During my visit with the Panda Team after Xiao Liwu’s exam (see post Panda Exam: Behind the Scenes), I had a chance to ask some of the questions panda fans sent in and have compiled the answers here. The best news? Xiao Liwu is doing great! He measured 34.6 inches (88 centimeters) from nose to tail, and his tail is 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) long. His size compares to that of sister Su Lin at this age. His claws became hard after just a few weeks and are now quite sharp! There may be another exam or two, depending upon Xiao Liwu’s willingness to participate. So far, he has been the most cooperative of the cubs, which is why we’ve been able to do so many exams with him. Once the exams stop, he probably won’t have one again until he is moved to another facility or is old enough to breed; any required exams will be done under anesthesia. Yun Zi hasn’t had an exam since his cub days.
And what about Bai Yun? She is the picture of health as well! Her appetite is in full bloom, as it usually is this time of year. She is not exhibiting any symptoms associated with arthritis or any other condition one might associate with an older bear. Keepers were surprised to learn that some panda fans consider her to be “cranky” with the cub, as they see her as a content mother bear.
Xiao Liwu’s continued weight gain indicates that he is getting enough milk from his mother. Although our keepers don’t witness nursing bouts, it is obvious the cub is well fed. He is weighed twice a week, and the Panda Team keeps an eye on his growth curve. The cub is eating apples when he can get them; he has to be fast, as Bai Yun likes apples, too! He also has been nibbling on the hard leaf eater biscuits, and keepers are considering soaking them a bit to make them easier for the cub to chew. In China, young bamboo shoots arrive in the springtime, just when young cubs are ready to start sampling it. Pretty neat, eh?
Now, about those falls. The substrate in both the exhibit and the garden room is comprised of lomax, rather than dirt. Lomax is much softer than dirt, so when cubbie falls, and he will, it’s not on concrete or hard-packed dirt. When he falls, he may land on his feet, his side, or his cute little bottom, but panda cubs are born stuntmen: they know how to fall and roll to prevent injury. None of our cubs, including Mr. Wu, has EVER cried out after a fall. NEVER. If he were to cry, it would sound like a loud chirp. A fun story: there was a bird in the area that made a sound similar to a cub’s distress chirp. Every time the bird made this sound, Bai Yun would rush to Xiao Liwu, who was usually sleeping in the moat, to make sure he was okay. Bai’s ears are always on the alert, perked up for any indication that her cub may need help.

I diligently noted Mr. Wu’s measurements for nutritionist Jennifer Parsons. The green door leads to the cub’s bedroom; the door to the left opens into the garden room.
Keepers describe Bai Yun’s parenting style with Xiao Liwu as “more relaxed” and say she was much rougher with Yun Zi than they have seen with Xiao Liwu. If he needs her for help getting out of a tight situation or to nurse, the cub gives a soft cry. She has not yet dunked him in the pond, which has a few inches of water in it. When he is older, he may see Yun Zi or Gao Gao when passing through the tunnel system that connects the various exhibit and bedroom spaces, but he will most likely not be given access to look at them through the howdy gate, as males are not tolerant of each other.
When Xiao Liwu and Bai Yun go off exhibit for the day, they spend their time in the garden room, sun room, and bedroom areas, and usually sleep on the platform in the garden room. Although some fans have asked if an infrared light can be set up for nighttime viewing, we think that for now we’ll give our mother and son some privacy. Maybe for the next cub….
And how does our newest cub compare to his siblings? Keepers say Xiao Liwu is unique in that he is so comfortable in his surroundings and handles new situations very well. He is a tolerant, confident, and independent young rascal who really seems to enjoy the company of his keepers. He is curious and playful and has already started target training (touching his nose to a target for a reward) much earlier than his brothers and sisters. This is probably due to his love of apples and ear scritches from his keepers, which are used as the rewards! During my time with the Panda Team, I could tell that he is well loved and well cared for, by both his mother and his keepers. What more could a little guy ask for?

Dear Debbie,
Thank you so much for the beautiful report. Your words bring him closer to our hearts. And the tale of the bird chirping was just precious. You are a wonderful writer.
Debbie responds: Thank you, Darlene! I’m at a loss for words.
I am sad that you will have to stop the cute little exams, but i understand why. Will we still be able to see them on cam? I cant imagine a day not checking on them. Is little sausage staying here, or is he leaving at a certain age? I hope you can help , thanks LInda Todd
It seems being born in the Year of the Dragon is proving true for our newest cut. Can’t wait to see him next month.
Do we have any idea when Yun Zi will head to China? I loved watching him. He was good to the camera.
Moderator’s note: No news yet.
Will the zoo keep the older pandas, once they stop breeding and will China send a new pair of pandas,or let the zoo keep Yun Zi and send a mate for the panda?Watching the bears daily always puts a smile on my face and in my heart.
I’m right there with you Patti. I cried so hard when they took both Su Lin and Zhen Zhen. It was like someone took a part of my family away. These pandas are my joy.
How fabulous to learn all his about both Bai Yun & Xiao Liwu. Interested that Bai really listens out for hm calling if in trouble. Also interested in the fact that Target training has begun, allbeit in a simple form. Thanks also for the pics. Nice to see you in the flesh and cute Xiao Liwu plus his foot.
another excellent blog Debbie. I have learned so much about Panda’s since visiting the Zoo back in August. Now I just hope I get the chance to see them again in the future sometime.
You forgot to mention well-loved by his thousands of worldwide fans! Thanks for the interesting and informative report.
Awesome blog, Debbie. Thank you for taking the time to ask the questions and compile them. I’m a bit surprised that the keepers feel Bai Yun is more relaxed with Xiao Liwu than she was with Yun Zi; and the story about the bird noise was just too funny
It’s truly a joy to watch this little guy as he is so confident and independent.
Here’s a video from early Monday morning of Xiao Liwu climbing the tree and encountering the tree guard (which he seemed determined to outwit!). He doesn’t fall, and this really shows how confident, curious and strong he is. I continue to be impressed by his tenacity!
2013-02-04 Xiao Liwu: NOT for the Faint of Heart
http://youtu.be/z-984VIo8Fc
I was tuned in during the episode and at l:25 I clicked off because I feared for him! Your title is so apt! NOT for the fair of heart
But I’m still grateful that you captured it all.
No womder why Little Wuzzie is tired mid-morning. I am exhausted watching him. He is so brave & adventurous. Thanks so much for the video & the warning!
Though I haven’t watched Wuuu as much as Yunnie, I am surprised that Bai hasn’t been that determined to pull him down off trees very much.
With Yunnie she was always making sure that he didn’t climb too high at a young age.
As always a great video, but it is kind of you to give the “fall”, “don’t fall” code. It allowed me to pick the right time to watch. Last Friday I thought it might be soon that he finally tried that left limb of the left side tree, but I was thinking 2 or 3 weeks, not days! Are you encouraging his speediness?
I think you are providing us with many more videos than ever before, and I am sure everybody joins me in expressing thanks for you time, talent and devotion, thank you…love grammmie
For those of you who don’t have stomach for the video (wich is exellent as usual; I for myself wouldn’t miss it) there are some pictures of the same exercise on my Flickr-site.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristina_a/sets/72157632689525118/
I join the above to thank you, DoxieMom19, for sharing your wonderful and lovely videos. I think Mr. Wu is extremely adventurous, confident and independent, compared to other cubs I have seen. Although it might seem Bai Yun didn’t seem to care for her young cub so much, but I noticed she glanced when he fell. The bird chirping incident seemed to prove the fact that she really did care !
Thanks to the San Diego Zoo for the panda cam and all the reports; they are lovely to watch and read, I enjoy them immensely !
Thanks Doxiemom for giving me a heart attack when watching Wu climb that high!!! My computer has been down for awhile and so being able to watch the clips of our little guy is sure great. I miss watching him and Bai everyday. Thanks again. He has really grown. He sure shows how curious he is and how likes to climb higher the better. Oh my.
Thank you for this newest report. I don’t doubt for a moment that our “little gift” is getting the best care ever – from mom and his keepers!

Thank you, Debbie, for those answers. It is always great to learn more about pandas, especially our very own Xiao Liwu and Bai Yun.
Thank you Debbie for the facts and information you shared about our little Wu Wu. I just love this little gift to pieces!!! Everyday, he puts a smile to my face as I see him on the panda cam. Like I have said the last time, I wish Wu Wu can stay a panda cub forever. He is 101 % cuteness.
I love watching Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu ( Mr Wu ) but because of the time difference it’s not always possible to see them. Mr Wu has grown so fast I can hardly believe it. He is the first Panda cub I have seen from birth so he will always hold a special place in my heart. I would love some day to be able to afford to go and see them but for now I will have to content myself with watching them on the web.I send much love to them and the keepers who look after them.
Amanda–to keep up with the “doings” in the cub enclosure, and sometime his big brother’s and dad’s apartments, watch for any time Doxiemom and others post links to their videos they have uploaded for us to enjoy. I an in the SDZoo’s area I still end up missing out by sleeping during their active times. I get a very early morning peek sometimes, but without the den in use I was not seeing much in motion, except foe the various videos offered. Enjoy…love grammmie
Dear Debbie,
My brother says he wuvs you and this report on him.
Panda hugs,
Yunz
Debbie responds: Thanks, Yunz. You da bear!
Brilliant post !!!!! Really made me laugh.
We all wuv you too Yunz !!
Thank you Debbie for the reassurance about Wu’s many tumbles.
xxxxx
Could his confidence, tolerance and adaptability be attributed to the touching/petting sessions the keepers started to do daily when he was really young? Or is this just his personality?
I wasn’t around for the other cubbies, but the more I read about his daddy the more I see Little Gift is his fathers son.
PS: Awesome article. Thank you!!!
Thank you Debbie for this update on Mr. Wu. Also, thank you keepers and all others who take care of the pandas. Target training for such a young panda is amazing. I fed the pandas in Atlanta and the keepers demonstrated many targets that one panda learns.
Looking forward to visiting with the pandas and especially Mr. Wu in March at the panda convention.
What is the “panda convention” she is referring to?
Debbie responds: See post Panda-Monium 2013.
I am just so appreciative of your report! You educate and reassure all the aunties and uncles who love and admire the whole family of Giant Pandas. By the way, the picture of Mr. Wu’s footsie is precious!
Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf
Couldn’t have said it better myself. From one Debbie to another, superb blog and thank you for all you do for us pandaholics. You are a wonderful lady!
Debbie responds: You are most welcome, Debbie!
Thank You Debbie, loved reading your story/report.
I do have a question(s).
Will Mr. Wu ever be put in with other cubs to play with or will be on his own like Yun Zi? Or are there not any other cubs near his age to play with?
Debbie responds: Xiao Liwu is the only panda cub we have right now. His brother, Yun Zi, is 3 1/2 years old, much too large to play with.
thank you Debbie
Thank you Debbie! It is wonderful to hear about our little gift and his mama. You did an amazing job of asking everything!!
When Bai was using the den, was the first room she entered as she left through the den door the room you call the ‘bedroom’. Is the bedroom the room we see through the open doorway between the garden room and ?????
Debbie responds: Yes, the den opened directly into the bedroom. You can see the bedroom door (it’s painted blue-green) in the photo above. The garden room connects to the sun room, which connects to the bedroom.
Debbie,
When Bai yun is on the platform in the garden room, from time to time we see her trying to look through the window of the door. Is that a room on the other side and Bai Yun is trying to get the keepers attention or is that a corridor where she can hear people walking by?
I will understand if for secuity reasons you are not allowed to answer this question but I wonder about the probability of Bai Yun attracting someone’s attention when she does that.
You did great obtaining answers to our many questions. Thanks very much! You can do it again any time!!
Debbie responds. You’re welcome, Danielle. The window in the door next to the platform gives Bai Yun a peek directly into the keeper kitchen area. Bai Yun is often interested in what her keepers are doing!
like all fans, thank you for a interesting blog. My 1st panda I saw born was Yun Zi. But I see the difference between the two boys. like most human kids. I had no doubt that Bai Yun would take care of the boy. she is a great mother to her cubs. Love her to death.
lu
Debbie, thank you so much for this wonderful report. You have spent so much time in your explanations and willingness to reassure us! Xiao Liwu is so smart. I am struck by how cautious he is when climbing to those heights. So much fun to watch.
I think he got more cautious as he had falls. Not that he was “chicken”, but smarter the next time he tried……love grammmie
I couldn’t wait to read this. And after I did I was so happy. The keepers do a great job. And Bai Yun is the best mommy ever. As for our beloved Mr wu what can I say his super cute, and so lovable. His the best cub ever!!!!
Your update just confirmed everything I knew: Bai is just an awesome Mom and Mr. Wu is the smartest, cutest, sweetest, most cuddly stunt panda in the world. At least until the next cubbie is born. LOL
Debbie, you are wonderful as well. You have helped us all for such a long time, it seems. I’m so happy you were able to experience the exam and ask questions. Yea, for you!
The story of the bird was adorable, Just shows how wonderful Bai is as a mommy. Thank you for the wonderful blog! I can’t wait to see Xiao Liwu in May
What a fantastic report, Debbie! You have grace and presence of mind that provides all of us with answers but also serves as the lubricant to keep our blog rolling along comfortably. That’s a major challenge. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you get a special valentine from little Wu! (Oops…did I give anything away?
I also enjoyed reading this,Debbie. I felt as if you were reading it to me.
. Mr Wu is definitely a chill bear. He also loves his keepers very much. I think Bai is a little more rough with him but he comes back for more whereas Yunnie didn’t as much. Xiao Liwu is a brave little Panda Boy. One my Bucket List is to one day visit & go to the conventiom in SD. I would love it! I cannot wait to see Mr Wu in the water. As I recall Yun Zi did not like it much at first. Thanks everyone at SDZ Pandahouse. Thanks DM for great videos! <3
Yun Zi and big brother Mei Sheng did object to being dunked in the pool by H I H Empress Bai Yun……with the way Mr. Wu. Is breaking barriers I expect to tune in one day to find him floating on his back in a pond. I bet he will be the youngest of Gao Gao’s boys to start dating too. I don’t know if it is nurture or nature, or just good luck, but he seems to be an exceptional panda both with his mom and his well trained, (by him), NannyKeepers. It may be hard for him to surprise us in the future, but I somehow think he will. Giddy-up, momma, Wu rides………love grammmie
Thank you for the update on Bai and Mr Wu. He is a very independent little guy. I think that is so cute that the bird imitates the cry of Mr Wu and Bai being the good mother she is comes running to make sure her son is okay. It shows that Bai is a great mother bear.
So even though as you say males are not tolerant of each other, would Yun Zi and Gao Gao realize Mr Wu is of the same family?
Debbie responds: Possibly. We can’t know for sure.
Can someone please tell me the time that Mr. Wu comes out each morning so zoo visiters can see him in person? I thought it was 9:30 but then I read somewhere it might be 9:00. I want to be sure and not miss him when I finally get to come. Thank you
Debbie responds: Currently, viewing hours are 9 a.m. to noon.
Just want to add my thank you to all the rest of my fellow Wu Wu fans thank yous!!! He is so adoreable and makes my heart sing, he truly has a “gift” and of course still number one in the cuteness category! Keep up the good work Debbie!! much appreciated!!!
Debbie, thanks so much for a very informative report. Learned a few things I didn’t know — always a good thing. You looked so “locked in” in the picture — a natural. So glad you had this opportunity to enjoy Wu up close and personal.
He growing to fast he has big paws and well get bigger. It won”t be long he eating on his own.
I have found San Diego zoo one day whilst babyminding my two little grand daughters. I just googled Panda Cam and came up with your wonderful zoo. I am so hooked!! I do worry when Little Gift falls but youhave explained well how he wil be ok. I retire in two yers time and youare on my list for a visit having never considered travelling to America before!
Debbie responds: We look forward to your eventual visit, Sheila!
Debbie I just wanted to say thank you for the great blog! It was nice to get some answers to the question about our cute, smart, adorable little Mr. Wu! He is my first cub to watch growing up. It has been so great to take this road with all of the other panda lovers! Just like when the cam is on Yun Zi sometimes he acts shy when people are taking pics of him. He is very funny to watch. And today got to see the great Gao Gao in his pond today splashing around. That was funny to see since he is on his back most of the time eating his boo! And Bai Yun what can I say she is just great! Thanks again
Julie it is really great you got to see all four of our Pandas in residence, you are quite lucky, and, I suspect a good planner…..love grammmie
thank you for being diligent about tracking down answers to our questions. out of all the cams, the panda viewers are “spoiled” b/c the new blogs are so frequent.
off topic, on the cam, Bai is resting on the climbing structure of the garden room. this made me laugh b/c Bai is always doing something unexpected. Xiao Li Wu went to join her and he climbed up a vertical trunk. he is strong.
Thank you for your informative answers.
Here is a scene that I ‘ve never seen in western zoos, it is a zoo keeper went into a cage to have direct contact with an adult panda, but this time it took place in Adelaide Zoo, they called it ” Panda Contact Session ” :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7mUluTZVI0
JPXI, great video. Up until now I have only seen babies use the drinkers as face, feetsie, and Toushie baths. Love grammmie
Debbie, Does that sort of contact ever happen at San Diego Zoo with a fully grown Panda? It was nice to watch.
Debbie responds: No, our keepers use protected contact, meaning there is always a safety barrier between panda and keeper.
Thank You for an interesting link. It seemed rather precarious to me.
That’s really risky on the keeper’s part. The Chinese keepers I worked with do not allow themselves or volunteers unprotected contact. This practice is also followed in the US zoos.
They seem to have great trust but I suppose you can never be 100% sure with a wild animal. I visited Adelaide last year. I really wish I had went to see the pandas now
FYI everyone… Mary from Brooklyn knows what she is talking about, she has been to China and even KISSED a baby P. Bear!!!
Wow!
I remember when Funi first came to the zoo and Simone used to play games with her – but on the other side of the grill. Brave girl! But good training for a blessed event.
The cubbie just found a way to get around his mother in the garden room tree – she was blocking one of the main limbs. Then she shoved him to the ground. I hope he goes back up there and gives her a little bite on the behind for doing that to him.
I’m glad to see that the cubbie’s okay after his momma shoved him off the tree limb to the ground. I just got a cute postcard shot of the cubbie’s head popping up from behind his momma’s head. I’m sure he’s climbing on her while she’s trying to eat to get her back for shoving him out of the tree. Good for you cubbie. I know why his mother pushes him around like that (to toughen him up), but it sure isn’t fun to see. So I like it when he comes right back to bug her. By the way, Debbie, thank you for the two blog entries about your visit with the cubbie. You are stronger than I am that’s for sure. If that had been me so close to the cubbie, I would have talked to him, telling him how cute he is, and would have given him a hug, just like panda keeper Beth did. I do have one question. You mentioned that Yunnie probably won’t get another physical exam until he is moved to another facility or until he is old enough to breed. At what age are male and female pandas ready for breeding?
Moderator’s note: Get great info, such as age of maturity, about pandas and other animals in our new San Diego Zoo Animals website.
I have been searching for this for an hour, remembering a short question, not realizing that it was at a longer comment section than I remembered. After reading the question and almost trying to recall everything correctly, I did an experiment. I went to the blog search box at top right, just UNDER the photo of Bai Yun giving a class in bamboo to one of her babies, and entered these words. “Giant Panda Breeding Age” of course without the quotes. It brought up a page of blogs to check in. The next time I have a general question I am going to try that route (when I remember) and see what comes up….I can always still ask the question. Of course I am so in love with reading this blog, new and older ones (archives can be reached at the bottom of the page) and even older comment sections have things important to be said. Be sure when looking for “panda info” to start with the word “Giant” to avoid getting less correct information, especially on the web and other search engines. There will never be a lack of posts to read, but I so love some of the things I have found poking around older blogs, and clicking on the photos below the blog, above comments. I keep a notepad handy, because there might be 2 or 3 and as soon as you use your .”click” they change, and even using the back arrow does not bring them back. I jot down names of blogs I want to see so during down times I have plenty. Once I have the name I just enter it as it appeared under the photo, in the same search box mentioned. There may even be one called “how do we turn off grammmie”, except I am surely not worthy of a blog….love grammmie
I just checked out the site Debbie provided, it is lovely, and the photos are fabulous! Love grammmie
We just saw Mr. Wu fall from a tall tree. Is he ok? It looked like a long way down.
The camera looked for him for a moment and the switched to GAO GAO.
Thank you for this wonderful blog Debbie. You bring it all to life, and it makes me smile. : ). I am very happy to hear that Bai is completely healthy and not suffering any of the maladies of old age. I think she is the most beautiful panda on earth! What seemed a bit on the cranky side a while back has now transformed into a kind of bear sense of humor. She handily knocks him overboard and then she peers down on him like, ” hmmmm Wu, what’s going on down there?” What once concerned me now seems a bit hilarious. She is amazing, as cute as Wu is, Bai is even more amazing. This is my first long stint of panda watching and I am captivated. Thank you all!
My opinion still is that she is the biggest kid on the block! Love grammmie
I sure agree with that, Grammie.. Bai can be as playful as any of her cubs
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/2010/11/26/panda-surprises/
I had not considered Bai’s behavior as cranky. but sometimes I have wondered if she could be pre-senile b/c there were instances where she pushed Xiao Li Wu but then when he fell, she really looked surprised (like Did I do that?). maybe she only intended to give a warning(???). in any case, I will believe the keepers when they say she is acting normally.
now that Bai is a bit more independent of Xiao Li Wu’s care giving, I find that she is as much of a comedian as Yunnie. maybe he learned from her.
Dear Debbie,
Thank you so much for your report on Xaio Liwu!! I have learn a lot about this little guy thanks to you!! I am so happy that you got to be at the exam and ask so many interesting questions! thank you again, I can’t wait to see him, Xaio LIwu is just so cute!!
I can barely stand to watch when Bai Yun comes near Mr Wu on a high perch. I just witnessed her push him off and it seems cruel to me. In my opinion, as a mother, she is a little mean/cold. What mother (animal or human) just pushes a baby off and lets them fall. As I say, I’m not a Panda but it is very hard for me to watch this. I love watching Mr Wu by himself but when he is with his mother, I hold my breath..not good. JMO
When you get a chance, you should watch the other play sessions that Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu have. If the only time you see them together is when she pushes him off, then it will definitely make you feel Bai Yun is mean. Go find youtubes from DoxieMom to see different types of interactions.
As for pushing, I’m sure Bai Yun has experienced falling from heights herself and has seen her other 5 kids grow big and strong. Growth has not been stunted by the falls. He will fall on his own from heights that are higher as he likes to climb. If Xiao Liwu was hurt, I’m sure he will vocalize to let his mother know.
Remember this part from the blog above ,,,
I watch them play but she is not playing when she pushes him off the high perch..
Thank you for sharing, Debbie! This was very heartwarming to read, and just confirmed for me that those head rubs and chin scritches when he was just a little guy really seemed to make a difference in his temperament! Bai Yun’s mothering is top notch and I think she is doing a marvelous job teaching him how to be a big boy bear.
Thank you Debbie. What a wonderful writer you are. I hope this is not a dumb question, but there is something I am very curious about: So much care is given to naming each panda. We all refer to them by name – so do the handlers call the pandas by their names? If so, how do the pandas respond? Do they recognize and respond to their names in any way?
Debbie responds: Thank you, Robin. The pandas recognize their name and respond when someone they know uses it, much like a pet dog or cat might.
Sulin responded when she saw her familiar Panda Keeper who was trying to get her away from a precarious position high up in the tree that worried the on-lookers and the staff
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/2009/06/19/decorating-diva-version-40/
Or
when Mei Sheng’s Panda keeper, Angie, visited him about a month after he went back to China, she called Mei and was a little bewildered but remembered Angie and came to her side.
http://blogarchives.sandiegozoo.org/blog/2007/12/27/a-happy-reunion-and-new-friends/
They are really very intelligent creatures that will capture your heart!
First of all Thank You!! for all the updates, blogs and pictures of Mr. Wu!! I can’t imagine a day going by that I don’t watch the panda cam to see what he is up to!! I wondered though since we r talking about Mr. Wu taking a tumble or fall….several days ago I was watching the panda cam and Bai Yun was sitting at the top of the platform and Mr. Wu climbed up the tree log to the top. When he reached the top Bai Yun pushed him and he fell down. He got right up again and climbed to the top only for Bai Yun to swat at him and make him fall again.
I know Bai Yun is a very good and loving mother (I have watched her take care of Mr. Wu from the very beginning!) and was wondering if you knew why she would do this? Is it just playing with him?
Anyways, thanks again to you and all the wonderful zoo keepers who take such good care of these beautiful animals!!
We human moms can learn a lot about mothering from the panda.
She cares and nurtures, but does not smother or spoil. She allows him to learn!
Thank you so much, Debbie, for asking all the right questions and reporting back with all the right answers. I especially like the photo of his claws because it shows one of the reasons that he can hang on so tightly in those high scary places that he enjoys climbing. I wonder if Bai Yun also has trouble watching him being so daring up there. Maybe she just waits for any little chirps that he might make if he were actually injured. Thanks for the reassurances that she is the best mommy in the whole world.
Where can I learn more about the process & purpose of target training?
Moderator’s note: You might enjoy reading a previous post, Yun Zi: Favorite Cues
Debbie, someday you will retire, or move to a higher post, etc. How could anyone else live up to your care of this blog. It may take quite a few to replace someone like you…….what will the Zoo and us commenters do without you? Now I ask you, is that fair? Thank you for the great work and blogs, and now we need, the next time Gao or one of his kids has to “be under”, a photo to know what the webbing looks like. It is a lovely feetsie!!! Love grammmie
Fabulous post! He is an adorable bear and so loving to the keepers! Truly a precious gift!!
Great blog entry, Debbie! It’s good to know that Master Wu is a super genius, so what he lacks in size, he makes up for in smarts! And I agree with the nannykeepers, Bai Yun is not a cranky mother. She is a strict mother, but extremely loving to her cubs. She is the epitome of a wonderful mother bear, and Xiao Liwu is fortunate to have such an extraordinary mommy!
Debbie, where shall I start! first I want to thank you very much for the wonderful report you wrote concerning the pandas, Mommy Bai Yun and her adorable precious growing baby cub Mr. Wu as so many people call him…….I still call him to my family the darling “Snuggle Puff ” (Little Gift)……. We watch him on the web cam daily…
You are a wonderful writer and you have given so much information about the pandas…..I like the tale about the bird when he is chirping and Bai Yun checks on her baby Liwu…..(thinking it’s her baby)!!!!!!!!! how precious is that!!!!!!
I have noticed lately how very brave and confident our darling cub Liwu is and he is strong and agile with his climbing ability and going down the bare trees…. and up on the rocks, he is so brave…..He sure is adventurous…..I love watching him and his mom play together….then when he climbs on her back that is so funny, or tries to keep up with her…………..
It’s always so refreshing learning about pandas especially the darling “Little Gift”…..I LOVE that baby panda….Thank you keepers and everyone who take care of the pandas…..Mr. Wu or Liwu or Little Gift is super cute , just adorable…….I love his mom and his family too!!!!!!!!
Debbie:
Is the Panda Research Station staffed 24 hours a day so that all the bears can be monitored even through the night? I suspect so
Thank you for your detailed blog.
Debbie responds: Only when there is a young cub to monitor.
Loved your report, Debbie, thanks for sharing! Great “inside look”.
I have yet to see Bai Yun dunking any of her cubs, and I am a bit bummed that I missed the opportunities. On one hand, I imagine that it would be funny to watch Bai Yun giving her child a lesson. On the other hand, I can just imagine the cub “saying”: “No!! No more please, mommy! I am sorry, mommy! I won’t do that again!” Definitely not fun to be on the receiving end of such act.
If Bai Yun starts dunking her cub, and someone captures on a video, I’d love to see it!
Yunnie didn’t much care for the water. Bai used to push him right in to teach him how to handle it I guess. But he’ll never be much of a water bear.
Thanks a million Debbie for sharing so much details about our Xiao Liwu with us. Thank you thank you thank you and many thanks.
It is interesting to note how many offsprings Bai Yun’s prolific parents Pan Pan http://pandanews.org/the-pandas/308_pan-pan.html and Dong Dong http://pandanews.org/the-pandas/358_dong-dong.html have between them. Maybe somebody might have the patience to create a family tree.
The Great Pan Dynasty, a period of joy and happiness as well as significant growth in population.
So Bai Yun and NZ’s Tian Tian are half-siblings?
Yes. Same father different mother, I believe.
Yes, they share a father, Pan Pan. Pan Pan was a very prolific breeder, siring dozens of offspring. Many of the overseas pandas are somehow related to him (although I don’t believe Zoo Atlanta’s are.) Bai Yun was born to mother Dong Dong and Tian Tian was born to mother Yong Ba, so Tai Shan and all of the San Diego cubs are cousins.
Yes, and Mei Xiang (National Zoo) and Lun Lun (Zoo Atlanta) have the same father — Lin Nan — so they are half sisters. That’s why they both have those beautiful puffy faces.
There are family tree charts at the Pandas Live On website. Scroll down the right hand column to “U.S. Panda Family Charts” — charts are there for the four zoos in the U.S.
I know that in some circles the fluffy cheeks of the Eastern U. S. A. are considered a sign of beauty, but my First Lady Panda was Her imperial Highness Empress Bai Yun and I fell in love with her lovely fur that says she just left the Fur Salon and Spa for Lovely Panda Ladies, or FSSLPL. Even her babies, when adults, have her beautifully sculpted face fur. Her sister pandas are lovely, by all means, but she was Miss Panda Universe! Just ask Gao Gao about that……love grammmie
Hi Betty,
Andi from PandaNews here.
I’m looking at ways of being able to show a pandas family tree.
Either for the site or as an Android app.
One of the problems is that pandas have multiple mates. So how do you show a pandas Half Brothers and Sisters etc. It gets very complicated.
I’m currently thinking about just showing the tree through the mothers side.
Any ideas very welcome.
Andi
Truly wonderful! As a member of the Mr. Wu fan club, it is so nice to be reassured (once again) that Bai is not a Mommy Monster and that our Little Gift is doing so well. I was actually able to watch him stretching high, high, high up in the tree today without having to look away.
Oh and by the way Mr. Wu, we made a donation today for your snow day (one for each of us in our family so a total of 4!). We have lots of snow where we live, so want you to enjoy it as well!
Moderator’s note: On behalf of our panda family, we thank you and your family, Kim!
Hi Debbie
Thank you for your lovely and informative blog. I watch this little boy every day. I feel so close to him after visiting last June, I will see you all in June and early July. Please also thank the volunteers who man the cameras for the great job they do
xoxoxoxo
I just made a donation for the Panda Snow Day. Will an announcement be made on the blog about the date of the Snow Day, so that we will know when to watch? Also I asked a question earlier today about the age that male and female pandas are generally ready for the breeding process.
Debbie responds: Thank you, Kristin. Yes, we’ll be sure to let everyone know when snow day is once the funds are raised.
So good to know that our bright little Snugglepuff is so healthy and well, and to hear good news about Bai’s health too.
They certainly wrap their way around our hearts, don’t they?
And how cute is that footsie? Just makes me want to tickle it!
Dear And Highly Appreciated Moderator!
After this blog, if not earlier, I really think You should have touched Mr. Wu! If anybody, You have truly earned it.
Thank you so much Debbie~~The information you provide is always so interesting to read! I am confident that the interaction between Bai Yun and Wuzi — whatever she does, is for the purpose of teaching him to be a Panda. When she pushes him away as she’s eating, it actually makes perfect sense that she would do that. Aside from being bad manners, if he lived in the Wild and approached another animal like that, he would be attacked. I’m convinced there is panda reasoning behind everything she does–after all, Wu-zi continues to show us how intelligent, adventurous and daring he is for little guy! Also, a big thank you again to DoxieMom–I watched the Donut & Mommie video! It was hilarious to watch Bai unexpectedly make herself totally comfortable in his little tube, tapped his head as if to say “that’s a good boy” — as he did his best to wait patiently until she moved. It’s now one of my new favorites!
Off topic I guess, but is Bai walking laps out there right now? (Is she trying to shed that baby weight to look perfect for Oscar season?)
Like Yun Zi and Gao Gao, Bai Yun does circuits around the yard in anticipation of new bamboo and cleanup by the keepers.
Thank you Debbie for the excellent blog, very informative. You certainly are an asset to the SDZ family.
Herrow Debbie,
I was so shy that day when I saw you that day. Thank you for being there and telling the unkas and aunties the nice things about the wu self.
Wu Wu has some questions too. May I ask:
a) Why unkas and aunties cannot kiss me? I want to kiss them, hee hee.
b) Can I have huggies every day. I fink it ill help me grow up well, hee hee.
c) Can you please tell Mama to NOT sit on MY platform and doughnut?
d) I wike approws. How can I hide them from Mama?
e) Where I can buy roses for Valentine’s Day? Hee Hee Hee *BLUSH*
Thank you so much.
Wots of wuv,
Wu Wu
Debbie responds: If you do what your nannykeepers ask you to do, you will get LOTS of apples, my young friend!
I love this!
Me too…love grammmie
Dear Debbie,
I always do what the nannykeepers want me to do, I fink. Hee Hee. OK I be good boy……Sometimes I want to play wid them too, hee hee. I wike my twaining now so I will get many approws, yeah!!!
Panda Hug,
Wu Wu
OMGosh!!! my knees are so weak, I fell on the floor, I am in love, I want to be a P. Bear!!! I do not want a cure!
What was that rule again… oh yea, I think it is… Don’t kiss the P. Bear! Oh wait, that only applies to the Panda Team!!! not me!!! he he he
For those that missed the activity in the Garden Room late yesterday, here’s one more Monday video :
3:45pm – 4:45pm: Xiao Liwu joins Bai Yun on the platform but he wants to play (he had a very lazy day on exhibit). Bai Yun then moves to the climbing structure, but her shadow follows her. Later as she’s eating, he goes after her ears … and off he goes to find amusement elsewhere
2013-02-04 Xiao Liwu: A Persistent (but adorable) Pest
http://youtu.be/xzdM2TO2o0I
Just a caution: if you having issues with Xiao Liwu falling, this may not be the video for you.
Bai is sure patient with Mr Wu. I have a hard time watching the videos when He falls. But I feel better when he comes right back for more. What a great mom.
Thank you very much, Debbie for a very informative and entertaining write up! Sure is nice to know lots of details of the charming little one and follow his growth and watch his outstanding personality unfold.
I wonder if they will show a photo of his training. Every single bit in his life is so very interesting to know
.
Thank you to the Panda Team for taking such good care of him.. And very grateful to Doxie Mom for all the wonderful videos!
Thanks so much, for another great story. What part did I like the most, the whole thing. I could have read this all day. I was watching him yesterday morning, and it was funny watching him climb to the top of the tree branch, and reaching out to the leaves. Yes, at times it looked scary, but I feel so much better now knowing what he can land on, when he falls. I liked the ending of your story, when you mentioned, “the next cub”. I really really hope we will have a chance to watch another one. I totally love the close up of his back paw, as we would never have a chance to see that, because he never stays in one spot for very long, and I have never seen a close up of that before. I would love to tickle it.
In this photo You can see his little paw while he is sleeping.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristina_a/8448571978/in/photostream
kristina I just visited your Flickr page again…..just adore the new photos you put up……are those from the web cam or “in the fur” visits??? Love grammmie
Thanks Kristina. How cute he was sleeping there. Yes, you can see his paw pretty good, and it is sooooo cute. Everything about him is sooooo cute.
Debbie, this post made my day – and you truly have a gift for writing well.
I’m flying out to see this angel in a couple of weeks and can hardly sleep from the excitement
Debbie responds: Thank you, Kim. I’ll let Xiao Liwu know you’re coming!
Debbie are you one of his iPaw mini pals now too???
Loved the picture of Xiao Liwu and his keepers. He looks small, yet huge, in comparison to them. And the pic of his paw! OMG, I want to nibble on those little toes!
About two years ago, the Atlanta zoo had a baby panda named Po. When he was about Wu’s current age, he would go up his climbing structure and his mother Lun Lun, would routinely yank him down to the ground. This happened over and over! Little Po would immediately get up and either chase his mom around their morning room or climb up the structure again. I think this must be a form of play/learning. Maybe it helps with a little bear’s coordination. Bai Yun is a great mother.
Thank you for this wonderful post, Debbie. Keep writing!
Nice to see and read you Caroline, but I must tell you—please stay clear of his feetsies—I am the one with the panda foot fetish!!! It started with Gao, later it got to Yunnie then it seemed the whole world knew i had fallen for Wu Wu. love grammmie
Yes, those little toesies are scrumptious! What do you suppose they smell like? I also have a fetish for rumps! I love animal hindquarters and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Ya gotta love the whole animal, right?
Hello everyone!
This is my first time posting but I have been reading everyone’s comments on Little Wu since he was first born.
I can see there are many other people all around the world that love Little Xiao Xiao as much as I do. I’ve been watching him every single day since his first week of life and can’t get enough of him. He is so adorable and amazing!!
Debbie, you’re blogs are wonderful and very informative. You write really well. It’s almost as if you’re sitting right here talking to me and not just me reading it. You definitely have a gift with words and your love for Little Wu is very apparent. That makes your blog posts even more wonderful to read. Thank you for sharing your experiences with all of us. It makes us feel like we are right there sharing in it with you.
I also want to say thank you to DoxieMom as well for all her wonderful videos. There is so much cuteness I would have missed out on if not for the time and energy put into making and posting these videos. So, thank you very much for making me smile and keeping me up to date on Little Wu’s recent adventures.
Very nice to finally meet everyone!
Dawn in AZ
Debbie responds: Welcome, Dawn! And thank you for your kind words.
Hello Dawn, it is nice to meet you. We hope you are around for a long time and get to know our blog/comments participants. We have some wonderful creative folks who built families of our solo pandas, and teach us something new while we enjoy ourselves. We even have some who teach us a few foreign words, customs, all kinds of stuff. Once you enjoy a bit of their things and the photos and video links you will find yourself working through some of the previous blogs to find more. There is a great deal of learning in the comment section too…enjoy….love grammmie
Well… Hello Dawn!
It is about time we get to meet you! I think your first post is wonderful, great insight and I second it!
I just love that there are people from around the world that we get to know and talk back and forth to, such as Cynthia in UK, she keeps us up on the beautiful swans in her area, Maureen keeps us real, Doxie Mom is a gift too, my work keeps me so busy and I would miss so much without her… and then we have… Grammmie!… personality plus!! so much great history information and oh so much fun!! just love her!!!
Certainly don’t want to forget WHAT brought us all here… our beloved Pandas, I call them P. Bears! with the best Panda Team around who have an enormous amount of patience with us, including our Moderators, particularly Debbie, who endlessly and repeatedly answer the same questions over and over!!!
There are so many wonderful people here, I could go on forever. So enjoy all of them and keep posting, let us get to know you too! I apologize for this being long, but you deserve a special post for joining us… thanks.
P. Bear Hugggs!
Beverly
This was a very well-written article! Great job!
Debbie, you have a way of making me very green with envy; I want to be a panda keeper someday just so I can perhaps get a glimpse at the pandas I so dearly love. I have a random question. When Xiao Liwu falls asleep in his strange little positions, does he snore? I have a cat that snores when she covers her nose with her paw, so I was wondering if the same goes for baby pandas.
Debbie responds: I don’t know if Xiao Liwu snores, but I remember a story about Bai Yun from long ago when one of our security officers checked on the pandas at night and heard Bai Yun making a very strange sound. He contacted the on-call vet, who came rushing over. The diagnosis? Snoring!
I think we have all heard various pets snore, probably most animals with nasal passages, and/or sinuses can snore…..I sure can…love grammmie
Debbie, you brought such words of delight to all we panda lovers. Mr. Wu is such a treat to watch and reading your information, just took me from Kansas to San Diego. Thanks for the trip. My panda watching started with the birth of Yun Zi and I was hooked like so many people. I will be watching those little gifts for years to come and I will have so much knowledge thanks to people like you. Thanks especially about the “fall” info! Sometimes, I have to close my eyes at that little cub turns upside down and does his tree antics. The whole SD Zoo Panda team is top notch and that is proven by all these wonderful bears wandering about. Thanks for sharing!
“If he were to cry, it would sound like a loud chirp. A fun story: there was a bird in the area that made a sound similar to a cub’s distress chirp. Every time the bird made this sound, Bai Yun would rush to Xiao Liwu, who was usually sleeping in the moat, to make sure he was okay. Bai’s ears are always on the alert, perked up for any indication that her cub may need help.”
what a lovely story
What was the scent on the platform that Mr. Wu was enjoying so very much this morning?
Moderator’s note: No scent, just apples and leaf eater biscuits.
Debbie good job with the feet and claw question. The way they climb trees I was pretty sure the claws had to be sharp and strong.
Debbie….Liwu is cute but guess what….so are you. We all love your sweet personality, helpful answers, kindness and generosity of your knowledge. If that is you in the photo…I assume it is…you are very pretty. I am glad you posted that picture, now I feel like we kind of know to whom we are typing.
Debbie responds: Thank you, tanda. That is indeed me! I was very focused on correctly recording the measurements.
I second that!
And I third…… Or whatever number I get there….love grammmie
Dear baby panda cub Liwu, My husband and I are coming back to see you this week-end, I can’t wait to see you again and your beautiful Mommy and gorgeous father Gao Gao, Maybe we will see your brother too! if he isn’t sleeping and hiding!!!!!!!
Thank you again moderators, keepers and everyone involved with the pandas, thanks for everything……….
Have a WONDERFUL TIME ! ! ! Love grammmie
It makes me feel warm and fuzzy when Bai taps her back foot.
YES! Me too — thought I was the only one. Great thing about this blog, makes you realize you’re not unique. LOL
Thanke Debbie..love this little guy!
What a wonderful blog! Thanks Debbie for sharing!
Just had a little look at our cubbie, thank goodness he has those claws, as he is using them to have a good scratch, must be very itchy today! Mummy is just lazing about on a branch!
Debbie, maybe Mr. Wu is so comfortable with his nannykeepers because of all the effort they put in when he was smaller to make him comfortable with them. All those pats and strokes and skriches paid off.
at 12.33 PST, the keepers enticed Bai-yun to go to one of the tunnels (???) and the door closed. I hope she is Ok.. maybe getting a Mama checkup???
I believe they were cleaning the exhibit and Wu stayed behind on the hammock where he was slipped an apple slice by one of his nannykeepers.
Jane you are right, it was cleaning and fresh food time. I saw a NannyKeeper slip him a leaf eater biscuit right away. Somewhere in the last 2 blogs/comments it said they were thinking about softening them so he could manage it better. Love grammmie
I know Bai Yun is one of the bears they are using for the hearing studies they are doing. Maybe it was time for a hearing-data collection so they took her into the back away from distractions.
I do not know for sure, but I think while busy cub raising H I H Empress Bai Yun retires from study, and resumes between cubbies. Life for her right now is very busy, and besides she is very smart and picks right back up on her studies when she gets back to her private Spa, is that right Your Imperial Highness??? Love grammmie
You got that right, Grammmie. I have no time now for studies. Yunz is doing some studies now.
Love,
BY
Is Our baby boy Panda ok today? It is unusual tosee him layaround so much. I just hope he is ok and not injured from the falls from yesterday. Thanks for keeping us updated.
Sometimes I wonder if he has a work out before he ever gets on exhibit. Did you see Doxiemom’s video of Bai pacing in her garden room early one morning. Wu Wu made trip after trip back and forth, following her into the bedroom, back out into the garden room, and up to the fence. Sometimes he met her coming as he was going! That day, he came out and was seemed to snooze quite a bit!
He climbed and chewed for seemed like hours today. I started gazing before noon, and he was barely still for over 2 hours I think. He was in motion at the start of my viewing so I don’t know how long total. When Bai was called off exhibit he started to follow her off the jungle gym, until he heard the door, then reversed himself on the hammock to watch her leave and his NannyKeeper to arrive. I broke to send a message, when I got back he was moving up and down again and enjoying himself…..love grammmie
Nice cam action today, I checked in at least 1/2 hour ago to find Mr. Wu on his hammock mouthing his greens. The cam later showed Bai laying on the top napping. Something got the attention of both of them, so continued watching. Bai suddenly got up, made her way to hammock. While she was there I suddenly thought of her on his donut there and realized toys and structures don’t need to be baby proof, they need to be H I H Empress Bai Yun proof, since she tries everything. When she started to decend again I saw Wu begin to follow, then stop, turn around and watch the small door open, then Bai continue to it and inside. He just seemed to know it was time to charm the NannyKeeper who gave him snacks! That is one smart panda we have there.
Great close ups and long shots from the cam operator, and cam went to Yunior’s Keebler roof were he was doing some chewing. Thank you for the treat! Love grammmie
Mama check all toys before I can play wid them. She says it is safer for me so that the Wu self does not have to see Mr Dr Vet.
Wuv,
WU WU
Hey Debbie~~
Just made a donation of 3 for the Panda’s Snow Day.
Am wondering if after donating do you get a confirmation / receipt??
Am waiting for a return phone call from Sara at the zoo about this.
Been watching precious Li Wu Wuuuu. SO Adorable ♥
Was So happy Mom Bai didn’t come up there, take his boo away from him and push him off.
Wondering why Mom was taken inside?? Hope she is okay.
I LOVE YOU, Wuuu Wuuuu ♥~~
puppygirl
Debbie responds: Thanks for helping toward a snow day for pandas, puppgirl! Sara can answer the receipt question better than I.
I donated a few days ago for the snow day. I received an email confirmation of the transaction. Hope this helps!
Lol. I am not the Sara you were referring to, but I have an answer just the same!
Sara M~~
LOL!! Thanks for your post!
It is Greatly Appreciated!! ♥
puppygirl
HEY Sara M~~
THANK YOU for your post
It does help. How soon after your donation did you receive the e-mail confirmation?
It’s been about 4 1/2 hrs. since I made mine.
Just put in another call to Sara and left her a second voice-mail.
Hope to hear from her soon. Just want to be sure they get my donation and I will receive a conformation.
Thanks SO much~~:)
puppygirl
I don’t quite remember exactly how long it was after I sent the donation, but I’m pretty sure it came right after. I hope you hear an official answer soon. Have you checked to see if it went into your spam mail? Just a possibility.
Sara M.
Hey Debbie~~
Thanks So much for your reply.
As I posted to Sara M, I have a second voice-mail in for Sara at the zoo.

Was just on the pandacam, and Mr. Cuteness was showing off his cuteness again! Xiao tries soooo hard to find different ways to get off of the little platform and down the tree trunks! He looks so cute just wriggling his way around those branches, sometimes being on his back with legs flying on a branch. Adorable alert!! BTW, who built that little platform for Xiao?
More panda news from Pandas International from my Facebook page: the keepers at Bifengxia has moved Tai Shan to Lover’s Lane in preparation for his chance during breeding season! About time!! He’s 7 years old, and he deserves to be a daddy to a baby panda cub! Hopefully, we will hear about his connection to a panda lady very soon!
That’s it for now. Going back to the pandacam!!
Chari Mercier
St. Pete, FL
Hopefully very fertile news Chari, that will be a proud moment. love grammmie
Tai was my first (& still favorite) Panda. NZ needs some good news if he can be a daddy
Hi, Maureen! Tai Shan AND Su Lin were my first 2 pandas to watch on NZ & SDZ pandacams in 2005. Yep, NZ does need some great panda news after what happened with Mei Xiang’s cub late last year. Oh yeah, we’re hoping!!
Chari
Hi Cheri,
Thanks for the update on Tai Shan going to Lover’s Lane… great news, sure hope he gets a sweetie so they can have cubs!
I am so busy at work, I only get over here on the weekends now, so quite a bit gets passed me, so you are one of THE ONES I look for to get the latest and best news. Thanks so much.
P. Bear Hugggs,
Beverly
After quite a while of action by Mr. Wu, including a high level almost fall, he is napping on the hammock. He tried eating, napping, could not find just the right place for a while. The near miss was when he was on one log, lost footing, and caught 3 paws on next log/branch. That is nerve wreaking. I assume that Bai Yun was eating elsewhere. Love grammmie
For those of you curious about the differences between the brother panda cubs, check out the blog “morning ritual for Yun Zi” I believe from January 2010. Reading that really made me understand how precocious this little guy is. Gets a lot from smart daddy Gao Gao, I suspect. Now combine that with Missy Bai’s teaching talents and her incomparable charm — makes him a winner! I bet Yunnie is just as smart — maybe more careful than the little gift who goes where angels fear to tread.
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/2010/01/25/morning-ritual-for-yun-zi/
HEY SC~~
Maybe that’s why Li Wu Wu was pretty quiet today and didn’t do a lot of “high climbing”!!!!
lol He got tired of “bouncing”!! Sure hope so cos every time he “bounces”, my heart skips a beat!!
Hope that’s why and not b/c he got hurt from a previous “bounce”
Such a precious baby♥
Geezzz, I L.O.V.E. him ♥
puppygirl
Debbie, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the questions and answers and loved the anecdote about the bird! Thank you for being our eyes and ears as we all watch Mr. Wu grow; you do a marvelous job!
What do you know about the newborn takin born at Panda Trek last weekend? Will there be a blog post about him? I saw him the other day with his mother, and he really is just too cute.
Debbie responds: Thank you, JL! And takin calves are pretty cute, aren’t they? He was born on Saturday, February 2, to mom Summer and dad Lian. At one day old he weighed 20 pounds (9 kilograms). He does not yet have a name, but keepers report he is doing great!
I remember watching Summer when Wushi was born a few years ago and she’s a great mom. I’m excited to watch this little guy grow up as well!
Are there any photos? Would love to see them but can’t get to SDZ (yet!)
Litte Wu sleeping peacefully but sure would like to tickle those ears. And his widdle foot is adorable. What a treasure.
J L, there is a website called ZooBorns and they had some adorable pics of the calf and her mother. they also had pic of our cutie Mr. Wu from his latest exam, I look a couple of time a day to see new pics
Thanks for the great info, Barbara. I just went to that site and loved it! But of course Mr. Wu was the cutest of all.
I’m a huge ZooBorns fan and even have the app on my phone! I hadn’t checked it yet today and was very excited to see our new baby takin. He’s adorable!
Thanks for this!!
Wrote this just now as I was watching our little guy.
Who is that intrepid climber high up in the trees
Just our Xiao Liwu, hanging out, enjoying the breeze.
Cute as a button, our little bear, what a joy to watch
as he rambles on adventures there.
Six months old now, truly a “Little Gift” for us. He’s an
adventurer, his curious nature a real plus.
We watch him day to day, eager for his next moves;
he does not disappoint, he grows and improves.
Ever faithful we watch, our love and affection showing.
Little Gift’s life is a lesson for us all to be knowing.
Lovely, love grammmie
Grazie! Hee Hee. I wike the pome.
Wuv,
Wu Wu
OMG!!! Too cute, that put tears in my eyes. If you just came up with that, you should do it for a living. That was really good.
Thanks so much for the great blog! Lots of insights to Bai & XLW. Love the funny bird story
Mr Wu has been so quiet the last couple of days. I wonder if he is sore from falling and being pushed off high perches. I have watched long enough to know he is not as active as usual. I hope he is ok..Hopefully the keepers and vets will check him out soon. Thanks
I hope so, too!!
There have been 5 or 6 falls (or being pushed) off the platform in the last couple of days!!
That precious little darlin’♥
Such a little body that can get hurt and bones that can fracture.
Oh no Mr. Wu!!! Stay away from the poo!!!!!
I have a question…does a panda’s poop change when he starts eating solids like a breastfed human baby?
Moderator’s note: Certainly.
Thank you so much to the SDZ for the pandacam and all they do to keep us informed. I think I pulled a fast one on my kids (adult kids). For Christmas, I talked them into a family vacation rather than gifts. You guessed it, we are going to San Diego so I can visit the Pandas. I am so excited. I’ll be there next week Mr. Wu and family!
Welcome! I be waiting for wu!!
Wu Wu
Is there a good reason Bai Yun pushes him off the platform like she just did. Mr Wu had been asleep , was awake and moving around. She climbed up and moved him over the edge and let go..Why does she do this. For you who study Pandas; have you seen this with her other cubs and other mothers of cubs.
Thanks
The Atlanta Zoo has a mother panda, Lun Lun, and her two-year-old boy, Po. When he was about Wu’s age two years ago, Lun Lun would push and pull him off the climbing structure in their morning room. Sometimes it was in play, and sometimes there was no apparent reason! Po never got mad, though. He just came right back at her for more! I loved watching him grow up and now there’s this little Mr. Wu to watch.
I just watched momma Bai, urinate by some treats, or at least I think it’s treats. Looks like slices of some kind of fruit, right by where they exit from the indoors. I take it she is not happy with that choice of yummys, or she doesn’t want Mr. Wu to eat any of it. Did I see that correctly? I know I saw her urinate, just not sure what it was, as far as the food. What does that mean?
Kathy and all as far as the pacing this morning – I don’t think those were treats. I was guessing it was Wu-poo as Mom’s poo was just outside the door as others have commented how he likes to mimic her actions. And I took her to be adding to her pile of it – not just urinating! And yes it was adorable poor exhausted Wu tried to climb and fell right down. I’m not going to get anything done on my day off today am I?
I am hoping the moderators can clear up what we both saw on the ground. I thought their poop would look different, since they mainly eat bamboo. Kind of like how cows and horses eat mostly hay, it looks fibrous. I didn’t even imagine Mr. Wu, having any fibrous look to his poop at all, because I didn’t think he was eating anything yet. Well, it would just “poop” me out, to have a day off, and just get to watch panda cam:):):)
Bai Yun will sometimes urinate in any corner, even if there are treats there. But some of her fecal does come in different colors (red, green, yellow) so it might look like treats but is actually old feces. If she decides to urinate on her food, we are not sure why she does that.
9:30 am central time 2/8. Mom is pacing like crazy. Mr Wu is hungry. Seems like Mom is hurting from behavior. Someone please check them out.
Poor Mr. Wu, he’s been following momma, back and forth, as she is doing lots of pacing, and he is really getting pooped. It’s funny to watch, but then he climbs up the little tree structure, just right outside of the room where they come out, and he looks like he was going to curl up for a nap, but falls out of the tree. I know it’s not very high up, you can tell. It’s funny to watch him go back and forth, trying to keep up with her, but he must be thinking, wow, it is really tiring being a panda baby.
Most of the bears walk around or pace in anticipation of breakfast. We can only take care of so many animals at a time, so some of the animals have to patiently wait their turn. We don’t typically feed Bai Yun until closer to the time she is supposed to be on exhibit at 9 a.m. There are many days where the pandas do not have their favorite bamboo at each feeding, or the quality might be low. They are very picky eaters and only they can tell us if they like the bamboo that day.
Why does Bai Yun pace so long in the morning from the enclosed box to what looks like a wire gate? If their food is all out in the am she just seems to ignore it . I’ve noticed Yun Zi paces also. Is that some kind of panda behavior? It was noted in another blog Bai Yun can see keepers in the kitchen if she stands up on gate. But if food is out, is there another meaning? The cub just gets worn out following her its pretty cute. Thank you for any answers to my questions.
Dear Debbie,
I just finished reading your wonderful report! WOW, I believe you just out did them all, it is perfect, you did not miss a thing! I love the cute bird story, I think I witness one of the times I saw Beautiful HIH Bai looking down at Snugglepuff asleep in the moat curiously!!
I vote that you go to ALL the exams from now on, you give us all the info and I am sure this will put the worried hearts to ease.
I have not read any of the comments yet, I will in a minute, but bet anything you great report is appreciated so much by all!. Your report should go into the Info area about Pandas, it is that good. Love it!!
Thanks so much… P. Bear Hugggs!
Beverly
Debbie responds: You’re very welcome, Beverly. I was thrilled to be able to share this unique experience with panda fans.
I just saw Bai Yun pus Mr Wu off the metal platform..He was trying to get closer and she just pushed him off. Not away, off..Why does she do this..I feel so sorry for this baby Panda. He needs his mommy and she pushes him away..I hope he is ok..
You mentioned about Bai Yun now not dunking him into the pond. Well I noticed she did this the other day. Is this a sign of exasperation (he was chasing her tail again) or does it happen to every cub at some point? Its amazing how she could swing him around with her grip on his neck. She also occasionally just stands over the top of him…..another lesson or a suppression technique?
