I Can See Clearly Now

Posted at 4:03 pm September 29, 2009 by Yadira Galindo

panda_exam5At eight weeks old, our not-so-little panda cub now has both eyes open. According to our veterinary resident, Amanda White, DVM, his eyesight isn’t acute enough to see us plainly, but during today’s checkup (the little guy’s fifth exam) I could see clearly that pandas rule.

When keeper Kathy Hawk walked in cradling the cub in his blue blankie, I couldn’t help but be all smiles. I’ve been at each of the previous four exams helping to document his progress for you to see and for our own work, of course! Each week he looks different – usually a little rounder – which makes me grin from ear to ear. The cub mesmerizes me, and, like today, I sometimes forget I should be writing down important data like his weight. He was a whopping 6.4 pounds (2.9 kilograms) today, which is an increase of less than one pound from last week, but it shows around his midsection, his face, his paws…really, it shows everywhere. He measured 19.68 inches (50 centimeters) long, but it’s his overall girth that seems to make him look gigantic compared to the previous veterinary exam. Maybe it’s all fur. Yeah, that’s what we’ll blame it on!

Today it was his eyes that kept catching my attention. Those sleepy, dark little eyes that looked at you but had a soft gaze. Amanda says he can see, as evidenced by his squinting at her light. Still, it will take a little more time for his eyesight to make out shapes and track movement. All I know is I couldn’t take my eyes off him, especially the two or three times he yawned, opening his mouth so wide I could almost see down his throat. No sign of teeth yet, just the pink gum line.

For the first couple of minutes he seemed sleepy, barely keeping those precious eyes open, and was yawning. He waved a little paw here and there as he was flipped around for a look at his underside or a paw. Halfway through the exam he seemed to have a lot more to say and began to grunt and make a few soft objections. The Panda Team tried to comfort him by massaging his back (they were really trying to feel his backbone, but he’s so robust, it’s almost like he doesn’t have one!). This usually relaxes him but not this day. He kept on protesting. Taking a cue from him, the team speeded up their exam. I looked up at a monitor to see what mom, Bai Yun, was doing, and she kept glancing at the den door. She was obviously hearing his little complaints but I think the bamboo was extra fresh and she kept eating, that is until the little guy felt the prick of his first vaccination and let out a big yelp.

I don’t know about everyone else in the room, but I held my breath and immediately looked over to see that Bai Yun had made her way to the den door, wanting to get in and check on the cub. It was the first of a series of vaccines and he’s quite fine. But when a panda says, “I’m done,” well, the exam is immediately concluded so that Bai Yun could comfort her little fellow. Clearly it’s the pandas that run these checkups. We’re just along for the ride.

Woo Hoo Baby’s eyes are open and he is more and more adorable. Poor thing did not like his shot, probally scared him.

  2. Lee in Vancouver says:

You out did yourselves this time. Blog, video and pictures all at the same time. Thank you.

One wierd question though. Since he is growing so quickly, does he get stretch marks on his skin? I have always wondered this but honestly was too embarassed to ask.

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.

  3. Lainie says:

You guys have the best job on the planet. Wish I had thought of this years ago.
It could have been me writing this blog. =) Thanx ever so much for the latest exam news. Cant wait to see the video !

  4. Carol (the other one) says:

Oh, he really did not like getting his vaccination!! I hope Bai wasn’t too stressed by his loud objections. He is just the cutest thing ever! And huge. Did I forget to say HUGE? He looks more like 10 or 12 pounds to me when he’s with the panda staff. Then seeing him, as someone said in the other thread, in luge position with Bai this morning, he looks much smaller. Thanks for the great pics and video and for everyone’s dedication to keeping us posted on it all!

  5. Deb says:

Is the word “robust” a kinder way of saying that Plumpers is downright FAT? But in a GOOD way!

  6. Lainie says:

Okay just saw the exam. That was hilarious, when he made a noise, or protested, his entire little body jerked forward a little. Still bummed I didnt think of this as a career move years ago. =)

  7. Catbelly says:

I can’t stand it! How many times did I saw awwww while reading the update and watching the video. What an adorable little dude this cubbie is and what a testament his growth is to the fine care he is being given by Bai and his keepers. Yadira, you outdid yourself girl – I feel like I was there!

  8. susan says:

Thanks so much Yadira for this latest update of the cub’s checkup. I really apprecially all the little details and description of the exam and the cubs ever so cute reactions. The Little guy is absolutely adorable especially when he was letting out a yawn.

  9. Nancy from Vegas says:

I am just in total awe!!!!!

  10. Marti in OR says:

What a great video of the little adora-bear!! He is heart-meltingly cute. Lookout female cubs out there, this is a little Romeo with fur!
Poor SDZ staff, I totally understand and forgive your forgetting the previous Howdy gate encounters. Ready to move on to further worshipping this little cubmuffin…;-)

  11. AC in NYC says:

I just jump right to the video, and Mr baby has to be the cutest thing on earth !!! Now I can read this, then watch the video again.

  12. Fox says:

Pandababy just keeps getting cuter and cuter. Watching him take that shot was a bit saddening, but obviously its for his benefit. Still, that vocalization did not imply massive enjoyment…

oh well, HE IS SO CUTE!

  13. Pat says:

Only one word today……………”AWWWWWW”……………….(Is that a word?, LOL)

Okay, okay, maybe a few more, LOL. He just gets more adoreable with each passing day.
Thank you again for all the updates, pics, and videos SDZ staff……..
You make my day when I get home.

  14. kathy, canada says:

Just when you think he can’t possibly capture your heart anymore, he makes you fall in love with him all over again. I think we all felt that shot and honestly that’s pretty much my reaction to a needle to this day so hes not alone there! I wondered if today was the day for his first shot because when you guys switched back to the den this morning Bai was already there comforting him so I figured either he had his needle or he saw for the first time that you weren’t his mama.

Great video and photos, thank you – I know we say it all the time but we do appreciate the detail that you provide us, makes us feel like we are right there with you!

  15. AwtemNymf says:

He is such a beautiful Panda! He’s even more adorable with his eyes open! I saw the video 3 times and am smitten every time!
Thanks for keeping us up to date! You guys Rock!

  16. cindy in KC says:

Do ANY BABIES like shots?? I think not– :( He is so cute he just makes me wanna
squeeze him!! Does he like sleeping upside down too?? :)

  17. Fonsia says:

Oh my. Just wait till next week when his eyes will be big and round and melting in that round, cuddly body.

The adore-o-meter will be off the scales.

I’m kinda glad to see him show some spirit though! A panda could be too mellow! Right now with his eyes sort of half-closed, he looks like a zonked-out surfer just gazing on the world.

    Duuuuuuude!

  18. cindy in KC says:

this video is precious precious precious!!! He is getting very vocal and knows how to use it!

  19. Cheryl says:

Ohhh — poor peanut — he sounded like one of my dog’s squeak toys. Just wanted to give him a “bear hug” — he is just so adorable. Bet mama Bai made him feel better.

  20. Debi of MA says:

Oh my gosh, he is just sooooo cute! lol I thought I saw his eyes two days ago and I had guessed he was 6.3, not 6.4. Not bad for a cam only watcher! He is amazing and poor little tike getting his vaccines now. Growing up so fast! Do vaccines make them run fevers and be sleepy, at all, like when my cats got them? Just curious if he will be watched extra tonight and the next 24-48 hours to be sure he has no reactions. He must have been saying “Ouch, that calls for lots of milk and napping on boo!”

  21. Sheila says:

Woo Hoo, He can see his Mom now not just feel vibrations around how cute =). They should name him
Guin Guin (Chinese meaning Strong and Round) at least on his check ups they do use the word Strong
alot. They also use ZZ for short, his could be GG :=)

  22. Diana S. says:

Omigosh thank you so much for your delightful post. To hear from those of you who are actually at these exams is so enlightening. The picture you painted today was wonderful. The sleepy little fellow, then his complaints and the rush job, and Mama waiting to comfort him as you hurried! Loved it all. What a beautiful chubby boy!

  23. Nancy from Texas says:

Thank you for the update. He is such a cutey.

  24. M says:

I want to say thanks to Yadira Galindo for the fantastic explanation of the baby panda cub exam today. It made me feel like I was right there while the staff was examing him! :)

  25. Ann in Florida says:

Poor little boy, he sure screamed when he got his shot. I can relate….I used to scream, too. I hope they gave him a ‘boo” lollipop. What a wonderful thing to watch. I was grinning from ear to ear! Yadira, your comments made me feel like I was in the room. I also jerked when the baby got his shot and wondered how upset Bai was at that minute! What a great Mommy, hurrying over to the den door to check on her boy and find out why he screamed.

  26. Susan H. , N. CA says:

It’s so magical when the lil fella is growing up so fast already! I can’t wait to see him in person! He is just too cute!

Wondering how does he compare to Mei Sheng as far as being fussy or be laid back????

  27. Carol from Kalamazoo says:

Lainie #3 & #6: Ditto times 10. I’ve been kicking myself for years for not thinking about a career with animals. Thank you Yadira and the rest of the SDZ staff for the wonderful and informative blogs. This is the first cub I’ve watched from birth, and I’m hooked. I can’t wait for the 3 upcoming elephant births and possible polar bear cubs. How exciting it will be to watch all of these adorable babies grow and learn.

  28. Karen of Phoenix, AZ says:

This big boy just keeps on growing and growing and growing. Pretty soon he will be running around and playing and eating bamboo. Well not that fast. That is good news that both his eyes are open. He is sure to bigger than dad Gao Gao.

Thanks again for all the updates.

  29. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

How many ways can we say he is so cute, so adorable. so plump (er… robust not fat). The video says it all –
thanks so much Yadira Galindo for sharing your experience with us.
We are so fortunate to have the panda cams & this blog where so many of feel we are panda experts – but it great fun & we have all learned a lot…..thanks :) :);)

  30. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

Also want to say thanks for the “cub milestone” info on the main page. Fascinating to compare Bai’s cubs through various stages & then one wonders why there is such a difference in something she does :) Research must be never ending – thanks :) :)

  31. Lorna says:

Oh, what a cute thing to see. This chubby little “dude” feels like he is all ours. Watching him grow to be such a beautiful lovable panda cub is really fun!! Thanks to all of you who share this with us.

  32. Regina says:

I have to say I’ve been watching since day one and he definately puts a smile on my face everyday. My daughter laughs at me but I don’t care I’m a sucker for baby animals and after seeing him get his first shot today he looked as if he was having a terrible (2) moment (no,no,no). I truly appreciate and feel blessed to have an opportunity to experience the precious moments you provide for us. I missed out on the others so this is definately making up for past years. Keep up the good job to all of you and God Bless :-)

  33. TAMI MICHAUD says:

  34. RHONDA IN TENNESSEE says:

He is soooo cute!!!! I love that little fat bear!

  35. Tiny says:

LOL, our little Panda Prince was so indignant when he got that shot!! Gosh, did anyone else hear Momma Bai trying to take the door off the hinges to help the baby? And Dr. Meg, you are so baaad, goosing that little fat furry belly until he squealed :) HeHeHe! Can there be anything else as precious as a Baby Panda yawn I wonder?

    Thanks for sharing!

  36. Ann in Florida says:

Fox #12…”did not imply massive enjoyment.” That was TOO funny. Yeah, I think we can all agree that little fuzzy butt (I still LOVE that name, and think we need to get the Chinese translation!) was NOT amused. Ouch! That shot was WAY worse than the calipers!

  37. Vikki says:

He is so cute, I don’t know how you all keep from kissing his little face! I know this is not allowed, but I couldn’t resist. I would probably be the first panda keeper fired for kissing the cub (so worth it!).

I always give thanks to all of you wonderful panda keepers for the amazing experiences you provide all of us panda fans. Your work is appreciated by millions around the world. Thank you so much for all you have given us and continue to provide!

  38. Joellen Megan says:

Dear Zoo Keepers, Vets, Bai Yun, Gao Gao, Zhen Zhen, Su Lin, and everyone, he gets cutier by the minute! How lucky we are! thank you all! You are doing a wonderful job, Sincerely, joellen megan

  39. Melissa says:

This is a wonderful update and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I like knowing that even the SDZ professionals are completely enamored of Mr. Chub and in awe of being a part of conserving giant pandas. Thanks!

That picture is just awesome! He is such a little big dude (or is it big little dude?) at 6.4 pounds of perfect panda pudge. He is a whopper!

I’m still wondering when his pink nose and lips will turn to black.

  40. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

I have mentioned that hubby is now a cubbie pandaholic – so today as he’s hogging the computer I hear him muttering “where’s the cub”… the mutter turns into a “hey, hon, where is the cub??? :) I tried to explain that there are now 5 pandas that the zoo is trying to keep track of – & if he watched the cam he would see some amazing antics – ahhhh, he calmed down & pretty soon I heard laughs & “wow, look at that” “who is that” & I had to go in & show him how to tell what panda cam he was watching :) :)
So now between the two of us we try to see all the fun :)

  41. Jodi C says:

Baby boy is so cute. That is great his eyes are open. Are his ears open…can he hear yet? Bai can hear clearly as per her response to the baby yelping. Thanks for the great care you provide to the pandas.

  42. Rebeca says:

He’s so big and cuddly and adorable and plump and edible!!!! I just want to hug him and kiss him nonstop…. lol… it’s funny because every time I see one of these videos my Pomeranian and my 4 cats get smothered with kisses because I just have the urge to hug something furry! They love it, though :)
Thank you all for bringing this to our lives… I just can’t believe I started watching years ago!! But better late than never… I have gotten many people hooked on Pandas and that’s a good thing.

Good night, Your Plumpness, I hope to meet you n person soon. Nite nite, Bai! Nite nite, all!

  43. Angie says:

Thanks for the truly enjoyable update. I’ve noticed that the SDZ panda staff has been busy blogging these past few days and I really appreciate it! Love your entries, keep ‘em coming!

  44. Linda A. / NorCal says:

Thank you for everything! Video, pics, and updates on our totally CUTE chublet cubby.

  45. Sharon from Columbia MD says:

It truly is a wonderful capture for those precious moments. Thank you SDZ and staff for the write-up, the vedio, and pictures. I can watch it over and over again.

  46. joan said says:

can his royal plumpness get any more adorable? how i would lo ve to hold him.
my stuffed panda will have to do.
    hugs from joan.
    painted post, n.y.

  47. Bernice says:

Awww!! Poor baby didn’t like his shot at all. :( What a cutie-patootie though…I can completely understand why you’re mesmerized by the cub Yadira!! Thanks so much for the vivid update…please give the little guy an extra cuddle for me!!

  48. Maddy says:

OK…I’m sitting here with a BIG grin on my face watching the video of the latest exam! I don’t see how anyone cannot appreciate the awesomeness and importance of and in that one little package of issue from Mr. Gao and Mdme. Bai for the future of the pandaworld…..in so many ways, this “robust” [Love it! Is that like "husky"? :=)] little guy is so much of everything for the future of pandas. And all due reverence to the parents…non? Master X and his Mommy Monster Lun in Atlanta are no slouches either!!
And you SDZ angels……..yes, you do have the most bestest job in the world working with all of those wonderful living creatures, and I and all the panda fans on this blog from around the world…thank you all for your caring, patience, hard work, kindness and love that you give to your job. Truly, thanx.

  49. Rose N. says:

Thank you Yadira for the latest vital information on our sweet cubbie. Now that both eyes are open there will be no stopping him. :-) I don’t blame our sweetie for putting up a bit of a squawk when he got his first vaccine. Many thanks for the latest video and photos.

  50. Angela Jarnagin says:

Just wondering, how does Mom react when the cub is taken away, and then when he is brought back into the den? Do the handlers have to be concerned at all with her reactions? Do they actually enter into the same area as where Mom is waiting?
    Thanks for the wonderful updates!

Moderator’s note: The post Preparing for the First Exam explains the process.

  51. Reenie in Atlanta says:

How far away from Bai’s digs is the exam room? Must be pretty close if she can hear his little yelps.

Moderator’s note: She’s on the other side of the wall.

  52. Frances in NYC says:

Cubmuffin is still Mr. Mellow, even with that little squawk when he got his shot–remember Miss ZZ was much more dramatic, letting out quite a few ear-piercing shrieks. And now that he can see and his lovely eyes can be seen–ah, more panda watchers’ hearts and minds will be captured!

  53. ags says:

Fantastic blog! I love Roly Poly! I am sorry he had a hard day, but no one really likes getting a shot!
Amazing to even see his size compared to his 3rd exam.
    Grow Roly, Grow!!!

  54. Steve Burton, Seattle says:

Great description of the event…. good for Bai to be concerned as she is the perfect mom, once again the Mother of the Year, 2009. Great job Panda Crew …..

  55. Panda Team says:

    #2 Lee in Vancouver
He may have stretch marks, but if he does, they are hidden under his fur.

  56. kat Wilson says:

Okay, from work computer to home computer, my kats are MAD!!! Especially since their dinner is a low priority now….

I love how the whole SDZ staff just seemed so giddy at this exam! Almost makes them as human as us out here on the other side of the cams and videos, especially you, Yadira! Having you share the event does make me feel like I was there, I think you really summed up how we all would feel being in the examining room too! Hearing baby vocalize is sooooooo scrumptious! How much cuter can he get?! How much cuteness can we take, it’s torture, in a good way. =-)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  57. Deana says:

I am totally awe struck with this little fella he is so adorable and look at those eyes…..absolutely beautiful!!!!!!! I keep watching the video over and over because I can’t get enough of him but I did feel sorry for him when he got his shot and he let out a yelp. What a great job that Bai is doing and of course let’s not forget all the staff either. Wish I were in the exam room when he gets his check ups. Thank you for keeping us posted.

  58. LH says:

Thank you as always for your fascinating and daily vids, exam reports, cams, photos and updates.

What is the tool that the DVM is using in each exam? It looks like a plumber’s wrench with a “jaw” – is it electronic calipers? A toenail clipper? Please advise!

Moderator’s note: A caliper is used to measure the cub’s legs.

  59. Deana says:

I have been wondering that when Bai comes into the den after being outside, why does she wake up sleeping baby when he is resting so peacefully sometimes? Is it because she is checking to make sure he is okay? Or is she wanting the baby to be awake with her while they are in the den? Just curious.

  60. Grace says:

I love that the cub is still mellow compared to others I have seen. I recall that Cousin Tai Shan let out a loud yelp, or a bear roar, rather, when he got this first vaccination. This little cub knows how to handle pain, if you ask me! I think he got it all from the good genes of Bai Yun and Gao Bao!

  61. Susan (UK) says:

He is the most gorgeous, chubby, beautifully sweet, wonderfully behaved baby Panda. I really need to squish him!

  62. LETICIA from LAS VEGAS says:

WOW!! he is really getting so big…I just wanna kiss and hug him tight I can’t stand it……………

  63. Anna says:

I love SDZ and all the giant pandas. I am in awe with the interaction of the giant pandas and their keepers. They are absolutely wonderful. Little cubbie is marvelous, but Su Lin has beat all the cubs in just about all areas. She is the prize. She is a wonderful child of Bai Yun and Gao Gao. Cubbie 5 just seems to get bigger every minute. He is just adorable. ZZ beat him on eyes opening, but he is so big.

  64. Aunt Nancy says:

    Can he get any cuter?!?

Yadira, thank you for an excellent description of your experience. It felt so personal to many of us. I loved that we were able to read your post, view the pics, and then watch the video all at the same time. I immediately wished I could have seen Bai’s reaction when she heard the sound of her baby in distress, what she did when she didn’t find him in the den, her response to his return to their “nest”, and would have loved to watch her love and comfort him as she does so well.

I’m sure you were documenting all this info at the time, by any chance was there a camera on to capturing all this? If so, will you be sharing with us? Thank you all for your hard work and dedication and putting up w/all of us!

  65. Jan Cecchi says:

Thank you so much Sab Diego Zoo. I am following your “chubby cubbie” with great interest. We get 2 pandas at Adelaide Zoo (South Australia) in about 74 Days – so counting down the days. Keep up the fabulous work to al SDZ staff.

  66. Sandra says:

Fantastic post and video. I just love that little chubbie cubbie. He is adorable. Now that he is starting to see a whole new world is about to open up for him.

Thanks everyone at SDZ! You are the best at keeping us up to date. And for allowing all of us pandaholics to voice our opinions on this blog.

  67. Cindy/Tx says:

I am so glad for the webcam and for the updates you all provide us. He is such a cutie. This is my first little panda to follow from birth and I too, wish I had chosen a profession that would allow me to care for animals. I think it’s a great experience that the SD zoo/staff allow those of us who can’t be there to witness and follow all the events that are taking place as little “Chubbie” grows. Thanks, again!

  68. Rhoda in IN says:

thank you so much for the update and video. He is so darned cute!!! I do have a question – it seemed that his nose was very wet – is this normal or is he getting a cold?

  69. Elisa in São Paulo, Brazil says:

Our roly-poly guy looks cuter, smarter and…. much more bigger as well! :)
I’ve been watching the panda cam since Mei Sheng was a tiny baby.
I remember each one’s development: Mei Sheng, Su Ling, Tai Shan ( he was bigger than Su), Mei Lan, Z Zhen and Xi Lan… so many!
Is the our cub’s growth above average and gaining weight faster than others cubs, as Tai Shan at the same age was?

  70. Linda A. / NorCA says:

Cubbie was in our local newspaper here in Sacramento this morning; a big picture with the caption “I can see clearly now.” He made the inside page of the front section! What a star.

  71. LETICIA from LAS VEGAS says:

Does the staff kiss the baby panda every time he gets an exam?

  72. Lee in Vancouver says:

Thank you Panda Team (#55) for your answer. My daughter grew so quickly that she had (and still has) quite a few. I just can’t get over how fast the cubs grow. I’ve followed them all and I never get “panda overload”.

Has the new cooler made life easier for the staff and pandas in keeping it fresher longer?

Panda Team responds: Absolutely! Hands down! The new cooler keeps the bamboo fresher longer, it holds so much more, we can keep it organized by species, we have easier access to it, there’s room to sort it, and we can move around inside it to pick and choose our bamboo bundles for the day. We love it!! Thanks to all who contributed to its purchase and installation.

  73. Hayden says:

I to am awestruck and can’t get enough – cubbie is absolutely adorable. I agree with Sheila, GG as a name would be great! Many thanks to all of your for sharing this miracle with us.

  74. Meegan Bryan says:

I thank he is a very brave baby panda. I would love to hug him. He is big and rolly polly too.

  75. Darlene in Chilliwack, BC says:

Oh geesh, what an awesome blog and to add the photo’s and video… You sure do know how to keep us panda nuts happy and content…..

I have watched the video I’m sure a dozen times and I cringe when cubby gets poked, but yes it is for his own good…. What a sweet sweet little boy…

THANKYOU to all who keep this marvelous species at the top of their priority list!!!!!

  76. tanda says:

Watching this cub and mother on video cam makes them appear so gentle and tender, is it true panda’s can be very aggressive and dangerous?

Moderator’s note: A previous post, Some Questions Answered, addresses this.

  77. patricia says:

yadira, thanks for your delightful report.

  78. Sue Martz says:

Just when you think he can’t get any cuter, he opens his eyes. Thanks for all the updates and video’s, it makes my day. I think it’s awesome that you let the cub and mom dictate the exams.

  79. maryellen says:

I found your site just the week that chubby was born. Wow, it is addicting. Thank you for all you do and I sure wish I had thought about a job like yours about 20 years or so ago! I’ll see you all again later today and thanks for keeping us so well informed!

  80. Joanne Fridley, MN says:

Mydaughter is a volunteer at the San Diego zoo and I get so much relaxation by watching the baby panda, Do we have a name for him yet? I visited the Zoo on August 6th, 2009, day after he was born, and I have been watching the cam every day since. He is such a joy to watch grow, I can’t wait to see him in person when I come to visit my daughter. It is just so relaxing for me. Thank you so much for sharing all this with the world.

    Moderator’s note: No name yet.

  81. Heather says:

Like all the other exams, this one too, was precious. He’s growing by leaps and bounds, but as others here post, he looks so little in the den. It gives you a good idea of how large Bai really is too. Great video all. You can tell what love and affection the keepers and staff have for Mr. Cubbie also. It shows on your faces. God Bless all of you for your love and dedication to your job.

I had a question for the keepers or vets…what is contained in the first vaccination shot? Distemper, Rabies, etc? Are animals as sensitive to vaccine shots, as toddlers and babies of the human species? Do we know? My vet always told me that my dogs would be a little sensitive and sore on their shoulders for a day or so, after their shots. I’m glad that the rabies vaccine doesn’t have to be given in the muscle anymore. Certainly less painful.

When does little “pudge boy,” get his next series of shots? Mr. Cubbie was very upset over his shot. He protested several moments after it was all over with. Maybe it had a little burning and stinging to it. Mr. Chubbie boy, all we humans know exactly how you feel. Hope you feel back to your old self soon; dare I say, “little fella?”

Thank you again for this great update and great video. I can’t help but watch them over and over again. The loudest I have ever heard the cub, was the day that he was born. Wow, was he loud. Wish we had sound to go with our web cam experiences, so we too, can hear all the sounds the Panda’s make during the day. I’m not complaining…I am very grateful to be able to look into the private world of the Panda’s. Something none of us would ever see, had it not been for all the cams set up at the “best zoo in the U.S.” The San Diego Zoo. You all are incredible people.

Moderator’s note: The cub received his first canine distemper shot.

If you were a panda keeper, be a bit patient, you would get the chance to kiss the chubby cubbie and wouldn’t be fired. Go to youtube search for “Tai Shan and Brian on July 2, 2006” to see how Brian , the keeper of National Zoo, did it.

  83. Sukochi says:

You are all so truly blessed to be working with, and handling this precious gift from God. I can’t imagine how it must feel to get up close and personal with a sweet little bitty, well not so much any more, Panda cub. You must pinch yourselves constantly and, as we do, dream of Pandas every nite. Pat yourselves on the back. You keep our Pandas happy, healthy and so well fed!!!

  84. Lisa T. in Rowlett, TX says:

Just finished watching the exam, and my what a robust little fella we have here. When the vet gave him that shot I felt just like I did when my babies received their first injections. I clenched up, closed my eyes, and almost covered my ears. He definitely didn’t like that and wanted his momma back.

Thank you for keeping us updated on his continued growth and letting us see and hear the exams! Us pandaholics all love what you do.

Question: It looked like the little guy had a runny nose. Can pandas catch colds or do they have allergies? Just wondered if the vets were concerned by this.

Moderator’s note: This question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  85. Ruth Renz says:

Thank you so much, Yadira, for this delightful description of Snuggles’ 5th exam. I also “felt” the needle when he was vaccinated. I don’t know if my female fellow bloggers agree but whenever I take my dogs and cats to the vet for their annual vaccination the females do not make one sound or squeak whereas the males do not seem to be too amused and express their fear or anger rather loudly. Sorry, guys, no ill feelings please! So I guess that our little prince has got the same privilege! I cannot agree more with you pandaholics that the baby gets cuter by the day if this is still possible. Now that his eyes are open he will soon get to know what the world looks and not only feels like. I am sure that this bundle of joy will soon become a very inquisitive and assertive panda bear. As Tami #33 says “You know I rule!” (Lovely conversation, Tami). It goes without saying that he is going to charm both his family and us humans.
Thank you, moderators and Meerkats for the videos and all the other up-dates. The “Sister Act” was incredible and truly heartwarming.

  86. Britney says:

Oh he is the cutest thing EVER!!! He is so big!! :)

  87. Shirley says:

I noticed that the shot was given in the general area on the cub’s back that Bai Yun uses to picks him up. Won’t it hurt him when she does that after his shot?

  88. Pat from Florida says:

Thanks for pictures and video. I Lovvvvvvvvve him!

  89. Lid says:

lol omg His more vocal ! I LOVE IT!!! his to cute…I think he is gonna be a handfull..I can’t wait to see him crawling and running !!

  90. Georgie from PA says:

Does Little Cuddles squeal when Mama Bai is vigorously “washing” him?
He was so vocal during his check-up, even though you were so gentle in handling him.
A cry was understandable during his necessary inoculation, poor baby.

I noticed today after his bath that Bai Yun seemed to be rocking him…..so human..
    Could that be so?
Thank you Panda Team, for answering our enumerable questions.
    You are the BEST!

  91. Panda Team says:

#84 Lisa T. in Rowlett, TX
Giant pandas, just like other animals, can develop respiratory disease. Allergies have not been documented, but they could occur. Veterinary staff is not concerned by the moisture around the cub’s nose.

  92. Belinda Jacobs says:

Hey just gets more adorable with time. I wonder how big he will be in May. I plan on attending the Mothers Day VIP tour, and can’t wait to see him.

  93. Deana says:

Oh no little one….you are sleeping right now but your cute little nose is face down on the bamboo, hurry turn your head to the side so you don’t hurt your cute little nose. Don’t want to take a chance on sniffing some roughage into your nose. That would hurt you.

All kidding aside, cubbie looks so peaceful laying there sleeping. I still wish I could take a sleeping bag into the den and sleep with him. But…..momma would NOT like that at all.

  94. Darlene in Chilliwack, BC says:

#92 Belinda, what is the Mothers Day VIP tour? (focusing on Panda’s maybe???)

  95. Jim in Santa Ana, CA says:

Great Panda boy-baby our pair had this time. He will live and grow to be a ‘Giant Panda’, you mark my words…. Hahaha. I’m still in love with ZZ though.

One suggestion for the examining team:
Make sure you have completed all other parts of the exam ‘before’ giving your inoculations and possibly causing the cub’s noisy reaction. That way Bai Yun will be able to eat her meal in peace.

  96. Shirley says:

OK, did anyone else just see the ADORABLE time Bai Yun spent with baby on her tummy. It seems that now with his eyes open, they spend more time interacting. True? At one point she had baby on her tummy, and she looked right up at the camera. Almost like she was saying, “Isn’t he cute?” I HAVE to quit spending so much time in front of my laptop, but this panda saga is too compelling to quit.

  97. Bruce In KC says:

Tai Shan got a phone call today from his newest panda cousin in the US. The new cubbie had lots of questions for his cousin the Sooperpanna!

Cubbie: “Hewoo, is dat you, cuzzin Tai?”

Tai Shan: “Yes it is! I heard your eyes are open now and you got another checkup today.”

Cubbie: “Dat wuz beary stwange! Awl dis time I thought dere were other pannas dere, but it turned out dey were hoomins, and dey wook funny!”

Tai Shan: “Why did they look funny?”

Cubbie: “Dey don’t hab furs, dey shaved it awl off!”

    Tai Shan: (laughing) “anything else?”

Cubbie: “Wemember when you told me abouts dose dasterdley beez dat stung you? I think one gots me during da checkup, and I wuz not beary happy! Dat hurt!”

Tai Shan: “That was a shot, the veterinarians give you those now and then to help keep you from getting sick.”

Cubbie: “I still don’t wike dem!”

Tai Shan: “You better go take a nap, and then get some milk from Mommy so you will grow up big and strong, like me!”

Cubbie: “Okay, fanks for expwaining ebberfing to me!”

  98. Melodie says:

Thanks for the smiles. Reading about this adorable panda and watching the videos, is priceless! I was born in San Diego. Wish I were closer now! I so want to see them! Thank you for all you do.

  99. peach in SD says:

Our boy does seem to be more active tonight–maybe not sleeping so well after his shot?

THANK YOU so much for the cub comparison chart!
It’s awesome, just like you guys there on the panda team.

  100. Deana says:

    #97 very good!!!!

Moderator: I am curious to know that when cubbie geys his vaccines, will he run a slight fever afterwards like us humans?

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.

  101. Kathy says:

I think he squealed because the shot hurt him, poor little guy. I hate needles too.

  102. Shirley from Miami says:

TOOOOOOOOOOO CUUUUTEEE!!!!!!! Can’t get enough! =) I love him!

  103. Tina in SC says:

We all know Mommy rules… but… Is one of the concerns the team has that she will bust the door down? She is a really big bear! And you did hurt her baby. Could she? Or is the door strong enough to hold her off? What is the main concern her welfair, the cubs or you all? I know she “knows” you all out there but would she or could she become a true Mother bear for her cub? Do Panda’s do that?

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  104. Danielle, NY says:

It looks as it is the beginning of “Camouflage 101″ in the den…

  105. Carolyn says:

#97 love the phone call with tuzzin tai. #84 pandas do get some of the same ailments humans do. tai has one that is similiar to acid reflux in hoomins that the staff treats him for when needed. they give him meds in his biscuits and watch his diet more closely when it flares up.

quesiton – since the cubbies also do not seem to like the thermometer in the tushie part of the exam does the sdz skip that part.

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.

  106. Katie from Hawaii says:

The cubbie is too cute. It’s 1PM in Hawaii right now and he has his head up looking out of the den. Probably sensing the fact that he, too, one day will be able to take that walk. Earlier today, he had rolled out of the den door. On Bai’s return, she picked him up and cradled him in the den. With his eyes open… new adventures begin. Thank you Panda Keepers.

  107. Erik says:

Thought of good name for panda. Perhaps Gao Shan or Tai Xiang would be good. Keep growing panda!!!

  108. Carolyn says:

one more for the panda team – why canine distemper as opposed to feline distemper. is it because dogs are typically larger than cats.

Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Team.

  109. Ruth Renz says:

#97 Bruce, the conversation was soooo sweet, I just loved it, particularly the “baby”-language. Thank you for making my day which is rather a bit of a drab one today. So good to have the panda cam which is sort of an antidote for beating the “blues”. Whenever I see this little guy my heart goes out to him and to his mommy. He surely is growing like “bamboo on at wet day”. When lying in Bai’s arms he is soooo big now. I vividly remember him looking soooo small and vulnerable. One thing is for sure, he has outgrown these days!

  110. Panda Team says:

    #105 Carolyn
For the panda cub exams, a body temperature would be taken only if a problem was suspected.

  111. Susan in NJ says:

Thank you for your excellent post Yadira! I just wanted to say thank you to the Panda team at the SDZ. Your posts and the Pandacam have given friends and myself hours upon hours of enjoyment. Thank you for taking such great care of these beautiful animals.

I am curious….if you listen to the video carefully you can hear some banging in the background and the panda handler looked back. Was that Bai Yun banging to get into the den?

Moderator’s note: Yes. That’s why the exam ended so quickly!

  112. Panda Team says:

    #108 Carolyn
The terms “feline” and “canine” distemper actually refer to two different viruses; the feline distemper refers to a disease caused by a parvovirus while canine distemper is caused by a morbillivirus. Giant pandas are susceptible to the canine distemper virus.

  113. Carolyn says:

Panda Team – Thank you for taking the time to answer all the questions everyone has asked. Pandas are magical, mystical and mesmerizing.

  114. Tina in SC says:

Polar bears, black bears and brown bears we have all heard the stories of momma’s and their cubs.. but these are Panda Bears. Are they sweet little never bite a thing cute little bears.. or would she turn into a protective BEAR Mother like you read about? Are they capable of this? We have all seen the pictures of her loving on her on the cub.. we know momma has 3 inch long claws. Has there ever been any kind of agression shown in any Panda or is that a trait that the other bears never gave to the Pandas?

Moderator’s note: A previous post, Some Questions Answered, has great info this.

  115. Panda Team says:

    #100 Deana
We don’t monitor the body temperatures post-vaccination.

  116. Joy in Yuma says:

Thank you for all the great updates. Especially interesting, the Panda Cub Milestone – Comparing all Five!

  117. Tina in SC says:

Carolyn #105… Can you think of a single animal that does like that part? We even made some for under arms and ears and stuff because our children don’t like it. Can’t we use one of those on the baby?

  118. Donna Hale says:

I watch Moma and Baby alot. Why is Moma gone so much now?

Moderator’s note: Since the cub is bigger and has hair and a good fat layer to keep him warm, Bai Yun can spend more time outside of the den feeding. If she didn’t eat enough, she wouldn’t be able to produce enough nutritious milk for her little one!
