These are great! It supplies the buried scientist in me. This cub will be a big one. Thank you very much for the information

  2. Tina in SC says:

It looks like we may still need to keep TUBBY Cubby in mind! Way to go MOMMY!!! And the baby for eating.. so much!!

  3. George says:

Glad to see he’s perfect! :)

  4. Debi of MA says:

He seems to be closest to Hua Mei! I have noticed he has been sleeping a lot, lately. Doesn’t that usually mean growth spurts? He is so adorable. I love it when he is sleeping and then stretches out his body and curls up again. I just squeal with delight. He looks like a lovely puff of black and white! Will there be video or pics of this last exam? I want to see his beautiful eyes again!

Moderator’s note: Please remember, these are the measurements from the exam taken last week. He’ll have his next exam sometime this week.

  5. Sandra says:

Thanks for the stats. You guys are the best at keeping us informed.

  6. kat w says:

Munchkin is growing up…walking now….where does the time fly?! From the looks of the data, baby boy is right up there with his big brother, same length, poundage…squeeze! squeeze! squeeze! love you, punkin.

  7. Kay Davies says:

Looks like Chubby Cubby is doing exactly what he should be doing, compared with his siblings, all of whom were similar at this stage. Good for Bai Yun, and very good for “our cub”!

  8. Lainie says:

I’ve heard a few rumors on here, that this is going to be Bai Yun’s last cub. Is this true ?

Panda Team’s response: If Bai Yun shows normal behavioral and physiological signs of estrus in 2011, we will pair her with Gao Gao again. From our records of females in zoos, pandas over 18 are less likely to bear offspring. That said, Bai Yun has always shown exemplary reproductive behavior, so who knows what she has in store for us.

  9. Shirley says:

It seems that all the little cub does now is sleep. Is that because he’s using all his energy for growth?

  10. Carolyn Comings says:

I think I saw The Chubster starting to try to crawl yesterday… around 11:30 a.m., when Mama Bear had left the den, his arms and legs were going, and he did actually move a few inches. Then Bai’s snout appeared in the doorway, followed by her paw–and she rolled him over onto his back and then left again, so there he was waving all four paws in the air, like a marooned june bug. I wondered if perhaps he was not allowed to crawl without her express prior permission…. It was actually quite entertaining. I hope it was captured on video somehow.

  11. Marti says:

I think you all do such a wonderful job of keeping us all informed. He is sooooooooo cute. I love
him to death. I don’t know how you could keep from kissing and huging him. I am now a Panda lover forever. Thank you

  12. Dee says:

I love the photo next to the live cam………..Bai Yun & baby.
I’m assuming it is a photo of Bai Yun, but which cub is in the photo sitting next to her? Zhen Zhen?

    Moderator’s note: Yes.

  13. Joy :) says:

Looks liek #5 is right on track to be a GIANT Panda. :)

Thanks for the comparision numbers, it’s always fun to remember way back when… I have a collection of pics of each of the cubs at various ages and stages all in one place. It is amazing BOTH how similar they are AND how different they are.

I think Bai Yun is going to have her paws full again with this one, which is a very good thing. He will thrive and grow to be one more magnificent adult panda. Thanks as always for letting us be part of the process.

    Joy :)

  14. Jayne O. says:

Carolyn #10 – yes, the cub’s ’steps’ were caught on video. Go to You Tube and search for “BaiBy Steps for Bai Yun and Cub” by DoxieMom.

Thank you so much for the comparison stats. It’s always fun to compare the size and milestones for Bai’s cubs and wonder what their future holds! SDZ, you continue to spoil us pandaholics with timely and informative posts!

Moderator’s note: Thanks for the heads-up on the YouTube video. I’ve added it to this post.

  15. Elisa in São Paulo, Brazil says:

The Chubby Little Guy is almost crawling.
I love watching every milestone :)
Thank you for the fantastic video.

  16. Pandafan#2 says:

I put in 4 names!!!!! (Can’t remember them…….) Bai Yun doesn’t seem to mind the mud. Is she going to keep the cub in tonight? We’ll find out!

Mr./Mrs. Moderator….. How do you become a moderator? I think I want to be one.

  17. Sharon says:

#14-Jayne,thanks for putting together the video of the baby and his steps. Also thanks to the moderator for posting it on the blog page.I noticed the baby sleeps quiet often, and I’ve seen other’s ask as well.Is it normal for the baby cub to sleep all day?

Moderator’s note: Growing pandas need lots of rest, especially after practicing “the crawl.”

  18. Marna says:

It’s interesting to see the comparisons. He weighs more than Mei Sheng did at the same age, but he’s longer and not so big around. He seems to grow bigger every time I look at him, and soon he will be leading Bai a merry chase.

  19. JC says:

Thanks for posting the video!! Is that adorable or what!! I’m pretty sure that he thinks he’s off to see the world and if it wouldn’t be for Mom thwarting his efforts, he’d be half-way across the country by now! Too funny! My guess is that the extra weight he has over his siblings at the same age is all muscle. He sure seems bound and determined to use those muscles!

  20. Steve from Seattle says:

Wow …. He is getting a great workout and I am sure that Bai is not in any hurry to see him get mobility as he will soon be all over her and a bundle to handle ….. Bai is the mother of the year, again, and the Panda staff are all All- Stars !!! Keep it coming ….

  21. Len says:

That panda is the most precious thing! I have watched him grow since he was a stick of butter! His mother is such a great loving mother! That guy who said we should let them die off should watch the cam, he knows nothing about how smart and loving they are! Thanks for the cam and the updates!

  22. Carole in San Diego says:

Thank you for adding the video — how adorable that he is working on his mobility. He wants to see and travel his world.

  23. Brandy N.Y says:

Wow the video is exactly what I saw and Ciji Dunne verified seeing the little man doing yesterday. Baby steps. I was hoping alot of you caught it too for it was a small milestone. When I saw this yesterday and Bai bringing in a large piece of bamboo and placing it at the den entrance I believed she was blocking it off ensuring he could not get out. Julie do you think that is what Bai was doing to keep him safe? I never saw her eat it and after the entrance was blocked she left. I wonder who put it on you tube? I am so happy they did so you all can see it for yourselves.

  24. LETICIA from LAS VEGAS says:

I wanna hold him so bad!!!

  25. Frances in NYC says:

Won’t be long before little dude is on his way. He seems to sleep so much more soundly than Zhen Zhen did. She kind of rolled and swam around in the den, but he seems to just plop down and pretty much stay there.

Such a beautiful picture of him and Bai napping together just now.

  26. CijiDunne says:

Look at that little bunky boy taking is first steps! Ist that cute or what? Oh my ……

  27. Laura from Il. says:

I LOVE watching this little guy…and Bai Yun is such a good mom. Must log on to your sight 5 times a day. Thanks so much for all the information on him. Excited to see what he’ll be named.

  28. Melodie says:

Thanks again for allowing us to peek in on the progress! Priceless!!

  29. LH says:

    He be motatin’!!

  30. Dennis & Lynn (N.J) says:

I agree that he is like his older Step-Brother and is soon to be a real crowd pleaser….My wife hopes that she gets out of the Hospital she has been in since December and is able to travel to SDZ to see him in person….Keep up the great work as you have cheered her up as I described the Bruiser’s attempts at mobility…Mom didn’t let ZZ Top get away with the antics of Lin Lin I guess Bai will have her hands (Paws) full with this little charmer….

  31. Michele says:

So adorable. I love this little guy so much! Thanks for keeping us so updated. Pandacam is now an obsession.

  32. TAMI MICHAUD says:

    O.K. I am going completely nuts…I wrote a ? But I don’t see it????

Can anyone help me? Where can I go to find Chinese names and meanings???????????

    Thanks….Tami

Little Baby Huey is completely exhausted from is Mommie after his exam…he may sleep and sleep….so precious…….

Moderator’s note: Tami, your previous comment is on the 6th Exam: Muscle Man post, #118.

  33. Pat says:

Awwwwwwwwwwww, thank you for the video from the panda cam showing chubs attempting to crawl.

Question: Why does Bai Yun come in and knock him over everytime he attempts to crawl????? Poor guy. LOL.

  34. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

OMG – Thanks Doxiemom for posting that video – his “Royal Plumpness” actually moved forward :) :) This is the first cub I’ve watched that moved forward at such a young age :) Usually they spend hours moving around in a circle before giving up & falling asleep right back where they started :) And Bai is right there to make sure he doesn’t “escape” :) :) The fun begins.

  35. Catbelly says:

Thanks so much for the stats and video! I love how Bai is keeping him in check, or is she practicing her mommy monster moves! He’ll be motoring along soon!

  36. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#33 – Pat – Bai knows that once this cub becomes mobile her days of any peace are over :) The longer she can keep him in the den the more time she has to get herself ready for a “pawful” of trouble (& if you watched other cubs you know what they get into) & if you are a new cam watcher the cubs antics will have your heart in your mouth many times :) :)

  37. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

    #32 – Tami – Use this link: www(dot)mandarintools(dot)com(slash)worddict(dot)html
Write your word and then use “as English” and the result will be your word and synonymous in Chinese and Pinyin translations.

  38. Lid says:

aww he is trying sooo hard! to darn cute…

  39. JJ says:

I’ve had the time of my life watching from his birth to today. He’s just the cutest thing. I love how Mama comes in and walks over him and turns him on his back. Love it. Thank you for keeping us all up to date in words and pictures.

  40. Rebeca says:

“Qin” means “royal” and “Pang” means “plump” according to the Chinese dictionary…. I wonder how you put those two words together to form “Royal Plumpiness” in Chinese… I’d love to suggest that name, but I have no Chinese friends! Help me out!
Thank you for that adorable video and all the wonderful information.

#31 Michele: Yes! This Panda cam is an obsession! All my friends accuse me of getting them hooked.

  41. Grace says:

Thanks for posting the video! I was a little puzzled at first when I saw Bai Yun taking him back into the den when the cub was right about to go beyond the boundary of the den. Then I saw Bai Yun rolled the cub over to his side after the cub attempted to move beyond the den. I think Bai Yun is still a little protective of the cub at this stage, and is not allowing him to overstep his bounds. Of course we can’t get inside the head of Bai Yun, but I wonder when Bai Yun, or any mother, decides when to keep the cub within the safe boundaries of the den. Further, at which stage do the mothers “allow” the cubs to move outside of the den?

  42. Linda A. / NorCal says:

I am blown away by the video. Thank you. (It’s been a tough day in Sacramento — we’ve had almost 3 inches of rain with gusts over 40 miles per hour — Sacramento is not built for that kind of weather!) So the video really cheered me up. I can’t believe he is trying to walk. I’ve watched Lin Bing (Ping) since birth, and it seems little Chubby is moving better and quicker than her. I’d like to just think he’s advanced!!!

Thank you again. And thanks, all pandaholics, for all the great posts.

  43. Candy in Victor, IA says:

OMG! That video is so priceless! Our boy is going to be shooting off like a rocket! Bai will have to literally pin him down!

I’m betting he will be a bigger handful than his cousin Tai Shan was!

I would not get too upset about this being Bai’s last cub. I’m betting she is not done. She has WAY to much fun with her offspring and seems so young at heart yet.

I can not wait to pick out his name!

  44. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

Dear Moderator -I found one of Pamela G’s wonderful poems from when Lani was born. Hope you can print it again for all to read :) It can be Bai & her latest cub :) I know sometime ago Pamela wrote briefly she was not well but her panda poems continue on. Thanks – Maureen :)

    Lun Lun’s Lullabye

Hush, tiny Panda cub. Don’t you cry,
Mama’s going to sing you a Panda lullabye.

Here in my arms you’re as safe as you can be,
So sleep my little baby, and listen now to me:

Once upon a time in a land far, far away
I lay in my own mother’s arms, and I heard her say,

    ” You are a Panda, and this is who we are;
We walked the misty mountains, those both near and far.

” We followed the bamboo and drank from clear cold streams,
And we still do, but now only in our dreams.

” So smell the scent of Panda Home with every breath you take.
Remember it, and pass it on for every Panda’s sake.

” Soon you will leave me and have children of your own,
But wherever you go, child, remember Panda Home!”

So here we are, my baby, and now I’m giving you
The scent of misty mountains, the smell of wild bamboo.

The taste of free, clean water that comes leaping down a stream,
Taste it all in my warm milk and dream the Panda Dream.

For someday, tiny baby, because of you and me
And other Pandas like us, all Pandas will be free.

They will walk the hills of China, and remember as they roam
That you, and I, and others, gave them back their Panda Home.

Now drink, and sleep, and listen, my tiny Panda child,
And dream of misty mountains and of living free and wild.

  45. Roxanne says:

Oh my God how adorable!!!!!!!!! If I were a keeper it would be very hard for me not to cuddle and kiss that little dolly!!!!

  46. Rose N. says:

Jayne O. #14 – Thanks for sharing the video of our precious little dynamo. There will be no stopping him now. :-) He is one precocious little panda cub. Of Bai’s five cubs, I believe he’s the first panda cub to start “stepping” this early. Mommy Bai put a little crimp in his first try at independence by picking him up and placing him in the den. Our sweetie was celebrating Columbus Day by doing a little exploring on his own. :-) What a cutie!

Many thanks for posting the 6th exam stats. It’s interesting and enjoyable comparing Bai’s previous cubs with this little guy.

  47. Panda Annie says:

cute name for the video! :-D

  48. Bruce In KC says:

It looks like this one is going to grow up to be a Sooperpanna, like his cousin Tai Shan :-)

  49. Pandafan#2 says:

How long does Bai usually have him sleep for? He seems to be sleeping for most of the day? Did the panda girls and boys like the rain? I saw the polar bears and they were all muddy!

Moderator’s note: The polar bears were muddy by their choice: after their swim in the pool, they rolled in the dirt in their exhibit. Alas, dry San Diego hasn’t had but a brief drizzle of rain in the last few days.

  50. Mandi Maling says:

this is so good keep it up Bai yun!!!!

  51. Jodi C says:

Baby Brut is flexing his muscles and getting them strong. Great to his him moving. But yes I agree Mom keeps knocking him over or back when he is trying to move.

  52. Dawn says:

This is a great video. He is such a happy cub. Bai is such a terrific Mom. Thanks for the update!

  53. Marna says:

#30 I am not sure what step-brother you are talking about. Mei Sheng is his full brother with the same parents.

  54. Anne says:

    Love the panda cam!

Just wondering what are the temps like at night? Just saw Bai Yun return to the den with the cub about 10-15 minutes until midnight your time and set the cub down- she then laid down and started pulling bamboo on top of herself. Then she started moving lots of bamboo from one side of the den to the other, covering the cub in the process who was about mid den by the exit, then she moved to the fresh side and settled down with the cub… Is it time for new bedding in their den? I watch often and have never seen Bai Yun act like that… Just curious! We love the pandas!

Moderator’s note: It was about 60 degrees at the Zoo last night. Whether or not that had anything to do with Bai’s behavior is anyone’s guess!

  55. Grandma says:

Is the only thing the panda’s eat is bamboo?
Thanks for all the news on new cub

Moderator’s note: Giant pandas in the wild have also been known to eat grasses, bulbs, fruits, some insects, and even rodents and carrion. At the San Diego Zoo, pandas are offered bamboo, carrots, yams, and special leaf-eater biscuits made of grain and packed with all the vitamins and minerals pandas need.

  56. Phyllis says:

    Good morning panda family!

    14 Jayne O & Moderator
Thanks Jayne for making us aware of the video of our baby “walking”; and Moderator, as usual, thanks for being incredibly efficient and posting it for us all to see. I missed it when it happened and was totally bummed, now I can watch it over and over :-) !

    19 JC
Thanks for being a proud “aunt” or “uncle” and bragging about our baby’s “muscles”. I thought the exact same thing, he just “looks” so strong for such a little guy!! God Bless Him and his wonderful Mommy! Sometimes I hesitate to say what I’m thinking for fear of sounding too mushey, thanks for saying it for me!!:-)

    33 Pat
I am no authority by any means and I felt so frustrated for our little guy when Mommy Bai toppled him over thwarting his efforts to escape that I wanted to console him. But I’m trying to remember that I’m a human and not a panda; so I’m trusting that his real Mommy knows EXACTLY what she is doing. After all, look at how many beautiful pandas she has contributed to this crazy world so far!! Of course, our little munchkin #5 is the best of them all!! (Sorry guys, I’m prejudiced. He’s the first cub I’ve ever had the privilege of watching grow.) Hope I’ve helped you to feel better Pat, it is nice to know that there are so many people out there that love the little guy as much as I do. :-)

I pray that his popularity goes a long way in the fight to prevent our amazing pandas from becoming extinct. I just know in my heart he is going to grow into an incredible panda “man” who will father many, many babies. And maybe he will be a famous “ambassador” who will show the world just how much we need pandas!!

  57. Phyllis says:

    Moderator,

When you “adopt” a panda cub, adult, or family; do you get to specify which one? Thanks.

Moderator’s note: No, but you get the warm, fuzzy feeling of knowing that your favorite panda does, indeed, benefit from your adoption of the whole panda clan!

  58. Phyllis says:

    O.K. “Mushey Moment”

I just watched Mommy Bai give her little boy a WONDERFUL ride!! She laid on her back and spun the little munchkin using all four paws! He LOVED it!! :-)

When she stopped, he wanted more (like any growing boy). He attempted to start her up again by beating her face with all four of his little paws! Hee Hee

I guess “Mommy knows best” and she felt he’d twirled enough, so she hugged him until he stopped kicking his little legs, and then kissed (licked) him on his head.

HOW can ANYONE question the intelligence or emotions of this beautiful animal?????

  59. Lisa in Maine says:

I got on panda cam this morning like I always do and found Bai and cubby asleep in the den. Well, Bai was trying to sleep, cubby was kicking her in the chin. I guess she figures if he’s kicking me in the chin I know he isn’t crawling somewhere. I don’t know if cubby is asleep or not, if he is he must be dreaming of crawling or his nervous system is working overtime, because he is really kicking up a storm. It just warms my heart and as I had to scrape ice off my windshield this morning before I could drive to work I really needed warming. Thanks again to all the people in San Diego who make this possible. We really need it.

Do we have any surprises in store for the pandas for Halloween? Sorry Moderator, I had to ask and aren’t I a devil for even starting the conversation :)

  60. Joy in Kansas says:

On the last blog I suggested Wu Wu (5th 5th) … woo woo! But I have an even better idea … Wu Hu
Hu can mean a hundred things in pinyin, and one of the meanings is celestial blessing. Wu Hu could mean 5th celestial blessing, which this cub certainly is!!! and who among us could resist being able to call him “woo hoo!” LOL

  61. Vie-Omaha, NE says:

Thanks for showing us Bai Yun when she leaves the nest, she takes long breaks now, pretty soon baby will go with her. He’s sure growing!

  62. carly says:

#44 Maureen: Thank you for reprinting one of Pamela G’s poem, it is absolutely beautiful. She is such a talented lady and her words evoke such wonderful images and emotions in all of us.

  63. Bobbie Wood says:

    Joy #57: Priceless :)
Maureen # 44: Thanks for finding and sharing Pamela’s poem!

  64. Frances in NYC says:

Phyllis #55–you’re so lucky to have caught that moment–I saw Bai spin Miss ZZ like that and thought it was the most amazingly wonderful thing. Unfortunately, time-lapse missed it, so we’ll all have to keep watching to see it again (like any of us would stop!).

    Joy #57–Wu Hu!!!! Perfect!

And there’s baby girl, Miss Zhen Zhen–always good to see her, too!

  65. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#57 – Joy in Kansas- love your name :) woo hoo

  66. TAMI MICHAUD says:

Where can I go to find Chinese names and meanings???
    Thanks, thanks, thanks

Moderator’s note: Go to the blog Panda, Panda, Bo-banda and scroll through the comments. You’ll find a couple of Web site suggestions in comments #24-28.

  67. TAMI MICHAUD says:

The name I came up with is Tai Gao Yun. Not a clue what it translates to

  68. Ruth from Austria says:

Thank you for the wonderful video and the stats. It seems as if our little pumpkin is not as big as it seems, i. e. only being the third largest baby according to his length and size of his girth. However, he looks much
bigger and rounder. I know I have been repeating myself over and over. But he is sooooo cute!!! I am trying to find a suitable name for him on the “mandarintools-website”. However, whatever name I come up with in English there does not seem to be a translation in Pinyin. HELP please, other pandaholics!!!
#44 Maureen, thanks for reviving Pam’s beautiful poem. When reading it it brought tears to my eyes. Thank you and Pam for sharing the poem with all of us.

  69. Frances in NYC says:

Phyllis #57–I was told that if you call, you can specify which panda you would like to adopt, but you can’t do it online.

  70. Sharon says:

Was able to catch Bai Yun and baby upclose at 11:04am SDZ time.Bai was looking up at the cam and holding baby.Took a postcard of it..Made my day as always to see Bai Yun(who is a wonderful) mom and baby cuddling. It was as if Bai was posing for the camera. :D

  71. Lee in Vancouver says:

Great action right now on the cam. Bai and the little tyke are lying down at the entrance to the den and she has one arm out as a “gate”. The little guy is trying his hardest to get over the arm. He is getting up on his back legs but then going face first into her arm. So cute.

  72. Deb says:

OH MY GOSH! I don’t know who’s watching right now, but he’s such a little wiggle worm!!! I believe he can probably crawl small distances now. He keeps trying to crawl out of his mom’s arms, and she keeps having to grab him and pull him back! It won’t be long before he’s on the move!

To the keepers, will he go outside when he’s ready (I see he sleeps in the doorway a good bit); or will mom discourage that until she goes with him? Surely he’s smelled the outside air, felt the sun and wind, and heard the birds and rustling already just from his proximity to the door – so it shouldn’t be frightening for him…….

  73. Marlene says:

I have a question about the polar cam – not sure where else to ask….Are the bears separated or are the siblings just keeping away and watching Chinook because she looks like a brown bear?????

Moderator’s note: We’ll be posting a new polar bear blog in the next few days that should answer this question. Stay tuned!

  74. Candy C. in Des Moines says:

Pamela’s poems always make me cry; the video of chubby cubby trying to crawl wore me out. I need a nap!!!

  75. Mollie says:

This might be a no-brainer, but Bai Yun gives her chubby cubby a bath, doesn’t she? I just had the privilege of watching her really clean him up! (on 10/14/09) And now she’s resting from the exertion! Chubby Cubby, however, is ready to crawl out of the den!

How often does Bai Yun bathe her cub? Once a day? Twice? Does she also lick him to stimulate his bowels?

    Thanks,
    Mollie

  76. Frances in NYC says:

Look at little dude trying to sneak past mom at the door of the den. Sorry, little one–mom’s onto your tricks. Sleep…grow…big world waiting.

  77. Debi of MA says:

    ROFL

“Momma, I am trying to learn to crawl. Stop knocking me over everytime I get going!”

“You are growing too fast and I want to take a nap. Here, this large piece of boo will keep you inside the den while I rest. Sorry, sweety, but Momma makes the calls, here.”

“Awww, Momma. Everyone was watching me and cheering me on!”

“Go to sleep, dear. You have a lifetime of admirers coming. For now, it is naptime.”

    “Awww, Momma. That isn’t…isn’t…fair….snore….snore….snore….”

  78. AC in NYC says:

Thank you for the stats, it’s interesting to know that Mr. Chubby is slightly bigger than his siblings. Love the video too.
I just saw mommy and the baby are playing and cuddling. They displayed the most amazing loving picture that soothes heart and mind. Playfulness and silliness of their kind can always bring a big smile on my face as well. I can’t believe that guy as naturalist can be so heartless to call for an extinction of these amazing animals.

  79. Janan Huntsberry says:

Is something going wrong with the cameras? I can’t get the cam…. 11:45am… Janan

Moderator’s note: The cam is working. If there is a lot of traffic, it can take longer to come up, however. Keep trying!

  80. Phyllis says:

Thanks for the info on adoption. I’m happy you got to see Bai Yun give a ride to Zhen Zhen even if you missed it this time. I do feel incredibly lucky to have caught such a special moment shared between Mommy and Munchkin. I am in awe of what an exceptional mother Bai Yun is. We are truly blessed to have her here with us in the States.

    Maureen–
I don’t know who Pamela is but she is extremely talented. Thank you so much for sharing her poem with us, it goes straight to the heart.

    Moderator -
Thanks for the info on adoption. Unfortunately, as much as I would love to adopt the whole “panda clan”, I cannot afford the $250 needed to do so since I am disabled and cannot work. That’s why I was asking if I could specify which one I wanted to adopt because I am partial to Bai Yun and our little “Muscle Man” since I’m a new pandaholic. Thanks for all your hard work to you and all at SDZ.

Moderator’s note: You can adopt a panda for as little as $35. What I had meant to convey is that the $35 dollars benefits ALL of our pandas, not just one particular one. My apologies for the confusion!

I was watching little Lin Ping-Bing over in Thailand last night. She loves to sleep in a concrete basin. However, last night, she was sound asleep in the basin, with her head stuck between the bars! I was having a fit! She looked like a little forlorn black and white collie cause her fur was being pulled back by the bars, and it made her snout very pointed. How the heck do you contact a zoo in Thailand to tell them to get her head out of the bars? Finally, somebody walked over and gently pushed her head thru and she sleepily re-positioned herself into a little round ball in the basin. One thing I do like, is reading their descriptions of their exams. They can’t really be sure of her length and girth, because she is so “naughty”, cause she moves all over the place trying to get away from being held. Keep being a little “naughty” un-stuffed panda Lin Ping-Bing! You cute little thing!

  82. Aunt Nancy says:

It almost looks like there’s an incline there. Maybe not, he just makes it look hard. Bai could have helped him w/a little nudge forward. He finally takes a few steps forward, then 10 steps back, thanks mom! She just stopped all of his efforts right in his tracks! It’s obvious she’s not ready for him to be mobile. Bai is not new at this, she knows that once he’s in motion, all those days of relaxing are over! However, there’s still recovery time after expending so much energy, and he’ll need his sleep if he’s to grow up big & strong like his daddy.

OMG! Right now they look so ADORABLE!! (11:55 on the panda cam) They’re both laying at the door of the den, just looking out, but oh sooo cute! It looks like his little ears are starting to stick up. I love him! I keep watching his 6th exam over & over because it’s too cute, and I’m willing to BET money that whoever it is that’s picking him up and taking him back to the den, when they duck back in that hallway, they’re TOTALLY sneaking a kiss on that cuddly ‘ol bear, I don’t care what they say, there is NO WAY you couldn’t. I refuse to believe otherwise, no way, no how, I’d bet my life on it! Of course, we’ll never get a confession because that could mean losing a job/career. But…. if it were mine, I would take that chance. If I had just one-second alone w/that guy, I couldn’t resist one little squeeze w/my cheek next to his, and a kiss on that little head. Hmmm, doesn’t that sound good?

#44 Maureen, Thanks for posting Lun Lun’s Lullabye. It’s a beautiful poem, I’ve never read it before.

#60 Joy, I love, love, love the name Wu Hu, Celestial Being. As long as it doesn’t sound like the way we say it (woo-hoo), I think it has a great chance of making the list. Because isn’t that one of the criteria’s for weeding out names?

#55 Grandma – if you read the Zoo Atlanta panda updates, you will see that their pandas are also fed banana & as a special treat sugar cane. And Tai Shan at National Zoo in D.C. had beets as part of his last birthday cake. That’s how his face got pink spots all over it. Pears are another fruit given to pandas in D.C.

  85. Pandafan#2 says:

Wow, it hasn’t rained? It’s pouring buckets where I live! I saw the cub today, and he is sleeping. (Of course.) What are those things that look like carrots? (Carrots? Some kind of vegetable? Treats?) I thought I saw Zhen Zhen eating one….

How are you connecting to Thailand’s Zoo? I’ve been trying but I’m always unsuccessful. Also, can you connect with the China Zoo, and if so, please tell me how?

    Thanks

  90. Danielle, NY says:

#81 Widget, I saw that too and I was surprised that nobody came to push her back in. They sometimes do that even when Lin Hui is next to Lin Ping. I was just hoping that Lin Hui would not come along and decided to drag Lin Ping towards the back since she doesn’t seem to like Lin Ping to be so close to the front. She could have hurt Lin Ping with her head stuck between the bars. I have the impression they have keepers around the clock as you can often see someone coming by to push her back in, but they may have other duties away from the pandas. I am surprised they haven’t come up with a solution to prevent Lin Ping to put her head between those bars. I suspect Lin Ping will be a hand/paw full for her keepers and her mom, she always seems to want to be somewhere else than where she is. She runs right back to the front when her mom drag her to the back, she tries to get out of the baby bed where she is “on display”. And as they wrote, she is “naughty” as she doesn’t stay still long enough for them to take her measurements. But I think she is really funny…

  91. Danielle, NY says:

Don’t miss today’s entry on the AZ website; they explain what play-fight is all about and how a real fight is and sounds different.

  92. Danielle, NY says:

    # 98 Phyllis, the easiest way to get to the pandacam at the Thailand’s Zoo is through the “Pandas Live On” website. In the column on the right you will find “Watch Lin Hui & cub Live”, click on that and you will get to the pandacam through Google with an english translation. But there are times when it is really hard to get on it. As for the chinese centers, Wolong Base: www(dot)pandaclub(dot)net(slash)index_e(dot)jsp and Chengdu Base: www(dot)panda(dot)org(dot)cn(slash)english

#56 – Phyllis – as the fifth cub of Bai & the 4th from natural mating between Bai & Gao our latest “Royal Highness” will certainly become an ambassador for the Giant Panda world. Bai & Gao may have set the record for natural mating in a captive envirnoment
#75 – Mollie – All cubs need to be bathed & stimulated to eliminate several times a day – that said I think Bai seems to enjoy her idea of bathing (mauling) this cub more. Right now she’s in charge but I think she also know she’s going to be busy & have her “paws” full with this mover :)
#77 – Debi of MA – you got that right – momma Bai is still in charge :) for how long ?? :)

  99. Frances in NYC says:

Phyllis #89–those two sites only work if you use Internet Explorer, so if you’re using a Mac you’re out of luck.

Aunt Nancy #82–this is only the beginning of watching Bai seemingly impeding cubmuffin’s progress. What she’s actually doing is teaching him to be persistent. You’ll see her keeping him from walking, knocking him off of perches, wrestling with him when he wants to feed–all of these things teach him to try try try again.

Maybe, since he’s the longest (tallest) of the cubs, we should call him Gao Ming (like Yao Ming)? (it means smart, clever, wise, brilliant.)

How much can a panda lover do :( Yesterday there was a desperate email from Pandas International – because of calls for help from the Chinese for a new generator & several other necessary items for their baby pandas Pandas International cash supply has been depleted – the call is out for help for $$ for baby formula – but I am “panda donated” out – donated to the SDZ for their new bamboo cooler, ZA for an ice cooler, ZA to “help save the pandas” & pandas international to plant bamboo – much as I love our pandas & cannot begin to think of them becoming extinct my hubby lost his job & we cannot afford any more $$ to help the pandas.

#89Phyllis..I origingally went to Panda’s Live On, and when I got to the cam, I put a shortcut on my computer screen. It says Panda Live and I just click on it and it takes me right to the cam. I also have a shortcut to Chengdu, which has 3 cams, but for at least the last 2 months, their camera’s have not been broadcasting anything.

  102. Chari Mercier says:

Hey, you all! Just to let you know that Pandas Live On has a great article on there about the pandas’ family trees at both SDZ and NZ with links to both of them as well as charts. NZ has the family tree chart for Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, SDZ has 2 family tree charts: one for Bai Yun and Gao Gao, the other for Hua Mei. Very interesting, too! Also, PLO has vids of the cubs vet exam nos. 1, 3, & 6. There’s a cute picture of Xi Lan of Atlanta Zoo on the PLO site. Great stuff from those people, and they do a great job keeping everybody informed about pandas around the world.
Finally got on the pandacam tonite, and saw little chub cub on his back wiggling his hind legs. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that PLO has a great vid of Bai and the cub, and the cub was trying to crawl his way out of the den, then Bai would go in and out pushing him over on his side! This little guy is trying to figure out what those 4 little legs and feet are supposed to do! Before long, he’ll be moving for sure!
Well, gonna go for now. Have had a couple of long days getting things done. I’ll get back on the pandacam tonite and tomorrow. Love the pandas!

Baby chubs is really sleeping alot today. Bai seems to be leaving him alone also. Is he feeling ok? I have him on in the background all day at work and check in on him, it is like an addiction. I have noticed that she does leave him for longer periods, but today seems unusual. We all worry about the little chub-muffin. I did see him trying to crawl a little bit today and then Bai stopped him and laid her head in front of him. They both fell asleep looking out the door at the sunshine. How cute! Hope he gets examined tomorrow and we can be sure he is doing ok. How can anyone not get attached???

Moderator’s note: If the Panda Team thought the cub was not well, they would immediately summon the vet. Please don’t worry–just enjoy!

to see them at night? Thanks…love those Pandas!!

Moderator’s note: They go to other rooms that cannot be seen by Zoo visitors. We don’t have anyone operating the Panda Cam at night to follow them around.

  108. dd says:

Widget #81–Lin Ping nearly always sticks her head through the bars when her favorite keeper is there or just after he leaves. She *LOVES* him! She has tried (don’t know if she’s ever succeeded) to wriggle through the bars to follow him for more scratchies or hand-holding. Yes, he holds her hand. A true May-December romance, LOL!

  109. Claudia says:

Tonight I am watching and chubby cubby is looking like he is having tummy pains, can you hear squeeks and such in the daytime? So maybe if he crys in his sleep Bai Yun can hear him also, if she is sleeping nearby? She is outside in other words. Sometimes when I watch mommy is alittle ruff with him, of course he has hair padding and cub padding, and I know she has had other babies. She turns him over upside down, and flops him side to side, and tips him over. Just that I have never seen it before, and I didn’t know you had a cam with the last babies. I am a new Panda lover, thanks for any info. Biggest question, do you touch grown up Pandas? or would they “bear claw” you?

Moderator’s note: Keepers and Bai Yun can hear the cub’s vocalizations. Keepers always have “protected contact,” meaning a safety fence between panda and keeper. Even though they look cute and cuddly, they are bears and have the potential to injure a human. Keepers do go in with the cubs up to a year and by then a yearling panda can be very rambunctious and those teeth and claws even in play mode could hurt a human. More info can be found in the post Some Questions Answered.

Hi sdz. you guys are doing a wonderful job with these panda bears. I can”t wait for the new name for the baby boy panda bear to be picked. He is so cute and getting big fast. He is going to be happy that he will have his own name pretty soon. How many times could you put in a name for it? Only one time or you put in how many times that you want? And how long will Bai Yun will be able to hold him in her arms or pick him up. Its amasing that she can do that . I didn”t know that she can do that. I just wonder if he is getting to big for her to pick him up. LOVE THOSE PRECIOUS PANDA BEARS LOVE LAURA

Moderator’s note: You don’t need to submit the same name more than once.

  111. Lizzie says:

I put in 3 boy names:

    Chang Ming — Forever Bright
Jun Jie — Handsome and Outstanding
    Bao Bao — Precious Treasure

I know there is another Bao Bao in the Berlin Zoo, and at 31, he’s the oldest Giant Panda outside of China. However, Bao Bao sounds like a combination of Bai Yun and Gao Gao, so I couldn’t resist!

…but Wu Hu is a hoot! Thanks, Joy (#60)! You made me smile….

  112. Margaret says:

I see that the little “man” is sleeping inside the doorway of the den at 2:30 AM. My guess is that the nights are cooler lately and therefore Bai Yun has been keeping him inside where it is snug and warm overnight. It won’t be too long before she takes him outside to enjoy the daytime temps. I remember her piling bamboo in the doorway for ZZ too, to block his exit and any predator’s entrance.

  113. Susan (UK) says:

4.04 SDZ time (midday here, having lunch!) and Bai is stretched out on her back, legs in the air and little one is lying across her neck. Bai looks so happy, even when she’s asleep. Haven’t posted much lately, but I’ve been watching and posting my votes for little one’s name. I thought earlier this morning, when I saw him alone in the den, how big he is now compared to the little fluffy ball he was just a few weeks ago. It’s also been nice to see Bai outside on her own, getting some ‘Me’ time.

  114. jenny says:

The roly poly guy is the biggest one. I am so moved by Bai Yun’s relationship with her baby. As somebody has said, she is a great mom that we human can learn a lot from her.

  115. Phyllis says:

    Dear Moderator,
I try to read all comments because I want to learn as much as I can about our beautiful pandas. Danielle in NY suggested reading an entry on the AZ website that explains play-fighting. I could not find what she was talking about. What I did find however, was a video of a very small cub (Xi Lan when he was younger?) climbing up on a log behind an adult bear and the adult bear reacted VERY aggressively. It looked like the cub was trying to steady itself and when it put its little paws on the adult’s neck, the adult threw its head back with such force, the baby got knocked down hard. When the baby picked itself up and came back trying to defend itself, the adult grabbed it by its little head and pulled it over their own head. The video ended with what looked like the adult holding down the cub with its paws and biting its little neck.

The whole thing upset me quite a bit, and I’m hoping that I’m wrong in how I am interpreting what I saw. PLEASE explain. Is this “play-fighting”, it looked real enough to break me to tears?

  116. Brandy NY says:

Earlier Bai was sitting in the den just watching Mr. Chubs who was on the floor. He turned himself around and took a few steps toward her. She went out and brought more Boo in the den. Aprox. 15 min. ago he was alone and took a few more steps.

  117. Jessie in NH says:

Moderator, I have a question for the Panda Team when the get the chance. I was just curious, do we know whose genetics determine the gender of the panda, the mother’s or the father’s? I know in humans it is the father’s chromosome that determines whether the baby is a boy or girl. Do we know with pandas? Thank you!

  118. Carolyn says:

I value the SDZ panda teams input very much, they are so informative and knowledgeable and understanding of all our questions and concerns. Maybe they can give their thoughts on this question. Fu Long in Vienna who is over two years old but has never been separated from his Mom will be going back to China at the end of this year. Will he have a much more difficult time to adjusting to being on his own especially since the first time will also be in unfamiliar surroundings.

  120. Maureen in Stanwood MI :) says:

#115 – Phyllis – Don’t worry – what you saw was momma Lun Lun dragging her cub from the branch – this is great play – cub climbs up tree branch, mom knocks him off and on they go. You’ll notice XiLan bounced right up & went back for more. Panda play is rough as Mom is teaching her cub how to survive in the wild.

  121. Frances in NYC says:

Phyllis #115–on the ZA pandacam page, below the cam image there is a section of text called “panda cub updates.” The top one (or the one labeled October 14 if they’ve added another one) talks about play-fighting and how to tell it from real fighting.

Lizzie #111–I love Bao Bao, too! And Wu Hu. This will be a tough choice…

The video that you saw is of Xi Lan and Lun Lun play fighting. They do this and much more “rough and tumble” play than that video shows. Xi Lan just keeps going back for more! He is all boy! :-)

I’m happy we agree about our little guy’s qualifications for Ambassador. You bring up a good point, I wonder if Gao and Bai did set a record? In regards to being “panda donated out”, it looks like you have donated quite a bit already so please give yourself a hug and don’t worry about giving more right now. Without getting into my personal problems, let it suffice to say that I am trying to figure out just how much I can donate to our beautiful pandas right now, and I can tell you that it will not be what is in my heart to give. Sometimes our wallets don’t match our hearts. God Bless You for everything you have already done and I hope your husband finds a new job soon. :-)

    Frances in NYC
You are very astute in your understanding of Mommy Bai trying to teach our little “Muscle Man” perseverance. Although it is just one more example of what a wonderful mother she is, I still feel frustrated for the little one sometimes. I think it may be a little easier on us humans, we can talk and explain to our young. I like your name suggestion of Gao Ming, it suits him. :-)

    Page
I hope they can post the “spinning” episode. It really was one of the cutest moments I’ve ever witnessed. You could honestly “feel” the baby’s joy and excitement, and I swear Bai Yun was filled with satisfaction at her cub’s pleasure.

  125. Danielle, NY says:

#115 Phyllis, Don’t worry about the play/fight between the panda mom and their cubs, the mothers will never hurt their cubs. I am pretty sure that the play/fight is part of their education, the females have to be able to keep the males in check and the males have to be ready to fight other males, especially during mating session. But I am also sure that play/fight is part of the entertainment for both mom and cubs, especially when a cub doesn’t have a twin as playing companion. It also seems that even older panda mothers keep their sense of fun and enjoy, most of the time, playing with their cubs.

#81 Widget and #108 dd, I managed to watch Lin Ping last night at 11PM EST, at first Lin Ping was in the small bed, undergoing check-up or being on display and she didn’t stand still for a second, she was trying to free herself from whoever was trying to hold her and tried to get out of the bed as well. Then they put Lin Ping in a small push-cart and she was trying to get out of that as well, so they put a towel over the cart. They brought her back to her enclosure and I noticed that they had put a barrier made of bamboo to prevent her from sticking her head through the bars. The problem now is that you can’t really see her when she sleeps in her concrete bowl near the bars. She is quite something!!

  128. Deb says:

Lun Lun has earned the nickname “The Mommy Monster” because she engages in such boisterous play bouts with her cubs. It looks like she’s being TOO rough sometimes, but Lani ,and now Xi, thrive under her care. All the panda mommies have different mothering styles. Bai has had so many cubs she seems to adjust her mothering style to the cub’s temperment. Mei Xiang, on the other hand, was a type A mommy from the get-go. She was very, very protective of Tai Shan to the point that she didn’t take him out of the den until he was 5 months old. When Tai first started trying to walk, I remember seeing Mei laying on her platform in her den watching Tai scoot around on the floor. When he got up on all fours and managed to take a step forward, Mei reached down with her paw and gently pushed him back down onto the floor. It was almost as if she was saying, “No, I’m not ready for you to walk yet.” When Tai started climbing, Mei was right behind him making sure he didn’t fall. I don’t think she REALLY started enjoying rough play bouts with him until he almost 8-9 months old.

Thank you VERY much for the explanation and the link. I guess I sounded like a foolish “newbie” but it just caught me so much by surprise, it really messed with me. Maybe it is like hearing something taken out of context, I only saw a little clip; and I didn’t know they were only playing. Again, thanks for educating me. I appreciate knowing that I should be prepared for more “rough housing”. I am going to read the article at Zoo Atlanta now. :-)

Did anyone else see it? No, I’m not dreaming (am I?).

  132. Rita Snyder says:

Poor little thing – I want to help him walk!! He is so cute and cuddly, just hate to see him struggle.

  133. Debi of MA says:

Scooter is quite mobile, today! Those little legs are getting stronger and he wants to run! Bai has her paws full! Sometimes all those feet work and other times only some of them do! But he is getting the hang of it, even if it does mean going around in circles! Any day now I expect him to fall right out of the den and say “Hi Momma!! Look what I did!”

  134. Houston says:

Our boy is doing another major bout of “locomoting” again (11:50am+ by the webcam). A stick of bamboo, propped against the wall, was a target, he has also made several moves toward the den entrance, and then back again. Every few minutes his back legs get out of alignment and he either plops back down on that chubby tummy or rolls over on his side. He is very close to being up on his feet today. It is very like a human baby : how they rock foward and back, trying to manage the balance and build up the strength to hold the legs properly aligned. Occasionally, he also seems almost to achieve the upright seated position. Oops, he just ran out of steam and it is Nap Time!

I too have seen Bai pull him over – almost like she isn’t ready for him to start being so independent. (Being an experienced Mom, do you think she knows it only gets to be harder work when junior can get around on his own?) It will be amazing if he isn’t walking early.

  135. Phyllis says:

Thanks for replying. Some other panda-fans also reassured me that “all was well”. It really does earn the name of “rough and tumble” play, doesn’t it?:-)

    Deb,
Thanks for explaining why Lun Lun is called “The Mommy Monster”. I’ve heard her called that before but I had no idea why. After seeing her “play fighting” with Xi Lan this morning, I understand perfectly!:-) I guess you have been watching the pandas for a while since you are able to share insights into the different styles of play they demonstrate. Thank you. I found it very interesting and look forward to seeing how Bai plays with her little man this time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the experienced panda-fans for taking the time to share their knowledge with those of us who have recently joined.

Bai got up and pulled her back in no worse for wear.

Lee #131 in Vancouver. If you were dreaming, than I was too! I actually got so excited, I shouted out “baby is actually walking”.! It is so amazing to watch his progress from day to day. Love him and love mom.

Oh my goodness. He is sooo cute! He is sleeping on his side, all tuckered out from crawling around, and has his face slightly up, so he is in a very similar position to the way Bai sleeps and you can see his smile! You can also see his adorable foot pads. I just want to kiss that fat belly and play with him all day long! :)

Linda #137 – Thank you for seeing it too. It’s hard to sleep at work, but you never know…

I just looked at pandacam for the last time today at work and noticed a dark spot showing up on baby panda’s rump ( just like Mom’s dark spot). It must be a beauty mark!!!!!!!!!

Just got done watching his 7th exam…OMGhe is SO CUTE, I just want to kiss that cute little face of his when he makes those little noises. I’d give anything to be in the shoes of your team.Haven’t caught him walking yet…every time I’m on, he’s sleeping, so looking forward to actually see him walking live on the cam!

#128 Deb…Thanks so much for your nice description of Mommy Mei. I didn’t get to see her being a mom and have relied on pictures and anecdotes. I think she is wonderful yet sometimes portrayed unfairly (aggressive, mean, a bully, etc., which I NEVER agree with! LOL). From your words, I can picture her tenderness and love for Tai, and how much effort she put into being a good mother. Wish I could have watched her interact with Tai Shan as he grew up. Thanks again!
