A Virtual Cub Shower

Posted at 3:22 pm October 29, 2009 by admin

panda_exam9_1How do you throw a baby shower for a panda cub loved all over the world? Online, of course! Join the San Diego Zoo for its first-ever online baby shower. Go to the Panda Cam page for an hour of the panda-centric celebration taking place Thursday, November 5, from 11 a.m. to noon, Pacific Time.

Since our panda cub is a worldwide sensation, we’re trying this Facebook chat experiment to reach beyond San Diego and include more of the cub’s large audience of admirers. The San Diego Zoo currently has over 37,500 Facebook fans, so we are using this form of social media to create this social event. For anyone who would rather not attend the shower but still wants Panda Cam access, though, the regular Panda Cam page without the Facebook chat feature will also be available.

During this Facebook live-stream chat event, we’ll have panda keepers Kathy Hawk (pictured) and Angie Fiore on hand to answer questions, receive well wishes, and test your panda knowledge. For the questions we can’t get to in the time allowed, we’ll try to answer in future blog posts. We also plan to post the transcript of the event on our Web site. You must have a Facebook account (sign up free at facebook.com) to participate in the event via live chat, and your comments will be posted on your wall during the event. Comments will be monitored, so everyone on their best behavior. Inappropriate remarks will be deleted to keep the party friendly. Don’t have a Facebook account? You can still watch the dialog on the Panda Cam page during the shower.

During the hour-long shower, we’re planning to have a few activities:

· We’ll open with well wishes for the panda keepers, Bai Yun, and the cub.

· We want to know where you’re from, so we’ll ask participants where in the world they’re logging in for the cub shower.

· Panda keepers Kathy and Angie will be at the keyboard to answer as many panda questions as they can.

· A shower wouldn’t be complete without games! The baby will have his weekly exam the morning of the shower, so we will quiz participants about measurements taken of the panda cub that morning.

· We will also post the photos of the cub taken that morning during the exam on the Facebook page used for the shower.

While gifts are not required for this online shower, panda keepers submitted a list of things they would like to have for the baby and his family to the Zoo’s monthly Wish list. Those items will be available for purchase from the Zoo starting Sunday, November 1. They range in price from $14 to $37.

We hope all of you can come to our panda cub shower!

Thank You for the invitation to the Baby Panda shower; will be there, (on line), with bells on !
So glad to participate on this happy occasion !
Will check in on November 1st to find out what baby and family have on their Wish List .

SDZ has bent over backward teaching us all about Pandas and how they care for their young.
Thanks for this short course in Zoology !
It’s been fun and very informative.

  5. Kathy Hacker says:

My students and I will be attending the baby shower!!! We have been watching Chubby Cubby since school started. A special treat every week is to watch the new exam. We’re studying saving endangered animals and this project has tremendous response from my students. One side of my room has the different poster from SDZ that I have collected over the years. I also have several stuffed Pandas – when you’re very good, you get to hold one for the day. Thanks SDZ for all your help in saving this wonderful animal from extinction.

Love it! Awesome concept!!! I’ve said this before, the person(s) who thought of this should get a pay-raise!! Seems like you have planned this all out with a detailed agenda….One topic that was not addressed, will there be drinks/food, too? (Just Kidding, I will sip punch from the comforts of home).

My question is…will the cam remain on cubbie or Kathy and Angie during the chat? Resourceful, you folks are…

I’m looking forward to viewing the “shower” list. I hope there are quite a few things on there that we can purchase for the Yun-Gao family!

Anyways, thanks for the informative update and kudos on creativity!!

Moderator’s note: For drinks, we do have a bamboo cooler ;-) Panda Cam will remain focused on the honorees.

  9. Lilarose in Oregon says:

  19. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

i shall make a ‘pandaliscious’ cake for the festive feat!!

  20. Margaret says:

What a fabulous idea! Thanks for thinking of the worldwide SDZ panda fan club.

Unfortunately some of us have facebook blocked at work (imagine thinking that we should be working during the day instead of watching pandas!) so we won’t be able to participate in the live chat. Thank you for anticipating this and making arrangements for us to follow the transcript and watch via the panda cam site if we have access and permission to watch at that time.

It is very exciting and a great privilege to be able to talk with both Kathy and Angie who are long time panda keepers and have cared for all 4 of Bai Yun and Gao Gao’s offspring. I remember reading both of their posts when Mei Sheng went to China and how much they both cared about him. I know they care equally much for his sisters and little brother. I still remember Angie’s touching account of her visit with Mei Sheng at Wolong, and how much she was affected by him remembering her and responding to her voice as he had at SDZ. They have tremendous trust from the pandas and their dedicated care is awesome!!!!!!

  21. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

Panda cub shower -love it – I’ll be there :)

Someone in the previous blog asked about the”supposedly slow development” of panda cubs compared to other carnivores. I knew I had read something about this so after some research found this info – - it is much more efficient to give birth to very small, undeveloped cubs and raise them externally on milk than to expend energy on their development internally.

  22. Lainie says:

Haa, Haa. This should be fun. Here’s my RSVP. I’ll be there. =)

  23. Christie in San Diego says:

What a marvelous idea! A virtual panda cub shower!

I live in San Diego, but have difficulty getting out, and I haven’t actually been to the Zoo in some time, so I’ve really enjoyed following His Royal Chubbiness since he first arrived on the scene. I will definitely by online for the party; I’m looking forward to the festivities. This reminds me of an online Q&A with Koko the gorilla several years ago. I look forward to seeing HRC in person when he’s big enough to go on exhibit and has his new name. What fun this all is. Thank you!

  24. Erik from IA says:

My grandma passed away on Tuesday, October 27th. It made me really depressed. Tonight was the visitation. THe casket was white, and some of the flower stands nearby were a black. That made me think how the cub has been at the San Diego Zoo, and that he will help me to feel better. I didn’t cry the entire way home because the little cub is a sign that new life comes, and old life goes, and I just needed to see that.

    Erik

Moderator’s note: So sorry to hear about the loss of your grandma. How wonderful that a little panda cub can help ease the pain.

  25. Lucilla says:

Gosh, I thought I saw Mama Bai Yun hold Ah Wu (Chinese for No 5) and she seemed to be talking or singing a lullaby to him. I wonder if pandas do ‘talk’ to each other. I am sure they communicate through their markings, posture etc but do their vocalizations have deeper meanings? Hmmm….

  26. Pat says:

What a great idea and a great day to have it!!!

My 14th wedding anniversary is the 5th of November, and am excited and looking forward to celebrating with Bai and baby boy (and of course my other half). LOL, love the black and white affair comment. Our wedding was black and white. Wow…………………..

Looking forward to it, thank you SDZ, you are all the best!!!!!!!

  27. Phyllis says:

Congrats cubbie on another wonderful exam, Bai Yun you must be so proud!! I’m not having a good day so I’ll said goodbye for now and talk more tomorrow. Love hugs, and Kisses to beautiful Bai and our incredible baby boy.

  28. Debi in MA says:

Hey, I am going to wear my black and white polka dotted dress! I can’t wait to see this, though I know sometimes the cam is so busy you can’t even get on. I will have to get on early! Like 2am! :D I can’t wait to see what his first “toys” will be! I love showers!!!

  29. Lisa in Colorado says:

#6 You guys are too funny. LOL

  30. Liana says:

Oh what fun this will be! My daughter and youngest grandson will join me as we wish the pipsqueak and his mum all the very best. I know the oldest grandson will be upset to miss it, because he’s been reporting on Mr. Chubbs in his classroom (first grade) ever since school started. To Kathy (Post #5) congratulations on the work you’re doing in your classroom – sounds like a lot of teachers could learn a lot from you! I know my grandsons have learned a ton about pandas because of all the wonderful blog postings, and the marvelous facts that the keepers share with us!

Looking forward to this wonderful celebration!

  31. Helen Rainier says:

#6 – Moderator’s note: You have a GREAT sense of humor!

  32. Amy says:

I have been watching the Panda Cam for a few years now. This is so exciting, I so wish I could have one for my own to cuddle. He is beautiful!

  33. Chari Mercier says:

Count me in on this event!! I’ll be there at 2pm EST Florida time! Won’t be able to buy anything, but I will write in my comments and enjoy reading all of yours!
Was just on the pandacam, and I don’t know how Bai did this, but little chubby cubby in right in the middle of that “spotlight” in the den sleeping! Great job, Bai!
Well, nite nite to Bai and baby! Will be back tomorrow!
    Chari Mercier :)

  34. Dawn says:

Sad that I will be at work during the shower. But I can read the transcript later when I cpme home from work. This is such a cool idea a “Panda Shower”. The stuffed panda I bought a shopzoo.com will have the new cub’s name. I cannot wait to see what that will be. Thanks SDZ!

  35. Julie morgan says:

I’ll be at work during the shower but you can bet I’ll be on as soon as I get home to read all the great information. Thank you SDZ for letting us be such a big part of Rolly Polly’s little life.

  36. Linda / Nor Cal says:

What a wonderful idea. But I’m going to miss it too! Being away is making me crazy. And as of tomorrow night, I will have no internet access for about a week.

SDZ, you are all the best. I love how you’re “expanding” availability of the panda world. We are all getting an education.

    Thank you, SDZ.

  37. Diane says:

How cool! I wouldn’t miss it for anything. I am a fan of baby and his brother and sisters!! Bai Yun is a super Mama.

  38. diana armendariz says:

  40. Aunt ChandaPanda says:

What a Great Idea!! I’ll follow my 5th GrandPandaCub’s Celebration and enjoy the festivities!

  41. LH says:

Will that hot yellow car return for the little guy to play in?

  42. Susan (UK) says:

Sigh of relief! I may not be there to ‘watch’ the shower but at least I can buy some goodies for Bai and Little One. Looking forward to choosing a name tomorrow.

  43. Janan Huntsberry says:

Looking forward to the gift list for these wonderful Pandas!

  44. Jane says:

I have enjoyed these blogs! The cub is just adorable! Bai does an excellent job as Mom! Can’;t attend the shower ( working) but will check on the gift registry to see what is listed. You at the SDZ are just so creative- kudos to you all! Jane

  45. Tim K. says:

Thank You for the invitation to the Baby Panda shower. Just one question: Is he registered at PetsMart?

  46. Caroline says:

    Hi all,

I’ve been watching the little boy and his mom since day 1 and I’m sorry I’ve got to miss the shower because of the timezone, I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands!
Maybe if you tape the shower I can watch it the next day?

I wish you all a great time and a happy future for the little one.

Best wishes to you all and a BIG hug for my cutie ;)

Moderator’s note: There is nothing to “show” during the shower, just the dialogue of panda fans and keepers. I hope you can watch the streaming chat, as it will just be 7 p.m. Amsterdam time.

  47. celfy says:

I’d love to attend but I think that the time difference means I’ll be on the road after a day at work. Then I’ll be partying as November 5th is bonfire night in the UK. Yes we celebrate government not being overthrown!

  48. Jenny says:

Unlucky that I have a test that day, but I will read the post online as soon as possible. Little cubby cubby become more and more social now. Happy for him that he will soon go to the grass and learn to walk and eat bamboo.

  49. gina a. says:

can’t wait, my friends and i have been watching him for the last 6 weeks

  50. Mary G of MA says:

Thanks, Chari, for reminder about time difference – shower is at 2 PM EST! I’m so excited probably would have “tuned in” three hours early and wondered what happened to the shower!

  51. Barb in Surrey, BC Can. says:

A black and white baby shower…what a unique idea! I have watched this little angel as I have watched Bai’s babies from her very first exciting (but nerve-wracking) venture into motherhood to this very moment! This little guy has so many loving godparents, they cannot be counted. I will be there to share the fun shower of course. Thank you for the invitation! Keep up your awesome caregiving.

  52. Lilarose in Oregon says:

Thanks folks! For once we here on the West Coast of this great country have an event time listed for OUR time zone! Whoopie!

The San Diego Zoo’s “Virtual Cub Shower” will begin on November 5 at 11 a.m. PACIFIC TIME!

Now the rest of the world will have to adjust their time to ours!

And remember that daylight saving time in most of the United States ends at 2 a.m., local time, on Sunday, November 1.

  53. Linda says:

I will be there to see my little buddy and his mother.

  54. Lee in Vancouver says:

Help! I’m on facebook so I can share my panda pics from Thailand and Hong Kong but don’t know much more about it. How do I access the ‘live chat’ for the shower. Please help.

If I can’t get on, don’t worry, I have my Visa card all clean and shiny and raring to go.

Moderator’s note: On the day of the shower, there will be a link from the Panda Cam page to the Shower page and that page will have a link for Facebook folk to submit their comments during the shower.

  55. Dianne in Texas says:

This is a terrific idea! I don’t subscribe to Facebook and all that stuff, but I will follow on the cam page. Thank you, SDZ, for the opportunity to spread the word about conservation, and especially Giant Panda conservation, all over the world. And we have the perfect ambassador in our own little Wonder-Cub.

Thank you SDZ….for all you do!

Phyllis #27: I wish I had the magic words to make you feel better. Just think cubbie-thoughts. Get well….soon! May God bless you.

  56. Karen says:

Fantastic Idea, thank you! I watch the “little guy” every day. I love it when mom plays with him and he does a pancake move with his paws… he is so precious, this is a new love for me.

  57. Pandafan#2 says:

Baby took some steps just now, before Mom toppled him, and took him for a whirl. What fun! :)

  58. Lee in Vancouver says:

Moderator: Thanks for the info on how to link up. You are going to have to charge me for being my I T specialists also.

  59. Elizabeth in Boston says:

Oh Man! He is my first little panda I have watched on the panda cam! I was ecstatic when we found out he was a little boy! That same week I finally found out that my first little one in my belly was a little boy too! And when I was looking at the blogs today I saw you were planning a shower! You moms must all think alike because my mom planned my shower for the 7th, I will definitely be joining in and sending my well wishes… ok now back to watching the cam!!

Moderator’s note: Congratulations and good health to you, Elizabeth, as you await the arrival of your own special little boy!

  60. Bonnie A says:

What a great idea. Bai has had five babies and no gifts. She is certainly deserving of a day at the spa and some new baby supplies. I’m certain we can find volunteers to babysit while she is being pampered!

  61. Lynda Miller, Lansing, MI says:

His “royal cuteness” sure is wiggly today!! Just saw momma trying to either groom him or something and he was just a wiggling everywhere!! Can’t WAIT for tomorrow to see what the name choices are!! How Exciting!!!

  62. Lynda Miller, Lansing, MI says:

I forgot to ask something….it was mentioned about the spot on baby’s tail – can we sometime see a shot of that?? I looked through the pictures in the picture gallery, but didn’t see one of his “rump”! : )

    Thank you!!!

Moderator’s note: I ask our photographer if he can get a tail picture during next week’s exam.

  63. Elizabeth says:

I can sense the excitement building…..

Bai sure is keeping everything ’spiffy’ for her cub. Each time, I’ve tuned in over the last couple of days, she has been rearranging her den boo, all while widdle one sleeps.

Moderator, when does the great name voting process begin tomorrow? 12:01a.m. PST? Will there be someone to monitor the blog tomorrow? I think it’s going to be a pandamonium kind of day!! ;-)

Moderator’s note: Voting officially begins at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time. And the moderator will not be awake at that time ;-)

  64. Pandafan#2 says:

Are you all sure that there is a spot on his tail? It could just be the spot on the camera. I’ve seen a spot on Bai before, but it wasn’t real. :D

Moderator’s note: See paragraph #3 in Den Cleaning.

  65. Shirley from Miami says:

I’m RSVPing!! See you (virtually) there! Love Baby Panda! <3

  66. Elizabeth says:

I’m just mesmerized by him……so adroable he is! Thanks for the official ’start’ voting time, Moderator!

Booting up the computer to cast my vote is first on the agenda tomorrow morning. BTW, I sure hope there is some time off in your near future. You definitely deserve it and it is well-earned for attending to/updating the blog during the weekends and evening hours! Thank you for all that you do for us and keeping us informed!

  67. Harriet says:

Soo cute! I’ll def be there! This gave me an idea…I’m setting up a wish list for my puppy on my myregistry.com account as we speak!

  68. Hua Mei and Qi Qi says:

Hey Mom (Gramma) and Little Brother (Uncle Chublet), we’ll be looking in from China and seeing what all your humans have in store for you two. Til then, we send our love. Your daughter and granddaughter; sister and niece; Hua Mei and Qi Qi (Hao Hao)

  69. Britney says:

He is so cute. Oh i while ago Bai Yun was making her bamboo fly all over the place! ;) She went wild with her bamboo. She loves her bamboo and her baby.

  70. Mei Sheng says:

This is Mei Sheng, your son and brother. Hear you are having a shower. Hope you get lots of presents and virtual hugs and kisses.

    Love,
    Mei Sheng

  71. Danielle, NY says:

It is too bad that the pandacam at AZ is still not working. And from the update posted today, it would be fun to see what Xi Lan is up to at night. He is not only a pawfull for his mother, but since having to spend the night in the dayroom due to painting required in the other rooms, he seems to be a handful for his keepers too. From the description of his night job, we can safely say that the pandas don’t have a day-night schedule like we do, and that Xi Lan is definitively yearling male panda full of energy. I am sure Lun Lun is pleased that he can spend his energy on his night job and she might be able to sleep in peace, of course since the camera is not on, it might be pure speculation on my part, after all, Lun Lun has dark circles around her eyes…

  72. Carol King says:

I’m a little perplexed. The judges didn’t like “Gao Yun” even though it was one of the most popular submitted names. Yet, “Yun Zi” (Son of Cloud) made the final 5. Well, at least, it is part of his Mommy’s name so Bai Yun can be honored. We can only hope that Gao Gao and Bai Yun are blessed with one more baby, so our great Gao Gao can be honored too. Here’s hoping that “YUN ZI” will be our precious baby’s name. Respectfully submitted from TX.

  73. Lisa B says:

Love the name choices. Will you post a video or audio of the names being pronounced? It is important for me to hear how the name sounds before making a choice. Thanks

  74. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

I cannot wait for the Panda Cub shower. Thank you for inviting everyone.

  75. kat w says:

What would happen if we sent a plush to baby? Can he keep it to snuggle with, if you sanitize it first? I think he would look so darn cute cuddled next to a furry little panda of his own..

Then again, everyone would send him one, and he and momma wouldn’t be able to fit into the “furry” nursery….

    thank you….

  76. Lucilla says:

    Bai Yun’s Wish List

    a) High Chair for No. 5 to make sure he stays put

    b) Boxes of Leafeater Biscuits – Yum Yum

    c) Copies of videos of my family to show the folks back home and Gao Gao when we next meet

    d) Manicure and Pedicure

    e) Face Spa to clear the dark circles under my eyes

    f) Diff types of Boo to decorate the den

    g) Nice Upright chair to rest up while nursing No 5

    h) A couple of bottle of my fav scents

    i) A nice card from Gao Gao would be nice too

    j) A nice enrichment toy filled with tasty treats!!!

  77. Sabrina in AZ says:

Can someone post the 5 names? Once you vote you can’t see them anymore.

  78. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#71 – Danielle – also missing ZA’s cam – it seems to have quite a few problems :) Loved their update though :) XiLan is like other pandas & can be on tear in the middle of the night :) :) Poor momma LunLun – was she trying to sleep during this – I am a night person & have seen teen aged Tai Shan tearing around his exhibit in the wee hours :)

  79. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

9:38pm – only a few more hours to go before voting begins :)

  80. Linda / Nor Cal says:

Hi there…………..no cubbie when I just checked. I was hoping that perhaps the names where up a few hours before midnight in San Diego. I’m going to check one more time before we get off the ship; perhaps I can beg someone at the next locale to borrow their internet for a second so I can at least see the names.

Love that big brother Mei Sheng, big sis Hua Me, and Qi Qi are checking in. Perhaps Mei Sheng will send little bro a gift? A poem? Maybe the girls can write a song just for our new cubbie. Hint …. hint.

  81. pandafan-north says:

#41 – LH – Unfortunately, the yellow car belongs to the panda cousins in Atlanta. Good thought, though, maybe the AZ cousins can Fedex it to SDZ in time for the ‘plumpkins’” shower! That would be so fun – imagine ZZ trying to ‘drive’ that thing!! I thing even Su Lin would have fun with it – but she might be a tight squeeze!

11:00 a.m. Pacific is 12:00 noon Mountain – lunch time for me, so I will be glued to the screen for this most auspicious event!! Thank you SDZ!

  82. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

Bai Yun looks tired out tonight. I think she fell asleep eating her bamboo. Maybe cubbie is wearing her out a bit and she needs a rest. I hope she is ok. She picked up cubbers for a second and put him down and left, hopefully for a good rest. I cannot wait for our little plumpkin to get his name, he deserves it. I will get them a gift and hopefully Bai can get some well deserved rest! When will Bai get a good exam? Is she due for one? We all want our mother of the year to be well. Obviously this is my first cub that I have watched and mommy just seems to be worn out all the suden and I am concerned. I know the staff is always on top of this but by nature I am a worrywart! Sorry!

Moderator’s note: Please don’t worry. The keepers would notify our vet staff immediatley if they thought anything in the slightest was wrong with Bai Yun.

  83. Frances in NYC says:

Hmmm–just got a look at the 5 names–must wait and see which one grows on me.

  84. Cindy in NorCal says:

I can’t wait for the shower, should be fun! He is so cute regardless of his names.

Question: I haven’t seen anymore mention of his webbed feet. Is the webbing still there or will it go away as he grows? Could it affect his ability to eat boo?

Thank you all (SDZ staff, moderators, meerkats) for all you do and for sharing these amazing animals with us. I can’t wait to see the names….

Moderator’s note: His father still has the webbing on his back feet. It doesn’t affect his bamboo consumption at all ;-)

  85. Linda / Nor Cal says:

It’s 11:30 pm Tahiti time, and I just checked the website for the names………..IT WON’T LOAD. Frances #83 can see them…….I can’t. No more internet until after the voting!! But got to see Mommy and Baby’s bottoms on the cam. That will have to do!

  86. Heather says:

    TO KEEPERS AND STAFF..

This note is for you only and does not need to be posted here on the blog. (I didn’t know how to get in touch with you, any other way.)

Please check out your video tapes of 03:10 am. your time this morning. I have never seen such brisk play between Bai Yun and Chubbie Cubbie, as I saw this morning. This is delightful to watch.

You really get a sense of how big cubbie is, when he is laying on momma’s chest playing and trying to nurse. These pictures are pricelss. Baby was chewing on mommie’s foot and mommie was chewing on baby.

    Thanks so much,
    Heather from Virgnia

  87. Carole A says:

    Moderator,
I don’t know if anyone else has the same problem, but I am unable to see the names or to vote has the page does not load properly.
    thanks

Moderator’s note: I’m having trouble here at home, too. I’ve alerted our Web Team.

  88. celfy says:

Not keen on 熊伟 Xióng Wěi (syong wei): extraordinary bear as this makes me think of Winne the Pooh. And I don’t think that 小龙 Xiǎo Lóng (siao long): little dragon will suit as he may be little now but he won’t be forever.

I had to read 福圣 Fú Shèng (fu sheng): blissful San Diego twice and I read Feng Shui first time :D

For those who have asked the names are

福圣 Fú Shèng (fu sheng): blissful San Diego

小龙 Xiǎo Lóng (siao long): little dragon

熊伟 Xióng Wěi (syong wei): extraordinary bear

永祥 Yǒng Xiǎng (yong siang): eternally blessed

云子 Yún Zǐ (yun zih): son of cloud

I haven’t cast my vote yet as I am tied between the last two I love both meanings the look of the characters for Yong Xiang and the look of the letters for Yun Zi. My problem is do I honour the hero mother or do I bless the baby?

  89. IHN from Asia says:

In the comments of previous article ” Den Cleaning” , a fellow pandafan Rosemarie asked if there are videos of a panda’s training session, there are three videos in youtube showing the training of our familiar pandas :

Mei Sheng’s training ( by cutesmallfuzzy)

Tai in training on Thursday March 1

    Yang’s Training, Part 1 (& Part 2)

  90. Melissa says:

Thanks again for letting us take part in naming the cub. I find myself trying to figure out which one is the favored name of the Panda Team as I contemplate my own favorite. I was taken by surprise by “Little Dragon” but after thought and review, it’s a great choice because Chinese dragons symbolize power and strength (”potent and auspicious powers,” according to one source), amongst other things. I’m so looking forward to the cub’s big naming day.

I’ve posted on picture of the cub’s tail spot on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/44213153@N06/4060125243/

  91. Panda Annie says:

i really really dont know what name to vote for… i like little dragon, but none of them i love exactly. hmmm

  92. Panda Annie says:

    what should i vote for!?!?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

  93. Susan (UK) says:

SDZ, you’ve done yourself proud with the November Wish List. What a choice, where to start! In the end the whole Gao and Bai family had to have something, after all we don’t want any jealousy do we!! And then, my dear Polar Bears had to get something too. Thank you for giving us some lovely goodies to choose from. Hope the Not So Little One and his family enjoy them. Somehow, I don’t think they’re going to last very long. Now I’m going to look at the names that have been chosen and see which one I like.

  94. Danielle, NY says:

    # 53 Linda, Thanks for the warning. Here it is.
福圣 Fú Shèng (fu sheng): blissful San Diego
小龙 Xiǎo Lóng (siao long): little dragon
熊伟 Xióng Wěi (syong wei): extraordinary bear
永祥 Yǒng Xiǎng (yong siang): eternally blessed
云子 Yún Zǐ (yun zih): son of cloud
    # 83 Frances, I will let one grow on me too…

  95. maryellen from Fla says:

Hope I’m not bothering anyone on today, so special. I have already picked my choice and have voted.

Question: are pandas right or left handed like humans or are they ambidextrous.

    thanks,
    me

  96. ei says:

@ Carol #72-I have a suspicion that Gao Yun was eliminated more for it’s feminine connotation than anything else. Several native speakers posted that it would be inappropriate-one vehemently enough that I wondered if it has a slang negative feminine connotation. Here’s hoping Yun Zi develops a strong following!

  97. Mary Lou says:

Me, too. No one name stand out to me so will keep thinking about it all day. Have to decide by tomorrow because will be out of town for a week and no computer with me! Will also miss seeing our ‘little’ guy and he will be sooooo much bigger by next Saturday.

  98. Danielle, NY says:

    # 78 Maureen in Stanwood MI, I normally try to sleep during the night but I have been watching Lin Ping when possible. They seem to have pandacam problems quite often as well. But since it is the night there during the day here, I know that Lin Ping and her mother Lin Hui can be active or asleep in the same way than the pandas are during the day here.
Since I wrote my post yesterday, I have been wondering if Xi Lan is trying to send a message to the keepers that he can’t find the midnight snacks and that they need to leave more supplies for the night. Or perhaps Lun Lun, being a wise panda mother, is sending Xi Lan to search for his food to prepare him for his life in the wild, and while he is doing that, she can sleep. Smart panda mom!!

  99. Carole in San Diego says:

Yun Zi, Yun Zi, Yun Zi, Yun Zi –Son of Cloud. What a wonderful way to honor this exceptional panda mother, Bai Yun. While I would have preferred Gao Yun, this is a very good second choice. Easy to pronounce and pleasant to the ear as well.

  100. Elizabeth says:

I’m amazed that “Yun Zi” made the top five list. It is an honor to have Bai’s name included, but why not Gao’s name too in some other name combination for the public to vote on? Especially, when it was mentioned over half the submissions desired for Gao’s name to be included. Maybe I read too much in between the lines and was under the impression “Yun” nor “Gao” would not be included in the final five names and the cub was going to have his own unique name. Anyways, I’m leaning towards “Xióng Wěi” (extraordinary bear).

  101. tanda says:

Thank you for posting the names everyone. Like some of the rest of you, I am going to have to let one grow on me!

  102. Tiny says:

#86 Heather – Haha!! I was online at that time and saw all of the Momma / Baby thing. It was just awesome :) I have been noticing this last week or so that after midnight it is like “Pandas Gone Wild”. Momma Bai storms into the den dragging a huge branch of bamboo and wants to play and spruce the place up. LOL poor lil Cubbie, all he wants to do is sleep but Momma has just had a Grande Espresso or something :) But last night Momma Bai was especially playful. She was twirling baby on her feet, nibbling his ears, his legs. I am thinking that maybe she is making him exercise? Haha!! She sure is giving him a workout. He was popping her in the nose and Bai would just smile at him and turn him upside down :)

  103. Lilarose in Oregon says:

For those who are still unhappy about not using parts of both of our cub’s parents’ names, there is a reason. The two together don’t make sense, don’t mean anything, and the meaning is very important. We have to look at it from the Chinese point of view, not how it looks/sounds in English. I think Yun Zi (son of cloud) takes care of the problem! Of course, many folks are voting who don’t understand that connection (son of cloud) if they don’t know Bai Yun’s meaning. So if you see lots of votes for the other names, that might be why!

  104. tanda says:

I watched the panda cam time lapse and it didn’t show that play time, it sounds sweet to say the least! Tiny I think you are right about the exercise. Still waters run deep so this little laid back fellow just might be not so laid back when he gets more developed. I am in love with Bai Yun, she is simply the best of everything! What a mom!!!!!!!!!!!!

  105. Helen Rainier says:

The names page is not loading for me and I hope it will soon. Thanks to those who did post the names as I can now think about it – but I have a favorite in mind.

  106. chantal says:

Hopefully I’ll be with you all, even if I’m in south of France… special date 5th nov : I’ll be there :) je serai là !
    bisous

  107. Sondra in Snohomish says:

    Thank you all!

  108. P Wong says:

Just a little note regarding “Xiao Long” as a male name. Martial artist star Bruce Lee’s Chinese stage name in Pinyin is Li Xiaolong. This means many Asians may associate this name with Bruce Lee.

  109. Robert J says:

The blog ‘to name a panda’ said they wanted to give him a name all his own, hence, combinations like gao yun was out, yet here we are with Yun Zi. hardly seem fair to gao gao. and the rest of the choices aren’t that thrilling either. what a let down. i’d rather Frank got his way and he was called Xiao Fei (’lil’ chub) sounds like some bias behind the scenes is in the works here. speaking of which, i can’t imagine which of these 5 names the zoo people are sooooo excited about. i think i’ll just make up a name of my own and call him that. big let down here.

  110. Marion (Scotland) says:

I voted for Fu Sheng so our new little boy would share a name with his beloved brother Mei Sheng. I also liked Xiao Long and Yun Zi.

  111. Brandy says:

Hi everybody, hope you all are well and happy as we join together to name our little guy. Something we all have been waiting for, for sooo long. Thanks to SDZ staff for all your efforts to include us. Enjoy to all who are able to appear there in person but we want a minute by minute report of your visit. :=) #76-Lucilla just too funny. #76 Celfy you always keep us informed. I too could not get connected to vote. Just stayed on loading mode after many attempts. I was so disheartened to think how long I would have to wait to even know the entries, no less not beable to vote. I hope that will change before days end. Then there was your blog with the 5 names. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. You gave me alot to think about. I too favored Goa Yun for the obvious reasons. But after your explanation I completley changed my mind. I believe the best we can all do for our little guy is send him into his life being eternally blessed, as we all have been with his mere presence. So Yng Xlng it must be!

  112. Christine says:

Wow, I am disappointed with the name selection. I also was under the impression that Yun or Gao was not allowed in naming of Cubbie. I am not sure how son of Yun is any better then a name that honored both parents contribution to the new cub.

  113. Danielle, NY says:

#86 Heather and # 102 Tiny. Are you ever lucky to have watch that!! I hope DoxieMom or someone else has recorded that play session and will post a video on YouTube. I just checked and there isn’t anything posted yet.

  114. Brandy says:

Oh how relieved. Its working you can vote. Thank you for repairing the problem.

  115. Tiny says:

#105 Helen – About the name page not loading for you, I would try checking all of the Windows Updates. Your browser or security might be an update behind possibly? Hope it all works well for you soon :) Of course my name didn’t make the final list, but I found a suitable substitute…

Moderator’s note: Our Web Team has fixed the problem. Helen should now be able to vote with her current settings. Thank you, Tiny, for the suggestion, as that probably would have worked, too ;-)

  116. Shirley says:

A name meaning “Extraordinary Bear” is perfect for the little cub. How extrardinary that he has brought so many people from all over the world together to celebrate the wonder of pandas. Certainly those same people will spread the word about saving these extraordinary animals.

  117. Candy C. in Des Moines says:

Just watching chubby cubby sleeping with his head kind of tucked under him….he reminds me of a double-stuffed oreo or perhaps a s’more. Just me? Maybe that’s one of the reasons I could just eat him up!!!

  118. lisa says:

“Yun ZI”…How perfectly it flows, and SO fits him.

  119. Jeri says:

I too had favored Gao Yun. I haven’t voted yet, but I am leaning towards Yun Zi.

  120. Britney says:

Oh i am going to be happy when he gets his name. ;) I love him.

  121. shayna says:

I want Big Boy to have a happy life. I am going with a name that will bless him.

  122. Pat says:

Thank you for allowing me to share in naming Bai Yun and Gao Gao’s son.
All five names are great choices, and no matter what the winner turns out to be,
some ppl will be disappointed and some not. What matters is, he will have an honorable
name, and a name to answer too now, from you wonderful folks at SDZ.

Have a great day……………………..I hope Son of Cloud wins………………………………..

  123. Page says:

A bit different from the naming and shower topics (wish I weren’t working then!): Is there a larger habitat for pandas at the Wild Animal Park?

Off to vote, or to keep thinking? The big question of the day!

Moderator’s note: The pandas are at the San Diego Zoo only. The Zoo’s Wild Animal Park is 35 miles to the north.

  124. Joan says:

What a wonderful assortment to choose from on the Wish List!!

It was great to be able to donate a toy for the baby (Yun Zi perhaps), but also wonderful to see the smaller increments available for the purchase of the maternity PolarCam.

I love it when the SDZ breaks down the larger priced items into smaller increments. There was a ton of money raised towards the “Boo Cooler” in $5 increments. Totally affordable for anyone wishing to help!

It’s wonderful hearing from my fellow Canadians on this super blog as well as others from around the world!!

These pandas are truly loved worldwide.

  125. Frances in NYC says:

I agree with Danielle #113–I hope someone will post those happy hours that time-lapse didn’t catch.

Nope–still can’t decide. I like the sound of one name but the meaning of another. No clear choice.

  126. Fonsia says:

Oh goodness, I’m torn between Fu Sheng and Yun Zi. I love the idea of pairing him with his big brother, and he certainly is blissful (although I don’t see how “San Diego” fits in that name.) “Little Dragon” is cute, but there won’t be much that is little about this bear for long! I think he’s going to be a giant like grandpa Pan Pan. The two other names could fit with any darling cub.

I also love commemorating Bai with “Yun Zi.” Bai deserves it, especially coping with a new baby at her age. I think it would be wonderful that she lives on in her (probably last) cub.

Guess I’m leaning toward “Yun Zi,” but I’ll contemplate it for awhile. Too important to make a snap decision! (I’m betting that was the choice of the keepers, especially as “Gao Yun” just isn’t appropriate in Chinese–I know they all adore Bai.)

  127. Reenie in Atlanta says:

I love the name Yun Zi….it honors Mama Bai, and after all, she’s the one who has done all the marvelous work with her babies. I adore Gao Gao, but let’s face it, a little fun for him, and months and months of work for Bai!

  128. KWest says:

#108 P Wong – Would this make royal cuteness Kung Fu Panda?
    Sorry, couldn’t resist. ;)

  129. joan said says:

    still unable to vote.
LOVE yun zi…. can call him “sonny” that was my husband’s (now deceased) nickname.
hoping i will be able to vote.
    many thanks
    joan

Moderator’s note: Joan, I’ll contact you personally to see if I can help.

  130. cyn says:

Oooh decisions…decisions…. I can see why the name Gao Yun or Bai Gao may not have been used, since the bears are taught to respond to their names in training. Would there be any confusion if cubbie and mom/dad heard their name being called at the same time?

These are great name choices!!! Personally, I’m torn between Fú Shèng (homage to elder brother Mei Sheng, perhaps? Plus this little guy is the epitome of blissful!) and Yún Zǐ (homage to Bai Yun). Xiǎo Lóng – first thing I thought of was “So Long” which is what we want to wait a very, very long time to say to this little guy. Xióng Wěi and Yǒng Xiǎng – well…all of our bears are extraordinary and eternally blessed, aren’t they?

Like most of the rest of you, I’m just going to think on it until my heart tells me which to vote for. As for which one is the favorite of SDZ staff – can I buy a clue? :-)

  131. kathy, canada says:

The voting selection comes up beautifully now thank you for fixing it. I really like all the names and am currently torn between two of them so I’m going to think on it a bit and see which name I will pick. I imagine trying to please thousands of people with a name is quite impossible and after all it’s the little guy that has to live with it so it should be special. Well done on giving us some unique names to choose from and to those who suggested them!

To the few who have voiced displeasure, we can call him any nickname we like from home but let’s keep in mind that he’s not a ‘pet’, he should have a dignified name that shows China how much we love this panda family and how much we appreciate that they trust us with the well-being of their precious pandas.

  132. Lilarose in Oregon says:

One thing for sure, folks! And I know this from past voting experience.

Our little boy WILL get one of those five names!

Imagine going through your first few months of life as an unnamed entity! During the “hippy years” I knew personally of two couples who didn’t name their child until it was two years old!

Our giant panda cub won’t have to deal with such humilitation!

  133. njr_in_sd says:

Just checked out the wish list – https://secure3.convio.net/sdzoo/site/EcommerceCheckout/1422062680?store_id=1221
What a great selection of fun things for the new cubbie and for all of the pandas! And be sure to check out all of the list – some great things for other animals as well.

Voted on my choice of a name, still kind of bummed that Gao Yun wasn’t a choice.

  134. Suzanne (the other one) says:

Moderator, will we be getting some sort of audio on how each name sounds? I’m thinking that will help in my decision … not real sure otherwise.

    Thanks!

Moderator’s note: No audio at this time.

  135. Isis from Acapulco says:

It is amazing how this panda cub experience makes us learn even more about the beauty of life. Nature is tenderness and hope, life will prevail… this is what pandas teach us everyday…

  136. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide, Australia says:

Good Morning everyone – finally I can vote. My names didn’t make it but that is ok
Yun Zi is my choice – doesn’t matter though whatever his name – he will always be “Chubby Cubby”
Thank you Bai for being such an extraordinary mother.See you all at the shower

  137. Debi in MA says:

Well, it took me a minute to warm up to any of the names. Like others said, they just were not quite what I expected. But Cloud, regardless of whether it is part of Bai’s name or not, does fit him. He is placid, puffy and calm like a floating cloud. He has that peaceful nature. Peaceful Cloud might have been more fitting, unless he fools us all and turns into a very active bear! At least the white puffy, rolly pollyness of him fits “cloud”. So, for me, it is “Yun Zi”. I think it vocally sounds the nicest of all the names, too. I have about 5 different nicknames for him, anyhow, and puffy is one of them! “Yun Zi” is presently doing the Panda Bear polka around the den….

You put your left hind in,
You take your left hind out,
You put your left hind in,
And you slip and slide about,
You do the Panda Polka and you move around the den,
    That’s what it’s all about!

You put your right paw in,
You take your right paw out,
You put your right paw in,
And you shake it all about,
You do the Panda Polka and you roll across the boo,
    That’s what it’s all about!

You do the Panda Polka……slither, slip and slide…
You do the Panda Polka……slither, slip and slide…

  138. Jeslyn in San Diego says:

Checked after midnite last nite and again this morning and the names didn’t apear.
They have now and I am stumped…….like the first on list….so that when he goes back to China….he can take a part of San Diego with him…….but its harder to say and hard to write in Chinese.
The last name is good, easy to say, easy to write in Chinese……
I just can’t make up my mind. I didn’t think I would have such a difficult choice…..have been trying to decide all day…….
This is awful…….which way to vote……!!!!!

  139. xiaohan@PA says:

As a native Chinese, I followed my instinct with Chinese naming, Fu Sheng I favor the best. Sounds very boy and also manly when he grows up. Also I chuckled when I saw it, reminding me a famous Chinese legendary cartoon image ” 齐天大圣“, that “King of the Monkeys”. Well, I want Fu Sheng to be a “King of the Pandas”.

My second vote will be Yun Zi, very cute and elegant, with a hint of ancient Chinese culture.

  140. Jane says:

I now have cast my vote! I would like to know which name was the favorite from the staff after the voting is over. I know one stood out to me also. Jane

  141. Liana says:

Elizabeth (#100) and other posters, I’m with you that we should NOT have had a partial parent’s name included in the list. The cub is his own being, his own uniqueness, and certainly while a product of two spectacularly wonderful pandas, a little being in his own right. And I’m also decidedly underwhelmed by the name choices. I’m guessing the keepers went for Xiǎo Lóng little dragon. I couldn’t choose between that and Xióng Wěi Extraordinary bear, and finally chose Xiong Wei first because Mr Chubbs IS extraordinary, but secondly, because I like the way it sounds. Can’t wait for the naming ceremony!

  142. Claudia says:

wow what a build up, and I am not thrilled with the name selection. But, its not my bear. To me he will always be “Roly Poly” “Chubby Cubbie” “Panda in the Moon”. Notice how Chinese names are grandious and our names are cute? what ever

  143. Sarah says:

Ohhhhh………. at 14:50 pandacam time Bai Yun just left and Cubby walked a few steps!

  144. Sharon in Fort Worth says:

Like others, I was all set to vote this morning and the choices would not load. Figuring that it was still early morning in San Diego, I just went out on my Saturday morning round of shopping & errands. When I came back this afternoon, the choices were there. And like some of you I was underwhelmed by the selections and puzzled by what was the consensus choice of the SDZ staff.

Fu Sheng – too much like Mei Sheng and Fu Long. Xiao Long – we already have one dragon, Fu Long. Yun Zi – probably meant to honor Bai Yun, who is certainly deserving, but the name & the sound just doesn’t do it for me. From the 2 remaining I picked Xiong Wei – extraordinary bear. I like the sound of the pronunciation, the name seems more unique, and it befits our cub. First of all, every panda is an extraordinary bear – they are an extraordinary species. And our little #5 (I’m liking the nickname Cinco de Baio more & more) has been extraordinary in his growth milestones.

Well everybody will have their preference and their reasons – that’s what voting is all about. And now the nail-biting wait for the result.

  145. Carole A says:

I was finally able to vote for my favorite panda name. I was also happy to be able to see the panda wish list. I already purchased a toy for the baby and his big sister Su lin. I hope to be able to participate in the baby panda shower on the 5th. All will depend on my schedule.

  146. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide, Australia says:

1545 your time – just saw the little black tip on baby’s tail.bai and baby are having some quality wash and play time – very cute. must go and do some housework – I am in panda overload at the moment!!

  147. Teresa in TN says:

cool, I just got home and first thing I did was turn on my pc and vote on the names. I voted for Yun Zi in honor of Bai Yun. Would have voted for Gao Yun if we had been given the choice. Bai is such a great mom that I think at least one of her cubs should have part of her name. Am sad that there wasn’t a choice with part of Gao’s name though. He’s such a sweet bear and should be honored too.

  148. Pat R says:

it’s amazing how momma flops that bamboo around while she’s eating it in the den and all the while avoids hitting lil’ pudgy one! Such a good mom! cute!

  149. Chari Mercier says:

Hi, you guys! I just voted for a name for the cub tonite. I also had trouble on the Name the Panda page with the names getting loaded in late last nite after 3am EDT my time. So, I waited till today to get on the page to vote for a name, and it was working like it should. After I voted, there was a note that said that 3,971 votes were already in! WOW!!! That was quick! Probably more than that now as I write this! I voted for Xiao Long=little dragon. This name was pretty close to the one that I put in for nomination—Long Shan=dragon mountain. So, since Long Shan didn’t make the final list of names, I went with the one that was pretty close to it. This list of names was not too impressive, but it was a good list of names to choose from. There are a couple that will take awhile to grow on people! But, one of them will have the most votes, and the cub will have a name on November 17!
I was on the pandacam a little bit ago, and the cub was by himself; then, went back to it and saw Bai giving her cub either a bath or a bunch of lovin’s!
Well, gonna go and get back to the cam!
    Chari Mercier :)

  150. Dawn says:

I voted for a name, bought 2 shower gifts. I am all set….lol. Reading a lot of what other’s had to say, I had to really think about what name to choose. The 5 were NOT what I had expected. The little dragon & San Diego names just didn’t seem right to me. He IS extraordinary & blessed but those names were too difficult. So I opted for Yun Zi. He is the son of a cloud. A wonderful Cloud. In honor of his Mom who takes such good care of him ( as well as 4 others it seems). She is amazing! Yun Zi sounds like a playful name and the characters are simple. I hope it wins.
When I feel sad, this little cubby & his Mom cheer me up too. I had no trouble voting. You made it easy, SDZ.

  151. Lisa says:

Is there any way that Animal Planet can broadcast the naming ceremony for the new cub? I watched when Tai Shon was named at the National Zoo. He has so many panda cub afficionados I would like to be able to tape his naming ceremony like I did Tai Shon.

  152. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

Oh no, here we go again – everytime a cub is to be named & we get to submit names & then vote way tooooo mannnny get bent out of shape because their name wasn’t picked, or they didn’t like the final 5 names to vote on. Folks- have told you all before so listen up good – China gets to decide on the final 5 names – And with all our other panda cubs – they grow into their names & most of us will have a favorite nickname – I’m not real fond of Zheng Zheng but Miss ZZ suits her to a T ( Or a Z) :)

  153. SAN DI says:

I really think people should listen to the names before they vote. While the concept of Yún Zǐ is nobile, putting the sounds of the two words together does not flow very well.

If you go to http://usa.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=1&wdqb=zi and scroll down to the fifth word, click on the speaker to hear the word Zǐ. You can do the same for Yún.

To me, I feel like a fish out of water trying to say those two words together!

  154. shayna says:

I was distraught when I first saw the names. I tried to focus on the positive. We were looking at the names of the other pandas and their meanings. Mei Sheng-Beautiful Life, Hui Mei-China, USA… such beautiful meanings. I suggested Friendship, for friendship between China and USA. I know dragon is in the Chineese culture. I find the Chineese culture fascinating, although, I don’t know that much. I have seen a Bruce Lee movie, in regards to a comment earlier. He was an impressive fighter. The only thing is, dragon is another name for satan. You can check out Revelation, satan is referred to as a dragon. To me that is just yucky to think of calling that sweet little guy a dragon. He is such a sweet little bear. By the Grace of God, he will get a loving name.

  155. Britney says:

to Shayna#154, I agree with you, i don’t find the name yucky but i don’t think it fits him. He will not be little for long, and he is not even close to being a dragon. He is such a cute little guy. I voted for eternally blessed, i think that fits him, and it was better than the others. I hope he gets a name that fits him. :)

  156. Frances in NYC says:

Thank you, Debi #137, for putting panda lyrics to that song for me–I had been trying and just couldn’t do it.

I finally decided on Yun Zi, but if I had voted at another time, I might have picked one of the other names. I’m guessing that the keepers’ favorite would be Fu Sheng, because I’m sure they miss Mei Sheng. When I voted, there had already been almost 3500 votes–I’m guessing there will be 5000 or so before the voting is over.

In any case, little Cinco de Bai-o is still adorable, and since Mom has come into the den and wants to sleep, he has suddenly gotten wide awake and wiggly. So cute.

  157. Claudia says:

This is the most current blog, hey an unrelated to “names” question, ummm my CAT for example likes to sometimes bury his head in his bed like we put our hands over our face you know? and he can breath I guess cause he does it at night, so I see the baby cub and also mom, sort of sit on their head, or lean down in a ball and lay on their head, is that an illusion from looking down on them from the camera, or do they like to “sit on their head”. Mom used to hold him on his head so his neck is turned all the way in, like break my spine mom! or maybe they are curved????and just naturally curve in a ball like a porcupine

  158. Dianne in Texas says:

I don’t remember hearing all the grumbling, 2 years ago, naming Zhen Zhen. We all had a favorite name for this little guy. Mine didn’t make the list either, but I understand why it didn’t. It had female connotations. Names are very important in the Chinese culture. They should be honorable.

P Wong or xiaohan@PA, could you please explain, once again, to the grumblers WHY Gao Yun is not acceptable as a name for a male?

Whichever name is chosen, from this list, will be a suitable and honorble name for this wonderful cub.

Thanks again, to all of you who worked so hard to make this selection. They are all wonderful. (My personal favorite is Yun Zi.)

  159. Carole in San Diego says:

While I was disappointed that Gao Yun was not on the short list, #127 Reenie in Atlanta expressed it perfectly — ” a little fun for him (Gao), but months and months of work for Bai Yun” — 18 months to be exact.
So, Yun Zi should be the name. Let ’s honor this super mom!

  160. Marjorie says:

Love all the info about this baby Panda, and have voted for a name.Would love to join in the ’shower’
but do not know what time it will be shown on my computer,as I live in CYPRUS.Can you give me any
idea,as time varies so much in different parts of the world.Good Luck to Pandas and all Staff, and many
thanks for all you do.Pandas are my favourite animals, after Cats.

Moderator’s note: You are 10 hours ahead of San Diego time, so come to the shower at 9 p.m.

  161. Brandy NY says:

Good morning all. I have a question for many of our experts out there. I’m sure you will get a good laugh from it but I’ve seen this a few times and my curiosity got the best of me and I have to know. In the morning when I see SuLin dancing at a door waiting for her treat or breakfast, which is funny to watch, she receives a bag with I thought was buscuits. But when she tears open this bag and the contents are on the floor I thought I saw the contents moving. OK stop laughing! I just assumed it was the camera. Knowing Pandas can be carniverous I thought these things could be a Slug or some kind of worm. Does anyone know what I am seeing? Now you can laugh:=) I am just writing this.

  162. Lucilla says:

I finally saw Mama Bai twirl No 5 around and flip him around. Now he is giving as good as he gets. Both pandas looked like they were having the time of their lives. Mama really looked like she was smiling with pride at her robust son. I know this is anthropomorphic but the 2 pandas looked like they were gigling and enjoying each other’s company. Heart warming!

  163. Mary from Brooklyn says:

Debi #137 — The Panda Polka cracked me up. I also like your reasoning about “Cloud”. I’m still trying the various names to see what I think might fit. Since I didn’t submit any names, I have no stake in any of them.

Jan in Adelaide — Hope you get to be first in line to see your pandas when they go on display. You will absolutely adore them.

To the SDZ team, many thanks for the care with which you (and the Chinese) chose the names. They have certainly made my choice difficult. But he’ll grow into whatever name we all choose, of that I am sure.

  164. Linda says:

I agree with Maureen #152. A panda by any other name would still be as delightful and precious! Besides, the panda staff spent a good deal of time going through the thousands of submissions each day. I’m not sure which name I like the best. I liked Yun Zi at first, but I read that naming a baby for antoher person is practically taboo in Chinese culture. On the other hand, I like this name because it can be interpreted independently of Bai – the baby is like the son of a cloud in that he is so soft and quiet, but at the same time, clouds are forces of nature and can rumble and rain! The image of him as the son of a cloud in this sense if very nice – kind of like the son of Zeus, the thunder god! The other names are also very nice, although I don’t like the idea of naming the baby after San Diego, since the baby is so loved all over the world! Sigh – I will have to think about it a bit more before casting my vote :)

Baby is getting so big and strong now – yesterday I saw him make a very valiant effort at crawling. I’ve also been enjoying these late night/early morning rumble sessions with mom. It must all be part of the panda training. I wonder how much of this is hormonally driven and how much is mommy responding to cues that baby is getting bigger and stronger and needs more of a challenge. The scenes of the two of them sleeping belly-to-belly or nose-to-nose or nose-to-belly are just precious :D

  165. Pandafan#2 says:

Why don’t you change “Blissful San Diego” to “Napping Bear?” He’s going to go to China, and all he does is nap, even during the exams! When is the cub going to have his next exam anyways????? Good luck with the time change! (Especially to that napping bear)

Moderator’s note: As the post indicated, his next exam will be the morning of the shower, Nov. 5.

  166. Dianne in Texas says:

For those of you asking about the black spot at the tip of his tail….right now at 8:34 SDZ time…..he’s lying on his back, waving it at you. ;)

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t at least one of Bai Yun & Gao Gao’s offspring have that black tip?

  167. susan says:

I totally agree w/ San Di #153. I think we need to really hear the sound of each word as they are different and unique. Like the word “long” for dragon. it sounds more like “lone” in a lower tone. Thanks so much for sharing the link!!

  168. Jessie in LR says:

I agree with SAN DI #153 — according to the link provided, the pronunciation of Yún Zǐ is quite unattractive.

  169. Elizabeth says:

    Moderator,

Is there any way the gift list can be a little more specific in description? For example, for Gao Gao it states “Dad Panda Toy: Don’t forget about dad Gao Gao, who would love this toy to play with! [ 21 needed ]“.

What exactly is the toy that Gao Gao be getting? I would just like to know what my money will be buying, so if I ever see the item on cam….I can say, “Ooooh, I purchased one of those for the bears to enjoy”. Thanks!

Moderator’s note: I’ll forward your question to the Wish List team.

  170. Lilarose in Oregon says:

#152 Maureen in Stanwood MI–I agree with you BUT I am the lonely voice out here in PandaLand who tries to explain that our Miss Zhen Zhen is not a ZZ. She is “Jun Jun” which is how the staff pronounces her name (as well as the Chinese).

Of course she can be called whatever people want, but I just want to keep pumping away at this because alot of bloggers truly think it is pronounced “Zen Zen.” (yes, yes, you can say it any way YOU want!).

I voted for “Son of Cloud,” but I will accept any name as long as our baby gets something!

  171. Elizabeth says:

Moderator, #167. Thank you for forwarding on my question. I can always purchase flowers for the yard. However, I would rather purchase an enrichment item for one of the bears. Thanks again!

  172. Elizabeth says:

2:10 EST. It’s wonderful to see Su Lin high in her tree! Thanks CO!

  173. Liana says:

Shayna #154, in the Celtic tradition, the dragon is the wisdom carrier. As for your reference to the dragon being another name for satan, the actual reference is that the angel -BEFORE being cast out – was like a dragon, who was revered for his innate wisdom. I prefer to go with the Celtic definition. And if you look at how the little one is with his mum, you just know there is the impish dragon inside him. He waits till she’s asleep, then he’s WIDE awake and rarin’ to go, poking, prodding, playing! That’s so like a dragon…. quiet and surreptitious then fully alert and the move!

Either way, he will grow into whatever name he receives, and we’ll all still love him, no matter what! He could be just Number Five, and we’d all still ooohhh and aaaah over him!

  174. Susan (UK) says:

Why oh why is everyone nit-picking? Over a name! Sometimes us human beings can be truly awful! Enjoy choosing this gorgeous little cub’s name and if you don’t like any of the choices, don’t vote – simple as that. I don’t usually speak out but things are getting a bit silly as I’m sure some of you will agree.

  175. Lilarose in Oregon says:

About the Chinese Dragon: the Dragon in China is and has been for eons an important entity. I suggest if you are confused between the Western Dragon and the Chinese Dragon that you do a Google (or whatever) about Chinese Dragons. You will be surprised at how revered the dragon is in Chinese culture and how important it is to daily Chinese life.

One of the things this blog is all about is “culture.” We bloggers are bonded through a common little being, and that is Bai Yun’s newest cub. Along with our devotion to this little cub, we are also here to LEARN about the world of the Giant Panda, and that is all about China.

Thus it is important that we be respectful of the culture of our Giant Pandas, because he and his relatives are surely part of the Chinese culture. And along with this respect we must be tolerant, gracious, and grateful toward the Chinese people and their wonderful and ancient culture, which includes the Chinese Dragons.

    Puff!

  176. Barbara in Midwest says:

Okay, I’ve been reading all the comments here about the names. I’m glad I haven’t voted yet. Just like a lot of you (mostly because the majority seemed to want Gao Yun) my first instinct was to vote for Yun Zi. But then after reading these remarks, I’m thinking it will sound a lot like Fonzy, and no telling what unflattering nicknames he might have. I also don’t like the concept of the dragon. So I am in a quandary. Our sweet baby needs a powerful name for the powerful panda he will become.
Also, I am among those who will be at work during the shower, but I hope to read the dialog later. It’s a great idea.

  177. Carole in San Diego says:

#154 Shayne — Dragons are esteemed by Eastern cultures — quite the opposite from Western cultures. The Chinese see them as gentle creatures who live in the East and bring the rain. That said, Yun Zi (Son of Cloud or Bai Yun) gets my vote.

  178. celfy says:

153 San Di – I listened to the pronounciation and don’t like it either, it’s not as pretty as it looks
158 Dianne – there was a lot of grumbling on the forum when it came to naming Zhen Zhen as the favourite name (Birght Star) was vetoed as it can also mean celebrity and all the pandas are celebrities. Which made me wonder at Extraordinary Bear being on the list as all pandas are extraordinary bears.
    170 Lilarose – you’re not a lone voice :)

I voted for Eternally Blessed in the end as I think it is the name that would suit the most throughout the cubs life. I had been torn between this name and Son of Cloud but knowing the lack of tradition in China for naming after the parents helped me with my decision.

  179. Carol (the other one) says:

Baibee looks like he’s sucking his thumb right now, he is just too cute! I am torn between Xiao Long and Xiong Wei. So hard to decide! I suspect Yun Zi is going to win, but it’s not my fave.

  180. Danielle, NY says:

I am like a lot of you; none of the names seem to describe our mellow fellow very well. Perhaps his mother will be able to wake up the sleeping giant and he won’t be a mellow fellow any longer… I don’t like offspring named after their parents, I don’t like the sound of Yun Zih and on top of that even though the cloud refer to his loving mother, that cloud is big and black and white and if I was the cubby I wouldn’t want a big black and white cloud hanging over my head for the rest of my life. Not that he would understand the meaning of his name of course either in Chinese or English…
I know a lot of people around the world love our little cub, but he was born in San Diego, and since he is not allowed to keep his US citizenship and will have to go back to the land of his ancestors, Fu Sheng would be a nice reminder of his birth place. On top of that I know how to pronounce it and I think it sounds very nice. I agree with others on this blog, he won’t be little when all grown up and he doesn’t show signs of being anywhere close to be a dragon. The two other names are too general and not peculiar to him.
I keep wondering why there is not a name having a meaning close to mellow fellow or sleeping giant…

  181. Hazel says:

    Maureen #152 -
I agree with all your comments. Previously when we have been able to participate in the naming of Bai’s cubs with names ultimately agreed by China, the cub received their official name however each ‘blogger’ has their own special name they can use if they wish.
I thought carefully about the first three names listed – when our large cub grows into a full grown male, some people could confuse the name Fu Sheng with our wonder boy Mei Sheng who is his brother.
Schonbrunn Zoo Vienna already has a male panda cub aged 2yrs named Fu Long (Happy Dragon) therefore ‘little dragon’ would not seem appropiate.
All Bai’s cubs are ‘extraordinary bears’ and are ‘eternally blessed’ – my choice will be to honour Bai Yun for her expertise in rearing five amazing cubs, I have watched her on Panda cam since the birth of Hua Mei in 1999
Yun Zi may not make the cut however this is the reason for my choice of name for our Superman cub – the best is yet to come……

  182. Telly26 says:

What happened to the panda comparison chart? I am looking for it.
    Help?

  183. Sue Hegedus says:

I am enjoying watching this little panda so much here in Massachusetts. A few minutes ago he was lying on his back and looked like he was crying. Anyway, he finally got himself back on his stomach and now seems happy as a clam. I voted for the name about the blessing because I wish him nothing but blessings in this life. It is so fun now to watch Bai Yun and little bear interact. She is such a good mother.

  184. Jenny says:

I love the name of Xiao long, dragon is a totem in china.

  185. Margaret says:

I admit I am confused. If Mei Sheng means ” Born in the USA or beautiful life,” how does “Fu Sheng” become “Blissful San Diego?” I like the name but the meaning doesn’t hit me right.

According to the site I looked at, one of the meanings of Fu is “good fortune / happiness / luck …surname Fu. I like that meaning for this cub. Sheng meaning is “flourishing / vigorous / magnificent / extensively / surname Sheng … also brightness of sun / splendor.” So good fortune, happiness, luck flourishing, vigorous, magnificent, splendor, all of which are great ways to describe this cub while he is young and as he goes in to “brightness of sun.”

I voted for Yun Zi in honor of both Bai Yun, and the Cloud that he is and will continue to be. If I could vote again, I would vote for Fu Sheng.

  186. TAMI MICHAUD says:

Wow…I was lucky to be able to read each comment…I can feel the frustration from those of you who aren’t happy with the choices of names…

Every name that has been given to our pandas have been perfect and right for that panda. He, too will be named with a perfect name for him…!!!

I guess Su Lin and Zhen Zhen were disappointed there was no stuffed panda to buy for baby brother…

  187. Melissa says:

Excerpts of the latest exam video were shown on the local news this morning, along with an explanation that the cub is soon getting his name. They showed the web address so that people will know to vote. I have to say that your smallest black-and-white family member looks even more spectacular on a larger screen. (My 15″ monitor doesn’t do him justice!) Be still my heart!

Hats off to the Panda Team, as at times like these, you prove your skin is as thick as a panda’s woolly coat!

  188. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#158 – Dianne in Texas – the grumbling was worse when Zhen Zhen was named – many of us wanted the name Bright Star to at least be in the running & the explanation why that name was not chosen for the final 5 names did not make any of us happy. That was the first year Bai took her cub out of the den at night to “star gaze” :) Many, many of thought “Bright Star” was a perfect name but no such luck :( :(
#170 – I think we all know that Zhen Zhen is supposed to be pronounced “jung jung” but a blogger nicknamed her Miss Zoom because of her antics so Miss ZZ has stuck as a nickname.
I went back & checked on the voting for Tai Shan – over 200,000 votes were cast – BUT the NZ allowed you to vote as many times as you wanted – so I know I probably voted for Tai Shan more than a hundred times – it seemed to fit him perfectly. So now it’s only fair – one vote per computer & I have secretly voted :) But have also asked my relatives & friends to also vote :)

  189. Lucilla says:

185 (Margaret) – In Chinese, fu does mean prosperous and wealth etc. Sheng is the homonym for San and I think that is how the name arose. This is based on my little knowledge of the Chinese language. :)

  190. xiaohan@PA says:

“Dianne in Texas says: P Wong or xiaohan@PA, could you please explain, once again, to the grumblers WHY Gao Yun is not acceptable as a name for a male?”

Dianne, for me, Gao Yun is a very good name for both female and males, though, more oftenly used for female.

I can think right now many famous Chinese male named in Yun ( Chen Yun – A past Chinese leader, Ma Yun – a successful business man, Lou Yun – a world gymnastic champion). So I don’t know why it is not chosen for top 5. Be honest, I did not submit any other names because I really counted on this Gao Yun and I knew it must have been submitted by many friends and many times.

I am not grumbling and I am still very happy and excited to vote another name for this little guy, whatever name, he will be blessed and be happy. I voted for Fu Sheng. I’s say Chinese language is very complicated.
Sheng in Mei Sheng is “生“— being born or life
Sheng in Fu Sheng “圣“ – the Chinese translation of San ( San Diego), also other great meanings.

  191. Ying says:

    #185 Margaret,

The “Sheng” in “Mei Sheng” is written differently in Chinese than the “Sheng” in “Fu Sheng” although they pronounce the same. I voted for “Fu Sheng” since it sounds the best in Chinese tones. However, my concern is if the cub is named “Fu Sheng,” people may get confused about the relationship between him and Fu Long in Vienna. I don’t think the two of them are biologically related, but the two names make it sound like they are brothers or at least cousins.

  192. Anna says:

I voted for Fu Sheng because when cubbie is in China procreating, I want to know that a little of San Diego’s love and care for the giant panda is there with him.

  193. Shayna says:

#175 Lilarose, Hi, God Bless you. I love the Chineese people. As a matter of fact, my best friend growing up had grandparents from China. I would like to visit China, and perhaps even visit the pandas. Ma’am you are very welcome to tolerate whatever you choose to tolerate. I love people no matter what their culture is. It is about people. Culture is different in every country. The Chineese people are so beautiful and kind, very gracious people in my experience. That is why I like the name Friendship. USA and China have a special relationship, I think. I try to tell the truth, you can accept truth or not. Dragons don’t bring rain, the Lord brings rain, it is not a cultural thing. Additionally, there are lots of Christian people in China. Oh, yes there are.

  194. Shayna says:

#173 I did not mean to cause a stir. I was just trying to give a little information. If people want to believe wisdom and rain and whatever else come from a dragon then, God bless you, go right on ahead and believe that.

  195. Kris says:

I agree with Maureen (#152) that no matter what names were chosen, there would be those that are unhappy with the choices. As for me personally, I didn’t care for any of the name choices for ZZ but was very happy when I saw the list for cubby#5. I like them all and am having a hard time choosing. A matter of perspective or differences in opinion, I guess. I think we are fortunate enough to have any say in the matter and I will happily cast my vote – once I decide!! :)

  196. Jan Cecchi from Adelaide, Australia says:

Hi Mary #163 – thanks for the best wishes – I have already gone on line and booked my session to see Wang Wang and Funi – they go on display on December 14 ….. just can’t wait. I know it will be fabulous.
meanwhile I have the beautiful Bai and Chubby Cubby to watch all day ….every day. ho hum back to panda cam

  197. Linda says:

Alas, it’s 2am EST and I am awake, along with the Baby who is blissfully nursing, totally unaware that people all over the world are fretting over his name. As I watch Baby and Bai, I imagine this conversation:

    Baby: Mama?

    Bai: Yes Dear?

    Baby: What’s a name?

Bai: A name is something people use, Dear.

    Baby: What does it do?

Bai: It doesn’t do anything. Names just are.

Baby: Then why do people use them?

Bai: Because it helps them remember who you are. You see, Dearest, humans are very forgetful creatures. Not like we Pandas. I, for one, will never forget who you are, and I don’t even need a name to do so.

Baby: But that’s because you love me, Mama.

Bai: The people love you, too, Little One.

Baby: Then why would they forget me?

Bai: Because a long time ago, the people had their memories erased by language.

    Baby: What’s language, Mama?

Bai: It’s something that makes people name things so they think they understand them, and then they forget their true essence.

Baby: What’s a true essence, Mama?

Bai: Your true essence is the way you feel when you wiggle against my belly, the rise and fall of your tummy when you’re napping, the way you smell when I give you a bath, and the soft sounds you make when you’re contently playing.

    Baby: Mama?

    Bai: Yes Dear?

    Baby: I’m glad I’m not a human.

  198. Melissa says:

Lilarose #175, as others have mentioned, you are not alone! I also think it is very important to name the cub in the context of HIS culture.

I mentioned in one of my previous comments that Chinese dragons are associated with potent and auspicious powers and I immediately thought of Gao Gao’s “special” powers. Gao Gao — big dragon, cub — little dragon. One thing we love about Gao Gao is the contradiction between his small but mighty size and his name, whether interpreted as “big, big” or “tall, tall.” Names don’t always make literal sense. Ya Ya’s name means “beautiful little girl.” The Chinese obviously don’t have a problem with a grown panda having “little” in its name.

A name that doesn’t sound pleasing to our ears that hear English being spoken every day may sound wonderful in China, the land of the panda, the land of the little cub.

When I was looking for pictures of Zhen Zhen and Su Lin to find out when their noses were finally black rather than pink/pinkish, I ran across “discussions” about Zhen Zhen’s name. Yes, there was a lot of hue and cry then, too. SDZ and the Chinese are very gracious to allow the public to voice their opinions and cast votes to name the cub. How many of us would entrust complete strangers from another country to name our children? I am amazed and grateful that we have the opportunity to vote.

    Good Morning Dear Panda Family

    Dear Dianne in Texas #55,
First I wish to thank you for your caring and kind words. They meant more to me than you know friend, so I thank you from my heart for your kindness.

    Erik from IA #24,
My sincerest sympathies on the lose of your grandmother. Although I know our baby panda cannot replace her, I am happy he eased your pain.

I’m afraid I have not been able to participate very much lately. My health issues have been kicking the stuffing out of me and on top of that, I lost my dog of more than 12 years. I’m sure I don’t have to say any more for all the tender-hearted people out there to understand my pain.

I apologize if I’m wrong for saying it, but I think the SDZ staff and the Chinese, and whoever else is involved had a very difficult task on their hands in coming up with five names from which we could choose. I know I wouldn’t want that responsibility. And it seems like many of us have forgotten our manners a little bit and are complaining rather than thanking them for their efforts. I can’t remember the saying right now, but it’s something about not being able to please all of the people all of the time. Let’s face it, we could call our baby #5 ANYTHING and he will grow into a magnificent panda “man” who is meant to do great things. I believe this with my whole heart, just look into his eyes!! I think it was Susan from the UK #174 who said if you couldn’t find a name out of the five that you liked, don’t vote. I know that may have sounded harsh, but I don’t think she meant it to. This is the first experience I’ve had with watching a panda cub grow, and I am TOTALLY awestruck. PLEASE lets not ruin it with harsh, disgruntled words. Please let’s continue to enjoy EVERY minute we have with this little bundle of fluffy love and his incredible mom.

    Dear Moderator,
I am so sorry, but like I’ve said, I’ve been out of the loop. I think the shower is November 5th, but I don’t know the time (I live in NJ), or how to see the presents the pandas want. Please help me.

Moderator’s note: Welcome back, Phyllis! The cub’s virtual shower is Thursday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. our time (2 p.m. New Jersey time). Here’s the Panda Shower Wish List…

It’s monday, ugh. I am retired with nothing really to do and I still don’t like mondays. Ok we have all voted by now, I think. I’m happy with “son of cloud” I listened to the sounds of the name and I think it’s nice. Bai deserves having a son with such a great name. I am not trying to insult any one I’m just saying…..

I’m starting to wonder why you guys keep seeing that baby move, not me!. I check in often but still haven’t seen it. Am I wrong to be concerened? I realize he is only 3 months old but a very sleepy bear. I wonder which bed he would use at Goldilocks house.

    mem

  204. Shari says:

#185 Margaret – Don’t forget that Mei Sheng is pronounced “May Shun” so I feel pretty certain that the Chinese character isn’t the same.

  205. Vicky says:

I can’t wait for his next exam and the shower! I need to go shopping for the little guy! I love the way
Bai and he stare in each others eyes while she rolls him around and he smacks her with his paws. Cute as can be.

  206. barbara says:

well I bought my shower gift this morning and voted for Yun Zi. I won’t be able to watch, my company blocked facebook. I’ m lucky to be able to see the cams. I’m getting ready for my trip next week to SDZ and more excited everyday. hope to see alot of the people who take such great care of our pandas and ask alot of questions.

  207. Nancy in TN says:

I wish I could watch the panda cam baby shower. I had a hard time choosing a name for him. He is just to adorable. :) :) :) . I have asked all my friends to vote. I hope that the name I picked wins, because I belive it suits him well. Hopes everyone else has fun during the baby shower. My wishes go to the Panda Family. :) :) :) :) !!!!!

  208. Cindy in East Lansing says:

Maureen – #188: Remember when Zhen Zhen learned how to climb a tree lickety-split? “Zoom-Zoom” seemed to certainly fit.
I understand the displeasure with Gao Yun not being selected as a possible name, but doesn’t our special little guy deserve a male name?

We voted at home on both our computers this weekend, and I voted today on my work computer (during my break, of course). Fellow pandaholics here at work are placing their ballots, too. :)

  209. Carolyn says:

No one name jumped at me like Tai Shan and Su Lin’s names did but I will choose one and if it’s not the one the majority has voted for, I’m ok with that as I rarely use their given name, this little boy will always be my Chubikins and will most likely get another nickname as he grows older. I have a feeling he is going to be another great somersaulter.

  210. Danielle, NY says:

    VIDEO ALERT!!
I found a video “Bai Yun Twirling Her Cub, Oct. 31, 2009” posted by IffyBear of the nightly affair starting at 3:14 AM that #86 Heather and # 102 Tiny had reported. I am so glad that someone recorded it and was kind enough to share it with others.

  211. Lisa in Colorado says:

I thought choosing a name was hard. Choosing a panda shower gift is even harder. I think I’ll just have to help a little bit with the polar cam too. I would love to be able to see how those bears are similar and different to the Panda. So wonderful to have this technology and a zoo willing to support these web cams. Now back to deciding on a panda gift…

  212. Laura says:

    197. Linda – that is very beautiful. Thank you!

  213. Lisa in San Diego says:

Thank you, #153 SAN DI for the link to the pronunciations. It was very interesting to hear. It is also interesting that there does not yet appear to be consensus yet on this blog as to the name. I too was torn. Yesterday at home I voted (on behalf of my kids) for Fú Shèng because we like the sound, we like recognizing San Diego, and we like the reference to Mei Sheng (Margaret, I had the same question as you regarding how they got from Beautiful Life to Blissful San Diego–but I don’t know Chinese. I wondered if Mei Sheng has become such a star that his name MEANS San Diego?) Finally, my son is Sean so it is fun for him to have bear(s) with names that sound like his.

However, today at another computer I voted (on my own behalf) for Xióng Wěi. It also has a nice sound when pronounced, it is a lovely meaning and it would be all his own. (I don’t mind the Pooh reference at all!) I agree with SAN DI that Yún Zǐ is a very nice thought, but did not like the sound. All this said, any of the names will be great for our little man. Thanks to everyone for all of the effort to select these names and for allowing all of us to participate.

BTW, the google alerts today had a blog citing an article from Ben Charlton of ZA regarding his research findings about the vocalizations of pandas during breeding. Apparently, the male bleats transmit information about their size while females transmit information about their age–just fascinating!

  214. Shayna says:

I appreciate you not wanting a controversy. By the Grace of God, Big Boy panda will get a loving name.

  215. Lilarose in Oregon says:

I have read all the comments with interest, and one thing for sure, by November 17 we will know our little guy’s name, and after that we will hear it often!

I too appreciate the opportunity to once again help choose a cub’s name, although the one finally chosen has never been my vote!

About those Giant Panda eyes, there is just something about them that makes the Giant Panda seem so intelligent, so other-worldly, so unique, so wild! I just want to know what they are thinking and how they have lived to get where they are today (and have adapted to humankind)–so little do we know! But most of all, I am hoping this animal will survive so our descendants can love it as much as we do.

#193 Shayna, thanks for your post where you mentioned me. I wish we could have another conversation in about twenty years! (we will have to watch the PandaCams that long, too!)

  216. Frances in NYC says:

Ying #191–I think Fu Long and our cubs are cousins (their mothers are related, I think). Fu Long and Zhen Zhen were born within a few weeks of each other and some of us liked to imagine that they would breed together, but found they couldn’t because they were cousins.

  217. Tiny says:

#201 Phyllis – Welcome back lady, good to see you again. I was starting to get worried, haven’t heard from you in quite a few days. Sorry to hear about your loss… Maybe watching precious Cubbie can help mend your spirit a bit :)

#197 Linda – Hahaha! Loved your story :)

And thank you SDZ staff for including all of us in this naming ceremony. I can see what a huge undertaking it was and how much thought went into it. This has really been fun :) Mucho Gracias! Hehehehe!

Hmmm, I am wondering which name Momma Bai would pick for her Cubbie? I noticed that in Cubbie’s pic on his voting page that he has a very sly smile about his eyes, like a wise Dragon. Maybe that is our hint as to the Staffs pick?

  218. Mary from Brooklyn says:

Linda #197 — your conversation brought tears to my eyes. It was so precious.

Also condolences to Erik on the loss of your grandmother. You are so lucky to have had one. Pandas are a welcome comfort at any time, but especially in times of stress.

Phyllis, so sorry to hear of your health problems. Hope you get better soon. Also sorry that you lost your dog. That’s never an easy time.

Since I’m still in a quandry, I’m going to visit my neighbor from Sichuan and ask her advice. She only gets to see the pandas when I bring my laptop over to see her. I also want to hear the names in the Sichuan dialect of Mandarin.l

Looking forward to the shower ….. I promised Hua Mei and Mei Sheng I’d write to them about it, since they will be sound asleep during the event.

  219. Bobbie Wood says:

Linda #197: Absolutely beautiful writing!!! Thank You!!
Maureen #157: You are also ‘right on’!

  220. Liana says:

I just checked the voting page, and over 10,000 people have voted for the wee one’s name! Oh my goodness, that’s a lot of people out there who are interested in our little cub, in pandas in general, and have the panda’s interest at heart. Makes me feel all tingly all over that this little cub has generated world-wide interest and appreciation for the pandas. What to go, Mr. Chubbs!

  221. KIm says:

Some of you are way to into this…

  222. Susan (UK) says:

Phyllis #201; No, I didn’t mean to sound harsh – I hope it didn’t come over that way as I’m actually a very quiet person. However, it got to the point where nearly every entry was criticising the choice of our own Panda Team and the Chinese and I think something somewhere snapped! I apologise if anyone was offended by my ‘don’t vote if you don’t like the names’ but I stand by my decision to post it. This little bundle of fluff has no idea of the furore he is causing.

I do hope you are feeling better and I am so sorry about your little dog. If you look up into the night sky, one of the stars will be him/her. I have many cats who are stars and it can be very comforting to look up and think of them as the pets you have lost.

  223. Frances in NYC says:

Danielle #210–thanks for pointing out that video. A little late night (or early morning) twirling, a little cleaning, a little exercise for the back legs, a little play fighting.

The play this time is so different from when she played with Zhen Zhen, that I saw anyway. I think it must be a boy cub/girl cub difference–when Bai twirled Miss ZZ, she (ZZ) seemed to be delighted, whereas #5 seems to want to fight back. Maybe I’m projecting or misremembering, but I am amazed to see how Bai tailors her teaching to each of her cubs.

Ooh–they’re playing again. I’ll never get out of the house this way…

  224. deb says:

I never cared for any of the names chosen for Bai’s other cubs. However, after a couple of months I could not imagine calling them anything but their chosen name. Each panda grew into their name beautifully. After watching Born Wild: The First Days of Life last night on PBS I realized all that matters is that they are healthy. Even if he were named “Hey You” he would still be precious.

  225. rita says:

The little one is making progress in his locomotion skills. Just saw him move short distances in the den.

  226. Suzanne (the other one) says:

P Wong – thank you SO much for the link to the way the names sound! That makes a huge difference… but I’m still not sure which I’ll end up choosing!

And, I keep getting distracted by Bai and El Cinco de Bai-o playing. I think she’s either giving him the cleaning of his life (to get him all spiffed up for the upcoming shower), or playing with him so much that she’s going to tucker him out and he’ll sleep peacefully thru the whole thing! LOL – LONG PLAY session!

  227. Cindy in East Lansing says:

I laughed out loud when I read that someone thought Yun Zi would sound like “Fonzie” from Happy Days. I got a great mental picture of our little guy giving a thumb-up and a wink while he said, “Hey-y!”

Now, watching exam videos or looking at the photo gallery may never be the same.

  228. Pandafan#2 says:

I wonder if I’ll go for “Son of Cloud” or “Eternal Blessing.” My friend and I were laughing because we made up a name that meant “Little Big Big” I got to decorate a ceramic panda for Halloween. (It was a muddy panda, because they had no black! Shame on them! ;) ) Give a hug to the chub cub for me!!!

  229. Pandafan#2 says:

Lol, Moderator! You won’t be up at 12:01 AM PST? Even during time change? (Okay, I admit it, I wouldn’t be too.) :) I really hope that the panda cub will be able to have his Debut for Christmas!

    Cubbie’s wish list:

    1. A name (like Ka Pow!)

    2. A computer for my keyboard.

    3. More Gao juice.

  230. Banya says:

It is interesting to see the name “Yun Zi” as one of the selected names for Bai Yun’s baby cub. The Chinese character “Zi” is tranditionally used for a girl’s name in Japan and Korea. As some of you may have noticed, many Japanese lady’s names are ended with “Ko”, such as Yoko, Michiko, Keiko Eiko, etc. using the same character, “Zi” (”Ja” in Korean). I don’t think anyone in Korea and Japan uses “Zi” for a baby boy’s name.

I’ve heard that in the olden days, some Asian ethnic groups preferred to have boys over girls and named a girl using “Zi” hoping to have a baby boy next time. But then, the underlying idea may have disappeared over the years and nowadays it may not have much meaning to that except having pretty names.

I just wanted to point out the cultural differences in naming a baby.

  231. PandaCamer says:

My vote is for Yun Zi. I like all the implications of that name- a way to honor Bai Yun and the idea that the literal son of a cloud would be rain or snow, the water that runs through all life on the planet. That seems to honor this ancient species and reminds us that water is something that interconnects us all.

    Thanks

    Tiny,
Thanks for the welcome back, it’s nice to know I was missed. The feeling was mutual.

  233. Lilarose in Oregon says:

There are cultural differences in naming babies right here in the United States since we are a great melting pot.

    Some names stretch the imagination!

I have always believed that parents should not be allowed to name their baby until the child is at least twenty-four hours old and the mother, in particular, is reasonably rested and recovering.

But then, one hippy couple I knew in the 1960’s named their son an amazing name…how they got it is when the father was smoking something besides cigarettes, they decided that whatever sounds (gibberish?) came out of his mouth at a certain instant would be the son’s name. And that is what they did! The boy is an adult now, of course, and I did a Google search on his name and he is definitely among us! And using his full name!

With most names there is bound to be at least one other being on earth with the same name. In this guy’s case, I really doubt it, so I won’t repeat what they named him!

Another little tow-headed girl was named “Rising Moon,” and she went by “Moon.” The last name was a sound that a wolf makes to the moon! How about that! Imaginative, eh?

In my case, my two girls came to me through adoption (sisters) and they were two and three. They already had names, and that age I hesitated to change their identity so drastically. Actually, I liked their names (Barbie and Nancy) and since N. had two separate middle names, and since I was a business woman famiiar with forms, I decided to drop one of the middle names so she wouldn’t have to explain why she had two names in the “middle name” boxes!

Then there was the new baby boy my friends named “R.J.” Not Robert James, not Roger John, but just R.J. That had to be a teacher’s nightmare! Then there are those forms!

  234. kat w says:

Mom’s being a little ornery today, she just came in to the nursery and pushed baby about a foot from where he was
resting! harumph! Sat for a moment, then left. Why? Is she anxious for him to scoot outside to play when he just wants to rest? Poor little guy, she was kinda rough with him earlier too, when he wanted to look out the door, pushing him around and away from the door.
    I wonder what’s on her mind……..?

  237. P Wong says:

#230, Banya — Clarification of “Zi” in Chinese culture:

As far back as 500 B.C., Confucius was referred to as Kong Zi or Kong Fu Zi (hence the Latinized version came to be “Confucius”). “Zi” was an honorific title given to respected men. Other examples are Lao Zi (Lao Tzu) and Meng Zi (Mencius or Meng Tzu). I’m not sure how that same character became feminized in other Asian cultures. From the Chinese point of view, Zi is a good name for male children and depending on how it is combined, a good name for females, too.

    #151 Lisa
We will post video of the naming ceremony on our Web site.

  239. Shirley says:

I know that safety is the most important thing for both the keepers and pandas, yet I wonder if it’s ever possible (desirable???) for the keepers to occasionally pet the adult bears???

    Moderator’s note: No.

  240. Danielle, NY says:

    # 232 Phyllis, the video is on YouTube.

  241. Simply Sandy says:

To the cam person at this time: Thank you very much for showing us Momma Bai, ZZ and Su Lin:-). It has been awhile since I see the two sisters….Thank you, once again.

  242. Pam T. says:

#153 SAN DI Thank you for the website so that we can hear the Chinese sound for each of the names. I got some great postcard pictures of chubby cubbie laying on his back in one you can really see the black spot on the tip of his tail. The Chinese had to agree on the names that were chosen so I guess they thought all the names suited him in one way or another.

  243. Cheryl says:

Well… all I know is that Yun Zi hit me immediately with a little ping in the heart and puddles in my eyes — so that’s the name I voted for. But, regardless of his name — he will be just as adorable, treasured and loved as he is today. Looking forward to the shower and then the naming ceremony. What a fun way to officially start the holiday season!

  244. Phyllis says:

Dear Susan in the UK #222,

No friend, you did NOT sound harsh to me at all. I understood your frustration perfectly. I apologize if I didn’t express myself clearly, I was attempting to support you by saying that I did NOT think you meant what you said harshly, that you were just offering a logical solution to something that seemed to be getting out of hand. Also, thank you for your kind words about my dog. After more than 12 years of his unconditional love and loyalty, it is a very hard struggle for me, but I am trying to remember that they were very happy, full years and I will see him again. I have a lovely poem about a “rainbow bridge” which I will gladly send you if you like.

How very exciting all this is. I am still so far behind on posts, but this one caught my eye immediately. Well, right after I got the email about the wish list. I ordered a part of the polar cam – hope to add more as I can. A polar cam for Chinook’s cub/cubs. We are all hoping!!! And I ordered a Panda baby hanging toy. Only 4 were needed. Oh how cool, when I see him playing I can know that I purchased him a toy. The wish list is the best thing going to show how much we love the pandas and what a great way to offer them presents that we can’t bring with us! Omigosh, I’ve been gone so long, I must be off to vote on his name!!!

  246. Danielle, NY says:

Don’t miss the three new videos on the website “Pandas Live On”. The first video is about curious Lin Ping, from Thailand, she is quite something, she reminds me of Miss ZZ!!! The two other videos are of Fu Long in Vienna, Austria and the closeness he is enjoying with his mother Yang Yang. But his world is about to change drastically as he is due back to China soon. On the website pandanews(dot)wordpress(dot)com, there is a picture of the cargo box which is in their enclosure for Fu Long to get use to it. There is also a video of his parents eating close to the cargo box. Fu Long just turned 2 years old at the end of August and still lives with his mom.

  247. Pandafan#2 says:

I just voted for Yun Zi. Hope that it is that one or “eternally blessed!” I don’t really like little Dragon (No offense to whoever suggested it! ;) ) because he is not little, and he is definitely not a dragon. Have fun with our little big Napping Bear!

  248. Lil says:

Thank you, #202 P Wong and Moderator for providing the link to the names in Mandarin. That was very helpful! While it would be nice to honor Bai Yun by naming the little one Yun Zi, I think it would be very difficult for English speakers to pronounce his name properly. I think we owe it to the little guy to give him a name that won’t be constantly mispronounced, and that has helped me to make my decision. Thanks again!

  249. kat w says:

loving little cloud, but missing little zhennie….. = – (

  250. Laura says:

    I voted for Extraordinary Bear!!

Extraordinary means: remarkable, exceptional, and unusually great. That’s our baby, alright!

  251. Danielle, NY says:

#191 Ying and # 216 Frances in NYC. You are right Frances, Fu Long and our mellow fellow are related. Fu Long’s mother is Yang Yang, Yang Yang’s father is Da Di. Pan Pan is the father of Da Di and Bai Yun. So, since they are related I can go ahead and vote for Fu Sheng, which is the name that is kind of growing on me…

  252. Claudia says:

I have not been traveling the States for a while, but when I was little, there was a motel chain, Travel Lodge, with a Panda and a sleeping cap on. My mom and my two bros and me, called it Sleepy Bear Motel. This suits this guy, are all baby cubs sleepy at first like this??? I can hardly wait til they play more.

  253. Frances in NYC says:

Danielle #251–thanks for the confirmation–you are so up on panda relations!

I might have gone with Fu Sheng had I realized the odd pronunciation of Yun Zi. If that is his chosen name, I feel we Americans will pronounce it “yoon zee” and the Chinese will pronounce it as they will. Having made it through the vetting process, the name must not be so unpronounceable to native speakers? Perhaps it sounds different in Sichuan?

Shirley #239 and Moderator–I would think that keepers might offer the occasional back scratch to an adult bear if separated by bars or caging?

Moderator’s note: You can ask that question of our keepers during the shower.

  254. Susan (UK) says:

Phyllis, what a lovely lady you are! Thanks for your reply. I have noticed that the posts have gone back to their normal happy selves again, so that’s a good thing. Your offer of The Rainbow Bridge is really sweet, but as I have had to go through losing 7 cats over the years (and have 4 at the moment – I am known as the cat lady in my neighbourhood!) I have always got a copy of Rainbow Bridge at hand; it is, as you say, a comfort. It never ceases to amaze me how much we love our animals. I have 7 memorial boxes with my much missed pets’ ashes in and, although some people don’t like them, they also bring me comfort as my pet is still with me. It’s easy to see how the Pandas have caught our attention – not forgetting the polar bears as well of course!

Last night (sorry, your afternoon) I was watching and taking photographs of Bai and Little One having a play session and my laptop packed up. I’m trying to type this on one of those ridiculously small notebook thingies and I’m lost without my favourites list of addresses!

  255. Carole A says:

    To Moderator and Panda Team,
I would like to express my appreciation for what you do for the pandas and the information you provide to us Panda fans. I finish my shower purchase this morning and bought a gift for Gao Gao. I would like to remind everyone that you can still purchase a gift for Gao Gao. Let’s no forget him. I want also to say thank you to the San diego zoo to give us the opportunity to vote for a panda name. Bai Yun’s bundle of joy is truly a special bear whatever name is chosen.
    I live in Ontario, Canada.

  256. pandanuts says:

i vote Yun Zi. but i still not undetstand why not Gao Yun. Gao Yun is the best name for the cub. it is realy so pity that he is not going to be called Gao Yun. The top list dissapinted me. none of the name suit the cub well. and some of it even no meaning at all, such as Xiao Long…alas..

  257. Kammy from HK says:

Phyllis (#244), I, too, am sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well and you have lost your dog. I will keep you in my prayers and hope you feel better now.

I’m going to vote and thanks for giving me the opportunity to participate in the naming process.

  258. IHN from Asia says:

    Hello all,

I want to give more information of the name in the voting list – Xiao Long ( 小龙 )

Xiao Long ( 小龙 ) is also the chinese name of the late Kung Fu movie star Bruce Lee

  259. zheng says:

as an ethnic Chinese, I voted for Yong Xiang. It is a very nice and auspicious name for a Chinese boy.
    Some clarifications
    1. Sheng in Fu Sheng and Mei Sheng are totally different characters. There might be several dozens Chinese characters that pronounced the same as Sheng in pin ying. One has to be able to read Chinese to tell the difference
Sheng in Fu Sheng would be more accurately said Holy or Sacred. It happened to be the Chinese translation for the first part of city name of San Diego. However it would be a bit far-fetched to say Sheng means San Diego.

    2. I voted for Yong Xiang as Xiang means blessed, peace, auspicious, kind and above all, a very popular Chinese boys’ name.

    3. We don’t have Jr. or III in Chinese names. Yun Zi sounds a bit strange to native Chinese ears. Of course it honors mama Bai Yun, besides baby was born in America. Maybe it is a good choice.

  260. barbara says:

Frances #253. Angie is the person to ask at the shower about back scratches, she spent time with Mei Sheng and when he went to China and she visited him, he presented is back for a good scratch. Yes he did remember her and what she reperesented.
Phyllis, hope you feel better and sorry for the loss of your dear dog, my was 15 when he passed.

  261. Jeri says:

I just went to the wish list site, and the only items left are Flowers for the Pandas. There were 6 available, and I bought one. I called, and they are going to put a few items on the list on Thursday, but they won’t last. The lady suggested adoption, but I’m waiting until after the Naming Ceremony to do that.

  262. Joan says:

Frances #253, the baby is in my head and heart as “Yoon Zee”, but, I can adapt to the change if this is not to be.

The baby pandas do have a way of growing into their chosen names!

  263. May Ann of Phillipines says:

  264. Elizabeth says:

Go, lil cubbie, go! Whew, cubbie is giving himself a workout at this moment (12:52 EST)!! He is just scootin and lifting his little head, so, so cute.

Moderator, I have been away for a couple days and just opened up the ’shower’ list to purchase an enrichment item and all the items are gone. Have the items been removed until the day of the shower or have all the baby shower items been purchased? Thanks!!

Moderator’s note: Wonderful news: almost all of the panda baby shower items have been purchased (there are still flowers for the exhibit available)! Our panda fans are so generous. Thank you!

  265. Melissa says:

#261 Jeri…I’m glad you shared the information that a few items will be on the list Thursday. I don’t normally do internet transactions with my bank cards so I bought a Visa gift card this morning to complete my wish list purchases. When I then went to the wish list to buy something, everything was gone except flowers. I didn’t think all the items would be gone so fast because all of the choices were there yesterday around noon. :( I will have to be on the ball Thursday!

I LOVE this idea, but at the same time I hate it~! I am stuck at school until 12:20 California time and can’t watch the shower. But, luckily I can go to San Diego zoo and visit the gorgeous pandas any time. I cannot wait until the baby is out, Yet, I don’t know when that will be. How old does a panda have to be before they can be in the open enclosure for visitors at the zoo to see?
