Intern Melissa’s Profile

I, Melissa, am currently dissecting a deceased cat in my physiology 1-2 class during my senior year of high school in San Diego. No doubt this is just another memory-making experience that will motivate me during the tough times ahead while working towards a college degree. Seems strange for someone who is in an internship at a Zoo but this cat has helped me learn that there is so much that I have left to learn about biology!

Participating in extreme science activities is not all I do. I have completed my fourth year of field hockey and just recently halted my job at a local pizza shop. Up until the end of this fall, field hockey has been the biggest aspect of my life outside of school. Needing to keep busy, I then began putting my time and energy into my first employment opportunity at the pizza place but now the Zoo InternQuest program will be my newest extracurricular activity.

Of all the events in my high school career, Zoo InternQuest has been the one to which I have looked forward to the most. This is no doubt because of my adoration for animals that probably began when my dad found a small green tree frog in the backyard, which he excitedly showed to the three-year-old me. Since then, I have had too many pets. So many that to count them on two hands would be nowhere near possible. Currently I own the least amount of pets I have ever had: four cats and two dogs.

Even though much of my time is put into caring for these animals, I am still able to interact with my complexly large family. On one side I have my mother, stepfather, and younger sister, and on the other side, I have my father, stepmother, two younger stepsisters, and slightly older stepbrother. Although it can at times get hectic, I don’t think I would be nearly the same person without the much-needed support of my relations. At present, the main thing on everyone’s mind is, ” Which college will you be going to?”Â  While this is the most dreaded question for every senior in high school, I am merely looking towards the future with fingers crossed, hoping someday to hold a career in the animal sciences.

I am on the Zoo InternQuest Careers Team.
