As Bai Yun and her cub continue to do well, staff at the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station have slowly begun to emerge from the constant efforts of watching over the den activities to return to tasks put aside during the crucial early postpartum period. I’ve been reading through some of your comments and questions and thought I could offer some feedback.
Regarding the repeated questions regarding Bai Yun’s age, her health, and her behavior with this cub: Bai Yun is doing just fine! She has been resting a lot, which is entirely normal at this stage postpartum. If this is your first panda cub, I encourage you to read through our blog archives and see that sluggishness on the part of momma bear is de rigueur at this stage. Pandas are bears, after all, and many bears experience months of fasting and rest coupled with the birth and early postpartum rearing of their young (see Pandas, Bears, and Pregnancy).
There have been some really good scientific papers written on the magnificent ability of female bears to lactate and care for their young without eating for long periods, noting that very little muscle wastage is evident despite these energetically costly events. Please don’t worry about Bai Yun. She is built for this, and she is taking good care of herself as well as of her cub. We are very pleased with their progress so far.
As an aside: you can see the activities in the den well, but you can’t see what Bai Yun is doing when she leaves the den. She has been getting regular drinks since day 1 postpartum. She has even been observed feeding on occasion. Although she isn’t consuming much yet, she has spent a little time feeding on bamboo and even snacked on biscuits. Her appetite will come back much faster than those cold-weather hibernators, but it is a gradual process. She is making expected changes to her intake every few days.
A few of you noted that the camera has been showing fewer close ups lately. We’ve started to add our other responsibilities into our day, and so when we do leave the monitoring room, we zoom out so the whole den is visible. I’ve noted that some of you are quick to record snippets of video when there is a nice, tight zoom on the cub. Keep sharing your videos with each other so that everyone can benefit from those close ups!
As to the heat in the area: yes, it’s been blazingly hot and humid in San Diego in the last week. But, as our moderator indicated, there is air conditioning in the bedroom area that opens to the den. This air is set to a constant temperature and can filter into the den. Even so, it can get hot in those mountains of China in the summertime; I recall a very sweaty walk up to George Schaller’s former research base in Wolong one summer afternoon. It was baking. The upshot is that these bears can handle a little heat, and Bai Yun has been very comfortable.
We still haven’t had the opportunity to take the new cub out of the den for its first exam. Bai Yun has been leaving the den, though not yet for the long periods we need to see before cub exams begin. That could change at any moment, based upon her needs, so stay tuned! Until that first cub exam, we won’t have a way to determine the gender of this youngster.

thanks for the update Suzanne. I’ll bet as much as you all love your jobs, it must be hard to tear yourselves away from watching the new cub as it is for us
hi! excuseme if this question sound funny… my bigest dream is to get the nearest i can to a giant panda.. i know about the exhibits… if i were to como to the zoo will i ever me able to touch one???
that will make my only land imposible life dream como true.. is it posible to hold touch atleast for an instant?????
Moderator’s note: It would be fun to touch a panda, Erikak, but we don’t offer that opportunity here. We treat our pandas like the wild bears that they are.
Good to know that you all are returning to your other tasks. What a great indication that all is well. We’ll be awaiting that chance for a first exam right along with you!
Suzanne: Thanks for all the encouraging words about the condition of Bai Yun and her cub. From what I’ve seen so far, it certainly seems as if both are doing well. I’m really looking forward to the day you can get a quick exam done on the cub so we can all know if we’re talking about a he or a she.
Meanwhile, I’ll just enjoy all those nice shots of Bai and Baby Bear — DoxieMom has been a great source of those close-up shots. How wonderful those are to view…
just wondering how old the cub will be before mum leaves it longer and longer? been amazing watching this little cutie develop inbetween my love affair with tian tian and yang guang at edinburgh zoo
Thank you for taking the time to up date us.
Oh my goodness…the cub is soooo cute! I am guessing female. Not sure why, just am. Busy little thing! And so adorable! Bai is an amazing mother. I watch her gently hold, nurse and wash her baby with those big paws, so gentle and balletic for her baby!
Thank you for answering the panda fans’ questions and reassuring us all that Bai and her cub are doing well and everything is proceeding normally. I think we are all concerned for Bai because of her age, but she’s obviously not letting the fact that she’ll be 21 years old in a few weeks get in the way of doing her usual incredible mothering job! She’s just a wonder to behold, bless her heart.
As always, Suzanne, you are a wealth of information. Thank you. While Tai Shan was my first cub, I worry every time (until I’m told not to!); it’s my job. Bai is a fabulous mother.
And I appreciate the videos and pics posted by our friends here. Very, very much appreciate it.
Just wondering, is there another mammal species who works harder for the survival of their young?
I would think that is hard to tell, since sometimes they work hard at different tasks. Pandas seem to be breeding challenges both in the wild and in captivity, other speicie put their work into having hundreds of babie each time they breed so that a few can survive.
Everything is relative~like some of us have to work at our relatives harder than others????
Thank you for the close up of the cub (5:15 pst). He’s the spitting image of Gao!
I ready lucked out today!!!! Right when I turned on the Panda Cam there was the baby by himself. His colors are truly showing. His tummy is still very round.
Thanks you SDZ for all your care.
We are so blessed to witness this amazing event. I am amazed at how fast things are happening. Thank you moderator and panda keepers, you are all angels!!!
The cub is getting so strong, I just watched it roll from its side to its stomach. It’s so beautiful
Thank you for the update. How often do you have to clean Bai’s den? I assume Bai does not urinate in the den? How does Bai keep from getting dehydrated as she is only drinking water once a day?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun takes care of all the den-cleaning duties. She goes outside to do her business and get a drink of water or bit of food.
Thank you very much for the update; even tho I figured things were well, it’s nice to hear it officially. And the cub looks really, really super good. Thanks again!
How much time does Bai Yun need to be able to leave the cub before you can do the first exam?
Moderator’s note: At least 10 minutes.
Do the mothers get some nourishment, like black bears I believe, from cleaning up the cubs excrement? Sounds gross to humans but even our urine is sterile.
ok, so we’ll stop worrying about Bai Yun, as always she’s a spectacular mother, saw little one alone for awhile, great to see the cub so strong. Wow, can Momma juggle the baby around to get it right where she want it. What an experienced mother she is to handle something so small and fragile with such tenderness.
Way to go Bai Yun.
How is Yun Zi and Pappa doing? Miss seeing them.
Thank you for the video with the sound track! Quite amazing to both see and hear. It’s been a treat all the way back to Hua Mei.
Thank you guys, and special thanks for reminding folks to read the comment area. They may have a question that somebody knows the answer to~saving precious time for the panda team. We do try to help each other here, and never try to give incorrect information~but we will be offered correction if need be. We also have fun here having dialoges and writings for and with the Pandas. Most of us enjoy them immensly, but if you don’t no one will mind if you skip them. We also give each other links to areas of photos, videos, blogs etc. Just rememeber if you want to use one that under most circumstances you must not give a full link here….there are rules sited just above this commment making section. It is only a short read but very informative. If you do want to leave a link and are unsure of which rules apply simply give it as sandiegozoo (dot) org rather than sandiegozoo.org To use the link that says (dot) in it simply remove (dot) and replace with a normal period or whatever symbol was used to “break” it. We hope to meet lots of you here….but if all you want to do is read quietly we will try to make sure the party does not spill over on to you…Love Grammmie
Thank you all so much for the wonderful hi definition cam. Even though I have watched every cub since Zhen Zhen was born, and also the cubs at Zoo Atlanta, this is the first time when I feel like I’m getting a true window into this early stage of cub development The cam is the best! (And so are you panda keepers)
Thank You, Suzanne for the update- I love watching the pandas, and anxious to watch the first exam. I adopted a Panda from the San Diego Zoo a few years back- I know she’s not there anymore, but have her adoption picture right above my computer- her name is Hua Mei. I never have seen a Panda in person but I do hope I will be able to some day.
Moderator’s note: You’d be proud of your adopted panda, Rita P., as she’s had nine cubs over the years!
Rita~~~she had her 9th cub exactly one week after her mother Bai Yun had our new Chubbie Cubbie. She had 3 sets of surviving twins in 3 years, and one of them is being given to the other part of China as part of peace gesture, of a male and female pair~unrelated to each other. I have not use the correct terminology but as we get older sometimes the correct word eludes us. I find it easier to get the point across by another route~than to punish my brain tryng for the word that willl assert itself about 3 a. m. It can be a bit inconvenient, but better than trying to snap my arthrittic fingers. Love Grammmie
Thank you Suzanne for your answers to our questions. Also, the references to previous postings.
I was forunate and saw BaiYun take a needed break at 5:15ish today. The cub is really looking well cared for. Strong, round and the coloring is really coming in. Am anxiously waiting for the first exam.
Can you please define “blazingly hot”? Some of us have been dealing with 100+ temperatures and find highs barely over 80 to be warm. What is “blazingly hot” to a panda?
We recently experienced the hottest day of the year so far in San Diego, along with humidity, so it was blazingly hot to me… but I meant the term as relative to people. And everything is indeed relative. What’s blazingly hot to a San Diegan is probably nice weather to someone from Phoenix
Indeed.
I just wasn’t sure if there is an “ideal” temperature range for pandas, but it sounds like they are able to handle extreme weather rather. Either way, I’m glad to hear Momma and baby are doing well and that you all are able to get back to some normal duties!
Thank you for the great, and reassuring, update, Suzanne! So good to know that all is well with our beloved Bai and cubbie and that the SDZ team is confident and happy with all that is happening. It is a joy to watch Bai Yun with another beautiful cub. Thanks for all you and your team do to take care of these awesome bears, and, at the same time, share so much valuable information with us avid watchers!
Thank you so much for all your hard work. I remember Bai’s last baby she spent forever in the den it sure seemed. It seemed the cub was much bigger before they got to examine him. I was trying to think of Gao’s record on what gender this baby will be…he has produced 2 females and 2 males from what I remember. Since the last baby was a boy hope this one is a girl..but either way…the cub will be wonderful. I love Bai’s paws…they look soft but they probably arent….and when she taps her paw it is so cute. Doxie Mom and others thanks for the great videos!
Yes Jodi Gao is 2 of each for 4, but Bai had a female with first hubby Shi Shi. For Bai to have an even split she nees one more boy~~~then her 6 will be 3 and 3. Lets face it-there is no way to make us all happy so lets just have a boy named for Gao Gao~~~Then you know I will be walking on clouds. Love Grammmie
I was just thinking that the male provides the gender of the cubbie as in humans..so since Gao Gao is even..wondering what sex this baby will be! I am not certain that Panda male passes the gender gene as in humans.
That is a good one I have never run into before~Does anyone know if the male mammals always determine sex in offsrping, or is that only in “non~litterd” mammals even though Panda Twins are common~that is due to her configuration. Just when does class begin?? I may be 66 but still have a lot to learn!!!
Thank you Suzanne and greetings from Australia This is now my second cubbie and I feel a little more experienced. LOL It is such a joy to watch Bai Yun with her baby and thanks to you and all of the staff for your updates. It is great to see some famiiar names in the blogs – takes me back to 2009. I predict a female cub – so can’t wait for the first trip out of the den – then we hear the cub. Remember the first time Yun Zi “barked”. Just to let you know we are hoping that love is in the air for Wang Wang and FuNi and we will have a successful mating in the next few weeks. Adelaide Zoo is really hoping for their first cub soon.
Fingers crossed for your pair. Keep us posted on how it goes.
thanks for the up date, every time I see mama face she always had a smile, I know it is the shape of her jaw and etc, but does look a smile. That baby has really grown since the first picture I saw. They grow fast. the staff there is great and all the love you give these panda’s. you are great.
lu fr sacto
I think it’s simply amazing that Bai Yun mothers this baby as well as she does. She provides everything for this cub and does it exceedingly well. Can’t wait for the video of the first exam. Do the doc’s pick straws for this?
That would not be allowed~~but a good bribe couldn’t hurt~could it???? Love Grammie
Thank you for the update Suzanne. I am happy that Bai Yun is taking care of herself as well as her baby cub. She is such a good mama.
Saw the itty bitty again. She is so chubby! Like all of Bai’s babies I think. How dazzlling she is.Spelling? Before bed time, oh well. Oh my, yes she is something wonderfful and just a touch of black hair(shrug jacket) and her ears. imagine her and what names we can give her. I am so thrilled for all of you!!
I read that we can post pictures? This is a test. If this doesn’t work, can you please advise or a site that can help us to post pics.
Thank you for the updates!
Moderator’s note: No photos here, but the San Diego Zoo participates in numerous social media sites where readers can share photos, including Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, and Pinterest. Hope this helps!
When Mom is bent over and the white of her back is shown is she nursing?
Moderator’s note: Usually.
9:10mpm.baby is popped out of Bai’s arm and yawning.Vig and talkative. How cute she is!! She was pretty hot within Bai’s paws and face so she just too a little airing . Not fussy. AHHHHH Just the sweetest.
9:16. Bai moved but the baby just moved too. Yawned and lay with her whole body withing the circle of Bais arm and yet still outside it. Too cute, and Bai fussed but not excited.
Well, I about to ask if the 24/7 watch was done..thanks for the update and answering the concerns of some… Bai and her cub (somebody mentioned “Rainbow” …love it are fine
It has been quite a while since I have posted to this forum. I have watched three cubs at San Diego Zoo be born and grow up. I was so happy to hear we have a new little one and he/she is doing great! Does anyone know the status of any other cub possibilities at other zoos in the US? It has been some time since there has been any other Giant Panda cub births? Have there been any that didn’t materialize in this year?
Po at Zoo Atlanta was born Nov 2010, so they decided to wait until next year to breed mama Lun Lun again. National Zoo in DC performed AI in the spring and is hoping for their second cub in the next few months. Both zoos have panda blogs, so it’s easy to stay up-to-date with them!
Hi Auntie Laura,
I think ZA wants Auntie Lunnie to decide when to wean Wee Po. Right now he is a whopping 100 lbs. He is nursing twice a day and is loving it. Of course, we’d love Uncle Yang Yang and Auntie Lunnie to have another cubby. The more the merrier.
Panda Hugs,
Yunnie
Excellent update Suzanne. Reassured us all and just reminded us that “Bai Knows best”. Like everyone I am looking forward to the first vets examination. Well done all at SDZ.
Thanks for the update- great to see the cubbie!
Just as I said in an earlier post, it’s almost impossible NOT to catch a glimpse of the cub now. It has become too big now for Bai to keep it tucked away and out of sight. It’s obvious that Bai is producing some incredible rich milk just as she has in the past. Not too much longer now and they will be able to examine that little snug bug. If I were a keeper, I would be beside myself with excitement.
Just a reminder, even after the first exam, we may not know the sex of the baby. Sometimes they just can’t tell yet. I wanted to prepare those who are new on the scene, we may still be guessing for a while.
Unless it’s obviously a boy, it’s hard to know for certain. Remember Su Lin from Atlanta? For years, we all thought he was a she. (I still have problems remembering to use the right pronoun.) But I know all the nanny keepers will do their best to keep us informed.
Moderator’s note: That was Mei Lan, not Su Lin. And yes, sometimes it takes a bit longer to determine he or she-ness!
The first Su Lin, brought to the U. S. from China by Ruth Harkness in the 1930′s, was thought to be female. After the panda died, it was determined to be a male.
Wow, thanks for the update and info, SDZ! This is my first cub as far as getting to watch ……… so much I don’t know, but I’m learning SO much from your updates as well as all of the wonderful contributors to this blog!
This is such an exciting thing to “take part in” … watching the pandas is my little form of therapy, I believe, and I have 3 cams on throughout my work day … and the SDZ one is on at home every evening and thru the weekend! You’re on my phone, too!
Can’t wait to see if YZ has a baby sister or baby brother! and mommy BY is so beautiful, patient, and tender. LOVE this cam and blog!
I have always thought of these cams as a natural blood pressure reducer.
Problems with the cam again????
Moderator’s note: Not at the moment. Are you still having problems viewing it?
Thanks Suzanne for the wonderful updates. I can see the tongue of the little one, so cute.
Thaqnks Suzanne for taking the time to write this. Everything is going perfectly and the cub is growing in leaps and bounds. In honour of the new birth and my daughters upcoming wedding I adopted a panda (this one, in my mind). I know the money goes to such wonderful things like enrichment items and you will be needing lots of them in the upcoming months. Just a little way that I can feel like I am helping.
Moderator’s note: Thank you, Lee, and best wishes for your daughter’s wedding!
Watched the cubbie this morning for about 4 minutes on its own. He/She looks like it is gaining weight daily and seemed to be content wating for Mama to return.
Can’t wait until we know if it is a girl or a boy but my money is on girl this time!
Thank you Suzanne for the update. It has been so much fun watching Mama Bai love and care for her sweet cub. I can’t wait to see the keeper carrying the cub in for its first exam. I’m betting that this little cutie is a boy. My best wishes to Bai and her cub for a perfect first exam.
Rose I am delighted to to hear it for the boys~~~I was afraid I was alone. It is beginning to sound to me like more of Bai’s daughters may not get a chance to reproduce since her father Pan Pan was so good at his job with so many wives then Bai and only her first daughter have added on 15 more of the line. They have to keep diversified for the captive population to keep on having cubs that will be abe to someday be released back into the wild. It would be a good thing to have those strong genes going~but only enough to keep the species strong.
Thank you Suzanne for the positive update on Bai Yun and her darling 6th cub. Also thank you for encouraging video sharing. There were quite a few close ups throughout the day Wednesday and if you missed any of them here are the highlights:
2012-08-15 Cubbie Closeups ~ Day 17
http://youtu.be/DuocWJ3Ab9M
That is so beautiful, I’ll watch it again and again. Thank you for that!
DM, I haven’t told you in too long. YOU ROCK!
Thank you so much for the lovely video. The baby is getting so strong. What would we do without your dedication? Please carry on the good job!
what great views, thanks DoxieMom. Boy, the little one is getting strong, won’t be long and the cub will be moving all over the place.
Great video, thank you~~~I see Bai is now demonstrating to the baby how a Mommy Panda bites the head off of dissobediant Chubbie Cubbies. She showed the move several times. I do not remember Yun Zi getting this instruction so early, but then when he started being a pest he was the best pest at SDZ.
Looks like our cubby is already practicing the cub exercise routine that we’ve seen in other babies.
Great to see DoxieMom again! Well, she has been around all along, it is me who has been on and off the forum. Thanks for all you do in providing us with wonderful videos!
Thank you so much for posting the video – what a delight!
~Vickie~
That little cub is going to be very active as s/he is already showing. I’m hoping that the cub is a little girl.
Thank you, again, Suzanne. I have a question.
We started watching the panda cam when Yunior was 20 days old and were enthralled with Bai Yun’s maternal skills. ( One of our favorite techniques was one DoxieMom just caught on video she called “4 paw juggling act” and we call Bai’s spin cycle.”)
In the early days for Baiby 6, I’ve noticed Bai Yun sleeping in positions that seem unusually contracted. For example, she leans forward with the top of her head on the den floor. Is it correct to assume this is to keep the cub warm? I also noticed her moving her head to the side the cub is on when nursing as if to complete that warm furry cocoon. We noticed tapping with her back foot 3 yrs ago but the patting with a front paw we’ve seen this time is just so sweet.
It’s been plenty warm, and the cub is gaining body fat and fur to aid in keeping it warm. I think at this stage of the game any contortions you see from Bai Yun are just efforts to get comfortable. Even without a cub, pandas can get into some pretty pretzel-like positions while resting that we can only scratch our head at.
It looks like we are already seeing the Panda Twirl as properly executed by Bai Yun on the new cubbie. I don’t think I ever saw Lun Lun do this with Po.
The details about Bai Yun’s eating makes sense. As someone who has done a fast before, coming off the fast is tricky, food has to be gradually reintroduced and if done too quickly, it creates a lot of discomfort. So she is doing what is right for her well being. After all, she did write the book on being the ulitimate Panda Mom.
So other bears (polar, brown and black) have cubs that are as tiny as a panda cubs and in need of the same intensive care? If so, wow…I had no idea. Thanks.
Panda cubs are the most altricial of all bear cubs. That said, yes: all bear cubs are born tiny relative to maternal size, and quite helpless.
Suzanne I need to go back to school what does altricial mean??? Thank you.
Thank you, Suzanne, for teaching me a new word — altricial.
altricial: Hatched or born in an undeveloped state and requiring care and feeding by the parents
So, humans are altricial, too,then.
Is that Bai Yun or her baby ‘snoring?’ Sweet little raspy sounds. Great video … thanks for posting it!
Could you please tell me why we can’t hear sound of the baby, but yet
it is recorded on your videos ? I just love to hear the baby talk !
Thank you for the valuable time you take to answer all our questions.
Moderator’s note: Our Panda Cam is not configured to stream sound. The videos we post are taken from the researchers’ video files, where sound is available.
thanks for responding to the concerns about Bai Yun.
this is my first time watching Bai Yun following a pregnancy (been watching a couple weeks). I’m curious, is her position where she’s kind of balanced between sitting on her haunches and leaning forward with her head on the ground… is this a unique position she reserves just for protecting the baby? or does she ever rest like this when she’s without a baby too? it doesn’t look very comfortable.
I see Bai licking the baby a lot. Is that to stimulate it to urinate?
Moderator’s note: We know that pandas facilitate elimination by licking their cub’s posterior.
Often it is to stimulate the cub’s urination, but sometimes it is merely to soothe the cub when it is fussing.
Just an observation: Bai seemed actually board when we’ve visited her in person. Her look told me she knew she was super panda and that she knew we were in awe of her. When she looks at her cubbie, she is totally engaged. She’s focused, determined, protective, yet loving, gentle and tender. She knows that she is 100% the world to the cubbie, and her only mission in life to is take care of him/her.
Why Bai, can’t you look at me that way?
Have you read THE SELFISH GENE?
The Selfish Game? Will it tell me how to look at Bai to make her love me??
maybe you can practice your newborn vocalizations before the next visit. I think Bai Yun would not give a bored look. (kidding) if she really believed you, I’m not sure how well you would take to being tucked under her chin and arms.
Good idea! If she tucked me under her chin, I could smell her. That’s my big dream — to smell a panda!
hmm, I would never have thought of smelling a panda. I often would like to scratch their bellies (particularly Gao Gao’s very round belly). but I expect he would look at me vacantly and say, “More bread please.”
you will have to share with us what a panda smells like.
I remember scapping and giffing a scene very similar to the video above when Zhen Zhen was this age.
The bonding of Bai and baby is breathtaking.
I have yet to see cub nursing….is it on the teat when the mother is bent over. Is there a usual position to nurse?
After 12 midnite EDT, 8/17/2012–Was just on the pandacam tonite, and saw Bai’s cub on Bai’s big arm in full view! He’s getting a little bit bigger to where Bai can’t totally hide him too much now, but she’ll try to keep doing that until her cub gets a little bit more bigger! If you all have not noticed this yet, but I think Bai is smiling! She’s a very happy, content momma and loves her job!

We really appreciate you keeping us in the know about Bai Yun. If anything ever had to happen to her I don’t think I would be able to take it!!
But she is a beautiful strong and very knowing, loving and capable bear and if only she knew how famous she is and how much she is loved around the entire world!! Can a human really convey great love that a Panda Bear would appreciate and understand?
xxxx for Bai Yun, the most precious black and white bundle on this earth!
Heather~Bai does not know she is famous, she does not care~she cares to eat, sleep, take care of cubs when she and Gao Gao Dance the Spring Salsa just right, and to be helped through illnesses and pain. These are all things she could probably not have achieved in the wild. To be a grandparent would be rare, she probably has a reasonably good chance of being a greatgrandparent and even more famous than she is now.
Being born into captivity she probably has a few favorite “Hoomans” that she is more familiar with than others and does not even know that her life already is extended beyond what would be expected in the wild. We are going to have to be the ones with pride in her achievements~she is just being herself. None of our Pandas know how cute they are, how much we would all love to be cuddled by~or to cuddle them. The SDZOO does it’s best to not try to make them something they are not, so they can be who they are, and help their species regain a footing where they belong. We here in San Diego are very proud of their lives, rght down to Gao Gao’s Fluffy Furry Sexie Feetsies. And Our Yun Zi and all his brother(s) and sisters too. All of the Pandas are content to be who they are, and we should just be happy for them….Love Grammmie
‘Man, this is the life!’ reflects Yunnie as he reclines in his chair with a root boo float.
His Papa is seated in his armchair with his paws filled with boo corn. Both of them were watching the Beach Volleyball competition in the Pandalympics.
‘Wow, she’s good! Did you see that, Papa?’
‘Heh heh heh, I think she has a smashing good, ahem, form….’ grins Gao Gao.
‘Can we watch diving later?’ asks Yunnie who has dreams of going for gold at the Pandalympics.
‘Son, we pandas were not made to defy gravity. One splat and we empty the pool.’
‘But Papa, the bears from China are pretty good and the lady panda diver has such high scores!’
‘Weelll, there is gymnastics as well and maybe next year Zhen Zhen has a shot of making the team.’
‘Really? WOWEEEE, my sissy an Pandalympian. Papa, can I start my fencing training or maybe I can do equestrian?’
‘Son, the best event is sofa surfing!’
‘Papa! That is not a proper Pandalympic event!’
‘Says who? Trust Papa, it will be.’
‘OK, Papa, pass the boo corn please!’
‘Urp!’
Another wonderful inventive story~I just love them all, short or long…Thank you….Love grammmie
It,s just about 7:45 zoo time and the baby is alone How amazing to watch her pick up her head and try to roll and upright her self. She sure is one strong little girl. The cam operator this morning deserves a gold medal
What an exciting pleasure to watch this baby as he/she is developing. I’ve got 2 computers set to watch. This morning (just now!) was a delight when mama went out for what seemed like longer than usual & little one is actually trying to use it’s legs already! Could you post that vid so I can share it? Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity – my whole family is tuned in & watching the progress. We hope to make it to SD to see this beautiful little baby as soon as it is able to greet the world that loves it so much.
Thursday was another awww-inspiring day in the den watching Bai Yun handle and care for her 18 day old cub. She is an amazing panda mother. For those interested in seeing the highlights, here’s the video:
2012-08-16 Bai Yun tends to Cubbie ~ Day 18
http://youtu.be/9Wx3ICzRYOI
No wonder poor Bai is tired, trying to get comfortable with her squirmy cub
too funny…thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for that incredibly touching compilation, DoxieMom.
This is my first time watching a cub grow and it is truly awe-inspiring to see how much this little one develops every day. Can’t believe the changes every day, and can’t wait for our Edinburgh Pandas to have a little cutie or two for us Brits to love.
SDZ are the gold standard for all zoos to follow with their information on Pandakind – hoping to make a trip there next year.
Cara – you are going to be addicted as the rest of us are!! It is so incredible to watch the development and – BOOM – before you know it “our” little squirmy baby will be out on exhibit and “terrorizing” Mama Bai!! It is really exciting!!
Thankyou so much for this opportunity to watch this great big panda nurture that tiny little baby, so graceful and gentle , such a privilege to see.
Exactly 12 years ago, I followed your panda cam of your first panda, Hua Mei. I viewed panda cam on my laptop everyday for over 3 months in the hospital while recovering from a major car accident. During my 6 month recovery at home I viewed her life story on the VCR (an ancient viewing machine….LOL) over and over again. A year later when I was finally out of my wheelchair, my husband took me to the Zoo to view Hua Mei during her first year celebration. Now exactly 12 years later your six panda is born. Congratulations on all that all of you do for this endangered species. I continue to follow the pandas on panda cam. the panda cam is such an important tool for all of us to view the birth and life of these incredible animals. Today, I am able to walk (albeit slowly)….and I credit some of my recovery on little Hua Mei that gave me so much laughter and fun during my recovery.
Moderator’s note: Thank you for sharing, Debbie! We wish you continued recovery and good health and hope you can come visit our pandas again.
Bai Yun is certainly the best mother in the world. I’ve noticed this morning that she seems to have constructed a tiny bamboo playpen for her baby so that he can barely move around. What a genius!
A question for the panda staff or anyone who knows: When Bai awakes and sits up I’ve seen her scatter some of the bedding around the den. Why does she do this?
???Maybe she’s making the bed
I like the making the bed analogy! Last week I was watching the cam after the zoo had closed and Bai Yun opened her arms while the cub was sleeping on one arm, and it knocked the baby to the nest ground. Bai Yun stood up and started this “making the bed” behavior. I was not able to see if the cub was ok and was afraid the behavior was maybe stress, that a bad thing had happened. Thank goodness all was well, but with the zoo being closed I sometimes think I need a 911 direct line to zoo help! Maybe I’m too sensitive to watch when the zoo is closed? LOL
Perhaps like Fluffing the pillows.
Maybe she’s freshening up the den to make sure that no bad smells are in there! Chari
I started watching Bai Yun a few months. Once I heard the news that she might be expecting, I was completely addicted. Everyday would watch and wait for the baby cub to be born. I got to see from Day1 of this adorable little cub how its life begins. I can never imagine how something so little and fragile can be born to such a big animal. Im an fascinated by Bai Yun being a mom. This is my first time actually watching Day by Day literally being addicted to the computer at work and home. I love watching how fast it grows and the process it makes everyday. Day 18 and this lil has fur and moves around and now is staying in the den alone more. Bai Yun handles her cub like a pro. She is an amazing animal and I love getting the joy of watching her and her cub everyday. I think Im the biggest fan ever! Thank you again!
i swear everytime i go to see this panda night or day she is sleeeping i want to see her when shes not sleeping :/
You need to keep the cam on longer Ashly and you’ll see them awake, or maybe around noon and 6:30 pm Ca time is good. I feel better since Suzanne discussed bear hibernation etc, it makes total sense now how Bai yun can sleep so much. Also the other day I kept my laptop on for 5 hrs after the zoo was closed and she woke every hour for a few minutes and juggled or fed the cub. That would make me very tired, imagine a month of waking every hour for a few minutes. Can’t wait to see the baby play!
Suzanne, bravo! As always, a very detailed update! Those of us who have been around for at least a few of the births aren’t as worried. We all know that momma Bai is the best, most careful, pretty mom there is in these parts…AND has the bestest =0 ) panda team in the world!
p.s. this latest shot of baby is ADORABLE!
Thank you!
p.p.s. Also, the cams for this birth are amazing, zooming in giving us such great views. Wish that was the case when I was watching little Zhennie in her first months, such a difference! I have a million screen shots of a teeny, tiny little speck of a Zhennie! ~^,,^~
I bet Bai Yun is getting her favorite bamboo. There different bamboos are there not? I heard she like one particular type. But then, I guess she gets that all the time … or not? What does she really like as a real treat? I would be great if one of the keepers could answer this?
Wish I could be there too.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop as always, they are the most precious beings on this earth, you are truly blessed to work with them daily
Bai’s treat – apples & when she is pregnant keepers peel them for her !!
Thank you Suzanne for the wonderful update, it has been very much appreciated. I was away for a few days (had no chance to get to a PC) and found after returning that the cubbie has grown soooo much in three/four days, just unbelievable! Her/his markings have become so prominent. I join my fellow bloggers in the excitement of getting to know if the little one is a girl or boy. Hopefully Bai will soon give you an opportunity to examine her cubbie.
Conversation with Bai Yun #36
Cubbie #6: Mama.
Bai Yun: Yes, dear.
C: Would you help me track my x,y,z coordinates?
B: You mean to track your intra den activities?
C: Huh? We’re in a den?
B: Yes. And there’s another world outside.
C: Really?
B: That’s where I get fresh bamboo. And there’s water to drink.
C: Water? What’s that?
B: It’s one of the components of milk.
C: You mix water with milk?
B: In a round about way, yes.
C: I think bamboo smells nice, too.
B: Yes, and it has nice color.
C: But I guess my eyes aren’t open yet.
B: Let’s say I send an order to NewZygote.
C: Huh?
B: Orinoco Mart was out of stock.
C: Oh.
B: We’ll get you a GPS locator.
C: YAY, Mama. Thanks.
(While Bai Yun naps)
C: Hello, Moth Fairy.
M: Hello, Cubbie #6.
C: What do you know about the outside world?
M: You mean outside the den?
C: Yeah.
M: I hear Sir Gao Gao is giving out commemorative tie pins.
C: Huh?
M: He was informed of your birth and wanted to celebrate.
C: Oh.
M: They were embossed with image of you nestled under Mama’s chin…
C: Hee hee.
M: And pandas in love.
Wow! Long interval of the baby flying solo. It scooted from the middle of the nicely framed close-up (thank you!) to the top of the frame. Cute little cotton ball.
Do you have direct access into the den?
Moderator’s note: The keepers can access the den if needed.
I recall seeing strips of some kind of material on the den floor so the cub could get traction when it is not yet walking. Not sure what is on the den floor (textured concrete? Wood?) but this baby needs some traction paper already!
Question: Are the cub’s eyes open yet? I haven’t seen any reference to this unless i missed it.
Moderator’s note: The den floor is made of plywood. The cub’s eyes are not yet open.
Nursing, staying by him/herself, being cuddled by Bai Yun, having a “spin cycle” bath, it’s all in a day for Cubbie #6

http://youtu.be/S36fJuyS5eU
Thank you San Diego Zoo and the Panda Team for allowing us to see this tiny miracle grow and change before our eyes. And thank you to those who are watching the videos ~ much appreciated.
Good grief…Bai has already started the cub on the ” paw twirl” ,,,fun is just starting
Absolutely loved this video!!!!! Sooooooooo sweet.
Today, 8-18-12, on the San Diego Zoo Panda Cam. Bai Yun left the den for a short break. Her break allowed a video of wonderful close-ups of our 20-day-old adorable cub. The cub was very active and a joy to watch. What a sweetheart!
You can find this video at the following link:
http://youtu.be/UY5gw2jJVwc
Wow! Have just had the privilege to watch cubbie alone for over 15 mins (today- Sat) at 11.45am Pacific Time. It looked quite calm, except when it overbalanced, but it was able to turn over again. All the markings are so clearly defined. Thank you SDZ for the brilliant camerawork.1st examination must be very soon, I would think
I just took a few minutes to visit the Elle Cam and saw a large African Elle Flappig it’s ears for all it was worth. It is either trying to beat the heat, or going to do a Fly By to check up on the new Panda Baby so they can report to the Safarai Park about all of he excitement…..Love Grammmie
This was probably in eager anticipation of the birth of Swazi’s calf any day now. All those of us watching the ellies regularly are on pins and needles waiting for the big event, Grammie.
By the way, it is so good to see you back on the Giant Panda Blog so often now. You sound perky as ever!
Thank you. Sometimes my absense is for illness, mine or my computer. I hope to be back for a long time to come….Love Grammmie
My goal: To make a road trip out to SD next spring/early summer, to see all the pandas, including this lovely little new one! Hope we can make it out there! This is all so exciting!
We wll stand by to help with dirctions, weather reports, etc., just call on the locals to misdirect you…Love Grammmie
Seems every time I check on Bai and Baby, they are sleeping. Is this little one calmer than previous babies? Bai seems very relaxed. Love to watch her nursing and looking adoringly at her little one.
Mary: Be sure to check out DoxieMom’s videos (see her post above). I miss so much myself, and every time I see one of her videos on YouTube, I am just amazed at what I see and at how much I miss!!!

I was wondering how can a young guy like me eventually get hands on research with giant pandas
Whoever is on duty tonight ~ around 11:25 pm ~ great close ups of Bai and Baby. Thank you so much for being on the ball and zooming in. Too cute when Bai would scoop the wee one back up under her chin.
I bet Yunior sneaked into the control room to help out…He is a good Panda that way.
Ssssh, Grammmie, please dont tell the nannykeepers, hee hee, otherwise they will spank me.
Conversations between pandas:
Yuni: I just wrote to Zhen Zhen, Su Lin, Mei Zheng, Hua Mei at Bifengxia, China to let them know that Momma Bai has another baby panda cub! My little brother/sister is almost 3 weeks old now, and has the black colors on him/her. Hope to hear from my brothers & sisters real soon!
——-
ZZ: Yuni, got your letter about Momma Bai having her 6th baby panda! WOW!!! Congrats to mom and dad! I bet Daddy Gao is a very happy panda!
Hua Mei: Yuni, you have got to be kidding me! Momma Bai having baby panda #6?? That’s remarkable considering that she’s 21 years old! Well, we all know that nothing will keep momma down for long! She’s a great mom, and we all know that for sure!
Mei Sheng: Well, being the oldest brother, I have to say Congrats to Daddy Gao! He’s a great daddy, and we all love him! Sounds like momma Bai and her new baby are doing real well so far. I’m not a daddy yet, but hope to be soon! thanks for letting me know about momma, little brother!
Su Lin: WOW, Yuni!! Momma Bai has persevered again! My little boy is about a year old now, and he says HI to his Aunt Bai and new baby cousin! Will try to send them a card, but little man has been keeping me busy! Congrats, Momma!!
———-
Mei Lan at Chengdu: Just got an email from my cousin Yuni this last week. He told me about his mom having her 6th baby panda nearly 3 weeks ago. My congrats to my cousin Bai on her new baby! Gonna write to my family in Atlanta to let them know! Momma Lun is still busy raising my little brother, Po. After he leaves his mom, I’m hoping my momma will have another baby panda cub soon! Thanks for letting me know, Yuni!

At National Zoo:
Mei Xiang: Tian Tian, I have heard that our cousin Bai Yun in San diego has had her 6th baby panda cub nearly 3 weeks ago! Isn’t that wonderful? She’s older than me and still able to have babies!
Tian Tian: That’s great!! Mei, just keep having hope and faith that you will have your second baby panda soon! We are all waiting for you to let us know! I have hope for you, too! We should send Cousin Bai a card to congratulate her. Looks like the year of the dragon has been good to the panda families here in the USA and China so far!
Mei: Yeah, I know! I just get anxious, but I will keep hoping and have faith. It should not be too much longer. Goodnite, Tian!
Tian: Goodnite, Mei!

I love it Chari…….most days there are tidbits, links, and stories from the comment section, some of my Pals who do not have time to read everything, would love to know about. I leaving the persosn’s Name, Date, Etc., I let them know that it is from the comment section, hoping they will take some time from something else, if they can, to read it themselves. On the other hand they must bend to my taste, time, and twisted sense of humor too. If I don’t get to read the blog they get nothing. Your e-mail is at the top of the page I will send when I am done today…Love Grammmie
Great close-ups of baby panda on the cam! So adorable trying to climb up! Thanks for letting us see him/her
For those following the daily videos, here is Saturdays. Highlights from this day include Bai Yun leaving the cub for longer periods of time (nearly 15 minutes, and 18 minutes), close ups of a very fuzzy, fluffy cheeked cub with sharp little claws, and Bai Yun’s smooth handling, spinning and manuevering her cub into position using paws, legs, chin and her mouth

Thank You!!!!!!!!!
I apologize if you addressed this before but I obviously missed it. The “walls” of the den – are there removable panels or something, as I swore I saw “fencing” windows? Or I may just be seeing things. Thank you!
It seems like yesterday we were watching Su Lin be so well taken care of by Bai. I will never get over missing her.
The den is made of round, heavy plastic with an entrance for the bear on one side and a secondary access in the back. We have never had reason to open the secondary door while Bai Yun has been in the den with a cub.
There are also two panels in the walls of the den with cameras hidden behind so that we can see side views of the den.
Thank you, Suzanne.
And love the new features.
at yoga today, I found 2 poses that were similar to Bai Yun’s head-sitting pose. child pose and rabbit pose. this cam is so influential that when I observe human activities, I try to liken them to Bai Yun’s behaviors. only slightly backwards I suppose. for the record, rabbit pose is actually not as uncomfortable as it would appear.
So is Bai Yun is just eaching the Chubbie Cubbie Yoga????
I see now that Bai Yun is leaving the den for long periods of time now. When are you going to try and get the first exam in?
Moderator’s note: Perhaps sometime this week!
Thanks to whoever was controlling the camera last night (Sat) at around 11:30pm Pacific. Got some great close-up shots of the cub. Can’t wait for the first exam!
What a treat for the eyes and heart. It is so fun to watch her roll the baby here and there using all her paws and mouth. It’s like a dance … she knows all the moves. What an attentive mom. Thanks DoxieMom for the video.
Got some quick news for you all that I just read on my Facebook page from Pandas International! On August 15, 2012, Momma panda Si Xue gave birth to twins at Bifengxia! As far as I know right now, that’s the third set of twins that have been born there over the last month or so! I don’t know the total count of panda births from Wolong and Bifengxia yet, so I’m hoping that PI will write up a list of the births real soon once they get a good count from their Chinese colleagues. The pic on my Facebook page was one of the Chinese staff people holding both of Si Xue’s twin babies in her hands, and they are sooooo CUTE!!
Still hoping for Mei Xiang to have her second baby panda cub soon. Been watching Bai on the pandacam, and she will show off her baby panda every once in awhile when she moves her big arm out of the way! The cub is looking very good and healthy!

Fingers and toes all crossed for Mei Xiang and the Smithsonian National Zoo team!
Just wanted to wish Mei Sheng a Happy Birthday yesterday, I still miss that smile he always seemed to have on his face. He may not be here but always on our minds. The gate is always open if he wants to come home.
Moderator: What is the new sign on the Panda Cam? Pamzone? Does that mean we will get the postcard feature and the name of the pandas back?
Just checking!!!
Moderator’s note: Panda Cam does have some new features: postcard and expand to full screen!
‘Papa, come quickly, I got in, I managed to hack the SDZ computers,’ grins Yunnie.
Gao Gao lumbers up to the screen. Yunnie was manipulating the images.
‘I managed to get into the cameras in Mama’s den.’
‘Hey, there’s my girl. She is looking beautiful and she’s cradling that cute liddle one!”
‘Papa, look, there’s my…’
‘My baby! Oh so cute.’
‘Papa, Mama has gone off for a drink. Look I am going to do a close up of the baby and I can do a screen grab. YES. Look at my baby sibling….hang in there, Ge Ge will come and play with you one day, hee hee.’
‘Son, son, the nannykeepers are back. I told them I was hungry and they went and got me some cuppy cakes and panna bread.’
‘Half share, Papa?’
‘OK, let’s go.’
And with that the 2 pandas slipped out of their room, giggling all the way.
Good Monday morning ~ loving the close up of Bai Yun snuggling her cub right now.
Here’s the video link for Sunday the cub’s 3 week birthday. Highlights include seeing the cub scoot over some culm, a sweet close up of Bai nursing her cub, and close up of Bai trying to show off her cub’s tummy

Aunties and Unkas,
The postcard function is back so you can make nice postcards of my family again. Now try to get some of my sibling.
Love,
Yun Zi
My Darling Yunior:
You know Grammie does not like to give you bad news, but if your sib is a boy you will still be Prince Royal Fluffy Butt because he will be King Royal Fluffy Butt. There is not way your bottom was ever twice as wide as your shoulders at this young an age. Use the new feature~~and when you have a few photos to compare we will find some I took of you at the same age~this kid has enough bottom for two Pandas don’t you think????
Love Always to you~My first ever Panda baby to see on a computer~~Grammmie
Dear Grammmie,
I think fluffy butts run in the family. My sib has a nice butt and I am so happy he/she takes after me. Can’t wait for the first exam.
Love,
Yunior
Wow! Like the new features on the Web cam. Even better views from inside the den & later outside. Well done again SDZ.
Moderator,
I just noticed that the postcard function has been added. Is ther a way that the logos could be put as a column instead as on a raw, so that we can capture pictures and videos and not have the logos in the way.
Thanks!
Web Team responds: The logos do not appear on the photos that are sent in the emails.
Thanks, but it is way too complicated and time consuming for me!
I love it ~ postcard feature is back. And zoom!!!!
Thank you so much SDZ!!! You guys rock!!!!
Is it just me – but isn’t this a big baby?? So sweet and you can really tell that he/she is a giant panda!!
Thanks to all the people who have been working on the new features. I love them and so will everyone else. What perfect timing too.
How much milk does the baby get and up until what age does the baby nurse?
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun weans her cubs when they are 17 to 18 months of age.
Just saw the pandacam just now, and I saw some logos on the screen that I was very happy about! Pause, get a photo, and the zoomer! Thanks for getting those in for all of us SDZ! We all appreciate it a whole lot!! Now, we can have a little bit more fun trying to some closeups on the little cub! Atlanta Zoo also has a zoom link on their pandacam screen for us to use to get good closeups as well.
Well, this is a little bit belated, but HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mei Sheng in Bifengxia who is 9 years old now! Hope he had a very nice day with lots of boo, an icecake, and plenty of bday presents full of snackies!
Tomorrow, August 21, will be Hua Mei’s birthday in Bifengxia. She will be 13 years old! She has a new baby to take care of, but she’ll have some bday snackies for her birthday to eat, and will be enjoying her special day with her cub. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Hua Mei!!
Mei Xiang’s gestation time are at 112 days as of July 20. I still keep checking the NZ website’s panda page for any more news about her progress, hormone levels on progesten and estrogen, and any maternal behaviors showing up. Will let you know if I find out anything from them.
That’s it for now. Going back to the pandacam to see if I can get a good peek of the baby panda!

I just saw the fresh born panda in your Zoo. My deepest regrets and biggest congratulation for this small new panda. Meanwhile I have revealed the new one, we have here in Berlin the tragedy of a lost Giant Panda (Bao Bao died in the age of 34 yesterday). But I am very happy, that San Diego Zoo has and fulfills the task to prevent and protect that fascinating animal…and I am still remembering as I was in your Zoo in 2008 and the eyes were locked by your pandas.
Keep on your important work and all the best from Berlin, Germany!
Raik Hesse, PhD, Berlin, Germany
Thank you so much for your kind words. You had the reaction that we hope for – we take our job as animal lovers and rescuers seriously at SDZ. You had the exact reaction I would have hoped for with our international visitors. I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting the land of my forbears(no pun intended) – but one of the first adventures I explore on international travels is to visit zoos.Hope to see Germany’s zoos soon – I suspect that Germany has some amazing ones!
I have a techy question: I have the Panda Cam widget on my Mac, there are cams for the elephants, polar bears, monkeys and of course the pandas. Since the baby was born, the cam has been down for all views. Is this a permanent thing? I sure miss all the cams on my widget!
Moderator’s note: Your question has been forwarded to our Web Team.
Just curious still if the widget cams being down is going to be a permanent thing? We’re all anxious to watch our widget and see the critters… we miss seeing them!
What is Bai Yun doing when it appears she is playing with the cub?
i was wondering to because i was just watching a minute or to ago and she was like moving it around and like biting it or something
Where do baby Panda’s nurse. Does the Mom has mamary glands like humans?
Moderator’s note: Panda mothers have four mammary glands: two at her chest and two lower down.
I love watching, however the cam for the pandas is really bad, extremely grainy and blurry.
When are will a decent camera, like the other animals have, be put in?
Shari
Moderator’s note: The den cam is hampered by the fact that we only use an infrared light in there. This affects the quality of the image, but we don’t want to put spotlights in the den.
dont put the spot light in there put it does need a little more light and that is a reply of a panda lover
why do pandas like bamboo so much
Moderator’s note: The live in bamboo forests, so it’s an easy source of food.
but if theres a human near a panda in like a zoo will it attack u or what if someone went near a wild panda will it eat it
Moderator’s note: Pandas are still bears, and a panda will defend itself if it feels threatened.
ok well y cant people listen so we can save our pandas i mean i’ve alwaysed loved pandas but as theses people are taking down there homes y can we make a panda island. all me have to do is find a place where people can come and visit the pandas. we can make a hotel and then the people that work there can live on the island but i will have to wait untill u answer me and well i hope u guys will think about my idea for our pandas thank u
Moderator’s note: That’s an interesting idea, trixie!
thank u but what would happen if it did happen would they give me the credit
this is trixie again but are we allowed to send bamboo or something to help out and it would be nice if we were allowed and i love pandas so i really want to help and i can almost adopt a baby panda and i will do as much as i cant to help out on these pandas
Moderator’s note: There are lots of ways you can help pandas, trixie. You can “adopt” a panda, join our Wildlife Conservancy as a hero or guardian, or help to purchase items on our Animal Care Wish List, which is currently featuring items needed by all of our bears.
will i get credit for what my idea was about or would it go to the person who built it get the credit
im doing all i can to help and in my backyard i have bamboo so im going to cut it and send it to the zoo i need the address of the zoo
Moderator’s note: Thank you, trixie, but we have plenty of bamboo for our pandas.
ok i was just wondering if the baby can walk or can hear or see yet
Moderator’s note: Not yet.
… I wanted to note, I saw the Mommy rocking her baby on 8/29 around 11 am and again around 10pm. I also saw her tapping her back paw on her tummy to jiggle the baby… maybe to simulate a rocking motion? These observations were during nursing times.
Did anyone else observe this behavior?
Again, a special thank you to the staff and volunteers- your efforts are always appreciated. Cub Mommy
Moderator’s note: Yes, this is very typical behavior for Bai Yun with her cubs. It’s pretty sweet!
no but i have heard that they do that
oh yea paint do u need paint
6.50 am 9/11 Is Mama starting to play with Baby? There was a lot of turning him over and mouthing him but it did’nt look like regular washing? His little legs were kicking away!
the baby can walk and talk now
I’m gone to inform my little brother, that he should also go to see this web site on regular basis to obtain updated from newest reports.
