Yun Zi’s second birthday is on Friday, August 5, 2011. The birthday bear and his keepers would like to share this special day with all of his adoring fans, friends, and family. This not-so-little bear (126 pounds or 57.4 kilograms) is getting excited about his big day. But one day is not enough for our boy, so we are going to be spoiling this panda during an entire week!
We will give Yun Zi several birthday presents that he can tear open and enjoy, so look for lots of “gift boxes” and special enrichment items Monday through Friday, starting on Monday, August 1. On August 5, around 9:15 a.m. (please note time change), our Forage Department will present Yun Zi with one of their unique and famous ice cakes.
What do you think this bear would wish for on his birthday when he breaks off his Number 2? Yun Zi is hoping you can come and celebrate his second birthday with him! If you cannot be here in person, you can celebrate Yun Zi’s birthday in your own home courtesy of our Panda Cam. So “RSVP” in our comment section. We hope to see you August 1 to 5!
Jennifer Becerra is a senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo. Read her previous post, Yun Zi’s Spring Break.
Please note: The presentation of Yun Zi’s birthday ice cake has been changed to Friday, August 5, at around 9:15 a.m.

2 Years old already?? Where does the panda time go? I’m so happy to be fortunate enough to have watched Yuni grow into such a beautiful bear, thanks to SDZ Panda Cam!!! The very best panda cam around. I will certainly participate in Yuni’s party with tears of joy tugging at my heart!!! XOXO
I was there for his 1st birthday, so I definitely will try my best to be there during that week
Noon time cake was a really bad idea last year and I can’t believe that you are doing that again. Anyone planning this must have never been to the panda exhibit during the midday in August.
Wouldn’t miss it for the world!
I will definitely watch on the PandaCam…..would really like to be there in person, but……..
I can’t believe our little Yun Zi is almost 2; he has transformed before our eyes from a little wiggley stick of butter to this very handsome bear with a very intersting and mischeveous personality. What a great job the SDZ has done for our little guy and his siblings before him and his new sibling (fingers crossed) coming in August. A day doesn’t go by without me checking in on him at least a dozen times a day, thank you SDZ staff for that you do to protect and re-populate this magnificant creature.
I Agree with you all the way. What boy.
lu Calif
Kathy–Perhaps he will get one of his bierthday wishes on his birthday-like cousin Fooey did. Fooey got a Baby Brother on his third birthday last year. Considering “date night” was two years after Yun Zi’s conception, maybe…………… Love Grammmie
Thank you for the invitation. I will definitely be there all week long through the panda cam. Please give him an extra treat from me Jennifer.
RSVP – Ohio will be represented via Panda Cam…
Will attend via Panda Cam. Thanks for the invitation. Hope it’s another SDZ panda birthday extravaganza.
I will definitely be there for the big week for Yunnie. Apples, carrots, pears, grapes (do bears like grapes), peaches….yummmm and boxes galore.
See ya on pandacam, birthday boy!
I will be there via Panda Cam–having just been there over the weekend for the B&W Overnight but flying back to Baltimore on Monday morning! I will wish him an early bearday in person though!!!
Moderator’s note: Have a great time at the Black & White Overnight, Laurie!
I think Yunni will be wishing for a new brother or sister. I know I am !!
I will definitely be there all week via Panda Cam. 2 yrs old already. Time goes by fast when you are having Panda fun.
Awesome photo!
))
Thank you!
Alex-you have that right-I meant to say how lovely he looks in it—thank you for reminding ditzy Grammmie.
Are his fingers on his left hand pointing to his nice arm muscles on his right arm???? He would not show off for a camera—would he?????
wow the polar bears have snow, would have been cool if Yun Zi would have got some too, maybe next time. Don’t think he’s ever played in snow.
Hi Yun Zi! Too far to come over from Scotland UK, but will join your party via Panda cam. Have fun.
Oh My, we are getting into our terrible two’s. I’m off to Russia tomorrow. But, I will make it back just in time for his big week. I’ve been watching Yun Zi since he was a week old and have loved every minute of it. My thanks to the Panda Staff at the SDZ for all your hard work and love for the bears so we can enjoy them everyday on the Panda Cam.
I’m flying in on Aug 4th to help our birthday boy celebrate his 2nd birthday on the 5th. Can’t wait! I’ll be the one going through the line over and over.
He’s cuter than ever!
Moderator’s note: We’ll let Yun Zi know
I’ll be there via panda cam! Will I be able to see him eat in high def?

Moderator’s note: We hope so!
Oh, can you please make a video of the birthday party? I will be out of town and not near a computer, and really want to see the sweetie’ s party!
Moderator’s note: You bet! And photos, too.
I will also be watching Panda Cam!
I too will be watching every day on PandaCam as we celebrate Yun Zi turning 2 years old!! Thank you for the invitation
Thank You—I will be joining you via the Panda Cam. As for what Yunior wants for his birthday-please see the blog before this one, Not only does he let us know what he hopes and dreams of getting for his birthday, he starts with all the things he is thankful for in his short life (so far). (Yun Zi wrote it himself.)
It must be warm in his enclosure today—-I see on the cam that he is just inside a doorway opening to the inside, with a lovely red flower right beside it. Has he decorated himself with the bright flowers yet???
I hope we all have a great time—-will we get a wake up call that morning from our NannyKeepers????? Love Grammmie
Will definately be there thru Panda Cam!!
Dear NannyKeepers, Staff, Moderator—whoever has the information. If Yunior gets his wish of a baby brother, sister—or both, will he still get cameral time. Is the noon cake time Yunior time or east coast time?????
Moderator’s note: Noon-ish our time. I’m sure he’ll still get some camera time.
Does anybody know if the NannyKeepers in China check Su Lin’s first son to see if he has a webbed pair of toes like his Grammy Gao Gao?????? I know contact with humans will be breif and on a “Need Only” basis, but I would love to know just how much of his family he will end up like….Thank you….Love Auntie Grammmie
`That would be webbed toes from his GRAMMPY Gao Gao—not bad naming, just poor typing…Love Grammmie
I was at his 1st and wouldn’t miss his 2nd for anything. He is the most adorable, cuddly, and furry thing, MY wish would be to give him a squeeze
HIS wish, maybe “more boo please”.
I’ll be there via PandaCam- was there last year and wouldn’t miss it for the world!
We were down at the SDZ this AM to visit the Pandas and the Polars. Gao Gao was holding down the Panda exhibit by charming early visitors. Yun Zi and Momma Bai were not on view due to noise issues from repairs and continuing construction. Gao was right up front showing us all how he likes to lick his lips with his cute tongue.
The Polars LOVED their snow!!! They were stretching on it, digging into it, making head sized holes to..yes hide their heads inside
Chinook looks quite “Rubenesque” these days….could a cubby be coming?? There are a lot of Flamingo babies and even more nests with eggs. The two baby Malaysian Tigers were out for the first time…Adorable! We also saw the albino Python trying to play with his reflection in the exhibit glass
The Monkeys were wowing kids in several locations. Fun Morning!!! And..the Peacocks were really showing off for anyone who had a camera
There is nothing better than a visit to the SDZ!!
Moderator’s note: You always catch our critters at their best, Bobbie! Thanks for sharing your morning with our readers.
What section are the baby tigers in?
Moderator’s note: Tiger cubs at the Zoo can be seen on the Tiger Trail in Lost Forest.
Taking the day off work for a good cause, will be there!
I wouldn’t miss this for the world. Watched his first birthday. Yun Zi you are one special bear.
Let’s give him all he wants. Veggies, fruits, boxes to tear apart, SNOW, and a new sibling. Let’s make this August 5th the best ever.
I, too, will be at the Black & White overnight…perhaps we’ll make some of the enrichment items that will be given to the Birthday Boy
… I’ll still be hanging out in Panda Canyon on the 1st (let’s hear it for evening flights!)….Will definately be watching the cam on the 5th!
Have fun Donna!!! Maybe next year I can come back!! It was a blast last year…
Thanks, Dianna! We’ll miss you….when are you going to Atlanta?
This year I WILL be there for his birthday…please save me a virtual seat or a place to stand and watch him open his presents. Cherie..thank you for the kind words! I am feeling a lot better now and will be checking in more regularly..hope you are fine as well…..and everyone else!
Ahh, our little one will be 2! I will be on my first day of vacation, but will try to tune into the cam at noon.
Happy Birthday Yunnie!
Yukon, Canada will be watching via PandaCam…I would rather be there in person (sigh)…thank you to all the staff…perhaps you could refresh our memories as to our special culinary creators…bamboo kings/ice queens/veggie virtuosos/fruit fantasticos who create the special cakes and treats.
Moderator’s note: Here’s last year’s blog post: Making Panda Cakes.
Awww last year we celebrated all the “kids” birthdays
Thank you for the invite. Will watch from the cam. Checked Yun Zi’s first birthday and saw his mom was part of the celebration. Sorry that she will not be part of his party. They grow up so fast!!
Have my eyes on the Washington DC Zoo and am hoping there will be a new little cute panda to celebrate soon! Sorry it didn;t happen on Tai Shan’s birthday July 9th!
RSVP! Can’t wait for the party
Thank you Jennifer for the invitation to our sweet Yun Zi’s 2nd Birthday. I will be watching via panda cam on Aug.1st thru 4th. On Aug. 5th, I plan to attend his special day in person to wish him a very Happy Birthday.
Best wishes to Bai Yun. Maybe she will send a baby brother or sister to join Yun Zi’s festivities.
RSVP via Pandacam – will be watching from the northern city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada!! Not gonna miss this party. I hope to see the panda prince in person during the Black and White Overnight. See you soon, Yunz!!
This is probably a weird question, but one that just came to my mind. Do Panda ladies in Pseudo Pregnancies have the ability to lactate after the Pseudo Birth?? The reason I asked was that I was thinking that after an experience like that if there were twins that needed a nanny for one of them, perhaps their labor and such would not have been a waste after all. There has to be a good reason for nature to have given Pandas Pseudo Pregnancies in the first place….doesn’t there???? Thank You…..Love Grammmie
To the best of our knowledge, they cannot.
Florida will be represented by me! I’ll try to get on the SDZ pandacam during that first week in August to watch all of the fun with Yuni! Can’t believe he’ll be two years old!!

Been checking on Mei Xiang off and on during the day and nite. She did leave her den for a little bite to eat when I got on the NZ pandacam during the afternoon. I got back on the cam after about an hour later, she was back in the den and hasn’t left since. Still doing Mei watch at 3am in the morning, but going to bed in a little bit. New update on the NZ panda page dated July 13 about Mei. The vets finally got a decent urine sample for hormone analysis. They should know the results as soon as they are in, and there will be another update about that. In the meantime, Mei watch still continuing!

PS: Just love that very cute pic of Yuni on that small tree!
PSS: I sure do hope that Bai Yun doesn’t put us thru all of this waiting later this summer!
As of July 13: Mei Xiang’s gestation is 154 days; Bai Yun’s gestation is 88 days.
Very handsome picture of the birthday party boy hanging out in his tree getting ready for his big day! I have marked the date on my calendar, Yunnie-and very ready to celebrate on cam time, your time!
It’s too bad that we won’t see each other ( me and him ) at Birthday…… Only what I can do is to transfer the money, already done. Please , give him a lot of love and treats at this day. And as usual – all the best for animals- friends in SDZ!!!
Aleksandra from Poland
RSVP – Mississippi will be represented via Panda Cam!!
Thanks for the invite!
Thanks for the invitation. I wouldn’t miss Aug 5 noon for the world. Very cute picture.
Thanks for the invite. Will be there via Panda cam. Can’t wait to see what the very creative enrichment chefs cook up for this year’s cake. Would be great if Miss Panda Universe 2008 could drop by with birthday wishes. That would be a birthday to remember for sure!
Will be there on the Panda cam – wish that it were in person.
RSVP – i will be there
i won’t be there but all for be watching on the panda cam
Dear Di Di,
Jie Jie is now a Mama too! So she cannot come for your birthday parties but my best wishes and all the love I can spare go out to you. What a milestone! Enjoy your youth, my dearest baby brother. Grab every opportunity to try new things and to stretch your creativity. Hee Hee. And don’t let trees get in your way.
Your nephew is still very small and once he can open his eyes, I shall get some photos of him for Mama, Papa and you. ZZ wants videos to show her neighbours. I am still thinking of a name for Bao Bao. Not sure about Xiao Yun….hee hee, what happens if he is a Ta Yun instead…..or learns all his uncle’s bad habits….hee hee.
Although I have sent Mama a separate letter, do send her my love and tell Papa I have been telling his grandson the Ancient lore of our people.
I need to go and rest as I am still nursing and need my strength. Take care and continue to build those muscles so you can do Papa’s one pawed handstands.
Many bootiful dreams and wishes for love and joy for you my dear brother. May you grow strong and make all of us proud.
Blessings,
Su Lin Jie Jie
Dear Moderator….Thank you for putting Yun Zi”s Je Je Susie’s note where we can all read it….Love Grammmie
I will be watching from Toronto and wouldn’t miss his birthday for the world!! He’s my favorite little boy bear
I’m in San Francisco and have marked the dates on my calendar so I won’t miss anything. I saw him at his birth and can’t believe 2 years have passed so quickly. Loved watching him tear into his cake last year. He’s so adorable!
Mei just went out of her den to eat some biscuits and relieve herself. She then brought some more bamboo back into her den. It’s absolutely fascinating watching her!
Boy oh boy I think our little panda boy eats as much as his Daddy, what an eating machine he is. He’s going to be as bit as his Mommy soon.
We will be watching via Panda-cam so Scotland will be represented. Hope he has a great bearday and he enjoys his presents. We’ll be back to see Yunior soon
Panda Team–has Bai put all that boo in the den herself?
Moderator’s note: Yep!
Thanks, Moderator!
Frances in NYC–And a fine job she is doing of her duties….what a Panda Gal…Love Grammmie
Happy Birthday, Yun Zi. I will be watching via the cam from here in Anchorage, Alaska
Bai Yun is spending a lot of time in her den. This looks like nesting behavior to me. Let’s go Bai Yun, just one more baby. Why not on August 5th????
You can not have that!! Each cub has to have their very own birthday!!
Put me down for attending the party via the Pandacam. Wouldn’t miss it. I too will be there for the B&W Overnight and I’m hoping we will be making birthday presents for Yun Zi. We’ll be seeing you soon!!
P.S. Wouldn’t it be awesome for Mama Bai to have a cubbie or two on August 1st!? That would round out the week nicely with birthdays ~ AND many of us will still be visiting in Panda Canyon on the 1st. Hint, hint…….;)
Perhaps if she twins on August 1, 2011 they will let you and a friend attend to the young ones while Bai rests up a bit—-what dfo you think????? Love Grammmie
3:04 p. m. Yunior Time–Bai is on cam 11-her bedroom, showing some Boo at entrance to den…..
Deborah (No. Calif)—–In answer to a question/remark you posted on May 5, 2011 at 9:30 AM ——Please check the Blog for that day for an answer I just wrote today…..and thank you for asking…….Pandas Should Rule the Earth. We would all get to farm their favorite foods, and live quietly in peace. You don’t think they would have it any other way, do you???? Besides when they found out how good we are wth their babies I bet they would have two every time just to keep some of us busy and content to tend to their babies……Love Grammmie
Grammie — so glad you are feeling better — sorry about all the meds you’re stuck taking, but I guess it is helping since you sound like your “old self” again! Your posts always make us smile. Take good care and keep adding these posts to keep us panda fans smilin’…
Thank You—-As for being old—I am. My Mom in her 80s thought it was weird that I took pills by the handful, all she needed was an aspirin a day, and her b-12 and calcium. Love Grammmie
I just watched some Videos that this blog supplies, Thank You so much moderators for supplying us with such a great site.
Rita Petia is by far my favorite photographer, and I love Dixiemoms videos from the online feed, along with Bobbie Woods “in the zoo” videos she supplies us with….but whomever shoots, edits, and narrates the videos accessable from the zoo is also doing a wonderful job.
Thanks to all of you, Staff, NannyKeepers, and Blog Keepers too…….Love Grammmie
Moderator’s note: You’re very welcome, Grammmie!
Is there a wish list for Yun Zi’s birthday gifts?
Moderator’s note: No, the little guy has more gifts from generous panda fans than most !
I want a pair of brothers or sisters, or one each! Hee Hee.
Yun Zi — that’s what we’re all wishing for too…
he he he
Moderator — why am I NOT surprised to read your remark????
We all love our panda boy dearly…
OMG!!! He is going to be two all ready!!!
My little man ♥ Seems like only yesterday I heard that squacking of his. LOL.
I will be here for my little man. See you all then.
Hi! Just read your comments, and read that Bai Yun is also starting to den up and get her nest together! Oh boy!! Mei Xiang is still in the den, and we’re all waiting for her to make up OUR minds about whether she will have a cub or not! Besides all of the usual pregnancy behaviors that she’s been showing us all this week, she did eat a little bit of boo inside her den for a couple of minutes, then laid right back down and hugged that big boomer ball! Nothing new from the NZ panda keepers yet about the results of the urine sample for hormone levels. Hopefully, we will have something from them in the next day or two. Just keep watching Mei on the pandacam! And, I think we are going to have to start watching Bai a little bit more now that she’s starting to den up. Crazy time on the pandacams!
Will be back later on!

Dear Nannykeepers,
Can we invite Miss Panda Universe 2008 to my birthday? I think she is cute and if she wants to stay at SDZ, that would be the greatest! What do you think? Hee Hee.
Love and Hope,
Yunnie
Dearest Yun Zi—If Miss Panda Universe 2008 comes to the SDZ and decides she loves you—like we all do, did you figure to have her in the next enclosure so you can talk from the tree tops, and have a howdy gate to get closer????? Love AuntieGrammmie
Dear Grammmie,
Why I thought if she comes and decides to stay, I would share my enrichment toys and enclosure with her. It would be rude of me to expect her to stay in another enclosure with a howdy gate separating us, don’t you think? Of course we would be married first. *BLUSH* Oh darn, you made me blush. Mama might have an opinion on this though. Hee Hee.
But first I need to invite her. She is busy doing charity work, raising munnies for orphaned panda cubbies. *SIGH* She has such a lovely heart.
Panda hugs and love,
Yunnie
Darling Yun Zi—Should you get your wishes about Miss Panda 2008 I am sure that Mama and Papa, along with the NannyKeepers will help you make the correct and polite descisions regarding her “Place” in the zoo. Have a good time, and blush all you want—-since the male Pandas outgrow blushing, but the girls seldom do….Love Auntie Grammmie
sulin cub got injured but not so seriously, some scratches on belly and back as sulin dropped him several times when she was trying to take him by mouth. now the cub is taken care of by human. sulin is feeding another cub , more stronger a cub from other panda mom xix who gave birth to twins few days early.
You can see a picture of Su Lin’s cub being cared for by keepers on
news(dot)163(dot)com/11/0715/06/7901PSAS00014AED.html
In the mean time, while her little boy recovers, Su Lin is taking care of one of Xi Xi’s twin cubs that were born at Hetaoping the day after Su Lin gave birth.
Three cubs, two moms and a lot of TLC from their keepers, a big happy family!!
Pandas Live On has posted the translation from the base about Su Lin’s cub. He’s in an incubator and Su has accepted another twin cub in the meantime to nurse.
http://www(dot)pandasliveon(dot)com/giantpandas/
Here is a video of Xi Xi also known as Qian Qian with one of her cub, as well as her other cub in an incubator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idiU1vO7_8A Xi Xi gave birth to twins in Hetaoping the day after Su Lin. But unlike Su Lin, Xi Xi is in an enclosure, not in semi-wilderness. Xi Xi’s second cub is kept in an incubator and fed by keepers. They will try to exchange the cubs, so both cubs, a male and a female, will benefit from their mother’s breast milk, her motherly care and grow healthier.
In light of the slight injuries to Su Lin’s cub, it could very well that, on the video, the cub in the incubator is actually Su Lin’s cub.
I have only read it here so far, but it seems the keepers are going to raise Su’s cub, and she willl raise one of the twins born to another in “Semi-Wild Enclosure….as noted right above your comment. Well at least he is a half sib to Su Lin’s….they shared the same wild Panda as a Husband.
I am going to check in some other places to see if the news is the same there too….Love Auntie Grammmie
It looks like I did some misreading…..I will t ry to get things straight before putting my foot in in it again….Love Auntie Grammmie
Be there by Cam. Could not miss his second birthday! And will be there personally in the fall-baby to see?Construction gone, and den in place. How about 2 babies? Oh wow! The very thought of it! Yunnie is my first bear love and will always remain so. If he gets to be 80 and me over 200. china is in that doorstep-oh how sad for all of us.
Since males are not ready until 6 years, maybe we can keep Yunnie and vote on his future wife?

Su Lin doing her best at motherhood
Posted: 2011-07-15 15:22:13 UTC-04:00
We have news that the researchers at the Wolong Giant Panda wild training base needed to intervene and remove Su’s cub after discovering some injuries on the cub.
Thanks to Danielle Lemaire of Panda-fandom Worldwide of Facebook who also helps to provide panda info on a separate, who found the article about this. She has provided her own information in regards to this and I am also linking the translated piece that is very hard to read so that is why I am including Danielle’s version.
There is good news in all of this! Will keep you posted as we learn more.
Danielle’s version:
“I just found out more information about the situation in Hetaoping. It seems that Su Lin injured her baby cub when it was jumpy and screaming in the den and she had problems picking her cub. The cub got slight left hip and abdomen injuries and is being cared for by the keepers. The keepers managed to fool Su Lin and took her cub away and replaced it by one of Xi Xi’s cubs. The keepers took some of Su Lin’s baby’s stool, and rubbed it on Xi Xi’s baby’s anus in order fool Su Lin. And it worked, they left the cub on the ground, the cub start crying, Su Lin came to pick up the cub, did not think about it, and accepted Xi Xi’s cub. I am not sure when that swap was made.”
Use the link at the top for more complete information—I hope All is well that ends well….Love Auntie Grammmie
Yun Zi’s Birthday Blog made the Feedburner/PandasLiveOn, along with a new study about habitat diversity between Male and Female Pandas—so keep scrolling down to the bottom and do not miss anything.
Also let us know when you get confirmation, more information, or different information about Su Lin so we can all keep up with what is happening. Apparently after the swap Su decided a cub is a cub, and went right into mothering mode without checking to see if it was hers or not. Love Grammmie
Wish I had a way to get there but I don’t so I’ll watch on the cam. Look at what a big boy he is and I think his wish will be to grow as big and strong as his mom and dad. Our panda cubs are exceptional and Yun Zi is a prime example. Remember too he has nieces and nephews now as well. I know it is going to be a wonderful day for him and all his admirers.
To All: SDRose place a fantastic video of the Polar Snow Day uup on You Tube.
She also placed a short video of one of the Peacocks strutting his stuff. Must See links are:

Than you for allertting us Bobbie….Love Grammmie
Bobbie: Thanks for the link — that was great fun!
Please tell me that Su Lin’s cub will be okay! Hopefully the cub will be returned to her after awhile.
‘Mama, Mama, I heard about Su and baby! How is she?’ Yun Zi explodes into his Mama’s den where is resting as she is trying a new detox programme.
Mama looks up from her bed and smiles, ‘ Good News, Su was scared and she called me crying as she thought she had hurt her baby. But the nannykeepers are helping.’
‘What happened?’
‘The baby was crying and Su was trying to pick him up but he was wriggling so much she grazed his leg. I think it was at his hip. SO my grandson cried even louder which scared by poor girl even more. It is her first child and boys do cry a lot.’
‘Mama, I didn’t cry at all.’
‘Yeah yeah, and I am the Snow Fairy…’
‘Mama, you are so not the Snow………..I geddit, you are teasing me, hee hee, did I cry?’
‘Of course you did, when you were hungry, when you wanted to be cuddled and when you were grumpy….I learnt to sleep with one eye open.’
‘How is Su Su now? Does she need me to fly there to help her with my nephew?’
‘Nope, she has plenty of help and the nannykeepers have taken the cubby to rest and heal. And she is helping to nurse Aunty Xi XI’s baby in the meantime.’
‘KEWL! Mama, can we discuss my birthday party?’
‘Which one? The ones planned by SDZ or our very own Panda Family one?’
‘None of the above. I thought since I am growing up, I should have my own cubbies only party with AJ, Ping, Fu Hu, Po, De and PO, and,,,,,’
‘OIC, and what sort of party would you like?’
‘That’s what I want to discuss. Can I have a theme party? Mama, we can transform my enclosure to look like Bearsworth and I could get round framed glasses and a zig zag scar and an invisibility cloak…..’
‘Son, let me think about it! Mama needs her nap NOW.’
‘Mama…’
‘This is a hologram of Bai Yun. Your Mama is not available at this moment’ replies Bai in a monotonous robotic voice as she firmly pulled her eye mask over her eyes and zoned out her son but not before planting a nice Mama’s kiss on his forehead.
Thank You Yun Zi for sharing with us,,,,Love Auntie Grammmie
I just read that Yun Zi’s little nephew was “slightly” injured by his mother, Su Lin. The cub was taken from Su Lin to be cared for, and a cub from another mother was given to Su Lin. Stool from the injured cub was put on the replacement cub to encourage Su Lin to care for it. The trick seems to have worked. Does the San Diego Zoo have any more information on the medical condition of Su Lin’s cub?
Moderator’s Note: We don’t have any more information regarding Su Lin or her cub at this time.
On tonight’s news, a clip of Su Lin, her cubby and the cubby swap was shown. Her cubby is recovering in a incubator. She is nursing Xi Xi’s cubby and is holding him very tightly to her as she eats. She must be concerned in case she drops ‘him’ again. Su Lin is looking good.
I just came across this unbelievable video of Su Lin, Xi Xi and the cubs. The advantage is that the details about the video are written in English on the side!
But in short, Su Lin’s cub got injured and is cared for by the keepers. Xi Xi, another panda at Hetaoping had twins the day after Su Lin gave birth to her cubs. While the keepers are taking care of Su Lin’s cub, they gave one of Xi Xi’s cubs to Su Lin. To make sure that Su Lin would not reject the cub, they rubbed excrement from Su Lin’s cub on Xi Xi’s cub anus before giving it to Su Lin. Su Lin took the cub and went to her den to take care of the cub. Newscontent(dot)cctv(dot)com/news.jsp?fileId=113602
Replace (dot) by actual dot.
Danielle! I did it! I followed your directions and I got to the right place! How can I ever thank you. I watched the video a few times and then a couple more, and read the shot list and looked again! imagine Su Lin dropping her baby. i hope it is alright and will soon be back with SU Lin! OMG I am so happy you are on this blog!! Apparently it was not badly hurt so Su Lin gets it back! Now you all know why I was so worried that Su Lin is inthat place. She should have been here!!!! She will be a grea mama but she knows nothing about babies!!! And who can help her in the wild, the real wild, or any new mamas!! I fret so! But I love Su Lin and ZZ and Yunnie and what can I say but that!
Virginia, at the Centers in China, they have great success with teaching panda mothers to be better mothers if it doesn’t come to them naturally. Since so many cubs are born at the centers they have a lot of experience. And they have some of their very best people at Hetaoping, as the reintroduction program is a program that is very close to their hearts and a very important goal for the survival of the pandas as a species. We have to trust them. They came up with a very good solution when they noticed that Su Lin’s cub was slightly injured and by trusting her to care for a stronger cub, it will help Su Lin to build confidence and she will become a better mom. Once her cub is recovered, she will be ready to care for him.
Danielle: Thanks for the link — this was awesome to see what actually took place. Here’s hoping all that effort will lead to a good outcome!
(Certainly looks hopeful at this point.) Thanks again for sharing this link!
What a fantastic video! Su Lin scooped up the baby and accepted it so readily! Such a wonderful thing to happen for her. In the meantime I am sooooo frustrated with Mei Xiang and feeling soooo sorry for her now at this point. I keep trying to stay positive but it is most difficult. She needs to have a cub after all that she has gone through. With thousands cheering for her hopefully she will present us with a cub.
Great video Danielle. I was very surprised to see the staff right in the yard with Su Lin. Sure he was moving quickly to replace the cub, but since she never has had staff in ‘her space’ in SD, I was honestly shocked that she didn’t go after him.
I still think it would be perfect if Su Lin ended up looking after her cub and also Xi Xi’s #2 cub and teach them both all her and Bai Yun’s wisdom.
Lee in Vancover–If she went after the keeper who went into her space, would she just hug him like a cubbie—or lick him to death like a dog might???? Love Grammmie
Danielle in NY….Have Bai Yun and Gao Gao had their laptops out all day so they can keep getting footage of their Daughter and their grandson????? Love Grammmie
Great coverage–Thank You for leading us there. I would not have seen it without you going to the rouble to find and post it….Love Grrammmie
You are very welcome Grammmie.
Thank you was for Danielle, NY, in my last post…grammmie
Hi! It’s after 11pm EDT, and I am still on Mei Xiang watch on the NZ pandacams. As of tonite, Sat., July 16, Mei is STILL in her den and has been pretty restless off and on for nearly 10 days now ever since she went into full blown den up early last week. NZ panda keepers are still waiting on the hormone levels results from the latest urine sample they sent in for analysis. There should be an update about that early next week. In the meantime, Mei has a new toy to hug like a baby panda–a big boomer ball! She has totally ignored the kong toy and the small metal grate that she usually hugs! I have watched her literally hug that ball when she’s sitting and laying down on that big nest of hers in the den. I know that all of us pandafans are really starting to bite their nails and pull their hairs out wondering and waiting whether Mei will actually deliver a cub or not, but we’ll have to keep watching and waiting for her to make up her mind! Gets a little bit aggravating, doesn’t it? We love Mei just the same!
Hope everyone that are at the Black & White Overnite are having a great time, having tons of fun! Hope that great San Diego weather stays great thru the whole weekend and doesn’t get too hot for you all! Say HI to Bai, Yuni, and Gao for all of us that couldn’t make it this year, ok?
Read about Su Lin’s cub from your comments and I think from Pandas International. I sure do hope that this little guy will get better very soon. I’m also glad that Su Lin has accepted Xi Xi’s twin cub and is taking very good care of him. That will give this cub a very good strong foundation for continued growth in the weeks, months to come. Hopefully, when Su’s cub gets better, she will be able to take him back after a few days away from his mom. The trials and tribulations of being a first time mom! Su will learn from all of this and get better at this motherhood thing as time goes on.
Gonna go and get back on the NZ pandacam for more Mei watch! Will be back later on!

Chari, the Black and White Overnight is not until July 30. Please wish us good weather then. Thanks.
Oh, OK, pandafan north! My bad! Got the dates wrong! Yes, I will be praying for good, fairly cool, nice weather for all of you that will be going to that event. You all have fun! Say HI to Bai, Gao, and Yuni for me!

Chari Mercer–We are all hoping for a cubbie or cubbette from Mei Xiang, but if she decided to wait another year we will all understand. However—she might want to have 2 cubbies or cubbettes to make up for us feeling badly for her since she has no control over our wishes or hers….Love Grammmie
Yeah, I know, Grammie! Mei Xiang is being very low key about whether she has a cub or not! Just checked in on her on the NZ pandacam, and she is still in her den! Has not left it for a couple of days or so now, and she’s been denning up for nearly 10 days. I’ll be keeping my eye on her! Hoping the NZ panda keepers will have a new update about her hormone levels sometime this week. There has been a precedent for very long pregnancies for mother pandas. There is one momma panda at Bifengxia, China that had a gestation period of over 320 days before she gave birth to her cub around February this year. Pandas International has the info on her, and I don’t remember this momma panda’s name right now. I sure do hope and pray that Mei Xiang doesn’t have that kind of gestation period! That will drive everybody crazy!!

Once Upon a Time in faraway China, in the Kingdom of the Pandas, Prince Yunnie was fast approaching his 2nd birthday. The second birthday marks his transition from child to sub-adult and he would also be expected to help his father the Emperor with some official duties. Of course his elder brother the handsome and brilliant Prince Sheng was famous for his kind and gentle ways. It was reported that Prince Yunnie was the same. In fact he wanted his birthday celebrations to be one for all the people to enjoy and he wanted to ensure the less fortunate would also be blessed and had pledged half his toys to all the cubbies who are born this year.
Prince Yunnie was taking a stroll in the garden of the palace when he chanced upon his sister the bautiful Princess Su Lin. She was nursing her young son. She turned at smiled at her baby brother.
‘Beautiful morning, elder sister! May I help you with my nephew?’
‘You may burp him and carry him if you wish.’
‘YAY! Yes, I wish it very much.’
‘And baby brother, what is your birthday wish?’
‘My birthday wish is that you will no longe call me ‘baby’ brother! Hee Hee, just joking! I would like to have a party with all the cubies in the kingdom and we can go and play among the trees in the palace.’
‘Hmmm, Papa may not like that as that may destroy his precious Golden Arow Bamboo Grove…’
‘Or maybe we can go sailing on the river? And have fireworks? Also we can have dumplings made by Mama. Best in the world!’
‘Have you spoken to Empress Bai about this?’
‘Mama is having her beauty nap now and I am smart enough to know I should not interrupt that.’
‘She may have other things on her mind, you know, my dear ba….brother.’
‘Oh, is it what I think you are thinking?’
‘How do I know if what you are thinking what I am thinking?’
‘If I am thinking what I think you are thinking, hee hee, I am going to get my bestest birthday present in the world, next to being an uncle of course. Isn’t that right, Xiao Yun?’ grims Prince Yunnie as he cradles his nephew.
‘Excuse me, my husband has not agreed to naming our son Xiao Yun.’
‘Why not? After all his brother in law is so adorable.’
‘I see Papa has not trained you in the virtue of humility yet! Nevertheless, I think he looks more like a Wei Xiong or a Ta Loong, don’t you think?’
‘Or a Wei Yun or a Loong Yun, don’t you think, hee hee?’
And with that the ever patient Princess Su Lin gave her youngest sibling a playful swipe which sent him rolling giggling down the slope into the moat.

I read these stories over and over—–they are great entertainment-and I see the Pandas in my mind’s eye…….Thank You…Love Auntie Grammmie
For those of you who will be attending Yuyn Zi’s Birthday, and or, the Overnight, here is a composite of other places at the SDZ to visit as well
The video has short clips taken during my visit on July 13th 2011.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-nBgu903jA
Prince Yunnie was walking through the capital city on his way to his best pal’s home. His best pal is a takin named Wushi. They loved to wander through the streets sampling the treats on sale and meeting new friends. In fact a polar bear girl, Lady Snowflake, had just moved into the neighbourhood and the pari decided to pay a visit.
Like all good guests, they needed to bring a present when visiting someone for the first time. Prince Yunnie had a box of his mother Empress Bai’s cakes. She was famous for her honey and apple clusters. Prince Yunnie was certain he would make a good impression. Wushi brought along a bag of toys as he noted that in portraits of Lady Snowflake, she was always playing with an orange ball.
They were slowed down by the numerous people who stopped to greet the Prince. Being the ever polite and well brought up bear, he would always inquire after their health and their family before continuing.
‘Hey bro, you keep this up, we may make it to her place by next year’s Mid Autumn Festival if we are lucky,’ commented Wushi. He was not irritated as he too liked meeting people. But he was keen to play with the toys.
‘OK, lets duck down this alley. I think we can go via the canal,’ suggested the panda prince.
Little did they know what awaited them as they went down the Alley of Adventure!
[To be continued.]
I really hope to be there.
We all know Mei Sheng mated even though we don’t know if he actually sired a baby. But, I don’t remember ever hearing anything about Tai Shan mating. Does anyone know?
If you go to this link

you will see some great pictures of FU HU, and with entertainment for the upcoming birthday alerts. The Photo of Yunioris even bigger than the one we click and get the larger one—-showing many details….Love Grammmie
Moderator: will they give Su Lin back her cub when he recovers or will she be raising the the twin of Xi Xi. What will happen to Su Lin’s cub, will the keepers raise him
Moderator’s Note: We don’t have any information regarding Su Lin and her cub at this time.
I just found Panada News for Su Lin, Mei Xang, Tai Shan and Yun Zi……and many more. That is at GiantPandaZoo dot com.
I found a great pictures of Su Lin and Tai Shan in China. When you get to this link there is a rotating set of pictures of many pandas and Tai Shan is in the collection. Handsome portrait posed with bamboo spear in front of A frame panda house.
Down in the body of the page are photos and stories about Su Lin, and updates on Mei Xiang pregnancy updates. They also have a story on Yun Zi’s Party Invitation
I am glad my search engine led me to this site and I am happy to share it. All Panda News all the time all over the world

Thank you so much for providing the link to us……not only for the main subjects, but each new thing y ou open can lead you almost anywhere. I was even able to catch up on the news about the 14 year old male that died in October….something I have bween wondering about, but illness kept me from my computer. You have certainly done a good deed today….Love Grammmie
Thanks all,of you. I got the Panda News one ok. So many Panda babes at so many zoos! So necessary for all the world. Fu Hu is adorable too, he is kind of square His girl keeper carries him around and he never seems to mind it. Another body is ok, and he bedevils his mama and she loves it. Thanks for his videos too. I love you all, you make my days wonderful with your help!
Moderator: I am a little out of touch lately — who is on which camera these days? It looks like Gao Gao where Yun Zi used to be…???
Moderator’s note: It’s possible that the keepers may have temporarily shifted the pandas differently because of ongoing construction for Panda Trek, but in general the Cam numbers on the screen still indicate who is where and correspond with the list indicated on the Cam page.
Hey, you all! Does anyone have any more news about Su Lin’s cub in the last couple of days? I sure do hope that he’s healing up and will be back in Su’s big warm hairy arms soon. Plus, I’m very proud of Su for adopting Xi Xi’s twin cub and taking care of him. Looks like she can be an adoptive mom as well!
Looks like we are going to have panda birthdays for the next 3 months! We already celebrated Tai Shan’s 6th birthday on July 9. Yesterday, July 18, was Le Le’s birthday at Memphis Zoo! He is 13 years old! Happy Birthday, Le Le!! Hoping that Le Le will be a first time daddy soon. Next panda birthday will be Mei Xiang’s at NZ on July 22, and she will also turn 13 on that day. Wouldn’t it be awesome if she did have her cub on her bday?? That will be an awesome birthday present for her!! Then, there are 9 panda bdays in August, including Yuni’s on August 5, Mei Sheng on Aug. 19, and Hua Mei on Aug. 21 (our SDZ pandas)! In September, there will be 4 pandas having birthdays, including Bai Yun on September 7! Alot of panda bdays coming up this summer to celebrate! Little Po in Atlanta has his first bday on November 3.
I checked in on Mei Xiang today and late tonite on the NZ pandacam, and she is still in her den, hasn’t left it in a few days, eating a little bit of the boo from the nest, napping away, still showing pregnancy/maternal behaviors. She’s been denned up for nearly 10 days now! Still waiting on her to make up our minds! I’ll still be watching her!

Oh yeah, Gao Gao has his special bday in January since no one knows his exact bday since he’s wild born. We always love to help Gao Gao celebrate his special day every year!
Dont forget Su Lin on August 2nd and Zhen Zhen on August 3rd. My girls are growing up
LJ, haven’t forgotten about Su Lin and ZZ’s August birthdays at all! There are about 9 pandas total in the USA (or were in the USA) that have bdays in August, and I will be saying happy bday to all of them! National Zoo’s Mei Xiang’s bday is coming up this Friday, July 22, 2011, and she will be 13 years old. Don’t know if she will be celebrating this year as she is still denned up and possibly waiting for a cub to arrive. So, we will be wishing her a great bday on her day while she stays in her den waiting for her baby to arrive (being positive)!

so many to keep track of….but, I think that is a good thing, so many cute black and white fuzzy butts
Moderator, I have come across a few pictures of Gao Gao showing that a patch on his belly has been shaved. I don’t recall reading anything about it. Could you please let us know why it was done? Thanks.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nekomama7/5911618538/
Moderator’s Note: Bears are shaved for medical examinations. Gao Gao recently had some dental work and might have been shaved for that purpose.
Thanks very much for the information. I will keep my eyes open to see his brighter smile!!
My Dearest Favorite Yunior: I was wondering what program you are running on your computer equipment. I was messing around in my windows 7, to personalize my screensaver (usually a great photo Auntie Weeta has taken of you) when I found a set of several rotating screen savers from Uncle Po’s newest movie “Kung Fu Panda 2″. Now if only I could find a way to have you and Uncle Po as my screensaver at the same time—I would be in Panda Heaven. If you do not have “7″ you could add that to your birthday wish list—or if Mama gets busy with a new little Yunior-or Yuniorette you and Papa could enjoy the “Po Show”….Love Auntie Grammmie

Even when I got the site dierctly put it on my search engine, it said I had a mistake, Did it the second time, same answer, so I will continue to use PandasLive On for her news. She is some gorgeous panda and Lunnies baby, first one, so I keep her in mind. Thanks anyway again.

Tai Shan once again struggled with his recurring digestive disorder early this month so he had a rather quiet birthday this year. Hope he’s recovering well.
Zhen Zhen has moved to live with his brother Mei Sheng so it’s hard to catch them on camera. Heard that they love spending the night on the trees these days.
June–tell us more about Zhen Zhen (who is a girl) and Mei Sheng–we haven’t heard anything about them in so long since Zhennie was moved!
Mei Lan lives in Chengdu, not in Bifengxia like Zhen Zhen and Mei Sheng.
I was wondering if there has been any efforts to genetically “boost” the nutritious value of bamboo? Maybe amp up the fat or protein content so the pandas can get more goodness from less? It was just a curiosity that bubbled up as I was reading about how crops can be genetically modified now in so many wonderful ways.
And Ms Moderator, could you ask The Panda Team if a mother panda stays in “birthing” mode too long, could she become too weak to actually have her cubbies? I am worried about Mei Xiang at the NZ. She has been denned up for a long time now.
Thanx!
Moderator’s Note: “No efforts have been made to ‘improve’ bamboo. How could we improve on thousands of years of evolution? Of course we do supplement our bears with biscuits and veggies.” – Suzanne Hall, Panda researcher
Tiny—I just reread this, and my first thought was overly large in body fat…since they would not have anything better to do all day…..but now I am thinking that they would have time to run for elective office—-and bring peace to the world…Love Grammmie
Today is Tuesday! What is up with Bai Yun? Barerly eating this afternoon. Took haven in her AC area. Took one small stick at a time. Something is up with her today. Baby?
Does heat affect them to ???behaviour?
Either Gao or Bai are having dinner in bed (welll in the bedroom). I guess they are demostrating to Yunior some of the ways you can use your apartment room for more things than just sleeping….3:32 Yunior Time…Love Grammmie
See our lovely Rita Petita-Mollie in a photo. We started at: http://www.giantpandazoo.com/panda/
I was cruising around that new Panda Page provided to us a day or two ago, and read, then clicked on the right upper side “PAMBASSADOR@SDZ”. I figured Yun Zi had discovered a new place where his fans, and fans to be, could get a great look at him, and found Mollie-not instead of, but in addition to. Scrolling down to the 7th photo, (without clicking for more Panda photos in the middle of the 7) there is greatly favored Amateur Pandarrozzi, Mollie. There is also a photo of a narrator before Mollie and Suzzanne after it. Now I must go to the area offered for more Panda Pics and see how they came out.
Please disregard if you had already found it, but if not—go enjoy, I am going to the extra photos of our 3 Pandas in residence….Love Grammmie
I love watching the polar bears. I can not believe how old they are already. I will finally be taking my 2 year old to go see them in person this weekend.
Great site, Grammie — thanks for the tip — this is a really fun and informative website. I liked the picture of Molly & Joel too! So thanks again..
I am glad you are enjoying it….and an additional photographer, these folks are great for bringing their visionc to us…..
The other Panda Photos were great—and they were not Mollie’s. I am a real Rita Petita fan, but I guess there are more good photogs out there. Our Pandas are blessed to live in a time that photography has gotten so good…..Love Grammmie
Yun Zi’s MOTHER should be spoilt as well, what a wonderful patient bear Bai Yun is.
She should be spoilt every day of the entire year every year ..and forever!!
Any news on Bai Yun thermal imaging
Moderator’s note: We will be posting about that soon!
‘ARRRRGH!’ screams Prince Yunnie as a sack was thrown over his head, blinding him. He kicked out as several burly arms tried to kidnap the Prince.
Wushi ran to his friend’s aid and headbutted the assailants. In the melee, Prince Yunnie loses his footing and he starts to roll rapidly down the alley. As he tumbles the sack comes off and he sees 2 simians running off as Wushi is still excitedly headbutting and biting them.
When Prince Yunnie smashes into the side door with a loud bang. Wushi runs to his friend’s side, worried for his life. The door opens and standing in the light is a vision of loveliness, panda loveliness.
‘Oh Prince Yunnie, are you all right?’ whisphers Lady Precious Jade. She is the youngest daughter of Lord Yang who was senior court official. She kneels and nestles Prince Yunnie in her arms.
His heart is beating very fast cos they have been playmates when they were a few months old but in the last few months, they have been separated. She was learning all the necessary womanly skills to be a good wife and mother. He was learning how to be a good ruler from his wise Papa.
Wushi pours some water onto a mug for his friend. Lady Precious Jade takes the mug and helps her childhood pal sip a few drops of life giving water. As he staggers to his feet, he has a horried gash on his forehead and his left paw looked broken. He was in lots of pain.
Wushi turns to Lady Precious Jade, ‘ Hey Jade, do you think your family doctor can come and take a look at Yunnie? I dont like the look of his paw.’
‘Yes, Yes, of course. Help support him into my kitchen. I will send for help at once and also inform his parents, our wise rulers. They must know immediately.’
The next few hours was a whirl as Lady Snowflake came, arriving at the same time as Empress Bai and Emperor Gao. By then Prince Yunnie was cleaned and bundled up in bed. The doctor had put a splint on the dislocated paw. The patient looked very sorry for himself.
Empress Bai was furious. She wanted to immediately rush out and search for the perpetrators of this atrocity on her son. Her husband was pacing, thinking of who amongst his enemies would dare attack his family directly.
Wushi was sitting with Lady Snowfalke who being a baby polar bear was upset and crying that her elder brother was hurt. Wushi kept comforting her as Lady Precious Jade brought some treats to help calm young Snowflake who kept saying, ‘If he was not coming to see me, he would be safe…’
Then suddenly, Emperor Gao smashes his paw on the table. ‘Enough! I will not allow this attack on my family to go unpunished. Call my council of elders and we will convene a war meeting tonight.’

Any chance that Lady Princess Jade resembles Miss Panda Universe of 2008?
Anne in NYC That is a good one…..Love Grammmie
Now Auntie Anne,
This is just a story that Auntie Lucilla is helping me write.
I think Lady Jade would look somewhat like Miss Panda Universe 2008 but as they say, all characters are fictional and any resemblance to any living animal is purely coincidence.
Love,
Yun Zi
Great story!!! (as always)
Any news about the polar mom, is she or isn’t she going to have cubs in the near future?

how do we send pictures for the Panda photo contest, my granddaughter was in SD last week and has some special pictures. Kay
Moderator’s Note: Kay, simply go here: http://www.sandiegozoo.org/nighttimezoo/community.php and follow the directions on-screen. Thanks for participating, we’re looking forward to seeing your granddaughter’s submissions!
I hope you are ready for more than 100 additional pictures of Mei Lan!! She looks so beautiful eating her bamboo in the middle of the greenery!! If it wasn’t for the pieces of apple that she received at the end of a long stick, you would think she is in the wild somewhere. She looks really happy.

Emperor Gao sent his men to discover who would dare to try to kidnap his son. Prince Yunnie had by the second day recovered his spirits. His paw was broken and he was visited daily by Lady Precious Jade to his great delight. His pals Wushi and Snowflake came and played with him.
On the fourth afernoon after the attack, a young male panda soldier ran into the palace. He was brought before the Emperor. He kowtowed and started to speak, ‘This soldier has founf out there is a grave plot aganst our Emperor. The hooman King of the neighbouring kingdom wants to conquer our lands and it was he who sent the two apes to kidnap our beloved prince.’
Empress Bai jumped to her feet and wailed. Emperor Gao frowned and he turned to his adviser and dear friend Lord Le Le. Lord Le Le quietly said, ‘I think you need to show the hoomans that you will not tolerate such acts of violence.’ Emperor Gao raised his paw to silence him. ‘As Emperor I have ben committed to the ways of peace. I have never loved war. It has always been peace that I have promoted. Nevertheless Prince Yunnie has been hurt and I must act. Leave me everyone, I need to write a special message to the hooman King; one that will clearly spell out my feelings.’
As his courtiers left him, Emperor Gao went into his innder chambers and sat down and meditated. He needed to be in a correct frame of mind to write this letter.
Empress Bai was boiling all manner of soups and mixing herbs for her son to take. And Prince Yunnie was running around the palace avoiding these ministrations of his Mama. He ran into his sister Princess Zhen Zhen. She was performing acrobatic tricks in a bamboo grove.
On seeing her brother, she did a double somersault with a half twist to land directly in front of him. ‘Hey baby, let me see….not so bad, some scratches and some bruises…you still look cute, hahaha, I gather Jade thinks so.’
‘I don’t know whether she thinks I am cute!’ murmurs Yunnie as he turns pink.
‘Blushing! Hahaha, she is pretty and has Mama’s perfect round ears.’
‘Does she? I never noticed.’
‘Really? And that black spot on the tip of her nose is cute.’
‘No, she does not have a spot there!’
‘Aha, so you have been observing her.’
‘Well, she has ben visiting me everyday what can I do but look?’ replies Yunnie innocently. He tries to feign innocence but ZZ soon tickles him.
‘Hahaha, stop stop Jie Jie. My wounded paw is hurting me. Hee Hee, ouch.’
Princess ZZ immediately releases her brother as she loves him and does not want to hurt him.
‘YUNNIE! YUNNIE! Lady Precious Jade is here!’ calls his Mama.
ZZ rolls her eyes as her brother skips off to receive his guest, after a detour to comb his fur and spray some cologne.

Dear Yunni; you go…go…go…GO!
Auntie Grammie will be waiting to find out what happens next.
Love this tale. Enchanting. Yunnie, you’re one creative bear! Thanks to Auntie Lucilla for her help in getting your story to the world.
Moderator: This isn’t a Panda request, but didn’t know where else to put it… Would you ask the Nursery Nannykeepers if they could post a video of Thai, the baby silver leaf langur? I read her story on the Global newsletter and she is soooo cute… Thank you.
Moderator’s note: Stay tuned – we will be posting video of her on the San Diego Zoo website next Wednesday, July 27.
Dear Moderator… I looked for the video of Thai and couldn’t find it… however, she has gained instant stardom! The local news channel had a quick clip of her and they were oohhhing and aahhhing about how cute she is…Hope the video gets posted soon!
Moderator’s note: Here’s the link to video of our newest baby langur.
Thank you… She’s bigger than what I thought she would be… She is absolutely adorable…
Auntie Lucilla;
If you have not been called a genious today—let me be the first one to say it-you are a genious….Love Grammmie
so much love to you, beautiful boy.
wish i could give you a real big bear hug!
kisses.
Auntie Kat
Lady Jade’s beautiful lustrous eyes were trained on Prince Yunnie’s face. He blushed. She smiled and glanced away, blushing too.
‘Yunnie, you are recovering well. Your cuts have faded. How is your paw?’
‘Still hurting but less, thank you.’
‘Ah, I made some biscuits for you and I also brought copies of the latest best seller, Prince Panda and the Magical Bamboo Flute by our favourite writer Lu Xi Le. It has lovely illustrations Wei Ta Ba Ti Tah.’
‘Oh goody, can you read to me as my paw is not strong enough to turn the pages, please?’ asks Prince Yunnie so sweetly that Lady Jade smiled and turned the pages. He snuggled next to her to see the pages.
In this way the Panda pair spent the afternoon quietly together. Empress Bai observed them behind her screen. She smiled at what she saw. Her three oldest children have grown and married. Now she had Princess Zhen Zhen and Prince Yunnie left in the Palace. She wondered whether it was time for her and Emperor Gao to retire or…..hee hee, maybe, hee hee, she was approaching her 20th Summer….a new Prince or Princess would bring joy to the country. With these thoughts she went to her chambers for her beauty nap.
In his chambers, Emperor Gao had penned a stern letter to the Hooman King. However he wanted peace and asked the Hooman King for a meeting. So that they may discuss how to live peacefully. The letter was carried by his faithful courtier Lord Le Le.
In the evening Lord Le Le returned, looking saddened. Emperor Gao rushed to his friend and asked what caused this.
Lord Le Le composed himself and said, ‘The hoomans are greedy and have been cutting down the trees and the bamboo that are our homes and vital to our life. They want to build factories and industries. They don’t care for the environment as we do. The Hooman King has agreed to a meeting two days hence.’
‘This is not good, Lord Le Le,’ mumbled Emperor Gao in deep thought. Empress Bai appeared at his side offering him a cup of his favourite boo beer. She gently touched his paw to show her support for whatever he decided.
‘Lord Le Le, our soldiers have reported to me that the hoomans have been capturing animals all over and putting them into cages. Some are eaten, some are sold as pets and some are placed in zoos. We will lose our freedom,’ observed Emperor Gao.
A small tear drop rolled down Lord Le Le’s cheek. ‘What are we to do, Gao Gao?’

Yunnie has such a come on line!!! “My paw is still sore”… Yunnie is such a charmer… I hope the story has a happy ending…
Looks like Mai Xiang of National Zoo is not pregnant and has been experiencing a psuedo pregnancy, too bad, hopefully Bai Yun will give birth within the next few weeks, keeping fingers crossed.
Moderator: Why to some Panda’s don’t get pregnant and experience this pseudo pregnancy. Think they said this is her sixth false pregnancy.
Can’t wait for an update on Bai. Anymore ultrasound or heat images for a possible upcoming pregnancy????
Moderator’s note: No news yet – we will certainly post when we know!
From the new post on the NZ Panda Cam page, it looks as if they’ve concluded Mei Xiang was just having a pseudopregnancy — no new cub…
sigh…
I hope those of you who are attending the Black & White overnight this weekend have a wonderful time.
Well, there’s good news and bad news from National Zoo.
The good news: Mei Xiang’s birthday is today, Friday, July 22, 2011. She is 13 years old today! Happy Birthday, Mei Xiang!! Also, NZ’s 2 momma pandas gave birth to 2 cubs each in June! Shama at the DC zoo gave birth to 2 cubs on June 17, 2011, and are 5 weeks old now. So far, these 2 cubs are doing well with Shama. Shama gave birth to one cub last year, but that cub died a few days after birth. So, this is Shama’s time to shine as a mom! At National Zoo’s SCBI in Front Royal, Virginia, Mao Lei gave birth to 2 cubs on June 5, and they are now 6 weeks old. They just opened up their eyes this week. Shama and her cubs will be out on exhibit sometime this fall at the DC zoo.
Now, the bad news! Some of you have already read the new update from NZ about Mei Xiang today. Sadly, she experienced a false pregnancy AGAIN for the 6th year in a row, so there is something going on with her that is preventing her from being pregnant. That makes the birth and growth of Tai Shan so much more important now in her life. I just found out myself after reading that update late this afternoon, and I am very sad for Mei after all she has put us thru over the last several weeks with her up and down hormone levels and behaviors, and this news was on her bday. Just looked in on her on the pandacam, and she is still in the den, but looking a little bit more active than she has been in recent weeks. At the end of all of this, Mei Xiang went thru 163 gestation days thru today, 7/22/2011, that resulted in not having a cub. This may be very frustrating for all of us, but I’m sure that this is a huge letdown for the vets and panda keepers at NZ who were hoping sooooo much to see a baby panda for Mei after the past 5 years of seeing nothing. I’m also sure that their Chinese colleagues from Wolong were sad as well as they were hoping for a cub as well. Now, the work begins on the reasons why Mei Xiang is not able to get pregnant and carry a cub full term. That’s a research study project that they will be doing with Mei under their new lease agreement that was signed back in January. Let’s just hope that they will find the answers to this problem, and maybe help Mei be on the right track towards a pregnancy next year in 2012.
Well, now we will have to rely on Bai Yun to keep the streak alive of giving birth to a cub this year that has been going on since 2005. Between Bai at SDZ and Lun Lun at Atlanta, they have given birth to their cubs every year (Bai in odd years, Lun in even years), and I’m sure hoping that Bai Yun will keep it going. Still no word from Memphis Zoo about Ya Ya at all. Will probably send an email or call them to try to get an answer from them about Ya Ya.
I know that everybody (and me!) loves Bai Yun and her ability to get pregnant and have cubs every 2 years, but every momma panda is totally different on how they process their pregnancy and/or false pregnancy. Some momma pandas are very prolific in having baby pandas every 2 years thru either natural mating or artificial insemination, and there are momma pandas that just can’t get pregnant no matter what they do. That’s why there is so much research and studies on the reproductive system of female pandas so that we all can get a better understanding on which momma pandas are successful and which momma pandas are not as successful. Don’t know whether it’s genetics, hereditary reasons, or just plain luck, but those anwers are out there waiting to be unlocked about momma pandas!
To all of you at SDZ for the Black & White Overnite this weekend or next, HAVE FUN!!!

Chari-You had something to say, and you said it…no need to be sorry, from my point of view, and I bet there are many out there agreeing with me…Love AuntieGrammmie
Making a small correction! The 2 momma pandas that gave birth to 2 cubs each in June are red pandas. Meant to put that into my big comment yesterday, but missed that! NZ did show a picture of one of the babies, and he is soooooo cute!! Mao Lei’s 2 cubs are boys, but don’t know the gender of Shama’s 2 cubs yet. Well, back to pandacams! Just saw Yuni on the SDZ pandacam today, and he was sitting on a tree branch and leaning on another branch just above it napping away! Yep, his birthday celebrations are a little over a week away! Can’t believe he’s gonna be 2 years old!! Back later on.

To any attending the Black and White Overnight….be sure to spare enough time to sit and listen to one of Yunior’s charming stories. He can be a real romantic…Love Grammmie
Dear Grammmie,
Thank you kindly. Hee Hee. Mama told me being gentlemanly and treating a lady well is the way to her heart. Hee Hee.
Love,
Yunior
Thanks to all who are wishing us well at the Black and White Overnight. Tomorrow is the family overnight and I hope everyone has a great time; I’m looking forward to the blog on that event.
The adults’ overnight is next weekend, July 30.and I can’t wait to get to SD next Friday for that!
Be sure to tune in to the pandacams at 8:30 am Pacific on Sunday, July 24 and Sunday, July 31 and wave back at the ‘overnighters’.
My thanks to the San Diego Zoo and all involved for giving us these memorable encounters with the pandas and other beautiful creatures!!
Please remind us often….I do not know about others participating in the blog, but my memeory is lucky to last a day—-never make it for a week…Thanks Love AuntieGrammmie
but mei till in her den sleeping all day long. i sitll wish mei gives birth to a cub this yes
Pandanuts, I have checked in on Mei Xiang myself today, and yep, she’s still in her den right now. Sometimes these momma pandas take awhile to get back to their normal selves after going thru over 160 gestation days and a false pregnancy. I’m wondering if she is thinking that she still might be pregnant to still stay in her den? Only she knows that answer! So, just give Mei some time. She’s probably pretty worn out with all of those hormones and feelings going all over the place the last few weeks. It’s like all of us human moms after having our babies, and we all go thru those hormone and feeling changes after birth for awhile. Anyway, keep watching all of the pandacams and enjoy our black & white buddies!

Well, gotta make a couple of more corrections again. I reread the NZ update again and got the letters of the momma red panda’s name at Front Royal backwards, so this is her actual name: Lao Mei. Got the L and M in the wrong spots. Plus, I misread her 2 cubs’ gender and said that they were boys, but Lao Mei’s cubs are GIRLS! Sorry for all of the missprints, you all! Still don’t know Shama’s 2 cubs’ genders yet. The NZ keepers are keeping their distance until Shama is alot more comfy with her cubs and bonding with them. Just checked in on Mei Xiang on the NZ pandacam at around 2pm EDT today, and she is still in her den napping either on the floor full of boo nest or on the platform. She’s alot slower to come out of her false pregnancy mode this time around unless she might pull another surprise on us again. Only Mei knows! Also, just watched Yuni walking around in his yard on the SDZ pandacam. Boy, has he done some growing! It’s almost like yesterday that he was just a small boy hanging around his mom, Bai! What’s Yuni’s weight as of the last week of July? He’s got to be close to 100 pounds by now!
Well, gonna go and get some things done, but will be back later on.

‘Lady Precious Jade, would you like to take a walk around the palace gardens with me? My Mama tells me fresh air will help me recover better’ asked Prince Yunnie appealingly as he trained his eyes on a pair of lustrous ones.
Lady Precious Jade blushed and giggled. ‘Please call me Jade. And I would like to take a walk along the Begonia Lane, I hear the flowers are in full bloom.’
Prince Yunnie led the way and the pair strolled slowly enjoying the landscaped gardens and they met Queen Bai, who had quietly slipped into the garden via another secret path to appear casually in front of the couple.
‘Prince Yunnie and Jade dropped to their knees as is the Chinese custom. ‘Good day, Empress Bai, may the Panda God grant you good health and a long life,’ declared Jade. Yunnie smiled at his Mama and said, ‘Fancy meeting you, my dear Mama. May the Panda God bless you with good health and great wisdom.’ He suspected her presence was not coincidence.
‘Lady Precious Jade, please rise. Do follow me and have some tea with me in my pavillion. And my dear son, go and practise your calligraphy. I think you have been neglecting your studies. Calligraphy will strengthen your paw. Come take my paw, Lady Precious Jade, let me show you my garden.’
With that Empress Bai swept Lady Precious Jade away. Prince Yunnie dutifully trotted off and was writing couplets using his calligraphy brush.
‘A pair of lustrous eyes I see
Framed in beautifully shaped black eye patches
The beating heart in me
Is learning to sing joyfully
of a fine young lady
who my heart catches’
‘Hmmm, I can do better…’ thought Prince Yunnie. Yes, our young prince has finally had his first crush!
‘I will crush you like this bamboo if you and your hooman army do not leave us alone!’ and with that Emperor Gao bangs his paw onto the bamboo table, breaking it in 2.
The Hooman King looked stunned as he expected the Panda Emperor to be frightened and cowering.
Then Emperor Gao did his famopus one pawed handstand and scentmarked a spot high above the Hooman King’s head.
‘Can you top that?’ Emperor Gao asked menancingly.
There was a heavy silence in the negotiating room.
‘Thought not. Now leave and never return for at least a 100 years.’ And with that Emperor Gao turned and stormed out with Lord Le Le.
The next day, the Hooman King left with his army and was not seen again for another 100 years. Meanwhile Emperor Gao took steps to hide his kingdom from the prying eyes of outsiders.
On the evening of the next day, Prince Yunnie was having dinner with his Mama and Papa and Princess ZZ.
Princess ZZ could not resist and asked, ‘So Mama when is the wedding day?’
‘Eh? What wedding?’ asked an amused Emperor Gao, ‘ which male panda has even dared to approach us with a proposal, hmmm?’
‘NOT me, Yunnie!’
‘Jie, NO!’ yelled Yunnie as he fled the table as his family burst into laughter.
[To be continued, maybe.]
Yun Zi, you are a darling. Not all Pandas are quite as talented as you. When you can make yourself seem silly in your own story, it is a sign that you will grow up with not only a sense of fun, but to be able to laugh twice as much. Lots of Pandas cannot laugh at themselves. I am very proud of you….Love AuntieGrammmie
This must be continued, Yunnie Dear, us nice “Hoomans” would cry our eyes out without a happy ending. You were so upset when you ran out—-we need more. Love AuntieGrammmie
I meant to tell you in the other note that many “Hoomans” cannot laugh at themselves either. Pandas look so happy most of the time—we would be upset to know you weren’t.
Dear Auntie Grammmie,
Thank you for your kind words. This is just a story. Prince Yunnie is not me, hee hee. I am just creating a story set in the ancient China where Pandas once ruled a small kingdom. Any resemblance to any living panda or animal is purely coincidence. Hee hee hee. But Lady Precious Jade could be based on a very beautiful lady panda that I know of. Also Emperor Gao could be like my Papa and Emperess Bai could be like my Mama. Hee Hee. Auntie Lucilla is helping me write these stories as I tell her my ideas.
She says with the Black and White Overnight coming, I better plan what I want to say to the hoomans and their cubbies who are coming.
What do you think I should do, Aunties?
Peace and Love,
Yun Zi
Yunnie, all you need to do is be your friendly, lovable self. Smile and wave at the visitors and maybe demonstrate some of your daredevil climbing skills.
MSN NEWS is reporting that Su Lin’s cub was taken from her because she was not an experienced mother and that the cub was very weak and could have died…BUT, they did report that they exchanged another older cub that was healthy in hopes she would not notice.
To the staff, has this ever been done before at the zoo if yes or no, what are the odds of Su Lin noticing that it is not her cub and abandoning it and what happened then?
The actual article and video of Su Lin is posted on MSN and states the following: “July 16: Caretakers at a panda center in China have taken a weak cub from a mother panda and replaced it with a healthy cub, hoping she doesn’t notice, in order to save its life. Msnbc.com”
Moderator’s note: Our Panda Team will provide an update about Su Lin when we receive news from our Chinese colleagues.
I promised this link to somebody yesterday, along with the link for Tai Shans birth, so as to understand the need. If anybody out there knows what I am talking about please pass it along. Thank You…Love AuntieGrammmie

I am taking a chance-treating you to a link to a YOU TUBE account, but here I was, alone at 11:00 Yunior time, Saturday night—really shutting down the computer when I clicked on something I had not used for some time, and arrived at the PandaFandomWorldWide site on facebook. I don’t spend much time on facebook but it recently started bringing old friends back, but this link is for PANDAHOLICS really. The Videos are from recently at the San Diego Zoo, and I promise you will enjoy them…Love Grammmie

You may have to copy and paste it, but worth the time.
Lady Precious Jade was searching through her toy box and found some enrichment toys that she loved. She gathered them up and placed them into a basket together with some buns and dumplings she had made. She was singing and smiling to herself.
Her BFF Lady Winter Forest or Lin Ping was helping her. ‘He is special I see,’ giggled Lin Ping. ‘He is cute and loveable and so brave,’ grins Jade, ‘Anyway we are so young. He is almost 2 and I am 2. We’ll see where this friendship goes.’
Lady Lin Ping looked at her friend and then she said in a falsetto, ‘Announcing the wedding of His Royal Highness Prince Yunnie, Defender of the Kingdom, Commander in Chief of our Emperor’s armies to Lady Precious Jade, daughter of our Supreme Judge Lord Yang Yang and Lady Lunnie.’
‘Stop it! He is just a new friend….it is too soon.’ SHe turned away quickly so her friend could not see her blush.
‘So is Nursie going to see her patient? His poor paw needs lots of tender living care, you know.’
‘Ah Ping! I am just going to cheer him up. He was fighting off those kidnappers just outside my back door. I have to make sure he is OK.’
‘Yes, of course, you must even though he has a palace full of physicians to look after him, he needs his own nurse who knows next to nothing about medicine.’
‘I do so know about medicine. If you have a cough, you wrap your throat with a scarf and if you fall and get a scratch, you wash it and put on a medicinal plaster.’
‘All hail the Senior Nurse in the Land!’
‘Excuse me, I have a patient waiting for me, coming?’
‘Is his cute friend Xi Lan going to be there? Wait, I am coming too!!!’
Soon the carriage came round to the front door and the two young ladies climbed in with their chaperones and left for the Palace, giggling all the way.
[To be continued, maybe.]
Darliing Yun Zi; you are amazing. I see Princess Lin Ping is a Lady now–just how tall is she anyway? Has she met your Auntie Hao Hao yet. If I am not mistaken they are just about a month older than you–aren’t they? And just between you, me and the fencepost—–Are you expecting a baby brother or sister soon??? Which shall it be-a Prince or Princess??? You can tell me….I can keep a secret. Love AuntieGrammmie
Dear Grammmie,
Hao Hao is my Mama’s grandchild and that make her my niece, hee hee. I like being an uncle. She is playing percussion for the Panda Grrrls who may re-group now that jie jie Su has had her baby. Mama wont tell me either whether I am getting my biggest birthday wish. SIGH. But I think it will be another brother. Maybe 2.
Love,
Yunior
I do want to see a panda blush some day. Of course, you’d need a color photo to capture the moment.
Me and my 2 girls are coming for sure to celebrate his b-day ..I can’t wait!!
Although I am unable to attend,I will sure watch all the festivities for Yuni’s
birthday week – definitely a happy period. Watching the National Zoo’s
panda cam about 5:15 CDT, it is truly heartbreaking to see Mei, in her den,
hugging and resting the side of her face against the plastic ball. Hope Bai
has better luck.
Was on the SDZ pandacam at around 7pm EDT, and there was Yuni on that big fat log that’s sitting on that big huge stump in his yard. He’s flopped over that big log just snoozing away facing the cam! Just love that big kid!!

Checked in on Pandas Live On website tonite for any new articles about the pandas that we know so well, and there are a few good ones on the front page. Front page articles, pictures, and videos are about Mei Xiang, Fu Hu, Su Lin, and the red pandas. All of them are very recent within the last couple of days. Go check the website!
Yuni is back on that big stump and big log again–napping! Just checked in on the SDZ pandacam tonite. Also checked in on the NZ pandacam, and Mei Xiang was sitting on the platform in her den eating some boo. Good to see her eat something after not eating very much over the last 2-3 weeks.
Gonna go for now. Will be back later on.

Dear Lovely Moderator; I had your directions for calling up blogs from 2009 forward to now, on another screen so I would not make mistakes, but I am no computer genius, and found my biggest problem was trying to find out What to type and Where to type it. I tried dates, I figured to go forward and backward 2 weeks from the date I was pretty sure I wanted, but Panda Blog, then the date after it, in the search box only got me error notices. Was the computer really too busy on a Sunday night that it could only give me error notices??? I think What I am asking is the problem, I certainly know where the search box is on the blog page. I finally started clicking on the cute little photos below the top portion of the blog, and found some interesting ones (don’t worry I saved the links from them), but often ran out of Pandas to click on…then tried any of the boxes, and found more Panda stuff, but never the exact blog I was looking for. HELP! There is no need to publish this—just more specific directions, since the first ones were beyond my knowlege. I apprecciate any help you can be. If you want to post the directions rather than e-mail me directly—that is great too, but I do not want you to feel like this whole mess-ME-needs to be shared with the rest of the innocent readers….Thanks…Love Grammmie
Moderator’s note: Currently, the only way I’ve found to search for posts written in 2009 and 2010 is to either type in a name or a topic (for example, “Bai Yun” or “panda pregnancy”) to get a list of the posts that mention her, or select a category (such as Giant Pandas) and then scroll through all of the posts in that category until you come across what you’re looking for. It really doesn’t take as long as it sounds
Thank you so very much—I will keep the directions and give it a try. Maybe if I hit it just right I will get a Panda of my own—that is okay since I sleep a lot, and keep their hours…..Love Grammmie
My RSVP will have to be virtual. Looking forward to the big day on the PandaCam. Hard to believe what that big boy looked like almost 2 years ago.
Li Li, a 19 year old panda gave birth to Chengdu’s first cub this year on Sunday afternoon. The female cub was born on July 24 at 14:51 (2:52 PM ); the cub was weighing 161 grams (5.7 oz) at birth. The father of the cub is Shu Hin (Japanese name: Qiu Bang), the cub is the result of an artificial insemination. Both mother and daughter are doing well.

Happy 2nd Birthday, handsome bear. I would love to give you a big kiss, but you would probably try to eat my face:) Wow, how the time goes by so fast. You can slow down though, cause soon enough, you will be going to China, and we won’t get to see you. I hope you get lots of yum yums, and wish I could be there to help you celebrate. I love you very much.
Happy Birthday to this handsome bear. I plan on coming to the San Diego Zoo on Friday, August 5, to see this cutie celebrate his 2nd birthday.
I probably won’t be able to see Yunnie’s b’day
as I will be working at that time. Perhaps they’ll be a taping of it so I can view it later…. Please, please!!!! I cannot believe he is going to be 2! I remember watching him with Momma when I would come home from work at night. Such a night owl he was!!!
Moderator’s note: Of course our videographer and photographer will be there
