On October 6, 2011, Gao Gao had exploratory surgery in an effort to determine the source of his discomfort (see post Gao Gao: Road to Recovery). The exploratory surgery was used to look for any obstructions that could have caused some of his discomfort. While he was under anesthesia, veterinarians were able to check out every bit of Gao, including his teeth. They discovered that his back molars were very worn down, that some existing bridgework between two of his molars needed repairing, and that one of his canines was loose. Aha! The reason for his tongue flicking and possibly the reason for his digestive issues.
If a panda is lucky enough to die of old age in the wild, the cause of its death is most often starvation. Years of eating bamboo (an extremely strong grass, remember, from which flooring and furniture is made) wear down a bear’s teeth pretty well. When a panda cannot properly break down food in its mouth, the food cannot then be properly digested. Gao is very lucky to live in a managed-care situation, where he has had the necessary dental work and has a team that can adjust his diet. As a result, of course, our poor old man has had to give up some of his favorite foods. But never fear! He’s gained some new ones.
We’ve been steaming “bamboo bread” for Gao Gao, which he receives three times a day as part of his new diet. The bread is made up of ground leaf eater biscuits, dried and ground bamboo stems and leaves, water, and a small bit of gelatin to act as an adhesive. The bread is a soft, palatable food that delivers the same nutrition that bamboo can provide. Basically, it’s easier for him to chew and digest… and boy, does he ever! Our Gao has become a bread addict. Having the bamboo bread in his diet has helped him become “Big Big,” for sure. His latest weight was 174 pounds (79 kilograms), the largest he’s been in many years!
Gao’s also getting bamboo that is smaller in diameter. We have a one-centimeter rule when making up his bamboo diet, meaning any piece that we give him has to be one centimeter in diameter or smaller. We can’t just give him tiny pieces, though. Pandas spend up to 12 hours eating, a large portion of which means stripping the outer green layer off of the bamboo. If he’s only given tiny pieces of bamboo, he doesn’t really have the opportunity to do that. So, we also take large pieces of bambusa oldhamii culm and split it into pieces that are one-centimeter wide. The culm can be any thickness, so long as it’s not too difficult for us to split (by hand, mind you). He gets 60 pieces a day, split into tiny bits by his keepers. Talk about spoiled!
Since his diet changes, Gao had a bout of passing too many mucous stools in a row. Then he had a bout of having episodes similar to those he was having prior to his surgery. We continue to tweak his diet and change the bamboo-bread recipe. We will continue to do so until it’s just right. So far, though, it seems we’re on the right track, and our old man is as sweet and handsome as he ever was.
Juli Thatcher is a senior panda keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Read her previous post, Panda Cam, Panda Trek.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop Juli. A keeper has to wear many hats I see when looking after their charges. Can you not just use the panda bread recipe that they used in BFX? Is it not the right ‘mix’? We know he is in good hands and he sure does look happy.
The bamboo bread that Gao Gao is eating is similar to the BFX recipe. It’s actually a slight adaptation from the recipe that was fed to Shi Shi while he was in San Diego, which is itself an adaptation from the Wolong recipe. We’ve been adding more bamboo to the recipe, to be sure that Gao is getting the right amount of fiber in his diet.
You have done such a marvelous job with Gao Gao, he is very lucky to be living at the SDZ and getting spoiled, pampered and waited on. It is a new challenge taking care of an elderly panda, much to learn and you’re doing great and you’ll get the recipe just right for him I know. In the meantime I’m sure he doesn’t mind you experimenting on his new diet choices.
great post, great job
I’m glad Gao Gao has the Panda Team to watch out for him and his diet!
I do miss seeing Bai Yun on cam though, and I’m sure you would have let us know if there were any signs of pregnancy—-but I just have to ask—have there been any signs of pregnancy?
While Bai is just now beginning to become more reclusive and sleepy, she isn’t showing any signs of pregnancy or pseudopregnancy yet. We have begun ultrasounds; of course, it’s too early to tell.
Glad to hear he is doing so well . You folks take better care of him than some people ( humans) do there own children!!
Oh I am so glad there is a diet for the Big man….Does Big Daddy get a Father’s day gift this year? Like a extra big loaf of Bamboo bread. It is great to see he is gaining his weight back and he is a happy guy again.
Thanks to all the staff at San Diego Zoo for how they take care of all the animals in their care. You Rock!!!!!
Good Luck to Gao Gao and many thanks to the staff who “manage” his care making sure that he lives a long and comfortable life.
Thank you Juli for the update on Gao Gao. I know he is in good hands and gets the best care from the keepers. Gao looks very happy and sure loves to eat.
These last two posts on our studmuffin, Gao, have been much appreciated. Yes, he’s a spoiled little man, but he’s WORTH IT!. His keepers know that — and maybe he knows too!. After all, he chose to live with humans who would take very good care of him! Sounds like a mutual admiration society.
I can’t wait to see Gao Gao this August. He is the only one of the family I have never seen.
The “King” stays at the “Ritz”. What more could anyone ask for

Conversation with Gao Gao #101
Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
Gao Gao: Oh, hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: You’re singing again.
G: Yup, I’m compiling my grocery list/menu selections.
T: Ah, the stomach drives the action.
G: Well, my teeth drove the tongue.
T: Huh?
G: Like my tongue used push teeth rotations.
T: Oh, but the teeth had been mended, hadn’t they?
G: Yeah, so now I concentrate on menu plans.
T: So is Mei Sheng’s Kitchen still involved?
G: Yup. He also plans to crash the Black & White Overnight sleepover.
T: Wow, exciting! So what’s on the menu?
G: Let’s see, we have bamboo panda breads.
T: Beet flavored ones?
G: No, we already get that here.
T: Then what?
G: He’ll bring some with mango, pineapple, egg custard tart, durian flavors.
T: Sounds good.
G: And some malted milk balls.
T: Huh?
G: Hua Mei will collect milk from the milk bars.
T: Now that’s interesting.
G: Fu Long will bring Sichuan pepper powders, crushed mint leaves…
T: Oh, for the anointings.
G: Taishan will gather the Bifengxia eligibles.
T: You mean a crowd will crash the event?
G: We will have courtship festivals.
T: Real courtships?
G: Traditional Yunnan Mosuo style.
T: So the ladies choose the boys.
G: Just like native panda culture.
T: Wow, there would be multiple courtships?
G: Yup. Hee hee hee.
Note: Sleepover date is a little before 8/23/2012, Qixi Festival, holiday for lovers.
(In Bifengxia)
Hua Mei and Su Lin teach courtship songs to the eligible ladies:
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go!
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
We’ll catch a fish and put him on a dish,
And then we’ll let him go!
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go!
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
We’ll catch a pig and dance a little jig,
And then we’ll let him go!
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go!
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go,
We’ll catch a panda sire and put him in a tire,
And then we’ll let him go!
HEE HAH!
Thanks for the lovely conversations. And I guess young 3 year olf pandas will not take part in the courtship rituals heh? But I am sure he will partake of all the lovely food coming from China. Heigh Ho the Merry O, when the food is in the tummy.
It’s a good day when you a story from Yun Zi AND P Wong!
What a rare treat!!! Thank you P. Wong. Love your conversations with Papa Gao.
Not many bears are fortunate enough to be given the care and treatment Gao Gao is so blessed to receive from his devoted nannykeepers, veterinarians, and the many, many others at SDZ who love him so much. And Gao is telling all of you who take care of him a big “Thank you and I love you!” right back by gaining weight and being the sweet tempered, charming panda he always has been.
Varying the amount of gelatin may lessen the stool mucous.Maybe more or maybe less.Could be necessary to research tht in varying amounts.Stool softeners?
All the animals connected with the San Diego Zoo are blessed. if only nature could provide such care givers for those in the wild.
I wonder if Gao Gao likes his bread with Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegarette?
Would Probiotics work for Panda’s?
When dealing with digestive issues, the veterinary and nutrition staff try to change an animal’s diet before trying medications. If there are other available avenues to fix any medical situation, those are usually tried before we put any animal on long-term medications. However, Gao has been put on a couple of probiotic trials for short periods of time to help out with long bouts of mucous stools or to help with the passing of normal mucous stools. They are only used for a week or two, though, if a diet change does not work first.
thanks for the very informative post. I was wondering about the tongue flicking and forgot to ask so was glad you mentioned it. seems like Gao Gao never needs to fear about starvation. glad to hear he is eating well and putting on weight.
I caught a part of his training (?) where he appeared to roll (or lie) around and get treats through the fence. he’s such a cute little old man. different from Yun Zi but endearing in his own sense.
Being a polite young panda, Gao Gao rang the bell at Woolong. A nice lady nannykeeper came to the gate. She smiled as she seemed to recognize him.
‘Well, if it isn’t our wanderer. Is this third time lucky? You have come because you know you are safe here right?’, she opened the gate and let him enter. She took him to the infirmary as he had also sustained deep scratches from Lao Ta.
The doctor on duty looked at Gao Gao and told him, ‘My dear sir, we will have to put you under to sew up your ear and treat your wounds. Also I need to check your teethfies too.’ Gao Gao nodded as he knew he was in safe hands. Soon the vet inserted a sharpie into his arm. The ouchy was not too bad and soon he felt sleepy.
The vet and his team got into action and examined every inch of Gao Gao. They patched him up and also treated his tooth decay. And then they placed him in a comfortable tub of hay to rest and recover.
Later that day, Gao Gao started to rouse as he smelt an incredible smell of porridge with yam, sweet potato and bamboo shoots. There was a huge bowl and soon it was an empty huge bowl. Gao Gao licked his lips and saw that for dessert there were approw slices. Hmmm, maybe this is what home is meant to be like. Home is where you had good food, a wife, cubbies…………
Gradually Gao Gao gained his strength and the vet spoke to him, ‘Well, sir, you are doing very well and I am going to recommend that we keep you here for your well being and safety. OK?’ Gao Gao nodded as he was getting fond of his enclosure.
A couple of months later, the head nannykeeper came to speak with Gao Gao. Gao Gao was reading the papers and had seen an article in the Panda Times that mentioned a young lady named Bai Yun in America. The head nannykeeper came with a photo of a pretty panda lady.
‘This is Bai Yun. She just had a baby Hua Mei with Shi Shi. However Shi Shi is perhaps too old for her and is not bonding well with her. We are thinking of sending you to mend her broken heart. Do you think you want to take on this task?’
In his imagination, Gao Gao felt like a secret agent being sent on a high level mission to win the paw of the beautiful babe. ‘Did he want to take on this task?’ Hee Hee Hee, what’s not to like about the task? As he looked at Bai Yun’s folder, he noted she had a propensity for mischief and men’s cologne. Pretty soon, he had committed her face to memory – perfect ears, soulful eyes, lovely fluffy cheeks…..sigh. I shall sweep her away with my salsa techniques. Hee Hee Hee. I was born wild and ready!’
With his passport, ticket, visa, vaccinations and credit cards, Gao Gao boarded the Panda Jet and winged his way to sunny California. And the rest is history.
Mission Accomplished.
(Standing ovation) BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!!
that was beautiful.
Thanks for putting this in words Yun Zi. Right from the beginning your dad knew where he would be safe and well looked after. He is one very smart panda.
And so it came to pass
the long panda romance the world envies – it is a torn ear, small stature or his salsa that won Bai’s heart
Hee Hee, it was the total package!
I always wondered now Gao Gao and Bai Yun found each other. Thanks for filling in the blanks. A product of good matchmakers.
What a great life our Gao has!! So many looking out for his welfare.
Thanks so much for taking such good care of our favorite Papa
I think so much is learned from these bears in their older age. I loved reading about BaSi, the oldest panda at over 30 yrs. old. She lives at Panda World in Fuzhou, China. Her devoted keepers take such wonderful care of her–they even hand feed her! She’s had some health problems like cataracts and pancreatitis, but came through it all like a champ.
Been watching Gao Gao now for awhile, what an amazing eating machine, he just doesn’t come up for air very much, eat eat and more eat. Great to see him.
How’s our big momma doing behind the scenes?
I had asked previously about Bai Yun’s teeth and the answer was that her teeth did not show the same wear as Gao Gao’s. Zoo Atlanta had a blog post about the difference in how a male panda eats vs. a female. The males take their time and eat at a slower pace than a female. A female panda eats quickly given the presence of her cub that eventually starts taking food from her supply.
So my question is, would that difference in eating behaviors have an effect on dental wear?
There are many factors that affect dental wear, some of which include the abrasiveness of items chewed, inherent strength of the tooth enamel (can vary, based on nutritional/health of an animal when teeth are developing), and time spent chewing, which could affect wear.
Thanks Juli for all the Gao Gao details. Loved your post about our spoiled Papa Bear.
Before Gao Gao officially met Bai Yun, he did his homework. His dossier on the pretty lady panda grew. His mission was to help her mend her broken heart and find love again.
‘Well, I am the Love Bear and I can help this pretty lady….hmmm, chocolates and flowers….too run of the mill…..I think this calls for a red corvette, a day at the beach and lots of TLC.’
Gao Gao started working out by doing handstands. Then he bought a Dictionary of Californian English and started to pick up some terms of endearment. He checked out racks of Hawaiian shirts, bermudas and sunnies.’
When he was ready, he picked up the phone and dialed her number.
‘Hello…’ and his heart beat faster. Her voice was dulcet.
‘Hi, I am a newbie in town. Gao Gao’s the name. I bring greetings from friends in China…’
‘Oh, ning hao (how are you), huan ying (welcome) huan ying!’
‘Bai Yun Xiao Jie (MIss), I was hoping you will show me around. I have a car and I thought maybe we could go cruising..’
‘Cruising? I am not familiar with that?’
‘Oh, I meant go for a drive to ‘enjoy the wind’ (Chinese phrase eat the wind means to enjoy the scenery).’
‘I would like that Gao Gao Ge Ge.’
‘Can I pick you up in one hour’s time?’
‘One hour?’ Now her heart was racing. This male panda sounded like a nice man and he had news from home. Bai Yun needed so much to have some fun now that Hua Mei was weaned and OK. Her recent rejection by Shi Shi still hurt.
Bai Yun raced around and found her lovely bonnet with flowers and she wore her polka dotted summer dress and packed her lovely pink and green bikini, just in case.
Then she heard a toot a toot outside her enclosure and standing there was a small but studly looking bear with a big grin. In the back seat of the car, there was a huge picnic basket.
Gao Gao gallantly helped her into the car and soon they were travelling down the freeway. Bai Yun was giggling at all his jokes and enjoying all the news from back home.
Gao Gao was also guffawing at some aspects of American life that Bai Yun was sharing with him. He looked at her and said, ‘Don’t you think this could be the start of something beautiful?’
Bai Yun blushed and lowered her lashes. She smiled in agreement. She too felt that this stranger had become a friend and now maybe he might even be…..her mind said ‘Go slow, go slow’ but her heart was saying, ‘This is the one!’
The End
Yun Zi — what a young romantic you are!!! I loved this recollection of your parents’ first date.
Soooooooo sweet.
So, Yunnie, you are son of Love Bear. No wonder you’ve turned so many heads and fluffy cheeks.
What a lovely, heartwarming story of the lovepandas in SDZ! Thank you Yun Zi!
See how the long hours of research and all that dedication pay off, panda keepers! To be able to pinpoint what ails our patriarch panda and care and bring him back to good health. There is nothing more important and, no doubt, rewarding to see
all your good and kindness pay off.
and, I, for one, thank you.
Onward and upward to the staff, to Sir Gao Gao, to amazing panda kind…
Into infinity…
This was so interesting to read about Gao Gao. It is obvious how much the keepers love him too and want to help him as much as possible. Thank you for your good work.
Looks like Gao Gao’s stomach was shaved. Did he have an exam?
Moderator’s note: He had a follow-up exam a few weeks ago and received a clean bill of health.
When I opened the door that fateful day, I was expecting a brother from the home country, maybe I was expecting someone who was rough and unpolished. What I saw was this small, cute looking male panda in his bright Hawaiian shirt and bermudas. He had a huge winsome grin. And my, he was so polite and he knew how to treat a gal.
As we were driving to the beach, he kept me tickled with his stories of how he was picked on because of his size. I knew if he could laugh at himself, he must be a confident man. He even showed me his left ear. I reached out to touch it. I almost cried knowing that nasty Lao Ta had almost bitten it all off.
Gao Gao had packed a nice picnic basket with boo spring rolls and boo hot dogs. I complimented him on learning fast about American food. He laughed and bleated. He said when it came to food, he was no fussy eater. I introduced him to ice creams and we shared a banana split with extra whipped cream, hee hee.
I brought my brownie camera and I have a lovely photo of Gao Gao posing next to his red corvette. Then we asked a passing panda couple to take a photo of us under a palm tree.
We took a walk along the broadwalk and I asked him if he was going to make America his home. Gao Gao looked at me and said in his low growly voice, ‘It depends.’ I asked, my heart all a flutter, ‘Depends on what?’ He smiled that Humphrey Bogard/Cary Grant smile and replied, ‘On a certain lady in a polka dotted dress with a bonnet.’ And I said, ‘What if that lady wants you to stay?’
It was then he reached out and held my paw!!!! He smiled. I cannot remember much of the rest of the day except we chatted and shared much. I remember as we drove back, one of the radio channels was playing old songs and it was ‘You’re the One that I want!’ and I felt how apt. Gao Gao later told me he felt the same. Hee Hee.
He walked me to my door and as he said goodbye, he casually mentioned he would be moving in next door as soon as they shipped over his things from China, I nearly fainted.
The minute he left, I called Mama in China. She checked the stud book and told me it was OK. Gao Gao was wild born and so it was unlikely we were related. Happy Days are here again, the skies are blue, they’re here again! Mama cautioned me against giving my heart away so soon but I told her that my gut told me that he was the one.
And I have not been proven wrong and have no reason to regret that day.
Bai Yun’s Story, Draft 1
Nice to know that Gao Gao is doing better after a good dose of TLC! Thanks very much to the entire team for taking such good care of big daddy Gao Gao! But it is funny to see that he still prefers his bamboo over the treats that the keepers are putting all over his enclosure. At least he seems to eat his bamboo first…
I noticed that Yun Zi is getter bigger too! He has a boo belly!! Could you tell us what Yun Zi’s current weight is? Thanks.
Moderator’s note: 180 pounds.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for giving us the lowdown on our Little Big Man’s diet and health issues. And thank you to the staff for going through all this painstaking work to care for him so well. What a labor of love…
Panda fans appreciate your care for these adorable creatures…
Watched our boy eat for almost two hours today. Not even a stopover for treats and pats. looks to be his same adorable cutie pie self.
Beautiful day and lots of visitors. Discovered my answer to my problem. Ageing. New furniture necessary. Pain stopped in it’s tracks, and so new bed and now new couch /chair and problem wll be solved and I will be at SDZ amid and among before too long.Answers all come when good old scientific method is applied.Love the tender of the Panda Cam, he/she upped the size and all lookers saw wonderful details. Teeth and boo.How lucky we all are -almost like being there.Thank you all.
Dear Papa,
Happy Papa’s Day from all your loving children and grand children! We think you are a fantastic Papa and we love you lots!
Boo Blessings and Hugs,
The Gao-Bai clan (Hua Mei +7, Mei Sheng, Su Lin + 1, Zhen Zhen and Yun Zi)
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY GAO GAO!!
Thank you JUli for the update on feeding Gao Gao.
Did big Daddy get something special for Father’s Day, he’s the Father of the year!
Glad to hear an update on Gao Gao….Keep up the great and very much appreciated work with him!
So…. is Gao Gao okay??? i didn’t understand much of what the artical said. if he is doing okay, it’s all thanks to the SD Zoos staff. They’re the best. X3
Moderator’s note: He is doing well for a bear of 20 something. He just needs softer food for teeth that have worn down, that’s all.
wow is that BaiYun on the cam, great to see her. Boy, she is a big girl. Any news on any ultrasound imaing and urine tests?
Moderator’s note:That is indeed Bai Yun in her off-exhibit spa area
We don’t have any news to report yet.
Well, I saw Bai is spawled on her perch in her favorite position – arm over eyes
My Special Love Bear,
Thank you for being the father to our darlings Sheng, Susie, ZZ and Yunnie. I felt it was truly generous of you to also adopt Hua Mei as your own. She loves you because you have been her Papa all these years. Happy Father’s Day and may the Panda God keep you strong and hearty for more years to come.
All my love,
Your Little Love Cloud
I have been more conscious of this recently – how hard the nannykeepers try to make things interesting for the pandas from where they place the boo and treats to the enrichment toys and medical check ups. BRAVO! I can see Yunnie, Mama and Papa really enjoying all the benefits of living in SDZ. Thank you. I am sure the pandas know they are much loved.
Wow Gao Gao loves all those cameras just sitting there eating his bamboo and taking in the San Diego sun. I think he deserves a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame. He is cutier than any of those Hollywood stars.
Conversation with Zhen Zhen #8
Zhen Zhen: Hee Yah! Hee YAH! YAH!
Tourist: Hello, Zhen Zhen.
Z: Oh, hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: Now let me guess.
Z: Huh?
T: You are practicing for the upcoming martial arts tournaments, right?
Z: You are correct. Hee YAH!
T: So you really enjoy being here at Mt. Emei.
Z: Yup. I receive lessons from Emei Sect’s finest martial arts instructors.
T: Oh, and what’s this satchel here? Looks like something from the US.
Z: Oh, a shipment from Sir Gao Gao.
T: Hawaiian shirts, bermudas, sunglasses…
Z: Yes, we will represent the Sir Gao Gao team.
T: Hmmm, very nice.
Z: And my duck friends from SDZ will cheer.
T: They’re here in China?
Z: They stowed themselves along with the shipment.
T: Now, what about the Pandalympics?
Z: Oh, they’ll cheer there, too.
(In SDZ)
Gao Gao: La la la la.
Tourist: Hello, Gao Gao.
G: Hello, Mr. Tourist.
T: So you’re singing again.
G: Hee hee.
T: So are you getting ready for the martial arts tournaments?
G: Yes, I am practicing for the Eating Contest divisions.
T: What? Eating contests? No kidding.
G: And we get to juggle panda breads, too.
T: Wow, sounds like fun.
G: I’ll even juggle while doing my single handstands.
T: Oh.
G: But I’ll make sure to be upright when I pop them into my mouth.
Dear Uncle P Wong,
Can I have a conversation please? I love Jie Jie and Papa’s.
Love,
Yun Zi
Can our boy/man pandas cool off somewhere if it gets too hot for them?
buckets of ice is always fun to watch!
Moderator’s note: There are lots of cooling options, including heading into an air-conditioned bedroom. But a pile of ice can be fun, too!
when Yun Zi was younger, there was a video with a keeper explaining that he would nap way up in the branches where it could be difficult to see him. do you believe that was an instinctive behavior or would Bai Yun start him off on a branch to hide him?
Moderator’s note: I believe it’s an instinct for a cub to climb when it is ready and able to do so.
Glad to know he’s doing better. Thank you for taking care of him. Blessings to SDZ panda staff and all the SDZ pandas! Woohoo!
