Veterinarian Meg Sutherland-Smith confirmed it’s a boy for proud parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao!
We had the cub’s third exam this morning. Animal Care Supervisor Gaylene was the lucky keeper to pick up the chubby cub this week while Bai Yun was happily eating her breakfast of bamboo, biscuits, apples, yams, and carrots. The little cub now weighs 3.2 pounds (1,452 grams), 14 ounces (400 grams) more than last week! The cub was very calm during all his measurements, which were taken by our nutritionist.
We are all very excited to know that the cub is a boy. That is three girls and three boys for mother Bai Yun.
Jen Becerra is a senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Read her previous post, Yun Zi: Favorite Cues.

Oh I just KNEW it! A bouncing baby boy!
No new video for us? :- ( Oh well, can’t be ungrateful for we do have THE best look 24/7 & for that I am VERY grateful :- ) Maybe next time.
Moderator’s note: Since you asked so nicely…
YAY!!! Gao and Bai now officially have their very own Brady bunch… how cute!! Glad to know our Chubbers is healthy and growing like a weed! Gosh… it’s seems like yesterday when Bai gave birth and Chubbers is 39 days old!! Time sure flies — looking forward to the 100 day naming ceremony and seeing him explore the great outdoors — always the most fun to watch!
Moderator’s note: Now I’ve got that theme song stuck in my head!
Beautiful baby. I would like to try to name him but just can’t find the spot to fill in the application. Is there an url I could use? Thanks
Moderator’s note: We are not taking name suggestions yet, but look for information very soon.
I am so happy, Bai Yun’s 6 pack is complete 3 of each!!!!!!!!!
Okay Gag lets get lots of Gao honoring names for the Zoo’s Panda Panel to choose from. I am not good at that kind of thing so I am counting on the creative ones out there to supply us with plenty. Third try (exam) was the charm I guess. Congratulations to all….Love Grammmie
Ditto and yippie! I got my wish granted, that Bai Yun has three offspring for each gender. Three cheers for Bai Yun!!!
Congratulations!! I bet Yunior is doing donuts around his exhibit at the thought of having a baby brudder to train!
I imagine you are all happy too as now you will have another boy to compare data on. It’s amazing how different they all are in spite of the similarities!
Oh my goodness, he is sooooo cute! I love him! Congrats to Gao and Bai for another boy cubbie! I can’t wait for the naming contests!! All of you must have a very hard time not melting into ooohs and aaahs during the entire exam! lol Bai is such a good Mommy….I love watching them together, even when napping. So adorable! Thank you for sharing the video…what incredibly adorable feet he has!!
The best news is that he cub was calmer so your visits with him have really worked. I noticed that he still likes your hand under his chin too.
Wow! In two sentences, I used he, him or his, 4 times. Gained a pound almost. I’d love to lose 1 a week
Congrats Bai and Gao (Stop grinning Papa Bear) and the big brudder Yun Zi! Now on with the naming!
Happy Day! Great News!!! Son of Gao! Gosh he is adorable!
Yea……………perfect! And what a cutie HE is!
BTW, love the foot movement when you scratch him.
I love his movements also – seems like he’s got a ticklish spot!!!!! Congratutlations on the baby boy!!!
Oh yes, the foot reflex/kicking is soooo adorable when he’s being rubbed. I watched this video 5 times in a row, he’s so cute! Lucky zoo handlers. Congrats all around on a successful birth.
Glad to hear that Bai had another boy. Curious, were they able to tell during this exam if this cub has webbed feet like Gao’s other cubs?
I forggot to askk about that since I was so excited to have another boy. On the Smithsonian Blog they talked last week about a bit of second color on the tail tip like our Yunior~~~is that holding too?????
Ever since this darling boy was born, all I can think is that he should be named Yum Yum. He is so adorable. What great care Bai Yun gives him, and all of his caregivers.
Congrats on another boy! Too bad I can’t see him when I visit this month.
Yay! Wonderful news. Our newst little man appears to be on the same curve as big brother Mei Sheng so far.
What a wonderful surprise! It’s a boy! I just watched the video of the cub’s third exam. He is absolutely the cutest little guy and he’s ticklish. During the exam the keeper was scratching behind his ear and his little hind foot was going a mile-a-minute. Absolutely the cutest thing I’ve ever seen – a ticklish little panda cub.
Congratulations San Diego Zoo!
Or a Cubbie who thinks he is a puppie.
Wow! It’s a boy! So happy to have a beautiful unique panda cub from Bai and Gao. He has a great pair of lungs and isn’t afraid to use them. The 3rd exam only mustered a little coo which was fun to hear regardless. Looking forward to seeing him grow. Thanks San Diego Zoo!
So, so cute. What a beautiful gift to see such a precious little one. Your website makes that possible. Thank you so much fot sharing. I hope I can visit again some day. My last trip was back in the 80′s to see the first Pandas on display.
Gail
Of course its a boy!! Now can we PLEASE start seeing brother and papa once in awhile again. They are terribly missed.
What can we say other than he’s a BIG BOY now as he weighs 3.2 Pounds and he gained 14 Ounces in just 1 week….. I guess he really is Son Of ” Big Big ” Gao Gao… <3 <3 <3 <3 <3
yippie its a boy, How is Bai Yun? she seems to pant a lot, is it because of the warm weather youv’e had. Did you feel the earth quake the other day?
Glad all is fine, now its time to get a name for that boy.
Panda Team responds: Although it’s been warm in San Diego, Bai Yun does have the benefit of climate-controlled bedrooms. However, panting is a normal behavioral response of many mammals to heat, allowing them to cool their bodies. Bai Yun pants to thermoregulate. Staff monitors her closely and makes note of such behavior, but we haven’t seen anything to concern us.
wow, another boy, have to find a chinese name for conceived in a storm, rain, mud ……. wow, watched the video 6 times, he’s so quiet and relaxed, you’re doing a good job giving him some love while he’s away from Momma
Yeah, another boy. OMG another YunZi – the best is yet to come
But will he be able to give Auntie Rita Petita that Oh So Innocent Look???
Grammmie: I am so happy for you it is a boy / Rain Man / Me too. You wished it to be. 3 and 3 that is a good mix. So another Prince Fluffy Butt. You coined that. I remember. What a cutie.
This one looks rather “Broad in the Beam”, so Yunior retains his title~~This one is King Fluffy Butt.
I love the way his little foot moves when he’s being scratched on the head.
It’s great hear that he’s healthy!
What wonderful news. Can hardly wait until the next video of the darling. I have noticed that Bai leaves him more these last few days.
Thanks again SDZ staff for all you’re doing for all the animals in your care.
I vote for “Gao Yun”. If I recall having read this earlier, Gao Gao means “High High” and of course Yun is “Cloud”, right? How cool for both Bai Yun and Gao Gao to be able to contribute both their names!!!
What do you all think????
Happy Day … our little Cubby (some of you may remember a Cubby on the Mickey Mouse Club)!!
Just keep those Gao names coming in….the more there are the better the chance tha our Gao Gao gets properly honored~~~if Bai can be included too why not???
I absolutely love watching the baby pandas, I’m sitting here way too much lately. Also love watching the elephant cam but these little panda babies are really something. When do they open their eyes and ears? Can’t wait till he starts playing and hopefully I’ll get down to San Diego to visit once he’s out for viewing. Thanks SO much for this opportunity. Carol
Moderator’s note: He should be opening his eyes within the next week or so.
YES! I just KNEW Cub #6 is a boy! I am so happy that Bai can “boast” of having an even 3-3 split of sons and daughters. She must be supremely satisfied with her record of perfect boys and perfect girls! And Gao must be secretly proud that, although I’m sure he loves his two beautiful daughters, he has produced three strong sons!
The baby is adorable.
I want to be a Momma Panda. I could lay all day with my precious bundle and have my meals brought to me. Bai Yun is such a wonderful mother.
And Penny, perhaps after Bai retires you could get the Panda Momma of the year title too.
It would be an honor!
I love the Panda web cam. You have made it possible for us home-bound folks to “go” to the zoo. This has brightened my days and made my life a little better. Thank you so much!
how perfect can bai and gao be, three girls and three boys..
welcome new prince, grow strong and enjoy great health.
again, congratulations to the entire san diego zoo, and the great gao man and our beautiful perfect mother bai.
hugs to the bears,
joan
A group of Aunties and Unkas will be forming up after hours at the SDZoo to deliver those hugs to the bears personally for you. Panda wishes are all granted on Bai’s Beardays.
Yunior will be checking out each participant to make sure they know how to best hug a bear. The line may be long, but will be an all volunteer force so Prince Fluffy Butt wanted to be sure to do his share for the family.
I’m so happy that we have another boy. This balances out with the girls. How many babies have the girls have in total now?? I know they’ve been very successful. How is Mei Sheng doing? Thanks SDZ.
Moderator’s note: Bai’s firstborn, Hua Mei, has had nine cubs, and her second daughter, Su Lin, has had one so far.
And seven of Hua Mei’s cubs have been boys and only two girls. Su Lin’s cub is also a boy. So boys are well represented by the grandcubs.
Congrats to the Gao family!!! Such a sweet little cutie kid!!!
…and congrats to the panda team to learn how to cuddle and keep
baby calm during the exams…..you all are just the best!
Gosh, Bai, what an amazing mom you are. You make the world proud
and happy on a daily basis.
xoxo
He is the most adorable baby i’ve ever seen ( next to my son when he was born of course) the video just melted my heart!! I really felt he was a boy
I think my family and friends think I have officially lost my mind.. i had to tell eveeryone its a boy!! i got some weird looks.. but everyone knows i’m obsessed with animals
thank you for all the amazing updates!!
Angie, I know just what you mean. I’ve “gone to the pandas” and all my friends and family probably think it’s a form of insanity and/or obsession. LOL. Love these cams!!
It IS an insanity and an obsession and none of us are looking for a cure. Welcome to Panda’s Scrambled Brains.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Love love love these black and white bears!
Yay!!! Another Bouncing Boy Cubbie!!!
And I thought it was a girl. Oh well.
Probably the cutest video I have seen of the pandas. This one is sure a cuddle cub.
Moderator: can we submit chubby cubbie names now or do we need to wait?
Moderator’s note: Your chance to submit name suggestions is coming soon. Details to follow!
i watch the panda cam with my girlfriend every night and this little fellow is our first cub. we can’t believe how cute (this is one of the cutest cubs I’ve seen) he is and how quickly he is growing! we are so happy he is doing great. we love the pandas and look forward to every exam! i was devastated with the cubbie in japan, so hearing that this baby is in great shape is just wonderful. I want to visit the SDZ to meet with the keepers and animals, they have both provided me with much joy. keep up the great work. we can never get enough closeups of his little paws and tiny jacket!
Welcome to you and yours to the SDZoo gang of Aunties and Unkas. Are you local to SDZ??? If so will you be helping out with the bear hugging????
Too Exciting!!!! Is there the black spot on the tail, or webbed feet???
He is soooo beautiful!!
Will there be a naming contest again?
Moderator’s note: Yes. Stay tuned.
So happy for Bai and Gao….3 pounds…WOW..I have a rescued dog that is 4 pounds and she is 7 yrs old!
I just watched the exam video, and I must say, the little bruiser had me at his first squawk!!! Such a heart-breaker!!! I can’t wait to watch him growing up to be like his handsome father Gao Gao!
OK! It looks like I have had this cub pegged as a boy since I first found out about him a couple of days after he was born! I’ve been saying he, his, him in my comments alot, so I guess my gut feeling was that this cubbie was going to be a boy. I sure was hoping for another girl, but that’s ok! This little guy is still cute, adorable, and chubby! Weighing 3 pounds!! He is getting alot of mom’s good milk, and that’s a very healthy little boy with a very full stomach!
Just saw mom and baby on the cam a few minutes ago. They were both all snuggled together taking a nice long nap!
Just read that there will probably be voting for a name for the cub. I’m glad! Pick some good ones, you all! When do you think he will be 100 days old?
Back to the cam and also check the NZ panda page to see if there is any new updates about Mei Xiang!
Chari Mercier
St. Pete, FL
Moderator’s note: I believe he will be 100 days on November 5, but his naming ceremony will most likely be the following week. Stay tuned!
How cute is that. First stuffed animal I remember as a child was a panda, they were quite the rarity back then (1940′s).
So happy to finally find out it a bouncing baby boy. All along I thought it was a girl. He sure is growing and Yun Zi has a baby brother.
How cute my grandmother an I are sooo hooked to this cub… Always looking foward to seeing what their up too… We have a few name suggestions… Yin yang, Too cute
am sad that it’s a not a girl but we are still very happy for bai
OMG! Can he get any cuter??
My sister (watching in Hong Kong) and I (watching in The Netherlands) have been faithful followers of Panda mama and baby since the beginning, and we somehow felt that the cub was a boy. It’s nice to have the confirmation!
Love his little squeal at the start of the video. He is UBER adorable!
You folks are doing a fantastic job taking care of the pair. Thanks for the hard work. And super thanks for the 24 hour webcam, with its instant photographing ability.
Welcome from around the world. Will you be flying in for the Bear Hugging, or will you have to skip it this time around????
thanks Jen and Meg for the update. I enjoy seeing the content cubbie during the exam. it even gives me a sense of comfort. nice to know he’s a boy.
That’s fine news! Beautiful boy!
Now we can vote for a boys name soon!!
I suppose we will be given choices from Chinese names again?
I can’t wait to be part of that
Moderator’s note: Yes
I thought for sure he was a she. Oh well, I love him all the same! And we did get a “she” baby elephant, who is adorable!
I am so happy to know he is a boy! I had hoped for one. He is a beautiful cub, with a wonderful mother to care for him. It will be great to watch him grow, and to watch Bai Yun teach him how to be a great Panda. We have lots of fun ahead with this pair.
Helen
This is the very best video yet !!! thank you all so much. I knew it was a boy because on one of the pics he had a masculine face I thought. Now that’s a scientific opinion:-)
Thanks so much for the oppotunity to watch the exam video! What an adorable cub. Looking forward to all that is ahead.
I thought girl, but who cares as long as he is healthy. What a beauty he is, I bet yunnie is excited to have a little brother, so may things to teach him about Panda life. Congratulation to all .
Web Feet?
Moderator’s note: No webbed feet on this cub.
The second and third toes are webbed on Gao Gao’s left hind foot, and so have all of his cubs and cubettes….so far. We are awaiting word to see if this one gets “the Toes” too. If he gets Pappa’s toes and Mamma’s ears (she got hers from the Disney store) then he has the best possible start in a Panda life. Bai wins the Imperial Ears award every year.
Moderator’s note: No webbed feet on this cub.
Are we sure Bai Yun only Dated Gao Gao????? Well maybe he will be the one to get the best set of Mama’s ears.
Maybe he’ll get hairy paws.
Happy 21st Bearday to our beautiful hero mother Bai Yun! I hope your nanny keepers sneak some extra treats in for you today as you celebrate this milestone with your new little boy!
MAMA,
Happy Bearday to You! All of us love you very much and we wish you lots of love and great happiness. May the Panda God bless you for taking care of us all so well. We love you and we send you all our hugs! We think you are the bestest Mama in the world.
LOVE,
Ah Mei, Ah Sheng, Ah Lin, Ah Zhen, Ah Yun and Xiao Liu (Small 6)
Darling Yunnie~~~what a nice greeting from all of you to your mama. Be sure to get yourself ready to check the hugging techniques of all the Aunties and Unkas who will be there later tonight to give bear hugs to all of the Pandas. I know if Mama is busy you will watch over your baby Brudder….Love Grammmie
I have been calling cubby “he” since he was born. LOL He is so adorable and the third exam was priceless. He loves to be cuddled and that back leg scratches as you rub his ears. Love it!
Will be loking forward to the naming contest coming soon.He should be named for rain or mud or I also like the combo of Gao Yun or yum yum–Cuz everytime mama Bai gives him a bath it looks like she is just gonna eat him up.
Hey Babe,
Love ya and waiting for you to come out of the den so we can celebrate in style. Happy Birthday! And you have been an incredible mama to our cubbies, thank you.
Hugs and KIsses,
Your little huggy wuggy GG
LOVE IT!!
Great news about the cubbie. Welcome little boy. Lovely video of the exam too. Today is Bai Yun’s 21st birthday. Will she be given any treats to celebrate this special day?
I thought it was so cute when his tickle spot was found, by accident, of course. I can’t tell you how much I wish those were my hands, getting to hold that little fattie. He is so cute, they always are. I was hoping for a little squeek, but guess the fingers were magic. Glad he is healthy and growing. Don’t grow too fast though, we like to see you small. Good job, San Diego Zoo. Thanks so much for what you do. I really appreciate everything.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BAI YUN!
Thank you for all your precious gifts of 6 beautiful cubs! I’ve watched you mother your babes since just after Mei Sheng and you have no idea how happy you make your fans just being the wonderful momma bear you are! If I need a lift I know you’re there.
I hope you can take time out of your busy schedule to eat some fruity ice cake and open your gifts because you deserve them … and know you have our love.
Happy Birthday Bai Yun!
Congrats on your bouncy baby boy! (But you already knew that! LOL)
So is it like humans where the father is the one who determines if it’s a boy or girl? Does the father’s age factor in to what they will have? I mean, is there a higher chance of a boy or girl based on age?
Happy 21st Bearday to the Bestest Panda Mommy Ever, Bai Yun!
Happy 21st Birthday Bai. I hope you get special treats today. You sure have give us something special
Wow — Bai is now legal — cocktails all around to celebrate!!
He just wants to be cuddled! (And I volunteer to help with that)
Love the little foot going like a puppy’s when he’s being skritched.
My first panda baby….now addicted…so sweet and mama so great….have so much admiration for the care givers…and so jealous! Thank you so much for giving all of us this wonderful experience.
Mine, too, Linda! See my comment earlier today to Angie ………. addiction covers it quite well!
Oh my gosh. He is just too cute for words. What a sweetie. Wonderful job Bai Yun and San Diego Zoo staff! I can’t wait to see the beautiful, cute, ‘Little One’ grow and see all of his antics. Thanks so much for sharing.
Happy 21st Birthday Bai Yun! You are a special Mom. Enjoy your Birthday with your little boy.
Mama Bai Yun is unable to celebrate her 21st birthday because she is busy with her little boy. Therefore, I thought it would be fun to see a video of Bai Yun celebrating her 20th birthday last year.
Here’s the link:

Mama Bai Yun having a wonderful play time before her 20th Birthday Party begins. This is lots of fun to watch.

I’m relatively new to the cam community. Thanks so much for posting this link. Bai was sure queen crazy bear in this video. It looks like she was just having the time of her life.
Happy Birthday Bai Yun!
Happy Birthday, Bai Yun! What a great contribution to have made to panda conservation. It has been so much fun following you and your cubs as they grow and mature.
May you have many more.
Dear Grandma Bai,
Both mommy and I and all my brothers and sister want to wish you the very happiest of birthdays and hope you have lots more. We’re also “over the moon” about our new uncle.
Love and lots of hugs and kisses,
Your granddaughter Hao Hao
Just watched the exam video again…the baby boy sure likes being massaged by all those women! I wonder if they teach massaging in Vet school or must come naturally! The baby is so cute I would massage him too!
Happy Birthday, Bai Yun! I love that we have the same birthday (except I am A LOT older than you!).
Rejoicing that you have given birth to another cub this year. He is just incredibly cute and sweet looking like your other babies.
Moderator’s note: Happy birthday, Liz! You’ve got quite a birthday buddy
i have guessed right every time they have had a cub
Happy Birthday dear Bai Yun!
Happy Birthday Bai Yun your cub is so cute just like the rest of your family !!
I couldn’t tell from the video if there was any sign of his eyes opening yet.Should start soon ,right?
Moderator’s note: Yes, at 40 to 50 days, so he’s right in there at 40 days today.
I’m so excited it’s a boy, and yes I’ve been singing the Brady Bunch song too only with a Panda theme. hehe Congratulations San Diego Zoo and Panda lovers everywhere. We have another boy!!!
Happy Birthday, Wonder Mom! (Bai Yun)
and I agree that the panda cam is giving so many the rare opportunity to enjoy watching a cubbie develop from “butterstick” to a bouncing playful little furball! THANKS so much, all of you at SDZ!
I loved it, in the video, when you held him right towards the camera … and love all the touches, rubbies and skritches ……… I really think this little guy knows he’s adored ALREADY!
Happy Bearday Dear Bai Yun. Were I anywhere near 21 again I would request champagne to be served tonight. Remeber the Aunties and Unkas will be coming later tonight to deliver Hugs to all of the Panda Bears. No need to worry about confusion, there will be lots…..Yunior will be checkng the Hoomans for hugability, and organizing them for least wait, and more great Bear Hugs. He will also watch over CC so you can enjoy yourself. Be prepared~everybody will want a monment of your time so they can say “I got to wish the most beautiful Panda in the world a Happy 21st Bearday, and give Bear Hugs to our favorite Panda Family….Love Graammmie
So Comfy! MAma went for a break but baby is very calm and kind of sleepy. He is a girl. you will see. Takes many months to make a real decision and she hs not been here many months. What a little tyke she is. And adorable and sweettempered now. Not so stormy in temperatment. Mama gets anxious though. Why? Looking forward to baby girl’s zooming ahead like Zhennie.
Moderator’s note: Be sure to read our newest panda post, virginia. You’re in for a surprise
The cub was just so pretty, I thought it *had* to be a girl. No matter, we’re STILL naming him after Gao Gao! Gotta brush up on my Chinese to come up with something really good. And by the looks of things, this little fellow is *totally* getting into all the petting and belly-rubs and stroking and other friendlinesses–he seemed quite pleased at all the star treatment (wish it was MY hand he’d snuggled into). Keep it up, I’m sure he’d say so! Big Smiles, all, and thank you.
Big Cloud (Tai Yun) is my current nickname for cubbie. he is so quiet during exams that it is hard to tell whether he is sleeping. during the exam, he was described as having ears just starting to open. is it known whether he could hear himself up until now with his ears closed? it seems like Bai Yun communicates mostly through touching and cubbie communicates verbally.
Hehehehe! I just adore that little whipering, mewling noise he makes
Love your updates! Love that little panda!
Oh, my – he looks so comfortable during the exam. I had to think that with the way Bai Yun grooms him, spins him, bites him, etc., maybe this human touch is VERY comforting to him. Couldn’t help wishing that those were MY hands providing that comfort. At any rate, what a lovely video of our little boy’s latest exam. You all are doing such a wonderful job — kudos all around. Sigh… how I envy you.
Keep up the good work! Can’t wait for the day this adorable one makes his debut!
Yay!!!!! Congrats to Bai Yun and Gao Gao and their other kids! Now it’s the SDZ panda Brady Bunch….:-) So wonderful and Bai Yun is such a great mummy! Happy birthday to her too!
What a life being a little chubby panda cub. I knew it’d be a boy, the way it laps up the female attention. Bai yun and baby provide hours of entertainment. Looking forward to the next examination and those oh so cute close ups!!
Here’s the story of a lovely Panda,
Who brought up three very lovely panda girls.
All of them had fur of black & white, like their mother,
And Bai Yun loved them one and all…
Gao Gao the Panda, was their father,
Who had three boys, the youngest yet so small.
They loved eating bamboo, biscuits & lots of climbing,
And sleeping all day long.
Then one day the two met at the howdy gate,
And they knew it was much more than a hunch,
That this group, would somehow form a family.
That’s the way we all became the Panda Bunch.
The Panda Bunch, the Panda Bunch,
That’s the way we became the Panda Bunch.
A boy! Great news. Perhaps the new cubbie is small as he is going to take after his father Gao who is smaller than Bai!
Once again Gao and Bai produced a stunning, beautiful cub.
My thoughts, exactly
Question: In other videos I view of Pandas, such as in other zoos or in china, they are able to have more than one panda in an enclosure for companionship, why is the family at SDZ kept apart? And i notice everyone wheres gloves and surgical masks, is this to protect the pandas, or the people?
Moderator’s note: Adult pandas are solitary creatures; we keep them apart as they would be in the wild. Our adult pair did not grow up together and would not appreciate having to share their space and food. As for the gloves, they help protect the little one from possible germs.
thank you for the response, it helps me to understand and learn.
I will hopefully be corrected if wrong, but it is also my understanding that if a pair are raised together they tend to treat each other like brother and sister, and not mate. There are always exceptions. A pair in Germany or Vienna~my mind will not grasp the right one just yet, were raised together because of space problelms. They have had 2 babies, and during the early months of the cub’s life are able to share time together away from the cub. They had their second boy 2 years after their first boy, but have to send them back to China earlier than most because of lack of space, if she gets “with cub” as soon as weaning is over. The cub and father never meet except at the “Howdy Gate”. The young Pandas in groups playing are ususally under 3 years of age. Because of the care they get many twin sets survive in captivity, so there are more Pandas to go around. I am not sure of the policy changed lately, but to increase the captive population before it was too late the cubs went into “Nursery” or “Kindergaten” care, and it is fun watching the videos of them playing. Even Cubs returning to China from other parts of the world are housed 2 or 3 in an enclosure until about 3 years of age, when the play fights, and bamboo wrestling are more serious and could cause injury. The people who write the blog, and the fans who comment all help each other if they can, so ask any questions you want to, somebody will answer. In between you will find the real nuts that write stories and such about the Pandas~giving them “personalities” (I personally love all of them)and other times you will find things that once known will help you tell who some Pandas are. Like our Gao Gao with 2/3rds of his left ear missing. (Not a lover’s spat, but how he was found as a youngster.) Bai Yun seems to have bought her ears from the Disney store, since hers are the most Mickey Mouse looking ever. If you see ZZ she will be moving most of the time unless hanging upside down from a tree branch by her toes. Then there is Su Lin~She rearranges her enclosures often, felling branches, or entire trees until she is satisfied, for a day or so anyway. The other two members of this family I have only observed in Photographs. If you go to Rita Petita’s Flickr page you will find photos of this family all the way back to Hau Mei. She has been devoted to this family of Pandas for many years and is an excellent photographer. She is by no means the only one, but is my favorite.

Doxiemom tries to give us a video every day, and a few others may post videos from time to time…enjoy them if you have the time.

I hope you hang around lng enough to really get to know us….Love Grammmie
Grammmie,
Thank you so much for all the informative info, it all will help me understand these beautiful bears and to recognize them as well. I have no intention of going anywhere, I am hooked. I do enjoy going to u tube and seeing other pandas in other places, the little ones playing bring such a big smile to my face. Can’t wait to see this little cubbie out with momma. Hopefully they will let us see bai with her little one as he grows. Thank you again, and I will probably have a million more questions. Be patient with me.
Doug
It is what we are here for. We love Pandas and Panda Lovers.
All the cubs have been cute but this one seems to cuddle and is so relaxed. Loved it when he moved his back paw when having his neck rubbed. Does/did each one of the cubs have a distinct personality?
Can you hear him saying “ALL RIGHT mom, enough with the bath!!” It is so charming how she twirls him around – like corn on a cob.
Love the expression “twirls him around like corn on the cob”. Hee Hee
Is the mom doing okay? Do you examine her as well, she did’nt seem to look so good earlier. worried.
Moderator’s note: Our Panda Team keeps a close eye on Bai Yun. She is fine.
Bai Yun is such a good mom! She is so careful and tender with her little baby. I bet she is one of the most successful panda moms in this country.
I haven’t written in a long time. OMG I love Bai’s & Gao’s new baby boy. It brings me back of the days of my first Panda experience with Yun Zi. Bai is such a good Mommy. I find her to be a “cuddly” Momma with this cub. Maybe she knows it might be her last cub(?). It just seems different than it was with Yunior. Does anyone else see that or am I just thinking that. This is only my 2nd experience watching a cub be born & it so amazing to see the dynamic of how Bao has interacted with these 2 cubs. Well SDZ, DoxieMom & Rita thanks for all you do to keep me as well as others posted on these wonderful bears. My heart only follows these ones. Cannot follow the others as closely. <3
It’s a boy? I would totally call him Po like the Kung Fu Panda
Already been done–the panda cub born at Zoo Atlanta Nov.3rd 2010 was named Po. Jack Black even made an appearance at the naming ceremony. Cheers!
And in Kung Fu Panda 2 Could you see that it was Yun Zi that played him as a baby??? The moves and things he did were pure Yunior.
How can anything be this cute!!! I have to replay this a hundred times. Too precious.
The Panda Cam is the neatest thing ever! I can’t stop watching. (How am I supposed to get any work done?!!) I love watching Bai Yun interact with her adorable baby boy.

Someone mentioned the name Gao Xing for the newest cubbie. I think that is a delightful name. It means Happy. This newest Baby seems to make Bai so so happy. So how are they going to pick a name for this newest cub? The way they did Yun ZI was quite nice 3 years ago. Will Yunior & this newest cub ever meet? Just curious.
Moderator’s note: Most likely not.
Dawn they will meet and have adventrures~~~Via the stories and notes given to us in the commenet section of the blog.
When will the cub be old enough to exit the den? I’m visiting San Diego in early October. I know it’s early but I was really looking forward to seeing him! I’ve been watching the Panda Cam for well over a year now and like most people, I’ve fallen in love. I’m so excited to see them up close and seeing the cub would make the trip unforgettable!
Moderator’s note: He won’t be ready for his public debut until at least December. But Gao Gao and Yun Zi are ready to greet you!
Hi, where can I find an application to have my chinese friends send baby names?
Thank you!
Moderator’s note: We’ll be posting info about the naming process later today. Be sure to check back!
