Today’s panda exam found our black-and-white bundle of joy full of energy and with a new sense of confidence! His steadily increasing mobility, along with his confidence, made the cub seem more curious about all the people and cameras here for his weekly exam than in the past. There were two of us keepers sharing the amazing privilege of assisting the veterinarian and nutritionist for his exam. Liz helped with weighing the cub (4.2 kilograms or 9.2 pounds) and the veterinary portion of his exam, while I assisted the nutritionist taking his measurements.
During his exam we often observed him crawling and even taking a few steps toward someone or a camera. A couple of times he looked up at me with an alertness I hadn’t seen before and then crawled closer. Talk about a melt-your-heart moment! Of course, even with his new sense of confidence, he wasn’t afraid to make his voice heard. His wonderful mother, Bai Yun, heard it all but didn’t show any sense of concern as she ate her breakfast in her sunroom.
Once the exam was over, and I returned the cub to his den and exited the area, returning access to Bai Yun. He got up, crawled to the edge, and rolled out, perhaps not ready for his adventure to end or to look for his mom. Maybe some Panda Cam viewers were lucky enough to see what happened next: he turned around to try to get back into the den, placed his front paws on the short ledge, and tried to pull himself up, but no luck. Fortunately, Mom was right there and ever-so-gently placed her paw on his bottom for a little boost. We are all confident that he won’t need that boost from Mom much longer!
Jennifer Chapman is a keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Read her previous post, My Moment With our Black and White Celebrity.
Note: Photos from today’s exam are now posted on our Panda Photo Gallery. Enjoy!

amazing, he is growing so wide so quickly. wonder if it’s just too soon to say his bodily proportions make him look to be a child of Gao Gao.
Happy 100th Day Baby Panda!!! We can’t believe how big he is getting and that he is starting to crawl
This baby cub just melts me each time I see him! Bai Yun is such a good mom, I love to watch her tending to him. I am addicted to the panda cam and so thankful that you provide it for us to watch him grow. The updates and film clips of the exams are adorable to watch. Thank you! Those of you that are lucky to be taking care of this little cutie have the ultimate job. I am so jealous!
are his back legs to weak to walk? when will they get stronger
Moderator’s note: His back legs will continue to get stronger.
I could not have said it better Debbie. I have watched the Panda Cam for hours and hours and enjoy every second of it. I am so jealous of the staff
thank you
Cute cute cute!!!!! I think the bears know the keepers and feel safe around them…however…I don’t think I would trust any bear not to be a bear no matter how cute or sweet they look in a zoo. Little cubbie is sweet now but he will soon become large enough not to be safe with just like yunnie. I think Bai Yun trusts the keepers but I don’t think she wojuld be safe to be alone with either.
OMG what a furry big boy he is getting! I just love to hear him talk. Bai has alot of trust with you guys. I think after 6 babies she knows you just want to love on her baby boy.
Oh goodness…this is heart-stopping cute and endearing. Maybe it’s just me (but I don’t think so) the video is MUCH too short. However, I’ll take every second you give us!!
He is so big.The Mom most trust you to take her baby to get exam. And he so cute.
I am so glad to hear he is doing so well it’s so sad that I am not able to make it but for surly will be watching it online can’t wait!!!
They take my breath away, we are so blessed to be part of this. I cannot express my appreciation enough, thank you for letting us in!!!!!!
I want to know if this will be our little chubs last exam or can we expect a few more? I and many others really really really enjoy these (vids + narration) each week, and enjoy tracking his progress.
Moderator’s note: The Panda Team will continue with exams until the cub is too large/unruly to handle safely.
Moderator…Does that include making them swoon when he looks at them or tried to get into their laps????? Is that considered unsafe to handle????
Right on Grammmie.
I think a lot of Nanny Keepers will be needed… this WILL be an ISSUE and we will need to be there when they fall so baby charmer has another lap to craw in to, don’t you think?!!!
He looks huge for this exam but he still weighs less than my small dog.
Must be the camera angle but he is now filling up Bai’s arms.
My heart did melt as the precious cub looked directly at me and yelped, and then took a step closer for a hug. I had to restrain myself from reaching out to him!! The HD images are so clear that I almost believed I was in the exam room with you!!! Thanks for the great videos. My only complaint is that they should be longer!! His fans can never get enough.
Still hoping for a glimpse of the tell-tail black spot. LOL.
Keeps getting cuter by the minute! Sooooo fluffy and adorable you just want to squeeze him tight
LOL You are just like Bai Yun not letting “sausage” go off to explore. *crossing fingers* DoxieMom posts that footage you are talking about. I missed that.
I so want time to hug the little one.
More More More of the Little One! Don’t you think he was casting an imperial look around as though to say, ‘Herrow all my loyal fans and please give more head scritches and belly rubs as befits King Fluffy Butt!’ Just adorable.
How wonderful, you know him like I do. It is in his eyes, voice and movements. I think it would be a good idea if I brought him home for safe keeping overnight, I have a few friends who would help you know.
I’ll be right over, we will go get him, of course just for safe keeping, you know.
That’s Right!! Grammmie you drive and I will HOLD him (O)(O)!!!
Beverly, to keep others on the road safe I decided to give up not only my driver;s licience but also my car~you drive and we will use your car……
Yes, he needs protection from his loving nannykeepers, hee hee.
I would help too, please count me in.
Let’s have a Party!!!!!!
AC~~You are in!!! Lucilla do you have your plance ticket ready???
So adorable, but why is the video so short?
AAAHHHH!!!!! The short video~~~the trouble might be that Yunior is negotiating his contracts with all audio/video outlets~~~we hope Yunior does not price him out of OUR maqrket! Yunni is a cutie, but smart as a whip and wants his baby brudder to be able to support the family for the forseeable future. All of that fuzzy cuteness has to count for something special. Yunior himself needs support for the upcoming Pandalympics, not a cheap way to live. Pretty soon he will need a pandalympic sized pool for his practice sessions. Then there is Big sister ZZ with her “Treerobics”, lots of coaching there, and the rest of the family wants to be on hand to help and cheer. There is a big load of grandkids already, plus the brothers and sisters, the Gao family (include Hau Mei and her babies) needs a good sized compound just to house them, and then there are all of the Nanny Keepers to watch over them, make sure their favorite “Boo”is flown in each day, and all of those snackies~~poor Chubbers may have to get even cuter!! Imagine how proud we all will be the next time we go to the store for cereal, and find the “Boo” brand has OUR Pandas on them. I wonder if they will compete under the USA Flag, or the Chinese one?????
He is just too adorable and charming!!! Lucky keepers and assistants! The video is just quite short, though! ‘wish we can have it a little longer
I went looking for the more complete video usually posted shortly after the one above, but it is not up yet, so I will look forward to the one that will go up tomorrow, or just make one up in my head! I love the more complete one with more chatter from the examiner staff.
the cub is never in the den hardly. where does he go now and will the panda cam show his new place?
Moderator’s note: He is often in the bedroom or sunroom, where we do not have a Panda Cam, and is starting to venture into the garden room, where we do have a cam. Keep watching!
Oh my gosh. He is just so adorable. I envy you all for getting to enjoy this little one up close and personal. It’s so wonderful to see how well he is doing. Bai Yun is a champ mom! Can’t wait until 13Nov12 to find out the little guys name. Thanks for sharing.
Loved it…this blog was so well written and descriptive and filled with such feeling for that cubby. You guys are just great !!
He is absolutely A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E! Just love his curious face.
Is the naming ceremony open to the public? If so, when will we know the details?
Moderator’s note: Yes, it is open to the public with Zoo admission. For more info, be sure to read the post Panda Naming Ceremony.
Thanks for sharing this video. it seems that he is at his cutest, and then the next second arrives and he’s even CUTER than ever. Fun watching him become so curious when he’s with y’all!
It’s 9:45 pst pm and Bai is chowing down with chubbers asleep at her feet. night night!
How awesome is that?
How thick is this little guys fur and how much of it contributes to his overall weight?
He may be just like he’s big brother. A real mover and has to check everything out. I sure wish i would get to do what Jennifer did today. What a fun job. Just working at the zoo would be fun. Lots to see and do and all of the new kids being born.
Sure getting big. Can hardly wait to hear what his name will be.
Great job guys.
Remember his Big Bro Yunior was also a toushie shaker…..will Momma allow another one of those????
Way to go cubbie! I hope DoxieMom caught that moment and would post it.
It’s almost 11pm in San Diego, and I just saw the cub alone in the den. Does Bai Yun usually sleep with cubbie at night? I’ve seen them taking daytime nap together but have never tuned in this late at night (as I live 3 hours ahead).
Because big time difference with France, I see often Bai Yun and Chubbie living at night. It seems to me that the activities are the same that during the day: quietly sleeping together, sucking, long nursing cession, games and attempts of Chubbie to go out… or take by Mom off den… !
Never mind. Bai Yun is back in the den now. Guess she wasn’t settled in for the night before.
I am so in love with that baby panda!!!! I’d literally give my right arm just to cuddle him for a few minutes.
Sorry…you need 2 to cuddle him now. One might have done 3 or 4 weeks ago, but not now!
He’s such a doll…it’s got to be illegal to be that cute! So happy he made it to 100 days and full of fluff and health! Can’t wait to see which name was chosen.
What a wonderful antidote to the hatred and vitriol in the world today due to this election. Pandas 2016!
I am enjoying watching Bai Yun having a midnight snack in the den while precious cubbie sleeps. I absolutely love watching mama Bai Yun live her life while caring for her precious baby. By the way, his crawl during his 12th exam was awesome. I can’t wait for next week’s unveiling of his name. It doesn’t matter if my choice doesn’t win (or maybe it does win); these giant pandas will always be in my heart.
Happy 100 days birthday. Cant wait for the naming ceremony which i will be watching online from England.
Love,love,love!!!
There’s nothing cuter than this. I love his little squeals. Wish I could hold him, too!!!
Longer clips please!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing! I love the part where mom had to give the little one a gentle boost from behind
Good Morning Tidings, It’s 7:36est and Mama and cubby are not in their den. The exam video is just too darn cute. He gets more handsome with each passing day. To say that it was a melt your heart kind of moment is a huge understatement. How I envy you all. Good work Panda Team!!!
After my last post, I checked in again on the den and they were both there. Mama was give cubbie the washing and licking of his life!!! At one point, I was getting concerned because you could clearly see that cubbie was being very vocal because Mama had him upside down, sideways, every which way and she appears to be biting him. Then between doing this, she stopped and did some housekeeping, then went back into washing machine mode
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy starting my day looking in on them. They make a dreary, boring day at work so much more pleasant.
Janis, I feel the same way. Just love that Panda Cam.
I agree with you. I just love watching mom and Xuai Liwu being together. It makes me happy just watching them. Would be nice if videos would be longer PLEASE !!!!!!!!
‘GE GE! GE GE! How did I do, how did I do?’ yelled Cubby No 6.
‘My dear brudder, you nailed it. Love how you worked the room, and you turned your head ever so slowly and those eyes….you got the look nailed down. Now fess up how many tummy rubs and scrirches?’
‘HEE HEE HEE, too many to count. I wanted to play with that nice Auntie Doctor and tell her that I am OK with sharpies. But all she wanted to see was my toothfie. I got one coming out here, see?’
‘That is great. Guess what I brought you?’
‘Mewkshake?’
‘Nope, better!’
‘What’s better than mewkshake? Hee Hee I dunno…’
‘Its a cupcake with a booberry topping.’
‘WOW! I wike it. It has my face!!! HEE HEE HEE! Ge Ge, you are the best.’
‘Where’s Mama?’
‘She said something about baking a cake for my naming cewemony. She is making a dwagon cake cos I am a dwagon, grrrrrrr! Hee hee.’
‘You are a giggly dragon!’
‘I am a sweepy dwagon now. Ge Ge, can you tell me a stowy? The one about how Papa was a secret agent and then he met Mama who was weawing a red dress with feathers in her hair??? I really wike that one cos it is so funny.’
‘OK, and come sit next to me….’ calls Yunnie who pats the spot on the tree branch on which the brothers are perched.
‘Oh oh Ge Ge, what’s that?’
‘The North Star!’
‘WOW! I want to be a star when I grow up!’
‘You are one already, brudder dear.’
‘Weally?’
aww, that is sweet.
Some of us missed that story, and, like Chubbers, would like to heaqr it, can Yuni tell us again??????
Meeting this little angel is on my bucket list !!!! He does make me smile everyday…….amazing how such an innocent beautiful creature can bring such inner peace to ones life. I do wonder how much interaction the keepers actually can have with the Panda’s. Can you reach over and scratch Bai Yun behind the ear if you want, or give Gao Gao a treat by hand?
Moderator’s note: Keepers can get close to the pandas for such things, as long as there is a safety barrier between bear and human.
Jennifer… What a special time for you and oh my, your excellent report sure makes me feel like I was there, thanks for sharing this “melt your heart moment” with us. I think the fun has just begun for all of us!!! Again and again… Thank you San Diego Zoo for this opportunity, it is wonderful.
He just gets sweeter every week!!
What a great video. I’m (along with thousands of others) anxiously awaiting the naming ceremony. Can’t help but adore this charming little prince chubbers. I was a bit disappointed this morning though. After waiting all weekend to catch a video of Po’s bithday party in Atlanta, they only had a 47 second video and 2 still snaps. Does anybody know where I might be able to see more of Po’s big day?
s
I found a video on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OhCq_LZ3Y4
Thanks Maureen. I tried to find this earlier today with no luck. Po sure is getting to be a big boy. I can’t believe LunLun is still letting him nurse. Here’s to many more birthdays for both adorable cubs. From the UP of Michigan, Bonny
Thanks for posting that vid. I wonder if Po ever got that apple out of the blue/purple ball.
We watch all webcams from England. The pandas are my favourite. The baby is so sweet, can’t wait for his naming ceremony!<3
Congratulation baby panda! 100 days and soon your name!
Can’t stand all the cuteness! Thank you for the update. If you need any help with the next exam, I’m ready for a “melt your heart” moment.
Sorry, Yunior, but I think your little brother is cuter!
Just watching him is there any wonder why we LOVE pandas?!
Yunnie knows the reason his baby brudder APPEARS cuter is that he has coached him in the cam and video world so that he can send the best. Yunni”s sister was only two years old when he was learning so not much help then, but she would be a great coach now.
Darling as always. The massaging and petting the panda has made a big different in the examinations. Yes, longer videos would be welcome!
Po’s birthday video was posted by Atlanta Zoo. U Tube had a longer version.
Thank you for all the work you do to keep your panda fans in the loop.
I am so in love with this little ball of fur. He makes my day brighter everytime I look at the Panda Cam.
Can’t wait till next week so we can finally start referring to him by his name!!
Don’t really care what it is, but hoping my choice is the winning name!!
Not trying to be greedy….but, 36 seconds of cuteness is not long enough!!!
I’ve had to hit the replay button 4 times.
Is there anyway to put in a special request for at least 60 seconds of cuteness! Again, not trying to be greedy, just cant get enough of his little chubby, wide eye wonder, exploring self!
Thank you!
Oh, I forgot talkative….”his little chubby, wide eye wonder, talkative (I’m going to be a big bear, someday) exploring self”! That’s it!
No one can resist his little squeals!
Yaaaaayyyyyy! video is 7 seconds longer…….:) Woot! I’ll take it!
Actually the Moderators or Panda team might send our request for more footage to the Videographer, but I bet if we doubled her salary (under the table) a time or two she would find much more time to record….anyone ready to pitch in for that????? They do drag her off to video other zoo babies. I know none can hold a Candl to our Chubbers, but all babies are really cute.
OMG so a sweetly small guy. I am quite curious of his name. I`m sad, yesterday our panda Fu Hu had to leave Vienna, he is on the way to China.
Moderator’s note: He will make you proud, Inge!
I enjoyed watching FuHu’s videos… Such a fun little guy… Good luck to FuHu..
Inge, Fu Hu wl have many friends n cousins to play just like his brother Fu Long did. I met the handsome prince Fu Long in Oct 2011..he’s very intelligent, understands English because he gets many English-speaking visitors and loves to pose for the camera like his daddy Long Hui. I heard Fu Long enjoys his food, eats all day and likes looking at the panda girls nearby. Little Fu Hu will be well-cared for and pampered.
I read an update…He slept most of the way. His keeper was pleased
Just saw photos that show Fu Hu has safely arrived at Chengdu! I’m sure it was a hard day for everyone in Vienna.
I was so sad when Zhen Zhen and Su Lin left- I knew they were in very capable hands and had a very bright future in the breeding program (as Su Lin’s little man Yun Hui has shown so far,) but it was still hard to say goodbye.
Yun Hui??Is that the baby’s name and where did you hear that? When did they name him.??was it at New Year celebrations?? That is a wonderful name!! I feared he would end up,with a number-some do.
Su Lin loved him but it took awhile, and then she was involved. She may be an excellent mother the next time. She is wonderul. Thanks for the name.Yun Hui! Will be a star!!
virginia
Has the cub ever barked during an exam? He just seems so laid back and mellow! I remember Yunni barking when he didn’t want to be handled by the nannykeepers during one exam, but this little guy seems to like being held and petted by the SDZ staff.
Moderator’s note: He has! See post Panda Cub: Time to Vote for more info and you’ll hear him on the video posted there.
I call that more of a loud squawk than an all-out bark. When Yun Zi barked it was very loud and had a hint of a snarl in it; a bit aggressive like he was saying to the nannykeepers and vets, “BACK OFF!”
What was really cute for us who love Yunior, he sort of scared himself with the bark~he did not know he could say that…..
The videos are definitely TOO short!!!
The sweetness and cuteness of this chubby little ball of fuzzy fur is just overwhelming!! His gentle squeals are the music to my ears
His wide open curious eyes are really heart melting. His wiggly cute walking is such a treat. What a pleasure to watch the TOO SHORT (hint, hint, hint:) videos and read the excellent report. Oh, how I wish I could see that little Mommie boost!
He is so beautiful and such thick healthy fur and bright eyes! I love him so much! I hope someone taped the Mommy Boost! I too wish the video was longer. I could watch him for days!
Hi Pandafans,
Emailed invitations are going out for PANDA-MONIUM 2013! If you haven’t received one and you would like to attend the convention, please email pandaconvention@yahoo.com. If you would like more information that is the email to contact us.
The 4th Annual Convention will be March 23rd and 24th in San Diego. We are limiting this year’s attendance to the first 50 people to submit their registration forms and fees. There will be a SDZ blog post next week with more details!!
No matter what is happening in my day or the world, this little bundle of panda really warms my heart. I am so happy that he is growing and gaining weight. I call him Teddy.
Happy 100th Day he is such a cute cubbie, you just want to reach into the screen and play with him. I think we should all have a cubbie but just stay the size of cubbie now ha ha !!!
THANK YOU for the new longer video! I, too, replayed the first one several times to get my cuteness fix for the day.
He is looking so gorgeous.
I meant to ask earlier, but I always forget every time I see this little Chubbie
– who’s the cutie on the ‘panda cub ipad contest’ banner??? Could it be Yunnie?
Moderator’s note: I believe so.
agreed that it is nicer to get a longer panda video.
on the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised to see an exam video posted so early in the week. always a treat.
And, Mo, something we must remind us all of~~the video is “given” to us, it is not originated “for us”. Love Grammmie
All bright-eyed n furry tail comes the energizer cubbie…go, go, go. Precious! btw, the video of the supertot is too short.
Can anyone tell me what Yun Zi is looking for or at when he is at the fence behind his hammock?
Moderator’s note: He could be looking at a keeper working back there.
To our Pandas, Nanny Keeper equals Food, Snackies, etc. so they all get their buns in gear when they hear something in the background. The new watchers of the cams will be amazed when Chubbers and Bai are in a whole day viewing section, every time it gets to about an hour before a regularlly scheduled meal and snackie break Bai Yun will start paceing in a familiar direction around the enclosure. I figured it was a Power Walk to keep trim and lovely. It is during these times the cubs like to perch on a branch near or over the trail and try to jump onto her back for a ride. I never saw Yunior get on, but I have seen pictures of most of her other cubs on her back~but since I was not on the cam then I do not know if they were just playing or it is a Power Walk thing.
Grammmie you are wonderful, you have interesting answers to everything…
Giggle, AC, I just make them up as I go along. Actually it helps fill my very lazy days, and I count on the moderators to catch my mistakes as we go along. It makes me feel good if I can help out. I keep a small window of the web~cam in the corner of the screen so I do not miss any of the action. Love grammmie
Wow, the little one is 100 days old! How time has flown. It seems like just yesterday I was glued to the Panda Cam in the hopes of catching a brief glimpse of Bai Yun’s latest and greatest. Now he’s walking! I’m looking forward to seeing video of the darling boy’s naming ceremony. As I live in New York City, I won’t be able to be there in person.
Thanks for repositioning the Panda Cam camera so that I can see the little guy napping right outside of the den.
That was a nice surprise ~ thank you!! Around 2:25pm, the San Diego Zoo den Panda Cam zoomed in on cubbie sleeping on the bedroom floor, right outside the den and it changed from black and white to color
2012-11-07 Cubbie Cam in Color!
http://youtu.be/YR6eEkEI768
Thank you so much for the Exam 12 Blog ~ he’s such a doll. I didn’t see Bai Yun give cubbie a boost yesterday either afterward.
Well, if you didn’t see it, that must have been their personal cams as I think the cams were focused on the outside ones.
Thanks for the video in color! That was nice to see him up close snoozing.
Thanks for the video. Watching Cubbie snoozing is SO calming and soothing.
I didn’t see the change to color in real time, so I was unsure what I was viewing for a moment since I had never seen the cubbie cam in color and at that angle. But it was indeed a treat! Thanks operators for giving us viewers “enrichment” as well, lol…
How nice to see the color!! Even though the little cubbie is black and white it was lovely to see the green. Thanks DoxieMom and SD Zoo.
Ithink the reason it was in color, but using the same cam as we use for the den……..there was quite a bit more light at the den door than inside the “deep” den where black and white appars on the cam because of the darkness. I did not know the den am was capable of color, but it is with a good light!
The color footage was great… Cubbie looked So comfy and cute just outside the den. Does anyone know, is the camera on infrared at night? Or is there actually a light that shines into the den? I think infrared,so it’s more natural.
Can’t wait for Tuesday’s naming ceremony, but I don’t want him to grow up too quickly either!
Moderator’s note: Infrared.
But even in color Cubbie is still his black and white and cute self!!!
)
Kudos to you, Doxiemom, and a big and heart-felt thank you for all that you do for the pandafan community.
I was hoping you would be able to capture the boost. But lovely Cubbie Cam in Color.
Thanks to the CO who took the video of little chubbers in color and to DoxieMom for capturing. That’s the first time I can remember that we’ve had online color video from the den.
Ooooooh what a cutie he is, love his noises…do Pandas just eat the stalk of the bamboo, not the leaves? if so, is there ever just stalks around? Reason cuz when Bai Yun, brings it in the den it takes up so much room and most of the time its on the baby …Have they been sleeping in the den or bedroom at nite? At what age will they not use the den anymore?..and when will the baby go outside?..sorry for all the ??? thanks..love this lil guy
Moderator’s note: Pandas eat bamboo leaves, too. Bai Yun and cub can sleep in the den or the bedroom, wherever Bai Yun decides. They will probably continue to use the den for a few more weeks; you may enjoy reading about the end of the denning phase in a previous post about Zhen Zhen when she was small: One Step Forward
I just read the blog mentioned by the moderator…..you may want to read it too. About 2/3rds of the way through the comment secction there is a delightful addition by “panda fan” about Bai and Gao that is great….accurate but “tongue in cheek” also. Plealse treat yourselves to an older blog that will make you smile….love grammmie
The little guy does seem more confident & accepting of people than any of the previous cubs. I foresee a heartbreaker when he has to go to China.
Fantastic! Happy 100 Days wee man, from all your fans in Edinburgh.
And he sends a Plaid Panda Kiss right back at ya!!!! And letls get some Butterscotch wdith it!!!
I saw the color, too. I thought that was great.
I loved the video. I think no matter what his formal name is I will refer to him as “His Extreme Cuteness”!
Moderator ~ When will Mom and Baby move out of the Den ?
Moderator’s note: Probably in the next few weeks.
Thank you so much for sharing & taking such good care of this little sweetheart. Can I have him now????? What a gorgeous baby!!!
Lorraine, of course you can have him…..When the rest of us are through with him…we will let you know…….
Love this little guy. xxxx
Loved it ! Sweetie Chubbie clip! Dear Moderator, may we have now the chart at the bottom please?
Moderator’s note: It will be posted later today.
Aww it is 345am cst. Mom must have had the baby out all day playing. Did not get to see him at all on Wed.
Now it is Thur morn still no chubbers. They must
have slept under the stars last night. Bai please bring him in this after noon so I can get my fix!
My favorite time of day to watch is each morning when I get into work, Mom and cubbie are asleep in the den, next to each other. Every now and then you see a little movement, a stretch, a paw moves, but they stay together.
I noticed that this cub keeps to the front of the den unlike his brother Yun Zi that hugged the back area. I remember how frustrating it would be, just when you thought he was going to leave , he would move deeper into the den.
Some of us remember that when Yunior was at the entrance to the den he spent his time looking at his reflextion in the bit of shiny stuff on the walls of the entrance. He liked himself quite a bit!
Some of you may be going through cubbie withdrawal since he hasn’t been in the den much with Bai Yun during the past 24 hours. Here is some adorable footage I had from Wednesday. First, an early morning play session and adventure outside the den, and then around noon, another play session. For those wondering how cubbie got to the bedroom (for his later color close-up), the 2nd video answers that.
2012-11-07 Morning Play and a Roll out of the Den
http://youtu.be/rmyH9AA9dx4
2012-11-07 Cubbie Plays, Walks, and Leaves … With Bai Yun
http://youtu.be/1zsgMimC0II
From what I’ve seen, there is no daily or nightly routine for Bai Yun and her cub other than Bai Yun getting fed by her keepers 3 times a day.
Does the cub make any play noises when he and mom are having their play sessions? He sure looks like he’s trying to be viscous (especially with the playtime this morning – just precious), but it’s harder to tell without the sound.
Panda Team responds: When the cub plays, we really don’t hear anything unless Mom gets too rough, and when that happens we hear more of a whining sound. When he is unhappy about Mom correcting him, we hear what sounds like a bark or yelp.
Thank you soooo much that help alot. She is going to have her paws full when he can move a little faster.
Delightfully entertaining video of Bai and har adorable cub.
Good Morning! Lil’ chubby cubby is tryin’ to make a ‘quick get away’ past mama, but she’s not lettin’ him pass! Too cute! Thanks for all the great videos and updates! Cudos to all the zoo humans!!!
p.s. did Bai Yun have sonograms done? Were you able to see lil’ chubs?
Moderator’s note: Are you referring to the possible pregnancy of our polar bear, Chinook?
No, I know they did Chinook’s 2 yrs ago but they sd it wld be so small that even tho she might be pg, they couldn’t see it…I was just wondering if you did any sono’s on Bai Yun….and if you did, could you see the lil’ cubbers?
Moderator’s note: Sorry! Yes, the Panda Team did ultrasounds on Bai Yun and detected a heartbeat some months after breeding. About a week before the birth, a cub could be seen.
OMG That was the cutest play session. They are so good together. She’s a real good mom from what we can see. Loved it when he was putting his head in her mouth. WHAT A PRIVILEGE TO SEE THESE THIINGS HAPPEN FOR ALL TO SEE. Thanks Doxiemom for the videos. They calm me and help me get through the day, when cubbie isn’t in the den.
why is it when the baby is active, you take us outside to the big ones. Im not interested in anyone except the baby.
Moderator’s note: Sometimes the camera is moved from cub view to another panda when the keeper needs to clean the den, or during a touch session.
Janice ~ go catch up with Doxi Mom she has all the good stuff on the babe.
Janice some of us were around when Yunior was born, and we love him just like we love Chubbers~~so when the opportunity of using another cam for the reasons given by the moderator, we are glad to catch up with the boys. Some have been watching since before Gao Gao came to town, when Hau Mei was born. When I first watched there were 5 Pandas in residence, they included 2 older sisters of these boys. I am sure lots of folks then wanted to see what the girls and Gao were doing too…..Love Grammmie
Hi Moderator, any word on how Yun Zi’s tree is coming along? Might it be completed and installed before the Panda Convention in March?
Moderator’s note: Once Bai Yun and cub are comfortable on exhibit, the Panda Team can coordinate the installation of the tree. I cannot predict the timing of that–sorry! We have not forgotten Yun Zi’s special tree.
Special Tree??!!!?? (ö)(ö)
Moderator’s note: See a previous post, Tree for Yun Zi Update.
Thanks for the answer. I know it had to be delayed due to #6′s birth. I was just wondering
It seems he is just as good at redecorating his enclosure as Big Sisters Su Lin and ZZ are. Have they shown their artistry in China??? Has Su Lin done redecorating of “Real Trees” in her semi~wild enclossure in China??????
To the moderator:
This is in reference to your comment above regarding Bai Yun having ultrasounds during her pregnancy. That’s really interesting but I would like to know how they were able to perform the ultrasounds on her since I believe I read somewhere that the keepers never get close to the adult pandas.
Moderator’s note: We have video of an ultrasound procedure performed on Bai Yun shortly before Yun Zi was born in 2009. You can try this link to view it:
http://bcove.me/kff5in04 or go to our Videos page, select the “Pandas” tab, and scroll down until you come to “Giant Panda Ultrasound.”
An ultrasound is one of the many procedures Bai is trained to do, She will calmly lay down along side the bars with her keeper scoffing down her treats while the vet performs the ultrasound
MeiXiang (NZ) loved the jelly and would rub it all over her body
Special note about Untra Sounds….Bai Yun lays down in a “squeeze Cage” for this proceedure. She is kept calm by her favorite keeper(s) and her favorite snackies, but she was trained over a long period of time to do this so as not to endanger the cub(ette) by having to be anesthesised to be shaved and scanned. When Chubbers was really young the Den Cam made it look like a bright light was shining on her belly where the fur (hair) was missing, and it was a rectangular pattern. If you go back to see some early web cam videos (D~Moms or others) you will see the spot.
When I made my first comment and saw that it was awaiting moderation I thought what in the heck is going on. Now I see. I am amazed that you can dig back through all the blogs over the years and pick out the one that applies to a particular question. Being a new panda person I had no idea of what goes on and I just trust in those in the know to inform me. Thank you and I hope you get to hold fuzz ball.
Moderator’s note: You are very welcome, Ginny.
FYI, I believe there is also a video of them doing an ultrasound on Chinook, the polar bear. Interesting to see the difference in procedure on the 2 different types of bears.
Moderator’s note: You can try to view it using this link: http://bcove.me/7i6mnoa7 or go to our Video section, select the “ZOONOOZ” tab, and scroll down to “Polar Bear Ultrasound.”
ooOOOH! Daddy Gao is on the cam now! He has such a sweet precious face, oh my goodness!!!
What a great shot of Big Daddy
I’ve decided that if there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to come back as a Panda and live at the SDZ!!!
You have been reading my mind!!! Now that would be the life to die for, if possible! I second that thought!
Janis… We would have to put in the contract, to never leave SDZ!
Good Morning Beverly,
Oh my goodness, I hadn’t thought of that!! Of course, that has to be stipulated. What a life we could have: eat boo, play, sleep, and just be our cute, charming selves for our legions of adoring fans all over the world. It’s 7:23est and Mama and cubby are fast asleep, side by side, except cubby’s back paws are in Mama’s face. Even in sleep, they are mesmerizing, I could watch them all day long.
I apologize in advance but I have another video to share. This highlights 35 minutes of non-stop cubbie cuteness, persistence and stubbornness!
Around 8:30am PT this morning, Bai Yun came in to groom cubbie, and I suspect take a nap. But cubbie wanted no part of that, rather he was climbing all over Bai Yun and squirming in her arms. He’s a paw-ful, Bai Yun ~ let the fun begin!
2012-11-08 A Tireless Cubbie Climbs all over Bai Yun
http://youtu.be/LP1tsVfKAzs
Thank you for moving the camera more toward the entry so we could see this delightful session unfold
LOL I’m sure many parents can relate to this when trying to get their kids to take a nap.
In the end, he tired himself out
Doxie Mom, oh please, please… you never have to apologize for any of your wonderful video, even if they are the all day long!!! I love them, Thank YOU so much!!!
OMG
CUTE, CUTE, ADORABLE, CUTE
I could see Bai tell her cubbie “you are NOTt going out to play with YunZi”
Poor Bai her days of rest are over
OMG! that was the best thing to watch. Just love watching chubbers paws on Bai’s face. This one touched my heart.
DoxieMom – never apologize for posting a video. We love them and really appreciate all the time you take to put them together.
We’ve all been there: please baby, take a nap…Mama is very tired! Thank you so much!!
One of the cutest things I’ve ever seen. We human parents could take some tips from Bai on patience and consistency with our children! And in the end, when he was able to leave, he was too tired! Awwwwwwwwwww……….
I think you are officially my favorite Videographer, and I bet I am not the only one who feels that way!!!!!
I am happy that sausage is becoming a big boy and is spending less time in the den. I am sad that I cannot see the adventures he is experiencing while in the bedroom and sunroom. I am patiently waiting for when he gets more gumption to spend his time in Bai’s garden room and the classroom.
Moderators, please say there’s a public CAM in the classroom.
Can I ask why we the viewers cannot see the touch sessions? I would love to watch these!!!!
Moderator’s note: Keepers prefer to keep these sessions private. I know I wouldn’t want a camera focused on the back of my head.
We think they all are cute!!!!!!
in the morning, it looked like there was some rainfall in San Diego (Gao Gao’s area). does the rain impact the areas that cubby can access? since pandas in China live in rainy conditions, do you assume this cubby would be healthy hanging around in the rain or would you/Bai Yun try to shelter him from the rain?
Moderator’s note: Parts of the garden room could get wet from rain, but pandas don’t generally mind the wet stuff.
You can check out the photograph at this link to see how Yun Zi felt about his early rains. I went to my favorite photographer’s page, and because I knew what I was looking for I was able to get a couple of rain photos of a young Yun Zi in the rain. The captions are a scream, so be sure to read them. Also if you see some you might like to see a series of TRY going to the right side of the page where the “Thumbnail ” photos are, the big one on your page is the one in the middle of the thumbnails. Click the photos or arrows left or right to see more. I could spend lots of time there……..but I wanted to finish reading this stuff and get my emails opened.
Yes, I did get carried away with the photos again~You will see why we love Yunior too. He was Born in August 2009, the date on the photo will help you figure out what age he is. These are mostly 1 year or younger photos, what a time you are in for with Chubbers!!!! If any links do not work simply copy and paste them to the address bar and click the straight arrow.
I could spend all day (or night) going through them to pickout a few more, but I have to go to bed sometime, don’t I?????

It is not my fault I love Hammocks~~The Nanny Keepers “hooked me” when I was just a baby!
Enjoy….Love Grammmie
Thanks Grammmie, I enjoyed all the photos, Yun is a cutie too! Yes, I do believe all of us, including Bai! are in for a real fun time once those precious little legs get going. Bai needs a closet full of new sneakers… he has a lot of things to do!!!
I just love the moderators, the panda team, and the keepers, you all may be one in same but I can’t thank you enough for all the information you give us and how quickly you respond. You are all awesome, no wonder SDZ has such success. Wish I lived in San Diego, so I could come and see our adorable little cubbie, but I’m on the east coast and I will be tuned in for cubbies naming ceremony.
Debbi~~have you ever considered moving out here? I am sure there is room for just one more Panda lover out here, and for the time being we have 2 Pandas on display most of 365 days a year, and soon we will have 2 more to add in. We most enjoyed Thanksgiving and Christmas at the zoo with the kids….it was not overcrowded, and it was cool enough for most of the animals to be active. Think about it….Love Grammmie
to my observations, it seems Yun Zi takes after Bai more than Gao Gao. do you recall whether Su Lin took after Gao Gao more? in the growth chart, it appears Su Lin was a smaller cubby (whereas Yun Zi had a fast growth rate).
Little Cub Number 6 I have to tell you that the entire world loves you. And which ever nation on whichever half of the planet sees you, it is with love.
Sleep peacefully. Soon you will be running around and getting into mischief like your brothers and sisters did.
How lovely!
The baby seems to do a lot of pawing of his face. Itches???
Getting ready to eat it’s own feet???? Yun Zi did lots of feet eating.
Let’s call that video of playtime with Mom this morning PANDALICIOUS!!!!
He is becoming increasingly active, now able to climb all over Bao and bite her big, beautiful ears — so tempting to cubs.I recall with her previous cubs that she would place her paws over her ears to prevent those cubbie nibbles.
(O)(O)!!!!!!!!! Oh my Gosh!!!!! Did you see that!!! OMY!!!!!
Bai took Precious out somewhere!!! I have not seen this doorway before. They are back in the den now. I took a postcard shot of it… just too cute!! Where was this, where did they go??? Debbie… Grammmie?
I was watching the cam at 2:30 and for 30 seconds we got to see the baby and momma in the sun room in color! it was so great to see them like that. After watching in black and white for so long it seems so far away, almost not real. but seeing so crisp and clear as it was in the sun room was absolutely amazing! I hope we can get more and more shots like that on the little guy.
I am trying to plan a trip to San Diego to see the panda cub. Is there any word on when the cub will be out for the public to see? I can’t wait to see the little guy in person!
Moderator’s note: We do not yet know when his public debut will be, but we’ll be sure to let everyone know when it is determined.
Amanda~~I watched over Yun Zi from his birth, and it was I THINK January when he made his debut. I know where some photos are that I can check later, but do not let me forget to tell you. If you wait until February I bet you could be fairly sure to see them, but no guarantees~ever. Where the Zoo is guaranteed is to never have a day closed except for one storm a few years ago that made being outdoors a bit dicey~~~there are many tall trees in the zoo and even taller structures, tall structures above Bear Canyon suspend the overhead tram way, way, way, up there.
Moderator’s note: You are correct, Grammmie. Yun Zi made his public debut on January 7, 2010. You can read a blog post about it, Yun Zi Meets His Fans.
Another surprise!!! Bai Yun and Cubbie in High Definition!! Thank you, thank you so much for switching the camera to Bai and her little boy standing in the entryway to the Garden Room. So nice to see them together in color, and see those cubbie’s eyes wide open!!
2012-11-08 Bai Yun and Cubbie in HD from the Garden Room Cam
http://youtu.be/m6Ixln_j-ok
LOL, I just thought I was done making videos today
Awe, Doxiemom…that was a real treat, thank you yet again. : )
I’m happy to see that you weren’t done for the day, Doxie! You just knew we’d have to see that one. I just can’t get over how very cute he is in HD color. Can’t wait to see him in person!!!
The video is wonderful! Thanks for sharing DoxieMom.
The little guy looked really curious about the world beyond that ledge, and mom eventually decided to take him! I wonder how long since Bai Yun started taking him out in the garden room?
Thanks for catching this
Maybe the denning phase is over
Thank you so much, DozieMom, for catching this amazing video for us. It’s fabulous seeing both Bai Yun and her cubbie together in color. Baby looks so big now. I also loved the earlier video of the baby crawling all over his mom while she tried to nap. She has to be the most patient mother on earth.
Thank you again for the video. That was so cute. Just love them. Bai such a great mom!
Yes, this is what I was so excited about!!! I missed some of this as I was taking a postcard shot. The postcard shot on my twelve year old iBook is spectacular, I’m not kidding, it is like I could count every fur-hair on Bai, she is even more beautiful than I thought before. I will be checking on buying a new iPad or iMac this weekend. I will take my Bai photo with me for quality testing of course!!!
Thanks again Doxie Mom!
Glad you got this one. Thanks and thanks to SD Zoo for installing these wonderful cameras. The next few months are eagerly awaited.
Wow what a treat to see them like this. Thank you for all your work in capturing the moments that many of us miss.
Cubbie is definitely ready to get out and explore. But, Mom is saying “not yet!”
A thousand kisses, and thank yous!!!!!
It is nice to see so many readers giving the D-Mom the appreciation so richly deserved.
WOW! So cool to see them in LIVING COLOR!!!
Thanks, DoxieMom…
Just catching up on all the comments. Thank you so very much for capturing the video and sharing with us!
OMG, just saw Babycakes cubbie and Mom sitting/standing right near a doorway, together, OUTSIDE the den! It was nice and in color, LIVE, and he was the CUTEST thing!!!
Bai let him take a look around then grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and hauled him back into the den.
It was ADORABLE! Such a face!
Hope this means we’ll get to see more of them together, outside the den, now and then!
THANKS for these cams and for this site …. it’s a God-send!!
I just finished viewing the 2008 Signing Ceremony for 5 years, it was touching to me. My upbringing was… when you give a gift, you always give the best, better than what you would give to yourself. Maybe it was not known at the time Bai Yun and Gao Gao was placed in the San Diego Zoo, but I think today we can say China gave their best Pandas to San Diego Zoo. Thank You China for Bai Yun and Gao Gao, we love them and their babies. San Diego Zoo continues to give the gift of Panda watching, not to just a select few, but to the world, Thanks SDZ, such a great experience.
I agree! A real blessing all around
Very well said, Beverly.
What a cutie patootie! Love the weekly video:0 Thank you.
Here in San Diego at 5:15 pm Bai is really playing rough wtih the cub.
I guess I would not want to play with her and get all those love bites.
She plays rough!
Plus I would think she might want to rock him and put him to sleep rather than wind him up before bed time!!
Such a wonderful Panda cubby/mommy viewing day. You all have captured all of the precious moments for us to view over and over. Thanks to all of you. Bai is a great Mom and puts up with the wacks from those precious paws. He’s going to be a strong precious gift of a Panda when he gets big. In the meantime we’ll enjoy watching big brother Yun do his thing.
This chubby fuzzy cubby is as fluffy as ever! Those closeups that the video got of this little boy was just too good! TOO CUTE!! He’s at 9 pounds already? WOW!!! With all of that fuzzy hair on him, he’s got to be a little bit heavier than the last time you all held him!
Hey little cubby boy, Happy 100 Day Birthday! You’ll be getting your new name next week!
Was looking at my Pandamonium page on my Facebook, and I saw some news about Fu Hu from Austria. He has made it to China safe and sound. Fu Hu and his keepers from Vienna Zoo landed in Chengdu yesterday, then they made the trip to Bifengxia where they handed Fu Hu over to the panda keeper that will be taking care of him. He will be in 30 day quaratine, then be given his new home and yard to roam in after that.
Just took a look on the pandacam, and no one was at home–AGAIN!!
National Zoo wrote an article a few days ago about what they went thru when Superstorm Sandy roared into the Northeast, and DC did not miss out in the damage that this storm did to them. NZ staff had alot of tree damage, fence damage from fallen large trees, a lot of debris that was scattered all over the zoo. The fact that they were able to get all of that cleaned up within 2 days, along with taking care of all of the animals, just to get the zoo back open is remarkable! They even got a small dusting of snow yesterday from the 2nd noreaster storm that went thru the Northeast. I know that Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are just loving that fresh new cold weather that came into DC this week!
Well, gonna get back to pandacam to see if Bai and little man are back home!

Fri., Nov. 9, 2012, 12:15 am EST; Bai and little man are back home in the den! Bai had a bunch of big boo stalks inside the den, ate some of it, then finally found her little boy partially buried under some of that boo and plucked him out of the pile. She had him on her chest just doing her nibbling on him, and he just laid there probably enjoying some of that tickling from mom. Bonding time again!
Oh yeah, this is a little bit late by a few days, but Po at Atlanta Zoo had his 2nd birthday on Sat., Nov. 3rd, and they had a very nice bday party for him with his ice cake, bday toys, and snackies. The weather was cool, damp, and wet from some rain, but that didn’t bother Po and the other pandas at all. Happy belated birthday, Po!!
Now, it’s time for bed for me! Have had a long day as well as a long week!

It was 12am cst. I got to see Bai wanting to take a nap and chubbie was playing with her the whole time. It was so cute because she would take her paw and pull him in up close to her and he would start to nibble and paw at her face and he even climb on top of her belly.
‘Come and sit by me,’ invites Yunior as he pats the branch next to him. Chubbers curls up next to his brother. His eyes wide open taking in the goings on below them.
‘Who is that?’ asks Chubbers as he points to a nannykeeper.
‘She’s the one who gives good backrubs, hee hee,’ giggles Yunior.
‘OK, but I wike belly wubs better. Ge Ge, tell me that story again, please?’ asks Chubbers.
‘You really like that eh? OK…close your eyes and imagine a foggy day. The fog is a pea souper. Under the harsh streetlights, we see the outline of a small but well built panda. He was wearing a trench coat with a fedora pulled low. His face half hidden by its brim. He looks around. He was a panda on a mission. He took the letter out of his pocket,
Mr Gao, you are my last hope of escape. Please come and save me and I will eternally be in your debt. Please come to the Black and White Velvet Club. I will wait for you with my hand on my heart.
The letter was accompanied with a photo of a beautiful panda lady with lustrous eyes and perfect round ears. She was smiling wistfully. She was wearing a red dress with a feather boa and the card has this written on the back, ‘To my dear Gao Gao, To my hero goes my heart and my hand! Love, Bai Yun’
Gao Gao looked at the face with a slight half smile, ‘Women!’ He keeps the letter and photo carefully into his pocket and crosses the street to enter the Black and White Velvet Club. The band was playing ‘Blame it on the Bossa Nova’ and the chantereuse quickly caught Gao Gao’s attention.
She was Bai. In that red dress. With a feather boa. And she was stunning. More beautiful in the fur. She had the air of a sultry siren.
‘HEE HEE, what is a sultry siren again, Ge Ge? I wike the sound of those words. Sound like Mama, hee hee.’
‘Well, ahem, it means she is very pretty and attractive, you know. Let me finish the story.’
‘But Ge Ge, I always fall asleep and forget to ask you questions.
‘OK, shall I stop now and let you ask questions then?’ asks Yunior who loves his brudder to bits and would do anything for him.
‘Ge Ge, who is Papa playing in this story?’
‘He is a secret agent. He was sent to the Club to rescue Mama.’
‘But she was not Mama then right?’
‘No no, Mama and Papa were not married yet and this is my story of how they met and fell in love and got married.’
‘Wow, what does it feel like to fall in wuv?’
‘It is a nice fuzzy warm feeling when someone is special to you.’
‘I get that feeling about you, Mama and Papa.’
‘That is love too. But one day you will fall in love with a forever princess and marry her.’
‘Why would I want to mawwy a forewer pwincess?’
‘So that you can be together forever and have cubbies.’
‘I thot cubbies came because of Papa Stork came one day and gave me to Mama….oh, dear, I am getting confused…..I am sweepy….YAWN…..Ge Ge, tell me the west of the stowy later ok?’
‘OK, rest well, liddle one.’ Yunior pats his brudder’s head and rubs his belly.
‘Hee Hee hee he he h……zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz’ and soon Chubbers was sound asleep.
TO BE CONTINUED, I hope.
These stories are so awesome! I love how imaginative they are.
Wonder if the author could allow them to all be collected and printed for a children’s book series, to benefit the SDZ? I would definitely buy one for my new nephew who was born just a few weeks after Chubby Cubbie!
Does anyone know what whether the “chirp” the nannykeepers talk about is the sound that we hear CC making during the exams or do they consider that a “whine”? I know that my dogs have different sounding “barks” when they are playing versus when they are warning of “intruders” (the leaves blowing around, a bird flying by, the doorbell on tv, etc); I imagine it is very similar with the pandas.
Can’t wait to find out the wee ones Chinese name!
The vocalizations the cub was making during exam 12 were more like whines; at no point did he display any behavior, including vocalizations, that were considered a warning or threat.
I agree w Merri’s comment_these lovely stories of a SD panda family sb made into children’s books_light-hearted stories abt Daddy Gao, Mom Bai n each of the 6 cubs plus their many aunties, unkas, cousins nannykeepers n hoomans in blue..yes
You know Merri has something here that deserves a second look. I see it as a Win Win for all. The kids would get such a delight in hearing the darling stories and conversations, the cute thoughts of the admirers, I can hear the giggles, SDZ could earn a little extra money for the precious Pandas. Yes… take a second look at it SDZ, you just might have something here.
Oh gosh, these are always too cute for words. I have a novel going all the time, I just them… but I think these are the best… need more, more and more!!!
Friends, you are a couple of years behind me in your request to see these wonderful stories, of many descriptions, in a book….and I have been pushing for a wonderful cartoonist of pandas to mix and match with the author to get their two diciplines together and make us all very happy. It never hurts for them to hear my wishes by more people. Sometimes the person doing the creative work does not realize just how wonderful their work is. Throughh creative work the Pandas become more “our own”. Lets get going on the books folks, we all love you guys. love grammmie
With all things being equal why do you all think that the Number 6 does not have webbing as the others do-regardless of sex. Any thoughts?
And we still do not know whether Su Lin’s nameless baby has the webbing. Lots of unknowns! Any reason why the baby is still nameless? He is just adorable!! Smiles!
Moderator’s note: Su Lin’s cub has been named Yun Hui. I don’t know if he has webbing, but he has white toes on one back foot.
What does Yun Hui mean in English?
Yun Hui, 云汇, means “convergence of the clouds” or “meeting of the clouds”. Like a gathering of pretty clouds, not the convergence of ominous heavy storm clouds.
That’s interesting, Moderator. Fu Long wasn’t the sire, was he? I don’t think he is old enough yet to breed, but he has white toes on a back foot. This doesn’t happen often, does it?
Do Pandas have sleeping habits similar to humans, or do they just sleep when they can.
Moderator’s note: Pandas can sleep whenever they feel like it (lucky ducks!).
An addition to Moderator’s reply — yep! And they do a mighty fine job of it too. I am amazed how often I tune in (or when I visit the zoo) I find them napping. My impression of their behavior is this : eat, sleep, wake up, pace while waiting for more food, eat, sleep, etc… For young Mr. Yun Zi you can throw a little play time and mischief in the mix.
Just gotta love pandas!
It’s 9:30 PST. Is that Bai Yun asleep in the “back lot”? I think I remember that tree structure.
Bai is in a special Suite of rooms, not in the outdoors, except for her sun room, located (I think) between the den and the bedroom??? I saw a diagram once but cannot remember where. She has a sunroom, garden room and bedroom with den attatched. Her Sunroom is enclosed on all sides with an open air top. The Garden room has a “tree” cimbing strructure in it, but not really tall. Yun Zi made the most of his time there, and climbed quite well.
Moderator’s note: To clarify, Bai Yun’s garden room is outside but cannot be seen by Zoo guests (except by Panda Cam viewers, of course).
Perhaps somebody remembers seeing the diagram I saw (or dreamed of) and can direct us to the viewing spot. If it was a dream I am proud of how nice I made it!
For security purposes SDZ has never shown us a diagram of the panda station even though we have begged. But the NZ had a diagram when the were building their Asian Trail. Is that what you saw?
i can’t stop watching our little chubby cub, I find myself watching the video more and more. My boss just shakes his head and laughs. I came across a web site that has pictures of our cubby and other babies and all the zoos, if anyone would care to look it’s www (dot) zooborn.com
I am *so* looking forward to our dear new boy getting his photo and name on the ‘Meet The Pandas’ page. November 13th will be a great day! Yun Zi is looking good as well. You can plainly see the fine adult bear he will be one day–someone once mentioned his similarity to ‘the great Pan Pan’, his grandfather? Yun Zi also has greatness in him. To think, it was not so long ago we were watching *his* exams, and all the times he fell asleep during them. His little brother is different–to me, it looked like he was enjoying his massage at the day-spa! And it’s always nice to see how well-loved he is by everyone
Aahhh… Papa Gao’s got himself wedged between a rock and a tree — enjoying the nice Fall weather we have in SD today. He looks very comfy. It’s good to see the big daddy — such a handsome guy!
HELP! Moderators – there is a Facebook page asking everyone to click a “like” and one dollar will be donated to the zoo. They are using our baby boy’s picture. Is this correct or a scam??? Here is the link

Thank you
Moderator’s note: It’s legit! That is indeed for us, so please tell all of your friends, Vickie.
Great thumbs up! I will continue to share!
Thank you
Moderator’s note: Thank you, Vickie! We get $1 for each Facebook “like” during this promotion.
Dear Moderator….about the clicking…..some plalces only let you do one click a day, others multiple times, how many times can each of us click per day, and time a day does the date change for the site???? I am not a person who will give my friends list to anybody else, and hope others do the same for me, but I will try to get freinds and family to click if I can.
Moderator’s Note: You can only like the page once, so the more friends and family you get to like the page the better. Thanks!
Do you need to have an Facebook account, I don’t and it tried to get me to set up one, I just don’t need it. Should I mail you the $s or how do I get it to the P bears?
Moderator’s note: The best way to help is to join our Wildlife Conservancy, Beverly. That way you can help us help wildlife, including pandas!
Thank you… Done!
Currently showing on the cam is Daddy Gao!!! I dare anyone to try to convince me he is not the most handsome p bear!!!!!! Now that is a SWEET face!!!
Agreed, Gao Gao has the most distinctive and sweet face! He seems to be so pleased and happy about the decision he made to live with the humans and be taken care of by them. He wouldn’t be happier in the wild.
And he really was the one who decided to live with us after he was rescued, healed, spoiled, and released into the wild 2 or 3 times depending on the telling. And he had no idea then that we were going to invite him to come live here with the beautiful Bai Yun.
I also love the story of Gao Gao–not that he was hurt, but that he was rescued and didn’t want to leave! I even read that he was stealing food from farmhouses, anything to get attention to get back into ‘captivity’–I don’t like calling it that. Panda Lottery, that’s what! Really, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that his son Mei Sheng could find his was out of his area, when his father could work out how to get into a farmhouse. And when you think of it, life expectancy is fewer years in the wild, about 20 years. Gao Gao has had dental work done, and he is 20 years old. I would think bad teeth making it difficult to eat would contribute to that lower life expectancy. Hurray for Gao Gao, he absolutely made the right choice!
I agree with you, Beverly! Such a hunka hunka panda love!!
Yes, Gao Gao was the first panda I ever saw in person when I moved to San Diego in 2004, and I was totally overcome when I first laid eyes on him. He is such a gentle soul.
Is it amazing how the “gentle soul” of Gao Gao show up on a computer screen hundreds miles away. I am saving for a trip to the San Diego Zoo just to see Daddy Gao …and Mom Bai of course. May even forgo a new Mac computer for a while just to get there sooner!!!
is this Bai in the Garden room?
Moderator’s note: Yes.
I missed it, seems as Flash Player keeps uninstalling itself and I was trying to install it again… where is Doxie Mom? maybe she’ll have it for us… Please, pretty please.
My memory fails me…did they give out the ipads yet? Thanks
Moderator’s note: The contest runs through the end of the day on November 16.
I was wondering whether there is a picture that shows the difference between webbed paws and regular paws.
Moderator’s note: We don’t have one that I know of.
Moderator have you considered spending your next day off with Yun Zi and a camera. If you treat him really nice I bet he would hold up his paw with his toes spread for a great photo. If you have plans perhaps there could be a photo taken of Gao’s or Yun Zi’s spread paws during their yearly physical exam???? Pretty please?????
Excellent “To Do” item for the Moderator!!! We will be looking forward to seeing these great photos real soon!
Gao has the biggest right ear. I could rub that for him anytime you wanted.
I need to be there to make sure SA Wallick is holding the right ears just right and take a picture… he he he, maybe we can sneak a petting of you know who!!!! (Ö)(Ö)!! OoooH!
SA was this” toungue in cheek”??? It is not that his right ear is big, his left ear is missing about 2/3rds of itself. A good story would be that Bai found him flirting with another girl panda, but the truth is near starvation and being beaten up by larger pandas when he was less than a year old.
Moderator’s note: To clarify, we do not know how Gao Gao’s ear was injured in the wild.
Moderator THANK YOU for the clarifcation. Sometimes when you hear the same story a few times you begin to think of the possibilities as facts. It is good to know that you keep us as accurate as possible.
Speaking of facts~~we best keep the P Wong answer to ourselves….I do not know that Bai would appreciate it. We would hate to see the right ear reduced!
Message from Gao Gao:
My left ear (though partially invisible) would like some rubbing, too. And I will return you whispers of sweet nothings… (hee hee)
I am on my way… OMG… Don’t kiss the bears…. (Ö)(Ö)!!!
P WONG! Are you sure you should be aiding and abetting my husband in his attempts to gain sympathy. He is feeling a little under appreciated as Chubbers is getting all the lovely ladies oooohing and aaaahing over him. I will personally rub that ear tonight and he will not forget that rub believe you me.
Panda Love,
Missy Bai
Ooops!!! (.)(.)
Message from Gao Gao:
Dear Madame Bai. You are welcome to rub my ear, too. And I will share with you the ULTIMATE of sweet nothings… Our secret! (hee hee)
I’m watching Yun Zi chowing down on bamboo. It amazes me that he is so clever to alternate sides of his mouth in biting off pieces and chewing. Somebody taught him very well! (his dentist must be pleased)
Beverly,
You know someone? If you do arrange it and I’ll be on a plane there ASAP. I could sleep over on a bench at the zoo.
No SA, I don’t know anyone that could get us in… now!!! We have to keep working on it… In the mean time we both will be sleeping on the benches near the P bear area, waiting to get to hold Daddy Gao’s ear! I will have my little camera to take the pictures, of course just in case we get in!!!
QUESTION: Do pandas (mom and/or baby) get ‘hairballs’ like cats? I watch baby try and try and TRY to find mom’s milk, and, mom grooms and grooms and GROOMS baby; it would look like a mouthfull of fur on both sides. What do you see happening here? Thanks for your answer.
No, pandas typically do not get ‘hairballs’ like cats; their fur is rather coarse, and they do not ingest it like cats do.
Do adult Pandas make a sound, like a roar?
Moderator’s note: Pandas make a variety of sounds. You can listen to some of them on our panda fact sheet.
i just checked on the cub now 7:30am and believe it, he is up botherting Mama. I thought they are like us, as a baby gets older they sleep threw the night! Cub looks like he is ready to go! No wonder he sleeps all day but I love him anyway!
‘Ge Ge, I am awake now!’ yells Chubbers with glee as he spots his brother climbing the tree with a bottle of warmed up milk.
‘MEWK! I love Mama’s mewk, the bestest!’ and Chubbers takes the bottle and settles down next to Yunnie and has his milk break.
‘OK, Ge Ge is going to tell you the rest of the story, OK?’ asks Yunior gently.
‘YES PLEASE!’
‘Gao Gao orders a drink. He looks round the room. It was filled with never-do-wells and riff raff. Over on the stage, Lady Bai was singing ‘Making Whoopee’ sitting on top of a grand piano. She looked lovely. After her song. she glides over and sits with Gao Gao. He stands and pretends to kiss her fluffy cheek. He whispers into her ear, ‘I am here to rescue you.’
Without betraying her feelings, Lady Bai smiles and says, ‘Shall we dance?’ She leads him to the dancefloor and they dance to Copapandanaah. While he twirled her round, Bai slipped a note into Gao Gao’s paw.
Lady Bai was a top secret agent. After too many drinks and smiles from Lady Bai, many a baddy had spilt his guts to her. Every time she had intel, she wrote a letter to HQ addressed to a Gao Gao. This Gao Gao was recruited from the homeland. And he had some good moves Lady Bai noticed.
Just as Gao Gao dipped her at the end of the song, a large paw reached out to grab him. It was the Big Bad Brown Bear, owner of the club whom some say have deep and bad connections to smugglers and pirates.
Gao Gao whirled round. He landed a left hook on BBBB’s snout. BBBB growled and bites down on GG’s left ear. GG yelled in pain and knees BBBB in his belly.
BBBB pulls away and his dirty rotten critters ran forward to attack Gao Gao. Blood was flowing from GG’s torn ear and blinded him. Lady Bai jumped into the fray. Using her feather boa, she hooked them and hurled them out of the club. She is an exponent of jujitsu and 7 forms of deadly martial arts.
Gao Gao manages to clear his eyes and spies BBB about to bash him with a chair. With a mighty yell, ‘HIYAK!’ GG kicks the chair into smithereens. Then he did a flying kick and knocks out BBBB.
Lady Bai runs over to Gao Gao. ‘Follow me’ she cries as the club patrons, friends of BBBB, were running over. The pair run backstage and through the dressing room. Lady Bai throws open her wardrobe.
‘Now is not the time for picking a dress!!!’ screams Gao Gao.
‘Shut up!’ replies Bai as she pushed him into the cupboard. It had a secret sliding door and Gao Gao soon found himself in the alley in the back of the club.
‘Follow me!’ she urges and soon they were jumping into Gao Gao’s red corvette parked in the next street.
Gao Gao had a funny feeling that this could be the start of a beautiful partnership as he drove through the night with Lady Bai curled up asleep next to him.
‘Hee Hee, and they livedhapily ever after, THE END!’ giggles Chubbers.
‘You bet, they lived and are living happily ever after,’ smiles Yunior wondering if he could be so lucky as his parents.
Chubbers reaches out and pats his brother’s cheek, ‘Ge Ge, I love that story. Tell me another!’
‘About Mama and Papa?’
‘Hmmm, I want a story about Jie Jie Zhen Zhen. I want to get to know her better.’
‘A Zoommie story? Let me think…..’
‘Ge Ge, you da best. I finished my bottle. I want another. Please please please??? I am hungwy.’
‘OK OK, I am off to warm a bottle. Let me turn on the TV. You can watch Telecubbies.’
‘I wike Telecubbies! Hee Hee Hee.’
‘See you in a bit.’
WOW… that is an exciting tale, I was gasping and holding my breath all the way to the end!!! Just too cute!!!
Thursday, the day cubbie #6 tried to climb over Bai Yun, the day he made his debut on the HD Garden Cam, cubbie still had lots of energy. Around 3pm, he showed off his walking skills. Around 5:20pm, there was a battle of wills, Bai Yun versus her cubbie not wanting to take a nap (this part is in double speed).
2012-11-08 The Energizer Cubbie, He Keeps Going …
http://youtu.be/rmIqjTKUImw
It’s such a joy to see this little guy’s personality emerge
Whew! He wore me out — poor Mama Bai! What a little tiger!
Watching The Little Fella trying to bite a piece of Bamboo 15.00 hrs
I too caught him nibbling on bamboo. Good job.
Saturday, 10:00 AM…this was another of those times when Bai Yun says “I’m tired, so YOU take a nap.” Chubbers has been climbing all over Mama for the last 10 minutes, trying to make his escape. What a pawful he’s becoming.
I am loving when Mom Bai Yun is moving slowly the extremity of his right foot when she’s very attentive, looking at Cubbie trying of news acrobatics, or giving a cup of milk to him. At the moment, I did not still see moving his left foot in the same way
!
12:44 cst. Just looked in the den and saw that Chubbers is alone but the cam is in color! this is nice. Now you can get a better look at him.
The color effect is from the great sunlight at the door of the den. It is nice to be able to see the “bedding’ is green bamboo, instead of the harsher looking “straw” it looks like most of the time.
Thanks Grammie for the info. If that is just from the sunlight shinning in then I wish it could do that all the time. That was nice.
It’s fun watching Bai Yun’s play session with Sausage in color around lunch time
Bai sure knows how to protect her ear from his nibbles.
Even though it looks like Bai wants to nap and the little one doesn’t, I come to the conclusion that Bai intentionally wakes the little one up, gets him riled up, and then lays down so he can get into a pawing, biting session with Mom. She is teaching him skills he may need in the future.
did the den cam get an upgrade? the focus appears more clear. the objects look about as clear as in the exam videos.
Moderator’s note: No, but when the sun shines through the opening at a certain angle, it gives the camera more light to focus on.
yES, RAINDROP FOR A NAME PEOPLE OVER THE WORLD, THE WEE ONE LOOKS JUST LIKE gAOgaO. CHUBBY, SHORT, AND BEAUTIFUL.
Looked at the den at 1:30 pm and the angle of the door is showing something like a metal frame outside that I do not remember being there for Yun Zi.
What is it?
Cub is starting to wake up.
That metal piece is part of the den. It’s usually covered up by all bamboo that Bai Yun lays. I guess the keepers are cleaning up the den to make it easier for the little one to enter and exit the den.
Some of us remember watching Yun Zi admiring himself on the metal flashing around the den door. I posted a couple of photos I found of the unused den in one of the last two comment sections if you want a closer look at the actual makeup of the den…..love grammmie
although technically you’re not supposed to anthropomorphize animals… these are my human counterparts for the guy pandas:
Yun Zi – Johnny Carson or Jimmy Fallon
Gao Gao – George Peppard (more of his role in the “A-Team” tv show than Breakfast at Tiffany’s)
If we are not supposed to anthropomorphize Pandas why are they dressed up just to be sure we would do exactly that??? It is impossible to look at them in any way but love, unless they want to show us nothing of them but being aggressive toward each other and us. How can we present them as sweet and expect to see agression???? Love Grammmie
5:35 PM…just saw Chubbers roll out of the den, big as you please!
The video looked like a love fest between mom and cubbie. Cubbie is a bucket of worms when he wants to play, very sweet. Mommy seems to love being a mommy and baby loves being her baby. It doesn’t get better than that.
Doxiemom good job.
I love watching Momma cuddle him while they sleep. She is such a good Momma. Are all panda moms as good as she is with him? I am looking forward to his first adventure out into the wide world.
Here are two videos from yesterday. The first shows Bai Yun and her cub interacting in the den, and it’s in color. Cubbie also plays with his feet ~ you can see him sticking them in his mouth, and you can see his pink-hued fur.

The 2nd video shows our spunky cub leaving the den using the tumble method. Also included are brief highlights of a nursing session and play session.
2012-11-10 Roly-Poly Cubbie Takes Two Tumbles
http://youtu.be/Djp2eWlTw8I
Seems like we’re seeing more and more of cubbie’s confident personality on display in the den this past week.
well by golly, you did it again Doxiemom! Just to cute for words! Thanks!
I remember when a sleepy Yunnie used to nibble on his paws. Just like a human baby sucking his thumbs.
Thank you Doxie Mom! You are good, real GOOD!
Since YOU brought up the pinkest hue fur on baby ball of fur, I feel safe from getting another Nut certification with the IT department! This time I told them it was a friend that from time to time she sees a particular item that has a pinkest color to it on her screen, IT asked, “Was it a Panda my friend was seeing?” then started laughing, they were being funny!!!, so quickly I told them I would have to get back to them on that! I will have to solve this on my own.
So in the mean time, I have been working on the color on my display, even re-calibrating it, everything points to it being correct! So now that I know what I was seeing is correct, baby ball of PINK fur… what is up with that? Is THE Jennifer around, let’s see how she explains this one!!! Mmm… Lipstick?
The pink comes from Bai eatting “leaf eater biscuits” otherwise known as “snackies” then licking King Fluffy Butt to clean him. He will have some pink until she no longer washes him.
‘Ge Ge, where do Mama and Papa go on their playdates?’ asked Chubbers as he shared an ice cream sundae with Yunior at the mall.
‘Oh, they like to go to the beach to chill and there is a secret corner of SDZ where they like to have a picnic,’ grins Yunior giving his brother a wink.
‘Ooooh, I want to go to the beach. I want to play with sand and wade in the ocean. When can you take me?’ asks Chubbers, his eyes sparkling at the thought.
‘When you are older,’ replies his brother amused as he was equallye excited at the same age.
‘Oh, I am 100 days old,’ pouts the little one.
‘Yeah, wait till you are 365 days old then we’ll see if Mama is OK with that.’
‘Ge Ge, dis ice cweam is goooood. I wike the chokolat one.’
‘And what about the marshmallows?’
‘Woah, dey were extra gweat! Ge Ge, you are just awesome!’
‘He He He. And when we go home, I will tell you a bedtime story about Jie Jie Zhennie.’
‘Oh boy, oh boy! But first, can we go to Bears R Us?’
‘What do you want to see?’
‘I fink that when I grow bigger I can’t be Mama’s piwwow anymore. So I want to buy her a stuffie like me so she won’t be lonely and she has something to hug.’
‘Hey liddle one, do you have any munny to buy a stuffie?’
‘Oh, Oh, maybe I can hewp them and they will gif me one for fwee?’
‘What can you do?’
There was a silence as Chubbers thought very hard. Soon his face lit up.
‘I know I know, I will let hooman aunties and unkas rub my belly and scritch my ears for a dollar. I should have enuf munny to buy a stuffie in a few days.’
‘Hahaha, you are so sweet but I think Mama is quite happy and will sleep well cos she likes to hang over the side.’
‘She does?’
‘Mama says that keeps her cheeks fluffy.’
‘Hee Hee, Mama is beautiful isn’t she?’
‘Yup she is, inside and outside.’
‘Ge Ge, Ge Ge, wook! Mama and Papa are over dere. They are walking paw in paw. Oh Oh, MAMA…..’
Yunior clamps a paw over his brother’s mouth.
‘Sssshhhh, on their date night, we leave them alone together. OK?’
Chubbers nods. Yunior removes his paw. The 2 brothers grin and giggle.
Oh please let me be the first to pay a dollar to rub the belly!!!!
Oooh so cute, just precious! I love it.
Sunday, 6:59 AM…Goodness: Bai Yun has a veritable forest in the den
Bai was checking in with Martha Stewart Living and she said ( more green ) I do think it is time to exit the Den thing now. Baby King Fluffy Butt was sneezing and wiping away the dust it seemed. We all want to cuddle with that doll. He is so cute.
Keep a close eye on Martha, She may want a black and white pet for her home……
10:45am Sunday, Yun Zi woke up from a nap and was back on his beloved swing! He tried to do a handstand on the swing, LOL
He was an early started with the handstands….he started in the den before he even thought about going out on his own. He even practiced on his Mamma~~a pal got photos of him doing just that in their shared yeard. Perhaps Yunior will be the superior breeder of the males in the family, just like Sweeet Daddy Gao Gao
This little fellow is all guy isn’t he? He is a leader in his own right and certainly has a mind of his own. I think we are in for a treat when he gets command of his hind legs. I don’t think any bear will outdo Yun Zi but this one is going to be fun to watch just like Yunnie is. We are so lucky to have these bears at our own SDZ and it has very interesting to watch and learn each of them has their own personality.
But remember he has Yunior at just the right age to help him, not only with how to handle his nanykeepers and mamma, but also the press and his own body.
This may seem like a ridiculous question but do the Pandas know their names? Can you call Bai Yun by her name and have her react? I guess I’m thinking they are pets……..lol. But I am still curious.
No-it is a good question, and I am interested in the answer too. And I bet we are not the only two who wonder.
I have seen them react to their names being called by their keepers via various YouTube clips. Yun Zi was being given honey water & his keeper called to him and he reacted. They are clever bears.
Yes they do. And they Know many commands in English. When they go to China they cannot understand at first. PAndas are very very smart and communicate well. wATCH A TRAINING SESSION IF YOU CAN.U WILL BE AMAZED!
wanda ,shortly after Mei Sheng went to China, keeper Angie was in China and went to see him when she called him by name he looked alittle confused and then realized who it was and he went to her for HIS back and belly rub he would bleat to her in the morning just like he did when he was here. See her post from Dec 2007 for the story
Moderator’s note: Here’s the link: A Happy Reunion and New Friends.
They do respond to their names when their trusted keepers call them.
I’m humbled and thankful for the opportunity to see what most people in the world aren’t even aware of, thanks to the SDZ. Such a good job by all.
Do Panda’s have eye lids?
Yes, they have. Look at the second to the last photo on this site:
blog.sina.(dot).cn/s/blog_5314571e0102e21y.html
Yes. Otherwise, we’d never know when they are sleeping.
I have not been able to watch this baby like I did with Yun Zi. I was just watching Bai and her baby and Bai seems so rough with him … more so than I remember from last time. Am I just imagining this or have I forgotton what she was like with Yun Zi?? This little guy sure is cute!!
i literally just saw the cub walk into the den all by himself and turn around and walk back out. He is really venturing in his own now. What a big boy he is!!
I just watched Gao Junior playing with a piece of bamboo for a few moments, toddle around the den very cutely then fold himself into a little soccer ball for a nice nap. He is so adorable!
At 5:45 pm tonight I finally saw the cub walk into the den all by himself!
This is the first time I have seen him walk all alone!
6 pm Sunday: What? What? Did I just see Chubbies get back into the den all by himself? Then he went back out and came in again????? Uh-oh. He didn’t say ‘Aha!’ but watch out world. Trouble can use all 4 feet now.
I am very happy you got to see that live, and hope that it happens to come up on what the D-Mom recorded, but if not congrats to anyone who got to see it.
Q1:
What have the panda lovers here seen that made them come to the conclusion that Gao Gao is gentle?
Each time I see him on the panda cam, he is happily munching away. Granted we can tell that Bai Yun is gentle by the way she handles her cub (altho sometimes she seems to be washing her cub in the *violent* cycle as opposed to the gentle cycle).
Q2:
Gao Gao’s left ear, did the injury affect his hearing in any way?
Thank goodness he was found soon after his injury, because there was no mention of his ear being infected at the time he was found.
I read somewhere that he was under the age of one when he was found. I wonder if he told Bai Yun and his cubs his adventure of being abandoned by his mother (perhaps she rejected him due to the webbed paws?), of his life of survival, of his encounter with a big bad animal (maybe not even another panda) or more, of how his left ear was injured.
Perhaps somebody can come up with a bedtime story he would tell his cubs as Bai Yun looks at him adoringly.
His left ear and his webbed paws… he is truly one of a kind and we are lucky to have him here.
I check for new questions and such from the bottom up once I have read the comment section once or more, so I found your request almost immediatly when I logged on, and copied and pasted it to an email to one of our creative writers in case she might miss it. `
You asked some good questions. When he was young Gao Gao had a video or booklet made by the Chinese and was a particular favorite of the keepers at WoLong. We sometimes have a bit of trouble getting more information as it gets older, but there was information of him beig beloved of the Chinese children.
Sometimes we see the same information enough times we begin to think it is fact, when, in fact, we cannot be sure. What we need is a Chinese Panda Lover willing and able to garner as many facts as possible. In the meantime we will just have to do with our stories, and love of Gao Gao to get us through. If anybody knows a source, or possible source of good information it would be appreciated by all of us if they would ask for their help….love grammmie
p.s. I especially like the line about Bai looking on adodringly……….It is how most of us picture her in our minds. We know it is our own humanising of the Pandas, but we continue to look on that way.
Dear Grammmie,
He is mine and I do adore him and his cute lovely ways. Sometimes when he forgets to clean up his enclosure or if he leaves his boo everywhere, I do look at him differently. He will always be my honey bunny, cuddle wuddle, sweetheart, darling husband.
Love,
BY
I just reread question two about affect of hearring~~I believe the Panda Team has had him in the hearing study they have been frustrated only by the fact that he has a short attention span making it difficult to gauge things. Or perhaps he is thinking adoringly of his upcomeing dates with Bai Yun in the coming years, not thinking about their ages.
A story? I will ask Auntie Lucilla to interview Sir Gao Gao and find out what happened during his childhood. Auntie Lucilla is good at writing stories and she helps me with mine. Hee Hee.
YZ
Yunior you are on….Love Grammmie
gAO gAO WAS IN TWO FIGHTS AT DIFFERENT TIMES. hE WAS SENT BACKTO THE WILD THE FIRST TIME HE WAS REPAIRED. aND THE SECOND TIME HE SHOWED UP FOR HELP, THEY KEPT HIM AND SENT HIM TO sdz. sEE THE BLOGS.aND THE iNFO ON HIM. hE IS A REAL STUD!!
Big Brother Yunnie was quite active this morning while playing with his swing. Does anyone know why he kept “throwing” himself onto the ground just behind the swing? was he just being goofy and a little boy, or was there some significance to this repeated behavior? He’s so fun!
got to watch yun zi romping and rolling this afternoon, he was so funny running an jumping on his swing trying to do handstands on it while it was swinging. also trying to hang from the branch above it. he was so adorable can’t wait to see the new cubbie doing the same thing his siblings have done and are still doing. love them all thanks for sharing them with us all.
during the last evenings when I’ve caught Bai and Sir Sausage together, he looks like he starts out as a wet noodle (fast asleep). then by the time bathing is over, Bai wants to nap and he wants to play. Bai sometimes alternates between setting him down and picking him up until he settles down and they both go to sleep. seems like after he’s gone to sleep, Bai will leave the den or take him outside.
‘Now how is the hot milk?’ asks Yunior as his brother settles down for his bedtime story.
‘I’m good! Ge Ge, story story!!!’ yells Chubbers gleefully, ‘I can’t wait till tomorrow when I get my name!’
‘Yes, and you will also get your family name too. Its a lovely one!’ grins Yun Zi the Conqueror.
‘Oh Ge Ge, tell me tell me!’ pleads Chubbers who looks appealingly at his brother.
‘Nope, tomorrow. It is our custom from ancient days. Mama and Papa have decided and it is their duty to name you. OK, let me see what my story books have for you tonight.’
‘The Story of Zhennie the Brave!’ giggles Chubbers.
‘And so it shall be. Once Upon a Time there was a Princess named Zhen Zhen who was truly beautiful. AND she was brave and clever. From young she learnt the ways of the forest people and loved all the animals of the land.
One day she spotted a young deer. He was crying. Princess Zhennie went up to him to comfort him. SHe placed her paw round his shoulders.
‘My mama and papa have died. They were killed by hooman hunters. They tried to kill me too.’ Zhennie looked closely and saw that the fawn had been hurt by an arrow.
‘Come home with me and my Mama will look after you. Mama Bai is kind and loving. You will be fine,’ and soon Zhennie carried the fawn home. Of course Queen Bai immediately bandaged the wound and made some healthy tonics for Xiao Ru.
‘You can stay with us as long as you wish. Now I have prepared a bed for you in the room next to Zhennie’s. She will now be your big sister,’ said Queen Bai who was quietly reassuring but who was angry at what the hunters have done.
When the fawn had fallen asleep from tiredness, Princess Zhennie ran to update her Papa. He was King of the Emeald Bamboo Forest. His gentle brows creased in anger at what he heard.
‘Nonsense! These hoomans have to be stopped! Hunting is a dangerous past time. We are made to share the earth not fight to live on earlth,’ roared the King.
Princess Zhennie raised her paw and asked, ‘Papa, can you let me, Su Lin and Sheng handle this? We the next generation love the forest and we want to keep it peaceful and joyful.’
‘Hmmmm, young one, are you sure you can fight the hunters? They have powerful weapons….I worry for you.’
‘Papa, we can do it,’ interjected Sheng who was the quiet steady one.
Queen Bai looked at her children and then spoke her mind, ‘Gao, let them prove themselves. Children, let us know what you are planning and let Mama and Papa advise you.’
‘Yes, Mama and we will not disappoint you!’ replied Princess ZZ and with that the 4 cubbies off to discuss their war on hooman hunters.
King Gao looked at his wife with respect and love, ‘Honey, you always are the wise one.’
She smiled and led him by the paw into their inner chambers as the moon shone brightly over the lake in the middle of the palace.
TO BE CONTINUED, maybe
Hi! Hope everyone is enjoying this Veteran’s Day weekend on both Sunday (regular holiday) and Monday (Monday holiday), November 11 & 12, and please remember our veterans and current military personnel this weekend and everyday.
MSNBC website had a great article dated Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 about the bamboo plants that are growing in the Chinese mountains being affected by the warming climate, and the danger of that bamboo not being as plentiful as it should be for the wild pandas. It’s a very interesting read, and says alot about what our warming world can do to wild animals’ food supplies in alot of areas of the world, especially in China’s mountains. Hope you all will take some time to read about this because this is a very important part of the wild pandas’ lives in China.
Just checked out the pandacam, and as usual, no one is home!
Back to the pandacam tomorrow!

uploaded a couple videos:
1 Gao Gao tongue flicking (very short but I felt significant b/c this is a behavior I only see Gao doing)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/51947371@N07/8177985461/in/photostream
2 Yun Zi picking up a scent
http://www.flickr.com/photos/51947371@N07/8178051114/in/photostream
these videos were created by putting together stills taken from web cam in quick succession
Early the next morning Princess Zhen Zhen had breakfast with her parents. She told them what she and her siblings had planned. Her father was delighted and her mother was amused and mortified that her daughter could think of such a plan.
The siblings rode out into the forest with an entourage of soldiers sent by King Gao Gao to help them. Xiao ru rode with the Princess. They tied their horsies in the glade. They melted silently into the forest.
Soon the forest resounded with the noisy footsteps of hooman hunters. No matter much they tried, their presence was signalled by their clumsy attempts to be hidden. One of the humters spotted a panda cubby and Xiao ru seated under a tree eating shoots and fruits. He waved to the others.
They moved in a circular manner so as to trap the two young ones. Just as they were about to pounce, Princesses Hua Mei and su Lin swung down using vines and plucked the two youngsters to safety.
From the top of the trees where the panda warriors were hiding, Princess Zhen Zhen watched their every move. And she yelled and at that moment panda poop and bamboo shards rained down on the 4 hooman hunters. They were quickly hurting from the hardened poop and sharp bamboo bits. They ran screaming out of the forest. Prince Mei Sheng and Princess Zhen Zhen swung through the forest canopy throwing poop bombs at them. The hunters were never seen of again.
When the panda warriors led by Princess Zhen Zhen returned to the palace, Queen Bai Yun had prepared a feast for them. Zhennie changed into an elegant silk dress with lovely water sleeves. She looked demure as she entered the dining hall.
King Gao Gao embraced his youngest daughter and laughed heartily at the stories. He called for silence.
‘Today I am so proud of my four cubbies. They have proven themselves to be brave and honourable. my daughter has shown me she has brains and beauty by leading the rout of the hooman hunters. I am conferring on her the title The Order of the Golden Pheasant. It is the highest order in the land for a civilian. I do hope and pray for peace in the land that we can live with hoomans and enjoy this earth.’
There were shouts of approval and all present gave Princess Zhen Zhen a standing ovation. She grinned and together with her sisters, the Panda Grrrls, she entertained the guests with songs they had written.
KIng Gao looked at his wife, ‘We have not done too badly eh?’ Queen Bai grinned, ‘ No, we have not done too badly indeed.’
‘So this is the story of Princess Zhennie. The end,’ exclaimed Yunior.
‘But Ge Ge, does she live happily ever after?’ asked Chubbers, ‘She must!!’
‘Jie Jie Zhennie is living happily in Ermei Shan. Maybe next year she will find a forever prince of her own!’ suggests Yun Zi.
‘Ge Ge, I wike this stowy, hee hee. Am I a panda prince?’
‘You are a priceless pinceling!’ declared Yunior as he lifted his brother high above his head and twirled him around.
‘Ge Ge, more more more!’ Wheee Wheee! Hee Hee Hee!’
Special message for Mast Gao Yun Zi~~~More, More, More…Just like little

Cubbie #6 took a gigantic step last night by showing us repeatedly that he can crawl into the den without any assistance from Bai Yun! Great way to celebrate your 15 week birthday
2012-11-11 Cubbie Milestone: Climbing into the Den by Himself

Now the little guy needs to work on his exit strategy ~ the rolling, tumbling and slipping out will be a thing of the past rather quickly!
Hi, Doxie! Watched the vid of little fluffy butt coming in and out of the den by himself. CUTE!! thanks for getting this up for us to watch!
Chari
Thank you Doxie Mom, I sure enjoyed it. Everything he does is so cute, but this is an important event… to crawl up the step into the den without help from Mom Bai. Oh yes, that exit strategy is something else!… Do you or anyone else know if the other Bai babies did so much rolling out of the den like this precious one does?
It is so nice to know we can rely on the D~Mom, she helped us once again.
Can’t wait till tomorrow to find out our Chubbie’s permanent name!!!!
It’s 9:37 est, and Super Storm Bai just blew threw the den. What a mess!!
Now he’s contemplating making a run for it out the door!!
Poor cubbie at one point got tossed to one side too, then Mama gave him a little love tap
Well, he made it!!!! I thought Bai was going to go after him, but she pulled in another branch of bamboo. Cubbie must be so proud of himself, until Mama catches up to him
Wow, Bai and baby are sleeping now in the den, but just a couple of minutes ago, she rolled him out the door. She was doing some house keeping, if that’s what it is, and just reached down there and rolled him out the door with her paw. I was looking at the comments and when I came back they were together again. Did anyone else see that? Still would like to know if Panda’s have eye lids?
Moderator’s Note: I have sent the “eye lid” question to the Panda Team.
Pandas do have eyelids… If you search the National Zoo’s archives, they mentioned it back in late 2007, when their male panda (Tian Tian, Bai Yun’s half brother) had an inflamed third eyelid and had surgery to have it removed.
Thanks Lil. Third eyelid????? I guess I just don’t see then blink, but they must. I was just curious because the cubby comes so near Bai’s eyes when he’s batting around. Also, they are what looks like careless with the bamboo sometimes and it gets very near their eyes.
OMG again. Everyday is another miracle witnessed. What a privilege to be able to see something new again. My wish is that the whole world could see this to relieve some of the stress of everyday life. I know for sure it calms me and lifts my heart to be able to witness these magnificent creatures in action.
They are so much like us, but so different.
Thanks again SDZ people.
