Today our little panda boy had his sixth exam. This was especially exciting for me, as it was MY first panda cub exam. Our chubby cubbie weighed in at 5.8 pounds (2.64 kilograms)—almost a pound more than last week. It is amazing how quickly this little guy is growing!
Our little buddy was a teeny bit fussy at the beginning of the exam, but a few chin scratches later he was sleeping like a baby. Baby panda boy received his first vaccination today as well. He was a super star and didn’t make a sound during the injection. What a brave little man he is!
Holding the cub for the first time was a truly amazing experience for me- he is so fluffy and strong! Although he may look helpless and fragile in the den, let me assure you that this baby panda is a little tank. Mom and baby are bonding more and more every day. Mom Bai Yun plays with her little baby, spinning him around and carrying him out to her bedroom on a regular basis now. Although this play can look rough at times, this is perfectly normal for a panda mom and baby. Our little guy is strong, and Bai Yun is an experienced mother who has successfully raised five cubs already. Soon enough our little guy will be up and running around. In fact, we have seen him practicing his crawling skills recently!
I can’t wait to see our little star out on exhibit this winter.
Elizabeth Simmons is a keeper at the San Diego Zoo.
More images can be found in our Panda Gallery.

Is there a video of the exam?
Moderator’s note: As noted above, it will be posted when it becomes available.
I enjoyed watching this baby growing he growing so fast.He hates beeing on his back so funny. He has good Mom she loves holding him and kiss him.
Could you please post the video of Exam 6 on youtube instead of the other video player embedded into this post? Looks like most of the zoo videos using this embedded player are not functioning properly since 2011.
Thank you!
(p.s. just want to see this cute little guy in color!)
Moderator’s note: Check out the San Diego Zoo YouTube channel!
Someone needs to go check on the panda cub! She was moving bamboo around and he got thrown against the wall. He has not been moving and the mama panda has been standing up to the camera and waiving bamboo around in distress. He may just be stunned but I am worried he is very injured. She has been moving him around alot and still nothing coming from him. I tried calling the Zoo but it is closed and no reply to the email I sent
Moderator’s note: Please don’t worry about the cub. His keepers are just on the other side of the wall and can hear and see (via monitors) all that goes on with the cub. They would immediately step in to help if they thought the cub was in distress. The cub is in good hands and paws.
It is really awesome to have the opportunity to watch this little miracle of nature on live cam. I’m using this as an educational experience with my daughter. What I would appreciate even more is if you could add some comments in your blog section illustrating us about why some things happen the way they do, like for example the behavior shown by the pandas yesterday. We were wondering about all that movement there. Baby panda taken in and out the den and Bai Yun getting all that bamboo inside the den.
I have watched this cub since its birthday and I am loving every minute of it. I even submitted a name.
What I would like to know is where Bai Yun goes at night and is someone still there at night to watch over the little boy like there was in the beginning of his life?
Thank You for your answer in advance
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun goes just steps away from the the den into her bedroom area. She can react to the cub’s call at a moment’s notice. There is no 24-hour watch at this stage, but we do have staff that check in with the pandas periodically throughout the night.
can i ask if the webcam is slightly out of focus , or is it my eyes lol
Moderator’s note: We’ll check it out.
Just wondered why I not cannot see the panda cub with the panda cam. Miss being able to see him.
Every time I have checked the pandacam today, I am seeing an outside cage but cannot tell which Panda I am viewing.
It seemed like with Yn Zi in the past there was a number posted on the screen and you could check the cross reference list.
I am sure this is not Bai Yun.
Moderator’s note: Our new HD camera system does not have numbers available to indicate which panda you are seeing, something we are working to correct. As of 3:36 p.m., Gao Gao is on the cam, munching away!
As a multi-year addict of the San Diego, Atlanta and National Zoo panda cams and visitor to the zoos to see them up close, it is uplifting to watch the little (for a while anyway) panda boy’s growth and progress and celebrate another cub success for the San Diego Zoo and for pandas as a species. In some way it lessens the pain of the loss of the National Zoo panda cub felt by their staff, by those of us who adore pandas, by the panda zoological community, and especially by Mei Xiang. We pray that she will soon return to her normal happy behaviors and that even in her death her female panda cub will provide us information to help insure the thriving survival of this precious animal.
Could you possibly tell us about how many names you received for naming the cub?
Moderator’s note: About 7,500! It will take several days for the team to whittle the suggestions down. Thanks to all of you who participated!
I just wanna hug him and rub his tummy and give him a tap on the bum bum!
So glad all our SDZ cubs are strong and they grow up to be wonderful pandas. So sorry about the NZ’s loss of their panda cub….sigh.
Dear Panda caregivers: I’ve watched this new little guy from the very beginning. I had also watched Yun Zi as a baby through the present. I continue to be amazed by Bai Yun and her loving behavior with her cubs–I can’t tell you how this has touched me. She almost seems human toward these little newbies. No human Mother could be more gentle and attentive. Thank you for brightening up my days with your very special charges. Linny Boo
I feel the same as you do. I watched Yunnie grow up too. Bai Yun is an amazing Mother.
What does the first vaccination protect cubby from?
Moderator’s note: Distemper.
Elizabeth I’m so envious of you being able to handle this darling chubby cub. Love seeing the videos of his exams. He truly does look so mellow and like a happy little babe.
Thanks to all of you for keeping us updated on Mom and Cub.
Is the panda at the Washington D.C zoo , Mei Xiang related to Bai and her cub?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun and Tian Tian are related.
No 6: Mama, I did well today, didn’t I?
BY: Yes, my dear, Mama is so proud of you.
No 6: Thank you Mama for warning me about the sharpy. It was not scary after all. Hee Hee, your teefies and claws are stronger.
BY: No ouchie?
No 6: No ouchy. Ge Ge screamed! I saw his video.
BY: Ge Ge is different from you.
No 6: I am tuff.
BY: You are? Mister, let’s see how tough you are. Come here.
No 6: Yipeee, another spin cycle?
BY: With a special tist and toss sequence for variety.
No 6: Bwing it on, I wuv dat. Hee Hee Hee, Mama, you tickle.
BY: Wuv you.
No 6: Wuv you lots.
Is there an ETA on when he’ll be outside for us to see? Will he be our little Christmas elf?
Moderator’s note: December or January, nothing definite yet.
I posted a ? in the wrong exam thread so I’ll ask here -
Bai’s coat is so shiny and clean. Do you give her a supplement to help or hose her off occasionally? How she can stay so pretty while raising a cub is beyond me! She’s amazing and beautiful and has a beautiful baby.
Moderator’s note: Keepers do not hose her off. Bai Yun has long had the nickname of “Teflon bear,” because she always looks so white and clean.
How old will the baby need to be , before he go on exhibit for the people to see I want to be there the first day .. LOL Bill
Moderator’s note: Five to six months old.
I thought I saw tooth buds in one of the photos from today’s exam!
Such a welcome sight to see cubbie so chubbie and relaxed. The miracle of his health and development is even more meaningful when we see how careful Mei and the staff were and still, their sweet cubbie did not survive.
I am so thankful to have this beautiful, healthy boy to continue watching as I mourn the loss of the precious cub at the Smithsonian. Bless you all for the opportunities you provide the world to learn about, love, and completely and utterly cherish these very special creatures. My prayers are also with Mei Xiang as I watch her continue to cuddle her Kong toy; my heart truly breaks…then soars with love as I watch this special little boy.
I was in the kitchen just a moment ago and my dad said something about a baby panda cub passing away. I immediately assumed he was talking about this little guy here since he knows I watch the Panda Cams often. My heart literally skipped a beat and I ran to my computer to see if this was true. Thankfully it was not and he his still with us!
I am sad to know another little panda has lost it’s life though. A sad day…I have yet to look up more info on that panda cub since I am still so sad to hear of it whether or not it was this one…
May this cub live to a full and happy life and all the young ones who’ve passed (and old) will never be forgotten. There is a panda heaven isn’t there?
I am so fascinated with little goy. I look foward to seeing him each day. He has stolen my heart.
And mine too!
He is my little break in a stressful day…..to relax and watch him grow
You guys scared the living snot out of me earlier today when the Panda Cam suddenly focused on Yunni’s yard! I was so afraid lightning had struck twice and now something had happened to Gao Junior. Thank GOD it was his weekly exam! Sorry, but I’m overly sensitive right now after the tragedy of Mei Xiang’s little girl. I know he’s a strong, healthy little boy, but still, your mind can conjure all sorts of horrible scenarios when the exam happens two days early. But I understand, the SDZ vets and nannykeepers just had to get their arms around their precious widdle man a little early and let him know how wonderful he is, and how very grateful we all are that he’s here! He’s a special, special baby; a true miracle!
It’s good to know that the cub is strong. As some others have said, at first I was nervous about the way Bai Yun handled her cub, moving it this way and that, nibbling at it, and recently it seems that the little one is sometimes annoyed by it. Then I started thinking about diaper changes and dressing a human child especially a toddler; raise this arm, lift the child up the face scrunches as we wash the face and the child always wanting to be done and get away. That’s what I see with Bai Yun and her cub! I can tell she loves being a mom!
I’ve been wondering, do pandas sleep in a nest if they don’t have a cub or do they just make a nest when the mom gets pregnant? Was Bai Yun’s nest there from when she had her last cub or did she make it new for the new cub? Thanks
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun has used the same artificial den for each of her cubs, but of course she redecorates it each time.
I was worried when the Mom and Baby were both gone from the den. Thank you for update that Mom takes him out to her room now. We really enjoy this page, very educational as well.
I have been amazed the last several weeks at how calm this cub is. Even now the keepers are commenting on his manner.
All he does is sleep unless Bai starts pushing him around.
I wonder who was the most rambucious cub out of the 6? I remember Yun Zi
was pretty active and vocal compared to this boy.
I’ll make a guess that Zhen Zhen was the most active, although I didn’t see the first three cubs. She was nicknamed “Zoom Zoom” from just about the time she could move around!
Any other opinions out there?
Elizabeth: Thanks for the lovely update, and may I say that share your sentiments — cannot wait to see our little guy out on exhibit this winter. I remember clearly Yun Zi’s debut — most adorable thing ever, and I am sure our new little guy will NOT disappoint!
It is so enlightening to see this beautiful boy; especially after the tragedy at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Thanks for sharing.
So glad to hear “little chubby cuibby” is in good health. He sure is packing on the pounds. All cubs seem to have walking while keeping their belly off the ground
Mom seems happy with her new toy
She sure has been mauling him in recently and cubbie loves it
I can hardly wait until cubbie walks, he is so cute. What a chubbie cubbie he is. I know he is going to give his mommy a fun time.lol He is hard not to watch and I have other work to do…..now what? ha
He is so amazingly adorable! And I love his mellow attitude, perfect for laidback San Diego! He reminds me of one of my cats, just a goodnatured, calm boy…unruffled by the activity around him.
He is precious.
What a sweet heart, He is calm because is well taken care of and loved.
Mom moves him around a lot so this gentle time.

I recall a blog post made by the Panda Team a while ago that mentioned how each of Gao Gao’s cubs had webbed feet/toes. Do you know if Cub #6 has this trademark webbing on its feet?
Moderator’s note: He does not.
‘Come here, liddle one!’ commands Big Mama Bai in her no nonsense voice.
‘Why Mama?’
‘Because I want to do a cubby exam of my own. Sometime the hoomans are not as thorough as a Panda Mama cos only a Panda Mama can hold a wriggling cubby still.’
‘OH UH! Bye Mama, Ge Ge wants to take me go-karting……..OWWWWWW!, Mama leggo of my ears.’
‘Ears check. Two perfect and hopefully round ears which can hear Mama prefectly.’
‘Mama, what are you looking for?’
‘OK, little tail and hind feetsies are OK.’
‘Mama, why am I upside down?’
‘Good sense of direction. Hmmm, now what if I….’
‘MAMA! I am clean, I wiped after I did No 2 like you showed me. Mama, you know the aunties and unkas can see us on the panda cam right?’
‘Hee Hee Hee, of course I know. That is why I want to reassure all of those who love us that you are fine.’
‘OK. Can I say something? AUNTIES AND UNKAS, I am fine and I am CLEAN, VERY CLEAN. Soon I will be able to climb and run, hee hee hee. Beware Mommy Monster, the revenge of the chubby cubby!’
‘Mama is a bit deaf. What did my chubby cubby just say? Oh, time for a spin cycle? OK here goes!’
‘Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! Oooooooh, that tickles. Ohhhhhhhh, I wike that.’
Thank you, Yun Zi, for telling us the “Inaside Scoop” about the Panda Den. It is lovely to get the Panda point of view~espeially one as handsome as you. The adventures for you and Baby Brudder to come have my ears perked and my eyes hungry to read what comes next. Tell your Mama Hello from the Aunties and Unkas who watch the Den Cam Channel as much as we can. We who cannot visit the Zoo in person have you close to our hearts always….Love grammmie
Dearest Grammmie,
We luv you lots too and all the unkas and aunties who are loving us and looking after our interests. Mama is busy with CC6 (Chubby Cubby No 6), my cutle liddle brudder and she appreciates all the love you are sending her. Papa and I are spending lots of time together bonding. He is so cool and I want to learn all his courtship techniques.
Panda Hugs and Love,
Yunior
Ahhh, the baby panda is just SO cute in the blue blanket!! Now that he is starting to crawl around a bit, I was curious when he’ll start having toys to play with?
Moderator’s note: Our panda cubs attempt to play with objects at five to six months.
In the Den he plays with pieces fo Bamboo~mostly leaves at first, and any part of Mama he can get inside his mouth or between his paws. That is why you will see him teething on her ears and grabbing her snout between two paws.
If ever you might doubt the love between Bai and her cubs catch her some time when she comes back to a sleeping baby when she knows it is time to feed, I watched her gently wake him, cradle him to her chest, then rock him as he nursed. It was just the most beautiful gentle thing to see. Just keep watching, you will see it too…love grammmie
Thanks Grammmie for the vivid description. I am having a lot fun watching Bai and Chubby, but the moment you description is too beautiful to miss.
i been watching the mother panda and her newborn cub and i noticed that she is breathing kinda rapid i dont know if thats normal for her ? but she was breathing rapidly and had her mouth open when she was laying next to the baby i just wanna know if thats normal behavior for her got me a little worried.
Moderator’s note: Very normal.
I saw that also and was worried! Thank you for asking about it.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I have watched all 5 of the previous babies and I never get over what a touching miracle it all is. Bai Yun is such an amazing Mom!! As others have said, we are all so deeply saddened by the cub death in DC and are even more grateful than ever for our little miracle!!
Hi from Western Australia, I stumbled across your website by accident whilst searching for Polar Bears about 7 weeks ago and you can’t imagine how excited I was to find your webcams. OMG I am absolutely in love with your Panda webcam and I basically have it running on my laptop all day so I can see what your gorgeous little cub is up to. It has been such an amazing journey watching him grow and something I would never been able to experience had this webcam not been available. I even take photos on my phone so I can keep them. So thank you so very very much for this wonderful experience… I look forward to many more hours watching this beautiful family. kind regard Debbie x x
Moderator’s note: Welcome, Debbie. Be sure to look in our our Polar Cam as well to watch our three beautiful bears.
And use the snapshot feature t get some personal photos too!!!!!!!!
He is so cute. I came to visit in April and only seen Gao Gao and the back of Bai Yun. I am now coming back to see the pandas in June and I just hope I will see this cub as I missed Yun Zi when he was small. Just can’t wait as I watch the panda cams everyday. You all do a good job in looking after the panda keep up the good work.
Thank you Eiizabeth for the update on Bai Yun and her little boy. He is getting big and strong.
I feel so bad for the loss of Mei Xiang little baby.
Wow, our little cub is growing fast. It’s a daily routine to check on him several times. Love that little leg kick of his. I’ve been watching his attempts at crawling. Makes me smile every time.
The loss of the baby girl at the National Zoo made me so sad. Mei Xiang’s tragedy has reminded me how truly special and amazing our little boy is.
Love the new cubbie. Does he have Gao Gao’s webbed toes?
Moderator’s note: No.
Wow, he’s gained a whole pound in less than a week! What a sweet boy. This weekend I saw it looked like he crawled! I can’t wait for him to be a little bit more active and getting around. Although I don’t want him to grow up too fast.
He has to be fast….look at the 5 who came before him.
Do you think Bai Yun will have another cubbie? When is a Panda Mommy considered too old to have babies?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun is currently the second-oldest panda to give that we know of.
Can’t believe how quickly the little guy is growing.
Cubby’s Revenge
‘Hmm, lady’s bum is nice and wide. Lovely textured fur with extra bounce!’ declares CC6 as he grabs two pawsful of Mama’s tushy.
‘Hey, what’s up?’ growls Mama Bai as she turns and tries to see what her cubby is up to.
‘Ma’am, this is the Cubby’s Mama Exam. We do it to certify if you are Mummy material. Now the paws please.’
Bai Yun humours him and places her paw in his.
‘Nice furry paws, great for cradling a cubby’s head. Nice claw manicure, Ma’am. Bamboo Glitter Green shade is so you.’
‘Thank you,’ coos Bai as she flutters her eyelashes.
‘Now to check the Mumnmy Mewk Bar. Hmm, all taps are working fine. This one is a little full so time for a quick drink…..Ma’am, you might want to work on the flavours. Strawbewwy, chooclate and maybe cookies and cream will be super kewl.’
‘Now young man, you need a bath!’
‘Nope you don’t. By the way, nice smile, lovely snout and those perfectly round ears are divine. Ma’am you are bootiful. I think you are a Super Grade A+++ Mummy Panda Bear.’
‘Only 3+++???’
‘Well I deducted one for the too many baths.’
‘Since it is deducted what have I got to lose. Come here, CC6!’
‘HEWP, MAMA BATHING MONSTER LOOSE! HEWP!
‘Let’s see if your paws are clean!’
‘Mama that tickles, hee hee hee!’
‘Hee Hee, you are soooo cute, my cubby!!’
ROFLOL!!!! This was so funny, Yun Zi! I have often thought as I watched your Mama and your little brudder that he must be the cleanest panda cub on the planet. Mama sure gives him a thorough working over almost every time I check on them… Can’t wait until he and your Mama are back out on exhibit. Some of my fondest memories are time when I watched you and your Mama playing together… sigh…
Love to you and the whole family! Auntie Deborah from Northern California
Thank you for loving us Auntie Deborah. My family is getting big isn’t it. Maybe my big brudder will make me an uncle soon but ZZ is not ready to settle down. At the moment no guy panda can catch her to woo her. Hee Hee. Have a great weekend.
YZ
Bai has to be the funniest. I was just watching this morning and it looked like a snow blizzard in the den. She was throwing around all the bamboo. It was soo funny.
What is a the feel of the panda cub’s fur? Is it soft, or is it like an adult panda: coarse, bristly and oily?
It’s a good question, and I wish I could answer it a little better, but so far I have only touched the cub with gloves on! We always wear gloves for the baby’s protection. The fur feels very fluffy and thick through the gloves. I imagine that it is course like adult panda fur, but perhaps a bit softer and less oily since he is still a baby.
I am willing to go with soft too. many young animals have oft fur that turns haaarsher or crisper as they become adults.
I held a 13 mth old panda named Ya Yun at Chengdu Panda Base in Oct 2011…she was big, soft n cuddly w coarse, slightly oily fur. Just like a big soft duvet. I remember tickling her under her chin, playing w her chubby feet n big ears. We had to wear plastic gloves n scrubs. Her keeper kept her occupied w a young bamboo shoot dipped in her favourite honey.
Iris~I bet there are thousands of us in complete awe and envy of you~but glad you got to have the experience too. Thank you for the information, now we can dream a little closer to the truth.
If anybody else wants to tell us about their “Touching the Fur” experiences, I for one, would love to hear about them..Love Grammmie
Hi Grammie, you can do a Google search, just type in Panda Ya Yun youtube and hit search. There a few youtubes posted of her. Such a darling. She was born Sept 10, 2010 so she is 2 yrs old now. She was the youngest of the 2010 cubs born at Chengdu also the smallest yet feisty, gets along w all her buddies n she loves swimming in the little pond..splash, splash, splash she goes.
Thank You Iris.
Conversation with Bai Yun #42
Cubbie #6: Mama.
Bai Yun: Yes, dear.
C: I really enjoyed yesterday’s paws with no claws experience.
B: Oh, that’s right. You had your 6th medical examination.
C: Yes, Mama. And I made friends…
B: Oh, the caretakers and medical staff are wonderful people.
C: And vernier caliper, tape measure, stethoscope, flashlight…
B: Oh, but these latter items were inanimate objects.
C: They were? But they moved.
B: Only when manipulated by the humans…
C: Oh?
B: So they are neither friendly nor unfriendly.
C: But I like to imagine them as friends anyhow.
B: Well, there’s no harm in that.
C: And sometimes I play masquerade.
B: Masquerade?
C: Like I assume the shape of caliper.
B: That’s right, one of your sleep positions.
C: And I do tape measure.
B: Yes, when I send you through your wash and spin cycles.
C: And then I met hypodermic needle…
B: Oh, your first distemper vaccination.
C: I couldn’t quite describe it.
B: Well, it was your first injection…
C: Now I’m thinking how do I make myself stiff and prickly…
B: Oh, but it’s time for milk bar anyway.
C: Oooh, yummy.
B: But we’ll wash and spin first.
C: Deal.
Adorable — as always!
Love it! Thanks, P Wong…
Loved it, as always, P. Wong! Your conversations are just the best!!
I must have missed this conversation! I can actually hear the sounds of their voices! Is that weird or what? Love love love… thank you so very much!
We are visiting San Diego and we saw GaoGao and Yuzi yesterday eating their lunch. It was amazing to see how the keepers make it exciting by putting enrichment foods and scents for them to seek and enjoy. Last time I saw YunZi he was up in a tree and now a beautiful full grown bear. It was an awesome experience.
My heart goes out to the National Zoo, still in shock.
Bai is just so in love with her little tank. Now that he’s getting older, she seems like she can’t get enough of him…it’s a wonderful sight to watch her and he is just so darn adorable:)
Liz I have been seeing that too. She seems to be such more attentive and
willing to have him with her in other rooms. I used to be up all night and saw some things others missed in the early morning hours. As soon as Yunior was asleep she was off for some time, andoften he cried fr long times before she came back for him. He was fine~just wanted mommy, but this cubbie seems like not too much bothers him and she is very attentive, but not nervous unless she can’t find him. Love grammmie
I like to watch Bai Yun cradle chubby child. I was surprised that one of the news stations in their report about the National Zoo cubbie’s death, needed to state that Mei Xiang did not roll over the cubbie (ruling out a possible cause of death). when watching Bai Yun at first, I always wondered how she could rest at all without rolling onto cubbie but it just seemed like she always had that 6th sense to be aware of where her baby was.
Wow… Matt Kinney is a cutie-pie!!
I am here since Mei Sheng..and have loved each and every cub as they were born and raised by their wonderful mom. I do love this little guy madly, perhaps even more, if possible, than the others as I realize he is probably Bai Yun’s last one. She is just so wonderful with him, as she was with the others, but maybe even a little more so to my eyes. I live way across the country in Vermont, yet feel so connected to the San Diego Zoo, and want to thank all of you for the opportunity to watch the cam and learn about these beautiful and very lovable creatures.
Thank you Elizabeth for the update on the cub’s 6th exam.
I am very happy to hear that the cub is doing well. He sure is a cute,
chunky little guy.
Love the new video! He is beautiful….such lovely thick clean fur and so fluffy! Big Happy Cloud would be an appropriate name for him!! I know when my pet cats had their vaccinations it made them sleepy and sometimes run a fever for a day or so. Does that happen to bears too? Or do we just not know, since the time passes so quickly before they are back on their feet again!?!
Panda Team responds: We don’t monitor the body temperatures post-vaccination.
Such beautiful big bears.
Hopefully I didn’t miss it in another thread but I was wondering about Bai Yuns health. Is she back to any kind of ‘normal’ routine? Not sure what normal is at this stage of rearing the little guy. I’m sure it’s the way she stretches in her den, but sometimes I can see her ribs and she seems thinner – an allusion of the camera is my guess.
Moderator’s note: She’s doing what she needs to do to keep herself healthy: eating, drinking, and getting some private “me” time. We are not worried about Bai Yun’s or cubbie’s health.
So very sorry to learn of the sad loss to Mei Xiang and the Smithsonian Zoo.
I was watching the webcam every day in hope of seeing and hearing her and I didn’t realize until I read these comments.
Little Gao is his fathers son, isn’t he the image of him this exam?.. That round face.
Perhaps next year Mei.
What a Cute little guy. So happy to hear he is doing well. Thanks for the updates on our Cub #6.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for the report. Cubbie is sure growing fast.
Now that the cub is getting bigger and furrier, how does the grooming affect Bai Yun’s digestive tract? Do her stools show noticeable changes?
That’s an interesting question.
Yes, Bai Yun’s stool changes after giving birth. Baby pandas need to be stimulated to defecate and urinate, just like other mammal babies. Mom does this by licking the baby and ingesting the feces. Additionally, mother pandas stay with their baby in the den, only leaving for short periods of time to drink water, eat a small amount of food, and urinate or defecate for the first couple of weeks. These factors do change the panda mom’s stool It is less solid and has a, well, certain smell to it.
As time goes by and Bai Yun starts eating more of her normal diet, which she is doing now, her stool quality gets back to normal. Although she does groom the baby’s fur regularly, I have not noticed an increase of fur in the stool.
How exciting for you Elizabeth and how exciting for us to follow this cubies progress in so much detail. Know I won’t see them, but so looking forward to our return visit to SDZ from Scotland UK in 10 days time. Hope both Yun Zi & Gao Gao are in their enclosures. Last time I saw YZ he was only 14 months old and still with Bai Yun. See you all very soon.
PS Looking forward to the lovely San Diego sunshine as well.
Moderator’s note: We look forward to your return visit, Lynn!
How long does baby actually nurse and when will he start eating bamboo? Will he be fed “baby food” once he is weaned? He looked so adorable in his 6th exam video and he was so brave getting his first vaccination! He looks so content and well taken care of. Thank you to all his caregiver’s for their extraordinary nurturing!
I hope I can get out to San Diego to see him when he makes his first big appearance!
Moderator’s note: Our past five cubs began “locomoting” at 14 to 15 weeks and started to mouth bamboo at 7 to 9 months.
Clearly all precautions must be made to prevent spread of contagious diseases and/or unwanted scent, but I don’t know how the examiners keep from nuzzling or kissing the baby. That would be such an exercise in restraint if I were holding that cutie little boy.
Will, at any point, there be a time when handlers are permitted to have direct skin to fur contact with the little one?
As much as we would love to nuzzle the little baby, it is our job to remain professional while performing these examinations. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!
In the future, when our little guy gets big enough, has had all his vaccinations, and is ready to go out into the world, we will be able to have more direct contact with him. The keepers will need to train little buddy to be a zoo bear, including shifting on and off exhibit. There may be times that keepers will need to go get the little guy out of a tree! As his caretakers, keepers will work to maintain a relationship with the baby panda so that he will continue to accept human contact. This will make medical exams easier in the future: our pandas are trained to accept medical procedures such as blood draws and ultrasounds.
So the answer to your question is yes, in the future we will have more contact with the panda minus the gowns and gloves; however, he is still a wild animal, so kissing and nuzzling are out.
So excited for you Elizabeth, and thank you for sharing your experience with the chubby cubbie. Just curious, do we have the “little tank’s” length and chest measurements for Exam 5 and 6?
Here’s some footage of Bai Yun grooming and playing with her little boy:

Moderator’s note: 16.7 inches (42.5 centimeters) long, chest girth 12.9 inches (33 centimeters).
I love your videos,Doxie! Thanks so much!
Thank you! At that weight and with those measurements, he truly is a compact “little tank” when you compare him to Yun Zi and Hua Mei when they were about cubbie #6′s weight
Love the videos, DoxieMom!! We can always count on you when we’ve missed something on pandacam. You just can’t imagine how much I appreciate all the time you take to do this. <3
When Bai Yun reaches the age of not being able to produce more cubs, will China ask to have her returned? I hope NOT. Everyone one of us including all of you at the zoo would be more than heart broken to see that happen and it would be of no advantage to China. Also…when she stops having cubs will China send you another bear for breeding purposes? What about Gao Gao, will he become non productive about the same time as Bai does? Thanks.
Moderator’s note: At this point, all we know is that our current loan agreement is good through 2013. We’ll most likely negotiate a new loan at that time.
He is so adorable and I can’t get enough of his cuteness!! I am trying to talk my family into going to the zoo in the spring on our family vacation instead of Hawaii so I can see the cub but my father keeps saying he doesn’t want to walk around that big zoo.. I’m thinking of ditching the parents and taking my own vacation with my and my son… My 7 yr old son now calls him “his baby boy” I think I might have passed my obsession on to my son
thank you for sharing the updates of this cute boy it always makes my week so much better.
Moderator’s note: Tell your father that we have an Express Bus that lets you get on and off at five different locations, including a stop near Panda Trek!
We need more advertising of such things. I am a local yocal and had no idea. Not that I am in any shapoe to make use of it now, but they are things nice to know to pass on to visitors and friends. Love grammmie

Hi Elizabeth,
I was wondering Bai Yun is 21 now understand that Panda’s give birth every two years after # 6 is on his own, will you breed Bai Yun again or is this her last cub? He is so precious!!! Thank You! CJ
Moderator’s note: We’ll just have to wait and see. Right now we’re just enjoying cubbie.
Bai Yun was just giving the little guy a thorough bath and, aside from a couple of paw twitches, he took it like a champ. I think he’s an extremely mellow boy, and his behavior during his weekly exams seems to back this up. I remember past cubs squirming quite a bit during Bai’s ministrations, although I’m sure No. 6 also has his moments, LOL. It saddens me to realize that the denning phase will soon come to an end, but it gladdens me, too, because it means the cub is thriving and will soon venture out into the world. Thanks for all of your hard work, SD Zoo staff.
I love how Gao Junior goes completely limp and just lets Bai get on with the spin cycle process of giving him his (multiple) daily baths. I guess Bai figures widdle boys are dirtier than widdle girls because I don’t remember her bathing her daughters Hua Mei, Su Lin, or Zhen Zhen as much as she does with her new baby boy and as she did when her sons Mei Sheng and Yun Zi were cubs.
I’m still hooked on this little guy. I must admit that when I see mom put his head in her mouth or twirl him around I hold my breath. The other day I noticed that the little guy was covered up with bamboo. He sat up and tried to get it off him to no avail. Mom was out of the den at the time. The camera panned away from the den and then when I tuned in again the bamboo was off him. Did some one go in and remove it?
Moderator’s note: Unless it was during his exam time, the only one who removes bamboo is Bai Yun.

Bai Yun’s little cub lifted his head up for the first time. It was 1:38 am UK time Tuesday morning. This is the moment I have been waiting for. I was so thrilled.
When I first watched him at 1:32 am, he was lying on his back with his little paws and legs wiggling. He tried many times to lift his head. Then he did it! He tumbled forward and then fell sound asleep on his left paw. It all happened so quickly. It was really amusing.
This is another of my unforgettable moments.
Bai Yun returned to the den at 1:47 am.
I always wanted to see the baby resting on her mummy’s tummy. I got to see it that night. It was a very touching moment. The baby was resting there till 2:03am and finally fell asleep on Bai’s right paw.
I am amazed by how Bai Yun cares for this cub.
I also noticed that Bai Yun looks up at the camera many time as if she knows that we are watching her.
Bai Yun is a really good mum.
So Glad you got to enjoy those moments. Are you able to use the snapshot feature to capture them in postcards to send or keep for yourself??? I love that feature, and usually keep a small window open with the den cam on so I will not miss anything. I have missed some lovely shots because I am so mesmerized I forget to click. If you need any help with the cam let somebodoy know they will help you with any information they have….love grammmie (I am Canadian of English and Scottish decent living right here in The Greater San Diego area.)
Grammie, do you know if there is a way to take snapshots or video using iPad? I am no techi here! Thanks!
I have never even been near an iPad (or iPaw) like our Pandas use. I am stretched to use my computer and a cell phone……and it was 1 1/2 years on my new phone before I could answer the phone, mostly I text, and now am on to a newer one…..but determined to have my daughter help me, son is too fast and impatient for me to get things set in my brain. Help from anybody out there will be really nice for Pat. I have no idea if you can use anything but our own cam on the computer~I know we cannot use the multicam for photos, as noted below.
Hey! Just watched the video of the cub’s 6th vet exam, and he was just as adorable and cute as ever. He was so calm and looked like he was about ready for another nap! And, he is so furry and fuzzy! That face of his will melt anybody’s heart out there!
Just got a peek at the cub by himself on the pandacam, and he was on his back! He wasn’t even really trying to roll over on his tummy so I thought that he was pretty comfy napping that way!
Back to pandacam!

Hi, Moderator! Got a question for you. I just got back on the pandacam and saw Bai walk into the den, picked up her little boy, and started nibbling on him all over his body from head to bottom, side to side, everywhere! Why does Bai nibble on her cub? I know that she does alot of cleaning on him with her big, wet tongue, but nibbling? First time I have seen that from Bai on this cub because I don’t remember seeing her do that with her other 5 kids. Any answers? Hope so!
Thanks!

Moderator’s note: She’s gobbling up all that cuteness.
Her version of play??
Thank you for turingn the camera towards the den door and our….wait a minute~they are gone again. Thanks for trying.
He is so mellow I wonder what he is going to be like when he gets out into the open air and there is so much to climb and play with. Remember Yun Zi wanted to stay in and sleep and he wasn’t half as mellow as this one.
Yes but during those times I hardly ever slept during evening or night hours, and I used to see him up playing either by himself, or playing at being Bai’s special “toy” that she could twirl and bat aound while laying on her back with 4 feet in the air….NOT to be confused with “spin cycle” we see now. He continued to sleep most of othe day even he out in the regular all day viewing area…..his best friend was his hammock….but during the night hours when the light or moon was just right I could see Bai and Yunior playing for hours during the night…..he needed the day sleep….Love Grammmie
Moderator: what does Bai do with the chubby cubby when she takes him to the bedroom?
Moderator’s note: She plops him down in the bedroom while she eats or does her business.
Got on the National Zoo website to check on Mei Xiang, and they have a link on the front page for people to go to a message page to send the panda keepers, staff, and vets their comments and condolences in the loss of Mei’s panda cub. They are extremely grateful for all of the positive messages that they have received over the last few days, and would like to hear from more of you. They are also thinking about a memorial for Mei’s cub, and there is a link on the front page for you to send in a donation for that. Saw Mei on the NZ pandacam, and she was in her den again tonite napping.
Going back to see Bai and her cub again. They were both out of the den a couple of minutes ago–out for that nighttime stroll again!

Chari: Thanks for the heads up on this. I am sure those at the National Zoo really need all the positive and sympathetic thoughts we can provide right now. What a difficult thing they have endured…
The cams are going to show us what is right, and what is not. I hope that the Garden room cam is as good during it’s close ups. help us to keep believing what we see. Keep up the good work, Please.
How are Bai Yun and Tian Tian related?
Moderator’s note: They share the same father, Pan Pan.
LOL When mom left babe at 6:29pm, kid was on his back by the entrance. One little move to the left and he did a double side roll. Landed on his left side and he continues his snooze
. Guess there’s a bit of a downward slant from the entrance. Yes, the floor of the den is slowly rising and it’s really padded now. You can see it when Bai does some seat bouncing.
This kids needs to be up more when Mom is not around to wake him up for an lick spin wash, teat exercise and push here and there.
Love it when he successfully gets from his back to his paws and then does a push forward with back paws.
Yesterday, I believe I observed Panda Cubbie sit up while Mommy was out of den. (approx 930pm EST, Tuesday, Sept. 26) Baby Cubbie was sleeping when his Mommy left… slept for awhile, then woke up and BIG time stretching combined with wiggling, more wiggling, then tons of wiggling, a brief rest and TA-DAH wiggled himself up to a sitting position. Panda Cubbie probably tired from all of his efforts slept almost immediately in a sitting position! After a bit Panda Cubbie’s head went down to the side and the he curled up into a ying yang furry snowball… Just like when Mommy would roll him up under her chin. Did any other Aunties see this?
I saw him do it also. I also saw him trying to crawl, or at least that’s what I think he was trying to do.
Grandma Ginny — oh you are right busy Cubby was trying to crawl… i totally forgot to mention that because i was like oh “boy” Panda Cubby is sitting up… i sat up, too as busy Cubby’s accomplishment caught my attention!
I hope someone posted a name for the contest that has the word mellow in it.
Little mellow boy for sure. Or at least calm, sleepy, relaxed, something to describe his laid back attitude so far.
He is not a zoom zoom kind of guy!
I was reading an article that said if a panda has twins the mother will only care for one of the cubs…is that because they eat bamboo and have limited strength after a cub is born? Does it happen often that they have twins and if they do, does the zoo have any success in raising the cub the mother doesn’t coose. Thanks.
Moderator’s note: You might find the post Pandas: Are Two better than One? helpful in answering your questions.
I read the article and it did answer my question. How interesting! Thank you for the information.
What weight is normal for a cub at his age?
Moderator’s note: Please click on the growth chart at the end of the above blog, where you’ll see how this cub compares to his five siblings.
I was wondering if the San Diego Zoo and its China counterparts who loan the pandas to the zoo have ever considered loaning the mother panda and cub when they are able to travel to another zoo for a week or two. It sure would be nice for us East Coast panda lovers to be able to see Bai Yun and her cutie cub at the Smithsonian National Zoo. I was going to go visit their baby girl panda in Washington, DC. I feel so sad for their panda mother and zoo staff.
The day before yesterday I went to my doctor’s appointment and got bad news that my medical problem is not getting better like I thought and it cannot be treated. After crying and being down in the dumps I went to your panda cam and watched the three videos about the baby cubbie’s 6th physical exam. And it brought the biggest smile to my face – not only because he is adorable, but because he is healthy and is growing bigger and stronger. Just like the other panda cam watchers have expressed on your blogs, I too have been worried about the baby cubbie – wanting to make sure he is happy and healthy after what happened with the loss of the baby girl cub at the Smithsonian National Zoo. Could someone on the panda team please tell Bai Yun and Gao Gao thank you for creating and raising such happy and healthy cubs that bring joy to so many people around the world? And thank the panda staff for the great care that they all provide to these wonderful bears.
Moderator’s note: Consider it done, Kristin!
This is such a wonderful uplifting blog. Everyone at the SDZ is so competent with all the animals and these pandas are just so awesome. There is a reason for ongoing success of any kind and it is the commitment and competency of those involved. It as been a joy to me following this little cub. Bai Yun is such a wonderful mother. And everyone is so healthy !!! Speaks to the care and focus they are given. Thank you.
Yes they do a marvelous job, but we must remember we have also been very blessed that we were assigned a breeding pair that happen to have the right hormone surges and capabilities of our pandas Bai and Gao. Other Zoos work just as hard and copmetently but do not have the “magic” we were endowed with. Someday there will be another Zoo somewhere that has the kind of expeience we have had here, and others will look on in wonder at how they do it. Hopefully there will someday be a way to tell which Pandas are best suited for natural breeding together so that all zoos can have our experiences….Love Grammmie
Hi, I work with the devolpementally disabled and we have been watching the panda cam. I just wanted to tell you how much we are enjoying it. My clients would like to know how long does it take for a panda to have a cub, I told them I would look it up for them but they don’t want me to leave the web cam, lol. They enjoy it that much. It’s the first thing they want me to do when they come in is to put on the web cam, thank you so much for the wonderful opportunity to watch and enjoy the chance to see #6 grow up.
Moderator’s note: According to our Giant Panda fact sheet, the average “pregnancy” is about 135 days, and documented range among zoo pandas is 100 to 180 days; however, true gestation of the fetus only takes about 50 days.
Lost me…”pregnancy” and true gestation? Is part of “pregnancy” included in time outside the womb? What is different from day 50 to day 135 or more?
Moderator’s note: The female may be carrying a fertile egg, but gestation starts when it implants in the uterine wall.
Amazing that the fertile egg is viable for such an extended time before implantation. This sounds like such a fragile species in even the best of worlds. It is miraculous that there are any and the SDZ is doing an amazing job of helping to save them.
I saw a blog about a Panda in China, in a captive breeding program, going nearly 300 days. It was sometime ago and I cannot recall exactly where or when it happened, but was documentable because it was in a captive breeding program. Perhaps somebody else who saw it, with a better memory than mine, can helop us out.
My students are “so into Baby Cubbie” each day we look in on the baby and send a post cards to my work address… if the children want I print several copies and they can cut one out to take home and we post one on the board.
The classroom has a variety of Panda story and science books and a basket of small plastic toy Pandas. (I bought at the San Diego Zoo gift shop) The basket of pandas also includes plastic leafy stems, brown shredded packing grass and small bowls to make “dens”.
I have had two wonderful opportunities to visit the San Diego Zoo and spent hours photographying the Pandas… the children enjoy seeing those pictures, too. A few pictures have been enlarge to show the Panda’s grip.
The children look forward to doing art projects… their favorite projects have been making a panda face using oval shapes dipped into paint, Pandas feeding on bamboo, anda coloring book page with a female zoo keeper holding a baby bear and if you ask the 3 ,4, and 5 years olds they immediately said “it’s Baby Cubbie”.
Earlier this week I found a great picture of a baby Panda (approx just a week old) and the children used shades of crayons to color “pink” skin.
The children enjoy placing the email postcards in order (youngest to oldest)and cutting strips of green paper and other materials to create bambo and we make a lot of it for our Panda stuff animals to eat
! I have followed all six Cubbies and the last one has been so special because I have been able to introduce the children to various topics and cultivate their respect for animals… not just the Pandas.
The children have even tried to mimic the twirls and spins that Baby Cubbie gets from his loving Mommy using soft animals!
Currently, a list with the food that Panda bears get to eat at the zoo and circled the foods that the children like hangs next to the board with our post cards.
I posted the web site for the parents to see Mommy and Baby Cubbie. (along with Mommy’s real name and the interesting tradition of when naming takes place)
The children and I call the cub “Baby Cubbie”, I asked the children what name they would select and here are the top five…
Soup- Because Baby Cubby lives in a bowl (den)
Two Colors- How True
Blackie White-y (first and last name… very formal)
Little Bear
Sleepy (not to be confused as one of the dwarfs)
Carla you have a wonderful class of future Zoo personel, animal conservationists and researchers on your hands. I love the “soup” referrence. I hope you will copy this and paste it in the newest blog, since it might get lost here, not everybody has the time or thinks to look back to see what comes after their posts. I would love to see the rest of the troops get to see what you have written here. Please give it lots of thought, the world should know.
HI, I’ve got a question for you: sometimes Bai Yun goes upside-down and throws dust and bamboo on herself. Do you konw why?
She may be cleaning the den, or if you see her rub herself with bamboo held in her paws, kind of like we wash under our arms, and on our chest and belly, she is then “Self Anointing”. She likes the smell of what she is in, under or rubbing, and wants to smell like it. I was very surprised when first seeing her and Yunior (my first experience with the Pandas) and catching her do this rubbing. If there were water and soap I would have said she was taking a shower. Love Grammmie
dear moderator, i do not understand what she is digging for . i saw baiyun digging den floor many times..
Moderator’s note: She is cleaning and freshening up her den.
More pictures and videos of Zhen Zhen at Emeishan in Leshan!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/86799970@N00/sets/72157631618998828/with/8022948579/
Hi Danielle,
Where is Emeishan? I ‘visited’ Zhen Zhen but couldn’t find where she is in the world. Thanks for the link!
Emeishan is in or close to city of Leshan. If you look at the map of the region, Chengdu, Ya’an (close to where Bifengxia is) and Leshan are making a triangle with Chengdu in the North, Ya’an in the West and Leshan in the East.
Lee was there, she might be able to give more details.
Thanks for sharing , these are great photos and videos of Zhen Zhen
Just watching Bai with chubby cubbie, he’s in her lap, feeding I think, and she’s holding him so tenderly. It’s awe-inspiring to see how much she cares for her boy. And beautiful.
The pure beauty of these animal’s behavior is nearly overwhelming at times. What joy this has brought to my life. THANK YOU zoo people :- )

How tall is the Panda Den? I saw this morning when BaiYun was standing on her hind feet and playing with the bamboo. See is such a good mom to the little cub.
It is roughly 5 feet from floor to the false ceiling.
Five feet… So does that mean Bai Yun can touch the false ceiling if she stands up and probes with her paws?
When in den with Yun Zi I saw her stand up fully, look at the cam then point snout up and open her mouth to make a growl, you could almost count her teeth and check her tonsils. Her teeth were in great shape.
Good Morning,
I just saw a (I think) a mouse running over the bedding and around the baby. It was some sort of small rodent. Will it hurt the baby?…. I was just afraid the little guy would get bitten.
What a wonderful little guy and what a competent mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Moderator’s note: There are no rodents in the den. Instead, bugs sometimes fly near the camera lens and appear much larger than they are.
I really think I saw a mouse a few times also!
Moderator’s note: Keepers assure me there are no mice in the den. They are bugs that scurry across the camera lens.
Henri~one of our “Creative Folks” let us know that is the “Fairy Moth” flying near the camera to keep and eye on the baby and Bai forus when we are not around. The story is in the comment section of the blog 3 or 4 or ? back. It is really cute, and will set your heart at rest.
Cam down on iPad, is it down everywhere?
Moderator’s note: We’re working on restoring it for iPad viewers.
Cancel note, cam is back! : )
For those fans who have found themselves needing a Yun Zi cuteness fix, I’ve put a video of Mr. Yun Zi on You Tube. We got to go to the SDZ on 9/25 and saw him
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUOCFfb0fpU&feature=youtu.be
There are not enough words to thank you for posting this!!! I have been missing him sooooooooooooo much.
Bobbie it is so very nice to see you again, I have missed your posts lately….Love grammmie
So amazing to think that Yunior was once as small as chubby cubbie, and that chubby will one day be muching bamboo in the hammock!
Lovely video, Bobbie. Thanks for “reintroducing” Yun Zi to us.
Yesterday around 4pm, the Panda Cam zoomed in on cubbie, and stayed there after Bai Yun came in and scooped him up to give him a bath. Great close ups ~ here’s the link:
2012-09-26 And they call this Cubbie Love
http://youtu.be/tfDKzQk-H2k
About when do cubs start eliminating on their own?
When mom is bathing the little one does he ‘squawk?”
What torture for you to have this little one so close and not to be able to pet and smooch it! You deserve a medal for your restraint.
I really enjoy the q & a – Thank you!
So well said~
What torture for you to have this little one so close and not to be able to pet and smooch it! You deserve a medal for your restraint.
~I am sure 99% of us, if not 100% would have that reastraint problem.
We start to find cub poop when the cub is around 7 to 12 months old.
This particular baby is a quiet little guy. We don’t hear a lot of vocalizations from him, but he does squawk on occasion.
I watch the panda cam of Mei Xiang in Washington DC once and a while, i’ts very hard for me to see her looking so sad, breaks my heart to see her cuddle with her toy she keeps with her. Do you know how long it takes for them to start acting normal again once they suffer a loss like she did?
For those of you that post the videos for us to watch……..THANK YOU. I know we all enjoy them. Yunnie was a beautiful little cub and he is a beautiful large bear now! What nice looking coat he has. He loves that hammock doesn’t he? lol Again….Thank you for posting for the rest of us:)
What a great post, Elizabeth. How wonderful that you were able to participate in the exam!
Bai has outdone herself this time in the exceptional moms category. She is having a ball with her newest cubbie. She certainly doesn’t appear to be slowing down. And is even getting in some “me” time since he is so healthy and can be left alone.
I like that she is sharing her “Out of the Den time” with him, rather than to get away from him, as I felt she was when Yunior was young. He was a very demanding baby~we had sound at that time, with the older less clear cams. He sometimes called for her for long periods of time, but I do not remember her taking him out so often as she is with Chubbie Cubbie this young. It makes the cuddle times we see seem much more loving, even though I am sure he loves all of her babies the same…..Love Grammmie
Grammmie–we’ve never had sound in the den. In the videos taken by the SDZ videographer and by visitors there is sound.
The baby’s gone from the den! Any chance we can see a cam of the bedroom?
Awwwwww, great close up of little Pandi. I can even see him breathing. So sweet.
Was anybody watching the panda cam around 9 pm local time on 9/26/12?
I put up a screen of the baby on the left side of the monitor and was doing something on the right screen. The baby was sleeping on his left side in the middle of the den all alone. Suddenly from the corner of my eye, I saw the baby flip 2 times in a split second, ended up near the wall, and went back to sleep on his left side again. I wish there was a video of it. It happened so quickly, that if the baby had not ended up near the wall, I would have assumed I was imagining it. It was so cute.
Yes, he was SO cute! I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it. He got stuck on his back for a bit but since it takes him a while to flip over on his side, he rolled himself into a ball as if trying to do a sit up. The den must be really padded and sloped though because the next thing I knew, he somersaulted over twice and landed on his side near the other wall of the den!
yes I saw him moving around too, it looked like he was rolling to the wall, pretty funny.
Isn’t it fun sharing these moments with others out there. Sometimes we can hardly believe ouor eyes when we are the only ones we know saw something like that. I had that kind of experience with somebody watching the other night, when he had his bottom in the midle of the den and with one prepetory rock foward and back fliped over his bottom slightly uphill. Had she not let me know I might have thought I dreamed it. Happy watching….love grammmie
The giant panda BaSi–named after the river in which she was rescued—is at 32 yrs old!–the oldest panda alive today. She’s overcome many health issues but is still going strong.
It has been about 15 to 20 minutes now that the Panda Cam has been off – its just a plain white screen. The mother bear came back into the den and was giving her cubbie a bath and then the camera went off. I am hoping that there is just a problem with the camera. The panda staff knows that the panda cam watchers get scared when the panda cam is not working, thinking that something might be wrong with the mother or baby cub. Please post a message on the blog letting us know what is going on so we know that mother and baby are okay. I called the zoo’s customer service center and the service representative said she would contact the panda team to express my concern. Thanks.
Moderator’s note: Panda Cam seems to be working fine for us, and all is well.
see note below about multi cam for help when ours does not work for us. Must be a break between Zoo and us……but not to Daiel’s
chubby laddie is reminding me of an egg with legs. hard to imagine those little legs supporting his head and body one day. but I can imagine him rolling around. he is adorable.
I love the egg with legs`so descriptive.
anyone having trouble getting the panda cam to load.. all I’m getting is a white image where the cam shows usually.. all the other cams are working fine
Moderator’s note: We’re not having any problems on our end, but we’ll look into it further, just in case.
At 7 :30 p. m. I had same problem~so I checked a multi~cam site
http://home.comcast.net/~dreidel/pandacams/index.html
saw “Chubbers” sleeping so know all is fine. I will check from time to time until white clears out.
We are the lowest cam on left, depending on your screen configuration and size of picture.
Moderator’s note: Thank you, Grammmie. I hope this helps those not able to view Panda Cam from our own site.
An off-topic question: Yun Zi was suppose to get a new tree. Just wondering what the status of that is. I thought I read in a past post it might be up around December? Thank you.
Moderator’s note: We won’t begin installing the tree until Bai Yun and cub are comfortable out in their exhibit. Right now we want things calm and quiet at Panda Trek.
Thank you moderator. I should have known that
I read a post from a moderator that said SDZ has Bai Yun until the end of 2013. that is only a little more than a year away, and cubbie won’t be old enough yet to be separated from Bai. What happens then? It really would be so sad to see Bai Yun have to leave her little cubbie behind, when he’s not ready to be by himself yet. he will be lost without her, since spending every minute with her since birth.
Moderator’s note: I doubt that China would ask us to separate a mother from her cub. You can rest assured that the San Diego Zoo is committed to keeping pandas and working to conserve them. The loan has already “expired” once, and we successfully negotiated a new one. We have no reason to believe that we won’t be successful again.
Very happy to hear that, and thank you to all the staff at SDZ for all the wonderful and compassionate work you do. I have fallen in love with Bai and cubbie. This is a first for me, and I can’t seem to stop watching.
Well said MOERATOR, well said!
thank you for the Moderator’s note… as i was wondering the same thing!
How long do baby pandas usually sleep in one day?
This cub is so precious. When Yun Zi was born I really thought he would be Bai’s last cub. It is such a joy to watch her with the new cubbie. Events at the National Zoo highlight how precious and important each and every panda cub born is. I feel privileged to watch Bai Yun with this little fellow and to have watched all of her cubs grow up on Panda cam. How blessed and all of the Panda keepers are!
how much does Yun Zi weigh now. It’s hard to believe I was watching him 3 years ago as small darling boy. He still is.
would have continued at Multi cam site, ut there is sound from DC and I don’t think it would be good for me to listen if Mei sounds mournful so I have been avoiding it except to check. Multicam site does not allow for photos, butI understand there is somewhere you can find out there how to use that site for photos…..but have not explored it because I love ours.

Hello Grammmie,
Thank You for the information about the photo feature that you mentioned on my post dated Posted September 26, 2012 at 3:45 PM. I guess you are living very near to the San Diego Zoo.
My family moved from Canada when I was 11 in 1957, to the Greater San Diego area. Except for two years as a young navy wife I have lived in the area ever since. I used to get to go to the Zoo a lot, under 16 were free before the “Hippie Days” and our boyfriends could better afford to take us there. It is a lovely Zoo, and when we were able to visit we were Zoo Members, meaning that we got to go to what is now called the Safari Park before it actually opened. It was wonderful.
In response to Donna’s question on the Panda Cam loading. We’re not getting the cam at all on our internet explorer. First on the laptop this afternoon, and now on the main computer this evening. Just blank space on both. We’re getting the other cams though. Getting the Panda Cam on Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Just blank on IE.
Moderator’s note: Good to know. Thank you. We’ll continue to work to resolve the problem.
Yes… dear SDZ…the panda cam is off… Its just a blank white page
in a box for me.. says “movie not loaded” when I right click
All other Live Cams are workable … Miss our Panda Cam please
check the cam.. Last I saw the cam this AM and the den
was empty assuming Bai Yun and son are outside
somewhere.

Moderator’s note: Our Cam provider has been contacted to correct the problem. It seems to be isolated, as I can see it fine from my home computer. I’m so sorry!
IF YOU ARE HAVING TROUBLE VIEWING PANDA CAM, PLEASE UPDATE YOUR BROWSER WITH THE NEWEST FLASH, CLEAR THE “COOKIES” AND YOUR CACHE, AND THEN CLOSE AND REOPEN THE WEB BROWSER.
OR
TRY VIEWING PANDA CAM ON THE FOLLOWING BROWSERS: MOZILLA FIREFOX OR GOOGLE CHROME.
Let them know:

all other cams on SD site work correctly which are FLASH as well
can see SD panda cam on Daniel’s Multiple USA Panda Cam Feeds just not on SD zoo site
Moderator’s note: Thank you, Jane. I’ve given our Cam provider this information and they are continuing to work on a solution. Now I’m off to bed! Thanks to all for letting us know about the problem.
Dear Moderator,
Please get plenty of rest and healthy food… we need you!! in the months to come as #6 gets cuter every day. You are doing a great job getting questions answered.
Moderator’s note: Thanks for looking out for me!
9:15 AM (MDT) I just saw Cubby take several steps going toward the entrance to the den, and then the camera focused on the ceiling. I was holding my breath as I watched, imagining him falling out. Is there a ‘step’ at the doorway between the den and the bedroom?
Yes there is a “step” and I was privileged to see Yunior fall out of it when he was still in the den. (There is plenty of Bamboo on the floor near the door to cushiona fall.) Bai had been gone for some time, and expected him to be in the den…..when she realized he was not she was in a panic, but found him sleeping in her bedroom a few minutes later. She spent more time with him for a while after that, and positioned herself across the doorway, lest he go adventuring again.
Thank you so much for easing my mind. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has become obsessed with Yunior’s safety and welfare.
The Yunior I spoke of was Yun Zi……he was the first to be called Yunior, and that is who we mean when most of us “old timers” use it. Chubbie Cubbie seems to be the moniker associated with baby 6.
Well, that clears things up! Thanks for the info.
Cam problem is fixed as I can now see Bai and baby.. thanks for correcting it for those of us who use IE.
Unfortunately for a few minutes, only got a view of the light above the den, Baby had managed to crawl out of the den on his own power. But I see he’s back in it now sleeping. That excursion must have tired him out.
After Bai took the jungle out, the little one was sure locomoting. He nearly escaped the den. I guess we will never know whether he was going after Mom to bring the jungle back. This is the most awake I’ve ever seen him as majority of the time he’s snoozing. It’s a shame the keeper did a tactile session with him as he’s back to sleeping.
I saw that today as well. My heart soared..a person would have thought I was watching my own baby take its first steps! Chubby Cubby looked like he was on his way out to find mom. Look out Bai Yun there are very busy days ahead!
I so love this mom and cub. They bring a joy and warmth into just an ordinary day. I have found myself crying while watching them. They are truly beautiful. Thank you to the zoo staff for doing such an excellent job of caring for them and for sharing this amazing time with all of us.
I have so been loving keeping up with this precious baby panda and his devoted mom! Thanks SO MUCH to SDZ staff for the excelllent caregiving and quality work toward panda preservation awareness.
For the user who wanted to know how to capture a still photo on the iPad – just press the ‘Home’ (front) button and the ‘On/Off’ button (the one on the end) at the same time. If the iPad sound is on, you’ll hear a ‘click’ like a camera shutter. Don’t press & hold – just push the two buttons simultaneously & let go.
The photo will appear in the Camera Roll accessed via the Photos icon on your iPad. You can use the Photo editing features to crop the image to provide max focus on cubbie’s cuteness!
Thank you….I saved those instructions in case I ever get an iPad.
The Pandas have their own kind~they use iPaws.
Ipaws …. how clever!
One of our creative writers came up with that one. My Son is constantly getting the idea he can read my mind, knowing what I am going to say, and he even has the topic wrong, but he announced today that for Christmas he wanted to get me a iPad type thing so I can get more comfy to email and blog. I have been thinking about those things for about a week and never mentioned it to him. I don’t mind him sneaking into my brain for things like that!

Panda Cam is now coming in on IE, at least on my computer!!!!
I’m glad others noticed the “roughness” mom uses with baby, and that it’s normal. I wasn’t worried but did wonder a bit. I, like others, always get pleasure when I see mom’s incredible loving ways. I am also convinced that she needs him. To Whoever coined “Yunior” for a temporary name, brilliant!
Yunior was coined for Chubbie Cubbie’s big Brother after he ws named at 100 days old as Yun Zi. One of the Blog handlers at the Zoo was the one who coined it. It is one of my favorite nicknames. While still younger I named him Prince Fluffy Butt…..but even with his baby brother’s huge bottom he keeps that title, I call Chubbers King Fluffy Butt, becasue he is so broad in the beam.
My 5 year old daughter and I are enjoying the love between mommy and baby boy each day. When she arrives home from Kindergarten each afternoon, she has to see how her little boy is doing.
We want to fly to California and see this adorable baby boy and how mommy and baby interact. I noticed that mom has taken him outside. Can he be seen by visitors to the zoo or is it a special, closed area for mommy and baby? My daughter is turning 6 on October 28th, and has asked for her birthday gift to be a trip to see this precious little one! Is there some sign we can look for to indicate that he is ready to be visited and on display for all to see?
FYI: It was interesting, a few days ago, that the Bai Yun looked right up into the camera, as if she knew that she was being watched
Moderator’s note: When the camera’s adjusting position or focus, it makes a very slight noise that Bai Yun can hear, so she looks up to see where the sound is coming from. As with its siblings over the past years, the cub won’t have access to the yard where the public can see it until December or January. The space that Bai Yun takes him “out” to right now is part of the bedroom complex and not open to the public.
Sometimes in the early morning hours 2 to 4 am Pac time I see Bai looking up at the cam, and there is nobody there to make adjustments to the camera. I did not see her look up near so much when she reared Yun Zi in the den. She did stand up, face the camera, and growled at it once…..again when there was nobody around and the camera was static. Maybe she knows us better than we think she does.
This little ham looks so cute! On Tuesday night I had a spinal tap…I had to think about something other than the needle in my spine..so I thought of this little guy and all the great pictures I have seen of him! Boy I had no idea I was having a spinal tap..and had been poked 4 times! Bai is so wonderful…and this guy is a real rolly polly! Thanks to the staff for all you do for all the animals!
Jodi~if ever one of t he Pandas needs a spinal tap we will have them think of you, so they can get past the hurt, or ignore it…Love grammmie
Where is the pandas? They have been gone for hrs are they okay?
On friday at about 9:30 pm I was watching the panda cam and there is no baby panda or momma, where did the baby go? Does he go outside the den now?
i could be mistaken, but i think in the “Hello world” picture Baby Cubbie looks like he was sending me a kiss or maybe the kiss was intended for all!
Where does momma and son go at night? I realize Bai is taking him out to her garden-room/bedroom, but how does she see in the dark? And what are they doing for such a long time? I can only assume sleeping or eating. It’s 10:00pm, dark, and they’ve been gone for quite sometime now.
Knock, knock!! Anybody home?? Got on the pandacam to see if the cam was back online, and it was! It was showing the den with no one at home at 1 am EDT! No Bai, no cub!! They’ve gone outside again! Anyway, I’m glad that the IT guys and webmaster were able to get the cam back for all of us! I’ll check it later on. I have Internet Explorer with Adobe flash on my computer, so I just waited for the computer geeks to get their end of it fixed! Thanks, you guys! Now, I can watch little cubbie again whenever he’s in that den!

Friday night @ 11 p.m. Looks like Bai Yun and cubbie are on a camping trip tonight as the den is empty! I am sure the little guy is enjoying the starry starry night.
Hi Panda Cubbie… i missed seeing you last night as your Panda “Nanny” Cam was “off-line” (a silly word) and means sadness.
Your on-line (yes another silly word) Grandmas, Auties, and Want-a-be Mommies were so lonely, too! We were lonely because we missed seeing your gentle Mommy cuddle and rock you!
Your loving Nanny Team promised us they would make sure you got tucked in and would give you extra good night kisses!
The next message was about the attentive Fixing Helpers wiggling wires, upgrading the what-nots (yet another silly word) and checking for snug plugs to fix your Panda “Nanny” Cam.
Up, down, on, off… a spin cycle of concern…
I wanted to recognize and thank your loving Nanny Team and the attentive Fixing Helpers.
Again, thank you!
If you have not read any of the creative writings that give our Pandas personality and a voice please give yourself a treat. They are contained in our comments, and go back to near the begining with P. Wong. Lucilla has given her title to Yun Zi lately, hers go back at least through Yun Zi in the den, but I am not sure before that. Once you have read a few (check back in this comment section and the previous one for a start) you will be able to scan through most comment sections quickly to pick up the rest easily. They are certainly worth the time~~~~P Wong started with Gao Gao, and is great fun to read and think of their personalities we endow them with. Also we have a Guy named Bruce who helped get most of the Panda cousins on a Space Shuttle Ride……with photos to prove the authenticity. Just go to this link and enjoy yourself.
In munbering I am using the original comment rather than total with “re~comments”. Not eac ative Folk rerepresented here a very small sampling.

First of all I have to say what a good mamma Bai is. Are thier cams in her bedroom? And is thier sound in the den so we can hear the communication between mamma and baby?
Just watched Bai Yun Bulldoze Boy Chubby Cubbie # 6 again live this morning as she rearranged the den again and nicknamed Cubbie Forest Gump as the only thought that came to mind was ” Run Forest Run ” as Cubbie # 6 tried to get out of the way…. This was almost a repeat of the Frenzied Den Cleaning earlier in the week before Exam # 6 as captured on YouTube by : DoxieMom19 ….. LOL
When will yun zi be going back to china?
Moderator’s note: That has not yet been determined.
very early this morning I saw the cubbie (fatty fella) testing his leg strength. he was on all fours and he looked like he wanted to spring himself forward. although he didn’t quite take a step it looked like he was able to push his upper body forward. it appeared he was able to lift and move his head around pretty well.
when Bai Yun lays down she adjusts chubby laddie’s position by rolling him. I guess one time, she rolled him a little harder or he was just in the right body position but he looked like he did a somersault. Bai Yun just curled up tighter to make a sleeping tent around him.
Hi all ‘Pandaholics’ – it is awhile since I last posted however I watch Bai Yun and her ‘mini me’ son several times each day, sometimes I do the online ‘night watch’ while people in other time zones are sleeping! Bai Yun often goes on her travels with or without her son, possibly to her room (which used to be cam 11) most nights about 01.00am (SDZ) – baby boy has an absolutely gorgeous nature and never complains when she leaves him alone in their den.
I noted Grammie’s comment that some people have been watching the cams for a long time. I am one of those ‘pandaholics’ and recall when the cams were first online and when we were able to watch Bai Yun after Hua Mei was born on 21.08.99 – when Hua Mei was older they had a wonderful ‘Snow Day’ playing in the snow. I also recall Dr.Don Lindberg (Research Leader?) and his Live Chats online using ‘messaging’ – at a later date he retired.
Shi Shi dec’d) is the father of Hua Mei – Gao Gao joined Bai Yun later and fathered her 5 wonderful cubs – each as precious as the other, so many happy memories of those times.
I am curious who Bai Yun used to take on her nightime walks and stay out under the ‘Stars’ – P.Wong or Suzanne and the staff will remember? was it Zhennie? our new baby cub may also go on such nightime ‘outings’ to (cam 14?)
I recall all the cam no’s however with the new HD camera they no longer apply.
Bai is a very experienced mom who adores her cubs, little boy will do well for all who care about him.
Regards to people who may recall earlier days and all staff who look after the panda’s with such expertise ….
Stick around Hazel and lend us your great reccollections. It is always fun to hear from somebody who really knows so much about Bai Yun and her family. She is the rock that anchors them together. I envy you the sight of all of her babies. When she was first having babies I was taking care of some of mine, and then my Hubby, so it wasn’t until Yun Zi that I found I could view them…..it was instant love witht he Pandas and the cam provided by the SD Zoo….love grammmie
Hopefully you’re taking the weekend off, Moderator!!
In honor of our 2 month old panda cub (born July 29th), I’ve put together a compilation of all scenes I’ve captured this past week of the little tank tumbling and of Bai Yun taking him from the den. Also, noted on the last frame was that Bai Yun and Cubbie appeared to have spent the night outside the den Friday night into Saturday morning.

http://youtu.be/30WPH0OppGI
Thank you DoxieMom! I had never been able to catch Bai Yun taking her little one out of the den. I would see the den empty and then later with baby again, so now I know how she does it! Great montage of his greatest hits thus far, and I’ll view it when the den is empty (like it was for so long last night) and I need a panda fix, lol.
This was such fun! I’ve sent the link to several people so they can enjoy the extreme cutness too. Thanks for your hard work and skill in putting this together.
Thank you for that precious compilation DoxieMom
Too funny – thank you
I finally gave up for return to the den Fri. night and went to bed
Thank you for this! I can see now that she grabs him by any body part that works.
Thank you for the clips of the little cubbie flipping over and tumbling. I have never seen that before. I have seen his mother take him out of the den several times before, but I have never seen the little gymnast in training. I missed the little guy and his mother last night when they were out of their sleeping area for hours and hours on end. Like others have said on the blog, I like to also watch them for a while before I go to bed because it relaxes me. And last night there was no watching these two like I’m used to. I have a question for DoxieMom and all others who have made video clips of mother and son in their sleeping area. How are you making these videos? The only thing I know how to do is click on the postcard option.
Thank you so much for this video. I never cease to be amazed at people who are technical and know how to do all this. Since none of us can watch the panda cam all day it is wonderful to see what we missed. I thought I would fall on the floor laughing when Bai drug the cub out of the den by his leg. Scary at first but didn’t seem to hurt him.
They learn very young to just relax and let momma have her way.
DoxieMom – Thank you for this delightful compilation of Chubbie Cubbie’s latest adventures! Every time he rolled over and then over again down into the middle of the nest just cracked me up! I’ve been meaning to let you know for a few years now how much your videos are appreciated!!
Thanks for this, Doxie. This little guy is growing like a weed and it’s fun to get the condensed version if you couldn’t watch the original action. I like the term “Little Tank”.
Maybe my memory isn’t what it used to be but, it seems like Momma Bai Yun is taking cubbie outside much earlier than she did with Yun Zi. Is that the way of it or should I start taking some memory supplements….hehehehe!
Moderator’s note: Take those supplements, Tiny! She took Yun Zi out at an earlier age. Read the post from September 15, 2009: Pandas: All is Well.
Well Tiny, I know I am memory challenged due to age and inllnesses, but it seems to me that she did not take Yunior out as much or so soon, but the Moderator knows for where of she speaks~so who am I to say???? I just love that she seems so happy in his company, and he in hers. He does not seem to stuggle against her frequent bathing.
As the cub spent the wee hours of Saturday morning out with Mom, is there a bed of bamboo out there where Bai can place cubbie — bedroom, sunroom, garden room?
Moderator’ note: Yes, wherever Bai Yun chooses to make it. She’s got plenty of material to decorate with.
The latest bear den cleaning was fun the watch (@11:45am).
Some rearranging is needed. Bai place cubbie at the bottom of the den as she seems to love cleaning the top of the den. She pawed so much that cubbie got a pile of bamboo falling on him. I especially liked it when she put her head down, left foot on den floor and right foot on the wall and started shoveling. It’s funny when she tests out the floor by sitting down and shovels more if she does not like what her bum tells her.
When she was done, it was great to see that she knew exactly where the cub was after cleaning. He got some swipes with her tongue. Gotta clean the cub too after all that bamboo flying. Now it’s time for a nap
Doxie Mom
Thanks for the video / I always said he was a mover and shaker/rocker and rollar and I was right . Gone 9 hours ? I saw them over at the Balboa Park Club Ballroon Dancing last night. Dancin the West Coast Swing / Rumba / and they were still there when I left /probably stopped for Ice Cream on the way back to the Zoo.
That sounds about right to me…Love grammmie
Is there a camera in the next room where mom is taking the baby? Will we be able to see them interact in there?
Dear Moderator,
\
After you have finished watching DoxieMom’s video of Our Little Tank Rolls and Relocates, is there someone you can ask to get and post a picture of Bai Yun’s den from the side? I would love to see how high the sides of it are banked up with bamboo. It would give us a good understanding on why and how #6 is able to roll all over. I definitely think he is getting assistance because most of the time he is sound asleep and after his roll, he is still asleep.
Moderator’s note: As I’m sure you can appreciate, Lee, we don’t want to disturb mother and cub by going in there with a camera to take a photo of the den.
The Little One is constantly rolling “up” because of all the bamboo that Bai has brought into the den. There’s a lot that she just leaves at the entrance. This why when he is at the entrance and leans to the left he starts rolling. Also, Bai seems to like to do her housekeeping at the “top” of the den where she paws lots of the bamboo to the “bottom” of the den and then sits around the “top” to kind of flatten the bamboo there
If you look at the early vids that DoxieMom was so nice to compile, you’ll see a lot less bamboo. There wasn’t a bounce to it like there is now. *LOL*
The little one still needs a bit more practice getting from his back to all paws. When I get to watch, I’m cheering him on and give him applause when he succeeds. Plus he’s learning to scoot his butt and crawl a bit.
Moderator: I definitely would never want anyone to disturb Bai or #6. I actually meant when you have taken him out for a check-up or when they are no where near it.
Moderator’s note: You’d rather have a photo of the den opening than of the cubbie during his exam? Our photographer can’t be in two places at once.
If you check videos or photos folks have taken on Tuesday afternoon
from noon to 2:15 p.m. Oct 2, 2012 you will see part of the wood that makes up the den floor is thicker along the sides then thinner as it reaches the interior of the floor, confirming it is shaped the way it is so Bai has some help in creating a thinner center for the Cub(ettes) to roll into~it is downhill to the center. I only hope the Cub does not get too curious and fall through the “Hole”! I never saw the floor of the den except for the days Bai completely cleand out the den. It may have been the end if the end of denning as far as she was concerned~but not as far as Yunior was concerned.
This little one could not have been born to a better MOM!!
He is a lucky lil fellow
I had such a wonderful laugh-out-loud moment earlier today when watching Panda Cam: Bai was laying down and had Chubbie Cubbie resting on her chest. She then decided to re-arrange the den (as she likes to do!), and as she sat up, Chubbie Cubbie very gently slid off her chest. The camera angle was such that it looked like Chubbie Cubbie ended up on his head, tummy-deep in bamboo…..all I could see were his little black leggies waving around!! Mom Bai didn’t even glance over, she was so intent on re-arranging the den…..’boo was flying everywhere! She was digging down so deep into the ‘boo, it looked like she was about to stand on her head, and for a moment I thought that both Bai and Cubbie where just going about their morning yoga!!! “All together now, little one…downward dog!!!”
Thank you, again, SDZ, a thousand times over, for not only allowing all of us around the world to share in the joy and wonderment of watching this most incredible Panda mom and her little one, but also for your constant and most awesome care and work with these beautiful and endangered animals!!!!
My personal baby Panda experience began with Mei Lan’s birth at Zoo Atlanta, and I have followed all the US Panda cubbies since then, thanks to the amazing technology and funds from generous people, companies and organizations providing these Panda cams. And I love the fact that the zoos allow the cameras…I suspect because they know that every time someone makes a ‘connection’ with an animal, awareness is raised! : )
On a side note to the Panda Cub Naming Committee, perhaps when they are in the process of narrowing down all the thousands of submitted name suggestions so that we all can vote on them, they consider that it’s really time that handsome dad Gao Gao be somehow honored in this Chubbie Cubbie’s name. After all, not only might this be Bai Yun’s last little one, but Papa Gao had done the most supreme job of ALL Panda dads, six little cubbies, and all au natural! : )
Hua Mei (Bai’s first cub) was fathered by Shi Shi, by artificial insemination. This is not to take the limelight off of Gao Gao — who, I agree, has done a supreme job of breeding!
You have lots of fun in store for you. He will continue to try to get away and she will start using her “one Paw over the head blind catching of cub to deposit on chest” move. Bai is really good at that one.
Gao Gao is not the father of Bai’s first baby, that was her first hubby Shi Shi, by AI. Us busybodies here in the comments section will let you know if you have a fact wrong (unless we forget that it is), or help answer questions~~~and we hope if we steer you wrong somebody will step up to make the correction so we are only giving correct answers.
It’s been so much fun watching tonight! Cubbie is clearly trying desperately to get away from Bai and the constant tongue-baths. Everytime he gets his feet straigt under him, she snatches him back!
I’m pretty sure the little one took his first steps tonight at 8:15. He’s been showing an inclination, rocking, getting up. But this was a concerted effort and pretty successful at that. Interesting to me that Bai seemed to scoop him up just as he was about to make a real go of it…almost as though she wanted to keep him just as he was, just one more day. He will be up and moving in no time. ( sigh ) How fast they grow up. Thank-you so much at the zoo for this little on-line miracle.
oh Sorry….that would be 3:15 pm CA time.
wooaa…I can’t edit here… ( 5:15 )
Between 8:30 &9:30 pm EDT, I finally saw Bai do what you all have been talking about the last week! She was vigorously moving and throwing all of that boo around in the den with her little boy under her sometimes getting buried under some of it! She almost did a summersault holding her cub! She was a very funny momma doint all of that and even looked up at the pandacam for a few seconds. Then she finally sat down where she moved that boo out of the way, got her cub on her furry stomach, and started to do her nibbling on him. She even did a little bit of baby rocking with her cub in her arms! That was so cute! Now, she’s hunched over her cub so I think he’s getting his dinner right now.
I’ve been checking on Mei Xiang on the NZ pandacams off and on all week since she lost her baby panda, and everytime I saw her on the cam, she was in her den sleeping! Been getting on the cam mostly at nite, but she was even her den earlier in the week in the middle of the day. I’m wondering if she’s experiencing some animal type of depression because of the loss? When I saw her in her den last nite, I almost cried and felt so bad for her. I do hope that she will start to come out of this funk that she’s in and get back to normal real soon. From what I’ve read on the last update, she is eating, drinking water, doing her bathroom business out of the den, but she has also gone back into the den to sleep in there. Keep sending prayers to Mei, please!
Gonna go back to see Bai and baby!

I’ve been watching Mei Xiang, too. I’ve seen her up and around eating and moseying around her other two rooms. The NZ keepers make it interesting for her by putting up bamboo like its growing. They even once put one of her play balls atop one of the bamboos. She hunts out all the treats that the keepers place around her rooms. Though she likes dragging bamboo in to munch on in her den.
I also take a gander at Tian Tian who likes to fall asleep while sitting in his plethora of bamboo. He just face planted himself after all that munching.
Lun Lun and Po gives me a preview go what I can look forward to when Bai and the little will be able to start wrangling together.
Yes, I just love all the Panda Cams.
Gao Gao is known to just lay back in his pile of Bamboo in the midddle of lunch and drop right off to sleep.
It’s amazing how they just fall asleep wherever they are. While many of us two-legged mammals cannot go to sleep.
Maybe one of them will write a short book or pamphlet on sleeping well with the help of our creative folks.
Watching our Little Boodha sleep. Saw him roll like a ball today, after Bai cleaned him and decided to go for a walk. She just sort of shoved him aside, he rolled across the den, sleeping all through it! lol
this is my first time watching a panda cubbie grow. does he sleep a normal amount? I think the expected timeline was that he would start to walk b/t 3-4 months of age. will he sleep significantly less then? I guess that even Yun Zi, Gao Gao, and Bai Yun sleep quite a lot. I’ll try looking on the fact pg for ave sleeping hours.
I have a feeling that nobody warned you that you will begin to think of him as YOURS.
If Pandas were not called Panda Bears I think they might be called Sleeping Bears. Their diet in the wild is mostly Bamboo, which takes a great deal of work to find, clean for eating, and to chew…….for a very low return of nutrients. The zoos try to keep them as much like their wild cousis as they can, within the peramatures of managed care, and even with better nutrition on a steady basis they tire easily and sleep a great deal.. Hopefully you will get to see them play at night and in the early moring hours, they burn up energy then too.
Oops….my bad! I should have said FIVE cubbies from Gao Gao, not six! Must not forget Shi Shi’s contribution to the cause! : )
8:53 a. m. Pac. Time. Did anybody else see Cubbie Cubbie do a quick roll flip to the center of the den?????
This is my frst time with the pandas. I’m hooked for life. Mom has done alot of tossing of the den today. She had to dig for him at one point. I do see that she loves to snuggle with him when they sleep.
Bai loves her teddy cubbies!
He’s in REM sleep, very cute.
True but Gao Gao got to enjoy his giving for his cubs. Shi Shi’s though certainly worthy of note was given at a distance. Still his contribution gave us Hua Mei and she was truly awesome.
Anyone looking at our little cub on his back all alone and wanting to reach out and tickle his tummy? He is so cute. Just a little under a month to go now and our cub will get his name. Time goes by so fast.
I’m watching Baby Bundle twitching and twitching his legs and arms…I’m betting he’s dreaming of Mom gnawing and ‘getting’ him many times a day. I’m very concerned Mom is going to put one of her claws or teeth in his eyes! It will be a hugh relief when he’s too old to flip and twist and hung upside down. I’d be having nightmares, too!
He has many months to go before he is too big for her to flip him around like pancakes. On the other hand Rita Petita got a good photo sequence the day Yun Zi decided he was her hat and stryled himself in 3 distinct ways. She took it with a smile, and he was no lightweight at the time……but she smiled for the camera anyway. It was getting close to weaning time. Bai does her “Power Walk Thing” when she knows it is near time for the keepers to clean and put out fresh food and snackies, it is how she keeps her girlish figure. Yunior used to sit on a branch at her head height, and try to jummp onto her back for a ride, but never quite got there. I did see a photo once that showed Mei Sheng riding on momma’s back, I think it was a snow day, but I am not absolutely sure.
Just checked in on mama and baby, and I could swear Bai was playing with the cub along with licking him. She cuddled him in her arms and sort of moved him back and forth. I was just the sweetest thing and her movements just said, “I love you my little cubbie.” What a delight these two are going to be as we get to watch baby Panda’s growth. Thanks to all you Zoo helpers!
When are you going to set-up the other cameras so when Bai takes cubbie out of the den we can still watch?
Moderator’s note: We have a den set up in Bai Yun’s “garden room,” but not in her bedroom. If she takes him out there during the day, I’m sure the Panda Cam volunteer will follow the action.
And here I was looking forward to watching this cubbie try to get up the log to the bed platform like Yunior did. It was also fun watching Yunior in the drinker, that he used as a foot bath and a toosh bath.
I posted earlier that this cub has to be Bai’s mellowest. It also has to be the cleanest. I think Bai must have OCD in her old age. Nevertheless, she is queen mother!
this afternoon, while Bai Yun was watching, chubby laddie was really trying to crawl. it was a very rocky motion. he didn’t actually make walking steps but it looks like he’s practicing more how to transition weight between his hind and forelegs. of course Bai Yun soon after picked him up for a heavy duty spin cycle. it’s funny to watch him protest then.
I’m reading a book, “The Last Panda” by George B. Schaller. he made an interesting comment about the panda mom biting the dependent cubbie as an act intended to stimulate. the SDZ chubby laddie seems very sleepy except during and after interactions with mom. so perhaps the biting has some role in his muscular coordination development. just speculating.
I had not heard of the book “The Last Panda” can you direct me as to where to get It???? Thank You……Love grammmie
hi, I found the book at my local library. if yours doesn’t carry it, maybe it could be found on amazon? just to warn that Schaller is a really good nature writer but he doesn’t gloss over the cultural politics of panda conservation during the 80s. I find it very adventurous to read of his camping in bamboo forests and trying to discover elusive and mysterious pandas. he gives brief descriptions of individual panda personalities which I find intriguing. even after watching SDZ pandas for hours, I don’t feel like I have that many clues about their personalities.
a few minutes ago, Bai was sitting, and the little guy was at her feet, on his tummy, looking toward the den entrance like he was on his way, when she scooped him up and started a bath. It looked like there was a lot of “awww, Ma, lemme go play” going on!
When cubbie is able to walk and he and Bai are out in the sun room, or bedroom, will we still be able to see them on the web cam? So looking forward to it.
Moderator’s note: Yes.
Great question I’ve been wondering about as well. I remember watching Yun Zi out there, and it was just delightful. Can’t wait to see #6 out there whenever his time comes.
We panda fans are enjoying cubbie #6 immensely. I cannot fathom a panda world with Bai Yun and Gao living anywhere else except San Diego., even when Bai becomes too old for breeding. I suggest the San Diego Zoological Society consider establishing an old panda’s home at the Safari Park. There is plenty of room in the hills and valley areas surrounding the developed park. Just put out the word and we panda fans will raise funds and interest world-wide. And, don’t overlook a panda rest home cam. I would love to volunteer at the Safari Park and Zoo when I retire in two years.
Great idea !!!
I think it is a great idea to hv a panda retirement home f Bai n Gao_they r so loved.
Is there no longer a camera in the bedroom?
Moderator’s note: The keepers can monitor the bedroom camera, but the Panda Cam is installed in the adjoining “garden room.”
Just for fun here is an older photo by Rita Petita of Yun Zi laughing. If it were newer I would say he has been watching the gag reels of the on going action in the Den, or how Bai and Babette de Panda look trying on all of their outfits to show off for each other, including their floppy hats. Chubbie Cubbie would be busy if he could get them to both take him out dancing again. Yunior it looks like you will have Miss Panda Universe 2008 all to yourself……Babette comes with a sense of hunor and all the cuppy cakes you can eat. Love Grammmie

Awwwwwww. That was so cute. I miss our little baby boy Yun Zi. But hopefully we have lots of amazing and amusing things to looks forward to from #6.
No matter what Bai did in the 7pm tongue lashing, nibbling and twirling, the kid remained sleeping. At one point, Bai looked up at the camera “Can you believe after all that, he’s still sleeping?”
I was a bit concerned that there may have been problems with the kid, but I continue to watch and hope for him to move on his own — AAHHHH I feel a lot better now. HE MOVED. Kept me in suspense for 45 mins!
Moderator’s note: Please remember, Jusy, that the cub is receiving weekly veterinary exams and has been declared quite healthy. He is a baby and needs his sleep. No need to worry, just enjoy.
I know the SDZ staff are taking excellent care of them. I’m totally enjoying my experience in being able to watch them from the other coast. This gives me a reason to want to learn new stuff, like other pandas around the world, video capturing and video editing
It seems as we get older our imaginations play tricks
The panda cams at the SDZ have never had sound so we could not heard Yuni crying for his mother as stated above. It’s been 3 years since Bai had a cub but I would guess it’s hard to recall how often she took her cub out of the den
Moderator’s note: We encourage all who are wondering how this cub compares to Yun Zi at this age, to go back to blogs written at that time: September and October 2009. To do this, select the “Pandas” category, and scroll down until you get to those dates. Happy reading!
I was 3 years younger when I watched Yun Zi in the den~~~~and the den cam had sound at the time. Other watchers~~~~please help us out…I only watched on direct link with the SDZoo, not through a multicam site when Yun Zi was a baby…..I would hate to think I imagined all those months, but would rather know I am mistaken than to pass on wrong information………Love Grammmie
Moderator’s note: Our Panda Cam has never had sound. Never.
The only panda cam site that has sound is the NZP. And the sound you hear when you are on the multi-cam site is from the NZP cams.
Well “Strip My Gears And Call Me Shiftless’ I really thought I was hearing Yun Zi. That is why this comment section is so important, it gives us all a chance to say things, and have those things corrected. Talk about feeling foolish~I do feel a bit like that. Thank you guys for taking the time to set me straight.,,,Love Grammmie
from time to time I think about Yunior and Gao Gao. one of the events which I find humorous is recalling a time when Yunior serendipitously shifted his interest while eating bamboo. he opened his mouth, still full of leaves, let the contents drop out. then he moved on to whatever spurred his interest then. he feels like a playful youth.
When Momma takes her little baby boy out of her nest, can we observe them? Thanks from Mississippi
Moderator’s note: Once Bai Yun starts taking him into the “garden room,” the Panda Cam will be able to capture their activities.
I’m going to miss those views of Mom and cubbie in Bai’s bedroom–the sill to the Sun Room, the drinker, the scale, the grate in the corner. Sigh. Maybe next year?
I finally got to tune into the cutest channel on this planet today. Mommy and Baibee are both very cute. LOVE THIS!!!
Oh my goodness… cubbers really wanted to escape this morning — but mama was having nothing of it and literally trapped him under her — with his head, shoulders and front legs squirming, squirming and trying to escape. It was so cute. Looks like he is becoming quite a handful — and also cuter by the minute.
I think my prediction of this little fellow turning into a fun rowdy little cub is coming true. What a wiggle worm he is. Lol simple precious.
Our little Boodha is sleeiping on his back, but his back legs are kicking up a storm! i wonder what he is dreaming about? He has never climbed a tree or seen his Mommy climb, so is it instinct or is he dreaming of one of Bai’s twirling tubbies?
I wonder how long mommy pandas mourn the lost of their babies.
I remember early last week, when I heard about the lost at National Zoo, I went to their panda cam and saw Mei Xiang lying on her back near a wall and kicking the wall as if to say “Why! Why! Why!”. So heartbreaking to watch her.
Glad we have HIS ROYAL IRRESISTIBLE CUTENESS to cheer me up.
I am not getting any work done. I am constantly tuning onto Panda Cam.
Wecome to the club, James!!
You sound like the best of us!!!!!
I asked this question the other day and haven’t received a response yet. To all those who are making video clips of mother and cutie cubbie – how are you doing it, because all I know how to do is click on the postcard option? I’m looking forward to that answer and to when the little guy’s physical exam video is posted this week on the blog site. He looks like he has grown quite a bit since his exam last Tuesday. And I wanted to add a comment about the panda mom in Washington, DC. Just like the other blog writers have been saying, I can’t bear to watch her on the panda cam either – it is way too sad. I hope she gets to feeling better soon.
You would need a program, not provided by SDZ, that permits you to capture the streaming of the Panda Cam. Once you capture the streaming, you might want a program that you can use to edit what you capture. How long can one watch them nap and they do nap a lot *LOL*
A person named Daniel has a Multi~cam set~up (that kept us other folks sane while we only got a white screen from the zoo the other night) showing a variety of cams of the USA and around the world….the drop down menu on top left guides your selection. There is sound only for The National Zoo on the page having 3 of the 4 cams in the USA so be advised that you will probably hear Mei Xaing. To not upset myself more this last week+ I turned down the sound and used only the SdZoo to watch. Within the things you will read on page one is a section on taking snaps and videos, but I have never gotten past watching the Pandas to read them. I hope this helps …Love Grammmie
little chubby laddie is really increasing in motor coordination. watched him kick around on his back (actually he started out sleeping sort of on his head and shoulders I think he rolled funny and there was probably a physical depression in the hay). after a relatively short time, he managed to roll himself over to his tummy, despite it looking like he was on uneven ground. he is getting smarter by the minute. little sweetheart.
Oh, my goodness. I was busy for a couple of days with stuff, came back to look…, and I think Bai Yun’s Little Darling Boy looks like he’s doubled in size! Oh, but he is Gorgeous!
I’ll be back when someone removes the picture of the snake from the web page. I started scrolling, saw that…, and, well…. I was scared badly as a child by harmless little garter/garden snakes, and in 60+ years I’ve never gotten over it (altho I did try when I was younger). Can’t stand to see images of snakes in any way shape or form.
Love and adore the Baby and his Mother, Bai Yun…!
Nonny~~at last~~~somebodoy with my same story. I have had a phobia ever since, and at 66 I am not looking to change it. Try my move so you do not miss a blog or comments….I slide a window to the right until those pics on the side of the page are covered up…then everybody can enjoy. Hooray for all of the folks who do not have our problem, and a solution for those not looking for a cure. I usually have a shrunken window down to the left of the screen of the den cam, and top left is a notepad gathering tips, stories Etc. especially stuff I am gleaning from the blog to pass on to a few friends who cannot read everything in blog and comments, so finding room by sliding the main viewer to the right I can see what I need to but avoid seeing things that upset me. If what I have said doesn’t make sense call your Techno Guru Buddie so they can help you…Love Grammmie
Nothing like an old fool [Me!]. I do that screen indent cover-up thing for a couple of other web sites that have annoying ads. My mind “seized up” seeing that snake instead of a panda video that was there a week or so ago, and I forgot to remember to do something sensible. I got to see your message (and others I am catching up on) by holding my hand over the right side of the screen until I got past the snake.
I mean, really…. I must get my “Panda Fix” for the day, so I really must check in to keep up with the latest news. Like everyone else here, I’m hopelessly in love with the baby panda and ‘squeee’ every time I see the little darling, whether he’s sleeping or active or feeding or cuddling with Bai Yun….
Happy Viewing of Mama’s Darling Boy!
Nonny
Chubby cubby reminds me of Bai Yun’s personal plush, sqooshy ,fluffy , velvety football that she likes to tuck under her chin.
Can’t believe the positions Bai gets herself into while sleeping. Right now she and #6 are belly to belly.
Can you change the view to the outside camera once in awhile? Maybe when the mom goes out and especially when she takes her cub.
Any exams of the cutie scheduled for today/tomorrow? Can’t wait to see how much the little tank has grown. He looks a lot bigger from last week, but sometimes it’s hard to tell. I don’t know if it’s just me, but he sure seems a lot more active the last few days, at least when mom’s around. It’s like she wears him out on purpose so he just snoozes while she can go relax and eat in peace.
Moderator’s note: Exam #7 is scheduled for Thursday.
Yep, she gives the kid hope that he can scoot out and then snatches him up. He then has to start all over again. I keep hoping that she will let him keep going. It’s not like he’s a speed demon
I think that by holding him back, she is providing the resistance training to build up his leg muscles. That it just looks like she doesn’t want him to go out there, but in reality she is getting him to work those leg muscles so he can be ambulatory.
i am warming up my “oh, oooo” voice…
thanks for the heads up for Exam #7
Wow! I’ve never seen such a struggle between Bai and one of her cubs as right this moment! I believe he just finished nursing and wants more, but she wants to give him a bath and he will have nothing to do with it! All paws, kicking in her face, taking whacks at her, all bear, all boy, trying to get away! You may have your hands full with him in the next exam!!
I just came across this as I was looking for the Panda Cam via browser since the iPad app is not behaving.
http://www.sandiegozoo.org/pandacam/panda_cub_milestones.html
This is the first time I’ve seen this. I wonder where cubbie #6 falls in with his siblings. Great job, keepers!
Moderator’s note: It’s an old page, but still very informative. I refer to it all the time.
I hope it gets updated once Cubbie gets named. It’s a great page.
Man!
I always worry Mom is going to step on him or crush him with her body!
Moderator’s note: Rest assured that Bai Yun is very careful with her cub.
It seems that way. I think Bai uses her paws to feel before she finally puts her paw down when walking out. As for when she sleeps atop the poor kid who struggles to get out, I think she sleeps atop one of her paws to provide a hole. Plus, with the amount of bamboo she’s lay down in there everyday, it’s not a solid surface. It’s become a bouncy room
I’m at work, & that’s where I usually keep an eye on the Pandas & the Elephants. Mostly lately I’ve been watching Bay Yun & the little one but today all I’ve got is a white screen. No picture. Yesterday it was real dark & didn’t look like the Panda area at all. It looked like metal equipment but it was really dark on the screen. What’s up? Is something wrong now? I’ll be really disappointed if I can’t continue to see the Pandas, especially the baby.
Moderator’s note: Please make sure you have the most recent version of your browser.
What happened to Doxie mom and her wonderful videos?
never mind – i didn’t go back far enough!
I didn’t believe my eyes, but anything is possible with these two
At about 7pm, Bai pushed the little one to the entrance of the den. The kid just rolled into the bedroom. There must be mound there and with the right placement, the kid will roll into or out of the den *LOL*
I’m not sure if Bai believed her eyes when she watched the kid roll out. She soon follow the kid out. I guess the kid is going to get his bath outside of our viewing pleasure unless she decides to take care of herself and then bring the kid back in.
They sure keep me entertained!
DoxieMom captured it in her latest video… I knew I could count on her.

Well, I just got to see Bai Yun, cleaning baby, and she found his tickle spot. That was so cute. He has got to be the cleanest baby fur ball panda, ever. I don’t remember seeing her clean the others, as much as she does this one. Nothing better than a clean ball of cuteness. I just enjoy this opportunity. I would be bummed if I could not see this, so thanks again, SDZ.
When is the next cub exam? I can’t wait to see him up close again.
Moderator’s note: The 7th exam is scheduled for Thursday morning.
OMG, I am so very hooked on this baby and Mama panda. I call the baby Sandy for now since he is in San Diego and I am in Florida. Anyways I love watching baby Sandy and Mama everyday. There are so very cute. I love them!!!
Bai Yun is bring in more bamboo than see did with or is I just don’t remember. When she moves it around she burns her baby. Any how he is becoming a roly poly.
Does everyone feel the way I do when watching this baby? My arms ache because I just want to hold him! What a sweetheart. I now have my 14 year old grandson hooked on watching the Panda Cam. He tries to be so cool about it but every so often he updates me on what the baby is doing.
I just saw mom drag the boy out of the den by one leg. where does she take him? how long does she keep him out of the den???
Moderator’s note: She takes him in her bedroom, which is the room the den opens into, so he’s not going far at this stage.
I am watching it right now when I should be getting ready to go to work. LOL!
It looks like Mama wants to give Baby a bath and he is trying to squirm away.
Oh boy Oh boy Oh boy!!!!!!!! Where’s my lil’ chubby cubby????!!!!! I wonder where o where could he be??!! ;D Can’t wait!!!! exam #7 on the way!!!
what has happened to the panda cam all day it has not been in the den sunday oct 7th i hope it will be back soon i love watching the little one
Hi caretakers–I just saw Mommy digging to China in the straw, then giving our baby boy a very vigorous bath, seemingly concentrated on his lower half. If baby goes potty in the straw, is that Mommie’s way of disposing of it? It is just so precious to see her giving him a bath with him squirming to get away. Again–kudos to the best Mommy of every animal species I’ve ever seen…what a sweet, loving Mommy. And to think she’s done this six times! Linny B.
Oh my gosh! Has anyone noticed that baby panda is outside by himself! I didn’t see how he got out there!
Oh my goodness! Awesome article dude! Thanks, However I am going through difficulties with your
RSS. I don’t know the reason why I cannot subscribe to it. Is there anybody having similar RSS issues? Anybody who knows the answer can you kindly respond? Thanx!!
