Happy Birthday to Su
Posted at 8:31 am August 1, 2006 by Suzanne Hall
Su Lin’s first birthday is tomorrow, and the Zoo is celebrating by providing her with a custom-made birthday cake. For past cubs, the cake has been an ice sculpture, often with fruit frozen into the layers of the cake. Some enterprising Zoo employees once fashioned birthday candles out of bamboo and added flame-like pieces of yam on top. It is always neat to see what our staff dream up for events such as this!
The party starts at about 8:30 a.m. PST, and we will have a Meerkat volunteer on hand to control the Panda Cam, so you Su Lin fans out there should be able to peek in on the festivities. We are pleased to see yet another panda cub reach its first birthday here in San Diego!
Suzanne Hall is the senior research laboratory technician for the Giant Panda Conservation Unit of the Applied Animal Ecology Division/CRES.
Pictured is Su Lin with her 1st Birthday cake!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SU LIN! I, too, am so very glad to see another panda cub reach 1 year old. I will be very excited to watch Su Lin’s party tomorrow, as I was unable to see Tai Shan’s because it happened on the weekend. I’m still overwhelmed by feelings of such joy as I watch both cubs interact with their mothers and their environment. MANY thanks to all those involved with both zoo panda programs. On another note, the writing talent of both zoo’s authors (Suzanne/San Diego blog and Washington’s ‘daily’ updates) is excellent: educational while very entertaining! Kudos to you.

I can’t wait to see Su Lin’s reaction to her ” Cake.” I am sure she will be cute and enjoy every moment, that is if she will come down from her perch and stay awake enough to enjoy the festivities.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SU LIN!!!! I will be there tomorrow just as I have in the past with the other pandas celebrating their first birthdays. I can hardly wait to see how she interacts with the ice cake and her presents. Thanks for keeping us up to date and informed of Su Lin’s birthday.

Happy Birthday, Su Lin! Have a fun day celebrating your very first birthday. And to Bai Yun: enjoy celebrating your third-born’s big day. You have brought Hua Mei, Mei Sheng, and little Su Lin to these momentous occasions with such great care. You are surrounded by many who are so proud of you and your family. And, Gao Gao, we would never forget you, either!! I hope you get at least a small piece of the yummy birthday treat:)

Happy Birthday, Su Lin, from New Jersey! We’ll be watching attentively to the cam during your party! And we wholeheartedly second Diana’s toast to Bai Yun and Gao Gao, two bears who singlehandedly seem to make panda-breeding and survival of the species look easy! Thanks to SDZ for helping to ensure the survival of this amazing bear!

Happy Birthday, Su Lin! You’re a big girl now…
I just know you’ll have a blast. It’s been so wonderful watching you grow into the little beauty you are now. Hugs to your fabulous momma and daddy, too!
August 1st, 2006 at 5:10 pm
Happy Birthday, Su Lin, Happy Birthday to You!
Hope you have a fun day with your mama, Bai Yun, devouring your cake.
Try to save a piece for brother Mei Sheng and papa Gao Gao, too.
I’m sure that cousin Tai Shan, Uncle Tian Tian, and Aunt Mei Xiang wish you a Happy Birthday and would love to have a piece of your cake, too, but unfortunately it would probably melt by the time they got it.
I saw a cute picture of your sister, Hua Mei, eating her birthday cake from a book I checked out at the library. I also enjoyed watching the videos of brother Mei Sheng celebrating his first and second birthdays and look forward to seeing him celebrate his third birthday later this month.
Thanks to all the keepers and Meerkats for taking such good care of all the pandas and inviting us to Su Lin’s birthday party. I hope you get a piece of cake, too!

Happy 1st Birthday, beautiful precious Su Lin! Hope you will have a wonderful day, with lots of treats and surprises.
Many, many thanks to Bai Yun and Gao Gao, and all the loving, dedicated people at SDZ who have worked so hard to make sure you reached this day. Your sweet face and adorable personality have warmed panda lovers’ hearts and brightened our lives every day. Long life and bountiful bamboo, Little Bit of Something Very Cute!

August 1st, 2006 at 8:00 pm
Happy Birthday, Su Lin! Hope you and your entire family–Bai Yun, Gao Gao, and Mei Sheng–all have a wonderful day celebrating with you. It seems like only yesterday when we were all glued to the panda cam just hoping to catch a glimpse of you—that tiny little pink squirming thing! Now look at you, climbing trees, chasing Mom around, sitting in your little pool! You’re just precious. Happy Birthday!
August 1st, 2006 at 9:56 pm
Will any of the birthday pictures be posted? I won’t be able to watch Pandacam.
Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOU SWEET LITTLE GIRL! We love you!

Have a wonderful 1st birthday celebration, sweet Little Su Lin! I have enjoyed watching you grow over the last year! You truly are one of the cutest (and most special) little black-and-white babies ever, and San Diego is so fortunate to have you and your family here with us. Have fun eating your cake and opening your special presents.
August 2nd, 2006 at 12:07 am
Happy birthday, Su Lin! I can’t be with you but I will be watching you from the U.K. I came to see you in December; I am sure you have doubled in size now! Stay as sweet as you are!
August 2nd, 2006 at 3:23 am
Happy Birthday, Su Lin!
You have given me many hours of happiness watching you grow up. I marveled at your tree-climbing ability and have watched you and your mother during the very tender moments you have shared together. I’ll be watching you in the months ahead and wish you all the best in your future.
Happy Birthday
Thanks to all the members of the Panda Research team that have made this past year possible.

OK, what’s the deal? The web cam is not working. No picture of cub. Is that because you’re preparing for the b-day party?? Help!
August 2nd, 2006 at 6:32 am
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SU LIN!! Can’t wait to see you. Hope you enjoy your special Birthday cake!! And Congrats to Bai Yun for bringing another healthy, happy cub thru!! Thank you so much to the SDZ and its keepers for keeping us updated on her first year and sharing their experiences with us!

Happy Birthday, Su Lin!
It is 8: 17am, and they are still playing in the bedroom.
Come out and enjoy the treats!!
August 2nd, 2006 at 8:06 am
I just can’t stop laughing, everybody that I work with is watching Su Lin attack her cake. She has herself wrapped around the top of the #1 and isn’t letting go. She is just too CUTE, and she is really enjoying her birthday so far. Gotta get back to the cam.
August 2nd, 2006 at 8:13 am
Thank you, Meerkats, for your wonderful camera shots of Su and Moma Bai this morning. The Birthday Girl climbing her cake was a treat to watch!! Just when I was beginning to wonder if either was going to notice the cake, she headed toward it and proceeded to climb up and knock off what I believe was a carrot (to represent the candle). Happy Birthday, Sweet Su. I will be at the SDZ on Aug. 28 and can’t wait to see you, mom, dad & big brother!!
August 2nd, 2006 at 8:46 am
Thanks for sharing Su Lin’s birthday with us.
It was fun watching her climb on top of her cake, play with her name, and sit in her present.
My favorite part was after Bai managed to get the ” 1″ off the cake and Su Lin managed to pull the rest of it over the log and tumble down the hill with it.
Now it looks like she is exhausted and it is time for her nap up in the tree. Sweet dreams, birthday girl!
August 2nd, 2006 at 8:57 am
She and Bai Yun are so sweet together, and she’s an adorable little panda girl. I’m sorry I missed the cake–hope there will be pictures or video!
August 2nd, 2006 at 10:10 am
A big THANK YOU to all the staff for making this a very special day. To the keepers, thank you for taking such good care of our princess; to the Meerkats for the great camera work and all the researchers who do so much to insure the future of our pandas, and of course to Bai Yun and Gao Gao–good job.
August 2nd, 2006 at 10:14 am
Did you see Su & Bai playing indoors this morning aroung 8:25 a.m.? They kept looking at the door as if they knew something was going on and wanted to let the suspense build before they made their grand entrance. Our birthday girl is so self-assured! She attacked that cake with gusto, was enthralled by the letters of her name, and loved using her gift box as a recliner! She seems to know when the camera is on her. Don’t forget to download the beautiful Su Lin birthday screensaver, panda fans!
August 2nd, 2006 at 10:28 am
Happy Birthday, Su Lin! I’m glad you really ” tore it up” on your birthday. Much love, Karen in Pasadena
August 2nd, 2006 at 10:54 am
What a great party! Su Lin sure enjoyed her ” cake.”
August 2nd, 2006 at 10:55 am
Well, I’ve watched the time lapse of this morning ’s festivities, but it was all too fast! Here’s hoping you put the video clip on the website.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SU LIN, you are a big girl now. May you follow in the footsteps of your prolific mom Bai Yun, and half-sister Hua Mei, and one day give us more sweet panda babies like yourself. But for now you are still our little girl and we will continue to enjoy you on panda cam.
August 2nd, 2006 at 11:46 am
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. It’s been a GREAT day for us pandaholics. Birthday party on the west coast. Swimming pool party on the east coast. (Sigh)

August 2nd, 2006 at 2:20 pm
What a fun show Su Lin put on this morning. I took a lot of pictures off of the Cam. Our little one is quite the handful. And mom Bai Yun let Su Lin shine in all of her birthday glory.

Happy Birthday, Su Lin. As someone in Texas, I am proud to have two such adorable ambassadors on both coasts. Gotta love the pandas!
August 4th, 2006 at 10:11 am
Happy belated Birthday, Su Lin!!! I hope you had a very good first birthday!! Thank you to the san diego zoo for letting me view her and all the other pandas on the web cam!! I hope to go see her someday!! You are sooo cute, Su Lin!!!
August 5th, 2006 at 7:09 pm
I love Pandas. They are so cute and adorable. I hope I come back as a Panda in my next life, or a dolphin. Happy Birthday, Su Lin! I’ve been to the San Diego Zoo the first time, and I believe I’ve met her mother, not sure. I just want to hug you, but I know you don’t really want to be handled by a human at all, which is fine by me. Not all animals want to be touched by another human other than the handlers. Take care, Su Lin!
August 6th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
I’m so happy that you enjoyed your 1st birthday celebration, Su Lin. My
first visit to the SDZ last Nov. was just a lovely experience that I am planning a return trip this month!
Can’t wait to see you in person. Have loved watching you and your family members on the panda cam. Your first year has been a delight to witness.
Take care and I’ll see you soon!
August 10th, 2006 at 8:30 am

You look very cute in the picture, Su Lin. I know it’s belated (you maybe more than two or three); but anyways, I saw your birthday cake picture, and you look great! I’ve already got your picture in my personal pic file, but hoping for more.
