A Thank You from Vet Services

Posted at 1:47 pm May 4, 2007 by Meg Sutherland-Smith

Zoo vet staffI want to thank all who ” granted” wishes from the San Diego Zoo’s Veterinary Services wish list. You are helping care for the animals through your donations. Our department (gathered for a group shot with a sea lion!) works very hard to provide veterinary care for the collection and your support is appreciated. Your donations will allow us to replace some aging surgical equipment as well as provide more comfortable housing for hospitalized patients. The remote monitoring of hospitalized patients using cameras has improved our ability to assess how animals are responding to treatment without disturbing them.

Thanks again from Veterinary Services and the animals we care for!

Congratulations to all of the Veterinary staff at SDZ and WAP. You do an exemplary job of caring for a wide variety of beautiful animals. Your work is rewarding when you are able to help a sick or ailing animal, and to keep those in your care well with preventative health care. It also has its sad side such as the loss of Koza, Mandisa, and Shikari. May the joys overcome the sorrows as you continue to provide world class veterinary care to all your animal friends, large and very small.

Early in my practice- 1958- I worked at the zoo in Birmingham, Alabama. I really enjoyed doing the work. I was even bitten by a small siberian tiger. Actually after checking the cats rear legs, it went across the cage and ran back to me- I was still squatting down, hit me in the groin with its mouth open, lifted its head and the canine tooth cut me. I have fun telling this story. Stuart P. Dowling D.V.M. retired
