After five long months of waiting, the day has finally come! Xiao Liwu will greet his adoring fans tomorrow, January 10, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is an exciting time for all of us!
Xiao Liwu has been making his way out to the north exhibit with his mother for a few weeks now. Each adventure out to the exhibit has given our little guy time to practice his climbing skills and get the lay of the land. Xiao Liwu has explored every inch of the exhibit, from the climbing structure to the moat, from the empty pool to the bushes and stumps. He has made his way up to the high branches of the climbing structure and continues to learn how to get down: backward, forward, or hang and drop, sometimes taking quite a tumble! Little Xiao Liwu reminds us that panda babies are made to bounce!
During his practice outings, we have discovered that Xiao Liwu’s favorite place to nap is in the moat. We covered the bottom of the moat with hay to act as a cushion in case of a panda spill; sure enough, Xiao Liwu made his way down there and decided that it is the perfect place for a snooze after a play session. If you come to visit and don’t see our little star, he is most likely napping at the bottom of the moat. If only he knew that he has so many admirers waiting to see him in the fur!
Mr. Wu, as we affectionately call him, will be on display for a couple hours in the mornings for the first few weeks. This will give him time to acclimate to the sights and sounds of our guests. Although he is used to his keepers, Xiao Liwu has never seen large crowds of people, and he will need time to get used to his fans. As he gets more comfortable being on exhibit, we will increase viewing hours.
As one of his caretakers, I am excited to see how our little guy will react to seeing his adoring fans. He did great at the employee and media preview today! Knowing his easy-going personality, I’m pretty sure Xiao Liwu will smile big for the cameras, climb up to a high branch to hang, drop, or somersault, and retire to the moat for a nap.
Elizabeth Simmons is a keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Read her previous post, Panda Cub: Exam 6.

Congratulations SDZ! This Little Gift is making headlines everywhere!!
Sweet little Wu has been napping for a long time! Wake up, Wu, wake up! We want to see you a-movin’
Thank you so much Elizabeth!! Xiao Liwu was such a little charmer for his media and employee debut this morning ~ hope the public get to see him more before he takes his nap in the moat.
If you missed his Media Debut this morning, here is 24 minutes worth of Xiao Liwu exploring, nibbling his mother’s leaf eater biscuit, going in and out of the hay filled tub in the pool, and interacting with his mother while she was anointing herself and then eating bamboo. And finally, as most of you know, he wound up in the moat … but how did he get there?

Fantastic placement of the HD Cam in the North Exhibit ~ thank you so very much! And a big shout-out to the person controlling the Panda Cam this morning ~ very nicely done!! Looking forward to the days to come
Thank You, DoxiMom
This morning I sat with my camera trained on the cam screen and filmed the Lotsafun Mr. Wu was having…and I knew that you would be making a video for all the fans! What a total thrill it was to see him in the classroom! And
how wonderful the MeerKat camera monitor handled all the activity! How did he get into the moat? He fooled the camera…perhaps he has learned Yun Zi’s Drop and Roll
Bobbi Wood when will you be at the zoo getting us some wonderful “in the fur” video, with the great music, and/or comments? It has been a while since I caught some of them…love grammmie
One more video if you can handle all the cuteness. Over a 6 hour period (from 8:30am to 2:30pm) you can capture a lot of sweet, adorable moments with a baby panda cub, even when he’s sleeping. Those stretches and yawns will make anyone ooohhh and aaahhh
2013-01-09 Precious Moments in the Moat with Xiao Liwu
http://youtu.be/G9wX1iWV7Pw
He looks so comfy, makes me want to build a moat.
Doxie Mom, you are wonderful! You give us “little gifts” of video clippings that we might not otherwise see. Thanks so much for all you do! Will you be at Panda-Monium this year?
Thanks so much for this Doxie Mom. Can’t really understand the attraction of the moat but it was one of Yunnie’s favorites. (Remembr the Yellow Monsters who had to resuce him in the rain?) Even Po in Atlanta loves to nap in the moat. Is it a secial place to hide?
Wow D-Mom you are like the bunny with the drum, keep going, and going, and going….all the way to our hearts. Thank you…..love grammmie
Thank you so much, DoxieMom for all the great video captures!! I saw a good bit of it, but it is still wonderful to go back and watch it again and again….and thanks to you, we can all do that!! You are indeed a treasure, Doxie! <3
I have lost on how many times I watched the debut of Little WU. It is so cute to seeing him running around the exhabit exploring it and having fun. It was cute when he tried to climb on Her mighty princess. And she was busy easy and put her paw up and pushed him down. After wondering all over the place to find a place and take a very long nap. That video was great too. Thanks doxie mom and grammie for the clips. I sure hope I can make it to San Diego before Mr Wu gets bigger.
Kathy S. the video stuff was all DoxieMom, I wouldn’t even know how to go about doing any of it…..love grammmie
you still do have some good things that you post about our little guy. thanks
I just read the weather report for San Diego and sounds cold for that area. Where do the pandas go when the weather gets bad? Will Bai and Mr Wu be in the den ? Hope they stay warm. Give them all a big hug and a warm blankie !!! The HD cam is great to see Bai and Mr Wu is great to see them in color. Take care of our little guy and his family.
Moderator’s note: It may be cold for us San Diegans, but this is panda weather. They are built for it!
Thanks for letting me know the Pandas like cold weather. Is it cold in China where the reshearch center is?
Moderator’s note: Pandas live in damp, misty forests of bamboo and conifers, in altitudes above 4,000 feet (1,200 meters). That is also where the Wolong Breeding Center we work with is located.
Thanks for the answer. I am glad that cold weather is what our pandas like. Now we don’t have to worry about our little guy and his family. You all take such good care of them all.
Good morning Mr. Wuuuu, so nice to see you out and about. And you too, momma Bai Yun. I didn’t expect this blog up so quickly but it is nice to have it. Good work zoo, staff, NannyKeepers, moderators and all of you who were involved any way to make this happen. Love grammmie
I have been watching this little guy for quite sometime on the panda cam. I am so taken by him and this web cam. Hard to believe that I can sit here in Canada and watch this amazing little guy. Wish I could visit him in person. Enjoyed watching him today while he was checking out his new surroundings and held my breath as he took a tumble while trying to climb all over mama. Good work by all his handlers. You must all be so proud. Good luck tomorrow – and yes – I hope to tune in!
Ontario Canada Panda Fan here! I have seen people from England (where I was born) and from my adopted home (here in Ontario) and cannot believe that we all get to share in this amazing miracle! Keep on watching, I will !
thanks for explaining about the hay in the moat. I was wondering about that. seems like Xiao Li Wu made a sparkling debut. I’m not ready to watch him fall from a tree but he does look really great on the new cam.
I hope everything goes well tomorrow. I will be at work and I am very upset I wont be able to watch the panda cam. Hope there is going to be a video or pictures, Good Luck San Diego you all do a brillant job !!!
Don’t worry, someone will be your video recorder
Isnt it awful when you have to be away from panda cam?
I can’t believe it. A new blog entry and he is still sleeping! All those new things to explore really wore him out.
Congratulations Mr Wu on your debut today. You did so well and I enjoyed watching you explore and play and finally taking a well earned nap!! You seem to get cuter by the day!!
dEaR aubnTIe LINDsay,
Thank you vewy much.
Panda wuv,
Wu Wu
Best of luck on your first big day Mr. Wu! It has been an amazing opportunity to see you grow.
The star did great today. He was so fearless that he entered the exhibit all by his furself. Bravo! May you do so well tomorrow!
I saw that Bai Yun loved the gift you left her. What scent was on it as it was fun to see her anoint herself with it?
Thank you for taking such great care of these sweeties! Kudos to cam operators for following the little cubbie for the hoomans in the cloud.
Moderator’s note: Wintergreen oil!
glad you asked about that. Bai Yun looked very excited about that scent. I could understand her rubbing the little log around her face but then it looked like she was scratching her face (?spreading the scent around). I half expected her to do a Yun Zi dance.
Bai sure was enjoying that log. She was smililng while she was rubbing the log all over herself.
He’s sleeping there right now and has been for awhile!
Mods, kudos to you, too, for keeping up with the storm of comments and questions from all social media avenues. I still have several places to catch up on
Moderator’s note: It’s been a busy day!
Watch out Bai, he’s going to be hunting you down like a baby bear with a mission when he awakes.
Do you know if Panda’s have growing pains like humans?
01/09/2013 Xiao Liwu public debut with a little better quality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iqsR0YSzwE
Has staff separated mom, I haven’t seen her check on him in his going-on-6-hour-panda-power-nap? Or is she just enjoying the quiet and/or beginning the separation phase?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun is with her cub at all times (well, except for those quick exams!).
Panda Cam, is down, Must be overloaded with Mr. Wu’s fans
just please allow me be fussy about his name, i’m sure the keepers must have known this already, but to a native chinese ear, calling him Mr. Wu sounds like calling him Mr. Thing to me!
Since “xiao” = little, “liwu” altogether = gift . “wu” alone means an object, a thing, an item etc. however, there IS also the last name Wu, same pronunciation, different character and different tone. well, i bet Wu might be the easiest way for non chinese speakers to call him though!
We need to all relax about this kind of thing. In the big picture, this is a miracle and continues to be through the hard work of the San Diego Zoo. Errors about his name and the punctuation are really not needed when we are discussing and watching this exciting phenomenon. No disrespect meant, just another panda-holic who wouldnt mind being called anything as long as pandas are around
Thank you for clarifying as I made the same notation. Non-native speakers would not know this; perhaps everyone will take note?
Just a funny side note, in the South-Eastern US (and maybe other areas too) we have a name for little/very young girls who think they are “big stuff” (they think they can do and know everything), we call them “Miss Thing”, although it’s usually pronounced “Miss Thannng” (with a southern drawl and a long ‘a’). So, to me, calling Xiao Liwu “Mr. Thing” is actually quite fitting from where I come from. He’s such “big stuff”!!!
I also think that it is a form of endearment to give a loved one a nickname, even when they don’t make any sense. My friends do it all the time. One of my coworkers gave himself a nickname by typing his name wrong on the display screen during a big demo. It didn’t make any sense, but we (and more importantly, he) still call him by that nickname more than a year later.
So, whatever name you use, I have a feeling that we ALL share the same feeling of love and joy about the KING OF CUTENESS when we use it!
Another SDZ Superstar as Young Master Wu was a non stop blur for the 35 minutes or so before he got tired of the Pandarazzi and retired to the Moat for a well earned nap ,LOL
…. I can’t wait to get out to SDZ from NJ and see his antics in person once my Wife finally gets out of the Hospital again as she was excited to see him on the News tonight…
Pandarazzi! I love it! Thanks for the giggle.
Jules- Ontario Canada
Hello Dennis, yes we are all somehow Pandarazzi regarding our “little gift”. Mr. Wu or however we feel calling him is so adoring and gives us so much joy. I envy all of you living near SDZ being able to visit Xiao Liwu since I am so far away in Europe. But I must not be unthankful since I had the pleasure, too, of seeing Fu Long and Fu Hu as babies in Vienna. All the best for you and your wife.
Wow, Mr. Wu has really become quite brave. The new Panda Cam is awesome. I enjoyed watching his media debut this morning and he seemed to be quite comfortable with all of the flashes from the cameras. Thanks for letting those of us who are too far to come visit be a part of the excitement.
Yesterda yi ran Yun Zi “big entrance” for contrast, wow, the new cam is as different as night and day!
So precious, they are ALL gift
Moderator: now the Mr. wu is out on exhibit, does that mean that Yun Zi’s tree will be coming soon?
Moderator’s note: Yes, we plan to start construction/installation next month.
I’m curious to see how Yun Zi would react to seeing Xiao Liwu in his exhibit? What would Yun Zi’s behavior be like? In the near future, would it be possible if the keepers could do this for a few minutes like an exam?
Moderator’s note: Xiao Liwu is not old enough to meet his brother, Molly, and Yun Zi’s exhibit is not connected at all to the exhibit the cub is using, so this scenario will not be happening. Xiao Liwu has enough excitement to fill his days.
I asked what Yun Zi’s behavior would be like. And I asked what would happen if you place Xiao Liwu for example on Yun Zi’s hammock. I’m not saying you should do it, I was just saying it hypothetically. I was curious about the interaction between the two brothers. Yun Zi deserves some excitement too!
When Xiao Liwu is older and weaned from mama, he might meet his older brother if they are put in exhibits that are side by side. They would still be in their own enclosures but there will be a meshed gate separating them. This is how Zhen Zhen and Su Lin met each other. If you check the SDZ blog archives, you should be able to read about this meet up.
If Yun Zi is still at SDZ by the time Mr. Wu is weaned and on his own. Yun Zi turns 4 this year. The age they normally return to China.
Of course I know about the meshed gate and how they have used it in the past. Why can’t we have two pandas in the same exhibit like in China? I’ pretty sure Yun Zi would not be harmful to Xiao Liwu. And how come Gao Gao never ever gets to see his cubs? Atlanta Zoo has a window in the exhibit where Yang Yang can see his cubs. I believe this is a research facility and they should be open to trying new things. They can always break apart Yun Zi and Xiao Liwu if it doesn’t work.
Moderator’s note: See post Howdy!
My understanding of China, like age pandas are put together, not different ages. Plus those pandas are under the age of 4.
Everyone just wants to make sure all animals and humans are safe. Better to introduce with safety gate so all is kept safe. We don’t want a human hurt trying to break up a fighting pair.
I think you should keep in mind that they are not “his cubs” in the social meaning as we humans think, because pandas don’t live in family groups like for example we primats do. I have understood that they are just “an other panda” for an adult panda and therefor not welcome.
Molly, you could read the following blog to see what reaction Sulin and Zhen-Zhen had in procimity to each other. Maybe Xiao Liwu and Yunnie will have some similar reaction.
http://blogs.sandiegozoo.org/2009/09/29/panda-sisters/
About name pronunciation…….putting the family members together and things like that……the thing we all need to remember is that they would not know they were related. If a wild animal sees itself in a mirror it is unusual for it to have a sense of self. There is lots of really good fiction we love, but we know we are just fantasizing about the Panda family and how it would relate within itself. The Pandas have no such fantasy, they eat, drink, have cubs, and live in a forest, (or in our case comfortable managed care), no matter how we enjoy them, they are who they are, but it is okay for us to love and enjoy them. In the end does it matter what we call him while he is here with us? When Tai Shan went to China he got called Tarzan—-I don’t think many folks were upset about it, I kind of thought it was cute so let’s all try to enjoy them together, trust in Bai Yun and her Staff to raise Mr. Wu and enjoy each other’s company here……..love grammmie p.s. love to Yunnie & Gao Gao too.
My cuz Tai was called Tarzan cos Tai Shan is the Chinese translation for Tarzan. Hee Hee, I keep asking him to swing through the jungle and holler, hee hee.
YZ
Since you changed panda cams, is Mr. Wu still in the moat or did he finally climb out or did he have to be rescued? Bet he is hungry. It was such fun watching him this morning just hope tomorrow goes well since it is an hour longer for public viewing.
Moderator’s note: A keeper brought him back to the bedroom area. Glad you enjoyed watching him this morning!
What a busy little boy! Our little (“xiao”) Liwu (two words together = “gift”) looked like hadn’t a care in the world exploring his surroundings and then on to his hideaway for a nice, long nap. Sooo cute! This was surely a treat for all of us today!
Ahh is so cute he not sure where he is.He well soon.I did see him sleep is so cute
In the title of this blog, what do the symbols mean after Wu??? Wonderful video, thank you SDZ for a job well done by everyone on staff.
Moderator’s note: It is supposed to be an apostrophe. I have revised the title.
lol…I thought it was Chinese symbols for something, sorry.
What a big day for Mr. Wu!:0) He look like he was having so much fun. Great videos! Can’t wait until tomorrows videos. Bai was so cute with her treat rubbing it all over her face. Thanks for such a great job SDZ, keepers, vets.
Thank you SDZ….. you made my day. I just loved watching the adorable
Mr Wu today. It was so entertaining to see him explore the outside area. He is a beautiful, smart little boy!
I am surprised Bai Yun didn’t wake Little Gift up instead of a keeper. He really did rest well, bless his heart.
Little Gift didn’t seem as excited with the wintergreen smell as Bai Yun, was that because he is so young? Also, was Little Gift able to see the people today? Another question, was today the first day Little Gift had a treat? He really went for it.
Moderator’s note: I’m sure Xiao Liwu saw the crowd. And those treats were for Mom; he’s not ready for solid food yet, although he may mouth them a bit.
As I knew I would, I burst into tears when that door opened and Mr Wu came out like he owned the world! I love him extra because he was born on my birthday! Cant wait until tomorrow!
Thanks for sharing this bundle of joy with the world
You’re not alone Jules, i cried like a baby when he stepped out, but at least they were tears of joy and happiness. He did great. I just checked in on Mama and Mr. Wu and both are sound asleep, as of 7:28 am est. Wonder if they know what’s in store for them today? Keep up the great work everyone at SDZ – how proud you must be and rightly so!!!
I stand corrected. By the time I ended my previous blog, I went back to the cam and Queen Bai instigated playtime with her son. He wanted to sleep in but she wasn’t having it. They played for a long time then she went out of the den and came back in with a round pan that must have had remnants of some scent that she loved because she was in heaven. Poor Mr. Wu wanted in on the action and I think he got more than he bargined for. I was hoping they would settle down and take a nap so I can get some work done before the big debut
I did too. What a cute bundle of joy Bai has given the world to love and watch him grow. Thanks also to SDZ for this great video and the blogs that go along with it. The Press sure enjoyed this little guy. He looked so brave coming out into the exhibit. What a big goy he has be come. The new panda cam in the exhibit is great. thanks again. Better get going so I won’t be late for work. Have a great day Wu. You have become a “REAL’ star with me and the whole world. Hugs and Kisses l
Thank u sdz for such a cute gift
I loved seeing Mr Wu. He just explored every little nook and cranny. He was having so much fun. Tomorrow is even a bigger day for Mr Wu as it will be longer and his fans will get to see him. Get a good nights sleep Mr Wu.
Love the video.:)..looks like someone needs a bath..lol..
Here’s a link to a wonderful video from CBS
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505263_162-57562965/baby-panda-ready-for-san-diego-zoo-public-debut/
Thanks so much for sharing that. I totally loved it.
Thanks so much – that was wonderful
Our “little gift” is now a STAR for the whole world to enjoy!!! Thanks for sharing the clip from CBS
How thrilled I was when I tuned in about 8:15 today to see Xiao Liwu exploring in the north exhibit. However, I was worried I’d never drag myself away to get to an appointment by 9, but he decided to take a nap in the moat , so it was easier to pull myself away from the computer. I am so glad DoxieMom has posted the videos and hope to get a chance to watch them SAP!!!
Liwu surely is a busy little guy… congrats to all at SDZ on this excting day, and best wishes for the public debut tomorrow.
“Little Gift”must have been hungry after is long nap in the moat…Did he finds his way out of there? His mom seemed unaware of his whereabouts for many hours…Did she go looking for him, or did he have to be rescued from the moat? What a love this baby panda is, I just love the pandas…Can’t wait until tomorrow to see him in the morning…
Thank you for showing the video… All of you at the zoo are amazing people how you take care of these wonderful animals…
Moderator’s note: A keeper carried him out of the moat. He has his keepers well trained, and they are the first to admit it!
I noticed Bai Yun pushing her baby away with her foot and once when he climbed up her back she reached behind her and pushed him off. Is this normal behavior and why would she push him away? To me it seems cruel, he just wants to play and be with his Mom.
Moderator’s note: It’s normal behavior: she is teaching him that she is the boss.
… and you do not interrupt Mama when she is eating. Bamboo is not for playing *LOL* … and those treats, they are all mine
It bothered me too so I looked at the videos several times. It seemed to me that Cubby looked like he was trying several times to get her to pick him up and coddle him, perhaps a little spooked by all the people and flashbulbs. The very wise veteran Mommy, shrugged him off as though saying; “it’s nothin’ honey babe, go on and play.” Then he turns and does that, just wanders off in his own curiosity and then lays down peacefully for a long nap – underneath and in front of all those hoomans -believing his Mommy- nothing to be worried about. She’s even got her back to them most of the time, completely calm. Cubby would read that in her and follow her lead – ok, I’ll go play….Mom’s in control. Anyway, that’s what it looked like to me after studying it….
Ruth, perhaps she had Yunnie chat quietly with Mr. Wu on their iPAW and iPAW mini to remind him they had prepared in advance “now go have fun”. Love grammmie
Dear Auntie Ruth,
My baby bro is very spunky and fearless. And all cubbies want Mama’s attention. Even in the den, Wu Wu will do what he can toget Mama’s attention. She knows when we really need her and when we need to learn to be independent of her. And when she is ready she will roughhouse with us. She is good at that. And we wuv that.
Thanks for asking about Wu Wu.
Love,
Yunz
Ahh, Mr. Wu, you delight me, like you can’t even imagine. I totally loved the little video of you outside, and how dirty you were getting. You are such a little cutie, but I’m sure you already know this. I wish i could come see you in person, but unfortunately, I can’t. I hope you know that I will be thinking about you, and how many hearts you will be melting. Mine would totally be a puddle, as just watching you on the panda cam, and the videos of your exams, just make it melt. Hugs and kisses to you and Momma Bai. If you feel up to it, tell your big brother Yun Zi, I love him, and I totally love you too. Have fun tomorrow, and wait to get your nap, after you make everyone happy.
I was so thrilled to see Master Wu’s segment on CBS This Morning ,and to know that the “Eye Network” has joined the “Peacock Network”, NBC, as fans of this special widdle guy! The reporter should be honored that Liwu gave him a friendly cuddle and not a grab and nibble like an NBC reporter got a few years ago at Wolong when he was greeted by a yardful of kindergarten cubbies who thought he’d possibly make a good snack or toy. I hope Xiao Liwu’s debut goes well ,and he’s not scared by all of the “OOOHHHHs!” and “AAAAAAHHHHs!” his fans will inevitably utter in the face of his incredible adorableness!
I remember watching Yun Zi’s first outting and all of us worried that he would fall down the moat. Wuuu sure has it all quite figured out by the time we saw him.
I hope folks are prepared for the cold and the rain on his opening exhibit to the public! This cub will be even more muddy by the end of the morning.
i think lil fluff butt will sleep til morning after all the excitement from today….bai seems to just things in stride….but still has her eyes on baby….i am officially addicted to the panda cam….what a wonderful job all you sz employees do….i just love the web site thank you.
.
“Now the day is over….night is drawing nigh……”
Girl Scout campfire song (and used by many others, too).
I am humming that as I watch what must be a very tired little Panda cub sleeping in the den, probably with a belly full of warm Mamma’s milk. I wonder if he is dreaming….and gathering strength for another BIG DAY!
8:30 pm PT our sweet boy is curled up in the den, resting up for another big day tomorrow! Such a lovebug.
I would go see him this weekend, but I just know I would get arrested.
Just out of curiosity, what would you be arrested for??? If I hear that someone was it would be nice to know what for….love grammmie
Awesome debut, Wu! Love U!
Fank you, Auntie Cindy.
Wuv,
Wu Wu
Since the cubbie is not getting a physical exam this week, will he be getting one next week? I watched the CBS video about the cubbie and his mom, and the newscaster said that the cubbie is 18 pounds now. Is that his current weight? Getting to see Bai and the cubbie in color is amazing, and I can’t believe how clean Bai’s hair is and how quickly the cubbie got dirty. His momma will have to give him a thorough bathie tonight to prepare for his public debut on Thursday. I know I’ll be watching. Thank you Doxiemom and San Diego Zoo for the videos of Bai and the cubbie’s media debut today, because I missed seeing it live.
Moderator’s note: He weighed 16 pounds on Jan. 1.
Why SD zoo doesn’t allow people to post comments on Youtube?
Moderator’s note: Sadly, it was getting too many nasty comments.
Hello Andy, I hope you got to see the videos of “The Panda Cub Debut”. There are some posted in the comment section-try not to miss them….love grammmie
I’d really like to offer a huge, heartfelt thank you to the blog moderators, veterinary and keeper staff, PR team, videographers/photographers, and the research team for keeping us up to date with the adorable photos, videos, and blog posts, answering our questions, and taking such good care of our panda family for the past 5 and a half months. I have learned so much from all of you and I feel so fortunate to live in this amazing city and have the pandas right in my own backyard. I can see your delight in Mr. Wu in every video, blog post, and photo posted. You guys really do all have the best job in the world!
I sure do agree with you JL. Wish I lived that close to SDZ too. Everyone that works at SDZ are wonderful. A big high five for them all. I hope soon that I will able to make in to SD.
Oops! It’s 5.22 a.m. San Diego time and Bai plays with a small tub/container with full energy in the den. She bites it, puts it on her head and permanently pushes little Mr. Wu who helplessly try to reach the container out of the den. Such a wrestling….
This morning around 5 AM PST I dropped in to check in with Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu. They were playing so I stayed a little longer than usual, sorry about that but they are cute. Xiao Liwu tried to get away as usual, he bit Bai Yun almost every where including her tail, she had him by the leg, he finally got free and left the den. Bai Yun followed him and returned with a black bowl/saucer. She had so much fun with it, she scratched around it, manage to get some hay in it, then tried every way she could come up with to sit in it. Xiao Liwu came in, but she does not share her toys either, it was fun to watch. Maybe there is a video, very cute. BTW it is still in the den, not sure it has much use now, it looks pretty beat up!
Photo series was not just a fluke, Bai is one of the biggest kids on the block!,

Does this comment belong to something that got lost. It’s in a very odd place given the timestamp it has. It’s always at the end of the blog.
seems to have lost it’s way and became its own post since I know I clicked on the REPLY in Grammie’s post.
I wonder if this one is also going to be its own post when it should be a reply to mine.
If it does, mods just delete this one and the other one that is mine mentioned in this reply.
Thank you.
While typing on my tablet one of my fingers hit something wrong (goodness only know what) and that comment sat there for a while. It is rotten getting old. I was referring to the series of 6 photos in the last comment section, where Bai Yun took the inner tube toy from Yun Zi and tried to sit in it. Then somebody mentioned that she tried to sit inside the bowl she brought into the den this early morning. I have no idea how to do it again if I wanted to. Us older folks need someone to invent a stylus to use in place of fingers, we just get worse, and I do love my tablet….love grammmie
Grammmie – someone did invent a stylus so you do not need to use your finger(s). Send your son out to get you one if you have access to Big Lots or Five Below, you can get one for $5.00. Or check online, you might get it cheaper. Just make sure that package says it can be used on ipad.
Thank You Jusy, I will put him on the trail, and tell him no food until you find one. The stores mentioned do not sound familiar, but then I do not get out much! Somehow I will find one. IT will be nice to have some measure of control when chatting about Mr. Wu.
Have you noticed how cautious he is in his movements. I was just watching a few minutes ago and was sure he would topple the Green Thing in the empty pool, but as soon as it was unsteady he moved to another spot to touch it. I would love to see his face when he throws caution to the wind, and it really moves. Must go watch some more, and today the laptop comes out to start working on my emails…..love grammmie
Grammmie, if you have a Best Buy close, they have stylus’. The difference between one for an ipad and one for a pda is the ipad stylus has a rounded soft rubber or foam looking tip while one for a pda is hard and pointed. Packaging will tell which are appropriate.
Thank you Jane….and my JUSY too…..within 10 minutes he had it ordered for me, and it is on it’s way. He even managed to find something to order for himself too. Of course the first thing he said was “those will not work on iPADS, but I told him about Jusy recommending it, please give it a try. The shakiness will get nothing but get worse, and I have a lot of Panda watching to see and comment on. My inhaler contains a steroid, lots of shaking then, this will help a lot…..thank you too all comment readers who impart great stuff here. Love grammmie
Well, there are two types of stylus. I hope he ordered the right one for you. That’s why I mentioned the description for the stylus should say it can be used on iPads.
If we want to get technical, you want capacitive stylus. The tip is special so it acts like your finger.
I hope you get it soon
Can’t be too soon for me. When I thought my messages were not getting to the zoo computer I decided to cruise around my tablet and found my email may not be exactly the same, but I can do it here. This means I can spend time on emails, then hop right over to the really good stuff……our SDZoo panda family in all of the pandacam glory. The new HD cams are so much better it is worth it to work on identifying each bear so that we can manage without the identifying numbers. Do spend some time looking for identifiers that work for each of you. Remember the zoo Facebook has many pages of photos from many people, they will help…….love grammmie
Yes he was good about that, thank you Jusy. Now if we could just get it here so I can continue having fun watching our pandas. I check the cam first to see who is showing off then I do everything else..love grammmie
Yes, they have these at Amazon.com. I just bought a pack of six… They are really nice!
I am surprised she didn’t try to wear it like a hat. You surely noticed her goofiness-yes? That kind of being goofy is why the comatose Panda did not show residual effects of his huge fall. Hurray for the keepers, staff, etc. who constantly massaged him to keep his blood flowing, giving him the one chance he had to recover. Long goofy life to him! ! ! ! Love grammmie
She did try to wear it as a hat! I was so tickled I just didn’t get it all in. If anyone has a video of it, it is worth seeing, the complete event was very funning. Glad I got to see this funny side of her.
That is why I put the series of the “inner tube” tousle so you could see her quite ample bottom trying to fit inside it. I hope you enjoyed them….love grammmie
I don’t know how I missed it, I will try to find it, how far back is it?
It is in the previous blog. I was having trouble w/ copy and paste so I did one complete link, then gave the numbers between / and the next / to make it easier for me. There is one full link, then 5 numbers following. Of course there is lots of gabbing at the top, and more on the bottom, because that is what I do. If I am able to get an estimate of how far down (or up) to look I will post it below, just look for me from the bottom up on this blog. Love grammmie p.s. Bai looks really funny.
There is something strange looking in the den this early morning. Does anybody know what it is? If you look at the den you can’t miss it….love grammmie
Moderator’s note: Food pan.
I would have guessed–well heck, I thought it was a ball without the air in it, TY.
Just looked in on the elephant cam and noticed it’s raining down in San Diego! Sure hope this doesn’t put a damper (no pun intended
) on the public debut event today… ;-(
Was Ron Burgandy there with the other reporters?
LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL.——–when we had that movie come out we just mhappened to have Paul Bloom, and Dennis Morgino manning the anchor spots at one of our local new stationed…darned good looking men with mustaches looking very like Ron!!!!! Lol love grammmie
Bravo Mr. Wu. You are very nice!
And you are nice too!
Wu Wu
Oh my Mr. Wu is a very dirty little boy
I think he likes it outside!!! <3
at 8:08 AM, viewing a very adorably muddy Xiao Liwu… SO CUTE! Big
Mr. Wu and Bai Yun are going to be such a joy to watch. Can’t wait!
Like father, like son! Xiao Liwu seems to love his tub of hay!
And Fay, did you notice his big feetsies when he was on top of the climbing structure???…if we could get some long hair on them he would be a real daddy’s boy! Love grammmie
I am so excited to watch Liwu but my video is not quite working right, I get a picture but it just keeps going round like it’s trying to connect.
Any suggestions on settings that I may need to change?
Moderator’s note: Just keep trying. There could be a lot of Panda Cam traffic this morning.
Cathy, keep refreshing the page, you’ll get it.
When you are a little kid, even a piece of yellow leaf can be very entertaining!
Aww, remember those days?
Here is the screen capture that should have gone with my comment above!
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/iacuPeAxjEZxOJYB4BrWb5ti6N9pyZSaC1YNJHxrT28?feat=directlink
What a dirty little panda !!! oh so cute !!!!!!
Mr Wu the cutie pie is playing in the moat. Oh how much I wish I can hold him!
Thank you Xaoi Liwu for demonstrating you ability to get into, and out of the moat. I feel very secure knowing that you are safe in case the NannyKeepers are busy having their “boo” lunch break, or their “boo tea” for their breaks. If in doubt call momma, but that might include a BAFF. I hope you have Yunnie help you write. A story about your press interview and song, did you sing for your greatest fans came to see you on a cool wet day? Be sure to keep your throat warm so you can sing in the right key. Perhaps in the near future there will be “The Panda Grrrls and Prince Wu”,how does that sound-joining an established group? Love auntie grammmie
Well, it looks like Mr Wu’s first public outing is going to be a big SNOOZE. He looks like i Pandapine today doesn’t he. What a wonderful way to start my day. Thanks SDZ.
Congrats to our little man. He’s so brave. And he is all over the local news here in Sacramento. Mr. Wu, can’t wait to see you.
Dear Moderator,
Fascinated by the ‘shifting’ process and teaching Xiao Liwu how to follow it. Did Bai willingly leave the exhibit yesterday with XLW still in the moat so that a keeper could retrieve him? Did Bai try to coax him up before the keeper’s took over? Thank you!
Moderator’s note: She willing left the exhibit.
This reply touchs my heart in a big way. What a compliment to the keepers that Bai has so much trust in you that she would return to her rooms knowing that XLW is safely in your care. The thoughtful relationship building is, no doubt, so much deeper than one could understand from the ‘outside’. A true testament to these precious animals and the skilled and dedicated staff at SDZ. This must be so much more than a ‘job’ for all of you and it is evident everywhere one looks. Congratulations and admiration from all of us.
Xiao Li Wu is cute as ever wandering back and forth around the moat and wall area. I don’t think he inherited Bai’s teflon gene tho (may have rained overnight). think he’s settling down for a nap in the moat.
Mr. Wu looks wet and cold! (1/10/13) Can he get sick????
Moderator’s note: This weather is made for pandas. No worries!
When Xiao LiWu was down in the moat yesterday, why did the keepers have to get him and not Bai Yun. Did she not know where he was, or was she more intrigued with the food that she loves?
Moderator’s note: The Panda Team was ready to close the exhibit for the day, so they asked Bai Yun to shift to the bedroom areas, which she did, and then picked up the sleeping cub.
Awe…precious little cubbie. He slept there a long time.
I was wondering if they had to go out and get him. I have many fond memories of the keepers in Washington doing that almost everyday when Tai Shan was a cub. So sweet at this age. oh yes.
Never wake a sleeping Cub.
Xiao Liwu and Bai Yun appeared in North Exhibit before zoo opened so employees were able to see him.
Wasn’t it nice that they let the Panda Cam fans in, too?
130110 Xiao Liwu: 1st Public Day – Before They Showed Up
http://youtu.be/zdA-Pc0gK90
Jusy: I REALLY appreciated that too because I was afraid he would be sound asleep by 9:30 AND I could not watch the cam at that later time unfortunately. So what a delight to tune in and see our little Liwu exploring all around the exhibit.
He certainly was dirty! (I wonder if he got a baff later on…
)
A very dirty Mr. Wuu. He is in the same spot as yesterday. Im guessing he loves the outdoors
He is a dirty little boy today!
Looks like Mr. Wu has settled in for a long winter’s nap. He was having so much fun during his debut, he just exhausted his little self. So cute.
Meet MudMuffin, son of Studmuffin!
You do have a way with words. Made me smile BIG.
Good one, Renee!!!
Lol…great nick name! Are we sure Bai Yun didn’t give the cam a whack to take it offline so no one could see how ‘muddy’ little Wu is today? yesterday his face was clean but today he’s covered from head to toe…hehe..so precious but mama might not think so!
So lucky
That’s worth a whole handful!
NO PANDA CAM
Moderator’s note: We’re working on getting Panda Cam back online.
Panda Cam come back!!!!!
It’s 9:30am 1-10-13 and Mr. Wu is in a tree, but there is no way to use the photo picture. Where is the camera?
Thanks!
Diane of Lincoln, Ca. It depends on the tools you are using. If I had my laptop I can snap all I want, but not on mly tablet….I need to get my laptop back in use….love grammmie
Grammie, I think you said your son got you an iPad. see if this article helps you with screenshots: http://ipad.about.com/od/iPad_Guide/ss/how-to-take-ipad-screenshot.htm
M_W: If it didn’t help Grammie, it sure helped me — thanks for the link and info!
Thank you, I will study it and see what to do. I sure do like the lightness of my mini, and I can take it with me so easily….love grammmie
Grammie, I’ve taken loads of screen shots of these sweet pandas with my ipad. You just press down the home key (that little circle you see at the bottom of your screen …. Near the charging port). While you are holding that down, you press the on/off button real quick. It’s the one on the top edge, toward the right side. Voila! You can send the pic real easy in an email, Facebook, etc. after that bc the pics are automatically saved in your photos!!! Apple can walk you through it if you give em a call too. happy snapping!
Thank you Sawn, I will give it a try. Thanks to everybody who tries to help old grammmie with these magical things. I guess I need to transfer my email to here, since for two weeks every day was a “going to get the laptop out and running day”. I just hate to think of all of the mail I will have to read……….and the ones that I can delete without opening. But if somebody was nice enough to email me, that aren’t trying to sell me stuff, they at least deserve my attention…..love grammmie
Wu is so cute, but making me so nervous climbing so high up and unsure of how to get down.
Giant Panda cubs climb trees in the wild, and I will bet since the trees are under Mother Nature’s care that the cubs climb high and fall out of them regularly. No safe climbing structures designed by Mom Nature. You get what you get!
amazing how the keepers trained Xiao Li Wu to wake up and climb up the tree just in time for his public debut ; ) he was just getting his beauty rest. he will keep crowds enraptured with his Evel Knievel moves. don’t fall baby, so many hearts could not handle the anxiety.
Awwwww….. I wish I was there to see him…
I hope everything is ok with Mr. Wu….saw him climbing then disappear…and then no cameras….
Wish he knew that there are so many of us who love him we’ve crashed the system !!!!!!
HELP! I have been trying and trying for the past hour or so to connect to Mr. Wu’s cam but to no avail.
Moderator’s note: Is Panda Cam working for you now, AC?
Thanks Moderator, it’s working now.
Moderator’s note: Happy viewing!
Very disappointed that the cam always seems to go out when a big event is taking place. Have been trying to get on for over an hour now and no luck. It is 1:18 pm here on the east coast so I am not to early. Hopefully we will get a video later to view but it is not like the real thing.
Moderator’s note: Can you view it now, Anne?
Anne in Pa. I need a nap so. I will turn mine of for a while. I don’t blame you for wanting to watch them, both are as lovely in color as they are in black and white. Wu was exploring to the top of the climbing structure this morning. Olive grammmie
They’ve been back for awhile. Bai looks so contented right now — muffin butt hasn’t moved a muscle since they’ve been back.
yay, cam back up. Xiao Li Wu looks like he is taking a nap somehow wedged in the structure where he seemed unsure how to get down. Bai is also napping in the structure reminding me a lot of Yun Zi’s favorite sleeping position (belly and head hanging down through the branches)
Can you tell me how Xiao Liwu who was napping in the moat before the public showing got from there to the top of the tree? It seems the cam was down at that time. Did Xiao Liwu wake up and do it all by himself or did Bai Yun get him?
Thank you.
Also, did Bai Yun give him a quick baff as he seems to be a lot cleaner?
Yes she did
Wu Wu
Hello Moderator, I have a question for you (or the panda team).
See this screen capture from the panda cam:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/3v9umDkxZU1QFzo3TJ_uWpti6N9pyZSaC1YNJHxrT28?feat=directlink
What’s the green object circled in the picture? Thanks!
Moderator’s note: It is a strap that can be used to attach enrichment objects.
Is there a time of day that is best to visit to see some pandas in action?
Moderator’s note: At the Zoo, morning is best for the cub. On Panda Cam, early morning for the cub.
It’s great to see Xiao Li Wu getting so big. I wish I could see him in person.
On another note, a couple questions. Yun Zi is such a big guy now. How soon are we going to have to say goodbye to him when he goes back to China? Is there any word on that yet . . . or do we get to ejoy him a bit longer? Does anyone know how our pandas are doing in China?
Moderator’s note: No word yet on Yun Zi’s future.
My video seems to be stuck with the circle indicating loading spinning in the middle of a still picture.
Moderator’s note: Try refreshing the page.
Here is the edited footage from this morning in Panda Canyon
Xiao Liwu kept going to his tub, but it wasn’t to take a bath

Thank you for fixing the Panda Cam stream!
Dear Moderator,
I’ve been trying to adopt a panda all day, but the site is not working. Could You kindly explain why.
Moderator’s note: I’m sorry, kristina. It’s working for me. Perhaps you can call 619-557-3914 if it still is not working for you.
The first time I saw the bears”enclosures I was surprised at the paucity of space. Now it seems your contstruction has gone awry and instead of space they have a jungle. Run and play. Baby pandas in Chin.Space and playthings for outdoor activities. San Diego-contruction gone to a junk yard. Yunza used to have some places to go to hide, to rest from the crowd. This visit he was In a postage stamp space and bored, and clmbing over junky clutters.
Please give up construction. Soon they will be able only to sit up and live.
Heart broken story, I didn’t know, poor Yunior …
It’s inaccurate to describe the exhibit as a “junk yard,” which implies broken, discarded objects (i.e. trash). The zoo and keepers have done a great job accommodating the needs of all their giant pandas and should be commended for their efforts to ensure a safe and enriching environment.
Thank you, Trina for your comments. You said it better than I would have.
And thank you to all the staff at the Zoo, who I am sure have been run off their feet the past week or so, getting all this ready for the debut and dealing with all the increased traffic, etc. You are to be commended.
Now Nkw, no one demeaned the keepers. Yunzi had a space that was good for him. Now he does not do much if anything. he needs to get encouragement from the visitors to play ball, and do tricks, he loves that, and ,move, move, move around. Sorry you are so fussed about my comments. I love him and want him happy, not bored.
Hi Moderator,
Do you think that Mama Bai is sleeping in the tree near Mr. Wu because she is protecting him just in case one of those people with the cameras try to get near him? One minute she is batting him away and the next all cuddly, so cute.
i have watched yun zi and now mr. wu since their birth, but no matter how many times they have “plopped” down to earth during their climbing adventures, i still gasp – “oh no, is he ok???”
i guess i wouldnt make a good panda mom (“please do not climb trees”).
Hello, are your camera people requested to follow Bai Yun rather than Baby Wu?
The big debut is today and from noon your time for the past 15 min so far Baby Wu has been moving around and trying to get down from his perch but the camera operator is focused on Bai Yun and trying to locate her the entire area with no close up on Baby
It’s about 12:20 Pacific time and a worker was cleaning Mr. Wu’s area, while the cub was resting on a tree branch. Of course the worker made frequents stops to “communicate” with Mr. Wu –which was so great for us Panda Cam
viewers! However, the cam operator switched to Yuni or Gao Gao eating.
We ALWAYS see the pandas eating but rarely get to see a worker interacting with the cub – live. Why the switch?
Moderator’s note: The keepers prefer to work off camera.
Yikes how did he get way up there? I can’t look! I can’t stop looking! I can’t look. Oy.
PLEASE GET THAT BABY OUT OF THAT TREE, HE HAS BEEN THERE ALL DAY.
Moderator’s note You might rest assured after reading a post about Zhen Zhen when she was small: Reaching New Heights.
Does Bai Yun ever interact with Xiao LiWu while they are out like this. I have yet to see her anywhere around him. Unless they were together during the cam down time.
Moderator’s note: Keep watching…
Watching Xiao Liwu he has had such a hard morning that he has now fell asleep again. He is so cute. I watched when the keeper cleaned the enclosure and he was sitting in the tree and she was talking to him what a good job she has.
OMG, the cuteness of this little guy is endless!!
I try to watch my panda cams at work, all day … now, with adding regular/daily shots of XL and his mom into the mix, how WILL I get anything done at work?!?!?
I can’t believe how much happiness this little guy causes to happen ……… thank you SO much for this site, the cams, and all the work that y’all do!!!
Hi: If someone could help me I’d really appreciate it. My old computer crashed and while I now have another one available to me I’m not able to take pictures any longer. The camera feature does appear and top of screen but when I click on it nothing happens. HELP!! Thanks so much.
Close your browser, restart you browser, then try again.
Charlene I had the same problem on my laptop, if my view was maximized I had trouble, I couldn’t get the names in the areas. I found that if I copied and pasted the names it was fine. That reminded me that I could snap faster if I used copy and paste all of the time……..since I send most of them to myself. I hope this helps, but the browser thing is probably better advice (I am not too sure what it is).
This is for Grammmie and of course anyone else… if you really want to know:
Browser is short for Web Browser. A Browser is a software program/application used to go onto the World Wide Web/www. As you know, you can do many thing once you are there, such as going to: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/ to view the beloved Panda Bears! Examples of Browsers are Apple Safari/Safari, Mozilla Firefox/Firefox and Google Chrome/Chrome, there are many more. That is it in a nutshell.
Sometimes we keep our computers up with browser going for very long times, without closing and restarting them and the cache gets over loaded, things happen (updates, etc). So as a start, I suggest to close the browser, wait a few minutes, restart browser and try again. There are other things to do if that doesn’t work, but usually this is all that is needed. Workaround are just that, something for the moment, but you still need to get the issue corrected.
Grammmie, you are doing great, alway keep curious, the brain can handle it, so push it!
Love and Panda Bears Hugggs,
Beverly
TY-Beverly
Oh, what a bonanza for the eyes today…between the new video of Bai swatting Mr. Wu off her back and making everyone laugh; then him posing so sweetly for the press; along with the the cam catching him as he rubbed the sun away from his eyes so he could nap on his branch…just adorable…SDZ…you outdid yourself today…thank you so much…
1:40 PM. If that isn’t the cutest thing ever: The camera folks are doing a good job of following our Mr. Wu who just found a pile of Bermuda hay. I thought he was going to snuggle down for a nap; instead he sat and nibbled on one of his hind feetsies! He IS just a toddler, after all, and that’s what they do.
Lou, Like father like son now all he needs is the tub
I just checked back in on Mr. Wu–which one of you nice folks let him know about me and feetsies—he was having his own little “little foot party” in the outdoor “tree den”. Such lovely, big clean feetsie—-thank you..love you….grammmie
Did you see him alternating between boo leaves and one of his feetsies when he was up in the tree, Grammie? He was doubled up a bit and one of legs was between him and the log in front of him. He almost seemed not to know who the foot belonged to as if “hey, where did this come fwum? He proceeded to sample the towsies. So darling.
Yes I did see that with great appreciation. Go Wu…love you baby!!!!
Cam unavailable….is it down again?
Moderator’s note: Yep.
I hope there are videos of cute stuff for today, the video hasn’t worked for me most of the time today. Lots of computer traffic I am sure.
Moderator will Little Gift be out in the exhibit daily now for a few hours each day? I know if he will be that he will look just as cute tomorrow as he does today and the video will most likely work tomorrow. Do you have an idea of the times he will be out in the exhibit? Thank you so much.
Moderator’s note: He is scheduled to be out daily from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., weather permitting.
One more video from this afternoon:
Our little cub shows us just how well he can climb down, and then he visits the little mini-Keebler tree

thanks, DoxieMom…you caught that precious moment when our darling found his feetsies!
On a gloomy day, where it should be sunny, there is nothing more pleasing to the eye than Yun Zi setting and reclining in his hammock having some bamboo dinner. BIG SMILE here in gloomy Phoenix.
Have any of the Nanny Keepers needed to rescue Xiao Liwu from the moat like they had to do with Yun Zi a few years ago ? Seems like yesterday !
Love see a panda fluffly backside slide down “the banister” er tree !
he is so boy and way too cute ! And yes of course all “babies” love to
chew on their toenails. yep he’s a keeper !
DoxieMom
Thanks for your fun and awesome videos !
You catch the best of our pandas especially Mr Wu !
He is very easy going and learns fast
Gotta love him Thanks again!
Jusy, .After I saw what happened I should have asked the mods to delete, I used reply, but dropped my tablet, and somehow it started a new post. If I had a brain I would be dangerous. Perhaps people as old as me should stay away from this new fangled stuff. Love grammmie
Please don’t stay away from the new fangled stuff, Grammmie.
OK Maggie—–but if I call for help about the “new fangled stuff” you need to be handy to help me…..OK??? Love grammmie
Now I see that the order of the posts is really messed up, do your best to figure it out, JUSY. Love grammmie
Oh, he is even more adorable in person. I was there first thing this morning and barely waited 10 minutes before I was staring right at Mr. Wu peering down on the public from his perch in the tree. He is even more adorable in person, as though that was even possible. Bai Yun looked radiant and very proud of her newest little one. I hopped over to see Gao Gao and Yun Zi after I saw mama and baby and they both seemed to just be enjoying the cool weather and relative peace and quiet. Thank you for sharing this little gift with the world- he truly is that!
MR. Wu you are soooooo stinkin’ cute!! So very happy for your debut today. I am so excited to be coming to San Diego at the end of June tobe able to come and see you! Keep building those muscles, but stay cute! Congrats SDZ!!! Great day for the Zoo!!!
Thank you.
Wuv,
Wu Wu
Thank you SDZ, bloggers for all the postings and video contributions. We really enjoyed catching up on Xiao Liwu’s public debut day. The little tyke still knows how to work his adoring fans
. Yunnie is teaching him very well!
Since Little Wu is more out and about doing more exercises, is he able to nurse/feed sufficiently to sustain his energy? It is just that he seems to still be in the smaller side in weight. I am not sure I have seen him nursing much on any of the videos or perhaps maybe just don’t see him nursing.
Also, since he is out there more in a new environment and more exposed to new elements, will the SDZ staff do more “special” examinations to make sure he does not contract any undesirable elements that can cause illness? Is he still in a “delicate” health phase that needs to be closely monitored? It is just that he and his other siblings are too precious.
Moderator’s note: As he’s had his vaccinations, we don’t worry too much about germs these days.
Grammie, as another “older one” on this blog maybe Bai needed some relief from, um, you know, relief on her bottom?
(In human words it’s called a “medical donut”
Do you think that was was she was going for? Tee hee hee. Pandas are as smart as cats and can bounce down from trees the same and land on their feet. Oops maybe I should say that cats are as smart as Pandas!
People were somewhat cranky on this blog today. Not cool. This is a place for us to share in our love for pandas. There are many other blogs in this great internet universe to be cranky on. Save it for that! Do not bring that kind of attitude here.
That being said…thank you again Doxie for showing me that he knows how to get down from high up places! As one said above in the posts, I would also be a terrible panda mommy. I look forward to your videos every day.
My first “panda obsession” started withYun Zi….but I did ask lots of questions. It turns out my favorite photog has photos going back through all of the cubs, and along with that I discovered archives here to read lots from…..yes even the comment sections too. Often that is where I find some great links to photos, videos, and tons of information. Some of the reading was done through an illness that affected my memory, but not all. I try to cover myself with “if I am not mistaken” etc., bless the moderators who help me remember correctly. Love grammmie
I tuned in the first time today to see Mr Wu sleeping in the moat and then again when he was climbing and now after a hard day he is sleeping again in the den. He is just too cute. I even got to see Bai rub the log all over her with I believe was wintergreen oil. Bai really loved that scent.
Thank you to all the keepers for all that you do to keep the pandas happy and all the other animals too.
Can you upload more videos for people who don’t have a chance to visit SD zoo? Please, these clips are too short and precious to me
Dear Andy;
If nobody in your family knows how to capture videos from the cam the way dear Doxiemom does, you need to find a friend, neighbor, family member, or whomever to teach you or your family how to. That is if your family has no objection. Then you could make your own videos of the Panda Cam when you cannot watch them. In the meantime look for posts to this, and back logged archives of anything Doxiemom has has posted…..most of them have some of the best stuff to see, since she has already edited out the dull “nothing to see” parts. Some videos are very short, but usually they seem to be around 10 minutes long. I hope this helps you to find some things to watch Mr. Wu enough to satisfy your needs. Some of us cannot get enough of watching, we know how you feel. Perhaps some of our fellow commenters will have some ideas too. Be sure to check back a comment section or two when you have posted something, since the answers usually match the post you need to check back when the Zoo puts up a new upper portion of the blog.
Love grammmie
I, too, loved the fireman shimmy down the tree and the fascination with his toes!
What is this fascination the Gao boys have with their “feetsies” ? Do not get me wrong, I love it watching them count their toes, and then taste them, I wonder if this is an All Cub thing, or mostly the boys, mostly Panda action, or all small flexible mammals that have toes???
Love grammmie
HUman babies like to taste their own toes as well. At early young age, ligaments/muscles/joints are flexible enough for such endeavor, be it panda cub or human baby.
What a great debut! Thanks to SDZ and all there who make it possible for us to see the little man and big momma strut their stuff. Loved that the little guy got so dirty. It’s good for pandas as it’s good for human kids. Thanks too to Doxiemom and grammie for all they do to enrich our experience.
Hi and greetings from Australia
It was wonderful watching the public debut of Mr Wu – what a confident little man – nothing seems to bother him – he is just adorable. i don’t think we will ever see him clean-he is so attracted to dirt. Thank you nanny keepers, panda cam operators, doxie and most of all Bai – such a smart mummy.Cheers to all of the wonderful pandafans from all over the wotld
i saw Little Gift’s ball in the tub of grass today, I wonder if they could put it out in the empty pool to see if he still loves it. It couldn’t get away from him there and might be really fun to watch. Just a suggestion. Thanks
Dear Moderator (again),
The adoption has succeeded; I had a wrong verification number in the payment. So now I’m a happy brand new panda adoptive mother.
Moderator’s note: Congratulations, mama kristina! And thank you for helping our animals with your adoption.
At 6:55 PST, they are both in the den covered by bamboo. Only occasional movement gives away their presence. Amazing camouflage.
The cutest thing I’ve ever seen. He’s an independent little chap, isn’t he? Makes me want to hop on plane from the UK and take my place at the fence!
It’ll be interesting to see how supermum Bai will clean him up for his next outing. She’s going to have her work cut out with his ‘bafs’ if he gets this dirty every day. I love her laid back attitude though. Cuffing him off her back as she ate her boo in front of the world’s press is relaxed, confident motherhood par excellence!
MSN has 3 of most beautiful pictures of Mr. Wu They brought me to tears he really is a photographers dream
Here is the page on MSN. The pictures are indeed fabulous!

Thanks for posting these
Adorable dirty panda
Poor Bai, so embarrassed
“But mama what;s a woo woo to do do? They said to wook gowgeous so I twied. And I can’t give myself a baff.”
Well, young man, the lessons start now.
“Oh, hewp! Mr. Photogwofer, hewp! No baff pweeze, mama. He he he that tickles.”
Thanks for the info and for the link. The pictures really capture the princeling’s character – mud and all. Missy Bai will probably not appreciate this but I think it makes him all the more adorable.
Thank you Jane for posting the link. Absolutely adorable pictures of the little guy.
Jane, you are right. The pictures speek for themselves. What a dirty “little gift”! But just like boys little Wu seems to thorougly enjoy himself.
‘Congrats, babay bro, you were magnificient! Your charm offensive was awesome. You must have gained a million new fans!’ and with that Yunior sweeps his brother up and spins him around.
‘Wheeeeee, Woooooooooooooo, Wooooooooooo!’ yells Wu Zi as he lifts his paws as though he is flying, ‘I am Supersonic Wu Wu!’
As Yun ZI puts his brother down, he stares in mock horror. ‘Mama, how could you? There is a dirt spot on Wu Zi’s forehead and here on his tushy too!!’
‘WHAT! A SPOT OF DIRT! DIRT! WU WU needs a BAAAFFFF!’ declares Bai Yun in a mock operatic voice and she adopts a grieved look.
Wu Zi looks at his mama in fear, ‘Mama….mama….please…..’
Bai takes a step towards Wu Zi and plants a kiss on his face, ‘Mama wuvs her Wuuuuuu Wuuuuuu Wuuuuuu dirt and all. A little dirt won’t hurt you. Mama and Papa are so proud of you for doing so well. Did you hear Aunty Kathy? She said you were the first cubby to go out on your own. You were brave and fearless!’
Gao Gao grins from his reclining chair, ‘That’s my boy!!! Brave and fearless. All our cubbies are amazing. My boys have their old man’s charm.’
Bai Yun rolls her eyes and shrugs her shoulders. Yunior turns to Wunior, ‘YOU are now the STAR of one of the most popular reality show, the SDZ Panda Cam.’
‘Woo Hoo!’
just an observation…….ebony and ivory (bear) together in perfect harmony…..congrats to sdz for their beautiful home for bai and fluff butt….
Being the star of the most favorite reality show is great, especially when it IS a realty show, and not just a new way of using real people to make something and CALL it reality.
I would have to say that these pandas are my favorite family…….each one different, but all the same inside…..it is always fun to watch them, except when it causes hearts to bound into throats. This morning I thought he was being timid, and then heard he fell in the moat, and watched the videos of his dangerous side on the High Log. Wu Wu Wu—what to Do Do Do???
Hi Gaile—–this comment ended up here instead of the space above…I suspect typist messis uppith. Love grammmie
I know that the excitement of Mr. Wu’s first days out is still fresh in our minds, but is there anything planned for Gao Gao’s “anniversary” next week?
Moderator’s note: It will be a low-key event, but keepers are planning to give him some extra-special treats to honor the day he arrived at our zoo.
Wonderful! Is there a set time? I would love to come see him enjoy his treats.
Moderator’s note: I don’t believe so. Knowing Gao Gao, he’ll probably be enjoying those treats all day!
I assume it will be tomorrow, the 15th?
Cam not working again, just when it’s time for Mr. Wu!
With Mr Wu climbing and sleeping outside now
seems hours without nursing. is this normal?
Is this normal or is Wu eating his leafs?
How long can he go without nursing?
Thank You
Moderator’s note: It is all very normal for a panda cub this age to go for many hours without nursing. Milk is still his primary nourishment; leaves and leaf eater biscuits are just fun to mouth at this age.
MR. WUU IS MAKING ME REAL NERVOUS RIGHT NOW. I KEEP SITTING ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT.HE KEEPS WALKING BACK AND FOURTH ON THAT TREE LOG AND THEN ENDS UP IN THE PILE OF MOAT. HE KEEPS LOOKING OVER IM SO AFRAID HE IS GONNA FALL OUT. HE IS NICE AND CLEAN THIS MORNING
10:00 am…Please please please don’t fall my lil’ baby Mr. Wu! Take it nice and easy!!!!! much <3
Dear Xiao Liwu;
I wanted to send you a thank you note. My wife has been going through some difficult times recently. You have been her savior. She feels better when watching you on your webcam. She smiles from ear to ear when watching your weekly checkup videos (and smiles are hard to come by recently). One of the highlights of her life was going to see you in person today. Whether you realize it or not, you have made a huge difference to our family.
You’re the BEST,
Panda Family
Moderator’s note: Thank you for sharing, Panda Hubby. We hope our pandas continue to bring your family joy!
Dear Panda Hubby,
My brother was so touched by your letter. Mama, Papa, Wu Wu and I wish your wife all the best and thank you for watching us, especially Wu Wu.
Much love,
Yun Zi
Yes your panda cam has gotten me through a bad times 3 years ago wth my mom but it was Yun Zi. The cam has touched more lives then you may ever no so please keep up the good work you make such a difference. Thank you to all
Hello, Panda Hubby, whenever feeling under the weather I watch the panda cam and all the videos and read all the blogs. You are right pandas do bring a smile on your face no matter how bad you are feeling. It must have been wonderful for your wife and your family of course to see the pandas and particularly Mr. Wu live! All the best and greetings from Austria. Love, Ruth
Bai Yun and her baby sleeping in the climbing structure is such a blissful scene!
As we know, Gao Gao is a “grounded” bear. But Bai Yun doesn’t seem to mind resting in elevated spots (platform in the garden room and now the tree branches). So I guess age does not decide whether a bear likes to climb or not!
It seems to me (opinion only from reading blogs, etc.) that Gao is most interested in climbing only when his Lady Love Bai Yun is sending scents to him concerning her desire for a call or love letter from him, about every two years!!! I am sure there are other times, but few and far between. Love grammmie
I just saw precious Little Gift sleeping on a stump…and he is so beautiful… you could see him breathing peacefully and I just wanted to reach out and stroke his fur.
I love the HD camera.
I guess I’m going to have to settle for cuddling my kitties (who are sleeping right now and will not appreciate the loving).
What a STAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMGOSH!!!! Mr. Wu just fell!!!!!!!!!! IS HE OK????? :’(
Mr. Wu just fell down the incline. IS HE OKAY?
At 2:40 EST the cubbie was trying to climb down into the moat and then tumbled down and the camera operator switched to Yun Zi’s exhibit. Is the cubbie okay?
Oh no!!! Master Wu just fell down the cement steps to the moat. I hope he’s okay. Will someone check on him? That had to hurt.
Moderator’s note: There is plenty of cushioning at the bottom of the moat.
A question for the Keepers….have Bai Yun and Mr. Wu been using the “outdoor den” to sleep part of the night when we cannot find them on the cam? The mention of them “sleeping under the stars” made me wonder. Thank you..love grammmie
Moderator’s note: Currently, the pair does not have access to the north exhibit at night, so sleeping under the stars is done in the garden room.
Thank you. Did anyone ever tell you that you are the best moderators at our zoo??? Love grammmie
Moderator’s note: And the only ones!
Ok if lil Wu is only outside for 2 hrs..how do you prevent him from going out and what if mom wants out, doesnt he want to follow her? also when he is out, i didnt notice any water spots for him to drink, dont they need this? I hold my breath like we probably all do when he is up soooooooo high in the tree trunks.. thanks for bringing us such joy to watch
Moderator’s note: He is outside in the north exhibit much longer than the two hours it is open to Zoo guests. There are drinkers in the exhibit, but he gets most of his moisture from Mom’s milk.
Dear Nancy, that is why we get live cam of them for longer than 2 hours a day, and in color. If they were blocked indoors except for 2 hours a day the rest would be in black and white…..love grammmie
Actually they are out for several hours, but the Viewing is limited to around 2 hours.
Friday morning videos: The first one shows the close-ups of Xiao Liwu and the mini-Keebler, and how he got up there. The 2nd one shows off his climbing skills as he crossed back and forth over the log … and spent some time with his mother

Dearest, Best Videoagrapher,and wonderful DoxieMom……
As is expected the videos are great, wonderful, what would we do without them or you??? But the really big question is this……just how many ambulances were called for the Aunties and Unkas that watched him do his high wire act on the log to the top of the mini Keebler den top, because their hearts were in their throats. I even found my own slipping up a little until I realized Zennie will be making a trip here…..he is doing his high wire stuff to prepare for his trapeze work with her…it will be great to see her. Love grammmie
In the climb time video, about 3:49, XLW began to get into a precarious position. While Bai didn’t seem to be looking at him, she was obviously aware of every paw movement. She lowered a steadying arm down to him just as his rear legs seemed to be letting go and he looked like he might fall. Amazingly, she didn’t pull or lift, just gave him a steady until he had managed to get himself under control and then she withdrew her arm, almost without missing a beat. What an awesome snapshot of her confidence in him and her experience as a mother to know when trouble is at hand. Thank you DoxieMom for allowing me another look back at this encounter. I could just imagine LXW saying WOO WHEW..YOU CAN GIVE ME A BAFF ANYTIME YOU WANT MAMA after the rescue!
Thanks so much DoxieMom for the latest videos. I’d never get to see most of Mr. Wu’s antics if it weren’t for your videos. I do appreciate it so much. I know the pandy keepers tell us that he was made to bounce but – oY! it makes my feets and palms sweat to see him up so high … Take good care, Mr. Wu Wu!!
Oh, I had just tuned in when Mr Wu tumbled down the mote the the cam went to Yun Zi. I’m praying that little Wu is ok.
Moderator’s note: He’s just fine, JoAnn.
Went down 2 steps head first then tumbled… Is he OK?
Moderator’s note: Yep. Soft landing.
Thankyou Moderator
Can you talk about how the pandas get clean…do they bathe in water pools, do you provide them a shower or does the fur tend to shed it off. They are certainly rolling in the dust enough…I know sometimes its the scent
Moderator’s note: We don’t bathe them, but they can go in their pool, rub against shrubbery, or wash themselves off just like cats do.
I saw Mr. Woo fall down the side of the rocks. I guess it is true that baby panda bears bounce. Are you sure he is ok? That looked like a long way to fall.
Moderator’s note: Yep! It’s not that far and is very cushioned at the bottom. We wouldn’t put the cub out there if we thought it would be dangerous for him.
Thank you, just watching him fall and being a mom I just wanted to double, triple check. You all are fantastic.
So glad he is ok – I saw him fall as well (I am in the UK) and it’s the first thing I thought about this morning. How stressful….but how cute. So good he bounced !
I saw him fall too and it scared me half to death – it looked soooo far and cause of the camera angle I couldn’t see him land. I’m glad he’s alright I’ve been worried about him for about 7 hours now!
Goodness, there must be something in the bamboo. Yun Zi and Gao Gao both out like lights after eating. I guess a short nap in the afternoon never hurt anyone. In fact, I think I’ll go partake also of the Zzzzzz’s.
I just checked the cam to see the most beautiful sight of Yun Zi asleep on the Keebler tree top, with his lovely front feetsies crossed under his sweet chin. He is extremely handsome, hear that Panda Ladies who have daughters??? He wants to help with the cubbies when they come, and they will…….he did his first handstands in the den!!! He is a prince from a fine family, sweet tempered and cuddly. Get out the stud books ladies, he may be foreign born, but a great catch…..watch out for other mothers hot on his trail!!!!! Love grammmie
I didn’t see the big tumble today — must have been scary to watch, but the moderator has calmed our fears. These panda cubs must be tough little guys! Maybe this is why panda moms play so rough with them all the time– to toughen them up so they can handle these falls and tumbles!!!
questions about Gao Gao – recently it seems like he spends more time eating the really thin and round bamboo stems. when I started watching, it seemed like he was mainly eating the bamboo culm (thicker stalk cut down for him). have the keepers changed his diet recently for his dental needs? is he still gaining weight? sometimes when sitting, he really looks like a mountain poppa.
Moderator’s note: Yes, to accommodate his aging teeth, he is given thinner bamboo pieces as well as fresh-baked bamboo bread. The Panda Team is satisfied with his weight.
Dear Moderator,
I am so curious about claws and climbing and ‘trees’. Do panda claws work like cat claws by sinking into the material they are climbing? Are the climbing structures made of some natural wood and some artificial as they appear? If so, what are the artifical logs made from so that they ‘climb’ like real wood? Watching XLW today made me wonder a LOT about gripping! Thanks so much.
Moderator’s note: Well, panda claws do not retract like cat claws do, but they are very strong and sharp. Our panda exhibits contain both real trees and logs as well as dens made of textured concrete.
I was so worried for Xiao Liwu the darling cub of Bai Yun this morning…
I saw him fall from very high, I held my breath that he did not get hurt… Then I remembered there is usually some kind of cushion in case he would fall…
Another time I saw his mom and her little sweet cub “Little Gift” up on branches, they look so beautiful together, Bai Yun is a good mom!!!!
Thank you all of you who work to make the opportunity for us fans to see the baby panda Xiao Liwu and his beautiful mommie Bai Yun….and all that work at the zoo for the animals, you are all such special people….
Oh no he fall down.I am glad he is ok
Beverly……I answered your question about Bai and the inflated ring that you asked about 1/3 from the top of this page. I am taking a quick check of about where in the last comment section. I will post here when I have it…..love grammmie
Lost another post in the middle of working on it………….
BEVERLY scroll up 1/3 of the way from the bottom of the page to find the post that has 2 fun pictures including a new hat for Bai. Then there are 6 of a struggle between Bai and Yunnie over a rubber ring. First there is a full link, then 2 through 6 are the numbers that get changed for the rest in sequence. The next set shows the dirt in all of it’s glory, except for a couple I have not located yet. Enjoy…love grammmie
I think I saw Mr. Wu take a header down the wall today at around 12:30 or 1:00 CT. Did he fall far? Any damages??
I did not hear of him breaking any of the concrete “steps”.
is there a pooped lil panda around the zoo tonight….i bet the panda keepers are pooped pups as well….what a show…..you all deserve a lil r and r now right?…..lol i am just loving bai yuns beautiful ears…..i know it sounds crazy but when she eats or bathes fluff butt they just look so cute when their moving….and when you look right at her face they look like…. well ……just beautiful thats all…..
Have you noticed that they get rounder, closer together, and etc. when viewed from behind when she wants to play, or is getting into mischief??? Especially when she is starting to give Mr. Wu a BAFF?
Why isn’t Mr. Wu in the den tonight? Where is he?
Somebody above asked about a blue thing hanging around a branch of the climbing structure in the exhibit where Priceless Prince Wu and his lovely mom, Empress Bai Yun are in residence. I have found a really short video of two enrichment items hanging from it. The blue stick contains some treats–or so I wears told, and Zhen Zhen is after the snackies….love grammmie
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kjdrill/4472578221/in/photostream
Grammie,
Thank you so much for posting this. What a hoot! And intelligent.
Thanks for posting this–how I miss our Zhennie!
How long before Mr Wu will get a chance to spend time with Yun Zi &/or Gao Gao?
Moderator’s Note: We have no plans to introduce Xiao Liwu to Gao Gao or Yun Zi.
ZZ was a star member of the family…..look for more videos of her on you tube, flickr, wherever you can hunt for them….and older blog comments too, you will be entertained for hours. Remember she is the one who liked to hang by her toes.,….but is always a lady…..love grammmie
First let me tell you I would never make a Panda mom if what I’m going to ask about is what Panda moms have to do.
When Bai pushed Li Wu off her back yesterday, Moderator said Bai was showing him who’s boss. I understand that….k
Still made me want to pick that sweet little darlin’ up and Hug him.
My question is~~Why did Bai knock him off to the ground when they were standing on that stone?
To me, it looked like he was trying to get close or under her (maybe to nurse) and that’s when she pushed him off to the ground.
After that is when he walked off by his little self, found that leaf and couldn’t eat that so he went on down into the moat and went to sleep.
Bless his heart.♥ This made me cry and it does now just thinking about it.
I was so glad to see them sleepng close together in the den last night.
I saw her put her paw out to help him on the branch today. So happy she did that!
Is that normal to treat him like she did yesterday?? (Thurs. Jan. 10, 2013).
Golly, I Love that little guy. So Precious. Would love to hug and “baby” him.
Thank you in advance for an answer.
another way to think about Bai’s swatting Xiao Li Wu while feeding is that when she eats, it’s for both her and to provide milk for Xiao Li Wu. so she probably does not want to play when she needs to eat. in the den, I agree that she is as protective as ever, even though XLW is gaining mobility and independence.
Dear mosaic_world, Jane and Maureen in Michigan~~
Thank ALL of you for your replies. I Greatly Appreciate you taking the time to write.
I have no doubt we all Love Li Wu Wu and feel very protective towards him or lol we wouldn’t be here watching him like we do!
You all have made me feel much better. He is such a precious little baby.
As I’m sure you do, I feel myself tensing up and gasping every time he climbs high and has a hard time figuring out how to get down. SO afraid he is going to fall.
Yep, I understand about Mama Bai and her food!
About the stone incident…that bothered me the most.
Thank you, Jane, for telling me about the treat. I didn’t realize there had been one there. I was just really shocked when I saw him tumbling off and onto the ground.
It’s almost “show time” for our little Star !!!!! ♥♥♥
Golly, hope he is a careful climber today!
Thanks again~~
puppygirl
Puppygirl: One other thing to keep in mind when you get disturbed by the way Bai Yun reacts to her cubbie is that we tend to judge from human terms. Theses are wild bears with no real human emotions to curb them. Bai nourishes her cubs and protects them, but she deals with her cubs without the compassion and sentiment we humans have for our precious little ones. She has done the same with all her previous cubs and none of them have suffered. We just tend to think they are suffering because we have those human emotions that mold our thinking. we just can’t impose that on wild animals as much as we adore them!
Dear Deborah S, Ruth and Grammmie~~
Thank ALL of you SO much for your replies ♥♥♥♥♥♥
That’s so sweet of all of you to take the time and I greatly appreciate it
Yes, I’m guilty of doing exactly what you wrote!
I’ve done this with all my puppy dogs. I do realize what you are sayig about the Pandas being “wild” and my puppy dogs are not lol
even though sometimes you would have thought so! They all were just Loved and “sweet spoiled”.
Guess I like to think Li Wu Wu is “sweet spoiled”. Love to watch him being Loved and played with at his exams♥♥♥
Some ppl say our puppy dogs don’t understand what we say. Have to disagree with that. I really wonder how much of what the Panda Keepers say do the Pandas understand???
I do understand what you are saying about Mommy Bai and her food and [that] she has to teach her babies the “ways” of Pandas.
Darling little Snugglepuf is just so adorable and I love him so much.
It’s like when he climbs high and has a hard time trying to get down, I want to reach thru the screen and lift him down so he won’t fall.
Like the first time we saw him fall, that broke my heart as I’m sure it did everybody. We were all so worried about him. SO relieved he was OK!!
Maye I’m a hopeless case! A friend asked me if I wanted to rescue him like that, what I would do when he weighs 200 lbs.? I told her I would prolly call the Fire Dept with a ladder and be blubbering “fireman, fireman, save my child”!!!
I’ve never followed Pandas before this sweet baby and he is in my heart♥
I’ll just have to learn and get used to Panda “ways”. Am working on it!!!
BTW~~I’ve had 6 puppy dogs. 4 were rescues. Only have one now.
I always felt if they went out in the rain, they would melt ! SO Sweet just like Sweet Li Wu Wu!!!♥♥♥
Thank ya’ll again~~
puppygirl
I remember rock incident that you are speaking of…her’s my thought. I have been learning from all who know her that Bai does not like to be interrupted when she is eating nor to share her food. The first swat behind her back was because Xiao Liwu was pestering her and wanting to play when she was eating. She also used her foot a few minutes later to keep him at bay.
Regarding the stone incident…there had been a red leaf eater biscuit on the stone that Xiao Liwu had carried off earlier. When Bai went to that spot, she was smelling the area to see if HER treats were there when he got between Bai and the odorous spot on the stone. She seemed to think he was going to get the invisible treat, so she moved him aside and he went over the edge. It was really all about no one stealing her food. She is a very loving mother but nobody messes with Miss Bai’s menu! Hope this makes you feel a little better.
Bai was eating, and NOBODY disturbs her while shes eating
She still loves Mr.Wu but she is teaching him panda lesson #1.
I agree, it is just a matter of educating him and letting him know that he must not disturb her while eating. Of course Bai, our super panda mom, does love her baby Wu the same as she has loved all her other ones. I think that sometimes we humans are inclined to compare the animals’ to our behaviour which is understandable, particularly since Wu is so adorable. But I guess we do need to keep in mind that even our loved pandas still belong to the animal kingdom. Love, Ruth
When Yun Zi was a couple of months older than Mr. Wu is now, he tried to hide a slice of apple from mom…..that got him accidentally thrown off the “stone throne” in the exhibit Gao Gao is in now. She really loves apples, and treats her cubbies equally……love grammmie
Mr. Wu is adorable. I wish I could hold him and give lots of hugs and kisses.
He is definitely a prince!!!
What a cutie! On January 12, I will be visiting the exhibit. Hopefully, the little one will be out and about so I can get a glimpse of him.
‘Ge Ge, what ish this?’ asked Wu Wu. Yunior was sitting on the sofa with some large posters.
‘I was looking at some maps.’
‘Maps?? What are maps?’
‘They are drawings that show places and countries. See this one is of America….see this red dot here?….That is San Diego where we are.’
‘WOW! And what are all the red dots for?’
‘It shows all the pandas in USA.’
‘Tell me, Ge Ge, show me?’
‘See here? That is Washington. Auntie Mei Xiang and Uncle Tian Tian live there. Their son Tai Shan went to China with Lani Ge Ge from Atlanta, which is here. Who is in Atlanta?’
‘I know I know, Auntie Lunnie and Uncle Yang Yang, AJ and Po live there now.’
‘Well done. Who is left?’ asked Yunior. Wu Wu’s face screwed up in deep concentration.
‘Uncle Le Le and Auntie Ya Ya in Memfis!’ yelled the wee one.
‘WOW, that means SDZ has the mostest pandas!’
‘And some of the oldest but don’t you dare tell Mama and Papa I said so. Anyway soon we are celebrating Papa’s Annibearsary, its the day he arrived in SDZ cs he does not remember his birthday.’
‘YAY, PARTY! I wuv a party. Is papa going to be on TV and will there be hoomans coming to take his photos? We cna take a photo with Mama and Papa.’
‘Wu WU, how shall we celebrate with Papa?’
‘Hmm, Ge Ge, dish ish somefink we must plan cos Papa is so amazing. Wu Wu needs a nap now to fink. Hee Hee!’
If the two boys plan and execute the party it will be some kind of wonderfully crazy….I can’t wait….love grammmie
Talk about timing. Just peeked in on the cam, saw the empty den and was about to do something else, when Liwu walked in, played with a long stalk of bamboo, turned a somersault and then walked out. Wonderful start to the day.
How nice our little guy put on a show just for you…..it is how they “hook us” and make sure we will keep coming back….love grammmie
MODERATOR–
I have just tried to post two entries and neither is showing up. If they appear, they are duplicates, so please just delete one of them.
Thanks, Mary
Mary from Brooklyn:
For the last couple of days I have had similar problems, but thought it was due to dropping my mini iPAW a couple of times, so the problem of things coming out of order are not you, it is somewhere between us and the zoo. I think we each blamed ourselves, because I cannot believe it is just you and me. Once the zoo hears of this I bet they track down the problem and see to it that it gets fixed. I found the posts I thought were missing were just somewhere else. Love grammmie. (You on the east coast, me in the greater San Diego area.)
A big THANK YOU to all of you helping me with information about a stylus for my tablet. Since Greg did not have the information of new things he thought what I have been wanting did not exist.
I thought some of the things I was posting were not getting there because somehow earlier ones were coming below my more recent posting, so I was not sure they were posting. Please forgive any duplications and etc. this may have caused.
Now I know about the problem I will try to post things more continuous and not mess up my lovely Panda Family. I have not been lucky enough to see anyone on the cam since yesterday afternoon, but I know there will be some later today-hey watch out…..I am glued to this thing! ! ! Love grammmie
Watching Gao Gao eat his boo, and I see how he has a problem breaking off pieces. I do know that he has had dental work done, but can they drill his back teeth to points again so they are not flat? Like when we get fillings, they remake the crevices in our teeth so we can chew. I feel bad for him…
I’m sad.
10:25 and no Mr. Wu.
CamZone One HELP!!!
(lol) Watching Mr. Wu playfully climbing around a tree….
I just realized why our kids’ “JUNGLE Jim’s” were named That !!
(lol) Watching Mr. Wu climbing around a tree….
I realized Why our kids’ “JUNGLE Jim’s” are called That !!
What a gorgeous boy!!
In one of the articles I read, it stated that Xiao Liwu was very different from Bia’s other cubs. In what ways is Mr Wu different from his siblings?
Viewing Liwu at 10:35 on top of the keebler tree which seems like a panda cub “crib” and basking in the sun after exploring and playing. Maybe he will snooze for a while and then play again… another hour perhaps till he goes back in the garden/den… It is so very peaceful and calming to see him resting…
Mama Bai, how proud are you of you little Wu?
I guess if I were the Sun, I would be shinning brightly on the cutest star Xiao Liwu too! So cute watching him get to this spot, a top the mini Kibbler taking a snoozzz!
Mod. Sorry, that should be: Keebler tree.
I was typing way to fast and didn’t catch it.
ty
Beverly you will see lots of typos here……sometimes I am in a hurry, or get interrupted, then forget to proof it. Love grammmie
Are we allowed to collectively say “WHEWWWWW”. He’s down for now.
BRAVO and CHEERS for whomever is on the camera today – I’m loving it!!!!!
Just catching up on the past few exciting days. What a time to be away on holiday. Looks as if all went well for Xiao Liwu on his 2 intro days. Now as I watch him near the edge of the moat (11.53am Sat) I see no sign of Bai Yun. Is she outside with him or is she elsewhere? Great camera work by those in charge and such clear pictures. Thank you SDZ.
Is it just me or does someone else see Gao’s beautiful brown fur on Xiao Liwu’s paws?
I have not so far, but would be really happy to see not only a cubbie with this feature, but it would be doubly good for it to be one of the boys. A girl bear would just have anything covering their nails or extra fur on feet bottoms waxed off when she visits the Fur Spa. The boys look upon those things differently, the furrier the better is their opinion of themselves, but like their ladies to have that nice clean look. Boys will be boys……love grammmie
I don’t know because I haven’t looked that carefully at XLW’s paws. but I currently believe that XLW is so small because he takes after Gao Gao. did you ever think that Gao Gao takes after Chewbacca from Star Wars?
Seeing Gao Gao and Bai Yun together on their mating tapes you might think she is Chewbacca, and he is one of the Ewok fellows. She is not only taller and longer, but out weighted him at mating time by about 50 lbs. He is quite a little fellow….love grammmie
Yes!
MO I just reread your question and found my mistake……you were talking about his furry paws, I was addressing the whole panda. Yes his feetsies look like he borrowed them from Chewbacca—-but Chewie never had a lady near him, except Leah, and she does not count….love grammmie
Sorry, this post landed in the middle of some earlier ones somehow, so reposting.
We are happy to see you back Lynn.
I am not sure if I asked you, or someone else…..is the female panda still insisting that she now be called Lady McBear? I think it is really cute. Do not dispair, in Singapore the lady bear calls her partner Onion Head. Love. Grammmie.
classic Grammie humor
Not grammmie humor, I am just passing on some from Bob T. Panda, and Lucilla. Love grammmie
Mama Bai
How proud are you of your little cutie…..he is a star
Having so much fun watching our little Mr. Wu, but find myself cringing every time he takes a tumble….again today when he rolled down into the the moat. Tough little bugger. I hope he handles things ok!
thanks for adding the video with the behind the scenes view of Xiao Li Wu’s debut. it was interesting to see the people behind the fence and the flashes. he did not appear phased from all the new things. I totally agreed with the keeper who said, I hope he doesn’t go into the moat. but now, when he’s napping in the moat, he looks just as cute and cozy as ever.
Awww….he is sound asleep in the grass. Is this the moat you speak of, where there are some sort of lines or steps? He looks so snuggly! Pretty cool that he quickly found a favourite resting place out there or did Bai put him there first and he kept going back?
Yes Debi, that is the moat….love grammmie
Little Liwu sleeping in the moat at 1:38 PM. so nice to rub his head gently
sweet dreams “Little Gift”! So precious!
I have been watching our little Mr.Wu since he was born. Now, when we can follow him outside I am getting nervous more and more about his safty. Yesterday he fell and just hour ago he fell down to the moat again. That was not fun to watch
I noticed that someone from ZOO staff just rushed to check on him. That means….this person was not sure about his safty either.Don’t you think would be good idea to put a temporary fence/ from the steepest site of the moat/ just to protect him from folling down ? Thank you very much. Nusia from Canada.
Moderator’s note: Please don’t worry, Nusia. The moat is padded at the bottom and is of no danger to the cub. We would never put our animals in an exhibit that posed a danger to them.
are panda cubs generally more flexible and better adapted to cushioning a fall than adult pandas? It seems the cubs tend to curl up and roll over like a ball a lot. So could this contribute to their good probably not getting hurt as much as other animals? Liwu’s older siblings seems to have had good experiences falling. I remember correctly, I recall Mei Sheng falling from a tree when he was older already and did not really get hurt.
Thank you SDZ for caring for Liwu and his family so much.. Those hay seems to give him comforting naps and of course, perhaps make a nice “pillow” for when he falls.
Here are Saturday’s videos highlighting 3 hours of Xiao Liwu being a very busy, curious, and fearless cub:
Highlights include climbing up the tree, playing on his platform, being adorable with enrichment (both man made and nature made), playing with a little tree, tumbling down the moat (look carefully and you can see the keeper’s shadow as she checks on him!), climbing out of the moat, spending time with his mother Bai Yun, and finally settling in for a much deserved afternoon nap.

Thank you very much to all those that have watched, shared and commented my videos … none of these would have been possible without the fantastic work being done by the SDZ
One more Saturday video ~ this time it takes place in the Garden Room!
2013-01-12 While Mommie Eats … in the Garden Room
http://youtu.be/p2mgHzR3NhQ
Once again whomever was (wo)manning the cam did an outstanding job on Saturday! Really appreciate it ~ thank you
Laughs … his going to the corner after mom pushes him away reminded me of the old children’t chant “nobody loves me, guess I’ll go eat some worms” – or something like that. Thanks for posting that video, DoxieMom.
Dear DoxieMom~~
Thank you for your videos!!
You do a SUPER job and I Love watching them.
Really do Appreciate you and your videos!
OH My, how we L.O.V.E. our darling Li Wu Wuuuu !!!! ♥♥♥
He has moved into my heart. ♥
puppygirl
DoxieMom: Thanks to you and SDZ for these great videos. I miss so much of this, and it is just wonderful to be able to see these clips you put together. It gives me such a boost! Xiao Liwu is just such a pleasure to watch as he explores and grows… sigh…
I just finished watching all the videos:
the ones from the media debut day and the ones from the public debut day.
What was the orange thing Li Wu was playing/trying to eat at the beginning of the first media debut day video.
When Li Wu was climbing the tree, my heart was in my throat the entire time;
I was afraid he was going to fall off it and hurt himself.
When Li Wu got himself all dirty and muddy from playing, does someone gives him a bath before he returns to his den?
Moderator’s note: The small orange things are leaf eater biscuits for his mother, although the cub likes to mouth them. The only one who gives the cub a bath is his mother. That’s HER job.
Mamma Panda gives him a bath when he is all muddy?
She licks him the same way a Mamma Cat licks her kittens?
I didn’t know Panda do that.
thank you moderator/ videocam operators for zooming in on the precious cub! so nice and close! Thanks!
BRAVO and many thanks to whomever was on the PandaCam today – love it!!!
Oh what a day Wu had today. I had so much fun watching him. He got him self so worn out. It took my breath away when I saw him tumble down the hill. I got some great pic today. And thank you so much for leaving the cam on longer to watch him.
Moderator will Little Gift have any more exams or is he getting to large to handle. He is so secure with himself and I think he is going to be a climber like Yun Zi is. He was laying on his back with a piece ot bamboo and he looked like a very small Gao Gao. lol So precious.
Moderator’s note: We have another exam scheduled for him. We’ll see!
Why is the conversation between Grammie and Jusy staying at the bottom of the blog? It appears like no one else is posting.
I have been asking myself the same question, but was glad to hear that it was not just me, that extra drop of my tablet had not done it in. Perhaps somebody thinks Jusy and I are an item and want to hang together??? Just knowing it is a glitch elsewhere is good enough for me, so thanks for asking, any of you who did…..you reassured me….love grammmie
I’ve noticed that too!
How far is it from the den to the North Exhibit where Bai Yun and Xiao Liwu are? In one of the videos there seemed to be a long concrete corridor with chain link fencing that connected ??? [I am presuming the den, sunroom and garden room] to the opening to the Exhibit.
Moderator’s note: There is a connecting corridor, but it’s not too far.
Have been watching little Wu all day – from den to garden room, garden room to schoolroom, climbing, playing and regular naps in the moat – he seems such a busy, happy little bear these days…sigh…they grow up so fast….!
After a few minutes of watching a moat I finally was escorted into the garden room, and my first view today of Mr. Wu. He carefully retreated down the log from the shelf, and went to momma hoping to be fed. She was busy feeding herself, and pushed him away. As humans we tend to get upset by that action, seeing it as selfish on her part. We view our children as first, ourselves second, but Bai, in reality is doing that too. Even were she not nursing a little one, much of her energy goes into supplying herself with enough nutrition……add a baby to feed and the nutritional needs are enormous. If she does not eat enough she will have nothing for him. We need to remind ourselves that she might leave a baby in the wild for a whole day in order to get enough food, so he at least has her nearby if he needs her……and the lovely NannyKeepers too. So try to relax when she makes the decisions, she is better at it for her baby than us, just as we are better for our kids than she is…….love grammmie
Love the CAM work/worker today ! thank you !
Ok…When does Wu have the time now to er…sit still and nurse?
I don’t see Bai Yun going to Wu to nurse him since they’ve been
outside so much.
He is so smart. “tires of outsides so I go in now” lol
Love his widdle knees, widdle elbows, ears and cheeks…
Cold in Southern Calif
Hows San Diego doing for temps?
Just as cold as the Southern Californian surrounding us. Love grammmie
I was just “outside” to see Gao Gao…..after a cold night what a beautiful day at the zoo for the animals and people too. Even for the SKS NannyKeepers!!!!!
On Sat. at 4 pm I saw the back of a gray knit hat that had huge ears on it.
I could not tell if it was a Mickey Mouse hat or a panda hat.
Do they sell hats like that in the gift shop?
Moderator’s note: We do offer a variety of panda-themed hats. You can give the friendly folks in our retails shops a call and they can send you photos of items you are interested in:.
Jeslyn I must have been watching at the same moment because I wondered, too, about the color and the ears. We know this…..the person we saw yesterday did not get to meet Unka Mr. Mickey Mouse in person like Bai did. She took Mr. Wu North for a in the fur meeting with him and Mrs. Unka Mickey Mouse. Mr. Wu seems to like thrill rides I am sure that he and Yunior will be making as many trips as they can to say hello to all of the characters that they can between rides……love grammmie
What date did Goa Goa come to the zoo ?
Moderator’s note: He came to the San Diego Zoo on January 15, 2003.
Just turned on Panda Cam. Yeah it’s back in the den. It has been a joy watching
the Panda’s espically Mr Wu
I never see Bai Yun feeding Wu is she taking care of him as she did the others.
Moderator’s Note: Yes, Bai Yun is still nursing the cub and will be for a while. Milk is his primary nourishment
Kay, he can hold more at one time, he can now empty the supply quickly, so it is easy to miss seeing that action. Just before weaning he will fit a day’s nursing into a few minutes, and that will be even harder to catch…..love grammme
I’d just like to remind Master Wu’s fans who were concerned when he fell that just like the Snow Bumble in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, panda cubs BOUNCE! And just like The Energizer Bunny, they keep going and going…
Hello,
The new camera is really brilliant; I could even se the cobwebs glistening in the exhibition. It was like to look at a poem when Little Mr. Wu wandered under them in the San Diego sun (you see, it’s very dark still here in Finland).
Thanks for SDZ!
Panda sighting at the zoo already this morning. On the den cam Bai briefly, and Wu, then on to Bai out of doors while Wu stays warm in the den and off to Yunnie in the great out of doors with a box, with Bermuda hay. Once I have seen Gao Gao I’ve had a complete day, all before 8:00 a.m. That’s good. Love grammmie
Question: is there anything besides Bermuda Hay that the Pandas like to self anoint with, play with, and eat??? And all at the same time? Love grammmie
For those wishing to study some great Gao Gao photos Rita tells me you should go to http://www.flickr.com then in the search box put the name NekoMama7. Rita says that even though he poses for her, he poses even better for mama. Once on mama’s page try putting in the name Gao Gao to see if she has sets of photos for viewing. Do the same for any account you might like to graze through, you never know what you might find…….love grammmie
Sun. 8:35 AM Yun Zi DOES like his Bermuda hay. He’s been chowing down with both fists…er, paws…for quite a while. His big pink ball was in the long tub and he shoved that out in a hurry to get at the good stuff. What a good looking fellow!
Elisabeth, thank you for the lovely videos. Xiao Liwu has already become a star and I am pretty sure that he knows it! Thanks for all the hard work and all your efforts to make Wu and the panda family feel comfortable. Love, Ruth
Do you think Bai talks to Xiao Liwu?
SA….in this comment section or the last one I dropped a link for a couple of videos, one had a kindergarten class interacting, those cubbies were sure doing a lot of talking to themselves or each other. While Po in Atlanta is still with mom you might try listening to them……love grammmie
Thank you camera person! Watching Mr. Wu climb this morning and making me nervous. Boy will he need a nap!
Dear Camera Workers~~
Thanks for the GREAT job you are doing!
LOVE the close-ups of our precious baby.
My heart may explode from the cuteness! Mama is cradled in the branches and Mr. Wu is snuggled in the hay atop the mini-Keebler tree.
Has anyone seen HIH Bai make herself comfy on the mini Keebler tree? If not I am surprised…..she seems to like little hammocks, and things like that made for her babies. She looks rather funny when she does that, but I suspect she is just being cute!!!
Has the pool in the classroomeen been enlarged? I think the mini keebler is a great idea——will it take the place of the “box” that is usually used for pine shavings and such? Thank You…..love grammmie
You mean the hammock and the platform were not for moi? Quelle horror. I thought they were mine but I can share with Wu Wu. AND Grammmie, I do not try to be cute, I can’t try as I am cute….heee heee heee.
Love,
Bai
So far, So terrific~~looks like Mom is staying close by today!
Maybe if Baby needs some help getting down??!!
My heart can’t take too many bounces in one day!!!
I L.O.V.E. you, Li Wu Wuuuu ! ♥♥♥
It seems to me, in reading back through earlier blogs, that her interruptions come when Bai is restricting them, rather than just rescuing. If he were calling inl distress it might be different, but in the wild he might be too far from her food source to be heard. I guess that is why they are made to be on the fluffy side, and to bounce so well…..love grammmie
Hey Grammmie~~
Thanks, I’ve wondered about that.
Glad he’s got that fluffy side but hope he doesn’t have to bounce!
He is so precious and such a little darling
Wish I could ((((((HUG)))))) him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw Mr Wu try to go down the hill this morning. Did sort of a handstand tumble and then continued on like nothing had happened. Descending the wall is obviously still a challenge but he does not seem deterred!
Oh man baby Wu just took another tumble. He was doing so well when he went to the other side of the hill. Will Bai step in if she thinks he gets himself in trouble? Just don’t want to see him get hurt. You guys do a great job.
Can someone give us a comparison as to how Xiao Liwu is doing compared to the other Panda’s born at the SDZ. Thanks for your awesome pictures and videos.
SA, check back to the last posted exam, there should be a comparison growth chart, if not go back one more until you find the latest. Once the weekly exams stop the only regular check is their weight every day. Scales are located in many places, and the bears are trained to hop up each day for a reward. I don’t know at about what age they are expected to do this….love grammmie
Hi Moderator, staff and caretakers,
Thank you all for the wonderful care that you give to the Pandas. Whomever was & is working the videocam for Bai & baby Wu yesterday & today is doing a marvelous job. Thank you all !! I noticed that when Mr. Wu tumbled down the rocks yesterday someone was near by and stood above and looked at him. Is someone usually close by in case he falls? I noticed today that Mama Bai went up on that small ledge (in the tree) and sat with Mr. Wu, I was so afraid she was going to kick him off as he was biting her paw. Did she want to feed him? She seems to be keeping a better eye on him the last couple of days. Is Mr. Wu going to have any more exams on video? Thanks for all of your tireless work!!!
Usually weekly exams continue until the cub is too large and rambunctiousness to be handled easily. That seems to coincide with the cub being big enough, strong enough, and coordinated enough to be allowed out with mom on exhibit…..love grammmie
Dear Auntie Sophia,
Rest assured all the zoo staff; nannykeepers, vets, narrators etc help keep an eye on my family. My baby bro is well monitored and if anything were to happen, in a heart beat they would call Mama off exhibit to check on Wu Wu.
Mama is a very vigilant mama. She will listen for our vocalizations. If Wu Wu cried, she will be there faster than you can imagine.
Mama will scold and knock sense into us but she will not harm us. She has survived 6 full on cubby assaults on her ears, her posterior (ahem I am her son so I cannot use the phrase fluffy butt), her paws and her snout. Yet st 21 she is still looking beautiful and radiant (Papa paid me to say this last line but I would have anyway.)
She enjoys her food and in the wild, the panda mama will always look after her needs first cos if she does not eat she cannot nurse her cubby. Cubbies are placed high in trees to keep them safe from predators so we are somehow equipped to bounce if we fall. Ah Ping Jie Jie had a really great fall when she was a cubby and no ouchie. Some sharpies but that was to be expected.
Hope you will come and visit us. And if you have cubbies of your own, please introduce them to us.
Panda Hugs,
Yun Zi
Official Spokesbear of the Gao Gaos
Yun Zi, thank you for your prompt and informative response, It has helped me understand a bit better. You are such a handsome boy. I am glad to know that your caretakers, vets, nannykeepers, etc are close by in case of a problem with little Wu Wu. They are so very appreciated by all of us Panda lovers, not to mention the Pandas themselves. Thanks to all of them for all that they do.
Dearest spokes bear Prince Fluffy Butt…….how well you put the whole thing, Yeah Yunnie……love auntie grammmie
Dear Yun Zi~~
Thank You SO MUCH!!!!!
Love your post to Auntie Sophia.♥♥♥
You explained things so well and I learned a lot from it.
You are so handsome and I ♥ watching you play!
You made me feel SO much better knowing Li Wu Wuuu is always watched since he seems to really like to climb up high.
They take such Great care of him. He IS a cutie pie! and So are You!!
See ya later, Big Guy~~

Question for the moderator – after his 2 hours outside each day, does Mr Wu come back willingly or does he need to be persuaded back by his keepers?
Moderator’s note: He is out there much longer than the two hours the exhibit is open to Zoo guests. At this point, it is not hard to encourage him back into the bedroom area.
John, that fun comes later. It sometimes took them quite a while to get Yunior to come down from out of reach. I thought one night his NannyKeepers were going to have to grab their sleeping bags, and sleep under the “stone throne” until they were awakened when he came down. As soon as sleeping out of doors was left up to the bears Yunnie was in the hammock hanging over the “stone throne”, where Bai was sleeping.
It’s great that this blog and Panda cam is getting more and more fans, but we keep crashing the system. Hopefully it won’t be down for too long today. Hope there is someone around on a Sunday to fix it.
What is going on with this blog? No one is posting, one of my blogs is not yet read and posted by the moderator. Is it closing down? If so let us know please. All of my posts are dated later than the grammie posts, and hers is showing up at the bottom, is there a problem?
Moderator’s note: Sometimes a comment is held in the queue while an answer is obtained for it.
TANDA—-thank you for asking what has been troubling me for 4 or 5 days. That included a weekend off!
MODERATORS—-thank you for the clear conscise answer so quickly!
The cams were working well this morning, but since have been relaying blurry images. Wondering, is there a problem with the cam or is it being focused in too close to the subject. We normally have such wonderful coverage and truly miss it when it goes awry as it has this afternoon. Don’t take me wrong, we love our cam operators, but would like to know what causes the distortions we are now seeing.
Using a tablet I have seen some distortion when enlarging the screen. The first color photo I saw of Bai and Wu sticking their heads out of a door was sent to me from a tablet, so that might be a small part of the problem, but it is not blurriness, rather an awkward stretching, that after a few minutes the eyes seem to accept. I slept all day and missed the blurriness, but when I got online everything was fine……love grammmie
Hey! I found this report (with video) from China’s state-run television network CCTV about Xiao Liwu’s debut!
news (dot) cntv (dot) cn/2013/01/11/VIDE1357903984985318.shtml
That was awesome, Fay…thanks a bunch!
One of the real joys of having the snugglepuff outside for me is seeing Bai Yun in all her magnificent glory, moving round the exhibit , sleeping and resting in treesm and proudly watching her boy.
I’ve only seen this cubbie grow and didn’t know about the sdz family before wuwu’s arrival, but she really is a very, very beautiful panda. Sdz is so lucky to have such different personalities in their PB.s – the sage Gao Gao (still my favourite..), playful teenager Yunzie, the beautiful mummy Bai and that amazing, amazing little cub.
Makes me want to jump on a plane from the UK and take my place at the fence…sigh…some day, maybe…
Nicely said, Cara! They are all so lovely in their own way. So fun to watch on the cam and even more fun to see in the “fur”. So I hope you can make those plans for a trip to San Diego one of these days. I have to travel just a short 500 miles — YOUR trip will be quite an adventure!
Cara–I have been told that Bai is so incredibly beautiful that more than once even grown men have burst into tears seeing her in the fur for the first time. I have not witnessed this myself, but do trust the people who have told me. Love grammmie
okay, I get it. Looks like we have a cam problem today. What causes this cam blurriness? Is it viewer overload? Anyway, feel free to delete my previous comment about it. I feel for the cam operators, it must make them nuts to try to give a beautiful view and have it come out distorted. It seems worse on the ipad than on the pc.
3:34 It’s been a busy day for them both. Mom and her son are napping soundly on her favorite shelf/platform. So cute…Bai Yun has a paw over her eyes
I have been meaning to ask about a feature on the climbing structure in use by Bai and Wu. There is a frame of wood, that I was seeing this morning that Bai was near. I assumed it was a resting platform, but when Mr. Wu was on it the cam was higher, and looking down, I could see a woven webbing that looked like the stuff baby hammocks are made of. Is it a wood frame with a baby hammock in the center??? TY love grammmie
I was just watching the adorable Mr. Gao on the Cam and I noticed he has what looks like a square patch of fur missing on his left side low down on his tummy. Has Gao had a checkup? Is he feeling under the weather? This inquiring mind wants to know!
Gao Gao had a dental exam and had his bridge repaired. He’s now eating up a storm!
And just in time for his anniversary celebration, how nice, he can enjoy himself to the max!!!……love grammmie
I just reread the original message…….just where does he keep his teeth??? Why shave the tummy??? Thank you, love grammmie
Moderator’s note: The shaved belly is part of the anesthesia process.
Do you know why my posts are not posted?
Moderator’s note: See note above.
not to complain… but could we pan the camera down and out to see Mr. Wu? Thankyou so much!
Moderator’s note: The cams are not operated at night.
Monday, 1/14/2013, 2:30am: Play time!!! Just got on the pandacam, watched Bai and Xiao have a good old fashion wrestling match inside the den. Fun to watch these 2 having their early morning fun!

I hope the blog is fixed now, I miss all the nice peoples blogs. Thanks
moderator…my posts are still going above posts posted on January 10 instead of the 14th. I wonder if anyone else is having this problem. when I hit post it goes into moderation above Jan 10. I think you have a computer problem on your end. Thanks for checking it out.
I went to San Diego Zoo yesterday, I waited in line for three times and did not see Mr. Wu! Why he sleeps all the time? Baiyun should tell him to sleep earlier at night
Although he was sleeping and I could only see his cute butt, he was so sweet
It’s 1:44 pm est. Can someone please go and wake up little Wu? He’s been sleeping for hours and hours. Thanks.
Am I the only one having continuous heart attacks watching Mr. Wu? I see him trying to climb over to his mother and I can’t handle it so I have to click off. I can’t stand worrying about what might have happened to him so I click back over. He’s trying to shimmy down a tall tree and I have to click off. Did he make it okay? I have to click back over. I think I need to go watch the polar bears sleeping. ; p
PENNY & BARBARA TOO………It sounds like you have panda nerves, and your friends here understand. As these first days fade away there will be relief, right…..NO! The nerves continue for some time, and with those really tall trees in the next enclosure they will occupy. Try to remember this….we have never lost a p.bear, and very few Pandaholics. Go back through photos of the other cubs, they each seem to have some danger point….but except for Yun Zi and Mr. Wu they have all left in one piece to rejoin their bigger group in China to find mates and make grandparents of Shi Shi, Gao Gao, and their wife Bai Yun. If live coverage is more than you can stand watch the videos after the incident is over….you know that outcome is okay. We have all had the same feelings at some time, so if we get impatient with you just remind us of that. One little girl Panda had a keeper STOP counting once they got to 50 falls, and except for untried ZZ have lived to have cubs of their own. love grammmie
At last Mr Wu as found a way of the platform. We all clapped when he slid down the tree trunk to the ground,Where is he going now, for a tumble down the moat? Perhaps.
Penny, the long furry arm of Mama made a grab as he was trying to get down. I also have to turn away because he makes me nervous.
Barbara ~ I’m glad to hear it’s not just me!
barbara and Penny~~
You can add me to your list !!!
