Panda with Cute-itude
Posted at 3:34 pm November 12, 2009 by Jenny Mehlow
Dr. Amanda White helps examine his royal cuteness!
But now I can tell you stories about a panda, as if he were my own. Sure, I didn’t get to hold him or touch him, or even get close enough for his eyes to focus on me. But sitting in on the 11th exam of our panda cub was a great experience!
When Lead Keeper Lisa Martin carried him out of the den, he had bits of bamboo from the nest. I immediately had the urge to brush him off. He laid on the table, flat like a pancake, with his paws out forward and just looked around with long, endearing blinks.
Vets started by checking his eyes first with a penlight. Then they moved on to his teeth. That was the first milestone for the exam – he cut his first two teeth! His canines were very noticeable and looked good. Dr. Beth Bicknese finished checking his tonsils, his glands, and his belly.
Ah, his belly. Yes, it’s as pudgy as it looks in the pictures and even cuter in person.
About this time, baby started waking up with a big yawn that showed us those first two teeth, shiny and white. Then he started flexing his muscles, held himself up, and was tracking Ken Bohn, our photographer, with his little panda eyes.
I got to hear the panda “squeek” as vets checked his muscles, his bones, his paws. They checked each paw and a thorough inspection of his tail – with the black dot at the end.
Then, I watched as the cub walked across the table until he had to be picked up by a vet before he reached the edge. Gaylene Thomas, animal care supervisor, mentioned that this was the most he’d ever walked during an exam! I also listened as vets and animal care staff commented about how he’s showing more personality these days, showing some independence, and hinting that he will be sure to let everyone know just what he wants and how he feels.
Because he was so wiggly, there are a few non-critical measurements that weren’t taken down because he just didn’t want to sit still. And then, sitting on the exam table, between measurements, he barked!
It was just like the sound I’d expect from a small dog. Not like a Chihuahua, though. Maybe more like a terrier? Again, I’m a cat person, but it surprised all of us in the room, and we were delighted by his vocalization and more proof that the usually slow-moving, roly-poly cub has real personality potential.
Then all too quickly, the measurements were done, the exam was over, and it was time to return the cub to Bai Yun.
I have lived for more than 30 years without a panda in my life until I got my job at the San Diego Zoo. And now, after witnessing my first panda exam, I think my “panda lady” tendencies might be surfacing, too.
Jenny Mehlow is a public relations representative for the San Diego Zoo.
Note: The cub weighed 12.5 pounds (5.7 kilograms) and was 24 inches (61 centimeters) long.
Watch a video of the 11th exam.

Tomorrow he is 100 days old! Hurray!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Look at that face, that smile! I can’t wait to see the video, he’s got two teeth, he walked and he barked..! And in a few more days he will have a name!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Chubby is adorable!!! Why does it seem like whenever he tries to crawl toward the den door, Mama rolls him back inside?? Doesn’t she want him to be out there yet? Sometimes she watches him try, but then she doesn’t let him get out the door. Very curious.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I think the new cub is going to look like Gao Gao with that cute little Gao Gao face!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Such a cute picture and 12.5 lbs.!!! Cannot wait for the video!!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I have been waiting for this exam all week… I can’t believe how fast he is growing! What a handsome little boy! Can’t wait for his name. Great job caretakers and VET’s. I too am waiting patiently for the video.
Moderator’s note: It’s now on our home page.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
A big day tomorrow! He is becoming such a handsome little guy. Those little fat legs are the cutest, I just want to squeeze him!! I am confident our little ’son of Cloud’ will be given a proper name. I’m counting down the days!!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
I envy you being able to sit in on the exam. What a special thing to be able to witness!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Wecome to the “panda lady” tendencies club. My co-workers are so sick of me already!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
This is my first opportunity to watch a panda from birth on a daily basis! I look forward to seeing him every morning and checking on him before I go to bed. He’s darling and getting sweeter every day. Thank you so much for giving us a glimpse into their lives.
Bai Yun is such a great mother! I love it when she brings bamboo in and stirs everything up! She’s simply the best!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
It made me smile to see him bark at the staff! Sure shows his little strong will!
November 12th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
I got news from China panda staff, the little cub is probably to be named Fu Sheng.
Moderator’s note: Hmmmmmmmmm.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
if it already pre-determined by China goverment , what use to vote!!!!
Moderator’s note: Remember, China approved the list of five names, but voters worldwide determined the results.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
I WANT TO TOUCH HIM
November 12th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Mods In the wild who is their predators???
Moderator’s note: Read the post Highly Motivated.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Well maybe he can join his sister ZZ Top and they can perform a humming and barking vocalization group…100 days old and soon to be named and addictive to watch his every move….And use that dipped paint brush tail a true charmer and what has helped my wife recover in the Hospital with hopes of having a follow up Doctor’s Appointment with her SoCal main Doctor and a trip to see the Prince of hearts in person as we’ve seen all his relatives and want to see Lin Lin before she departs us to join her older step sister and brother in China….Keep up the great work SDZ and Meercats for your camera work…..
November 12th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I fall in love with him everytime I see him!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
What a great video. Baby is so cute. I loved when he “barked” and all the little sounds he made. Loved the pictures of the exam also. It is amazing how much this little guy can make you feel good every time you see him. Can’t help but smile when watching him. Just wondering–how long does the actual exam take? As always, thank you for keeping us informed and updated with him. Can’t wait to find out his name.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Like other writers, would love to touch him and love him.
Do panda’s ever have twins?
That little bark was so in control and don’t mess with me.
love him

November 12th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
He was all boy in this exam, very mischevious! I too have total Panda Lady instincts, don’t even get me started on cat lady instincts! I truly treasure this web site, I have learned so much and hold every panda dear to my heart. Thanks, as always, SDZ, for all you give us.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
A little off topic, but for panda junkies if you go to pawnation website they have article and pic on following.
“Researchers in China recently made an exciting (and adorable) discovery when they found a brown giant-panda cub.”
It was found on the Foping Giant Panda Reserve.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
I know exactly how you feel, as a regular to the exhibit I feel as if all of Bai’s cubs are my own too.
It’s sounds crazy but love will do that to you.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
OMG – he is adorable! That black dot on the tail, those teeth, that pudgy belly, those bright eyes, that bark! I am in love
Thanks for showing the footage of him being picked up and carried out of the den – you really get a feeling for the density of him
In the Mayan community where I do research in Mexico, they have an expression for the arrival of the soul, the process by which an infant begins to more fully communicate and engage socially and emotionally with those around him/her. Well, the baby’s soul has definitely arrived – and how cute it is!!! He is definitely ready for his name
November 12th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
I just watched The Big Guy’s exam and what a wiggly boy he is!!!! I just figured out why. He was told his name and he’s very excited about it. I can’t wait until Tuesday to find out his name. He is growing so fast and gaining such strength. His “cute-tude” is endearing. All the SDZ people were having so much fun.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Awww this is cutest exam video ever~ he does seem very active now and he certainly is vocal (what a bark!) I check up on him 2 or 3 times a day when I could, Bai Yun is doing such a good job at taking care of him. Thank you panda team for your hard work =)
November 12th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Will the latest exam be put on the regular video link so that we can watch it full screen? It’s wonderful to see Cubby growing up, and his bark is darling.
Moderator’s note: Yes, it’s there now.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
He is so adorable! What a wonderful ball of fluff he is. I loved the bark. I knew he would not stay mellow forever. I think he has plans to be a very spunky guy! And very curious. Bai is in for some work! I love his beautiful teeth and what an amazing amount of strong steps he took trying to get across the table. He really put all his strength into it. Once he figures it out he is going to be running like crazy! I think he is desperately trying to reach 13 pounds by his naming day! 13 is a good luck number in China.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
If there’s a panda lady society (like the red hat society–only for ladies who love pandas), sign me up!! I think His Royal Cuteness is totally awesome!!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
no the cub is not hundred days 2morow NEXT tuesday the 17th
Moderator’s note: The cub is indeed 100 days old on November 13 but his naming ceremony will be held on November 17.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Emma, my daughter, went nuts over the videos and enjoyed hearing about your experience with the cub! I loved his little bark! Very terrier-like!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Awe….now Jenny’s got the panda bug….Thanks for the sweet story of today’s exam. He barked! I’ve got to hear this one! My co-workers used to harass me about the constant panda cam in the upper corner of my computer, the occasional cooing over such cuteness, but you know, they’ve all come around to appreciating them too (well, the girls, anyway) How can you resist?…
now on to the video of today’s exam….anticipating bark……
Thank you.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Thanks for the behind the scenes glance. This video is the best yet! Kudos SDZ!!
November 12th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
What a good bark. It sounded like a roar to me a good sound for the little dragon. Thank you for all the hard work SDZ
November 12th, 2009 at 5:54 pm
What a well written article! I could not stand it, I think I would grab him and run although it looks and sounds like he could and would put up a fight! What a cute little bark, he sure is getting his own personality. No wonder Bai is starting to bat him around and play rough with him. She is letting him know who the boss is. How cute and thanks again for the great video, story and pics! Can’t wait to see the name chosen for him…today little dragon seems fitting……I can tell each person in that room just wanted to cuddle him! It is obvious.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Is the naming ceremony going live on the 11 AM local news stations? I can’t be there but can turn on a t-v to view it. I really don’t want to wait until later learn how it all went!
Moderator’s note: Media are usually invited to such events, but it just depends on their schedules and what else is happening that day. But we’ll be posting his name and a video clip of the ceremony soon after. So much suspense these days!
November 12th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Oh my Jenny – what a day you had – your description was so vivid – felt like I was there
The video is too cute for words – our Royal Plumpness sure has a personality now. Poor mamma Bai is going to have her paws full shortly

#24 Linda – well, you took the words right out of my mouth
Hard to believe he’s 100 days old in a few hours
November 12th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
is it just me, or does anyone out there in pandaland tear up when he looks directly into the camera???
i remember his big bro, mei sheng so well, and know son of cloud will be a big guy too soon.
thanks, panda team.
he still seems very mellow, bark or no bark.
hugs to the lil guy.
joan
painted post, n.y.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
I wonder if baby surprised himself with the bark?! Is this his first bark that you know of?
When he was being removed from the nursery, it looked much smaller than the view via cam. Didn’t even look
like momma would fit in there along with him…
I wonder if he is the first ever panda with a beauty mark on the tip of his tail…
Whadda beauty alright! I think I will record that bark for my ring tone…..make people wonder.
Thank you, Panda People (SDZ)
November 12th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Am I the only one who can see the small video of the 11th exam on the home page site, but not on the video gallery???
November 12th, 2009 at 6:11 pm
Thanks, it’s there now!! All the cuter in full screen.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
I loved the cubs bark. Bai Yun has her hands full with this one. He is just too cute. He is very wiggly too.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
#29 Panda Fan – Yes to the panda lady society (like the red hat society) – only we get to wear black and white hats, and black and white dresses (instead of purple dresses)!
What a character he’s growing into! Thanks for the quick glimpse of Lisa putting him on the scale in the bedroom.
And, last but not least (just a little early!):
Happy 100 days! (I’d insert the official name, but don’t have it yet!)
November 12th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
I’ve read many comments from people asking what the cubbie sounds like. Moderator, did you bypass the Panda Research Team and go directly to the source and ask him to speak up for his adoring public? Hmmmmm? If so, it worked! Just when we think he can’t get any cuter…
I love to see the interaction between the cub and staff. I seem to remember Keeper Lisa had a special bond with Mei Sheng and accompanied him to China. I thought it was neat to see her get him out of the den and bring him in for the exam. All in the family!
Moderator’s note: I sure wish I could take credit for his bark, but I’m so glad our wonderful videographer was there to catch it for us!
November 12th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Thank you for the video! I can’t wait to watch them every week. I did not know that Panda’s barked! But, he did! Can’t wait to find out his name:)
November 12th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Aww, what a cute bark! Reminds me of one of the (many) dogs that live in my neighborhood. What were the genders of Hua Mei’s 7 kids? The reason I asked for how old Shi Shi was, was because I got a DVD of the SD zoo, made in 1997, when Bai was 5. I am trying to figure out how old Shi Shi was when Bai was 5.
Moderator’s note: We never had an exact age on Shi Shi, as he was born in the wild and did not become part of China’s panda program until he was an adult.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
Plumpers has attitude!
November 12th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Interesting to check over some of the ” Milestones” of your other pandas
Su Lin had teeth at 50 days – much earlier than all the other cubs. Another milestone that might have been cute to follow (yep, we know the staff & keepers have nothing else to do) But I bet you are keeping track of it- when a cubs ears stand up & begin to look like Mickey Mouse
It was probably the camera angle but from last week’s exam to this week – the cubs ears look like they are now standing up & seem much larger
Daddy Yang (ZA) has HUGE ears – with all the measurements you try to get (until cubs get too squirmy) I wonder if that was one
November 12th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
omg!!!!!!!!!! the bark!! high larry us!! what a whipper snapper!!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
To Ruth in Austria – I saw the saddest picture today of Fu Long in a crate today – obviously the staff is trying to get him ready for his return to China
I just wonder what the the feeling in Austria is as this adorable panda is taken from his mother & transported back to China.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Out of interest why if the cub is 100 days old on the 13th the naming ceremony isn’t the? I always believed that was the tradition.
Moderator’s note: If you check out our Panda Cub Milestones page you may be amused to see that only Su Lin received her name at 100 days!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Thank you Jenny for sharing your experience with our handsome adoreable little man…………….
I envy you just being in the room with him…..
Well, his sister Zhen Zhen is a hummer, and we now have a barker. LOL……
He is just so adoreable………..so adoreable……………
November 12th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
These videos are the best. Thanks so much to all who help bring them to us! Cubbie is so adorable and fun to watch. We are off to San Diego tomorrow to surprise my Mom for her 70th birthday (tomorrow). Unfortunately we have to return before the big naming day.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
…..and on the 100th day, the cub was named Pumpkin Head. Heard the cute nickname said during the exam today. Too cute!
November 12th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Oh, Jenny, how wonderful for you to have had a panda in your life today. Thousands of us envy you like crazy!!
That bark was the first such noise I’ve seen in a veterinary exam of a San Diego Zoo panda cub. I watched every one of Mei Sheng’s exams, over and over, and quite a few of Su Lin’s, but family considerations have kept me away from home a lot for the last few years and I missed Zhen Zhen’s babyhood. I’m making up for it now with Chubby Cubby and can hardly wait to find out what his “grown up” name is. Thanks so much for everything you’ve told us today, Jenny. And I’m sure Austin won’t mind you having a panda in your life.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Oh he is adorable!!!!!! He was trying to walk wow!! Great name for the blog! He has a cute-itude aditude!!
LOL!
November 12th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
#27 Shirley: The link at the end of this blog takes you to the video, but it doesn’t yet show up when you look at the Panda Video Gallery. At least, I’m not finding it this evening.
I thought of trying to color panda markings on my Bichons for Halloween, but I couldn’t figure out what would be safe for them. They have short “puppy” cuts so it would look pretty cute. Maybe I’ll just have to Photoshop it on for fantasy pictures. (Of course, they are cute even in all white.)
Moderator’s note: We’ll add it on Friday. But in the meantime, just click on the “San Diego Zoo” tab in the video gallery and you’ll see it.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
He looked like he was determined to get out and explore – he was trying to walk off the edge of the exam table! He was a wrigglebum as a baby – what’s he going to be like as a toddler? Poor Bai will have her work cut out for her.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Ah, in those still photos he just looks so innocent! A happy baby all bright and sparkling and secure. I like Photo #3. That’s a keeper!
Dear Fu Long is ready not only to leave his mama, but to leave Vienna for China. As I understand it, Vienna doesn’t have enough space for three pandas, which is why he’s leaving now, and why there is no gradual weaning process as in San Diego. What a trauma for the little guy.
Interestingly, the Vienna website has info (in German) about their pandas, and also about ours and Lin Bing in Thailand. They’ve been following news of all the pandas. They even have video of Zhennie and Su Lin at the Howdy Gate.
Godspeed to Fu Long. May his new life be exciting and eventually fruitful. Too bad he couldn’t come here. He and Zhennie are only three weeks apart in age.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
OK, I surrender. I never was much of a panda watcher until shortly before the Prince of Adorable was born. Every week he gets cuter, but this past week his personality seems to be really coming to the fore (crawling/falling out of the den, trying to get all four legs to work in sync, kicking mommie in the face, climbing her head, etc.) And now you show me this video! I give up,already. I am totally in love. I’m even ready to join the Crazy Panda Ladies club. Yes, I, too, am a cat lady, but now I am a Polar, Panda, Elephant, Cat Lady. Thank you to the very busy panda staff for all the blogs, and a special thanks to the camera operators for following the little guy on his journeys. Thanks, also, for showing Lisa taking him from the den for this exam. See there? I even know the names of the keepers and narrators. I have really got a bad case of Pandaholism. I hope I never recover.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
OMG, this is too much for my heart, he’s too adorable! I am truly green with envy of you guys, that get to see him in person and be in the same room with him…. I so want to be you! But I’ll leave vicariously thru all the staff of the SDZ… (but let me know if there’s an opening, I’ll drop everything!)
Now, can someone refresh my memory and tell me again what Fu Sheng means? I forgot! And what does Mei Sheng mean? That’s his brother, right? I want him to be Son of Cloud…
Good night, beautiful, adorable incredibly miraculous chubby boy!
Good night, Bai!
Moderator’s note: Fu Sheng means “blissful San Diego.” The other pandas’ names and their meanings can be found on our Meet the Pandas page.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
I didn’t know the cub could walk already! Thanks for the info.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:35 am
He certainly is looking very very bright. His eyes are gorgeous and I know he wanted to eat that blanket! Did Bai hear him bark? If she did, was she concerned at all?
Aaah, another cat lover, Jenny. Those of us on here with cats could natter for hours about the silly things our pets do (and the lovely things too, of course). And the dog owners too – and any other pets anyone has. If I don’t mention everyone, there will be howls of protest and I’ll be in the dog(cat)house.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:25 am
PandaFan#2 – #46 – Hua Mei’s seven cubs are as follows:
2004 – Mei Ling (male), Tuan Tuan (male)
2005 – Wei Wei (male), Ting Ting (female)
2007 – Hua Long (male), Hua Ao (male, my adopted cub)
2009 – Hao Hao (female)
November 13th, 2009 at 3:31 am
Did you see how much all the ladies at the vet exam surreptitiously snuggled him? And in between did some vet type stuff….
November 13th, 2009 at 3:37 am
It is so great to read theese blogs about His Royal Cuteness, thanks a lot!
Only problem is that the text can be read very well on iPod but the photos and videos are not possible to watch.
Dear Moderator, is there any improvement taking place in the future about this?
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Web Team.
November 13th, 2009 at 4:18 am
Our wish is their command!
We can now purchase meals for our other beautiful pandas on the Wish List.
Thanks SDZ!!
Moderator’s note: Our pleasure! For others interested, here’s our November Wish List.
November 13th, 2009 at 4:33 am
What a adorable little bark, he wants to make sure the staff knows who is in charge and that they work for him. I hope little Fu Long makes the transition without a lot of stress. As much as we all hate the dreaded weaning and separation at 18 months or so it should make the transition for our US kids when they do go back to China a little easier. One tramautic event instead of two.
November 13th, 2009 at 5:53 am
Ahhhh, just makes ya wanta to give him a big ole “bear hug!”
November 13th, 2009 at 5:54 am
Happy 100 days baby!!! My family and I are going to bake a black and white cake for you and sing “Happy 100 days Mr. Cubbie” for you today. Love ya babe!
November 13th, 2009 at 6:50 am
I don’t believe that the cub’s name is pre-determined by China goverment, SDZ doesn’t have to fool the panda lovers out there if this is the case , they just give the cubby a name at their own discretion as they did to Hua Mei and Mei Sheng.
The privilege of naming panda cubs in Wolong and Chengdu breeding centres are also offered to those who adopt the panda cubs, I can’t see any reasons why SDZ doesn’t have this privilege.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:00 am
Claire #51 — It’s not uncommon in a society with high infant mortality for naming to be delayed as much as a year, till parents, sibs, etc. feel the baby is really “here,” and worth the investment of acknowledgement, emontional bonding, etc. Apparently in China, even as infant mortality waned, the custom continued even for the bears.
Joan #39 — It’s not just you. The Mother Baby relationship has brought me many tender tears. I, myself, feel mothered as I watch these intimate interchaganges. It seems to me a nonsectarian form of grace to be a part of this, even as a voyeur.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:14 am
I just loved this story. You made me feel like I was in the room with you the whole time. I love the baby chubby panda, even more, if that’s possible. Could you really love this baby more and more everytime you see him? YES!! He is getting so big and I just love the sounds he makes. I wish I could hug him and squeeze him. I show my sister the videos of his exam, and she just thinks he’s adorable. All of you that work with the pandas are very lucky to have the experience that you do. Good job.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Hi Little Guy,
Happy 100th day!
November 13th, 2009 at 7:22 am

November 13th, 2009 at 7:24 am
We love him!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Will there be a November wallpaper coming out soon?
Moderator’s note: Yes, soon.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:36 am
Funny thing about panda and cat lovers cos the Chinese name for pandas is bear cat. Hee hee.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:20 am
Dearest Little One,
As I see you lying there asleep yet kicking away, I wonder in my heart what my little cloud warrior is dreaming about. Are you having visions of being a brave Panda fighter like our distant relative Po or a strong resilient hero like your Papa?
Whatever it is, dear heart, know this one thing, Mama loves you and is proud of you. I hope you will grow up to be trustworthy, faithful and loyal. I can see you have your father’s good looks but I hope, Son, you will be humble and respected. A good name is more important than fame.
Mama has tried to provide for you, dear one. I hope that you will make use of all that you have to be a blessing to our own and to the humans. What Mama and Papa most wish is that you will give us many grand children.
There are many moments in the last 90 days or so that Mama has sat here watching over you, loving you, praying for you. My son know this one thing, you are special.
To my dear heart with smiles,
Mama Bai

I am wondering more about the naming ceremony. How long will it take and what will it entail? I have Tuesday off work, and I want to go. Just because its a once in a lifetime experience (for this baby anyway) and I’ve been following him daily since he was born, and driving my facebook friends nuts with pictures of him every day!!!
Thanks.
Moderator’s note: The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. with an introduction by Doug Myers, our chief executive officer. There will be remarks made by the Chinese Consulate representative, the co-head of the Zoo’s Giant Panda Team, and the president of the Zoological Society of San Diego. By 11:20, the cub’s name will be revealed!

Thank you Jenny ! I loved that little “Bark” he let out. That was adorable. Just a side note, since you are a cat person. My cat barks at me when he wants attention and wants to play. Actually quite loudly like our little panda man. Thanx again Jenny !
November 13th, 2009 at 8:40 am
Ohhhh Jenny! Great writing! Yes, we all would wish to be in your shoes and my goodness, the way you told of your visit, we all beileved we had been
Each video is better than the previous! Loved the “Bark!”
I can’t wait to sit in front of my screen and use my video camera to film the exam and the BARK! Thank you SDZ for all you do!
We also love to participate in finding possible names for Panda Bears
My little dog sounds quite similar when he only utters a single “Bark!” Alas, he rarely uses a single sound when expressing his opinions

Moderator,
Thanks for adding the entire Yun-Gao’s to the wish list. Question…Why is there no quantity listed for Gao Gao, Su Lin and Zhen Zhen’s boo quantity, yet Bai has ‘15′ needed? Also, yesterday there were only 8 plants needed for the home renovation for cubbie. However today, there are ‘51 needed’. Just thought I would bring it to your attention.
Mama has been spending some quality time with baby boy this morning! Such a beautiful sight!
Moderator’s note: I will forward your questions to the Wish List Team.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:53 am
#64 — Interesting that three of Hua Mei’s seven cubs have part of their mother’s name — that seemed to present a problem for SDZ staff who decided that Gao Yun should not be on the short list. I hope the reported name Fu Sheng is not the one and that voters decided to honor his mother, Bai Yun, who made all this possible by voting for Yun Zi.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Bai Yun and Mr. Knockumdead cute are sleeping so sound next to each other in the birthing den right now, how special they look!!!!!! Do you think he really barked because he wanted to go back to the den or do you think he might have barked because he was enjoying the attention from the familiar faces?
November 13th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Pandas are supposed to be named on their 100th day for good luck. How ironic that his falls on Friday the 13th. Good idea to wait so we don’t mess up his mojo. Panda With Two Teeth (his Native American name) deserves to start out life on a good vibe.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:05 am
question: being in the room with our little prince how could you not beg them to touch him just once? you could tell us lovers of this little fella just how he feels. He just looks so cuddly. His bark was just the cutest, I played it over and over again. ok, I’m addicted to this little guy.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:05 am
The little one walked to the doorway of the den and I thought he was going to walk out, but he seems to be just observing for now. I was trying to coax him to go out into the light, but looks like it’s not to be…just yet.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Cute-itude is sunning himself in the door of his den. Stirring a bit, clearly with thoughts of going out but not quite certain about the effort. What a life! He must have done something good in the last one to come back as a SDZ cubbie. I loved watching all the team getting in their little snuggles. And loved the inside look at what it feels like to be a spectator. I guess we are mostly women on this blog, but my husband is smitten, too. He just doesn’t write. Last night, Bai was sleeping a bit away from the little cloud (a foot or so?). She moved her head just a smidge so it was touching him. So gentle and loving, Mama Bai. I think she is a happy panda.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:22 am
#71 IHN — that’s why my nickname for Hua Mei’s new cub is Qi Qi. Am sure she’ll be officially Hao Hao again, unless I can scare up the other 45K to adopt her for life and that is absolutely wishful thinking!
Son of Cloud (as proclaimed by my Chinese neighbors) is getting so cute and alert. I guess this bark was not occasioned by a shot. Remember that one well.
Thanks guys again for all your good work with our fuzzy companions. Wish you a good weekend everybody.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Happy 100th day, Mr. Royal Cuteness! A little while ago Bai was watching him trying to walk. She just sat there staring at him in wonder. But he wasn’t getting too far, so she finally gave up waiting and walked over him and out of the den. He watched her leave and then took a few steps. He is soaking his head in the sun, but that little hill and that BIG drop…oh, just so scary. Naptime and wait for Mommy to come back. I keep thinking how children learn to go downstairs backward and am waiting for him to figure it out and back out of the den instead of trying to go forward! Any day now!!
Moderator’s note: Just to clarify: there is no drop from the den door to the bedroom. The den is flat on the floor.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Great article about our favorite cutie with attitude! Thanks.
Heads Up! At Memphis Zoo, the conservation research dept. has discovered a test, by which they can determine if a panda’s pregnancy is pseudo or for real. YAY! You should check it out. Click on Conservation News. This is great….right?
November 13th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Thank you for the new up date on his 11th. examine. What a cutie he is, Today watching the video of his examine, that is the most I have seen him move around, he is getting so big, I can’t waite to see him in December when I come to visit my daughter. She has been telling me about the gorilla’s, but my heart is set on just the baby panda, he was born the day before I arrived to San Diego on my first visit to see my daughter. She just enjoys working at the zoo. And I really enjoy reading and watching every thing about the baby panda. And I can’t waite to see what his new name will be. Thank you, you all are doing a great job sharing all the great news about him to us.

Gosh, he’s so darn cute! I miss the panda cam!!! Waaaaaaa!!! (I’m cut off!)

Hi Dennis and Lynn, Thank you for keeping us up an Lynn’s progress. I don’t think I couldn’t handle staying in the hospital as long as Lynn. Every time I see your post I say a little prayer for you and appreciate all of your posts. Keep up the contact with us. I look forward to hearing you are at the SDZ!
I love to see the little black spot on ( cloud’s ? ) little tail. He is so beautiful and like all of you I really want to hug him and would’t it be fun is he hugged us back? I hope he will stay with us for a very long time. what a funny bark, sounds just like my Maltese who is now smaller than our cubby.
To moderator, thanks for the wishes you shouted out to me re: my grandson. Made me feel part of the family.

I agree with Fonsia #59–picture #3 is outstanding. He looks innocent, yet confident, wise, yet humble. He could sell you a used bit of bamboo (instead of a car) or run for office with that photo.

Some content is device specific. There isn’t a lot we can do about this.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
I second what #73 said. Your writing is so descriptive that it made me feel as if I was right in the room with you. It was obviously written through the eyes of love – a love that we all share. I want in on that “panda lady society” too. Hugs from Sacramento, CA.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
To all at the SDZ ,
Thank you beyond words for making us all part of this beautiful experience.
To our “little man”
Baby, you are soooo loved and you have just begun. I have seen it in your eyes since they first opened. You are mellow yes, but you will pick your battles and you will win. You are everything good that your proud parents could give you and you will do great things. I hope I someday get to look into your beautiful eyes so you will read what is in mine…no words will be needed; you will hear my heart. I love you baby bear…Aunt Phyllis XXXXXXXX OOOOOOOOO

Jenny, what a wonderfully descriptive post to go with the enchanting video of this precious cub’s 11th exam! From Lisa pulling him from his slumber in the den, to him being weighed on the ‘big-panda’ scale, to his 2 teeth, to his tail spot, and especially the ‘bark’, you were so lucky to witness this exam! Thank you SDZ!
In honor of Bai and her cub’s 100th day, I did a YouTube video slideshow of my most memorable and favorite screen images captured since August 5th. I hope you enjoy this walk down memory lane! The link is:

Moderator’s note: What a wonderful collection of screen shots! Thank you for sharing them.

Moderator, the quantities have been added for the Yun-Gao’s bamboo now. I must have looked at the web page before they enter the amounts.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Thanks to #64!!!!!!!!!! Hua Mei is all grown up now! Happy 100th day to Napping Bear!!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
If I got out of love with you ladies at the zoo, I apologize. Thanks for all you do taking excellent care of Big Boy and his family.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Love the new video of our precious baby boy.
It seems that cubbie would be able to ambulate more in the den (and hopefully out of the den) if such a slick surface would not have been put down, when the den was cleaned by the zoo. I see him slip sliding all the time, with all fours going out from underneath him. I don’t think he’s quite aware that he can use his toe nails, to grab the surface to walk forward. No matter how much bamboo Momma puts in the den, the slick surface seems to find it’s way to the top. Don’t you agree with me, keepers?
Not trying to sound like a know it all here, since I could never understand all the hard work you all do, but just thought I would make an observation.
Thank you again for a fantastic view into the cubbie’s exam’s. We are so lucky, indeed.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
#100 DoxieMom – Thank you. I’ve saved this to my email account as it’s something I will watch over and over again.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Jenny, what a great post, thank you. And the video is wonderful! It’s great to see Chubby Cub showing his personality – loved the bark.
I’m looking forward to his naming day.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
#65 beakerj – I noticed that too – I believe the technical term for it is “palpate”
Happy 100th Day to Baby and Bai Yun!!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Doxiemom you truly out did yourself. So much so that I would like to address SDZ marketing dept. I believe it would be in your best intrest to enter into a contract with Doxiemom and make a cute photo album. Can you imagine how many people from around the world would love to purchase this album. The paper could be made from what you do with their poop to make paper. The sales would benifit the bears. I’d think about if I were you. Then down the road there could be Part 2, part 3 etc.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
#75 – liz ‘panda stalker’ smith – ???? no idea what you mean
#100 – DoxieMom – many thanks for taking the time to provide us with that wonderful recap of His Royal Plumpness – we could bee him changing every day
November 13th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Did you notice how BIG this boy is getting? This afternoon he was lying on his side in the middle of the den, and I could not believe how much of the den he takes up. There is barely room inside for both he and Bai anymore. No wonder she prefers to nap on the shelf in the Garden Room. Obviously a well fed and nourished boy!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
many thanks to doxiemom for the wonderful and touching trip down memory lane
November 13th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
#100, DoxieMom – thanks for a great trip down memory lane. It is hard to believe he is 100 days old already, and growing bigger and stronger by the minute. If memory serves me correctly, it won’t be long before Bai decides it is time for him to take up residence outside the den and no longer in it. Then the crawling becomes walking, then running and climbing. Then, somewhat sadly, the long days napping in the tree where he will be hard to see. Oh the many stages and milestones in the life of healthy panda cub.
November 13th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
DoxieMom # 100: Beautiful!!!! Thank you!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I was just watching DoxieMom’s videos taken from Oct 12 Panda Cam shots of cub’s 5,4,and 3 (baby, ZZ, and Su Lin). It appears that there is no more of the grass left in the two front exhibits that was planted in the spring. These girls have been really hard on their habitat for sure. No wonder you need to do so much with the husbandry crew, and why the rotation is good for vegetation and enrichment for the pandas.
November 13th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Bai Yun is such a wonderful, playful, *and* beautiful mom! I just saw her carrying Mr. Bruiser out of the den, and he was feeding in her arms for a while. Now she is holding Mr. Bruiser upside down while he tries to squirm and wiggle out of mom’s cuddly embrace. Oh yes, the sight of a mom holding a baby in her arms is precious and priceless!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Oh jeez, I couldn’t be more in love if I tried!!! This little boy has my heart completely. Mind you, he’s sharing it with the rest of my furry family (a wolf, a husky and a cat). I loved your post, and all the details were wonderful! And I especially liked the beginning of the video watching Mr. Adorable being pulled out of the den. He certainly is one huge little boy and watching Lisa try to manage him, one gets the sense of his “big”-ness. Oh much too cute for words!
And what can I say about that bark during the exam? This is one determined, pretty rambunctious little boy, and he wants you to know it! And keep him held down? NOT on your life!! Won’t he keep Bai Yun hopping once he gets out and about! She will definitely have her hands full. Reminds me a little of Zhen Zhen when she was cublet- just super adventurous.
I downloaded all of the pictures because he is just THAT cute!
Thanks for sharing all this marvelous information with us!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
I’ve figured out the next project for us pandaholics. Let’s buy or build a large rocking chair for Bai Yun. Right now she is sitting in the doorway leading out of her bedroom, Camera 17 is on, and she is just holding and touching the little guy. I can remember doing the same thing with my daughter, but I was in a rocking chair and it was so comforting for both of us. Does anyone agree?
November 13th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
#100 DoxieMom — You outdid yourself — thank you, thank you — the photos are beautiful and a wonderful way to celebrate the cub’s 100 day milestone.
November 13th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Sweet, sweet update — and from a former cat, now dog-owner — your love of animals is very apparent in the way you have lovingly described your first encounter with our fluffly little one — it actually brought a tear to my eyes. He indeed is very special — and looks so completely squeezable!
November 13th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Where will the Naming Ceremony be held? Next to the panda exhibit area?
Moderator’s note: It will be held in Hunte Amphitheater, across from Big Cat Trail.

DoxieMom……………….thank you so much for the wonderful video of the first 100 days of Bai Yun and the little man. Call me silly, but I cried……………It’s been an amazing journey for me to watch them. I watched them last night having a wonderful moment together…………..it’s awesome…….We are planning a trip to San Diego come March or April and look forward to seeing them both……tysvm again DoxieMom.

I have to tell you…visiting the S.D. Zoo was so much fun. I captured some wonderful pics and video and would highly recommend anyone who goes to S.D. to schedule time for the zoo. The sister pandas…ADORABLE!!! This little guy is just the cutest. : )

#79 Lucilla – I loved the letter from Momma Bai Yun to her precious Baiby. And he truly is so very, very special
I had to find that new box of Kleenex I just bought when Momma Bai was wondering if Baiby was going to be like his Dad. Good job Lucilla…
#100 DoxieMom – Thanks for spending so much of your valuable time to create these heartwarming video collections for us all to enjoy
I think that closing scene with Momma Bai and Baiby facing out from the den entrance, light spilling onto their faces captured it all best.
And what about our Littlest Panda Prince and that “bark” today! LOL !!! I think he was letting all the ladies know that even though they were bigger and there was more of them, that he was still in charge
And a most gracious appreciation to all at SDZ for allowing us to be a part of this wonderfully enchanting and endearing journey with Momma Bai and her precious Baiby.

Hi, you all! Remember when I wrote a couple of comments on my guess on the cub’s weight for this week’s exam–12 pounds? Well, I CALLED IT! He’s at 12.5 pounds!! I knew he would get to that weight based on how he’s been looking and a little bit of growth in the last 7-8 days. And, he’s grown to 24 inches! Gettting BIG!! Saw the pics and vid of the cub’s exam! I saw those two cute little teeth that have poked thru the gum line! They even showed that gorgeous black spot on the tip of the tail! Awesome! And that LOUD BARK!! WOW!!! That woke everybody up in that exam room. Plus, he was trying to show off his new walking skill! The one pic that they took of him today looking right straight at the camera was just perfect—loked dead on at the cam with that precious, beautiful, handsome, cutipitude face of his! I love that new nickname for him–Cutipitude!! That fits him to a tee! Was on the pandacam a little bit ago, and the fluffy muffin cubbie is taking a nap in the den! He had a big day today!
Also read the newest polar bear update about Chinook that was posted today. Everybody are still wondering if she’s pregnant or not! Still waiting to find out what one of those weekly ultrasounds will show us!
Well, gonna get back on the cam! Will be back later!

Jenny, what an honor to witness his 11th exam. I wish I could have. Happy 100th to Mr. Cuteness. I hope his name will be Son of Cloud since he will be Bai Yuns last baby. Bai Yun is such a wonderful Mom that it would be only fitting to have her son and last baby be named after her.
I never have loved and animal other then my own animals like I love him. I feel like he’s my baby panda. is I ador him and his parents. I feel like Gao Gao is left out of all of the love, So I want everyone to know that he is love just as much as Mommy and Mr. Cuteness.

Doxie Mom #100–beautiful 100-day retrospective. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Little guy definitely winning the “pandas in funny positions” award tonight–somehow sleeping on the side of his head with his fluffy butt stuck up in the air. Cute in any position!

Doxiemom, thank you for the 100 days. Do you have 10 dachshunds? That’s my fantasy, though they might no leave you enough time for all that great editing. What a gift. Thank you again.

Savanna #70,
BEAUTIFUL idea, I love the whole concept of a cake. Since no one in my household will be here to do the same with me, please imagine one more little voice singing in your minds because I will be singing in my heart!
Lee in Vancouver #117
I LOVE the idea of a rocking chair for Bai Yun. I LOVED mine when my daughter was a baby, why wouldn’t she??? Unfortunately, my husband is not a furniture builder so I couldn’t talk him into trying to make it, but let me know if you find someone willing.
Dearest Moderator,
What about Fonsia #59’s idea? Is there ANY chance of Fu Long staying here as Zhen Zhen’s “close friend”?
I keep trying to block out all the blogs about him leaving his mom and such because I have a problem due to an injury that makes it impossible at times to get ideas out of my head and I end up very drained and sick. It seems like it would maybe make a very heartbreaking situation a happy one???
Love to all and lots and lots of hugs and kisses to our pandas, especially our little boy. Aunt Phyllis Loves you little fuzzy butt (whatever your real name is :- D )
Moderator’s note: I believe Fu Long’s move is a done deal. But I am sure he will have a great time in his ancestral homeland.
November 14th, 2009 at 9:23 am
# 100 DoxieMom, I join others in thanking you for all the beautiful videos that you have posted on YouTube and for this retrospective of our mellow fellow first 100 days. It is nice to see him “turning” from a butter stick to a panda looking “micro me’ and into a “mini me”. My favorite pictures is when he is sleeping on his mom arm on 21-Aug-2009, I obviously had missed the feeding session in the bedroom on 01-Oct-2009 and the last picture of the both of them looking out the door with the sun shining on his nose is very appropriate as a sign of looking towards future bright days…
Moderator: How did Bai Yun react to her cub barking? We can’t hear her banging on the door like she did when the cub got his first vaccination.
Moderator’s note: Jenny told me that Bai Yun heard it but did not react to it.
November 14th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Oh Jenny, you make me “ohhhhh” and more “ahhhhhs” while reading your post. I am imagining your excitement and awe while watching munchkin bark:-). I love that moment too. I watch the video so many times just to see his “bark” over and over again. He makes me wish that I work with all of you:-). At least, I can touch him somehow.
Thank you for such an entertaining post. I can’t wait till Tuesday….I wish the name I voted for will be his name:-).
November 14th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Jenny, welcome to the club of “Panda Lady”. I am so evnvious of your job. I’m a cat lady, but Pandas…..ah, now that is the cutest thing in the world. Thanks for the post!

#100 Doxiemom – you are the greatest. What a beautiful collection of some of the most precious pictures I have seen, thus far. Thank you for sharing them all with us. I would bet all of our posters and fellow “pandaholics,” would agree that you are #1 in our eyes.
I’ve watched your collection over and over and have sent the link to many of my friends and grandchildren. They LOVE it. You’ve captured so much. I actually cried. Great memories, of a one of a kind mother Panda, Bai Yun and maybe her last cub. (’Chubbie Cubbie’ for now, until we learn his new name. I think he’ll always be “Chubbie Cubbie,” in my memories.)
God Bless you, dear, for sharing this with all of us. I know the SDZ is appreciative, also.
November 14th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Thank you all for the very kind comments. I have read each and every one of them, and they’ve touched my heart more than you’ll ever know! I’m horrible with words, that’s probably why I express myself with images!
Thank you San Diego Zoo for the awesome privilege of being able to watch and share with other ‘pandaholics’ the incredible journey that this precious cub and Bai have gone on thus far. I look forward to seeing what happens, each and very day!! Cute-itude indeed!
November 14th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
Every time I watch videos of this little guy’s exams, I’m just amazed and fascinated by those eyes. Like little black diamonds! And he keeps staring into the camera’s lens, smiling, as if to say, “Heh, heh! Am I not the most amazing cub in the world?” Yep, he’s got the world immersed in those wonderfully innocent little eyes. And that sharp little bark is only the beginning of his emerging personality. The exams just keep getting better and better. Thanks, Jenny, for your thoughts and feelings from this experience. And welcome to the club!
November 14th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Can I ask the panda vets a kind of stupid question, well I guess no question is stupid if you dont know the answer and just want to learn, but, are fleas only on cats and dogs, or do other animals get them? I think our baby is scratching because the hay or bamboo is tickling him. Surely he cant get bugs or critters in there right? I did see tiny mice on occassion at the zoo, but I guess its true in any “wilderness” or park area. I mean it is caged off, and fenced off.
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.
November 15th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
Great video Doxiemom, it is great to watch his progress like that. I too have been watching since he was tiny. It is precious to watch how tender bai is with him and how she now plays with him. last night for the first time I saw her holding him on all four of her paws, he did not look happy! Is it just me or did the bark that he produced in the exam seem to even surprise him? Has he ever barked like that before? It is too cute……I am so addicted to cubbie and Bai that I cannot wait to see what they are doing. He still sleeps so much but I guess that is good for his mom because she is going to have her hands full with him! Thanks SDZ and moderator, I love this whole learning experience. All of the animals are great and I hope your polar bear is expecting also.
November 17th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
I believe the pronunciation is:
Yún Zǐ (yun zih): son of cloud
I also voted for this name, it seemed appropriate to Bai.
