Yun Zi Takes on the World?

Posted at 10:20 am December 14, 2009 by Suzanne Hall

I just checked in on Yun Zi this morning and found him snuggled up in his den, sleeping soundly. Bai Yun is off on her own, enjoying her breakfast in her classroom area. Here we are in the middle of December, and our littlest panda seems blissfully unaware that our data indicates that panda cubs are beginning to spend more time outside of the den by the time they are his age, 131 days old. But then again, I am not sure that Yun Zi has read our notes on the matter.

By week 18 of life, Zhen Zhen was out of the den much of the time. Under her own power, she began crawling out of the den and exploring the adjacent bedroom area. She rested frequently outside the den. And by her 19th week she was walking clumsily all over the place, following Bai Yun in the tunnels at times. When the time came for her pre-Christmas debut on exhibit, she walked her fuzzy little self all the way through our tunnels and put herself out there for the world to see. Even Mei Sheng was cruising around a lot by week 19!

But individual variation can confound the results of any good study. This is why a large sample size is important in research! We cannot simply take our cues from one or two animals and make a broad statement about every other in the population. In this case, Yun Zi is showing us that, although he is closely related to Zhen Zhen and Mei Sheng, and his rearing environment and protocol have been the same, and Bai Yun has been the same excellent mother she has been in the past… still, Yun Zi is his own little panda, with his own time line for development.

And so we wait patiently for the “aha” moment, when Yun Zi decides it is time to tackle his world. Although he has spent some time outside the den, staff is unanimous in the conclusion that this little boy is moving ahead very slowly when compared to his siblings. Over the weekend, Yun Zi spent some time exploring his exhibit. If this trend holds, he may be making up for lost time with respect to his siblings. Soon enough, he will be climbing trees, stealing bamboo from his mother, and exploring his exhibit’s every nook and cranny. But for now, he is content to remain safely ensconced in his den. It takes a lot of energy to grow big and fluffy, you know. Apparently, he will not be disturbed in this effort.

How old is Bai Yun and how many days old is Yun Zi?

Moderator’s note: Bai Yun turned 18 in September. Yun Zi is 131 days old today. You can get this info and more on our Meet the Pandas page.

  2. Carol L. says:

Yunior has his own set of notes and knows he doesn’t have to follow anyone else’s but his own. I would love for him to be on exhibit for everybody even though I’m way out on the east coast near Tai-land, but I quite happy for the denning phase to last as long as he wants it. Once outside and really motoring he may be hard to see if he’s anything like Su Lin and her trees. I can’t wait for the handy-stands and somersaults though.

  3. Michelle from Buffalo, NY says:

I thought it seemed like he wasn’t really interested in getting out of the den. He walks all over the place when he’s out on the mat/floor for his exams but once he’s back in the den he seems content to just be there. I was thinking maybe it is a male thing? Girls are raring to go and boys are more mellow?

  4. Meegan Bryan says:

I love the video mom and baby too cute. Yun Zi has taken over the world in my view.

  5. Shirley Ann says:

Yun Zi is like a dog with a bone with Bai Yun – they roll around like two kids. Very funny to watch them. Thanks Doxie Mom – very entertaining. I guess the reason Yun Zi sleeps a lot is that when he plays he really plays hard and need all that rest to be able to play again.

    Thanks,

    Shirley

  6. Melissa says:

Thank you for the update, Suzanne!

Yun Zi has been a laid-back lad since the beginning. I marvel at how animals have distinctly different personalities and ways of doing things. I’m glad he’s cared for by an excellent panda mom and a staff of dedicated and caring humans who are patient with him and allow him to progress at his own pace as he seems to enjoy being a “homebody” right now. It somehow reminds me of Gao’s reluctance to return to the bamboo forests. He kept returning to the safety of life with human caretakers much as Yun Zi keeps returning to the safe, cozy confines of the den.

Thanks to everyone who takes such good care of Yun Zi and all of the SDZ panda family!

  7. Margaret says:

Yun Zi is letting everyone know, not just Kathy Hawk, that he is his own “man” and has a mind of his own that he will exercise as he chooses. His play time outside yesterday was priceless. Hopefully this week he will choose to do more of it. For now the warm cozy den is a hard place to beat for having long naps to grow big and strong. He is getting his feet under him and can obviously move around if he wants, but for whatever his reasons he chooses not to do so. The fact that Bai Yun is happy to go by herself into the classroom area and dine in peace is an indication that all is according to nature and that she is not concerned. She is ready to start panda kindergarten outside as she demonstrated yesterday as soon as “his highness” chooses to join her. If she really wanted him out there, she would drag him, like she did with Zhen Zhen when she wanted her cub to do something the cub was reluctant to do. Maybe Panda Claws needs to tempt him out with some Christmas toy or enticing scent.

Dear DoxieMom, Many thanks for posting that video of Bai and Yun Zi playing. I really enjoyed watching their interaction.

  9. Sandra says:

Yun Zi will develop into the perfect panda at his own pace. I think it is wonderful that he is content to remain in the den. In my opinion they grow up way too fast!!!

  10. Cheryl says:

DoxieMom, this is a great video!! So glad to see Yun Zi and mom playing so hard! I was very worried about our little boy this weekend. Nothing to worry about there. He is very rambunctious! Too cute. :-)

  11. Felicia says:

Our little boy is a home body! I miss him when he’s not in the den. I cherish these moments always. Thank you SDZ for bringing such joy into my life and many others too! And many thanks to DoxieMom for highlighting all the moments for us to enjoy!!

My wife and I live near Sacramento and have been following his development through the webcam. We hope to see him out on exhibit when we come to the Zoo on December 22 and 23.

  14. Shirley Williamson says:

The Video of the two of them playing is adorable.

  15. Houston says:

Lots of really good back-leg exercise for Yun Zi in this play session (thanks for the video). They’re definitely starting to exhibit typical panda rough-n-tumble.

I love how Bai Yun uses her legs with him : balancing him up in the air over her on her paws (esp. those back ones) and sometimes just rolls him around and over and around … just like the little furball that he is.

Yun Zi does want to “do it his way” – everything from how they play to when/how he explores the world.

  16. JEAN says:

I love to watch the play between Bai Yun and Yun Zi, they seem to really play rough with each other. I would like to know how DoxieMom gets these pictures and we can’t, although I’m very grateful for them. He is growing fast enough, and although it would be nice to see him running around, it is also nice to watch him play with his feet.

  17. doreen in virginia says:

to doxie mom, i saw sundays video, it was so awesome. i figured you must have dachsunds. i saw a car with the license plate as ‘doxiemom; when i was going home from my daughters house , and thought of you, by any chance are you from richmond v.a.?

  18. Helen says:

Thank you so much for posting this. It is so lovely to see mum and son playing. thanks

  19. rose from San Diego says:

Doxie Mom, thank you for recording this video!! How sweet are they? I can hardly wait to watch him in person…thanks for the update.

  20. Carol D. in Kalamazoo, MI says:

Thank you DoxieMom for the great video! After watching a play session like that you can understand Yun Zi wanting to catch some rest in the den. I just think with that big tummy of his, it is taking alittle longer to get those back legs really going. He melts my heart! Thank you SDZ for teaching all of us so much.

  21. kat w says:

Would YOU want to go out there? Baby, it’s COLD outside, maybe colder than other Decembers for little cloud’s sibs. In a way, it’s kind of nice that he’s still tucked inside the den, otherwise, it is hard to see him outside behind the bushes and trunks. I need my fix and it was frustrating this weekend when he ventured out…except it was sweet watching baby and mommy play together….what darlings….

Do just what you are doing, little cloud, as always, keep making us proud!

    love and kisses.

  22. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

“it takes a lot of energy to grow big and fluffy you know”. hahahahahahaha. thanks for my first good laugh of the day.

  23. Marie says:

OMG that video by Doxiemom is just TOO CUTE for words! I LOVE how she’s rolling around all over with him. So sweet. The beauty and innocence of these animals is an amazing thing to watch. Thanks SDZ for the giving us a chance to witness this and thanks Doxiemom for recording it. :)

  24. Lee in Vancouver says:

Now we know why Yun Zi is heavy than his siblings. Once he starts walking the weight gain slows down. Well it did for my daughter anyways.

Bai is just thankful because he is giving her more “me” time. She knows what will happen once Yun Zi starts bugging her all the time.

  25. maryellen in fla says:

Hello Moderator, you mentioned that a new Panda Cam is not in the budget this year. I’m just curious to know how much they cost. Why couldn’t we Panda fans/cam fans put some cash in a kitty and save until you have enough to buy a new one? Of course if it winds to be too much we can just send in our usual.

  26. Esther says:

I saw this yesterday. I hope he gets going. I will be there in January and can’t wait to see him in real life

  27. Susan (UK) says:

I’m in no hurry for Yun Zi to grow up! Just like human babies/children, they seem to grow and mature at different ages. He’s just having fun. And enjoying every minute. He’s just super gorgeous.

  28. Anne in NYC says:

No wonder the poor little tyke was sleeping this morning! That was a pretty strenuous play bout with mom.

  29. Linda says:

Oh little cloud is perfect in every way! I don’t know why there is so much measuring and comparing and fretting over boy pandas versus girl pandas – okay, I understand why, but it just goes to show you that each panda is unique and there is never one standard for normal development. I say, let him be a baby panda for as long as his little panda heart desires – he will have plenty of time to be a big panda on his own when the time comes. What I find so interesting is that for a panda who will soon spend most of his life alone, our little Yunior seems so motivated through social interaction. He does seems to sleep an awful lot on his own, but really comes alive when interacting with mom or the keepers and vets. Although pandas are relatively solitary, I wonder how much they are actually aware and interacting in more subtle ways, within a social group, in their natural enivironment.

  30. Kris says:

I am with Margaret (#7) on this one. I was fortunate enough to witness some of the play time and it was, indeed, priceless!! Love watching Bai interact with her babies. She is just the best mama. Love her! :)

  31. Beverley says:

After reading the blog on how laid back Yun Zi is compared with Zhen Zhen I watched the video of
Bai Yun and Yun Zi and he was certainly very energetic during his playtime with his mother. This indicates to me that we will soon see him out on exhibit with his great mother. It is a great joy to watch him grow
and always look forward each day to tuning in to San Diego pandacam

  32. Melissa says:

I just watched the 14th exam video several more times. There is a point when Dr. Pye is trying to place the tape measure around Yun’s neck and YZ lets out a squawk that reminds me of…Miss Piggy! It’s adorable and gives me a much-needed laugh. He’s sweet beyond measure!

His nosepad is black now (maybe dark gray in the very middle) so he has left all vestiges of butterstick pink behind! He’s such a fluffy one!

  33. Pat says:

Awwwww, thank you for the info and update Suzanne. I’m glad that YunZi, our little man, is taking as much time as he wants too before he makes his big debut. I will miss watching him in the den, but I know this must and will come to an end soon. I remember ZZ seeming most anxious to explore, unlike her little brother. But they only stay young/small once…………maybe he knows this and wants to give us all that little extra……LOL……

  34. Carol (the other one) says:

I was lucky enough to see the play session live, but am so happy that DoxieMom captured it for those who missed it. He seemed pretty energetic once Bai hauled him out of the ferns and put him back on camera! I believe he followed her back to the sunroom, too. Very, very cute to see and, if he wants to nap in the cozy den a lot, well, good for him!

And, Happy Hanukkah to all the pandas’ Jewish fans!

  35. Gabrielle says:

You know, how in human families the youngest boy is usually the chubbiest, the mommy’s boy, and the baby of the family all of his life. I bet it is the same in panda families as well. I like Yun Zi’s chubbiness and his mommy’s boy attitude. I am sure he will always be Bai Yun’s baby boy, even when he is older.

  36. maryellen in fla says:

apnews.myway.com/article/20091214/D9CJ29PG0.html I just found this article on Giant Pandas and why they only eat bamboo. I think it makes sense if there taste buds are unable to taste other foods why they would shy away from them.

  37. Jan in Richmond, VA says:

It’s obvious that the den is serving as his “blankee” and he is just not ready to give it up yet. In two months, we will all be complaining that we can’t see him because he is always up in a tree.

  38. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

Thanks Doxiemom, I enjoyed the video of Bai Yun and Yun Zi playing. Yun Zi is just tired from playing so much and needs his sleep. But one day soon he will be out playing and following mom around.

  39. Bobbie Wood says:

Watching Doximom’s great videos of the teaching sessions this past weekend, I fully thought Yun Zi would be making an appearance very soon. Then, today, he’s been very content to remain in the den. Hmmmm what to think now? I’m back to my after the new year projection. :) Great update, Susanne. I too loved the ‘big and fluffy..’ comment :)

  40. Aunt Nancy says:

This is THE CUTEST video! Bai is so loving, and encouraging to Yunior.

  41. Telly26 says:

If watching THIS doesn’t make one smile, nothin’ will. This is theeeee cutest. Thank you for this. : )

  42. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

I just watched the video and decided its the best one yet!
I felt this surge of love that Bai Yun has for him. Playing with him you can tell just how much she loves him. I think mother’s always have more feelings for their sons.
Its sad that she can’t interact wth her other older cubs….I wonder if she remembers them being hers and playing with them when they were younger? Do they see each other thru the fences?
I can’t imagine her being separated from this little one as he grows up.

  43. Chari Mercier says:

Hi! Very nice video of Bai and Yuni having their play time! Being as small as Yuni is, he is getting alot of action trying to climb on his mom and getting alot of little bites on her thick fur. Loved the way that Bai finally reached over her head, grabbed Yuni by the neck, put him on her chest, and then started to twirl him around a couple of times! That was fun to watch! Thanks, Doxiemom—AGAIN!!
From reading this update, Yuni has made up his mind about how his own time frame for development and milestones will be coming up! He’s got his own panda personality, he’s thinking for his own panda self, and before long he will let everyone who he really is as he continues to grow up. We may be seeing another Mei Sheng or Gao Gao if Yuni tends to take after one or both of those 2 pandas!
I did see Yuni on the pandacam, and he was just starting to wake up from a nap. He does love his nap times, doesn’t he? YEP!!
Gonna go for now. Will check back in later on!

that is it …he fell off the table…she left him and down he went…this is as hard as watching my grandchildren trying to walk and fall…cannot believe that…aaahhh eeeeekkkk

  45. Jane,SD says:

Well, perhaps the little panda has decided to move. I opened up the ppanda cam, and saw the little one do a flip off of the platform in Bai ’s bedroom. Oops.

  46. Frances in NYC says:

Our big boy got down from the scale in Bai’s bedroom and over the ledge all by himself! Wait for me, Mom!!!

  47. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Ahhhh, he wants to get out and the door to the sun room is shut…..
Now he seems to want to go out on his own!

  48. KPanda says:

I can’t blame the poor little guy for being tired. She plays HARD with him and she plays with him a lot. I don’t remember her playing with the girls quite so vigorously or as early as she started to teach him to play.

  49. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

okay, door opened, momma went out and door shut to leave him inside…..why?
Also he has been trying to climb up on platform….that must be a first….just a bit too short to make it at this point…..

  50. Dorothy Bain says:

It seems that every time you think that is the cutest yet, he just gets cuter. It was beautiful watching mom and junior together and funny at the same time. I can’t wait for each exam and hope he gives us a Christmas present of being outside on exhibit.

  51. Marilyn says:

I don’t know about San Diego but Los Angeles has been much colder than usual even during this time of year. If I were a young cub, I too would prefer to stay in the warm den.

    Debbie, thank you, again! :)

  53. Gabrielle says:

I am grateful to the Lord that the Yun Zi is okay after that fall. He is a blessing. He makes people happy in a hard world. Little panda boy, Yun Zi, is protected forever.

  54. Burkie says:

Is it true that Bai Yun is too old to have another cub in 2011?

Moderator’s note: We’ll have to see!

  55. Alice from San Diego says:

Loved the video, such fun to see the interaction during their playtime! She is such a good Moma Panda. Saw Jr. take a nose dive off the ledge he was on, he wanted to follow mom and he went head over heels…too cute

  56. Jonesin says:

I watched him for a good 20 min around noon time (eastern) and he nearly left the den. I just happened to check in before closing down for the day, and lo, the little bugger is outside the den! Enjoying some bamboo with mama! I took a screen grab of the moment, not sure how to submit it.

  57. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Last week I would have agreed with Marilyn #51 about it being cold and the cub in the den. Now its warming up and around the end of the week its suppose to be about 70 along the coast. Nights in the 40’s andf 50’s…..and no rain…..mud will dry up!!

  58. Marti from California says:

The cutest little boy in the world is growing to fast. How cute was he sitting in the entrance like a big boy watching the world go by today. Not a care in the world. He’s very smart, he know that he has a very large fan club watching him every day.

Maybe Bai Yun and Yun Zi have a secret, since this is her last baby she told him in panda talk of course to not grow up so fast. She wants him to stay a baby for a little longer then the other babies, I don’t blame her.

Was he nawing on a little peice of bambo? Can he digest it? It was so cute to watch. He is going to be the reason I get fired from my job.

Is the greenery/shrubs in the Classroom new plantings or just old stuff that has grown in the last couple on months? It looks nice and lush for little Yun Zi to play with or attack.

Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to our Panda Team.

  61. kat w says:

Little cloud has been out a lot today with ma, roaming around in the boo, nursing when she’ll let him. He’s doing great. Please don’t tell baby he’s a little behind the others….that’s how kids get a complex! I’m just a little worried he’s too young to be eating boo, can’t he choke? I thought he should still be nursing only. Then again, momma isn’t always available, like she used to be.

Moderator’s note: He’s not eating it, just playing/mouthing it.

  62. Jane says:

Thank you for the lovely video of Bai and baby playing! It was just adorable!

  63. jeanneb says:

Well, that little baby boy is just bound and determined to steal my heart! There he is again, all curled up in his cozy little den. Thank you, Yunnie, for seeming to understand how we cherish these remaining days of you in your “baby bed”.

I saw the “tumble” off the table. More like a belly flop, except he landed right on his head! Seemed a little woozy, then off like a flash to tell Mommy what he had done.

What was the door-closing all about?

  64. Carole in San Diego says:

Surprising conclusions about Yun Zi’s comparative development. Having the advantage of numerous segments of the Pandacam video so graciously provided by DoxieMom, I recently concluded that he has engaged in the most vigorous play of any of the last four cubs at this age. He also has been following Bai Yun to the classroom under his own steam with no noticeable difficulty for more than a week as well as regularly exploring the rooms surrounding the den. I recall when Mei Sheng went on exhibit on December 19, 2003, at exactly 4 months, he had to be carried by the keepers to the classroom exhibit for several weeks. Each cub was provided with a covered nest which they retreated to for a nap while on exhibit and had access to the den for the 20 hours each day when not on exhibit.

  65. Lee from San Francisco says:

Come on, give this baby boy a break! Don’t you guys know that “boys” are late bloomers? :) :) :)

Go ahead honey, take as much time as you need. You will get there soon enough, and to everyone’s surprise.

  66. Britney says:

Yun Zi is one brave little boy. I am glad he is fine. Bai Yun, was trying to get some treats. Here is a story about Yun Zi and Bai Yun.

    Yun Zi
    Bai Yun

Bai Yun: hey, where’s the treats?
Yun Zi: hey mommy, what are you doing? (move move)
Bai Yun: (walks to table) Ahh i am just going to wait for some treats while i relax. (sit sit sit)
Yun Zi: oooo i want up on the table.
Bai Yun: (puts Yun Zi on table)
    Yun Zi: (walk walk walk)
Bai Yun: oooo maybe they will give me treats in the sunroom.
Yun Zi: (walk walk walk around) flip flip boom! I am coming mom!

  67. Panda in AZ says:

I love the cam and the videos. Thanks for the glimpse of our little star. He’ll be on his own before we know it. I hope he enjoys being watched in real once he is out on the exhibit. What a baby!!!!

  70. Laura from Il. says:

Yesterday (Sunday) I saw baby and mom outside for quite sometime in the classroom exhibit. They seemed to really having a good time…and this went on for quite awhile. They play really hard, must be the boy in him. He’s just tuckered out. Still enjoy watching this little guy, sleeping, playing, whatever he does, it’s a JOY to watch. As usual kisses for mama and baby!

I caught that playtime today. What a treat! Suzanne and Gabriel #35, you both made me laugh out loud. Thanks!

  73. Kay says:

Thank you, Suzanne, for the wonderful and funny update about Chubby Cubby. He is just a magnet. Is that ‘Babe Magnet?!” Maybe I sense it is Bai Yun’s last cub, because I’m so involved in reading the blog, watching the exams, watching the cam, watching Doxiemom’s videos. . . I’m not sure I did it as much with the other cubs except for the Princess Hua Mei. That is NOT to say I don’t love all those cubbies born between Hua Mei and Yunior. Thanks for all your efforts keeping us up to date!

  74. Brandy NY says:

Hi everybody. Well how lucky for Yunior to have so much love coming his way from so many places after seeing so many new bloggers or old bloogers coming back. Suzanne Hall as always a wonderful info. I had been along the lines of thinking that this little guy really rather stay in the den. Explore alittle here and there. I didn’t think a December outing was in the mist. But all of a sudden in the past couple days (as DoxieMom’s videos show) and what I saw today, I believe Bai is pushing his outing. I see her teaching him so many things she seemed to have put on hold yet now she is putting a hurry on it all. Shes cramed alot in, in just a couple of days. She is just incredible because he did accomplish a few new things, mainly staying out longer. She wanted him to stay out and the things he did shows she timed it just right. Gosh, Mother Nature never ceases to amaze us. When we think we know exactly whats happening a curb ball comes our way. I saw that today again. I tuned in at 1:45 pm SDZ time. They were out in I think the bed room and Yunior was on a table (I quess). I would imagine Bai put him up there. I don’t know how long they were out there before I tuned in. I am sure Doxiemom got it. Maybe even a 3 part. It was beautiful the fun they were having with each other. Then Bai took a drink of water and left the room. Poor YunZi left stuck on that table by himself. What an incredable sight to watch him try and get off that table that only a mother knew he could do and wanted him to do. He did. The rest you have to watch. My words will not do it justice. But folks, a few Milestones these past few days. Right Doxiemom! With so much a changing in our little guys developement you certainly have a fulltime job ahead. None of us can turn our heads for a minute. P- Wong please put a story to todays happenings:) :) :) I’ll start you off. “Mother Bai Says to Yun Zi, I am doing this because” Take it from there! Anyway at 3:30 he found his way bact to the den and fell asleep. I would think for a few days :) I am always amazed of what agreat mother Bai is. Best of all we get to watch her teach him. We are a lucky bunch.

Just got back from Adelaide Zoo (1130 am local time). we were outside the zoo by 7.45 am and only had to wait until 8 before they let us in to then queue in the panda line. You were able to walk past their indoor quarantine enclosure and you are only about 4 feet away from the Pandas. At first only Funi was on sight happily walking around and climbing/ falling off rocks. Quite the little princess and obviously enjoys the public. Funi actually wags her little tail which was kind of cute.

Wang Wang was just outside and being weighed and having a few treats – he took a few minutes to come inside and then promptly walked along the front of the enclosure then sat and off course ate boo!!

I didn’t get photos today mainly because you can’t use a flash and I wasn’t sure how to switch that off – so out comes the manual tonight. They were just exquisite to watch. Also the huge sound proofed glass windows between the pandas and the publis do not have non reflective glass – shame really
The indoor quarantine enclosure is set at 20 degrees celcius – so cool but not icy cold. Today in Adelaide it will be 36C and tomorrow 39C which is really hot.

A few tears were shed but it was everything that I expexted – and organised well by zoo staff and volunteers.
We go back again on Sunday morning. Of course we went to the panda shop and I bought a hand painted tile, a brooch, a cap, and 2 large badges with the pictures of the Pandas – oh dear I have it really bad.

Do you know if there is a cure for this disease?? if so please don’t tell me what it is

Please check out Adelaidenow.com.au and the Adelaide Zoo website – they have loads of pictures

Panda blessings and love from Adelaide to all of the GPF

  77. Diana S. says:

Thank you so much Suzanne for a wonderful post. It was a pleasure to read. Yun Zi is so content he is enjoying the denning phase as much as we are watching him! And DoxieMom thank you!!! That video is so much fun. Bai is so enjoying this little guy. I’ve watched it over and over. Ahhh. I needed them today. Thank you all.

  78. pandanuts says:

oh i guess maybe Bai Yun play him a lot, flipping tossing ,even when he is sleeping, so Yun Zi can not get enough sleep.

  79. Debi says:

This is definitely a perfect example of how each bear has their own personality and how early it begins to show. He loves playing with his Mommy and they seem to have such a loving relationship. Bai really enjoys her cub! And I think he is starting to get the fever to play outside, but he also has a good memory. Den means safety, where Mom will eventually look for him, warm, dark, quiet. He seems to love his den, playing with the boo, walking around, rolling around, examining the walls, investigating his back feet! He is a joy to watch. It will be interesting to see if he carries this into his adulthood. A bear who loves his bedroom and snuggly, close places! You may have to build him a small igloo like building to nap in!

  80. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

I’m also happy to see Yun Zi be a little slower in leaving the den – once they get outside all the time & find they can climb the trees you will be lucky to catch a glimpse every now & then. This is the fun age – waddling around, tgrying to climb on a branch or on mom, playing with whatever they find -in DoxieMom’s video it looked like Yuni found a leaf- I remember when Tai Shan was about this age the keepers gave him a pile of leaves to play with – he had more fun pouncing, mouthing, throwing them in the air. And once again to DoxieMom – thanks for capturing these heartwarming moments – to watch Bai play with her cub is so special :) And she is the one who wants to play :) Bai loves her cub :)

  81. Kathy Hacker says:

I WAS SO FOCUSED ON WATCHING THIS YESTERDAY THAT I FORGOT TO SEE IF THE COLTS WON!!!!! YUN ZI IS ALL BOY. I LOVE WATCHING HIM “ATTACK” BAI YUN AND THINKING THAT HE’S TOUGH STUFF. AFTER ALL THIS PLAY, IT WAS NO WONDER THAT HE TOOK SUCH A LONG NAP. IT IS SO AMAZING HOW GENTLE BAI YUN IS AS SHE PLAYS – SHE’S ONLY 200 POUNDS HEAVIER!!!!!! THANK YOU PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER FOR ALL OF US TO SEE.

  82. Lu Latimer says:

Thank you Doxiemom, what a enterdaing video, Interaction between mom and son was great.
I hope to see them this summer. I have really learned alot about the panda’s and now Im a big
    fan

  83. JudyK in Texas says:

This is such a treat to watch! What a journey we are all watching here. :D xoxo

  84. Lainie says:

How sweet… !! Thanx Dixiemom for sharing, and SDZ for posting the video !! I love watching Bai play with her cubs !! =)

  85. Deb says:

Yun Zi is his own widdle man, and he’ll do things his way and not by the schedule his brother and sisters followed. As has been pointed out a lot recently, Yunior has a ton of “attitude”! I think he wants to put his own unique stamp on the Yun-Gao family and not conform to behavior similar to his siblings. Although, it IS getting beyond crowded in that little den! If Yun Zi doesn’t move out of there soon, I think Mommy Bai will probably make the move for him, and I don’t think he’ll like it one bit!

  86. Mandi Maling says:

This is such a cute video i saw this on Monday.

  87. Linda says:

#36 Maryellen – Thanks to the link to the article about the panda taste receptors! How fascinating these pandas are! I was so excited, I downloaded the original article from Nature. Now if I can just read it…

And huge thanks to DoxieMom for posting all of these wonderful videos of *our* little Yunior! It is hard to capture all of the cuteness with just the still frames – I rest much easier now knowing that there is a good chance that when something really precious happens, DoxieMom probably caught it!

  88. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

Thank-You Suzanne for the information….Being a Night Owl I can tell you that Yunior does spend a lot of time outside of the den exploring along with Bai Yun ….I guess he will show the world that he is his own Panda Superstar and maybe he needs a red carpet and Pandarazzi taking flash pictures of him to get him in motion….LOL ;-) :-) ;-)

Well…Jan Cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia….Are you thrilled beyond words having seen the dubious duo on their first day on open exhibition? LOL….. Did you find out if they will help the rest of the GPF’s Worldwide and hopefully install Pandacams for us all to view them? :-) ;-) :-)

Lastly to The SDZ Staff and my growing GPF Family and Friends ,Lynn has shown a little improvement today as per her RN and they might start to bring her around slowly if she continues to show improvement in the blood clot dissolving, the Doctor’s only concern is due to the clot buster medications she is losing blood internally which is a by product of the medication….Hopefully we will be able to be together either at our apartment as we had to sell our house and furniture to pay outstanding medical bills for Christmas or at least get her moved back closer to another facility so I can visit…….

“Panda Peace on Earth, Goodwill to all Life on Earth! :-) ;-) :-)

  89. Diana from Riversid CA says:

Did anyone else see? He did a 360 off of Mom bed in her beroom. I watched her and she was testing him.
I felt bad for him but was a crack up!

  90. Rebeca in Encino says:

He’s my baby!!! I cannot be more in love!!! I was wondering… Doxie Mom, did you get the video of his tumble this afternoon? (By the way, thank you for all these wonderful videos!) I would love to see him climb to the platform, though I won’t love to see him fall, but I wanna see it nonetheless. Did they take him in to have him checked after his little fall?

  91. Widget says:

I have to laugh at the very beginning of the video of White Cloud and Son of Cloud playing. In the very beginning Bai moves and you see scambling in the back, poor little YunZi trying to roll over onto his belly. He has the hardest time getting himself over whenever he is stuck on his back. I have seen him many, many times, scambling, flailing about, trying to get himself over. So, Bai goes over and grabs the 17lb. baby by the neck, which is no mean feat. Thats a lot of weight to carry in her mouth. Then, she puts him down. And this is the part that really makes me laugh. She looks to the left, any lions? Looks to the right…any tigers, looks to the left again..any……HOOOOOMANS???? No..ok,…Everybody on YunZi!!! and play begins…cracks me up everytime…but then I really do need a life….

  92. Pat says:

I’ve been checking on the little man off and on for the past few hours and he hasn’t moved at all??? Is he okay???

  93. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Baby Boy, you just do things in your own time and own way. You are perfect in everyway. Thank you so much for the well written, loving update.

  94. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

Thanks for the update on cubbie. He is such a doll, I cannot get enough of watching him grow. He plays hard and naps hard too! Doxiemom, again, thanks for the video. I saw that in the time lapse and it was great to see it in regular time. I love how she puts him up on all four paws. I would love to hear sound for these sessions to see if he protests at all! It is amazing to me how she does not hurt him with those claws of hers! She is is such a loving wonderful panda mom, it really shows in how she plays and cuddles with him. I too do not want to see him grow too quickly, but it is fun to watch him play. I think I saw Bai today pick him up and put him on her platform in the bedroom and then leave. Did he really fall off? If so, I am glad he has the fat to keep him from being hurt. I will be nervous also watching him learn to climb. Oh well, growing boys………

  95. Kathy (Clovis, Ca.) says:

How cute that was watching them play. At one point, I thought mom was going to roll over on top of him. That was scary. He is full of energy and what a way to use it. Totally boy. Thanks for sharing.

  96. Pam T. says:

DoxieMom Thanks for the cute video. Our little boy will grow up fast enough so if he decide to take his own good time hooray for him.

  97. Kay Davies says:

Hard to decide who was having the most fun there, Yun Zi or Bai Yun. She was tossing him around like a football and he was coming back for more. Fabulous, Doxie, thanks!! As I’ve said before, this is the best part of cub-watching, the wrestle-with-mommy phase. The stay-in-a-tree phase comes all too soon. Sure am going to enjoy every moment of Yun Zi’s toddler stage, either on Panda Cam or on one of Doxie’s great videos.

  98. Panda Annie says:

Cute video and nice post. How many days old is yun zi?

Moderator’s note: See the first paragraph of today’s post.

  99. pandanuts says:

Yun Zi is out now, maybe he has read today’s blog.

  100. jb says:

    THANK YOU DOXIEMOM–WONDERFUL JOB

  101. lisa says:

Any such thing as a Panda concussion! That was quite a bonk on the head. He seems ok though. Guess some of Moms “teachings are harder than others! Poor Baby.

  102. Frances in NYC says:

Thanks, DoxieMom–somehow when I watched in real time earlier today, I managed to look away just as he took his dive off the platform. For his first time, I thought he showed really good form, and will know to duck his little head a bit more next time. New Olympic Panda tumbling champion!

  103. rita says:

If you would imagine Gao Gao when he was Yun Zi’s age, he may have been very much like Yun Zi. Maybe this cub has more of Gao Gao’s characteristics than Bai Yun’s.

  104. Susan (UK) says:

DoxieMom, another great video. Perhaps our little Yun Zi has leanings toward being a gymnast? That was an almost perfect somersault he performed there. A litte more practice and who knows? Maybe he could start up the Panda Gymnastic Group – P Wong, could that be an idea for future stories?

  105. Susan (UK) says:

#76 Jan, glad you had a lovely day meeting your new pandas. I’m sure you’ll take lots of photos next time – I was the same with my camera, had to get the manual out and then I set it on a ‘do everything without the flash’ mode so I just point and shoot. And no, there is no cure for Pandamania – just dive in and enjoy!!

  106. XiethePiXie in San Diego says:

Bai Yun and Yun Zi are so funny together! She reminds me of the Chinese acrobats who lie on their backs and juggle things with their feet. She’s using all four of her limbs to try to control one roly poly little cub, and it’s amazing! He’s certainly showing that he’s got a mind of his own, and his own timetable for doing things. Thanks, DoxieMom, for once again providing some great video of our favorite little panda.

  107. maryellen in fla says:

“87 Linda- Good Morning all. I too was fascinated about those taste receptors, I wonder what can be done to fix them, but, if they can change that then I wonder if that would change their personalalitis.( Please excuse spelling, never could get it! :) . My dog ate dry dog food for 15 years and then my son ( the Vet ) told me it was ok to give him table scraps. Once he tasted meat he became more aggressive. Just wondering. It was red meat that would do it, chicken was fine. Who knew.

“88 Dennis and Lynn, I have disintegrating disc and joint disease, but I haven’t had poor Lynn’s problems yet. I sure can identify with you as it is quite painful. 30 years ago I had a Fusion and Lamanectomy ( not sure on that spelling ) using bones from my hip and have not had a problem with my neck since then. My lower back is now in play and also my hands. Absolutely no fun.

Dear Moderator, thanks for the heads up on the zoom feature, I am new to this computer and didn’t even realize it was one of the features!

  108. Reenie in Atlanta says:

DoxieMom…..you are a GPF’s lifesaver! I saw Bai put YunZi on the platform on time-lapse, but that’s about all I could make out clearly. To see her playing with him on the platform was gorgeous! And then she walks away! She stayed for awhile, as Yuni was desperately measuring the edges and trying to figure it all out. Priceless video!

Jan….I’m so happy for your panda sighting! Shell out for the Zoo Membership right now! After the initial public panda hysteria, you’ll be able to go any time you want! That’s what I did here at ZooAtlanta.

  109. Carol L. says:

Aww I wish I had caught the tumble, they are really very cute falling especially when you know they don’t get hurt, they just bounce right back. It will make your heart stop the first few times you see it, but after you have been watching babies for four years or so you feel better about seeing them fall. Toddler stage is so much fun. There are a couple of videos out there of falling cubbies – Tai from the top of the mesh to the cement patio (scary), XI Lan taking a tumble off the drinker (adorable), a number of both Lani and AJ falling from the hammock. Thanks to Doxiemom for the wonderful videos.

  110. Shari says:

I’m curious…since pandas still have the “plumbing” of a carnivore (not a herbivore) have you ever tried feeding them a carnivore diet (i.e. something like “bear chow”)?

    Moderator’s note: We have not.

  111. Aude says:

“Yunior” is so precious! I for one am trying to enjoy every moment of this stage because before we know it, he’ll be out and on his own and no longer “our little baby boy”.

My Mom gave a sweet thought on why, perhaps, the little one is staying so close to home. Since Yun Zi is Bai’s last baby, maybe God is letting her have as much quiet, cuddle time with him as possible. Prolonging and allowing her to enjoy this final time as a Mama.

    A beautiful thought indeed! ;)

  112. Carol says:

Doxiemom, you outdid yourself with this video. Thanks!

  113. jeanneb says:

OK, now I’m ready to let go.

All night I got to watch as Bai and Yun snuggled warmly in their little den. Then, when he woke, Bai gently cradled him in her big arms …her right foot tap, tap, tapping while he nursed. I’ve seen it dozens of times before, but knowing it’s coming to an end made it all the more special.

What a special Christmas gift to us: an opportunity to watch pure, unspoilt love.

  114. Deana says:

My oh my what a big boy Yun Zi is becoming. He seems to be pretty independent on what he wants to do. Nothing is going to hold him back. LOVED the videos!!!!

  115. Heather says:

Suzanne, thanks for the update. We enjoy articles and posts from the zoo staff, not only at exam time, but any time. It keeps us informed about what you professionals have on your mind about the cub and his growth. I thoroughly enjoy these “snip-its.” Thank you.

Doxiemom, you are a treasure. If it hadn’t of been for you, I would have missed so much of the cub’s actions and play. I try to be at the computer as much as possible to check on “Yunior,” and what he’s up to, but can’t be in two places at one time. You always fill everything in, for all of us. We not only appreciate everything you do, but your video’s and clips show that the zoo appreciates all your hard work by posting them on their site. I am thrilled to seem them posting your video’s and stills. It adds alot to the Zoo site and are priceless memories of what may be Bai’s last cub. Thank you from the bottom of my heart (our hearts) Doxie. You are a special lady…

A question for our Panda keepers….when “Yunior” finally gives up his den, where will he do most of his sleeping? After Yun Zi leaves the den for good, do you all close the door permanently or is it left open?

It will be a sad day, when Yun Zi is finally on his own. I wonder if Bai Yun sets the time limit with each cub. Has it ever been known if a mother Panda allows a weaned cub to stay in her territory? I know that domestic animals will live along side their offspring after the mother is through with her mothering duties. I know in the wild, she cannot allow for a male cub to stay in her territory, due to the chance of cross-breeding, when the cub becomes sexually mature.

Thanks again, Suzanne and Doxiemom for making all of this, such a joyous and fun experience. These animals are literally priceless and you have given us a view into their world, that we otherwise would never get to see. God Bless the entire zoo staff for everything you do for ALL of your zoo inhabitants. You are a integral part of saving some of these animals from extinction. Thank the Lord above, for dedicated, caring and loving people, such as you.

Merry Christmas to all our posters and Zoo staff that celebrate Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the others. May 2010 be everything you ever dreamed it could be. I wish you great success in everything that you do and most of all I wish for peace in your lives and throughout the world…

  116. Corene says:

    Da lil dude’s a homeboy!

Thank you, Doxiemom for preserving Sunday’s play session. If bears could giggle, I’m sure both would have been. I was sitting at my desk alone, grinning from ear to ear.

  117. Dianna says:

I think our little panda is more interested in chewing his feet and rolling around looking cute and is in no hurry to venture out.
    :-)

  118. Margaret says:

Jan, #76, thanks for the date on the “pandas down under.” Glad you are close enough to visit them frequently. They are such a delight and the addiction is incurable, even when the cubs move to China. I still try to find out all I can about Mei Sheng and Hua Mei and what is going on in their lives in BiFengXia.

Dennis, I have happy to hear Lynn is showing signs of improvement. May GOD continue to stregthen both of you, and heal her. May your Christmas wish come true that you can be together close to home.

  119. celfy says:

Bai: Do you want to see peoples?
    Yunior: What’s that?

Bai: It’s a type of environment enrichment
    Yunior: Ooooh, what happens?

Bai: All these 2 leggies, what look like the vets and keepers, go by and we get to look at them but they don’t get to come to us.
Yunior: Sounds a bit boring, can we do anything else with them

Bai: Yes you can play “hide and seek”. Just go up a tree and see if they can spot you
Yunior: They won’t get me and make me have a shot from the vet will they?

Bai: No they just look at you and say how cute you are.
Yunior: That sounds ok, shall we go?

One day, almost before we know it, Yunior will be up trees playing hide and seek enrichment games. And I’m going to stop anthropromorphing and get back to being an Applied Animal Behaviourist before someone realises we humanise animals too!

  120. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

Talk about takes a licking and still keeps ticking by watching Daniel’s website got to see Xi Lan in Atlanta fall from the top of the climbing structure and hit the firehose before bouncing off of the floor and in the I wanted to do that attitude walked behind mom and sat down……Memphis Panda and Atlanta Mom are eating while NZ Pandas and Yunior nap…..LOL…..Talk about a Pandaholics sensory overload it’s great being able to see all the US Pandas at one easy viewing site…. ;-) :-) ;-)

Don’t worry about Yunior as due to my insomnia I am up and watching at various hours all night and he is a NIGHT OWL and hyperactive after dark and rests up to recharge his batteries during the day while he dreams about his next adventures……We will soon see Yunior take his falls and tumbles and perfect the summersaults he was doing last night in the den,and don’t fret or worry as Pandas are very flexible and live up to their nickname BearCats,as they fall and get right back up again…..Even when grown up as Gao Gao on occassion likes to climb up and free fall from trees ,get right back up and do it again…..I think ZZ Top was trying to do that in the tree limb jump as captured by DoxieMom for us GPF’s to enjoy at leisure and watch over and over again to experience Panda Bliss!….. :-) ;-) :-)

Jan are your feet back on the ground yet from your first of many encounters at Adelaide Zoo ? Pandaholicism an addiction that never leaves you feeling sad or blue as one look can cheer up and make a bleak day Happy ….. ;-) :-) ;-)

  121. Dianna says:

I just watched Yun Zi’s First Fall video. (I’m on my lunch break!) I would give the little guy an 8 overall score because his landing was a bit off. :-)

I always have to smile at Bai… she just sits there while Yunior bites any body part he can get his mouth on… Has she always been this tolerant of all her cubs, or is this just because he is #5?

Moderator’s note: She has always been tolerant…to a point ;-)

  122. Bobbie Wood says:

Jan #76: :) :) I am thrilled that you got to visit Funi and Wang! The fact that they both were awake and actively engaged in their exhibits is simply wonderful :) When you go back on Sunday, don’t worry is you see humans reflected in the glass along with the pandas. I have taken photos of the Gorillas, Polar Bears, and the pygmy hippos through the glass at the SDZ and really, it is fun to see ‘humans’ enjoying the antics of the animals. :) as reflected in the blass. Just keep clicking your camera :)

  123. Ruth from Austria says:

Suzanne, thank you for the update on Yun Zi. It shows how different every panda family member is. Most probably Yun Zi feels that he has got all the time of the world to crawl out of the den since it is so nice snuggling up in the den and being close to Bai Yun. But when he starts, boy, oh boy, Mommy Bai will have to watch out. I am pretty sure that he will make up for his late “entrance”. He is still so baby-like and we all wish him to stay like that a little longer. It reminds me of one of my cats that nursed from his mommy until the age of two! This is very unusual since the mother normally pushes her offspring away when it is time for them to become independent. I always had wondered why the mother cat did not do it but then found out that she never pushed her baby away because she just did not want her to go. She even bit off her whiskers to make her stay. She was an excellent mother and grandmother, too, since she helped to bring up her grandchildren as well. She had spoiled her daughter too much to enable her to develop mothering feelings. May be Bai Yun feels similarly.
Jan, I thought of you getting to meet Wang Wang and Funi yesterday. Once you are hooked on the marvellous creatures that’s it. The addiction will never stop believe me. And as Dennis says it even helps you beat the blues!
Dennis, I am so glad to learn that Lynn is feeling a bit better. I keep fingers crossed for the two of you to be united soon. All the best!
DoxieMom, many thanks for all your efforts providing us with all the great videos. The last one of Yun Zi tumbling off was priceless!

  124. Shirley says:

To everyone who has wondered about the bamboo diet, I read in the newspaper just this morning that a panda genome project has a potential answer. Pandas, it reported, do not taste savory foods (like meat), so why would they want to eat them??? I thought that was interesting.

  125. Gabrielle says:

Here is the song that came to me this morning, to the tune of “Oh, Christmas tree, Oh, Christmas tree”.
Oh panda boy, oh panda boy, won’t you be my panda boy. Oh, panda boy, oh panda boy, won’t you be my panda boy. I love you so, you should know. Oh panda boy, oh panda boy, won’t you be my panda boy. Oh, how love to watch you grow. Oh panda boy, oh panda boy, won’t you be my panda boy. Merry Christmas!

  126. JLew says:

I say let Yunior stay little as long as possible! He has a great mommy and great keepers! Let him be chubby cubby for as long as he wants too! :)
Doxiemom – thanks for Sunday’s vid – it is great to see Bai interact with Yunior!

  127. Cheryl says:

#87… the cam has a zoom feature? I’ve been watching this little boy since the day he was born and I didn’t know it had a zoom…

    Where is the zoom?

Moderator’s note: No, but most computers allow you to zoom in on the page you’re viewing.

  128. doreen in virginia says:

Is anyone having problems viewing the Memphis panda cam? I cant get it on the zoo web site or on daniels website. I emailed the zoo and they said they would check it out Dennis #120 said he was watching it on Daniel’s site.

  129. Elisa in Brazil says:

    DoxieMom ,
I enjoyed so much watching your video.
In my opinion, Yun Zi ’s age is the most interesting time to watch fighting and playing with mom. Cute… Thank you!

  130. pandafan-north says:

#76 Jan – I’m so glad you were able to be one of the first to see Funi and Wang (I love their names). Isn’t it a thrill? I have a suggestion for taking photos through the glass walls – I found that if you put your camera lens right up against the glass, you will not capture the reflections. However, success with this is very dependent on where the bears are. If they are far enough away, and you have a strong zoom, you can get great close-ups.

#121 Diana – As one of DoxieMom’s videos showed, Bai can tolerate anything anytime except for when she’s eating her ‘boo. For the bears, eating is almost a sacred rite – you don’t want to cross one while theyre happily munching.

Re the discussion on pandas being herbivores and/or carnivores – I once found a video on youTube called “Panda Eats Goat” or something like that and it was very interesting to watch this panda tear the meat off and chew it just like a brown bear would. I would think they’ll probably eat whatever is available as long as they can perceive it as food. Is this a question for the Panda Team?

As for Yun Zi falling off the platform – he was pacing back and forth on that thing and you just knew he was wanting to get off. You could see Bai sitting across from him, just watching. Well, I think that was the first of many falls to come. I’ve seen all US cubs fall – I think Tai was the one who fell from the highest spot in the indoor enclosure and he was play/fighting with Mei at the time. Many of you will remember that heart-stopping moment. I saw ZZ fall of a tree branch on my first visit. They just shake themselves up and “start all over again” as the song says.

Moderator’s note: You may enjoy reading a previous post, Food for Thought.

  131. Sukochi Lee says:

He is just practicing for when he gets the couch and remote. : ))

  132. Kathie says:

Thanks for sharing the video. What fun it is to see them interact and play together – he obviously is very attached to his mom and you are right, what a wonderful mom! He does seem very content and secure in the birthing den. I am sure he will explore his world eventually.

  133. Jim says:

I think a piece of carpet in the den area like that in the exam area would aid greatly in the baby’s walking and climbing. For some reason the boy doesn’t like to work out on the slippery surface.

I was sure he was behind his siblings in his apparent development, but he seems to be up to speed by some miracle when he is dragged out of his sleep and into the outside world. Look how much coordination and strength he has when Bai Yun drags him outside for a play session.

“All’s well that ends well,” I guess. [:~D]

  134. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

i could swear that i see two paw drag marks heading out of the den as if a certain little big puffy somebody was being told by a certain big fluffy somebody………..GO OUTSIDE!! DONT’ WASTE YOUR DAY AWAY IN THIS DARK CAVE LIKE DWELLING. YOU NEED SOME SUN, SON!

  135. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#76 – Jan- so happy for you :) Seeing panda in person is a thrill :) and you had the luck to see them moving wow :)

  136. lisa says:

Oh My Gosh…..I swear he is the cutest EVER! Playing with toes and Boo and then there is the little black spot….Don”t want this toddler stage to end.

I didn’t know about a zoom feature either and still don’t know where it is on my laptop.

I just turned the cub on and he is sitting there, looking just like an adult…..sitting and playing with bamboo like he was eating it. He looks like a shrunken down big panda with his postion of sitting up.
I think with all the biting he does to his mom that its time to get him a safe toy to bite on and roll around. Like a Kong toy or something indestrucible.
He doesn’t have much to entertain himself with except biting his mom!

Moderator’s note: Try clicking on “View” on your computer’s toolbar. There should be a “zoom” option under there.

The Nature article about the panda genome finding is really fascinating. It says there are three genes responsible for tasting savory tastes (“umami” as I discovered savory tastes are technically called!). The panda has a mutation in one of these three genes, which, together with one of the other two genes is a receptor for savory tastes and may be the sole receptor. So the mutation in this one gene may prevent the panda from tasting savory tastes, which might account for how pandas first started to gravitate towards a plant-based diet.

But it didn’t sound as if they know for sure that there is only this one receptor for savory tastes, or that the mutation they found would prevent it from working. Also, the receptor detects an amino acid common in heavy protein foods, but the pandas would still be able to detect other tastes in meat through their other taste receptors – so it didn’t sound like the meat would have no flavor at all. They just wouldn’t notice that special, meaty taste. Interesting stuff!

Okay – enough distraction contemplating panda gastronomy – back to work! :D

I read Suzanne’s posting from yesterday again. Of course, the reporting is excellent, however, I am kind of sad that you report that little cloud is a little slower than his sibs. And I can’t get it out of my mind while watching that cute little elf in his nursery, rolling around like the BABY he is. I adore every moment watching him, but now there’s a nagging in the back of my head, that he’s slow. That really takes away from the experience. Well, I am just going to ignore the study notes. He is just a late bloomer, but, oh boy, when he’s ready, he’s gonna blow everyone out of the water! Except Zhennie, of course, she’s my baby. Kinda like Superman and Clark Kent…his little cape will start showing when it’s ready to unfold from his little furry body!

  140. Carol L. says:

just watched the tumble clip. i think yunior did a fantastic job of getting down and the tumble was just so cute. mom knows exactly what she was doing walking away, dats how she teaches him.

Is there going to be a video from todays exam??? It wasn’t mentioned………….I do hope so………….

Watching him sleep right now, he must have had yet another big day…….LOL….
I watched Bai take him out this afternoon, don’t know where, but I’m sure he had fun…………

    Good Morning Everyone from Adelaide

I just love reading all the blogs – I am learning so much about pandas and the wonderful people who make up the GPF.

Dennis and Lynn #88 and #128 – yes I am thrilled – they just took my breath away. About the panda cam at Adelaide Zoo – I have sent through an email to the CEO and have asked that very question and told him that the GPF want to know – will let you know when he replies. I know there are 30 cameras in the panda areas – many of course for security. you are so right about pandas making you feel good and curing the blues. Lots of Panda love and hugs to Lynn from Adelaide

Doxiemom19 – Thank you Thank you Thank you – I just love so much the stories you tell with your videos

Susan #105 – so glad there is no cure for pandaholism!! camera is fixed and ready for Sunday

Reenie #108 – Thanks for the advice re membership – John and I are so lucky to have life membership so can go any time and we only live 15 Km from the Zoo – how lucky are we?

Bobbi #122 – Thanks for the hints about photos – will try on Sunday

Ruth #123 – Oh yes I am absolutely hooked

Pandafan – north #130 – Thanks for photography hints but i should tell you I am an absolute amateur!!

Maureen #135 – Thanks for the best wishes – So seeing them moving is unusual???

Linda #138 – thanks for useful info about panda genome – I am learning something new every day

Well today it is 39 degrees ( Celsius) so sitting inside, Air conditioner on and just a little boo (oops meant salad) for lunch

Panda Hugs and Peace to everyone

My husband believes that if we give Pandas meat then when we introduce them back into the wild they might starve due to their gentle nature and the lack of fried chicken in those mountains. I wonder if the love of tree living is also part of it because bears seem to be a bit lazy and it is easier to just reach out to eat than to get down and kill something.

On the top bar of my computer, one says window and when I click on it one of the lines reads zoom. I use a mac, so it maybe on other computers it would be under view.

139 kat w. I don’t think by slow they meant mentally, I just think they meant he is on his own schedule sort of like my son who took 2 years to learn the potty, but my daughter only took 13 months. oops don’t mention this to my son :)

I don’t think Yun Zi is behind in his development at all…look how well he was walking on the weekend and exploring every nook and crany and even trying to climb a bit. I think our little guy is more like “son of ‘big’ cloud” perhaps? Seems to me a certain daddy panda is quite content just eating and sleeping in his favorite cave….:)

  145. Charisse D. says:

I agree with Kathy, babies develop at their own pace. Children are quick to develop at one thing and slower at other things. Also, children, and perhaps cubs too, have their own interests. I think about it even with children, some kids like to stay around the house and some like to be involved in every activity. I think it is just the variety of life. Yun Zi was very active playing outside for a couple of days, then today we had a restful day. Yun Zi is perfect. He is developing so well. I notice him working on climbing when he is at the den entrance. I think Yun Zi is very smart. He was able to locate Bai Yun the other day when he went looking for her. I think he found her on his own. I was impressed.

  146. Mindy says:

I love watching the exam videos everytime there is a new one. I check in on baby Yun Zi every evening. I wish I could hug and squeeze him.

  147. Linda says:

#143 maryellen – LOL – thanks for the laugh! I can just picture a very plump panda sprawled out, back against a tree in the mountains of Sichuan, tucking away into a big bucket of Kentucky Fried! The caption would read: “My umami receptors don’t work, but salt and grease seem to be just fine!”

  148. Phyllis says:

    Hi Family,
Haven’t been writing or reading as much as I’d like to because I’m spending too much time at the darn doctors. Sorry, miss you guys.

    Who fell off the table??

Moderator’s note: Yun Zi took a tumble off the platform/scale in the bedroom. DoxieMom captured the action on Panda Cam and provided this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2LKx6p5kKA

  149. Phyllis says:

    Hi Moderator,

Sorry, I haven’t bothered you in a while but I’ve been very busy going to Drs. I watched little Yun Zi fall head first off the platform in the bedroom when Bai Yun left him there alone. I LOVE Bai and I believe she is an AMAZING mother, so I don’t understand something. Little Yun kept walking around and around that platform for a while, it was obvious he wanted to get down and couldn’t. Being the mom she is, I just can’t get my head around why she would leave the room, with him up on the platform when she knew he wanted “off” so he could be with her. It doesn’t seem to fit her diligent protectiveness. Please explain; and is he really o.k? He kept shaking his little head after he fell and maybe I’m being a newbie, but it really concerns me. Can we be sure he didn’t twist his little neck or get hurt in some way? I’m sorry, I don’t know how high the platform is, and this is my first panda baby, so I guess I’m not too sure about some things. By the way, did I tell you I adopted Yun Si for myself? :-) It makes me soooooo proud, even though I’m obviously not his real mommy. It even helps me a little bit when I start to cry because I miss my dog who died recently. I probably sound silly, but I just imagine hugging and cuddling Yun Zi and it helps me to stop the tears a little sooner. Thanks for answering all these questions for me. New “Mommies” are real pains, aren’t we? As usual, you’re a wonderful, considerate and empathetic person. I hope Santa brings you everything you are hoping for AND a surprise!!! :-)

Moderator’s note: Bear mothers (including the panda variety) often let their cub(s) figure things out for themselves. Panda cubs seem well adapted for taking tumbles without injury. And remember, Yun Zi had a checkup the day after that tumble; the vet would have noticed if something was not right. Be sure to read the post Reaching New Heights for more assurance that this is part of the cub’s learning process.

  150. Phyllis says:

    Dear Moderator,

God Bless You, again. You have the most beautiful knack for answering my questions and putting my mind at ease, without making me feel like a fool. I thank you for that; and I do feel MUCH better. I never stopped to realize that Yuni had a physical the day after it happened…duh!!! Thank you friend, you really eased my mind and that is a very difficult task to do.

Please consider yourself hugged from my heart :-)
    Phyllis

Moderator’s note: You’re very welcome, Phyllis!

  151. julia says:

they are so cute playing together – Thank you all!!! for letting us watch all the babies and the other cams r good too. I heard that pandas or is it monkey that fall out of trees all the time and don’t get hurt…True?

Moderator’s note: Panda cubs are known to tumble out of trees without injury.

  152. Claudia says:

Hey look at lion and tiger and cat cubs and kittens, they tumble and bite all the time. It seems Yunior is knowing that he is “round” and might “roll”, see the way he can hardly step down from the den? Maybe he is dizzy, or top heavy, or can’t see heights yet? Like he is a drunken sailor I read here someplace. He is indeed a “Rolly Polly” wish there were a name for that, he is round and knows it, like a pill bug or porcupine….I want to know if when you push on his back legs they push back?? Our clips are so limited, wait until he is running !

  153. Robin says:

Yun Zi seems to be more timid compared than Zhen or Su Lin and also seems to prefer the den for his naps because it is cozy and quiet. Will the zoo let him take things at his own pace? He won’t be put on exhibit before he is ready will he? Will the zoo provide him with a cozy hideout when he is on exhibit?

Moderator’s note: He will not make his public debut until the Panda Team feels he is ready to do so.

  154. Georgie from PA says:

Thanks to the Den Decorator for again covering the Den floor with bamboo.
Yun Zi probably doesn’t give a hoot…but it makes we Nervous Nellies comfortable about it!

During his waking hours playing alone in the Den, he’ll he’ll now be able to chew on the bamboo.
He really seemed content yesterday, “chewing up a storm”, till Mommie came home.

I don’t know how thick his fur coat is now, but I guess dense enough to protect His Chubbiness….
plus a nice layer of fat…is that so Moderator?
Since they’re native to cooler climes they probably tolerate the pleasingly cool San Diego nights.

Wish I was there now….here in Eastern Pennsylvania, we are waiting for a considerable snow storm
Satuday and Sunday. Just in time for Santa ! Ho! Ho! Ho!

Moderator’s note: His Chubbiness is well protected
    ;-)

  155. Catbelly says:

Hey Georgie – I was just going to ask if I could come get Yun Zi and bring him East for the snow. LOL I’ll bet that would get him moving ! ! Pandas always remind me of Bumble – they seem to bounce !

Great update as always Suzanne. I just love reading about their little individual personalities. When I was in China the cubbies were all together and you could really observe their uniqueness – they ranged all over the scale. Some would go off and play and others would just hang out…until the ones who were playing realized their pals weren’t playing along then they would come and instigate. The rolling and tumbling and climbing commenced – pandamonium at it’s finest. Then they would tire out and plop.

How are the Sun Bears doing?

  156. Georgie from PA says:

    Dear Catbelly #155…

Gather up all the Pandas..the snow keeps falling..and falling..and falling !!!!
We will have such fun tumbling in the snow.

It’s 1:40 PM (EST)..12/19…and it doesn’t show signs of stopping.
Pretty to look at…tricky driving….Think I’ll stay in where it’s warm.

We will have fun with the snuggle bears…may I keep Yun ZI for my very own? Pretty please?
Do you think Pandas like hot chocolate with marshmallows?

I just took a peek at baby..he is amusing himself gnawing on the bamboo in the den.
Have a fun day…ours is going to be interesting!
I did the grocery store “snow run’ yesterday….bread, milk, eggs, and bathroom tissue.
We are all set. Ho! Ho! Ho!

  157. Pandalektro says:

How many kids could bai Yun have in the future, do panda ladys also hae a menopause

  158. rose says:

i bet kathy has grown so attatched to yun zi handling him so much as she does. he is a cutie. he seems to play at nite and he likes to sleep in the day. maybe baby has his nights and days mixed up lol!!

  159. SwimGidget says:

A wonderful video of nature at it’s best. Yun Zi is amazing and his little will and strength are a joy to watch. He does things on his own terms and is cared for from such a wonderful Mother. Awesome to watch. Little Yun Zi wins my heart everyday. He’ll be HUGE before we know it, so enjoy his “littleness” now!

  160. kat Wilson says:

Tired boy just dragged himself into the nursery, so cute, he just bearly made it, then fell to the floor, I think he was asleep before he even hit the ground…..little munchkin.

Sleep soundly, baby…and momma, who’s asleep at the door.

  161. Shirley Ann says:

The little guy is out in the Classroom using up all that pent up energy. Fun to watch him rolling off logs and getting right back up and trying it again. Bai Yun now has a real little tom boy who is out to conquer the world and with his tenacity – he will.

    Thanks for the pandacam.

    Shirley

  162. Marie says:

I was amused at watching lil Yun trying to climb a branch just now. His back legs can’t quite reach yet, but the lil fella gave it his all before he finally gave up.

  163. Kay from Iowa says:

I have 27 inches of snow so everyday I check on Yun Zi wishing I could be in San Diego. He is such a joy to watch.
