Yun Zi was definitely a busy panda boy today! He was extremely playful this morning, rolling around in his bin and flipping it upside down. At one point, after he flipped the bin upside down, he crawled underneath it and started to walk with it on his back. He looked like he was pretending to be a turtle! Then he ran after a pile of bamboo, jumped on top of it, and began to wrestle the bamboo to the ground. After biting off some leaves and tossing it aside, he sprinted around the exhibit, playing soccer with his Boomer Ball.
Yun Zi played like this for about an hour or so. Our guests really enjoyed watching Yun Zi at play. It was definitely a great morning at the San Diego Zoo.

I saw the video that was posted, what a funny guy, love him
Where is the video posted?
Where is the video? I’d love to see it!!! Maybe SDZ can post it on their FB page?
plz do???
I watched him too he was hilarious! we couldn’t stop laughing. He really made our afternoon!
I did get a funny pic of him, I wonder if I can post on here??
Where can I find this video? would love to see it.
Carole from Scotlandand Crete
Where can I see a video of this?
Hi Kathy…is the video posted on You Tube…I looked, but couldn’t find it…I would so love to see Yun Zi in action!
Where’s the video?
Here’s are the videos that were posted in the previous Blog comments

Thanks DoxieMom for all the videos!
Great job as always. Thanks sooooooooo much!!
Loved both videos, DoxieMom — still can’t believe that cinnamon could make our boy act like such a wild child. But here’s the proof! What a delight to see him enjoying himself so much. Little did he know how much he was delighting his audience as well…
thank you so much for great videos,
lu
Thanks so much for the video, he was having so much fun. The poor hammock, it has got to be made very strong, to go through his rough play. That is a side of Yun Zi, I have not got to see in a very long time.
We had a cracked watching him. He is indeed a wild SD boy…
Happy Halloween Everyone, so sweet to let the panda have a little trick or treat. LOL. Love the videos of Yun Zi, he is so funny, makes my day him and his little bro. Moma sure has had her hands full. I was wondering if you call them by their names do they come to you???
Moderator’s note: They do respond to their names when those they know call to them.
thanks for sharing the post. Yunior can be a little ham I guess. so much young fun. hope that Doxie Mom caught some video. would love to see the replay but I can just imagine it. do the keepers have to space out how often they give the panda their favorite scent (as to prevent their getting bored with it)?
There’s a video posted on the previous post, it’s a lot of fun to watch
Yeah..Doxiemom…did you get it? I subscribe to your videos.. Ciaobella!!!
Is cinnamon to Pandas as catnip is to cats?
Moderator’s note: It must be. They all seem to enjoy it immensely!
Does each panda have his/her own fave scent? What about Gao? I know ZA’s Yang Yang loves Tabasco sauce!
Bai Yun apparently loves pine and ylang ylang (and men’s cologne!)
I happened to tune in and was laughing out loud at Yun Zi’s antics. He flippped out backwards from his hammock, then ran around in circles, then started crawling up the tree but did a backwards sommersault – he did this a few times. In between these flips he would run around the area. I really enjoyed the show! I didn’t get to see the box trick but can imagine it was fun to watch, also.
I just love watching the Panda’s that baby is a love, the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. So happy to be able to watch him grow up, love that cute squeek he makes!!!
Just wondering, as I was watching a panda outside munching on some bambo,
Are the pandas ambidexterous, or like humans, do they have a dominant hand?
Thanks for your response. : )
Moderator’s note: They do seem to prefer one hand over the other, but can use either one with ease.
I was fortunate to be able to see this live, well about 15 minutes of it anyways. He also gave everyone a look at his wonderful somersaults. There were quite a few children watching so I am sure they went home happy to have seen Yun Zi put on an incredible panda show.
i <3 Yun Zi…
Yun Zi knows how to have a great time!! Thanks for the update.
very Zhennie! I love it!
Reenie: I thought of Zhennie as well. She kept me in stitches much of the time and I miss her a lot…
Is there a video anywhere to see Yun Zi having fun? I would really love to see that.
See above by Doiemom (our heroine as usual).
How cute
Yunni is a happy bear who enjoys life. And judging from his antics with the cinnamon box, he enjoys his life a LOT!
I got lucky enough to see this with my boss was where laughing at him it was great to see Yun Zi. He is my first cuby I watched and has a special place in my heart. Have fun
I have a question . . . we were able to watch YunZi as a wee one in the room immediately outside the den, with the scale and the waterer. Is this coverage disabled now?
I think you were seeing Bai Yun in that room. That’s her bedroom with the scale and waterer and is directly connected to the den where she and cubbie spend their time.
When SDZ switched to HD cams, I don’t think they had enough cameras to replace all them. HD and the old cams cannot be streamed together. So they decided to give us the better stream with the HD cams. Therefore, I think only the den, garden room and the two outside exhibits are available to us.
I do know from previous comments that SDZ is trying to figure a way so we can view the bedroom because we know that, when the little one becomes more active, he will be spending less time in the den. I think SDZ is going to try to lessen the moans they will get when we cannot see the little one.
Oh, how sorry I am that I missed this. In the first place I adore Yun Zi as the first cub I watched growing up. Beyond that, young pandas in general are SOOOOO fun to watch. I remember spending time down at SDZ before Su Lin & Zhen Zhen were sent to China. Zhen Zhen used to put on the most amazing acrobatic show. I called her “Zhen Zhen the Great” because she could perform like a circus star. I remember watching her in what used to be the classroom exhibit and got some wonderful pics of her daring deeds. So now Yunnie is giving us this same charming entertainment. Gotta love these panda kids — they just are made in a way that tugs at our heartstrings…
I was able to catch this live on the cam and it was wonderful! I have never seen such a reaction because not only did he enjoy the cinnamon but the after affects were a riot with him running around his play area, climbing, falling, posing for the people, rolling, doing somersaults, etc.! I’ve never see a panda bear so active! He was adorable! Now I know what to do when I need some energy. Roll in cinnamon!
Very cute story! Where is the video? Thanks!
See Above (from our heroine Doxiemom)
is it unusual for Bai to be in the den without cubby? I guess he’s old enough to be by himself but for some reason I thought she only came into the den to spend time with him (or put him in).
saw them last night (did not note time) she was doing a
SHALLOW bamboo fluffing in the den, each movement smacking
Chubbers on his hind nd. Shen she slowed down he seemed to leave the den,but when I readjusted the smalala widow I keep in the corner f my screen I found hm on the den opening ledge up by the side waiting for her to settle down. She eenually coovered herelf in a light coating of bambooand sat up to snack.
I think I forgot to “Proof” that one and I hit wrong keys (usually the one next to my aim) or didn’t hit hard enough, or too many times….or It is my Secret Code.
from other people’s posts, I wonder if I tuned into the camera some time after cubby rolled out (or maybe Bai walked out with him and then wanted to take her me time in the den). after a short while I did see her grooming cubby in the den so her down-time was not extended.
I got to see about 20 minutes of him playing yesterday! It was so much fun! I could swear that when he would lay in the box, he was thinking “Look! I fit!” My favorite was when he would run around and then do somersaults!
Is Yun Zi usually that active and playful? If so, is it generally around that time?
Star of today~Super Star of tomorrow we give the world Yun Zi. I too caught some live, but right after the box, so I thought gymnastic routine and safety view of Drop and Roll (it is our local fire season). I too enjoyed all I saw, then caught up with the lovely Videos by D~Mom—she gives great video. Love grammmie
I have been asked to not be a drop out without notice. Health issues have caused that in the past, but they were sudden and unpredicted. Today I decided upon 2 weeks of bedrest for my back and neck to see if we cannot get them to heal up. So if anybody wonders what happened to me just let them know I am reading all I can but it is hard to type laying down. I hope to be up and running in 2 weeks, except for the time to catch up on my emails and such. I leave knowing that some of the best stuff will be on videos for me to watch, or photos to see, and I will catch all the wild live action I can, but hope to sleep a lot. If you want to send me come company Any of our Pandas will be welcome…Love Grammmie
I wish you well Grammie. I enjoy your posts and perspective on current panda goings-on.
Yes, take care of yourself now… because Bai may need a lot of help later with this one coming up! Will miss your fun and informative post, before long you will be back in the swing of things, hopefully Yun Zi hasn’t completely demolished the place in the mean time!!! (*)(*)
That would be Demolition Part 2 or 3 by Yun Zi.
Grammie, you take care of yourself. I’ll miss your posts, but your health is more important.
Grammie: I really appreciate your “heads-up” on this because I remember how concerned we all were when you dropped out of the blog for a while. I have to say I was imagining the worst and was so relieved to see you back on the blog “with a vengeance” as the saying goes. Please rest, get well and be back with us other pandafans soon…
With a blood infection and no Pandas to keep me company I almost got “the worst” but I did not know that until I was out of the rest home(there to regain strength), just how close I got. I hope to avoid that area the rest of my life!!!!
Happy Panda viewing to you all…..be sure to give the gang (of pandas) a hug and a kiss when you tuck them into bed. Love grammmie
Grammmie, Remember Laughter is the best medicine! Just keep your computer up and keep watching even if you are unable to post, we will understand. Also, don’t forget to take your medicine from the Doctors or the SDZ Panda Staff may have to step in with a sharpie! Yikes!!! (Ö)Ö)
Yikes is right, but they are really getting good with the Panda Babies.
hope you are feeling better soon. we’ll send you some cinnamon to help with your spirits. (Yun Zi’s special blend)
Gert well soon, my prayers are with you.
Get well soon. We all appreciate your wisdom and humor!!
OMG..sooooooo funny..baby took a somersault out of the den!!..I see a lil step but he just rolled into the other room. Mom just sat there eating her bamboo. He is such a roly poly ya just wanna squeeze him
I would love to see this video of Yun Zi but I can’t find it on the site. Does someone have the link?
Thank you.
See Above in replies near top.
So glad to see Yun Zi, was wondering how he was doing, a big boy now. Love his little brother, a little cutie. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
is there a video on Yun Zi’s antics for replay? Hope so.
Great post on my wild child ~ so glad I was able to capture this treasure on video
Yun Zi on a cinnamon high was entertaining and such a joy to watch!!
Meanwhile back in the den, cubbie has been one very busy 8.2 pound panda!! Friday night he was determined to follow Bai Yun out of the den after a cuddling session. This morning around 6:20am Pacific Time, he was able to crawl out of the den twice … and it was Bai Yun’s reaction that surprised me.

http://youtu.be/8tihHfcaRos
Good luck, Bai Yun ~ you have your paws full with his little guy!!
Adorable, DoxieMom. Thanks for posting.
LOL It’s a lot safer to be outside when Bai starts digging for the good bamboo that she had hidden in the den
I saw come back last night without the kid. She started digging and found some good bamboo. She spent time enjoying it peacefully. When she was done, she went out to bring the kid back in.
I have never seen any cub roll out of the den as much as this one does!
Plus I think that Bai pins hin down or holds him so he uses his muscles more while trying to get away from her. She is building his muscles up to start walking shortly.
Other wise he would be just a sleepy slug.
Right now it’s 10:25 PDT and Bai is eating, and cubbie is doing some very cute somersaults around the den. He takes after his big sister Zhen Zhen!
Ohhh, love the number 8.2! Thanks for letting us know that Chubbers is indeed chubby and growing well. Love the videos, thy are soo much fun to watch! Your videos, DoxieMom, have become a survival “kit” for my busy daughter, a surgeon in training, during her brief moments of relaxation. A HUGE thank you! Keep up a god job. My whole family is now checking up on pandas several times a day.
Irma if I ever need a surgeon I know who to call for a reccommendaton. It is nice that the Pandas are so quick to make us relax~~~I hope they keep working for her…I understand her course in life is not an easy one, and takes a talented, dedicated, intellegent +, person to do it. Kind of like our Panda Nanny Keepers, and blog operators.
And now I have a full understanding (from video two) of why Bai was smacking him on the botttom with each dig of her paw, I tuned in in time to see the swatting of his botttom and his hiding in the doorway, up against the side of the door, watching her. He did get a few good swats to toughen up his toushie!!!
8:35 am love being able to see Gao Gao, munching on boo as usual. : )
please give us a place to see Yun Zi playtime.
where’s the video?!
Ya when I was there a couple weeks ago he was climbing trees and being silly gota love the yun zi
Here is the link for those who missed Yun Zi annointing himself with cinnamon.

What a cute Cinnamon Roll..YunZi
What a face / we must have the most beautiful Pandas in the whole wide world/close up of Prince Fluffy Butt eating his boo and sitting on the high branches this morning. Waiting for his fans. What a ham. I must go down to the zoo in the morning and see him in person before it gets too hot / we are having Santa Annas this week. They have misters to help keep the animals cool. Grammie stay well /we will miss you while you sleep and rest. And hurry back to chat with us all. You have a good sense of humor.
Thank you to all who are so kind.
This video was so funny! He is so cute. Glad to see him and Gao Gao to see how they spend their day.
I was hoping that Yun Zi would play sailor yesterday when a tub was place inside his pond. Alas, he got in carefully, sat down for 5 seconds and got back out carefully. Totally ignored it for enjoying his bambool.
Oh yes, I saw that, I was waiting to see what he was going to do too, he is so cute… isn’t Yun Zi the one that doesn’t care for the water?
Bai deragged him into the pool kicking and screaming for a bath…he wanted no part, until there was a floating toy he could stand on to surf.
I guess he finally grew into those webbed toes…….
Grammmie and DoxieMom, Are there any videos on these events? I think it would be fun to see.
I have never seen Yun zi,s pond. Doxie mom do you have a video of him playing in his pool
Tanda, his pond/pool is shown at the beginning of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSuuJkracvs
late sat. eve
i have decided that the lil fella lying on his back is really a stuffed animal. he is just too cute to be real!
i also believe y’all just take our little prince out and tickle play with him and replace him with a stuffed toy.
fess up!
(just kiddin you know)
oh, how i would love to hold him.
hugs to the bears,
joan
I agree, Joan, he might just be the cutest stuffed panda on earth and maybe the keepers just can’t keep their hands off of him. Right now he is lying on his back with his hnd legs pulled to his chest. A little earlier it looked like he was sucking his front paws. If there were a stuffed panda that looked just like him, I’d buy it in a minute just to cuddle and kiss.
poppy
me too!
joan
If I were you guys I would not let Bai hear you guys talking about cuddling, kissiing and squeezing anything like CC # 6, she might think you mean the real thing, and that gets her fur up……
Ladies,
May I offer a suggestion. My wifey when she isn’t looking after our cubby does log onto her iPAW and reads this blog. She loves reading how much you love our cubby and we, both, appreciate and thank you for loving our family. However she will not abide any cuddling or kissing of our cubby. A little scritching on the head, a belly rub and maybe a few strokes is all. You have been warned and do note my wife is very fast and can climb trees. When she is upset, there is no place to hide from her. Yunnie and I cannot protect you.
Other than that, my Bai is he sweetest most adorable lady panna in the world ever in my books.
Panda hugs,
GG
Momma Bai is keeping one eye on them!, hear tell lately, she has had her magnifier out inspecting the Panda Staff and Panda Nanny Keepers! …her baby is so irresistible! Heaven help the first one caught! (ö)(ö)
I was very fortunate to see this live on Panda Cam and LOVED every minute of it as Yunior lived up to older sister’s Zhen Zhen’s nick name of Zoom Zoom as I’ve never seen him move that fast….LOL…. I keep rewatching DoxieMom’s YouTube videos as this was a Beary Great Not To Be Missed Experience…

Too funny, TY!!!
Great videos!!!
I have been looking through the photographs of Yun Zi when he was a cubbie. the new cubbie is the double of him, Gao Gao and Bai Yun make cute cubbies. It was nice to see Yun Zi having a lovely time he is such a happy panda.
last night I was rewatching the videos of Yunnie and his cinnamon high. then I looked at the related videos by Doxie Mom. I watched a couple of Yunnie’s videos from a couple years back. right now it’s hard to imagine Yun Zi that small. and also to imagine little cubby becoming as big as Yun Zi. but I hope he likes cinnamon too!
DoxieMom…..Thank you so much for the video of the pond. Does he get in the water and take a bath? Wonder what would happen if they put cinnamon in the water. lol
If his performance the other day is any indication he might drown trying to get it off the bottom of the pool ! ! !
Grammie I don’t think he would drown, he wouldnt
stay still that long. lol He is such a joy isn’ he:) You take care of yourself Grammie.
Grammie I don’t think he would stay still long enough to drown. lol Isn’t he a fun one to watch:) Grammie you take care of yourself.
Thank You~I will, just haven’t actually started yet…..
I have watched three cubbies beginning with ZZ, but I watched as Mei Sheng spent his last few months in San Diego before moving to China. Has he been successful in fathering new cubbies? I’ve read news of Hua Mei and Su Lin but not too much info about Zhen Zhen and Mei Sheng. I just love watching cubbie 6 because he seems to have grown much faster than ZZ and Yun Zi but his weight is lower. Moderator can you update news of Mei Sheng and Zhen Zhen?
Moderator’s note: The latest info I have is that Mei Sheng has not fathered any cubs yet, but he has had some breeding opportunities, and Zhen Zhen is doing well at the Mount Emei Xianzhi Zhujian Ecological Park.
Yesterday our not-so-small cubbie #6 turned 13 weeks old, 91 days! Around 11:30am Pacific Time, Bai Yun (facing the camera), had a sweet play and grooming session with her cubbie. Then, under the watchful eye of Bai Yun, he attempted to walk.
2012-10-28 Mommie and Me Play Time on his 13 Week Birthday
http://youtu.be/FtNQmxxPeMo
D~Mom, Thanks for the great video. It looks like the second half is Huggy Bear, Nuzzle Bear and stop the Baby Bear from getting out of the den door alone.
We were there and saw it IN PERSON! I FINALLY got my Mom to the zoo after her illness. It was worth the wait for her to see her favorite panda, Yunnie, run and be more active than I have ever seen him! PLUS he did it again on Sunday, playing soccer for us all and laughing all the way! Thanks SDZ Panda moderators and staff for being so kind to me and my Mom! See you in the spring!
So…. is it just me or is the Panda Cam down? I was watching this morning and went back to it just now and I’m getting an error message. Anyone? Thank you…
Moderator’s note: It’s not you, and we are working to correct the problem.
Whew! Thank you…. you guys are sooooooo great!
I can’t get any of the SDZ or Park cams and was frustrated. But with the news coming from the east coast about their storms, this is just an annoyance I can tolerate. My prayers are for those affected by this storm, humans and animals.
Moderator’s note: Indeed!
today I’m having issues watching the cams using the Chrome browser but it is ok for me on Firefox. I thought perhaps my browser was out of date.
The storm here has already been deemed by CT’s governor as the “biggest catstrophe of our lifetimes.” There has already been video of large deer being washed away and killed by waterand wind. Say a prayer for the safety of all animals in zoos from DC up to RI.
wow, that is quite a sad image. I did not even think about wildlife.
be safe people on the east coast. thoughts are with you.
We’re hanging in so far in Brooklyn.
Roger Williams Zoo in Rhode Island (where I’m from) re-opened today. I remember going there all the time as a kid and going to ZooCamp there. I was really relieved to hear that all of the animals there are safe and sound.
Moderator….what do they do in the zoo,s in jeopardy of these huge storms? If there is a flood danger do they move the animals.
San Diego Zoo Global responds: All accredited zoos have emergency plans, and we all work together to support each other. At this time we have not received any requests for assistance and do not have updates regarding their status.
I hope it is okay that I invited the East Coast Pandas to come stay at our Zoo for a few days, catch up with the family, see Po and the new baby and stay out of danger. We do have a few enclosures not in use at the moment, and they would bring their own Nanny Keepers with them………
Sounds good to me… I’ll go get them!
Then we can find out if the bear kissing issue is only a SDZ issue or is it a global issue. Just in case, keep an eye on those Panda Nanny Keepers! (O)(O)
LOL Will Do!
It’s global. I’ve kissed several youngsters in China. Couldn’t resist.
(O)(0)!!! OMG!!! I am so green with envy I am beside myself, do NOT mention this to Bai. …@(*)(*) Dreaming… (*)(*)
Thank you for your kind honesty Mary from Brooklyn. It is a good thing you did not put a last name, or get any more specific with where you live…..if there is an investigation started by Bai Yun I would not want her to track you down too easily for questioning/ Stay safe….Love Grammmie
It was Thursday, my daughter and I were there. Yunnie was having a fun time for about an hour.. Somersaults, running, ball playin g,and using his tub. On his head, i nside, facedown all of him and just having the time of his life playing and entertaining everyone. He is jt so adorable, and is so lved. Gao GAo was sleeping. Then on Sunday morning. GAoGAo ws awake and out and eaTING BOO, THEN DECIDED TO CHECK OUT HIS STASH OF TREATS ON HIS ROCK, AND THEN AFTER CAREFULLY KEEPING SOME FOR ANOTHER DAY, WENT BACK TO bOO BREAKDFAST. i HAD NEVER SEEN HIM PERSONALLY BEFORE. hE IS SO BEAUTIFUL IT TAKES YOUR BREATH AWAY. sUCH PERFECTION OF FACE AND FEATURES.!! AND SUCH A DEAR. SMILES. SEEMS SO CONTENTED!
i HAD AN IDEAL TIME FOR BOTH. tHANKS. mET rITA ALSO ON sUNDAY MORNING.HE WAS CLICKING AWAY AT HER CAMERA WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS CLICKING AT HERS, wE GOT OVER 150 PICTURES. SUNDAY, YUNNIE GOT
TIRED PLAYING BALL AND RUNNING SO HE GOT A DRINK AND WENT UP HIS TREE. HE WATCHED ANN, MY DAUGHTER, TAKE SOME PICS FOR A COUPLE, WITH HIM AS BACKGROUND. F.ABULOUS. SPRNG WILL COME AND THE BABY WILL B E OUT OUT AS THE PANDAS SAY. THEWORLD WILL BE AT SDZ WITH ALL OF US.
It sounds like a great time.
thanks cam operator for the shows of Yunnie and Gao Gao today. even with Gao Gao sleeping (caught a very cute yawn and fuzzy mittens) and Yunior running around, it was very nice to watch.
(moderator) are the panda cam operators all volunteers? are other animal cam operators also volunteers?
Moderator’s note: All of our cam operators are volunteers. Aren’t they wonderful? We couldn’t offer these views without them.
Darn it, I wish I lived in San Diego. I’d volunteer in a heartbeat!
Moderator’s note: Most of our cam volunteers work from home, so please feel free to apply. Visit our Volunteer page for more info.
So everybody who can get your volunteer shoes on and book feet to the San Diego Zoo~there must be a shift that still l needs covering, and your audience will be very apprecative. Love Grammmie
thanks for the reply. wow, you must have a large team of volunteers. there are a lot of hours covered by the cams. thanks cam volunteers.
aint technology wonderful?? after reading this thread, I thought at first that you ‘enticed’ volunteers by offering free zoo admission on the days they came to the zoo to do the camera stuff. Wasn’t even thinking that this job could be done off-site!!
Now, speaking of off-site, many of us bloggers have volunteered for off-site cubbie watching .. well, not that we would take the baby off-site, mind you, but we could baby sit remotely if Bai needs help.
Dear MO World I only thought of Gao Gao as having FluffyFurry Sexy Feetsies, I like fuzzy mittens and slippers too…thank you.
As for remote cam duty~~I am no whiz with these new fangled machines, but wish I was, and with reliable health~I would remote Panda~sit. Now we know about remotes maybe the volunteeer list will grow, since so many out there are not able to get to or stay at the zoo, but might be fine with doing it from home….good item to mention Moderators…..love grammmie
I was thinking that if you went to the zoo to Man (or Woman) the cams you got to go “behind the scenes”, maybe catch a glimpse of a Panda or 2 you might not get to from the regular visitor area. I can be a real sap!
To all of the pandafans that are affected by Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast and New England states, please stay safe indoors and just ride her out! If you have electricity, God bless you, and you can still watch the pandacam! To those of you that have lost power, be patient! There’s help coming your way! You’ll get your power back on hopefully in a couple of days, but if not, go to a friend’s house that has power and watch the pandacam there for awhile! That’ll take some of the stress from your minds for now!
All of the zoos in those Northeast states are closed down today and possibly tomorrow. Praying for all of the staffs, keepers as they stay and take care of the animals for the next couple of days until they can reopen. The National Zoo is closed today and possibly tomorrow due to the affects of Sandy, but I did check all of their animal cams and they are still online for now, especially the 2 pandacams. I Sure do hope that DC does not lose their power with the heavy winds that they are experiencing now. It’s been about 5 years since NZ had to close for a week solid due to that massive snowstorm back around 2008-9!
Been on the SDZ pandacam, and missed Bai and little boy! They were outdoors again! But, I did see Yuni today! He was in his big green hammock eating his boo like his daddy Gao, then he jumped down, sat in that rock bowl, then moved to a corner of his yard. I did see that video of Yuni having sooooo much fun with that box full of cinnamon that Doxiemom put up for us! Thanks, Doxie! That was fun to watch!
Gonna go and check the pandacam again! See ya later!

I do not know why but when their pools are empty(the rock bowls) they like to sit in them eating bamboo. Sometimes the Nanny Keepers fill the “bowls” with Boo just for fun.
Back on the pandacam again, and just saw Gao Gao! He was roaming around, eating some boo, stuck his nose into another huge stash of boo in the rock bowl, then climbed a log to the rock that has some carrots on top of it and started to munch on them! His rear end is really dirty, tho! Where did he sit at to get that dirty?
Gonna go back to the cam and hopefully catch Bai and her little boy on it!

I’m in the middle of Hurricane Sandy and it is VERY windy and rainy. The second story of my house is actually shaking. But watching the beautiful, round, sweet, relaxed bears eat their bamboo in the sun and shadows erases all thoughts of Sandy. Thank you SDZ and bears!
Caroline, hope you came through Sandy okay.
a heartfelt thank you to the cam operators, mods, keepers, vets , all who allow us to enter the world of such beauty.
most of us could never see these magnificient bears without your work.
peace,
joan
So glad for the diversion of your Pandacams as today was not the best of days with Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast…. ABC News ,NYC now states that 1 out of 3 Customers in CT.NJ,& NY do not have any electricity and mine has been on and off all evening as we deal with 75 MPH wind gusts… Coney Island now flooded and told tap water is unsafe even if bolied… Lower Manhattan now flooded and with no electricity as transformers have been exploding due to salt water flooding and NYU Medical Center is being evacuated as their back up generator flooded and failed… All roads in CT,NJ,& NY are now closed along with all but 2 midtown tunnels leading into NYC from NJ and Brooklyn Queens… Wasn’t the best day for my Bearthday as my lights are flickering again…Now be listed as the worst storm in history here in the northeast…
I hope you are OK with your shelter and food/water. I am thinking a huge amount of patience will be necessary for anyone living in your area.
Dennis, keep hanging in there! You should be one of the luckier people to get your power back on in the next couple of days or so. Hope you have a battery powered laptop so that you can watch the pandacam. You are right in saying that Sandy will be one of the most destructive, deadliest, and costliest storms since Katrina. Keep watching pandacam and be happy with the pandas! At least you are not dealing with 3 feet of snow!!

Were it me I would be lucky to get an hour out of my laptop batteries….I hope everybody had lots of extra ones to keep abreast of the news.
I stocked up and am fortunate that apartment complex utilities are under ground… Only lost power for about an hour and a half as I guess the trees I heard snapping in two last night caused problems outside of our complex… We have 2 roads into complex as we are on a mountain side and the state road we access was washed away as the streams at both sides of this major road turned into rivers washing part of the road away and dropping 100 foot tall trees…. We are still told to not drive by our Mayor via reverse 911 calls and our Governor still has a ban on all traffic other than emergency vehicles….
Happy Bearthday Dennis and I hope things are okay today for you!
Happy Bearday Dennis…Do you know of any Pandas who share your Bearday????
I’m glad I have Electricity and can watch Panda Cam as many people still don’t with predictions of up to 2 weeks for restoration for many… My heart goes out to those that lost family members as Property can be replaced where Human Life can’t…Death Toll so far for CT,NJ,NY now at 64 and rising…US Post Offices , Banks and Gas Stations and Grocery Stores and Restaurants closed due to Power being Out… Unable to get into NY thru any Bridge or Tunnel with less than 3 people in a car … Hoboken, NJ is still under water and Carlo’s Bakery for you Cake Boss Fans both locations are closed due to lack of Power…. Will head out tom’w hoping to find stores that are open as it is scary as no traffic lights are functioning as well due to power outages… Sandy will not be forgot by the Northeast as it will be years until certain areas will be rebuilt in the Northeast if people are allowed to rebuild in areas that flooded for the first time in history….
watching Gao Gao nap in his bin atop hay. he reminds me of a grandpa and a child at the same time.
otherwise watching news coverage of hurricane Sandy. be safe folks on the east and NE US.
Safe and sound in our little patch of Brooklyn. Can’t do much, because transportation infrastructure is closed down and grocery stores haven’t restocked. This too shall pass.
Glad you are safe….If a Panda needs a place to stay would you volunteer your home????
I would but . . . . .
Yunnie, on his cinnamon high, was such a pleasure to watch!! Thanks DoxieMom for the videos and Alyssa for the post. Too bad I didn’t see him play soccer though
Today I saw Gao Gao sleep in his bin filled with hay. That looked cute too
Well I have to say that Mr. Yunnie is definitely a California Bear. Hammock, sun, zoo staff to feed him, and some cool waves. He needs a surf board and he is all set.
He has a “surf board” (used for enrichment) in his pool
Doxiemom captured some of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSuuJkracvs
A 3 year old’s work is never done….even at a party. Surf, taste cake, presents, taste cake, more presents, harvest bamboo up high, and did you see how strong and straight his rear legs are when he stands up, perhaps form the day he saved momma when she was climbing a tree~in the wrong direction?
To catch the “BABY” surfer he was go back in the youtube and flickr streams betweem late Feb and July 2010 should get you a view if it is on video. I will look for a more narrow date after resting.
These are from D~Mom………………

http://www.flickr.com/photos/pandalover19 Does anybody have other folk’s links for videos????
Thanks Well he is all set. What a cool California bear!!!!
And do not forget there are photos of him being a “Swinger” too~~when they hang his swing for him.
Dear Moderators, I have a question for you: was wondering if you noticed any patterns in Bai’s feeding schedule? How often she actually nurses the Cubbie? Looks like sometimes she just plays with him. I assume it changes with the little one growing up, but it seems that Bai offers herself quite often. I could be wrong though, as I am not able to watch the cam continuously (unfortunately). Thank you for answering.
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to the Panda Team.
I read a few cubs ago that as cubs get older they nurse fewer times because they are able to hold more milk. Right now it looks like Bai & cub are having nursing play time
Thank you!
This certainly changes over time. For the moment, she appears to cluster feed at times, nursing every few hours and then having periods with longer breaks in between. It’s not unusual for her to go 6 hours between feeds occasionally.
Oh, I am (and many others) learning a huge deal from all your answers. Thank you, Panda Team!
We love the Nanny Keepers and all they do for our bears, but try not to be too full of praise, or the Panda team may want us to take them all out for Pizza like little league teams.
The little guy is sure active. Mom seems to want him to take a nap and he wants to go. Is he at that age where he will sleep a lot less and want to go explore? Is mommy Bai trying to encourage him to take a nap when she pulls him back under her?
Or he wants to sleep in His favorite spot!
Goodness….what is Bai trying to do??? Looks like she’s trying to climb the walls of the den to get out the top! Is something wrong???
Just a little excercise and close~up for the fans.
Hey, pandafans! Got the news that National Zoo will be opening back up tomorrow, Wednesday, October 31 after 2 days being closed for everyone up there to visit the animals. They checked out their facilities from stem to stern, cleaned up any debris around the zoo, made sure that everything worked including electricity, and now they are good to go for tomorrow. I checked their animalcams, and all of them are working except for a couple of them that are out right now. Both pandacams are on to watch Mei Xiang and Tian Tian. All of the other zoos in the Superstorm Sandy impact states may not reopen for a few more days because of possible damage, debris, power outages. Zoos such as Cape May (NJ) and Brooklyn (NY), among others in that area, may not reopen due to them being in the heart of where Sandy hit. So, people in those areas will need to be patient until those zoos feel that it’s safe to reopen.
Just watched pandacam, and Bai and her little boy are in the den having mother/son bonding time, and it was funny to watch. Bai was using her cubby as a ball to tumble around with, nibbled all over him, then she laid him down on her stomach on his back and covered his face with her big paw, then she let him down on the floor and she hunched over him. Then the funny part started! Little boy wanted to go do some walking and worked to get himself out from under his mom! Bai would not have none of it, and she pulled him back under her with her paws or her mouth! Little guy tried about 3 times to get out from under mom, and mom would pull him back under her all 3 times! All little man wanted to do is practice his walking skills! Always fun to watch this chubby cubby!
Back to pandacam!

It looks like he is as tenacious as mommie~should make full on outdoor enclosure time a lot of fun to watch…..thanks for the heads up, I missed it.
Actually, the Brooklyn Zoo at Prospect Park will not be able to open until the park opens. Currently, all NYC parks are closed to the public.
Does Gao Gao have a place he can take a bath like Yunnie does? He sure is dirty. lol How about Bai does she have a pond?
Moderator….A few weeks or so ago I ask about the bears eating the bamboo…I ask why they take a bite on one side and then move the bamboo to the other side of their mouth and take a bite. One of the moderators said they would ask the panda team. I think that is so interesting.
Thanks
Moderator’s note: Keeper Jennifer posted a reply directly under your question in the comments for the post Panda Exam 9: Crawling. Here it is again:
The pandas split the bamboo with their canines and rotate each side and take bites using their back molars. This is for even wear and tear of the teeth. It keeps their teeth even and healthy so they last for a long time. Bamboo is a very hard grass to eat.
Both Gao and Bai have small pools for drinking, bathing, splashing.
well, well, well… I’ve noticed that Yunnie is very careful NOT to touch the water in his pond, and I’m sure he isn’t taking his baths either
He’s just like his daddy
When we ask a question or make a comment and want to know how it was recieved we need to check back on at the least the last two blog comment sections to see if we were answered. Sometimes it is hard because the blogs can change after a day, but ususally there is 2 or more days inbetween. With a bit of practice you will learn to skim through to find your comments for review and answers. If it is 2 or more blogs back without answers you might want to ask again…none of us is perfect enough to do all that needs doing.
Do the girls get bigger pools to cool them off during yearly “breeding heat”???
Only Bai knows when it’s time to end the denning phase but does the panda team have studies on her previous cubs. I don’t remember her bringing in huge stalks of bamboo into the den before. She house cleans every day then watches the little one crawl out of the den. She must have an invisible line & when he goes to far she pulls him back. Too funny

Moderator’s note: With her previous cubs, she took them to the garden room from 11 to 17 weeks. Newest cubby is 13 weeks old.
Thank you
Well, guess there are no volunteers working tonight. The cam was pointed at the dirt outside and now its all black since the sun set.
Hope the volunteers are not back east where they are without power!
At 7:33p.m. Yunior Time we are getting enough light to see a bear moving around in the outdoor enclosure, but I cannot get a good enough look at the head of the bear to identify as Yunor or Gao Gao. I need a better view of the head shape or to compare the ears, But I still get to enjoy the bear when he crosses the camera line.
My drop out notice was not meant to garner your great good wishes, which are very much appreciated, but it seems my son and housemate is not aware of how bedrest works. So far he has brought me a couple of meals he cooked (becasue he wanted to cook), and anything else I ASK for….but he is not a happy camper. Bedrest is laying down except for eating and bathroom needs. He has not figured out that he needs to follow behind to wash up the dishes I use, etc. I think we will have a bit of a talk this week and maybe try again next week to start. He did get online to order me an iPad so I can stay in touch with you guys, but lay down too. I can also stay in touch with the Pandas on their iPaws. That is really important. How we all enjoy the notes we get from Bai, Yunior and Gao Gao here on the blog comments….what would we do without them.
Too bad you are not a Panda Bear with your own Panda Nanny Keeper living at SDZ!!! Perhaps you could ask to put them in SDZ Panda Nanny Keeper Training, you would never want for anything and may even get kissed!!!
HUGS AND KISSES~~~~and maybe a little toushie patting????
Grammie: I am so glad to see that you are not truly “dropping out” but will be able to keep in touch. We all love your humor and insights. Keep in mind that sons are a little slow on the uptake when it comes to taking care of mom. You’d think that all the years we spent caring for them would be stored in their memory to be recalled as needed when the time comes to help out their mother, but alas, the memory must have some interesting gaps…
Hang in there and continue to improve in health. We all (especially the pandas) need you!
As I got really weaker he stepped up his care, anad I am sure he will take care of things for me. He found me a nice new matress that is helping with the pain, just not the strength, but I willl take a break from pain any time. Maybe strength will come back faster with the other stuff not bothering me. I dearly love him, and we do get along most of the time.
Ok its 10:30 cst and the cam is showing outside? kinda hard to tell, I see rocks..whats up..did someone 4get to switch it? ..missing the baby
Hello from Connecticut. First day back at work since Friday and the first thing I did was go to the Panda Cam. I’m still without power and cable and internet at home and believe me, I was having panda withdrawals. I still haven’t seen cubbie yet, but I’m getting caught up with all the blogs and new videos from DoxieMom. Can’t thank you enough for them. All in all, we were a lot luckier than some dealing with Sandy. My thoughts are with those who lost loved ones, their homes and lets not forget all the animals, God Bless.
Moderator’s note: Yes, we all are sending good thoughts to those in Sandy’s path.
Janis, hope you get your power back soon. Good luck.
Tuesday around 2:45pm, Bai Yun wanted to nap with her cubbie, but he had other ideas. Repeatedly he tried to get out from under Bai Yun, and she’d pull him back.
2012-10-30 Cubbie’s Persistence Pays Off
http://youtu.be/JQOXYf1ATEY
Thank you for capturing these special moments.
Great video, DoxieMom. I love his persistence in getting free from Mama’s grasp! Wow! Did she try to hold him in place! Thanks for posting the video. All of us panda fans appreciate your labors of love…
Deaw Daddy,
Please tell Mommie that I’m a big boy now and I have to pwactiss my walking so I can pick up giwls as beautiful as Mommie. I can’t pwactiss at night because Mommie holds me tight with her cuddly big paws as she sleeps. I can pwactiss only during the day when Mommie naps so she doesn’t see that my pawsies are not listening to me yet and sometimes even make me do somersaults. Please tell her not to pull me under her for naps when I’m explowing the den’s exit awea. Help! Thank you!
Yours twuly,
Chubby Cubbie
Looking at other zoos, especially n China, those that are available, I noticed somthing. Especially in China. The patrons are noisy. They speakmto the bears, call, them by name, bring them presents of food and hang treats and have fun. One Chinese lady even sings songs tomthem. The activity ofmthe patrons seems to energise the bears and they have fun time too. Run around, and generally behave like they are hvingfun. In America, here at SDZ there is no noise but parents shusing their children and whining and crying childen. No greetings forthe bears,no applause when they do their fun things,no noise allowed??? Like it is dead. Fun and laughter excites the bears and they do fun things. Please can our bears get some fun from our visits. They love shoiwing off. They are happy bears, not introspective. Show some appreciation when they show off their tricks. If we laugh, they laugh too! Refer you toYang Yang of Atlanta. If the keepers laugh, he does his trick or activity again. and again and again. Has fun.Lets have some joy and give some to our bears too. Joy can be universal!
SDZoo does it best to keep their enviroment as it would be in the silent Bamboo Jungle. I am not sure if the bears react from disturbance or fun. FYI in China Tai Shan had to be moved to a new area to keep those patrons from shouting at him and throwing things at him. I have not been able to find anyone who visited China to tell me what was up, but only that he was moved BECAUSE of the guest disturbance. No one should treat a caged animal poorly when they do not have recorse, like making you behave in his home.
I think the pandas you see are “sub adults”, ages probably 1-4 or so. Yang Yang is a goofy, playful panda who delights his keepers. SDZ has decided they want to raise their pandas as if they were in wild, which means quiet
I’m always amazed at how close visitors can get to the SDZ pandas, but people seem very respectful. In Edinburgh, Yang Guang and Tian Tian are behind full length (and I think one-way) glass in their indoor and outdoor enclosures , so you see them behaving naturally. Visitors are asked to stay very quiet and flash photography is strictly banned to avoid disturbing and distressing them. The exhibit was closed when it was mating time. Even with these restrictions, it feels like a complete privilege to see these amazing creatures up close and hear about their behaviour and lifestyle from the knowledgeable keepers who accompany every group. I know I wouldn’t want to visit a zoo where animals were encouraged to perform for crowds.
I adore the chubby cubby, but have have fallen hard for papa Gao Gao. What a handsome chap he is!
You have great taste.
do the pandas eat the pumpkins or are they mainly decorative?
I think Gao Gao has a pumkin hope I am able to see what he does with it. I am at work
Is there an exam today for baby bear? He is really a happy little fellow and I think I called it right when I said I thought he was going to be a paw full for Bai. lol He really seems to love the outdoors doesn’t he?
Moderator…do you think there would be a chance of China letting SDZ keep Yunnie for breeding since Gao is getting old? About what age do the bears need to be for breeding? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if SDZ could keep an offspring of Bai and Gao for that purpose?
Moderator’s note: I don’t know what China’s plans for Yun Zi are, but I can teel you that females can breed at 4 to 5 years; males, 6 to 7 years.
It has also been brought to our attention that since Pan Pan is Bai’s daddy, and he fathered many, many, many cubs and cubbettes That the rest of Bai’s babies MIGHT not get a chance to breed. A great deal of diversity is needed to keep the breed strong. Most all of the of Pandas Pairs outside of China are related to Bai Yun in some way…….their offspring also would carry Pan Pans genes. Imagine an army of Pan Pans, 300 lbs. each~~~they could take over the world, if they could take long enough breaks from “Boo” eating.
Where did you get that idea? IS SDZ just having cubs for fun – I think not. China has a “stud book” so they know every panda mated. Granted China used Pan Pan more than they should but they have since wised up.
China has enough “wild born” pandas & their off spring to mate with our cubs.
But, will you ever find a female Giant Panda like Bai Yun who can teach her lover HOW to breed? It seems like this knowledge gene has disappeared from the species!
Happy Halloween to everyone from Hao Hao and me!
HH says “BOOOO”
BOO BOO to you two too.
Why are the bears bobbing for pumpkins instead of apples today????
Thank you moderator…I have learned so much from you. I hope SDZ tries to make a deal with China for you to keep Yun Zi. Happy Halloween BTW.
China named one of their panda cubs “Oreo”
What a cute name
That is rather interesting that we are trying to choose a Chinese name for this baby panda and the Chinese gave their baby panda an Anglo name.
Understand that many are very upset about calling a panda “Oreo”, an “unhealthy” snack. It’s considered advertising. But if a company is willing to shell out BIG BUCKS concessions can be made like when they agreed t to name ZA’s “Po” (the hero of the movie “Kung Fu Panda”)
Money counts
Rats! Why didn’t we get a shot at that one????
Love it!
In case you have never seen Yun Zi with a clean bottom I just photographed him leaning over the side of his Hammock, with his bottom toward the camera, my guess is Halloween 2012 he is dressed up as the Teflon Panda.
Llater Gaters, Yunior is setting a good example by hanging his head out of his hammock and taking a snooze.
Awww cubbie looks so cute all snuggled up with his paws over his eyes.
Here’s another video of cute Yun Zi playing with the box!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j41dvSZXScY
How adorable ~ Prince Fluffy Butt is still a playful little boy. Too darn cute.
re: the videos of Yun Zi and his cinnamon play date… I’m impressed with how many different ways Yun Zi plays with the box (in a pretty short amount of time). it appears creative. also in the video where Yun Zi is playing with his hammock, I don’t think I ever observed Yun Zi climbing backwards onto the hammock before. recently I’ve seen Yun Zi climb down the wide diameter tree trunk structure backwards. I don’t know if he regularly reverses his climbing direction but it’s interesting how he creates his own variety in a limited space and paths.
It’s 8am est, and I checked in on Mama and cubbie and they are fast asleep, side by side, with Mama’s paw over her little one. So cute. I wish I could reach in through the computer and just give them a little hug or two, or three…..
Then the kissing starts~~we are innocent, but the opportunities settled n our paths is just more than we can bear~~~I mean bare.

This morning I had the opportunity to see something I have never seen before.
I have not written for a while. Thank you to those who replied to my blog on 25/10.
10:45 am UK time (3:45 in San Diego)
Bai was eating bamboo while the little cub sat in front of her feet facing her. There was a massive stock of bamboo over them. Cubbie was trying to mimic Mummy Bai. He lifted his head up to try and BITE the leaves in the bamboo. This is the first time I have seen it. It is really amazing and exciting watching him biting the leaves. I quickly snapped the picture (thanks to Grammie who taught me how to click).
10:47 am
While mummy Bai was busy eating, Little Cubbie tried to escape and crawled towards the entrance. Bai quickly snatched him up and put him beneath her. Bai made sure the cub cannot escape this time. They then fell asleep.
Perhaps Little Cubbie is dreaming of BOOOOOO this time.
A big pile of bamboo blocked the entrance.
An Unforgettable and a Mesmerizing moment for me again.
It is now time to go out to feed Gao Xing and Bai Xing, the 2 lovely Swans.
Thank you for the mention Cyntia, but I am sure I was a minor participant. So glad you are enjoying the Snapshot feature….isn’t it the best??
7:20 am Looked in on Bai Yun and saw the most precious site, she was just sitting, and cubbie was between her legs sleeping sitting up, with his head resting against Bai’s tummy. OMG he looked like a stuffed little panda bear, completely motionless. They are a site to behold. My heart is so full of love for them. I’m guessing an exam is coming today?
I hope so. I’m going crazy waiting for an exam. I hope it’ll be a little bit longer.
looking at I think Yunior in his enclosuure and the camera angle is AWESOME. Makes it look like he is in his in his ancestral homeland eating boo very happily. Great camera work volunteers! Thank you!
Do they announce the name of the cub on the day he is 100 days old? If I remember right they had an announcement party for yunnie didn’t they?
Moderator’s note: We’ll have the cub’s naming ceremony on Nov. 13.
Yun Zi fans I have a double delight video for you. Halloween afternoon Yun Zi discovered a pumpkin in his hammock. What was his reaction? And this morning the camera zoomed in on Yun Zi while he was emptying his treat box
2012-11-01 Yun Zi, his Pumpkin and his Treat Box
http://youtu.be/PwWIFk7OHDE
Thanks again DoxiMom for such a great video. He is so cute.
Does Yun Zi get anything out of his treat box or does he just play with it? He didn’t seem to interested in the pumpkin. Did he finally eat it later?
since i live in N.J. i am just getting caught up on everything.I saw the picture of Yun Zi what a funny boy he is. the baby looks he has grown so much I can hardly believe it’s time for his name, whatever the name i’m sure he will live up to it.folks believe what you see about N.J. it looks like a war zone, boats are on the train tracks and all the boardwalks are gone and all the homes exploded in one town from natural gas. but all the pandas and others in the zoos along the coast are ok.
Moderator’s note: We are glad you’re well, barbara!
was cubbie examined today?
I’m new here, and adore watching the 4 pandas! I’m curious if they ever spend time together, or do they stay in separate areas? Can they see each other through the trees? Thanks for letting us into their world!
Moderator’s note: We do keep our pandas separate, except for Mom and cub, but Yun Zi can see Gao Gao if he wants to by climbing a tree and looking over. Gao Gao is much more interested in eating!
Thanks for the info! The pandas are so fun to watch
It’s so fun to see Yun Zi. I enjoy seeing him on his swing and he seems to be able to make his own fun.
