Nighttime Zoo is here at the San Diego Zoo again! This means that our guests have more time to view the giant pandas, as their exhibit remains open until 8:30 every night through September 3. The pandas will soon get into the swing of their new schedule: meals arriving a little bit later and guests remaining a little bit longer. Most of the animals here at the Zoo may get a little sleepy during midday, but that is the great thing about Nighttime Zoo. Our guests may leave and return later in the evening to catch more animal activity!
These days, every day is different with the pandas, especially Yun Zi. Every now and then, Yun Zi has a really active day where he is running around and climbing up and down the trees, but then there are those lovely days where he goes to the front corner of his enclosure and naps all afternoon! Gao Gao has been getting into his bamboo more often and is doing very well; quite often, Gao Gao is the only one awake.
We look forward to hearing from you all and hope you all have safe summer travels. Come see us soon!

What a life! I just looked at YunZi resting on his hammock enjoying his bamboo.
I really enjoy reading the articles about our black and white friends. I check out the cam every day. My husband and I are no longer travelling, but if we were, this would be the very first place we would go.
hey whats happening with bai yun is she pregenant or is she on exibit
also you used to have diffrent cams what hapend to them? you had like 12 cams for the pandas
Moderator’s note: Bai Yun is off exhibit right now as we wait to see if she is expecting a sixth cub. We still have several different cameras, many now offer views in HD
Moderator: Thanks very much for the upgrade of the cameras for Bai Yun, it makes a big difference!
Thanks for the viewings of Lady Bear Bai Yun. Always love to see her beautful face.
I thought I heard some whispered words by Yunnie= Tell them Pannas aw cwosed.Sweepy time. Pandas aw cwosed! Tomowwow pannas aw out out!
Maybe I imagined tht? New hours, any tweats?
Did YunZi get his new tree you were collecting money for this past year?
Moderator’s note: Thanks to our many panda fans, we now have the funds, but its construction has not started yet. The tree will need to be built directly in the exhibit, which would disrupt things for a few weeks. Right now, we are trying to keep things calm and peaceful for Bai Yun, in case she is expecting a cub.
Unfortunately the only way I can visit is here on your cam. The good thing about this is I can visit every single day, all day. Thank you so much for that priviledge.
Moderator’s note: You are most welcome, Michelle!
When the park is closed, does the panda’s go inside to sleep, or do you put them inside?
What a wonderful place for the animals to live if they can’t live in there open space
like they once did. Bless all of the keepers and worker at the SDZoo
lu
Moderator’s note: The pandas have access to their bedrooms at night, but they can remain out in their exhibit if they choose.
This cam is just so wonderful….have been to the zoo several times when younger and traveled from ohio…a ques. pls….what are those red biscuits that the one bear gets?…is that the Gao Gao bread? They sure do put away the food
Moderator’s note: The red biscuits are called leafeater biscuits and provide important nutrients for herbivores. Many of our animals, including pandas, find them quite tasty. I find them a bit dry
How late in the year does Night Time Zoo run? What a great suggestion to leave during the animals’ sleepy time afternoons and come back in the evening — I will definitely keep that in mind if I can get down there while Night Time Zoo is going…
Moderator’s note: This year, Nighttime Zoo runs through September 3.
I just got my panda cam back. How can I tell who I’m looking at? I don’t see the camera numbers listed any more or did I just miss them?
Thanks for panda cam. It is my zen.
No numbers on the cams yet. Yunnie is in the Keebler exhibit, Gao Gao is in Bai’s usual exhibit (with the stone throne) and Bai Yun is “off exhibit” in her bedroom, her sun room or the classroom.
Yun Zi what a beautiful boy you are!
OMG, I was just seeing a very cute bear eating. My heart has melted totally. Thank you so much to the wonderful panda staff, always provide us panda updates that made my days.
If it’s Gao Gao (daddy) he has part of his ear missing; the other beautiful boy is his son (Yun Zi) who will be soon 3 years old.
Thanks for the helpful information. I just saw Gao Gao eating, and nothing is cuter than that.
Is a nesting den being provided to Bai Yun? If so, is she using it? Any update on her status?
Hello, Ladies. Welcome to Bai Yun’s Pre-Natal Class for first time mothers. I am Bai Yun and I have had 5 cubbies. Today I am so happy to be invited to share my experiences with you.
I think I have a list for all mothers-to-be. This list will not only save your life and marriage but also preserve your sanity, hee hee. I wish I knew this when I had my first cubby Hua Mei. She was a lovely cubby but I was an anxious first time mum so I made many mistakes.
1) Get a pair of ear plugs. You can shut out the world and focus on your cubby or calf or joey….
2) A list of 24h eateries that deliver. Very good for the late night/early monring times when after breastfeeding, you are awake and cant go back to sleep. Order a pizza and enjoy it in peace as baby’s fast asleep. After I had Zhen Zhen, I developed a hankering for ice cream. I actually found an ice cream parlour that delivers 24/7. Woohoo. When I was nursing Yunnie, I was blissed out on dark chocolate ice cream.
3) A good videographer cos everyone will want to see the baby. So if you got someone who can help you get the videos so that both sets of grandparents, uncles and aunties, siblings, cousins, in-laws, out-laws….will have their chance to see the baby.
4) A good cream, ladies, is essential to get rid of stretch marks. One that can fluff the fur is so important as one must look one’s best and be radiant for those cameras in our enclosures.
5) Last but not least, to ensure you dont get hit by the blues, schedule in a spa break. Go for the whole works; massage, facials, manis and pedis….but dont fall into the trap of dieting straight away. Our babies need nutrients from us. We must eat well.
Hee Hee, thank you, thank you, you are too kind…..Yes, you can share with your husbands this list……Yes, I tell you I could not have raised 5 cubbies if I did not have the support of my Gao Gao….Yes, he will have a session for first time husbands and I have told him what to say….Ok, ladies, shall we adjourn to the pool side for some tea and cuppy cakes?
Dear Yun Zi,
I must tell you how impressed I was with Bai Yun’s Pre-natal Class for first time mothers. That super mama of yours has got her priorities right and how thoughtful of her to give credit to the sire extraordinaire, your most exalted papa Gao Gao. Thank you for sharing a lovely story with us, the panda lovers of the world!
from,
Your loyal fan in Canada
Dear Auntie Pandafan-North,
Don’t I have a fantastic Mama and a great Papa? I wanted to share cos my Mama is shy so I snuck into her class and took notes. I will share all this with my future forever princess.
Are you coming to visit me and my parents soon?
Panda Hugs,
Yunz
Dear Yun Zi,
I was down to see you last March during the Panda Palooza convention but, alas, you were in the back room and we could visit only your Mama and Papa.
But this coming September I am going to China and I hope to see your brother Mei Sheng and sister Su Lin as well as Fu Long and Tai Shan and the other pandas at Bifengxia. I will be sure to share my photos.
I’m sorry to miss your birthday this year, too, but Auntie Diana and Auntie Donna will be down for the Black and White Overnight so they will be able to celebrate your birthday with you and take lots of pictures of your birthday ice cake.
You be a good boy for your mama and papa and please say hello to them for me.
Love,
Auntie Pandafan-North
Dear Auntie,
Please also try to go see my other sissy ZZ. She is in this lovely eco-park near Ermei Shan. She tells me it is cool and lovely.
Yes, as the last child at home for the moment, I always try to be good to my Mama and Papa. I promised to help Mama prepare her birthing den. Shall I paint it blue or pink? Maybe instead of being traditional, we can go with lime green or citrus yellow. I personally prefer orange to brighten up the den. I am picking up some toys for my sibling like a cuddle toy, a nice pillow and blankie. I am having such a fun time going shopping. This will help me learn so that when I and my forever princess settle down, I will know what to do.
Auntie, I hope you have a swell time in China, the land of my ancestors. I feel proud of my heritage and I am also proud to be born in the USA. Hee Hee, being born up north would be kinda nice too. Happy belated Canada Day!
Lots of love and hugs,
Yunz
I am so glad that Gao Gao is doing better. We are seeing a lot of him, and he does seem to be feeling good and eating well. Thank you for helping him and all of the pandas!
I was just watching Yunni situate himself on the tree in his yard, and I must say that the fact that his fuzzy belly flops over both sides of the log to such a marked degree is impressive! He must be eating well! Does he still weigh more than Gao Gao?
Moderator’s note: Yep! He’s a growing boy.
It’s about 11 a.m. Pacific time. I think I see Gao Gao on camera. The area around his left ear appears to be irritated or sore. I hope I am wrong!!
Is he o.k.?
Moderator’s note: The Panda Team says that Gao Gao is fine. Perhaps you saw the remains of his mushy panda bread, which has a reddish tinge? He likes to rub it on his face!
Do you have a tour available at the San Diego Zoo where you can take pictures with the pandas or maybe even pet them?
Moderator’s note: We do not offer a touching opportunity with our pandas. However, we do offer a variety of special tours, and one may include a visit to the panda exhibit. For more information, please call 619-718-3000.
Gao Gao reclining in his pool (or in his tub) while eating cracks me up. he looks like a round little king. thanks for the close-up’s on him early morning while he was in the grey tub. that is one of my favorite scenes of Gao Gao.
is he the only panda who likes to sit in the tub?
