It’s mine! You can’t have it!
This morning, to up the cute factor, he was given two balls, bamboo, and a limb trimmed from a tree. He’d seen the limb before, and the bamboo, but that ball…that is what kept his attention during the whole exam. He pulled it close, wrapped all his paws around it, and sat with it. It was his, and he wasn’t giving it up. Well, until he tried to climb over it or move with it, and then it would pop out of his paws and roll away. Keepers would roll it back to him and this “game” kept him engaged during almost the entire exam.
Jennifer Parsons, a nutritionist taking his measurements, had to slide her tape measure between the ball and his chin to measure his neck girth. And again, between the ball and his tummy to measure the girth of his abdomen. And while he was wrapped, content, around that ball, she was able to take measurements around his face without his usual protests. He weighed 14.5 pounds (6.6 kilograms) and is 29 inches long (74 centimeters) from nose to tail.
The exam went very quickly today because the cub was focused on his ball. Vets were able to check him over and everything looked in tip-top shape.
And because I know you’d want to know, I asked about Xiao Liwu’s public debut. And the animal care staff tell me that it boils down to this: he has to be able to climb, and he has to follow his mother consistently.
The cub has shown a slight interest in one of the small climbing structures in the sun room but hasn’t tried out any other climbing in the garden room. And right now, he’s more than content to stay in the den when Bai Yun ventures into other areas of the “panda suite” they share. This is a natural instinct in bear cubs: staying close to their mother is what keeps them safe in the wild. At the San Diego Zoo, staying close to mother is what makes it possible for keepers to get Mom and baby into and out of the exhibit.
So we wait.

I have been the same way since I witnessed Yun Zi’s birth. I had to take some time away when I was sick, but since I have my mini iPAW I can visit here without having to hold a laptop,, which is heavier. I have been neglecting my emails for a couple of weeks, but not the Pandas. And to think I have been computerized for ten years, I am a local San Diegan, so much I missed, but I am trying to make up for lost time. Love grammmie
I just watched the video of the 18th exam! OMG! I thought I was used to how cute this baby is, but NO! I missed a couple of days and seems to have changed so much. The ball was a great addition to the exam! He almost fell in love with it! Wanted to play with it, hug it and ultimately as any child, got protective and wanted everyone to know “this is mine” with those adorable eyes! Is it wrong to be in love with a baby panda? everyone asking me what I want for Christmas has gotten the response of “panda baby” or “adopt a panda” or “send me to San Diego so I can see baby panda while I can still enjoy it” Bless all of you who work so hard to make sure that this beautful breed is never in danger and can reproduce in this amazing place, while the world watches on “live panda cam”. Have a great holiday to all of you and here’s to more pandas hopefully being born in captivity for scientist to study them and find a way to increase the numbers.

It sure would be a good idea if you hung the ball around your neck, since Mr. Wuuuu has been checking the extra door in the den where the NannyKeepers pick him up for exams, trying to find his ball, he would follow you like you would follow him if he were equipped with a large package of snackies. We know you love your snackies like he appears to love that ball. About the only things I have seen Yunior so nuts about are hammocks and his surf board. Are you going to let him enter any surfing competitions this year??? Just making sure I do not miss anything coming up soon. Your boys are too wonderful to miss out seeing them participate in anything. If you get the ball up to the sleeping platform, I think Wuuuu will learn to climb that log in no time, don’t you????

Oh, that look he gave at the end of the video while he was tightly holding onto the green ball! His eyes widened when someone reached out to touch it. Don’t you dare, he seemed to say.
I am amazed and impressed how any measurements can be taken on this non-stop action cub. He is so adorable when he is moving about, and equally appealing when he is soundly asleep. We are so lucky to have him!!
I remember watching His Big Bro Yunnie a day they put a great many toys out in the yard for him to choose from. There was an oval, hard plastic, cilyndrical item that was just about his size that he kept going back to, just like WuZi took to his ball.
Well I searched for it, but could not find it right off, but I did find one of the ones that had us calling Yun Zi our “Flower Child” that is really cute too. When I run across the one I was looking for I will post it. (I have seen it recently.) This photo was in the transitional outdoor yard called “the classroom” were new cubs get a taste of fans and outdoor areas. I don’t know if this is where our Snugglepuff will be in a few weeks, since there have been a lot of changes. love grammmie

Are you kidding me… that is the cutest thing I have ever seen. OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a little — but what an adorable video. He LOVED that ball… and the keepers giving him loves and scratching his tummy… I’m so green with envy! He looks like a very happy, healthy little cubbie. So stinking cute!!

I would certainly vote yes as a local, but I only gave birth to 2 American citizens, married 3 Americans, I just had no time to BECOME an American Citizen. Now I am too busy being hooked on Chinese Pandas, living in America so there we have it. Canada need not be jealous they are well rid of me, and have their own Pandas now—-or they soon will.

thanks for the explanation about Xiao Li Wu needing to follow Bai more consistently. for some reason (XLW is my first panda cub) I thought it was natural for Xiao Li Wu to be in the den sleeping by himself a lot.

We do not yet know if Lady Pandas go through “PandaPause”, or simply if they have babies until they die. Bai Yun is at the upper age that Pandas usually can achieve in the wild, but they often live to 30 in managed care. So far we have been told that no decision has be made, and we will not know for sure until Spring 2014, since she will skip heating up in the Spring of 2013, still nursing WuZi. If she does go through normal Spring Heat in 2014 she would probably go through false pregnancy, which will still stress her hormones and body. The Panda Team will make their decisions based on what is best for the bears when the time comes. She was only two days short of being a record setting mother when she had WuZi. We cannot ask too much more from her, but maybe she and Gao will volunteer. He is also a wonder, he had bad teeth and was not feeling well when they conceived WuZi (He is much better now), so only time will tell. Love grammmie

There is only one problem with your idea….Bai does not share snackies, in time she starts checking inside cubbie’s mouth to make sure he is not hiding one there, and even knocked Yunior off the “Stone Throne” to keep him from hiding a piece of apple. Rule number one in the Panda Area….All Food is Bai’s Food. Rule number two—when in doubt refer to rule number one. If needed there is photographic evidence of the Stone Throne incident. Bai is a lovely bear, but she is the biggest bear in the area, something all off her cubbies learned just as they would have in the wild….and we still love her…love grammmie

I don’t remember Yun Zi being as social as Liwu is but there are a LOT of things I don’t remember. I do know I love Yunnie! Now how can any cub be as cute as Liwu with his new ball? At the end of the video when he laid his head on the ball and said to it “I love you” I thought I would never stop smiling. He does love his keepers and acts like he knows them, he has no fear of them. It is hard to believe that he will reach an age that he would be dangerous to be alone with doesn’t it? How old are the bears when they start to think of them as BEARS. This video was wonderful.
It is an individual thing, depending not only on age, but size and temperament too. A lot has to do with the person involved. I have no idea what is arrayed out of sight, but have seen grown men walk quietly into cages with new mothers to take a cub from her grip in China. I am not sure if it was a twin, I only know he reached out and took it. My fleeting memory makes some things I saw 2 or 3 years ago hard to pin down. You do not know to make a note of something in case you forget, until it is forgotten. Love grammmie
I think those chin scritches and tummy rubs in the den when he was just a peanut made a big difference in his social skills! Good job, panda team!
I agree, but I think Mr. Wuuuu is using it to HIS advantage, rather than to the NannyKeeper’s advantage.
Although the Chinese cubbies seem to try to play with their keepers. I’ve never seen any of our American bears so comfortable with the keepers even to the point of playing with them. Are we raising a new kind of bear? Maybe all those early soothing strokes and pats have worked some kind of magic.
Often, in China, the babies are put in Panda Kindergarten at 6 months of age, with other babies near the same age. Keepers share space with them to make sure nobody gets hurt in their play and play fights. Our bears, on the other hand are left with momma until both of them are ready for weaning, at about 18 months of age, then separation is started. The NannyKeepers try to let their relationship develop as near as possible to what it would be in the wild, and avoid too much contact between themselves and the bears, as if they are wild. That is why we don’t have a bunch of chewed up NannyKeepers. Bai’s parents were wild, Gao Gao is wild, and they have a great breeding record. Gao Gao did volunteer to be captive after a hard start in life, and look what he has. Come to think of it he should be sent out to spread the message to other wild young bears. Volunteer to be in the breeding program and the Hoomans will give you lots of food and treats, an enclosure cleaned 2 or 3 times a day, food and snackies, and food you do not have to harvest yourself. Then you get to travel, get a cute wife who is willing to raise as many cubbies as she can, what bear could ask for more? Then there are the visitors to the zoo. They only want to see you, no matter what you do. A little wave now and then, eat where they can see you, even nap on the job and Hoomans are happy. Being a silly bear is encouraged so be as silly as you can and everybody will be happy!!! Actually the SDZoo bears will be happy tonight, it is freezing about 25 miles inland from the zoo where I am. This will be a snuggle night for Gao’s wife and newest baby, and their fur coats will come in handy…..I am glad they like it cold. Love grammmie

Kathy and (by the time I got here I cannot recall the other name—(maybe Fay??)—about half way down the comment section we swapped photos showing an adult Panda allowing a young Panda to take bamboo they were chewing on, and eat it. (Bless my son, he called me in the middle to ask if I would like him to bring me a burger on his way home.) I found the photos incredulous since Bai did her things with her cubs the other way around. Perhaps somebody has a better memory and link to how Bai awaits the cubbie stripping the Boo, then she helps herself to it and eats!!!
Half way down the comment section for exam 15 is where I answered Kathy and Fay(I think). It is no fun having to deal with insecure memories—sometimes I am sure, others I am out in the weeds. During the movie there was talk off Pandas, but no showing of them and I feel a bit cheated. I was hoping that Bai and Gao were to play the Pandas. The funny thing is that 2 really good looking men were Anchor and Co-anchor at a news channel here, both wore mustaches, were fun, and usually had a twinkle in their eye. They were popular at the time this movie was set. They were good newsmen!!!

Okay, now for the really big question……did you guys have trouble getting the ball away, and did he cry??? Had you thought to let him take it back to the den, sneaking in to get it on one of his “I will follow mommy” or “I will go with mommy following me” times so he would not cry??? Sometimes you must plan ahead so we do not traumatize little Wuuuu. Do you remember how you felt when somebody took your ball away??? Just checking up on the NannyKeepers, they must stay on their toes. If you need my guidance for things like this I will find a way to get into the room for exams every week, I will not let the Nanny Keepers down. Love grammmie

So bittersweet! As the Mom of as many human cubs as Bai, he may very well be her last. They (at least my youngest) are the sweetest and most complacent ever. LOVED him holding that ball. Can not wait to see him in March and meet the other panda fanatics! And of course the love of my life, Yunior…

Well another wonderful exam video, better than many….watch out zoo, I can see a flood of those balls arriving for Mr. Wuuuu for Christmas, but not from me, it is hard for me to shop. As I remember Yunnie at this age, he was climbing on the center climbing structure in the garden room every chance he got, even napping at the top. On the other hand, while Momma slept soundly he did not stay in the bedroom, he did not disappear for half to an hour at a time. Do we have any idea where he goes and what he does while momma is sound asleep at 2 or 3 or 4 a.m.??? I will try to get some exact times for you if I am awake, and maybe get some idea of what to look for.
I am, watching th movie called Anchorman, just waiting for ther Pandas in the San Diego Zoo scene, it is ba riot!!! Perhaps those Pandas will tell us what Wuuuiu does, love grammmie

Perhaps Yun Zi will help Wuuuu tell us how he feels about his ball, his independence, and how unhappy his mommy will be if she has to stay closed in just because he is self reliant! He might demand to have his big brudder in there with them, and she may demand visits with her hubby. Now which NannyKeeper would want to try to clean up THAT mess???

Whatever you tell us to do we will do.” (staff now has all fingers crossed behind their backs).
And were they joined with the NannyKeepers too??? That is what I pictured as I read. HIH Bai Yun am sorry for laughing so loud, but the sight in my mind of a NannyKeeper sprinting across the zoo parking lot, blue bundle of your joy in her arms just killed me..from laughing!!!! Love grammmie

I ooohed and ahhhhed through this entire exam video. He is DEFINITELY (to me) the cutest thing on the planet! He has really stolen my heart and I just can’t wait to see him on exhibit even though I have to travel over 500 miles to do it! So, Xiao Liwu — listen up! You MUST start following Mama Bai outside and work on those climbing skills. Believe me — you have a lot to look forward to when you do! That has to be one of the finest video exams I have seen between him and his big brother Yunior. The cuteness meter was off the charts, and Yunnie was very cute, as Wuuuu has been so far. Am I mistaken, or did we not hear a peep out of him during this exam???

I just had a thought, which generated a question for HIH Bai Yun. We all envy anybody who is able to touch and cuddle each and every one of her babies, and wish we could do that too. When You and the baby you are currently raising are in the yard outside, and a Hooman mother comes by with a newborn cubbie of her own, do you wish you could cuddle and kiss our’s? It used to be (in my day) that we stayed pretty much to home with new babies, but now it seems that going to dinner, or shopping at the Mall, and for all I know visiting the Pandas at the zoo is much more “par for the course” so I wondered if when your babies are a few months old if you think it would be nice to cuddle one of our babies??? There is an old saying, “turn about is fair play” so I thought it might be a good idea to get the correct information from the Horse’s——-in this case, the Bear’s mouth. Thank you lovely Bai, somebody will learn something today. Please do not be afraid to be truthful, my cubbies have their own grown cubbies now, and I promise the Hoomans will not be invited to drop off their cubbies while they see the rest of the zoo, and you are the “cubby sitter”. 3 hour update…approximately. 8 to 9 p.m. Two or three times (not all eat once) Wuuuu tried to get the NannyKeeper door opened—he wanted his ball really bad!!! Went out to see Mommy for a bit, came back without her following, she came in, left, and he did not follower her also. She came back near 9 and dragged him out with her. No action for 2 to 2 1/2 hours. Then she came in and fluffed, brought in some snacking boo, then brought him back in. I must assume that she brought him near the den door, had him wait for fluffing and such, then brought him in. I hope Bai does think a bath will substitute for his ball, she will be in deep yogurt for that kind of mistake. I hope somebody told her about the BALL!!! I found I can monitor well when my stuffed Bai holds the iPAW mini just right that I can see movement while catching an occasional non Panda movie….love grammmie
Right now I see a bunch of bamboo off to the side standing upright in the den. It almost looks like Bai Yun is setting up a Xmas tree. All she needs are decorations.
Betty, I do not think that Pandas actually celebrate Christmas, except for the fun parts, they are Chinese Buddists you know. When Princess Lin ping had her actual one year Bearday celebration (she is cousin to all of the Gao/Bai babies) Buddist Monks were part of her 3 day celebration. After watching her bearday celebrated every month that first year I thought the actual Bearday would be a Tailand National Holiday. She had a great deal of close contact with her keepers, but by one year old she was as big as her momma, I bet she doesn’t get close contact now!!! She takes after daddy~one HUGE Bear!

If he had his ball in the den he might have to fight mommy to get to play with it. One day in a shared yard they put a “donut ring” baby panda size in with Yunior and Bai…….she tried to sit in it like he did and even though it was miles to small she kept it for quite some time. When, it comes to snackies she will take any Yunior had, even from his mouth. Lun Lun Da Mommy Monster was the same with her babies. So this is just how the Panda World works. Perhaps if the NannyKeepers put a donut in at the same time as the ball he might get to play with the ball….or momma may take both!!! Love grammmie

I once asked who taught the Pandas to play. The answer was that Pandas are born knowing how to play!
Any reason why he can’t have his ball in his den, it would break the monotony of sitting in his den.
I don’t think he has it monotonic in the den; he seems to have all kinds of intrsting doings, for example playing with bamboo sticks and his toes.
On the average, how much weight should the cubs gain in a week’s time, at this stage in their life? When I see “little gift” nursing, he doesn’t seem to nurse for very long. Do you all know how many times, approximately, how much the cubs nurse during a 24 hour period, at this age?

Panda Team responds: We are not watching them around the clock at this time, but it would be fair to estimate that Bai Yun is probably feeding her cub 2 to 5 times daily. By the end of their association at 18 months, this will drop to about 1 time per day.

I will address two issues tonight. First, some of you have expressed concerns with Bai being rough with M. Wuuuu. Yes she is, but with good reason. I watched them on the cam for quite some time, he trying to leave, she keeping him close, until they finally after they snuggled, she went to sleep, and he tried to make break for it. She grabbed his bottom back to her The thing she must teach him before he is independent is who the biggest bear in the enclosure is, so he will willingly follow her so they can go out to play. We’re he to run into another bear in the wild and act like this he would be knocked off, even if it were a cub just loosing his mom, to a mother wanting to replace a lost cub. I knew my kids were going to be much taller than me in their young teens, and I did not want to have to shake my finger in their faces standing on a chair, I taught them young that they needed to obey me to keep them out of trouble.
The other part is sound from the den…..I heard it tonight. Mr. Wuuuu yelled “I want my BALL Mommy, NOT BAFF, I WANT MY BALL!!!” The NannyKeepers kept it to play whiff……I WANT MY BALL NOW, not BAFF, BALL! At last sight she was consoling him, promising to talk to the worste offender, and trying to talk them into giving her the ball so that she could give it to him. So NannyKeepers during your first break in the morning be prepared for Bai to join you in the coffee room for a little chat. Be sure to dress in 3 or 4 inch long fur, and don’t forget head gear in case she wants too give YOU a BAFF!
Lets keep our den a happy part of PandaLand….they spent lots of quality time together. They were together 2 1/2 hours, just in one portion of their time. Love grammmie

‘Hey Baby Bro, you did well! High 5!’ yelled Yunior who was so proud of Wu Wu.
‘Ge Ge, you were wight! I managed to twain the nannykeepers, hee hee hee. They all scritch my head and rub my belly now. I WUW THAT SO MUCH, hee hee hee.’
‘And what did Ge Ge teach you? Lesson No 1 is…’
‘Open my eyes wide and wook at the camera!!! I aced that!’
‘And Lesson No 2?’
‘Choose a toy that make me wook super cute and hold on for dear life….the gween ball is so nice. Do you fink I can get that for Cwispmass from Panda Claws? I weally wike it. It is Wuuuu Wuuuu size.’
‘Hee Hee, we ‘ll have to tell Mama about the green ball then. She knows Panda Claws personally.’
‘Wow, Mama knows evewybody,’ says Xiao Li Wu in awe of his super mama, ‘and I wemembered Lesson No 3 Wiggle and Wiggle so you will wook cute when they twy to measure you.’
‘Hahahaha, well done. And did you try to trot?’ asked Yunior.
‘Yes but Ge Ge my back feetsies need to be stwonger. Mama gwabs me by my feetsies and I twy to fight her. It is a fun game. Mama wuvs to fight with me.’
‘Oh before I forget. One very important lesson. Never bite Mama on her ears.’

He is the epitome of cuteness!! He is so roly-poly and adorable with his ball! Such big eyes and full of wonder! I think it is so cute that he loves his den so much. Just peeked and he is all curled up, sound asleep. Last night I peeked in before bed and he was playing with his boo, rolling around, walking out of the den and back in again. He was a busy guy but he really loves his den. He is going to want a round cubby in his enclosure when he is older, I think! And yes, lots of balls!
Thanks again… for tears of joy. He is tooooo cute. I love how he clinged to the ball, and I have to say, the color went well with his cuteness. I think he is Mr. Independent. I do remember previous cubs, following Bai around, and now hearing that he is fine when she goes out without him. I totally envy all of you that got to touch him while he clinged to that ball. He has got to be the cutest panda I ever seen. And with his ball. Now you can die with his face. I love that he stays back and don’t want to explore yet cause then we wont get to see him as much. While watching over 3 or 4 hours in the middle of the night, he bites her nipples when he really wants to hurt her. There was no closeup, so I cannot be sure, but he seemed to have her jumping after she got in a few good licks on him. I don’t remember combat between Bai and Yunior 3. Years ago, but he was a different personality, she didn’t seem to need to strong arm him. Wuuuu is inspected every week, were she breaking skin or bones the NannyKeepers would know and do something about it. She may need to curtail some of his feistiness. If there is guilt they each get an equal share….love grammmie

I show them to my hubby and cubs so they can absorb it all and confirm that I am not crazy with my love of these little dudes (age range 14 to 22). As a wife and mother of four boys I can’t even tell you what their smiles mean to me when they watch what you have captured!

I think I have one thing figured out—I just looked into the den where a sleepy (or sleeping) cubbie was forming a ball of his body and rolling around……because he wants his ball desperately, and thinks the NannyKeepers will give it to him if he can just communicate with them! Love grammmie

This exam has to be the cutest ever. The ball is just his size. I can’t get over how much larger he looks when compared to the examiners and staff in the video. Part of the routine is to talk to, pet, and offer snackies to our baby. And they get paid for that part of their job. I think many of us would do that part for free, you would, wouldn’t you??? By chance, I was viewing Master Wu’s video for the 10th time while listening to the great Ella Fitzgerald sing Gershwin’s “Embraceable You” in her light, jazzy voice. The lyrics perfectly describe li’l Wu’s sweetness and charm as seen in the exam video. Embraceable Wu, I would so like to have my arms around you.

I thank the Panda God that my Wu Wu is so blessed with good nannykeepers. I want to thank you for taking such good care of him during his 18th exam. Imagine how he has grown.
I apologise as I know he is rumbunctious and a rascal. He loves his belly rubs and his scritches. He flirts outrageously. He gets that from his Gao genes. Even Yunior has them and Sheng too.
He loved that green ball and thanks to you all, he has not stopped talking about it and asking for it. Any chance that a Secret Santa can get him one? I would be ever grateful.
Right now he is sleeping. And when I see him small and vulnerable, my mama’s heart melts as I am sure many of your hearts do with all the lovely babies in SDZ. Heard there was a new baby ellie from the jungle vine. Great news and congrats to the mama. Giving birth to a 200 pound baby boggles my panda brains.

Day 12 Story 12
Bai Yun is wheling her trolley down the supermarket aisle with Li Wu seated in it. Li Wu was excited as this was his first time in the supermarket. He wanted to try everything.
‘Mama, can we have mawshmarrows? They wook really nice to eat….and then there is the chokalate mewk……oh and here is some cuppycakes….,’ asked Li Wu as he held up a family sized packet.
His mama was momentarily distracted as their neighbour Mrs Takin was sharing some news with her. She nodded absent-mindedly. Li Wu was pleased as he grabbed boxes and packages that caught his eye as his mama wheeled the trolley.
Mrs Takin left to pay her bills and Bai Yun turned to look at her trolley. Li Wu was buried under boxes of chocolate corn flakes, marshmallows, cup cakes, chips and even tins of pickled boo leaves.

His face appeared from under the pile. He was grinning. He looked longingly at the marshmallows and the cup cakes.

‘We’ll keep some of the food as I have to cook the Christmas meal and we will give some to the Animal Shelter for the animals who have no food for Christmas. Is that OK with you, Mr Wu?’

‘I am I know. And if you are good, who knows you will get a green ball for Christmas? Now Mama needs to find real food for the family.’

Of course for Bai, she had this down to an art form.

Now is a great time to check the cupboards and grocery shelves for what a less fortunate family or animal needs…..if all Pandas makes sure every Hooman hears this message there will be many souls helped. WOW!! Our little Liwu is a Celebrity! The video of his Exam Video #18 was on Greta Van Susteren’s show on Fox News tonight as her “Last Call” segment. He didn’t waste any time and went right to the top by getting on her Show! We are nothing if not stubborn, or is it just trying harder? I came across a blog about Yunior, and Mr. Wuuuu’s next two big sisters after settling in China, with some very nice photos to click on. I think the eye patches on Wuuuu match Su Lin’s eye patches. They are different than Yunior’s, and Zhen Zhen’s, but I am open to other opinions. I hope you can enjoy it..love grammmie

I just took a “Den look” and found Mr. Wuuuu curled up, and one paw from mommy (I am guessing rear since it ends in white at the Panda end), but nothing else of her inside. This was seen right before I started typing this.

It is around 11:15PM PST, Snugglepuff is sleeping near the entrance of the Den. for a while there was no sign of The Young Beautiful and Most High HIH Bai. Then, very faintly, I saw her at the entrance, a few minutes later, her hand eased in near Snugglepuff not touching him and her head was laying down, it looked like she was just looking at him without waking him. It is so tender, I think I feel her happiness with precious Snugglepuff.
I opened up another Browser to check on them… she is still watching him, it really is tender.
Of course Snugglepuff is dreaming of “his ball”!!!
Hi! I finally got on the pandacam tonite, and there was Xiao in the den and Momma Bai was practically out of the den. I only saw one paw in the den! Little furball was a little ball as he was all rolled up with practically all of his feet under him.
At NZ, Andean Bear Billie Jean is doing a great job taking care of her twin cubs. I keep checking the bearcam to see if I can get a peek at the cubs, or at least one of them anyway. They have posted picture grabs off of the cam of BJ showing the cubs when she stretches herself. But, that’s not too often yet. Those 2 cubs are very tiny! The cubs are one week old today. Still won’t know the genders of the cubs until the keepers are sure that BJ is comfy enough to leave the cubs long enough for their first vet exam. Sounds like panda keepers waiting for panda moms to leave the den so that they can take a cub to a vet exam, doesn’t it?

Just had to tell you that they are still cuddled together, when mom rolled over she clutched him to her chest to roll him over with her so he wouldn’t get cold tootsies, (or toushie for that matter!).

hi, I think you probably need to click Download next to Prints. then you can open the image using a viewer (Paint or a web browser) to print. I rarely print images and haven’t tried it from picassa.

I think Mr. Wu has always been a cuddler from the time he cuddled his little head into the palm of the keeper during the exam so long ago. What a sweet little cubbie. Can’t wait to see what toy he adopts next.

Well, just look at the video again and they have cut and spliced it pretty good. I’m almost certain they cut out the kissy kissy moments. They were certainly close enough to get a up close look at those little lips and tummy.

Just checked den cam again, both bears mostly inside. Bai has about 1/4th of her body pointed outside to catch the stray stream of sun rays on her head and arms. Our little gift is fully in the den looking very comfy in his sleep…love grammmie
I notice that Bai has angled her body across the door to the den, so Master Wu will have to climb over her if he wants to get out and explore after his nap. She’s so smart!
While catching a bit of pacing of Yunior, I realized that the way the logs slant down from the Keebler Elf Tree and over his pool we might see him take up diving for the next Pandalympics. Can you imagine how nice the pool will look on one hot day ???
Our Little Gift is such a little goofball. I just saw him entertaining himself in the den and he was squirming into the cutest positions. Are you sure he’s not part pretzle?
Momma Bai is back now. Mr. Wu climbed the mountain for a piggyback ride and ended up doing a flip right over the top of her head! I think he was a little surprised when he landed! Ooouch!

Gao Gao is being so cute in his tub of hay again. Don’t know if Doxie may have caught any footage of him before he went off to sleep. Thanks for a wonderful blog and video. The keepers aren’t the only ones who enjoy playing with Xiao Liwu ~ this is Bai Yun and her little guy’s 2nd play session today. If you don’t have time to watch the entire video (7 minutes), be sure and watch the last 1.5 minutes if you want to see Xiao Liwu climb up his mommie’s back and flip off!

very glad that was recorded. I saw that scene “live” and it was somewhat amazing. it was not clear whether Bai was sitting up but from my angle it seemed like he climbed up a steep vertical mountain and then tumbled down the front. hopefully Bai is thick-furred and thick-skinned.

Does a Panda’s tail have any use other than to cover their hiney, etc?
I think from it’s looks, and seeing how they sit, they use it almost pillow like to sit on. What other ideas are out there???.
That is funny… pandas having their own built-in cushion to sit on.
I have been noticing that panda tails modestly cover their anus completely while they are on all four paws… unlike any other mammals.
I do not know whether the panda tail has a scientific or behavioral purpose but I’ve read that pandas have the longest tails of the bears. I just find the panda’s tail very cute somehow.
When viewing photos of ZZ she used her tail to cover her lady parts, all of the time, even hanging upside down. She is the most modest lady panda I have ever seen. Love grammmie

Our tail helps cover our lady or boy parts That was why Mei Lan’s real gender wa discovered much later. He was very good at raising his tail. I love the fact that it is a nice triangle and fits so snuggly when we sit down to eat boo.

There were many good answers, but I do not know if we should go with HIH Bai Yun, or the Panda Team. The team who has studied long and hard, and team means several, and a Tail Using/Wearring Panda. I think on this one the Team Rules…….sorry Bai, perhaps we could use your answer in addition to the team. It is not your fault your best studying years were filled with babies, so you had to skip college….love grammmie
It covers their scent gland, and may thus have scent transferred to it. This might be useful when scent marking, because the tail might augment the scent gland’s application of scent due to the increased surface area.
Just a quick note——Gao Gao is enjoying some “Boo” while facing the crowed, and doing a little a little head shake now and then…1:20p.m.
Just checked the pandacam, Momma Bai was in the den all hunched over so I’m guessing little Wu was under her probably grabbing an afternoon snack! On the NZ Andean bearcam, got a quick look at Billie Jean’s twins and turned up the volume. Boy, do those cubs have a HUGE set of lungs in them! They were squealing as loud as they can, and they even started to do that trilling/chuffing sound as well and were loud doing that! I feel sorry for momma BJ after hearing all of that, but I watched her work with her babies to get them back to comfy and get them to nursing. That worked because they started to settle down after a few minutes of squealing. With my volume up a little bit high, I could hear the cubs doing that nursing sound, so they were getting their late afternoon lunch.
Gonna go back to the SDZ pandacam to check in on Bai and Xiao again. Be back later on!

Chari, I too have been watching Billie Jean and yesterday (Wednesday) finally got a really good view of those cubs when BJ went over to the side of the den for a long drink or munch. Yes, those cubs were squealing and squawking so loud and continuously the whole time they were alone – I finally had to turn the volume way down on the webcam. Don’t know how poor BJ stands it, but she is definitely a dedicated mom just like our Bai Yun.. For all those here who constantly wish for sound on SDZ pandacam – try those Andean bear cubs and then rethink your position.

Grmmie, From what i read on the NZ web site, she is the proud mother of a previous set of twins. Thats the good news. Unfortunately, the father had to be humanly euthanised last August His story is a sad/happy/sad one. But he left us two more offspring just in time for Christmas. Isn’t it wonderful the way God works in his mysterious ways.

Back to the pandacam, and it got switched to another yard. This time, there was a panda in a tree just waking up from a nap, and it was Yuni! He’s the tree climber of the family right now. I saw his foot move when I got on the cam, and that was the cutest thing he did! You all have a gorgeous day in San Diego today! Believe it or not, tomorrow is the first day of winter (Friday, December 21)! All of us here in Florida will be getting cold weather on the first day of winter for the first time in alot of years, and that will be feeling pretty good for me! Now, let’s hope that Christmas Day will stay pretty cool this year! Enjoy your nice weather! The pandas are!

I love watching the pandas enjoying the nice weather. Chicago is in the middle of a winter storm right now and the winds are howling away. I’m really enjoying watching the pandas now and wishing I was in warmer weather!
Moderators, beside the live web cam, and down a bit there is an adoption add, I have been counting my pennies to try to adopt at $100.00 level. How long will that particular package be available to us, I truly want that bag and the stuffies. I started with the bags 30+ years ago, and never regretted it. When I first started I used denim that I was able to buy as samples for 50 cents a piece, and I could get at least 2 bags from each piece. I just love getting all I can for my dollars, or I am cheap, who knows. Now when I can I add to my collection of bags, because they have other uses as well.

So if you thought you were ignored, well you were, but not because nobody wanted to say Hi, just because they ended up in the wrong place somehow. Is that me Grammie?? I know there is another Helen on list…am not sure where she is from… I am from Vermont…and have been a fan of San Diego Zoo and the pandas since Mei Sheng!! I am now madly in love with Xiao Liwu… and who isn’t in love with him? I do fall in love with each one.. somehow though, I feel he may be his beautiful Mom’s last cub, so he is my special cubbie. He is really something — and will be a little demon in a short time, I believe. We will have much fun with this guy as he grows and learns panda lessons from Bai Yun.

As I read the comment section I was amazed at the number of new names I read, never having heard them before. It seems we get lots of new viewers with each Panda cub born. There were some familiar names….P. Wong had 2 conversations, and some folks worked on a conversation about all the “it’s a boy” excitement, between ZZ and Su Lin.

At this point I had not discovered the joy of the blog, and the comment sections and still there were lots of comments and none of it was me!!! With 284 to read I did a lot of skimming, but made sure to check out parts of each one, and of course read all conversations. Well not only is the web cam working, I just saw (first time for me with Wuuuu) Mr. Wuuuu was up on Bai’s four paws getting to find out what it is like to Be The Ball. She has started with her juggling act again, I only saw Yunior get this treatment because he was my first baby to watch, and asked if the other babies were treated to Bai’s circus act, but I must have not read back to the answers at the right time. Now I know at least two of them can Be The Ball. She seems to be starting a bit later in cub time, but I will know better as I read more of the old blogs. Hi JC, the other Pandaholics love welcoming new victims…..I mean friends to help us make sure the NannyKeepers Don’t Kiss The P. Bears. If you watch both the regular video, and the You Tube of the Out Takes, including many NannyKeepers giggling you will see what we mean. Bai Yun has her Paws full as it is, and a few of us who cannot even get to touch the P. Bears decided to help her out and show her how useful we can be. Perhaps some day she will invite us to tea, and let us see Yunior and Mr. Wuuuu “in the fur”. She tries to keep up with the blog and comments, but between a baby, and almost 300 comments to read she just doesn’t have enough time to do as much reading as she would like to, so here we are. When she can she corresponds with us, something we all look forward to, right here in the comments. As you have time to do it go back and read some of the earlier writings….they are gems. If you need help navigating just holler there is sure to be one of us or a moderator handy to help. At 9:15 p.m. I looked in on Bai and Mr. Wuuuu, and I hope to be way off base, but Bai’s belly looks very bloated, like a human 3 to 6 months pregnant. I have seen photos days before delivery and there is no baby bump, but I am hoping she is just gassy tonight, I have never seen her with a big belly.
Please tell me I am nuts…..I would rather that than something be wrong with her….and you know I am not usually anxious like this.

Thank you, I had never seen her look like that and was a tad worried, but sure glad to be wrong……and I truly love being right. I am so glad, perhaps she was as tad gassy and that is why WuZi left her on her own to sleep, as later entries show. I let others cover the overnight sights while I had a good night sleeping!

Ok it was 3:30am cst: I went to check on Mr Wu. Bai was all curled up and snoozing away while Mr Wu was sitting up chewing on boo. Then he thought it was play time and climbed up on Bai and started nawing on her and then she rolled over and off he went, He is just so cute :0)

Is little Xiao Liwu on exhibit??? He is so tiny in his surroundings, but he looks like he’s managing quite well despite that little tumble off the tree log just now at 8:35 PST.

Oh my goodness….I just had an early Christmas present! Saw Wu wandering outside with his mama….absolutely adorable! Saw his brother first, and then…there was Wu’s little head, poking through the bamboo! I am totally undone.
Couple of minutes later, got a glimpse of him and Mama in their bed, and Wu, like a precocious little toddler, was climbing all over her. He got on her back, she put her head down, and he went sliding into the bed, head first, rolled over, and proceeded to climbing her all over again. Finally she loped out, and left him alone. He’s an ornery little bed hog!

What a treat, thank you SDZ!! Xiao Liwu was in the Garden Room with Bai Yun this morning at 8:30am Pacific Time. He seemed to be having a lot of fun climbing on the logs and exploring the area under the watchful eye of his Hero-Mother Bai Yun.

I was hoping you had captured that Doxie. Xiao Liwu sure had a little spring in his step and was a brave little explorer. thanks for the video. the funny thing is that Xiao Li Wu is only naughty with Bai. when he finally settles down, Bai still cradles him between her chin and foreleg (as she did when he was a little butter stick newborn). when asleep, they are both angels.

What a treat!! Mr. Wu certainly looked like he was having a good time getting dirty. Love the little smudge of dirt on the top of his head. About 4 min into the video he tumbles off of the logs — and just pops back up again — no big deal. What a cutie pie!!

In order to get Mr.Wu out of his den and spend more time taking cues from Momma, would you put his ball out of the den to interest him to go out
So fun to be able to watch Mr. Wuuuu play Mr. Cuteness…as he plays in the den all
by himself. He is real good at sitting up just like Momma does. He does taste everything he comes into contact with. I sure hope his feetsies taste good, because he taste them often, but not nearly as many as big brudder Yunnie did. Okay, so maybe I am remembering wrong….but I am trying…love grammmie

I have enjoyed watching Mr. Gao reenacting the Christmas tree scene from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” by stripping boo leaves off a multi-branched stalk of boo. He is a trip! I absolutely adore him!

No, Mufffy, no paycheck. It is my pleasure to encourage new folks to remain, and participate. We learn a great deal here in the comment section, we need a lot of participation so we have new things to learn. If 10 people are giving us information we get the best, better than if 10 newbies show up, but only one stays because others feel unwanted, or ignored. I have met folks from around the world thanks to this Panda Blog, that would not happen if we do not keep growing. Couple that with great moderators, and a Great Panda Team and we can grow right along with the little Pandas!!! Love grammmie
I think Grammmie and I discovered this blog about the same time and many ‘seniors’ on the blog helped us to learn about pandas by drawing our attention to previous blogs or patiently found links for us etc. I am so happy to have Grammmie continue the tradition and hope more will pay it forward. I also hope we continue to respect each other’s opinions and sometimes they are just that, no agendas. And sometimes there will be some who are new and may not know much about the SDZ pandas and may vocie opinions that may be lacking in information.
If we can all help each other along that would be the bestest.

First thing this morning I got a warm fuzzy feeling again when Bai tapped her right foot while Xiao Liwu was nursing. Warms me all over. She’s a really , really good Mom.
I see that female panda cub’s lip is pink, which makes cuter and sweeter; boy’s lips are dark, like what Xiao Liwu had. I found out their difference as I watch some video clips about the female pandas in Japan’s zoos. Is that true?
I really like a panda that stand it’s ground! Too many zoo pandas i have seen has been far too docile.
