As you may know, polar bears Kalluk and Chinook bred late this spring. It is assumed but not confirmed that polar bear gestation is 195 to 265 days. If we count from the first day of breeding to the last, we would expect Chinook to give birth between November 2 and January 29! Most of you may be thinking it’s holiday season, autumn, winter, snow season, etc.. For us, it’s quiet season.
In early October we began preparations. First we set up all the charts to record Chinook’s behavior, weight, and den temperatures. We aim to have Chinook’s weight around 660 pounds (300 kilograms) at the time she would enter her den, and we look to have her den temperature right around 56 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius). Her behavior is completely up to her! We also began working with our veterinarians for ultrasound exams and our reproductive physiologist for thermal imaging exams. This is the first year we have tried thermal imaging on a polar bear, which has shown to be a good tool with Bai Yun, our giant panda. Ideally it would show increased heat indicating Chinook’s uterus gearing up for pregnancy. Of course, polar bear fur and skin is much denser than a giant panda’s, so this makes it a bit more challenging. And even ultrasound is challenging, as we are looking for very small changes in a very large bear.
So far, there is nothing to confirm a pregnancy, but the procedures are definitely a learning process. The great news, though, is that Chinook could not be a more willing patient. We are continuing to collect fecal samples and urine samples to be analyzed for several different hormones to see if one is a good indicator of pregnancy. The initial results from breeding through middle of summer looked promising; we will still have to wait, as it is still early, especially if she doesn’t give birth until January!
For now we are doing our best to set up a safe, secure, quiet environment for our girl. Her den was installed a few weeks ago, and we have given her two full bales of Bermuda hay. It is challenging not to rest in the big beds she has made—they look so comfortable! She also took a piece of sod from the polar bear yard and carries it to each bed to use as her pillow. We are careful not to disturb any of the preparations she is making. Every day we let her tell us what she wants to do. Currently, she seems to like to sleep in after breakfast and go out mid-morning for a nice swim and sun soaking. After about an hour or two she lets us know she would like to come back in, which we allow. We give Chinook her last meal of the day, and then she pretty much goes to bed. All we have now is the waiting! Is she or isn’t she? We just don’t know.
Kalluk and Tatqiq are both doing great. They are about to turn 12 at the end of this year. Tatqiq maintains her trim figure year round at 540 pounds (246 kilograms); female polar bears, for the most part, finish growing by the time they are 6 years old. Male polar bears, on the other hand, grow until they are 12 and can put on body mass for the rest of their lives. This year, our Kalluk not only gained back all the weight he lost during breeding season, when he had no interest in food, but is now up to 1,188 pounds (540 kilograms)! We thoroughly expect he will hit 1,200 pounds (545 kilograms) before he begins to lose interest in his meals for next year’s breeding season, if we have one! We may skip it if Chinook does indeed have cubs.

Approximately what time will the POLAR BEARS get their Halloween toys? I want to make sure my ZOO CAM is up and running for the holiday fun!
Moderator’s note: It’s usually 9 a.m.
sounds fun
Thank you so much for the update on our beautiful polar bears – seems as though we’ve been waiting a long time for any news. We can only hope that we will have cubs this season. Thanks for the great care, concern and love you give to these spectacular bears each day.
Kalluk is a fine handsome bear! I’m hoping you get some really useful data on a *pregnancy* and *birth*.
Thank you for the update. Love the pic of Kalluk with his carrot snacks IN the plunge! Whadda guy!
will you be having a “den cam” like you have had with Bai Yun? I have so enjoyed watching her cub!
Moderator’s note: Yes, if needed.
Yayyy … Thanks so much for an update ! Uhhggg, the waiting game ! I know we all pretty much have to wait and see, every season, but boy it would be nice if Miss Chinook would give some sort of hint !
Fingers crossed, Fingers crossed !!
We are so happy that Chinook may be pregnant. Will look forward to watching the bears get their Halloween toys tomorrow. We love your Polar Cam. We watch it every morning. Can’t start our day without it.
fingers and toes are crossed!
Will you be having a web cam in Chinook’s den like they have in Bai Yun’s?
It would be fantastic to see the birth and to watch the cubs grow, as we do with the baby panda.
Very interesting update. I am astonished that Kalluk is still growing. This year Kalluk and Chinook were in love for a long time and I hope that heat wave didn’t talk Chinook out of becoming pregnant.
keeping my fingers crossed
OK, now! We’re back on that pregnancy watch again, this time for Chinook!! And, we are back to all of that anxious nail biting, edge of the seat waiting, too! PLEASE, CHINOOK!! Give us a Turkey Day/Christmas Day present with one or two cubs! PLEEEEEASE?? We will all appreciate it, young lady!
Keepers, keep us updated about Chinook as much as possible, ok?
Thanks!

PS: Can’t believe that Kalluk and Tatqiq are both 12 years old now! Didn’t think that they were that old! How old is Chinook this year?
Moderator’s note: Chinook was born in February 1995, so she is 17 years old.
Maybe we can ask Bai Yun to send over some of her magical baby dust to Chinook!
my, my, my….Tatqiq looks so white and beautiful! I just love her.
Thanks for the update and the hint to watch tomorrow approx 9am PDT for the Halloween toys!!! Looking forward to it. In addition to watching SDZ polarcam I’ve been watching the cams for Churchill and enjoyed seeing some of Kalluk, Tatqiq and Shinook’s wild cousins
thanks for the update. I hope Chinook has cubs. it sounds very state of the art, the ways you are able to test for pregnancy with her.
I enjoyed the photo of Kalluk. I think I took a screen pic once where he had 2 carrots hanging from his mouth and they were in the shape of 2 fangs. funny and sweet.
I hope you take some video of the Halloween fun. I was so looking forward to watching live but have a 9:00 meeting! Ugh!!!
It sounds like Chinook is calling all the shots around there and being treated like a princess. As she should be. But what if she doesn’t have any cubs? Will she have to go back to the usual routine, regular bedding, no pillows, etc…? And if so, how much protest do you think she’ll give?
I’m hoping this isn’t an issue.
So nice to hear an update and how cute about her pillow! I love hearing about their behaviours! Crossing my eyes, fingers and toes for cubs this year, but just happy all three are healthy and doing well! I can’t believe Kalluk and Tatqiq are going to be 12! Do they have an actual known birthdate?
Moderator’s note: No, as they were born in the wild. You can read a bit of their history in previous posts, Polar Bear Answers and Polar Bear Anniversary.
Will you guys be posting photos and/or video of the polar bears getting their Halloween treats?
Moderator’s note: Yep!
Moderator comments and keeper stories are appreciated so much! We are learning about how carefully these animals are cared for. The San Diego Zoo and its employees do things right! We can enjoy the cameras from home and they entice us back as often as we can make it to see the real thing. Thank you.
Moderator’s note: You are very welcome!
was looking forward to watching bears get toys this morning, but the camera is not following them very closely
Moderator’s note: Yes, we are having some issues with our cam and are working to resolve them. We are so sorry!
Looking forward to the pictures and videos being posted.
I haven’t even seen a bear, only the pumpkin
Love the plastic ghost !! Wonder how long that’ll last !
why do you always focus on where the bears are not? for example while there swimming in the pool we watch that for a very little time then you swing the camera over to a pumkin sitting where the bears are not at and keep the camera there and not where the bears are so we can watch. I love watching the bears but you do this all the time and wish we can see more of them and playing in the water and other things?
Ron
Moderator’s note: It seems we have a “ghost” taking control of our Polar Cam. We are working to resolve the issue.
Ron,
I voiced my opinion once about the bad cam views and was chastised for it by another blogger. I came on-line at 9am to see our bears with their Halloween toys, and all I got to see for 45 min. was a pumpkin. Hopefully there is some video that the mods can post for us to watch. I come everyday to see these beautiful bears, and somedays, I get lucky and get to see them in the water playing, or Miss Chinook munching on her carrots non stop…lol…she is such a princess. I can sit for an hour and just watch Tatqiq sleep. Love them all!
Moderator’s note: Again, we apologize for the problems we experienced with our Polar Cam. The bears did receive their toys at 9:30 this morning, and our videographer was there to capture the fun. We’ll be posting that video soon.
Thank you, it is much appreciated. Hope they had some fun!
Yesterday and today, I got on the polarcam and saw one polar bear, and both times this bear was on that rock napping or sniffing the air. Is that Chinook all by herself after 3pm PDT (6pm EDT)? Today, the bear was taking a very nice hap with her big paw covering his/her face. So cute!!

Most likely Tatqiq. That rocky outcropping is her territory (although sometimes her brother cheats).
That would be Tatqiq..Chinook usually picks the rock over the waters edge…aren’t they beautiful?
Oh another baby cub maybe I hope so cute
I dug up the photo of Kalluk’s carrot fangs and posted it to the SDZoo facebook page:

(little blurry b/c it’s from the webcam)
Happy Halloween.
Moderator’s note: My first chuckle of the day! Thank you, mosaic_world.
Thats halarious…when was this?
you’re most welcome moderator.
Debbi: 7/13/12 around 4pm. as you can infer, I’m fairly obsessed with the animal cams (and wildlife conservation, behavior).
mosaic_world, I completely understand. Recently finding the cams myself, I watch constantly, even while they sleep, and I switch between cams, flipping to the panda cam as well.
Perfect for halloween! Vampire Kalluk
I’m at work just saw you pic love it thanks for memories
Barbara from Phoenix
Seeing Frankenstein floating face down in the water is funny, but I would have loved to see them get those toys…waiting for videographers video.
I was watching Tatqiq worrying a big bone just now, and it occurred to me to ask where the bones come from?
Moderator’s note: Good question on Halloween! We have suppliers that provide the bones. For the polar bears, they are usually cow femur bones.
I wish you many “Wild Child”s like Bai Yun and Gao Gao have!!! I keep checking the news on Chinook, she is so beautiful! Best to all of you in Polar land!
We have to get the Polar bears bigger kiddie pools. It is funny seeing just their bottoms on it and their heads not.
Loved the Halloween treats for all the animals was great. Thanks San Diego Zoo for the great care of this wonderful animals. Keep it up.
So with today, being the first official day of possible birth, are there any signs that Chinook is exhibiting in showing interest in denning, or that she is expecting anything different to happen in her daily routine ? Any difference with her hormone level, etc?
Nothing as of yet that points to confirmation of pregnancy, but certainly she has shown increase in appetite, big bed building, increased sensitivity to her environment, and a general slowing down of activity. We still have 88 days left!
Thank You JoAnne !!
88 days!!! Oh boy…. I’m not a very patient person. This is going to be tough — but it will be worth it to see a tiny cubby or 2! Come on Chinook… don’t disappoint us again this year … we have faith in you!! Hmmm….88 days — oh boy!
Moderator’s note: Didn’t someone go “around the world in 88 days”?
Good Morning from Kansas! Where can I find the video of the ultra sound? I’ve seen it mentioned a couple of times on here and maybe I’ve just missed the button? Keeping my thoughts positive! Have a great day!
Moderator’s note: We have a video of the ultrasound procedure in 2010. We haven’t videotaped the procedure this year.
Thank you, I will make sure to look that up! Y’all are doing a great job keeping us informed of all the great news of our furry friends!
Right now you can watch wild bears out at Cape Churchill:
explore.org/#!/live-cams/player/polar-bear-tundra-buggy-cam
I know that this is off-topic, but I thought people interested in one cam would like to see another. It doesn’t mean we don’t all love Tatqiq, Kalluk, and Chinook. And maybe Junior.
I’m also watching this. also Siku, the Great Dane pups. the new My Planet, My Part (polar bears cam) looks kind of interesting as well to encourage actions to help polar bears in the wild.
yes, the SDZoo polar bears are quite charming.
Hi i live in the uk my girlfriend has this app on her phone i think and we watch every week and most days when we can. I would like to see more of the place they live in and them eating and playing with toys!!!!!!!!!!!! Planing a trip well i want to go to your zoo next year sometime. all the best
Moderator’s note: We look forward to your visit, Richard!
How do you tell Tatiq and Chinook apart from each other?
Moderator’s note: Chinook is rounder and has a “beauty mark” at the corner of one eye.
Do the polar bears interact/react/show social recognition during times when their keepers are taking care of their daily needs? What are your favorite “one on one” experiences with them?
Moderator’s Note: Your questions have been forwarded to the Polar Bear Team.
I’m not the keeper, but I’ve seen bears at other zoos reacting to their keepers, much like dogs do.
I’m so happy for an update! I watch the bears everyday on the cam, which for my timing is almost always nap time for them, but they are still fun to watch. I guess it’s Tatqiq who lays on the pink “blankie”? One day I watched him drag it around and get this bed all ready with foliage. What a hoot! Keep your updates coming.
Tatqiq, is Kalluk’s sister, and believe it or not, that pink blankie, is a plastic pool, smashed down to a flat bed she loves to lay on. Well parts of her anyway…LOL She is beautiful, isn’t she. Kalluk usually has a blue one : )
its 3:30pm SD time…where are the bears…cam seems to be stuck on log for quite some time now.
what is the item that is standing against the log in the sand area (by the glass where the staff gives polar bear talks)? did someone make a toy for the bears? is it a bear birthday?
Moderator’s note: I’ve learned it is Kalluk’s favorite pillow, made from a donated firehose. Keepers propped it up in the beach area, as Kalluk often naps there.
oh, thank you. it looked like a sort of doll wearing shorts from my angle but I can see the rubber hose part now. it’s amusing learning about the bears’ favorite toys and bedding. it is true, I would sometimes check the cam after hours to see if Kalluk was still on the sand.
hope Kalluk gave a nice tip to the keepers for being mindful of his sleeping preferences. : )
How did Kalluk get himself so clean after last night. These bears are gorgeous!
Is that a snake Kalluk is eating in the water on the rock????
Doubtful, but since we did not see it, we couldn’t tell you what it was definitively. Our best guess is part of the pumpkin pulp they were given!
It was long and looked like a rope, but he was chewing on the bigger end of it, which made me think snake, but the cam was to blurry when I enlarged the photo. Then before he dove into the water with it, he whipped it back and forth a couple of times.
Does anyone answer our questions like the mods do for the panda cams?
Moderator’s note: Yes, any question a moderator cannot answer is sent to the blog author.
Hysterical. One of the bears is sleeping on top of the rock cave with a piece of palm tree bark on top of its head. Maybe its trying to keep the rain drops off of its face. Very silly bear!
What does Chinook do during her time away from the plunge. She is only out in the mornings, or as she pleases, yes ?
Moderator’s note: As she pleases.
Where is Kalluk in the late afternoon? Seems like we see Tatqiq every afternoon till closing, whats he doing during all this time?
He builds his bed up by the back of the exhibit and is often not in an attractive angle, meaning bum facing the camera, but he is also sleeping in one of his pools and/or palm fronds!
Well, I was wondering about Chinook myself! What is the latest on Chinook? Is she getting regular ultrasounds and thermal imaging screenings? Hope so! I would just love to watch her take care of a couple of baby polar bear cubs this year! Keep us informed about Chinook, ok? Will appreciate it alot!

PS: Just saw a lazy polar bear on the rock with a bunch of palm tree stuff under him or her on the polarcam–don’t know who that is, tho! He or she looked pretty comfy laying there!
Likely Tatqiq. She’s a lady.
You may have written about this in another post but I was wondering about Kalluk. He seems to be the only polar bear that goes to the glass door where one of the staff gives a talk. Could I take that to understand that Kalluk is more interested in or more tolerant of being near people than the other polar bears? or would you tend to attribute that more to his love of carrots and his existing habit of napping on the sand (more than the other polar bears)? Are polar bears considered to be social animals?
Moderator’s note: Your questions have been forwarded to our Polar Bear Team.
I also was wondering, when Kalluk goes to nap on the sand during the afternoon (with no staff giving a talk), can he hear the visitors on the other side?
JoAnne responds: The glass isn’t intentionally sound proof, but it pretty much is. It is two 1-1/2-inch pieces of glass laminated together. You can not hear anything, including pounding on it, plus the waterfall adds some great white noise that also helps block out noise from the other side.
The bears take turns at the interactive wall. All 3 of the bears really enjoy the interaction and have no problem being near our guests. Kalluk right now, though, seems to put going to the wall every afternoon as his plan. You will notice that when we approach breeding season, he usually has no interest in it, and it’s up to Tatqiq and Chinook!
Is the polar bear camera not working? Seems to be constantly focused on branch/log today….
Moderator’s note: Better?
Yes, thank you.
The zoo is closed, and it’s getting dark, i can still see Tatqiq on her rock, but barely…Does she and Kalluk stay on exhibit all night in the dark, and if so, how do they see at night? If not, where do they go, and what time of evening do they leave the exhibit?
Polar Team responds: The bears have access at night to their bedrooms and either the exhibit or the off-exhibit polar bear park area.
Is the camera not working? Stuck on branch?
Moderator’s note: At 12:12 p.m. it is focused on a bear under the ledge.
If I didn’t know better, I would swear tatqiq is the one who might be with cubs, shes got one heck of a nesting going on there….LOL But I DO know better!
Wishing everyone at SDZ a very nice, great Thanksgiving Day with families, friends, and the polar bears! Enjoy!!

Both Tatqiq and Kalluk are looking very lovely and furry these days.
I don’t mean to be rude, but the polar bear cam operators can take a lesson from the panda cam operators. They follow 3 bears throughout the day so we are always watching something. Your cam ops focus on one bear and never move, and at more times than I care to count, focus on nothing at all, like now. It looked like tatqiq went into the water and we are seeing the rock she sleeps on. I know I should be lucky to see them at all, but geez….
Moderator’s note: Our volunteer operators work ALL of the cams during their shift. They cannot be manning all of the cams at once, so they pick and choose where the action is. We are so lucky to have wonderful volunteers to provide our Cam coverage. We are always looking for more volunteers to cover shifts, which is usually done from each volunteer’s home computer.
I don’t doubt that they are wonderful, but have you ever watched the cam? For the past hour it has been focused on a ball in the water, not a bear to be seen.
I”m with you . I love to watch the polar bears, but its so frustrating sometimes – like right now.
Moderator’s note: We’re always looking for volunteers to man our cams, which can be done from home. If you are interested, please call our central volunteer office at 619-231-1515, extension 4030.
Oh there is a polar bear with black paws and black smudge on the face. Wonder if they are practicing going down a chimney. They look so relaxed.
why are the bear’s paw so black? not sure which bear is on view right now.. ;think it has been playing a lot on something black … but maybe it had fun
Why does the camera move off the bears when they are playing? It’s so frustrating.
Before I get over-excited, are you saying that someone like me, a homebody who lives on the east coast, can actually be a camera moderator for Polar Bears? And yes, this is a serious question as I would be interested in volunteering my time!
Moderator’s note: Yes indeed. But please know that you’d need to man all FIVE animal cams during your shift, not just the one for polar bears. That’s why sometimes action might be missed on one cam while our volunteer follows the action on a different one.
Are you saying that a volunteer mans all the cams in the zoo? the Pandas, polars, elephants, monkeys, and condors? There is not one person per cam? 5 volunteers per shift per cam?
Moderator’s note: Yes, one volunteer per shift must man all five cams.
Fun! And busy chasing all those lovely critters around! Very glad you cleared that up, so viewers might appreciate all the work that goes into it, though I think all of us were never aware that one person alone mans all the cameras, but rather thought not only were they volunteers who actually sat in a room at a computer AT the zoo (not at home) but also in charge of all the cameras! May I ask how long a shift is and how many hours you prefer people to man the cams or does it vary?
Moderator’s note: I must apologize. In an effort to find answers to the questions you’ve asked, I learned that I’ve given out incorrect information. All of our cam volunteers must train here at the Zoo and go through an extensive vetting and training process before we allow them access to control our cams. So yes, we do have cam volunteers who live outside of the San Diego area, but they were volunteers at our facilities before they moved away. I’m sorry if I got hopes up for those living far away! A shift is 1 to 3 hours, depending on time of day, and we ask a minimum of 4 to 6 hours per month.
Awww…totally understandable, but very disappointed! I was ready to offer a few hours a day, about 3-4 times a week! Drats!
Moderator’s note: I’m sorry too, Debi, for getting your hopes up.
Thanks for that little dialog… it’s helpful for those of us who get a little impatient with the camera operator. Thank you so much to the volunteers for following our precious furry friends in their daily antics. Tho, of late is seems snoozing is their favorite pastime. BTW: Was that Chinook doing the graceful backstroke in the plunge yesterday?
Any more word of a possible pregnancy for Chinook?
Moderator’s note: No word yet.
I enjoyed Debi’s question about the cam operators. My question is…do the moderator’s do the same thing as the cam operators? Do you work all the blogs at one time?
Debi…ask your family if you can have an extended vacation, go to San Diego, train and then become a cam operator. You sound like a person that would not only would love it, you would be GREAT at it.
Moderator’s note: We moderators check on ALL of the blogs as part of our many other duties as assigned.
Is that Chinook digging around the sand near the viewing mesh? Is this denning behavior? Or is it just looking for a cool damp napping nest? Thanks, I can’t tell them apart without at least 2 in the picture…
Oh my goodness…what a dirty bear! I see one very clean white bear on the rock and I wasn’t sure what I was seeing over by the visitor viewing area by the gate! That polar bear was sure having fun in the dirt! They’re so pretty! I enjoy watching them. Thank you for allowing us to view them! You all do a great job!
I love to see Tatqiq playing around in the water. Hes so active. Yesterday i saw him and I believe Kalluk (no beauty mark) playing around. I knew it was playing because Tatqiq would just sit on his butt while Kalluk was raised up on her back legs to push him. He obviously knows how to play well with the women and knows not to be too mean or strong. Such the gentleman!
But I do love just watching these beautiful white bears even just laying in the sun. I wanna say thanks to all of the moderators and camera operators and zoo keepers for taking care of them. I’m jealous in so many ways.
As always, fingers crossed for little babies soon to add to the cuteness!
Moderator’s note: Just to clarify, swayze, Tatqiq is one of our females, Kalluk is our male.
Any word yet on Chinook ? Any more signs she may be with cub(s) ?
Moderator’s note: No word yet.
Arrgghhh ! LOL.
Thank you Moderator !
Soo good to hear the polor bears are doing great cat wait to see if she desides to have Cuba this year or not! ? Have there ever been baby polor cubs born at the zoo??
Moderator’s note: Yes, we’ve had polar bear births here; the most recent birth was in 1986.
So, it appears we have about what, 30-40 days left to find out if Chinook is with
cub(s) or not ? Any chance of a new blog letting us all know if there have been any changes, if she is exhibiting any signs ? What her demenor is, etc., etc. ?
Moderator’s note: Check back soon.
Yipppy ! Thanks for the reply !! Fingers and toes still crossed !!
