A Tiger Cub’s Day

Mek is the mother of the three tiger cubs.

Do you ever wonder what life is like for tiger cubs and their mother and father? What do they eat? What do they do for fun? I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to witness the tiger behind the scenes.

These Malayan tiger cubs, Jin (female), Menderu (male), and Seri (female), and their mother, Mek, and father, Paka, seem to live very comfortably in their enclosure. And their day starts at the crack o’ dawn!

Adventures in Rhino Keeping

In my last blog (Meet Our New Rhino), I referred to a new rhino, Surat, who would be coming to the San Diego Zoo soon. Well, he has arrived and made a big impression. Soman, who arrived in July, was definitely wound up when first released onto exhibit and stayed that way for about a week. He eventually calmed down and has become relaxed and comfortable in his exhibit. His younger brother, Surat, has not followed the same path.

If You Blink…

….the pandas may have moved around, but not to worry! The keepers have been doing the every-two-week (more or less) rotation of Su Lin and Gao Gao into the right-hand viewing area. This has been done with some of the pandas here at the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station in the past, depending on the bears and the season, even way back when Shi Shi was in residence.

Sound the Alarm!

 elephant calf earflapIt is always exciting to recognize natural behaviors in zoo animals, such as our African elephant herd at the Wild Animal Park. Although our elephants live in Southern California, rather than Africa, they still display behaviors that they would use in the wild. I observed such behavior last week and would like to share with you.
