Panda Cub: Second Exam
Posted at 12:15 pm September 10, 2009 by Holly Border
Note cubbie's milk moustache!
After taking measurements and receiving a checkup by the vets, it was time to put him back. I quietly laid him in the bamboo covering the floor of the den and closed the bedroom door. Mother Bai stayed calm during the exam, munching on bamboo and biscuits. But as soon as she was given access to the bedroom, she returned to the den to check on her baby. She is such a good mom!
It’s fun watching the new cub grow up, and I can’t wait to see how big he is next week!
Holly Border is a keeper at the San Diego Zoo.
Note: The panda cub weighed 3.9 pounds (1.8 kilograms) today. Here’s video of the exam! More images here…

I wish I saw you take the cubby out! Can you announce when you will do the next one so we can see it?? Or was it during that time you changed the cameras? He is toooooooooo cute! Especially watching him outside with his mom, I sent myself a few postcards. Hehe. Tooo Adorable!
Moderator’s note: The exams are usually done when Panda Cam is focused on one of the outside exhibit areas.

September 10th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Little cutie-pie butterball squeaky snuggles mini-Gao Cinco de Bai-o is big enough to be held by two people now! And he’s already been out for a walk in the sunroom–must be all that extra Vitamin D Bai is soaking up today. Can’t wait for the new video…
September 10th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
WOW! That is a 39.3% weight gain in 7 days. I also see physical changes to his face. He gets more adorable by the day. How like Bai to immediately check on her cub as soon as she had access. I marvel at her mothering skills. She is truly a very special panda. And how fortunate we are to be able to watch her.
September 10th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Thanks, Holly. He is such a cutie!!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

September 10th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Isn’t he just the cutest little thing? I am so envious of all the keepers who get to come in contact with the little wee one. He is just adorable, and such a testament to Bai Yun’s wonderful mothering! Can’t wait for the video of the wee one’s second exam. Thank you for all the updates!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
You are so lucky to have a wonderful job, Holly. Thanks for the update. I love watching cubbie boy grow day by day too.
September 10th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Little man is growing in leaps and bounds ! =) Thanx for the update.
September 10th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
What a handsome little boy! lifting his head now…….Is he crawling yet? To anyone who reads this, it’s worth it to wait until you see mom feeding, cleaning and putting him down for a nap….. Such gentleness. I often tear up just watching her obvious care for him….
Holly – congratulations on getting to hold him. I’ll bet there’s a connection straight from his little heart to yours now.
September 10th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Whoa – I missed our little guy going “out” already???? Darn it! He is a butterball for sure – a poung gained??? Hmmmm evidence left behind with his milk mustache!! He is adorable and congrats on your first time holding a baby panda – how exciting!! Keep up all the good work SDZ!!! Love y’all and our panda family!!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
the mustache is sooo cute on him! Reminds me of “got milk” commericals!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Thanks for the latest update, Holly. I’m glad that you got to hold a panda for the first time! I would have had butterflies tingling in my stomach from the excitement.
I forgot to mention that the cub’s first exam was featured in one of the news segments on the “Today Show” on Friday. Natalie Morales, who delivers the news updates, was all smiles as she said she’d love to squeeze the cub. He charms everyone who lays eyes on him.
The caption about the “milk moustache” made me laugh. Such a cute picture. Even his little panda feet are unbelievably cute. This little guy is absolutely delightful!
Thanks again for the update!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
He is just so perfect!! He reminds me so much of Mei Sheng..I bet he will be a mama’s boy just like his big brother.
September 10th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
Oh my gosh, he is too cute for words. Love the milk moustache. Can’t wait to see the video.
Thanks to all of you who keep us up to date!!
September 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
He is getting so big, look at how long and sharp his nails are. I have watched all 5 of Bia Yun’s births. I have to have a PandaCam fix everyday, any time I have a chance I log on.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Good to hear of a healthy cub. The cub now weighs more than my father’s maltese who weighs 3.5lbs. The cub is very cute and Bai does such a great job with him. Thanks for all your efforts
September 10th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
awwwwwww! Cute picture!!!!!!!! You keepers are so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so lucky!
September 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
Congratulations Bai Yun on another excellent mothering job! A 39=% weight gain in a week shows that he is eating very nutritious milk indeed. He is also quieter lately and seems to be very happy resting on his own facing the doorway with the way sunshine outside the den. When did he go for a “walk in the sunroom?” I was noticing how much more of the den floor he takes up now that he is almost 4 pounds. When he was first left alone, he was the size of one of the large pieces of bamboo Bai left in the den. Now he takes up a large footprint in the bamboo bedding.
I love his little claws in the photo being held up belly to the camera.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Oh my our little boy is growing up fast which is good news. But the next 17 months well pass so quickly and he’ll be on his own well let’s not think about right now and just enjoy every wonderful minute of him. I love the name Gao- Cino-de-Bai-o to bad that’s not all Chinese.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
The ENTIRE world is watching. Why why why why is the cam soooooooooooooo distant and fuzzy. Aren’t all the technicians trained the same way? PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE get things back to the way they were. Thank you.
Moderator’s note: The Panda Cam looks close and clear to us.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Thanks for sharing the news, he is growing up right before our eyes. I hadn’t seen him for a few days and then I thought to myself, “He’s grown!” but then I laughed.
Well, I was right! He has grown and is getting big and strong.
I’m trying to remember to enjoy the whole process without rushing to the next milestone.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Thank you so much for Panda Cam and the awesomeness that it is. HOLLY BORDER HAS THE BEST JOB EVER.
September 10th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I have been watching the panda cam since 2005 and loved helping in the naming of Su Lin and Zhen Zhen. I can’t wait until we get to be a part of naming Bai Yun’s latest bundle of joy. They are so precious and plan to take my grandchildren to the zoo next year to see the family in person (or person to panda…lol). Thank you for the pictures, updates and pics. ♥

Cubby played with mom’s nose today, and it was beyond cute! He patted Bai’s nose with one little paw, and Bai held very still. Then he patted it again and again – as though he’d made a new discovery of something fun. I think Bai found it cute, too, because she was very patient with him and didn’t move for a long time. (She was holding cubby out in front of her face.)
September 10th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
And speaking of Zhen Zhen, could we check in with her sometime? It’s been great to see Su Lin briefly, but I miss my Zhennie!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I am fascinated with Bai and her baby. Spend way too much time watching while at work…shhh! I am wondering if the there will be a naming contest etc. A friend and I figured out: Wu Zi Min = 5th son of heaven! Wu or Zi for short! Thanks for bringing so much joy into the world!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
I’ve also sent myself some postcards of Mom and her Little Man. SDZ is such a special place. Thanks for the cam and thanks for taking such good care of our pandas.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Cute doesn’t even begin to describe this little guy…I am so in love! Can’t wait until he is out to meet him in person.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Thank you so much for the adorable photos and update on the moustached cub! What a darling at 3.9 pounds! WOW! Today was a big day for him – first his 2nd exam and then Bai decided to take him into the sun room!! He’s got to be tired!
There is a YouTube video for those that missed the cub’s visit to the dayroom. Search for Bai Yun Outing. He was precious the way Bai kept him in her ‘lap’ as she peeked into the bedroom!!!
Thank you San Diego Zoo for giving us such vivid memories of this precious cub!!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
so cute. are you going to be doing a comparison chart with the other cubs for us to see?
Moderator’s note: We had hoped to, but it may take awhile.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
That little fella has got to be the most precious thing I have ever seen : ) LOL and omg those little claws!! And Bai Yun is so wonderfully tender and gentle with everything she does with him. I have seen her cradling the little fella as if he was a human baby. Hats off to all the caregivers at SDZ for making the animals feel so loved and comfortable. That must be in the top 10 for great jobs.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Oh my gosh,
It is so amazing to see the little cub grow with each picture, thank you so much for sharing this with the world..
We wish baby and mom all the best, as well as the technicians that are taking care of them..
Plse give him a hug and kiss for us!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Thank you for the photos and the update! Dying to see the video !!
#21 Char: Cam is fine and clear for me, maybe check your PC settings?
September 10th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Baby is sure precious (as are his sisters and brother before him)! He is so lucky to have such a wonderful panda mama too… Bai Yun is the best
September 10th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Thank you, thank you for keeping us so informed on the little guys progress. The new pictures are adorable and show how much he’s grown. Those little bitty claws are tooooo cute. The “milk moustache” made me laugh too. So happy for Holly—what a privilege to hold the new baby. Ok, didya’ sneak in just one little bear hug?!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
The most beautiful scene right now in the den — Bai is lying on her right side with an outstretched right arm and Little Man is up by her paw on his left side facing her.
He seems to be doing so incredibly well which is a testimony to Bai’s wonderful care and nurturing!
September 10th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Love the pic’s of our little chubby cubbie… wow, what a healthy looking little cub hey? His Momma is top notch in my “Panda book”!!!! Just looking at them now, the are both sleeping and look so relaxed and content. Earlier it was so cute, Bai was sunning herself (well her upper body) and our little guy seemed to be enjoying it as well.
Thanks for the post and the new pics..
oh and the cam is crystal clear from my computer….
September 10th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Oh, and I forgot to say I love the new Cam page, it is almost “Zhen” Like… imagine that????
September 10th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Well Holly, now all Panda Lovers have TWO people to be envious of!
Little Cinco De Bai-o has really grown in the last week! Each day, I end up sending myself a postcard when Bai and baby are together. To think that 5 weeks ago he fit in the palm of his momma’s hand and now he seems as long as her ‘arm’. Wow!!!
What a cutie
September 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Wow what a cutie he is!!.. I wish I could hold that cubbie. You keepers have the best job!
Can’t wait to see the video.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
The Panda Cam is clear for me too.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Thank you for sharing babies 2nd exam. He looks like he’s grown double in size since the 1st exam, wow!!! So glad to read he’s healthy and that cute milk moustache says it all. Bai Yun is such a good Mom. Any idea when you think baby might be opening his eyes and his ears??? Bless you all for all the great work you do with the pandas……………
Moderator’s note: Our previous cubs opened their ears/eyes at 50 to 60 days.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Like someone else said, this is the first time I’m watching the day-by-day adventure of Bai and her little baby boy. One question — how do the people doing the exam avoid leaving scents on the baby? Are the gloves made of some special material that does not leave any residue or scent? Would it be a problem if Bai detected the scent?
Moderator’s note: We can’t fool Bai Yun. She can detect the scent from the gloves worn during the exam, but she seems to accept it as part of the routine of cub care.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Oh my goodness, it is just wonderful to be able to see the mom and baby boy anytime. I loved the pictures today of his second exam. He is a little butter ball
September 10th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
baby boy just seems to take everything in stride doesn’t he?? what a little trooper he is, and lucky to have bai yun as his loving, nurturing mommy!!! he sure has big feet and long claws for a little guy! maybe he will be bigger than daddy who is not really that big! although they say the best things come in small packages! hehe! it’s amazing how much baby boy has grown in such a short time!! especially when you think how tiny he was at birth. A PINK HAIRLESS STICK OF BUTTER!! NOW THE SIZE OF A 3 1/2 LB ROAST!!
I too love the sweet mothering instincts of bai with pee wee! she has lots of experience and lots of mothering skills to provide for her lucky cub. if this is her last cub, so be it! she has done a wonderful job and SDZ has learned alot just by watching her! FIVE GREAT CUBS! thank you bai yun!
September 10th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Welcome Holly, what an enviable priviledge to hold Bai’s darling cub – he is growing so fast.
Think he will turn out to be a replica of our Mei Sheng…
September 10th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Just saw little guy by himself in the den laying down on his side! Now, that’s a new milestone for him at a month old! Saw the pics of the 2nd exam, and I did see the milk mustache on the cub’s mouth! CUTE!!! And, he’s still a plump little guy, too! Moderator, can you please try to get all of the measurements on the cub for the first 2 exams? We only got his weight and length, but nothing else. We will all appreciate it very much!
Friday, September 11, 2009 is Patriot Day! Please remember and support our troops, remember those who have died since that awful day 8 years ago. We should never forget about the freedom that we do have now to go to places that we enjoy, such as the San Diego Zoo and other zoos/sanctuaries in our country. I love the USA, and I love all the animals everywhere!

OMG that would be cool….can that big guy be the next poster for “Got Milk?” !!!! lol that was to cute of pic…that would be alot of exposure about Pandas and the endangered animals.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Plumpers is a perfect example of a panda cub at the very beginning of the “excruciatingly, painfully cute” stage which they never really grow out of. When his eyes open, WATCH OUT! Cuteness to infinity! The milk mustache is too precious for words! I’m also impressed that his tummy is able to expand to the size it does; he’s a little glutton for Mama Bai’s rich milk.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I have to agree with the moderator, Char.
The cam is GREAT! My hat’s off and my gratitude and thanks to whomever assures we have an “up close and personal” view of the pandas anytime we want. Thanks “camera guy”…….
Char, I don’t know for sure – but I’ll bet you’re like me – the only thing that will be “good enough” for us – is to be sitting inside the den right up next to him……….
September 10th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
ElCinco de Bai-o gets cuter every day
He sure is growing but think the 3.9 lbs is a typo – The milk mustache is too cute
Thanks for the word on the youtube video of the excursion out of the den – what a day -an exam & an outing
September 10th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
OOpps my mistake about the weight – got distracted – he’s a big guy
September 10th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Everything said. . . “Little cutie-pie butterball squeaky snuggles mini-Gao Cinco de Bai-o ” and “And speaking of Zhen Zhen, could we check in with her sometime? It’s been great to see Su Lin briefly, but I miss my Zhennie!” Been watching since Zhennie was born. Thanks SDZ for the GREAT panda cam but give Zhen Zhen some air time.

i can hardly believe my eyes, prince butterball is getting so big, so fast.
bai is certainly going to have her paws full, trying to lift and transport this fella.
just wait till he gets moving!
nothing surpasses this cuteness.

Does anyone know when the baby’s eyes will open? We’re very curious!
Moderator’s note: 50 to 60 days.
September 10th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
The little guy’s cuzzin “Sooperpanna” Tai Shan initially nicknamed him “Loud Loud” when he was born, but may have to rethink his choice of nicknames after viewing the videos of the two exams so far. Momma Bai Yun, you better enjoy the peace and quiet now, for the ear and hiney biting will start before you know it!!
September 10th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Can you see the tiny feet under that rollie bottom? How cute is that? OMG, I am so going to get fired over this baby! Look at those tiny bottoms of his tiny feet.
September 10th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I was anxiously awaiting the baby’s second exam today. It was so exciting to know that we would soon be getting more color photos and video of the tubby one. He is so adorable – sometimes I am moved to tears watching how perfect his little body is and how tenderly Bai Yun takes care of him. Panda baby rearing must be one of the most time and labor intensive of all creatures – a true labor of love. And baby seems to be growing by the hour. Panda milk must be very rich. Does the SDZ give Bai Yun any special vitamins or supplements when she is lactating to make sure her milk is rich enough? Can baby detect the light when Bai brings him to the door of the den and outside?
He is growing so fast – it is wonderful to watch him wiggle his body about a bit and squeek during the exam – nice to see him slowly becoming conscious of his surroundings and the world apart from what must be the wonderful softness of Bai Yun.
Holly responds: Bai Yun does not need vitamins or supplements.
September 10th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
He is very cute. What a great video I saw the moustache on him looked real good to me. The SDZ people have the best job that I know. God bless #48 I thank God for the troops ever day for the life we live. How are the polar bears doing? What time did mom and pee wee go out side? So I can watch at that time. Thank you SDZ keep up the good work.
September 10th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Watching the 2nd exam, as with the 1st, baby looks like he has a little cold, his little nose is wet, I guess that’s normal? That little mustache…that is too darn cute… wait til his eyes open, it’s amazing how they have been shut all this time. Bet his first words will be “momma, you are so pretty, I love you.”
Addicting….
September 10th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
WTG Holly!
Congrats on getting to touch the panda baby!!
Bai is such an awesome momma and I am amazed at the plumpness of this cub! She is doing such a good job! I have long wondered, what do pandas smell like? How coarse is the fur on a baby panda? Sensory-wise, I’d love to know everything you can tell me about them!
Thanks,
Michele
Holly responds: They smell of bamboo. And pandas do not have soft fur, not even the babies.
September 10th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Friday, 10:45pm EDT: Just saw pandacam, and watched Bai finally take that huge thick piece of bamboo out of the den! WHEW!!! Glad that she got that done, and no doubt she’ll be eating it up. Little peewee is by himself on his tummy and doesn’t have to worry about that big bamboo stalk in his way anymore. Also watched the video of the 2nd exam tonite. He did a little bit of squealing this time around, but not too much. Overall, he’s taking these exam visits very well. I still love that milk mustache mouth that he had today! Got Milk anybody?? I do!!
Gonna go for now. Getting back on the pandacam to check in on baby!

Just popped in tonite from home to see the video of the second exam, since videos are now blocked at work (including pandacam, sob sob). But couldn’t get past the pandacam because there was #5 bubba cubba all by himself on closeup. Watched him for 10 minutes before the cam zoomed out to a full den view, all the time no Bai Yun in sight. You know, on closeup he is quite a little wide load.
I became curious as to how long Bai would leave him alone. After 31 minutes, she came into the den, sniffed at cub, then removed a big scrap of bamboo & left the den, and just now came back in after another 13 minutes absence to nurse the cub. That’s pretty much a 45 minute absence, maybe more before I tuned in. Bai must have been visiting the late night bamboo buffet.
I’m off now to watch the exam video, do some quick online shopping, then back to watching US Open tennis & Steelers football. Busy night for me.
September 10th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
I’ve been popping in and out of the panda cam all this evening and everytime I have it seems that the little one is alone. Does this mean that Bai Yun is more relaxed leaving him alone more often now and/or is she getting back to her normal routine…………..OMG………..they are so wonderful to watch…..TYSVM!!!
September 10th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I have been watching the cam for a few hours and havent seen Bai around. The baby has been by himself. Is he ok? Is Bai ok?
September 10th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Yes i am happy to hear that the baby boy is healthy. He is so cute. The mom is so good to him keep it up Mom bai yun!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Looking at the Time Lapse Video for yesterday, 9/9, it looks like baby is scooching around a bit or are you considering it crawling? Ever so slightly and can probably only see this on the video. Are my eyes seeing things? When is baby to start crawling….it seems so soon!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
As everyone else has said, thanks Holly for sharing all this cuteness with the world!! I have been watching Bai Yun raise babies on the cam since her first, Hua Mei, was born in 1999!!! She is the most amazing mom. Like others, I feel like crying when I watch the way she takes care of her cubs. When things in the world are rough, we should all look at the pandacam!! It is nice to see how many others appreciate this adorable miracle!!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
#49 Lid – what a great idea!
So glad to hear our little panda prince is doing very well. But what else could we expect from a mother who is so devoted. Lovely video! Lovely photos!! Thank you SDZ.
I’m getting more excited by the day – come October 23, I will be in Panda Canyon again – my second visit to SDZ. Looking forward to more balmy weather – we can feel winter coming up here in Canada.
September 10th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
He is so so cute! he’s geting fat! i agree with Lid about him being the next poster for “Got milk”, it whould cute! and make me want to frame the picture of the cub. Every one is calling the cub “cubbie” i like thay name for him! I love watching him (cubbie), i have a video of him on my new camera!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
The little boy is so so so so so cute! He is sooooooooo cute!
September 10th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
He is a little rock star!
September 11th, 2009 at 1:05 am
I am looking at the cam now 1:03AM 9/11/09 and I don’t see mom with the baby. She is out of camera view. where is mom sleeping? Can she go somewhere else during the night and eat and sleep? Baby looks content usually when I watch at this time they are together.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:15 am
cub is crying so cute, he seems not like his leg being measured .
September 11th, 2009 at 1:18 am
I am wondering, what is Bai Yun donig when she leaves Jnr all by himself? Can we see her?
Holly responds: Bai Yun is eating bamboo! The Panda Cam stays on the baby or other pandas who are doing something fun.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:20 am
so good to hear the baby is doing to well, you should think yourself extreeeeeeemly privileged to be able to hold one of the worlds rare and endangered animals, you are very lucky
:)
September 11th, 2009 at 2:51 am
What an honour Holly. If that had been me the poor little thing would have been squished and kissed to death! (Yes, I know you can’t do that, but I can dream can’t I.) Nice to see he’s enjoying his milk. I must have taken hundreds of photos/postcards over the last few weeks. Now, which of my cats wants to be a Panda for 5 minutes?! Hugs and kisses to Bai and little one. Oh, nearly forgot – how interesting that he has some webbing on his back feet, just like his Daddy Gao Gao. The genes are passed on….
My cam is crystal clear by the way.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:12 am
Thank you so much for the web cam and the updates. My kids have been watching the Panda cams for years now, and they love checking it every day!! Hopefully we’ll get down there to the zoo, to see them in person soon!!
September 11th, 2009 at 6:07 am
cub like a balloon, getting bigger and bigger by every second.
September 11th, 2009 at 6:56 am
I MISSED viewing Momma Bai and Baby boy for the last two days!!! Life is not the same anymore without seeing them everyday. Holly, congratulation:-)…I’m sure, it feels heavenly to touch those soft fur.
It is sooooooooooo cute to see his milk moustache!!! SDZ keepers, vets and everyone involved in these precious lives: THANK YOU VERY MUCH for sharing the good news to us. YOU’RE THE BEST….
By the way, the new panda page is wayyyyyyyy coooooooooool:-)……..I LOVED IT. Thank you, Moderators.
September 11th, 2009 at 6:59 am
Cute overload is all I can say about this little guy. He really seems to be ahead of the learning curve, having already gone on a “den trip” with mom. Holly – it must have been so awesome to hold a cubbie the small. Holding a cubbie is definitely on my bucket list
!!! Cheers to the SDZ staff and thanks for the cam – it always puts a smile on my face.
September 11th, 2009 at 7:04 am
He is so cute! I live in Oklahoma City and have been watching since his birth. I’ll be in San Diego the week of Sept 21st and definately plan on visiting the Zoo and seeing the new baby boy! Thank you so much for all of the updates and the live cam shots!
Moderator’s note: Please remember that mom and cub will still be in their back area and not viewable by Zoo guests when you come. But Su Lin and Zhen Zhen will be glad to see you!

Lid #49, I think you have read our minds about the little guy and the “Got Milk” poster. It’s a perfect idea. Think of the good publicity for pandas everywhere. It is just amazing how quickly cublet is growing and gaining weight. Bai Yun (and everyone else involved), you are doing a good job.

I would LOVE to know the measurement of his belly – how ROUND is he???? I just want to cuddle him up!!
September 11th, 2009 at 7:43 am
The frog fur is disappearing on our little man! He’s is just getting cuter every day. Great close ups this morning, Meerkats! Thank you. And thank you for the update. You know how we all live for them
And love the milk mustache.
This morning at ZA, there appears to be a tub with ice(?) in it, and Xi Lan is playing like a mad man. But the transmission is so poor it’s hard to tell!
September 11th, 2009 at 8:18 am
Is Bai Yun okay and the cubbie? She has been leaving him more frequently so I was just getting worried.
Moderator’s note: It’s all a part of the process. Please don’t worry, Deana. Everyone is fine.

The local news station I watch had our little guys 2nd exam video on this morning at 6:15 a.m. What a wonderful way to start my day off. The announcers were falling all over themselves when they noticed the milk moustache. Everyone seems to just melt when they see a baby panda.

Moderator: Thank you so much for answering my questions, I feel much better now. Now back to the panda cam!!!!!

To All: For those of you who missed seeing Bai take Baby out of the den, there is a video from Sept. 10th now up on You Tube. I think I typed in San Diego Zoo and then clicked on most recent when I found it. The video was one of DoxieMom’s. Very Cute
Also, how fun to see our Black and White Momma and Baby in color because they went outside the den
Also, perhaps it is because football season, but does anyone other than me think that sometimes when Bai is playing with Little Dude, he looks like a football? I love to watch Bai hold him when he is squirming around
September 11th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Cubbie is so so very cute. He is a big little boy! He is the cutest thing. He’s a chubble cubbie! Bai Yun right now is with her baby, alsleep!
September 11th, 2009 at 10:21 am
On San Diego’s Twitter you can get a better shot of milk moustache. Twitpic is quite large.

Kat W#61…I could read your comments for hours. I just love the way you express love for these panda’s. That said…I hope that is the first things he says when his eyes open and not “OMG!!! There’s a bear in my house!!”.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:10 am
He is such a cute little baby panda. I started watching this cam when a friend told me about the cub being born. I have been watching every work day and just melting from all the “aaaaaaaawwwsss”. I have started watching the National Zoo and the Atlanta Zoo cams too. Can anyone tell me what it means when a panda stands against a wall or fence and bounces back and forth sideways on their feet? Also, that den looks pretty small and Bai Yun looks huge in it so how does she keep from stepping or falling on the baby?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun’s den is about the size of dens used by panda mothers in the wild. She is very careful!
September 11th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Is Baby safe when Momma Bai takes him outdoors?
It is San Diego and not Philly, so probably OK!
Is the nest cushioned?
He really gets bounced around sometimes when Bai awakens suddenly from her nap.
I guess her instincts are better than mine on Panda Baby Care!
You all are on top of “things” via Panda Cam…
So.. …I’ll stop worrying.
Moderator’s note: Just enjoy watching Bai Yun do what she needs to do for her cub and for herself. No need to worry!
September 11th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Poor little guy – he is not looking so happy right now. Mama will be back soon, hang in there baby…
September 11th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Cubbie has the cutest feet!!! He’s on his back and they are sticking straight up in the air. Why am I telling you all that? You already know that.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Bobbie #90–Though I’m much more of a baseball fan myself, I agree with you about that football thing. He’s probably about that size now too.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
I think it is time for our baby boy to start doing a milk commercial. Too precious! Thank you for sharing that shot with us!
September 11th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
I have been following since the birth. I am so amazed and love to see him growing! She is such a good mother!
September 11th, 2009 at 12:40 pm
I loved the technical medical terms that the vet used on the first exam video….”initial cute stage” and “roly poly”…….
September 11th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Another great panda cam moment as there is a close-up of Bai’s ear, neck and shoulder with the cub’s head peeking out from under Bai’s protective arm. Seeing the sunlight on Bai’s face makes her look even more beautiful and seeing the cub facing out towards the world makes me anticipate the adventures that are ahead of him. They look ready to conquer the world…or maybe just the panda exhibit for the near future.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
#94 Teresa…Did you happen to be watching the NZ cam when you saw the panda standing up while rocking side-to-side? If so, that’s Mei Xiang and she’s just doing her “panda dance.” She does that when she wants to eat, go outside, or come inside. In other words, she does that several times a day. It’s kind of her trademark.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
There is nothing cuter than that milk mustache! Until tomorrow, then there will be something else.
I can hardly contain my excitement about this web cam. It’s on 24/7. My boys (16 & 24) say this is why I can’t find a job! They’re just jealous because the Panda’s get more attention!
I love that you can send postcards. It would be great if we could do that with all the live cams. Today the Polar Bears were HILARIOUS! Swimming around with burlap sacks. They’d come up out of the water looking like they had washcloth’s on their heads!
September 11th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
#103 Melissa – that dance that Mei Xiang does, isn’t that what other bloggers call the “Stevie”? And why is that? Is it a move that Stevie Wonder made famous? Just curious! So enjoying all the updates from you all. Welcome to all the new bloggers! Get the word out there – we need to save the pandas!
September 11th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Is that a belly button on Cubbie? Not real clear on how all that works for the pandas. On the birthing video it looked like he just kind of slipped on out? Thanks for any insight : )
September 11th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Adorable baby cub. I have enjoyed watching him grow and seeing how his mom is soooo good to him.
Maybe she is producing cream for him to drink!!!! I enjoy watching the cub alone in the nest and how he tries to get around a bit. It probably is such a fun thing to handle him when he has his exams. I would just love pat his little round tummy.
September 11th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
What a wonderful experience you have given to so many people to witness such a thing as this. It almost feels like we know that baby personally! Thank you!
September 11th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
I just love that little guy!! Mama is so gentle. When she nurses him, she looks so content. I look forward to my “visits” with them every day!!
September 12th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
#105 Pandafan…I didn’t know that Mei’s dance had a name! LOL Now that you mention it though, she does look a bit like Stevie Wonder when she rocks back and forth. I love her dance…it makes me smile every time I see it and I’ve always wondered how she came to do that. Some pandas just have rhythm, I guess!
September 12th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Wow, baby Panda is growing so fast. What a cutie!
Love hearing him for the first time during his 2nd exam and that
“Got Milk” mustache, he has to do that commercial.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Melissa, thanks for answering my question about the rocking. She does look a bit like Stevie Wonder rocking at the piano except she does it standing up. Its pretty hilarious to watch. Wonder how she started doing that. It must work for her cause she does seem to get some treats when she does it sometimes. And yes I was watching the National Zoo cam and have seen her do that several times. Good to know that is Mei Xiang doing the rocking. the Nat’l Zoo doesn’t have numbers on the cam to tell you who you are watching and since all the pandas there are grown, I can’t tell which panda I’m watching altho I guess when you see two of them, thats Tian Tian and Mei Xiang and the panda by himself is Tai Shan. I much prefer the way the San Diego cam is set up with the numbers so I know I’m watching Su Lin or Zhen Zhen. So far, haven’t managed to catch Gao Gao.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
I think they should the cub Hsing-Hsing because the 10th anniversary of hsing hsing death is coming up and hsing hsing should be honored by having this cub named after him.
September 13th, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I love watching this little guy grow and change. I’m blessed from your zoo giving us this opportunity! THANK YOU! I love wild animal webcams. Watched Li’l Smokey, the bear cub injured in a California fire, heal and rehab at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care in South Lake Tahoe, CA, and set free Feb. of this year!
September 13th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
The cub is soooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love him!!!! I send myself some postcard everyday!!!
much love!
September 14th, 2009 at 9:05 am
#112 Teresa…This might help a little with the camera numbers, although it’s not foolproof because occasionally they move the pandas around at the NZ. *Usually* the cameras from 11-20 belong to Mei Xiang’s rooms and yards. Cameras numbered below 10 are Tian’s rooms and yard. The cameras in Tai’s room include 37-40 and the cameras in his yard include (but not limited to because I can’t remember exactly right now) 28-29. The camera numbers are right above where it says ‘HOLD’ on the lower left of the screen. Tai and Tian are most often switched.
Mei Xiang always makes me smile when she dances. She likes to let her keepers know that she’s ready to eat or move in or out if she thinks they might be taking too long.
Have fun watching all the pandas!
September 14th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
can baby see yet? he’s sitting, facing the nursery door, he looks like he’s just sittin’ there, looking out…so cute!
My, what a big boy he is….
September 14th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
I just cannot tear myself away from watching this perfect little boy. He is a bruiser! Bai Yun is just a great mom the way she takes care of him. She just astounds me with the way she loves on this baby. Congrats to all of the zoo personnel who make sure these beautiful animals are so well taken care of.
September 14th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
..not here either….somebody? Anybody? the nest is EMPTY!!
September 14th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Wow, Bai took our little boy out at night? The den is empty for more than one hour. I miss them already.
September 15th, 2009 at 12:02 am
I’m starting to worry where Bai Yun has taken her baby. They’ve been gone for a long time. It’s late & it’s cold outside. : (
September 15th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
September 15: has baby panda opened his eyes yet?
Moderator’s note: No, a panda cub’s eyes open at 50 to 60 days.
