Panda Fans Forever

Posted at 3:52 pm November 14, 2009 by admin

panda_exam11_2The excitement is mounting here at the San Diego Zoo as we await our panda cub’s naming day. The naming ceremony will be held at the Zoo on Tuesday, November 17, at 11 a.m. in our Hunte Amphitheater, located just north of the Giant Panda Research Station and across from Big Cat Trail. Special guests will be introduced and remarks from the co-head of the Zoo’s Panda Team and our board president will be made before the name is at last revealed. Please remember: the cub will not be at the ceremony, but I’m sure he’ll enjoy the video clip of the proceedings that will be made available on our Web site later that day!

We thought it would be fun for readers of our panda blog section to meet each other at the ceremony, so we’ve set aside a special seating area just for you! Look for a sign that says “Panda Fans Forever” about five rows up in the center of the amphitheater. Here’s a chance to don your favorite panda earrings, pins, sweatshirt, T-shirt, or socks—you’ll be in grand company. As a bonus (at least we hope so!), your blog moderators will be there, too! We’d love to meet some of the many panda fans we’ve been hearing from. You really are a special and caring group of people, and it’s always fun to put a face to a name. We hope you can come!

If I lived there, I would be coming! Virginia is pretty far from you. I send warm wishes to those who are able to come and I will be thinking about you all on Nov 17. Wish I could be there.

Moderator’s note: We’ll save a virtual seat for you, Marysue!

  2. Panda Annie says:

I wish I could come soo bad! I live in California but not near San Deigo… oh well :-(

    Moderator’s note: Bummer!

  3. JEAN says:

I wish I could be there!!!! I was at the Zoo in 1999 when Hua Mei was still waiting to be born. She is a special panda to me as I was visitng California that year because my brother was in the hospital in San Diego. I went to the Zoo because I knew it would probably be the only time I would ever be able to visit. I will be waiting anxiously to here what the little cub will be called. He is special too because I am able to watch him grow. Thank you for all the information and videos and e-mails available. You who will be there are very lucky and will be envied from here in Virginia. I have been able to see our pandas here in Virginia in person and on the Internet. Hua Mei is now in China and is
    the mother six pandas!!!!!!

Moderator’s note: Hua Mei had another cub in July, so now she’s the mother of seven ;-)

  4. Savanna says:

I can’t wait to see what his name will be! I’m baking a cake for him on Tuesday and I’ll decorate it with his name on the frosting when it’s announced. Love ya cubbie! Happy 101 days of being heathly and beautiful.

  5. KellyinFLA says:

I wish I could come! It’s a long way from Florida! I hope my name wins (yun xi/son of cloud is my favorite). Have fun to all who are lucky enough to go! :)

Moderator’s note: We’ll add more seating for our virtual spectators, Kelly!

  6. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide, Australia says:

Oh yes – it would be wonderful to be there on Tuesday for Chubby Cubbies big day – but it is a long way from Adelaide to San Diego – I wish you all a wonderful day and best of luck to all Panda Fans who can make it – will be watching though with great interest

  7. Marysue says:

    Thank you! :)

  8. Tina says:

Thank You to all of you that work with the Pandas and the other animals. You are all amazing with all that you have sahred with us. If I lived closer I would be there. Im hoping that one of these days I will be able to see all the animals at your facility.
Enjoy the day its just as special as all of you!

  9. Laura from Il. says:

If I could come, I’d be there…but have the date on my calander, almost like a baby getting baptised, am excited to find out his name. But I’m sure I’ll be calling him “mellow fellow” still. He is so laid back. Loved his “bark” on the last video. Oh to be in your shoes. Love him and mama bear. Hugs and kisses to both!

  10. Bernice says:

I’m in the Yukon so I’ll be patiently waiting for the video.

  11. Kalpana says:

I wish I could come to see my little cubbie. However, Seattle is not at driving distance. I will definitely come to see the little guy when he is on display, hopefully in January. Until, lots of love and hugs to the little guy. He is so very cute.

  12. Nicole V says:

I wish I could be there, too! I was in San Diego this past Dec/Jan (saw Zhen Zhen and Bai Yun together) and again this past July. Darn it.. won’t be able to be there this week! Please save a virtual seat for me too, dear Moderator? :-) Will be thinking about y’all from DC (with the Tian Tian/Mei Xiang/Tai Shan family!).

Moderator’s note: You bet we will!

  13. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

I wish I could afford to come right now but cannot. I will be at home watching the panda cam and waiting for the news of what the little one’s name will be. Thank you to you all for the great work you do with the Panda’s and all the animals at the zoo. I hope the name that is picked is Yun Zi (son of a cloud).

  14. pandafan-north says:

I knew I was going to miss this grand occasion – I was there in October and enjoyed seeing the Zoomer and Su Lin again. I will be tuning in from work – it’s my lunch hour and I’ve got it on my calendar. I’m really looking forward to the video – it will be so special!

Thanks to the keepers, the narrators, the moderator, and all who play their part in giving us panda fans the pleasure of your virtual company and such vivid images of the precious pandas each and every day!

  15. Shirley S.C. says:

I can’t be there either, it’s a long way from South Carolina, but, my thoughts will be with you.

  16. Marie says:

I chose Son of Cloud for his name, hope that will be his name.

  17. Dennis & Lynn Carney says:

My wife is still undergoing emergency treatment for her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease and related complications in Ithaca,NY…. We hope to visit as soon as she is released as 11 monthes in a Hospital Bed have taken their toll and her SoCal Doctor’s are hoping she will be able to travel when released as they want to do a follow up and possible procedure and yes they hope she will be able to visit all of you at SDZ in a wheelchair to see the Panda’s as they feel that will be perfect therapy for her as all she does is talk about how nice and helpfull you have been during previous visits and how much she loves the SDZ Panda’s and Staff …..

  18. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

isn’t it funny how your sister or best friend will name their baby HORACE and you secretly cringe while outwardly telling them what a lovely name that is? and then after you get to know the baby you can’t imagine him with any other name? i’m sure it’s going to be the same for the little big guy too!! i can’t wait but i will. ( :

  19. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

ps………….i apologize to all of the wonderful HORACE’S out there.

  20. Barbara in Midwest says:

Thanks so much for thinking of us — we are indeed a passionate group. How I wish I could be there, but I am stuck here in the middle of the country. I did see Hua Mei & Bai in 2000 — Hua Mei was about 9 months old and was draped over the stump, sound asleep. How I treasure these pandas! And I missed the shower because I was at work! Please save a virtual seat for me . . .
Thank you to the keepers, moderator, & panda team for treasuring these creatures also. We know you do.

  21. Susan, in S. Diego says:

I will be there!! So excited, they’re tenting my place of work, so I don’t have to work on Tuesday!! See you there!!

Moderator’s note: Excellent, Susan!! I look forward to meeting you.

  22. Liana in San Diego says:

Are you kidding? Miss this? I’ll not only be there but with bells on my toes! Both grandsons want to come with me, but the oldest is in first grade, and I’ve gotten strict instructions from him to take down notes – notes! can you imagine??!!- so he can share all the details with his class the next day. Since Mr Chubbs’ birth in August, part of our fun time when I babysit is to watch the panda cam and see the little chubbikins grow by leaps and bounds. I’m expecting the younger one will not be happy that the cub isn’t being displayed yet, because he asks about him every time we go to the zoo (usually every few weeks).

Still, it will be a marvelous ceremony no matter what, and knowing the way our little boy is growing, it won’t be long now before he is out and about on display for us all to see.

I don’t have a video cam, but I do have a camera, and I’ll take oodles of pictures for all you panda fans that can’t come! And how about if I blow a little kiss in Mr. Chubbs’ general direction from all of us?

Moderator’s note: I’m glad you can come, Liana!

  23. Georgie says:

Thank you for the kind invitation to the Naming Party.
I will be there in thought due to our living on the East Coast in Pennsylvania.
My daughter is a Volunteer at The Animal Park and she introduced me to San Diego’s beautiful Pandas.
    (via Internet)
The Pandas have given me such joy, specially following the growth of Bai’s Baby. What a charmer!
I have learned so much about the beautiful animals, thanks to your your knowledgeable Moderators.
You answer our repetitive questions with nary a complaint!
Many thanks, wonderful San Diego Zoo !

  24. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Phooey. I want to go and I had wanted my boyfriend to eat lunch at the zoo’s Albert restaurant……but he said “no”……here I am in town and I suppose I need to put the boyfriend first…….but my heart will be with you all.
I wish I hadn’t learned about the offer to the Panda Fans…….now I feel worse about not going! I will ask him again….not giiving up yet……and we are members so we could get in free without waiting in the lines…….which he hates.

Moderator’s note: Try again, Jeslyn. Maybe you can treat him to lunch at our new Sabertooth Grill in Elephant Odyssey–it has a wonderfully diverse selection of entrees!

  25. Panda Fan says:

Please add me to the list of people who can’t come–and would like a virtual seat! It’s hard to believe that our little panda man is already old enough for a name…I can hardly wait until Tuesday to find out what it is (but whatever it is, I’ll always be one of his devoted fans!)! I was lucky enough to grow up in San Diego, and went to the San Diego Zoo often as a child/teenager; so being able to see the Zoo (via the cams) brings back lots of great memories! Thank you, Zoo folks, for that opportunity!!

  26. Mary Lange says:

I will be there in spirit. I visited the famous zoo for the first time in June and I just marveled at the panda exhibit and the entire zoo. Sure wish I could be there again but sorry to say funds aren’t there. Greetings to everyone from sunny Fl.

  27. Joanne says:

When we read the news of what is happening in this world, the sadness of what is happening with families, and financial problems, and what is happening to our children, the divisions and hate that is going on with different nations and faiths, it is a comfort to my heart to watch our pandas. There is a sweetnessw and unity that is going on with the “panda” family. I am very thankful for panda cam, and the calmness and unity it brings to so many people. If I could do life over, I would be a vet who worked with animals. Thank you for making these pandas available to us thru the cam.

  28. Chari Mercier says:

Hope my name choice is the one that won the votes—Xiao Long! Won’t be in San Diego for this name ceremony, but I’ll try to get in on the virtual seating at 2pm EST Fla. time! So, save me a seat, ok? We are pandafans forever because we do love all of the pandas here in the USA and the world!
Was just on the pandacam, and little cubbie is napping in the den!
Well, gonna go check the pandacam again, and also look in on some more great comments! You might see a conversation from me, too! Be back later on!
    Chari Mercier :)
    St. Pete, FL

  29. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

What a wonderful thing to do for all the cam fans – many have shared so much of their personal lives in addition to our love of pandas. Wish I could be there – please save me a virtual seat :) :)

  30. Carolyn C says:

I live in Central Calif. Wish I could be there, but can’t make it. I just returned from China and was thrilled to see both Hua Mei and her new cub and Mei Sheng(who was up in a tree and managed not to fall). The first thing I checked when I got back was the panda cam and was back in time to vote on the name. Can’t wait. Will be visiting the following week.

  31. kimberly says:

Like the other Virginians I would love to be there in person, but I will have to settle for a video :-( **ZZ & the little chubbie cubbie hold a special place in my heart cause they were both born within 2 months of my own kiddos 1st bdays. My daughter and I watched ZZ grow from birth to now. Now my son and I get to watch the newest cubbie grow up together too!*

  32. Margaret says:

For those of you who are able to attend, the Moderator(s) identity will finally be revealed. Have a marvelous time at the Cub Naming Ceremony. All of us virtual visitors will enjoy the videos later.

Whatever the cub’s name is will fit him well as he grows I am certain. I looked today for the 5 names to refresh my memory after reading of Kathy and Angie’s personal favorites, but alas, they have been removed from the Panda page, and I can’t locate any references to them any more. Perhaps that is intentional on the part of the web team to increase the suspense and surprise when the “official” name is announced on Tuesday??

Moderator’s note: Here are the names panda fans could vote for:

Fú Shèng (fu sheng): blissful San Diego

Xiǎo Lóng (siao long): little dragon

Xióng Wěi (syong wei): extraordinary bear

Yǒng Xiǎng (yong siang): eternally blessed

Yún Zǐ (yun zih): son of cloud

  33. Jen Boatwright says:

My students and I are so excited. I wanted to take them on a field trip to the zoo for the ceremony, but the school can’t afford it this year. :( At least we can keep track of our panda “class mates” online. Thank you so much for allowing us virtual visits! :)

Moderator’s note: We’ll save a virtual row for your class!

  34. Maureen says:

Each school day my third grade and I visit your website to see the cub and Bai Yun. We voted on the names within our classroom and sent in the one which got the most votes. We will certainly be watching on Tuesday to see and hear what he will be called. All of us- students, student teacher and teacher- would just love to hold and/or pet him just once, but a field trip from Alabama would be far too expensive! Thank you for your blogs, videos, and the panda cam. God bless all of you and your pandas.

Moderator’s note: You’ll have to tell us which name your class chose, Maureen!

  35. Lilarose in Oregon says:

First, please ask the Panda Fans Forever if they will allow their photos to be taken….maybe someone can post them somewhere on the internet. Individual pics or a group pic, and who is who!

Second, Jeslyn in San Diego. Tell your lovin’ boyfriend that you will be going to the San Diego Zoo for the naming ceremony and he is sure invited to accompany you! And if he says “no,” tell him how much you will miss him while you are at the Zoo. I say this because you have a life, too! When I was a newlywed, my husband told me I could not attend my tenth class reunion nor could I attend my grandmother’s funeral. I have regretted taking those orders for almost forty years.

  36. Kay Davies says:

Oh, I’d love to be there in a panda T-shirt. I’ll be watching on the computer, and will have my husband answer the phone and take care of the dog so I won’t be interrupted. I remember voting for Su Lin’s name and being so thrilled when my choice “won”!! Whatever name our Chubby Cubby gets, he will be a prize panda in all our hearts.

Moderator’s note: Please know that the ceremony won’t be shown live, as we don’t have a Panda Cam camera at the amphitheater. But we’ll have a video clip of the highlights later that day, as soon as our videographer can dash back to her studio and prepare it! You can still wear your panda T-shirt, though ;-)

  37. Britney says:

Oh i can’t go to the panda naming cermony. too bad

  38. Mary G of MA says:

Can’t get much further away than I am – unless someone is from Nepal. But will be there in spirit and occupying my virtual seat with great joy. Feels like we’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.

Question: will a panda-loving delegate from China be present at the ceremony? That would be wonderful!

Special thanks to you, moderator, for all you have done and continue to do for all of us.

Moderator’s note: The deputy consul general from the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles will be introduced at the ceremony.

  39. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#18 – # liz ‘panda stalker’ smith – funny how you mentioned names – when we adopted our 7 year old son 35 years ago his legal name was Freddie Gene (yep he was born in southern Va) We really hated the name Freddie so decided to change his name to Fredrick Eugene & call him Rick. But for some reason he was always a Freddie (Rick just didn’t fit) & finally when he got older is now Fred. So we all have our favorite names for our pandas – and do wonder as we tend abbreviate – for example Tai Shan means peaceful mountain (Haha) but most of us call him Tai – what does that mean. And Mei Lan (ZA) is called Lani. Most of us call momma Bai Yun just Bai & pappa Gao – I think Su LIn is one of the few pandas called by her name :)

  40. Mary in SF says:

I will be virtually sitting in my virtual seat!

SD’s not *so* very far from SF….but my students would miss me — or maybe not ;-)

  41. Suzanne (the other one) says:

What a great idea… panda fans all together (just watch out for that ‘radical’ group that is planning to scoop up the cub and smoosh…. er hug him! They may just use this ceremony as a distraction to ‘do the deed’!)

And then, to ice the cake by tempting us all with a possible opportunity to meet the very special moderator(s)! And here, I’ve been assuming that all this work has been done by ONE dedicated moderator…. now to learn there might be more? All wonderful, to say the least.

Sigh, I’ll have to settle for one of the virtual seats as well, but will be in excellent, panda loving company!

Perhaps the video could include a super quick pan of the crowd, panda fans forever section, AND moderators (with moderator type badges!)!

Moderator’s note: That’s right, the planned “visit” to “palpate” the cub. How could I forget? My back-up moderator and I will indeed be wearing special badges for the occasion!

  42. Zozzie Golden says:

My day isn’t complete without a “panda break”. I have to check all the panda cams so I can visit with my favorite ‘furball’s. I want to thank the panda zoo staff for keeping us all informed and up to date. The blogs have been so educational and a delight to read.

  43. John and Sarah says:

We have been watching Bai and baby since August 4,2009 and are just amazed at the care and attention you show( as if that was ever in question). You people are remarkable in what you do. Congratulations to you all……….just wish we could take the little fella home with us….We would take Mum too but she might not like our Newfoundland dog much…..thanks for everything you do….John and Sarah, New Brunswick,Canada

  44. John and Sarah says:

by the way…..give a big hug to them for us

    Moderator’s note: Virtually, of course!

  45. Melodie says:

OOOOOoooohhhhh…I sure wish I could be there!! I’m on the other side of the country. I was born in San Diego, does that count? ;) That is one of my goals, to go to San Diego to your wonderful zoo, and see our newly named cub. He sure is a “handsome bear!” Some day…..

Thank you for all these wonderful updates. I will picture myself in the Panda Fan Forever section this Tuesday. I’ll be there in spirit! Look for me! :)

  46. joan said says:

save a virtual seat for me, too.
i’ll be there in heart and spirit, but in reality i’ll be right here watching the ceremony via my monitor.
so grand to be part of this international panda family, so much love from all for the lil guy.
here’s to Yun Zi, in honor of his beautiful mother.
    hugs to the lil guy,
    joan
    painted post, n.y.

  47. Pam T. says:

How great sure wish I live in the area if I did nothing would keep me away but Ohio is just to far. But I be there in my mind and heart. With Panda Fans all over the world it makes it hard for all of us to get together but one thing for sure we’re all drawn together by those beautiful pandas. Can’t wait to hear his name.

Thank you to the Moderator’s and Zoo Panda staff for thinking of all of us.

    Much Love to all
    Pam

  48. Dianne in Texas says:

Bummer! to be so far away from something so important and exciting! Thank you for thinking about all of us pandaholics and reserving a special place. Those of us who can’t be there in person will be there in spirit. And I will be there in person in January, and would love to meet some of the keepers and moderators. Perhaps all the blog fans could wear a cap with their blog name on it, and you could post a picture of them?

    Moderator’s note: That’s a fun idea!

  49. kat Wilson says:

Little Cloud: I want you to know I will be there in spirit while they are officially naming you. I will be at, what us
humans call work. It’s not that it’s more fun than going to your naming ceremony, it’s just that there is another thing going on at my “work” called layoffs, and a special trip to “SDZ” is not something work looks at too keenly right now.

You will be on my mind, though, on Tuesday, as you always are. I will be definitely thinking of you and just know you will be feeling all the love your fans bestow on you, especially on Tuesday.

Congratulations, little cloud, may you have a most special life filled with love overflowing and the best times
any little panda could wish for.

    one of your adoring fans

  50. Dianne in Texas says:

    P. S. Love the picture above, of the Bruiser-Man, with that come-hither look in his eyes.

  51. Lid says:

I’m So J !!! I live in hawaii !! if I live near there I would be there…I miss the virtual shower..I’ll miss the naming ceremony! arghhhh give my aloha to the lil chubby Gao Jr !! thanks !

  52. Lid says:

oh just letting you know I have Su Lin’s military ID necklace when I last visited there…I’m hoping to visit ZZ and Gao Jr.. soon ..oh yeah have fun Panda Fan !! next time Mods maybe we will do this again in advance…so we can make a travel arrangements hehe

  53. Page says:

Oh, what fun! I hope lots of you will go to the ceremony and report. On the ceremony and meeting each other. Eye witnesses always pick up different details. And how cool to meet The Moderator! Like Dorothy getting to see what the wizard looks like — only this time, the hidden “speaker” won’t be a fake scary person! I would love to meet you all!

I will be at Rockland Community College in NY, teaching a Photoshop class. Maybe I can give an intense in-class assignment and then sneak over to an empty computer to watch.

Jeslyn, The Boyfriend may be fabulous and he may be The One; but if he is, he’ll be around a long time. Hope you can do this special thing — for those of us who can’t go. My husband may have some nutty flaws, but he is very supportive when something rare is happening that I want to see. It’s a good part of our life.

Liana — goody! Special press coverage for US! Thank you! I’m a new member of this club — Chubster is my first — and I am, of course, in love. I have been reading all the past blog posting from the other cubs, and I think I am getting to know them, too. I have been to the Zoo and to the Wild Animal Park. We saw the pandas, but I didn’t see them through “knowing” eyes.

I look forward to posts from some of you who are getting to be part of my daily reading. I think P Wong’s slightly surreal “conversations” are brilliant.

  54. Widget says:

Oh poo…I would love to be there at the naming ceremony with my little “Widget” name tag on my blouse. However, I am stuck in Pa. with Georgie #23. Figuratively, not literally. I hope all my friends who live in and around San Diego take this opportunity to meet all the other pandaholics. I personally would love to meet the moderator of this blog, and Lisa Bryant, and all the bloggers who’s name I see almost everyday, but will never meet in real life. Don’t know who all will be there but what a wonderful day that would be. If you pandaholics that live in that area, don’t make the effort and give up this opportunity to meet everyone, I will personally write to Panda Claws this Christmas and have him leave coal in all your stockings!! Oh..to live near the zoo!

  55. Marilyn says:

Wow, thanks for the invite! I’m within driving distance (Los Angeles) but I have to work. :(

  56. Jeanne says:

Can you please write a note to my boss that this is a mandatory meeting? And that it’s not allowed to take away 2 vacation days for the trip? I’ll be there in spirit!

Moderator’s note: I am having such fun moderating these comments tonight!

  57. Kathy Hacker says:

I have to teach on Tuesday, but my 4th and 5th graders will be watching at 11. I’ll lock my door so I don’t get caught by the principal. Hee Hee!!!!!
I hope his name is Son of Cloud – what a tribute to a great mother Panda.

  58. Tamara n Kristen says:

Tamara is very jealous of Kristen who is right in San Diego with baby p. But Kristen has school that day! Woe is us!

  59. Page says:

The Lin Ping video is a hoot, and he has a black spot on his tail, like the Chubster. Are they related?

  60. Beth says:

Argh! I wish I could be there! It is so exiting that chubby cubby is getting his official name! I think everyone who peeks in on him feels like the have a special little connection, so save me a virtual seat too please! :-)

  61. Ginny says:

Wish I could be there but New Jersey is just a little too far away. Can’t wait to see the video.

  62. Ilene from Chicago says:

Will be there in spirit and can’t wait to see what you named the little guy. Came to visit when Tai Shan was little. Ran to the exhibit as soon as the zoo opened. Did not expect to have such emotions (my husband watched the tears going down my face). I was so overwhelmed. We stayed as long as we could and came back again later. Enjoy watching the new little guy grow up. Your staff is terrific!

  63. faye says:

Oh, too bad that I cannot be there. It would be fun to meet some of you there. Last time ( Oct 25) when I was there I was kind of hoping to ’spot’ someone who is on this blog. I saw a woman who I thought might be one of us here but I was too shy to approach.
My vote was also ‘Sun of Cloud’. However they all seems pretty good. It doesn’t matter which one will be your name, lovely little panda, please know that you’re adored and always loved.

Thank you so much for the special invite for this group. I really appreciate what you are doing.

  64. Widget says:

Suzanne#41…My Cohorts in the Pandanapping Caper wouldn’t dream of disrupting such an important time as the naming ceremony with trying to do away with the cub during the event. Plus the fact that I’m sure the press is going to be there, so a lady in a wheelchair screaming “I got him, I got him”, while we all try to pile into my car in the Handicaped spot, would be quite conspicuous! I can just see the picture in the paper the Press took at the Ceremony, and written under it…”Pandaholics all over the country convened today for the Naming Ceremony..except for the 6-7 ladies now sitting in our wonderful jail. Welcome to San Diego Pandaholics!!”. We’ll do it another day! ;-)

  65. tanda says:

I think SDZ is the greatest and the panda team is even greater than that. I am about 900 miles north of SD so won’t make it down but my heart will be there! I love little cubbie and is he getting cute!!! Moderater does the cubbie act like he recognizes the panda team when they examine him or is he to young. I want to thank all of the team for being so kind to all of us when we ask so many questions.

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.

  66. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

wow!! to #39 maureen, we also have an adopted son who came already named. TYREE. we secretly hated it. he was 4 when we adopted him and i asked after a bit if we could call him ‘ty’. NO was his 4 year old answer. we never looked back and now he just couldn’t be named anything but. thanks for sharing your story too. our kids are so special.

  67. Doris says:

I am. I love those animals. I would so say that i am a total panda fan… my favorite~!!!!!!!!!!

  68. Claudia says:

Bark Bark I am HERE, I am cool, I am a big boy, I am Baby Gao Gao Bai Bai ! I want a name, a good name. Hello Panda Fans, Claudia says she can hardly wait for baby Chubbie Cubbie to have a real name.

  69. Christie in San Diego says:

I haven’t been to the Zoo in quite a long time, I’m embarrassed to say, but will definitely be making a concerted effort to be there on Tuesday. I hope it won’t be too hot to wear my panda sweatshirt! I’d love to have a picture taken, either alone or in a group; my sister’s been bugging me for a new pic now that I’ve cut my long hair very short (the long hair is going to Locks of Love) and it’s now a brighter red than it has ever been before! I now need to try to locate my camera and make sure it is charged for the big day! I’m looking forward to meeting my fellow Pandamaniacs! See ya there!

Many thanks again to the moderator and the keepers and the vets — all the people at SDZ who do such a terrific job of taking care of our precious pandas. You are the greatest!

Moderator’s note: We’ll watch for you, Christie!

  70. Chari Mercier says:

Late nite reporting at 2:20am EST, Florida time! Was just taking a look at Pandas Live On, and they have 2 more videos of Yang Yang and Fu Long on the front page. Fu Long will be leaving Austria to go to Bifengxia, China, on November 18, 2009. A couple of his keepers will be going with him, and they will stay at Bifengxia for a few weeks to help him get transitioned to his new home. They said that they will miss Fu Long very badly when he leaves! :(
Also, PLO has a bamboo chart on how much money Atlanta Zoo is raising for their Give So They Stay campaign. There is a new total on the bamboo stalk—$211,000 has been donated so far! They are about halfway there to the $500,000 goal that they have set to keep Lun Lun and Yang Yang at AZ along with Xi Lan. Mei Lan is due to go to China sometime early 2010, but no firm day has been set yet. The fundraiser continues thru December 31, 2009.
Got on the SDZ pandacam, and Bai is in the den laying down with her son. Both are sleeping very soundly! Reminds me of my bedtime, so I need to get to bed, like real quick! Getting tired and yawning!
    Nite nite, you all!
    Chari Mercier :)

  71. Christine in Sydney Australia says:

Would love to be there but unfortunately it’s a long long way away. Thank heavens for the panda cam. I feel honoured that’s he’s receiving his name on my birthday. What a darling.

Moderator’s note: Have a great birthday, Christine!

  72. Kati (from Finland) says:

I needed that virtual seat too! Thanks for offering.

    Moderator’s note: You got it!

  73. Dawn (London) says:

Sadly being in the UK means i will not be able to visit, but i sure hope to one day, the staff do a wonderful job with the pandas and the other animals at the zoo
Hope you all have a wonderful day, looking forward to the photos and videos showing us the event…Now to hope that given the time difference they will be posted before my kids go to bed, they are all excited to know the cubs name and have each voted on their choice..I have been lucky enough to visit NZ and ZA, and after i get back to NZ to see my beloved Tians the next stop i will be planning is SDZ, so one day i will be there in person
Thank you to everyone involved in this wonderful event

  74. Lena says:

Best wishes to new panda cub and all panda team from Ukraine. I will waiting for ceremony video and hope visit zoo in the future. Special Thank you for Panda cam.

  75. Sally says:

Missouri is a bit too far but I am excited and will be watching. He is sooooooo cute.

  76. Beverley says:

I wish I could be there, but I live in Montreal, Quebec and am so far away, but hope one day to visit your wonderful zoo. I voted for “Son of Cloud”, so am anxiously awaiting Tuesday’s naming ceremony. Thanks for all information you give on pandas – I check in on the baby panda’s progress many times daily.

  77. Sheryl says:

I have been following the baby panda since he was born. I used to live in Washington DC where they had a panda baby born. Then I followed the birth of a panda at the Atlanta zoo. I am so interested in pandas and cannot wait to hear the name of this little boy. I live in upstate New York but I sure wish is was San Diego on Tuesday. Thank goodness for Pandacam!!!

  78. Connie in South Dakota says:

I chose Son of Cloud and hope that will be the name and I surely would be there if I lived close but I don’t. Thank you so much for all the wonderful updates on this little cutie pie. It seems as though he growing up too quickly but when you are older time seems to move much more quickly. The San Diego Zoo is the best and the staff rocks!!!!

  79. Becky of San Diego says:

I was born and raised in San Diego …. practically grew up at the zoo … dreamed of working there, but ended up at a nearby museum instead … brought my children there throughout their childhood … my “nest” is empty now so maybe I can treat myself to a day at the zoo … a stroll down memory lane?? I have been checking the panda cam about a dozen times each day … but the truth is … I love all the animals … well almost all … not too fond of the snakes …. I will try to get there for the big naming ceremony!!!

Moderator’s note: Please come, Becky. We’d love to meet you!

  80. marian (uk) says:

Oh how I wish i could be there,I followed the baby shower, that was very good, I dont blog often have trouble with my hands, but I watch every day, hope all goes well, thank you all as ever for all you do, hugs for all theese Bears, and I know i shouldt but extra hug for ZZ, love her to bits, will be waiting for video.

  81. Carolyn says:

what a great idea for those that can be at the ceremony to have a chance to get together. i go to the national zoo several times a year as that is the closest to me and its always so much fun to see tai and family and fellow panda lovers so this should be a lot of fun for those that are able to make it. enjoy and so happy for all of you that are able to be there in person. pandaholics are easy to recognize, we are the ones who spend hours and hours at the panda yards even if they are all just sleeping, and we do a lot of shouting and cheering when they aren’t.

  82. Mary from Brooklyn says:

Carolyn C. #30 — I’m green with envy that you saw Mei Sheng (who lives in a tree!), Hua Mei and my adopted cub daughter. Do you plan to post pictures of them on the web? Flickr, Facebook? I would love to see them.

Moderator — please save me a virtual seat. Thanks. I would love to be there Tuesday, but am saving up so that I can see El Cinco in the flesh later on. You are going to have so much fun. You’ve earned it.

Moderator’s note: Consider it saved, Mary!

  83. Sherie says:

Awww…I’m jealous, too! But I will be there in spirit just like all my virtual panda fan family and I’m sure those us who can attend will represent us all very well!!

#62 Ilene I know exactly what you mean! Tai and Su Lin were my first pandas four years ago and while I haven’t had the chance to go see Tai in D.C., I did get to see Su Lin September a year ago (along with Mama Bai and Zhennie!). We came out on Amtrak from Missouri to L.A. and while planning the trip, hubby asked me what I would like to do. I asked, “How far is San Diego and the zoo?” So, he planned a day just for me. As we got to S.D., I could barely stand the excitement and as we parked and got out of the car, I felt like I was 7 again running downstairs to see what Santa brought. I thought I would explode!! Got a great pic of Su Lin eating boo and put it in a precious frame with pandas dangling all around that I bought from the zoo store. What great memories!

  84. Diane K says:

I’ll be at work in my panda shirt since I live in Maine! Can’t wait for the video! :-)

  85. Dawn from MA says:

I am so excited about little cubby getting a name. I will be at work at the time of the naming but will find out later on. I am also so impressed that I received a handwritten thank you note for the Panda Baby shower gifts that I purchased. It brought tears of joy to my eyes to think that you all could be so thoughtful enough to send a “handwritten” note. We are all blessed by the good work you do. But most of all I feel that I am blessed by getting to know this baby Panda cub & her lovely Mom, Bai Yun. To think that just by accident I looked at a webcam one day & I was hooked.

Thanks again SDZ. Also I was wondering, does little cubby have a black spot on his back or is it the camera in the den? Love his tail black spot….what a distinctive mark.

Moderator’s note: None of those who have seen the cub firsthand have reported a black spot on his back. But that tail spot sure is cute, isn’t it?

  86. Maureen says:

The name Little Dragon won out over Extraordinary Bear in a tie breaker vote in my third grade homeroom. I hope it is Eternally Blessed.

Moderator’s note: A tie-breaker vote? Wow! Thanks for sharing.

  87. Deana says:

Bummer, I can’t be at the naming ceremony either, I live to far away. But I will be there in spirit like all other pandaholics. I also hope that my name is chosen. I just hope that SDZ website/pandacam doesn’t crash on naming day with all the entries that they will be getting after the naming ceremony. Gosh, what a wonderful day it will be. It will be great to be able to put a face with a name of the very patient moderators who have ben helping us so much. I will be parked in front of my computer waiting for the news/video/pictures patiently. Wouldn’t it be great if cubbie could get a small gift from the keepers after the ceremony? Like a little stuffed animal to snuggle with, or maybe a little ball to scoot around to strengthen his muscles? What a glorious day it will be!!!

  88. Cindy in East Lansing says:

First off, a HUGE thanks goes to whoever decided to have a section for blog fans. What a wonderful idea. Your staff truly is terrific. We love you all!

We’re so like a family, sharing each others’ stories, joys and sorrows, even get-well wishes. Like many fellow panda fans, I’ll be a virtual guest here at Michigan State with fellow Spartan Panda Fans, Lynn and Jeannie. I wish we could all be together to greet each other at our own Howdy Gate, but know we’ll all be there in spirit. Regardless of the name His Royal Cuteness is bestowed with, I can’t wait to give him a proper name.

Moderator’s note: You’re welcome, Cindy! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

  89. Telly26 says:

Grrr….one Tuesday too late. I was there last Tuesday. They were out of the black and white panda ear rings…but I bought the sox and a t-shirt! I’m hoping for Son of Cloud.
    : )

  90. Christine (UK) says:

Wish i could be there aswell, but the UK is just a bit too far to make the journey, but i will be there in spirit! So looking forward to hearing what little dumpling will finally be called. Also to seeing the video of the ceremony. Whatever name he is given will suit him and we all will enjoy calling him by his proper name instead of cubby etc lol.

  91. Phyllis says:

    Dear Panda Family,
I usually try to include the #’s attached to your names but I can’t this time because they come from all different blog pages, so please forgive me.

    Sue in Massachusetts,
Just let your husband “shake his head” at you. My husband thinks I’m a little strange too for being so much in love with these pandas, but I am!!!! Oh well :-)

    Meryl Lee,
I watched the video of cubbie # 5 being born, and I DEFINITELY heard a great deal of squealing coming out of the den once baby was born. He didn’t settle down until mommy Bai picked him up, cleaned him, and held him tight to her. Watch again.

    Liana in San Diego,
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do as you say and if at all possible, PLEASE give Bai Yun and our “little man” an EXTRA big kiss from Aunt Phyllis in NJ. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Consider me your new best friend! :-)

    Jeslyn,
I am not going to preach to you about how to run your life with your boyfriend, it is not my place to do so. But, maybe if you explain to him JUST HOW IMPORTANT this really is to you, he will let you have your way on this one. I hope so; I’d give anything to be able to attend!!.

    Dearest Moderator,
I am not quite sure what a “virtual seat” is but please save me one. I will have my daughter explain it to me when she gets home from work. In the meantime, it would REALLY mean a great deal to me to be part of this occasion, so PLEASE save me a “virtual” seat. I understand that there will not be a live pandacam going, but that you will have a video later in the day. You can be sure I will be watching that at well. I have some medical testing going on that will take all day Wednesday, and I intend to focus on the “happy thoughts” I’m sure I will get to see in the video on Tuesday. As usual, thank you to you and everyone else who works so hard at the SDZ. We pandaholics (and other animal lovers) love you for it and are eternally grateful. Our blessed animals could not be in better hands. Big, fat hugs to all of you; and special hugs and kisses to Gao Gao, Bai Yun, and soon-to-be-named “little man”.

Moderator’s note: We’ll have a virtual seat for you, Phyllis, meaning that those of us who are able to come and sit in the Panda Fans Forever section will also be thinking of those who’d like to be there but can’t.

  92. joellen says:

    Dear San Diego Zoo and Panda Care Takers….All the staff, and Pandas! ;
I live in Iowa City, and I will be excited to see the video later…..I wish I could be there…..Please give them hugs and kisses and I will send good energy and light to everyone. Will be there in thoughts and spirit!
    Sincerely, Joellen

  93. Liz says:

    Another great idea…thanks SDZ.

I can’t attend either, I’m clear across the other side of the country. I’m looking forward to watching the video. Can you ask the videographer to include the “Panda Fans Forever’ sign in the video montage for us humans and cubbie to see? ;-)

Have a wonderful time…..an exciting couple days ahead for all of us!

    Moderator’s note: I’ll ask her.

  94. Ruth from Austria says:

Unfortunately it is a bit far from Austria to San Diego. But I will certainly be sitting in my virtual seat, just watch out for me! I will be wearing a cute panda costume! I wish all of you a successful naming ceremony. I wonder what name will be chosen for His Royal Cuteness. Talking about cuteness, thank you so much for the lovely exam video and all your wonderful blogs. I have got the feeling that I cannot keep up with your many blogs anymore. Thank you everybody for all your inspiring info and blogs which are more than appreciated. So, 17th November will be a day of joy, but 18th November will be a tearful one for me knowing that “my” beloved Fu Long will have to depart for China. Today I read in a newspaper article that
Fu Long’s favourite keeper Eveline Dungl will accompany him to China. She claims that Fu Long is able to fend for his own now despite the fact that his mummy Yang Yang is still living with him. But I believe there were times when Fu Long and Yang Yang have not been together, infact Yang Yang went back to her husband Long Hui. Therefore, I can only hope that Fu Long will be alright and will not miss his mummy too much. I shall keep you posted what is happening. Bye for now and sob, sob, sob……

  95. Suzanne (the other one) says:

Widget #64 – good point about honoring the cub and not disrupting ‘His’ naming day! Very thoughtful (and, with all the cameras and filming, probably a wise decision!). Thanks for my morning LOL!

  96. Carolyn in MA says:

Keep a seat open for me as well though I’ll be warming it from Massachusetts. My husband and I look back fondly on the three years we lived down the road in Poway. SDZ was always the first stop for our many house guests : )

  97. Dianne in Texas says:

Reading all the comments from all the excited (and regretful) panda-lovers out there, brings a wild idea to my brain. Why could we not plan some type of “Pandaholics convention”, a plan to meet in San Diego (Panda Canyon, of course) at some point next year? Seriously! I think it would be a great opportunity for all of us to meet and greet each other. Wonder how many hundreds of us post on this blog? What does anyone else think about this? Moderator, how do you think the keepers and staff would feel about this?

    Moderator’s note: I think it’s a great idea! I’ll pass it along.

  98. Linda says:

I will be anxiously awaiting news of the pumpkin head’s “official” name while working on my computer here in MA. I never tire of watching the baby, though he does sometimes make me sleepy. Earlier today, he was curled up in the most delightful fluffball – he just looked like a little puddle of panda pudge. I wished that I were Bai Yun and could curl around and snuggle him and nap as well :D

Will the blog moderators be introduced during the ceremony, for those of us not able to attend? Maybe in addition to the “Meet the Pandas” page on the pandacam site, you can have a “Meet the Staff” page with the photos and brief bios or statements from all the folks whose hard work goes into keeping the pandas healthy and happy and keeping their admirers well-informed.

Moderator’s note: Oh no! We are not the stars by any means, but thank you for your kind words for our staff.

  99. jennifer lynn says:

Wish I could be there sounds like fun. I have enjoyed watching that cutie grow and reading all
the updates. I am in Tenn so not been out that way, I am able to get to Atlanta zoo about
once a month to see the pandas there. Everyone that gets to attend wishing you a fantastic
time. I wil be watching on the panda cam that day.

  100. Pat says:

I also wish we could be there, so since we can not, please know that my happy thoughts and warmest hello wishes will be there for all of you pandaholics. Also to all the pandaholics that can not be there. It will be a great day for all……………………..

  101. Jersey says:

How wonderful that you all will have a section for us pandaholics!
Thank you all so much for all you do.

I’m recovering from surgery in Oct, started chemo and will be back to work this week (all is well and I’m thankful for all the medical care and friends and family). So wish I could be there in person in the special seciton but will set my work computer’s Outlook calender for 2pm Eastern for a “meeting” with status of BUSY and watch for the baby’s name. So excited and happy for the SDZ pandas and community.

Moderator’s note: Glad to hear your recovery is going well and that you have made “time” for a special little guy’s big name day!

  102. Frances in NYC says:

If you can squeeze one more virtual seat in for me, I’d really appreciate it–and look forward to names and faces which I hope someone will be able to post.

And, of course, the NAME! Will it be posted for us when it is revealed even though the video won’t be posted until later? I agree with everyone who has said that cubmuffin will grow into his name.

And thanks, meerkats, for the lovely views of Miss ZZ today–my first cubbie and always my “baby girl”.

Moderator’s note: Yes, you won’t have to wait for the video. Our Web Team and Facebook and Twitter folk are all poised to alert the world as soon as the name is announced!

  103. celfy says:

I’ll be another virtual visitor! I live in the UK, so won’t be able to hop on a plane to be there (unless I leave now!) On the one trip I’ve been able to make to see the pandas, the exhibit was closed as Hua Mei decided to be born the day before I arrived at the zoo.

Still I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we’ll have pandas in the UK again one day. We were supposed to be getting them in Scotland this year but they haven’t arrived; I don’t know why.

  104. Lisa in Maine says:

#84 Diane in Maine, what part, maybe we can have lunch. I have some really nice pictures from our trip out there last March. Let me know.

  105. Bobbie Wood says:

Tuesday is going to be SOOOO MUCH FUN!!! I think all Panda Fans who will be at the ceremony, could put a name tag on themselves so that we can greet each other in between giggles and hugs and howdys :) To say nothing about cheering when we get to hear what Little Dude’s name is :) Cannot wait!!!!
    Dianne # 97: Great idea!!!

  106. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide, Australia says:

Good morning all pandaholics – not long now.

Dear moderator – forgot to ask last post – please save me a virtual seat. Austalia should have some one at the naming ceremony. Only 29 days until I see our Pandas in Adelaide

    Moderator’s note: Will do ;-)

  107. kat Wilson says:

the bottoms of his little paws, front and especially his little back ones tucked under his chubby little rump, are the cutest! and that little birth mark on the very tip of his little, sweet tail….right now he looks just like a human baby in his crib, on his back, squirming to roll over. Too bad we can’t hang a panda mobile up above for him to enjoy, while he’s stuck on his little back. squirm, squirm little tyke, yes we love you with all our might…oxo

  108. JJ says:

I can’t be at the ceremony on Tuesday, but believe me I’ll be there in spirt. Can hardly wait until later Tuesday afternoon when I get home to see what his name is. He’s so precious. I’ve noticed lately that he’s been very active while he sleeps. So cute to watch. I’m not getting any housework done just watching the darling Panda family.

  109. Phyllis says:

    Widget #64,
I agree, we should reschedule our plans and not take the risk of ruining our baby’s naming day in any way. Just please keep me posted with the updated plans, etc., please. :-) Hee Hee

    Chari Mercier #70
Nite Nite Sweetie. You sounded tired today. I pray you get very peaceful, restoritive sleep while the angels watch over you. Good night friend! :-)

    Christine in Sydney Australia #71
Happy Birthday girlfriend and I pray God blesses you with many, many more happy and healthy ones!!!!! :-)

    Marion UK #80
Don’t ever feel like you have to apologize or explain when you have the need to send a little extra love to someone. It is NEVER a bad time to send love.

    Dearest Moderator,
Thank you for explaining what a virtual seat meant and for assuring me that you would save me one. It means a great deal to me; more than you would imagine at this time. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being part of this wonderful, and at times wacky bunch. Hee Hee :-D

  110. Phyllis says:

    Dianne in Texas #97
I think it is a wonderful idea. I just hope that by the time it gets planned and such, my finances change, so that my husband and I would be able to attend. :-)

Ruth from Austria #94 and everyone who loves Fu Long

I am going to say a very special prayer for Fu Long that God watches over him and sends a special guardian angel with him to protect him and give him happy thoughts and memories. I will pray his angel calms his spirit and protects his gentle heart so that he will be so busy making new friends and learning new things, that he will not have time to miss his mom or other things from his past. I will pray that every once in a while he will find himself overcome with a quiet peacefulness that comes from pleasant memories from the past that he may not “remember” in the traditional way; but he can “feel” in a way that surpasses anything the mind can know. I will also pray for his mom, that she also will have feelings of peace knowing that her “little boy” is moving forward in the battle to help their beautiful species survive and thrive again.

  111. Lilarose in Oregon says:

I live on the southern Oregon coast and can’t travel to San Diego, but I hope to some day. Meanwhile I will wear my charm bracelet that has a special vintage Giant Panda charm on it! I always have my two floppy baby Giant Pandas in the room.

I will have to watch the video of the naming ceremony since I will be on the road during the naming hour. I am hoping for Son of Cloud like many others are.

Save me a virtual seat also.

    Moderator’s note: Indeed we will!

  112. Liana in San Diego says:

Jeslyn, not going into a huge feminist thing here, but it’s your life, sweetie. You start letting him “rule” you now, and that’s pretty much the end of your authentic self. If you want to go, just go, and he can find something else to do while you’re having fun. You’ll regret it if you don’t and you’ll be quietly mad at him forever!

And for the rest of you, be assured that I will take oodles of pics. I am not at all proficient at video the way DoxieMom is, but I can take pictures and then post them on my Facebook page for you all. Or maybe you all have a better suggestion?

Moderator, would the zoo’s Facebook site be a place to post personal pics of the naming ceremony?

And may I suggest to all of us Pandaholics going on Tuesday – how about we all wear black and white in honor of our chublet? I don’t own any black or white hats, or I’d suggest that too!

Getting so excited about it and even my furry family senses something is in the air – poor dears, they think it’s about them, when it really is about the wee one that has stolen my heart!

Moderator’s note: I believe the Zoo’s Facebook page is just for us to post photos on. But we can talk at the ceremony about getting some photos “out there” for our virtual attendees to see.

  113. Sue says:

How I would love to be there but I’m afraid England is just too far away!! I follow the lives of your Pandas and am always so excited when a new cub is due. I always marvel at how quickly they seem to grow! I can’t wait to find out our new cub’s name, send my best wishes for a wonderful ceremony and thankyou for providing the technology for me to feel a part of the Panda centre

  114. Page says:

Wow. What a busy day for the Moderator! Imagine if all 17,000-plus name-voters wrote in at once! I feel like I’m waiting for Christmas.

  115. Peg from Western Ma says:

I wish I could be there but I am from Massachusetts. I will wait patiently to hear his name. Enjoy the day.

  116. Bonnie says:

I am so sad I have to miss it but might be coming down in March!

  117. pandafan-north says:

#97 Diane – I am 200% in favor of your wonderful idea of a “Pandaholics Convention”. It will be very unique in that none of us will be coming for rehab – this is one addiction that we should never, ever try to cure!! In fact, we’re all going to encourage each other to continue our support for these wonderful creatures! We could have a theme – maybe a special fundraiser. It would raise the profile of the giant pandas all over the world!!

Moderator, thank you for promising everyone who can’t be there a “virtual seat” on Tuesday. The great thing about “virtual seats” is that you’ll always have enough for everyone. I’m so looking forward to November 17!!

  118. Judy- Vancouver, WA says:

I wish for you all, a happy day of naming ‘little guy’ – that is what I call him – nam myoho renge kyo, name of all :)

  119. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Thanks for all your comments on my boyfriend….and I didn’t know there is a new restaurant in the zoo….perhaps that might tempt him.
He is 91 yrs. old……so its hard to get him to try new restaurants as you can imagine…and so if he doesn’t want to go to the zoo….then I would have to give up my lunch date with him…..and at that age, who knows how many lunch dates we have left….not that he isn’t in perfect health!
I will try again…..but after 38 yrs. as his girlfriend, I think I know his answer…..
He even donates to the gorillas, etc….so he does like the zoo…..he is an animal lover but I think he just hates crowds at this point…..

  120. Mary says:

Many many thanks for all you do for the pandas. We live in Florida and keep track of all the pandas here in the states and were able to see Tai Shan ( and parents) 2 years ago when visiting DC. All who works with these animals are special and we know you’ll have a great day on Tuesday. Keep up this great work.

  121. PA pandafan says:

How exciting that Name Day is almost here! I will be joining Georgie, Widget, and the rest of the Pennsylvania delegation in our virtual seats.

Yes, please – as others have suggested, ask if the photographer can include some pictures of the Panda Bloggers for those of us in virtual seats.

We can’t wait to hear every last detail in future blogs from those of you attending!

Moderators: You will be exhausted by the time this week ends. First, look at how many blogs there are here BEFORE Tuesday. Then after attending the ceremony, you will need to review all of our blogs following the announcement! Thanks again for all you do, and enjoy the ceremony.

  122. Britney says:

Moderator , Please save me a virtual seat to. Thanks!

    Moderator’s note: You bet!

  123. marcia from PA says:

How I wish I could be there! Unfortunately, I am in Pennsylvania. I will be there in spirit, for sure. Have fun, all you lucky panda fans who are able to attend. Sending BIG hugs and kisses to sweet baby and ALL the pandas!!

  124. Dennis & Lynn Carney says:

TO THE NURSERY RHYME FUZZY WUZZY WAS A BEAR:
    Chubby Panda is a bear…..
    Pandaholics all love to stare….
    Chubby Panda has no name….
Come this Tuesday that will change…..
Chubby Panda we wish we could be there…..
All your fans in abscence still care…..
Chubby Panda live long while we stare….
At your posted videos wishing we could be there!!!

Keep up the informative blogs and information coming as Lynn wants me to call her in the Hospital as soon as the name is revealed as the SDZ and Meercats and all the Pandaholics are really keeping her spirits up after being in a Hospital bed since last December, hoping that she can finally be released to see our new Pride and Joy His Royal Chubbiness and Queen Bai Yun,King Gao Gao ,and the Princesses Lin Lin and ZZ Top hopefully in person again……

  125. Linda says:

Washington is to far away also but I will be there in thought and be checking the site for the new babys name, and thank for all the special updates and videos on the chubby panda my grandkids love to watch his and I send his picture to them as well.

  126. Marti, California says:

Hi, First of all I agree with #57, SON OF CLOUD………after his wonderful mother.
I’m so sad that I can’t come. I had to take two days off work for heart tests last week and will have to take off another two days off on the 23rd and 24th. I don’t know if I will have to take more days off so it is better that I stay at work, but I will be there in spirit.

Have fun all of you Panda fans that will be there to hear his name.

HUGS AND KISSES TO THE PANDAS
    THE PANDA FAN OXOXO

Moderator’s note: Good luck with your tests, Marti!

  127. Isis from Mexico says:

Could San Diego Zoo tweet the chosen name right after it is revealed on tuesday? I already follow you @sandiegozoo on tweeter, and me and several thousands souls around the world will be anxious to know it!

Moderator’s note: Yes indeed. Our Twitter poster will have her fingers poised!

  128. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#97 – Dianne in Texas – what a wonderful idea :) :) a Pandaholics convention with some advance notice many of us might be able to make it. Can just see it as we all converge on SanDiego :)

  129. Peggy says:

That is so sweet setting aside a space for the Panda fans. Wish I could be there but I’ll be working as always. Fantastic that we’re finally there and in a couple days we’ll know our cub’s name.

Now that would be a great idea Dianne. A special day for Panda fans from the blog to meet each other at the Zoo. The Zoo does have an area by the Children’s Zoo that can accommodate more people though perhaps Zoo staff have a better location. We can’t all meet in Panda Canyon. Think it might be too small and remember the zoo is open every day and believe me there are always a lot of people there. I’ve been trying to get down to the Zoo for months and so far it just hasn’t worked for this year so maybe next year.

  130. Carole in San Diego says:

I attended the naming ceremonies for both Su Lin and Zhen Zhen so I would hate to miss this one. Count me in.

Moderator’s note: I’m glad you can join us once again, Carole!

  131. Danielle, NY says:

There is a beautiful video retrospective of Fu Long’s 26 month in Vienna on YouTube: “We will miss you, Happy Dragon!”. Fu Long is scheduled to go to Bifengxia, China on November 18, 2009.

  132. SAN Di says:

Thank you for reserving a space for the panda fans. I will be delighted to accept your invitation and be at the ceremony where Xióng Wěi officially is named. (fingers crossed)

    Moderator’s note: See you soon!

  133. Lilarose in Oregon says:

#119 Jeslyn–YOU JEST! Are you pulling our collective legs about your 38-year relationship with your boyfriend, who is age 91??

Ah, well, we did try to help you with some of life’s relationship problems, but even if they don’t apply to you, maybe they will to someone else!

Maybe your guy could get together with my beautiful (still) 96-year old Mom while you go to the San Diego Zoo, eh? Not to worry, my mom isn’t interested in a long-term relationship….she just lives day to day and wants even more! And she isn’t looking for a guy with money since she has plenty of her own!

  134. AC in NYC says:

I need a virtual seat too, please save me one. There is no doubt that I love pandas forever. I have watched #11 exam many times, and expect many more times to come. The not too mellow fellow is just perfect.

  135. Frances in NYC says:

Well, Jeslyn #119, that certainly puts a different perspective to things! Nevertheless, I hope you successfully tempt him to accompany you to the ceremony.

  136. Page says:

Jeslyn, It’s funny how we all misread you as a youngster under the sway of a willful hunk! You were nice not to scold us. I think the shrinks call it “projection,” putting our histories onto you! My uncle is 97 now and has a peach of a girlfriend who is 90. He wouldn’t be up to the panda-naming (two years ago he would), but if we lived in California, I know she’d join me for the adventure. Hope your day works out well, whichever you decide to do.

Some animal rescue organizations have online auctions to help raise funds and ask their “friends” to contribute items. As an artist, I’d be happy to make something for a panda auction. Does the Zoo do anything like that? I know it takes lots of volunteer time to organize, but they do work.

Moderator’s note: I’ll forward your generous offer to the appropriate folks.

  137. Widget says:

I had this dream……..I drove, swam, sat on a train, flew in a plane, walked and walked and walked. With one destination in mind…..The San Diego Zoo to meet our wonderful Moderator. Finally, it would all be answered. I ran to my seat. There I was amongst all of the other Pandaholics in our “Panda Fans Forever” saved seating. I looked, ran my eyes all over the crowd. Finally, I looked at one seat and there was a tiny sign that said “San Diego Zoo Blog Moderator”. I was estatic! I zoomed in with my binoculors and sitting right there was the Moderator… with a brown paper bag over their head. :-(

Moderator’s note: Don’t give me any ideas!

  138. Janet Haislip says:

As our night’s are getting colder, I was wondering if the den has to be heated?

Moderator’s note: No need. That’s what fur and Mom’s body heat are for!

  139. Brandy NY says:

Good morning all. After watching Doxiemom’s trip down memory lane of Chubby’s first 100 days and now his namming ceremony upon us, where did the time go. I can’t believe we are at this point already. I too need that virtual seat but send best wishes to all that can attend. A great day to be had for sure. We all will be on pins and needles awaiting all your reports when you get back. Any one of you please give our moderators a big Howdy from me. #117- pandafan I agree. I f we have to have an addiction why not for a baby panda bear. #118- Judy isn’t that Bhuddist Chant? #124- Dennis/Lyn cute poem. Well the name I picked was Yong Siang- eternally blessed. But ofcourse I will be happy with any name chosen. Moderators don’t forget to let us know what you all picked. I hope you have great weather. For everyone attending, have a great time.

  140. Catbelly says:

“Other” Suzanne – your comment in post #41 had me and hubby chuckling! ROFL

PFF’s who can’t attend will definitely be there in spirit! Just watch for the rustling of leaves and flowers.

I can imagine the excitement is building today not only in Panda Canyon, but all over the world ! ! !

Moderator’s note: We’ll be on the lookout for the rustling!

  141. Ruth from Austria says:

#110 Phyllis, thank you so much for all your prayers for our beloved Fu Long. I was really moved when reading them. I am sure that your prayers are going to help Fu Long settling in the foreign land without his mummy. Thanks for your empathy!I love all the pandas all over the world but it was so great to have a baby panda close by which I could visit in person. But I don’t want to be ungrateful since SDZ’s web cam is so delightful for us panda lovers. It feels liking being at SDZ particularly when his Royal Cuteness is looking straight into the camera, i.e. at ME. As lots of you panda bloggers who are not able to attend the naming ceremony I shall be sitting in my virtual seat which, I trust, will be reserved for me.

Moderator’s note: Indeed it will, Ruth! An emotional week for you.

  142. Kate says:

I’ll need 2 virtual seats please. My granddaughter, who just turned 5 and wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up, has been watching pandas from the time she’s been big enough to sit on my knee at the computer. She’s hoping for Son of Cloud. She gets out of school at 2 est so hopefully it won’t take too long to get the video up.

Moderator’s note: Two seats coming up!

  143. Phyllis says:

    Good Morning Beautiful Panda Family,

Dianne in TX #48 and #97
You have wonderful ideas friend. I love the idea of maybe getting a picture of those of our panda family who are lucky enough to attend the naming ceremony; and as I’ve said before—I prayer our financial situation changes so that my hubbie and I can attend the Pandaholic Convention you are proposing. Keep me posted, I’d be willing to help if I can.

    Dearest Moderator,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Again, you are always thinking of us panda-lovers. Although I would give anything to be able to attend, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving me a “virtual seat” (now that you explained it to me). Sorry I’m not so “up” on all these things, I am trying to learn. How do I connect to the SDZ facebook page to see your pictures? PLEEEEASE, you personally, have the best time you’ve ever had at the name ceremony. You have certainly earned it and more!! :-)

    Marian (UK) 80
I know what it is like to have pain in your hands. Is there anything we can do to help you a little bit with yours?

    Linda #98
LOVED your idea about “Meet the Staff”. Moderator, please don’t be so humble, we all love you and your counterparts. Without all of you, we would not know half of what we know. We would LOVE to have the opportunity of seeing a picture with name tags or something—honest :-)

    Jersey #101
I will say a prayer that God continues to Bless you with continued recovery. Just remember—”With God, ALL Things Are Possible”.

    Liana in San Diego #112
I haven’t a clue on what to tell you to do, but I for one would love ANY pictures you were able to take and post somewhere so those of us who couldn’t attend could see the pictures. Thank you for your unselfishness.

    Marti in Cal #126
My husband is a cardiac patient. I will say a prayer for you and your loved ones, that God grants you health, faith, and the necessary strength to see this through. God Bless You!

    Jeslyn in San Diego #119
Boy, am I GLAD I kept my mouth closed and didn’t try to tell you how to conduct your romance with your boyfriend. After 38 years, you could teach ME a thing or two I’m sure!! Hee Hee :-) I’m afraid I have to agree with you, at the blessed age of 91, he has a right to avoid crowds if he has a need. I am a good deal younger, and there are times when my health prevents me from being able to do something I really want to do in my heart. The ONLY advice I will offer is this….hold hands and remember always why you are together! :-) :-)

    Dear Panda Family,
I know I am repeating myself so please forgive me. A great many people are in pain right now because they are losing their Fu Long. Please understand if I re-post a previous posting of mine in a small attempt to help give them a little tiny bit of piece. Thanks for understanding.

Moderator’s note: Here’s the San Diego Zoo’s Facebook page.

  144. KellyinFLA says:

If this little guy isn’t the son of cloud, I don’t know what panda is…Son of Cloud!!!! :) fingers crossed….One day and counting….

  145. Jola, Austria says:

Phyllis #110: Thank you so much. I’m sure, our little prince will have a wonderful time with lots of new panda friends and keepers at China. Although it is hard to let him go, he’s going to be a teenager …

Ruth #94: You are right, Fu Long and Yang Yang are used to be seperated for hours since Fu Long was about only a few weeks old. At Zoo Vienna Mummy Yang Yang and Daddy Long Hui were allowed to spend time together regularly, while Fu Long was slepping or playing in the other part of the giant panda’s enclosure.

Danielle #131: Thanks for mentioning my video on Fu Long’s time at Zoo Vienna. Hope you watched it with sound. That music was written by a young musician only for that video. :-)

  146. Laura (UK) says:

    Linda #98 – what a great idea!

Lovely Moddie, I know that you guys aren’t the main attraction – nothing could ever beat our panda family! BUT you should realise that you are still stars to us. You are the guys who keep our pandas happy and healthy, who put in time and energy beyond the call of duty with the blog updates and videos and live cams… A teeny tiny section just telling us a bit about some of the staff wouldn’t hurt, you wouldn’t have to reveal any personal data, but you could perhaps tell us a bit about your training and qualifications, and how you ended up in your jobs? I am sure it would be very inspirational to many young people out there considering careers in vetinary fields, or in any career involving animal care!

  147. Lisa in Colorado says:

How nice of you to have a special section for us. I’ll have to take a virtual seat too. When I flew into San Diego Friday I thought of cubbie and the naming ceremony. It’s nice to see Balboa park as you descend. I left beautiful San Diego yesterday and came back to snowy Denver. From 70 degrees to 20-something degrees in just under 2 hours.

  148. PandahugCanada says:

There is nothing on this earth that can melt my heart like a panda (not to mention the most adorable baby panda, ever!). I am so enthralled. I hope little “Siao Long” :) knows how much he’s loved, worldwide.

  149. Georgie says:

We are witnessing an unbelievable “happening”!

A Baby Panda Ambassador, from the San Diego Zoo, has brought people together from all over the World.
    Love triumphs!!

    United Nations: Take note.

  150. jeanneb says:

    Moderator question:

Perhaps I’ve missed it, but do you ever show our little cubbie when Bai takes him out of the den?
So many times I’ve watched an empty den wondering where he is. Where does she take him? And
    do you ever show it?

    Thanks,
    Jeanne

Moderator’s note: We don’t have video of Bai Yun taking the cub out of the den, but it can be witnessed on Panda Cam, if you’re timing is right (or lucky!). She takes him out to the bedroom or sunroom areas.

  151. Rosie says:

Best wishes from Cleveland, Ohio! I’ll be there in spirit, in my virtual seat. Wish I could be there in person. :)

  152. Rhoda in IN says:

Well whatever he ends up being called, I’m sure a LOT of thought and love has gone into his name. I can’t wait to hear the results!! I’ll be there in spirit since I HAVE to be here in Indiana!! :p

  153. DoxieMom says:

Liana #112 and dearest, hardworking Moderator, there is a place on the San Diego Zoo FaceBook page for Fans to post photos and links to videos, too, as well as comments!!!

On the Wall under the Share box there are two blue buttons, one is labeled “San Diego Zoo”, the other “Just Fans” – you can post photos on the “Just Fans” page!! And Liana, I’m sure they will be absolutely wonderful as they will be ‘live’! Since I cannot attend the ceremony, I will sit in my ‘virtual seat’ while recording the PandaCam! LOL! I anxiously await learning the cub’s name, and seeing everyone’s photos and videos!!!

Moderator’s note: You can tell I’m not very familiar with our Facebook page–thank you, DoxieMom! Here’s the link…

  154. Carol in IL says:

As everyone else, I DO wish I could join you for little fluff ball’s big day. Maybe you can take a picture of the crowd with an empty chair in front and an arrow pointing to it that says: “YOU ARE HERE” and we would all feel better. :)

With everything sad going on in the world, we have to enjoy all these special happy times. And what better way than with our loveable pandas! How they all warm our hearts and fill our days with joy.

I am so grateful for everyone at SDZ for doing the “job” we all wish we could do and then sharing, teaching and entertaining us all over the world. It would be so interesting if all of us incurable Pandaholics could submit our hometowns somewhere to see how far-reaching Panda love goes. Of course, panda news comes first, and you can see we eat up anything you tell us. (Like maybe a better hint of little fluff’s name?)

Moderator’s note: I like your idea of a virtual guestbook for panda fans to sign. We won’t have time to put that in place for the naming ceremony, but perhaps when the little guy makes his public debut…

  155. David says:

At 08:53 I noticed a new spot on our Cubbies back, or does the camara lens need cleaning?

Moderator’s note: We’ll ask Bai Yun to include the camera lens in her next cleaning round.

  156. VIOLETTA says:

I send my very best wishes for the young Panda. I look every day at the Panda Cam and the informations.
With many thanks for all in the team.

    From Switzerland.
    VIOLETTA

  157. Deana says:

I love all the blogs on here from all of us panda fans. How about after the naming ceremony, a banner is made and hung in the birthing den with his name on it?? That would be so much fun to see.I have already mentioned to my friends please don’t call me during the ceremony I won’t answer the phone as I will be waiting for the results of cubbie’s name. Thank you for saving “virtual seats” for us who can not attend.I was wondering though, will Bai & Gao Gao get any recognition at the ceremony too? I think that they should that would be neat. Thank you SDZ staff for everything you do and for keeping all of us pandaholics happy and content. You are doing an amazing job!!!! How about that banner??

Moderator’s note: What do you think Bai Yun’s reaction would be?

  158. Glenda says:

I wish, also, I could be there. If I lived in the area I’d be there for sure. Will be anxiously awaiting the news!

  159. Bev says:

I am so excited about this baby panda.. I visited the zoo in 2002 while visiting my nephew who is in the military.. What a thrill for me.. I have always been a Panda lover and since being there have watch the cam almost everyday.. Wish I was closer so I could be there for this special day..
Will be looking for the new name …

  160. cindy in KC says:

I very distinctly see a black spot of fur on his backside, as well as the one on the tip of his tail..
too bad we cant call him inky… just kidding… he is precious! cant belive he started out like a ’stick o butter’ and now has grown into a fine looking boy! :)

  161. Paula in Atlanta says:

Hope tomorrow’s ceremony goes off well. Love watching the chublet.

Xi Lan at ZA has been very active – Friday and all morning today. There was a 30 minute TV show this past Friday evening that was about the Save So They Can Stay campaign. They showed Lun and Yang coming to Atlanta when they were 2 and, of course, showed clips of Lani and Xman with Lun. Hopefully, this show will bring in lots more donations – maybe even some more corporate donations.

On the ZA webpage you can donate, adopt a Panda, or t-shirts ($21 of the $25 goes to the campaign) as various ways to donate and purchase gifts. We’re still hopeful we get enough money. I’d hate to have the pandas leave Atlanta. It has been so great having them and their babies here. Lun is such a good mother and we want to see all her future cubs born here – not in Chengdu.

Anyway, looking forward to finally hearing the chublet’s new name. Will keep tuned to the website all day tomorrow.

    Paula

  162. Jeri says:

#97 Dianne in Texas, Pandas Unlimited has had an annual birthday dinner at NZ in honor of Tai Shan’s birthday every year since his first birthday. Members from all over the world have come. We started out collecting money for a gift for Tai, but now we have funds also set up at SD, ZA and Memphis for the enrichment of the pandas. It’s really great to be able to get together with people who are panda fanatics!

  163. Pandalektro says:

Panda fan for life !!! what a cutie little guy :)

  164. Sukochi Lee says:

I can’t WAIT till Tuesday. One more day.

  165. Carmon says:

I’m in Alaska, so please save a virtual seat for me. We are taking a cruise out of CA in January, so I have planned a couple of days at the end of our vacation to come to San Diego, so hoping to see the little guy then. The last time I was there, Su Lin was a little girl, still hanging out with her mother and Mei Sheng was in the area to the right of where Bai and Su were. Got some great pictures of Mei but it was hard to get good ones as Su stayed up high in the trees. So anxious to hear what his name is going to be!

  166. Nancy in MN says:

MN is too far to make it to the ceremony, and I have a meeting at 11am, but I’ll be wearing my panda pin in honor of the little guy, and checking the website will be the first thing I do when I get back to my desk. I’ve been to the SDZ twice, and am hopeful there will be many more trips to see these enchanting animals. Thanks for all you do for us panda-holics!

  167. Carolyn Comings says:

Another Carolyn C in Central California… Unfortunately, 400+ miles is a heck of a commute for the lunch break, so keep one of those virtual seats warm for me!

  168. Diana says:

I love this excitement. Although I don’t contribute frequently to the blogs, I read most all of them. I sure hope to be there Tuesday morning (will take an early and long lunch from work)!!

I suppose the Hunte Ampitheatre will be a popular place–early arrival advised??

Moderator’s note: But remember we have reserved seating (look for the sign). See you tomorrow!

  169. Aileen says:

    I wish I could come!

  170. Cindy/Texas says:

I can’t wait to see which name wins….I wish I could be there! I will be there in spirit and waiting to see the video! Thanks for all those at SDZ who help to preserve these wonderful animals!

  171. Mary from Brooklyn says:

I read over the weekend from a reliable source that the staff at BFX intend to integrate Fu Long into the 2-year old cohort after he clears quarantine. I sure hope it works out for him. At least he has not been on his own for a long while (as have the US cubs) and that should help make the process smoother.

One day to naming and counting……

  172. Char says:

Look at this incredible, beautiful black and white net of love we have all created! It eases my loneliness. SO many blessings are wished for all of you great folks at SDZ and most of all for our shared sweet baby!

  173. Dee says:

Can anyone tell me the estimated date of the new cubs release into the public enclosure? My family and I are planning a visit to the zoo early next spring and would hate to schedule before he makes his debut. Thanks!

Moderator’s note: We can’t promise anything, but…his siblings made their debuts in December.

  174. Adrienne says:

A BIG BIG thank you to all the Panda staff ! need any help?

  175. Debi says:

I can’t believe that in less than 24 hours this little guy is finally going to have an official name! I am so excited, even though he will always be Chubby Cubby, The Adorable One, Rolly Polly to the rest of us…
    :)

  176. Lilarose in Oregon says:

OK, in defense of a few of us who tried to support Jeslyn when we thought she was having young romance problems, keep in mind that she started the post on the subject. I also want to say that as a retired high school business teacher, I saw a number of my young ladies come to class with tears from being verbally or physically abused by their boyfriends. That was a number of years ago, and the problem has gotten worse in our schools. I will stand up for any woman in those circumstances, thus my comments.

Now back to the San Diego Zoo’s big day coming up! I am looking forward to seeing videos and pictures of all kinds, and the Zoo staff is doing a great job with everything. I especially like the idea of an online guestbook for another function down the line.

Aren’t computers great! When I started teaching high school, we didn’t have computers in the classrooms.

  177. Dee says:

Wow! Thanks for the fast response! We should be fine since we aren’t planning to come until Feb or March. Can’t wait to see the little guy.

  178. Susan (UK) says:

I hope there are some virtual seats left. Our internet has been down for three days and we’ve only just got it back, so I missed this post. Could we have three seats for my husband, daughter and, of course, myself? Thank you.

    Moderator’s note: Certainly!

  179. Alice says:

I have also seen a dark spot on the cub’s back but it moves around. I think it is a spot on the camera lens.
Wish that I could be there and am hoping his name will be “Son of Cloud”.

  180. Shirley says:

Chubby has a long way to go before he will debut, I think. He’s having a lot of trouble learning to roll over efficiently, and never mind crawling or walking. It just seems like a 5 minute expenditure of energy is all he can manage before he’s out cold snoozing again. I know that the keepers and vets are saying that he’s developing “on par,” but looking at the milestones, it seems like our little darling is on a development plateau. What do you think?

  181. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Talked to boyfriend this morning and he reluctantly said he would try to get here in time to get to the zoo……but since he sounded so reluctant…..I doubt we will make it.
I told him 10 AM but if he gets here around 10:30, it will be too late.
We’ll see what happens…..I think I am going to wear an orange jacket in case someone wants to say hello……tall blonde. I hope we make it there and also to try out the new restaurant!

Moderator’s note: Tell him you have reserved seating and the ceremony will only be about 20 minutes long. Maybe that will help!

  182. Anne TREVIDIC says:

    Hello from Paris,

We love Pandas in France too ! Every day I look for the live Panda’s cam and I read all news about the cub and his family. The team of the San Diego Zoo is fantastic ! I live in Mexico several months a year : I’ll visit the Zoo coming soon but for Thuesday, November 17 … it’s really too far from Paris ! I hope that the little black and white bear will have a great naming ceremony and I’m sure that the final name will be brilliant.
Thanks a lot and best wishes from France !
    Anne.

  183. Brandy NY says:

Everyone have a great day tomorrow.

  184. Linda A. / NorCal says:

I’m so happy for all those who will be there tomorrow. Equally, all the virutal “seaters.” I have a business appointment (which I’m trying to change right now!!!!). So I will have to rely (probably) on all of you to tell me how exciting it was. And I’ll look forward to the video. I am excited; we panda fans are a devoted group!!

  185. Hazel says:

Due to various reasons many pandaholics are unable to attend the cubs naming ceremony tommorrow and have requested ‘virtual’ seating in the arena.
Are there any vacant ‘virtual’ seats still remaining? – due to personal circumstances I am also unable to attend.
I requested a keeper pass my message to Bai – she has replied saying providing there is still a ‘virtual’ seat available it will be fine with her.
In less than 24hrs we will all know the name of our large ‘Mellow Fellow’ – Bai said her vote was included in the count ….. fingers crossed, please give him a lovely name …..

Moderator’s note: If Bai says it’s okay, then a seat is yours! I’d do anything for Bai Yun!

  186. Deb says:

As soon as Plumpers gets his “forever name” tomorrow, will his picture be going up with his parents and sisters on the Panda Cam page?

    Moderator’s note: You bet!

  187. KayC says:

I would love to be there but alas, it is a long way from

So little cubbie finally gets a name tomorrow:-) I wish I could be there. I’ll be in one of those virtual seats.

It was my sister who introduced me to the panda cam when Hua Mei was bouncing around on logs and platforms with Bai Yun. Tomorrow is my sister’s birthday so it will be a nice surprise for her.

#22 Liana–I would not want to contribute to the delinquency of a first grader but I would think that a panda naming ceremony in the company of a grandmother and brother would have more educational value than a typical Tuesday in elementary school. Being able to tell the rest of the class about it from personally being there would be much better than trying to do it from “notes.” It would be an experience he would remember forever. (I’m a retired teacher by the way–have seen lots of “units” on polar bears, panda bears, sea creatures etc.)

#27 Joanne–That post brought tears to my eyes, so very true.

Thank you San Diego Zoo and staff for all you do to bring these beautiful creatures to our homes.

  188. Jane - Fairfield, VT says:

Please, please save a virtual seat for me, too. Northwest Vermont is a long ways away, but I will also be there in spirit and happiness. Can’t wait for his name; hope it’s Son of Cloud.

Dear Moderator(s) – you will need a very intense hand massage after all this typing. Thank you very much for your attention to us Pandaholics. :)

Moderator’s note: Tell me about it ;-) Thankfully, virtual seats are free and unlimited.

  189. Hazel says:

has it been determined who is the real daddy? – you may recall our Mei Sheng (now in China) was the ’second male’ to mate with a female. It has possibly been mentioned in an earlier blog and I missed reading it ….thanks….

  190. Pandafan#2 says:

Moderator, save 2 virtual seats for my mom and me, the only panda fans in the family! (Sad,my bros and my dad aren’t that interested) Are there any seats left? I’d like a squishy purple chair, and my mom would like a comfortable blue chair. :D I’ll wear my super long (but super cute) panda t-shirt tomorrow! I don’t think Napping Bear will know about his name tomorrow…. he’ll probably sleep through it all! ;)

    Moderator’s note: That’s a tall order!

  191. Pandafan#2 says:

I have a quick question: In the Meet The Pandas page, shouldn’t Su Lin be above Mei Sheng? She’s next oldest.

Moderator’s note: We have the pandas listed from oldest to youngest at the Zoo, and then we list the two now living in China, and then dear old Shi Shi, now residing in bamboo heaven but never far from our hearts.

  192. CHUNKS says:

I have my twitter account setup to have san diego zoo tweets sent directly to my phone so no matter where I am all get to know the cubbies name! I’m from nebraska and saw the pandas at SDZ only once (I believe I saw mei sheng and su lin) but that was enough to get me hooked! Not only that my family are all hooked to the blogs and exam videos! Wish I could be there. I’m hoping for the name Fu Sheng. A.K.A Mr. Fu. Please save me a virtual seat! Give mom and baby virtual hugs to please. ( pretty soon my family won’t be having to saw mr cubbie Yay!)

  193. Pandafan#2 says:

Oh Okay, so Zhen Zhen belongs above Mei Sheng, and then Su above Zhen, and then Bai and Gao. Okay! I miss Shi Shi dearly, though I never knew him. (Okay, I might have seen him when I visited the zoo when I was little) I really can’t wait until the ceremony!!!!!!! I hope Yun Zi was the name. Moderator…. do you have any idea about the name? Did you have a favorite?

Moderator’s note: I must remain neutral.

  194. Pandafan#2 says:

Oh yeah, I can’t make the ceremony, so…. I can’t meet the Moderators!!!!!!!! :( :( We live 3 hours away. :( Oh well, Guess you won’t see my face anytime soon. (aka tomorrow!)

  195. SKB in AK says:

Please save me a seat with in the virtual spectators “Panda Fans Forever” section. Alaska is just to far away and my bosses would have fits. Wish I could be there for real.

  196. Carol from Kalamazoo says:

I wasn’t upset about missing the naming ceremony, although if anyone were to offer me a free plane ticket I wouldn’t have turned it down, because I knew the name would be posted shortly aferward. But now that I know I will be missing a chance to meet some of my fellow blog readers and the moderators, I am bummed. Perhaps the videographer could be persuaded to do a slow pan of you guys and the moderators could give a discreet earlobe tug ala Carol Burnett so we at home will at least know what you look like.

Anyway, everyone have a great day (silly me, of course you will) and I’ll be in my virtual seat wishing I could meet you all.

  197. Liz says:

    Moderator,

Since, I can’t be there tomorrow. Can you provide me with more details of the ceremony? Will there be the traditional Chinese dance and song with the dragon? Who will announce the name, the Chinese delegate of the SDZ president?

I enjoy the Chinese celebration that comes along with naming a cub. Last year, ZA had the Chinese song and dance, it was emotional to watch and such a proud moment for all. Thanks and hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow!

Moderator’s note: We’ll have a blog post tomorrow describing the event. I won’t spoil the plot!

  198. Britney says:

Thank you moderator for the virtual seat! Oh by the way maybe a hot pink virtual seat with a peace sign on it may be so cool!

  199. John Gunn says:

Good luck for the naming ceremony tomorrow. My new wife and I travelled from Britain to see the pandas on our recent honeymoon (that’s panda commitment!) and Zhen Zhen put on a great display for us! We’ve been following the little guy’s progress since August and can’t wait until we can get back to SDZ to call on him.

    Lots of love,

    J & Mitch

  200. Tiny says:

Ms. Moderator, I was wondering if the Pandas are allowed to have extra yummy treats from time to time for special occasions and holidays. Goodies like honey, peanut butter, ice cream (yum!) or do they have a very strict diet?

And I just had a fun thought while I was browsing the Wish List. Would it be possible to start making some special Holiday themed biscuits for our Pandas? Can’t you just see the Pandas holding a very large, bright red, beet pulp, heart-shaped biscuit for Valentines Day :) Or maybe some large decorated biscuits shaped like Easter eggs!! Heeheehee… the Keepers could hide the eggs all around their viewing area. And if their diet allows some honey or peanut butter, it could be baked in the biscuit batter. They could be listed on the Wish List so all of us could help contribute.

Anyway it was just a thought. :)

Moderator’s note: I’ll pass your ideas along!

  201. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Man, we are all just so giddy over anticipation of tomorrow.

  202. Liz says:

Moderator, I understand. I know you will provide us the details in due time, of course.

I have another question for you…a question I have wanted to ask for some time now. Do you know if the keepers ever tell the bears what’s going on? Don’t laugh, I realize it seems like a silly question and the bears don’t understand it, for after all they are bears. :-) . However, I was wondering if Kathy has told Bai that her baby boy will be named tomorrow.

Or, if the keepers have told Gao Gao, Su Lin or Zhen Zhen, they have a son or brother. If I was Zhen Zhen’s keeper, I would have told her when cubbie was born. Then, I suspect that beautiful, round face would stare back at me with a bright eye look of “lady, where’s my snackys”! ;) . Tomorrow is to be another glorious day that will be written in the history books!

Moderator’s note: I’m betting that they do.

  203. Liana in San Diego says:

#153 DoxieMom, thanks for the info about the Facebook page. Have copied down the info, and after the ceremony will work on getting photos up there. Are you a SoCal person, and will you be there?

#181 Jeslyn, will look for you in your orange jacket! Hoping you can make it tomorrow!

#187 KayC, alas, his mother (my very own daughter!!!) wouldn’t agree to taking him out of school. Oh well. Notes will have to do!

For the rest of you fans, I’ll let you all know when I get the pictures posted. Am searching for my long lens so I can take really really really close up photos!!

All a-twitter over the excitement just humming in the air! Just a few more hours, dear friends, and we’ll all know Chubblet’s new name!!

Moderator’s note: I’ll need to wear that paper bag over my head for sure now!

  204. Kate says:

I’ll be in the virtual seating area tomorrow. but whenever Widget is ready, pick me up in Pittsburgh to join in the panda caper! LOVE the cubby and all the pandas.

  205. pandafan-north says:

#177 Dee – February or March is a good time to visit if you want to see the soon-to-be-named panda prince on exhibit. They are very cute and curious at that age and can provide great memories. When I visited in March 2008, Zhen Zhen was out with Bai Yun. While I was there, a couple of the keepers came into the enclosure to do a bit of cleanup and spunky Zhen Zhen grabbed the rake handle in her mouth and tried to take it up the tree! Realize that at that time the rake would have been many times longer than her. It was quite a sight!

Everyone who is coming to the ceremony tomorrow – I will be in my virtual seat, trying to imagine the festivities. I’m looking forward to the video. Moderator, I’m sure you will get a great number of pats on your back – the least we panda fans can do to tell you how much we appreciate you! Have a wonderful time!!

  206. Marti says:

I check in on the baby several times each day and wish I could be there also (save another virtual seat for me!) I work at Disney World in Florida and Mickey and all his friends wish baby a Happy Naming Day!

  207. Bobbie Wood says:

Moderator, help! The reserved seating for pandafans is a sign-up tomorrow, right? Please tell me this is accurate!! I’ll be early :) I don’t have to have already applied for a special panda seat pass, correct ???
    Please advise :)

Moderator’s note: I already have you down on the list. We have a whole row reserved and can get more if needed. See you tomorrow!

  208. Susan says:

Do we have eto reserve for tomorrow? I want to be there!!!

Moderator’s note: Reservations are not needed, but if you’ve already mentioned in a previous comment that you’re coming, then I have you down on my little list just so I can be sure to look for you!

  209. Diana S. says:

Please, please save me a seat too—a virtual one unfortunately. I do like the suggestion of #97 Dianne in Texas—-what a great idea to all get together and put faces to names. I’m so sorry that I won’t be there tomorrow. What a great idea this Panda Fans Forever section. Thank you all so much for thinking of us. Can’t wait to hear his Royal Cuteness’ new name. I would have loved to meet you too, Moderator. Thank you, thank you for all you do for us loyal Pandaholics. Hopefully I can be there at the next get together!!

  210. Page says:

I love the idea of a PFF meet-up at some future time when we who live far from California can plan for it and see Chubby Cubby. I bet if we did this, the zoo would make sure we could see him. I’d vote for January 2011 (how about the 1st oe 2nd so we could panda-party New Year’s Eve?). In January, those of us who live in cold, cold climates would enjoy the California sun. (Well, once when I was in San Diego for Christmas Day, it was raining cats and dogs, but not pandas. I think that’s unusual.) That way, we could save up or start asking for the big 2010 Christmas gift to go. Black and white party hats for all!

  211. Page says:

At SanDiego6.com, there’s a story about one of their writers visiting the pandas in China, “Making The Panda Connection.” There seem to be a couple of mix-ups (wrong panda in photo caption and no mention of Gao Gao — he should write an objection). But there are some pictures and her impressions. This article, as others, mentions about China not having enough space for the pandas since the earthquake. I wonder why they wouldn’t let the ZA pandas stay where there is room and so much love that generates support for their efforts to save the bears. China does evidently house lots of pandas together, not that that seems to be bothering the pandas. They look happy with their carrots.

Off-topic for naming-eve! Sorry. I can’t wait to see you all on camera!

  212. cindy in KC says:

Just checked on baby boy- now the black spot is gone from his back.. is it a spot on the lens or is it less visible at times? Love the boy!! I will be watching tomorrow.. :)

Moderator’s note: It’s just a spot on the lens.

  213. Joy in Kansas says:

I love the idea of reserved seating for panda blog fans. Like so many others I have to be at work and cannot travel from Kansas to attend, so I’ll be needing some of those virtual seats for myself, my two sons, and my mother. Good thing virtual seats don’t take up much space! Can you imagine if everyone who posts on the panda blog *could* all be there? They’d have to move the ceremony to a football stadium or something! LOL!!!

  214. Bobbie Wood says:

    Moderator: BLESS YOU!!! :)

  215. Deb says:

I’ll be making a yummy cookies ‘n’ cream pie in honor of Plumpers (soon to be “Yun Zi”) tomorrow. If I can’t be there, I’ll have a celebration of my own and share with my friends!

Moderator’s note: Panda celebrations are indeed meant to be shared!

  216. Pam says:

I’m packing my virtual suitcase, getting ready to head to the virtual airport in the morning. Just in case all of this virtual travel doesn’t work out, please save me a seat in the virtual seating section! Thank you Ms. Moderator for all that you do. I sure hope you don’t go with that bag on your head plan!

  217. Peggy says:

I will be there, I have rearranged my dog walking schedule so I can attend! I attended ZZ’S and I wouldn’t miss this one either…can’t wait…

Moderator’s note: Glad you have your priorities straight. See you there, Peggy!

  218. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

Dear Moderators – I do not envy your job tomorrow :( – the minute the name is announced the floodgates will open & you’ll have hundreds of unhappy panda fans upset their name was was the one picked. :( it happens every time (many are very vocal ) & then after a few days we see our panda growing into his name. While I dislike some of the English translations the Chinese names do all fit our pandas :) So get well rested & have patience tomorrow.

A thanks for the info about the tribute to FuLong – too sweet :)

  219. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Rain, what rain? It hasn’t rained for over 110 days here….in San Diego.
These pandas don’t know what bad weather is at all!

  220. Widget says:

Moderator..you really made me lol at your responce to #203 Liana…:-). Both cats jumped a foot off the bed at the sudden hysterics in the quiet room. Me thinks a certain person is in for a big day tomorrow….and please have fun everyone that can make it to the ceremony for real. It really is a wonderful time to look forward too, and to look back on in the future.

  221. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

I keep hoping when I see President Obama in China that a miracle will happen & the Chinese will suddenly announce that all the panda in the US will stay here & all cubs born will be US citizens & there will be a joint effort to determine which cubs breed with whom & where. Day dreams I know, but one can hope :)

  222. Nancy says:

I am so excited!!!! Can’t wait till that baby gets his name. I soooo wish I could go. I would ditch school for that cubbie if it wasn’t for the fact that final week is drawing so near. I even made him a gift, but I guess I just have to wait. Save me a virtual seat and takes lot of pictures now.

  223. ags says:

I don’t care what you name him tomorrow, I am gonna call him “Roly Poly” forever!
    Viva Roly Poly!!!!

  224. sue Martz says:

Diane in Texas, your idea is a good one, a pandaholics meeting at the SDZ next year. Just like the Elvis fans and Star Trekers. Pandaholics unite!! Wonder how many of us are out there.

  225. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

While we all wait for our cubbies name to announced take a few minutes to check out the keepers love at youtube “:111109 Lin Ping and Keeper Play Giant Panda Cub Thailand Chiang Mai Zoo” Reminds me of Brian & his panda Tai Shan. Come on SDZ admit you must snuggle & play with the pandas until they are about 12 months :) :)

  226. Dianne in Texas says:

Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back on the blog. Been busy…had to take my little dog to vet for shots! Poor baby, he hates those.

I am so happy that so many of you like the idea of a PFF get together (convention-style). Thanks to all of you. I realize it’s short notice, but I was thinking of Jan. or Feb. of 2010. Sorry, Page, I cannot wait a year to come see this little guy. I was planning to come out there in January, but for this I could postpone it til Spring. Any other thoughts on the date? I’m excited about tomorrow, but afraid to get my hopes up for the name. I voted for Son of Cloud. All fingers crossed! :) Why is this little guy so much more special to us?

Jeri #162: I had heard about this yearly celebration for Tai, but didn’t know it was a dinner or other details. Thanks for the information. I wish I had been able to see Tai more often, but haven’t been free to travel until the last 2 years. So I finally got to D.C. last May to see him. I’ve been bugging FONZ for a time of his departure, but they won’t answer me back. I’m assuming sometime soon. I LOVE THAT BEAR!

  227. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

I am sitting here watching mother of the year nurse her little cubbie and she is tapping her right foot like she is listening to some good tunes. U2 perhaps? Greenday? It is adorable. I wish I could attend the ceremony tomorrow, if it was the 18th he would be named on my birthday! I am sure whichever name they pick will suit our little guy. I will save my pennies and hopefully get there someday when he finally comes out in public! Have a great ceremony, I hope it is a picture perfect day for all including all the pandas!

  228. Sue, Massachusetts says:

I will be hard at work tomorrow, but I hope to tune on my computer to watch the proceedings! I am so impressed with these blogs, all the fans and enthusiasm, and the moderator, just how great you are. I continue to be delighted by baby panda and his good good Bai Yun mother. It feels like a community. Have a wonderful day tomorrow celebrating baby’s new name!

  229. Deana says:

Hi moderator I have a question but it may sound silly….Have any of the keepers who have had the honor of handling cubbie during exam times, ever been able to kiss or tickle cubbie’s adorable cute little nose? I have a nose fetish with this little guy. I just want to reach through my screen and give him a kiss and a slight tickle rub on his cute wet nose. Maybe there are others who would like to do the same? One more question sorry…..How old will cubbie be before his nose starts turning black?
I am so excited about the ceremony and I hope that I dream about pandas tonight. What a wonderful dream that would be!!! Moderator your the best can’t wait to see who you are tomorrow on the video.

  230. Dorothy Reed says:

I will be coming to the naming ceremony for my daughter’s friend, who lives in Shasta City, CA. She is an avid fan of the panda baby and could not be here so I, who lives is San Diego and am a member, will be there for her. I don’t even know the friend’s name but I will get some memory gift for her. Looking foreward to seeing all the baby’s friends and well-wishers!!

Moderator’s note: What a nice thing to do for your daughter’s friend. I look forward to meeting you!

  231. Pandafan#2 says:

Aw, neutral? Shoot. I think the cub is letting out his nervous energy by rolling around tonight! He is very flexible. I love the cub soooooooo much!!!!!!!! Moderator, I bet we will have a virtual stadium at this point!!!! I would get panda earrings, but my ears are not pierced, and will not be pierced until I am 13. (2 months!)

  232. Candy in Victor, IA says:

Drag in 3 more virtual seats for me and my 2 grandkids! I’ve not missed a naming ceremony (virtually)yet! I have a good friend flying out next week and she has promised me some good pictures of the girls. I can’t wait and I’m terribly envious!!

Moderator’s note: Will do! I’m going to bed now with a smile on my face for all of the pandas’ many fans from across the country and around the world who wish nothing but the best for these bamboo bears.

  233. Dennis & Lynn Carney(NJ) says:

Well the date we “Pandaholics” have been waiting for is finally here…..Save us 2 Virtual seats as well and we can’t wait to see the Moderator and everybody at SDZ later via internet and yes Moderator tug your ear so we can see you ,as soon as the announcement is made I will call Lynn in the Hospital to let her know his name…And once Lynn finally gets released from the Hospital and hopefully has to see her SoCal Doctor’s and more importantly visit with you all….It’s amazing how something that started the size of a stick of butter can melt so many hearts around the world…..The whole world will be waiting and anticipating both in person and Virtually via the internet when the Prince finally gets his name…..The name isn’t all that important as long as he and his relatives remain healthy and give out their black & white furry love to us all….Keep up the great work as everybody involved at the SDZ and now “Pandaholics”worldwide have united over their love for this miracle baby….And yes a virtual good wishes book as was suggested for all of us virtual guests that really want to be there for the festivities would be a nice gesture to see all the Pandaholics and where they are located in our shrinking world via the internet ……

  234. Kelly (Sydney Australia) says:

I would love to one day see the baby cub next time I’m in the US I will be making my way to San Deigo the pandas, I watch him for a little bit every day and it’s put a smile on my face.

  235. Helena from Switzerland says:

Warm wishes from Switzerland; I wish I could beam me to San Diego today ;-)

  236. Jessy says:

Aw, I wish I could join you all. But I live so many hours away from San Diego. Save me a virtual seat please. And an extra chair for my big bro. His birthday is November 17, and it’s already November 17 here in my part of the globe. We are 14 hours earlier than San Diego. Try to guess where we live, Moderator!

Here, it will be 1 AM, November 18 during the naming ceremony. We’ll wait impatiently to find out his name first thing in the morning. Wish we will be able to see some photos or videos tomorrow morning. Pleazzzzzz don’t disappoint us! Big thanks!

    Moderator’s note: Kazakstan?

  237. Anna says:

I have love you moderator(s). You have the best intentions and affection for both pandas and pandaholics. I would love to have a realtime seating in Panda Fans Forever but alas, I must also request a virtual seating…up close please. I really love to see and hear clearly the speakers. Our most blessed cubbie will get his best name and join his beloved siblings. It is so exciting to know that SDZ has had five naming ceremonies. However, this is my second ceremony. I love you San Diego.

  238. TonyMo says:

I will be there with my son. One of his earlest memories was going to the Zoo to see Mei, now he cant wait to meet Mei’s lil brother. Hope to see you all there.

After it’s all said and done, Bai is gonna watch the kids while me and Gao go out for a drink and catch up.

    Who wants to go?

  239. LH says:

It’s only 11pm and I have already staked out my own seat in the VPG – Virtual Peanut Gallery for tomorrow morning’s ceremony. It’s kinda dark here in here… but I’m the one up there on the top seat of the virtual bleachers, bundled up in layers of fleece and a big fuzzy hat, and waving my black and white “Go Bears!” pennant.

Come on virtual visitors – grab your space and keep me company in here until the event starts. There’s still plenty of room, thanks to good Moderator event planning.

  240. TonyMo says:

    Dennis & Lynn (#17)

I’m sure i am joined by all of the panda family here in wishing your wife the speediest and most miraculous of recoveries. The day will soon come you will be able to again enjoy the zoo, and the great cali weather. Our thoughts will be with you both. If you think it feels like forever, put it into perspective. Does it really seem like 100 days ago we were all crouching around our monitors and asking if tonight is the night we grow by 1?

    Tony M

  241. Jenny says:

After tommorow, the #5 will get a cute name, and maybe we will develop a nickname for him. This morning I had spent 2 hours on youtube watching panda videos, sister zhen is too cute to describe in the video “panda tales”, and of course this boy will grow to be a studmuffin just like Gao.

  242. Lynda Miller, Lansing, MI says:

Tuesday 11/17/2009 – THE BIG DAY!!

  243. Lynda Miller, Lansing, MI says:

I hit enter too quickly!! I can not WAIT to see the video later today of the naming ceremony (highlights) and to see what our little man’s name will be!! Such a big day for him and yet, this morning onthe cam he and mumma are just sleeping in the den, looking so happy and peaceful!!

I would have LOVED to be in my most favorite place in the world today for the ceremony but I will certainly be in my virtual seat!!! Save me a place!!

  244. carol says:

i’m up early and getting in the virtual line, wearing my virtual “PFF” t-shirt, trying to get a good virtual seat. can’t wait!!!

  245. Deana says:

Good morning Ms. Moderator and fellow panda lovers. The big day has FINALLY arrived what an exciting day this will be. I have been watching Bai Yun and cubbie for the last couple of hours sleeping and cuddling close to eachother. What a BEAUTIFUL sight. And then all of the sudden Bai Yun got up quickly and woke cubbie up and patted him on his little head and nursed him to give him energy for his big day and after nursing she ever so gently groomed him so that he was spic & span. He didn’t care much for the grroming though but he finally gave in. After Bai Yun was finished with his grroming, she stood up and went outside for a short period of time and then PRESTO she walked into the room with the cutest little tuxedo I have ever seen along with a top hat for his cute little head. His cumberbun and bowtie is bright red so everyone can see him. Bai Yun dressed himand he actually enjoyed the tuxedo and especially the top hat. He is ready for his pictures to be taken. The security guards talked with Bai Yun last night out in her enclosure over the fence and told her that CNN News, FOX Network, and PeoplePets will be covering the naming ceremony and have requested an interview after the event. And National Geographic has also requested that a documentary be filmed of the soon to be named panda cub. My my, what a star!!!
Have a GREAT day everyone and enjoy the moment.

  246. Lisa in Maine says:

I did my best to convince my husband to buy last minute airplane tickets from Bangor Maine to San Diego. I figured we could fly in in the morning and fly home in the evening. I would only miss one day of work. No luck, he wouldn’t go for it. He knows how much it means to me, but he said “it just doesn’t make sense”. Shows you how much he knows.

I will be watching and waiting for the announcement and pics and video.

  247. kat Wilson says:

Okay, little one, this is your BIG day!!! You will have your name soon! You are so cute this morning, momma Bai is getting you ready for the festivities, and you will be, as you have been, the bright, shiny star of the day.

Wishing you a most wonderful day!

    auntie kat

  248. Laurie in Baltimore says:

Count me in for the Pandaholics Convention!! Would love to see San Diego and the SDZ pandas!! Of course, fingers are crossed that next year will be Mei Xiang’s year for another baby here at the NZ!!!! :-)
Also, praying that ZA gets to keep Lun, Yang and the X-man–would love to keep Mei Lan, too, but she is already scheduled to go to China :-(

  249. Carol (the other one) says:

It’s the big day! I’m so excited for the panda staff!! Can’t wait to see the video later — unfortunately I cannot be there and I’m envious of all who are able to attend.

  250. Shirley Ann says:

Good Day to all Panda Fans,

I am in Montreal, Canada so I will be there in thought and looking forward to the Video.

    All the best,

    Shirley

  251. IHN from Asia says:

    Hello all

The idea of Pandafans Convention actually had come ture in National Zoo three years ago.
A group of pandafans from different states went to join Tai Shan’s 1 year old birthday party held in NZ, it was more likely a pandafans gathering , then the gathering in Tai Shan’s second birthday, a better plan was made, the Director of NZ and Curator Liza Stevens formally joined the gathering .

  252. Lilarose in Oregon says:

#231 Pandafan#2 – I love that you are getting your ears pierced at age 13 (and not at one or two years old)! What a fun thing to look forward to! And a pair of panda earrings is a wonderful idea! Maybe a pendant to go with the earrings? Have fun!

  253. Nelleke says:

I wish I could be there but San Diego is a bit far off.
    11:00 am, that will be 20:00 M.E.T.
I’ll be at my computer with my afterdinner coffee, I don’t want to miss it.

  254. Phyllis says:

    Dearest Moderator,
Thank you SOOOO much for the idea of a section for the Panda Fans Forever group. Although I can’t be there in person, I know you are saving me a virtual seat, so my heart and spirit will be there for sure. Thank you.

What a beautiful idea-an artist’s auction for pandas!!! God Bless You for thinking of it. If it becomes a reality, please let me know, o.k.?

    Widget #137
Friend—You had me laughing out loud this morning like I was a bit crazy. Thanks-I REALLY needed that. Big, Big Hugs to you.

    Catbelly #140
What a beautiful way of expressing what many of us are feeling. Thank you for saying it so well. I will be very proud to be one of the leaves or flowers that gently rustle on this glorious, VERY special day.

    Georgie #149
    Well said Georgie!! HERE!! HERE!!

    DoxieMom #153
What in the world would we do without you and all your knowledge?????? Thanks again for the enlightenment :-)

    Lilarose in Oregon #176
Although a number of people offered their personal opinions as to how Jeslyn should handle her boyfriend, I think you were prompted by a very different set of circumstances. I wish to thank you for being someone who was/is apparently willing to stand up and defend someone who is too weak to defend themselves. Too many people just look the other way. I believe you have probably been a “hero” to more people than you realize.

Now, on to happier things. Enjoy the beauty of today, there is SOOOO much love and joyfulness going around the world today because of a beautiful little creature of God, that I feel like I am filled with sunshine and I hope you do too! :-)

    Liz 202
Thank you so much!!! :-) I can honestly see that beautiful little Zhennie face looking straight at you as if to say “where’s my snackys”!

    Hazel 189
Sorry…but what are you talking about?

  255. Liz says:

Happy naming day, Cubbie! No matter what, you will grow into your name!! You bring so much happiness into our daily lives. I hope you will have a healthy, happy and prosperous panda life, little fellow.

  256. Elisa in Brazil says:

Hi, Little Guy… I’m so excited waiting for your name!

  257. Kammy from HK says:

I can’t attend the naming ceremony too. Hope you all have a great time at the ceremony.

    Ruth (#141) and Jola (#145)

For Fu long’s keepers and fans in Austria who love Fu Long, it’s very difficult to say goodbye to Fu Long . I’ll pray for Fu Long, Yang Yang, Fu Long’s keepers and fans. I guess Fu Long would miss his mummy. I hope the joint efforts of Fu Long’s favourite keeper from Austria and new keepers from China will help Fu Long quickly adapt to his new life in China. I love Fu Long and I will always remember Fu Long as an adorable panda with white toes.

  258. ags says:

Just checking in to wish you all a great naming day!!! Thank you to the moderator and all the panda peeps who give me such a smile every day.
Have fun @ Roly Poly’s ceremony!
He is trying his best to walk at the moment.
Almost as if he is trying to get to his party!
    Viva Roly Poly!

  259. Pam T. says:

I saw the little guy was up this morning getting into shape for his new name today. But all that work was very tireing so a good nap before all the hoop lull was in order. :)

  260. charisse d. says:

I probably missed the information. Is the Naming Ceremony going to be broadcast live as it happens? Like on the pandacam?

Moderator’s note: No, it will not be live on our Web site, but we’ll post a video clip of the ceremony as soon as it becomes available.

  261. Jeri says:

IHN from Asia #251 – We also have had a gathering for Tai at NZ for his second, third and fourth birthdays. For his third birthday we were fortunate to have Dr. JoGayle Howard speak. She is the reproductive scientist at the zoo and performed Mei Xiang’s artificial insemination. This year Tai’s trainer Nicole gave a presentation on training Tai, and we each got a leaf eater biscuit.

  262. Jessie in LR says:

#239 LH – Save me a seat beside you in the VPG (Virtual Panda/Peanut Gallery)! I’ll be wearing the Panda costume my mother made for my third Halloween birthday. Since this is virtual, I’ll have no problem fitting in the costume! Happy naming day to all!!

  263. Mary from Brooklyn says:

    Just a little over 2 hours and counting down….. Excitement builds. . . . .

  264. Ming the Siamese Cat says:

Meow! I love watching the little cubby on my keeper’s computer. I exchange hello waves with the cub and can’t wait until he has a name. Humans aren’t the only fans of my newest friend!

  265. Michelle O in San Joe says:

Lil’ guy doesn’t seem to be too excited about the big day…

  266. Diana S. says:

Good morning all!!! Can’t wait for the big announcement. What an exciting day. Yes, will be sharing the virtual seats with all of you in anticipation.

    # 226 Dianne in TX – Was going to try to go down to San Diego in Jan or Feb too. Christmas was my first choice, but that just isn’t happening. I could also wait until spring, but not much longer. Just can’t wait to see the Baby in person.

Oh my, soon, we will know his new name. Hats on now, confetti ready……..

  267. Ashley says:

When is the ceremony? I will be sitting in my virtual seat! :D I can’t wait to hear what his name is!

Moderator’s note: It starts at 11 a.m. but I’m heading over there now, so won’t be able to moderate any more comments until I return to the office. See you all there, whether in person or in spirit ;-)

  268. celfy says:

Sitting on the edge of my virtual seat. By my reckoning the Cub is 6 mins away from getting his offical name.

  269. Tina in SC says:

We are now to less than one hour….. who besides me… is all twitchy… Oh yeah.. the cub has been all day… it’s like he knows it’s a important day he has been moving around all over since like 6:00 am his time! He even seemed to wake up during Mommy’s morning cleaning session this morning… looking at her as if to say… “HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND.. STOP CLEANING! I GET MY NAME TODAY MOMMY!”

To all my panda NUTS out here in cyber land… I will be sitting right next to you today… in our out little mind seats… I now have my entire office ready for the yelling session that will come out in less than minutes! Our baby is so grown up! Look at his royal rollingness try to move! Just like a little fat baby!

Thank you all for the wonderful comment! I would LOVE TO BE THERE… Anyone know how to get from South Carolina to Southern CA in less than a hour??? I need HELP!!

  270. DMS says:

Times like these make we wish we lived in S. Ca again (…not much else would draw that desire, unfortunately [NO disrespect to S. Ca'ers intended]). Visited the Zoo about a month ago and truly enjoyed the day, of course we enjoyed Panda habitat. This little peanut is the reason we visited even though we knew we would not see him. We visited with his papa and got some memorable pictures and, of course, a stuffed Panda for my little one on the way out. Needless to say I think we have fallen head over heals for this little guy… Can’t wait to learn his new name. Have a GREAT time at the event!!!

  271. Hazel says:

    Good morning everyone …..
like me you will be waiting for the grand announcement of ‘mini Superman’s’ official name, with just under one hour to go I am already sitting in my ‘virtual seat’ – it is getting somewhat crowded so pleased I arrived early.
    # 254 Phyllis
I know you are sitting in your virtual seat – wish I could say hi and explain the comment I made in #189 relating to Mei Sheng (cubbies big brother – now living in China).
Earlier this year a ’senior’ female panda in China mated with ??? (apologies, with all this excitement momentarily I have forgotten the male pandas name!)
Mei Sheng was keen to partake however he was still wearing ‘learner plates’ – the ’senior lady panda’ permitted him to also mate her – hence my question ‘who was the eventual daddy’?
I am certain this was answered in an earlier blog when we were discussing the necessity of dna to determine the cubs father – feel sure the father was not Mei Sheng?
Too much excitement to think straight – will remember the names as soon as I press ’submit’ -
Hope you all have a wonderful time ….. counting down ….

  272. kat w says:

Just curious why SDZ doesn’t use Cam 25 more? It gives us the best view of all the cams, so up close and personal, like right now. The overhead Cam doesn’t even come close. Is there any possibility we can see more from the Cam 25 view?

    Thank you so much.

    Auntie Kat

  273. kat w says:

p.s. not that I’m complaining, just making an observation…Cam 25 gives the feeling you are right there inside the nursery with the baby.

  274. LH says:

    Friendzy!

  275. Sharon says:

Too bad its not live online! :(

  276. cabernet says:

Will we be able to see this? If so, how?

  277. Delia says:

I wish I could come!!! I even painted my nails with pandas in honor of the occasion!!!!

  278. Belle says:

Moderator, when you return, please tell us the name.

  279. Lisa in Maine says:

at 2:08 EST Bai came in, woke up cubbie and told him his new name. It was sweet to see her. She really did look like she was waking him up to whisper in his ear. I am waiting too.

  280. Pat says:

    Sooooooooooooooo what’s his name????????????????????????

  281. Chari Mercier says:

Hi! Just got on my computer after getting my washing straightened out. Will check back for your new update about the cub’s name and video of the ceremony.
Last nite, I was on the pandacam, and I watched Bai and her cub in the den snuggling together. It looked like little fluffy butt was getting some dinner milk, and Bai was sitting there letting him eat. She also did something else while her baby boy was drinking his milk—she was tapping her foot! That was so cute coming from Bai! I haven’t seen her do that before unless I’ve been missing it, but that was another character trait of Bai that I have noticed on her. Then, I checked on the pandacam about an hour later to check on them, and both of them were snuggled together by the den door sleeping. That was sooooooo precious, you all!
Well, gonna go and check on the other pandacams to see what the other US pandas are up to! Will be back in a little bit to see what new name little cubbie received today!

  282. Lee in Vancouver says:

What Timing! At Exactly 11:20 Bai Yun took the little guy out to the garden room to “greet his visitors”. Now the staff can call him by name and he will acknowledge them.

  283. AC in NYC says:

I know there is a lot going on at SDZ right now, very excited. I am in front of my computer at work staring at Mama Bai cuddling and rocking His Royal Cuteness. and no one can make me move away from this the next hour or so. I am with all of you in spirit at SDZ sharing the joy. I dress in black and off white today.

Baby is going to have a name now!!!

  284. Deb says:

Congratulations Fu Sheng on your brand new name! I voted for this name in the naming poll!

  285. Aunt Nancy says:

He’s got a name! FU SHENG-Blissful San Diego!

  286. Isis from Mexico says:

    Viva Fu Sheng!!! :)

  287. Sondra in Snohomish says:

    Sooooooooooo…..what is the name??????

  288. Lisa in Maine says:

Yun Zi is perfect. It was not the name I voted for, but it is his. Bai must be so proud. What a handsome boy!!!

  289. Lisa T. in Rowlett, TX says:

Yun Zi won. I am so excited. While I didn’t submit that name, I did vote for it. Fits Bai Yun’s son perfectly. So nice to have a name to call him instead of precious baby boy!!!

  290. Joan says:

He has been “Yun Zi” to me ever since I voted. I’m so pleased the little guy has a proper name and a very fitting one at that!!

It was a real honour to be able to help choose this guy’s name and I thank the SDZ for allowing us this opportunity.

  291. Jane - Fairfield, VT says:

And they called him “Yun Zi” — I am so happy – that was the name I had voted for! He is now and forever to be called Son of Cloud. Love you – Yun Zi. :)

  292. Simply Sandy says:

I wish I am witnessing the ceremony right now:-). But then, it means skipping school:(. Sorry Munchkin….I am hoping that by the time my class is over, I will be able to know your official name. I can’t wait for it. Oh, I would love to meet this blog’s moderator and everyone involved. Those who are there must be having an amazing experience…..

  293. Pat says:

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! I’m glad he has a name now and that it’s Yun Zi. Thats what I voted for!!!!!
    Thank you for posting it…………..

  294. pandafan-north says:

At 11:29 a.m. SD time, while the ceremony is in progress to bestow our panda prince with his rightful name, the sweetest scene is playing out on the pandacam – our not-so-little plumpkin is nursing, while mama Bai patiently and tenderly encircles him in her arms. He has grown so much (it seems overnight), it hardly looks like the den can still comfortably hold both mama and cub. For those of you who have not had the joy of watching a full-blown nursing session (when the cub actively seeks out all four nipples), I hope you will soon have this wonderful experience. Nothing lowers the blood pressure like watching a panda cub and mother engaged in this ultimate act of life-giving.

Now, his royal plumpness is doing his calisthenics in front of mama – legs and arms flailing in every direction, head bobbing up and down as if to say, “Lemme go, ma, I’m all pumped!!”

  295. Isis from Mexico says:

Wow, in the lapse of 10 minutes at the same TV Station in San Diego, they announced two winner names: Fu Sheng and Yun Zi as the winner… some turmoil of gossip going on right now!

  296. Sue says:

Yes!! The little one has a name..I just heard it on the news that it is Yun Zi!! That is the name I voted for!!

  297. PandahugCanada says:

Oh my, Yun Zi it is, and what a lovely tie-in with his beautiful Momma. Love you little Yun Zi, you’re quite the boy….XOXOXo

  298. Teresa says:

    Hello to Yun Zi.
I love that name and it honors his wonderful mother. I love watching the panda cam and seeing how well Bai Yun takes care of Yun Zi. Thank you to all the moderator’s who keep us well informed about all our beautiful pandas

  300. Kelly says:

He seems to be crawling!!!! Yeah!!

  301. Aunt Nancy says:

I’m sorry. I got that info off the “Just Fans” section of the San Diego Zoo’s Facebook! I should not have assumed that Sharon Owens Lower was probably in the audience and been the first to post this from her phone. Why anyone would do something like this is beyond me. But, I’m sooo sorry for being part of it.

By the way his name is Yun Zi, which means “son of cloud.” I like that better, anyway.

  302. Sharon says:

    Hugs to Yun Zi :)

  303. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

I looked at the Panda Cub Milestones and found the name to be Yun Zi. You do not know how happy I am. For once in my lifetime I picked something (this time a name for a Panda and it was picked). Yeah for the little fella. Next time he is examined, throw him a kiss for me.

  304. Kathy Miller-Hicks says:

Congratulations to our newly named cubbie….after having passed the 100 day mark, he now has a long and bamboo filled future waiting for him! His beautiful, loving mother Bai has always produced healthy, adorable cubs…I have watched her rear four perfect babies….Mei Sheng was my first cub and what a joy he was to watch! Videos of his exams were often just hilarious as he showed off his multi-faceted personality….sometimes grouchy and other times, silly, playful and adorable…I recall the first time he covered his eyes with his liitle paws. What an amazing behavior! Once, I was watching the cam at 130am
and I was lucky enough to catch a wrestling bout between mom and baby… Mei Sheng was up on the sleeping platform in Bai’s bedroom and Mom was sitting on the floor, eye to eye with her first son, actually shadow boxing and rolling him around…another behavior I never expected to see…I think most bear mothers take excellent care of their kids….the funniest thing I remember was one of Mei Sheng’s adventures in the trees…My husband and I were watching mom and Sheng around 5pm here and that is close to feeding time…Mom, of course was very motivated to leave the enclosure so that the keepers could put out her beloved ‘boo din din…first, though, she had to help get her son out of the tree…she reached out for him on one of the lower branches but Mei Sheng scampered up the tree, out Mom’s reach…well, a few minutes later he climbed to a height he wasn’t quite able to handle…soon enough, the little dear was falling out of the tree! and he was pretty far up in that tree…we all gasped as he tumbled through the branches until he bounced off of Bai’s back and landed with a thud on the ground..within seconds, he wobbled onto his feet and tottered off after Mom…the narrator “scolded” us in good humor..”I told you guys NOT to gasp if he falls….:)

And so, I send my fondest wishes to Yun Zi, Bai Yun’s second son…I have to be honest…I voted for Xiao Long as I thought it fit him well…but I know his new name will grow on me in time..for now though I’ll call him Sunny, to honor the ’son’ part of his name, in my own effort to honor him with his own special nickname….just for me….

  309. Mary Jo says:

Hi, I surely wish I could have been there. However, my vote was for Fu Sheng (Blissful San Diego). Why? My parents were married there. I was out shopping after I heard about the new Panda and came upon a sale of darling stuffed Pandas at Borders. Of course, I had to have one.

I hope Zinn Li (sp) has a very long and healthy life.

  310. Jennie in So Cal says:

I admit I didn’t vote for Yun Zi, but it’s a nice name and I suppose it fits him. I will still always call him Butter, but now I call him Butter Yun. :)

  311. I love panda says:

    I love panda :*)

  312. Panda Diva says:

Congratulations Bai Yun of the naming of your son Yun Zi! Son Of Cloud. I remember when you were a year old I came to San Diego for a class reunion. Your Mom was protective by pushing you back into the bushes. All you wanted to do is come out and see all the human fans that were there to see you. I could have stood there all day and watched you. I’ve been a panda fan for many years when my little brother bought me a panda necklace. I have a big curio cabinet with all my collectables. My newest one is a tiny china tea set with it’s own basket. I love it. Grow big and healthy little man…i’ll be keeping up with all the stories and videos of you. I could talk all day…..=-)
