Sarah, thanks for the great update on the Okapi's and their new trees. It sounds like you had a very rewarding summer with lots of enrichment yourself.

Best wishes in your studies and your future career endeavors.

it's great that you can add more trees and shade for the okapi's enclosure. I am sure they will love it! they are a very unusual and beautiful animal. looking forward to the birth of a little one; I bet it's really cute! how long will the baby stay with mom? when you talk about their long tongue, it make's me think of the giraffe and their long tongues!! purplish, black if I remember correctly! thanks for the post!!

I agree. I imagine the summer interns have also learned a great deal about communicating with the public about their research and animal charges. Great for everyone!

Having the summer interns submit blogs for the zoo fans has been very rewarding. Not only do we learn about the importance of training the next generation of researchers and zoo keepers, but the students learn the importance of clear communication about their work to the general public. More and more, the American zoos have taken up the issue of education. We tend to value those things we understand. San Diego Zoo's blogs have introduced us to many species that we don't know much about. And as we learn about our fellow inhabitants of the planet, perhaps we will be more likely to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.

Moderator's note: We are so glad to hear you enjoy reading our blog posts. Thank you!
