I am so grateful for all of the information that the staff is able to share with us. The keepers are doing a wonderful job with all of the elephants but especially with Tina and Jewel, who were in such need. Please give them my thanks.

Im alana, & im 15 years old & very interested in becoming a elephant trainer at the SD zoo. I visit at least once or twice every few weeks, and spend a lot of time by the cages watching the elephants. Im reading up on my behavior books and buying them as i find the cash.

im wondering how you decide which elephant people work with, or if its a group effort?

Moderator's note: It is a group effort, Alana.

First and foremost THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THE CARE FOR TINA & JEWEL... a few questions: When will Tina & Jewel join the other elephants? Is it true that you are trying to separate Tina & Jewel? Is Jewel going to be having surgery on her tooth? Is she in good enough condition? Does she need the surgery since she's been gaining weight, how much of a problem is the tooth? Who will the surgeon be? Because of her condition being elderly etc. Will you have additional vets on hand in case there's any issues. How confident are the vets that Jewel will handle this well. How long after the surgery can Jewel join Tina?
When can we see more video of the girls? Please know that I have two groups with over 1500 members and I am asking on behalf of all us who have adopted these ele's in our heart as our babies (not to mention Queenie that is still in need), and have been watching them, supporting their rescue and watching their progress. We are all grateful to the SD zoo for taking such wonderful care and look forward to watching the girls get out and finally have some quality life.
Thank you.

Elephant Team responds: Members of the San Diego Zoo's animal care staff are highly qualified individuals with a great deal of experience with elephants. We expect that we will be performing dental surgery on Jewel in the future as the animal care staff feel that she is ready for it.

Re comments 56, 57, and 58. I went to the WAP today and determined that Punga and his Mom were the two elephants I saw in the same spot for over 30 minutes. It seems that after the keepers leave in the evening, the elephants go to the other end of the field or some place there is a pile of hay and they will stand in the spot where the hay is until it is gone. Apparently Punga's Mom is more than content to stand in the same place as long as there is some hay to eat. When she finished the hay, she left. Simple as that. In all the months I have watched the elecam I had never seen this standing in one place for 30 minutes scenario.
