Hali, what a brilliant idea, and very stimulating enrichment for both Blackie and his audience. Several black bears have been sighted around the city of Richmond VA, and they are warning people to leave the bears alone and let them wander toward the mountains as they probably just awoke from hibernation and are seeking food. Last year one was seen in the parking lot of a local membership club. Today one was killed by a semi-truck on an interstate. When people and bears cross paths, and the people don't let the animals do what their instincts are telling them, disaster can result from the encounter. This was a great lesson in animal instincts and behaviors and proper camping ettiquite. Sorry I wasn't there to see it in person. Did anyone happen to get a video you can put on the website?

What a great idea! I live in Utah and last summer an 11 year old boy was pulled from his tent during the night by a bear. He was dragged into the forest and killed. So sad and unfortunate! I am glad SDZ is taking the time to educate people. It could make all the difference in the world. There have been many bear sightings in areas inhabited by people here in my state. The bears usually end up being relocated or euthanized. Once they get in the habit of foraging for food in dumpsters and camp sites, it seems that they aren't likely to change their ways. We are constantly encroaching on the wild creatures environments, whether in building homes or getting away from it all (camping). We need to take care to ensure our own safety and the survival of these wonderful animals.
