Panda Cub Receives Name
Posted at 11:31 am November 17, 2009 by Yadira Galindo
There was pandamonium at the San Diego Zoo as we prepared to finally reveal our 104-day-old giant panda cub’s name. For days people kept asking, “So what is his name?” Being one of a handful of people who knew the name at the close of the voting period, I simply smiled and said “You’ll have to wait until the naming ceremony.” I admit, it was a bit of a smug smile. You know the one…the one you can’t hold back when you have a secret that everyone wants to know.
So what is it? It was a close one. All five names could easily have been the one. We all know the little guy is an “extraordinary bear.” Those of us who live in San Diego would have loved to have him named after our beloved city, since it is quite blissful. As his personality finally begins to emerge, and this cub is finally showing that he, too, will be rambunctious, little dragon would have been fitting. But I think we are the ones that are “eternally blessed” for having been able to witness the birth of this rare bear, so this name wasn’t quite right for him, in my opinion.
In the end, the name that was bestowed upon this bear is one that pays tribute to an extraordinary mother, Bai Yun. Mama bear’s name means “white cloud.” And so, our little guy is from here on out to be called Yun Zi or “son of cloud.”
The Chinese name, Yun Zi, was revealed at a ceremony at the Zoo’s Hunte Amphitheater. Dr. Ron Swaisgood, co-head of the Zoo’s Giant Panda Conservation Unit, shared the history of the giant panda at the Zoo, from Bai Yun’s arrival in 1996, the birth of her five cubs here in San Diego, and an update on our newest panda.
We were pleased by the presence of the deputy consul general from the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles, Mr. Sun Weide, who spoke a few words about the partnership between the San Diego Zoo and our colleagues in China. Berit Durler, president of the Zoological Society of San Diego, thanked our guests for supporting our efforts in panda conservation.
It is because of the support that all of you have provided to us that we asked for you to be involved in naming our little guy. We received 6,331 names. Once we narrowed the names down to 5, we allowed just one vote per person or family at the same computer during the four-day voting period. We received 17,521 votes. That’s quite a commitment!
Here is the breakdown of the vote:
Yun Zi: son of cloud 28%
Xiao Long: little dragon 26%
Xiong Wei: extraordinary bear 20%
Yong Xiang: eternally blessed 14%
Fu Sheng: blissful San Diego 12%
Yadira Galindo is a senior public relations representative for the San Diego Zoo.
Note: A big day for Yun Zi, as he also had his 12th exam this morning. Son of Cloud weighed 13.2 pounds (5.98 kilograms). More images are available in our Panda Photo Gallery.
Here’s video of the exam and the naming ceremony…

Yun Zi- knew it knew it knew it… What a boy!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:38 am
What a good name for the cub.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Thank you! I have been sitting on pins and needles waiting for this!
Thank you.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:40 am
I have been on pins and needles waiting for this day. I’m so delighted the name Yun Zi, Son of Cloud, was the name he has received. It’s a wonderful tribute to this beautiful panda mother! She is obviously a great mother and look at how prolific her first daughter, Hua Mei has become at being a mother. There are tears streaming down my cheeks as I type this!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:40 am
YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited he has his own name and such an honorable one too, THANK YOU San Diego Zoo!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Well, my choice came in second. I love the name. Bai came in, woke up Yun Zi to tell him. It was sweet to watch. She dragged him out into the garden room and the sun room and then back to the den. A special trip on his special day.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:41 am
very cool!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:41 am
Thank you San Diego Zoo and Panda Fans you done good.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Yay!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:43 am
And they called him Yun Zi. I am so happy as that is the name I voted for. He is now, and forever, to be known as Son of Cloud.
I was watching the Cam and at 11:10 Bai Yun went into the den and awoke Son of Cloud. It seemed as if she wanted to make sure that her Little Cloud was awake for one of the most important milestones of his life.
Virtual hugs and kisses to the Panda family.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:43 am
I love you, Yun Zi…..I wish I am there right now to witness your naming ceremony. I will be there to see you once you are in your new home, though, I promise.
Indeed, a tribute to Bai and Gao is very much fitting. Of course, I voted for Xiong Wei because of an extraordinary boy I once knew:-).
Yun Zi…..hugs and lots of hugs…..
November 17th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Long life to Yun Zi and kudos to the lovely Bai Yun and to the Panda Team for this panda cub!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:44 am

November 17th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Thanks for the update. Yun Zi fits him perfectly
November 17th, 2009 at 11:45 am
Yun Zi!! How adorable!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Since Yun Zi was my choice I am very pleased, but would have been happy with any of the final 5 choices.
It would be nice to know how to pronouce the name properly…and I know you can help us out with this.
Bai Yun has her work cut out for her now that he has become mobile…I just saw her pull him back into the den as he was trying to go out on his own!!! What a guy!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Thank you for the info on the voting … truly, there wasn’t a bad choice for such a special little guy. Congratulations to all the SDZ staff, to Bai Yun, Gao Gao, and Yun Zi.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:46 am
My THANKS to all of SDZ staff, especially the ones caring for Yun Zi….It has been an amazing journey. I am pretty sure, Mommy is going to have a handful soon:-). I love you……
November 17th, 2009 at 11:47 am
My Chinese neighbors are going to be so happy — they immediately said Son of cloud on seeing the choices. I’m happy too, as I broke my two-name losing streak.
Yu Zi — you are the absolutely cutest.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Congratulations on your new name, Yun Zi!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Congratulations to Mama Bai Yun on the naming of her wonderful cubbie, Yun Zi. What a great name for a great Panda. Thanks to all at the San Diego Zoo for sharing this experience with all of us PandaLovers.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Could you tell us how we pronouce his name?
November 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
Fabulous name for a wonderful boy. I am so pleased that mum gets a mention and just wish that papa bear could have been there too.

November 17th, 2009 at 11:49 am

November 17th, 2009 at 11:50 am
On behalf of all of us in the “Virtual Seating” section, many thanks for getting this posted so quickly, dear Yadira. It’s a great write up, too and I loved how you managed to work all of the translations into the blog!
Much Panda Love to young Yun Zi! I can’t wait for the video!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Ooh how wonderful the little baba has finally got a name. Yun Zi (Son of Cloud). Debs
November 17th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Bai Yun IS an extraordinary mother, and I’m so happy that little Yun Zi’s name pays tribute to her.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:52 am
A fitting name for the little guy…Bai Yun should be honored. After all she has given birth to five pandas…what an accomplishment!!
Long live Yun Zi and Bai Yun!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Blessings and a long, healthy life to precious Yun Zi on his naming day. And a multitude of thanks to everyone at SDZ who worked so hard and with so much love to make sure he reached this day.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Wonderful news on the name, I think it is so fitting to his Mom. She is an extrodinary bear and the 5 cubs she has produced will go on to do wonders for the species…
and… it was the name I voted for
Thanks for the super quick post here and on facebook…. Gotta love everyone involved in todays ceremonies.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:53 am
That is a cute name!!! I voted for Xiao Wei, but Yun Zi is a cute name for the little one!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Dear Yadira, there was such a turmoil on the internet going on during the ceremony! A San Diego TV Station announced one name as the winner (Fu Sheng) and ten minutes later the actual one (Yun Zi)… They had to correct it! What excitement! By the way, Son of Cloud was my favorite
November 17th, 2009 at 11:54 am
I am so happy that little Yun Zi now officially has his name, that I cried. He looks so content now, too, sitting with his mama and contemplating the world outside his den. Congratulations little Yun Zi, as the Son of a Cloud, you are truly an extraordinary little dragon and an eternally blessed bear. We wish you many happy days in your blissful home of San Diego and wherever your dreams may lead.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:54 am
He seems to be crawling today!!!! Yeah!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Congrats to our little Yun Zi on receiving his name today!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:55 am

November 17th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Hooray!!! It had to be “Son of Cloud”, what other name would fit such a fine little pumpkin head!!!! Love, love, love Bai Yun and Yun Zi!!!!!! And Goa Goa…ok ok, love to all of the family!!
xoxoxoxoxo
November 17th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Yun Zi what a beautiful tribute to his great momma, and a beautiful name, son of cloud gratz lil guy,
November 17th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Yay! Yun Zi was my first choice, although I also was able to cast a vote for Fu Sheng, my second choice.
The other three names were also great, but I think it’s more than appropriate that Bai Yun was honored in this way.
Welcome Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Yay, Yun Zi! Although it was not my first choice (I voted for Yong Xiang, extending my streak of choosing non-winning names!), I must say that I am not surprised that this name won. The only reason I didn’t vote for it was because I wanted Gao Gao to have equal billing!
I bet all you pandafans who were lucky enough to be there had such an exciting, memorable time. Can’t wait to hear more details!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Yippee!!! This makes the 3rd panda cub I have helped name since Su Lin. You guys are awesome and I can’t wait to come down to San Diego to see Mr. Yun Zi. Thank you so much for all the updates.

November 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Son of Cloud is a great name! I’ll have to get used to saying Yun Zi. I’m interested in hearing how the panda fan meet-up went.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am
YIPEE!! Thats the name I picked!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:58 am
I am so pleased that Yun Zi is the cub’s name. I really felt it befitting that Bai Yun should be honored for the amazing mother she is and has been to all of her cubs. As this (may be) her last, what a tribute!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:59 am
Dear Moderator: I hope you had a good time at the Celebration. It’s nice that you get to come out of your office, or den, or closet…
every once in a while to meet the fans. I wish I could have been there, but even though I wasn’t there physically, I was there in spirit. If I had been there I would have come to say “Hello!” and tell you that I appreciate all that you do to make the SDZ panda blogs so much fun and a huge success. I am grateful that we have this site to “talk back” and share in the blogs and all the other panda happenings out there.
Hope you know how appreciated you are!!!!!
Love, Joy
November 17th, 2009 at 11:59 am
I wasn’t able to vote on a name as my computer has been acting up. However, I am thrilled with the name selected. Honoring Bai Yun in the naming process is a beautiful gesture as she is a perfect panda and mother. I couldn’t be more pleased!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Finally!!! I Love his name and I love him…I keep going back to watch “bark” video….oh man he is so darn adorable!! I can’t wait to see him in person…and climbing etc..you didn’t say much about the group of “Panda fans” where there alot of them???? you need to post pics : )
November 17th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Such a wonderful name for a wonderful baby bear and how great that his name honors his wonderful momma!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
The San Diego news media jumped the gun and announced the wrong name! Anyway, I’m thrilled the little guy’s forever name honors his gorgeous and extraordinary mother, Bai Yun. I’ll miss referring to Yun Zi as Plumpers, though, which considering his current weight is an appropriate nickname!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
Congratulations!Yun Zi
November 17th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
How is this pronounced? Please add pronounciation to next blog.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
GLAD TO SEE MY NAME WON.
ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE THE WEB CAM PAGE TO SAY BAI YUN & YUN ZI
November 17th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Hurray!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Congratulations Yun Zi, on your new name. It is very fitting! You are quite the little man now, and there are many names that would have fit perfectly. We are all honored to have been able to participate in this.
SDZ staff, you are wonderful. I wish I could have been there in person for the naming ceremony. Thank you for keeping us routinely informed, and allowing us to read about, and see videos of these magnificent animals. Kudos to you!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
So happy the name I had chosen for him was given to him. Congratulations mother and son. It is a joyful day for all. A name at last.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
YAY… that is the name I voted for. I wish I could’ve been there for the ceremony.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
I voted for Xiao Long, mainly because my last name is Long! But Yun Zi is cute and has a nice ring to it, and I like the tribute to Bai Yun. Very nice!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Beautuful baby bear…son of cloud. Like I said before the baby finally got baptized…congratulations little one. Love you and mama bear. Hugs and kisses to both of you on this special day!! XXOOXO
November 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
How exciting! Yun Zi was my favourite and the name I voted for!! He just looks so much like a Yun Zi! In fact, the voting results were in the same order of my choices, too. I love that he now has an official name! I look forward to hearing more about the exam, too, and hopefull some extreme cuteness moments. I think, also, if this may be Bai’s last cub (depending on her own situation in a few years, etc.) it is nice to have Yun Zi named in honour of her. She is an amazing bear and an amazing mother. It is so hard to know what his personality will truly be like once he is out and about. Will he be a little dragon or a gentle giant? That is the fun that is yet to come. But he will always be Bai Yun’s cub and always look like a cloud! Happy naming day, Yun Zi! We all love you so much!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Yun Zi – YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY – I love that he is Son of Cloud!!!! Thanks for letting us know!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Ahh his name fits him he so cute
November 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Hugs to Yun Zi
November 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
Just perfect. How wonderful to have his own name : )
November 17th, 2009 at 12:06 pm
What a precious name and a wonderful way to recognize his mama, Bai Yun.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
It’s a lovely name. And it is especially wonderful that it honors Bai Yun!
Yun Zi we look forward to watching you grow!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
I am SO happy! This has all been so exciting and so much fun, thank you as always SDZ for including us in such a special event. That is by far the most fitting name for our little Panda Prince. The precious son of Momma Bai Yun, Queen of the Pandas….heehee. And I just adore his 2nd exam pic. Looks like he is practicing an esteemed air of nobility, one to match his new name.
Would anyone know where there are some pics posted of Bai Yun’s parents, Pan Pan and Dong Dong?
Thanx!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
OMG! My favorite name won. This uniquely wonderful little finally has a name. I know we all have our fave nicknames. I had several. i.e., butter-ball, bruiser-man, chubby cubby.
And we will always have our own little endearment. I think this name is special, because it honors his mother, who will be historically one of the most productive bears in American zoos. I do hope there will be others coming later, to all the American zoos, after the current pairs have gone back to their motherland, who will be as productive as Bai Yun and Gao Gao. Congratulations, San Diego Zoo, on this historic occasion. (And thank you for choosing “my” name!)
Sweet dreams today, Son of Cloud. May your life continue to be remarkable.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
So which name won by far the most votes with you guys on the panda team?
November 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
P. S. I suppose I should practice calling him by his proper name, Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
“Son of Cloud” is a wonderful name! I am thrilled to have his wonderful awesome loving mom honored by having a son named after her and what a son he is!!!!! He was a laid back little fellow but still waters run deep and I think we are going to see some fun fun fun action out of this little cutie pie. Thank you for sharing the thrill of something so fun and exciting SDZ and Panda keepers!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
I LOVE IT! I voted for Yun Zi. I wanted him to have a name like his mom because Bai Yun is a super, wonderful hero mommy. PERFECT!!
CONGRATULATIONS YUN ZI and BAI YUN!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Yipppy !!! That was my first choice !! 2nd choice was Fu Sheng. Happiness !!
Congrats on your name little man. Yun Zi is fitting !! Love it !!! =)
November 17th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
A big hello to YUN ZI and I picked this name for him. It is so appropriate to share this new name with Mommie. It was exciting to read your review, Yadira, thank you so much for everyone who looks after our little YUN ZI. I continue to be amazed each day when I check on the family. It is the high point of the day.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
I am so happy! To me, Yun Zi was the perfect name for this cub. I have been watching the cubs since the birth of Mei Sheng. I voted for each of them, but this is a first for me…. I love the little guy, his mom, and his name… this is the first time I picked the right name. All of the names were good, but Bai Yun is so deserving of having one of her little one’s named after her. Many blessings to all of you at SanDiego Zoo…you make us feel a part of your wonderful group. Thank you.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
HOORAY!!! that was my choice. sorry i missed the celebration. God Bless Son of Cloud and his mom:)
November 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
YES! I’m so excited! This is my first cub, tho I do remember the SD newcasters were all gaga over Hua Mei when she first arrived. Yun Zi was my choice, so I’m thrilled. (my husband thinks I’m wacko)…what a close race. Grow strong, Yun Zi and congratulations Mama on cubby’s new name!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Congrats Yun Zi you have now received your name and a nice name at that. It was my choice and it also honors Bai Yun who is a very big part of how this little guy is turning out to be. Watched his last exam. Quite the little character. Cannot forget Gao Gao in all this.
Carry on!

November 17th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
I love the name Yun Zi. That’s what I voted for. Bai Yun is such a wonderful mother. I wish I could have been there this morning but I haven’t been feeling well. I am so excited that he finally has a name. Hope to get to the zoo as soon as I am feeling better.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Yun Zi is a fitting name for such a strong and healthy cub who is blessed to be born to a tender and loving mother Panda. He has already been such a wonderful ambassador for the education and entertainment of all of us who watch dilligently from our desks and laptops across America each and every day. Now he can grow into his personality and his name will become who he is just as he will grow into his name. I could hardly wait to hear his naming announcement today and I truly believe it is a perfect match for him. He will always have his mother’s tender touch to thank for his healthy start and it is fitting that his name will honor her as well as give him strength and love in all his Panda years ahead! Thanks so much for letting all of us share in this growing up moments.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Yun Zi what a perfect name. hello little Yun Zi son of Bai Yun. Couldn’t get a more fitting name than that. It’s so nice to be able to call him something other than chubby cubby, although I’ll miss the name. 13 pounds, wow, he’s growing fast. He’s moving so much today,he must know it was his special day, he’s just crawling all over the place today. I can’t wait to see his exam video, will it be posted later today. I know it’s been a busy day but we’re all anxious to see him him again. Hope he barked again.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
No message from Tai Shan, Su Lin and ZZ yet? I am eagerly waiting to see what would be Yun Zi ’s nicknames…
November 17th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
This is one cute “baby” panda cub!!
I wish his name could have been the one me and my husband had picked which meant “extraordinary bear” The one the was picked is Yun Zi which means “son of cloud”…May he have many wonderful and happy times at the San Diego Zoo!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
Could someone please give us a little clue how to pronounce his name (which I love and voted for!)?
Moderator’s note: You’ll hear it pronounced in the video of the ceremony, which we hope to post soon.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
I am so excited, Yun Zi is the name I voted for. Congrats Yun Zi !!!!!and to Bai Yun and Gao Gao for such a precious little boy. Many thanks to all the wonderful people at SDZ for your hard work and your love and caring for Mama and baby..Yun Zi….Love it !!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
yay, that was the name I voted for! I am 1 for 1 lol. If this is Bai’s last cub, I am so glad he shares part of her name. Its a fitting tribute to such a wonderful mama bear.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
I still think he should have been named Geo Yun (big cloud) but white cloud IS what I voted for so I am VERY happy for the little guy!
It’s SO pandamania!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm

November 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Just back from the ceremony. We had beautiful weather and I met the moderator and her back-up – both are such lovely ladies. When they announced the name, it sounded like: yoon schay … rhymes with moon way … that’s the best I can do for pronounciation. You all know the actual spelling and the meaning. The news media were everywhere and one reporter took my name and asked me some questions. One question I could not answer …. why has this particular bear touched the hearts of so many people around the world? She feels the response is much greater this time … than in the past??? I didn’t know but maybe one of you will have a good answer??? Is it ok to tell you that they passed out a beautiful photo of Yun Zi to everyone who attended the ceremony. I wasn’t expecting it but I will certainly treasure it!! Have a great day everyone.
Moderator’s note: It was so nice to meet you, too, Becky!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Just got on the site to discover baby panda’s name is Yun Si – the name I hoped would be chosen.
Wonderful panda mother – beautiful panda cub and a great team looking after them. Congratulations.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
My favorite name was Xiao Long, little dragon, but I’ve just watched by cam and Yun Zi looked like very happy with his perfect name.
I loved the choise! The name fits perfectly!!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Soooo…. how many virtual seats in all? My mom and I sat in our virtual seats. I sat in my virtual squishy chair, doing my virtual schoolwork+a virtual piano lesson. I wore my virtual invisible panda earrings that I should get when I turn 13. I virtually had my bunnies sit in my lap, and waited virtually watched the invisible virtual ceremony. My mom virtually sat in her comfortable chair and virtually graded my school (which included my virtual cursive test), and gave me a virtual piano lesson, and also virtually disciplined and entertained my brothers during the virtual ceremony. She wore her purple panda T-shirt with Bai and Shi on it, and her red sweatshirt with Bai and Hua on it. I wore my long white t-shirt with a panda with hearts for eyes, and a pink heart on its chest. Yun Zi got an exam, and my cat slept. I will turn 13 in January, and I wish it was a little closer. I will hopefully get panda earrings for Christmas, and my biggest wish is to go to San Diego and meet the Moderator. (Disneyland has become routine.)
Moderator’s note: Let me know when you come to the Zoo!
November 17th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Hello to Yun Zi and “his staff”
– from Alberta, Canada.
I’m so glad Chubby Cubby has become Yun Zi, because the name reflects his beautiful, dedicated mother, who has done so much for panda preservation as well as for SDZ panda fans. I voted for the name for that reason, and “Son of Cloud” is such a wonderful name.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Was that a big smile I saw on Bai’s face? “Ah, my baby is named after me.!”
November 17th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Congratulations Yun Zi -such a perfect name for a perfect little panda. Thanks Yadira for the update. My virtual seats were front row – how lucky was that. I too can’t wait for the nick name. Can’t wait for the video
November 17th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
hey! i just thought of something. now when YUN ZI is acting up as i’m sure he already is BAI YUN won’t have to say HEY YOU or YOU, FURRY ONE or NUMBER 5!! I SAID STOP CHEWING ON MY FACE. she can do what all mother’s do…..YUN ZI……blah blah blah.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
that was a lot to type for and 12 and 10/12 year old!!!!!!!! P. Wong, hope for a conversation of Yun Zi+ ALL his relatives and friends.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Yun Zi is the name I voted for. I would have been happy any of the five names. I unfortunately could not attend the name ceremony. I am so grateful that he was named in honour of his Mom Bai Yun.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Perfect! Congratulations, Son of Cloud, I will call you Little Cloud for your nickname…
I have been watching baby all morning, and he sure has been up, very curious, and happy. On his back for a long while now, playing by himself, sucking on his left paw, is he teething? Earlier, it looked like he was trying to grab and bite momma’s left foot while he was laying at her feet after lunch. He seems to be okay not trying to roll onto his tummy like he usually does. Just content, knowing and feeling all the love and rolling around playing. This is the most like a human baby I’ve seen him to date. Very busy morning for little little man, now off to nap….
Sweet dreams, little cloud.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
So very happy that the name we voted on for him is the one that was chosen, Yun Zi. A very nice tribute to Bai Yun too for all her wonderful mothering and raising this busy happy healthy baby boy we have called Alex for 104 days!!! We are hooked on the web cam and find ourselves mesmerized and blessed to be a part of this new little bundle. Bai Yun we commend you!!
SDZ staff keep up the good work and we’ll see you soon.

November 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
I guessed that is what he would be called, it wasn’t the one I voted for but was in my top 2.
Will the video clip of the ceremony be up soon? (Silly question)
November 17th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Wow–I’m 2 for 2 with names on the two I’ve voted for.
Congratulations to His Royal Wonderfulness, 13.2 adorable pounds, Mr. Yun Zi!!!! Bring on the exam video!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
He will also be very YZ!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Love the name!!!! He is still the extraordinary bear son of cloud….May he live a long and happy life!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:13 pm

luv, Lani, Xman, Mama and Daddy.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Auntie Mei Xiang, Unka Tian Tian and Cousin Tai Shan at the National Zoo send their congratulations to Nephew Yun Zi on his new name. Tai wants his widdle tuzzin to know: “You’s name is weally, weally kool! It’s ALMOST as kool as mine!” Tai just got slapped upside the head by his Mommy Mei for being sassy to his baby cousin. He apologizes.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Congratulations Son of Cloud! All the names were great and hard to choose from but it seems fitting that he is named to honor his mother who has raised 4 cubs so diligently already. And he has daddy’s webbed toes and his calm demeanor so Gao Gao is not forgotten either nor will he ever be! I hope all of you that attended the naming ceremony had a great time with the moderators!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
I did not mean to say White Cloud…I meant to say….Son of Cloud…..
November 17th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Welcome YUN ZI!!!! A perfect name for a perfect Bamboozler and Homage to a great Mom as well!!!!My wife Lynn was in Medical Treatment in Ithaca,NY at the time and I’m waiting for her reaction to the voice mail that I left her as I’m sure this will make her day after 11 monthes in various Medical Facilities in the Northeast….Can’t wait for the editor to get done with the Video of the naming ceremony…. And many Thanks to all my Friends that have sent their best wishes to Lynn’s recovery both at SDZ and via Internet,we hope to see you all either in person or through the Pandaholics Blogs…..
November 17th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I am thrilled with the name selected as it truly honors the magnificent Bai Yun!!!! Congratulations all around, SDZ!!
While sitting in my virtual seat during the ceremony watching PandaCam, Bai Yun visited the den and took her newly named son, Yun Zi for a walkabout! Here’s the link for the video “Presenting Yun Zi ~ Son of Cloud”

November 17th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Yeah, yeah, yeah!! This is the name I voted for. Congratulations, Yun Zi! I think it is wonderful that our little boy is partly named after his mum. Bai Yun definitely deserves that tribute was also paid to her. Thank you SDZ team for all you have done to make this naming ceremony such a memorable one! Even if I was only able to witness the ceremony in my virtual seat.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Congratulations, Yun Zi! Though I did not make it to your naming ceremony, I was there in spirit. I will see you on the first day of your exhibit…
With all my love and affection to you and your family…
Dianne in Texas, count me in on the “Pandaholics convention.”
Moderators, thank you; though I don’t blog often (busy finishing my second book), you can be assured that I read all the entries, and have my panda cam on 24/7 (1 out of 3 laptops is on exclusively for my Yun Zi – I can see him now snoozing on his back!)

What a wonderful tribute to the incredible Bai Yun. Big hugs to Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Congratulation from Germany !! A beautiful name for a famous boy ! Good luck for your life , Yun Zi !!!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
It’s so good to know Bai Yun’s cute little cub has a name now. I’m happy to find out it was the one I voted for. We love watching mom and cub and seeing the exam videos. We wish Yun Zi a long happy life. Much thanks for the wonderful staff there that keeps us informed. All the pandas are beautiful.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Yeah! I voted for Yun Zi.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I think Miss ZZ is excited about little brother’s new name too–she was hanging by her heels a minute ago before settling down for a nap.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
WOW – I have won the lotto. This is the name I picked for him. Wonderful tribute to the most awesome mom ever. May Yun Zi be blessed his entire life with as much love as he holds from all of us today. Thanks to ALL at SDZ for sharing this precious gift with us. I have treasured every moment I have spent with them.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I cheated! I got on SDZ’s Twitter page, and found out the name of the cub from there! Yun Zi fits him! I got 2 panda postcards on my list, too! The first one was a great closeup by your very astute meerkat cam people when Yun Zi was having his lunch! The 2nd one was Yun Zi in his den laying down on his side sound asleep! Oh yeah!! A big day for him for sure! He even had his 12th vet exam today, and I figured that was coming because every time you all have had a name ceremony for the other cubs, they were getting their weekly exam on the same day! Yun weighing in at 13 pounds!! WOW!!! Nice, round, plump, roly poly little cub! Well, now that this cub has finally got his new name, we will have to get used to saying it for a very long time, and it is easy to say, too! I did check the list of names and how many votes they got, and the one I chose, Xiao Long, came in 2nd place! YEA!!! A lot of people liked that name, too!

I also got on the AZ pandacam twice today. The first time was when Lun was sitting on the ground eating her boo, and Xi Lan was up on the log structure with a big bundle of boo eating his fair share and making sure momma doesn’t steal any of it! Smart little Xman! The next time I got on the cam, Lun was eating boo, and Xman was napping on the log structure! I finally got some Xi time today!
Well, gonna go and check the panda cams again. It has been a little crazy around our apt. complex today! We’re getting our new doors put in, and the noise has been almost nonstop! My ears are ringing, and my cat is hiding!! Oh well, at least our cub finally has a real name to call his own!
Will be back later on for the video of the exam and the ceremony!

My poor heart started to pound from the excitment. You are right though, all of the names are fitting for such a great little guy.

I am very happy that Yun Zi has been officially named. What a glorious day for Bai Yun and Gao Gao, the San Diego Zoo, all the doctors, keepers, helpers, and moderators! Congratulations especially to our own “Yun Zi”. How proud we are of you! My cup is overflowing with such pride and love for all of you. May GOD bless you baby “Yun Zi” today and all the days of your life.

To Becky (113)
Thank you for your first-hand and documented report of the ceremony. As to why this particular bear has touched the hearts of so many people around the world, my answers would be
1- because he is very cute
2- because he is very cute
3- because he is very cute
4- because he is very cute
5- because he is very cute
6- because he is very cute
7- because he is very cute
8- because he is very cute
9- because he is very cute
and 10- let me see… maybe because he is very cute.
More seriously, I also think that being able to see this cub grow live online 24/24 7/7, we all feel like this is our own baby and we kind of develop special links with him like a real mother with her child. Personally, I had a lot of time when Mei Sheng was born and I could afford to watch him to my content. Then I consider him now as MY baby, no matter how old he is and where he lives.
To Sukochi Lee (127)
“He is very YZ”. You mean wise, don’t you? EXCELLENT! He surely will be!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Congratulations to Yun Zi. I’m sure his Panda family and the SDZ Panda Team are happy to now start using a real name for him.
#31, CijiDunne – Since we have an X-man in Atlanta, why not have a Z-man in San Diego. I’m sure he will keep some of his nicknames until he grows a little more. He’s adorable and I expect him to be like our X-man when it comes to keeping his Mom on the run.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Little Yun Zi–the world couldn’t be happier for you on this special day. You are so precious. Love to you and mom.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Love his name. It fits him well. I’m sure he’ll have many nicknames though. Such a gorgeous boy. I have really enjoyed following all the pandas since Tai was born. Not a day goes by that I don’t check on them. Thanks so much San Diego for all the care you give all our animals. Much love to YUN ZI.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
He is gorgeous! What a little love! I have enjoyed so much watching him and now he has a beautiful name just like his beautiful Mom…in her honor. How special! Much love to you Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
When i seen his new name i got the chills >>>what a wonderful name for such a precious baby>>Mama is such a wonderful mom and she is very deserving of her baby being named after her. All is well ! Thank your so much for letting all of us be a part of this wonder miracle of life.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Yun Zi fits him perfectly!! I knew it would be Yun Zi I just knew it!
congrats 2 the newly name cub!!! <3
November 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I love the name and voted for it not only because it pays tribute to his wonderful (and also cute!) mom, but because it fits him, since he is round, fluffy and very white (on his white parts, of course
). All my love to Yun Zi and Bai Yun!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Happy Naming Day, Yun Zi! Your new name fits you perfectly! I can’t wait to meet you. Congrats to the entire Panda Family (including the Zoo staff )
November 17th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Moderater, is the video of the exam and the naming ceremony going to be posted today?
Moderator’s note: I hope so! If not today, then first thing tomorrow.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Congratulations!! Once again, tears down for such a blessed name. I love X-Man as nickname also.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Honorable Mother must be so pleased with her Son’s name!
It is fitting that he is called Yun Zi.
Bai Yun tends him night and day with a mother’s care and love.
Bamboo cocktails for all , on this Wonderful Day ! Cheers!!!
Thank you Moderator for getting the news out to all we Virtual guests at the Naming Ceremony!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
What an exciting day – even from my virtual seat. Yun ZI is the name I voted for but would have been happy with any of the other
#113 – Becky of San Diego – How fortunate you were to have been at the ceremony – and to get a photo of YunZi !! wow – am envious.
I think there may be several reasons so many more are following this cub – many more know of the panda cams, many may have heard of the plight of the pandas after the earthquake and most important is the fact that this is Bai’s 5th cub born after natural mating. Bai & pappa Gao are major ambassadors
#134 – Doxie Mom – awww – seems like Bai & Yun ZI knew something important was going on -thanks again
November 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Boyfriend was a bit late but we made to the ceremony after it had just started….thanks to a shuttle bus that took us right to the location! 35 minutes from my door to ampitheater.
The crowd sort of sighed when the name was announced. They had a large video screen showing all his exams and I think there was an exam today that isn’t posted yet.
I thought they pronounced it like Hung Jee or Ji…… not like his mother’s pronouncation.
It was more like a J instead of the Z……and the Hung part isn’t the Yun part…..
I kept trying to repeat the name after they said it a few times. Still sort of messed up on it.
Had lunch at the new restaurant by the new and huge elephant exhibit. Stopped by to enjoy the meerkats……sunning themselves in a group. Watched the organutans carry on and they love to look inside purses and at what you pull out of them. Very interactive.
So all and all it was a pleasant day with wonderful weather….and I did wear my light weight orange jacket.
Also tons of cameras were around the stage. I am sure there will be lots of news coverage of this all over the world……lots of news trucks in parking lot!
Moderator’s note: I looked for you and your orange jacket, Jeslyn, but I didn’t see you! But am so glad you and your special guy enjoyed the morning and lunch at our new Sabertooth Grill!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
I am so glad the name I voted for got picked. Little Yun Zi has his name. I swear last night Bai Yun was telling him he was getting his name. They were so playful. It was cute to watch. Thank you SDZ for all you do.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
It is quite an honor to have been able to take part in the naming of the newest chubby cubbie. I, too, voted for Yun Zi. That’s a perfect name for Bai Yun’s youngest , and possibly last, offspring. She is such a perfect mother and deserves to be honored in this way. Thank you to the staff of SDZ for allowing us to participate. You all deserve our thanks for taking such good care of all the Giant Pandas at SDZ and to contributing to the research that is being conducted to save this most precious resource from disappearing from this planet.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I LOVE his name! I had a very tough time picking one. It’s not what I voted for but I have yet to vote for a winning name. It’s only right that he should be named after Queen Bai. He is going WAY over the panda cuteness meter these days!
Thanks for the virtual seat – it was the best one (once I see the video!)
November 17th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Oh happy day! He was nursing during the cermonies, as the cam was keeping a watchful eye on him and mom. I voted for his name Yun Zi, son of cloud, for he is truely the son of a wonderful woman and mother, Bai Yun, white cloud. Blessings to Bai, daddy Gao, and all their beautiful siblings. Cheers to all who care for them at the S.D. Zoo.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Yes, he does have an extraordinary mother, but as I was looking at the photos of Yun Zi today, I realized that he has MANY extraordinary moms – the members of the San Diego staff, all female (at least the ones who are pictured), who we see performing his exams. The looks on their faces as they look at, measure, hold, carry, and examine him reveal their love for him and concern for his well-being. He’s a lucky bear!
November 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Oh my, what an exciting ceremony! Need I tell you that the moment it began, the faucets opened, and I sobbed like a baby, just so overcome with emotion at being there. I got to sit next to Mr. George Gildred, who apparently is responsible way back in 1978 for having thought of a panda exchange, which then went into effect. Lots of pictures taken with the Panda Fans (us!!!) and not just with my camera. The press was all over it!
As we all arrived, and throughout the various talks, there were videos overhead of Yun Zi, from wee baby to his strapping 13-pound self today. And then….You could have heard a pin drop when it was time to announce his name. Against a beautiful backdrop, the curtains were opened, and there was a picture of our beautiful boy, with his name underneath. Even though I didn’t vote for Yun Zi, somehow it seemed absolutely perfect in that moment, and more tears were shed – of joy, of course!!!
I chatted briefly with Lisa, Juli and Kathy, the keepers, and certainly let them know how very much we all appreciate the tremendous work that they do. And of course, I teased them about surreptitiously cadging a cuddle now and again. They all agreed that he is one cute patootie, and laid back doesn’t even begin to describe him. He is perfectly calm and immensely curious, especially as he has gotten more mobile.
It was wonderful to hear during the various talks that the San Diego Zoo has made such an enormous impact on the conservation, not only of pandas, but other breeds as well. Kudos to our zoo! We are recognized world-wide for the 5 cubs born here, and of course, who deserves that honor, but our wonderful panda mother Bai Yun.
One thing I loved that was said in response to when the cub would be on display – it’s ALL up to Bai Yun, not the zoo keepers! Lisa did indicate that they tried to coax Bai Yun out today with not only some fresh bamboo but some treats, and she was having absolutely none of it! Not leaving her baby boy! Isn’t she just the greatest mom?
And yes, we did all receive a photo of His Wonderfulness, forever named Yun Zi. Becky did a great job transliterating the name phonetically – I can’t stop pronouncing it with the the little lilt that the Chinese deputy used. I took a bazillion photos, and will hope to post them up on Facebook tomorrow. Will let you all know when I do.
All in all, a spectacular morning, and a moment to be extremely proud of our little boy, our mamma, and our zoo!
Congratulations!
Moderator’s note: It was fun watching you have so much fun with the keepers, Liana! And I hope your little grandson, who wasn’t able to come after all due to illness, will be feeling up to a Zoo visit soon!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Congratulations to our precious little boy — YUN ZI is a fine name and suits you to a tee.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
How lovely! I hope Bai Yun feels all the joyous vibrations from the excitement over her honor.
I was very distressed this morning when Google Alerts sent a link to a story that began, “The name of the first giant panda brought to the United States in 1936 is now the name of the new panda cub at the San Diego Zoo.” That would have been around 3:30 AM San Diego time! Oh, no, a leak! I couldn’t believe anyone on our beloved Panda Team would spoil the surprise. Well, the story went on to report that the new panda’s name, Su Lin, got 44% of 70,000 votes.
Hmmmmm. The paper is the Daily Aztec, published by San Diego State students. I think some journalism professor has serious work to do!
For the rest of us, it’s lifting a glass (virtual or real) to the Man of the Hour, our Little Mr. Z, The Chubster, our Baby Cloud, Yun Zi.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
YAHOO! Congrats to Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Such a sweetie and a great name. I checked in from work today to see what was picked and was happy to see it was the one I voted for. He is a special bear.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Thank you Liana /San Diego #168 – What a wonderful description of the naming ceremony – I just feel like I was there – and I have just shed a few Australian tears of jpy for our (sorry your) little exquisite panda Yun Zi and his beautiful mummy Bai Yun – I have enjoyed this journey so much – only 27 days until I see Wang Wang and Funi in Adelaide
November 17th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Well it took me alittle while to be able to start to type because I was so teary eyed I coildn’t see the screen. Though his name was not my choice, when I read it I was filled with chills and such emotion. I knew he is “son of cloud” Then I watched Doxeymom’s video. I realized “times are a changing” to quote Bob Dylan. Bai is entering her next stage of mothering and Yun Zi obviously entering his new adventures into life. But so much activity between them both on this day, like they knew something was up and they were celebrating in their own way. I feel so happy for all of you who could be present there today. Think of yourselves as the ambassadors for all the Pandaholics on this site. You too Moderators. You are our lifeline to our bears. How you have participated openly and patiently with all the blogs and updates has caused world wide continual interest which could only help the Bears in the long run. What a sweet thing has entered into our lives. Don’t you think?
November 17th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
What a wonderful name and a wonderful connection to his mother. She is superb! Thanks to all the staff at the San Diego Zoo for letting us be a part of this important name day. I kept checking my computer at work after 2:00 (EST) and jumped for joy when I saw the results.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
CONGRATULATIONS!
I love his name – YUN ZI. For sure super mom – Bai Yun is so honored and so proud of his little angel.
I love watching the panda cam everyday, it makes my day complete.
Everyday, I also check you blogs for new updates for the pandas out there.
Thank you San Diego Zoo for the job well done.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
Congratulations to Yun Zi! I was one of the voter voted for this name!
I plan to visit the Zoo in mid January, does the cub has a schedule for exhibit? I hope I am able to make it before Su Lin sending back to China by that time!!! Can’t wait to see the most famous panda family!!!!
Thanks so much for all the keepers, vets, workers who dedicate their work on the pandas and this website to keep the panda fans updates!!!
Moderator’s note: There is no schedule based on human time for Yun Zi’s debut; it’s all up to Bai Yun. However, his brother and sisters were ready to be out on exhibit during December, so although we can’t promise anything, chances are he’ll be out of the den when you visit.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
To All: The visit to the SDZ today was a very Special Treat! Frist of all, I headed right down to Panda Canyon to see if “The Sisters” were awake on their little brother’s big day! They were! Counting myself eternally blessed, I photo’d and filmed to my heart’s content because there were only about 5 visitors watching Su and Zhen munch away on bamboo; Su was up close to the front and Zhen had tucked herself back in a corner so I was glad to have a zoom camera
I then wandered up Cat Canyon to look for Hunte Arena. Finding if close by, I wandered back down to ‘The Girls’. Sweet Su had climbed up to the top of her hut for a morning nap
Zhen Zhen showed how she climbs her tree
There was a nimble little squirrel who became a motivator for the climb. Bless that little squirrel!!! While watching Zhen zoom, I got to eavesdrop on a conversation between one of the keepers….I think it was Anastasia…and perhaps her Dad. So here’s the scoop: This morning, while the keepers were waiting for Bai to leave the den so the baby could receive his name day exam, Bai decided to wait the keepers out. She was even offered a chance to go out into the classroom area…Bai wouldn’t even go into her patio area
Finally she did leave the den and the exam could be completed
And, Yes! There was a large red sign indicating where all you ‘Virtual attendees’ were ’seated’.
At the top of the stage, there was…let’s call it a mini-jumbotron which was displaying moments of little one’s birth and subsequent exams. Very Neat!!! Then, the moment arrived and baby’s name was announced!!! As Yun Zi was pronounced, a curtain opened with his photograph and his name imprinted on a large poster
Now, here’s a phoentic pronunciation as I heard it: YuuunJaaa. (long vowel ‘U’, a definite ‘J’, a long vowel ‘A’. However, I’ll defer to the official video for a completely correct pronunciation

The naming ceremony was very NEAT! Two of the SDZ Trustees, a Representative from China, Dr. Ron Swaisgood (sp?) spoke about the pandas, the relationships with China and the SDZ. And, all you bloggers…twice Bloggers were mentioned as a way the pandas are given world wide awareness
Naturally, I went back down to see ‘The Girls’ one more time. They were both sound asleep on their logs
I will tell you that the Baby Sun Bears were AWAKE and Playing!!! I then went up to Christmas shop for my Grands. Here’s a hint: Online shopping at the Zoo store as well as members showing their card will give a 10% savings to purchases until Dec. 1st. Have Fun!!!
To SDZ: Thank You ALL for the Joy you bring to every single visitor (virtual included) who visits this remarkable zoo!!!! We are all blessed!!!
Moderator’s note: Bobbie, it was so great to meet you! Glad to hear you had such a productive visit.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
I hope Panda Fans will continue to see videos of the Cub’s exams. I noticed that the 12 exam video was not posted.
Moderator’s note: We will continue to post videos of the exams as soon as we can get them edited and prepared for the Web.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Will there be a video of today’s naming exam?
November 17th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
What a regal name. I’m so excited and pleased. He makes his momma proud and will continue to do so. Had this day on my calendar like all the rest of us panda fans. Now I can rest easy knowing our boy is properly named.
November 17th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Yippeeee! Yun Zi was the name that I voted for as well. How very exciting. Can’t wait for the video. Thank you #168 Liana and #178 Bobbie for your descriptions of what took place. I love the “large red sign indicating where all you virtual attendees were seated”. I love it! How very cool of SDZ to think of everybody. I can see that you all enjoyed your day immensely. And you too, Moderator, I hope. You deserved to meet some of the people you blog with! Hope you had a wonderful time.
Moderator’s note: It was a wonderful, exciting morning, made all the more special by meeting some of the people who leave such lovely comments on our blogs!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I have posted pictures of the beautiful gift given to guests at the ceremony.

It was a beautiful day for the naming ceremony. Lots of fun seeing many faces and names. Thank you to the staff at the San Diego Zoo for all of the love that you give to our wonderful ambassadors. And a big thanks to Bai Yun and Gao Gao for making this day possible.
It was nice for the speakers at the ceremony to recognize the bloggers on many occasions. Thanks to the moderators for making this day special for all of us.
Moderator’s note: It truly was our pleasure!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Love the name!!!!! He’s an awesome little bear to watch. I keep the panda-cam rolling at my office all day!!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Ooops, was going back over the blog reading more carefully. Thank you Becky #113 too for your comments about the ceremony! All of us who weren’t there sure enjoyed reading about the ceremony and all the little details. Can’t wait for the video!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
yun zi!! i voted 4 that …….yay!!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Great choice for such a special little bear and for a wonderful mother who should have a cub named in her honor. She has done San Diego proud by having these 5 wonderful babies and doing such a terrific job! Can you please post the correct way to pronounce Yun Zi????
Moderator’s note: Say “Yoon Zhee”
November 17th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
It is true. Little Yun Zi got a very special charm. By watching him growing everyday, my awareness and understanding of this endangered species is also growing. This tiny fluffy chubby bear has moved me to seek more information about the Giant Panda online (videos, articles). The realization that these beloved animals are doomed to extinction have sometimes brought me to tears. Now I understand why Bai Yun is so dedicated to her cub, why she (as a representation of the struggle of an entire species to survive) dedicates herself with so much love and eagerness to raising wonderful Yun Zi. Thanks SDZ, for your important, urgent, lovely dedication to the Giant Panda! God bless you all!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
to Gloria, #149 … my first response to that question was … because he is so cute …. but she seemed to be unsure of why so many people seem to interested in this bear … and I did not know.
to Maureen, #161 … you should have been talking to the reporter … great thought about the earthquake in China and the greater awareness of pandas …. I bet that is the answer she was looking for!
to Liana, #168 … what a beautiful and accurate description of the ceremony. We are so blessed to have these beautiful bears at our zoo!! It makes us part of something bigger than we are … making the world a better place.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Well, I’m thrilled Yun Zi got the name I voted for. I felt it was only fitting to be named after either his mother or father. Gao Yun was my choice to honor both parents but it didn’t make the cut. Yun Zi is perfect “son of cloud” and so he is the son of our beautiful and wonderful mother Bai Yun. I am going to be at the zoo in Feb. and will look forward to seeing all my favorite pandas especially the newest cubby…Yun Zi.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I haven’t seen a notation about a video of todays exam, I am sure one is coming, right? Thanks.
Moderator’s note: Yes, soon. Patience…
November 17th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I’m watching YUN ZI (love it!) flailing around on those legs right now. Once he gets them working together, he is going to be off like a shot! All the energy he is exerting now but he just doesn’t get very far!! What a trooper!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
oh i voted for Yun Zi. ..i like this name if Gao Yun not in the vote list. Before i got wrong info from China stuff, they told me , it was Fu Sheng, maybe they just kidding me…best wishes to Yun Zi and San deigo zoo.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Yay! That is the name I voted for and I had a feeling that this would be the winner! Congrats
November 17th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Yun Zi is sooooo precious and super-adorable!!
Even though that wasn’t the name I picked for him…I still like it!
Wish I could’ve been at the ceremony, but can’t wait for his debut…hopefully soon! =)
November 17th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I am so thrilled with baby’s new name!! This is the one I voted for. Such an appropriate name for “our” little boy!! I can’t wait to see the video of the ceremony as well as the video of the weekly exam!!
Welcome Yun Zi!! You are loved by ALL the panda fans!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
I am glad YUN ZI is named that. It is a cool name. I voted for YUN ZI. YUN ZI is a big love bug in the clouds.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Congratulations to Bai, Gao Gao, Yun Zi and the San Diego Zoo. I am so glad that you’ve selected the name that I voted for. This is a wonderful way to honor hero mother Bai Yun.
I received an email today annoucing a pre-order special adoption of Yun Zi. I was waiting until the officlal naming ceremony to adopt him. Now I’m a virtual mom to Yun Zi!
Moderator’s note: Congratulations, “momma”!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Moderator…..I apologize if I sounded less than patient. lol Anxious works !!! You do such a wonderful job!!!! Forgive me!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
How wonderful that his name will always honor his mother.
I was away all day,and just got home. First thing was go to the computer to find out what his name is. Can hardly wait for the video. This Panda Cam has been disastrous for me because I’m always watching and not doing what I should do at home. I’m loving it.
Thank you to the SDZ and the staff who take the videos and write informing us of all the wonderful happenings with “The Family”.
November 17th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Yaay…I find this exciting. I voted for him to be named after mom. My students will be excited, too.
Yaaaay!!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
#178 Bobbie:
Thank you!
Your post made me feel like I was there…
November 17th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Hooray! The name is perfect, that’s the one I voted for too!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
WOW!! Congrats to baby Yun Zi, a perfect name! HUGE KUDOS to everyone at the San Diego Zoo!! Watching the webcams I actually feel like I’m looking down from a cloud watching White Cloud and Son of Cloud and everything feels alright in the world. How brilliant are the webcams! All of the amazing interaction at the SDZ website as well as the cutest chubby cubby in the world have inspired me to visit the zoo in my home town and donating to animal conservation. Thank you for letting us be apart of these pandas’ lives. Lots of love! I love Yun Zi and Bai Yun!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I like that name for that panda cub that is the right name for him! He sure is a cutie.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
I’m finding it hard to remember the cub’s name because I’m used to Yun being the second part (as in Bai Yun) not the first part.
Great name!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
its not rolly polly but still a cute name
November 17th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Yun Zi my your future be nice and your name give you luck. I have followed you since your first breath and I send you my love all the way from Sweden. I belive I saw your mother when in San Diego -08 and mybea my dream come true and I will see you to.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
It is evening here in the Rogue River Valley in Southern Oregon (just across the California border) and I am visiting with my 96-yr old mother who had a pacemaker installed today.
I am so happy to hear that our little cub is now known as Yun Zi, and I voted for that name. It does appear it was quite a “race to the finish.”
So Yun Zi it is, and we don’t have to call him “the cub” anymore!
Have fun, y’all. I will return later to read the blogs for today. I am at an assisted living place and just glad to find a computer.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
AWESOME!!!! I knew he would be named after his Mommy! I’m so in love with little Yun Zi. He’s cute and captivating. I love to watch him on the Panda Cam! I’m very excited to continue to watch this precious little guy grow and play!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:23 pm
I love the name Yun Zi and I was so hoping it would win. It is honorable but also has an adorable ring to it! Hmmm… Son of Cloud….. little “Sonny” for those who want a nickname! He is just too cute for words and I can’t wait to see what fascinating, DARLING new moves he has coming our way! Thanks to all at SDZ for including all of us.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Congrats to ALL …. an absolutely perfect name …. I feel so much better knowing he has a name now!!!
I bet his dear Mama Bai Yun is happy too. Kisses and many hugs …. ZOWIE!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
#183 SAN di – Thank you so much for sharing your gift that was presented to you today. That is just the most perfect picture of our precious little Panda Prince (aka Yun Zi). I am so happy that you were able to be a part of the festivities. Making wonderful memories seems to be one of the many things SDZ does on an everyday basis
November 17th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Welcome…officially…to our Yun Zi. Thank you for the virtual seats. It took a couple of minutes to get my granddaughter to quit jumping up and down on mommy and daddy’s bed in excitement though.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Yay! I love that Yun Zi finally has a name, and to honor his mommy!
I wish I could’ve been at the ceremony, but unfortunately don’t live near San Diego. Is or will there be a video of the ceremony? Thanks again, I just loved watching this little panda grow up!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
He will always be Roly Poly to me.

We voted for Yun Zi, it was the best of the bunch to vote on, although I think “small but mighty” Gao Gao deserves SOME credit!!!
I love them all, thank you for working so hard to mak us all so happy with all the pands news!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Congradulations on your name of Yun Zi. I now am three for three. I picked Sun Lin as I had just finished reading the book about the panda with her name. I also picked Z Z”s name. I am on a roll as I also picked the correct names for Tai Shan from D.C. and the two pandas in Atlanta. May you grow to be big and strong and just like your mother.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
What a wonderful fitting name for our little guy. And what a wonderful tribute to momma. I am so happy.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I’m soooooooooo excited that he got his name! I totally a fan and I can’t wait to see the viedo. Its so cool and I am so wanting to go back! He is sooooooo cute and so is Bai Yun. Its awesome that they have a new little face to share. For a 104 days old, he is the cutest baby panda I’ve ever seen! I think his name’s backround is’’son of cloud” adorable! My friends will be so happy and will LOL! Peace out and you rock Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
We voted for Xiao Long, but we’re glad to know that Baby P finally has name! That little wigglebear is growing up so fast!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
I just watched the video – combination of his exam and the naming ceremony. He is just so darned cute. Thanks for getting this out so quickly after such a busy, busy day.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
The name chosen was very disappointing. Our roly poly has been and will continue to be an “extraordinary bear” Who is deserving of a name in his own right! Xiong Wei was the perfect name. It’s a shame that other people could not see that.
Bai Yun has been an exemplary mother, but roly was her fifth cub and she may have more, and anyone who counts already knows that roly was one of her cubs! It wasn’t necessary to have his name identify him as being hers. It’s Ridiculous!
I think the naming process needs to be changed for next time. As for me, I refuse to refer to roly poly as Yun Zi.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
I feel like I won a prize today, as Yun Zi is the name I voted for — one of the 28%! How exciting!
Unfortunately, the best-laid plans oft go awry, and I was not able to be there. I was up in good time, but my current plague, fibromyalgia, reared its ugly head, and I hurt all over. I knew that there was little chance I’d be able to endure a day out in too-bright sunlight, walking up and down hills and stairs, etc. There’s just so much my body will tolerate these days. I’m so disappointed that I could not be there, as I really looked forward to meeting the people I’m beginning to know through these blogs, both keepers, moderators, bloggers, and Pandamaniacs from all walks of life. I hope there’ll be other opportunities to meet some of you at other celebrations. And I’m just delighted that the name I voted for actually won! Wow, it really was close vote!
Hail to thee, Yun Zi, and to your mother, Bai Yun! May you have a long and happy life, both here at the San Diego Zoo and at your eventual home in your species’ birthplace, China. I look forward to keeping watch over you via Panda Cam and seeing you in person when you are ready to be on exhibit with your mom! Congratulations on your new name!
Moderator’s note: Christie, I’m so sorry to hear this wasn’t one of your “good” days; we missed you!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I liked reading Liana’s blog……and she is good to remember the names of the speakers.
I saw where George Gildred stood up…right in the bloggers area. Since I came in late, I stood up in the shade by the musician with the lovely music playing.
I so wish I could have stopped to meet and greet and chat with all of you…..but the boyfriend was wanting to get out fast…..as usual. I think being in groups at this point, with illness around, he just likes to keep his distance.
Thank you to the zoo employees who passed out the favors to the visitors…..
I am sending one to an avid fan in New Jersey. She will be surprised to view it!
It was a lovely ceremony.
Also thank you to Doxiemom for today’s videos. You do such a great job. I loved Yun Zi and his chewing on mom’s paw…….guess that is what teething causes!
November 17th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
I’m so glad the chubby little guy now has a name, Yun Zi. I chose that name for him because, being of Chinese descent, I’m familiar with how a baby boy – or son – is valued in my culture. Yun Zi is a doll and I fully expect him to make Bai Yun proud!
November 17th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
It looks like Yun Zi see’s his reflection in the window. Is that what’s happening?
November 17th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Attending the naming ceremony — in a word– inspiring! While the big moment was about hearing our cub’s official name for the first time, the event, as a whole was so much bigger. I felt that China-USA was one…all of us together celebrating our successes, yet realizing we have much more work to do to continue on the path towards further understanding of this incredible species and how conservation efforts can increase the population in a natural and positive way.
What a cool experience to meet our wonderful moderator and a few of my fellow bloggers. Plus–meeting a few of the keepers. WOW! How nice it was for some of them to take time to say hello to us following the ceremony. Each of us walked away with a beautiful photograph of Yun Zi–his first portrait! It’s on my office wall where I can view it anytime I want.
Thank you again to all at the SDZ for opening this amazing world to us. I continue to learn and be inspired by all that you do for our environment and our animals.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Hi everyone, I finally found a space where I could share my excitement of having helped to choose his name. It’s a wonderful name, and very appropriate for him. He’s such a cutey and I never tire of watching him and his beautiful mom. Thanks to all who helped vote for “Yun Zi.” I wish I could have been there at the ceremony. It sounds like everyone had a great moment in time. Thanks to all the keepers for taking good care of our animals.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Bai Yun must be really tired from the naming ceremony
She is at this time 6:12 PST laying on her back with all four paws up with Yun Zi laying right by her! After all it was a big day for her knowing what to call her son instead of “baiby”! I love the fact that he was named Son of Cloud..she deserves to have a great cubby named after such a great mother. This is the first panda I have watched from the beginning and I have fallin in love with them. I have pictures from when I took my niece to the SDZ of some pandas about 4 years ago, but sadly I have no idea of who is who in those. You can bet for now on when I go that I will know. It is sad that I live here in San Diego, but have only been to the zoo twice:( But that will change! I will now be there at least twice a month if not more…time to mail in my membership next time I get it in the mail unless I can join there!
Moderator’s note: Yes, you can renew at the Zoo! Visit the Membership booth to the right of the main ticket booths, and then step through the gate and enjoy your zoo!
November 17th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
Dear Bai…….I wish you knew how beloved you are to so many people around the world. We so honor you! We honor your precious son with a name befitting YOUR son. Yun Zi! Bai, you have contributed so much to the panda world, and so much to us humans. Thank you………..you are already a legend.
Dear Yun Zi…….you were named today. I wish you knew that we honored your fantastic momma by naming you after her. I’m sure you will live up to her honor and then some! I can’t call you Chubby Cubby anymore. Well, maybe for a little while longer. You are the cutest little thing. Your eyes could hold me forever.
Yadira: well written and very clever! Thank you for the news. I’m glad I used the last 4 minutes on my internet plan while in Tahiti to vote for my favorite name.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Love the name, it fits him perfectly…that’s the name I voted for and it’s extra special to me because he received his name on my birthday…makes my day special too. Love this little guy, he’s so adorable I just want to come to San Diego and snuggle him close!
Moderator’s note: Happy Birthday! Have an extra piece of cake in Yun Zi’s honor!
November 17th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Well, I sure was wrong when I told the moderator yesterday to be prepared for a barrage of complaints once the cub’s name was announced
In the past it seemed that more than half the bloggers were unhappy with the name chosen & were very vocal. From what I’ve read today even those that didn’t vote for Yun Zi are pleased with the name. Somehow Bai Yun, Gao Gao & their latest cub have made a lot more panda fans & the world a better place for a few minutes
November 17th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Moderator , did you show up in the video ?….I liked the sign for the Pandaholics that showed up for the naming ceremony….I also liked how active Yun Zi was for his physical exam, almost makes you wonder if he knew he was the excitement today….For those of the Pandaholics that didn’t figure out to click on the video feed to see todays excitement the video is located on the SDZ site :
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/videos/?bcpid=4552241001&bclid=1631259758
Yun Zi we all really love you and your helpers/keepers at the SDZ plus the Meercats for their great Video work , as well as all the Pandaholics that have sent get well wishes to Lynn….My wife is thrilled about his name although it was her 2nd. choice….Her nurse told me she had an ear to ear grin when she heard the voicemail I left her with the name while she was having a medical procedure done today while the name was being announced….We now hope she will finally be released from the Hospital and be able to coordinate her SoCal Doctor’s appointments with the most important part of the trip a visit to see YZ and all of you all at the SDZ……
Moderator’s note: The main moderator is seated to the right of the sign in the video. The back-up moderator didn’t make it on camera (for which she is grateful), but takes credit for making the sign and is glad you liked it!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I’m so sad that I couldn’t be there! But then again, I do live in Washington.I glanced at the clock right at 11:00, during English. I felt so excited, and I couldn’t wait to get home! I am so happy with Yun Zi’s name! I can’t wait to watch the video of the ceremony! Thank you moderators for your patience!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
It wasn’t my choice but now that I have said it out loud a few times IT FITS and I really like it! He is such a precious baby. I hope to get to San Diego to see him but alas, I don’t think that will happen sooo Panda Cam it is and I am most grateful for it. Thankyou so very much for all the hard work that you all do to keep us in touch with this joyous occasion.
November 17th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
We have been reading the book Little Panda about Hua Mei. When I went online to check the Panda cam to share with the children in my class, I found that the second day of our weeklong study was going to be the day Bai Yun’s baby got his Chinese name! How excited my class was to watch the videos of his exams, listen to him yelp at his vaccination and bark when they examined him. They wanted to see these over and over. I shared with them Hua Mei’s life since the book was written. The class has enjoyed the many things they have learned about Pandas. We love the name!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Happy Name Day, Son of Cloud! Thanks to everyone who described the ceremony. We also voted for Yun Zi. So is anyone going to tell us if that is the name the keepers and panda staff favored “hands down”?
November 17th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I love the name Yun Zi (and love its owner even more!!). Not only does this name honour our amazing Bai Yun, it’s a wonderful description of our little man as well. He is as sweet, pure and fluffy as a cloud~
The name is also very poetic in Chinese – it’s beautiful!
For those of you who are curious on how to pronounce Yun Zi – go to the exam/naming ceremony video and listen to how Dr. Ron Swazigood says it. He is bang on!
Congratulations on your new name little Yun Zi!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
The video of the exam had me laughing all the way through, and I loved the way he waved at the end, just like big sister Zhennie did a couple of times. The ceremony looked lovely.
Now–the pronunciation as I heard it in the video is “Yoon Zuh” which sounds wrong at first, but it kind of ends with the same sound as Mei Sheng and Zhen Zhen, so it fits right in. And I think El Cinco de Bai-O adorable Mr. Napping Bear will forgive us if we call him Yoon Zee (rhymes with cutie).
Yun Zi, we love you and your beautiful mommy and all of your wonderful family.
xoxo,
Auntie Frances
November 17th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
I am still having trouble figuring out how to pronounce his name. The speaker on the video sounds like he is saying Yun Zuh, someone else said Yuuuuun Jha, and I keep calling him Yun Zeeeee! Help, please! I need to hear the keepers say his name, as they will have it right. I have been so excited all day long just thinking he is finally named! What a milestone!
November 17th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
ITS ON THE NEW!!!!! HE IS ON THE NEWS!!!!! CONGRATS SDZ!!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
Moderator: Now that Yun Zi is 100 days old, how about creating a Panda Cub Paw Print Impression, 100 days – Limited Editions, and put them on auction? I know, I would love to have one, but of course, depending on the bid! This is the closest we will probably get to him.
Moderator’s note: Anything like this that is practiced solely to generate revenue from having giant pandas as part of our collection is in violation of our agreement with USFW and the Chinese government.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
I am very happy our cubby has his name (even the one I voted for this time), but I think I will secretly call him little Dr. McAwesomesauce
Oh, and SParks #222, don’t fret too much. All these little bears seem to just grow into their names. I wasn’t too happy about Zhen Zhen, but now I can’t imagine calling her anything else.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Awesome video! Thanks for showing the ‘panda fan sign’!
Are there going to be any 8 x 11 pics (like the poster in the video) of his name for sale? If so, where can I buy one, through the online store? I would like to purchase one. Thanks!
November 17th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
lol… Cool! Even through i voted for little dragon.. I think yun zi is a great name!
in chinese, yun zi can also means ‘little cloud’ .. Very cute name for the baby boy
November 17th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
I was busy today but had to stop a minute to check out what name our little boy got. I was happy to see it was Yun Zi Son of Cloud that was the name I voted for. I’ve been lucky all the names for the pandas we were able to vote on I have voted for the winner. I have already adopt him so he’s part of my family now too. LOL And I’m sure he will be a part of many families. I’m bet Bai couldn’t be happier with her son name.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
#222…De gustibus non est disputandum…..this means there is no disputing about tastes…everyone’s is different, and no taste is the only one or correct one.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Can’t wait to see him. Thank you San Diego Zoo for a beautiful boy!
November 17th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Hurray, baby Yun Zi. I am so happy, this is the name I was hoping for and I’m so glad you got it. Perfect. It gave me chills when I first learned what it meant. I wish I would of thought of it when we got to submit names. I couldn’t wait all day wondering what it was going to be. I kept checking the website, and finally told myself, I will find out soon enough. My hugs and kisses go out to your precious face, Yun Zi. I love you more than you will ever know.
November 17th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
My response to “222″. Yes, he is an extraordinary bear, but in my opinion, Yun Zi is an appropriate name for him. Bai Yun may or may not have more babies, so it is a good thing that we know of him as her “son of cloud”. Like with Su Lin and Zhen Zhen, they don’t even know they are sisters, but now with his name, we will always know he is her son.
November 17th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Congrats SDZ! Yun Zi is a fitting name for Bai’s 2nd son. One which I voted for as well. The name he will carry for the rest of his life will always be symbolic of his mother Bai. Which is why when voting I carefully analyzed my choice. It is a fitting name for her 2nd son! A name you should be proud for him to carry with him and a name that will represent all that SDZ has accomplished in the survival of the Giant Panda! Your Bai is a fine mother and her cubs have charmed the world. Hua Mei is a symbol of your efforts.
Thank you for all that you do for the Giant Pandas. You have enriched my knowledge of the Giant Pandas through your posts. For that I thank you for every bit of information you provide! Bravo on all you do! You deserve a standing ovation!
November 17th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
#117 Kay – nice to see another panda fan from Alberta on the blogs. Welcome!!
I want to thank all of the bloggers – your posts are so sincere and so joyful I can literally feel the excitement that today’s celebration has generated (especially from those of you who shared, in great detail, how the ceremony went at the Hunte Auditorium.) I am so happy for Yun Zi – what a thrilling day he has had! And Bai, every time I looked in on the cam, was so mellow today – like she knew it was a truly special day for our panda prince and her, of course. We even got a peek at Zhen and Su also (thanks, Meerkats!). I am so looking forward to watching the videos – could be a long night, but so what?
November 17th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Thank you Yadira and everyone for the wonderful post about today’s events. Even though I live here in San Diego, I had to work (end of year push), so I couldn’t make it to the ceremony. Yun Zi is a wonderful name (although I had hoped the San Diego name would have been chosen to honor all of the hard work the San Diego Zoo has done for the Panda procreation)
Kisses to Bai Yun (X BY) kisses to Yun Zi (X YZ)
B<)
November 17th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
What panda fans will do: A friend from Los Angeles went to San Diego for the ceremony–she texted Yun Zi’s name to me as soon as it was announced (I’m in Phoenix). Thanks, LA!
November 17th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
To Debi #240.
You are absolutely correct in what you heard. It rhymes with DUH!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I’m proud to have been able to take part in naming the newest panda. I have been a long standing supporter of the Zoological Society of San Diego, and feel it to be an honor to take part in this event. I am proud of my association of the zoo (and Wild Animal Park). You do great things for the world of animals. A perfect five stars!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Yun Zi: you are not just fitting to share a part of your name with your mother… but as the Chinese Horoscope reflects that you are born in the Year of the Ox… a second indication of your “robustness”..
November 17th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
If I was that cute, I’d have more chicks than Brad Pitt!
November 18th, 2009 at 12:06 am
I just got home…remembr I said I would purchase the hammock if my trip was successful..
Well my trip was a 2 parter. You might say that th first part was ok, but the second was a blessing and very successful but wasn’t anything expected.
I came h0me from Vegas and spent 4 days in pain with a very swolen leg…drs in Vegas said I did nothave a blood clot….Fri morning after returning home Thursday night I went to my doctor and within several hours I was admitted to the hospital and came home Tuesday night.
I was feeling very blessed and wanted to share the giving with you since we are a family the hammock woukd be from all of us…..
Sadly the hammock was already donated> (sniff, sniff)…but there will be another gift…I think it’s neat like AZ has….and won’twe hace fun watching mom and Yun Zi??? It would be so neat to put a face on a name and someday maybe being able to directly with each other.
Thanks my panda family…I am glad to be here….grateful, blessed and sucessfull!!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 12:30 am
#223 Christie in San Diego. How awful that your fibromyalgia chose the naming day of all days to be a nuisance. I hope you feel better soon. I (probably along with many others) have one of fibro’s cousins, IBS and know how horrible it is when your day out gets ruined. Hopefully you managed to find a virtual seat.
It really is lovely to be able to call Little One by his proper name. It actually does suit him right down to the ground. I wish I could have been there, but will probably visit next year sometime, even though I hate 12 hour plus flights, eeeuugh!!
November 18th, 2009 at 12:45 am
#168 Liana, thank you for the wonderful description of the ceremony. I am soooo jealous (but in a nice way).
#178 Bobbie Wood, how lovely to read one of your ‘famous’ zoo visit descriptions. I enjoyed every word and it brought back memories. Glad the sun bears are still playing. What about those lazy hyenas? And is the peacock still up in that tree? Every day, in my mind, I go round the zoo and every day I miss it more.
November 18th, 2009 at 2:38 am
How fitting the name and that was my vote. How fortunate we all are to be able to take part in this ceremony at the SDZ. The wonderful bears are lucky to be so well cared for by the outstanding staff. Congratulations again to Bai and Gao for producing yet another wonderful cub. Well done!!!! May you have a long and peaceful life Yun Zi.
November 18th, 2009 at 2:52 am
congratulation baby boy. so Yun Zi is your name?very nice and a great tribute to your mama Bai Yun. so son of cloud make you mama proud hihihihi
November 18th, 2009 at 3:45 am
I am happy about the cub´s name! Thank you panda team for your wonderful work! I am wondering if Yun Zi was also your favorite among the five names? Can you, please tell us now or is it still a secret?
November 18th, 2009 at 4:14 am
Congrats to you all Yun Zi is a fine name for him,I voted for that name, so very pleased it was picked, loved the sign well done for that, and thank you for the video. as allways thanks for all you do for the Pandas.
November 18th, 2009 at 4:38 am
Many thanks to the panda staff that sorted through all of those names and chose five excellent candidates. I am happy to say that the best name won. What a tribute to our beloved Bai Yun and a great name for the chubbie cubby.
November 18th, 2009 at 5:17 am
Hi YunZi (云子), we love you~~~
November 18th, 2009 at 5:31 am
Just got done watching Bai Yun on her back with Yun Zi balancing on her paws like a ball……To quote a line modified from old “F Troop” TV show “IT IS BAI YUN !”(BALLOON) LOL…..I only hope that I can show Lynn the daily antics when I visit her or hopefully pick her up from the Medical Center in Ithaca,NY….Again thank You Moderator and others for your kind words as Lynn gets much enjoyment and a relief from her constant pain hearing the comments of you and other well wishing “PANDAHOLICS”,after being confined to a Hospital bed since last December due to complications with her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease…..Hopefully we will be able to meet you all finally if she is cleared to travel to see her SoCal Doctors and more importantly the SDZ before Lin Lin gets sent to China….Any word on when Lin Lin might be joining her Step Sister and Brother in China ?
November 18th, 2009 at 5:43 am
Hurray!! That’s the name I chose, too, though I didn’t send in my vote. Now I have to get used to calling him Yun Zi, instead of His Royal Cuteness. I am sure he wil grow into his chosen name quite nicely.
November 18th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Ohhhhhhhhhhhh Im so HAPPY for the Sandeigo Zoo you guys are so honored and privileged to be apart of the Panda developement.I want to say thank you for allowing me and others to view all this Pandamonium with you.
I did vote for the name Yun Zi, the name suits him great. Have a wonderful day and Happy Hollidays to all the staff at SD zoo & fellow panda fans
November 18th, 2009 at 6:59 am
Well Yun Zi was my second choice of name. Now we have to get used to saying the name correctly. I agree though that it is a perfect name. While I had another preference I still felt that this name was one that would be perfect as a tribute to Bai Yun. She was long overdue for this recognition.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:10 am
Yun Zi is such a great name for our little guy. I consulted a Chinese friend when making my selection, and when she realized that his mother’s name is Bai Yun, she immediately said that Yun Zi was the best choice. (Of course all of the names were great.) Now that he has a name, will his photo join the rest of our pandas on the main page?
Thanks to everyone at the San Diego Zoo for all that they do.
Moderator’s note: Yun Zi’s photo and bio were added to the Meet the Pandas page yesterday.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:12 am
thank you, Bai Yun for another beautiful gift to the world…..what a wonderful mother…i first fell in love with Zhen-Zhen, now i have Yun Zi….what joy!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 7:13 am
hee hee – so little Yun Zi is a “full figured” panda
really, he is so adorable and seems to enjoy his weekly exam – so curious and loves to show off for the vets! it must be like a big adventure every week to be pulled out and prodded and palpated and measured and such. i love when he raises a paw and makes a little squealing sound – truly irresistable! i would give anything to “palpate” the little Cloud
November 18th, 2009 at 7:23 am
Yun Zi we love you and your mother. I am so happy you will carry on the name with son of cloud. Some day you will sire a new cloud possibly. Hope I can watch and enjoy your child as much as I have enjoyed watching you grow.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:25 am
I KNOW.. Our little baby has a wonderful fitting name.. however… based on PandaNUTS and our love for the little fellow… Can we still call him…. Dr Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce every so often? That name as well fit so well! Even if we shortened it to DFM… Maybe we would all know WHOM we are referring to…. I know Moderator… I made you hungry again… Sorry! Really I am.. But the Doctor is in! And now that he has his official name… and tubby… cubby… cubster… Sir cuteness… and all the other wonderful names we have given to our baby… seem to fall away… Dr Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce LIVES ON!!!
Rock on Doctor!!! He is so mobile this morning I just love watching him move all around moving the stuff mommy has put in his way! He will have his full tude on in about a month or so.. then we all better watch out! X-man has NOTHING on our Doctor!!!
Who is with me? Dr Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Fabulous…Yun Zi was my vote and it is perfect…love watching the staff, they look so proud as if Yun Zi was their own child and I suppose the cubs are in a way…thank you to the moderator and the camera crew for their work as well.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:36 am
Perfect! Perfect! Perfect! Couldn’t have had a better choice.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:38 am
I so happy about his name, i chose this name also, i think his mom deserves this. He is so cute, i will be glad when he starts walking, he sure is trying! I’m guessing they will be moved somewhere larger when he walks. It will be nice to see mom and cub together walking around, cubs are so cute than. Thanks for your information on the cub.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:42 am
perfect name! congratulations san diego zoo the name really suits him
November 18th, 2009 at 7:48 am
Had a great time at the Zoo yesterday. Thrilled to be part of the Ceremony and thrilled to meet fellow Fans and the Moderators ande some of the Keepers. I got some really great pictures, I will work out how to put them onto a site where I can share them.
The picture gift is GORGEOUS. Thanks for letting us be part of it.
I sat right in front of the red sign and was very careful not to sit right where the Virtual Seats were saved!!!
Moderator’s note: It was fun to chat with you, Susan!

Well said! Majority vote wins no matter what our individual opinions might be! His name is Yun Zi no matter what!
Love the little guy!
November 18th, 2009 at 8:25 am
ditto to all the posts above. Just what I hoped for and voted for. What fun!
Phyllis thank you for your warm wishes.

November 18th, 2009 at 8:40 am
“YUN ZI” is a wonderful name. When he goes to China in a few years, they will all know he is the son of Cloud. It’s a wonderful tribute to his great mom “BAI YUN”.
November 18th, 2009 at 8:40 am
Did Yun Zi have any more teeth at yesterday’s exam?
Yadira responds: Yes, an upper tooth has emerged for a grand of three teeth!
November 18th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Loved reading all the posts, we are truly a dedicated bunch of Panda Fans!! How lucky for those of you that were able to be there for the big event yesterday… I especially enjoyed reading your accounts…
My Husband called me this morning, he is a truck driver and was on the road, he said (“honey did you know your panda got his name yesterday?, he heard it on the news in Revelstoke, British Columbia. Our little guy is one famous Panda!!) I’m like DUH????? I knew 30 minutes after it happened.. ha ha, but I thought it was sweet that he mentioned it
Have a great day everyone, and big Hugz to Bai Yun and Yun Zi… virtual ones of course!!
November 18th, 2009 at 8:54 am
Moderator,
Can I purchase one of the keepsake pictures that was given out to everyone at the ceremony? I would have loved to been there, but I am all the way on the other side of the country.
I’m willing to buy one if they are for sale. Thanks!
Moderator’s note: I’ll check on it.
November 18th, 2009 at 9:09 am
His Royal Cuteness Yun Zi, a good name. It’s so cool to watch the faces of those examining him, their faces light up like Christmas trees.
November 18th, 2009 at 9:48 am
Thanks, Moderator for checking on it for me. I’m willing to buy one!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Guess who was in our local newspaper AGAIN today? His royal cuteness, Yu Zi, of course. I also saw him on the national news this morning. Baby Boy, you are quite famous.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Congratulations Yun Zi and Bai! My Mom and I are so happy about the name as we also voted for it!
Moderator, just in case you’re tallying how many panda fanatics would buy one of those adorable pictures, I’d definitely be one of them! I may buy several, if possible, as my cousins in Canada have become panda fans as well and voted.
Thanks for all the hard work and time you put into “talking” with us!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Wow! 290 blogs, 289 positive and happy about our cubs name. I guess other people can see it. What a great bunch of panda fans.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:13 am
I laughed out loud when I watched the video of the 12th exam, especially when the vet said he’s a “very robust cub, and full-figured.” Thanks for the video of the exam and the naming ceremony clip.
Those of you who made it to the ceremony looked marvelous out there!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:17 am
#288 & #290 Elizabeth & Moderator
I would love to buy one, also!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Thank you San Diego Zoo for a very nice day yesterday. Congratulations to Yun Zu….I can wait to see Bai and Yun (get it….) on exhibit in the next couple of months.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:26 am
#113 Becky, #162 Jeslyn, #168 Liana, #178 Bobbie Wood, #183 SAN Di, #227 Diana, #281 Susan – thank you all for sharing the Ceremony with all us ‘virtual’ viewers, both in words and in pictures! It truly makes us feel like we were part of the experience!! The keepsake photo was lovely ~ I’m sure there are a lot of us willing to purchase one, Moderator!
SDZ, thank you for the wonderful Exam/Naming Ceremony video! Also, thank you for the opportunity to adopt Yun Zi. I’m a proud virtual mom to this celebrated cub, and I have lots of videos and screen images to prove it! LOL!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:37 am
#282 Susan in S. Diego – thank you for the slide show! I’ve watched it and the video on the panda cam page over and over. Thank you so much for sharing with those of us “virtual” attendees!
Checked in on little Yun Zi. He seems oblivious to all that is going on around his Royal Cuteness. Little does he know of all the people around the world who hold him so dear. And his beloved Mama. I think it is so, so appropriate that Bai Yun has been honored with her newest cubs name.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:43 am
How could little Yun Zi get any cuter??? The newest video is adorable because he looks so carefully at his keepers. (I noticed that the keepers were sneaking in a little cuddling, too!) The best part was at the end of his exam when he seemed to be waving good-bye to the people. Too darling.
To everyone on the panda team, I hope that you don’t get tired of hearing how much we appreciate your efforts and the opportunity you’re giving us to watch the development of this adorable animal.
November 18th, 2009 at 10:47 am
#290 – I would like to buy several pictures, if available. Too precious to pass out on…
November 18th, 2009 at 10:55 am
Thanks to everyone who attended for posting your versions of the events and even pictures (#282!). I was hoping to attend and meet the moderators and fellow bloggers. Alas, I was home sick with a sick child. We enjoyed the video together, however.
#222 – I am 0 for 3 on voting so far, but it does not deter me! It is so fabulous and generous for the San Diego Zoo and the Chinese to allow all of us to participate in the naming process. Yun Zi is a nice tribute to an amazing mother bear and is lovely name in its own right. I was only concerned about pronunciation. Dr. Swaisgood’s pronunciation on the video is very helpful and is not as difficult as I imagined. As others have said, the bears seem to grow into their names. Just wait.
#237 – I also wonder if someone is willing to tell us whether or not Yun Zi was the SDZ Staff favorite.
Moderator’s note: I asked two of the keepers this morning and was told that Xiong Wei (extraordinary bear) was their first choice, but they truly loved all five names and are very happy with Yun Zi. Now they are working on some nicknames for the little guy. The deputy moderator suggests “Yunior.”
November 18th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Moderator,
I just wanted to express my gratitude for the beautiful thank you card that I received from the Wish list program. I want to send my thanks to whoever wrote those wonderful cards. I have never been to San Diego zoo but I see it is a first class facility. I also have a question regarding one of the toys I selected for Yu Zi. What is a Baby Panda Egg Toy? Thank you.
Moderator’s note: I’ll forward the compliment and question to our Wish List team. Thank you for purchasing a toy for Yun Zi!
November 18th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Thanks for the video of Yun Zi’s exam and the naming ceremony. Loved seeing the beautifully dressed, talented musicians. Dr. Robbins’ description of Yun Zi as a robust, full-figured, endearing, appealing, irresistible manly man was wonderful and I couldn’t agree more. It always warms my heart to see the obvious joy that Yun Zi brings to those who work with him and to see that they’re a little starstruck to be in his presence. Thanks for sharing him!
November 18th, 2009 at 11:17 am
To the moderators, keepers, and fans, what a wonderful day yesterday was. I got very emotional about our chubby bears name, which I absolutely love. He is such a joy to watch as are all the Panda’s. I just want to express my deepest gratiude to all of you for the wonderful pics, and videos and all that you do to keep us informed. Thank you very very much from the bottom of my heart. Debbie
November 18th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Why is the den door closed???
can anyone tell who is who at the panda fans forever ???
Moderator’s note: I can
November 18th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Would love to buy one of the keepsake photos also. Would be a great way to raise money for things on the Panda Wish List. Hugs to our adorable “full figured” young man!
November 18th, 2009 at 11:30 am
Congratulations Yun Zi on a terrific name. Congratulations Bai Yun on a terrific cub and namesake. Both of you look like floating clouds when you are sleeping soundly side by side at 4 AM. I hope that as Yun Zi grows up in the presence of his mother over the next 15 months that the similarity of their names does not become confusing for him. I voted for this name primarily because I think it is a fitting tribute to his mother, and flows easily on my American English speaking tongue. I think it will do him well for his lifetime both in US and in China.
He really is a blissful extraordinary eternally blessed little dragon bear from San Diego!
November 18th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Tina #276, I’m with you! I voted for both Yin Zi and Fu Sheng, but I will help you keep Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce ALIVE!
As nicknames, “Yunior” is clever, and the “Z-man” reminds us of Xi Lan, but Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce has got to be the best nickname for any panda, ever!
November 18th, 2009 at 11:45 am
I love the nickname “Yunior” – that’s the best so far.
Count me in for a couple of the keepsake pictures!!
November 18th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
#302 Carole A from Canada
The toy is a big brown egg-shaped toy that Yun Zi can push around and play with. Keepers can also put treats inside for him to try to get out.
November 18th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
dear moderator,
at times from a rear angle he looks as though he is actually sitting up alone. And once he was face down sleeping with his rear legs spread as though he had been sitting and fell straight forward. Does he sit alone yet? Also has he been successful at getting out of the nest alone yet? I have witnessed his attempts, but not any successed.
Thanks so much. I have been thoroughly enjoying this
November 18th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Yun Zi was not my first choice either, but I am thrilled with it as a tribute to Bai. All the nicknames are also cute, and Z-man and Yunior made me smile.
It was certainly above and beyond that the SDZ staff sent personalized thank yous in response to shower donations. Mine must have fallen out on the long trip across country, as the envelope was empty when it arrived. However, that isn’t nearly as important as seeing the full house in Panda Canyon and how well Yun Zi is growing. Right now it looks as if Bai is having a Motherly chat with Yun Zi. A few minutes ago he reminded me of the Little Engine that Could: “I think I can, I think I can…” His rear legs just weren’t completely cooperating!
Now Bai went out and left him sitting in the door way. He’s trying so hard – I want to give his rear a push. He almost made it, and then he fell back into the den.
Dennis and Lynn – Ithaca is a beautiful area. My son went to college there. However, being out of the hospital would certainly be much more beautiful! My best wishes for a speedy discharge and better days ahead.
Christie – Fibromyalgia is truly painful, and frustrating that you usually don’t know if any given day will be good or bad. A close family member as well as a neighbor are both dealing the same situation. The dramatic weather changes in the East don’t help, either. Hopefully you will have many good days for visiting Panda Canyon.
Tami – Sorry to hear about your leg. Thanks for your willingness to share some of your resources with our panda.
Susan in S. Diego – Loved the pictures of the ceremony – especially the sign at my virtual seat. So much appreciation for your sharing.
To all who supplied details to us (the virtual fans), thank you soooooo much.
Yadira, Thank you, also for the wonderful description.
I hope we can purchase the souvenir picture given out yesterday. After all, we WERE there – we even had a sign in our Virtual Seat Section.
Moderator’s note: We’ll try to send you another thank you, as it certainly was well deserved.
November 18th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
I didn’s need a late night movie to end the day last night. Mommie and an active Yun Zi , furnieshed a full hour of enjoyment. I never have seen such total entertainment between the two. It wais over and under, on top, side to side, swipe (gentle), and roll around for a long time. I was fascinated as usual. I took it that the three of us could not get in a sleep mode, Iwas so fascinated with the wrestling match. I wish everyone could have witnessed that…It was still going on when I got sleepy. I hope I can catch that again sometime. so cute for our little fur ball and his adorable mother.
November 18th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Yoonzah! Yoonzah! Yoonzah! Say it three times fast! Yun Zi’s name sounds like a cheer!
November 18th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Thank you Susan #282 for the lovely photos. and I am delighted that Yunior has made “fuller figure” fashionable!!! Thanks to all the SDZ keepers, Moderators and all other Panda Bloggers you make my day. First thing in the morning and last thing before I go to bed I have to check Bai and Yunior and all of the blogs. Keep up the good work all of you. Only 26 days until I see Wang Wang and Funi at Adelaide Zoo – just can’t wait
November 18th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I’m not seeing the Yun Zi under the “Meet the Pandas”……am I missing something?
Moderator’s note: His entry is right below Zhen Zhen’s.
November 18th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Moderator: I’ll let you know!
I’ll put in a request to go on my 13th birthday, which already has 2 major events. (My ears pierced and my first ever hair cut!) For the nickname: Shouldn’t we call him Zi? Or just Z. Or zzzzzzz for his napping. He could be Zipper if he likes to race around when he is older. (Is that how you pronounce Zi? Like tea?) P. Wong, where are you? Panda cub needs attention! ( I have an article of him that I’ll post in my journal!)
November 18th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Oops – never mind, I found it.
I was originally looking for it in the “Meet the Pandas” section to the right of the pandacam.

I like “Yunior”!! Good job deputy moderator. Add my name to the list for a keepsake picture if it becomes possible. After all, there were a whole bunch of us “virtual” attendees as well as the “real” ones.
November 18th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
I loved in the latest exam video — right after she noted that Yun Zi was “very robust” that she said he would be a very “manly man”. I bet he will be a very manly man, just like his papa Gao Gao. How adorable! Congrats again on a very lovely naming ceremony — and again — I just love the name. It was the name that struck a chord with me immediately (lump in my throat, tear in my eye) and such a sweet tribute to mama Bai. Yun Zi is going to grow up to be a wonderful papa bear someday!
November 18th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Another exam – more cuddling from the staff (I see all the snuggles)

The naming ceremony video was impressive.
And count me in for keepsake photo – I think all those in the virtual seats should be able to buy one
#282 – Susan, in S. Diego – thanks for sharing your photos – wish I could have been there

November 18th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I’m looking back when the 5 names came out and everyone was extremely un balanced. I too was caught off guard on the names and I said that what ever name is choosen will be the perfect name for our prince….seeeeee
Now all the comments are positive and exciting….it fits him perfectly our Yun Zi like it was always meant to be…
We are a unique group…soo much loving and excitement. And now more has been added…how can anyone resist this???
I would like to create a day at the zoo where we get to just gaze and watch Bai and Yun… before the crowds come in…meeting each other…”friends forever”
wouldn’t that be neat???
Love you all….Tami

Was the thank you notes only send out to people who made a purchase during the baby shower. As I made my purchase a couple days before the shower thinking it would be very busy that day with everyone at the shower. I made a purchase for our new boy Yun Zi aka Z-Man and another one for every member of the panda family.
Moderator’s note: Thank you, Pam T. I’ll forward your question to our Wish List team
November 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Another thanks to Susan for the photos? Anyone else? And wow, Moderators, we’re now at over 300 comments! Are you getting overtime bamboo?
I think nicknames will change as he grows. Yunior is a hoot! Right now, I privately (well, not so private any more) call him Snuggles. That won’t do as he becomes a robust teen and then a Manly Man!
I voted for Extraordinary Bear. Someone on the blog said he or she didn’t like the name because it was Pooh-like. Oddly, that tipped me towards it. But when I went to vote, my mouse kept moving back and forth between that and Yun Zi. I love Bai Yun every bit as much as I am in heart-throb with her son. I am soooo happy that name will honor her his whole life.
Panda mothering is amazing! If anyone hasn’t seen the YouTube farewell tribute to Fu Long, give it a go. Very touching, and the second photo is the funniest photo of his mother holding the (then) little newt-like creature in her mouth.
Here’s the URL for the Fu Long video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-S3jPdhb4HA
Count me in for the ceremony photo if possible. I know there was a virtual one left on my virtual seat. I just forgot it there and would be delighted to pay for the hocus-pocus required to change it from virtual to paper!
Moderator’s note: What a wonderful video of Fu Long’s first two years! Where’s my hankie?
November 18th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Yun Zi: Mommie we’re a like!
Bai Yun: Well yes, what exactly do you mean?
Yun Zi: Your last name is my first name….Yun!
Bai Yun:I know, all the humans wanted you to have mommies’ name or daddys” name
or both….the humans were getting really stressed…you’re a pretty famous
cub. All my babies are special…but you have brought the world together
here.
Yun Zi: I are famous panda????
Bai Yun: Yes you are. They love your name…son of cloud…
Yun Zi: I luv that mommie. Where’s my toys?
Bai Yun:They are in a safe place until your’e big enough and strong enough…..
Soon son, soon…
Yun Zi: Oh tah…I am Yun Zi son of cloud…I am bigger than before…I get bigger
and play…I love the humans….I am Yun Zi, I am Yun Zi, I am Yun Zi …etc,etc..

I’m thrilled others are interested in purchasing the keepsake memento given out yesterday. I was reluctant to ask, for I didn’t want to sound to greedy. Char (#306) suggested the cost could be applied to the panda care/supplies. That is a wonderful thought, Char.
Moderator, if the keepsake picture does come available and there is a limited supply. I would suggest a limit to purchase the pictures, in order for everyone to have one. I’m concerned people will purchase in bulk and there will not be enough to go around…Just a suggestion.
The video is adorable! I’m looking forward to the next 4-6 weeks, when Yun Zi becomes more mobile…fun times ahead for Mama and cub. Thanks for all the information today.
Moderator’s note: All of these suggestions have been pass along to those who make these decisions.
November 18th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I did not vote for Yun Zi but I LOVE it. While I am watching the pandacam I often think about what a wonderful mother Bai Yun is. The right name won…
November 18th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
My post crashed, so I am trying again.
I drove over 200 miles today over five Oregon mountain passes (but the sun was shining) to get home to MY COMPUTER where I could finally access the naming ceremony/exam.
My name won, in past my name has not won. Love it!
My own name is now “Tears in Eyes.” Isn’t this cub the most adorable baby on EARTH? Well, his siblings were, too, but he is now Number ONE!
Bai Yun, you are the Earth’s most wonderful Mother. We could ALL learn something from you, lady! What a sweetheart you are!
November 18th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Moderator, thank you for forwarding on the suggestions. I hope the “powers that be” will approve. I, along with others I’m certain, do not wish for the zoo to incur any cost on their end for undertaking such a task as mailing out Yun Zi’s keepsake picture. I look forward to hearing the news when decided….
Page #325. That is a beautiful tribute to Fu Long. *sniff*. Thanks for sharing.

Susan #282 … thank you for your beautiful pictures … loved them!!! I was the lady in the white hat and red sweatshirt with the panda on it. Were you sitting next to me??? I was so excited to find out the baby’s name that I never asked your name. Sorry.
Also: I voted for Extraordinary Bear but still love our little guy’s name. I seem to be calling him, Yoonzie, for some reason…. not intentionally. I guess he won’t mind.
Moderator’s note: Just don’t call him late for bamboo!
November 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
#332, Yes Becky, that was me!! It WAS nice to meet you!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Hello–I guess I have the correct pronouciation of Yun Zi. It would be nice to see the pronouciation witten.
Moderator’s note: There seems to be many ways to pronounce it: Yoon Zuh, Yoon Zee, Yoon Juh, Yoon Zah.
November 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Tami #326: I LOVE The conversation
Especially the last line

It’s only 80 miles one way and freeway all the way; I can’t wait to drive down again soon to see the other gorgeous animals!
Susan UK # 261: I didn’t see or hear the Peacocks yesterday…I pretty much was a panda bear groupie
The good news is I finally got up the nerve to drive to the SDZ all by myself; therefore, I know I can do the trip more often
To all: I am moved with joy each time I read about how much you all Love the name Yun Zi. I also am tickled with the nickname ‘Yunior’
Susan #282: Thank you so much for posting access to your photos from yesterday!
To Sand Di: It was a treat to meet you and you kindness of showing the photo of you holding the little (?) panda while on your trip to China made the day even more special.
To Moderator: What a fine moment to get to meet you as well!!! Alas, I realized I had left out ‘meeting’ in my blog from yesterday.
Moderator’s note: I wasn’t offended, Bobbie. There was a lot going on that morning!
November 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
# 145 Jola, Austria on “Panda Fans Forever” blog. I really love your video, and obviously so does the moderator, see comment to # 325. After reading your comment I watch the video again and noticed that you gave credit to the artist who composed the music especially for the video. Please congratulate Michael Sawinsky for me; the music goes perfectly with your video. I watch the video again today as it was the day that Fu Long was scheduled for his journey to the country of his ancestors. I hope that the information from # 171 Mary from Brooklyn, on “Panda Fans Forever” blog, is correct and that after his quarantine, Fu Long will be integrated in the 2-year old cohort and have plenty of playmates. He will be able to educate them on the advantage of spending 2 years with his mommy… I hope that will start a revolution in the kindergarten and will lead to a change of rules in China which will leave the panda mothers to raise their cubs until the natural weaning time. Wouldn’t that be great!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I like Yunior! It has much more of a ring to it than Gao Jr, which I still want to call him since he looks like a mini of his dad.
November 18th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Congratulations to SDZ on new name “Yun Zi” for Cubbie #5. Also thanks to those who shared their stories and photos of the event. Not sure if I’ll get to visit SDZ any time soon, so I’ll remain virtual fly on the wall at present.
#317, Pandafan#2 – Dr. Ron Swaisgood did an admirable job of pronouncing Yun Zi in SDZ video clip. Though if you’re still trying to figure it out, just think of saying “zit” and drop your voice right before the “t.”
November 18th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!what a name this is so cool my teachers sister work with the pandas and we got an up close !!!!!!!!!!
November 18th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Great name! Bai Yun is the mother of the year, once again, and she deserves this honorable part of her new cubs name ….. great job SDZ team ….
November 19th, 2009 at 3:10 am
Congratulations Yun Zi!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So adorable!
November 19th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Shepard Smith had a story on this last night on Fox News. I just about burned dinner I was so excited to see the little butter-ball on national TV. Our Yun Zi is a rock star!!
November 19th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Yun Zi also appeared on his Naming Day on Greta Van Susteran’s “On the Record” and in a cartoon on the Op/Ed page of the San Diego Union Tribune.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Hi Dear Moderator, I thought u had said earlier in one of your blogs that some names were cut out, because the Chinese do not use either side of the mother and fathers name in naming a child, so why did
they do opposite and incorpate the name instead of being orginal why not be unique and let it have his own name like using Little Dragon?
Moderator’s note: I didn’t say that!
November 19th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Yippie! Congratulations, our baby bear has a name and a perfect name it is.
November 20th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
OMG – little Yunior is walking!! Go Yun Zi, Go!!!! (okay, so mama just lent him a hand, but he is going to be quite the handful in another week or so!)
November 21st, 2009 at 8:31 am

November 21st, 2009 at 5:39 pm
Yes I am posting about this problem yet again just like other people have, can’t understand why you Zoo employees don’t get it when doing Videos of the Cub’s exams that we do not LIVE IN EUROPE we want the weight in LBS. NOT KILOGRAMS don’t know why this is such a problem we do not use the metric system in the U.S.
November 21st, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Little Cloud, what happens if you get any CUTER!! It can’t be!!!!!! Any more irresistible and I’m afraid to see how all your caregivers are going to fuss over holding and touching you! I think even if you had to bite me on the arms, I’d have to give you a big, fat squeeze! Maybe even a nip on the nose.
You do have a beautiful, magical name now, in honor of your momma. She shows you boundaries, and love and now how to walk and play. No one could have a better momma. You deserve each other so much. Thank you for giving me joy and calmness.
November 22nd, 2009 at 12:13 am
Moderator: Is it too late for me to get on the list for a souvenir picture of “yunior”?
Moderator’s note: I don’t yet have a final answer on the availability of the souvenir photo.
November 22nd, 2009 at 6:47 am
I scanned through the posts, but didn’t see if anyone gave the correct prononciation of the name!
I love this little bear and have watched him at least once a day (most of the times lots more than that). It’s been so fun and wonderful to watch him grow!
Can anyone post how to say the name?
Thanks to all of you at the San Diego Zoo for making this baby available for the world to see!
November 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I voted for the name that means ” Eternally Blessed”. But Yun Zi was also good. I LOVE YOU YUN ZI!!!!!!!!!!!!
1 trillion hugs & kisses to you, Yun Zi!!!!
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I’ve just finished watching the latest exam, and I thought it was so adorable because it looked like Yum Zi was waving to the staff that had just examined him. I never get tired of looking at the Panda Cam or all the videos from when he was born until now. Best viewing ever.
Thanks to the SDZ staff for all their work in keeping all us of updated on this wonderful cub and the whole panda family.
November 22nd, 2009 at 7:23 pm
I’ve had some questions about our little cutie, Yun Zi & his Mom. I’ve seen that people ask when will the cub be ready to go out into the public. Often the response is Bai Yun will know when it’s time. My question is, How does she know it’s time? What does she do to prepare the Yun Zi to come out to the world of the General Public. How is Bai Yun when the handlers have to take him for an exam? Also does Bai Yun still recognize her cubs when she sees them? Is closer to some handlers then others? These are some things I’ve been wondering since I have fallen in love with these bears.
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun is starting to take Yun Zi to new places, including the currently-closed-to-the-public “classroom” exhibit. He’s still not too steady on his feet and he must be able to navigate that exhibit fairly well before we allow guests to see him. Bai Yun seems comfortable during her cub’s exams but keeps an ear out for any call of distress.
November 23rd, 2009 at 6:31 am
I didn’t know that I had a chance to vote for a name because I was too busy watching the Panda Cam. I couldn’t stop watching Bai Yun take such great care of her baby. I thought it was so awesome to watch. Although I didn’t vote, I think that Yun Zi is a perfect name for him and that’s the one I would have voted for. I love it. Thank you everyone at the San Diego Zoo for sharing this awesome experience with all of us.
November 23rd, 2009 at 8:24 am

Because of its accuracy, the metric system is used throughout the United States by science and medical communities. The San Diego Zoo is a well-respected science and conservation organization and as such it uses the metric system to accurately evaluate weights, lengths, and other metrics of the animals in its care.
November 25th, 2009 at 7:31 am
Yes I know you are a well- respected conservation organization as We have been members and donors to the Zoological society of San Diego for over 10 years but it still doesn’t mean you can’t give the weight and length in pounds and inches as most people aren’t sitting there with conversion tables to see how much the cub weighs!
Moderator’s note: Is there some place on our Web site where the conversion has not been made?
November 26th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I thought his name was Yún Zĭ…
Will we be seeing Yún Zĭ stuffed animals at Toys Я Us?
December 3rd, 2009 at 6:02 am
After the possible names for Yun Zi were narrowed down to the five choices, an earlier blog indicated that the panda keepers had a particular name they favored for the cub. I am just curious what that name was. Was it Yun Zi, or a different name?
Moderator’s note: It was Xiong Wei.
December 15th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Yun Fi just a perfect name for the little cutie.
January 19th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
An awesome name! Yun Zi or “Son of Cloud” is the perfect name for the liitle panda cub!
