10th Exam: He’s a Heartbreaker
Posted at 2:24 pm November 5, 2009 by Dani Dodge Medlin
This guy, he’s a heartbreaker. Oh yeah, you know I’m talking about the San Diego Zoo’s 13-week-old giant panda cub.
Today was the first time I got to see the furry ball of fluff. I was in the exam room as a Zoo PR rep writing today’s press release on the exam. I thought I was ready for it. Just like you, I’ve seen the videos. Studied the photos of him exam after exam.
Still, San Diego Zoo videographer Shea Johnson warned me: “Don’t go ‘Ohhh’ when you see him.” (That kind of spontaneous eruption of sound from someone not even involved in the exam can spoil an otherwise great video.) I told her, of course I wouldn’t. I’m tough. Heck, I once broke my leg and still kept walking.

Here's the cub's tail with its spotted tip. Ken took this photo specifically for our panda fans!
I restrained myself from the “ohhs” and “ahhs” I would normally have cried out. But only because Shea was close enough to kick me.
The panda cub is about as big as my one-year-old granddaughter and, seriously, I wanted to cuddle him in the same way. The panda keepers noted that he seemed much more alert for this exam than past ones. He liked to watch Shea with her video camera, or Zoo photographer Ken Bohn with his still camera. He also seemed to like watching the doctor’s stethoscope.
In Public Relations, we had hoped that we would be able to announce that the cub had gotten his teeth, but alas, when the veterinarian felt for the sharp incisors, they hadn’t yet broken through the gums. But this roly-poly boy is definitely hitting all the panda milestones. He’s gaining weight and inches. In fact, he gained more than a pound just in the last week and now weighs 11.7 pounds (5.3 kilograms).
I know as he gets older, he will lose some of that cuddliness. And as a PR rep for the Zoo, I won’t be all that disappointed. ‘Cause I’m not sure I could stand going into another exam without saying “Ohhhhhh. Ahhhhh. He’s the cutest thing ever.”
And that would definitely ruin Shea’s video.

He was wide awake and seemed so comfortable. Where are those teeth though?
November 5th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Such a big boy! Almost a pound heavier than Mei Sheng and still the lengthiest!
Loved the shower and now Mom has taken him out for another breath of fresh air.
Heartbreaker, indeed, even if he is a little bristly.
November 5th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I love the gentlle way that the vet handles the cubbie – so tenderly! baby looked very alert and strong and like he was enjoying all the attention – a real flirt as well as a heartbreaker
November 5th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I’ve so enjoyed watching the little panda man grow–thanks for all the great photos, videos, and blogs! But when I read the title of this blog (”10th Exam: Heartbreaker”), I thought the worst–that something bad had been discovered in the exam. Could you maybe retitle it: “10th Exam: He’s a Heartbreaker”? Just an idea. Thanks again!
November 5th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Heartbreaker is right. What a doll baby he is. The first thing I do when I get to to work is log onto the Pandacam….and I go back several times during the day to check on all of our precious Pandas…..Thank you for sharing so much about them with us.
November 5th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
ohhhhhAhhhhhh I
Great post, wish I could be in your place. I was looking through the past pictures and noticed a few where the staff actually looks like they are doing some secret hugging.

I’ve been an observer since the first cub at the SDZ, and this baby is no exception. He just melts my heart. However, I must say that the title for this exam scared me….I honestly expected bad news! I’m just grateful that all is well and this sweet boy is growing and developing well. No teeth yet? I’ll bet his Mama is glad for that. Thanks for all the updates and extra details that keep us informed. I’m green with envy that I can’t see him in person…or hold him…!
November 5th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I’m so sorry I missed the shower today, but am happy that there’s the video of his latest exam. I’d love to reach into the computer to give him a hug, kiss and squeeze. He’s just so adorable. Thank you for all the posts giving us updates on the wonderful Panda family, and this darling babe.
November 5th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
We all knew that our little Ping Pong Yun (our name for the little guy) was having his 10th exam as soon as Bai Yun stood up to the window in the door of the exam room. This was the first time we had seen this happen. She is a great mother. We are looking forward to the naming ceremony we have a split vote for two of the names and either will be great! I never even knew what a gadget was on the computer and now little Ping Pong is the star of our office!
November 5th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
I can promise you this….all your ooohhhs and aaahhhhhs would be would be joined in symphony. I can’t speak for anyone else, love expressed is awesome. Thank you all for the work you do…just wish the vids would last the entire exam!!!
November 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I wouldn’t have been able to keep from saying OHHHHHHHHH because he is sooooooooo darn cute and I want to kiss and hug him in the worse way. I can’t wait till we can see him in person. How old does he have to be for the public to see him? I really love him sooooooooo much.
I was wondering why you don’t show Gao Gao very much and if you do when? I haven’t seen him at all, I see all of the girls through out the day, but never the handsome dude.
I think all of the Zoo keepers and video people do such a great job. I’ll trade jobs with you anytime. HE HE HE
Kisses and Hugs to you all, especially the Pandas.
A LOVE SICK PANDA FAN
November 5th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Well, I know you really can’t judge by stats alone, but I think the little ‘butter-ball’ is going to be a large adult. When he was born, he ‘hit the ground running’ (growing), and he hasn’t stopped since. Way to go, Big Guy! I caught him alone in the den earlier today. There was a piece of bamboo conveniently poking him in the face, so he tried to chew on it for a bit. Must have like the flavor, because he went to sleep with it still in his mouth. I had to leave the computer, so I don’t know how long he stayed that way. I totally agree with you, Dani…he’s a heartbreaker! Of course, he was flirting with the Vet and the cameras today, and he was just too charming.
I would have just let Shea kick me, and let out a long “Ohhhh!, how sweet!”
Thank you, Dani, for this touching account of a bystander for this exam. Lucky you!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I almost forgot to thank the cam operator for the lovely shot of Zhen Zhen today, primly sitting and munching her bamboo lunch. She looked so pretty. I can’t tell if she looks more like mom or dad. She has mom’s posture but dad’s eyes.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I love this new baby panda–it’s so adorable! I was just wondering if the Zoo had an idea of when it would start exhibiting the baby panda. Thanks so much!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
OH he is soooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!! His 10th exam wow he is sure growing fast!!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
The baby just crawled out of the den on his own!!! Bai had taken him out and brought him back in and she left and he just crawled right out on his own!! 6:13 pm EST time!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
I’ve just watched Chubby Cub leave the den!!!!!!!!!! Have been away a lot recently & I’m astonished at big he’s got. Great to see him so alert in the new video.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
I just saw baby crawl right out of the den!!! Is that the first time he’s done that by himself?? How exciting!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
the cub is doing his firsts steps! look panda cam now! it is great! she is a really good mother!

OUr cubbie is turning in to a salmon colored little boy. Or should I say BIG boy. According to the measurement comparisons of the other cubs, Chubbie Cubbie is truly getting roly poly. Will be glad when we have a name for him, but I will always think of him as a Chubbie Cubbie.
I sure wish we had longer exam video’s to look at. I could watch him up close like that, all day long. Saw alot of playing early this afternoon between mom and baby and loved when Bai Yun has been taking him in and out of the den. She is obviously trying to get him to follow her in and out of the den. It looked like “training day,” between Mom and Cub. Cubbie would still sleep all day, is Mom didn’t come in and awaken him. I guess she thinks it’s time for him to start being a little more active outside.
Bai’s mothering still brings tears to my eyes. She is a magnificant animal and so loving, although sometimes rough; with her young son. She is a real treasure.
Thank you SDZ for the close ups of the young man’s health exam. He was really looking around at you all. It was precious.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Didn’t think he could get any cuter!! It was so nice to see him awake and bright eyed during the exam. It must be hard to not just grab him and cuddle with him.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
The baby got out of the nest this evening, and the camera person did not even keep up, how sad, i wanted to see where he went all by himself, he is getting aroung good, i hope the camera keeps up onday
November 5th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Here’s a story Chubby cubbie and Zhen Zhen part#2! Enjoy!

November 5th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
Those teeth are getting close, he loved it when the vet rubbed across his gums!!! He still makes my heart smile!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
He is getting so big!
And it looks like Bai took him out of the den for a bit this afternoon.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
He is so precious ! The tip on his tail is sooo cute. I can’t believe how big he is getting. I’m waiting to see him crawl all over the place. I love watching all the pandas every day. I was wondering where the tint of his fur is coming from ? I saw somewhere, one of the staff mentioned something about the pinkish color coming from the mom’s teeth biscuits, but I wasn’t sure if that had anything to do with his tint now.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
awww he is soo cute! i wanna pet him and hug him!!!!!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Oh yes, he is a heartbreaker! And just when you think he cannot get any more adorable, he does. Beautiful photos and video. Love the little black tip of his tail.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Heck, I once broke my leg and still kept walking.
That, my friend, is physically impossible
.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I thought I saw him sitting this afternoon… this panda has brought so many people together (our panda family) he gives out so much love and certainly he receives it from us….he is too adorable and yes quite the charmer…toooooo cute!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Thank you, Dani, for affirming all the cuteness we observe on the pandacam. I probably would have received several well-deserved kicks from Shea.
The shower today was a terrific idea. It was so much fun purchasing a present and watching all the comments. It seemed like Bai decided when the shower was over, as she returned to take Cubby out of the den. It was such a picture watching her hold him in the doorway.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Dani, if it had been me, I would NOT have been able to restraint myself from screaming, “OH MY GOD!!!! He is the cutest thing ever! I wanna hold him! Give him to me now! I wanna kiss him and hug him!” I would have probably been dragged off in a straightjacket. Either that or I would have burst into tears just to be in the prescence of such an incredibly charismatic cubby and my uncontrollable sobbing would have ruined the video.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
They would of had to tape my mouth shut because the second I saw him the ohhs and ahhs would of just came rolling out.
November 5th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Thanks Dani for your update. Watching the latest video, I totally agree with you that the little guy can melts alot hearts. That simple stare of his at the camera automatically puts me in a spaced out zone, as if I just cannot take my eyes off him. I really have to give you much kudos for your restraint at not letting any signs of cub adoration slipping out. Hats off to getting a hold of yourself so as to not quickly grab him and giving him a hundred of kisses. I know if I were in the same room, nothing would hold me back!
November 5th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
It’s hard enough from a distance — it must be super hard in person! The ooh, ahh factor is unavoidable. Thanks as always for keeping us updated, and an extra thanks for the tail spot photo.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
What a little stud!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Aawwww! What a roly poly little dude!!! The video is adorable and the writing about being allowed to be in the same room was enough to cause me to vocalize sighs
I loved how the little (?) fuzz ball followed the voice of the Dr.!!!
One of the things I am amazed at is how often baby is sprawled on his back! I don’t remember Zhen on her back often. Perhaps a full tummy is more comfortable when in the back position
SDZ, thank you all for ALL you do!!!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
How sweet! He is a heart breaker. Love and kisses to Cubbie #5 and Bai Yun!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Hi there everyone, I, like everyone else have been watching our little cub since he was born, and I too want to cuddle him, kiss him, and just want to squeeze him forever. He is sooo adorable. I have enjoyed all the pictures of him, and all the videos are in my e-mail address so I can see him any time I want. I have had a love of pandas forever, and every bit of info is wonderful to read and see. I have two cars with panda tag numbers on each one, and as you can see my e-mail reflects that also. Keep up the good work with these beautiful animals, as it is very important to save them and all living creatures. I look forward to every exam or picture of him and all the others we see at the zoo. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

November 5th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……….ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh………………….LOL I can say it for you!!!
Adoreable, just adoreable……………thank you for sharing your feelings and the update.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Omigosh Dani…thanks for your vivid update!!! You had my giggling non-stop!
I can just imagine how TOUGH it would have been to stifle your natural reaction to this bundle of adorable sweetness!! But at least you got to be in the same space…what we panna fans wouldn’t give to be in the same position! He is definitely a heart-melter…I salute you for being able to restrain yourself.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
This little cubby is growing by leaps and bounds. 11.7 lbs. He is so cute and fluffy. I just love watching him, even when he is sleeping.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
His tail is adorable! He is just to cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
He’s just too cute! That spot on his tail is adorable. Thanks to the photographer. When Cubby he was opening his mouth during the Baby Shower I thought his teeth were through. Maybe next week. I’m sure Bai is happy nursing without teeth.
November 5th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Ack! Don’t subtitle an exam “heartbreaker”, I thought something had gone wrong!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
I love today’s exam video! Indeed this is one in which he is the most lively and curious I have seen so far! His eyes were focused and fixated on the camera, and it was just adorable!
November 5th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
aaawww, he looks so cute and I love the pic of his spot on his little black tail. I missed the shower and the questions on Facebook since I had to work. Hope someone will post some of the answers here on the blog. I just checked the cam and the little guy is right outside the den door. All I can see is his little fluffy butt! So cute.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Dani, ty for the great update and your feelings. Honestly, Shea, no Shea, I would have said the biggest AWWWWW, but, great camera and video work Shea and all. It was so fun to see ZZ and Su Lin today, even the close ups, such gorgeous bears they are. I also witnessed the roly poly dude make the great escape and was so very excited to have seen it. Now it begins LOL!!! If you love the sounds the Panda’s make, then go to you tube and watch The Most Pathetic Panda Ever, so so adorable and I bet you watch it more than once. Hope roly poly dude is warm enough. Have a great night all and SD Zoo Staff, Keepers, and Posters.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Scared me to the death with the title of your blog – heartbreaker? I thought something had happened in the exam to Mr. Wonderful. So glad it was just that HE is the heartbreaker. But then we all knew that all along anyway!! What an absolutely adorable bundle of coarse fluff… so attentive during the exam, and so expressive with those eyes of his. Loved how he is so trusting and laid back, even with a few noises here and there, he still lets you know he is okay with all that happens around him. I just know I couldn’t have held back – I would not only have been ooohing and aahing, I’d have wanted to hug him to bits!
I do have one question though. All the other exams ended with the cub being returned to the den. This video just seemed to abruptly end, almost in mid thought. Was there more, and it just couldn’t all be included? Seemed kind of jarring.
Having said that, I am totally NOT grumbling! We are so lucky to even get to have the panda cam and the videos and photos of our little cublet. It’s a treat for all of us pandaholics! Again, thanks for all that you do, and the way in which you show how much you care for these wonderful animals!
November 5th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
that tail !!!!
November 5th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
I have to agree with Panda Fan. My heart sank when I read “heartbreaker” especially when I look at the cam and there is no panda in it! I did see him just outside the door moving around. This has been a lot of fun to watch and can’t wait to hear the name. The exam videos are a real treat and the blogs have a lot of good information. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication
November 5th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
“Heartbreak Kid” was not on the list of possible names…maybe it should have been! He is so beautiful.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Once again, all I can say is he is sooooooooooooooo cute, just want to give him hugs and kisses. I love the little noises he makes. He sure is getting big. Give him a hug from me!
November 5th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW THAT FEELS SO GOOD WHEN YOU RUB MY TEETHING GUMS!!!! Don’t stop!!!!!!!!!!!! What a cutie bug he is. That tail is precious. lol I know mommie is glad his teeth are not showing yet, can you blame her? Okay here goes for Dani….OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW OHHHHHHHHHHHHH AWWWWWWWWWWWWW he is soooooooooooooooo cute! We did it for you video or not Dani. Good job.
November 5th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
How cute…I missed the shower today because I was picking up kids from school the whole time!!! “Heartbreaker” he is !!! even if some people do have to complain about the title on today’s blog!!!!!! Thanks Dani for a great post..and to all at the SDZ for keeping us up to date on “our baby”.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
When I saw “Heartbreaker”, I was scared to read about the exam – I thought something was wrong with that cute little cubby. Thank goodness, all is well with ‘our’ baby!! He really is a ‘heartbreaker’!
November 5th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Wow, look at those toe nails. I don’t think I could have avoided making some OOOHs or AAAAHs, kick me all you want.
He is just the sweetest little thing I have seen in a long time. He gets more handsome every time I see him.
I am sure whatever name we selected will fit him best.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:34 pm
I agree with changing the name of the blog for tenth exam– add “He’s a” before heartbreaker! My heart sank when I saw “heartbreaker” as I thought that you had discovered a problem!
November 5th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
I missed his leaving the den but he is still out by the door right now. Glad to see he is starting to wake up to life!
Is there a way to see how the baby shower went today? I coudn’t attend. Do we get to read the list of donations that was given?
Moderator’s note: I’ll find out.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Thanks for the 10th exam video and updates! Oh yes, the spot on the baby boy’s tail is so cute! Baby panda girl Lin Ping in Thailand has a cute spot on the tip of her tail too.
November 5th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Dani: He really is the Prince of Hearts as he is stealing every one that sees those eyes…I had to buy my wife a Furreal Luv Panda Cub as a get well gift while she recovers in the Hospital as I guess that is the closest we’ll get to holding a doll like soon to be announced name…..Keep up the great work as SDZ is winning hearts with every baby born and every photo and video of the little charmer….I see he is dreaming a lot as he pumps his legs and soon will be a terror on 4 legs but we know momma was a little less tolerant of misbehavior with every cub she has had to date….I can’t wait to watch his first steps as he is becoming a loveable fur ball spikey fur and all….
November 5th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
So sorry I missed the cub leaving the den under his own locomotion around 3:15 PM. But I see him lying just outside the den at 7:02 PM– this is a first, a milestone. And so exciting!
November 5th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
his name should be ‘little prince’
November 5th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
I love when they bring him in and his paws look soo big! It is adorable. I for one, would in no way be able to restrain myself as you did. I would have to grab and squeeze him. I missed him crawling out of the den but I have seen him attempt this several times such as last night. He wanted to follow his mommy. I wish I saw it tonight, he has issues getting those back legs going! It is too cute…Thanks for these videos, he sure was a showstopper today, he seemed to enjoy all the attention and his surroundings. Did Bai really look in the window? Can she see in there? I do not think she would be calm if she could…It is still her baby and the natural instinct I would think would kick in. Would a zoo keeper ever attempt right now to take the cub if she could see it? I think it would be dangerous..Thanks again and lucky you for being able to watch the actual exam! What a treat!
November 5th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
#4 Pandafan- thanks for suggesting that the subtitle of the blog be changed to He’s a Heartbreaker. I had the same reaction (as so many others did -” OMG, what could be wrong with the little sweetie??”) I see it’s been changed so we can all breathe easy. So sorry I missed the actual steps today. Will try to watch more tomorrow. I have watched since Tai Shan was born and have never seen (or noticed at least) any of the cubs spending so much time on their backs. He looks so adorable with belly up and limbs doing those little twitches. What a delight!
November 5th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Had to put our precious kitty “Puff” to sleep last week so it has been a very sad and empty time around the house lately. When I tell my dear hubby I need to go to my happy place, he knows I mean the San Diego zoo panda cam. Thanks to all of you at the zoo for all you do and for all the panda fans and their most excellent and often precious comments. It certainly helps to ease the grief.
Moderator’s note: So sorry to hear of the loss of your sweet Puff. I’m glad our panda cub can help you through this tough time in his small way.
BTW-Just watched the video of the 10th exam and it looks like from watching Dr. White that “palpating his joints” is veterinarian secret speak for “hugging the cubbie”!
:):)
November 5th, 2009 at 8:10 pm
I had to work today, so I am sorry I missed the Shower. Hope someone tells us how it went and I will read all the comments. Our Chubbie Cubbie is still by the front step of the den, and looks like he may want to get back in. Hope he cries loud enough for Bai to hear him, and they can sleep together. So, I know it will be instinct but I guess Gao can never teach him guy stuff right? You havent mentioned what happens when males see each other, fight big time I guess. I mean baby Frank the gorilla is learning stuff from Paul Donn and all the moms, but our cubs learn alot just from instinct? They are not ours, so we cant put them together, or they might fight?
November 5th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
I thought heartbreaker was sweet! Think positive folks! That is an age old saying about cute little ones growing up, heartbreaker it is!!!! I don’t think any harm was intended by those that said it scared them however, they care and that is a good thing, right?
November 5th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
So glad you changed the title! When I first saw it, “heartbreaker”, I thought, “oh no! Something’s wrong with Napping Bear!” Whew!
November 5th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
OK 8:30, mommy Bai, lifted junior up over that step and is now cuddling him, I guess his ears dont get cold, but I know his nose runs……….he he he….
November 5th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
What a BIG boy… I look forward to every blog about him. I would love to do what you guys do. The other Giant pandas are always a joy to view as well. Good job everyone!
November 5th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Well, all I got to say is—OMG!!!!!!! First off, the panda baby shower was awesome!! I enjoyed reading everybody’s comments along with some ooooooooh’s and aaaaaaaah’s! Plus, watching little cubby on the cam along side the Facebook chat! Hope you all can do this again soon! That was fun!
The next thing is another OMG!!! This cub has gotten sooooooooo BIG!! He is just toooooooo adorable for words! I just absolutely LOVED the way that he looked straight ahead at the cameras (both video and still), and those precious eyes just looked at us dead on! That face is just cute, adorable, precious, lovely, whatever great adjective that anyone can think of! On some of the pics, the cam got close enough for us to see inside his mouth, and I could see the tops of those teeth right at the gum line! Those teeth will be popping thru in the next week, I’ll bet ya! He’s just a little bit of a late bloomer on baby teeth coming thru! And, almost 12 pounds!! WOW!!! That’s how big he’s gotten! He is still showing us that rolly polly tummy, too!
Dani, you’re article was cute, informative, and just absolutely FUNNY!! I don’t know about you still walking on a broken leg, but boy, you have got alot of restraint when you didn’t do those ooooh’s and aaaah’s when the cub came in! I know you wanted to say that, tho! I just loved that pic of the cub’s tail!! That cute little black spot on the tip of his tail is just adorable and cute! I hope that little black spot keeps growing as he grows and it never goes away! That’s his special little “birth mark”! Thanks, Ken, for getting that picture for us! We all appreciate it alot!!
I thought I saw him trying to crawl out of the den when his mom was playing with him and pulling him back into the den! This little fuzzy guy was trying soooooo hard to get away from mom! Oh well, not yet little man! In about another month or so when you are really walking good, you’ll have your chance to get away from your mom and make her chase after you!
Well, gonna go and check the cam again. Was on there a little bit ago before writing this, and the den is EMPTY! Cubbie outside with mom under the stars again!
Anyway, thanks to the keepers for having that wonderful chat time with you and everyone else that got in on the shower! That was a wonderful one hour of fun, even when it went a little bit over an hour! Like I said, I hope that the keepers will be able to have another chat time again soon! Still have alot to learn about these gorgeous bears! Great job, you all!!

PS: Now I’m looking forward to November 17 when the cubbie gets his new name!

They are play boxing now, and when Bai holds him her “all Fours”, he is like a stuffed doll, flopping, sort of, maybe he goes limp for safety instinct, and I wish I could hear the baby sounds, and the mommy sounds, but I guess we would all get scared with the whimpering, and squeaking, etc. I want to hear an adult bear sound too…
November 5th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
This is my first post. I have enjoyed everyone else’s, so I must share this. It seems that most everyone missed Chubbies first trip by himself. Bai was inside with him and he wanted to go out. He would make it to the door and Mom would pull him back. She finally pinned him by one leg and was he ever mad. He put his front paws over his head and looked like he was screaming. That went on for several minutes before Bai finally got him calmed down. She moved the bedding away from the door, maybe thinking the little ledge would keep him in. She left him sleeping. That lasted about 5 min. and he was up and crawling out of the door. Sadly no one changed the camera but you could see him sleeping outside the door. I think our little boy is going to be a real handful. It is such a joy to watch him!
November 5th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Thanks for changing the title on the blog entry. I was scared only for a couple seconds, but I was scared!
November 5th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
I’ll “ooohhhhh, & Ahhhhhhh” for you!! I love this little guy! I love reading about him and watching the videos. He’s quite the “Handsome Bear!”
November 5th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Dani, you have that very fine attribute called restraint! I would have been smiling from ear to ear and doing everything I could to get next to him. He definitely did like having his gums rubbed didn’t he, as someone has already mentioned.
I walked through the door last night 3 minutes after the Panda Shower ended. Sigh. Did I read somewhere that there will be a post covering some of the questions asked? I do hope so. Lots of hugs to Bai and Little One.
Moderator’s note: We will try to provide some sort of recap/transcript of yesterday’s shower.
November 6th, 2009 at 12:06 am
#66 Sherie, so sorry about your lovely kitty Puff. He will always be with you.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:08 am
i missed the shower! because it was way past my sleeping time. by the way, anyone had any idea what they do during panda shower? and have they given the name yet?
Moderator’s note: The shower was simply an online live chat with two of our panda keepers. Readers could post questions for the keepers during that hour, and many panda fans also provided shower gifts for our pandas using our animal wish list. We’ll post a recap of the questions and answers soon. The cub’s name will be announced at a naming ceremony on Nov. 17.
November 6th, 2009 at 3:58 am
I saw him leave, too! I hope the shower produced some really distracting toys so Bai will get some time for sleep, bamboo, and Panda-Zen meditation. Maybe one of his sisters should babysit. Bet ZZ could tire him out!
As always, wonderful essays!
November 6th, 2009 at 4:09 am
Hiyah,
I noticed I am not the only one who feels that the naughty naughty keepers and vets claim to be professionally handling the Chubster but are secretly hugging and petting and giving him lots of love. Hmmmmm….but you guys have earned it. He looks happy, contented and a mighty handful.
November 6th, 2009 at 4:29 am
FYI – If you missed the baby leaving the den, (as I did), IffyBear has posted the video on YouTube. It’s a little dark but you can see the final tail flip over the ledge! Escape at last!!
Thanks IffyBear!!

Good morning Panda Family!
Unfortunately, after trying to do everything right, opening up a facebook account and all, my personal family obligations overrode everything and I missed the shower….darn it. I REALLY wanted to be there, I was looking forward to it for days. I was hoping I got to see them give Gao Gao the present I bought him.
Moderator (or anyone else)
Do you know of any way to view a video taping of it or something?
Sherie 66
I am SOOOO sorry you lost your little buddy Puff. I just lost my BIG best friend of more than 12 years-Jet. I know cats and dogs aren’t supposed to be friends, but my dog doesn’t know that because he’s been raised with cats. He is also VERY loving and protective of ANYTHING small and fragile, so I am POSITIVE that Jet will watch over Puff while they wait for us at the Rainbow Bridge. I hope this helps you a little bit, and I will continue to pray that God helps us BOTH with our grief.
Dear Moderator,
I’m afraid health issues prevent me from being able to pitch a tent to sleep in the parking lot like someone else offered. However, if I can get my hands on an RV and I promise to pick up ALL the panda poop for a month, do you think there is ANY chance I might get to hold our little “heart-breaker” just for five minutes??? I won’t even kiss him if they are afraid of my germs. I swear my chest hurts from just wanting to reach out and hug him so he can feel the love I will never be able to express with words.
Before you tell me no, remember I will bring lots and lots of herbal tea Hee! Hee!
Moderator’s note: We don’t have video of the online chat, but we hope to provide a recap of sorts for those unable to attend.
November 6th, 2009 at 5:17 am
First of all thank you, thank you, and thank you again for the beautiful video of cubby’s 10th exam. He sure is a handful, Roxy #74. I can only repeat what my fellow bloggers have been saying all along: “He is sooooooo cute and adorable!!!” Dani, thank you for your lovely story, you were very brave to restrain yourself from hugging and kissing this bundle of joy, mind you, this big bundle of joy. He has grown incredibly fast, I feel. All panda babies are cute, but I also feel that he has so far topped the “cuteness”. Unfortunately I was unable to be connected via Face book to join the panda baby shower yesterday. I tried several times to no avail.
I also missed the scene when “Heartbreaker” tried to crawl out of the door. Thank goodness for time lapse cam. If we humans feel already that the cubby is a heartbreaker I am trying to imagine what his future panda ladies will be thinking. My “crystal ball” shows me that he will be siring the most beautiful pandas to come, thanks to mum’s and dad’s genes.
Sherie# 66, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. It is always so sad to lose a beloved animal. I have been going through this sooo often and every time I feel this is the worst time. As the moderator remarks, the panda cam is such a mood lifter and lets one forget for a while.
As cheerful as little San Diego cubby makes me feel as very sad have I become during the last couple of days when learning that “my” panda boy Fu Long will be departing for China on November 18th, just one day after your panda baby’s naming ceremony. I knew it had to happen one day since Vienna Zoo has got no space for three adult pandas. A bit of consolation is the fact that apart from other zoo people his favourite keeper will accompany Fu Long on his long journey. And another lady doing some research in China will stay at the same reserve as Fu Long and, therefore, will be able to look after him and tell him stories about his mum Yang Yang in far away Vienna Fu Long was so attached to. He never met his daddy Long Hui owing to safety measures. I am starting to sob when thinking of Fu Long having to travel so far away and staying in China forever. But once Yang Yang and Long Hui are joining rooms again next year Vienna Zoo may be lucky again and have another panda baby.
November 6th, 2009 at 5:39 am
Dani,
Nothing can spoil a panda cub exam video even there are any kind of spontaneous eruption of sounds from anyone, it may make the video more natural.
There were lot of jokings and laughting in Mei Sheng’s health exam videos, Dr. Lindberg even took his own video by his own video-cam, and the interactions between the keepers and Mei Sheng were interesting, all these made up a great video.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:05 am
Tks for the pic of the tail tip. How cute is that?
Again tks for the great party yesterday. Y’all are just great about sharing that cutie with the world. Not everyone can get to San Diego.
I still want to know how wide his tail is. Looks about the same as the lenght. Is that right?
November 6th, 2009 at 6:09 am
I’m sorry I missed baby’s first solo adventure. It sounds like he’s one determined little cub.
Thanks for amending the title of the post from “Heartbreaker” by adding “He’s a…” to the title. Like some of the others have already posted, I was a little freaked out when I first read that original title.
I also agree that “palpate his joints” sounds like keeper-speak for “I get to squeeze the cubbie” and, while I always enjoy watching the exam videos, I always wish I could do the squeezing…er… uh… palpating.
Loved the picture of his little tail spot, too. Thanks, Ken, for thinking of us fans!
November 6th, 2009 at 6:29 am
#74 Roxy — You described it perfectly — I think this was his first outing outside the den under his own steam. I presume Bai brought him back in later, althought he slept for a long time just outside the threshold to the den.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Thanks, SDZ, for all the recent informative and charmingly written posts. Each one makes me feel like I’m watching the cub in person. I know everyone wants the cub’s teeth to appear, but I find his little pink gums very endearing, especially when he opens his mouth wide to yawn. They remind me that he’s still a baby despite his rapid growth.
November 6th, 2009 at 6:37 am
OMG…he is just the cutest thng. Seeing his debut yesterday and watching mom take him back to the den was cute. I found it cuter that once he got a taste of outside, he was curious to look back out again. Like he wanted to explore more. ???
November 6th, 2009 at 7:01 am
Thank the panda gods that we are not allowed to hug him because he would be a squashed flat little black and white (with a splash of pink) pan(da)cake!
November 6th, 2009 at 7:06 am
thank you so much for the picture of the black tipped tail – precious!! He’s so darned cute!! I love how alert he was during the exam – seems to just “go with the flow” and that’s got to be a good thing! Thanks again for the video and all the updates and pictures.
November 6th, 2009 at 7:16 am
Thank you so much for the update! I love looking at the photos/videos….I am so envious of your job! I love going back and seeing how he has grown. Thanks for making our day’s much brighter via the Panda Cam!
November 6th, 2009 at 7:22 am
Keep those videos coming of this little bundle. They put a firewall up in my office computer so now I can’t view the pandacam on my lunch hour anymore (or those “teeny” little breaks in the day…..) I am soooooo mad! Luckily I have my own laptop at home and guess who I will be keeping an eye on in my free time at home????
November 6th, 2009 at 7:35 am
Do we have a eta of the posting of the baby shower info yet? I know you all intend on posting it.. but being STUCK AT THE EVIL WORK place that doesn’t allow face book.. is KILLING ME!!! All things panda must be kept up! Those little IT computer geeks know better than to take away my Cam.. I will break their pencil protectors!!! Anyway…. any idea on when we will have the information on the baby shower?
Moderator’s note: I can’t give an exact time for posting the shower recap, but it is something we plan to do in the next few days.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:09 am
#66 Sherie sorry to read about the lost of your percious kitty. I too lost one last year it is so hard but true going to the pandacam can bring a smile through all the tears. Wishing you the best.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:28 am
#66 Sherie so sorry about your loss of your Kitty. I know this Panda Cubby & his Mom bring me joy in times of sorrow. Hopefully it will do that for you.
I wasn’t able to see the shower yesterday and was wondering if they were going to write something about it. I haven’t been able to find it yet. Also “our” little boy is a heartbreaker. OMG is he so big and more alert now. Great job SDZ!!! Thanks for keeping us posted. Can’t wait for the 17th. My little stuffed panda is waiting to be named too!
Moderator’s note: We will provide a recap of sorts about the online shower.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Sherrie #66, I too am very sorry for your loss. It is unbearable to lose an animal that has been your child. Keep watching the “little guy”, he will help you.
November 6th, 2009 at 9:23 am
Dear Moderator,
You NEVER let me down!! Thanks for letting me know that they are trying to put together a “recap” of sorts of yesterday’s events and for the future plans. It gives us all something else great to look forward to. Been a while since I said it, so give yourself a hug girl, you certainly have earned many with your constant attempts to keep us crazy pandaholics happy!
Joan 82 and IffyBear,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. The video of baby boy escaping the den yesterday was priceless. For those of you who have not seen it yet, try this link. I HOPE I did it right.

Ruth in Austria #84
I share your feelings of lose attached to your Fu Long having to go to China, as our Su Lin will have to do the same soon enough. Even though I have not known her since her being a baby, I still feel like she is “ours” and I don’t want her to go either. I’m going to try to think positive and think about the beautiful babies she will give the world. Perhaps thinking of Fu Long’s cubs will help you, I hope so.
Although I have only been part of this wonderful panda family since the birth of Bai Yun’s 5th cubbie, I’ve done a lot of video and picture searches all over different internet sights; and I have to agree—THIS baby tops the charts when it comes to beauty and charisma. I also cannot wait to see what wonderful accomplishments he achieves and I am SURE he will father many more beautiful baby cubbies for us when he becomes the “man” his daddy is!
To ALL the photographers, videographers, keepers, narrators, moderators, etc. etc. etc. Thank you for everything to do for our beautiful animals of all kinds and for allowing us to be such an intimate part of their lives. You are appreciated more than simple words can say!
November 6th, 2009 at 9:26 am
Cindy #87, Ruth #84, #62 Carole, #59 Jeslyn and everyone else who missed the cub leave the den, I put together a YouTube video that shows him leaving. Also shows when they panned the camera to the bedroom so you could see him sleeping out there, and catch a glimpse of Bai Yun. Search for “BaiBy Leaves the Den By Himself”, or the link is:

Have been watching panda cams since NZ’s Tai Shan was born. Being my first panda baby, he will always be my favorite. The sound feature of their cam was both joyful and scarry, you could hear every little squeak and squawk. Our “Little Prince” in San Diego reminds me so much of Tai as Tai loved to lie on his back a lot , mom also held him on his back often. He would lay there and playfully chew on his hind feet just like human babies. Watching this little guy is a real joy, can’t wait to see his name. I got to hold a 1 yr old baby panda in Wolong, China (Sept 2007), an experience I never will forget- – - believe me, I did a lot of hugging and cuddling. Sure wish I could get my hands on the “Little Prince” here in San Diego. Thank you San Diego, for keeping us posted on every aspect of the pandas.
November 6th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Dean #101 – I also remember (and have commented on) Tai spending a lot of time on his back! I’m wondering if it’s a male panda cub thing because I don’t remember the girls spending as much time on their back. Grounds for more study… can I volunteer to watch baby pandas for this?
November 6th, 2009 at 11:15 am
#100 DoxieMom — Thank you, thank you, thank you! Loved reliving those moments of the cub’s feat in exiting the den under his own steam. It underscores the vet’s comments about his developing strength. I am certain he was so proud of himself and Mama Bai –”That’s my boy!”
November 6th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Thanks #101 Doxie Mom! Keep putting the videos together in between exams! I’m loving it! (I too have an evil office blocking the beloved cam!)
November 6th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Carole #103, you’re so very welcome!
For those inquiring about the Shower, I did record the hour event, but it doesn’t make for good video (especially since YouTube has a 10 minute limitation)! I’m going to wait for the San Diego Zoo personnel to provide us with a readable transcript of the event!
Fun facts that were revealed during the shower were: the den is 36″ in circumference and about 5′ tall; Bai weighs about 100kg now; Kathy described Bai as “devoted and loving”; the cooler weather is making the pandas more frisky!! I’ll let the SDZ tell you the rest!
For those that want to see what Bai and her cub were doing during the Shower, I have a YouTube video called “Bai Yun’s BaiBy Shower Day” which shows her taking the cub from the den, a bit of their time in the sunroom , their return to the den via the bedroom and BaiBy peeking out of the den not once, but twice! The link is:

November 6th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Oh my gosh, you have such restraint, I know I couldn’t have not said aaahhh or oooohhh when I saw him or pick him up and cuddle him. He’s the cutest ever, I look forward to seeing him everyday. The vets are not checking him out at all, lol, they’re giving him hugs and cuddles, good for you guys, we all need hugs and cuddles and he has to be so easy to hug and cuddle. His tail is adorable. I’m in love. Thanks for the video of our little chubby cubby leaving the den, I missed it this morning.
November 6th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
I just cracks me up at how mellow little man is !
November 6th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
DoxieMom…..thank you, thank you……best videos I have seen of the cub…..
Really enjoyed yours and I have no clue as to how to do things like that on my computer…..your efforts are really appreciated…..thank you again!
November 6th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
#105 DoxieMom — You did it once again. Thank You — so much fun!
November 6th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Doxie Mom 100
Although I saw the video IffyBear had of yesterday’s “escape”, you caught things theirs did not. So I thank you just as I thanked them for the wonderful video. How are you doing it though?
November 6th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
CiJiDunne #104, Jeslyn #108, Carole #109, Phyllis #110 – you are very welcome! I am enjoying this experience thoroughly as this is the first cub I have followed daily since birth, with no plans to stop now! Pandas are my passion!
I have special software on my computer that I use to record, produce and upload the videos to YouTube. Having an extra large hard drive also helps since the recorded footage takes a lot of space.
But truly, the thanks should go to the San Diego Zoo, as they are the ones who provide us with the opportunity of watching Bai Yun and Gao Gao’s family daily, 24/7!
November 6th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
He is so cool!
November 6th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Did anyone notice that there was a shadow image of a panda on the den floor (conjunction of den layer and light) while little one was crawling out of the den. His guardian angel!
November 6th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Wow, Dani, you sure got a big response. I am happy for you that you got to be so close to Gao’s big son. He is starting out big, so it looks like he may take after Bai’s side of the family. Perhaps that is a sign of his soon to be announced name.
He is a heart throb for sure! No wonder Bai loves to be with him so much. And his rollaround baths make him evenly round all over.
November 7th, 2009 at 8:05 am
Thank you to everyone who sent their condolences on the loss of my sweet Puff. While I’m not new to Panda Cam (years!), I am new to leaving comments (just this week!), and the outpouring of caring is overwhelming!
#83 Phyllis – I am sorry to hear that you lost Jet. It really is amazing what a hole their loss can leave in your life, isn’t it? I, too, am familiar with Rainbow Bridge and can now have a mental picture of Jet watching over Puff. (Although I don’t think you could characterize her as fragile! She liked to bite!!) I look forward to meeting you in person at Rainbow Bridge when we can cross over into Heaven together with our beloved pets who wait for us there! I’ll be praying for you, too!
And to you, dear Moderator, thank you for your comment. As busy as you folks must be, you took the time to say something right to me and that means so much. And while the cubbie may be small physically, the help he gives is by no means small!
November 7th, 2009 at 10:47 am
#84 Ruth: I feel the same you do about Fu Long Leaving. I have followed him from afar and the bond he has with his mother is absolutely amazing. Even after two years she shows no sign of wanting to wean him, in fact I’ve seen video where he can even take her boo and she doesn’t get angry or swat him – they just sit side by side and munch away and share. Apparently he is going to be on display with her right up until the day before he leaves so it will be an abrupt weaning. I can’t even imagine how hard that will be on both of them and I try not to think about it because it makes me cry.
November 7th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
!!!! OMG!!!!
he is walking~~~~ >.>
so cute~~ soon he can run around outside the field~~ =D
November 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I think he looks like his Dad.
November 7th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
DoxieMom, I just watched your video of Bai Yuns BaiBy Shower Day and I can’t thank you enough for the amazing pics. I missed alot of that and thanks to you was able to see some great stuff. Oh my gosh those close ups of BaiBy going out the door was great!!! Thank you again.
November 8th, 2009 at 4:32 am
This exam shows us how healthy and strong he looks and is….He is the most beautful Panda Cub I have ever seen….I know that I am biased because I have watched his growth and progress since his birth….but I believe our Panda Cub to be probably the most amazing animal in the world and the most enduring to all that come in contact with him….thanks again to the Panda Team and to all of the vets who care for him and all of the PR Media that shares his daily progress and gives us( the public), updates….without all of you, none of this would be possible…..I have learned so much…..and watching him everyday has opened up my emotions…I am totally in love and hooked forever on Pandas….all animals are special and miracles, but the Pandas are just that more unique and wonderful!!!!
Thanks again….
November 8th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I am going to volunteer for 3 weeks in Bifengxia,China, working with the pandas. in January. The earthquake in Wolong, 1-1/2 yrs. ago forced the pandas to be transferred to this research center. I look at this site daily, and I can’t wait to touch these great creatures.
November 8th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
Sherie 115
Thanks for the reciprocated prayers, I really do need them right now. But I will think of the fun we will have when we meet our best friends again and cross into Heaven.
November 8th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
DoxieMom ,thank you for your videos. I witnessed the little guy leaving the den the other day and couldn’t believe it. I was so glad I could watch it over again to see it what I was seeing was not my imagination. I feel like # 120. This Panda Cubby & Bai Yun have opened up so many emotions. I ,too, am hooked. I have the webcam on my iPhone so I can watch anytime. Thank you so much SDZ and all the bloggers.
November 9th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
hey gise my school librery is going to name the sweet panda
November 9th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Get me a spoon, i want to eat him up!!! Yummy little boy….
November 9th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
I don’t believe he’s bristly at all. I think it’s a ploy that zoos use so we don’t try and climb the barricade to pet them. I’ll bet they’re soft and fluffy.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:15 am
i wonder what a name is (in Japan or China) to indicated the spot on his tail. if this is something unusual, then what a fitting name it would be to indicate it……..i know the names were already voted on but it is just an afterthought. thanks to the zoo for all the live coverage of the panda’s birth and growth.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:37 am
this is it, I’m leaving for California tonight and will be at the zoo on Friday for the time of my life. I’ll say hello to the family from all the panda fans. I watched the baby this morning getting his beauty sleep after all it’s hard being so darn cute.
November 10th, 2009 at 11:55 am
At 11:30 a.m. SD time – major licking, feeding, and cuddling session going on in the den. Sweet!!
#127 kathie – I doubt that the spot on plumpkins’ tail is all that unusual – Lin Ping in Chiang Mai has one as well. I do agree it is so cute.
#128 barbara – have a great time at SDZ!! Yes, please do say hello to the panda family. I hope you’ll catch them all pumped up – it is the best time. If you have an ‘action’ or ’sports’ setting on your camera, set it to that to take your still photos if the bears are tearing around their enclosures. If you want a wonderful lunch experience, go to Albert’s restaurant (#11 on the zoo map that you get at the gate.) Enjoy!!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:33 am
you are so cute i wish i had one baby pandas.
November 12th, 2009 at 1:34 am
but i cant because i am younger.
