7th Exam: Mellow Fellow

Posted at 4:24 pm October 15, 2009 by admin

panda_exam7It seemed to be nap time for our little panda fellow during his seventh exam this morning, October 15. Now 71 days old (10 weeks), he made a few small squawks, but nothing loud enough to concern his mother, Bai Yun, who was busily munching on her bamboo on the other side of the exam room wall. Dr. Geoff Pye, the attending veterinarian, said the cub’s teeth seem to be on the verge of erupting through his gums.

Below are the latest measurements, comparing our newest cub with his siblings at approximately the same age:

Hua Mei, Day 74:
8.4 lbs (3.8 kg); 22 in (57 cm) long; 14 in (36.5 cm) chest girth

Mei Sheng, Day 72:
8.15 lbs (3.7 kg); 21 in (54 cm) long; 16 in (41 cm) chest girth

Su Lin, Day 70:
7.6 lbs (3.4 kg); 23 in (58.5 cm) long; 13.7 in (35 cm) chest girth

Zhen Zhen, Day 75:
8.6 lbs (3.9 kg); 21 in (54 cm) long; 15 in (38 cm) chest girth

2009 Cub, day 71:
8.15 lbs (3.7 kg); 22 in (57 cm) long; 15 in (38 cm) chest girth

  5. Linda says:

I agree with you Lid… watching Bai Yun roll him around is entertaining. I also like to watch him flip, i’d say he’s a gymnast in the making.

  6. kathy, canada says:

Just when you think he can’t possibly get any cuter, he does!! He’s off the charts adorable! Thank you for the latest report and video and all the comparison stats!

  12. Panda Annie says:

:-D he is sooo cute! i love him!!!!

  13. Christine (UK) says:

Amazing that at the same age Mei Sheng and the new cub are the same weight. He’s a proper little dumpling and has such a beautiful face. I never tire of watching him.

  14. jenny says:

He is awake now, and so active. He is sleepy during the 7th exam, look at his eyes, gradually closed.

  15. Ani says:

Oh this is baby is big big little baby. =)

    many teeth has a panda??

  16. Kathy Hacker says:

Our little guy is the most mellow baby I’ve ever seen – human or Panda. I was watching the other night to see Bai Yun wrestling with the little linebacker. They look like they’re having so much fun. I love it when Bai Yun covers him with bamboo. The video of him taking his first steps was fantastic.
Keep up the growing little guy. One more month and you’ll have a name – I hope it’s Gao Yun.

  17. Lorna says:

What a joy is must be for you who examine the cub!! He is sooooo darn cute and cuddly….Sitting up there on the exam table like a BIG boy. So glad you share his exams with us…..

  18. susan says:

Thanks so much for this update. I’ve been waiting for it all day and boy was it worth it. The little guy is absolutely adorable. It seems his cute meter keeps getting higher by the day. I am thinking that in acouple of weeks, it will totally be off the charts!

  19. Dennis & Lynn Carney (N.J) says:

What a charmer he is…Due to weather conditions in NJ today (SNOW!!!) only October 15th. ,I decided not to risk the dangerous drivers on the road due to all the accidents and played the video with “Bruisers” minor vocalizations for my Hospitalized wife and she agrees ” We love this lil’Bruiser and hope Lynn is able to travel when she is released from the Hospital after 7 monthes due to her Degenerative Bone Joint Disease and get out to see him and Mom & Dad and big Sisters and hope to be able to see Lin Lin before she goes away…We still wish that there was some way that Lin Lin and Tai Shan could both remain in the USA and become a new breeding couple to help the gene pool diversify….Oh well we can dream can’t we !!!

  20. Nancy from Vegas says:

    Well said by all!!!!

  21. kat w says:

    What a sweet fur ball..

  22. Fonsia says:

Looks like his ears are just starting to stick up. Just imagine how adorable he’ll be when those ears are up like radar!

  23. P Wong says:

    Conversation with Bai Yun #18

    Cubbie #5: Squeak (Mama.)
    Bai Yun: Yes, dear.
C: Squeak (Where were you a few minutes ago?)
B: Oh, the sun room, dear. So how was your seventh exam?
    C: Squeak (Seventh exam?)
    B: Yes, dear.
C: Squeak (You mean it wasn’t my sixth exam?)
B: Silly boy, you had your sixth exam last week.
    C: Squeak (Huh?)
B: I see you’ve been sleeping through your exams.
    C: Squeak (Huh?)
B: So what’s been making you so tired?
C: Squeak (Maybe flexing my limbs all night?)
    B: And what’s this?
    C: Squeak (Hee hee.)
    B: You’ve been vaulting?
    C: Squeak (Hehe.)
B: And what’s this keyboard doing here?
    C: Squeak (I was typing.)
    B: Huh?
C: Squeak (I’ve been submitting names to “Name the Panda”)
    B: WHAT?
C: Squeak (And since there were technical glitches last night, I stayed up late to send a direct email to Moderator.)

    Moderator’s note: Yep, message received!

  24. Joan says:

You just have to watch the videos on Youtube by DoxieMom (thanks for the heads up from #4 Bobbie Wood)!!

This is the reason Bai is trying to keep her boy stationary – she knows whats coming!!

I have a feeling our little boy is going to be another X-man – hang in there Bai!

  25. Fox says:

oh tiny most loved little pandababy, so freakin adorable, as always. that slowed rate of weight gain is probably due to all the motorin’ arond the den the lil’ dude is doing…he was sure flyin around in there earlier today! so tell us pandababy: sprinter? basketball player? novelist? what do you wanna be when you grow up tiny most loved…

  26. Sharon says:

He is so adorable :) I want to hug him :D

  27. Debi of MA says:

He is just the cutest and most mellow chubby cubby I can imagine! He must have had a good meal before the exam for that sleep, or a lot of practicing his crawling/walking! It amazes me that he isn’t frightened, at all, of humans handling him, and all the bright lights, especially now that he can see and hear all that is going on around him. Just another little adventure, no big deal! If only he knew how famous and beloved he is around the world! What a big handsome boy!

  28. Vikki says:

He is so much like his dad, mellow as a warm summer day!! I watched him this a.m. and he is really scooting about. He’ll be quite the pawful for Bai very soon.

  29. Deb says:

If I were the nannykeeper carrying Plumpers, I wouldn’t be eager to hand him back too quickly. At least, not until I got a few hugs and kisses in! He is just too adorable for words! He’s such a laid back little California dude!

  30. Pandafan#2 says:

Awwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s a cutie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I put in my suggestion. It’s Gao Yun…. so my fingers are crossed!

  31. Leslie in NorCal says:

I too love when he’s buried in bamboo. And when he’s spread eagle on his back just sleeping away….looks uncomfortable to me but he seems to be off in dream land. Just too cute. He’s quite an armful now…..he was once just a squirmy little thing.

  32. pandanuts says:

i watched the video, the cub sit like a little human, leaning against the vet. Gao Yun is so so cute.

  33. David Perry says:

At night, Bai Yun really does toss him around. I snapped a “postcard” one night when she had him balanced on her two hind legs while she was lying on her back! It looked like a circus act.

  34. Frances in NYC says:

Kathy #16–someone wrote in that Gao Yun wouldn’t be a name for a male cub (though it certainly was my favorite until then), so I guess we’ll have to keep submitting names and see the five that are chosen to vote on.

I was a little worried when Dr. Pye said he hadn’t gained a lot of weight this week, but when I look at the chart, I see he’s right on schedule. Maybe we should name him “Yibao” which means armful? I love the fact that he’s so mellow and sleepy during his exam–truly his father’s son, I think.

  35. Susan San Diego says:

Wondering if Baby Bai is gaining less fast now that his mom is leaving him alone so much. He doesn’t look like he’s complaining, but he is being left alone a lot!

  36. P Wong says:

    Conversation with Gao Gao #67

    Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
    Gao Gao: Hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: So I see you’re munching away again.
G: Yup. Gotta have my munchies.
T: Now do you know about the “Name the Panda” event?
G: Oh, yeah. I get email from Mei Sheng and Hua Mei.
T: So what did they suggest?
G: And I even got email from Cubbie #5.
T: You mean he was suggesting names for himself?
G: Yeah, and some were great choices.
    T: Huh?
G: Names that made me proud.
T: Oh, no. Don’t tell me he suggested Gao Juice.
G: Well, that was one of them.
    T: That figures.
G: But he also submitted ones to honor all of Pandadom.
    T: Really?
G: Hearkening back to great eons of Panda history.
    T: Huh?
G: Like the great Tian Shan Warriors.
    T: Tian Shan Warriors?
G: And the duels with Emei Sects.
T: Was there Wudang involvement, too?
G: Yup. And Walnut Plain lore.
T: Oh, you mean the old Wolong facilities.
G: And lovely Pitiaohe (Pitiao River).
T: So Madame Bai Yun’s been telling him bedtime stories, huh?
G: Yup. And he’s been reading kungfu epic comic books.
    T: What?
G: He likes rough and tumble fight choreographies.
    T: Well, he’s all boy, isn’t he?
    G: And novelty weaponry.
    T: Novelty weaponry?
    G: Like magic rolling furballs.
T: Of, course. The more ridiculous the better.
G: Well, actually he’s in good company.
T: Oh, that’s right. Can’t forget that Tai Shan rolling down the hill at DC National Zoo.

  37. Judy says:

This is way too long for a name but I think it suits him: “du bao si shui” means “content with a full belly” :)

  38. Lilarose says:

Such a darling little guy! I just love those eyes! He has a great life ahead of him, eating, sleeping, getting fat, eating, playing, sleeping, breeding occasionally, not paying child support….what more could this little studlet need or want?

  39. Peggy says:

He’s as heavy as his big brother. He was so cute when they sat him up though he seemed to dislike sitting that way. He is doing fine. It is fun to watch him working on the crawl. He was just getting into it today when mom showed up and pulled him up. She knocked him over in fact and went back outside but she wasn’t gone long. It was almost like she was deliberately working on making him balance himself and crawl. Then she came back with bamboo and it is always funny to watch her climb over him and then the bamboo was so big it covered him.

  40. Pat says:

Adoreable, simply adoreable. He gets more handsome and cute everyday.
Just love watching him discover new things, and trying to walk, LOL.
Thank you SDZ team for the video and update.

  41. Pam T. says:

What a sleepy little guy just love him.

  42. Kitty says:

Thanks for the video, he looks small on camera but he is actually such a big baby!

Saw him crawl very quickly today, I’m amazed that he is able to move so fast.

  43. amandap says:

I ADORE it at :55, when they sit him up and he sleepily sticks his tongue out. Sooo adorable!! And at the end…he looks like he’s enjoying a little panda cubby massage!

  44. Danielle, NY says:

Don’t miss the heart warming and tender video ”2009 10 14 BaiBy Love” posted on YouTube by DoxieMom19.

  45. Rebeca says:

My heart just wants to jump out of my chest with love for this cub!! He’s a star! He seems to know that he’s loved and cherished and the center of attention… thank you all at the SDZ for giving us this opportunity to watch him every day since he was born. Does anybody else want to kiss the screen when when he whimpers or when he sticks his tongue out?

Good night, beautiful, inspiring, miraculous wonder of nature, good night Bai Yun.

  46. Kat in HI says:

I got a kick seeing Bai Yun scoop up little cubbie like a football, roll over on her back and then set him down ever so gently. We’ll be visiting SDZ next month and although we won’t be able to see him I’m stoked!

  47. Marti, California says:

He is soooooooo cute, I could just eat him up. I look foward to his exams so I could hear his little noises and get close ups of his adorable face.

Thank you for taking good care of allof the Pandas.

  48. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

i think i need to blow ‘bubbles’ on his stomach.

  49. liz 'panda stalker' smith says:

oh yeah! does he have ‘puppy’ breath? that would just do me in. i’d seriously have to sneak a few kisses.

  50. shayna says:

Big Boy panda is so beautiful. He is growing fast. He is adorable. Thanks for the video. I think I want an 8″x10″ picture, he is just so beautiful.

  51. Frances in NYC says:

Danielle #44–thanks for the tip–that video is fantastic.

David #33–post that picture on Flickr or somewhere else so everyone can see. I saw her do that with Miss ZZ and thought it was so sweet. A few times I saw her somersault into the den, too, which I thought was spectacular. Bai Yun is one amazing panda.

A new exam video and two conversations from P Wong–our bamboo runneth over today!

  52. Melodie says:

He was just too cute today. He makes me laugh. Thanks for the great exam video!

  53. Myriam & David says:

I know you carefully choose what you post, but we would really like to know what is what Bai-Yun was doing to the cub today (Oct 15) at around 10:40 (panda cam time) The way she was holding the little cub really made me nervous, I am sure it has an explanation. We will really appreciate your answer so we wont be so worried next time it happens. (This is the 1st time we see her interact with the cub like this). Thank you for all your hard work, we really enjoyed the video for today’s exam.

Moderator’s note: Please trust that Bai Yun knows what she is doing.

  54. Susan (UK) says:

Dennis & Lynn #19, you WILL get to the SDZ to see the Pandas. If you want something enough, then somehow you’ll get it. Lynn, all the best for your recovery.

Little one is outgrowing his blanket! I love how all of you in the room with him manage to get that little tickle under the chin in, and stroke him (under the pretence of it being an exam, of course!!) Wish I could tickle his chin. I was watching him trying to crawl out of the den yesterday but he kept falling asleep. What a little darling he is.

  55. Susan (UK) says:

P Wong, another masterpiece. Magic rolling furballs??!! Sounds like my house on a bad cat day!

  56. Aunt Nancy says:

OMG, I LOVE him MORE & MORE, each day!! I missed at least a full day of Panda viewing so I wasn’t able to see all the cute things you all were talking about above. Luckily, I can still enjoy it on the time-lapse video. I still would have like to have had photos.

  57. Carol says:

Lastest exam video and photos are just so adorable. Question – If a person can look at these photos espeeially the one of baby sitting up and waving and not just melt with love can they still be considered a human being, or are they from another planet that is immune to adorable cuteness?

  58. Linda, Illinois says:

Turned my computer on this morning even before I had my coffee! Couldn’t wait to see the 7th exam. He is so cute! Would love to hold that little baby. Just want to tell all of you at the SDZ what a great job you are doing. You take such good care of all the pandas and seem to love your job. Thank you for sharing everything with us.

  59. Rhoda in IN says:

Oh my how adorable he is! When Dr. Pye sat him up – just wanted to squeeze him so cute!! Happy he’s healthy and on track! Good job Bai Yun and SDZ staff and everyone. thanks for the updates and especially for the video!!

  60. Phyllis says:

Oh My Goodness!!! I cannot believe how this little one gets more beautiful every day! And, what a temperament!! I swear his little eyes “talk”; even though he is a baby, he seems to know there is nothing to worry about from the strange “pandas in blue”. I was so worried after he got his shot that he would fear people, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Thank God.

I’m sorry to be repeating what others have already said, but he and his incredible mom are just too amazing for words. From what I have read about daddy Gao, “mini man” does seem to have inherited his mellowness. What an exceptional panda “man” he is going to be, inheriting traits from Bai and Gao. They are wonderful parents who have given us perfect babies. Bai Yun is an excellent teacher and I am looking forward to watching our baby grow.

    Joan & Danielle NY
Thank you very much for the suggested viewing. I just watched and the one of Bai and Baby touched my heart deeply. I wish I had seen the ones of Lun Lun and Xi Lan before yesterday. I wouldn’t have gotten so upset with the clip I saw of them yesterday morning when I mistakenly thought Yun was being aggressive. Although numerous experienced pandafans were kind enough to explain the difference to me, one picture is REALLY worth a thousand words. After today, I think Yun Yun should get a medal for patience. Boy, can that little X-man give her a run for her money!!! :-)

    David Perry,
Keep watching, the view you got of Bai balancing little “Muscle Man” on her hind legs while laying on her back, is the position she was in when she gave baby the wonderful “spinning ride” I mentioned earlier. I wish everyone could have caught what I saw, it was a gift to see the extreme pleasure our baby felt, as well as Bai’s satisfaction. It was truly beautiful, I will hold it in my heart always, to think of when I am down.

SDZ staff and Moderator–It’s been a few days since I said “thank you”; so I say it again to you now. You are taking wonderful care of our pandas and all the other animals. And you are doing a marvelous job of taking care of us pandafans as well.

Have a great day all! Lots and lots of hugs and kisses to Bai Yun and Baby; and throw a few in for Gao too!!!:-)

  61. Melissa says:

Thanks for the update and video! It was very adorable when Dr. Pye had the cub seated on the table and was inspecting the cub’s paws and tummy. I can’t get enough of his cute feet! The close-up of the cub’s sleepy eye was also cute, along with his soft vocalizations. One of the things that I love about giant pandas is that they never outgrow that particular vocalization, which can be a little strange (but endearing!) when you hear it coming from an adult male.

I think the “stolen heart” tally must be in the millions by now. Even the crustiest scrooge would be defenseless to the cub’s many and varied charms.

  62. Cindy/Tx says:

He is so adorable….he really makes our day! Watching him grow and seeing how Bai Yun takes care of him…is so sweet.
Thank you all for doing such a great job!

  63. Peggy says:

Is it possible that by mid November or so that Bai will bring him out or be ready to bring him out for the public to see. He is starting to crawl now and she seems to be encouraging him to move more. I know his Name Day is coming up next month too.

Moderator’s note: Based on past cubs, our little guy won’t be ready to meet his adoring public until December at the earliest. And please remember, it is all up to his mother and what she feels is best.

  64. Bobbie Wood says:

P Wong: Both conversations had me giggling this morning :)

  65. Christie in San Diego says:

His Royal Chubbiness is certainly developing a devoted worldwide fan base, isn’t he?! He does get more adorable on a daily basis. He’s showing more determination in his moving about, too. I’m looking forward to the time when he and Bai Yun can be seen by the public “in person,” so to speak. I check out the PandaCam every night at bedtime, leave it on all night, and check it again first thing in the morning — a great way to start the day! Thanks to all who care for the pandas and keep us so well informed on their progress. Thanks especially to P. Wong for the conversations! Very inventive and imaginative!

  66. Sukochi says:

I can’t imagine being able to hold a chubby Panda cub in your arms. I would just want to take them home with me every night. Or bring a sleeping bag and just stay with them. What a precious baby he is and what a wonderful mother he has. Can we hope for more cubs in her future? How old are Pandas when they quit reproducing?

The Panda Team responds: If Bai Yun shows normal behavioral and physiolgical signs of estrus in 2011, we will pair her with Gao Gao again. From our records of females in zoos, pandas over 18 are less likely to bear offspring. That said, Bai Yun has always shown exemplary reproductive behavior, so who knows what she has in store for us.

  67. Julie morgan says:

I am so jealous of the people working with him. They get to snuggle and pet him. Wished I could get to SDZ just to see all the pandas, but most of all little bruiser. Oh well, at least I can watch the video?

  68. Myrna, HI says:

Bai’s and Gao’s cub is so impressive. The family is so adorable. What is also impressive are the stats. It just blows one away the contribution the San Diego Zoo has in the Panda population. A total of eleven (11 – which includes the three pair of twins from Hua Mei). 24-7-365/366, the San Diego zookeepers, vets should be proud. Congratulations!!!

  69. Pandafan#2 says:

I have also put in Shui Xiong, “Napping Bear.” (He’s napping right now!) Are we going to get new pandas from China if Bai Yun doesn’t show any signs? Or are we going to get a boy and have Zhen be the panda mommy?

  70. Savanna says:

Will any photos from the baby’s 7th exam be uploaded into the Photo Gallery?

Moderator’s note: They’ve just been added. Enjoy!

  71. Mary from Brooklyn says:

David Perry — do you have that picture of Bai Yun with cubbie on her feet posted somewhere on the web. I would sure like to see it, since I missed it live. Cubbie is growing up so quickly. Am wondering if the incredible nest she build for him is helping him with getting those hind feet under himself. He really is precocious.

  72. Shirley says:

Dr. Pye said that the nutritionist would plot out Baby’s weight gain to see if it was ok. How did that turn out? I feel sad when I think of pandas surviving on low nutritional value bamboo. Does that translate to slightly low nutritional value in Bai’s milk? Probably not, but milk production would deplete her body, right? Baby seems so sleepy. He must be storing up energy for the big mobility practice.

Thank you, as always, for providing this wonderful connection to these fascinating animals. I wonder how to say “Good Will Ambassador” in Chinese? This baby panda, without knowing it, is causing such interest in saving his species.

  73. Cheryl says:

Awww… sleepy indeed! Thank you for sharing the exam video — never gets old seeing our beautiful babies! P. Wong — don’t keep us in suspense — what does Cubby want to be called? Great conversation with Bai, Cubby, Gao and tourist — thank you so much!

  74. Kathy from Ottawa Canada says:

He is the most adorable little panda; do you have any job openings, what a job you have, I would love coming to work every day probably would never leave, I would have to move in next door to them. Thank you so much for sharing him with the world. It brightens up my day! I don’t get cofee first thing now in the morning, I log in to SDZ then I get coffee and watch before I have to head off to work. What a joy it must be to cuddle him and scratch under his chin. You’re very lucky

  75. Carolyn Comings says:

And right now it looks for all the world like Bai Yun is doing zerberts on His Chubbiness’s belly… so cute!

  76. Susan (UK) says:

You know, I’m going to have to lock my husband up; after his abominably bad name choice of ‘happy barrel’ he has just come up with ’squeaking furball’. I have picked myself up off the floor and am now going to apologise to the little cubbie! It must be a miracle that our cats have reasonably normal names; but then again…

Bai and cubbie looking good. Cuddled together and Bai giving his little head a wash. Smooshy, as my daughter would say.

  77. tanda says:

    How old is Bai Yun?

Moderator’s note: See our Meet the Pandas page.

  78. kat w says:

The cam is being wasted!!!!!!!! Precious time, where are the furry ones??!

  79. Pandamama says:

What a cute baby! I want to hold him close in my arms and hug him! Just a note to Kathy (#14) — We must think alike…I picked the name Gao Yun too! Maybe they’ll like our name; we’ll have to wait and see. Many thanks to the awesome SDZ team for preserving these glorious animals! You all do a wonderful job!

  80. Sara says:

What can you say? Just awful cute!

And people wonder why drunks keep hopping the fence at the zoo in China to give the Pandas a hug!

    Sara

  81. Chari Mercier says:

Hi! I put some Chinese names on the Name the Panda page. Here is what I put in for consideration, and I hope that I put these combinations in correctly!
All of these names means WONDERFUL BOY:
Qi Nan Hai, Qi Nan Hai Zi, Qi Tong, Miao Nan Hai, Miao Nan Hai Zi, Miao Tong.
I used the Mandarin Book website to put these combinations together. I had to seperate the words wonderful and boy to get these combinations. Wonderful in Chinese were Qi and Miao; boy in Chinese was Nan Hai, Nan Hai Zi, Tong. So, I put these together to form the names that I have listed, and I hope that they will be considered. If I didn’t put them together correctly, please, someone let me know and list the correct combinations together for Wonderful Boy. P Wong, you are good at this, so I hope you can help me out on this one! These 6 names DID go thru on the Name that Panda submission page, and they really fit this cub’s wonderful personality!
I went back on the Name that Panda page to submit 2 more names that I definitely felt will fit this cub’s personality and strength beautifully. Unfortunately, I could not get thru with these names because I kept getting thrown back to the submission page after I typed in the capcha words in the box. I know I typed those words in that box correctly, but it kept throwing me back to the submission page everytime I typed those words in the box after writing in my names and explanations!
So, I will submit these 2 names here in my comments, and I hope that our very nice Moderator will put them in for me!
Jiao Tong means “handsome boy”. I got this name from the Mandarin Book website when I was looking for Chinese meanings for BOY. This cub is certainly a handsome boy!
Qiang Qiang means “strong, powerful”. This name was on the 2005 list of names from the National Zoo website back in 2005 for voting when Tai Shan was a cub. So, I decided to go ahead and submit this name for consideration since this cub has shown a lot of strength since the day he was born!
Checked the pandacams for SDZ, AZ, and NZ. At AZ and NZ, the pandas were all inside either napping or eating their boo. Xi Lan at AZ was on his favorite spot on the log structure just snoozing away. Didn’t see Lun Lun, tho. She was probably sitting somewhere else in the dayroom out of cam view either eating or sleeping. At NZ, Mei Xiang was eating her lunch, Tai Shan was on the rocks napping; both of them were inside. SDZ’s cam was fun to watch! Little man was napping by himself at one time on the cam, then the next time I got on there, Bai was in the den bringing in her boo and even stood up on her hind legs with the boo in her mouth looking as if she was showing off the best stalk of boo that she could find to everyone! Then, she sat down and started eating some of it, all of that with the little cub laying on his back righ by her and not being bothered at all. Just looked in a little bit ago, and the cub is back to napping in the den by himself again.
We here in Florida are FINALLY going to get that nice, beautiful cold weather down here–AT LAST!! Those 90 degree temps will be gone hopefully for a long time! We’re getting rain today, then that will clear out and a cold front will bring in that lovely cold air down this way! YEA!!!! I think you guys are in for some much warmer weather in the San Diago area, so have fun! I know that our pandas will find different ways to stay cool in their yards!
Well, gonna go for now. Will check back later on!

Moderator’s note: Sorry to hear you were having trouble with the name submissions. I’ve sent in Jiao Tong and Qiang Qiang for you.

  82. Chari Mercier says:

Hi again! I did watch the video of the cub’s 7th exam. That was really good and the cub was being a little bit more vocal but not as loud as when he got his first shot 2 weeks ago. He did look a little bit sleepy, too! He just kept dozing off whether he was on the exam table or being held by one of the vets! He must have had a big breakfast of milk before going to see the vet. He is getting bigger by the day, and I did read the comparisons of all 5 cubs. This little guy is keeping up with Mei Sheng’s weight when Sheng was about 72 days old or so. Compaing all 5 cubs on their weights and measurements, Cub #5 has been keeping up with the other 4 cubs with just slight differences in numbers. Bai has given us 5 very healthy kids so far!
BTW, ZooBorns website also has 3 of the SDZ exam vids of the cub on their front page! And a little off topic, ZooBorns also has the cutest pics of baby Pigmy Rabbits that were born earlier this month at a US zoo. They are sooooooo cute and fit in the palm of a person’s hand! I wuv rabbits!!
Well, gonna go. Will check back later on (did I say that the last time I wrote in??)

  83. TAMI MICHAUD says:

Notice how they are picking him up more slowly now and …slowlyyyy…..taking him back to the den…do you think it’s his mellowness??? Or that last chance snuggle and tickle???Either way the cub seems to enjoy it……………precious!!!!

  84. Pandafan#2 says:

When will the cubbie appear on the panda profiles? When he gets a name? Moderator or Panda Team- Is Shui Xiong a boy’s name? It means “Napping Bear”

  85. Laura from Il. says:

Maybe Mellow Fellow shoud be his name…he is so laid back, but such a cutie, as always. Looking forward to his name being picked.

  86. Sharon says:

Noticed cub had a bamboo branch across his face, looked as if someone was clearing bamboo out of the den, then the cameras switched, still no sign of cub.Is he ok?

  87. Brandy NY says:

A bit ago I saw Bai outside. A zoo keeper was also there and I didn’t see any barrier between then. Is this usual?

  88. Sharon says:

I see the cub is back on cam :D Was worried at bit.

  89. Nancy from Elburn says:

Bless that sweet little bear. I can’t get enough of him! Still working on a name……

  90. Lilarose says:

Don’t you think we can all learn how to live our own lives by watching and emulating Giant Pandas? I wish “mellow and laid back” were descriptive words in my own life. I wish I had a main diet of one food (easier to find, no grocery lists to write, can buy in bulk, no cooking or messy cleanup) and then extra treats when I am “good.” My weight wouldn’t be much of an issue nor would my color (and no baths). I would have something to say when it is important, I would get my exercise like an Olympic star–swimming, gymnastics, skiing, climbing. And I could sleep whenever and wherever it came upon me–and sleep and sleep. And I would be loved by almost everyone all over the world. Ahhh, to live like a Giant Panda…..

  91. Britney says:

Oh he is soooo cute! He is a big boy (with a big belly!!). Its funny when Bai Yun flips him over to cean him and his legs are flying all over the place and he’s opening his mouth:) I love him!! :)
    :D

  92. Cheryl says:

Susan # 76 — your husband sounds like a hoot! I’m still working on coming up with a good name — so if he has any more suggestions — send them my way… LOL

  93. Summer says:

Oh i just want to kiss baby boy!! I am in love!! :) :D

  94. maryellen says:

Chari Mercier, I am in St. Pete beach,fl. also…

I just love to get up in the am and get on this site to make sure all is well. What a doll. It’s not fair that I can’t have my very own Panda, oh well at least I can tune in 24/7. Eariler someone mentioned that the cub had a beauty mark, to me I thought it was on the camera lens because when Chuby Cubby would move the spot would stay there. Any one know? I’m wondering why we haven’t gotten our own Pandas yet. I hope china will soon let us have a breeding pair of our own. Can’t we just sneek some DNA?
    me

  95. HumanMom says:

Now that he is moving around more, Bai seems to give the camera a look of “please help me so I can have a minute to myself” just like the rest of us mothers dream of in a busy life with a newborn! He is so cute by getting more active by the minute.

  96. beth says:

I just can’t get enough of him either. She is just the most wonderful mom, too. I love the way she holds him. I could watch all day!

  97. Carol B--Oklahoma says:

We have been enjoying Panda Cam very much. We’re thoroughly enchanted with the little cub. Watching Bai Yun and cubby interact is positively mesmerizing. The emotions are actually palpable!!! What a WONDERFUL mother she is! Panda Cam is a marvelous educational tool. We have learned a great deal about pandas by simply watching each day.

  98. David Perry says:

    Mary from Brooklyn:

I don’t think I can post a link, so I put it on my Facebook page. Just search Facebook for “David Perry” in San Bernardino, and you should find it. It’s not the best picture, obviously, but you can see what’s going on. Hope you like it.

  99. Karen says:

I can’t believe how adorable Bai Yun and her little baby boy are. This is the first panda cam I’ve ever watched and it started when he was born. I have it running almost constantly.
I must get to the zoo as soon as we can see him!

Question: Does any one ever sneak a hug and a snuggle when you have him out? I mean how could one resist?
I would be bad for this job if I couldn’t give him a little love.

    You all are so great.

  100. Bobbie Wood says:

Chari #82: Thank you for mentioning another great website: Zooborns.com! I’d not heard of it; now when our beautiful pandas are napping, I can visit another site to check on many baby animals :)

  101. Sharon in Fort Worth says:

Chari Mercier #81 & #82 – I’m glad you like Qiang Qiang because I already submitted that one. I like the sound of the name (chee-ong chee-ong) and I think the meaning suits him (strong, powerful). Also like it because I don’t know of any other pandas by that name. Since it already passed the test with the Chinese back when Tai Shan was named, maybe it has a good chance of making it to the final list. I like Jiao Tong too.

I also love the ZooBorns website. There is just nothing cuter than a warm, fuzzy baby animal. Those pictures & videos really make my day. I hope some of the newbies here will check it out.

  102. Chari Mercier says:

Maryellen, glad to see that there’s another St. Pete, FL lady writing on this comment page! YEA!!! We need more Floridians and Texans on this comment page that really love pandas! Hope you enjoy all of our pandafan craziness on this page! We can get a little nutty at times when it comes to pandas, especially cubs!
Moderator, thanks for sending in my 2 panda names for submission (Jiao Tong and Qiang Qiang). I really do appreciate it a whole lot! Now all 8 of my chosen names will be considered for votes! Hopefully no one else will have the kind of problems with the Name the Panda page that I had today.
P Wong, read your 2 conversations! Hilarious and cute, as always! Keep them coming, ok? We all love them tremendously!
I got back on the SDZ cam about an hour or so ago, and saw ZZ laying down on that big stump taking her nap. Just checked the cam again a couple of minutes ago, and little cubbie is on his back being a very good little boy in the den while his mom is out eating her early dinner.
Well, gonna go and get some dinner myself. Will keep checking the pandacams off and on.

  103. Carolyn Comings says:

David, #98: I searched Facebook and could not find you…. Maybe you can’t post an actual hyperlink here, but what about the URL in plain text?

  104. Chari Mercier says:

Bobbie Wood, glad that you will be looking in on the ZooBorns website. That’s a fun website to get into, and they do keep up with all of the US panda cubs! Also, you can get into the Pandas Live On website to check out not only the US pandas, but all of the other pandas world wide. They have been keeping up with all of the panda births in China this year as well. Oh yeah, if you can’t get on the Pandas Live On website directly, go on Google and write it in on the search box, and Google will get it up on the search list. Then, click on that website to get in there that way. Have fun, girlfriend!
Sharon, Ft. Worth, glad that you liked my 2 name choices. I thought that they both fit this cub. I didn’t know that you also put in Qiang Qiang, too! Oh well, the more nominations, the better! And, yes, it did pass the test for the final NZ list in 2005! Hopefully, they’ll go for it and some of the other names on the nomination list! I’m kind of liking this to a few cities bidding for the Olympic Games every few years!
Gonna go and check the pandacam!

    what a cutie!!!! :-D ;-) :-) :-P :-B

  106. Chari Mercier says:

Back again for a pandacam alert!! Little chubby cubbie is FLAT on his back showing off everything just napping away! Great closeup, meerkats! This was at around 6:30pm EDT (3:30pm PDT). He’s just toooooo adorable and huggable, you all!!!!

  107. beth says:

Moderator, I am dying to know if it’s usual for pandas to sleep on their backs. Big boy seems to love being on is back and I don’t recall seeing many animals that do that. Thanks so much!

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.

  108. Mark says:

At the beginning of the 7th exam video, one of the vets used calipers and Mellow Fellow didn’t complain – he used to hate those things! Did he just resign himself to them, or have the vets learned how to use them more to his tastes, or something else?

  109. Mary from Brooklyn says:

David #98 – I also searched for you in vain. The URL would be a big help. Thanks.

  110. Lainie says:

#53 M & D. Please be assured, this is Bai’s 5th cub. And she does a splendid job, and very much knows what she is doing. As mentioned here before. She is one of the best mothers in the animal kingdom you will ever witness, in taking care of her cubs. =)

  111. David Perry says:

    OK, you’ll need to cut-and-paste.

    Thanks to the mods.

  112. Linda in Pittsburgh says:

I always wondered if Panda’s mainly eat bamboo, how do they get so chubby? Since they are meat eaters, does the zoo ever feed them meat?

Moderator’s note: A previous post, Food for Thought, may answer your questions.

  113. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#90 – Lilarose – you forgot to say -” oh to be a giant panda in a zoo “- don’t think pandas in the wild live the life of leisure – they are too busy trying to survive :(

  114. pandalektro says:

what a little cutie guy, love hin as much as the other kids frum Bai Yun

  115. Phyllis says:

    Good Morning All!

To everyone who has been trying to get a copy of David’s picture, I am the fan who was fortunate enough to witness Bai giving our little one his “twirly ride”. I took a postcard of it and sent it to myself. Same as David’s, it is not the best but I will happily share it with you. My problem is–I am a newbie to the pandacam and not really familiar with “facebook” or how to post links and such. If someone can give me directions, I’ll try. Otherwise, I will ask my daughter for help. Please be patient with me.

    David Perry
Thanks for sharing. Maybe you can tell me how to share my picture with everyone?

    Susan (UK)
I love the fact that you and your hubbie are sharing this beautiful experience. Unfortunately, although a good man, my hubbie gets a little jealous of the time I spend with our pandas. (Silly, but true!!)

    Char,
Thanks for the Zooborns link. I will definitely check it out.

Hey guys, I’ve finally learned how to split my computer screen to show two sites, so I can watch the pandacam and read these blogs. Bai Yun just covered mini man completely with boo. Is this what everyone has been talking about? I’ve seen him partially covered before, but never like this. I’m sure she has a good reason, but sometimes I really wish we could just ask her to explain. :-)

  116. Phyllis says:

    Dear Moderator,
I forgot one thing. It is obvious that our baby enjoyed his little “back rub” at his exam. If the SDZ wants to hire me to be his “personal masseuse/ure?” ; just let me know…I’ll start packing!! :-) Ha Ha

    Have a great day!

Moderator’s note: You’ll have to take a number, as I’d want to be first in line. ;-)

  117. Frances in NYC says:

David Perry #111–thanks for the link. Bai Yun is one multitalented panda mommy!

  118. Mary from Brooklyn says:

David Perry, thank you so much. What a lovely picture of Bai and son. Moderator, thanks so much for making this accessible.

  119. Britney says:

:-p Baby boy is so cute!! Oh he is so so cute!! …and cute as ever. I just want to kiss him up… and hug him so much. :-p

  120. Phyllis says:

    Fellow Pandaholics,

My daughter was nice enough to educate me as to how to post a picture. Like David said of his, my picture is also not the greatest, but it is another one of Bai balancing “mini man” on all four paws. I took this postcard on the day I caught her giving him a “twirly ride”. For those of you who are having difficulty getting David’s, maybe you can get this one.

    http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/6546/baibabytwirlyride.jpg

  121. Phyllis says:

What does everyone think of Tian Ran?

    It means easygoing, undisturbed, unhurried.

I keep thinking of his last exam when he seemed to take everything in stride as if he understood the “blue pandas” are there to help and love him.

  122. Phyllis says:

Someone mentioned that baby seems to have a “birthmark”. If I understood correctly, they’ve noticed a black mark on Bai and baby on their hind quarters. I noticed a little black spot on the munchkin’s tail today when he was napping on his back (soooo cute). Is this what they were talking about? Does Bai have the same spot?

  123. Pandafan#2 says:

When are the top 5 names going to show up?

Moderator’s note: The name submission process is open through October 19. It will probably take a few days to narrow down the choices and have those name selections approved by China.

  124. jessie says:

Just wonder how does the little panda cub’s poo cleanup? He doesn’t crawl yet, does the keeper take care of it? Does the pandas poo at a specific spot?

Moderator’s note: His mother takes care of it.

  125. Claudia says:

What do you mean, when the cub can be seen by the public, that its up to Bai Yun. Does she bring him to the outside area, like now she brings him to the sun room? So when he is old enough and walking, will you open the door, and maybe mom will bring him out?? and it will be a surprise for the people that are there that day??

Moderator’s note: The Panda Team will give Bai Yun and cub access to the outside exhibit when the cub is able to get around on his own. However, once the cub joins her out there, it might be several days/weeks before the team feels Bai Yun is comfortable having her cub in the exhibit and the cub is able to safely navigate the exhibit area. Once the Panda Team feels that all is well, the exhibit will open to small groups of employees to get the cub used to people. After that, he will make his public debut. As you can tell, it is a gradual process and not to be rushed. A previous post, One Step Forward, talks about the preparations for previous cub Zhen Zhen’s debut.
