Pandas start out as very tiny, helpless individuals, unable to thermoregulate on their own. Their eyes and ears are sealed closed. Because they only grew in utero for about 50 days, many of the cub’s biological systems are not fully developed at the time of birth, and the cub needs many weeks of postpartum growth before it can see, hear, and thermoregulate. A panda cub would die without the diligent care of its mother, and her behavior is finely tuned by millions of years of evolution to ensure the survival of her young. It may look like love, but to a bear, a mother’s behavior pattern is more simply defined as a necessity.
The cubs grow rapidly. Xiao Liwu, so far the smallest of our six cubs, has increased his body weight approximately 25-fold in his first 175 days. Small as he is, he far outpaces human growth patterns, in which the average infant increases its body weight by only about 3-fold in the same time period. Body weight is not the only area in which a human comparison doesn’t hold: his physical development has also proceeded well along a bear-typical pattern. At less than six months of age, Xiao Liwu can fully explore his exhibit. He can climb to the bottom of the moat or the top of the den structure. Soon, he’ll be scaling the heights of the trees in his space.
To endure these climbs, pandas must be capable of falling and shaking it off; I’ve seen youngsters fall from the top of 40-foot trees in the enclosures of China’s Wolong Breeding Base, only to bounce, roll, and shake it off. Our trees don’t approach that height, and Xiao Liwu will be able to withstand a fall from them with little repercussion. He won’t be the first of our cubs to bounce.
As Liwu has grown, his relationship with his mother has changed. He no longer needs her regular attention, as his fur and body fat afford him the protection from the elements he needs to deal with cold or damp. He no longer feeds every two to three hours, so his mother need not worry about providing him access to her mammary glands so frequently. Even so, this growing baby needs an increasing quantity of milk each day, as his body and brain need fuel to develop. Bai Yun must meet his growing nutritional requirements while attending to her own. At this time, Liwu is focused on exploring his new, interesting life outside the den, and Bai Yun is focused on eating for two.
In the wild, a panda mother who did not take seriously the need to consume copious amounts of bamboo would risk the life of her cub and perhaps herself. Bai Yun is not in the wild, of course, but her behavior is constrained by her evolutionary past, and she takes her feeding time seriously. Do not be alarmed if you see her resist the cub’s attempts at social play while she feeds, or if she blocks him from access to her food. It is her job to eat. If he is getting in the way of her getting her job done, she will let him know. It may appear to the human eye that Bai Yun is being stubborn or unkind, but to a bear, she is just taking care of business.
Bai Yun does make time for play with her offspring. Social play with pandas, and with all bears, can look quite rough. These animals are equipped with claws and teeth that appear menacing when exposed. But exposure of teeth does not mean Bai Yun is growling at her cub (she has, not once in her years in San Diego, ever been noted to growl outside of a social encounter with an adult male). It is simply her version of a “play face,” a well-documented aspect of social play among mammals. It looks intimidating because we are human, and we are interpreting her behavior through a human lens. But Liwu is better able to read her play signals. What’s more, please recall that the Panda Cam offers no opportunity for you to hear the play sessions. What you don’t know is: play bouts are typically silent. No squalling or complaining from the cub means he is content with the play session. Bai Yun is not hurting him; he is instead getting something positive out of that interaction. Reading the signs through a bear lens lends itself to a different interpretation of this play than a human lens can provide.
Bai Yun has raised five cubs to the sub-adult stage with great success; all indications are that Liwu is on a healthy trajectory as well. We have no indication—not one—that this cub is not thriving. His weight, like some of his siblings, has plateaued at points. Yet the overall weight trajectory is on the increase. His behavioral development is strong, even advanced when compared with some of his siblings (Yun Zi comes to mind). He is content and relaxed. And Bai Yun is in excellent condition, maintaining a weight above 100 kilograms. Everything suggests that things are going well for Liwu and his mother. Reading the signs through a bear lens, our staff couldn’t be more pleased with our pandas’ progress.

Thank you Suzanne for this most informitive blog, I hope that this puts to rest the fears that Bai is not a good mother. If you saw the cam about 20 minutes ago they would have seen Bai keep Wu from falling, that is a mothers love at work..
I saw Bai Yun try to keep Wu from falling..very touching. I have a question..since the door is closed to the den, where do these special Pandas go for shelter from the rain? I saw Bai Yun pacing and go to the door as if looking for shelter in the rain..Thanks for all the great info..
Moderator’s note: She was most likely impatiently waiting for the next bamboo delivery. There is a bit of shelter in her current exhibit, but Bai Yun doesn’t mind the rain. If it started really pouring, a keeper would give her the option of coming inside.
It looked like it was raining constantly all day..enough that there were puddles..but I’m just a worried mother bear..I guess..Seems they would need a dry place to go..BTW. she had Bamboo..ha Thanks
OM, I hope Mr Wu is ok. Bai Yun ‘let’ him fall off the roost..She had hold of him then just kinda let go and he had no where to go but down..geez, Momma, ya ‘posed to hang onto that baby boy..
Good to know that baby pandas are designed to bounce, as i watched little Xiao bounce around on the top of that tall tree. Only to have that small branch fail and Xiao take a long drop to the ground.
This little guy is the cutest one ever! Even challenging Hwai Mei. Awhile ago it was mentioned about a panda event in March for the first 50 people who responded. Is there any room left?
Thanks for all the information. I wondered, do all the pandas eat with their left hands? When and how do they clean up the outside area; ie; debris, feces, etc.?
1:30 eastren time and Mr. Wu ust took fall # ? from the tree! He sure is a dirty boy today! I see another baph in his future!
Guess the fall took the wind out of his sails for awhile cause he headed for the moat. Looks like a nap before the baph.
Thank you for this extremely informative post! We regular viewers of Panda Cam are fascinated by everything you can share with us about Bai Yun and Mr. Wu and are nearly as excited to read about them as we are to watch their antics.
Thanks for a great blog! It is hard not to attribute human feelings and responses to Bai and her cubs. She is a wonderful mom and is so great at ‘taking care of business’. It is also hard not to look at the little ‘gift’ and not think that it would be fun to just hold and cuddle him, claws, teeth, and all, but he, also, is ‘taking care of cub business’! Thanks again for the great look through ‘the bear lens’!
It was one of the best blogs, It gives you the insight of how bears survive the wild, and won’t think that mom is cruel.
Very well written and informative Suzanne, thank you. It sets me at ease to read this.
An awesome and very informative post giving us a unique perspective! Thanks Suzanne!
Perfect post! Great information — really, really interesting. I’ve been hooked on the Pandacam since the very beginning — and learned early on that Mama Bai knows best. It’s amazing watching little Mr. Wu — he seems utterly fearless and very tenacious… bound and determined to get where he wants to go. Thank you again for the privilege of watching these remarkable animals — and helping save them from extinction.
This blog gave me great insight into the Panda world. Thank you Suzanne for the information that covered so many of the Panda lovers sect questions. We are grateful for the excellent work that is being done with the Pandas in San Diego.
Good Morning,
I was watching the cam about 10:15am this morning. Mr. Wu had climbed out to the very tip of the top branch and was doing all sorts of contortions out there. A couple of times he was hanging upside down barely holding on. I was nervous and changed to another screen. About 5 minutes later I went back to the cam and there he was down at the bottom of the structure. Watching him made me a true believer of his climbing skill!!! Still made me very nervous.
Carmen
What a great post, Suzanne! Thanks for helping us put things into perspective. I’ve caught up on Suzanne’s posts throughout the years and find them very educational. I highly recommend them to new comers to this blog who have the time. Also, I hear that Suzanne has given great presentations at the annual panda-moniums. I really do hope I can make it to the panda-monium one of these years!
I love watching them, and have learned so much starting with Yun Zi. These are the most incredible bears and Bai Yun is a incredible mother bear. Thank you for the insight into the bears behavior, it does explain a lot. I love reading your posts!!!
Thank you for the interesting and informative post! It is great to hear that Mr. Wu is thriving, and Bai Yun, too. We were fortunate to visit the zoo this past weekend and see them interacting. Mr. Wu is SO CUTE!! Please continue providing us a special look at these beautiful animals
. Thanks for all you do!!
Thank you for all of that pertinent information!! It is good to have a reminder that though they are adorable and special, they are bears and will behave as such.
That being said, I will be glad when our little Mr. Wu becomes even more skillful climbing those trees. Thanks for letting us have a window into his world!
Thanks for the info. I know we all try to put human thoughts and emotions on them so it is good to have this information. When Mr. Wu fell today I about had a heart attack but then he shook himself off and went on with his business. Tough little panda. The Panda Cam is the BEST! Thanks for the cam.
An excellent post as usual, Suzanne Hall. Clear, concise, patient, deliberate… What more could I ask for? Thank you very very much for your efforts to help us understand panda behavior and to make us aware of how different pandas are from humans.
Thank You so much for keeping us all in the loop about Bear Behavior, this is something that a lot of people are unaware of, so make assumptions about the pandas with human emotion attachment, which we all are, attached to these bears as if they were our own family. I have been in San Diego since ’04, so I have gotten to witness Bai Yun and her cubs and you are so right, she is doing what is best for her and for Xiao Liwu, so we trust in that and in all of you. I so enjoy watching the changes each day, week, month and year. I am so lucky to live here, be a member of such a great organization and have the opportunities that I do to be around these wonderful animals. Micci
Thank you so much for this blog. It was very informative and questions were answered that I have been thinking about over the last several days. I absolutely love to watch the cam to see upclose and personal the growth of Liwu and the bonding she has with Bai Yun. The care the giant panda are getting at your zoo is top notch and just by reading the blogs you can tell the staff is so dedicated and caring. When there is so many bad things going on in this crazy world this is a wonderful outlet to view. Pretty soon I’ll be viewing many peregrine falcon cams across the United States and hopefully see many iyases being taken care of by these terrific parents. The falcons like the giant pandas are wonderful nuturing parents. Nature is a beautiful thing!
That is good he become a bear so he can learn to be on his own.How to live and eat. Some poeple keep bear as pet and I don”t like it is not right. They need to a bear not pet.He is so cute
Thank you Suzanne for this informative piece of information. I hope this puts all worried mind to rest, so they can enjoy SDZ’s gift… a view into the world of the Giant Panda’s life cycle. I trust SDZ and Bai Yun completely, knowing all of you at SDZ do know your business and will not allow poor care. Again, I appreciate this opportunity you have provided.
Ouch! That was some fall this morning! And, it did not seem to slow him down for more than a moment. He is one awesome little panda!
Thank you Suzanne for the insight thru the bear lens,it gives me a better feeling knowing what is happening is perfectly natural.Thank you for sharing thru the cam this wonderful experience.
I was wondering when a panda leaves this location and is sent back to China, they don’t go into the wild do they?
Moderator’s note: China knows that our pandas have not be prepared for life in the total wild. However, we were honored to have a former cub, Su Lin, selected to live in a large, “semi-wild” enclosure for a while. You can read more about it at Su Lin: No Worries.
Su Lin was upset at the change to China for a few days. She found that hangng on to the top of the new cage wqas soothing. was soothing. The change is very difficult and SDZhad a friendly member of their staff there to soothe their fears. Ihope youn cn find newsy bits about Su Lin;s choosing of a mate for herself. Estrus proved successful but Su did not understand that she had a baby. or two-(onewas stillborn). Try to find the areas on Pandas Live On where it describes her habitat and that ofthe baby. Our Chinese staffsand thosewho look after the new borns and mamas presents a wonderful picture. Of care . There is more tothe story. Find it if you can. Her baby is now 2 and adorable, and healthy. Her story about China and life there needs to be told to all Americans who follow Pandas.A true test of the compassion and love of the Chinese for their bears and futures.
Thank you Suzanne, many questions answered in your extremely informative blog! Bai Yun and Little Wu Wu have given me an insight into their world, I feel honoured to be there, to see them as individuals not just sweet cuddly exhibits is all down to you and your staff at SDZ. Sooooo enjoy my daily journey into Panda World!!! I am a Panda addict and proud to be one ha ha!
Thank you, Suzanne, for yet another informational post from you. Just what we needed here.
Thank you so much Suzanne for your great knowledge of all things growing up Panda!! I appreciate learning from you about Bai Yun and Xaio Liuu…Take care.
I think either he will be smaller like his father or he will keep growing later on. Either way he is sooo adorable! (Is it possible he is cuter than Yunior was?)
Lisa, I too, have wondered that, but never had the courage to ask it. We may be on a right track, or those brothers may both be quite beautiful, but different too. Love grammmie
Colorado- He is chubbier and smaller-somhown like Gao GAo-whose face is baby-ike and round. If you read the blogs, there is a poicturenof our baby yun Zi with his mama. Isn that cute? I guEss so!! He was just as adorable as all panda babies and he also had a mind of his own. (no baffs! either) Yunnie looks kind of dirty but his mama didn’t allow that. Wu is chubbier and was spoiled from his first exam. Yunnie was treated with kid gloves as if he would dissolve away. Look at that picture above the blogs and decide. Don’t tell though. Ittie bitti is shorter, chubbier and allowed to be spoiled by you darling staff.
Yes, she really does look after him. But he looked so sad after she took the piece of apple away from him!
Did you see the bit where he tickled her foot?
I’m not an expert myself, of course, but I would like to comment on the matter of “mother love”. In the blog you write that “It may look like love, but to a bear, a mother’s behavior pattern is more simply defined as a necessity”. But why wouldn’t it be a necessity for us humans, too. Our “cubs” wouldn’t survive either without a mothers care. We only feel it as “love”. How do we know that a panda doesn’t feel it like that, too? I for myself don’t believe that love is possible only for us humans.
It would be nice to believe that, however we must remember that after two years or less of having a cub around, the mother bears are tired of them and are relieved at not having to care for a cub anymore–and may never see them again. What we may see as “love” may in fact be instinct.
Whoa!! I cannot let you say that. Lun Lun is a devoted mother to Po as she was to her hellion named Shi Lan. But he adored her and she hugged him and fussed over him as she did Po and her first baby. Read the blogs of the Atlanta Zoo. Po was only just now weaned. He and his mama still ocalize together even apart.
I think there is a lot of information that many of the newbies need to research. Spend time with the Atlanta blogs. Lots of real truths there. too
I have read Zoo Atlanta’s panda blog for years, going back to Mei Lan. Virginia, you must know Lun Lun’s nickname is “Mommy Monster.” She teaches her cubs with hard knocks. Such is the way of the bear.
I would generally agree with this statement. Mother panda may care for her young well, but when the time comes for them to move on – to the next pregnancy and cub-rearing, for example – she is able to partition her life in such a way as to not have her two offspring overlap. Cub rearing is an extremely labor-intensive effort for the mother bear, and she can only afford to have one youngster to contend with at a time. From the evolutionary perspective, it makes good sense to separate from older offspring to ensure the survival of the next cub born.
“Love” is a human concept. It’s a word that humans use to describe certain human behaviors. So when we see what we think is similar behavior by a bear, we describe it as “love”. But we really don’t know; for a bear, it may simply be biological, hard wired with no feelings attached. I try not to attribute my feelings to bear behavior. Doing so can make me crazy.
Me too. I let the fantasy part roam through the creative stories lots of us enjoy, but I am both old enough and intelligent enough to know the difference. I love nothing better than when I get a little note from Yunior, or Bai Yun, as long as she is not unhappy with me. She even held a press release to object to my referring to her having a Fluffy Butt. Love grammmie
I for my part think that it’s biological for us humans, too. If we try to find a definition for “love”, we can say that love is when we feel bad when another beeing feels bad and good, when he/she/it feels good. It’s not so hard to believe that that is valid according to the (other) animals, too. And I would think myself crazy, if I’d think that only humans feel bad or good.
As for feelings about adult children; don’t we humans also become a little bit tired of our children when they grow up? We only don’t get as tired as pandas, because we belong to a social species unlike pandas.
I can agree no more, kristina.
While human beings have stronger rationality and self-control, our emotional selves are very similar to animals’, including the feelings of hatred, anger, love and sympathy. The human brains and the other mammals have many similarities.
I believe we have similar senses of pain and love. And human beings are not the only species who love and care others =)

2:32pm est. Bai is roaming about her exhibit as though a bit agitated. Is cubbie having an exam now?
Moderator’s note: No exam this week.
Thank you and just read through other posts realizing you may have already answered my question. Bai may have been pacing because she wanted more food! lol I know that feeling! Hehehe…
Bai paces all the time she waits fsor her food. After a while, and more attent on to her activities you will start to understand all her moves and the way she deals with her cubbie. Pay prticular attention to meal times and her pacing and go ing to the gate and vocals to her babies. After awhile, you may get the clues and what she does b efore food. the baby cannot eat any apple. Yun Zi used to steal a tny apple slice and gummit until the drool was all over his front, and then he would spit it out. They dont eat food or boo or appeslices or anything but milk now. You are learning.
I still get upset if the tykes get too rough high or fall down or get rough with mama(she retaliates) and I have hundreds and hundreds of watching hours. And I take notes still. t his little one is really something else! Have fun!
Thank you so much for this article. This is my first panda den cam, and I have been so nervous watching him! I really appreciate all the blogs the staff do to help us to understand what we are seeing, and not seeing. I can’t get to California so the cam and these blogs are my opportunity to see and learn.
just seems she was a lot more playful with the last cub, gave him more time.
I do agree with that, and was looking forward to some of the same play……but she has been different with each cub. I just learned that from the post from Lil and Bill in the last blog comment section and taking the time to watch each video…..love grammmie
The one thing I noticed, after watching the superb panda video history on the other blog, is that Bai Yun has become a bit saggy and larger over the years. typical of middle age!
I had never seen the wild child, Zhen Zhen before, so watching her in the snow was fun.
I began watching cubs with Yun Zi. Who, by the way, is really pink in his video history.
Thank you folks for posting all those wonderful videos, which brought tears, so I could watch them on a damp, very foggy day here.
Thank you so much for this blog. I have not thought she was a bad mom but was just worried. The cub has not looked distressed or upset at all. I was the one freaking out! lol Love you guys! And love those Panda’s!
Thank you so much Suzanne for your informative blog. You are truely professional and so knowledgeable about the pandas. Thank you for your insite concerning Mr. Wu. and Bai Yun. A big thank you to all the SDZ staff for all that you do for the Pands and fans!
Baby WOOOOOOO should NOT be out in the rain!
Why? What do you think will happen to him?
Hey cjoh~~
He might melt !
You know sugar melts if it gets wet
ags, I will go to work to find a nice photo of Yunior standing in the rain, front arms crossed over his chest, caption telling whomever that he was not going to move and they couldn’t make him. As soon as I find it I will post it…love grammmie
Pandas live at about four thousand feet high in the mountain, in snow part of the year, and lots of rain that they love. We spend a small fortune just so they may have one day every year or two to play in the snow they love, young or old.
I did work, had picked out some great photos for you, but while trying to post them there was a glitch in the Safari system on my tablet, and I lost the whole thing. It just happened that I pretty much ran out of energy at the same time, so forgive me if it is a few days before I look up and post them again. I learned more about copy and paste in the process, but next time will work it a bit different so as not to loose it….love grammmmie
You are correct! And not climbing, and falling. and sleeping wth nature. How could you???????Poor little tyke!
Wild panda cubs contend with the elements all the time. They are well equipped for it. For those not in San Diego, bear in mind that our rain is not so cold as that in the mountains of Sichuan this time of year.
We haven’t seen Mr. Wu for a while now since his fall. Can you provide any info on if the little guy is ok?
Moderator’s note: I’m sure he is fine. The panda narrator stationed there would have alerted the keepers if something had happened to him.
Bai Yun has been pacing and pacing for at least an hour. She has gone to the door several times to be let in, but the door stays closed. Is there a reason for that? I have not seen the baby for a while, so I’m assuming the baby is inside and she want to be inside as well. Is there a reason she is not being let inside?
Moderator’s note: The cub is outside with his mother.
THANK YOU FOR THIS EXPLANATION!!! You guys are awesome!!! Again …THANK U. For everyone else. Bai Yun is a wonderful mom and liwu is the cutest cub ever!!!!!
I wonder how many mothers have treated each of their children exactly the same, not one, it would be impossible. Animals have different personalitites as well. It isn’t unusual for Bai to treat Liwu different from Yunnie. Liwu has shown his stubborn side since he opened his eyes and seems to be afraid on nothing. I have been to the zoo several times but the new exhibit was not finished the last time I was there so didn’t realize the trees and structures are not that high for it to hurt the bear if it falls. I should have known that by common sence. lol Little Gift still has a lot of growing to do, he seems to love to climb and not spend so much time on the ground. Maybe he will when he is old enough to have ground toys. Did they put water in the pond? I didn’t notice. Thanks
Do panda cubs remember who their mother is after weaning and years of growth? Do they have a social network like the elephants, apes and lion prides? Just curious. P.S. I stumbled onto the Panda cam by accident and have enjoyed watching Xiao LiWu and Bai Yun and am hooked!!! Suzanne, thank you for your informative blog.
Moderator’s note: There is a very good chance of cubs remember their mother, especially since bears in the wild know different territories belonging to other bears by their scent. You might enjoy reading Farewell to Panda Dong Dong.
Thank you for the interesting article…I have found this as well in domesticated canines, but their memory seems to include sight as well as scent.
What an excellent informative blog that was!
Thank you Suzanne for the informative blog it was interesting reading, just love to watch this little guy climbing his trees, saw him fall this morning but, he got up and trotted after his Mother, so knew he was OK.
Thank you for the wonderful information. I laughed yesterday when I saw the babe getting a bath, it was like “Mom, I had a bath last week.” Thank you so much for sharing this with us. You guys are wonderful for all the hard work you do at the zoo. I love watching all the web cams.
A superb report as always Suzanne. I am sure newer viewers of PandaCam must be greatly reassured by what you have written. Us longer term viewers know that baby pandas can and do fall from great heights only to bounce back, but is is scary the first time you see it.
Delighted at how well Xiao Liwu is developing and would dearly love to be able to return to SDZ before he is into the next stage of development. Saw Yun Zi at 14 months, maybe Xiao Liwu at 12. Ever hopeful.
Excellent, informative blog Suzanne addressing many of the issues that have caused concern for so many viewers. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this blog.
Here are Friday morning’s videos: The 1st one shows Bai Yun with Xiao Liwu while they are in the mini-hammock and on the climbing structure (this is when he almost falls while playing with her.) The 2nd shows Xiao Liwu’s impressive and strong climbing skills as he continues to explore different parts of the climbing structure. He does fall, but you’ll see he’s just fine, and goes off to the moat. He’s become quite adept at getting down there … and he was happily playing while sitting in his “recliner”.

Doxie Mom – I can’t sign on to You Tube to tell you, so I’ll have to settle for here. Thank you so very much for your videos. I work on the East Coast, so I miss a lot of Wu Wu time. Your videos are the high point of my day!
And to the moderator – what a wonderful post! Just perfect!
The videos show him to be intelligent, relentless, and the end of the second one showed him in a most colorful way I have ever seen. As usual they are wonderful, thank you, D-Mom, you are great….love grammmie
Thak You from me, too, Dear D-Mom! Even Your titles are so fascinating.
Thanks for posting these facts. After so many years of watching, reading and listening to everything and anything ‘panda’, I’ve come to understand these things. It never hurts to have the facts repeated and I thank you for doing so. Having a cub to peek in on during my work day (or any day) once again is simply wonderful. It’s been far too long and I am still hurting from the loss of Mei Xiang’s second little angel in DC. We almost had it, but it was not to be. Xiao Liwu has taken some of that sting away with his antics and it’s a joy to be able watch him progress thru the stages of his life.
Holly, sometimes some folks wonder why the same questions get asked over and over again. I think it is simply because the pople that are new to the blog, or pandas in general, ask the same questions that others asked. I first saw a birth and became engaged when Yunior was born. I have grown children, and lots of time on my hands due to chronic illnesses. I was able to not only spend lots of time in the current things, but also was able to go back through most of the old blogs that are in the archives. I have found that the comment sections are full of great information just like the ones we have now. And they are full of links to videos and photos that are priceless. If I had my 2 kids, husband, and energy when I was younger I would not have that luxury, so I get to feel good if I can field a question or two when I know the answer. There are moderators on hand to correct me when I get something wrong. Not everybody has the time I do…love grammmie
I can’t express how much joy I’ve received via the pandacam. I enjoy reading the blogs & all the comments to them. I’ll miss Mr. Wu’s weekly exams & updates.
How often will he be examed?
Where is Mr. Wu hiding?
Is there a forum where all the fans of the SDZ’s pandas can post other than just after a blog?
Moderator’s note: He is scheduled for an exam next week, but that may possibly be his last one until he’s due for a yearly physical. I believe Xiao Liwu was in the mini-Keebler den structure earlier today. Other forums for our panda fans include our Facebook and Twitter accounts and our free Zoo app.
Roxie, there is a wonderful panda fan group on Facebook where you can chat with other panda fans and share photos and videos. Click my name (in green) and it will take you to the group. Panda people are the best!
Suzanne: What a wonderful comprehensive commentary on the relationship between Bai Yun and Liwu!! I asked the other day, but hadn’t a reply….do you ever mix the offspring together? Like will Liwu ever meet his older brother? Will Gao Gao meet the cub? Just wondering. Thanks for ANY updates on the cub and the other pandas!!!
Moderator’s note: We have, on occasion, opened the “howdy” door between exhibits for one of our pandas to see the other through protective fencing. You can read about one time here: Howdy!
Thank you Suzanne for that reassuring info about Wu’s tumbles and his play with Bai. I’m wondering about Yun Zi and how he seems to be pacing all the time. Is this a sign that he’s anxious?
Moderator’s note: Yun Zi starts to move about when keepers are near, as it could mean food is on its way–a happy time!
Thank you! As always, informative and well written (we can all understand it!!!)
I say let’s make a little panda cam helmet for Mr. Wu. We could see his world …..
I know that’s a joke but how interesting would that be?
It sounds great!!! I thought about that too, until I saw him climb the Garden Room Tree all the way to the ceiling, and I feared he might get the cam stuck somewhere putting him in danger. I wish I could draw…..I have the cutest pictures in my mind of various helmets and straps holding a cam on top or side of his head. It would be fun just to see him with a cam, let alone see what he sees. I have noticed that he chases camera lenses, I don’t know if he sees a cute panda in the lens, or if he just likes odd looking things….love grammmie
Can you please tell me what, specifically, you meant with this statement: His behavioral development is strong, even advanced when compared with some of his siblings (Yun Zi comes to mind).
Great blog. Thanks very much.
Thank you for sharing! I love reading all the stories. I’m in love with the little one. I love watching him and his momma!
Thank you Suzanne for your thorough response to all of our concerns (almost)
My personal feeling is that this particular cub is much more bold, active, brave, adventuresome, restless, and fearless. He is much more so than any of the cubs I’ve been lucky enough to watch thanks to your wonderful webcams. Combine that persistent, and not easily curbed, personality with an aging mother who really needs her sleep to sustain both of them and in our human world it seems like she is beyond annoyed and frustrated and impatient as a result, in her own Panda way. I think the point many of us watchers have been trying to make is that this time, with this cub, it appears that he has fallen more frequently, thanks to his fearlessness and advanced skill in scaling such heights at such a tender age, and been pushed aside and off platforms more often than we have witnessed before. It truly is a different experience for long time watchers so please “bear” with us when we express concern
Mahalo and Aloha
I love the way you put that….love grammmie
Thanks. And I hope the heroes at SDZ know we are completely in support of them and their Panda care
In this case it maybe should be “don’t bear us although…”
It gives us great joy to read about how great Xiao is growing. Informational blog which helps us understand and relax every time we see the little guy at the top of the branches. (^-^) It truly is amazing!
Thank You
Currently on camera: Bai Yun sleepin’ in the rain. That’s what a true bear does!
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6vKeidsV9mX0zJyVTwln5Jti6N9pyZSaC1YNJHxrT28?feat=directlink
I noticed she was over the edge in the head down position to keep her cheeks fluffy, and to make sure she does not look her age, or that she is both a mother of 6 & grandmother to 10 so far. Love grammmie
Rainy day in Paradise (San Diego) and Bai is loving sleeping in the rain. Big smile from me. We were taking a nap on the grass at Balboa Park one time with out two small children and the sprinklers came on. What a treat that was, so I know how Bai feels. I still smile about our adventure.
Hey Suzanne~~
Thank you for your report.
I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.
I’ll have to work on keeping in mind what you said when I’m watching sweet Li Wu Wu.
I’m guilty!! I would love to ((((((hug))))) him and I hate to see him fall.
Its 2:15 pm in San Diego and though its raining like crazy all day, the current view of Yun Zi’s exhibit is one of sun and dry ground.
Is that a standard shot that you all use for some reason when no one is running the camera?
I see no pandas moving around.
Thank you! Just curious…
Moderator’s note: Yep!
Hey Jeslyn~~
Thanks for posting about the weather!
When it happened to me in the middle of the night we thought it was gremlins. About 3 or 4 am, in SD East County it was dark, but when I looked in to see what was happening it was bright as daylight. This was just few weeks ago. When we are at a time of year where we cannot see anything at night maybe some of the day’s sights could be shown to us night owls??? Love grammmie
Woo! I feel so much better!
Thank you for this post.
Where is Li Wu Wu??
It’s been a while since we’ve seen him.
lol Am going into Wu Wu withdrawal !
Need to see the Baby!! Please!
Moderator’s note: He is now off exhibit and out of our Panda Cam’s view.
Dear Moderator~~
Thanks for replying. Really do Appreciate.
I read Jeslyn in San Diego’s post about the weather.
As much as I miss him, I’m glad Li Wu Wuuu is not out in the pouring rain.
If you see him, pls tell him we miss him and Love him. Will see him tmr.:)
Sweet Dreams tonight, Baby Wuuuu ♥
Thanks~~
puppygirl
Thanks for all the wonderful information? You certainly have answered all my questions. My fears have been put to rest. I truly, truly enjoy the Panda Cam. I, too, am heartsick about our loss at the Nationl Zoo!
Even though much time has passed since the tragic loss in Washington, D.C., just the thought brings great sadness. We were all so delightfully surprised and happy at her birth, and felt like we had been smacked across the belly by bat a week later, that it is still hard to think about even here in San Diego. I remember not using any cam application with sound because I did not want to hear the sorrow in mother’s voice, and none of us I ever questioned what we would have heard from the mother was displaying sorrow and loss. I find the thought odd now that I think of it.
Carol, I as once a Brown too.
thanks for giving reassurance to many first time panda parents (commenters) and even the repeat panda parents. having an understanding of typical panda behavior helps.
a bit off topic, where did Yunnie climb up to? is that a new habit?
I agree w/ another commenter, that Xiao Li Wu does appear to be a boisterous young panda. he kind of gets himself into trouble a bit but it’s nice that he’s curious and testing himself.
forgot to mention, if exposing her teeth is Bai’s idea of a “play face”, I would hate to see her angry face. she’s a funny lady panda.
Suzanne: I am so glad you posted this — it’s just what I thought all of us needed to hear. We do tend to judge things from a human standpoint and that is not fair to our friends the bears (or any other animals!). So thanks for all the reassuring comments and reminders about bear behavior and how normal things are for Bai and Xiao Liwu. Great report!!!
Thank you so much Suzanne for the lengthy explanation. I am also guilty of observing their interaction through a “human” lens and overacting. It is reassuring to know that all is well with Momma Bai and little Wu. Love to watch the PANDAS!
I’m with those of you who prefer not to watch Mr. Wu when he is so high up in the trees, but I rejoiced when I saw him going on his merry way, even down into the moat. Mama Bai was totally oblivious to the rain as she lounged in the tree structures, and our Gao Gao (with the beloved hairy feetsies) was an absolute delight, munching away. Not to be ignored: Yun Zi put on quite a show, picking and choosing among the choicest branches of bamboo. The guests (in slickers!) stayed to take a lot of photos.
It’s been a wonderful day! Thank you all
Thanks Suzanne for having explained to us about the behavior of Pandas. Very enlightening. The beauty of Mr. Wu impresses; He has a beautiful face and is delicious and terrifying at the same time, see him when he falls in árvores.E them, I’m worried that something might have happened more seriously. But you really clarified about it and also about his mother’s relationship with him. Thanks and a hug.
A wonderful blog Suzanne. This will help all the new fans understand what a baby is going through during the different stages of his or her life and also a refresher course for all of us who have been around for all 6 of them. They do climb up, fall down, get up and do it all over again.
Kudos on the post Suzanne, perfect timing
I absolutely appreciate the opportunity you afford us all, and I am forever grateful..
Thank you-
Thank you Suzanne for this wonderful update on Bai and the little gift as well as pandas in the wild. I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot.
If any of you have Direct TV, Panda’s In The Wild will be showing at 8am 1/28 and 9am Thursday 1/31 on the Smithsonian Channel. I watched it today and it was very good. Little Wu has it easy!! Bai is a great mom, once you see this you will really understand the way of the panda’s better.
Thank you for the great information Tanda. Lots of us do not have access to the Smithsonian channel, so after you get to enjoy it will you let is know what you can about the program please??? Love grammmie
Thank you for this extremely interesting blog on these amazing animals. It addressed my concerns over the cub falling from high distances so frequently while also addressing mother’s behavioral patterns with her cub. “Through the bear lens” was the perfect title.
Thanks so much for posting this blog! You answered all of the questions that pop into my mind when I watch the panda cam. I definitely have a better insight into Bai Yun’s behavior. I remember being really worried when she kept pushing Xiao Liwu off of the platform i I believe the garden room. So again thanks so much for clearing a lot up for me!
I enjoyed your post Suzanne!
Thanks for the info on Xiao Liwu’s development. It will be fun to watch him grow and see how he compares ~ large in body like Bai and her father Pan Pan, or small and compact like his father Gao!!
Thank you so much for the great blog! It had so much info that made me feel better.Baby Wu is my first panda to watch. And now I’m hooked. And I saw Gao Gao sitting in his man cave with his boo nice and warm and out of the rain. He just makes me giggle.
I have really enjoyed watching the web cam. Sometimes I will spend an hour or more just watching. Probably check in on it at least 8 or 9 times every day. You sometimes feel like you are part of their family. Can’t thank you enough for all the info you have given us on how pandas interact. It’s fun watching mom & son play. Wish I could get out there before he gets too big but maybe another little one will come along in a year or two. Thanks for a great education
Thank u for explaining panda bear behavior we all appreciate that and I want to also thank u for all the imformation u ha e given everyone on the blogs its helped us to understand pandas better.
Thank you so much for your blog, it really put things in perspective and helped to put minds at ease. I’m sure you saw all of the comments on social media when Mr. Wu fell from the tree today and we were all so worried. It’s very hard not to humanize something so previous that we’ve all watch grow before our eyes. Thanks again for putting our minds at ease.
Thank you Suzanne — We all appreciate you taking the time to cover all of the areas that you discussed. Because of Bai Yun’s age, we’ve been told that Wu-wu will most likely be her last cub — when happens in the case when it’s mating season again and Gao Gao want to salsa? Also, what is the ratio of human to Panda years?
Moderator’s note: We don’t yet know what the future holds for our pandas. It is not fair to compare panda years to human years, but please know that a panda’s lifespan is 14 to 20 years in the wild; up to 30 in managed care.
Who can say what the future holds? I think, however, its fair to say that if Bai Yun and Gao Gao are up for it in the spring of ’14, we would let them attempt to breed. Of course, if they are not… that would be fine too.
That’s wonderful to know regarding their life span in managed care~~and that Nature will be allowed to steer the boat for these two Love Birds!
Thank you Suzanne for the reminder about pandas….Sometime it’s good to get a refresher course!!!! Nevertheless, i’t hard watching the darling Xiao Liwu fall……
And I do believe that pandas know L O V E!!!!!!
Maybe it’s called another word in the panda kingdom!!!!!!! needless to say, it’s the same thing, no matter what you want to call it……
Some animals DO show love!!!!!!!!
I’ve been watching the pandas since Bai Yun first arrived, and with the birth of her first born!!!!!!!
Though, I did not post on the blog until Xiao Liwu was born, my husband and I have been watching and going to see the pandas at the zoo and we love them……
The baby panda cub Xiao Liwu has been such a delight to follow on the web cam and seeing him at the zoo along with the other pandas………..
How many narrator are stationed at a time watching the pandas?????
DoxieMom thanks for the great videos!!!!!!
Thank you everyone who works at the zoo who take care of the animals, Thank you narrator for everything also!!!!!
I love the pandas ALL OF THEM….and Xiao Liwu Snuggle Puff has stolen my heart!!!!!!!!!!
What goes on at night with the pandas does anyone know?????
Moderator’s note: We have a panda narrator stationed in the main viewing area, where Gao Gao and Yun Zi are, and one in the north exhibit area during the time it is open for guests to view Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu.
I have observed lots of stuff in the late night/early morning hours of all the bears in residence. I often have my sleeping schedule switched from normal folks living in the area to the exact opposite. This gives me a sometimes unique prospective, well some of us that prospective, just by circumstance. The bears do everything much the same as daytime activities, except Gao Gao, who makes miminal movements–no I guess that is normal for Gao Gao.
When it comes to Bai and baby things are pretty much like daytime, just shorter than daytime activities. It is harder to see what they are doing, but you can see their moevments, matched to a memory of things you have seen in the daylight. The biggest difference is the natural lighting–when not observing the den infrared cam……the moonlight, or other dim light adds a measure of magic to the scene……love grammmie.
Thank you for such an informative blog. Very interesting.
Thank you so much for this information! I will translate it to Swedish and show it for my mother (who is 64 years old), since we both checking the panda cam several times a day. My father calls Xiao Liwu “our little baby” since we all monitor the panda cub.
Someone should teach me the title of music.
SAN DIEGO ZOO GLOBAL 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Good morning. I do expect to go back to sleep, but first caught a quick glimpse of a Panda in the dim morning light. I identified the panda by the enclosure, but realized he was doing something unusual—walking through the enclosure!!! Yes it was none other than our own Sweet Daddy Gao Gao actually moving, walking around like a regular panda, on his Fluffy, Furry, Sexy, Feetsies. I hope everybody has a wonderful day….love grammmie
I saw that too, Grammie. Somebody was walking up a good appetite for breakfast!
By the way, dear moderator, does Gao Gao have access to his exhibit area overnight, or is he shifted there when the keepers arrive in the morning? How about Yun Zi?
Moderator’s note: Gao and Yun Zi have access to both their exhibit and bedroom spaces overnight.
Grammie, I am new here. How do you manage to tell the grown pandas apart?
Pam, you will know Gao Gao because he is somewhat small for a fully grown adult male, one of his ears is smaller than the other, and he has fuzzy “slippers.” Bai Yun is with the baby, so you will know her by default, but she has beautiful round ears and is called the “Teflon Panda” because she always looks clean and white (well, usually!) Yun Zi is a very sweet teenage panda, and you will know him because he looks quite a bit like Bai Yun, but his ears are not as perfectly round as hers (and he is still about 20 or 30 pounds lighter than she is.)
I happened to see the same sight and was very astonished: is it really Daddy Gao Gao walking around.
Liwu may stay small like his proud Papa, Gao Gao. Nothing wrong with that! Love the Pandas.
Thanks so much for this post, Suzanne. It is reassuring for many of us to look at the world through panda eyes. Bai Yun has been a very successful mother and two of her daughters are continuing that tradition.
By the way, foot-blocking behavior seems to start young. When I was in China in ’09 having a photo-shoot with 1-year old An An, his foot was blocking my from getting at his apple treats. The apple treats were there to keep him calm and somewhat distracted while this human was oohing, aahing and generally making a complete fool of myself! So glad to have the pictures and the memory.
Between 7:30am and 7:40am Saturday morning, the camera was switched between Gao Gao (?) and Bai Yun, both having a hearty breakfast. The colors shown on the cam in Bai Yun’s north exhibit were vibrant, while the one in Gao Gao’s was mostly in grey scale. I am curious why there’s a difference. Is it due to the different quality of the cameras themselves, or is it because the two enclosures got different degree of direct daylight at the time?
Moderator’s note: I believe it is a lighting “thing.”
We all see light from within when we look at H I H Bai Yun, remarkedly so when pregnant or raising a cubbie that is still young…..and there are more flowering plants and greenery in “the classroom” which it gets to maintain when there is a young one in residence. If mom and baby stayed much longer the room would soon look like others…..love grammmie
The cubbie just fell out of the tree from an extremely high location and then the camera operator switched to another exhibit. Please let us know how the cubbie is.
I saw baby fall out of a big tree, is he o.k. this morning (Saturday )
I’ve read the post about the bear lens, but adventurous Mr. Wu fell from a tremendous height at about 8 AM, and the camera switched away from his enclosure. Worried, worried, worried. Please tell us he is OK.
Please let us know as soon as you can that Xiao Liwu is ok after his long fall from the tippy treetop early this morning. The camera followed him down and when he was no where to be seen, switched to Gao Gao, who is still in view some time later. It was not just a tumble and those of us who saw him fall are holding our breath. Thank you!
A concerned Hello from Germany!
About fifteen minutes ago Xiao Liwu fell off a tree, camera followed him some seconds later to the ground, but no bear there and then switched to Gao Gao.
I sit here and wait to see Mr. Wu again – healthy and adorable as always. Please show me that everything is alright. Thanks for that and, of course, the incredible work you’ve all done with thw whole Panda family!
Thank you very much for the insight, Suzanne.
I viewed the “Panda Tales” DVD last night again featuring Zhen Zhen’s first year and panda conservation efforts. It has so much information and hope every panda fan has a chance to view it. It is so good and the quality/clarity is so much better.
I hope SDZ Zoo will make a DVD compilation of all the panda cubs featuring the cute little tykes and any feedback/info that the SDZ keepers can provide to differentiate their personalities or whatever antics they do
… I will gladly have them in my panda collection (Hint.. Hint
). I already have the books from the SDZ shop but has included only upto Sulin.. So another book will also be very, very nice (Hint… Hint..
).
On the film, Dr. Ron Swaisgood mentioned about the scarcity of the den places in China ( due to environmental factors like logging) where Panda mothers may not be able to care for the young cub due to this problem. He mentioned about constructing human-made den areas as a possible interim solution. Do we know how well that effort is going?
On another note, Hua Mei has had 9 cubs already. Does anyone have information if any of them have been trained for survival in the wild or if any one one of them have already been introduced to living in the wild? Is Mei Sheng a daddy yet?
I know Sulin has one boy. I hope she and her cub (maybe subadult now???) are doing fine. She is always going to be a sweet princess to me.
Has Zhen Zhen picked her “prince” yet? or is she still busy exploring and playing around?
Just curious as to how our former SDZ panda cubs are doing in their native China now and any contribution to the panda conservation! We certainly miss them. I wonder if any SDZ staff has visited them in China since, and if the pandas recognize them just like Bai Yun recognized her mother, Dong Dong’s scent in the bark of wood given to Bai.
Now even I got my mother (in her late 80′s) asking to see Little Liwu and is charmed by him just like me and Bill.
So many questions, I know
.. and thank you Moderator for your patience
As far as I know, there is only one captivity-born panda, Tao Tao (淘淘), that is currently in the wild. His mother Cao Cao (草草) was born in the wild and rescued when she was a few months old. Tao Tao was released to the wild last October and has been carefully monitored by Chinese scientists since.
To learn more, there’s a recent article from MSU: csis (dot) msu.edu/news/panda_survival_01_14_2013
And I’m sure you know that Su Lin and her cub were in the same survival training program that Tao Tao and Cao Cao were in.
Other than that, I don’t know much else. And I would love to get an update of all the SDZ-born pandas and their offsprings just like you!
Thanks, Fay!
I did read about the survival training of the cubs at Pandas Liveon
www(dot)pandasliveon.com/giantpandas/2013/01/working-hard-to-reintroduce-pandas-into-the-wild.html
which seems very similar in content in your link and talked about Tao-Tao. However, I did not know about Xiang-Xiang and poor cub did not survive.
So I cheering for all the former SDZ cubs that their offsprings will be strong and make it into the survival training and help contribute the panda population in the wild.
By the way, thanks for the info you provided on “Panda Tales” at the other blog! I already ordered it! I just finished watching the documentary about Tai Shan made by Animal Planet (for those interested, it’s called “A Panda Is Born/Baby Panda’s First Year” and can easily be found at Amazon). So so so much fun!
I have the newest guidebook released in fall 2012 which does feature Zhen Zhen, Yun Zi, and even Mr. Wu! He hadn’t been named yet at the time of publication, but he is in there! It’s a lovely book and also has a couple of pages on the red pandas, takins, and pit vipers that are also part of Panda Trek. If you are not local, you could probably call the gift shop (I believe they have a 1-800 number) and see if it can be shipped. Ask for the Panda Trek book.
Su Lin’s little boy is named Yun Hui and is at the panda kindergarten at the Bifengxia panda reserve. He lives with two female pandas about his age- Su Shan and Yun Duo. He is doing very well and gets along well with the two girls he shares his enclosure with, and will be 2 in July. He can be watched on the explore.org cameras, and you will be able to pick him out because he has white toes on one of his hind paws!
I believe Zhen Zhen is still at Mt. Emeishan, where she has a bachelorette pad and has two female pandas about her age adjacent to her but is doing well and is a favorite of her keepers. Some photos and video of her this past fall are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/86799970@N00/sets/72157631618998828/with/8023390065/
I will check on the book tomorrow. I hope it is still available for purchase. Thanks for the heads Up!
.. and thanks so much for the link. It was nice to see Zhen Zhen again.. though, it seems like she needs more trees to climb and more mind-enrichment toys for all the energy that she has
…
… and I found this from the Pandas’ Aunti Rita on ZZ:

and Mei Sheng from the Pandas’ Auntie Rita as well

Wow, what a story, a great one. I have to say, this is the best I have ever read. Not that the other stories are not good, they truly are. So informative. If I could have had a teacher in school, give me so much interesting information, I would have loved school. Thank you so much. I could have read all day. It is funny about the points of where Bai Yun will push Mr. Wu away from her, as I have seen this. She takes her eating very serious, and I can see why. Bai Yun is a great mom, I am so proud of her. Obviously, everyone at sdz, is very good to her and to all of the pandas.
I just saw Mr Wu falling from a tall tree.
Hope he is OK.
Suzanne,
Can your article be posted somewhere on the front page and maybe entitled “FOR NEW PANDA WATCHERS”. It’s such through and useful information for new comers to Panda watching, that I hope you can find a spot on the first page for this article. Well done.
Just sitting here watching beautiful Bai eat bamboo and wondered if you ever give these bears fish?
Moderator’s note: No.
Moderator, thank you for your answer about night time…
Thank you Suzanne for the wonderful and educational blog. Mr. Wu is my first cub to watch and like so many others, I worry when he falls. Now I can be more relaxed as I watch, however, I will never like it! I will probably never be able to make the trip to see the pandas in person so thanks so much for the pandacam SDZ, keepers, vets, moderator, narrators and anyone else who makes this happen.
BTW, we have lots of snow in Michigan the pandas in which the pandas could play!
Doesn’t “Mr. Wu” realize he can’t sit on a small twig and chew on it at the same time? He can’t eat his seat out from under him. It doesn’t work very well; especially if he’s high up!
For rearing twins under managed care, Chinese breeding centers practise ‘twin switching’, like what they did with Wah Mei’s 3 sets of twins. In the wild, mother panda would typically focus solely on 1 cub, and totally ignore the other twin. Nonetheless, there are reports of mother pandas successfully reared twins together in the wild; including one rare case, which reported seeing an adult female together with her 3 cubs.
Question: In those cases of successful twin rearing in the wild, have there been any observation studies published, on how the mother successfully handle her twin tasks in the wild?
Moderator’s note: Not tat we are aware of.
I see brown slippers on Xiao’s back paws. YEAH!!! Taking after Dad.
Thanks so much for this timely reminder. It certainly emphasizes what a good mother Bai Yun is when we think the growing and increasingly energetic cub still gets ALL his sustenance from her body. What she is doing is ensuring that her body continues to produce increasing quantities of milk — from bamboo. The more rapidly little Wu Wu grows and the more antics he entertains us with, the more is demanded of Bai’s body. If that isn’t maternal sacrifice, I don’t know what is!
Panda xox to all, ESP moderator Debbie on her debut.
10:34….Mr. Wu has a new supply of hay in the top of his mini Keebler and he’s just having a wonderful time!!
Thank you so much for this blog. There have been times when I have seen Mr. Wu get the swat to get away from Mom….and as a human it did make me frown but after reading this informative blog I can once again smile. Mom sure does eat with intensity but knowing that she is doing her job is great. I have also seen Mr. Wu fall a few times and cringe but I have faith that if he was hurt mom would come running. We are blessed to have such wonderful Pandas to teach us and even more amazing Zoo staff and volunteers to educate us when we just don’t know what the heck these Panda babies are up to. Thank you so much
And a scant five minutes later, he’s out like a light! Wish I could give him a scritch between the ears….
The darling baby panda Liwu is sleeping right now all snuggled like a snuggle puff….He is in the tree stump that is covered with soft leaves of some kind…..
I would like to know when does the baby panda Liwu nurse???? does anyone know for sure???????
Moderator thank you for your information that the cameras are on all the time…..
I see that the cubbie is back in the exhibit area and I saw his mother climb across the limb to the keebler tree where the cubbie is to check on him. She loves her little boy, that’s for sure. What happened after his fall from high up in the tree this morning. It was close to 2 hours after the fall before he was shown again in the exhibit. Did the veterinarians check him out to see how he was after the fall, and if so, what did they say about how he is doing post fall?
Thank you Suzanne for these precious informations
!
Just a little question : our young Xiaio Liwu love its comfort… So, he had particulary love his den when he was a baby !
!
Now, during his exhibit’s time, he can make choice to sleep between very comfortable mini-Keebler and soft moat
… But after this exhibit’s time, it seems that Xiao Liwu has neither cozy place in the garden room : he can simply dispose of the hard grey concrete platform
!
It is just as possible to put into the garden room an another mini-keebler or hay on the ground where it could lie down ?
Best regards
Hey Laurence~~
IMHO~~Excellent Idea !!!!!!!
puppygirl
Here are 2 Saturday morning videos: In the 1st, our fearless, intrepid cub Xiao Liwu continues to amaze us with his curiosity as he climbs high … and cause us concern when he drops out of sight. In the 2nd video Xiao Liwu was moved to the mini-Keebler, and his mother once again joins him. Once awake, he provided numerous photo ops for his visitors as well as his Panda Cam fans before he drifted off to sleep.
2013-01-26 Xiao Liwu Remember to breathe while watching

2013-01-26 Xiao Liwu’s mini-Keebler nest, and Bai Yun comes to visit
http://youtu.be/YPdtE_GdIzI
I think —-Thanks DoxieMom. I’m glad I wasn’t watching. Gulp!!!!!
OY! Thanks for the heads up about holding breath … but it still makes my feet and hands sweat to see him climb so high, fool around with twigs! and then – go boom. I think the little fella may need remedial tree climbing.
Thanks Doximom for capturing this little dare-devil!
about 8 am 1-26 Mr. Liwu was on the tree branch did he fall again? the camera went to Bai eating i was just wondering. He is too much It’s like watching your own kid I cover my eyes, computer get turn around I get so nervous bebe is gonna get hurt!! thanks for letting us watch him It’s fantastic.
Xiao Liwu’s Auntie Rita just posted this picture of XLW sheltered from the rain under Mama Bai Yun, and I have to share!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ritapetita/8416230138/
All I can say is WOW, what a picture.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful picture.
Fay~~
Thank you for posting the link to Auntie Rita’s pictures!
Rita~~
SO Sweet♥
Your pictures are Super Fantastic!!
Where and how did you get them??
Thanks for allowing us to see them. ♥
pupptgirl
How cute was that!!! And he’s SO dirty, while Mom is pristine as usual
Thank you for sharing, Fay and Rita. Beautiful photo – gosh that little man really needs a bath!
Ha ha, what a glorious photo, that photo should win an award! Mama Bai’s eyes are looking up at the heavens as if to plead for the rain to stop! It’s priceless!
You need to copywright this photo. It is awesome.
Just perfect!
About 3/3.30ish gmt, Mr Wu climbed to the top of a tree. Right to the top! and then fell. The camera switched to the floor but there was no sign of Wu Wu. Is he Ok? It must be been a tremendous fall….Hope the little guy is okay.
Xiao Li Wu looks so comfy cozy in the keebler with lots of hay. he looks as though nestled in an easter basket.
We should make him an honorary Easter Panda for the upcoming season!!
Is there some reason why cam operators change the position of the cam off the cub when keepers are in the exhibit with him. Just noticed 12:18 PST a keeper raking and the cub above her in the branches.. the cam then switched to branches above him. Are we not suppose to view those encounters?
Moderator’s note: Our keepers prefer to be off camera.
Thank your for the enlightening and reassuring story, Suzanne. I was just thinking of a fall Tai Shan took one time. It was in their indoor habitat, and from some rocks. He and Mei were playing. He must have vocalized, so she quickly picked him up and took him into the den. What a good Mom she was!
Yes, it was a hard fall and Tai Shan cried out loud. The rocks were not quite high from ground, I think that Tai Shan was not hurt but just scared by this accident.
I remember that fall too. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, Tai took quite a fall that was pretty far down. When he squealed Mei started vocalizing and immediately ran down to him and comforted him. It was such a heartwarming scene–Mei concerned for her baby.
We, who have followed panda life for years in SD, AT. and DC and in China, know pretty much what is normal for these wonderful bears. But also as humans it is difficult sometimes to realize the difference between bear life and our life. Thank you for taking the time to educate and inform everyone who treasures these bears. There is no disputing that Bai Yun, Lun Lun and Mei Xaing have all been outstanding moms to their cubs. This has allowed their cubs to grow strong and healthy and return to assist in the reproduction of their species. This is due to the fantastic researchers, scientists, veterinarians, and zoo staffs that so dutifully look after these treasured animals. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy the daily life of the great Giant Pandas.
Is Xiao Liwu on exhibit all day now? The Panda Cam makes it look like he’s on exhibit all the time with his mom, but your website says that he’s only on exhibit from 9:30am-11:30am.
Moderator’s note: The exhibit is open to guests during that time, but the cub is in there much longer.
Thank you so much for all the wonderful information. You folks are doing a wonderful job. Love watching Mom & Baby. He is such a little go getter!!! Doesn’t appear to have any fear – just wanting to explore everything & figure it out.
Thank you SDZ, excellent information. I have watched Liwu via the app since birth. We pandaholics do watch the behavior and wonder. I watched the other day as she soumersalted him off the platform three times, thinking oh my she is going to hurt him, but guess it is just normal. Thanks again for sharing him with all of us. I live in Ohio and love that I can view your zoo. Camera operators do a wonderful job too.
Excellent post, as always, Suzanne.
Thank you for all those great videos and web cam that you provide us fans…. the wonderful pandas are so special as are all animals at the zoo…………
My heart sank! when Liwu fell off that high branch!!!!!!!!
I hope he was alright the darling sweet baby that he is…..
Doxie thank you for the special precious moments that you capture on your camera……
Bay Liwu seemed so at peace and contented sleeping in the mini-Keebler with the soft moat of Bermuda hay that the “Keepers” provided…..
Thank you all~ so much for all what you do at the Zoo here in San Diego…….
Perhaps next year he will win a prize for the “high fall” with Toushie twitch”, if we all vote it might be like “stuffing the ballet box”. Then we can have Yun Zi for president, Bai Yun for most beautiful, Gao Gao for best father and greatest lover..I bet there are Lot’s of prizes. We can have a fun year!!! Love grammmie
Moderator I am confused, I thought I ask once before if the bears are inside during the night hours and I thought you said yes. As I read the blog people talk as though the bears stay outside all night and are not locked in bedrooms. Are they inside or outside during night hours???? Thank you.
It depends which panda bears we are talking about.
Yun Zi and Gao Gao have access to both their inside rooms and theie outside exhibits at night.
Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu only have access to Bai Yun’s inside suite at night. Her suite is composed of three rooms — Bedroom, Sun Room and Garden Room. If they want to get out of the inclement weather, they can use the Bedroom.
Our sweet Mr. Wu was voted Panda Cub of the Year by Giant Panda Zoo Awards! As if we had any doubt over who the cutest baby (well, they’re all cute, but I think we’re all a little biased,) is!

‘Wu Wu, come down now. Mama needs you to help put up the decorations!’ yelled Bai Yun as she was sweeping up a frenzy. It is 2 weeks to Chinese New Year. The US pandas were coming to visit as the Gaos were not able to travel due to Wu Wu. Uncle Chuang Chuang as flying in from Thailand. Lin Ping wanted to catch up with Yunior.
Wu Wu climbed down from a tree and Mama gave him red decorative items to hang up. Happily he climbed up various trees and hung lovely red and gold decor at the end of various branches. Some were shaped as fire crackers, some contained calligraphy with couplets and some were paper cuts. Wu Wu was happy to help his Mama.
Yunior was press-ganged into wrapping red packets filled with blessings and some treats. Bai Yun liked to distribute these to all animal children during Chinese New Year. She had also obtained pussy willow and plum blossoms. She was placing them into large long vases, and she tied little red bows on them.
Gao Gao came home with some special groceries as Bai Yun needed to bake special cakes and biscuits. Also she will be cooking specil dishes for the Reunion Dinner on Feb 9th. That is when Chinese all over the world travel home if they can to have a family reunion on the eve of the New Year. This was going to be the Year of the Snake so Bai was thinking of making sweets in the long sinewy shape of snakes.
‘Gao Gao, what shall I do? I am not going to be ready for the New Year!! I have left it too late!’ wailed the busy Mama.
Wu u wanted to run to his mama. He hated seeing his Mama sad. Yunior held him back as Gao Gao took his ife into his arms and gave her a hug.
‘Honey, you are an a amzing cook and we, the boys and I will love whateever you cook. You relax, let us take care of the decor and the cleaning, OK
, babe? I will go and buy whatever else you need. Wu Wu can come for a ride and we’ll get ice cream. And Yunior can help you start baking. It will be a great joyful Chinese New Year, you’ll see.’ And ith that, he gave his beautiful wife a kiss on her cheek. Yunior and Wunior giggled and then Wu Wu chased after Papa and Yunior went into the kitchen for an afternoon of baking with Mama.
Congratulations for Wuniors Gold Medal! You must all be very proud of him, as well as the whole Zoo-family. And you really deserve to be!
I think there is more coming on this story—-I sure hope so since Yunior is always fun to hear from…..love grammmie
Awoke this morning to the wonderful email showing results of the Panda Awards and there is our adorable little Mr Wu awarded a Gold medal for panda cub of the year. All cubs are adorable but doesn’t this also show that the quality of the cam and accessibility for the public is so important. So the award should also go to the cam operators, vets and keepers at San Diego zoo who give us such great access to the pandas and have us all so hooked on them – you are all stars! Delighted also to see our handsome Yang Guang in Scotland receive an award for a favourite panda outside of China.
Lady McBear must hold him in higher esteem too, Spring Salsa Season will soon be upon us…it cannot hurt to have a Mr. full of pride, and his Lady gazing with adoration. Good luck in dancing season, we want to hear a panda with a lovely Scottish accent……can hardly wait!!!! Love grammmie
Not to mention the narrators and moderators of this blog.
And the winner is …
Giant Panda Zoo Awards 2012 results.
Panda Cub of the year
Gold Award winner : Xiao Liwu !
www (dot) giantpandazoo (dot) com/panda/news/giant-panda-zoo-awards-2012-the-winners)
Congratulations !!!
With this morning’s climb on Sunday at 6:59am PT, Mr. Wu says to the aunties and uncles “See, I know how to go up high and come back down. No ouchies from this climb”.
Great show, Xiao Liwu!
Good morning all, Just want to congratulate everyone who works with the Giant Pandas. Our Mr. Wu won the GOLD medal for “Cub of the year”. Who didn’t know that he would win it? He is the sweetest, cutest, smartest, daring little guy ever.
You all deserve a whole bunch of Kudos for the sensational work that you do every single day. CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!
Why do the pandas scratch using their hind legs? I’ve never seen them use their front legs.
Is this true of all four legged animals because I just noticed the koala do the same thing?
JUSY, my guess would be use what is handy, and reaches “the spot”.
Congratulations to Mr. Wu for winning Panda Cub of the Year in the 2012 Giant Panda Zoo Awards!
giantpandazoo{dot}com
Not only that, but Basi won an award, along with Fu Long, Ling Ping, Xi Lan (the X-ma)……well you get the cousin connection, sorry for any I missed. At the very end of the awards is a great amount of links to other zoos and facilities around the world……love grammmie
Is it just me or does Mr Wu look bigger this week? Every day that I check on him he seems to have grown more overnight. What a cutie!
Please pass a big Thank You on to whoever set up the new Koala Cam. Another excellent choice on which animals to bring live into our homes. I have yet to see them do anything except sleep but I know I will see something one of these days.
Well, I saw one climb up and down. The other did look around with his/her ears up. They are such cuties
Mom Bai just dropped Li Wuuuu !
After he landed, she hurried down to see about him.
WHAT Happened after she got down to him?????
Please!!!!!
Moderator’s Note: The cub is fine, try not to worry too much!
Dear Dear Moderator~~
YEA!!!!!!!!
Boy Howdy! I Greatly Appreciate you replying and letting me know our precious Li Wuuuu Wuuuuu is OK!!
I was So glad to see Mom Bai hurrying down to see about him but then we couldn’t see them on the ground
Am really trying not to worry about the “falls” ( the bounce!) but golly that’s a Tall Order, for me anyway!!
Have to say I didn’t understand a short while later when he was running as fast as his little legs would go trying to catch up with Mom. When she slowed down and/or stopped and he caught up to her, she kept swatting him away or down. Couldn’t figure why she did that??
Yep, I felt SO sorry for him. All he wanted was to be close to his Mommie.
Sweet little baby.♥
I’m sorry this is so long cos I know you are busy.
Thank you for the Super job you do!
Hope you have a Great Day~~
puppygirl
How do we get them to stop with the extreme closeups? Seeing the big picture is nice too!
Ohhh, I like both of them.
Love seeing Li Wuu Wuuu close-up.
What a wonderful, reassuring, informative blog, Suzanne. Thank you again!
Sweet Li Wu Wuuuu~~

Congratulations on winning the Gold for Panda Cub of the Year!!

You are such a sweet, precious, adorable baby and we Love you So much! ♥
Please be careful climbing. We worry about you when you fall.
Hope you are enjoying all your fans who come to see you. We watch you every day on the computer. You are such a cutie pie!
We are sending you Love, (((((HUGS))))) and kisses~~

Good morning all…..I am having a Panda weekend……eating and sleeping!!! When I tuned into the cam a few minutes ago I could tell all is well in Panda Land….Gao Gao was front and center giving the guests a lesson in proper Bamboo eating. His demonstration was flawless, and he just as handsome as he always is. Hopefully I will get to do some reading and posting later, but it now I need to chek out the napping situation………love grammmie
Hey, Hey,Hey!!!
How about that pose in Si Jia’s Award’s picture??!! SO COOL !!
Don’t know if he/she is a male or female but lol it looks like Si Jia is very accustom posing for high-class pictures and loves the camera!
Love our baby’s picture!
What a darling little clown curled around and peeking through for the camera! ♥
BaiYun and her baby. Just thinking ab out Yunnie, sweetest little and big cubbie. He loved his hamock,,and he loved his treats, and he just enjoyed sittng and laying around doing nothing, maybe eating boo which he brought up to his mamas throne. And didnt cluimb aND HATED BAFFS, AND LOVED HIS MAMA. ADORABLE!!
Hey virginia~~
Enjoyed your post!
What was Bai Yun’s throne when Yunnie was a cub?
What was Yunnie’s favorite toy?
So funny about Yunnie hiding his mom’s treats! Did she ever catch him doing that?
If she did, what did she do?
hehe!! I wonder if all cubbies hate Baffs?!!
It was So funny when Bai and Wu Wu were in the den and she would be trying to hold him still to give him a Baff and his little legs would be kicking like crazy!! Always made me LOLLOLLOL!!!!!!!! Bless his heart ♥
Li Wuuuu is such a sweet little darling♥
Am sorry I missed Yunnie when he was a baby.
So many questions for you! Sorry.
puppygirl
Here are some videos you might enjoy when Yunzi was a cub. He is just an adorable ball of fur (… as are all of Bai’s cubs but he started his antics way young as soon as he opened his eyes and can navigate I think).
All videos except one are from the wonderful DoxieMom who continues to give us wonderful memories of all these cubs to watch whenever we wish. Thanks so much DoxieMom!

I think Bai is a very good teacher of survival techniques for her cubs when it comes to food ( “You snooze, you Loose”
!!! ( … and anything I guess for that matter …
All great videos, take a moment to watch them, you will not regret it..love grammmie
Hey Grammmie~~

You’re right! They are great videos
Yep, I did FLINCH and miss a heartbeat in the one where Mom
swatted him to the ground
Sweet little sleepy baby♥
Wish Yun Zi and Li Wu Wu could have a good time playing together!
:)
LOL! Those two playing really would make a Super video with Lots of LOL!!!!!
Hope you are feeling better♥
puppygirl
Hey Lil & Bill~
Thank you So much for the videos!
Really DID enjoy them♥
Loved that he got the treats and apples!
Bless his heart♥ He sure looked like he throughly Enjoyed the apples!
hehe!! Thought he looked like he stood his ground pretty well when Mom arrived.
So Cute when he found the one she missed and he took his time with it and then just really Chilled!!
Not meaning to sound
about Mom. She is a terrific Mom ♥ and I understand she is teaching them to be big boys.
It’s just that (let’s face it!) she is SOOO much big and they are SOOO
little (and such precious little Darlings).
Doubt if I was HIH Bia, that I could have dealt with all she did!!
hehe!! Having my ears bitten, my face clawed, someone always thinking I am a mountain they want to climb and then I have to eat constantly so I can provide the “little Darlings” their food!! LOL!!!!
OH, we Mama Pandas have our work cut out for us!! Whewww!
Golly, I Love um’ ♥♥♥
Thanks SOOO much~~

Lots of clips packed in this Sunday morning video: Bai Yun on the mini-Keebler with Xiao Liwu; playing on the lower level of the climbing structure after she pulled him down; playing on the mini-hammock (with her tossing him off at the end ~ by mistake?); playing on the ground, with a trip to the pool that has water in it (not sure Xiao Liwu liked that). Enjoy!

Love your videos♥♥♥

I can hardly wait to see if he gets his first “boy” dunking. They have to wait until later, but it is nice to know that I have them to look forward to…love grammmie
Congratulations to Liwu for the [cub of the year]….You are the sweetest adorable little baby panda who has captured our hearts, mine for sure!!!!!!!
And thank you everyone who helps to take care of the pandas at the zoo……
Also thank you “Keepers” for putting that nice Bermuda hay in the mini-tree trunk so Liwu had a nice soft place to take a nap……… He seems to like that spot among others than he also loves……
I sure would like to know when does he get his nourishment???? when does he nurse?????? He looks wonderful, and he does look like he is growing every week……What a love he is along with his mom and his dad and brother……
Remember how Bai would sometimes “roll around him” when feeding? Well sometimes she still does. Considering his size it is not hard to understand how he can be hidden when her back is towards us. He is able to take his milk faster now so it is harder to see it happen. Just before weaning time he will take all of her milk in just a few minutes, once a day. Sometimes you will only know he ate because he is wiping his chin as he wanders off to see what else is happening that he might mess with……love grammmie
Grammmie & Danielle~~
Please ‘cuse me for jumping in.
Love your post, Grammmie.
LOL!! Can just picture Wuuu Wuuuu wiping his chin then hurrying off to find some action!
What a sweet, precious Baby♥
HEHE!!!~~

Is that Mr Wu snuggle like a little white stone under the log in the distance of Bai’s exhibit? If it is, he has been napping for ages! Tuckered out little fella!
That really is a big white rock under that big log and it’s in Gao Gao domain. I once thought it was Gao Gao
Me too Jusy…..
I WATCHING (LITTLE MAN) HE ACT LIKE HE IS HURT FROM THAT FALL SATURDAY. HE IS NOT ACTING RIGHT.. PLEASE CHECK HIM OUT.
They take very good care of their pandas. I’m sure he is fine. They take bumps and falls like a champ, just like this blog post explains.
Bai is so funny, she loves her little man. She really does watch out for him and the fall he took today when she was with him on the mini hammock didn’t hurt him a bit. I watched Panda’s In the Wild and learned so much. Bai is a perfect mom!!!! Little Gift is so confident in himself he doesn’t seem to worry much and that comes from his mom’s training. I am thankful the zoo’s in the world are doing what they can to save the animals. Good job SDZ.
Tanda, was that the tv program you were talking about last week? If not perhaps you can point more folks in the right direction so we can all get better information under our panda belts……….love grammmie
I posted the dates and times. It will show again 1/31 at 9am. Smithsonian channel Direct tv
Hey tanda~~
Thanks for telling us about this program.
I ordered the dvd of it and it will be here soon.
Am looking forward to watching it.
I don’t get the Smithsonian channel.
Thanks again~~
puppygirl
@ Michelle S check out keepers day part 1 & 2 they explain your question. It’s very informative
Good morning, Gao Gao is strolling (his version of a pre-feeding power walk), through his yard, and I bet there are other Pandas doing the same thing. In Washington D. C. or Atlanta one of them is doing the Stevie—-I guess each area of pandas has it’s way of telling their NannyKeepers what time it is, and put in their breakfast orders.
I really did put in a “panda weekend” so I have a lot of catching up tp do……unless my weekend is not quite over. My current plan is to snuggle under my covers and try to stay awake for a movie….but if you do not hear from me I will be napping with Mr. Wu, or whoever’s turn it is to get some shut eye. Love grammmie
Thanks for the great update!! Our queen mamma Bai knows how to successfully rear her babies.
Congrats to Mr Wu and SDZ !!
I was watching one of the pandas for a while today, and he sat for a long time (it seemed to me, anyway) just extending his tongue in and out like a snake. Why do they do that?
Moderator’s note: Most likely you were watching Gao Gao. His tongue-flicking appears to be connected to dental issues that we continue to work on with him.
Here’s a question to pretty please pose to the team… have there been times when researchers have found injured panda cubs in the wild (injured from falls)? Are there circumstances that cubs have managed to get themselves seriously hurt? Or is it mainly in unique circumstances like predators have tried to get to the cub, etc….?
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Panda Team.
I am curious about this also.
Thanks~~
puppygirl
Bai Yun is the sweetest mother. And never growls. Buuuuut…. I HAVE seen her ROAR on the pandacam. There was that one time, that little Yunnie made the mistake of biting her ear, and she took him to task; Roard the fiercest roar of any panda, pulled Yunnie out of the tree, then dragged him front and center of the exhibit and read him the riot act (panda style) in front of all the watching guests. She was clearly trying to teach little Yunnie a lesson that day in front of everyone. And needless to say, I never saw him bite her ear again. Poor little Yunnie was kicking and flailing while mommy ‘spanked’ him. And when she was done, he ran away, so embarrassed, “Mom!!! Everyone was watching — including the internet!!!!”
Well, every now and again, a mom has to show a child some discipline. Poor little Yunnie; probably still has flashbacks to that fateful day! Bet he’s never bitten any ears since!! Just bamboo! ;oD
Moderator’s note: Remember, Bob, there is no sound on Panda Cam. Please re-read paragraph 7 of this blog post.
Thank you very much Suzanne. This post was very informative.
hello moderator – i dont need to reread paragraph 7 to know what we saw that day. yes, i’m aware the pandacam has no sound. perhaps you just weren’t there that day. at least i hope that’s the case, because it erodes the integrity of this blog if you choose to misrepresent what’s happened and been broadcast live over the internet. i saw what i saw, and that doesn’t make Bai Yun any less of a good mom. it just makes her a mom. have a nice one.
Thank you for such a fantastically informative article! And thanks for the reminder that we often personalize our interpretation of what the bears are doing… they are bears, we are humans, and they do NOT react as humans do. I so enjoyed reading this. I’ve never felt Bai Yun was anything less than an exemplary mother, and you certainly corroborated that impression. And it’s important to note that while Bai Yun is being a wonderful mother, and Mr Wu is growing up splendidly, the San Diego Zoo needs to be complimented on the care-and feeding- given to the pandas. It is a joint effort, and the collaboration works to give us viewers these wonderful moments of Mama and toddler! Thanks so much!
