To Name a Panda
Posted at 4:47 pm October 22, 2009 by Suzanne HallThe Panda Team met this morning to mull over the choice names for our new panda cub. After narrowing the submitted names each day to 5, the short list before us today held about 50 selections for us to consider. We sought the assistance of a staff member who is a native Chinese speaker, in order to ensure we knew the correct pronunciation and meaning of the names.
Once she reviewed the list and helped us eliminate a few (“this one has very feminine connotations” or “this one is awkward in the Chinese tongue”), each Panda Team member was able to eliminate one name outright, for any reason. This left us with about 30 names to work with.
Next, we voted on our top five names. One by one, we went around the room and staff from husbandry, nutrition, education, marketing, and research listed their favorites. From this, there were four clear winners, which went straight to the short list, and a tie for fifth place among several names. We voted again, adding one more name to the short list. Two close runners-up will be used as alternates, should the Chinese reject any of the names on our list of five.
We are now waiting for the Chinese to approve our list. As soon as they do, the short list will be posted for you to vote on. We will have the translation of the names and hope to have an audio clip so you can hear how the names sound when spoken. Things will happen rather quickly now, as we will be naming our little bear at a naming ceremony on Tuesday, November 17.
I cannot tell you what names are on the list, but I can tell you that there was one name that garnered more votes than any other this morning; a clear favorite among the staff. It is up to you to try to guess which name that was when we post the list… and to vote for your own favorite!

October 22nd, 2009 at 5:05 pm
I have no idea why I got teary reading this .. guess I’m a little sad that our baby is growing up so fast — and really happy that he will have a name — and that’s always a good thing. Either that or I’m just a big old crybaby! Looking forward to see and hearing my choices and voting! He just melts my heart.
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Oh I cant wait for the little fella to have a name , I just hope that it is fitting for the adorable creature that he is. This is my first panda watch and I am totally addicted. I read all the blogs and am very grateful for all the valuable knowledge I am getting from all you seasoned Panda watches. The videos are great but the Panda Cam just blows my mind…I can’t leave it alone. Its half way through the night here in England but still plenty to see.
I did vistit the Zoo especially to see Zennie and hope to return next year to see her brother.
Love to the proud parents and thanks to all at the Zoo for making it possible for me to witness such a wonderful event. xx

I can just imagine how many names you all had to sift through to come up with the magic 5 and I”m intrigued now by the special name that has captivated you all. I look forward to having the opportunity to vote on the new cub’s name. Thank you to everyone who worked through this huge endeavor and to all who submitted names for us to vote on.
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:23 pm
Woo hoo! I can hardly wait!!
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
thanks for the update!
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
This is so exciting! I can’t wait for him to have a name, a real name, instead of all our beloved nicknames. I wonder if he will be named on my birthday….November 27th or earlier? It is neat to hear the process that goes into naming a panda! It is like royalty!
I was just watching him. He woke from a nap, stretched, moved those limbs, a big yawn, a quick check by Bai, and rolled on his tummy for another nap. Imagine if he knew how much we treasure him and all the wonderful animals at SDZ and in our world!
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Finally the list is coming out. Thanks Suzanne for the update. Saw the little man in the den alone, stretching. Too adorable.
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I am really hoping the favorite name is Gao Yun!!!! What an honor to recognize this baby’s parents but to combine the names of these fantastic parents.
October 22nd, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Obviously, Dr Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce was that unanimous one!

It’s getting exciting now … to think our little Prince will soon have a name to give him real stature in the world. He still looks like a cuddly Cubbie to me … but I’m looking forward to hearing his name now.
May he grow strong and walk proud.

My suggestion for the darling baby is Li Shen, meaning powerful, deep thinker. Or it could be Shen Li.

It is getting really exciting again. Thanks, Suzanne for meticulously explaining the voting process to come up with the short list. I am sure it wasn’t easy and took a while to come to the final three you needed to get to add to the 4 easier ones. I am glad that there was one favorite amongst the team, and hope that is one of the fan favorites too. We will sit on pins and needles to figure it out and vote when we can. Little Big man is getting big very fast and needs a name for his 100 day ceremony.
October 22nd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
I can’t wait to see the list and vote! I am waiting for the name to name my own panda bear toy after him

I hope it’s napping bear because it seems like that’s all he does!
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Love the chance to participate as we women at work, the Accounts Payable Dept., watch the panda baby every day…more than once a day, even though streaming is forbidden at work. Some things are just worth it! Thank you for letting us look into the San Diego Zoo world. We love it here in Virginia Beach, VA.
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
The suspense! To watch this little cub grow and develop and call him our nicknames (Roly Poly, Sir Tubsalot, Chubbs, etc) has been amazing. To put an actual, permanent name to him is so exciting!
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Oh i am so happy!
Baby boy is going to be named!!
October 22nd, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Yippy Skippy- Baby 5 will have a name soon! I can’t wait to see the Name poll!
Woohoo!!
Hugs to you all and Panda Family
October 22nd, 2009 at 8:21 pm
OH My – does Bai know the name of her cubbie – she sure is tossing him around tonite – for all those worried about out little (opps big guy) sleeping so much – try to remember that he is a growing panda that takes a lot of energy – everytime Mom swoops in for a bath, or to clean him he uses a lot of energy fighting her – Mamma Bai wins
October 22nd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
YEA!!! The name selection process has started!! Like I said before, this reminds me of the IOC voting on the cities that are bidding for either the Winter or Summer Olympic Games, and their voting whittles down the cities to their top 4 or 5 for voting later on in the process. Same thing here with the names for the little panda baby! Don’t know how many names you all were getting over the last few days, but I bet there were close to about a thousand names that you all poured over today! Getting those names down to the top 5 was not an easy process, was it? Well, you all did it and added a couple of alternates as well. As far as the No. 1 name on the list that got most of the votes, I can’t even guess right now! Maybe it’s the Chinese name for Rolly Polly!?! I wonder…………………
LOL!!!

I’m looking forward to your definite list of the top 5 names for us to vote on! That will be fun! I’m just hoping one of my eight names that I put in made the top 5 or even the alternate list!
Just got on the cam and saw Bai and her cubbie laying down trying to get some sleep. I love the way that she hugs him and gives him alot of loving. Bai is a very loving panda mom!
Gonna get back to the cam again before going to bed! Bye!!!

C: …
B: Huh?
C: Zzzzzz…
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:02 pm
It seems impossible to me that any name could possibly represent all he is to us. We love him so much and he is so, so, so delicious. I am glad that you all had the same favorite. I hope You who know him best will get your wish. Hugs and kisses to my chubby cubby and all our wonderful animals.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Seeing the little guy melts my heart, too. I get so emotional and find so much joy in seeing him. Thank you SDZ for all your efforts and diligent work. The pandas have always been my favorite part of the zoo. Seeing cubbie #5 grow up before our eyes is extra-special.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
And the excitement builds. Like everyone else, I can’t imagine how you managed to narrow it down to 5 each day. Then getting the selections down to 30 would be even more difficult. But it is truly amazing that your vote for the final 5 had such consensus. It will be so interesting to see the choices.
As a lark, I tried to translate everyone’s favorite nickname, “roly poly”, into Chinese. No equivalent. Then I tried “rotund”, which is what the vet from the last exam called him, I believe. Again, no match found. So finally I just tried “fat boy”. Well I did get matches there, but I didn’t think the English version was too polite, so he will just be Roly Poly until he gets a name.
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:36 pm
I’m so excited to see the list and to be able to vote. I hope his name will be as handsome as he is. He is so cute he deserve a name that will describe his true cuteness and sweetness that he is. Well, back to the cam to say good night to him.
Love him soooooooooo much oxo
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Suzanne: My Hospitalized wife can’t wait to hear the names and to see if her choice of the 5 names picked wins as she has been on the money with Su Lin,Zhen Zhen, and even the Atlanta Babies plus Tai Shan in the National Zoo…I thank everyone there at SDZ for their kindness whenever we are able to visit when she ha Surgery in SoCal…..Even though it seems like she will now be permanently confined to a wheelchair due to her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease, she can’t wait for my daily updates on his royal chubby cubby and whatever name is chosen doesn’t matter as long as he has all of you at SDZ caring for him and his family….He is a joy to watch grow and I can’t wait to see him become the next tree frog when Bai Yun brings him out for the world to see…..Keep up the great work,as the whole world is really watching!
October 22nd, 2009 at 9:48 pm
one of my son’s nicknames is STUFFED FULL OF FLUFF. but i’m willing to share it with little chubbles. well good luck on your name big guy. at least we can’t name you something like BOSCOE CLEATUS FINGLEHEIMER. that’s my basset’s name anyway.
October 22nd, 2009 at 10:42 pm
I knew I should have submitted Butter Dude. That would have been the all time favorite for sure.
Thanks for keeping us updated. This is so exciting.

What is the schedule on the 17th for the naming ceremony? I want to be there and have to make plans as I am coming from the Bay area. Is there a ceremony, and will HE be brought out to see? Thanks, Janan
Moderator’s note: Make your travel arrangements to be at the Zoo on Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. The cub won’t be making an appearance; he’ll most likely be sleeping, of course!
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:01 am
This is so exciting. Being able to submit our choice/s of name has made it even more exciting and makes us all feel a big part of the Panda family. Thank you for letting us all join in and for your very hard work in choosing the shortlist.
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 am
I’m so looking forward to the naming of this big furry baby. I know everyone wishes the name they chose for this beautiful boy is the winner, myself included. The staff really went to great lengths to sort all the names. I have to say, SDZ does NOT half step anything. They always make things seem perfect. Good luck to whomever gets the bragging rights for naming Bai Yun’s baby!
Thank you SDZ for this wonderful opportunity!
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 am
Can’t wait – thanks to SDZ for including us all the way “down under”
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:10 am
Can’t wait for the list. I so hope Gao Yun made the cut.
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:31 am
I wonder if Momma Bai will send in her vote to as to which name she wants her precious chubster to have…but I guess he will always be her special No.5 like Chanel’s…
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:42 am
I bet the one is Gao Yun, my favorite
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:44 am
Thanks for explaining the name selection process. I look forward to voting on my favorite when the final list is published, and to learn what the staff favorite is. You do such a great job of keeping us all “in the loop” regarding our beloved pandas!
Just checked the Panda Cam and noted once more the way Bai Yun seems to sometimes be lying on top of the baby. She just changed position and nearly buried him under her head! Sometimes it seems like she’s in a position similar to that taken by some human babies when they sleep: face down with butt high in the air! He just wriggles out from under, so I know he’s OK!
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:57 am
I bet the one is Gao Yun, Am I right?? Dear Moderator ! !! any hint please!!
Moderator’s note: Even I haven’t seen the list yet! And even if I knew, I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise.
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:45 am
Can’t wait to vote. Obviously Roly Poly Dude is not on the list but until he officially gets a name that’s what I call him.
Thanks SDZ for letting us in on the fun
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:22 am
Thanks for the updates. Also hope P. Wong write conversation with Gao Gao, or Su lin or Zhen Zhen.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:25 am
I can’t wait – I’m so excited!
I scored a win with ZZ, but missed out on the winning name for our X-man. Hoping for 2 out of 3!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:12 am
Deb, I can ASSURE YOU Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce was sent in…. I can also bet that at least one SDZ person VOTED ON IT! Got her hungry.. but yep we know it… she voted for it!!! The only problem is the translation came out real bad (*&^%$#@#&%&( Looks real bad from this side… Oh well.. Regardless he will ALWAYS be our little Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:22 am
Could not find a way to edit a question so I’ll ask in a new post. Will the SDZ staff be allowed to vote for the little Chubikins name?
Moderator’s note: Yes.
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:40 am
To all my FELLOW BEAR NUTS… they have posted the Ultra sound of the Polar bear!!! Do not miss out on the most amazing video IN THE WORLD! Brought to you by out one and only SDZ!!! You all are totally wonderful to share all of these great moments in the animals lives!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:01 am
This is so exciting! I’m impressed with the care taken to choose a name appropriate to both Chinese traditions and to the unique personality of the cub. I can’t wait to find out what the little guy’s name will be.
I hope the public vote coincides with the staff favorite! Thank you for giving us a chance to vote!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:29 am
Cannot wait for the list to come out….You are all amazing to sift through all of the countless entries….but that is a testimonial to how dedicated the team is to The Panda Bears and how loved and dedicated the fans of the Pandas are to all of your research and education that you are putting out to the public!!! You can see how appreciated you are by all of the emails and the huge following all of you have at the wonderful San Diego Zoo and the Panda Research Team!!! Thank you….

October 23rd, 2009 at 7:43 am
Can’t wait to vote! Mr. Chubby Cubbie will finally have a name. He deserves something really special.
Just watched the polar bear ultrasound video. Amazing.
SDZ thankyou for all you do for the polar bears and the pandas.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:43 am
# 55 Lucilla, Chanel No. 5!! I am sure that if it turns out our mellow fellow is Bai Yun’s last cub; she will remember lovingly his smell for the rest of her life. Even if she has another cub, they are most likely all special to her as they are to us.
Moderator: you should suggest the Chanel No. 5 test for Bai Yun to the keepers…
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:49 am
# 47 Anna, No, Baiby will never win over mamma. I am sure there will be plenty of occasions when he will give her a hard time, she might let him win as part of a play bout, but at the end of the day, mamma Bai always wins!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:58 am
P Wong #39: Fabulous! As ususual
Tina #64: Thank You for the heads up about the Polar Bear Ultrasound Video! I echo you! The SDZ is absolutey the BEST Zoo in the world!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:10 am
I’m so far behind.
Would someone please tell me what all the other panda names mean? Especially Bai Yun.

October 23rd, 2009 at 8:14 am
Thanks to the SDZ staff for all the wonderful updates. I am so excited and hope my name submission made the list but if not its ok. I do not speak chinese. I am so thrilled this little guy has done so well.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:26 am
I’m hoping one of my name suggestions got into the voting, although any name for that adorable cub will be wonderful, as HE is wonderful!
Bright Hope – Quon Wang
Strong Son – Xiong Zi
Thanks to whoever mentioned the Youtube with Tai and Brian! It was delightful, especially since Tai was the first panda cub I watched from the day after his birth.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:30 am
We all know how VOCAL this wonderful little man can be… we have all seen how he seems to TOTALLY protest when Mommy turns him upside down to “clean him” (my bet is Bai Yun thinks he sounds adorable when he sweaks too and does it on purpose!) Does he make all kinds of noise when Bai Yun has him upside down cleaning him? WE MUST KNOW!!! Can one of you sweet kind wonderful people be noisy and listen and let us know! He just looks like he is yelling at her to stop each time she does it! Please let us panda insane people know!!! This is very important to us! When you all checked his ears in #8 there is no question what that was… CUB = “STOP IT! STOP IT NOW! IF YOU DON’T STOP I’M TELLING MOMMY!” So when Mommy is cleaning him… does he yell?
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:33 am
#25 Margaret- I like the name Little Big Man – Xiao Ju Ren ( I hope this is the right translation:-)
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:35 am
This is exciting!!! I’ve penciled in Nov 17!!!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 am
Little one has been referred to as a mellow cub since his first exam, it is 8:30 A.M. West coast time and the cam shows mom and son sleeping together nose to nose right now, how could this little guy be anything other than mellow with a mom like Bai Yun? This being her 5th cub makes her a confident laid back mom that knows how to relax and enjoy her son. I love Bai Yun so much!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:55 am
Here are a couple of Americanized guidelines to consider when voting for the cub’s name.
1. We like repetition in the name, like Zhen Zhen and Gao Gao, and Shi Shi
2. We don’t like to pronounce it the way the Chinese do. Like Zhen Zhen (”Jun Jun”)
No matter, I am sure we will collectively choose the one name that will come closest to our little guy’s personality.
Staff: Can you give us the first letter of the name you like? Or the last letter?
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 am
Thanks for the update! I am so excited and can’t wait to vote on a name. You guys have done an awesome job!!!
Panda Cam makes my day!
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:07 am
I can’t wait to hear the name choices!
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:09 am
I also meant to ask if we will be getting any updates soon on our other favorite bears, Gao, Su and Zhennie?
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:29 am
thank you as always for the wonderful updates, videos and pixs. No matter what they name him (and it will be the perfect name) he will always be affectionately known to my family as TRO – the rotund one!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:54 am
Thank you, P Wong #39–perfect!
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:10 am
#65 – Tina – thank you so much for the heads up on the polar bear ultrasound. Absolutely amazing.
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 am
Oh great, now their might be two of us! And I thought my name was so unique.
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:18 am
do pandas bite?? are they vicious towards humans??
Moderator’s note: Pandas, like other animals, can and do bite when they feel threatened or are otherwise provoked. Here in San Diego, we are lucky to say that our animals are generally very sweet and friendly towards people. Nonetheless, they are bears, and we treat them as such. We maintain a “protected contact” environment in which our adult bears always have a barrier between them and the people who work with them. This prevents injury to Zoo staff.

tina in sc, i always get a smile when you write, funny gal. keep up the good work so i don’t have to.
lilarose, good try but it looks like they are hip to your plea to hand you either the first or second, could you figure out the rest? Are you good at criptoquates (sp) ?.
I can’t wait to see his name. i wonder if all of our Pandas are on loan from China. thank you staff for all your help. imagine having a job where everyboddy loves you!

October 23rd, 2009 at 10:49 am
Hi, there, you all! P Wong, loved your most recent conversation between Bai and baby cub! It was really cute! As usual, keep them coming!
Got on the AZ pandacam again today, and it is still out! So, looks like we may not get to see Xman today until they get it fixed over the weekend. Hopefully, this cam will be fixed and back online by Monday! Keep your fingers crossed! Maybe check Youtube for recent vids of Xman!
Little chubby cubby was napping in the den laying on his side. Will keep checking in to see what he’s doing off and on today.
Read some of the comments from some of you about your name selections that you put in last week. They were pretty good! I wonder if any of them made the top 5? Hmmmmmm?? We’ll know soon enough when the official list comes out I hope by Monday. Then, we will all know if any of our names made it! Looking forward to voting on them!
Tina, SC, thanks for the Bear Alert on the polar bear ultrasound! I’m going on that page next to take a look at it! Hoping that Chinook IS PREGNANT!!
Well, gonna go for now. Will check back in later on!

Oh meanie moderator! You don’t even give us hints? The cubbie is napping by the den door. (Hint, hint….Shui Xiong, napping bear!) Anyways, going to watch the little take his beauty rest.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:01 am
I submitted the name “Chen Wu” which means “great courage”. It’s not as good a name as “Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce” but I tried!
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:12 am
Moderator – For those of us who can’t make it to the naming ceremony, will it be taped and uploaded to the website? (Like the exams?)
Moderator’s note: Yes.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:32 am
It’s been lots of fun waiting for our “chubby chubbie” to get his name. Can’t wait until Nov 17!!!

Can’t wait to see the list of names for our little fluffy butt.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:58 am
Many may take this the wrong way… those of you that just LOVE to hear him will FULLY understand… Any chance in him getting another shot soon? And just a thought… but… Can we have a back up on Mommy when he gets “the big poke” I don’t think have ever seen a MAD Panda.. but that would be interesting to watch… If you CRANK your speakers on exam #5.. you can so hear mommy in the back (quietly informing) the staff.. “YOU HURTA MY CUB I BREAKA YOU FACE!” As she pounds on the door… Trust me… go back and watch… crank the speakers.. you will hear her!!! Oh and before you poke the baby.. have someone smell his breath for me…
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:00 pm
How about giang da yun large, formidable power ful and strong with yun fo mom
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:34 pm
As with everything SD does I’m glad they don’t want to influence our votes by giving away their favorite name, but hopefully after the voting ends they will share with us which one they are keeping their fingers crossed for.
Question non panda related but since its mentioned here. If Chinook is with cub would this be the first polar bear cub born for the zoo?
Moderator’s note: It will be exciting, but not a “first.” We have had polar bear cubs born here in the past.
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Oh boy….. he’s napping….. again. Is he ever awake?
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Gao Yun — I hope. It is the perfect way to honor this exceptional panda pair who have given all of us such joy!

I am afraid you can get more than one answer to your question from different places .
You may go to youtube search for ” Special Attention to Lin Hui and Lin Ping ” , I am sure you will never
see what happens in the video clip in USA.
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:55 pm
cant wait, cant wait !!
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Darn it! Shouldn’t have submitted my two names on the same day! I am going to fly down there to attend the naming ceremony if one name gets picked.
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I really hope there will be a name meaning mellow fellow on the list because this little guy seems to be taking about anything thrown at him without much of a reaction. He is sleeping now with bamboo on his head and he doesn’t try to move it or from it… I thought it would tickle his nose… And if you think he is fighting back when his mommy is cleaning him, this must be your first cub!! lol Some cubs seem related more to snakes when you see the way they try to escape their mothers which have a hard time holding on them…
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
The arms over the head is just about the cutest thing — reminds me of my first grandchild who slept like that all the time — and the tummy — what a little chubby!
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:37 pm
Name the panda Ace
I love my name.
Ace ace ace ace !
Cmon! It’s an awesome Acely name.
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I am so thrilled about the naming ceremony! I will bring my youngest grandson for the ceremony, since I am lucky enough to live in San Diego. The oldest is in school, and will be so disappointed to miss the ceremony. Both of my boys love it when I come over and show them videos and pics of the baby, plus of Zhen Zhen and Su Lin being positively goofy, as they often are!
So wish the cub were on display for the naming ceremony. Moderator, it seems odd that SDZ is “naming” him, yet he’s not there for it. Has this been the tradition in the past when the other cublets were named?
Either way, I wouldn’t miss it for the world!! And can’t wait for the list to come out, first to see if the name I submitted is on there (tee hee) and secondly, to try to guess which name captivated all of you who so lovingly look after Bai Yun and Chubby Cubby. And then thirdly to get to vote! What a treat! Wow, thanks!
Moderator’s note: Our other cubs have not attended their naming ceremonies. At this tender young age, it’s really in the little one’s best interest to stay snug in the den.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Moderator, could you point me to a posting in the archives that might describe the naming ceremony that is done with the pandas? As I didn’t live in California when the other ceremonies were held, I am not sure what they entail. Would love to read up on it so I can let my grandsons know what to expect when we attend this one. Thanks so much!
Moderator’s note: Our Precious Panda Cub mentions Zhen Zhen’s naming ceremony. I’ll see what info is available for this year’s ceremony.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I look forward to seeing the names that China approves.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:19 pm
“Blessings” would have been a good name.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:32 pm
5:30 EST, thanks for the close up of his round belly!
Moderator, Could you tell me if there are any plans to notify the person who submitted the name? Along with everyone else, I’m looking forward to the naming ceremony.
November 17th, indeed will be another special moment for the SDZ panda program and panda admirers worldwide.
Moderator’s note: I’ll find out.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Candy C., in Des Moines: I totally agree. How can you put a name to all the emotions of love that we feel for this little guy, who’s getting bigger by the day. Alas, I suppose I’ll have to abandon my tag of Bruiser Man, and sometimes-Chubby Cubby. I’m sure my name was eliminated, as it seemed to have a feminine connotation. Whatever name is selected will be as adorable as the little guy himself.
I have been away for 2 weeks, getting some traveling to the mountains done before the snow sets in. So I have really missed seeing all the panda cams. I was so surprised to see how big our little guy is now. Is it my new computer, or has Memphis Zoo and Zoo Atlanta been on the fritz lately? Anyone have a clue?
Thanks to P Wong for the precious conversation. Your imagination rocks!
And a big thanks to everyone involved in the final selection for names. I can only imagine what a huge job that was! We are all excited to finally vote and give our favorite little cubby a name
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
I cant wait to hear the name it will be such an exciting day.
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm
pandafan#2 #91–Shui Xiong is cute (and oh so appropriate)!
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:20 pm
Oh………….. I’ve wanted to be a Vet and after watching the cam/videos I just want to do it all the more!:)
October 23rd, 2009 at 3:50 pm
Heh. Something tells me that no matter what name El Cinco winds up with, many will be calling him Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce anyway.
I mean, it’s brilliantly expressive.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Where did all of you come from? Wish I could read all the blogs but my old eyes would be worn out.(#3 ;Cheryl, please don’t worry about the tears. Mine have been around since I first saw Mei Sheng as a newborn.)
I also mentioned Gao Yun as a possible name for this beautiful and seemingly calm baby boy. But I do not know what that name would mean in Chinese…or Yun Gao. It might be possible that the meanings change when placed with another name. Patience and blessings to everyone! Claudia
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
I just checked in and it looks like Bai is planing a long night of snacking. Where did all that bambo come from? I missed her stocking up. Cute isn’t it?As usual, Chubbie Cubbie has pretty much slept all day. Maybe we should name him the schnoser. (sp).
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:45 pm
I also hope Gao Yun will be the most popular name, but I seem to recall someone saying it had feminine connotations, so I’m afraid that might be what Suzanne mentioned above. However, he’s Chubby Cubby to me for now and, like all of you, I just love him to bits.
Meanwhile, I agree that the polar bear ultrasound was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Those awful-looking sausage thingies her keeper was doling out were pretty grim, but Chinook’s behavior was fabulous. Even my golden retriever isn’t that mellow, and that’s saying a lot.
I marked November 17 on my calendar, along with the time, allowing for the one-hour time difference between Mountain and Pacific, and intend to be glued to the Panda Cam no matter what.
Moderator’s note: Please know that our Panda Cam will not be showing the ceremony, as it takes place elsewhere in the Zoo. However, there will be video available later that day.
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong with the time lapse videos? It speeds by so fast I can barely tell what’s happening. Is there any way to slow them down? I read all the blogs, and find the Mr. Chubbs has done something adorable that I missed, so I go to the time lapse video to try to see it. Whoosh, and it’s done. Help!
I found the Polar Bear ultra sound video by pure happenstance, while trying to check out in the archives if there was anything on naming ceremonies (couldn’t find anything. – don’t forget my post #108, moderator!). There is also a great update on how the new elephants are fitting in.
It all goes to show how wonderful the staff at the SDZ are with their charges. Such great care is taken of these precious animals. Thank you all so much!
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:15 pm
My students (32 third graders) have been following the growth of the panda since we started school in August. We did a lot of brainstorming and thought long and hard to come up with a name. The suspense is killing them (and me). Can’t wait to see the list posted and cast our vote!
Thanks for letting the public be a part of this wonderful experience!
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Hello Moderator,
Can you tell us what Bai Yun was doing on Friday night between 6pm and 6:15? It looked like she was cleaning him up, but then trying to make him lick her nose and mouth. Is she teaching him to clean himself up? After that she seemed to be ready to give him his usual dinner. What is your interpretation? Thanks for shedding any light on this.
Moderator’s note: I do not attempt to explain something I have not seen
Perhaps some of our experienced panda viewers can offer their interpretations….
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
It is Friday at 6:16pm San Diego time…was that cubsters first steps we just saw?
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Also, looking at the time around 18:31 by your timer – what is she doing when she seems to be sitting on her bum but has her front legs straight with her feet on the ground and her head down, (baby not under her but to the side.) Does she sometimes just go from sitting to leaning further and further forward until then her nose hits the ground and she just falls asleep?
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
While it seems that “His Royal Plumpness” sleeps a lot while I’m watching I did watch several days of time lapse & he does spend a lot of time squirming around, trying to get those back legs to work right. He doesn’t seem to fight mamma Bai as much as other pandas – he’s a “laid back panda” I guess
And will do things when he’s ready
Funny how some names fit a certain panda – There was no was question in my mind that Tai Shan (Peaceful Mountain) was the right name – haha, we got the mountain part right but Tai being peaceful – no way
While I voted for all the panda names none seemed to jump out – but as we know a panda grows into it’s name
And now the name, the name – such fun to vote – I wonder if we’ll be able to vote more than once
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
oh my gosh, that lil’ guy is the cutest panda in the whole WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
at school my locker is covered with pictures of giant pandas!! they are by FAR my favorite animal!!!!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
I can’t wait. This will be my third time picking a name. I love all of the past names and I am sure I will love the new baby’s name.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:42 pm
cant wait! Can’t wait to see the list of name “Bao Yu” for our little fluffy butt .
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:50 pm
To our new panda cam friends – while we all wait for the names & moan that our cub is sleeping – check back on some of our other pandas on youtube – there are soooooo mannny – you’ll have a ball
Momma pandas are wonderful moms but when their cubs get to be 5,6,7 months & competing with mom for food she becomes very selfish (Mom will still nurse her cub but still wants all the bamboo for herself & will use the paw move to discourage her cub.)
For a funny video check out “9/4/07~Mei Lan’s New Car~4.08min.” on you tube – it’s Lani’s 1st BD & mom is hogging her car
How Lun managed to climb in the car is too funny
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:37 pm
yes, tina #96, after the cubby squealed post shot, i did hear a warning honk from bai.
i’m thinking the cubbie’s name will have a “mellow” meaning.

Yes P Wong, next lets here a word from Daddy Gao Gao. I have become a total Pandaholic, and this is my first Panda watch. I sent in a name and had trouble finding what the words mean. And as with some names above, your translation is different than mine. I hope that the translators will use the English and translate it themselves, because it seems a phrase is what was used, not just “word for word”. However, I hope that the person who’s name gets picked, gets livetime zoo entry Panda viewing, and a T shirt.
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:30 pm
#70 Danielle in NY of course mamma always wins. Don’t we mothers always feel we win. But to tell the truth, youngsters can and do outshine mammas. Cubbie 5 will do wonderful things for his species because he has such wonderful and strong parents: Gao Gao and Bai Yun!
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:34 pm
There is a wild rumpus going on in the den. Bai Yun has been swishing bamboo over her head. She’s done a couple of sommersaults. (Yes!) Now she’s woken up cubby and is giving him a bath. Bai is in touch with her inner child this evening.
October 23rd, 2009 at 10:46 pm
to post number #39: Your little comic dialouges are really accurate and hillarious you should be a panda translator for SD Zoo or whatever they call them (can’t remember off top of my head)
October 24th, 2009 at 12:38 am
ok, I need help here from the panda watchers. I only found this site when chubbie was born, how much love we all share with natures most beautiful creatures. My problem ( now don’t laugh ) is that I still can’t tell one panda from another. I am wondering how you all do it. If any one has a tip for me it would be a big help to this novice. Of course I can figure out chubbie only by his size.

another cool video to watch that shows how inventive with play baby cubbies can be is the one on you tube – cool tai and his hideout. or for the new to the joys of panda watching and concerned about rough play with mommy, take a look at xi lan and the drinker (its a little shaky because of the crowds but cute), its like when mommy tells you something do it.
October 24th, 2009 at 6:50 am
# 120 Liana, actually, time-lapse is not a real video; it is a succession of pictures taken 2 minutes apart. So if events last less than 2 minutes and happen in between the pictures taken, it is not going to appear. Check the clock when you run time-lapse, the seconds barely moved and the minutes are jumping by a 2 minutes increment.
October 24th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Sleeping on his tummy he looks like Mom just put a fresh diaper on with that pudgy little rump in the air! So So sweet!
October 24th, 2009 at 7:30 am
Well, I think everything that can possibly be said has already been said here, but just the same,
HOW EXCITING! Also, a little bittersweet… time “rolls” on so darn fast for our baby, what with a name now and beginning to walk….well, that’s life really. Baby, if you only knew……
p.s. how WOULD you say “Dr. Fluffernutter McAwesomesauce” in Chinese, anyway?! Appropriate, but that
would be a mouthful, I bet!
Happy weekend, all!
October 24th, 2009 at 7:33 am
Open, Open, Open!! I want to vote AND guess which one the staff loved. I’m flying down to SD for my birthday in December (and to see my daughters). I am going to have them take me to the SDZ to see my panda friends. Thank you for all your hard work making this so enjoyable for all of us!!
October 24th, 2009 at 7:33 am
pps. P wong-outstanding! you make me laugh! hope you write children’s books! ha!
October 24th, 2009 at 8:13 am
Good Morning Panda Family
!
Sorry I wasn’t here much yesterday, I’m fighting many things medically and otherwise. Please forgive me if this entry is long.
Cheryl–don’t ever apologize and consider yourself a “crybaby”. Be proud of your tender heart girlfriend, this world would be a much better place if more people allowed themselves to “feel” rather than “think”. From one “crybaby” to another–know you are understood and respected!
Sue McCurdy–Li Shen or “powerful deep thinker” is BEAUTIFUL and fitting. I’ve always felt our baby’s eyes seem wise beyond his tender age. I hope it made the list!!
Maureen in Stanwood MI–as usual, you always have wise knowledge to share with us newbies. Thanks again, it really helps us.
P Wong–you are sooo talented. I could “see” the conversation in my mind. Thank you and let your creative juices continue to flow.
Jennie So Cal–I don’t remember where, but somewhere they named a cub “Butterstick” so I’m not sure “Butter Dude” will make the cut. Please don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t. I trust the people at the SDZ to come up with the perfect choices.
Tina 65–Thanks for the “heads-up” on the polar bear ultrasound. I will definitely watch it today or tomorrow if I can’t today. I really appreciate being kept informed.
Liana–Someone was nice enough to point out to me that the timelapse is a series of pictures taken 2 minutes apart. That’s why we sometimes cannot go back and view something that happened. Hope this helps!
Moderator—THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I was wondering myself if the naming ceremony would be videoed for those of us who could not attend. God Bless EVERYONE involved in making it possible for those of us who can’t attend to still be part of this momentous occasion. I just knew the SDZ would not let us down!!! Lots of Gratitude and Love from NJ
P.S. Carina–thanks for asking the question !
Tanda 78–I will never forget when I told my pediatrician that my first-born breast-fed baby of 3 weeks was sleeping eight hours thru the night; his reply was that it was the sign of a confident mother. Although at the time I thought he was just being nice, I’ve learned a lot since then and I believe WHOLE-HEARTEDLY that you are 100% correct in stating that our little “mellow fellow” is that way because of our beautiful Bai Yun.
KISSES, KISSES, KISSES AND GENTLE LITTLE SQUEEZES TO OUR BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH IT HURTS SOMETIMES. xxxxxxxx ooooooooo
BEAUTIFUL BAI YUN–NO WORDS COULD EVER EXPRESS THE HONEST RESPECT AND ADMIRATION I HAVE FOR SUCH AN INCREDIBLE EXAMPLE OF GOD’S HANDIWORK!!! LOVE YOU BIG GIRL, AND IF IT WAS ALLOWED, I WOULD TAKE THE RISK AND GIVE YOU THE HUG YOU DESERVE!!!
xxx ooo
October 24th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Yay! Panda cub naming ceremony is on my mom’s birthday.
October 24th, 2009 at 8:31 am
IHN from Asia,
Please forgive my ignorance, but I’m confused by your directive to watch “Special Attention to Lin Hui and Lin Ping”. What is it you want us to see? It looked to me like the zoo worker was trying to coax Lin Hui to let him have Lin Ping and was trying to do so in a very friendly, non-threatening way. Obviously, it didn’t work. Am I missing something, were you trying to teach us something else that I’m not catching?
October 24th, 2009 at 8:59 am
#129 Maureen, thanks for the lead on the video “Mei Lan’s New Car,” I forward these on to family and friends. This was a great video, and I love what I call “play swagger” that they get into when getting ready to run and “attack” the other panda in play. They sure can move fast, can’t they! That upside down drop into the car was hilarious! I did have my doubts!
October 24th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Suzanne, thanks for explaining the voting procedure in detail. Exciting, exciting!!! Thanks for letting us pandaholics choose a name for this cute panda baby boy. I also hope that the name will be G…Y… which will honour daddy as well. But if not, I am sure that whatever name will be chosen is going to suit the little man. He is such a character so that only one name is hardly gonna cover his personality. P. Wong, sweet conversation as always, more please!
October 24th, 2009 at 9:24 am
As we all sit and wait for a chance to name our new baby…you may pass the time in a fun way by checking out the ‘U.S. Panda Reunion at the Pumpkin Patch’ on Pandas Live On. It is absolutely adorable…showing all of our pandas in the U.S. I printed myself a copy to enjoy all day long.
October 24th, 2009 at 10:43 am
Phillys #144, I think she was reminding us that they interact with thier bears and even hand feed them.

October 24th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Started watching this little fellow from a suggestion of a friend(total animal lover),now I find I am hooked.Check in several times a day and always before bed, love to see him and momma playing.I think a fitting name would be Xiao Wang Zi Little Prince.
October 24th, 2009 at 11:08 am
#135 Mary Ellen. Don’t be embarrassed if you can’t tell the pandas apart. It takes quite awhile to see the subtle differences between the shapes of their eye patches, size of their ears, length of their snouts, width of their shoulder saddles, and height of black markings on their back legs. To a newbie panda watcher, pandas tend to all look the same, but they are definitely different with distinct personalities! The SDZ pandas are very easy to tell apart: Daddy Gao Gao is much smaller than his gorgeous wife Bai Yun and looks exactly like a teddy bear. He is very round with an adorable snub snout. He is very easy to spot because he’s missing part of an ear which gives him a lop-sided look. Su Lin has a very round face, fluffy cheeks, an endearing panda smile, and a long snout. Zhen Zhen has her Daddy’s snub snout, but otherwise looks like Susie except she’s much smaller. When she’s on Panda Cam, she’s usually up a tree. Bai Yun is the biggest of the pandas and Plumpers is the smallest, of course. I hope that helps a bit.
October 24th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Today around noon, mom was very restless and seemed like she was covering up the camera light, and burying the baby, and just couldnt wait for him TO DO SOMETHING beside play dead. Maybe that sleepy stuff is a defence mechinism for “hope this big bear doesnt eat me squeak squeak” You got to know that there are alot of squeaks in there, just from the little cute squeaks during an exam….she was tossing him around like a rag doll. But you cant interfere, unless you think she may sit on him………….right…….maybe you want to make sure she will not hurt her own baby so we are more careful to let her get used to people?? Like I heard that some mothers of forgot what types, if they smell human on the baby they kill it? Wonder about the long hair of the handlers etc
October 24th, 2009 at 12:20 pm
OH the camera moved at least I know that someone was watching that rugh stuff.
October 24th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
How nice to be among others who are also so addicted to panda watching. I first watched Bai Yun with Su Lin and could not get enough. I’d watch late at night and early morning and was lucky to have glimpses of baby climb from mommy’s tummy to nurse. I could never get enough. Now, here we are again, and I am just as hooked and think this adorable little bundle is somehow part of my own personal life. I watch him all the time and can’t wait to know his name.
October 24th, 2009 at 1:07 pm
Jennie So Cal – Butterstick is Tai Shan. When he was first born he was the size of a stick of butter. When the naming was going on, people were mad because they wanted Butterstick as one of the choices. There is even an obeybutterstick website, where they had signs that you could print out and place all over D.C.
October 24th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
I cannot wait to name the Panda. The baby boy panda is growing up before our eyes. This is so great.
October 24th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Thanks to all of you who helped explain about the Panda Cam Time Lapse video. I was asking about the speed of it only because on YouTube so many of the videos posted are not available to us, and yet the credits say that they are part of the Panda Cam of the San Diego Zoo. So I thought perhaps I was doing something wrong in watching the hyper-active, speed-by-like-a-bullet time lapse video.
DoxieMom is one who posts videos to YouTube all the time, so I guess I should contact her to find out how she gets those s . l . o . w videos.
On another note, got to see Mr Chubbs take some very real steps today. He wasn’t really lurching either, so it’s exciting to see him try to move forward. Phyllis (#142), your comments about Bai Yun being such a great mom resulting in Mr Chubbs being so mellow rang so true! She’s so relaxed with him, and he seems to be just as calm as can be, except of course when she has him upside down and he doesn’t want to be!
Just way too cute no matter which way we get to see him and momma Bai!
October 24th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
I was thinking of Gao Yun or Xiao’lun.
October 24th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
I’m exited to vote. I plan to visit the zoo..never been and have never seen a panda up close. I can’t wait.
October 24th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
maryellen
I’m a newbie myself and so sometimes I have a bit of trouble myself. Here goes::
Gao Gao is a bit shorter and is missing part of his left ear due to his being attacked before he was even one
Bai Yun is bigger and has the perfect panda face and demeanor
Su Lin is difficult because she is a younger version of her mom, really strong resemblance
Zhen Zhen is still a little smaller and her eyes are closer set than Bai Yun’s and Su Lin’s
Baby is little and I think his eyes are going to be a little wider spread like his Daddy Gao Gao’s
That’s all I’ve been able to decipher so far, anything to add more experienced pandaholics????
October 24th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Claudia, #151/2 — I think the story that some mothers kill their baby if they smell human on them is an old wives’ tale. I know it isn’t true with baby birds that fall out of the nest and someone picks them up to put them back in.
Mary Ellen #135 — It will take some time for you to tell the pandas apart. You do know there is a legend at the bottom of the cam page that tells which bear is on which camera, don’t you? Just take note of the markings that Deb #150 said. In the case of the pandas at National Zoo, it’s easy to tell those 3 apart — just look at the eye patches and shoulder saddles. The papa bear, Tian Tian, has vertical rectangle eye patches, and Mei’s & Tai’s eye patches are round. Mei’s shoulder stripe is much wider than the boys. It is nice to know which of these magnificent animals you are watching. They seem like old friends.
October 24th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
First time for me following Panda Cam and to me he will always be Chubby Cubby….forever!
October 24th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Last night when I looked in on the panda cam, I saw Bai Yun lean forward and put her head on the floor, and then suddenly she did a somersault and ended up on her back with her back feet sticking up in the air. She had a long piece of bamboo and looked like she was playing with it with all four paws. Then she got up and did the same thing again. Was she playing, and is that common for an adult panda? I was a bit on the edge of my seat when it looked at one point like she was going to roll towards the cub…
October 24th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
# 135 maryellen, on this website, it is easy. At the bottom of the pandacam you have “CAM” followed by a number. If you look below the pandacam, there is a list with the camera numbers and which panda is on which camera. Sometimes when the pandas are rotating enclosures, there is a short time before the list is changed, but at the present times, the pandas do not change enclosures. On the other zoo websites, you can find a “meet the pandas” page where descriptions and pictures of the pandas are posted. That should help you to learn to recognize the pandas. Enjoy!!

#156 – Liana -most of the panda videos on youtube are from dedicated panda cam watchers that recorded a funny event & posted it to youtube (have no idea how they do it but thank them. So if you see Doxiemom – she has recorded an event as it happened (but you may also see a note that video has been speeded up)
I envy Doxiemom to see so many great events live & then record them for all of us to see. I have to check in many times a day but usually see ” His Royal Plumpness” (guess my favorite name will be gone soon) sound asleep
October 24th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Wow. Bai has left her cub for several hours, according to the time lapse cam. Is this usual at this age? Earlier she seemed to be checking him more often, but this evening she seems to have forgotten the little one.
Moderator’s note: It’s very common and she has not forgotten him.

Tales of The Panda Prince
Baby : (squirm, squeak) Momma?
Bai Yun : Yes baby?
Baby : Is that your “name” Momma?
Bai Yun : (soft smile) Why, yes it is baby! All cubs call their Mother by that name. But I also have another name given to me by the Human Tribes and that is “White Cloud”. The Humans like to honor our kind with special names that describe our character and spirit. It is said that great blessings of joy and happiness shall follow the giver of our name on their lifes journey.
Baby : (chirp, wriggle) So what is my “name” Momma? Is it “Baby” or “Precious Little Cub”?
Bai Yun : (chuckling) Both of those names are what Mothers call their cubs and you will always be my “Baby” and “Precious Little Cub”. The Human Tribes have been toiling greatly to make your new “name” my precious little cub. Some say they have been seeking wisdom from elders far away in our homelands in the Mountains. Cubs of our kind are very special to them and they choose the wisest of their Tribes to take great care in the giving of our names. And so what “name” would you choose for yourself baby?
Baby : (sqeak, squirm) Gosh Momma, I’m just not sure! I like my Dad’s name “Big Big”, but then I like your name too Momma ! It is soft and pretty, just like you
Bai Yun : (soft, gentle smile) (nuzzling baby) Soon, after one more passing of the Moon, my precious little cub shall have his “Name Day”! The Human Tribes will gather once again with their cubs to feast and visit us and to honor you
Baby : (chirp chirp) Momma?
Bai Yun : Yes baby?
Baby : (squeak) Do “names” have scents?
Bai Yun : (ear flip, raised eyebrows) You show wisdom beyond your time my precious little cub!! Yes, things that have been given “names” each have a scent. We shall have many more lessons very soon . I shall be so proud to one day hear that my special cub has become the Elder of his Tribe. Hmmm, maybe that will be your given name “Wise Cloud” or “Big Knowledge”! (chuckle)
Baby : (sqeak, squeak, wriggle) I love you Momma. You always make my heart feel warm and happy
Bai Yun : (nuzzling cub) And I love you little “Wise Cloud”
October 24th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
We want to name him ‘Stubby’ because of his short little arms and legs. Why do all the names have to be Chinese?
October 24th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
This morning, baby was waving his hands and saying something, maybe he felt hungry and called mummy to come back. It’s so addictive watching his movement. May be “gun gun”(滚滚), which means rolling back and forth,or rolly polly. is a good name for him, considering his body and his behavior.
October 24th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Our cub will be spending alot of time upside down in trees and while playing on various yard structures. Maybe that is why his mom keeps him hanging on occasion. Besides bathing him, of course.
I agree the Panda time lapse video is ridiculously fast. I don’t bother with it anymore. Surely it can be slowed enough to see a little detail?
October 24th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Panda fast cams says baby has been alone since 15:00, about 3 o’clock, and its ten when I look again. Hope he is not cold. No not with all that fuzz and plumpness…..hey there is an odd thing in the corner, hope its a shadow, and not a mess.
October 24th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Baby Panda is doing his imitation of laying down climbing. Since mom left a nice bamboo stick there to lay against. He is straddling the stick and resting against it. Way to “imprint” on him nice bamboo, nice bamboo.
October 25th, 2009 at 7:38 am
Good morning all and what a beautiful morn it is here in the mountains of NY. Our peak time for our Fall leaf colors and they are brilliant. Someone awhile back brought up how China houses their Pandas. I too was saddened when I saw the cages and nothing but cement to sleep on. So I turn to the experts to maybe shed light on why China has decided to house their Pandas the way that they do.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Good morning, Miss ZZ! Looks like you are buried in your breakfast boo and enjoying it!
Thanks, cam people for showing us ZZ today! She is a very pretty panda girl and loves to bury herself in bamboo!
Will keep getting on pandacam to see little boy today. Read that he may be starting to do some walking?!? WOW!!! This little guy is determined to get going, isn’t he? Missed getting on the cam yesterday since I was very busy doing some things. So, I’ll make up for it today!
Gonna go for now.

Phyllis #142: I think you must be a very loving, tender, and beautiful person. Hope your health issue is not serious.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:30 am
Holly#158: If you think you are smitten by these beautiful creaturesnow, just wait until you see them in the flesh. You will be a goner! Whatever you miss by watching the cams, comes to full life, and they will be ingraved in your heart forever! I can’t explain what it is. They are magic animals.

Where can one find Chinese “word” translations? All I find are symbols.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:07 am
I really like watching Mr. Chubba Cubba napping while flexing those huge paws. What a sight.
October 25th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Is it common with all zoos outside China that they must approve the final names chosen? If so, why? If they do not like a name will they substitute one that they like. It’s such hard work for all you SDZ workers and we are all excited. We just like to know all that goes into naming our little “little cubbie” as well as all other cubbies.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Liana #156, I get those s.l.o.w. videos by recording daily the SDZ cameras using special software. When I see something that I want to share with other panda lovers, I produce a video using different software. Sometimes if I see enough comments on the blog regarding an event, I’ll find the footage and produce a video.
I have no affiliation to the zoo. Like all of you, I am a pandaholic who loves these precious animals, follows the blogs, and supports the SDZ in their efforts!! I am completely, and totally captivated by “BaiBy” and in awe of Bai Yun’s mothering instincts! Su Lin, ZZ and Gao Gao continue to enchant and delight me with their distinct personalities!
Thank you SDZ for your informative blogs and your caring staff!!
October 25th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
why does mommy continue to bring so much bamboo into the den? poor lb (little baby, little bro ..as i like to call him) looks lost in all of it. hes so adorable. i love the panda cam!
October 25th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Seeing ZZ sleeping in a tree just now, reminded me of one of the three videos from the Smithsonian Channel about pandas in the wild that have been posted on the “Pandas Live ON” website. Would ZZ have been born in the wild, it could very well be her sleeping at the top of a tree in the mountains of China.. That panda looked as happy and comfortable in his tree as ZZ does in hers…
October 25th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
I hope Roly Poly made the cut too!
October 25th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Is it just me or this one sleepy little chublet? Every time I check on the live cam, he’s snoring away! I did see him try to walk a bit earlier today, but it clearly exhausted him, because since then he’s been in sleep mode. Is it normal for them to be so tired at such a young age?
I also have another question. Does the mother panda enforce the weaning process, or does the zoo intervene and separate baby and mom at about 17 months? I saw on the stats that it seems to be at about 17 or 18 months that they are weaned, but I couldn’t find any information about who initiates and insists on it. I did see one video on YouTube with Bai Yun and Zhen Zhen when she was weaning, and clearly the cub didn’t want to stop! Just curious!
I love all the information that everyone posts here, and all the helpful information from the moderators. You guys are terrific! Thanks for all that you do to keep us pandaholics informed!
Moderator’s note: Suzanne Hall wrote a series of posts describing the steps taken for Zhen Zhen’s weaning that you may find informative: http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/blog/2009/02/03/weaning-zhen-zhen-step-1/

Claudia #151 and #152 Don’t worry too much about Bai Yun’s “roughing up” her cub. I have seen this all before, and wait till they start playing together outside when he is bigger! It gets wild! And wait till he climbs to the top of a skinny swaying tree! If the staff believes things are not going well, they would deal with it, I am sure. As in all of wildlife, bad things happen–such as with the newborn elephant whose “beginner” mom accidently injured her. This happens in natural settings, too. We have to think positively about those situations we observe and trust in the staff, and especially the wonderful mothers of these cubs. When Bai Yun buries her boy, I figure she is doing the equivalent of “sending him to his room!” He always comes out unscathed.
October 25th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I am really excited about getting to vote for the cubs name. I always count day the days to the big event just wish I could be there.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Dear Panda Team,
It’s so wonderful how you care for these beautiful, precious creatures, and share it with all of us. Living on the East Coast, I’ve only been able to visit them twice. It’s always SO EXCITING when the babies are born. Naming the little cuties is almost as exciting!! Someone please give the little one a hug and kiss for me! Thank you for being so kind and generous. ph
October 25th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
I really hope Napping Bear, Big Cloud, and Roly Poly made it. (Napping Bear especially, I put that in!)

October 25th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Hi from Raiatea, Society Islands. I am so excited …… just checked cubby, and he’s sleeping peacefully. And he’s grown so much since last Wednesday. I’m so glad I got to see him. I won’t be back until November 5th or 6th; I hope I don’t miss the naming process. I love that there’s one you all favor. I hope it’s chosen to HONOR you all for your dedication and love you give all the animals. If I get internet access, I’ll check back. I don’t have time to read all the postings. Hope all is well with everyone.

I wait anxiously for the big five. Go Cubbie Go

Jeanneb (#181), you can find Chinese word translations in the Mandarin Book website. This website is just loaded with english translations of Chinese words and Chinese word translations of English. This site has Chinese words in Mandarin, pinyin, as well as the Chinese characters to the English words you want to see translated. You’ll enjoy it! That’s where I got my name combinations for the cub based on my English words that I wanted to translate. It’s a very good, informative site! Have fun!
Was on the pandacam very late tonite (12 midnite EDT), and saw the little cubbie sound asleep in the den! I did get on the cam earlier today, and the cubbie was asleep then! Trying to catch him when he gets active! Will keep watching the cam. I’m hoping that the AZ pandacam will be back up and online for us by tomorrow (Monday). Been missing seeing Xi Lan the Xman this last week!
Well, gonna get to bed. Looks like it will be the NY Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series—the New England Series I’m calling it!

Conversations between Zhen Zhen and Meng Meng(a beautifu panda in beijing zoo)
Zhen Zhen: Hello, I can see you, Who are you?
Meng Meng: I am Meng Meng. Oh, I like your tree, having grenn leaves.
Zhen Zhen: Oh, I see, you are great, how can you talk to me on the top of the tree? (She is so fat, how stable this tree is.)
Meng Meng: I practiced a lot. You are eating carrot?
Zhen Zhen: Yes, I love it, and my cousin likes apple. What’s your favorite treat?
Meng Meng: Watermelon and chiken wing, delicious.
Zhen Zhen: Maybe I should try it. I have a younger brother now, but he doesn’t have a name, I should think of it, it’s also sister’s responsibility.
Meng Meng: What about chiken wing, i love it very much.
Zhen Zhen: Noway, he is not chicken wing. I am Zhen Zhen, You are Meng Meng, and My father is Gao Gao. Maybe I should call him Boo Boo.
Meng Meng: Why?
Zhen Zhen: It’s cute, and it reminds of my favorite thing, bamboo, it’s so meaningful, and I bet he will like bamboo too.
Meng Meng:But he is not bamboo, is your advice can be received by the naming team?
Zhen Zhen: No, I am late now. However, I will call him whatever I want, I am his bigger sister.
Meng Meng: OK, but don’t Boo Boo.
Zhen Zhen: I have to think over it, it’s a time consuming job.

Conversation with Bai Yun #20
Cubbie #5: … (K-A-P-O-W-!)
Bai Yun: Hello, Cubbie dear.
C: Squeak (Hello, Mama.)
B: Practicing your typing?
C: Squeak (Yes, Mama.)
B: Are you writing a story?
C: Squeak (No, I’m compiling a favorite list of names.)
B: You want to call yourself “KA POW!,” huh?
C: Squeak (Doesn’t that sound good to you?)
B: It’s not Chinese…
C: Squeak (Oh. How about “KER SPLAT!,” Mama?)
B: No, dear. Not Chinese, either.
C: Squeak (”Kung Pao”?)
B: Now that’s Chinese… Means “Palace Protector,” a historical civil title.
C: Squeak (Wow! Great!)
B: But it needs to be in Pinyin.
C: Squeak (Pinyin?)
B: It’s the romanization system used today in China.
C: Squeak (Huh?)
B: You should type G-O-N-G B-A-O.
C: Squeak (OK. Thank you, Mama.)
(In Gao Gao’s yard)
Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
Gao Gao: Hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: Hey, I heard you received email from Cubbie #5.
G: Yeah, he’s all excited.
T: Excited about what?
G: He likes the name Gong Bao.
T: Wasn’t that a governor of Sichuan Province?
G: Yup, a governor that cooked.
T: Wow. He has such high aspirations.
G: But first things first.
T: What?
G: He’ll start by being celebrity chef on SDZ Panda Cam.
T: That’s it! Then he’ll go for governor.
G: Yeah, of California.

Tiny 171
I looked up “wise cloud” just to see and I think the choices would be:
Gao Ming Yun–smart, clever, wise, brilliant cloud
Zhe Yun–wise (phyilosophy) cloud
Cong Yun–quick at hearing, wise, clever, sharp witted, intelligent, acute cloud
Interesting, isn’t it? Did you submit any of these?
Loved your story either way.

Dianne in Texas #179,

October 26th, 2009 at 6:13 am
i just this ste l love to go and see them anytime i want to
October 26th, 2009 at 7:01 am
At what age do they normally start seriously crawling on all fours?
Moderator’s note: Check our Panda Cub Milestones page.
October 26th, 2009 at 7:09 am
I am so excited and hoping that the favorite was Gao Yun. I think I was the first one to mention and/or suggest that name for our precious baby boy. I also want to thank everyone that chimed in that really liked the name! I just hope that one of my suggestions made the list. My other favorites are Wei Bao – valuable treasure and Wei Sheng – Greatness is born.
Can’t wait to see the final list! Never dreamed I would ever be able to participate in voting for a panda cub’s name much less suggest one for you all to consider. Thank you again SDZ for all you do for us pandaholics.
October 26th, 2009 at 8:09 am
To Doxie Mom #184: I want to thank you for the time you spend making the videos! They are wonderful!
To Tiny # 171: Very sweet conversation!
To Moderator: Do you have any idea what day this week the list of names will be placed on the site? And, how many days we will have to vote? I’m going to be without computer access from 10/27 through 10/31 unless I go to a public library. Yikes!!!
Moderator’s note: See paragraph #4.
October 26th, 2009 at 8:44 am
#171 Tiny — beautiful! #198 P Wong — wonderful, as usual.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:03 am
I’m very excited, I hope my submission is picked! Sorry, Roly Poly apparently is not translatable, I thought that would be perfect too! I guess that wouldn’t be very distinguished for an adult who will be, no doubt, a daddy to many roly poly’s. Can’t wait to see him and his whole family when we come for a visit in January! Thanks for all the great info you folks at SDZ give us, you are the best!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Happy Birthday to SDZ’s one-year-old sun bear twins, born October 25 last year!
October 26th, 2009 at 9:37 am
I will be visiting Chubikins tuzzin Tai this weekend in Tai-land and I will ask him what name he likes for this new widdle one so I hope the list gets posted soon. I do think ZZ is right and she’s the big sis and can call him anything she wants. I haven’t been right on voting for the winning choice since Tai and Su lin so I hope my luck gets better.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Hello….
When you do put out the list of names to vote on, will you please put their definitions along with them?
I have already forgotten what Gao Yun means and some of the others that might be in the top.
Thanks…..
Moderator’s note: Certainly.
October 26th, 2009 at 9:56 am
I personally like Gao Yun, to honour both parents. But… whatever the name I am sure we will all love him the same.
He remains Chubby Cubbie till the 17th.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:01 pm
NOT Gao Yun please! I understand the sentiment behind the name, but unfortunately for the Cantonese speakers, the name would be the sound of a male body part! I for one would never be able to say his name out loud. If the name is indeed on the list, I hope the SDZ staff would consult some Cantonese speakers in addition to the Mandarin ones and reconsider. Thanks.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
Maybe I missed it (I browsed through the blog) but I haven’t seen any mention of when this “little” guy will be introduced to the public. Any idea? Thanks!
Moderator’s note: If all continues to go well, he should make his public debut around mid-December.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
P Wong #198: Fantastic and funny conversations. I think this one is your best yet. But, look out. You may have competition from Tiny and Jenny. This is getting more fun by the day. We’re all getting antsy to see the voting list. (Hope we don’t crash the site again!)
October 26th, 2009 at 3:35 pm

The ceremony to be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 17 will be simple. San Diego Zoo representatives will provide details about the Zoo’s conservation efforts associated with the giant panda and details about our little male cub. Following this discussion, the name will be ceremoniously unveiled. It will be a surprise for even the Panda Team!
#111 Elizabeth
We greatly appreciate the time and thought that went into the name suggestions, and we will happily attempt to contact the person who suggested our little guy’s name.
October 26th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Public Relations: Thanks for the feedback. I was curious since we had to submit our names and emails with the name entries/suggestions.
Moderator: Thanks for following up with my question.
October 26th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I hope the little guy is named WeiWei (pronounced wayway) which means “brave” and is the affectionate nickname of a very brave little boy who grew up here in Madison,Ohio, and now lives in South Africa.
October 27th, 2009 at 12:05 am
#197 Jenny, ZZ saying she will call her brother what she wants no matter what he is named, reminded me of friend of mine. Her mom couldn’t decide what to name her, and her grandma said whatever you name her I’m going to call her Shelley, which is how she came to be named Michelle.
#198 P Wong, I agree, this is one of your best conversations. Picturing a panda as governor of California
keeps sending me into fits of giggles. It is a good idea, though. Pandas are good at balancing, which could only be good news for the budget.
I can hardly wait to see the list of 5 names to choose from, for cub #5.
October 27th, 2009 at 10:13 am
My entire office of R.N. watch this beautiful baby every day. We wait to here his name. He is such an adorable fellow. Of course I wish the name I submitted wins but whatever is chosen we will embrace. We love the Chinese people for there generosity in sharing these special creatures with us. Thank you, Tami and the nurses at East County Adult Mental Health.
October 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
I love how much love is whirling around this baby panda! I love to get caught up in it. I love to watch him grow… like a plant only so much more exciting… obviously. Looking forward to voting for his name. I think of all the other people out there watching him and the Panda’s ~ it brings me so much joy. Truly… thank you to the SD Staff for being so excellent to the Panda’s.
October 27th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Its so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut! I hope my name wins! The name I picked the name micky.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
Is it too late to submit a name?
Moderator’s note: Yes, our naming poll closed October 19.
October 27th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
I’ve asked friends at work for ‘proper’ spelling in English for Chinese names that I wanted to enter. Where was the notice of a contest naming? I never heard of one?!! As a member of the zoo for many years, isn’t it time the public got to enter a name for the baby Panda? I love and exist for these Pandas! I want to enter the following names for additional consideration PLEASE!
beloved – zhi ai
innocent – chun jie
best friend – hao peng you
peacemaker – he ping shi zhe
Thank you for this consideration.
Wendy
Moderator’s note: The online naming poll was posted on our Panda Cam page for 8 days and an explanation of how folks could submit names was provided in the post Panda Panda Bo-panda. In addition, we sent out a press release to media worldwide, posted the naming opportunity on Facebook and “tweeted” about it. Whew!
October 28th, 2009 at 12:00 am
another name on list”
world’s friend – shi jie you ren
loved one – ai de shi zhe
Thank you, again.

He is so well behaved, quiet and patience with all the “human” intervention. I would like to name him Soul – referencing to the brave heart he has, wise and patient to match – smart enough to look and see but be paitent with all the humans around him

Patiently waiting to vote on a name. How exciting. Will have to make it there some day soon to visit:)
October 28th, 2009 at 11:28 am
I think giving him his father and mothers name is perfect for him. I am so excited to see him in person, He is my biggest highlite for when I come to San Diego in a couple of months. You are a fantastic team. My daughter enjoys working with the zoo. I sure hope I can meet a couple of you in person. Thanks for all the great info since he was born on August 5th. Take Care.
October 28th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
I just this morning read in our paper that you were looking for name ideas. I love what I named my huge toy panda when I was about ten (I’m now 67). I looked up the scientific name, and took a piece of it: Ailuropoda melanoleuca, and named him Poda.
I had him for years and years and he was big and beautiful and very realistic looking.
Thanks.

As soon as I saw the panda baby I thought DOMINO. I said it out loud and my husband said that is perfect and his nickname can be “DOM”.

I am 7 years old and just did a school report on Pandas. We used several pictures of Hua Mei on my poster and learned more facts about her. It is fun to visit the web cam and watch the pandas. We can’t wait to see the names and vote. I go to St. Pius School in Loudonville NY (near Albany). I am going to let my Second Grade Class know how to visit the site and learn all about the Panda Bears. It was great to learn more and I had fun!!
Moderator’s note: Thank you for teaching your classmates about pandas, Aidan! Perhaps one day you will be a panda researcher or panda keeper.

My son, Aidan, and I had a blast looking at all the info on the site. I visited to zoo a very long time ago. Someday I hope to bring my kids. I feel a connection to Hua Mei beacuse we just welcomed twin boys this summer, Liam
& Owen. I can’t wait to vote and watch you little boy & my little boys grow together!! congratulations on a wonderful accomplishment!! He is a handsome guy!!

I really enjoy the “To Name a Panda” event. So far I am two for two, with Su Lin and Zhen Zhen. I can’t wait to see what the names will be on Saturday. I usually plan a special visit once the babies come out, so I can visit my adopted pandas. I love it!!!

I am freaking now, the naming contest starts tomorrow, but can you please tell me what time it starts? The time has already been announced a thousand times already, I know, but I’ve scanned and can’t locate it….
Please, please, please??
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
