WWT: Pagodas and Secret Spaces
Posted at 2:58 pm April 24, 2006 by Amy ParrottThe rapidly changing landscape and effects of massive reform efforts are evident everywhere to the members of the 2006 San Diego Zoo’s WorldWild Tours tour group to China.
In addition to the main objective–to visit and play with giant panda cubs!–one of the places I especially looked forward to visiting was the Chinese-style Buddhist lamesary in Beijing. Once the home of a prince who became the emperor, it is a lamasery of the “yellow-hat” Buddhist sect, established centuries ago and still an active and important Buddhist place of reverence. The seven halls and carefully landscaped grounds are open to visitors who may view ancient sacred objects, light incense as an offering, pray or meditate, spin a prayer wheel, and learn more about the rich and ancient history of Buddhism in China.
Dinner was held in the elegant Temple Kitchen Restaurant in the White Pagoda Temple on the lamasery grounds. Red lanterns lit the way after dark, leading guests to a room decorated with Chinese art and ceramic objects as well as a petal-strewn dining table. The unusual setting helped our newly made acquaintances enjoy an evening that promised that this would be no ordinary trip.
Stay tuned for “Playtime with Pandas” coming soon.
