Spending my summer at Six Flags!

Hi guys! I’m Lucy and I’m currently a high school senior.

I’ll admit that I was never too interested in the Zoo when I was younger. After all for me, the word “zoo” brought up childhood memories of being prodded up and down miles of hilly terrain in order to catch a glimpse of the tigers, or waiting underneath the hot sun for yet another sea lion show to start; I never really got the point. Conservation? The rainforest? Sure, I knew they were important, but at the same time, I didn’t really tie it to my own life.

In 8th grade though, I joined Zoo Corps, an organization dedicated to spreading conservational awareness at the San Diego Zoo. I was pretty hesitant about the program at first (what, with my many wonderful childhood memories) because I was sure I’d hate it, but Zoo Corps soon proved me wrong. Suddenly, I learned about behavioral enrichment at the Zoo, about animal diets, and the importance of conservation. And suddenly, I found myself caring about things I had never even bothered to consider before.

Fast forward to the present: I’m currently a Trainer at Zoo Corps and a big advocate of conservation. I’m always applying things I’ve learned from Zoo Corps to my life. But what often surprises me is how little people know about the Zoo, its functions, and the many people and programs that help it achieve its goals. As a member of the Real World Team at Zoo InternQuest, I hope to learn more about the different aspects of the Zoo and tie it to your world. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself wanting to learn more, too!
