Zoo InternQuest is a seven-week career exploration program for San Diego County high school student juniors and seniors. Students have the unique opportunity to meet professionals working for the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and Institute for Conservation Research, learn about their jobs, and then blog about their experience online. Follow their adventures here!
My interest in animals and nature began at around the age of nine. My favorite show at the time was Planet Earth and I was really interested by how the different species would interact with one another. After becoming more and more interested with animals, my bookshelf had become filled with different books on animal behaviours and social interactions. Since then, I have been in love with all different species of animals, especially birds. I don’t know what it is about them that intrigues me most, whether it be their beauty or the calls that they can produce.
Some of my other interestes include working with computers, riding my bike, playing the guitar, listening to music, playing volleyball, going to the zoo, traveling, and camping. In school, my strongest subjects are biology and life science. I think that besides being at school, volleyball would have to be one of the greatest things to me. I have been playing for three years now and have made the varsity team as a sophomore. Traveling has also heightened my interests in wildlife, whether I was in Hawaii or Mexico, I always saw amazing creatures wherever I went. I also enjoy visiting rescue groups and help contributing to their causes.
In the future I’m hoping to go to a four year college and major in biology. In that pathway, I wish to have a career in teaching or working at a zoo, and educating others about my passions. It would be my dream if I could get a hands-on job in the field, helping the animals I care about.
I’m hoping that this program has a lot to teach me. I can’t wait to learn more about conservation and animals, what the presentors have to say, and the great experience of getting to talk with them. I’m really looking forward for my adventure ahead and I can’t wait to start!
