Katie the Mini Horse

Many of you have already seen us. We’ll take a casual walk throughout the San Diego Zoo’s Monkey Trails and Forest Tales habitat, or Reptile Mesa, or right along the main entrance. I am talking about our morning walks with Katie the miniature horse (shown on the far right with Sugar Plum in the middle and Elmo on the left). As many of you already know, Katie arrived in early February of this year. She has been part of our family here at the Children’s Zoo since then.
I am very pleased to let everyone know she is doing great–really, couldn’t be better! Katie was welcomed by Sugar Plum, a 29-year-old female miniature horse that has been with us for a long time, and by our little ” stud,” 10-year-old Elmo, also a miniature.
Elmo was quick to welcome the new girl. He was excited and, oh so very friendly (wink, wink–I think a little too friendly) to which Katie was quick to inform him (using one or two hooves) that her purpose here is to be loved, admired, and petted by all the children that come to visit every day. Elmo learned quickly.
All three of our horses are walked daily, usually in the morning. If you see us, please come and say hello. We may not always be able to stop; sometimes the horses feel the need to continue trotting. So, if I can’t stop please do not take it personally!
Katie was not used to stopping for children to pet her in the beginning, but she quickly adjusted. She lets everyone touch and photograph her while staying cool and calm. We’re so proud of her. Please stop by soon–we’d love to see you!!

I loved your account of Katie’s meeting with Elmo. As a former breeder of horses, I know that nothing teaches a young ” stud” manners faster than turning him out with a couple of no-nonsense mares. A few swift kicks or forefoot strikes and suddenly he’s a perfect gentleman! Katie is adorable!

Sweet!! And just so cute. What a fun little story – I’ll be on the lookout the next time I go to the zoo. And what about Elmo… certainly can’t blame a guy for trying. Hey big guy, next time remember the flowers… wink, wink!

Hi Lety. Ever since your blog a while back I’ve been hoping to catch sight of you with one or more of the horses, especially Katie whom I’ve not yet met. But so far no luck. I’ll keep trying, though. In the meantime, many more thanks for keeping us up to date. Your blogs are delightful!

I’ve been hoping for an update since your first mention of Katie. Thanks for including a picture, too! Glad Katie’s adjusting well to her new life at SDZ. Give them a pet from me on the East Coast.
