We made an upgrade to Panda Cam on Thursday afternoon, not realizing it might affect those who view the cam with the browser Internet Explorer. The issue has since been fixed. Thank you all for your patience!
We are now closing this blog’s comment section. (It’s no fun talking about geeky computer stuff!) Be sure to send your panda comments/questions to the previous blog, Panda Cub: Exam 6. Thank you!
Trouble Viewing Panda Cam?
– September 27, 2012Posted in: Animals and Plants, Pandas

I seem to be ok now. but get half a screen
Thank Yu ~~~I will try that just as soon as Ifigure ut what that all means. I will turn down the sound and go to a multii cam site….could not listen to Mei right now….LOve Grammmie
I was wondering what was up with pandacam when I got on the page and saw a white rectangle screen on the page! I do have an updated Adobe Flash that was downloaded earlier this month because I get update notices from Adobe Acrobat once a month. I do hope that the pandacam will back up, running, and online sometime today. I’ll check back on that later on. It’s 3:30am EDT, and I’m headed for bed!!

Thank you! I switched from Internet Explorer to Google Chrome and it works fine. Also can see it on my Ipad now.
From all of us who are computer illiterate, HUH????
oh god withdrawel symptoms
I followed all the instructions. It still doesn’t work.
Explorer sucks.
Is working now
I never had too much of a problem, I want to say I just love these guys, but sometimes I worry about the little guy, I know I should’nt, mum seems so rough with him at times. But thank you so much for the happiness I feel when I watch them sleeping ever so sweely!!!
I bet you are new to Panda Cub watching. I felt much the same way when I observed Yun Zi from the day of his birth. Many here go all the way back to the first cubette Hau Mei. I understand Bai was a very nervous mother the first itme and has only improved with age. I might be projecting my feelings in this, but it seems to me that Bai is just more loving and sweet this time around. She did have a full year plus off between cubs this time, perhaps she needed the rest. I feel like by the second half of denning time on she regards the cubs and cubettes as her own personal black and whilte furry toys. Wait until she starts her juggling act with him….you will be amazed.
I do hope that when you are back in “biz” that panda cam will STILL be available on Internet Explorer.. We here had NO problem with the way things WERE..
Ray Hoare
Always the way… NEW and IMPROVED doesn’t always mean better..
PLEASE put the panda cam back on accessability for Internet Explorer..
Moderator’s note: That’s our goal!
In the meantime search near top of these comments, or bottom of prior ones for a multi cam site that still shows the den cam. If you are not up to seeing or hearing Mei just turn off your sound and shrink your page to see only what you want to. The site covers 4 USA cams, but other sites as well from the drop down menu at top left side. You will not have the snapshot feature to use, but somewhere on the site there are directions on how to capture our sweetie Chubbie Cubbie.
Panda Team: could somebody check and report at his next exam if he has a black dot on his tail like his big brother Yunior. Thank You…Love Grammmie
Grammie – I haven’t even been able to watch her. When she’s in the den, and I know that she’s all by herself, it just breaks my heart.
:(:(:( Many, many tears for her and the National Zoo!!!
Hi Grammie, I need you help, as I cannot find the multi cam and would really like to have the option of sound. Thanks very much. Lovin’ this Mama and baby!
Moderator’s note: The multicam’s feed of our Panda Cam does not have sound, either.
Thanks for the update, I was having panda cubbie withdrawal!!
Thanks for the up date. My screen is white. I will have to wait until you have it fixed. I am not computer literate. Happy the Panda are ok.
It’s upsetting that these changes were made and some of us have older computers that can’t handle upgrades to view. It was a pleasure seeing the little guy each day and now I and maybe others will have to do without. I understand upgrades in the world of advanced techology but some of us dont’ have the money or understand how to embark on upgrades we just want simple viewing options. I guess it will only be the Elephants going forward. ;(
Hi Diane. My computer is pretty old (like 2004) and I am able to view the panda cam using Firefox browser. I can’t advise on Internet Explorer browser since I haven’t used this in years. So if you still have problems with Internet Explorer, suggest you (or a techie friend) try downloading and installing Firefox browser with its associated plug-ins. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the FIX… Love yah…!!!!
Hurray! I can see “cuteness” this morning. Thank you!
Oh no! The changes do not allow me to watch the panda cam and I cannot download new software at work. I will miss checking in on the baby during the day! So sad!
thank you now able to watch Ba and baby again.. geez I missed them lol
Thanks for getting the Panda Cm fixed, I missed watching mother and cub
I have noticed that the camera light bothes Bai Yun sometimes. She looks directly at the source and frequently tries to cover the cub with bamboo branches. Maybeshe does deserve some break time from constant viewing. I do love seeing her and the baby up close, but should we repsect sme privacy rights for her or not?
Moderator’s note: The den is equipped with infrared lighting, so although it looks well-lit to us via the Cam, it’s pitch black to Bai, the cub, and even the keepers! The times when Bai “looks up” may be because she’s heard a small sound as the camera adjusts focus. She’s a curious girl with great hearing. Hope this information puts your mind at ease.
Thats right~I bet she passed all of her tests when she participated in the hearing study. Is Gao doing well with his ears, and how about Yun Zi? The last I heard he was having a bit of trouble with extended concentration (transulation~he wanted to play) but that is because Pandas are born knowing how to play.
I never saw a mother who loved her baby soooooooooooooo much! I’m mezmerized. Thanks for letting us know it’s OK when she spins him around!
Boy Bear is the cutest little creature I ever saw! Thank you for sharing him!
Even the Atlanta Zoo has posted condolences to the DC Zoo – why can’t you guys????
Moderator’s note: We have been in contact with National Zoo since the sad event, both to offer condolences and offer support.
SDZ Global also posted condolences. Thank you!
Reply to Nancy – I thought I saw a message on SD zoo’s Facebook page to the National Zoo sending condolences, didn’t I? Who better to understand the grief than those wonderful people at a zoo that cares for the precious creatures? I also understood that SD zoo has assisted National Zoo in the past in their efforts to impregnate Mei.
Reply to Sherie -
I don’t go to the SD zoo’s Facebook page – just the cam here.
My bad (I guess.)
Nancy, I’m not exactly sure what you were expecting, but San Diego Zoo Global was one of the first to express their condolences on the blog that day. Their comment was posted under the very first post about the cub’s passing, and I saw it shortly after the news broke when I checked in here. As I mentioned in an earlier post, our dear moderator worked hard to keep up with all the posts that day, even though it was a Sunday. Thanks again, dear moderator!
for me, I can see cubbie ok (using chrome). he is lying on his tummy and maybe his mouth is a little open. he looks like a big smiling pillow.
I love the cam and have been following the bears for years…and I sure wish you would put in color cameraS, watching black and white bears on a black and white camera, hurts the eyes! COLOR WOULD BE COOL, AND IF WE ALL HAVE TO CHIP IN FOR IT, LETS DO IT???!!!!
When Bai Yun and #6 leave the den and are outside, you will see them in color. Also the glimpses we are getting from time to time of Gao Gao and Yun Zi are in color.
Daylight or artificial light is needed for a camera to pick up color. Earlier post just a few up the line said despite the den looking well lit to us is it totally dark and the camera uses invisible infrared lighting to see Bai and her son.
Yay I can see the cubbie again !
Love this cam. Noticed that Bai Yun was staying out of the den for really long periods of times yesterday . Love her interaction with the little one. She is so loving with him.
I have Explorer at work and Chrome at home. Both are and were working fine. Thanks for letting us know though.
All fine now!!
I too had cub withdrawal!!
I was really worried when the cam went dark. The first thing that the zoo did in DC when the cub had trouble was to turn the cam off. I am so happy that all is well!
Thank You the Web Cam is working just fine now….Love Grammmie
This may be a stupid question but I was curious. You know how human babies get into a routine after a while (sleeping/eating/etc). Does/will our baby boy have a routine? I know he is subject to Mama’s whims, but is there a favorite time of day for him to be awake or interact with Bai? I know he’s already incredibly smart; so I trust he will be the most playful while we are all watching!
Can you update us on the status of Papa Gao’s dental problems written about in previous blogs? Do you still have to cut up his bamboo in smaller pieces? What about the biscuits? Do those have to be cut into smaller bites as well? In spite of his dental & digestive issues, does he still have a big appetite?
Reply from Suzanne Hall: Yes, we are still offering him a modified diet with smaller pieces of bamboo and specially prepared bread. The good news is that he loves the bread! His weight has been excellent in that he is heavier than he has been in years, indicating the diet is doing him good!
Could someone please tell me how to find the multi cam site with sound? I read a hint in this blog but still cannot find. Many thanks and lovin’ that baby!
Thank you for getting Panda Cam back up and running on Internet Explorer even though I am so addicted the cub watching I took your advice and downloaded Mozilla Firefox so I could get my cuteness fix today. So I now have a backup web browser just in case Panda Cam doesn’t work on IE again at any time in the future! Gotta watch my beloved Yun-Gaos!
Yeahhh, I get to watch from my iPad now and not the app, but either way is perfect as long as I get it
Thank you
Dear Moderator,
Thank you for assuring everyone last night that cubbie was fine. I have a feeling that you worked “late” to keep answering everyone’s concerns! My service provider had problems for days trying to help IE users access the live Olympic feed this summer. Glitches happen. An overnight fix was a great success! It is truly amazing that we can be present via technology at all! We appreciate you!
after watching Bai Yun’s leg positions for many hours, I can understand how someone got the idea for Kung Fu Panda. interestingly, it is her positions while she is sleeping that remind me the most of kung fu.
Still can’t get Panda Cam with Explorer!! I’m missing baby growing!!
LJ…I have an ipad and cannot view the cam for it, Do I need and app? I am not computer smart, the ipad was a gift. lol Thanks
Thank you for fixing the video. I can see it today.
My laptop is 8 yrs. old and I know nothing about computers so anything that changes always messes me up.
I have my own in house Guru to take care of things and teach me….but it is still all greek to me.
I am getting it on my iPad now. Yeaaaaa
He is such a good panda. Loves to sleep, very patient with Bai’s spinning cubby tubby, and so adorable. It fills my heart with joy to see him and sorrow for Mei Xiang to have lost her cub, especially when you think of how long they are together before weaning. Does anyone know how she is doing? Also, is our cub’s eyes opened enough now to see Bai? It must be an amazing first moment/bond between them!
Thank you for fixing the Panda Cam feed so quickly. I hope you get paid overtime for all the hours you spend moderating our endless questions and comments.
Thank you Mr/Ms Moderator, you are truly appreciated.
When I saw that the camera was out and looked at the instructions I was devastated. Being someone who is technically challenged when I read about cache and flash I knew that was the end of my viewing days because I haven’t a clue of what they were talking about. Fortunately the zoo got it up running.
10pm – do you were the cubbie is
Cubbie alone for hours and now den is empty- late dinner or checked in a hotel
At 7:15 Pacific~or Yunior time~No Bamboo does not move by itself…either Chubbers got buried in it or he is channelling older siblings Su, ZZ and Yun Zi and has taken up redecorating. Every time he moves so does the bamboo leaves, it must be just heavy enough to make it hard to move, or he is wiggling in his sleep.
I love Bai she is so cute playing with the cub. The other night I couldn’t sleep turned it on and it looked like she was giving her son raspberries on his tummy and looked like he was laughing saying “No mom stop it you are tickling me!”
When a panda cub passes away after being born could it be that something was wrong with the egg or sperm from the male? Just curious if this would also cause development issues. It seems we always look at the female.
