15th Exam: All Boy

Posted at 12:42 pm December 10, 2009 by admin

panda_exam15When little Yun Zi was brought in for his weekly exam this morning, he was a pretty sleepy guy. After his brief checkup, though, he was wide awake and ready to explore! And this time he had some fun items to investigate: an apple slice, a blue ball, and a bamboo toy. He gave each a curious sniff, but what really got his attention was the shiny stethoscope that was on the floor!

Now about 17 pounds (7.7 kilograms), Yun Zi showed improvement with his walking as he motored around the rug. He also demonstrated that he is a cub with attitude: he let keeper Kathy Hawk know when he’d had enough of that measuring tape! She declared him “all boy.”

Here’s a comparison of the Zoo’s five panda cubs:

Hua Mei, Day 130:
15.8 lbs (7.2 kg); 28.5 in (72.5 cm) long

Mei Sheng, Day 127:
15.4 lbs (7 kg); 28 in (71 cm) long

Su Lin, Day 128:
13.2 lbs (6 kg); 25.5 in (65 cm) long

Zhen Zhen, Day 124:
15.4 lbs (7 kg); 29.9 in (76 cm) long

Yun Zi, Day 127:
17 (7.7 kg); 28 in (71.5 cm) long

See video. And thanks to DoxieMom, we have a cute slide show of Yun Zi’s antics in the den this morning.

Perhaps we need to ad “Dr.” in front of Yun Zi’s name :) I cannot wait to watch the video :)

  2. Shirley Ann says:

Quite interesting seeing him going through all the levels of growing up. He seems to move more on examinations than when he is left in his den. The devil in him wakes up. I would like to give a big hug – he looks so hugable.

  3. Susan (UK) says:

That panda has got his career all mapped out – he’s going to be a veterinary surgeon! He looks so adorable in the picture.

I received my Yun Zi adoption papers today. Thank you so much, the panda plush was so much bigger than I thought it would be and so cute with a ribbon with his name on. And the picture. Well, what a stunner. We are going to frame it and hang it with our other panda and polar bear pictures. I was expecting an e-mail telling me what the postage was going to cost but SDZ has paid for that. So, next time I buy some goodies from the Wish List I will add a few more to make up for the cost of the postage.

Tomorrow morning I shall enjoy watching the video over my breakfast cup of coffee.

Moderator’s note: Thanks for adopting our cutie!

  4. Linda Hoge says:

I imagine he does feel everyone is being a wee-bit excessive with the measuring tape!

  5. Ellen says:

I’ve noticed he seems to look at his reflection in the shinier walls of the den. Also he looks like he wants to go back out the “exam room door” at times. He seems so much more confident walking in the exam room, than in the bedroom area. Wary of his mom’s moods?? He a cutey, that’s for sure!

  6. cindy in kc says:

    Just too much!! :)

  7. Kira says:

He’s so adorable. I want to pet him so badly.

  8. IowaChop says:

DoxieMom, Thanks for sharing the slide show of our little sweetheart. He was a busy boy this morning.

  9. JLew says:

I have never “blogged” before but Yunior and his family are just the best and I had to send out a big “Thank you” to SDZ for all their hard work with all the animals (Pandas especially)! LOVE chubby cubby and couldn’t stand not shouting it to the other pandaholics out there! Can’t wait to see the vid of today’s exam! :)

Moderator’s note: Welcome to the comment section, JLew!

  10. Lisa in Maine says:

Just like a boy, give him all the things he is allowed to play with and he will go for the one he is not supposed to have.

Can’t wait to see the video.

If you need any snow, just let me know. We got about 10″ yesterday on top of the 6 we already had. I love Maine, I love Maine, hey, if I say it enough times I might start to believe it.

Moderator’s note: Snow. Is is that white stuff I sometimes read about? ;-)

  11. Kay Davies says:

Oh, I loved the slide show by DoxieMom. I’ve already discovered her videos on youtube and am thrilled. Now, when I’ve been away, I can catch up with Yun Zi’s cutest antics (and that’s the right word) when I get back. Looking forward to SDZ’s video of our big boy’s latest exam, too. Thanks, Doxie. Thanks, SDZ.

  12. kclaire santry says:

It’s easy to see how one precious Panda cub can capture so many hearts. Can you tell us if he will be out for public viewing before Christmas. And what time of the day, if so?
You have presented us with the step-by-step growth spurts via your exam videos. Thank you soooooooo
    very much…for these delightful videos!

Moderator’s note: We do not have a date for his public debut. But trust us, we will let everyone know when we do ;-)

  13. PandaPaw says:

What a doll! He weighs almost as much as my cat. Both are “All Boy” too.

  14. Georgie in PA says:

Thank You DoxieMom….You are one in a million !! You made my day!

I just realised that I have been watching and loving little Yun Zi since August….
Where did the time go? My past months have been full of awe and wonder.
Thanks in part to you, and the one and only San Diego Zoo !!

It is interesting, that Bai Yun knew when to leave bigger pieces of Bamboo in the nest
    for YunZi to teethe on..
    Mother Nature is amazing.
BaiYun seems so human at times it’s incredible! Right on!!!

    Can’t wait to see the fun-filled exam………..

  15. sue says:

He is just too cute! I would love to get my hands on him.

  16. Janan Huntsberry says:

Love seeing him up so close in the den!!! Anxiously awaiting the exam video….
Is his fur coat thicker every time he has an exam? Would he eat that apple slice or just play with it?
Thanks so much for making us Panda People so happy!!

Moderator’s note: He’s not ready to attempt to eat anything, but food items are fun to mouth!

  17. Brenda Kuehne says:

i am a kindergarten teacher in Little Falls MN and in our reading series we read the book “Little Panda” which is about Bai Yun and Hua Mei when she was born. I have logged onto your sight and have shown the children daily what Yun Zi is up too. It has been a wonderful teaching tool. The kids love seeing him grow and seeing the check-ups on video as it talks about it in our book. It also has been fun for them to actually see Bai Yun! Thanks for this great experience for my students.

Moderator’s note: Thank you for sharing our pandas with your students! Perhaps there is a future panda researcher, keeper, veterinarian, or blog moderator in the class…

  18. Pandafan#2 says:

Moderator: Thanks SO much for that link! I sent the baby Su Lin one to my mom (as well as a lot of others), and she loved it! It’s kind of funny. I send my mom panda ones, and she sends me polar bear ones! (I love pandas, she loves polar bears) Wouldn’t Yun Zi look so cute in a Santa hat? :D I’d love to see him in that. Does anyone know the names of Hua Mei’s 3 sets of twins? I know Hao Hao, because of one of those pictures of Hua Mei in China.

  19. Jeanne says:

Watching him knaw on the bamboo reminds me when the calves start to chew on hay – they have no idea why they are doing it, but they see Mom doing it, so it must be good! Of course right after they have to wash it down with a long sip of milk. Thanks for the slide show.

  20. Laura from Il. says:

he is just as cute as ever and really enjoy watching him when he’s awake now. I saw him this morning chewing on the sticks and was wondering if he eats it?? I know he still nurses but was curious about the bamboo. I love when he’s on his back and plays with his little paws. Saw him grabbing his back foot this morning and putting it to his mouth. I just want to kiss him! You are all so lucky! Waiting for the video so I can hear his little noises.Big kisses to little one and mama from me!

  21. Brenda Baxendale says:

Little Yun Zi (and Bai Yun…) have been addicting to watch and have become great stress relievers for our office :-) Thanks for all that you do in allowing the rest of the world to enjoy something so beautiful and precious!

  22. Pam T. says:

I think there’s not going to be a dull moment when Yunior get to go out on display he’s already showing sign of wanting to be on the go and into everything. Can’t wait.

  23. Chari Mercier says:

Hi, you all! Been on the website off and on watching Zuni on the pandacam, mostly asleep, but haven’t written anything for a few days. Have had some things to do around here, Christmas decorations, and my 17 year old son being sick with sinus drainage and coughing this whole week (he was out or school 3 days!) and had to take him to the doctor; he doesn’t have bronchitis, tho. It’s that time of year here in Florida with the weather switching around every few days, and people tend to get sick with weather changes around here. Pandas would love our weather, tho!
Just read the update about Yuni’s 15th exam at the vet’s office. Up to 17 pounds already, huh?? Still growing!! Waiting for the video to come in to watch this little fuzzy butt do his walking stuff. I have seen him walk on the cam, and he has made some improvements on his motoring skills from what I saw lately. Bai had better get ready to start chasing him around because this little guy won’t be stopping for anybody, unless he’s up a tree! Climbing practice is the next thing on his milestone agenda. I read on the last exam update that all of his teeth have come in, so I’m suspecting that Bai is feeling those teeth when Yuni is nursing from her. That’ll be uncomfortable for her, but she will let him get his daily amount of milk for him to grow big and strong. Bai’s a great mom as we all know by now!
Got a Christmas email from Pandas International. Wishing everyone a very nice holiday! Waiting for next week when Animal Planet will be announcing the Hero of the Year. Can’t wait!
Not much else. Yuni is his usual, very adorable, cuteness self, and yes, I would just LOVE to hug him myself! Oh well—-sigh!!

  24. Betty says:

The other night Yun Zi was on TV on “Inside Edition” with Deborah Norville. She was with Yun Zi during one of his check-ups, which is what they showed on the TV show. He was his usual cute self, of course, and I’m sure the pandas have gained a few more fans from that TV exposure.

  25. Dorothy Bain says:

I can’t wait for the video! Is it me or is Bai keeping our baby boy in the den longer than the other babies? He looks like he weighs a lot more than 17 pounds – guess it is all that fur. Keep up the good work – or is it really work for you guys? Just kidding, I’m sure it isn’t all fun and games.

  26. Kathy says:

I have loved watching once or more a day since Yun Zi was born, but I do wish you would stop the gender essentialism in such labels as “All Boy”. His behaviour may not be due to his sex, and you are just imputing what’s in your heads about the way males and females are supposed to be.

  27. Linda says:

OMG – I can’t wait for the video!! He looks so cute in that picture and in the slide show – thanks DoxieMom for all the wonderful videos you provide to all of us certified pandaholics!! :D
One of my favorite parts of the last exam is where Yunior appears to push away the stethoscope with a little “humph” noise, maybe he was just frsutrated that he couldn’t grab and explore. I love when he moves his front paws and stretches his body forward trying to get away from the keepers! He is definitely a strong-willed panda with a mind of his own – can’t wait to see him pushing away that pesky measuring tape – look out world, here comes Yun Zi!!!! :D

  28. Cris says:

    so cute

  29. Kelly in FLA says:

Just wanted to say a special THANKS to Doxie Mom, for putting these videos up, for those of us who miss out on some of the cuteness. Thanks to the San Diego Zoo team as well. :-)

  30. Rhoda says:

Oh My Goodness!!! He is out and about with no problems this afternoon! I can’t get over how well he is walking around going in and out of the den!! He IS such a big boy now! My goodness – he is precious!! Thanks for the update on his 15th exam – can’t wait to see that video. He must think he is a BIG SHOT!! LOL

  31. Suzanne (the other one) says:

Hmmm, are we sure he’s not a baby raven? Attracted to (camera/video) lights, shiny objects, shiny reflections on the wall… Bai Yun, do you have some ’splainin’ to do? Can’t wait for the video!

  32. Dianne in Texas says:

At 2:00 p.m. (SDZ time), Yun Zi was busy chewing/gumming the bamboo in his den. Teething, I would imagine. His personality is so different from ZZ’s, both characters, but in different ways. They are so lovable it’s unreal. I recently adopted him for my gr-granddaughter. I’m training her right. She’s a football fan, and a panda-fan. Now, I have a problem that I’m hoping someone might help me solve. My 6 year old gr-granddaughter wants Panda sheets. I’ve been told they’re out there…I just don’t know where. Does anyone have any info on this?

I have been keeping an eye on Tai Shan, and have seen him in training a coupld of times. Still breaks my heart, but I’m making myself watch it to be ready for the big day. I hope China realizes the gifts they’re getting in our beautiful American-raised giant pandas. They have already proven they are the best! :) However, Hua Mei is a hard act to follow!

Now, bring on that next video!!

Moderator’s note: Thank you for adopting Yun Zi for your great-grandaughter. I wish our online store, Shopzoo.com, had panda sheets for her, but we do have other fine panda stuff ;-)

  33. Deana says:

Just as adorable as always. Loved the video of his antics this morning in the den. Thank you!!!

  34. TAMI MICHAUD says:

I’m watching him in the den….it looks like he can’t get out….but I bet that Bai tells him to stay in the den??????? I’d hate to know he’s
    afraid.
I’d like to think he’s listening to mom???
    Moderator do you know???

Moderator’s note: I’m not going to pretend to know what Yun Zi is hearing ;-) Do keep in mind that he can hear keepers and other Zoo sounds.

  35. Linda, Illinois says:

Dear DoxieMom, Thank you so much for the cute slide show! Can’t wait to see the video of his latest exam.

  36. Reenie in Atlanta says:

    DOXIEMOM FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!

  37. CHERYL says:

The poor little guy is having a hard time trying to get out of his den. He keeps trying, but I think he can’t pull his chunky little rump up and out of there. Can’t wait to see the video of his 15th exam.

  38. Debi says:

Those photos are adorable and I can’t wait to see the exam video! He is so tremendously cute and I think he knows it!! I love him chewing and mouthing boo. He is such a big, chubby, happy baby boy! I love that he is attracted to shiny objects, first the light on the camera and now the stethoscope. I was walking very well before I was 1 yrs old and boy was I fascinated with the garland and lights of a Christmas tree. Apparently I kep saying “oooooo!” Just goes to show we are not so different! It will be interesting to see if this follows through to his adulthood. It has with me! Lights, garland, tinsel, diamonds…hehehehe…

  39. Karen, the O.C. says:

I didn’t think he could get much cuter! Now that his personality is coming through, I find myself just mesmerized. I thought my 5# toy poodle, who has passed, was the cutest thing ever in this universe…. I too wish I could hold and hug him before he objects too much.

  40. Kristi Ferguson in Austin, TX says:

Thanks for the slideshow, DoxieMom! Our baby boy is absolutely adorable.

  41. Chari Mercier says:

Just watched Doxiemom’s very cute photo gallery! Yuni is doing what our own little babies will do at 4 months old! They discover hands/fingers, feet/toes and put them in their mouths along with anything else they can grab to put in mouths! Very typical baby behavior even in baby animals! Thanks, Doxiemom!!
Was just on AZ’s pandapage to check the pandacam to see Xi Lan outdoors, and yup, no Xi Lan on the cam! I think they just went inside when I got on there. Anyway, a couple of news reports to share with you from what I have just read on AZ’s website. The Give So They Stay campaign has a new total that has been raised—$274,000 so far with about 2 1/2 weeks left in their campaign. Now, there’s a tie-in to that campaign. This past summer the AZ Board of Directors were discussing about renegotiating their lease of the pandas at AZ with the Chinese. They decided to start those talks with the Chinese at that time, and by early fall, the talks were ongoing. On their news update for Dec. 8, 2009, the Board had voted to approve a new 5 year agreement with the Chinese at their last meeting for 2009. This will keep Lun Lun, Yang Yang, and Xi Lan at AZ when the Chinese approve this agreement. More details will be made available after the Give So They Stay campaign is done and upon approval from the Chinese. This campaign still needs to raise the $500,000 in order to fund this new 5 year deal that will allow Lun, Yang, and Xi Lan to stay in Atlanta. They really deserve to keep the pandas in Atlanta!
On a sad but very important note, I did find out the date of when Mei Lan will be leaving Atlanta for China—February, 2010. That will be a very sad month for all of us, but Mei Lan will be a great contributor to their breeding program there. I think she will be going to Chengdu, China to their panda center there.
That’s all of the panda news for now. Going back to the SDZ pandacam; AZ’s pandacam is shut down until 10am EST tomorrow morning!
    Chari Mercier :)
    St. Pete, FL
PS: Looks like Mei Lan’s departure for China is on the same time frame as Tai Shan’s departure for China, maybe about a month apart either way in 2010. We will all be doing some crying during that time of the year seeing 2 lovely pandas leaving the US! Then, Su Lin will be leaving us! Oh well—sigh!!

  42. Panda Fan says:

Yun Zi couldn’t be cuter!! Little pandas just wanna have fun! :D

  43. DoxieMom says:

Reenie #36, I’ll volunteer to be secretary for the San Diego Zoo chapter of Pandaholics Anonymous, if there was one!! LOL!! I’m certainly addicted to our precious Yun Zi, as if you guys couldn’t tell!!

Thank you dear Moderator, you’ve always been so kind to me!

  44. Darlene in Chilliwack, BC says:

I agree with everyone, thanks DoxieMom and to the moderator for putting her links on here. Its hard to get on cam during a work day, but at night its nice cuz we can see what our little boy has been up to during the day. I did manage to catch him awake for a few minutes today. He is getting more and more adventerous and I love it when he seems to be “playing” with his reflection.

We are off to Costa Rica next Saturday for 3 weeks, sure hope that our house there will have Internet.. But, I’m sure my friend Lee will send me lots and lots of postcards. I hope I don’t miss his first venture outdoors when he goes on display.

So, I would like to wish all of you Panda Fans and everyone involved with the care of these beautiful Bears a wonderful and safe Holiday Season, see “well virutaly” you all in 2010…. :)

  45. Bobbie Wood says:

Doximom: Great Photo Show!!! Great Subject :)

  46. carol says:

#32 Dianne please check ebay or amazon.com for panda bedding for children how innocent how beautiful our baby grows

  47. Cheryl says:

From Charlotte, NC. Please post the video!! In suspense here and lov’n Yu-baby!!

I think we could make an energy bar and name it after him, a Yu-Z Energy Bar… anybody in??? :-)

  48. kathy, canada says:

I agree with Kathy Hawk’s assessment – our Yun Zi is all boy! Every time they try to measure him or fuss over him…he starts protesting like my son would when he was little! You can almost imagine him saying ‘oh mom’ stop it please, I just want to play and run and explore! Of course when they’re tired or not feeling well, then they don’t mind the snuggles and the attention :)

  49. Regina says:

Little man look like he’s ready for some chew toys. I was telling my co-worker it would be good entertainment to see he him playing and chewing on toys in the den because he’s having a ball with the little shreds of bamboo left behind by mom :-)

  50. Lee in Vancouver says:

Darlene #44 – Don’t worry, you won’t miss a thing with me around. Your inbox will probably be bursting at the seams when you get back. There’s an internet cafe in Quepos if you need it.

  51. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

Thanks DoxieMom for the slide show. Little Panda Boys just wanna have fun. Yun Zi is so cute. He is getting around a whole lot more now. Cannot wait to see the video of his exam.

  52. Lynda, Lansing, MI says:

Just watched the video!! YAY! I won’t have a free minute to watch it tomorrow! It was great to see Dr. Meg again!! We haven’t seen as much of her with Yunior!!
He is certainly all boy and is ready to have his way!! WTG SDZ!! What a handsome boy “we” have!!

  53. Susan H. , Santa Clara says:

Man, this kid is more than a handful and full of attitude indeed! Can’t wait to see him in person!

  54. kat w says:

So, he’s just munching on the boo for entertainment, hmm? I didn’t think he could actually eat it yet. It is so fun to watch him kicking his little back feet and legs. They seem to be toys for him to play with. I wonder if he realizes yet they are actually attached to his body?? Gawsh, I wish I could hold him. Torture! Torture! Torture!!! Then when he’s on his back and spreads his legs wide open like he’s doing now, just like his ma does when she lays with him and there’s bearly enough room for her body, his little spotted tail is adorable!

Does he make noises while he’s playing by himself?

  55. Pat says:

I just got home and the first thing I’m doing is checking for the video and to see how our little man is doing. Sleeping of course!!! LOL. The video is soooooo cute and he is definately motoring around better.

Oh Wow………..It’s amazing how much he grows week to week…..It seems like only yesterday he looked like a stick of butter. Our little man is growing up so fast……

DoxieMom, once again, thank you so very much for your video. He sure is a Ham when your shooting him. LOLOLOL.

Thank you all!!!!!! Now I have to go feed all my babies (four legged).

  56. Dorothy Bain says:

I just watched the video and my goodness he is growing! For all of you out there, go to Facebook and become a Fan of the zoo. The video is usually posted there first.

    Moderator’s note: Here’s the Facebook page…

  57. sue Martz says:

Is it possible for him to get any cuter?? Doc., moderator, you are great with him. Our boy is growing by leaps and bounds.

  58. CHERYL says:

Isn’t it just wonderful- all of the love, caring, concern and adoration for this beautiful little panda. Wouldn’t it be nice if all the leaders of the world could watch this little baby and feel the love that so many people have for him. Maybe the world could finally not be at war and have peace. Yun Zi should be world peace ambassador. The little guy has sure brought alot of people together. It seems like one big humongous family-all wanting only the very best for him. What could happen if we all banded together for peace and love on earth?

  59. Dianne in Texas says:

Carol #46: Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll let you all know if I have any success.

  60. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide says:

    Hello all GPF
Thank again SDZ for the wonderful video – wow this little guy really has maximum cubitude – he really is so adorable and such a boy!
I see Wang Wang and Funi in 4 days – it is getting so exciting -apparently they have settled in well and Wang wang is a bit of a water boy – loves his waterfall.
I will report back after I see them – there may be some media coverage on Sunday 13 when their enclosure is officially opened by our Governor General
Moderator – just one question. The noises and squeaks that we hear during examinations – Does he make these sounds or any sounds when playing rough with Bai Yun??

Moderator’s note: I’ll ask. My office is not in the panda facility.

  61. Leslie says:

He’s too cute. I’m making a slideshow of the pictures from exams and occasional den pictures :) I can’t believe he’s already so big!

  62. Carolyn in MA says:

Latest video shows a most determined cub. Way too cute, and clearly packing on the pounds – good job Bai! DoxieMom, wonderful slideshow – and do I suspect a few doxies about the house? I am just in awe of those so at ease with “posting” and “uploading” and all this computer stuff!

  63. Panda Annie says:

Cute viedo and wow he is sooo big! Great post ;-)

  64. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

Wow….Liked watching the video it was as though Kathy turned Yunior’s on/off switch on from yawn to squirm…LOL…. :-) ;-) :-)
He almost should have a Red Carpet as he did his best Star Walk for the Pandarozzi in attendance for his Physical and seemed to pause and watch the flashes going off….. ;-0 :-) ;-) Any chance we might ever get a live broadcast of one of his next exams before he gets to big to handle?….. How do you get him to sit still to even weigh him? LOL ;-) :-) ;-)

Lynn was amazed on the telephone when I described his exam today, many thanks to all as today she was feeling a little under the weather but again thanks to all of the SDZ and GPF Family for their get well wishes as 11 months in the hospital this time along with the deterioration the last 8 years with her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease and over 250 Surgical Procedures minor to major these past years are taking their toll yet she still has a Positive Outlook on life helped by all of you and Yun Zi whom she now wants to see in person asap….Our next big hope is that she gets to come home for Christmas and gets to see Panda Claws and our mirror twin daughters Kendall & Tiffany…..

I hope to have an answer by the weekend on getting an English Language or Subtitled DVD of “Trail of the Panda – Disney” from Malaysia ….Will let everyone know what happens…….

“Panda Peace on Earth, Goodwill to all Life on Earth! :-) ;-) :-)

  65. Frances in NYC says:

Oh so cute, as always, but Kathy whisked him away so fast he didn’t have a chance to wave bye bye. Sleep tight, Yun Zi–more growing to do…xoxox.

  66. Britney says:

OOOOHHH He is sooooooooo adorable!! I just want to squeeze him!!! Here is a story about Yun Zi and the Vet.

    Yun Zi
    Vet 1

    Yun Zi: (Yawn Yawn)
Vet: ok your such a boy!
Yun Zi: (walk walk walk) Hey, I am a boy!! (squeak squeak) (rrrrf SQUEAK) (WALK WALK) I am going back to the Den!!! Bye hey take a picture of me!! Look look!!

  67. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Yikes!!!! Cuteness abounds! Thank you, SDZ.

    Jan #60, lucky, lucky you.

Does anyone personally know Santa? If so, please tell him I want a trip to SD for Christmas. Thank you.

  68. LH says:

Loved the latest vid – thanks!

    Question for Moderators:
Does Yunior purposely avoid gouging and scratching you with his claws (sort of like “giving you soft paws”) or are you all just skillful at avoiding them? Kathy seems to know the good holds for dodging claws, though as he gets more tumbly in your arms, those claws must get harder to work around.

    Thank you as always -

Moderator’s note: Kathy has years of experience in handling squirmy panda cubs. But those teeth are sharp and she has to be careful, and you probably saw how his claws grabbed the carpet!

  69. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Saw him being feisty on the evening news…..so had to check on-line…..
Guess he is teething on the bamboo…..or uses his paw. He did that last nite on his back. Looked like he was sucking his thumb! I would suppose he is a right hander.
Told lots of folks at a luncheon today to go check out the entire web site.

Chari, I feel for you son……had sinus infection almost 4 weeks ago and am still coughing.
Its something that is going around I understand. Hot water in a thermos by the bed at nite helps with the horrid tickle cough that occurs.

  70. Cyndee says:

Well…isn’t he well feed….Bai Yun is being a good mom. He is so adorable. Looked in on live cam this morning and no Yun Zi, Does Bai Yun take him to another area at night?

  71. Linda A. / NorCal says:

On Lin Ping , (sorry baby boy), I can’t get the link to stay up for the last couple of days. However, I found thai-panda.com is a website dedicated to her. Someone I think posted that already. There is a link to Panda TV which I heard was a 24 hour TV channel following Lin Ping. I was just watching, and the keepers had her outside on a climbing structure. They are more careful than human parents with their kids on a play ground for the first time. It’s a great outdoor area for her. And there is sound; not that I know what they are saying. Comments? Especially on the cam not staying on line?

  72. RLee says:

I’ve been a pandaholic for a long time and I’ve enjoyed reading all the comments on this blog. I “came out” with the birth of Tai Shan and have been fully engaged for every panda baby since Tai. I am alos an avid collector of “thing panda” and I wanted to offer Diane in Texas (#32) some assistance. I also suggest Ebay and Amazon but I want to add a staright Google for “panda bed sheets” – I found an item on my first try. Good luck in your search Diane.

  73. Liana in San Diego says:

Diane #32 – Wish I had granddaughters! I’d get them some too! My grandboys are “all boy” just like Yun Zi, into baseball and rocket ships!

Thanks Doxie Mom for the wonderful slide show. What a cutie pie he is, practicing to be a “BIG” boy!! And the video of the exam was just to adorable for words. Just want to eat him up, he’s so darned cute! Loved how he was out of it at first, then got into full commando mode almost right away, rarin’ to go and explore his environment. He sure is getting big!

Wonderful stuff – I’m so hooked!

I too adopted Yun Zi, and when the plush animal came I made the mistake of putting it on my bed. I can’t get it away from my cat, who has adopted the plush toy as her very own private pillow baby. It may even be that Abby thinks it’s one of her kittens… who knows. But she sure won’t let me take it away from her! She walks around the house with it carrying it by the scruff of its neck, and had a fit when one of the dogs tried to wrest it from her. This was HER baby, and she let them know it!

I know how she feels. Yun Zi is MY baby, and sadly I know I have to share him with all the rest of you gaga pandaholics! Ah me. At least we are all in love, and not out there being violent! Good thing, no?

Moderator’s note: It’s is a good thing! And thank you for adopting Yun Zi.

  74. Gabrielle says:

He IS all boy! From the black hair on his panda chest to his big paws. Yun Zi is a very handsome panda. I see he is even bigger than Mei Sheng. Wow! He is big cloud. He is cruising around now, fast. I am impressed. Good job Bai Yun and SDZ!

  75. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

Ok Kathy & Dr. Meg – don’t tell us you are not sneaking in an extra hug or so while you observe (?) Yun Zi walking :) :) He gets more lovable every week – and regardless of the comment he “is all boy”
Yun Zi is the 6th panda I’ve watched on the panda cams & while it’s hard to explain why male cubs are so different & so is the way momma pandas raise them. In a way you’d think that momma pandas would go “ok girls” I’ve taught you all I know – now you have go out into the wild, find a mate you can put up with for a few minutes, if you are lucky you become pregnant & deliver a 3-4 oz hairless, helpless cub in a tree trunk or a cave by yourself. You are all alone & it is days before you feel you can leave your newborn for any time at all. You are hungry & have to eliminate but your priceless cub comes first :) And so it goes for the next 18 months & we all pray that another cub survives in the wild :) But no, for some reason Momma pandas seem to “baby” their male cubs – yes, we know they can get into fights with other male pandas BUT here we have a female panda with a fragile cub (or even 2) all alone – she needs help.

  76. Margaret says:

Thanks for the update. Glad to know that “little man” is keeping pace with big brother Mei Sheng. Those milestones keep on passing by.

  77. KE says:

    I agree with Brenda Baxendale:
    December 10th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Little Yun Zi (and Bai Yun…) have been addicting to watch and have become great stress relievers for our office

I keep a tab open to the Panda Cam at all times and take many stress-breaks during the day. Thank you so much for giving us the wonderful gift of being able to watch Bai and Yun. :)

Has anyone seen Bai today? I’ve checked on and off since early this afternoon and baby Yun is the only one in the den.

  78. Linda says:

oh my – this is just too much! he is soooo adorable!!! he’s really starting to break away from the pack in terms of packing on the panda pudge :) and so much oomph to him! I have a plush panda that I have had for many years now who looks just like Yun Zi. Whenever I am watching Yunior and just have to cuddle him, I reach for my plush panda and pretend it is Yunior. Helps take the edge off! Kathy, you must be one of the most envied people in the world right now – I can’t imagine what it is like to go home from work every day after having contact with these beautiful pandas, especially knowing that you are helping such a precious baby grow.

  79. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Sorry to post again but I’ve found that the Panda TV from my previous link is live. I got the panda cam (Thailand) to work tonight, and the cam and TV are within a couple of seconds of each other. WOW, what fun. And I no longer feel badly about the “cage” which is normally shown on the cam; there’s other rooms attached, and a great outdoor area. I think someone posted that before (Mary?) but seeing is made me feel a lot better.

  80. Debi says:

I just watched the video. Oh my goodness. He just gets cuter by the minute!! I love him so much! I love watching him walk around like that and all the toys out for him. He seemed pretty excited and content to play for a while! I was wondering if as time goes on do the keepers and vets have to change to thicker, longer gloves so as not to get bit or scratched up while examining him? He is all boy and all bear and all curious! What a beautiful ball of fun!

  81. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

68 – Jan Cecchi from Adelaide – Hi Jan – see there is now discussion on how to pronounce the name – is it Wang Wang or Wong Wong :) According to what I read from my google alerts today the Chinese delegation said either was acceptable – the accent must depend on what area of the country one lives in. Whatever, can tell you are SO EXCITED – am waiting for your first hand update (am bouncing with excitement along with you :) :)

  82. Jane - Fairfield, VT says:

I wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to all my fellow Panda lovers / bloggers in regards to the prayers for my Father who was hospitalized on November 19 due to a severe acute pancreatitis attack. Although his heart and body were strong, the attack was too much for his body. He passed away on December 3, exactly 2 weeks after the illness began; he had never been sick prior to that.

While I was at the hospital, I would sneak peaks at the US Pandas to help me cope with this most terrible and trying time. I would have my Mom look at the Pandas, as well, to lift her spirits. These wonderful bears were, and continue to be, such solice and peace when experiencing such a huge loss.

The tremendous loss of my Father will tripple next year when I have to say good bye to Tai Shan (my 1st cubbie), Mei Lan and Su Lin.

Moderator’s note: I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Jane. I’m glad Panda Cam can be a source of comfort during such a difficult time.

  83. JJ says:

My day is complete after looking, smiling and laughing at this latest exam. OH! He’s just so adorable and I love the sounds he makes. He certainly knows what he wants to do, and you’d better not stand in his way. I think we’re all hugging him while watching the videos. Thanks again SDZ staff and keepers for keeping us updated on the little darling.

  84. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

OMG! Is it really possible that he just keeps getting cuter! He is a feisty little guy. I do not see Bai in the den with him much either but he sure is eating well! What a great mom. I am loving watching him play. I do notice that he seems to be scratching alot. Either he just noticed he can do this with his feet, or the boo is getting itchy, or he has fleas! Moderator, do they get fleas or flea treatments? I am just curious. thanks Doxiemom again for the videos and thanks SDZ for sharing this with us panda fans. I really want to just grab and hug this little guy, mommy Bai too if she would let me!
I really wish you moderator, could go in and give him a big squeeze, you deserve it for all your hard work!

Moderator’s note: I’ll forward your question to our Panda Team. I do know that some of our other animals get flea treatments, but not sure if the pandas do.

  85. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Moderator………YOU are working way too hard.

YZ finally woke up, and it looks like he is doing yoga. Way too cute.

  86. Frances in NYC says:

Thanks, Linda A. #71 for the info about Lin Ping TV, which is viewable by those of us with Macs, unlike the regular Thai zoo site.

But right now, I am laughing out loud watching Yun Zi rolling around in the den, communing with his feet, doing his yoga stretches, and generally being adorable. So cute so cute so cute.

  87. P Wong says:

    Conversation with Gao Gao #68

    Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
    Gao Gao: Hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: So I see you’re checking your catalog again.
G: Yes. Yun Zi’s putting in more orders.
    T: Wow, he’s some shopper.
G: It seems every time he has his exam, he requests new items.
T: So what’s going on now?
G: Look. He emailed some photos.
T: Wow. He’s wearing some mean looking plastic gloves.
G: Yep. Specially fitted for his paws and paw nails.
T: And he’s got his tape measure draped around his neck.
G: He’d like to measure everyone at his physical exams.
    T: And his vernier caliper.
G: Works better than his teeth.
T: That’s right, he’s still yet to get all his teeth.
G: How do you like his gray plastic gown.
    T: Uh, actually, it’s blue.
    G: Oh, that’s right. I ordered blue, didn’t I?
T: But the gloves are green.
G: Green? Oh, thanks for letting me know.
    T: You’re welcome.
G: I admit it’s hard for me to tell the difference.
T: The plastic shoe protectors are blue, though, so you’re good there.
G: And here’s the stethoscope and flashlight.
T: So he aspires to zoo animal vet practice?
G: Maybe later. First he wants to produce Zoo ER television series. Now the camera…

  88. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

YUN ZI’s feet are HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE. hahahahaha.

  89. kat Wilson says:

Can’t little cloud have a ball, or something to play with in his nursery, to keep him company while momma’s out and about? It looks kinda sad to see him play with a twig all day….(ha).

  90. kat Wilson says:

Mommy, mommy! Oh, thank you for coming back. .I was so lonely….I want to play with you! I want to hug your face and arms and kiss you on the nose and chew your cheeks…oh mommy, I love you….

  91. Lucilla says:

    Hi,

At 9 pm according to the Panda Cam clock on Dec 10, Yun Zi was flexing his muscles on Mommie. She was trying to catch some shut eye but he wanted to play. He climbed onto her and she then just let him rock and roll! As she skillfully moved him around, I swear I could see her smile! She looked gleeful at playing with her ‘all boy’ boy. And like all young tykes, he wanted the comfort of Mom but none of her fussiness and cleaning, just wanted to have a rollicking good time. Really cuteness to the nth level.

  92. pandafan-north says:

#73 Liana – I got a real kick out of the story about your cat and the plush panda – too funny!!

  93. Claudia says:

question, it looks like from the top view of the den, that Bai sort of sleeps sitting up sometimes, like my step dad ha ha, no I mean like she dozes off sitting up, then awakes to pull Yunior closer. Or is she just looking down? No wait I answered myself, its dark in there right so she is sleeping sitting up not just looking at him….

  94. Susan (UK) says:

#32 Dianne, I’ve found a website that has some gorgeous panda bedding. I don’t know if they do sheets but they certainly do duvet covers plus accessories. Hmmm, I’d love a set myself if they do a double size; it’s the postage that costs me! I hope you find something your grand-daughter would like.

I watched the video – cute as ever. He definitely did not like the tape measure, did he? DoxieMom, those clips are so lovely.

  95. XiethePiXie in San Diego says:

Saw our little Yun Zi on the local news this evening. He is such an active little guy when getting his exams! DoxieMom, thanks so much for the slide show; that’s terrific stuff, especially getting such close-up views! I guess teething babies are teething babies, no matter what the species. Thanks again to all who help care for these amazing creatures!

  96. Dianna says:

#77 KE: Eating my breakfast and checking on the pandas. (6:20 EST) .. They are both sleeping side by side in the exact same position. I get a kick out of the way they sleep sometimes. You don’t see their heads, they just look like big black/white lady bugs.

Moderator: I read the blog about the male polar bear killing the cub. (How sad is THAT story) Would male pandas ever exhibit the same behavior in the wild? Thank you!

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  97. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

For all of the GPF’s out there that wanted some soundbites you can hear the chirping and bleating of Gao Gao and Bai Yun if you go back to the Panda Mating video

Moderator any idea if this was for Yunior,ZZ,or Lin Lin’s conception ?
“Panda Peace on Earth,Goodwill to all Life on Earth”

Moderator’s note: That was the making of Yun Zi!

  98. Shirley Williamson says:

I saw #2 has the same name as me, I am also Shirley Ann. Just wanted to say we have a great name.
Now back to our precious boy, he is really moving around now, and so cute.
Thanks everyone for keeping us up to date, and all you video people, great videos.

  99. Maryellen from fla says:

Dear moderator, what do you say when someone new wants to know what you do for a living and what do they usualy say when you tell them? I’ll bet the reaction is fun. The questions keep coming for a long time?

Thank you for going into this line of work to keep us informed on bears, you are a great group!

    mem

Moderator’s note: It is fun to say I work for the San Diego Zoo. That always generates a good conversation!

  100. Dianna says:

Dear Moderator (or anyone else who has the answer) When Bai brings in all the bamboo so that it appears to be a forest growing in the den, does Bai eventually take it back out or do the keepers remove it?

Okay.. time to get to work before I get fired! :-)

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  101. Carolyn in MA says:

#9 JLew – forgot to add a welcome to you as well to my last entry. “Blogging” was a big step for me as well and this is the only website I blog on. EVERYONE is so wonderful and positive here, helping answer questions and passing on information. You’ll love it : )

  102. Sukochi Lee says:

I noticed in the timeline that one cub got her teeth at 50 days and our current little star not until 99 days. What causes that much more time difference in the developmnet of teeth? Does it have anything to do with the richness of Bai’s milk? Most of them had not gottern teeth until up in the third month.

I notice those attending the exams do their best to keep him on the carpet. Is there a reason for this? Might he pick up something off the floor and carry it back to his mon? Surely, that floor is so clean you, or he, could eat off of it!! Has a cub ever used that carpet as a potty while in for exam? It looks like so much fun to be able to play with that little cutie during his exam. Does Kathy ever what to keep him out longer? I would.

Moderator’s note: I’ll forward your questions to our Panda Team.

  103. Bobbie Wood says:

Loved the video of exam 15. When Yun Zi attempted to escape from the arms of Dr. Meg, I laughed outloud. He has learned from his play lessons with Momma Bai :) Also loved seeing Bai out on her climbing structure…I think on Wed. where she was reclining and looking skyward. What a beauty she is :) Today the SDZ is going to receive rain…can’t wait to see if Zhen and Su decide to show off in it….wish like the dickens that I could be there.

  104. Dee in Michigan says:

Love the videos – they are absolutely priceless – every one of them!
But I STILL can’t get over how BIG Yun Zi looks in the exam videos and how small he looks in the den! The den is obviously quite large but yet getting quite small for both Mom and son these days.
I’m so grateful for the SDZ having such a great website & wonderful Panda cam – Thank you so much!!

  105. Bernice in the Yukon says:

I just love the camera action and a huge thanks DoxieMom.

NZ was just tracking a racoon exploring the outdoor panda habitat…I would love to hang around to see any interaction between panda and racoon but I have to go to work.

  106. Lee in Vancouver says:

#71. Linda A. – I had the same problem with the CMZ site but today its back up and running normally. Have you noticed that Lin Ping has a black tip on the end of her tail just like Yunior. I wonder how many more pandas have this?

Video is great. Kathy, pulling rank each week now? You keep pulling the tough job of carrying Yun Zi in and out of his exams!

  107. Anne in NYC says:

Don’t know who Doxie Mom is but I sure am grateful for the wonderful videos she has posted of our new little chubster. Have also watched the Xi Lan postings again and again. I’m a confirmed pandaholic and have even converted a couple of friends. Thanks, DoxieMom and the great SDZ staff for hours of fun.

  108. deb says:

Congrats to Dennis Kelly on his new position. Washington’s gain is Atlanta’s loss.

  109. Sandra says:

Loved the new video of our chubbie cubbie. Yun Zi is so facinating to watch. Although I love both the girls, Mei Sheng was always my favorite panda. Now his brother is running a very close second.

  110. Marti from California says:

Thank you so much for the slide show DoxieMom that was so very nice of you. He is a hand full now but just sooooooooooooo cute. Kathy, pretty soon you won’t be able to hold him at the rate he’s growing. LOL

I love him to death. Hugs and kisses to all that take care of our adorable Boy.

    THE PANDA FAN

  111. Marie says:

He is SITTING UP today! That’s the first time I have seen him sit up!! :-)

  112. ei says:

Look at our little bruiser sitting there “eating” his bamboo like a big boy! (12:15 EST) He really is going beyond cute today!

Looking at the weight comparisons, I never realized just how “petite” Su Lin was. I’m wondering now if there was ever any concern because she was small, or was it just attributed to taking after her Dad?

  113. Diana says:

So why do I watch these videos over and over and over?!?! This is all so fascinating. I wonder, too, how the keepers and vets can remain clinical and professional in the midst of spending time with such cuteness! We panda fans are so fortunate to have visual access to this spectacular world. And without our moderators and blog writers, we’d be lost for sure! Thank you!

  114. Cheryl says:

Yes P. Wong — I believe our little man Yun Zi has some great things in store for him — and he certainly seems to love the camera. Very cute — I can just imagine him all decked out in his gown, gloves and measuring tape. LOL

  115. sue Martz says:

Mr Wiggles is on the move. Watch out world! Thanks SDZ!

  116. Pamela G says:

This was the first Panda poem I wrote; Su Lin was so small and cautious, I wondered if she would ever leave the den. Then it seemed one day she went straight from the den up a tall tree and spent most of her time up there. I figured Bai Yun had told her all about the Panda Dream while in the den……

    Cub Dream

See the little Panda cub, high up in the trees
Asleep in cradling branches rocked by Springtime’s errant breeze?

Does she dream of misty mornings that reflect the light of day,
Of the clear, clean air of Panda Home, lost and far away?

For every Panda mother tells every Panda child
Of the dream that every Panda dreams, of living free and wild.

Of the mountains’ bamboo forests where bears are free to roam,
And their children’s children’s children will return to Panda Home.

So dream the Panda Dream, Su Lin, high up in your trees,
And catch the scent of Panda Home on Springtime’s errant breeze.

Moderator’s note: Thank you for sharing this one again, Pamela G!

  117. Dianna says:

Wow…. those poems are good! I agree with whoever suggested they should be published…..

  118. Lee in Vancouver says:

Linda A #71 – that new panda site, thai-panda dot com asked me if they could post my pictures tht I took last year at CMZ. I said yes and if you click on ‘photos’ at the top you can see them. I never did get them up on flickr. One of these days I’ll figure out how to do it.

  119. barbara says:

Pamela G, Thank you. you have made my day, i forgot about that one. Bless you.

  120. Zach says:

Yun Zi was being beary funny again this morning. (Idea for a name for Bai Yun’s next baby that might be fathered by Gao Gao, we have Yun Zi, which means son of a cloud, now something for Gao Gao to honor his success!

  121. Margaret says:

Interesting that Dennis Kelly, CEO of Zoo Atlanta is moving to become head of NZP in DC. He will bring a different relationship with the Chinese to NZP, as well as successful breeding and birth of two panda cubs. In the latest announcement ZA said that Mr. Kelly suggested to the ZA board at the final 2009 board meeting that they approve the 5 year agreement to keep Lun Lun, Yang Yang, and Xi Lan at ZA for 5 years. Apparently the agreement is similar to SDZ’s current 5 year extension agreement. It also said that Mei Lan is going to China in Feb 2010. That is approximately when Xi Lan will be weaned, so I guess they will need the space for him to be independent panda. Now it looks like Tai Shan in January, Mei Lan in February, and Su Lin in ?, 2010.

  122. Margaret says:

Beautiful Pamela G, #116, and also appropriate for Su Lin now since she will soon be leaving for Panda Home and teaching her own panda cubs the Panda Dream.

  123. Gabrielle says:

I appreciate the keepers having confidence in Bai Yun. Their confidence has been well rewarded, I would say. I am watching a tender moment between Bai Yun and Yun Zi. Earlier I got to see Yun Zi sit up and chew on some straw. Impressive!!! It is a pleasure to watch them as I am going about my daily activities. One eye on my work, one eye on the pandacam, so to speak.

  124. rita says:

Yun Zi just walked out to the garden room! He may have done it before, but it’s the first time I’ve seen him do it.

  125. Dee says:

Our boy is in the classroom exhibit. Yeah!!! The big explorer.

  126. Debi says:

I just saw Yun Zi poking his face out into the classroom and desperately trying to figure out how to get over that ledge and down into it, but he has disappeared! Poor little guy! That is a long walk from the den and many ledges to get over or hurdle! He looks like he is so curious and dying to go out and play with boo and dirt and see the sky!

  127. Dee says:

I should probably clarify the previous entry. As far as I can tell, he made it out to the classroom exhibit by his little self. I could be wrong.

  128. Char says:

Hi Rita #124. My first time seeing the baby in the garden room also. Oooohhhh just like watching your teenager drive away for the first time! Growing up tooooooooooo fast. :-)

  129. Pandafan#2 says:

I really want to know the names (and genders) of Hua Mei’s twins, because I’ll use them for (hopefully) making a family tree of the pandas. Does Yun Zi want to be a doctor when he grows up? A photographer? A black belt? So many interests! Moderator, if you don’t work in the zoo, it must be good exercise to go to the zoo. (Or do you take your car?)

  130. Marion (Scotland) says:

I think Yun Xi is just at the edge of the classroom exhibit. clever boy.

  131. DoxieMom says:

New video posted of Yun Zi and Bai in the den early this morning!

At the beginning, both are asleep, Bai shifts just a bit and Yun Zi wakes up. Bai does not. Yun Zi takes advantage of his sleeping mother and climbs Mt. Mommie!!

“Yun Zi’s Sneak Attack on Bai!”
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8CJJHDpy2I

Pamela G. #116, beautiful poem, very sweet. The Exam 15 Video was excellent! he’s on the move and an armful for Kathy. Loved his sleepy eyes, and sharp squawk when they measured his neck!

  132. Frances in NYC says:

Well, well–I come back from my errands, and there’s Yun Zi in the classroom! Seemed like he wanted to go through that doorway to escape back to his den. Oh now there he is, pestering Bai while she’s eating her bamboo! Postcard, postcard, postcard! He’s awake and playing outside. Another milestone!

Thanks, Pamela G, for your poem. I became a panda fan when Zhen Zhen was born, so I have some catching up to do with your work.

  133. Dee in Michigan says:

Can anyone describe how Bai Yun treated her female cubs different than her male cubs? Thanks!

  134. lainie says:

So ,little man is out in the “classroom exhibit” with mom, as the camera # says. Does this mean Bai took him out on exhibit ? Is he out there for all to see, or is this area closed off to the public ?

Moderator’s note: The classroom exhibit is currently closed.

  135. Nancy S. Pandagirl says:

OMG!! Yun Zi is getting so big! I can’t wait to see him in person! My friends and I were there for the Naming Ceremony and had a great time! We were able to see Su Lin and Zhen Zhen. Please let us know when our big Roly Poly Boy is introduce to the public! I can’t wait!!

  136. Margaret says:

Today was the first time I got to see our little guy out with Mom…. Is it normal for Mom to push him away? Is he hungry?, we know she eats all day. It’s great seeing him outside…. Thank you.

  137. Char says:

Multi tasking mama holding boo in one hand and gently pushing baby with the other – I’m laughing so hard!!

  138. Pat says:

OMG……..this is the first time I’ve seen Bai and Yun in the Classroom Exhibit……..what a treat! Yun is playing in the boo while Bai is eating it…………………….Wow…….just adoreable…..got a few great postcard shots………

  139. Dianna says:

Char #137: I saw the same thing when I sneaked a peak here at work. It was too funny… Did you see Yunior roll over when she pushed him back?

  140. Lee in Vancouver says:

I took lots of postcards of the event but missed how he got back to the den. Mom take him or did he walk?

  141. Dianne in Texas says:

#32 Diane: Yeah, grandaughters are great, fun to shop for (sometimes difficult), but boys are so easy! ;) #87 P Wong: Once again you’ve created a masterpiece. But then your subjects are such masterpieces. :) #72 RLee: thanks for the tip. #105 Bernice: Not to question your knowledge of animals, but NZ has a cam for their Red Pandas, which they sometimes switch to, if they’re out and about. Their faces have kind of a raccoon look. And, yet, there are some wild animals that make their way onto the zoo’s grounds.
#116 Pamela G: Thank you so much posting that poem. Your poems are so beautiful, with such feeling for the panda’s lives, and because they are so close to our “panda hearts”. I nearly always get a little teary with the sentiments. I am so glad you are back on the blog. #82 Jane: I extend my condolences to you and your family for the loss of your dad. Having lost my parents, though many years ago, I understand your pain. It is very difficult, losing a parent.

Moderator: #88 Liz Panda Stalker mentioned Yuni’s huge feet. Is that relevant to his eventual size as an adult panda?

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  142. Shirley says:

Doxiemom, did you capture the excursion into the classroom today?

  143. Shirley says:

Question for panda team- I noticed in the last exam video that Yun Zi is pigeon-toed in the rear. Is that the way most panda babies walk?

  144. Cheryl says:

Pamela G — it is a beautiful as the first time I read it — and still get tears in my eyes. Thank you for sharing your poem with us again — and here’s wishing you and yours a very happy holiday. It is so nice to have you back in our virtual world… keep us posted on how you are — and feel free to resend us more of your beautiful poems. I still love Santa Paws — it’s simply amazing!

  145. Mary from Brooklyn says:

Pandafan#2 – Hua Mei’s family tree can be found on pandasliveon.com.

  146. DoxieMom says:

2 New videos posted of Yun Zi and Bai in the Classroom Exhibit this afternoon!

It starts with Yun Zi making it up and over the bedroom step into the sunroom. Next we see him and Bai Yun in the classroom exhibit!

The links for “Yun Zi’s Classroom Time! Part 1″ and “Yun Zi’s Classroom Time! Part 2″ are:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86NedAS0BGk
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fM4uBVD5GE

Lee #140, looking at the footage, it is unclear how Yun Zi got out to the classroom exhibit once he got over the step to the sunroom, or how he got back to the den! I think I saw Bai pick him up toward the end, but they were behind shrubery and her back was to the camera, so it was hard to tell. Next thing you saw was Yun Zi crawl into the den by himself.

  147. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#116 -Pamela G. More tears -happy ones though :)

  148. Bobbie Wood says:

Hurray! I was very fortunate today! I checked the panda-cam around noontime and Oh My Gosh! Bai and Yun were both outside in the classroom!!! I grabbed my camera and sat in front of my monitor and filmed their ‘lunch-date’ :) I’ve made a movie for you all :)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIqr_ORMNuE

What fun! Watch Bai’s left arm….She has ‘the-paw-move’ working :)

  149. Brandy NY says:

Hi everyone. Hello new commers. Phyliss are you out there? Since I only started here in Aug. just after Yuior was born I never heard of Pamela G. until another wonderful Panda Family member was kind enough to post and share her poems. My, My, My. Thats what I said after reading Panda Claus. Then I listened to Lun Lun’s Lullabye. Now Cub Dreams. Nothing but chills after chills which I don’t need since its 17 degreesa outside. But on a serious note I am in such awe of her words. The depth you could feel them. I just can’t find the words to justify how humbled I am with your talent. My humbled gratitude to you:) Would you mind if I ask you what part of the world you are from? I want to give you all a good laugh. Being I could only share this with you guys. It was a few nights ago that I read Panda Claus. Last night I had a very vivid dream. Beautiful dream. It was outside some where and it was snowing. Trees all around. I heard this woman speaking and I walked further and saw many children. A nun in black with some white hair comimg out of her head piece reading Panda Clause to them. I asked who she was and I was told She was Pamela G. This is true and yes you can laugh. But I woke with such a feeling of calm I can’t discribe. For my own piece of mind, are you a Nun? If not see how you effected me. Awake and asleep. If and when your sence of poetry kicks in and something in me says it will, your words would be a great addition to DoxieMom’s slide show. Can you all imagine that! If it doesn’t come you can always sit back and remember what you have given a great many of people. Something most of us will never accomplish. The person behind this poetry is an extrodenary person and to know you even through this blog is an honor. My heartfelt thank yous for filling my heart with GLEE.

  150. Danielle, NY says:

    # 146 DoxieMom, thank you so much for the two videos of Yun Zi and Bai Yun in the classroom. I am sure Yun Zi will learn quickly that it is something to climb on his mom when she sleeps; it is an entirely different story when he tries to interrupt her while she is eating!!

  151. jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia says:

Good Morning (Australian time) to our wonderful GPF
Maureen #81 – I believe the pronunciation is as you thought Wong Wong (for Wang Wang) and Fu Ni ( for Funi)
Thanks for bouncing up and down with me – it really is getting so exciting – 3 days exactly and I will be there – I can hardly wait
A local fashion designer ( Lisa Emmanuelle) has designed an outfit for each panda with their names on the back ( on plush toys of course ( a beautiful rich deep pink for Funi and Royal Blue for Wang Wang) so of course I have bought them for me – it will be the closest I get to a panda hug

Panda Peace and love to you all

  152. Brandy NY says:

Just saw Bobby woods and DoxieMom’s videos. Just had to come back. I missed all of this. What a wonderful sho. Bobby lovely music. Is it you months ago said you were from Rhinebeck N.Y? If so we are neighbors. Bai shoving him away. Yet another new stage. Funny to see because we are not used to seeing her do something like that. But again she knows what she is doing and we are all along for the ride. It begins. Moderator, hello. When Yunior comes out of the den, will there still be a cam for us to watch where he is?

    Moderator’s note: Yes indeed.

  153. Shirley says:

Thanks Doxie Mom. That was darling. I can just hear little Yun Zi saying, “Aw Mom, if you won’t play with me, can I at least have some boo?”

  154. TAMI MICHAUD says:

wow!!!!!!!! here we go…… i was so happy to see him conquer the steps from the den and out to the class room….his life will never be the same… i was feeling badly for our little guy…i bet he dreamed himself through it and now he can do it!!!

yun zi: yea i are a big boy!!!!!!!!

it’s funny i was headed for the zoo (sdz) tommorrow just because i felt he eould be out and maybe they would pull s few humans aside to test bai and yuns’ reaction.
i abanded the idea because yun seemed stuck at that door……see you never know…..

  155. Gabrielle says:

Thank you Doxiemom for all the videos you get us. I enjoy them so much. I appreciate all the effort you put into getting us the videos. Thank you Bobbie Wood for your video, as well. I enjoyed them both. Thank you for sharing with us all.

  156. Heidi in AZ says:

Bobbie Wood – thanks for sharing the video! I watched the time lapse and saw that he was outside so I came running to the blog to see if anyone had posted a video. I’m SO addicted. Thank you!!!

  157. Heidi in AZ says:

And now I found DoxieMom’s two videos – great! I burst out laughing when she shoved him aside; I know how she feels with 3 kids of my own!

  158. Bobbie Wood says:

Doximom # 146: You really captured the entire adventure in the classroom today!!! I really think Yun Zi walked out to the classroom by himself because, Bai knew her lunch was waiting, and as you captured, nothing disturbs Bai’s lunch :) Also, the early morning session with Yun Zi climbing all over momma was so much fun to watch. :)
PWong #87: Loved the shopping conversation :)
Pamela G #116: Your poems are beautiful!
To all: If you go to Pandas Live On, there is a poem written by Pamela G and right below it is a panda to click on which will get you to Pamela’s Flicker site where you will find even more of her poetry. Enjoy!!!
I found this link this morning….Have a kleenex handy because these works are beautiful!

  159. Heidi in AZ says:

Moderators, I know we’re being pests about this subject, but what are some of the signs that you watch for to determine that Yun Zi is ready for his public debut? Please humor us and share! ;-)

Moderator’s note: I’ll have to forward your question to our Panda Team.

  160. Reenie in Atlanta says:

Jan #151…..I know how excited you are! When LunLun and YangYang came to Atlanta, it was unbelievable! And the first time I ever laid eyes on them in person…unforgettable. Enjoy it all!

YunZi’s lesson in the Classroom Exhibit: NOTHING comes between a Panda and the boo! Not even 17 lbs of cute pudginess.

  161. maryjane says:

explain Doxiemom..to us who do not know what that is??????????????????

  162. Jessica Texas says:

My mom and I watch Yun Zi and Bai Yun every chance we get! They make our day. I have watched Yun Zi since he was a week old, and he gets cuter by the day. We love when Bai Yun comes in the den and picks him up in her arms, and she still does it to this day, even though he’s getting so big! He’s such a cutie, and I can’t for many more precious moments!

  163. panda-luver says:

he has grown up so fast! it feels like he was just born yesterday

  164. Lucilla says:

    Dear GPFs,

I wonder if any of you saw this Japanese produced documentary called Panda Diary. It uses a voice over for a Giant Panda Bear who was in the process of being sent from China to Japan. It uses his journey as the basis to showcase the work of the Woolong facility. Yes, you can see the Panda Kindy so to speak and how they look after the pregnant Mums etc.

It has a lyrical animation segment that discusses the history of pandas too. Maybe a nice Christmas prezzie for yourself or another Panda Fan.

    Panda Love to all

  165. Judy Wagner says:

I will be making my annual visit to the zoo on Dec.24th. Will the new baby be ready for public viewing by then? I have managed in past years to catch all the newborns and am hoping this year will be no exception.

Moderator’s note: We don’t have a date set for his public debut. Sorry!

  166. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#136 – Margaret – Momma pandas can seem to be very mean & selfish when they are eating & their cubs either want to share mom’s food (a no no) or play. Yes. momma loves her cub,but NO, NO, she will NOT SHARE either her bamboo or any treats. All mom pandas seem to have perfected using one of the arms or legs as a”push away” tool – Mom lays on her back munching her bamboo or treat & you’ll see her “pushing her cub away with one of her arms or legs” . Mom does not share & will also try to steal any treats her cub may get – which is why when a cubs gets older you’ll see them try to hide their treats from mom :)

  167. Pat says:

I love watching our little man wake up, start fussing on his back, and gnawing on his back feet. LOL………………
    He’s just adoreable………………….

I have a question please……………at his age now, how often is BaiYun feeding him now???

Moderator’s note: I’ll forward your question to our Panda Team.

  168. Linda A. / NorCal says:

First of all, Pamela G, you ROCK. Now I know where I get my dream of seeing a panda in the wild. After reading your poems over the years, you have inspired me. Thank you. You perhaps inspired the song in ZZ’s “panda tales” video.

Jane #82, so, so sorry for your loss. Heart-felt prayers are all yours.

    P. Wong, #87, how do you do it? Great job once again.

DoxieMom, what can I say to you????? But thank you.

Lee, #118, so cool. I will check it out in a minute. Cool website, hunh? And I love the black spot on her tail. She’s a cutie.

Now, Big Boy, it’s all about you. Classroom time; aren’t you the brave one. I haven’t had much time today to watch but I did see your big adventure. You obviously know how very cute you are, and how many admirers you have. Thank you for never disappointing us!

  169. Jane Cartwright says:

    This is for Brenda #17

FYI to your class—- Hua Mei is now a mother seven times over. When she was young , the zoo released a video entitled ” Hello World” which is probably available on CD now. It is well worth the money. I also have a cute art idea using sponges and black paint that I will share if you want.

  170. Aunt Nancy says:

Our big Yun Zi is sooo cute! Right now, the camera is being shot from directly above, he’s sitting up straight, looking all grown up, pretending to be eating his boo. He keeps tipping over but he gets right back up, and at it. It reminds me of those little Fisher Price people/animals… the Weebles. Remember? Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down!

  171. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#151 – jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia – Hi there Jan- I should know better but am so excited for you – it is now Fri. 9:15pm EST (Dec. 11th) here in Mich. – so from what I understand you are 24 hours ahead of us – does that mean your pandas are now on exhibit or is there one more day – whatever – Jan – I am so excited for you -to see a Giant Panda is the thrill of a lifetime

  172. Pamela G says:

Brandy (149) ; No, my dear, I am most definitely not a nun! I’m just a doddering little old lady who used to kick up her heels and could write a little. I fell in love with the Pandas when Tai Shan and Su Lin were born, then developed a profound respect for the Panda mothers, and unbounded admiration for the all of the personnel who care for these wonderful creatures.
I am very glad that my little rhymes give you pleasure. Thank you for your very kind words.

  173. Char says:

Dianna #139: Yes I did see him roll over but he sure didnt stay away for long. That whole thing with mama pushing him away must have gone for 15 or 20 minutes. I’ve been totally enchanted of course with all his antics but this one just took the cake!! He was not going to be deterred!!

  174. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#151 – jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia – Hi there Jan- I should know better but am so excited for you – it is now Fri. 9:15pm EST (Dec. 11th) here in Mich. – so from what I understand you are 24 hours ahead of us – does that mean your pandas are now on exhibit or is there one more day – whatever – Jan – I am so excited for you -to see a Giant Panda is the thrill of a lifetime :)

  175. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Lee #118, GREAT pics. Now you are an international publisher! Lucky you on a great trip.

  176. Dee in Michigan says:

#82 Jane – I’m so sorry you lost your Father. My Mother had the same acute pancreatitis atttack 12+ years ago, managed to survive it but hasn’t been healthy since. She had a 2nd attack 2 years later, but less severe. It’s been downhill ever since and she’s under Hospice care now. My prayers are with you and your family. This wonderful family of Pandas at the SDZ will surely help soothe your grief over the coming months as they help so many of us. What a blessing these cubs are…….they get us through so much!

  177. Gabrielle says:

And thank you Pandacam Operator for getting us the footage of Yun Zi and Bai Yun out and about.

  178. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

The classroom escapade today was soo cute. I did find it hard to believe that Bai kept swatting her baby away while she tried to eat. She seemed a bit rough with him. I know she knows what she is doing but, she really swatted him away. I guess you never go near a bear while they have a cub or when they are eating! I too wondered how he got back to the den, he was having a good time exploring and playing out there. He even appeared to be trying to climb. I guess he will be out soon.
Doxiemom, I loved the video of cubbie climbing on Bai while she slept, it is cute how she finally gets up and just watches him. Most times she does appear to adore her little guy. (Except when she is eating!) He is starting to finally stay awake for longer periods of time. What a handful this little guy is for mommy, hope she is ready for it!

  179. Mary in SF says:

Oh Jan!!! I am so excited for you :-) You **will** come back and give us a complete report with all the details….right?

  180. Frances in NYC says:

As Yun Zi grows up and becomes even more persistent in trying to play with Bai while she’s eating, or with what she’s eating, you will marvel at her variety of “swat” or “talk to the paw” techniques. It’s amazing that he started right in, though we haven’t seen them in some of their overnight outdoor forays, so maybe the “pestering” has been going on for a while.

Jan, I join everyone else in virtually jumping up and down with you! Happy panda viewing!

  181. Susan (UK) says:

#82 Jane, my condolences on the sad loss of your Father.

#151 Jan, before I read the rest of your sentence about designer clothes for your new pandas I was imagining these two bears proudly showing off their new colours! Looking forward to your ‘new panda’ report.

#172 Pamela G, I cannot imagine you being a doddery old lady!

Bobbie Wood and DoxieMom, we are being so wonderfully spoilt with all these gorgeous videos. Keep it up, please.

Does anyone know if Panda Tales will ever be released for us to buy?

  182. Jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia says:

Hi Mary #179, Maureen #174 and Reenie #160 and every other GPF in this world
Thank you all for the best wishes – I really can’t wait to see wang Wang and Funi
I will be seeing them at 8.15 am on Tuesday 15/12 Adelaide time – which I think is about 16 hours ahead of San Diego time so not sure about Atlanta.
I know I always miss Yun Zi’s early morning antics because it is the middle of our night
Anyway, I promise to get online and let you all know as soon as I get home on Tuesday. Panda love to you all

  183. Lee from San Francisco says:

#148 Bobbie Wood – What a movie! Soundtrack is awesome…

It has to be Yun, it has to be Yun…….. la la la la….. la la la la….la la la la

Something tells me it must be Yun, something tells me it must be Yun, all of my life……

or something to that effect :) :) :)

Also nice to hear your voice and someone who seems to be enjoying watching Yun Zi grow up as much as you do, ehem….. we all do!

Would be nice to receive a downloaded music. Hint, hint, hint: Google

    E. Lee Zhou

  184. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

151 – Jan Cecchi from Adelaide…..Are you counting down the minutes and seconds until the exhibit opens ? I see they now have their own exclusive web-site with a lot of neat info and downloads…..Keep your GPF Family advised on the exhibit and how seeing them in person was… :-) ;-) :-) http://www.wangwangandfuni.com/

Does anybody know what is happening with Oakland Zoo’s Panda Exhibit and if they are getting a pair of Pandas? It would be nice if we add another USA Site to our Pandaholic Nation , as I guess the Zoo in Omaha couldn’t raise the funds needed to get Pandas….. ;-) :-) ;-)

Pamela G….I got a chance to read all your Flickr Panda Poetry …. A Must read for all Pandaholics ….. We hope you can again write your Poems , as the fact that we soon lose 3 Pandas back to China your Poetry helps …Hang in there as a lot of GPF’s Family and Friends can relate to the diversity you’re going thru….I wish one of the GPF Pandaholics works in the Publishing Business and could publish your work as on flickr…
    :-) ;-) :-)
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/32448872@N00/sets/72157603999808739/

DoxieMom : Many Thanks for your Videos as my Wife Lynn already knows that she will be able to catch up on Yunior when she hopefully gets out of the Medical Facility in Ithaca,NY to hopefully Home for X-mas or at least closer to home, as I’ve described the videos to her over the telephone to her Hospital Bed….And they as well as our growing GPF Families Comments and Get Well Wishes are keeping Lynn’s Spirits up….
    ;-) :-) ;-)

A great Double Buddha vision of a nursing Yun Zi and Bai Yun at 4:55 AM SDZ Time….They bearly (sic) fit in the den now as Yunior is growing bigger and cuter by the minute, as the Pandaholic GPF Family and Friends grows as well….. :-) ;-) :-)

“Panda Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All Life on Earth”

  185. Jenny Lee says:

Pamela G, your poem is so beautiful, thank you for sharing. DoxieMom, your video are great, I am just can’t control laughing when seeing some of them. And Frances, is that you who post lots of panda pics in flickr? I just can not see which pic is my favorite, beacause they are all great, thank you.

  186. Helen Rainier says:

Saturday morning 5:57 am PST – Momma Bai is busy “redecorating” the den while Yunior is fast asleep. That’s the only time a mother can get anything done is when baby is asleep!

  187. Margot says:

Re Bai swatting the cub away when she’s eating: I remember seeing videos of Bai Yun doing the same thing to Mei Sheng and Su Lin, in fact seeing the other U.S. mother pandas doing it, too. I think it must be a survival instinct: Momma needs to eat so the baby can eat. Nursing a robust cub like Yun Zi takes a lot of milk.

  188. Lucilla says:

Seeing Doxiemom and Bobbie Wood’s videos, NOTHING get between a lady Panda Mommy and her boo, NOTHING. Bai Yun has really perfected that ‘Side Swipe’ paw move to block cubs…She is such a beautiful beautiful funny wise mommy panda.

Doxiemom – Thanks for all the videos!

  189. Debi says:

    Yun Zi playing “Jungle Panda”

“I swish the boo, I dig the boo, I crunch the boo, I bite the boo, grrr, oooh, scary me! I smack the boo, I step on the boo, I roll on boo, I fall down on the boo (hee hee…), I wack the boo, I shake the boo, I am big scary boo bear, I sleep on the boo, I…I….zzzzzzzz”

  190. jeanneb says:

    Linda:

    I found it distressing, too.

Then I convinced myself she was saying: “Go play, dear little boy. Mommy’s making your dinner.”

  191. Pamela G says:

I wrote this after Su Lin was old enough to go climbing trees. I wanted to remember the sense of closeness that she and Bai had in the den…and to remind us of how fleeting that time is.

    Bai Yun’s Lullabye

Hush, tiny Panda cub. Rest here in my arms.
I’ll feed you, and warm you, and keep you from harm.

Sleep, tiny Panda cub. Sleep and grow strong.
I’ll whisper Panda secrets, for I will not have you long.

Wake, little Panda cub. Open your sealed eyes.
You’ve known only darkness, now watch your first sunrise.

Move, little Panda cub. Crawl around the den.
Soon it will be time to leave. I will tell you when.

Walk, little Panda cub. Come and follow me.
We are going out today. So many things to see!

Play, growing Panda cub! Climb and roll and run!
Let the watchers marvel at this small child of Bai Yun!

Go now, grown-up Panda child, go and make me proud.
Remember what I taught you, and remember your White Cloud.

Sleep now, tiny Panda cub, all this is yet to be.
For now, there’s just the den, and milk, and warmth, and you and me.

  192. jeanneb says:

Hmmm. That post showed up different than I typed it. I didn’t do italics.

    Does this board use HTML?

Moderator’s note: Too technical for me! But your previous comment had some weird italic coding that I’ve removed.

  193. KPanda says:

Someone asked about mothers and sons and how the mothers are different than with their daughters.

Panda mothers seem to spend more time with their sons, from the beginning. More cradling, more cleaning (it’s how so many people guessed he was a boy before his first exam), more playing, more checking, more tolerance, more patience than the mothers show their female cubs. (I’ve suspected that they even try to keep the boys from walking sooner.) This may seem like a sexual stereotype, but I think the facts bear it out. It’s subtle, but they just treat them differently.

Maybe someone knows why this is, sometimes it seems that they have more to teach the boys than they do the girls. I can remember thinking that when Zhen Zhen was 6 months old she would have been ready to be weaned if it wasn’t for the pesky need for mom’s milk!

  194. Linda A. / NorCal says:

“Don”t want to close my eyes, don’t want to fall asleep because I miss you, Babe, and I don’t want to miss a thing.” My dedication to Yun Zi.

  195. Deana says:

I just love Pamela G. s poems. I tear up and cry when I read them. Thank you for sharing Pamela. Hope that you are feeling much better. I hadn’t had the privilidge to read your poems until now as I am a newcomer to the blog. I am so glad you are sharing your poetry with us. Take care Pamela.

  196. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

i realize there is no such thing as a stupid question but here goes: DO THE PANDAS EAT EVERYTING FROM THE BAMBOO? LEAVES AND STALK?

Moderator’s note: See our panda fact sheet and the post Food for Thought for bamboo info.

  197. Pam C. says:

I’m seeing Yun Zi playing outside for the first time. Our baby is growing up!

  198. Lisa in Colorado says:

Too cute watching Yun Zi trying to climb that branch. He is growing way too fast! (I say that about my 6 year-old too.) Almost as funny was Bai picking him up and taking him away. She is one strong, in charge, mama.

  199. Georgie from PA says:

Just watched the cutest thing! Yun Zi is climbing the low branches of one of the trees near Mommy.
He goes up a little way, then tumbles to the ground.
Such a Big Boy…….he’s so adventurous..and so proud of himself.
Bai Yun keeps watching ever alert..she took him down once…just like a Mom!

I hope Doxie Mom was able to recapture this…it’s really great!

Could the Moderator or someone more knowledgable than I tell me what part of the Panda enclave this is in? Thank you.

Moderator’s note: It sounds like he was out in the classroom exhibit.

  200. Cheryl says:

Did yall see that? Bai kicked him out~~ LOL …well she picked him up and put him out there in the sunshine~~ :)

  201. Margot says:

I think Yun Zi might be having a Muddy Day like Su Lin had when she was tiny. Can’t wait to see Momma give him his bath later.

  202. Barbara in Midwest says:

Pamela G, thanks for reprinting your poems. They have warmed me for years. This last one is so appropriate today–you must have known something–for Bai has taken Yuni outside for the first time!

  203. Cheryl says:

I am concerned. What just happened with our little Yun Zi. Bai kept trying to get him to follow her. But he didn’t appear to like it out in the sunshine.

Question: Is this a normal process. Is his eyesight sensitive to sunlight? She moved him. Each time he was out there, he laid down like he wanted Bai to pick him up and take him back into the den. But she moved him again. And she’d walk by him like she wanted him to follow her. Is she trying to train him? I am worried about our little boy.

    Donna? What do you think?

  204. kat Wilson says:

Okay, I have to admit, unfortunately, I can’t watch 24/7, maybe 18/7, anyway, little cloud is outside with the trees and rocks and bushes! Ma dropped him down about 10 minutes ago and walked away… is this his first introduction to his new world?? Well, he’s taking full advantage of it, that’s for sure, sniffing and wandering around. He looks so, so little in that big, new world of his, but how exciting for him, and us to view this extraordinary experience for him. Ma’s no dummy, it’s time he knows the bigger world, outside the warm and cozy nursery. All the same, he looks kinda cold. Maybe Ma should put baby in a sweater next time they venture out.

  205. Cheryl says:

Now you’ve locked him out of the den and the camera is on Zu Lin.

Hey now. He is my little boy too ya know. Bai might be trying to wein him but i’m not. He’s still mine~~~

Doxie, where are you? We might need to pull up our socks!! :-)

  206. Cheryl says:

    DOXIE!

What is going on with Yun Zi? Mama is in the den… but little boy is locked out. Doxie, I’m 3000 miles away. Get over there and help our little boy.

  207. Cheryl says:

Having a panic attack here yall!

  208. Sylvie says:

I have been watching him since he was born…. hes sooooo cute… love watching him grow

  209. kathy, canada says:

Pamela G: One of my favorite of your poems is Bai Yun’s Lullabye and what an appropriate choice for today as we have been watching Yun Zi outside with Bai exploring the outdoors with such curiosity! Thank you again for sharing your beautiful gift with us.

  210. Jane - Fairfield, VT says:

#191 – Pamlea G – that is one of the most beautiful poems I have read regarding our beautiful Pandas. Thanks.

    Hi
I really hope somone is there to answer a big big question I have! What is Bai doing with her baby??? We all
know she is a wonderful mother…But I can not understand what I am seeing on the screen! It is about 12:00
in the PM in Ca. Does Bai have him outside in the rain? Is this a teaching lesson? Like ….
Rain is fun! or You have to learn to get out of the rain or Learn to follow me! or is she thinking about taking him
up a tree? I could go on and on but….I’ve watched all of the pandas I could for years. But can someone help
me to understand what I am seeing???? I’m not going to spend a lot of time proof reading this. I am very slow about
this computer thing. If I spend lots of time on this it will take 3 days unil I push the send button. Soo… Help!!
    Thank you, Linda

  212. Karen V. Rome NY says:

Saw “Chubby Cubbie” (aka Yun Zi) outside today and he was all muddy. Yes ! For sure, he is all boy.

  213. Claudia says:

Interesting note: Saturday am, I glanced at the Polar Bears and one was under the rock shelter. They love the water and love to swim, hate the rain? And the Pandas didn’t seem to notice the rain this short time of watching, and are not even under their shelter, and they don’t have a swim area. Maybe the pull of bamboo is stronger than the want to be warm and dry….wow…I was puzzled that the Polars who are wet alot, were under the shelter, and the pandas were not.

Your lullabye made my eyes tear up…….thank you……

    Re: “Talk to the Paw”

Not too long ago there was a blog post on the ZA site talking about Xi Lan having to “hide” his favorite biscuits to keep Lun from snatching them away to eat herself. The keeper explained that while it seemed not-so-loving maternal behavior, that it was very important that the mama get as much food as she can in order to produce the increasingly largeamount of milk needed by the “baby” (who just gets bigger….and bigger….and…..!!) So (and I think I’m quoting someone here): All food is Bai’s food!

  216. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

It’s almost 2 pm here and the camera was scanning the classroom and could only find a little white blob under the bushes…..
I sure can’t figure out what it is …is it the cub? What part is showing? I can not make out which end is which…..
    Very strange and very still…
Great camera work on the other animals…..don’t know why its always so good on the weekends……apes, etc.

    hi all.,..
it is 5:30 EST and saw yuni betweeen a rock and a hard place. yikes! he was lying on his back next to a wall and couldn’t seem to roll over to stand. not to worry, around the corner came m. bai to the rescue.
    whew!

  219. Reenie in Atlanta says:

Jan in Australia…..I googled Adelaide Zoo today. Found links to videos about your new pandas! Their website has a blogsite also. I really loved seeing videos of WangWang and Funi! I wish I could be there to see them!

  220. Bobbie Wood says:

To Lee #183: Many years of very old CD relaxation music. I’ve not downloaded any music from Google etc. The instrument being played is a harp….perhaps there is harp music somewhere on one of the music sites?? Tragically, many of us remember how LC Nessie got a huge reprimand for using more current music that caused a copyright infringement hassle by a couple musical groups even though she was not using the music for commercial gain. Too bad because some of the music was perfect for her videos of Mei Lan and Lun Lun and Yang Yang.
To All: Gosh there was fun in the classroom today! I really had expected that Yun Zi would not ‘debut’ until after New Years Day because he seemed so content in the den. Watching yesterday and today has made me re-think the timing :) Yun Zi was very independent today, I thought :) He even got muddy :)

  221. DoxieMom says:

2 New videos posted of Saturday morning’s activity in Panda Canyon!

Bai Yun seemed pretty insistant that Yun Zi be out and about this morning! Yun Zi seems to have fun playing and exploring the Classroom Exhibit! (1 1/2 hours after the end of Part 2, the camera finds Yun Zi sound asleep under some bushes in the Classroom Exhibit!)

  222. Jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia says:

    Good morning GPF

I am glad you read the whole sentence Susan, UK – no we don’t dress up our pandas just the plush toys

COUNTDOWN -it is now 46.5 hours until I see Wang Wang and Funi – but who is counting!!
Their enclosure will be opened and they will be officially welcomed to Adelaide in 1.5 hours.

I have to tell you all – I heard our CEO, Dr Chris West on radio this morning talking about the panda personalities – so here goes.

Funi has bonded extremely well with her senior keeper, Simone and if she sees Simone she actually calls
(bleats) to her.She is seen as a bit of a princess!

Wang Wang is your typical boy, relaxed, marks his territory constantly, eats loads of boo and sleeps

Check out he adelaidenow.com website – on the right hand side of the page ( and top of the page – I just noticed) you will see a picture of the pandas – click on it and it opens the Panda page – should have something about the opening and this website will also tell you a little about my home city of Adelaide

Cheers to you all and pass on loads of Panda love to Lynn please Dennis

  223. Frances in NYC says:

Susan #181–you can buy Panda Tales from shopzoo here at the SDZ site (I just bought one and a few other things for my birthday this Sunday).

No, Jenny Lee #185–although I have tons of postcards I’ve taken, I haven’t been posting them. But I have been encouraging other people who took pictures of visits to the zoo or caught pictures of things that the rest of us have missed to post them.

Very funny, Debi #189! Yun Zi, Jungle Panda!!!

    So sweet, Pamela G #191.

Moderator’s note: Here’s our Shopzoo.com link to Panda Tales.

  224. Claudia says:

I have a craving for some sticks of celery!

  225. Frances in NYC says:

I see our beautiful Miss Zhen Zhen still likes the rain. Is she the only one of the SDZ pandas who doesn’t seem to mind sleeping and eating outside in the rain?

  226. Judi Anthony says:

On Thursday during the exam, the little guy was just getting his “sea legs” and today he’s OUTSIDE running around like he owns the place. He’s growing up too fast!

  227. Pandafan#2 says:

Looooooove that Yun Zi! I wish that I could go see him, but my mom would say no. :( Is Su Lin leaving soon? When will Zhennie leave? I’ll be so sad! :( :( :(

Moderator’s note: We don’t have a date for Su Lin’s move to China.

  228. Peggy says:

Thanks Doxiemom. The video is awesome. Look at those teeth. He is gumming the bamboo. I’m sure he doesn’t know what it is exactly but he knows that mom eats it so he has to check it out.

It does seem like they do spend more time with the boys and they grow bigger faster but maybe it is just that hormones thing. Gao Gao isn’t all that big though but then maybe he didn’t get all the nurturing. If so it doesn’t show because he seems to be a sweet boy and happy.

  229. Pam T. says:

Hi all Pam G I was very moved by your poems with the pictures on Flickr it would be wonderful if somehow they could be published and sold to help with the conservation of the pandas. I’m sure every panda person would own one. Even through it may be hard for you now to write now, I hope you know how much you have added to the the wonderful world of Pandas. Bless You

Yunior is really becoming a very active little boy it won’t be long before he’ll be out in the public eye. I was just watching Lin Ping a little while this evening she is really on the go.

  230. Mary in SF says:

KPanda #193: I’m sure you’re right that some guessed Yun Zi’s gender from Bai’s extra attentions, but I suspect there was other, um, more direct evidence as well, lol :-)

  231. Britney says:

Yun Zi is so funny, he wants his mom to play with him, when she wants to eat. It is funny when she shoves him away. And today he kept running back to the den, and she kept dragging him back to the classroom. He fell asleep, under the bush!! Here is a story about Yun Zi and Bai Yun.

    Yun Zi
    Bai Yun

Yun Zi: Ahh I am sleepy, (yawn yawn), zzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ
Bai Yun: Oh no it is not time to sleep, lets be out in the classroom! (Dragging him away to the classroom)
Yun Zi: But momma I told you I am sleepy, (walking to den again)
Bai Yun: (crunch crunch) ahh isn’t nice to be outside?!
Yun Zi: I am going back to sleep,
Bai Yun: come back! You need to be outside!
Yun Zi: (yawn yawn), zzzzzZZ ahh why are you waking me up again?
Bai Yun: (drag drag across bedroom)
Yun Zi: fine I will expore, (walk walk) Ahh here is a nice spot, I might hide from mom here under this bush (yawn) hope momma will leave me alone now zzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Bai Yun: Oh here he is (drag drag) I will drag you across the dirt, and when we get back to the den I will clean you.

MaryJane, #161, if I am understanding your question, you are asking WHAT a “DoxieMom” is, is that correct? Actually, DoxieMom is not a what, but a who! DoxieMom is the name she uses when blogging. When she is watching the panda cam and she sees Bai Yun and Yun Zi being particularily adorable, she uses special equipment on her computer to video tape what’s happening on Panda cam and then she posts the videos online for the rest of us to see! Many of us really appreciate that she takes the time to do this because then we don’t miss out on those precious moments! I’m sure she can explain it better but that’s the general idea.
Pamela G., thank you so much for sharing your poems with us, they are beautiful and touching.

  233. Janan Huntsberry says:

Strange that there are no comments since 10:12 this morning. I guess everyone is busy Xmas shopping or just decorating. I was too, so watched the timed video, but cannot tell is Yun Zi was out from his den today. Is he in the garden area with Mom or just watching?

Moderator’s note: It’s the moderator that has been busy this weekend ;-)

  234. maryellen in Fl says:

Good moning all. What a good day yesterday for all of us Panda Fans. To top it off we heard from Pamala G. As I am new to this site I’m glad to have seen some of our other bears. Wonderful to have found you all when the chub cub was a tiny babe.

Moderator, I am having a hard time reading the writing at the bottom of the screen pointing us to the the numbers directing us to the bear on screen at the time. I just got new glasses but I still can’t read them. Is there anyway the information could be bigger or clearer? Thank you all for sharing your education with us.

  235. Brandy NY says:

Good morning all and what a Burrrrr morning it is @ 14 degrees. I think I will stay inside and watch the cam. I read the wonderful poem Bai Yun’s Lullabye. Moderator I ask you this please. Toward the end of this poem it says White Cloud. Is there any connection to Yun Zi’s name and this poem? Wishing you all a great day.

Moderator’s note: Bai Yun’s name means “white cloud”.

  236. DoxieMom says:

A 3rd video posted from Saturday’s activity in the Classroom Exhibit!

1 1/2 hours after the end of “Explorer: Part 2″, the camera finds Yun Zi sound asleep under some bushes in the Classroom Exhibit! Bai wakes him, and he contents himself playing with a piece of culm, under the watchful eye of his mommie.

  237. Dianna says:

Yunior was teaching (amusing?) himself with a tree branch this morning. He was testing out his climbing abilities. Really cute.. Standing up, actually trying to crawl onto the branch, falling over (oh, there’s my back feet, how interesting they are!)…. Mom is very good at the side-paw swipe while she’s eating.. but it doesn’t deter him… he started to attack her back leg instead…

I always think of him as a “Weeble” too…

  238. catherine V says:

Just had a treat of a life time — Yun Zi in the classroom !!!!!!! No wonder the handlers call it the “classroom”. Look mom what I can do !!!

  239. Cindy says:

Today is 12/13 and at 10:30 a.m. (EST) I saw Yun Zi out in the yard with his mother. Is this the first time he’s been outside? He was trying to climb up on Mom (unsuccessfully) while she was eating; she left to sit elsewhere so he found a small log to try to climb. Too cute!

  240. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

Thank You Camera operators for showing all the Pandas today….. It was great seeing the Girls and Gao Gao if only for a few minutes……
    :-) ;-) :-)

I see that Bai Yun has taken temporary relief by climbing up into the climbing structure outside as Yunior followed her outside and was playing with the boo while Bai Yun was eating….LOL…..Enjoy your rest Bai Yun because it won’t be long before Yunior decides to climb up and visit you…..LOL …..Or maybe you are trying to teach Yunior that he has to learn to climb…..LOL…..
    ;-) :-) ;-)

To the SDZ Staff and my expanding Pandaholic GPF Family and Friends,Lynn is having a very rough time today as the blood clot broke up and they had to install more stent filters……I’ve never heard her be this down in over 25 years and she is in immense pain today…..Hopefully I will be able to pass on your Get Well Wishes and Prayers as well as Yunior updates later today if she finally feels a little better and able to talk on the telephone as you all have been helping maintain her spirits and get her mind off of the pain and this eleven month bout of Hospitalization and Medical Procedures…..We’re still hoping for enough improvenent to allow her the Holidays at home as all I want for Christmas is her by my side or at least closer to home….

“Panda Peace on Earth, Goodwill to All Life on Earth” ;-) :-) ;-)

  241. dd says:

Sukochi Lee, #102–Panda feet have fur on the bottom, which makes tile, polished wood, etc. extra difficult for a cubby just learning to walk! I’ve watched them struggle so hard stand up and take a step, only to have their little legs slide off in 4 different directions–all of a sudden cubby is on his/her belly again! They are so persistent that they will keep trying until they fall asleep. They seem to master the different surfaces with time.

  242. Mary G of MA says:

Good question, Linda (#211) – I was wondering the same. Why the exposure to rain? Or is this no big deal to Pandas – actually, this must happen often in the wild. Mother knows best, I’d guess.

Aren’t we all protective, hovering mothers of Yun Zi!! Love the way his own, unique personality is emerging. Looks like he definitely has a mind of his own. Bai is going to have her paws full…

  243. Page says:

I’ve lost the page where all the developmental statistics are posted. Can someone post how to find that page? I love the graph hee. Thank you!

Moderator’s note: It doesn’t appear to be available right now. I’ll check with our Web Team, but I’m sure it has just been temporarily replaced with the Web site survey link
    .

  244. Susan (UK) says:

#223 Frances, thank you for letting me know about Panda Tales. I obviously missed that in my travels.

Yun Zi is having a very busy weekend! I managed to catch a large chunk of his adventures on Saturday and caught up via DoxieMom’s videos.

Pamela G, love Bai Yun’s Lullabye.

  245. Becky of San Diego says:

Pamela G …. just read your poem today … you really did capture the way I feel when I watch Bai and her baby in the den and … moving outside. Thanks for sharing.
Also, someone mentioned seeing a muddy panda. I was watching yesterday, but can’t remember the time and I saw a fairly clean little panda cub exploring the classroom area. He found a spot that he liked and as I watched he rolled in the mud … and got on his feet … and he was soooo muddy I could hardly recognize him. What a mess! He seemed to be having a lot of fun. I did not watch long enough to find out when or how he got cleaned up!!

  246. Britney says:

Thank you Doxiemom, I enjoy your videos. I was watching Yun Zi:A Cautious Cub, when Bai Yun was standing up at the door, Yun Zi came running wow, it is so funny when he went under her and pushed her over, Go Yun Zi! I think he is getting faster. Here is a story about Yun Zi and Bai Yun.

    Bai Yun
    Yun Zi

    Bai Yun: Treat time!
Yun Zi: ohh i want a treat momma!!! let me through!
Bai Yun: fine you try getting one.
Yun Zi: momma i am not that tall, ok you do it, wait come back momma

  247. Dianna says:

Doxiemom – just watched the 2 videos.. YunZi’s adventures outside… I loved the Mom/Yunior interaction when YunZi was trying to climb the branch… his first tumble and she appears to comfort him :-)

Jan from Adelaide… I’m so envious of you… you have Pandas!! I’m looking forward to reading your blog after your visit with them…

  248. Helen Rainier says:

Oh my, Bai and Yun are having a ball in the Classroom today. Just now she had him pinned underneath her. He was squiriming and trying to get free so she finally let him up! I can just hear her: Son, I brought you into this world and I can take you out because I’m still bigger than you and I AM YOUR MOTHER!” Simply too cute! He seems so proud when he finally “wrestles” himself free. Boy, does she have HIM fooled!

  249. kathy, canada says:

Oh, oh..Bai and Yun Zi playing and rolling in the dirt together!! How wonderful to see them play together outside…happy days ahead! Moderator, now that Bai Yun has taken Yun Zi outdoors very early in the morning two days in a row and is insistant he stays out there – is that a signal to you that she is ready to end the denning phase? Yun Zi is certainly walking well now and seems to enjoy being outside despite his reluctance to climb out of bed in the morning!

Moderator’s note: That’s the Panda Team’s call, of course, but it does seem like he is making progress toward his public debut.

  250. Linda says:

OMG!!! So amazing to watch Bai and Yunior roughousing on the ground in the classroom area right now! They are having so much fun together. Bai is really enjoying her little Yun Zi – I have never seen anything so wonderful!!

  251. Jerry says:

I just watched Bai Yun and Yun Zi playing with each other in the classroom exhibit and am thrilled that I saw them. Bai Yun is such a good Mom and Yun Zi is so ready “To Rumble and Tumble”.

  252. Margaret says:

Yeah! Panda Kindergarten is in full swing. This afternoon at noon it was climbing 101 and walk all over mom.
Bai has Yun Zi out by the climbing structure and is picking him up and letting him climb on top of her. It appears she is getting him use to being out by the climbing structure and off the ground. I can see her working toward getting him to climb. How exciting. It will be hard to miss all the action this week. I think Den days are drawing or have drawn to a close. I can tell that much of my holiday break will be spent watching the panda cam and you tube videos. Glad Doxiemom is on top of it and taking such great clips of the action.

  253. MarilynP says:

WOW, what a play session is going on right now!! I wish all of you PANDA FANS were watching!! None stop FUN!! Where are they at this moment? It looks like they are outside on a grass area?? This is terrific!!!

  254. Dianna says:

Moderator: Bai Yun is on the inside in her bedroom with the door closed to the outside… YunZi is on the outside… I saw keeper feet walk around outside… just curious… what’s going on? Did Bai react being shut up inside with YunZi on the outside and she couldn’t get to him? It appeared before the door was shut all the way, he was trying to crawl inside and she nudged open the door a bit more with her shoulder… then he turned aournd, went back out and the doore was shut all the way….

Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to our Panda Team.

  255. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#221- Doxiemom – priiceless – any bets on when Yun Zi makes it up onto that tree branch he was fascinated with :) :) I loved the way Bai just seemed to sit there watching him as he played :)

  256. jeanneb says:

Has anyone seen Bai nursing the last couple of days?

Does he feed out in the exhibit or does she take him back to the den.
    I’m sure he’s eaten, but I didn’t see it….so I worry!

  257. Jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia says:

    Good Morning GPF

Wang Wang and Funi COUNTDOWN -24 hours!!!! Yippeeeeee…….

  258. Kay Davies says:

Oh, I couldn’t believe it was Yun Zi in the classroom, but the tentative movements and the lowered hindquarters all said “cub” — and it’s him!! First time I’ve seen him interact with anything but Bai Yun and bits of bamboo. He is a real explorer, isn’t he? Just love him. Now I’m going to watch Doxie’s video, but am keeping the Panda Cam open in a separate window.

  259. Pandafan#2 says:

Moderator: Is there an estimate for when Su Lin might leave? (a month? A year?) I will be VERY sad! :(

Yun Zi in the classroom exhibit? Or is that Bai Yun? I am not sure how full the zoom on the cam is.

Can the cams focus on Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao more? I haven’t seen them in sooooooooo long!

Moderator’s note: We don’t have a date for Su Lin’s departure.

  260. Kay Davies says:

Thank you, thank you, Doxie!! In your video, Bai is checking on Yun Zi every few minutes, which is what I would have expected on today’s Panda Cam, but there he is now, still by himself, rolling on his back like his daddy. Where is Bai? On exhibit? Asleep? Or lying nearby, out of camera range, with one eye open so she can watch her boy? I’m so excited. Although I loved watching Chubby Cubby grow into Yun Zi, the next months will be so exciting, watching him doing things, having fun, and learning several somethings new every day. This is when Panda Cam is the best, with a new cub learning independence one step at a time.

  261. Lisa in Colorado says:

Dennis please tell Lynn we hope her pain goes away quickly and she feels better soon. Maybe she can visualize petting our little fur-ball Yun Zi. Is’nt petting animals supposed to be calming? Anyway, prayers and thoughts go her (& your) way.

  262. DoxieMom says:

    New Sunday video just posted!

This is possibly the most precious play session between Bai and Yun Zi that I have ever seen!! It happened around noon on Sunday after Bai woke Yun Zi up from his nap!!

The link for “On Sunday, Bai and Yun Zi Play!” is:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIgNGCh3nvY

Thanks JC #232, for your excellent explaination of “who” I am and “what” I do!!

  263. Debi says:

How adorable! Yun Zi has now had two days with a lot of time out in the classroom and he seems to be loving it! We watched him and Bai having a fun game of “Bear Wrestling” and later found him under a bush sound alseep. It looks like the exact same place he slept in yesterday! He is growing up so much and has discovered the joy of fresh air and a huge world to discover!

  264. Daisy says:

I loved the video of the cub’s 15th exam, and have watched it half a dozen times.

Something I thought pretty interesting was that, early in the video, when he apparently smelled something on the carpet, he opened his mouth like cats do when they encounter interesting smells. Is this a common Panda behavior?

Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to our Panda Team.

  265. Peggy says:

thanks to Doxiemom we are able to see much more of mom and baby. I can’t always check in and I miss a lot so the videos are really fantastic. Mom is trying to train her baby I’d say. He walks pretty good but he needs to keep working on it and he has to come out into the open more. Sleeping time will always be there for him but I’m sure that at this age he’d just rather sleep esp. when mom has fed him.

  266. Vie-Omaha, NE says:

yun zi is sure getting adventursum, so interesting to watch now, i hope the camera will keep up with him, there are times it don’t. he will be very fun to watch now, his mom will be very busy!!

  267. Pam T. says:

It’s amazing how much Little Yunior has advance in the passed week he is on the move and there’s no stopping him now :)

  268. maryellen in Fl says:

Hi Dennis, I’m sorry to hear that Lynn has had such a bad day, she remains in my prayers and many other GPF as well. I hope she rests well tonight and you will have good news for us tomorrow. Are you taking care of you, Dennis? You know it’s important for you to get rest and find something to keep your spirits up. I’m glad you have chub and all of us to lean on a little.

What a great bear day this has been, Thanks to Doxie and PamG and all. We are so fortunate to have such caring keepers and Vets. Just think, in July I didn’t even know a site like this existed and now I’m hooked!

  269. Chari Mercier says:

Hi! Between 6:30 & 7pm EST, I was watching Bai and Yuni in what I think was the sun room. Mo was eating her dinner, Yuni was walking around, sniffing, looking, and playing with the boo stalks. A nice little picnic for them!
    Chari Mercier :)
    St. Pete, FL

  270. Char says:

Please, please fix the camera in the sun room!! Thanks so much.

  271. Frances in NYC says:

Mary G #242–pandas are well-equipped to deal with rain and wet and snow. Their fur has an oily coat, the fur is very long, and they have a handy fat layer to protect them from the cold. I think some pandas don’t like the rain and/or snow and some do, just like people.

It has been so wonderful to see mom and baby today in the classroom and now in the sunroom, playing and nursing and wrestling together. They’re a little fuzzy now, but it has been a great birthday treat for me today to see little dude really stepping into his next stage of life full force.

Someone asked earlier how Bai Yun treated a boy cub differently from a girl–having really only watched Zhen Zhen and Yun Zi, I see her lying down more to nurse Yun Zi, whereas she always seemed to sit up and have Miss ZZ standing also after she passed the stage in which she was held in Bai’s arms to nurse. I think the play sessions will prove to be longer too, with more “retaliation” from Yun Zi.

I’m just loving watching this evening–but please focus cam # 17! Thanks–

  272. Shirley says:

Thanks Doxie Mom, again. It seems like our little cubbie has grown up a bunch just over the weekend. I think Mama Bai decided that he can’t laze away his life in the den. Too much to learn.

Question- When Bai headed over to the door of the classroom, there was a person in there. I assume that there’s a fence or something for protection, but Bai sat up and looked pretty interested in the person. Does she enjoy interaction with the keepers, or is she looking for a treat? Maybe she wanted the person to acknowledge that Cubbie was out and about. So cute.

Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to our Panda Team.

  273. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Must be raining in San Diego? I was watching a little black and white blur trying to bounce, eat, bug a big black and white blur. Too funny. I was making up stories in my head about what they were actually doing.

Moderator, do you know if the music from ZZ’s “Panda Tales” was written for the video? Some of the songs sound like they were taken from Pamela G. beautiful poems. Just curious. And here’s hoping there’s a “Panda Tales 2″ with the little blur being the co-star with the star being the big blur. And by the way, thank you for all you do. There’s JUST one of you?

Lynn and Dennis………I’m so sorry for all the current difficulties you’re experiencing. Please know you have the Panda Family’s best wishes, prayers, and good thoughts. I wish I had some words of wisdom, but all I can offer are heart-felt prayers and good thoughts.

Moderator’s note: If I’m remembering correctly, music was composed for the video. The video was produced by our local PBS station, KPBS.

  274. Gabrielle says:

Hey, thanks for the time with Gao Gao. It is always a treat to see Mr. Gao Gao. I am fond of him. He is part macho man and part coach potato. Oh, I am enjoying Bai Yun’s and Yun Zi’s day of fun. It looked like he had so much fun wrestling a plant. What a cutie!

  275. Judy from California says:

He is getting so big!! – it is so cute the way he “motors” around on the floor and the keepers are talking baby talk to him, just like we all would!! Pamela 191 – I love your poem and DoxieMom, thanks for more videos!!! from your fellow pandaholic, Judy

  276. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

I noticed in one video that there is a moat of concrete blocks. I think its in the classroom.
Isn’t anyone afraid that the cub will be curious and perhaps fall off it?

Watching his actions where he couldn’t get up off his back and had to call for help…..I can see why Momma hasn’t been too anxious to take him out much. She sure knows what he is capable of at this age.

  277. TAMI MICHAUD says:

    YUN ZI:MOMMIE WE WENT SPLORING!!!
    BAI YUN:YOU’RE A GREAT EXPLORER…YOU’RE DOING GREAT.

BAI YUN:YOU CERTAINLY ARE… WERE GETTING CLOSER FOR THE HUMANS TO SEE US…
    YUN ZI.OOOOOOOH I CAN HARDLY WAIT…
BAI YUN: DID YOU FINISH YOUR LETTER TO SANTA PAWS??
YUN ZI: NOPE I WAS TO BUSY SPLORING..
BAI YUN: WE NEED TO FIND SOME TIME TO FINISH IT AND SEND IT OFF SOON.
YUN ZI:OH TA MOMMIE….I NOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH I WUV YOU…I WUV YOU.XXXXOOOXXX

  278. Linda A. / NorCal says:

I just watched on LinPing TV an exam……well, it was like trying to catch a squirming a baby, so it was kinda of exam. The vets do it in the crib, and SHE DOES NOT WANT TO BE IN THERE. But at one point, while laying on her back, she started playing with her foot; and the black tip was in full view. So cute. Anyone who loves pandas should check out LinPing TV. While it’s odd watching the keepers routines, she is so loved by them. BTW, there’s sound on it too. Not that I understand what they are saying.

Baby Boy, glad to see you sleeping in the den, all nice and toasty. Do the girls sleep outside when it’s raining? Or do they prefer their bedrooms?

Moderator’s note: Your question will be forwarded to our Panda Team.

  279. Reenie in Atlanta says:

I regret to inform all GPFs that we no longer have a baby panda. We now have a young male who can motor himself all the way to the Classroom Exhibit……who is now teaching himself how to climb! A bittersweet excitement…..I shall truly miss the baby days. Go YunZi!

  280. susan says:

Dennis and Lynn #240- You are in my thoughts today and I am praying that Lynn will be over her immense pain. Hope she feels better soon. And yes, we want her back so she gets to see Yun Zi at his best and of course this amazing blog /friends.

  281. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#211 – linda & all others new to the world of giant pandas :) Yes, to a giant panda in the wild, rain is normal as is snow & cold. Their natural home is in the cold, snowy mountains. We tend to forget our giant pandas are wild animals that live in harsh conditions :) A little rain at the SDZ is not going to hurt our Yun Zi. That said – I wish I could recall those pandas that can’t stand the rain – is it pappa Yang (ZA) A panda mom like Bai may be born in captivity but somehow their natural instincts kick in & they seem to raise their cubs as if they are in the wild, yes, baby cubs try to climb trees fall & GO SPLAT, get back up & try again, mom sees cub climbing tree, pulls cub down (another SPLAT) – You will see this over & over & over :) Seems like Momma Bai now feels like Yun Zi is ready to be outside & maybe on exhibit (that I’m sure the SDZ hoped) :)

  282. pandafan-north says:

#236 DoxieMom – your video from today “On Sunday, Bai and Yun Zi Play!” is one of the most endearing shows of tender affection between mother and cub. You could see both of them just thoroughly enjoying each other – I loved how Bai went on her back and stretched her arms out as if to say, “Come, play with me, little one!” Panda lovers, do not miss this video – you will be riveted to your seat for the whole nine minutes. Thank you, DoxieMom, for capturing these memorable scenes! We’d be missing out on a lot of them if you weren’t so kind enough to record them for us. We, GPF’s owe you our gratitude.

  283. Dawn from MA says:

Yun Zi is getting cuter & cuter each time. Thanks for all the videos SDZ & DoxieMom. I thoroughly enjoy them. I just got myself an early Christmas gift and adopted Yun Zi. I am in love with that little boy. Also his Mom is a wonder too. She is a sweet soul. Cannot wait to frame the picture of the little guy. When I am having a stressful day, these two take away the stress be it only for a little bit. I am grateful.

Have a wonderful Holiday season all the Panda Bloggers & the staff at the SDZ.
    Blessings

Moderator’s note: Thank you for adopting our little guy!

  284. Danielle, NY says:

Thank you DoxieMom for the videos you posted today on YouTube, especially for “On Sunday, Bai and Yun Zi Play!” it is truly adorable the way they play together, heart warming to say the least… The way the panda mothers are playing with their cubs, making it look like an even match, like the cubs have a fighting chance has always been a source of admiration for me… They are truly amazing, and a source of inspiration…

  285. Jenny Lee says:

Pebble-shaped eyes. semicircular ears, with a heart-like nose, and a waved mouth, who is that baby there. Oh, that’s the boy called Yun Zi, one of the most beautiful, energetic and cute panda bears. Always love you, yunior.

  286. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

Jan cecchi, Adelaide, South Australia….Thank-You for your kind wishes for Lynn….Let us know if anything is posted on the It was a Black (and White) Tie dinner that they had at the zoo for 140 VIP guests had the privilege of being the first paying dinner guests of Adelaide’s latest celebrities, Giant Pandas Wang Wang and Funi,as per Panda News – Panda News from around the world as I got an e-mail from them with minor details….Who was invited? It would have been a nice gesture to invite some of the GPF’s near by to attend…. :-) ;-) :-)

They finally put Lynn into a suspended twilight sleep today because of the pain and blood clots breaking up and moving….I will have a lot of wishes and Yunior Stories and Videos to fill her in on when I am able to talk to her again..Still hoping I get my Christmas Wish of getting her home or at least closer to home before the Holidays…..I will keep my expanding GPF Family and Friends notified if anything happens either good or bad with her as it has not been looking good the past several days and I have a 3 1/2 hour drive if she deteriorates any further,as a family friend that is a RN that is with her will let me know if I should go up to see her as she is not allowed visitors at the moment……

Its 2:08 am (why am I up?) Mom and baby are having the sweetest game of footsies. Baby is biting his newly discovered toes and Mom is doing the same(what Mother can resist her baby’s toes!). I love that they are in the cozy den, spending some snuggle time because as Pamela G so beautifully put it, Den time will soon be a sweet memory.

  288. Page says:

DoxieMom is an international treasure! Thank you so much!!!

I managed to find the Lin Ping TV yesterday. Great video quality and sound. I caught an adorable moment between mom and baby, but anytime I have watched, they are in their cage. Den? I see some toys outside of it, but do they have a natural area with trees to climb and all, as do “our” pandas?

I loved seeing Zhen Zhen and Su Lin (both, I think) yesterday. And I saw some video of the crowds in Australia getting their first view of the pandas. Is there any other animal that can make so many people happy just by sitting around and eating some veggies?

There have been a couple of articles recently about the panda genome project. The one I saw this morning suggests that panda taste receptors may not “read” meat, and that that is why they are so predominantly vegetarian. Hmmm. Theories! It will be interesting to see what else they are learning, though. It appears to lay to rest any doubts that pandas are truly bears… and also closely related to dogs. Or, perhaps, that dogs are related to them. Which came first?

  289. catherine V says:

Yun Li is very tired this morning from all that “learning” yesterday. :)

  290. Bobbie Wood says:

Doximom: The videos over the weekend were spectacular! I am so pleased you put them up because I missed all of the action while playing with my Grandchildren. The attempts at climbing, the tender moments with Bai and Yun Zi, the twirling of Yun Zi as Bai lay on her back were such fun to watch :)

  291. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

thank you so much MODERATOR for your answer to my BAMBOO EATING QUESTION. i have an encyclopedia, dictionary & obviously a computer at my fingertips but asking my question online is much more FUN and i think we all feel like we have our own PERSONAL PANDA PEOPLE (P.P.P.) thanks again so much.

  292. Shirley says:

    Panda fans-

I know that we’re supposed to keep the blog on subject, but we have among us a couple who are suffering and reaching out for friendship. As you know, Dennis and Lynn, separated by 3 1/2 hours, have been taking some comfort from the baby panda’s adventures. Little Yun Zi has no idea what a blessing he is to so many people.

Our hearts go out to everyone needing the little cubbie as a pleasant diversion from care.

  293. Carol L. says:

#286 Prayers and thoughts for Lynn. I hope your get your Christmas wish.

  294. jeanneb says:

Do they both abandon the den completely?

    Say it ain’t so!

Sigh. It’s like finally taking down the baby bed.

  295. Carole in San Diego says:

DoxieMom #262 What an adorable play session you captured. Moderator, it is time to open the exhibit for Yun Zi’s adoring fans.

  296. Pamela G says:

The day Zhen Zhen was born…

    August 3, 2007

Folks ‘round the whole world waited. E-mails sped around the earth.
“The pandacam’s gone off the air! We think Bai’s giving birth!”
And while we speculated, our Bai Yun, Queen Panda Mom,
Calmly held Cub Number Four cradled in her palm.
Now there’s milk and warmth and love and quiet in the den.
A tiny Panda life’s begun and Hope is born again.

The Hope that we can somehow keep these precious bears alive.
That Man will somehow come to see that our world can not thrive
Unless we give all life on earth the room and things they need,
That our earth is a space ship and it carries precious seeds.
That we are also passengers, not captains, and not kings.
That we are not the masters of all these living things.

So watch, but do so humbly. To see Bai and her child
Speaks to each human on this world of what we owe the wild:
To keep it safe. To leave it be. If we destroy their home
Please, everyone, can you not see that we destroy our own?
Rejoice with laughter and with tears. The cycle starts anew.
And pray we have the wisdom to protect these precious few.

And now, a word to Gao Gao: Studmuffin, there’s no doubt
That when it comes to making bears, you know what you’re about!
So thank you, little Big Big bear, for our third cub from you
And now there is just one more thing I hope you let me do.
If our precious newborn babe is girl cub number three
I hope that you don’t mind if I nickname her our Sweetpea.
But if our big fat lively cub is boy cub number two
I’d really like to call him our Cubmuffin, after you!

Of course, the cub turned out to be our adorable Zheni.

  297. Georgie from PA says:

    Dear DoxiMom……
Loved your pix on Sunday /w Bai and Yun Zi. ……………Great photos of Mom and Baby interacting!
They were almost like we humans…incredible.
It is amazing how Yun ZI is rapidly maturing at 4 1/2 Months of age. Too old …too fast!

Here in the East a DoxieMom is usually the proud owner of Dachshunds….whatever.

We are so fortunate to have your professional videos of the Pandas,
they feed our insatiable appetites of all things relating to those beautiful animals….specially Bai and Yun Zi.
I for one am ever grateful to see your film work !!!

Dennis and Lynn, You are in our prayers…we pray that you can be together soon .

Frances in NYC..Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Pandas…it’s most interesting.

Blessings this Holiday Season to All…Let There Be Peace on Earth !

Xi Lan is definitively a big boy now!! According to the AZ website, Xi Lan passed a milestone today, this morning he tipped the scales at 30 kg (66.14 lbs). And according to my calculations, he is 471 days old today…
Yun Zi is not the only who doesn’t mind getting muddy, it has been raining a lot in Atlanta last week, and mom Lun Lun and the kids Mei Lan and Xi Lan are enjoying the mud, fresh air and food outside while Yang Yang, who doesn’t like being wet, is staying dry and warm indoor…

  299. Julie says:

I’m so happy to see I’m not the only pandaholic who’s addicted to Yun Zi and panda cam. I love watching this little guy, especially when he’s with this mama in the den, they’re so cute when they cuddle. I’ve become such a big fan, I created group just for Yun Zi lovers on facebook, its called I Love Yun Zi. I would love to connect with other yun zi fans. Happy Holidays!

  300. Lee in Vancouver says:

175 – Linda A – Glad you like the pics. I would/should have taken more but I forget to take pictures when I’m around pandas. My daughter takes most of them and then just leaves me while she checks out other things. Eventually she comes back and drags me away. At CMZ is saw them in the morning and then in the afternoon. Each time one was awake and the other asleep in different yards.

I just found out that the guy who runs that Thai site is a transplanted Canadian. We do get around don’t we.

221 – Doximom – Love The Explorer Part 1. Bai is so attentative while Yunior tries to climb that little branch. She stayed the whole time and didn’t eat once.

Moderator – To get Bai Yun comfortable with people around her little guy do the staff congregate at the Classroom to get her use to having people around again?

Moderator’s note: In the past, that’s what has been done. That will probably be the case again this time.

  301. Laurie in Baltimore says:

Awww–look at the Big Boy sitting up and “eating” his boo like Mommy!!! :-) 12:10 PM EST !!!

  302. Dianna says:

Doxiemom: Loved the video of Bai and YunZi playing outside. That has to be the best video yet… Thank you for posting it.

Dennis: I wish Lynn could see the latest video… you can’t help but smile when you watch the 2 playing together. Hopefully she’ll start feeling better soon.

I always enjoy seeing Bai in “color”. She truly is a beautiful bear.

  303. pandafan-north says:

#281 Maureen in Stanwood – I believe our Papa Gao does not like the rain. I remember watching him on the cam on one rainy day – he was out in the area where Su Lin is right now and he was in the cave under the large tree stump. I was also talking to Kris (narrator) back in October and she confirmed that Gao does not fancy the rain too much.

Fun and adventure await us, fellow GPF’s!! The prince Yun Zi has discovered the outdoors and is thoroughly loving it. They just love exploring. I remember when Zhennie had her first foray into the classroom – she went around sniffing every corner, every branch, the ground, the doorways, bushes, etc. This is a great time for panda watching.

  304. Pat says:

DoxieMom……………..thank you so very much, for what I think is your best video yet of Bai and Yun. All your videos are awesome and are cherished memories of Mom and Son, but this video of them playing and watching Yun attempt to climb/crawl that low to the ground branch is the most precious.
I have watched this video many times now……….just can’t get enough…………Adoreable, adoreable, adoreable.

  305. DoxieMom says:

A 2nd Sunday video just posted for those that might have missed this around 8AM yesterday morning when Bai had Yun Zi out early in the Classroom!

Yun Zi gets another lesson about bothering Bai while she is eating boo! So he sets off to amuse himself trying to climb a fallen tree limb! Simply precious!!

Pamela G #296 Very sweet, touching words. Thank you so much for sharing!

  306. Panda Team says:

Yun Zi would need to be making his way around under his own steam and choosing to follow his mother out on exhibit regularly. When the time comes for him to be on exhibit, he needs to be able to take himself out there willingly. Staff does not want to have to carry him out! It’s generally our position that if he needs to be carried, then he’s not ready. We don’t want to artificially end this denning phase for him to accommodate an externally imposed time line.

    #167 Pat
No one is watching them around the clock at this time, but it would be fair to estimate that Bai Yun is probably feeding Yun Zi two to five times daily. By the end of their association at 18 months, this will drop to about 1 time per day.

    #264 Daisy
Pandas do “flehmen” when they encounter interesting scents. Like other carnivores, the panda has a vomeronasal organ in the roof of its mouth. Inhaling a scent through the mouth – which is what you are describing – allows the scent molecules to enter this organ and provides the panda with more details about the scent than can be obtained through more routine sniffing through the nostrils.

    #271 Frances in NYC
Cam 17 is very, very old and cannot be better adjusted. At certain times of the day, when the glare hits the camera, it’s pretty nonfunctional. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in our budget to replace it this year.

    #272 Shirley
Bai Yun has had a longstanding relationship with Kathy, our most senior keeper, but is also very keen on interacting with all of her keepers. The staff has always described her as a smart and sweet bear, and she knows where her bread – or biscuits – are buttered! Nonetheless, a protected contact environment is always maintained for all the bears except a cub.

    #278 Linda A./NorCal
Each panda is different. Sometimes the rain doesn’t bother them, and they rest outside. I have seen a bear sleep through the cycles of the sprinkler system, even though they were getting soaked. Sometimes, for whatever reason, they opt to sleep inside. It’s their prerogative.

  307. Ruth from Austria says:

Thank you for the wonderful video and all the updates on little/big Yun Zi, too adorable. But I agree, he is “all boy”, and what kind of a boy.
#13 Pandapaw, you must have an enormous cat at 7,7 kg. What kind of breed is she/he? I am right in guessing that it is a tom?
#60 Jan Cecchi, by now you should have visited Wang Wang und Funi and met them face to face. #DoxieMom, as always thank you for the gorgeous videos and slide shows, what would we do without you? #64 Dennis, regarding the “Trail of the Panda”, I have got a non-coded DVD-Player since my hubby and I watched some movies from Canada. Would that help? #240 I am so sorry to learn that Lynn is feeling so bad. My thoughts are with you, take also care of yourself in order to avoid a burn out. All the best to both of you!
#73 Liana/San Diego, great story. Being a proud cat owner, and therefore, familiar with their characters I can just picture your cat not wanting to let go of “her baby”.
#82 Jane Fairfield/VT My condolences for the loss of your father. I know how it feels to lose a parent, it hurts tremendously, and this shortly before Christmas. But you and your family are in my thoughts and I wish you lots of strength. #87 P. Wong, great conversation as always, thank you.
#116 Pam G., what heartwarming poems, they brought tears to my eyes. I am looking forward to more of your poems. #191 Bobbie Wood, thank you for a super video, it was so nice of you to share it with your GPF-family. #302 Dianna, I had to smile picturing Bai in “colour”. There is a cute joke re: colour which I wish to share with you, guys.

“The old panda bear feels that his end is near. In order to ease his passing into panda heaven the keeper asks him: “Is there anything that we could do for you? Do you have a last wish?” The panda bear hesitates since there is nothing he could think of. But then he smiles and answers: “Yes, I have got a wish before I go to panda heaven. I would love to see a photo of myself in colour.”

  308. Susan (UK) says:

I’ve just watched the video of Bai and Yun Zi playing outside. It’s so good I don’t think I even blinked once, I was totally transfixed. I’m sure I saw our little man attempt some pole dancing!! Bai adores him (as she has all her other cubs, of course) and it so shows in her face. Yun Zi has done a lot of growing up in the last few days.

  309. Frances in NYC says:

Georgie #297–everything I know about pandas I learned here, so thanks to all the keepers, mods, staff, and other bloggers. I also always hope for corrections if I have ever imparted wrong info.

DoxieMom–thanks, as always, for collating those wonderful moments for us.

Laurie #301–wasn’t that cute–sitting on that teensy ledge and communing with his teensy boo branch! And now he’s having a big boy sized nap!

Gosh, Moderator #300, that must be hard–to get the staff to “congregate” to watch Bai Yun and Yun Zi. Almost as hard as getting vets and people to come to exams for measuring and “palpating.” Sign me up!

  310. Frances in NYC says:

Panda Team #306–thanks for responding to my plea about Cam 17. It must have misted over at that point or something, because it seemed more than usually blurry. Still a blessing to have a cam there at all, so I shouldn’t be greedy!

  311. Bobbi (Oh) says:

Well, here it is…. my first blog !!! And I know I have found the right one ! I feel like I have found “another family” and the cutest, butterball butt boy Yun Zi is our pride & joy ! I have loved & collected pandas all of my life, and my 1st actual panda I was able to physically see was Tai Shan @ the SNZ, I was there All Day ! He was 6 months old at that time, and read that he will be taking the trip to China soon :( I have read through quite a bit of this blog, I just adore the poems from Pamela G #184!! & yes you should write a book of peoms !! You could call it Poems by Pamela ! All of the great work from Doxiemom #43, You Rock !! Well, hopefully I qualify for being a pandaholic ! And last but not least A Huge Thank You to the SDZ and all of their hard work (i’m sssoo jealous) on taking care of our wonderful, beautiful pandas !!!!! Keep on growing healthy and strong Yun Zi, can’t wait to get out to see you !!!

  312. Dee in Michigan says:

Someone earlier “reminded” us that Yun Zi had a twin (until it was unfortunately reabsorbed).
Can you imagine having TWO of these precious cubs to watch and marvel over?! I’m not sure I could handle it….Yun Zi is just WAY TOO CUTE…..but I’d sure love to try someday! Can you imagine these blogs if there were TWO cubs to watch? And TWO exams each week! We’d never get any of our work done – it’s hard enough now! However, we all know even the birth of one cub is a blessing and we are happy as can be with just one cub to follow – THANK YOU, Bai Yun & Gao Gao and SDZ!

I saw Yunior and Mom outside yesterday. Is that his first trip? He is much more playful. Love watching him, Thank you all for pics and blogs.

Moderator’s note: He went out a bit on Friday, and I believe Bai Yun had brought him out briefly before that.

  315. jeanneb says:

Doxie: I hope you were watching around 1:50pm Pacific.

If not, check it out. Yun gets “stuck” on top of that table (platform?) out in the bedroom.
He finally tumbles off, head first. The look on his face was priceless!

Then he scampered out to the sun room to tell Mommie all about it.

Now Mom is getting treats through the bedroom door.

A good day for viewing! THank you , SDZ!

Dennis Carney, NJ—I am really praying for your wife, Lynn. Been praying for the both of you ever since I started reading your comments about pandas and her health. Sorry to read your comment about the setback that Lynn just had this past week. I do hope and pray that she can recover from this and be able to go home for Christmas. Keep us updated about her condition, ok? Hopefully, you can tell her about the latest antics of Yuni and the other pandas real soon.
Jen, Adelaide, Australia—I’m glad that you were able to go to Adelaide Zoo to see Wang Wang and Funi today, Aussie time! I’m sure that you thoroughly enjoyed watching them and getting to know their personalities. Let us know how your visit with the pandas went, ok? You were probably just gushing over them, right mate? Don’t blame you at all!! I would be gushing over pandas if I was seeing them in person myself!
Still would just love to hold and squeeze furry little Yuni! He is waaaaaay toooooo CUTE!!! How many of us have said that in the last 4 months?? Oh yeah, Yuni turned 4 months old on Dec. 5th! Can’t believe he’s 4 months old already! Where did that time go to?? WOW!!!
OK—done for now! Will be back later! Oh, just saw Yuni on the cam climbing over that little wall at a doorway going into the other room! He’s getting pretty good at that now!

  318. Susie P (El Cajon, CA) says:

jeanneb #315 he got “stuck” on the table because Mama lifted him up there then LEFT THE ROOM!! I guess she pretty much knows what she’s doing by #5. He hit the floor, lay there for a moment or two and got on with business.
DoxieMom #221 Having no kids of my own, I feel such pride and excitement when I see him out and playing with Mom and trying out his first tree limb.
    I love this blog!

RE: Pandas and rain, some of my fondest panda-watching memories happened at SDZ when Su Lin and Mei Sheng were both outside, in separate yards of course, playing while it rained. It seemed as though someone wound them up like clockwork toys! Does anyone have video posted of that?

  320. Dennis & Lynn Carney (NJ) says:

    # 306 Panda Team….Thank-You for your information…You answered a question I had posted in an earlier Blog about if Pandas had the Olfactory Sensors in the roof of there mouths like other bears….Perhaps this can explain all the mouth to mouth and nose to nose interaction between Bai Yun and Yunior and why he knew it was safe to pick up bamboo and mouth it as a teething aid….After all this is how Black And Grizzly Bears teach their cubs what is safe to eat ….

I too saw the yun zi on that table and it worried me, he fell off right on his head, that had to hurt, im thinking that table should not be there!! I was sure hoping he did not get hurt. He is so sweet to watch and the viedeos are great, thanks doxie mom.

Moderator’s note: The “table” is a platform with a built-in scale. Yun Zi probably didn’t realize he was getting weighed

As the cub grows and becomes more playful, we definitely wear long sleeves and high rubber boots. As for biting or scratching, we direct the behavior to something else; that is where we use props like toys or apple slices, even honey to distract and hopefully discourage this behavior. We have had good success with this. Of course, as the cub gets too big we do cease exams for obvious safety reasons!

Bai usually leaves the bamboo in the den and her “maid service” (the keepers) clean it up.

The main reason we use the carpet is for traction for a young cub; our floor in the main area can be slippery and difficult for a cub just starting to walk. We never had a cub have an accident on the rug; in fact, a nice point to make for using the carpet is that is does have his scent on it and we hope that it helps make him more secure during his exams. And yes, our floors are very clean! We don’t keep our cub out any longer than he feels comfortable, and that timing depends on his mood; some days he wants to stay out longer, other days he wants back in his bedroom. We let him make the choice.

Yes, Bai does this with all her cubs, especially when she is eating. Rest assured that she will nurse him when he and she are ready. The pushing is also an introduction to play as well. As Yun Zi matures and plays more with Bai, you will be amazed how rough it can be. It is all part of the learning process for the boy!

Yes, this is a normal position for panda cubs.
