Tiger Cubs’ First Exam

Tiger CubLast week the Indochinese tiger cubs had their first physical exam up at the San Diego Zoo’s hospital. They were both anesthetized so that the vets could give them microchips for identification, vaccinations, and tattoos for institutional identification. They also went through a deworming procedure and had several X-rays taken.

The vets were especially interested in the X-rays of the cubs’ teeth. The cubs’ dad, Awang Relak, came to the San Diego Zoo with a very serious dental problem which took many surgeries to correct. We were all concerned that his offspring might inherit this problem, so I started checking the cubs’ mouths for tooth eruption beginning at four days old. When their baby teeth started coming in, I was able to measure and record the growth of their canines and any new dental eruptions on a daily basis. I continued to do this until just under three months of age, which is when they started getting a little bit too feisty. With that information, and now the current dental X-rays, we are feeling pretty confident that Mata and Rimba don’t have their dad’s dental problem.

These two are the cutest. I watch the video clip that you have of them. Watching them is very exciting. I hope to hear more about them in the future. Keep up the great work and thank you for all the video and updates.

Very interesting, very informative! We sure appreciate all your work and also giving us a ” behind the scenes” idea of what’s going on with these animals–we’re very far from San Diego, so this is the next best thing for us! Thanks again….. and don’t be envious of the panda keepers for the attention they’re getting ….. tigers are forever, too! (We HOPE!)

Bridget, what a delight to have your blogs to read along with those for pandas. I’ve seen the cubs, and they are so delightful. I can’t get over their beautiful blue eyes, though I’m sure they will become tiger golden brown in no time. What a wonderful job you and your fellow keepers do! Thank you so much!!

We just returned from a 26-day African safari. The cubs look adorable and we plan to visit them next week. We have been looking forward to this since their birth. Thank you so much for providing the blogs.
