of tumbles as he practices walking and climbing. But don’t worry: panda cubs are built to take it
December 17th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Now that was really cute. Bai was eating in the classroom and Yun Zi started chewing on her foot. She stopped eating, put her bamboo in her other paw and very gently, supporting Yun Zi with her paw on his back, laid him on the ground. How sweet is that? I was expecting the ‘talk to the paw’ swipe.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
i am watching BAI YUN & YUN ZI enjoying the outside together. this is my first time seeing the baby outside with her mom. very interesting, amazing & wonderful to witness. as i watch BAI peeling her bamboo to get to the yummy inside i’m thinking maybe a bit of TAPATIO would spice that up just right. or perhaps considering her mother country a nice robust SOY SAUCE. i’ll just hop on the GOLD LINE into chinatown; pick up a savory SOY SAUCE & hitch a ride on AMTRAK heading south with the goods. i’m on my way BAI! no more tasteless meals for you! December 17th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
What is Baby playing with outside? It looks like a bag of some sort.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
Yunior is being too cute. You can “bearly” see him in all the foliage but it appears he’s on his back again.. little back paws waving around and he’s playing with a piece of bark or leaf…. He’s sooo easily amused…
December 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Oh my goodness – look at him outside walking around like a BIG guy – he appears to be doing really well! He is just so different from the girls in his ways!! Love him!
December 17th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Watching Yunior explore his world today from the den,to the bedroom & sunroom and its yard…..I have a question for the Panda team……Do Pandas share night vision with their Feline cousins? The reason I ask is it seems that Yunior does a lot of exploring at night and I got curious about Panda’s night Vision capabilities….Thank-You SDZ for helping us GPF’s get educated on Pandas…

Hi everyone…I know this is not a computer classroom, but Dennis #116…how do you use the multiple tabs on Internet Explorer. I have tried to get my computer to show my panda cam while writing a comment or something and I don’t know how to do it. I have Vista. I also have the sidebar that I have and I use that for the Panda Cam. I have 3 cams on that just so I don’t miss the panda action. They are all on SDZ watching the pandas. I have been watching Yun Zi and I have to admit, I am not one that thinks it’s cute when he falls off of things. I hold my breath when he’s trying to get down from the scale or whatever he is on. It just makes my heart hurt for him. I do know he is well padded, but I’m still not used to it after watching 5 or so cubs. Thanks for your help Dennis and I hope Lynn is doing better today.

December 17th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Does anybody know why there is no Bamboo in the den? Its totally bare floor. Did keepers clean it out or did Bai?
Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to the Panda Team.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I think maybe they took the bamboo out in order to give His Royal “Robustness”, otherwise known as Yun Zi The Great, a not so subtle hint that it is time to move out
December 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I too wondered about the bamboo but then I realized it’s been in there for a long time and no doubt needed refreshing and we know Bai Yun loves to drag in the boo so no doubt the floors won’t be bare for long. I think now that YunYun is a furry little panda he doesn’t really need the padding anyway. I log in first thing in the morning EST time so it’s about 2:30 am SDZ time and Bai is always there with him, usually with him in her arms so no need to worry about him being cozy..he’s got a nice ‘big’ pillow
December 17th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Why has all the bamboo been removed from the den? Are the keepers trying to force Yun Zi out into the open before he is ready? Poor little guy. He looks sad lying on the hard floor with no boo to play with or comfort him in sleep. Why not just give him another few weeks until he is ready to be weaned off the den himself?
Moderator’s note: This question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

It been along time since Ive been able to write on any of the blogs, but I had a moment to write Hello to all you panda fans
bai Yun when she is making up her nest for her and Yun Zi , I feel like she saying yes Im making my nest a 800 thread count for her and her cubbie

Yun /////////Zi cracks me up when he wakes up and lays there like a human baby and plays on his back. It is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!!! I miss them so much being here in Seattle.I am glad I live on the West coast though
I want to wish everyone A Happy Holliday and a Happy New Year!!!!!!!!!! Untill we meet again so long.
December 17th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
I feel exactly the same, Debi #137, why rush him out? He’s happy in his safe nursery. Why rush him? I don’t want him to grow up faster than he needs to, he’ll be outside forever after anyway. Look at the little guy? He looks cold and everyone’s pushing him to go out and be much colder. I know it’s life, but can’t cha bend the rules a little?
Sweet little munchkin….
December 17th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
p.s. What if he won’t go out now that the boo is gone…are ya gonna lock the door behind him?? That’s when I won’t be able to watch anymore!!! That would be inhuman, and I just KNOW SDZ wouldn’t do that…….?
December 17th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
Little mans den is a bit too clean. There’s no padding on the bottom of the den.. ??
December 17th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Thanks for all the computer advice…..I’ll try Yahoo or ask the next person that walks in the door on how to zoom. I always thought the photos were too small and wanted to see them enlarged.
I am using Vista on a laptop.
AOl 9.0
I feel for the boy not having a better bed. Perhaps they don’t want him to stay in the den and play with bamboo! That they want him out and about to learn to play with other things.
Thank you DoxieMom because without you I would miss all the fun stuff……you are the first thing I check out every night to see if you have added new stuff!

Yun Yun means “cloud cloud”. The tune of the second word will change a bit when two identical words are put together. It creats a really cute and beautiful prounciation.

Got my adoption kit today. Now I feel like an “Auntie” to our little Yun Zi. The info is great, the picture is adorable and I love the plush animal. It has a ribbon with Yun Zi name on it and is so soft. Also I requested a gift message and it was handwritten. What a nice touch. Thank you so much. I’m really thinking of getting that tattoo one day.My right ankle has an empty space….Bai Yun & Yun Zi together…. it’s a thought.
Have a great holiday,SDZ & Pandaholics!
Moderator’s note: Thank you for helping pandas through your adoption!
December 18th, 2009 at 4:24 am
Bai and Yunior are up and playing 7:33 Ohio time… I don’t know how long they’ve been playing.. I just checked before I left for work… I saw Bai laying on her back, feet up in the air and Yunior chewing on her foreleg. Bai is so good… I bet she was a cute cub…..Any pictures of her when she was a baby?
December 18th, 2009 at 4:48 am
Oh what fun this morning! I joined in at 4:15am panda time. Bai Yun is sound asleep in the den but Yun Zi is wide awake and wants to play! He finally woke her up…she’s tossing him around with her feet…doesn’t look like he’s wearing out yet! Poor Bai Yun tried to go back to sleep with a huge yawn, but Yun Zi just won’t let her, so she left the den with Yun Zi right behind her!
December 18th, 2009 at 6:53 am
LOL Who brought the boo back? I tried to see on the Panda Time Lapse video but it didn’t seem to cover that time period. Was Bai busy all night reshredding new boo to comfort her little boy? He really loves his den. I have a feeling this is going to carry out into his adulthood and we will see a male bear who loves to snuggle in tight places. He even likes hiding and sleeping under bushes when he is out. He likes to be snug and it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Bai, because most of the time she is not with him. He just likes close quarters! If he were female what a great Mom he would make in the future. He has Denning 101 down perfectly!

We don’t know how the cub feels about the carpet, but we can say that he often has limited patience with the cub exams. Once roused, he seems anxious not to be held or poked or prodded. He has already bitten a keeper (non-injurously, his teeth aren’t very dangerous at this stage) at one exam to let folks know he wants to be released. As a result of this, you will find the exams will be getting shorter and shorter, and in January they will also decrease in frequency. The time of easy handling of a passive panda baby are at an end…and this feisty youngster is ready to move on to bigger and better things!
December 18th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
I am watching our little man chewing/mouthing on a rather long large piece of bamboo right now.
Question…………….
Is he doing this because it’s the right time and age for him to be doing so?, or,
because he’s teething? Another reason perhaps?, or all of the above?
He seems to be really enjoying it. TYSVM SDZ!!!
Moderator’s note: He’s got all of those teeth, so we would expect him to start experimenting with them.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I really think there is something wrong with our “BOY”. I can see that Bai sort of knows and protects him the best she can by using the bamboo to keep him in. He just is not acting right and it makes me very sad to see this. He is having trouble of some kind and I surely hope it will be determined and maybe there is something that can be done for him. I would be glad to say I was wrong if I turn out to be so but I have a gut feeling that there is something not right with our “Boy”.
Moderator’s note: Please remember the vets check on him weekly and have not found any reasons to be concerned. Just enjoy watching him grow and explore.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
What a big guy! So why is he being so sheltered from the public? All four of Bai’s earlier cubs were out before Christmas.
Moderator’s note: Please trust our Panda Team to make the decision that is best for Yun Zi.
December 18th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Look at our little precious baby biting his boo happily. PRICELESS!!!
December 18th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
I don’t think anything is wrong with Yun Zi, I do think however that Bai Yun is being far more protective of this cub than her others and no doubt he is responding to that. I watch the cam daily and during the night and there have been many times he’s wanted to go out and play and she wouldn’t allow it. She pulls him right back in and keeps her paw on his back as if to say ’stay here’. The first time she took him out to the classroom, she did the very same thing – she put him down and then immediately put her paw on his back like she was saying ‘look around’ but don’t think about running around and then she waited a few minutes and pick him right back up and take him back to the den. Several times he’s escaped the den and she’d leave and immediately come back with him in her mouth and hold him down so I dont’ think it’s his lack of curiousity as much as listening to his mother. Hua Mei didn’t go out to the public until she was 6 months old and other people have said she was quite protective of her as well. And really if your mom was a 200 pound panda, would you want to disobey her? Hehe..just kidding!
He’s definitely curious, he plays on his own quite a bit, he’s strenghtening his muscles daily and he seems to be enjoying cutting his teeth on bamboo. Please don’t worry about him, SDZ is one of the best zoos in the US and they have helped Bai Yun raise 4 other cubs who are now flourishing and I trust had anything been ‘wrong’, they’d have adressed it by now.
December 18th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
I usually don’t comment on how any baby panda is progressing-I’m FAR from a panda expert and all we see is what’s on a tiny screen-but Yun Zi seems to me to be progressing just fine. I’ve watched all his siblings starting with Mei Sheng as well as Tai Shan and Xi Lan and I truly don’t see much difference except for one thing and that one thing is pretty important in deciding on his debut. This baby panda seems to be a real night owl! I check in during the day and he’s sleeping. I check in on him at 4 in the morning panda time and he’s running around the den trying to wake Bai Yun…he finally succeeds in getting Bai Yun to toss him around for 15 minutes, then runs after her out of the den when she leaves…then back in for a nurse and more play! I think we can all agree a growing boy needs his sleep and I don’t think any of us want the keepers to wake him up just to drag him out on exhibit because he chooses to sleep when the zoo is open. He’ll be awake during the day often enough soon enough that his fans will get to see him in person. Until then we’ll just have to enjoy him doing headstands (he did a LOVELY one this morning) in the middle of the night!
December 18th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Hi,
Any updates on his debut yet? I’ve already booked a trip to SDZ for next month and hope that he will be out by then as all of the previous cubs were out between Christmas and New Year. Hope he’s going to make it by then…..
Moderator’s note: No updates yet…
December 18th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
I read all the entrys regarding YunZi, Bai Yun, and all the pandas. But when I read #150, my heart sank and to be honest, I too have wondered the same thing. With that said, I do trust the Panda Team, therefore, I continue to enjoy watching our little man “grow and explore.” I look forward each day hoping to see a big breakthrough with him…..he is so precious……………
December 18th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
#150 -Connie in South Dakota – Connie – don’t understand why you are so upset about Yun Zi – he is the 6th panda that I’ve watched & he seems fine to me
Don’t forget it’s mom who decides when & where he goes for a while yet
If you’ve watched any of Doxie Mom’s videos he’s been all over & survived his first fall onto his head –
Baby pandas are like our kids (or for me grandkids) Our only grandson didn’t start crawling until he was almost 13 months ( his 5 cousins much earlier) but then after a week of crawling he didn’t just walk he ran & has never stopped since
All babies are different – please don’t worry
December 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
#151 -panda lover – it’s not Christmas yet – Bai has another week to decide if she wants Yun Zi out on exhibit
December 18th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
To Kathy/Canada, # 153..
Your reasoning makes sense to me. ….The little one is just 4 months and approx. 15 days old.
He is still young and has accomplished much in his short life.
Bai Yun has natural instincts and seems to know what she is doing in her actions as a mother Panda.
The highly educated Staff ( of the SDZ ), who have the Pandas in their care ; are doing a superb job monitoring Bai Yun and Yun Zi. I am certain Yun Zi will meet the public when the time is right.
We have been fortunate that the zoo has shared the day by day experiences of the Pandas with all of us.
They have taught us so much, for that I am ever grateful.
We all march to a different drummer….and this is what makes the world such a wonderful place!
December 18th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
I have full confidence in SDZ and it’s wonderful keepers. They know what they are doing and we all have no need to worry. I KNOW all the Moms can remember that ALL babies progress at their own pace, including Panda babies! They do not come out of a cookie cutter. Why is everone so worried? He will come explore when he is ready! Let’s just enjoy the moment shall we? I doubt that SDZ is “rushing” the little guy out. I truely believe that the welfare of the animals come first and when they tell us there is nothing to worry about, we should listen, because SDZ rocks! Good night adorable little man.
December 19th, 2009 at 1:02 am
#150 Connie, I agree with everyone else, Yun Zi is fine. As Maureen #157 said, all babies are different; we thought our daughter was ‘behind’ everyone else when she was a baby but she just didn’t bother with the crawling phase (too much effort!) and then, refused to come out of nappies until she was nearly 5 years old! But, she ignored the potty phase totally – from nappies to none overnight. We’ve come to realise that she does things when she wants to. Same with Yun Zi, he will do things at his own pace and from what I can see, he is doing just beautifully. He’s a little loveable little tyke! So don’t worry Connie, he’s surrounded by experts who would know if something isn’t right.
December 19th, 2009 at 10:14 am
#150 Connie from South Dakota
Yun Zi is a normal panda cub. Anyone who has ever spent any time around animals or children would know what a baby anything acts like. They act like babies, then they grow up in due time. I trust that the zoo keepers and vets know what they are doing, seeing that they are educated and trained experts with animals, and pandas and panda cubs.
December 19th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Good afternoon, panda fans and not so panda fans. Yun Zi here, letting you know all is well with me. First, let me refer you to the milestones chart. You will note that my development is better than my bother and sisters. You will also note, that I am outside playing today. I rest on the weekdays, and I party (play) on the weekends, like a lot of Americans.
I feel like I am a star now. I guess one of the hazards :O of stardom is having critics. I wonder if Miley goes through this. I need a publicist.
December 19th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Alert the media, 1730 EST and Chubbie Cubbie (aka Yun Zi) is outside. Ya Hoo ! He does things at his own pace, he is his own little man.
December 19th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Dear Dependable Moderator,
Am I missing something? Please correct me if you believe my thinking is wrong in some way when it comes to pandas. Why does everyone seem concerned about Yun Zi’s development all of a sudden? I’ve always thought the Milestone page was just to give us an idea of approximately when to expect a particular event to happen. Truthfully, I’ve always disliked developmental “timetables”, even when I was a mom of a small child myself. Now, before anyone “assumes” that I must have been against them because my child was slow; let me assure you, my child was VERY gifted, thank God. At the age of 4 her performance equaled that of a child of 10 or 11. I had her professionally tested to confirm my beliefs in order to place her in the correct school that could accommodate her needs. I never shared this information with anyone except on a few occasions when it was necessary for school purposes. I would NOT allow the school to keep a copy of her testing in their files, NOR did I even share the results with my own family. I despise the commonly heard phrase “well MY child…” I therefore kept my business to myself and taught my daughter that God grants ALL people gifts, that we all develop in our own time. It is the different varieties of flowers and varying blooming times that make the most beautiful gardens.
I believe pandas are like children and they all develop in their own ways in their own time. Just like with human children, I don’t think we need to lock them into some sort of schedule or competition. God created them, let his gifts develop according to his plan, not ours. Needless to say, I sincerely trust with all my heart that the professionals at the SDZ would spot a problem from a mile away and would help our little miracle quicker than any of us could even pronounce what was wrong, God forbid.
Love, hugs and kisses to all our pandas; thank you to all SDZ personel; and a special big kiss and cuddly hug to my adopted son, Yun Si. I love you baby!!!
December 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
I also believe that Yun Zi is just fine. I have worked around animals and owned pets, and every single one is different, just like human children. Some progress at a faster rate, some slower. Yun Zi is much like my kittens were. Play hard and sleep hard. It seemed like just when they were getting going, they would zonk out for hours on end. And they were perfectly healthy. They also sleep a lot when they are growing. He is healthy, well fed, well loved. Bai is doing the bear thing. Remember, Panda bears live solitary lives and no better time than now for him to start learning this. See how well he entertains himself with playing in his den, walking around exploring, mouthing boo, shaking boo, teething boo? He is having the time of his life! Don’t they nurse until they are 18 months or something? He has a very long way to go! He is just a baby…don’t let his size fool you. And again, I believe this is going to be his personality, which is probably going to make him very unique and a lot of fun to watch. Playful, mellow, cuddly, loving snugs places, hiding under bushes. He has grand plans for his life…he is dreaming about them now!
December 19th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Hi All, At this age, how often now does Bai feed him??? I don’t see him eating much these days, unless he is while I’m sleeping…………LOL. TYSVM………..
Panda Team responds: No one is watching them around the clock at this time, but it would be fair to estimate that Bai Yun is probably feeding Yun Zi two to five times daily. By the end of their association at 18 months, this will drop to about 1 time per day.
December 19th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
I agree with everyone too. Our little chubbie is fine, he is safe and content to play in his den and goes out when he wants to explore. He is staying up and out for longer periods of time when he finally gets up and goes. What a little cutie pie. I have every confidence in the SDZ staff. I did not know he bit one of the keepers already! Oh my, what a feisty bugger. Just goes to show who the boss really is, I can see why they do not go in with the adult bears. Wild animals are unpredictable no matter how cute and cuddly they look. I am enjoying this phase he is in and I am in no hurry for him to go out and about, I don’t think we will see him as often once he does. Mommy Bai knows what is best for her little cub muffin and she does a wonderful job with him. I only wish I could sleep the way he does, maybe I would spend less time watching him!
December 19th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
After being kind of busy with daily stuff, I haven’t been able to watch as much as I usually do, in the last day…soooooo, it’s so nice to see momma and little cloud sleeping together tonight…with boo on the floor of the nursery. Nice and cozy. Just prior, ma went out, then wandered back in, laid down with cloud, he moved himself away just a few inches, flopped over on his side into sleep. So precious. There they both lay, together, sweetness.
Wishing it could be this way forever.
December 20th, 2009 at 8:23 am
Goodmorning all, I always rush to the computer in the mornings to see Yun Zi. He is so beautiful. I feel like I have a panda son. I am enjoying watching Yun Zi grow up. Yun Zi is a blessed panda. There is nothing for people to fear. He is in a loving environment. He has loving keepers and staff looking after him. He has a loving experienced mother. I am so proud of Yun Zi. I could not be any prouder. He is a perfect panda boy. It is a distance to California. But by the Grace of God, we are going to plan a vacation to see Yun Zi in person when he gets older. I will be the one blowing kisses at him.
December 20th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
Of course, I, like everyone else, is a very proud auntie….just spent a lot of time watching older videos of his past exams, what a journey so far for Little Cloud. What a doll baby. I don’t know about everyone else here, but I think that’s why I want to reach down into the nursery and just pick him up and hold him while he sleeps softly. He’s the doll baby we all want to hold and cuddle and kiss. I just ache to feel his furry little body, like the keepers and vets. They are so darn lucky to have such fulfilling positions, and I know they worked their tushes off to get to where they are at the SDZ. I am so glad there is boo in the nursery again, Cloud looked ever so cold without it beneath him, I’m not sure if Ma or keepers replenished it, but thank you, whomever did….thinking it’s Ma…
Nite, Little Cloud, sweet, sweet dreams, munchkin.
December 21st, 2009 at 10:11 pm
This little munchin has his own schedule. I wonder when he will decide to leave the comfort and security of the den? He is being himself and I am happy that the SDZ feels confident enough to allow both mom and cub to do their thing even if it means delaying public debut. What makes this cub different from theprevious cubs? It appears that he doesn’t want to be the same as his siblings, but wants to be known for himself. Go Yun Zi be yourself! I love you.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:17 am
I just saw Yun trying to go outside so early in the morning. Bai Yun was trying to keep him in…she even had his hind foot in her mouth while she was laying down trying to rest…well, it did look like they might be playing.. then Yun got away from her finally and out he went… and there went mama right after him. He’s gonna keep mama busy now with his little sweet self doing what he wants to do, and when he wants to do it!!
I love watching them play.
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:20 am
At about 8:16 (camera time) Yun Zi was trying to get a drink or at least that’s what it looked like, but he couldn’t reach the water. How does he get water then?
Moderator’s note: Mom’s milk is all the liquid he needs right now.
