How Well Do You Know Your Pandas?

Gao Gao

Gao Gao

We will be putting you to the test over the next few weeks. Our pandas will be moving about the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station every few days, and which bear is on which camera will change each time they move. It’s unlikely our intrepid moderator will be able to keep up with all of the rapid changes, so you will have to use your panda identification skills to help figure out which of our black-and-white bears you are currently seeing on the Panda Cam.

Why are we playing round robin with the pandas? It’s because our new bamboo cooler is ready for installation. Thanks to the generous support of you, our panda fans, our urgent plea for funding for a new bamboo cooler was answered. But there is still a lot of work to be done before the pandas can enjoy fresh bamboo straight out of the new cooler you provided for them.

A replacement cooler has been selected, and it’s time to prepare the site where the bamboo chiller will live. This involves many steps, including removal of the old coolers, demolition of the concrete in the area in order to prepare a new foundation for the new cooler, running the utilities to just the right spot, etc. Some of this work involves the use of equipment such as jackhammers, so during the loud portions of the process we will be moving Bai Yun and Gao Gao away from the noise source.

Bai and Gao will make their first move to the classroom area on Monday morning. The regular viewing area will be closed, since there won’t be any bears in that area anyway. Zoo guests will be able to view one of our adult bears in the classroom, and Su Lin and Zhen will be ensconced in their bedroom/garden room area. It will be a bit cozy in the top portion of our facility for a few days, but we feel this is in the best interest of all the animals so as to remove them from the vicinity of any potential stressors. Once the loud portion of this phase of work is complete, Bai and Gao will probably return to their regular exhibit spaces.

Once the site is ready to accept the new cooler, we will be ready to crane the unit into the facility. This should happen around the end of the month. It might necessitate another move to the classroom for our adult bears, but they are troopers who will be fine with this stimulation. Both of them have spent plenty of time in those areas over the years, and taking a few days’ hiatus from the lower areas should work out fine…

…unless, of course, Bai Yun says otherwise. If she shows any signs of estrus whatsoever—and we are monitoring hormones in order to get as early a warning sign as possible—the whole project puts on the breaks and waits. Once again, Momma bear rules.
Thanks again to everyone who helped us make this new cooler a reality. Soon, the bears will be benefiting from your generosity directly. In the meantime, have fun playing panda roulette!

Bai truly is the queen of Panda Canyon! :)

It sounds like the giant panda staff will have their hands full during the next couple of weeks. We will wait patiently (if not anxiously!) for news about Bai as she keeps us all in suspense. Will she or won’t she? And if so, when? She is the embodiment of feminine mystique, panda style! I’ve been admiring how she eats while lying flat on her back. What strong neck muscles she must have to keep her head elevated for such long periods of time! I’d spasm out in 2 minutes trying that feat! But that’s why she’s a panda and I am a mere human. ;)

  2. Lisa says:

Love the picture of Gao Gao with this update. It looks like he is covering his ears already!

  3. Chari Mercier says:

Yea!!!!! The new bamboo cooler is coming in!!! I know that all of the panda keepers are extremely happy to get this cooler in and get it installed as soon as they can! Then, they can take the old coolers to a recycle facility! You all are so welcome! All of us who were able to participate in this awesome fundraising were very happy to help you all out!
I know that Bai and Gao will be just fine in their yard switches. They’ve been used to this for a lot of years, and they’ll just have more fun smelling each other’s smells! Keeps their brains active! I’m also waiting for Bai to go into estrus as well! Lately on the pandacams, I’ve been seeing more of Gao than the other 3 pandas. Been wanting to check in on ZZ to see how she’s getting along by herself over the last couple of weeks.
Video alert!! Memphis Zoo has put in 2 new vids about Ya Ya’s estrus and AI. The first one is the Day 1 video that’s the whole entire video of the 3 part series; the second one is about Day 2 when they put Ya Ya and Le Le together again for a possible natural mating. The keeper said that if that doesn’t happen for the second round, then Ya Ya will have one more AI procedure done. I’ll keep checking the MZ panda page for more news on Ya Ya. This is pretty interesting in how they are handling this procedure this year.
Well, gonna go for now. Will check back in later on!

The panda I can identify hands down is Gao. He has such distinct features! All of the girls I have just a little more trouble with. Zhen’s a bit easier since she’s still “tiny” compared to the other 2 girls.

  5. kathy says:

Ummm..you know that now that you said that out loud or in print as it were that she will go into estrus…

I notice Gao is locomoting alot today, is he raring to go then or is his bamboo delivery late and he’s just impatient!

  6. Lee in Vancouver says:

Now we see why SD has room for 6 pandas. You can do all this work and still supply private rooms for each one.

Since the cooler was everyones Christmas present, the delivery and installation is everyones Easter gift. We were happy to do our part since you give us this marvelous site to express ourselves. Our families are so thankful that we get to talk pandas here and not to them (constantly).

    Let the guessing game begin!

  7. Susan (UK) says:

It sounds a bit like musical bears to me! Gao Gao I can recognise. The others are a little more difficult, especially since they will be out of their normal exhibit and that usually helps me know who is who. Never mind, the important thing is that the cooler is coming. Good luck with that and hope all goes well.

I’m enjoying working a cross stitch at the moment of tiny little pandas climbing lots of bamboo stalks – they are so cute. I shall probably give them all names when I’ve finished!

  8. Lid says:

Hail to the Queen B ! SDZ hasn’t really updated how ZZ is doing..is she really doing really well without mama?

  9. Joy :) says:

What a thrilling time to be a panda. Getting a new cooler will provide them with better boo. I think I will eat a nice crisp, cool salad today in honor of the event. :)

I can’t wait for the fun of the “Which panda is that now?” GAME on pandacam.

  10. Linda A. says:

This is going to sound weird, but I’m so excited about the cooler. It’s like a little bit of me is now at the Zoo, and helping our pandas. That is very cool! But I’d be more excited if Momma Bear went into estrus!

  11. nancy from michigan says:

lots of things going on at the zoo as usual. alot of wait and watch and change in mid-stream if need be!
you really have to be flexible in all your plans don’t you? makes it more exciting though right?
madam queen bai is under scruitiny at all times right now! hopefully I will be able to tell the pandas apart without the guide to fall back on! we are all waiting and watching right along with you in panda land from our computers. and, some of you lucky enough to be able to visit and see the real live version and observe!
hooray for the in-coming bamboo cooler and hopefully hooray for bai and gao! time will tell! we are just too impatient, ( like little kids! )

  12. Kris says:

#2 Lisa – you are right! Gao does look like he is covering his ears with a look on his face that says “what IS all that racket??” And he is climbing a tree – a little unusual for him. Spring is an exciting time at the zoo and with the arrival of the new cooler, things are busier than ever! You go, Bai girl. Your handsome Gao awaits you! :)

  13. Margaret says:

Ditto Melissa #1 “Bai truly is the queen of Panda Canyon!” She is the one who calls the shots because she is the one who controls the future destiny of her family and potential family.

It is exciting to hear that the bamboo cooler is finally becoming a reality, just in time for the warmer weather to start showing up.

It will be interesting research opportunity to watch how all 4 bears respond to the new activity and sounds in their territory and to the enrichment and stimulation that is a byproduct.

We look forward to the musical bears!!!

  14. Suzanne (the other one) says:

    Suzanne,

Thanks for the update and for answering (without even giving us a chance to ask/worry) about Bai Yun and possible estrus! Phew! That was the first thing that came to mind as I was reading about the moving pandas! Is there any sort of ‘howdy’ gate in the area where Bai and Gao will be? I remember, two years ago, Gao’s nose was such an incredible early warning sign of impending estrus… Since this year might be even more truncated, I’m thinking ANY help in identifying will be much welcomed. I know you (and the rest of the SDZ folks) will do the normal fabulous job at keeping us all posted!

    Yay Boo Cooler!!!

Thanks for the ongoing wonderful Gao family care that you all provide and the thoughtfulness that is always there (making sure they are as protected from the noise and upset as possible). If you need extra space, I’m sure you’d have MANY volunteers!

  15. Catbelly says:

Thanks for the update and the adorable photo of my Gao. He may be covering his ears but I think he’s pre-surveying the job at hand. I’m sure he’ll be quite the foreman as the workers begin the steps to get the new cooler in place. You tell ‘em Gao. Fresh, chilled boo is on the way!

We’re all watching you Mommy Bai!! Then again, we’re watching whoever is on cam. Just can’t help it :) .

  16. jersey says:

    Hey everyone,
Let’s list some characteristics to help us tell the difference between the girls…

Agree Gao is easy…he has his own sexy rakish look. Funny one morning he was up at 3am eating bamboo!

The girls will be a bit harder to distinguish. My only hope is to tell who is who from their sizes but that can be deceiving on the pandacam. Mom will mostly sleep on low objects. Su and Zhen will be up in the trees. other than that, the girls look like mini Bais. How about those sexy gold necklaces where the girl’s name is written…just like Sarah Jessica Parker in SATC…;-)

  17. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

Great news about the new bamboo cooler. And love how how all revolves around “our grand dame, Bai” Sound like things may be heating up for possible breeding.
Well, this should be fun – as much time as I spend watching the pandas other than Gao I still have no idea who I’m watching. I know all pandas have their own markings but haven’t figured them out – oh well, will just enjoy whoever is on the cam.
#7 Susan (UK) – would love to see how your panda cross stitch turns out – I did quite a bit of counted cross stitch – didn’t see any panda patterns – my last one was one 9 cats & by the time I’d done 3 cats was ready to give up so can’t imagine working on pandas.

  18. Frances in NYC says:

Ooh–this will be a challenge. But how can Bai and Gao Gao both be in the classroom–does it have separate areas?

Queen Bai’s “hood” comes to a beautiful point on her back–the girls’ are more rounded. Bai has a more majestic carriage and her ears are more regal–one of the other bloggers said they look like her tiara. Su Lin has a long tail like Gao Gao’s. Miss ZZ’s limbs are shorter than either Bai’s or Su Lin’s.

Anyway, they’re all beautiful–but I agree with others who have said we don’t get to see nearly enough of Zhen Zhen on pandacam recently. Got a couple of postcards of her sleeping/lolling on her platform yesterday–so cute.

  19. Shari says:

I know this is off the subject, but I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything recently about Fu Long the cub at the Vienna Zoo. Has he been weaned yet? Thanks!

  20. Chari Mercier says:

Breaking News from WAP!! Umgani, the African elephant, has given birth to her second baby elephant on Friday, March 13, 2009! It’s a boy, you all! I didn’t realize that Umgani was pregnant! There are new pics of him on the picture gallery in the What’s New section of the SDZ website. He’s a cutey, too! This is really great for them after the loss of Lungile’s baby elephant calf last year. They now have 12 elephants at WAP. No name for the new calf yet, but they will let us know what his name is soon.
I’m ready for the musical pandas! Will check the pandacams to see who is where. I’m like the rest of you all—the 3 girls will a little tougher to spot on the cams! At least ZZ is a little bit smaller than Bai and Su.
Well, gonna go and get to bed. Just thought I would write in to let you all know about the new baby elephant. Goodnite!

#16 jersey…I love how you described Gao as sexy and rakish! I saw him at 3:00 AM one morning, too, and chuckled at how he managed to be sitting right in the center of the camera frame. :)

    Two quick questions:

    1) Will the bamboo cooler installation and resulting pandamonium affect the pandas’ Bear Bonanza festivities next weekend?

    2) The pandas requested a boombox on the SDZ March wishlist…Aside from wanting to boogie to the vocal stylings of Beary Pandalow, would the boombox be an important component of the vocalization research going on? (Maybe they’ll get to listen to vocalizations from wild pandas or other captive pandas and see how that affects their breeding activity, etc.?) Sorry to be nosy…had to ask!

    Thanks!

  22. Betsy says:

I am glad for the cooler coming too and I love to watch Mr. Gao Gao trotting around his enclosure, waiting to meet with Bai Yun. I am happy with Zhen Zhen now that I see her doing all her tricks, like the climbing up the door, that was quite a trick to do. Looking for her new moms, the keepers. Now, on Friday afternoon I watching the elephants and I saw some elephants in the back of the enclosure, one looked really liyttle, and there was a party of keeepers and cameras going on. I thought there might be a baby elephant born and I was right, and I am so excited! I found out for sure. I don’t know which one had the baby[a big boy], but I am trying to figure it out, if anyone knows, please let me know. I think maybe Moya or Umgumbi. Thank for all the information.

Moderator’s note: Umngani is the proud elephant mother. This is her second calf!

  23. Shirley Williamson says:

I also, was wondering why we have not seen much of our little ZZ and big sister, Su Lin, on Panda Cam? Is little ZZ doing OK, getting used to being on her own. Will she get to peak at her sister at all?
Good luck with the Cooler installation. Hopefully, Momma and Papa Bear will be fine, and we can look forward to them producing another little cub.
Thanks for all the info on the great blogs.

  24. kathy says:

Shari #19: On another board I frequent a lady who posts there from Europe and visits Fu frequently says they have no plans yet to wean him, they are leaving that up to the mother panda to do naturally if she goes into estrus this spring. His mother and father apparently do spend time together – a few hours a day which is kind of interesting so she has access to her son and her mate but not together of course.

  25. Tony -ClearwaterFL says:

Soon, if not already, Bai will be “The Grand Dame” of pandas living in the US. I was glad to hear Hua Mei and Mei Sheng are doing well. Mei Sheng will be busy this year as a contestant on “Panda Dating Game”. Who will it be Mei Sheng? Bachelorette #1? Bachelorette #2? Or Bachelorette #3? Plus I hope he’ll be make a return engagement as Panda Claws of the West!

  26. Lindy from Cal. says:

Hi everyone, #17 in Michigan, I’m actually working on 1 of 4 panda cross stitches. The current one is called Panda Parade (absolutely delightful!) and Janlynn has a panda in their Wildlife series. There’s also a panda bookmark. The plastic canvas is hard to work with. I also have on finished with the chinese character for happiness on it! Keep looking, they’re out there.

  27. Joy :) says:

Early Sunday morning (really early SDZ time) I saw a keeper raking up “Gao’s exhibit area” for now (cam 1-2-3). It reminded me to say a big “THANKS!” to all the keepers who work so hard at (sometimes unglamorous) tasks to keep our beloved pandas happy. And, of course, they work for the “other animals” as well.
So, I decided this should be KEEPER APPRECIATION DAY for me.

T*H*A*N*K*S to all the Zoo K*E*E*P*E*R*S
    You are VERY MUCH appreciated!!!!!
    Love, Joy :)

P.S. Is there a “real” Zoo Keeper Appreciation Day? I’m a nurse and we have a week AND a day in the beginning of May.

Moderator’s note: There is a National Zoo Keeper Week, a week meant to highlight and celebrate all the things that keepers do, held in July. Read a blog about last year’s event

    http://www.sandiegozoo.org/wordpress/default/national-zoo-keeper-week/

  28. Cheryl says:

Wow — I just clicked on the link above to check out the new baby elephant — and he is so, so cute! But, let yourself watch the entire slide show and view the videos and you will see all of the new babies and youngsters at the SDZ and WAP. They are the most beautiful photographs and videos — just amazing! I came into work today to work — but I just couldn’t resist — what a treat!

  29. Peggy says:

Well it is Bai that I can readily identify and of course our little ZZ. Bai is simply beautiful. I mean Gao Gao looks fantastic but Bai’s fur just looks so silky and she is so big. She dominates whatever enclosure she is in and I’m sure she wants it that way. She is, indeed, Queen of Panda Canyon and anywhere else she decides to be. She is feeding herself very well and I know we’re all hoping that this bodes well for another special delivery this August but that is up to Bai.

  30. Pam T. says:

Glad to hear the bamboo cooler is on it way to being installed it makes you feel good to know you helped get it there. Was just watching Miss Zhen Zhen setting in the middle of a pile of boo and muching away so happy to see her.

  31. Dianne in Texas says:

Sweet pics of the new baby elephant. Unbelievable that they grow up to be so big; he looks so tiny, even tho they weigh 2-300 pounds at birth! I love babies! Speaking of which, I am getting withdrawal symptoms from not seeing Zip-Zip much anymore. I miss her. But watching Gao and Bai is cool too.

Wish you all would check out the new pictures of Tai Shan at NZP’s site. They really show his personality. One looks like he’s showing that he’s “King of the Hill”. Also some personality showing in his responses to new stuff going in at his side of the world. Also a new update to go with it.

Most of Texas has been getting some much needed rain this last week (4 inches in my backyard), for which we are all extremely grateful. Hope it’s a sign of more to come this spring; maybe enough more to break our drought.

Hope you all have a good week, and hope all our sweethearts breeze through all the construction noise there. Glad the coolers will soon be working.

  32. Sayuri says:

I see Gao Gao in the classroom cam. I hope things will settle down by Bear Bonanza later this week.

  33. AC in NYC says:

Great, the cooler is here, thanks Suzanne for keeping us inform. Gao’s looks so baby in the picture above,

  34. AC in NYC says:

I haven’t finished typing, but have pressed the wrong key, it was submitted before it’s ready.
    About Gao, he is cute.
About Atlanta prince, the latest picture of him and his mom is so sweet. I know it’s not high pix, but I just have to save it and use it as wall paper.

  35. Marilyn says:

WOW, what an odd looking view on the camera this afternoon (3pm), it looks like our Panda will fall into a deep “hole”. Can you describe just what we are seeing??? Thanks

  36. pandafan says:

It would appear that the only bears on display today are Bai and Gao. I hope work is progressing well on the installation of the new bamboo cooler.

#24 kathy – I too have been wondering about Fu Long in Schonbrunn. Thanks for your update. I also wrote one of the frequent YouTube posters to see what they’ve heard. I’ll post their reply when I get it.

  37. Pat from Florida says:

Can’t get enough Panda watching. They are so wonderful! I hope that Tai and Su do not have to leave
us this year. I am traveling to Atlanta on Wed to see Xi Lan. I went to DC and saw Tai, Mei and Tian last spring but really excited to see a baby Panda.
The baby elephant is sooooo cute too.

  38. Rose N. says:

Betsy #22 – Yesterday afternoon, we visited the Wild Animal Park to get a glimpse of the two-day-old male elephant. One of the keepers told the large crowd of visitors that the baby weighs 225 lbs. I was so surprised to see the baby walking all around the enclosure following his mom. At times, while trying to keep up with his mom, he would hasten his steps a bit – this was so precious to see. A few times, the little guy would tire and topple over on his side and take a short nap. His mom, Umngani, would coax him to get up with the aid of her trunk. Later, the keepers brought in his sister, Khosi, who is now 2-1/2 years old, to spend some time with her little brother – they were so cute together. The baby would extend its tiny trunk to touch his sister – this was so very sweet to watch. :-)

While all three elephants were in the enclosure, the keepers performed a visual check of Umngani and Khosi. The keepers inspected their mouths, teeth, ears, trunk and feet. Khosi looked so cute as she followed the keeper’s commands. During the check-up, the keepers used a whistle and a soft prod – (it looked like a giant Q-tip) – to give commands. All the while, the baby stood by his mom. After completion of the exam, Umngani and Khosi got their long awaited treats.

The keepers then allowed Umngani, with the baby and Khosi into a larger enclosure, which is adjacent to the main African Elephant Exhibit. Daddy elephant, Mabu, and a few of the other elephants came rushing over to greet the baby. Under Umngani’s watchful eye, the elephants, in turn, touched the baby with their trunks. This was an experience we will never forget.

With every visit to the Wild Animal Park, we are treated to many animal encounters, but this visit with the new baby elephant was extra special.

  39. Bobbie Wood says:

Thank you Suzanne and Ellie and Everyone who write the updates!
To All who have missed Zhen…I hope you looked about 12:30 Pacific daylight time today. Zhen was in her bedroom lying on her back and waving bamboo around :) a bit later, she was sound asleep in the same position :) I did see Gao in the classroom area this morning; he was very busy sniffing all around the exhibit. I’m off to check the slide show of the baby elephant :)

  40. Susan (UK) says:

Is ZZ on C11? I thought it was her because she’s been rolling around being a bit daft. And now she’s fallen asleep in her bamboo. Good thing it wasn’t custard!

  41. kathy says:

Is that our little ZZ i’m seeing on C11 right now (13:45 your time; 4:46 EST)? She’s tiny enough to lay down on the platform and fit perfectly, so I’ll say it’s her :)

Moderator’s note: Yes, Zhen can be seen on C11 today and possibly tomorrow. We’ll try to keep up!

  42. Margaret says:

Rose N thanks for sharing your price-less visit with the elephant family and their new baby at WAP. He is a cute little guy from his photos. As much fun as Khosi had with Punga and Kamile, I am sure she is very excited to be able to spend even more time with her little brother and her mom. Since Ungami is her mother, and Khosi still is young enough that she spends time close to her mom, she will doubtless be around her baby brother even more than Kamile and Punga. It will be interesting to see is she is protective of him more than she was with the others. I am also curious to see how Punga and Muse interact with another baby bull elephant. Do you anticipate any issues with 4 bull elephants in the 12 members of the growing herd? So far there have been 4 males and 3 females (two survived) born in this rapidly growing family. Are any of the other elephant cows pregnant?

Moderator’s note: Margaret, thanks for sharing in the excitement of our newest elephant calf! We’re going to copy this comment over to our Elephant Odyssey Ambassador’s most recent blog so he can read your questions and respond.

  43. Doris from Germany says:

Why the cams has been reduced? What’s the matter with Su Lin? She has no more Cam.
Bai Yun, a panda-old girl of 17 years. If it is not too old for a pregnancy?

  44. kathy says:

Doris #43: They are only temporarily reduced while they build and install a new bamboo cooler – they want to minimize the noise and stress for the pandas. Su Lin is fine and you can catch her on the cam – we’re playing a bit of a game right now to see if we can guess which panda is online as they are moving them around a bit! If you read the article above – it explains what they are doing :)

And Bai is not too old for a pregnancy unless her body says it’s time to stop. There are some pandas in China that have given birth as late as 20 and 22 years old! If she goes into estrus then great! If not that is great as well as she has given us 4 beautiful children and has certainly earned the right to just sit and eat boo if she pleases :)

  45. Doris from Germany says:

    Thank you, kathy, for explanations.
Indeed, I do’nt read the end of the text above, as the translation is some difficult for me. :-(
Now I can understand the situation.
I’m watching San Diego-Panda- Cam for a long time with a lot of fun. :-)

  46. Maureen in Stanwood MI says:

#38 Rose N – Thanks so much for your first hand observations of the WAP baby elephant. :) Watching the elephant cam showed many members of the herd ready to meet the latest addition – I love the way the elephant family works (they will take care of the young, sick, tired & old) – so different from the pandas.
#24 Kathy – thanks for confirming what I’ve read about Zoo Austria & their panda FuLong- they have a completely different strategy in the way they are raising their panda cub .

  47. Fonsia says:

Where is everyone finding the photos of the new baby elephant? Must see!

So far, I’m proud. I’m not having any trouble identifying our pandas! Gao Gao is easy–he’s nicely lumpy. Miss ZZ has a very distinct body shape–her little torso hasn’t lengthened out yet, and I can spot her every time. Her movement is a bit different too. Bai has those lovely ears, and she has such a nice triangle to her saddle. I might have trouble differentiating her from Su Lin these days, but it looks as though Su Lin is off-camera for awhile.

I’m assuming that the reason our ZZ was confined to her bedroom today was that it was too noisy outside in the C-15 room. On Sunday at about 5:00 she just looked so miserable. I have yet to see her really playing and romping since her weaning was finished. I’m hoping that when she’s let out again into a large exhibit, she’ll perk up. Maybe this enforced confinement will be good for her in the long run. She’s always been so spunky and full of life–it’s just her personality–I know she’ll bounce back. (But she needs another panda to romp with and wrestle! I know she’ll meet Su Lin eventually at the howdy gate–but you can’t wrestle through the howdy gate!)

Moderator’s note: The elephant calf’s photos are in the What’s New? section. But please know that we’ve added photos of the sun bear cubs’ first day on exhibit, so you’ll see those first!

Hello panda lovers. I just saw a clip from CCTV on youtube announcing that the eight giant pandas that were sent to Beijing after last May’s earthquake will be going back to Wolong on March 22nd. Go to youtube and search for “Pandas ready to go home.” It was just uploaded today, March 16.

And while you’re on youtube, search for “Panda YIng Hua on Rocking Chair”. It is a hoot!!

Wow!! Our SDZ pandas are really going through a round of “musical enclosures.” Makes for entertaining watching. I’m looking forward to hearing about the boo cooler being set in its place.
